The Running Event 2024
A note from Christina Henderson, Event Director, #TRE24
This year will be my 10th year at The Running Event and, in many ways, I can’t believe it has been that long. In others, it feels right. When I first applied to work for The Running Event, it was because I enjoyed running and had just moved from Austin to New York City. I had a bit of experience working in events and thought it might be fun for a while. Now, a decade later, our team is preparing to host the 18th edition of TRE, where I’ll celebrate my 10th anniversary.
I never could have imagined what I’d learn and how I’d grow and how the people I’d meet would become lifelong friends. As we look forward to The Running Event 2024, I wanted to share a few things I’ve learned and observed.
• Powerful and beautiful things happen when people come together. Modern technology is amazing, but nothing will replace face-to-face gatherings.
• Be a mentor and a mentee. No matter where you are in your career, it’s important to be both.
• Support the new faces. We were all that person once. I’ll never forget those who welcomed me and were patient with me during my first few years — they are the first people I look for when I arrive in Austin for The Running Event each year.
Meet the Team
• Be intentional about being inclusive. Go out of your way to create a welcoming space for everyone.
• Trade shows shape and drive the culture of an industry. Let’s work together to drive positivity in run specialty.
• Ask questions. No matter how far you’ve come in your career, there’s always more to learn.
• Walk every aisle of the trade show floor. The smaller brands or brands you do not carry support and believe in specialty retail — and you just might discover the next big thing.
• Attend as many TRE gatherings as you can. That person you’ve been emailing for a year might be sitting next to you.
• Leave Austin better than we found it. The city has been a home for the running industry, so let’s show our gratitude.
Our team has been working hard to build the most valuable and enjoyable week ever in Austin for TRE 2024. You’ll find many of your favorite events – along with new activations and initiatives we’re excited to introduce – in the pages of this Event Guide. Cheers! I can’t wait to see you all in Austin.
With gratitude, Christina
What to Expect
Education can take place just about anywhere, any time, and in hundreds of different formats. At TRE, the learning opportunities are endless. Attendees access classroomstyle educational sessions during the conference portion of the event, which each offer important insights into retail best practices, industry trends, and much more. Theater sessions taking place in the exhibit hall will feature panels of experts and industry leaders sharing their stories and perspectives. Beyond these sessions, though, are the conversations with other retailers, brands, race directors, media members, and partner organizations that will spark ideas and open the door to new learnings. Education is key to individual growth, business growth, and industry growth – and you can expect countless opportunities to learn at TRE 2024.
From getting excited about a new idea you heard during an educational session to celebrating the 2024 Best Running Stores, inspiration is always a word we hear when people talk about TRE. When so many industry members come together under the same roof, it’s hard not to get inspired by the collective energy and passion so prevalent in the running and outdoor community. You’ll have opportunities to connect with TRE’s incredible partner organizations, sit in on a thought-provoking keynote presentation, celebrate peers at the Industry Awards Dinner, and hear what stores and brands from around the world are up to – inspiring ideas, connections, and positive industry change.
We’re inviting the run and outdoor specialty communities to experience everything that makes TRE so special–the connections, the education, and all the opportunities that are created when an industry comes together. We can’t wait for our communities to experience this year’s event.
Christina Henderson Event Director, TRE
TRE is all about connection: connecting with industry peers, running into new and old friends, building first-time business relationships, and reinforcing longstanding partnerships. While we all appreciate the advantages that come with a digital world, the TRE team strongly believes nothing can replace in-person connection. TRE is a business-to-business, industry-focused event, yes – but it’s also a hub for our industry to come together and celebrate. At this year’s event, you’ll find on-and off-site networking events like the Indie 5K, Trail Cleanup, Partner Hour, show floor happy hours, Future Leaders of Specialty Retail meetup, and many more, all of which will provide space for meaningful, much needed connection.
The 2024 exhibit hall won’t be one to miss. Already the largest show floor in event history, attendees will discover the latest products and trends from leading run and outdoor brands like adidas, ASICS, Brooks, HOKA, KEEN Footwear, Nike, New Balance, On, and Saucony. You’ll also find brands who are exhibiting at TRE for the first time, like lululemon, Patagonia, Bandit Running, Satisfy, Teva, and many more. Also keep your eye out for emerging brands that may not be on your radar yet, like True Motion and Melin. And don’t miss Year Three of Switchback at TRE – our outdoor-focused expansion of the exhibit hall. While it’s easy to get swept up in the bustle of TRE’s show floor, remember to take your time exploring and visit as many booths as you can. You never know what you might discover!

