Happy New Year to Everyone! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. The start of a New Year brings with it the cliché of the New Year’s Resolutions of getting into shape, learning something new or self improvement. The focus of this month’s Den is to discuss getting the entire family “moving” in the right direction here in Brevard County.

I read an article on www.healthiergeneration.org over the holidays that indicated Florida has the 39th highest childhood obesity rate in the United States. I am not sure what this rate is here in Brevard County, but the trend of obesity is increasing everywhere. The article also indicated that 27.5% of youth in Florida are overweight or obese and obese children are more likely to become obese adults. And if you’re overweight as a child, your obesity in adulthood is likely to be more severe. So the changes we make now can help our children live longer and healthier lives.

The article goes on to indicate the amount of time we as parents spend physically active can influence the amount of time our children are physically active. The recommendation is for adults to exercise at least 30 minutes every day and youth need at least 60 minutes. The good news is there are lots of opportunities to

The recommendation is for adults to exercise at least 30 minutes every day and youth need at least 60 minutes. get involved in exercise in Brevard County. We have many free group runs/walks in many different areas of the county, lots of local organized running and walking events and lots of parks throughout the county. This is also a great bonding opportunity and connection with your children that could last a lifetime. The joy of exercising together as a family is incredible. It is easy to get started but as parents, you probably will need to take the first step. Sorry to be so serious but we feel pretty strongly about trying to reverse this trend in Brevard County! I hope you and your family will start (or continue) moving together for a healthier future. Best Wishes for a Great New Year,

Record field turns out for Jingle Bells 2-Miler By Mark DeCotis

Indialantic’s Andrew Cacciatore had yet to take the winter running break mandated by Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy cross country and track coach Doug Butler so the Tigers junior figured he might as well enter the Jingle Bells 2-Miler on Dec. 21. Well, Cacciatore, 17, the 2013 Florida High School Activities Association Class 1A state cross country championship runner-up didn’t just run the 2-Miler, he won it, beating former Holy Trinity teammate Cole Oliver by 10 seconds – 9:50.2 to 10 minutes flat. Melbourne’s Peter Clusener, 36, was third in 10:03.5, breaking up what would have been a Holy Trinity sweep of the top spots at the Satellite Beach Public Library. Holy Trinity runner Trevor Kattenberg, 14, of Satellite Beach was fourth in 10:07.1 and Butler’s son and former Holy Trinity runner Kyle Butler, 25, was fifth in 10:17.1. Speaking of sweeps, Satellite Beach native, Melbourne resident and pro triathlete Kaitlin Donner remained undefeated in Running Zone Race Series events this season, winning the women’s title in 10:31. Donner was 10th overall in winning her fourth series race. She also won the 2013 Space Coast Half-Marathon women’s overall championship for the second straight year. “Running Zone always puts on a great race and brings out the competition,” said Donner who grew up in Satellite Beach as Kaitlin Shiver. “I really just used this race to see where my base speed is. I’ve done no speed work, just base miles, 55 to 60 miles a week to get ready for the tri season and seems to be a theme that I respond really well to the base mileage.” Donner certainly got her miles in on race day, running in the morning, riding with husband and triathlete Ed Donner and then running the mile and a half or so from her family’s home to the library to do the race. For Cacciatore the race capped a fall season that saw Holy Trinity’s boys and girls win Class 1A state team titles, the first double for the Tigers since 2006. The championships were the 12th and 13th for Butler, the winningest cross country coach in Florida history. He will run the 2-mile in the track season and then prepare himself for another run at a cross country individual and team title next fall. “Coach Butler has built up the program so much that it sets a standard for what everybody else has to run,” said Cacciatore. Shane Streufert, 41, of Viera, won the Jingle Bells Male Master’s title in 10:36.4 while Melbourne’s Julie Hannah, 40, of Melbourne

New Year Resolutions Aiming for New Heights By Mark DeCotis

n Jayne Preisinger Goehmann: To stop signing up for so many races. Luckily, I never stick to my resolutions. n Marla Hall: Try to not get injured and get faster on the full marathons. n Cathynia Spence-Hernandez: It's my only resolution, run longer and run faster. n Andrea LaBonte: My first full marathon and a sub two-hour half by the end of the year. n Jack Lightle: My resolution is to continue showing up at the Starting Line for the Running Zone and/or Space Coast Runners series, but it is not getting any easier.

