In 2013 there were well over 100 races in Brevard County and ranged in distance from 1.3 miles to 100 miles. There were approximately 38,620 participants for the year! That is a lot of sweat, smiles, cheering, laundry and dedication! Congratulations to each and every one of you. Many of you probably know many of the “rules of the road” but for those of you that may be new to the sport or are getting back into it we thought we would help with some tips while training and/or at the races!

Share the Road

At any hour of any day, even if you are running alone, chances are you are going to cross paths with someone else. This may be a runner, walker, cyclist, a child on a tricycle or someone walking their dog. Please be considerate of their need to use the same road, sidewalk or trail. If you are with a group, please stay two abreast and allow others to pass without landing in a ditch or having to stop.

Use Your Words

For example, “good morning”, “looking good”, “CAR!!!” “on your left”. So what do you do when these things are said to you? If you are walking or running and you hear “on your left” we know it can be startling at first, but please move over to the right, especially if you are in a group. Acknowledge the comment with a smile or thank you.

phones that you can hear someone talking or in some instances YELLING. Our first and foremost goal at every race is keep everyone safe and we need to make sure you can hear instructions/comments from volunteers / race officials to keep you safe or on course. Imagine having a big mean angry rhino chasing you that someone needs to be warn you about!

Run Against Traffic

Run against traffic so you can observe approaching automobiles. By facing on-coming traffic, you may be able to react quicker than if it is behind you.

Ignore the Comments

Ignore verbal harassment/comments that may come your way. Also, use your discretion in acknowledging strangers. Look directly at others and be observant, but keep your distance and keep moving.

Runners are mostly friendly, considerate and kind people. Keep up the good work and if you are looking for more tips to be the most courteous runner on the block, follow some of the guidelines above or ask another runner, they will surely give you advice!

Tune IN

This tip comes from our Race Management Team. Please make sure that if you are wearing head-

When running in groups and sharing the road with others, courtesy is an important factor for everyone's fun and safety.

Disney Marathon effort brings Jackie Kellner closer to Boston dream by Mark Decotis

Jackie Kellner is no stranger to running having taken up the sport 30 years ago but she surely is coming into her own as evidenced by her effort in January’s Disney World Marathon, where she was one of hundreds of Space Coast residents to finish. Kellner, 65, of Melbourne, placed second in the 65-69 age group in 4 hours, 44 minutes and 48 seconds, shaving 15 minutes off her 2013 time and finding herself with five minutes of her Boston Marathon qualifying time. “I did not know I had placed until later that day after we arrived back home,” Kellner said. “My husband (Roy) was the one who pulled up the results. I knew my finish time was good. I was so excited. I started texting everyone I knew. I pulled up the results three times the next day just in case they had changed. “Placing in a marathon or qualifying for Boston was never a goal of mine. But things have changed lately, due to my very excellent health, and my love of running.” And now Kellner, a retiree and veteran of 15 marathons (eight Disneys, five Marine Corps and two New York City), has a plan. “I will give this one shot,” she said about Boston. “I plan to run the Space Coast full marathon (a Boston qualifier) this coming November. I have run the half the past seven years. I know the course. I only began to think about qualifying for Boston a couple of years ago but did not tell anyone. The first time I mentioned that to Roy he was very supportive. Last year I watched the Boston Marathon on TV and got really pumped. That afternoon I turned the TV on again and could not believe what I was seeing.” Kellner’s love for running isn’t confined to just lacing up her shoes and putting in the miles. She also is sharing her passion as codirector with Roy of the Flamingo 5K. “We had never been race directors before,” she said. “But I had raced for so many years and we both are very organized so we gave it a shot. Don and Denise (Piercy) at Running Zone were very helpful. I still

Everything went very well so we signed up again for 2014.” Kellner can be found out running six days a week with one of her favorite spots being the Melbourne Causeway on Saturdays

for a 10-miler. “For Disney this year I followed a good training schedule,” she said. “The July 2013 issue of “Runner's World” featured a training schedule that I followed. I will follow the schedule again for the Space Coast.