Johnny Cupcakes
A Creative Recharge in Building Customer Loyalty & Memorable Retail Experiences
Keynote speaker Johnny Cupcakes shares his unpredictable story about creating The World’s First T-shirt Bakery – a food-themed T-shirt brand with a clothing store on Boston’s Newbury Street that looks like a bakery, smells like a bakery; where T-shirts are displayed in refrigerators, packaged in lunch boxes, and pulled out of a secret smoking oven!
Although Johnny does trick hangry people daily with his fakery, 100% of his customers leave with an experience and a story to share. TRE attendees will have the opportunity to hear specific, proven ideas, strategies, and insights from Johnny – many of which can be implemented into stores quickly and with minimal cost. Grab your notebook and buckle up for a fast-paced journey into the unknown. You don’t want to miss this!
Main keynote takeaways will include:
• Building Brand Loyalty: Hear new ideas about turning existing and new customers into brand ambassadors who will promote your store and do the advertising for you. A few small adjustments can go a long way!
• Inspiring Innovation: Discover ways to spark innovation within your team, products, packaging, events, and marketing so that you stand out. Customers have too many options: Why will they choose you?
• Creating Unique Experiences in Retail: Walk away with a list of unique strategies to implement across the board – all of which will build value and grow your presence.
Keynote Stage presented by:
Johnny Earle, also known as Johnny Cupcakes, started 16 businesses before he was 16 years old. Johnny eventually baked up the idea for his bakery-themed T-shirt brand and opened The World’s First T-shirt Bakery, Johnny Cupcakes: a frosting scented clothing store with T-shirts displayed in refrigerators, clothing packaged in pastry boxes, and orders delivered through a secret smoking oven!
Named Top Innovator in Retail by The Boston Globe, Johnny’s award-winning store and marketing strategies have been featured in FORBES, INC, WIRED, NPR, The Steve Harvey Show, and as a case study in several branding and business books. With thousands of customers with his brand’s logo as tattoos, Johnny shares his tips, tricks, and secret ingredients on business, marketing, and customer loyalty.
The audience will walk away with pages of inspiration that they can implement immediately - many at little to no cost...It’s not about B2C, it’s about H2H, Human to Human. Injecting the right amount of love, thought, and creativity into all aspects of our businesses can provide longevity and F-U-N into our retail stores.

5 Tips for Engaging Your Trail-Running Community
By Marcus Woolf
Over the past decade, Nashville’s population has grown by a whopping 21 percent, and an influx of young, active adults has boosted the local trail-running community. “We have a really good trail-running scene here,” says Jason Thienel, owner of Cumberland Transit, a Nashville outdoor specialty store that’s embraced runners. During a stop in Nashville for the Switchback Roadshow, we asked Thienel and a few run specialty retailers to share tips on how dealers can effectively engage their local trail-running community.
1. Host Group Runs Regularly
For Cumberland Transit, group runs play a key role in building relationships with local trail runners, says Thienel, adding that hosting them regularly is essential. Every Monday night, the store’s trail-running group—the Crazy Owls—gathers at Percy Warner Park. “It’s important to be consistent to build a following,” says Thienel, noting that when he launched the running group, he had no idea how many people would attend. “Now it’s become people’s regular Monday workout, and when the weather’s nice, we might get 20 to 30 people.”
2. Appoint Leaders for Trail-Running Outreach
Designate a leader to oversee group gatherings, says Lee Wilson, owner of Nashville Running Company. “Trail running can be intimidating,” he says, explaining that a group leader with social skills—whether it’s a shop employee or local enthusiast—can make newcomers feel welcome and comfortable. A leader with knowledge of local trails can also steer beginner runners toward appropriate paths and pace groups to suit their abilities. With your store staff, appoint someone to communicate with local runners regularly through social media and email.
3. Emphasize Leave No Trace Principles
“It’s really important to foster a group that employs trail ethics,” says Thienel, explaining that a group leader should teach proper trail etiquette and Leave No Trace principles. “I want our group to benefit the park,” he says, noting that good behavior reduces impact on trails. Also, when runners practice proper etiquette, other user groups and park officials view trail runners favorably.
Marcus Woolf Editor, Trailheads
Marcus has been a reporter, writer, and editor for outdoor business and consumer media for nearly 30 years. He served as the editor of Outdoor Retailer Magazine and worked as a contributing editor for the Outdoor Retailer Daily Exposure newspaper, SNEWS, and Gear Trends Magazine. His writing has also appeared in consumer publications such as Outside and Backpacker. Marcus is an avid hiker and the author of the guidebooks Afoot & Afield: Atlanta and Hiking Huntsville, which covers trails in his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. When he isn’t mapping trails or traveling to visit outdoor retailers, Marcus enjoys backpacking, canoeing, and kayaking with his wife, Wendy.
4. Develop Partnerships
Bell’s Reserve, a private recreation area near Nashville, contacted Cumberland Transit for ideas on promoting the Preserve. Cumberland Transit and Nashville Running Company partnered with HOKA to host a fun run and product demo at the site. While the Preserve got publicity, the retailers received kudos for introducing people to new trails. Plus, HOKA benefitted by promoting its new Speedgoat 6 shoe. Thanks to partnerships, it was a win for everyone involved.
5. Keep it Social
Thienel and Wilson agree that camaraderie is more important than competition during a trail-running gathering. “It’s a very social run for us,” says Thienel. “No one’s trying to get their PR.” After a run, groups head to a brewery or sports bar, says Wilson, noting, “Trail runners are typically a burgers and beer chill crowd that likes to hang out.”