The New Year presents new challenges for Space Coast runners and here are some New Year’s resolutions aimed at scaling new heights.

best running years behind me, it gives me great pleasure helping others achieve things they didn't think possible.

n Andrew Adams: Try not to get run over, and log 750+ miles this year. And finish the 2014 Dopey upright and under my own power.

n Peter Clusener: Staying healthy. Keeping running routine fun and fresh. Running in beautiful places and new places. Enjoying myself.

n Sebastian Aravena: Run faster.

n Sarah Anne Deibner: Break 19 minutes in a 5K and run a 600-mile summer. n David Drury: Train for an ultra.

n Barry Birdwell: Completely integrate a nutrition plan into my Big Sur Marathon training (vegan). Convert a non-runner into a runner. Gain skills in online-virtual coaching. (Wife) Michele and I are headed to Edinburgh, Scotland in June taking runners from all over the USA with us. n Michele Birdwell: Get my brother Guy to run a half-marathon with me in memory of mom. n Kylie Burket: Run my first full marathon. n Doug Butler: For 2014 I would like to be healthy and run everyday possible. Life gets busy and stressful and running is the one thing in life you are in complete control of. I would also like to help as many people as possible in 2014 reach their running goals. With all my

n Rene Dunne: I plan to keep my miles up and train for my next full marathon, which is Savannah Rock n Roll. n Cathy Friedel: My running resolution is to improve my strength, flexibility and core to stay injury free and run well in the Gate River Run (15K), and my two Half-Ironman races (Florida 70.3 in April and Worlds 70.3 in Mont Tremblant in September). And, hopefully, keep up with my daughter, Sydney, on the shorter races. n Suzy Fleming Leonard: My New Year’s resolution for running is to try and get faster. It’s fun to chug along at a 12-minute pace and chat with my friends, but I’m ready to see if I have it in me to increase my speed.

The EnergyNR facilitates a seamless transition from more conventional running shoe brands into the Newton line. n Aimee Long: First full marathon since I did my first half this past February. n Greg Mills: Three full marathons and 1,400 miles. n Brant Patrick Parsons: 1,000 miles and 365 days of running. n Samantha Chaitt Peterson: My first halfmarathon this coming March. n Susan Daniels Petracco: Glass Slipper Challenge, then Excalibur two weeks later. n Shona Price: I want to run my first full marathon. I signed up for one in October. n Candi Pulsifer: Two full marathons, three half-marathons . n Marty Winkel: This year was the first year since 1986 that I did not run at least one marathon during the year. My New Year’s resolution is to run at least one marathon in 2014 and hopefully run three. n Gail Bardin Wiseman: Just to keep being consistent like I was in 2013.

Shona Price: Why I Run By Mark DeCotis

Shona Price, 36, has been running for six years. The Suntree resident, wife and mother, is an editor at FLORIDA TODAY. Price, who recently completed the Space Coast Half-Marathon in 2:07:04, is a graduate of Titusville High and the University of Central Florida. Why do I run: Although I find it challeng-

ing, it’s such a great feeling when I finish a long or tough run. And although I’m not that fast, I can still run faster than other people my age, and that feels pretty good, too.

Where do I run and why: I usually run around my Suntree neighborhood, because of the convenience. If I have more time, I like to run on Tropical Trail from Oars and Paddles Park in Indian Harbour Beach, because it’s shady and pretty.

When do I run and why: I like to run early in the morning because if I wait until after work, it won’t happen. And I have more energy in the morning, too.

Shona Price (4247) legs out Suntree Turkey Trot.

With whom do I run: By myself. Although,

my daughter (10 years old) is starting to get in to running, so I’m hoping she will be my new running buddy soon.

Worst running experience you learned the most from: I haven’t had anything re-

ally terrible happen to me. Yet.