The Pregnant Runner By Richard C. Wilson, DPM Melbourne Podiatry Associates

Is running safe during pregnancy? Will it harm the mother? Or the baby? These are questions that have created controversy during recent years. Indeed, in the early 90’s, running during pregnancy was discouraged due to elevation of heart rate thought to be harmful to the fetus. Now, however, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has stated that running during pregnancy is safe and, that, with certain restrictions, exercise during pregnancy is recommended. If a woman runs regularly before pregnancy, she can usually continue it during pregnancy. However, if a woman is not already a runner, pregnancy is not the time to start. In that case, alternative exercises such as walking or swimming should be considered. The benefits of running during pregnancy are many. These include: prevention of gestational diabetes (diabetes arising during pregnancy); prevention of excessive weight gain; reducing backaches, constipation, bloating, and swelling; improvement of posture; improvement of mood; improvement of sleep; increasing energy; promotion of muscle tone, strength, and endurance; easier labor; and faster recovery after delivery. There are two things that pregnant runners need to be concerned about: overheating (especially in the first trimester), and falling (particularly in the second and third trimesters).

BREVARD ZOO FUN RUNs

Overheating and dehydration can be prevented by staying inside on hot, humid days and by drinking plenty of water. Wear comfortable clothing that will help the body remain cool. During pregnancy, certain hormones cause the body’s ligaments to become relaxed. This makes joints more mobile and more prone to injury. Additionally, the extra weight in the front of the body during pregnancy shifts the center of gravity, stressing the lower back and causing imbalance which can lead to falling. It is important to avoid slippery surfaces and uneven terrain. If you do start to fall, try to fall sideways or land on hands and knees, not on the abdomen. The ligaments of the feet also relax in pregnancy, so it is important to wear a very supportive shoe. A properly-fitted sports bra is also important to protect the breasts. If any of the following symptoms occur, stop running and contact your obstetrician: vaginal bleeding; dizziness; feeling faint; increased shortness of breath; chest pain; headache; muscle weakness; calf pain or swelling; uterine contractions; decreased fetal movement; or fluid leaking from the vagina. After delivery, it is important to begin a period of walking before resuming running. Usually, running can be resumed after the six-week postpartum check-up. If there were delivery complications, or if the delivery was a Caesarian section, it may take longer to resume running. Your obstetri-

Why I Run: Steve Hedgespeth By Mark DeCotis

West Melbourne’s Steve Hedgespeth, 35, has been a longtime, successful competitor on the Space Coast running scene. A systems engineer with degrees from the University of Maryland and Florida Tech, Hedgespeth is husband to Kelly and father to Kara, 7, and Colin, 5. He enjoys his running for several reasons.

I’m much more consistent running in the morning... – Steve Hedgespeth keep me sane. I take the kids out in the jogger stroller about once a week or so.

Why do I run? I began running in high

school. I wanted to be on a sports team and wasn’t really good enough to participate in any other sport. The cross country and track teams didn’t cut anybody. I really enjoyed improving my times and competing throughout high school and college. I still enjoy competing, but these days running is more about stress relief and enjoying the great Florida weather. Where do I run and why? Out of con-

venience, most of my weekday runs are from my house in West Melbourne. I really enjoy running over the Melbourne Causeway and through the beachside neighborhoods on the weekends. I also cross train at the gym a couple of times a week.

When do I run and why? I run in the

morning. I used to run in the evening after work, but my training was pretty inconsistent because things would always come up or I’d

be too exhausted to get in a good workout at the end of the day. I’m much more consistent running in the morning, but I’m not really a morning person. Those first couple of miles during early morning runs can be a little tough, but I usually feel pretty good by the end of it. With whom do I run? I usually run by

myself. It gives me time to think or just let my mind go blank for a while, which helps

than 20 years and haven’t had too many bad experiences. The one thing that really stands out in my mind is the 2003 Boston Marathon. My wife and parents made the trip to support me for the race. We wanted to see the city, but not do anything too strenuous the day before the race. We decided to take a whale watching cruise. I ended up getting really seasick and was unable to eat hardly anything for almost a full day before the race. To make things worse, the weather on race day was hot and I started way too fast. I’ve run a lot of hard races, but that one was the only one where I needed medical attention afterwards. It also still stands as my personal worst marathon time, but the overall Boston experience was incredible and I look forward to running it again one day.

15 Running Zone The Starting Line From MP: What is the best product out there

to help or counteract chafing while running?