Analyzing Shoe Data from Major American Races
Nearly nine million people completed a road race in the United States last year. What shoes were they wearing on their feet? In a first-of-its-kind partnership, Running USA is teaming up with MarathonFoto to explore the shoe preferences of runners across the country. Using AI, we will explore the most popular brands overall and break down trends across distances from 5K to marathon, by gender and by age. We will also look at how brand popularity varies by region. This data will allow brands to understand their strengths and how they measure up against competitors while also providing new numbers for run specialty retailers to use in their forecasting.
Bridging the Gap: Run Crews + Community Connection
ASICS will bring together leaders from urban Run Crews to discuss a run club movement unlike any other. This will be a panel conversation with Run Club leaders across the country who are Bridging The Gap and leading within their own communities to build, connect and celebrate the evolution of run culture.

LIVE TRE
Hosted by:
Tommie Runz Founder and Host, PR Project
Back for Year Two, we’re streaming TRE straight from show floor. We’ll be giving consumers at home a peek into what TRE is all about, featuring interviews with top brands, industry organizations, retailers, and even TRE staff.
TRE LIVE will be hosted by PR Project - a media team focused on amplifying the voices of Black, Indigenous, and all People of Color in the running space. New this year, FloTrack will be streaming TRE LIVE on platforms including their YouTube and Facebook - all at no cost to viewers.
In a reimagined studio space located right on the show floor, hosts Tommie Runz, Gary Koutsoubos, and Aaron Barnett will interview guests throughout exhibit hall hours on Wednesday and Thursday. In addition to finding TRE LIVE on Flo Track’s platforms, interested viewers will be able to catch the stream via TRE’s website.
Here’s a preview of TRE LIVE guests:
This matters so much, not only because it’s giving more eyes to the running industry and the brands having more exposure—basically all of the on-paper reasons. But for it to be happening with us—a Black dude and a Mexican guy from the Detroit area—basically as the face of this big event on a livestream for eight hours. It’s huge.”

Pickleball Village
We’re bringing pickleball back to TRE for the second year! Located in the 2500 and 2600 aisles of the exhibit hall, attendees will discover a Pickleroll Pickleball court as well as leading pickleball brands. As the sport remains extremely popular, pickleball presents a big opportunity to run and outdoor specialty retailers.
Stop by the space for product demonstrations, giveaways, special guest appearances, and more.
In 2023, the Association of Pickleball Professionals (APP) shared that 48.3 million adult Americans played pickleball at least once in the prior 12 months – almost 19% of the adult US population.
Join the #TRE24 Social Media Challenge!
New this year, TRE swag will be available to purchase at the 2024 event! Sound Running is producing a variety of quality, custom products for #TRE24 - and we can’t wait for you to see them.
Even better, all proceeds from TRE swag will be donated to local Austin organizations.
In partnership with Tommie Runz and Kofuzi, we’re challenging attendees to create the best #TRE24 Instagram reel!
The Assignment: Create a reel that embodies your experience at #TRE24.
The Guidelines: Participants must attend the conference session, “Maximize Social Media”, taking place Tuesday, November 19. Presented by Tommie Runz and Kofuzi, the session will get you inspired to create content! The TRE team will review all submitted reels and select a winner within one month post-event. Explore this guide to start planning what you might capture at #TRE24 - and stay tuned for more contest details and guidelines, coming soon.
The Prize: The creator of the winning reel will receive a free pass to The Running Event 2025.
Sustainability + Environmental Initiatives
The Running Event continues to evaluate its environmental impact. With ongoing guidance from the Low Impact Alliance - TRE’s Environmental Impact Partner - as well as other partners and resources, we’re taking active steps to reduce waste and increase awareness around environmental impact.
Here are some ways we’re making that happen:
The Trail Cleanup will remove waste from local Austin trails while giving back to the community.
By not carpeting the exhibit hall, TRE avoids the emission of 71 metric tons of carbonequivalent to growing 1,184 trees in a year!
Find compostable utensils in the food court as well as more plant-based menu options. Unused (and safe) food products will be donated to local organizations.
Nathan will provide reusable water bottles as well as water stations.
A limited quantity of finisher medals will be available at the Indie 5k; medals will be made of wood instead of plastic or metal.
For the first time, TRE will not allow paper materials in the attendee bag.
Gear Up & Give Back
As always, the TRE team would like to challenge our exhibitors and attendees to join us in being more sustainable and thoughtful about waste and unnecessary printing at this year’s event.
TRE is collaborating with Recover to create TRE-themed apparel for 2024 –with a goal to benefit local Austin organizations.
Items will be available through a Recover-hosted, zero-waste online store where items will be printed on-demand. This process allows us to completely avoid excess and unused inventory and reduce the environmental impact of this initiative. 20% of sales will be donated to an Austin organization.
The online store will open prior to TRE; orders can also be placed during the event, and samples will be available in Recover’s booth (#525) so that anyone interested can try before they buy.
Stay tuned for more information on this meaningful and sustainable collaboration.