Thank You for Volunteering for the Space Coast Marathon & Half Marathon 2013 and thank you for making it a success! It is difficult to express how thankful we are for all of the volunteers that helped with the 42nd Anniversary of the Space Coast Marathon and Half Marathon. We had approximately 450 volunteers involved in the weekend's events. Course marshals, aid stations, finish line area, food & refreshments, start corrals, cleanup and many other areas

all needed volunteers and we had a great response this year to fill all of these positions. Participants of the race emailed and posted great reviews and these are directly a result of your efforts. Please visit the Space Coast Marathon facebook page for some of the awesome reviews. Again, thank you so much for volunteering and making the

Space Coast Marathon & Half Marathon an event that participants want to come back year after year. If you have not returned your uniforms, please do so to Running Zone at your convenience. We did the drawing for the free pair of shoes from Running Zone and the winner is Erin Carrigan! Congratulations!

Blast Off 2014 - Sunday, Nov. 30th! Please mark your calendars for next year's Space Coast Marathon and Half Marathon if you would like to volunteer.

The Dreaded Side Stitch

By Richard C. Wilson, DPM, Melbourne Podiatry Associates Tim was 2 miles into his daily run and was feeling good. He decided to quicken his pace, and he felt great for the next quarter mile. Suddenly, an intense sharp pain began on his right side, severe enough to stop him in his tracts. Side stitch struck again! Side stitches are among the most painful conditions that can affect a runner. It is a severe, sudden pain that occurs beneath the ribcage, usually on the right side. The condition only occurs during exercise and resolves spontaneously. It is also referred to as side ache, side cramp, side crampie, stitch, side stitch, and by its official medical name, exercise-related transient abdominal pain (ETAP). Although originally reported in runners, the condition is most frequent in swimmers. An epidemiological study found that 75% of swimmers suffer ETAP, compared to 69% of runners, 62% of equestrians, 52% of aerobics participants, 47% of basketball players, and 32% of cyclists. Many theories of the cause of ETAP have been proposed, but the true cause remains unknown. Originally, it was thought that the

by drinking water before and during running is helpful. Strengthening of the core muscles (abdominals, lower back, and obliques) is important. “Belly-breathing” with full exhalation is recommended, as well as gradual increase of workout intensity. If one still suffers from ETAP despite the preventive measures, several different treatments can be attempted to stop the pain. Simply slowing down or even walking for a short distance will stop the stitch in many runners. Another recommended technique is to lean forward and walk 10 steps. This maneuver can be combined with pushing firmly with the hand on the painful area beneath the ribcage. Still another treatment is to raise both arms above the head and inhale and exhale forcefully until pain subsides. Finally, the “acupinch”

Many theories of the cause of ETAP have been proposed, but the true cause remains unknown. condition resulted from the stomach and the liver pulling on the diaphragm, irritating the ligaments that connect these structures. However, swimming does not produce a downward force on these organs, suggesting that this theory is not valid. Other theories of causation include shallow breathing; strain on visceral ligaments by a fluid-engorged gut; spinal imbalances; and, most plausibly, contraction of the liver and spleen as they squeeze extra oxygen-rich red blood cells into the circulation, resulting in high pressure within these organs. For unknown reasons, ETAP most commonly affects younger athletes and those who are less conditioned. It is unrelated to body mass or gender. The amount of pre-exercise stretching is not related. The only consistent risk factor appears to be eating food within 3 hours of running, or drinking fruit juice or high-carbohydrate drinks just before, or during, exercise. Even though the cause of ETAP is unknown, several preventive measures have been suggested. These include allowing your pre-run meal to digest at least 2-3 hours before running, and avoiding fruit juice before and during running. Avoidance of dehydration

technique can be helpful. This acupressure technique involves pinching the upper lip between the thumb and index finger squeezing firmly until the pain subsides. The acupinch is also useful for the treatment of muscle cramps while running. As can be seen, the prevention and treatment techniques are varied, and reflect the uncertain cause of ETAP. Even though we don’t understand why they work, they are nonetheless effective in most runners. ETAP remains one of the more mysterious conditions in sports medicine. Fortunately however, despite the severity of its pain, it is a benign and self-limiting process. Dr. Wilson, a Melbourne native and Florida Gator, earned his doctorate degree from the Illinois College of podiatric Medicine in Chicago. After completing a surgical residence in Chicago, Dr. Wilson returned to Melbourne where he has been practicing with Melbourne Podiatry Associates for 30 years. The good doctor is passionate about his profession; running – a sport in which he has reveled for more than 45 years – and writing, particularly about all things running and foot related.