Got a question about common running problems, shoes, aches & pains, racing, chili, beer, or animal crackers? (well, mainly the first 4) Send an email to pete@runningzone.com or tweet @runningzonefl with #askpete. Each month we will feature some of the questions and answers in our “Ask Pete” column. From AB: Ok, I know everyone and every

situation is different but generally what shoe would you suggest for a neutral runner with a high arch and a neuroma? The best ever for me was a pair of Pearl Izumi’s which I still have but they no longer make. They are really, really old but when desperate I pull them out. The Glycerin are pretty good. Thanks for any recommendation! Wow, way to start the column off with a tough one! Going in blind to pick the perfect shoe is quite a challenge but here we go! To solve this problem I would say thislet’s look at what you described your foot as and check out some choices that way. If you have been using shoes from the neutral/ cushion category I would say stick there. For a high-arch runner, I would recommend a neutral shoe with a higher instep or possibly an additional arch support orthotic. For a neuroma, you’ll want a wide toe box and a lot of cushioning in the forefoot, and possible an orthotic with some added metatarsal support. As for specific shoes, a few that fit that description would be the New Balance 1080, Brooks Glycerin, Adidas Energy Boost and the Nike Vomero. The Spenco Total Support insert has a semi-rigid arch support system, and more importantly, added metatarsal support to relieve any forefoot pressure. Another option for inserts would be the Aetrex L405, which offers metatarsal support and a little more padding than the Spenco Total Support. ..........................................................................

From GK: While I'm running it feels like my

calfskin tightens up to the point I have to stop on some of my runs. It seems to happen more often when I run on a tread mill. Do you have any suggestions or solutions to remedy this issue? I hate that now have the lung capacity but have to hold out due to this problem. Any feedback is appreciated. As far as calf tightness goes, it’s usually either:

A) a muscle cramp B) general muscle tightness C) muscle fatigue or D) a new or re-aggravated injury (strain) I would recommend proper hydration and electrolyte replenishment, getting a good dynamic warm-up and stretch before the run, static stretching after the run, and possibly some type of massage tool and/or compression sock or sleeve. A compression sock/ sleeve will not necessarily prevent an injury, but it will aid in a quicker warm-up and provide some performance benefits as well. As for the treadmill aspect, many people feel that you take less impact when running on a treadmill vs. the road, but that shouldn't really have any impact on calf tightness, especially if you are not utilizing the elevation feature. In general, anything that doesn't improve after 10 days of "self-treatment" should probably get checked out. Obviously, everyone's body and situation are different (and pain tolerance as well) so I would suggest monitoring the situation and see what happens.

Unfortunately this is a problem that many runners (new and experienced) suffer with. It can be an incredible painful and sometimes embarrassing injury. Any type of anti-friction agent should prevent chafingeven if you aren’t having any trouble now it can be worth applying proactively. For men, it’s typically the underarms, between the legs, on the feet, and nipples (not kidding). For women, it’s usually between the legs, on the feet and along the bust/sports bra line. Non-cotton, moisture-wicking performance apparel will help prevent chafing. There are a lot of other products out there right now, the main two being SportShield by 2Toms and Body Glide. SportShield is available in a roll-on tube and in towlettes, while Body Glide comes in roll-on sticks in a variety of formulas. As with anything else- try it out and see what works for you (before race day of course) and give us some feedback! ..........................................................................

From KS: I have a question for the expert! I haven't been running that long, but I have always had an issue with this. My question is: What is the primary cause of side stitches? And how do you avoid it? Thank you!

Great question! In the words of my high school coach, “It means you’re weak. Run faster.” In the real world, the causes can range from fatigue and/or muscle weakness, dehydration, or your stomach just being too full (or filled with the wrong stuff- see the chili and beer section). New runners may experience side stitches more frequently experienced runners. When running, labored or rapid breathing causes the lungs to expand and press down on the diaphragm, causing it to spasm. As your body adapts to training, breathing becomes less labored and problem should become less frequent and hopefully go away all together. Stop running (or slow down) and take long, slow deep breaths while stretching with both arms extended. Bend sideways at the waist to each side- not just the one causing the problem – and hold for 15-20 seconds per side. Repeat this as necessary. Getting a good warm-up and the right nutritional mix will help prevent them in the future but sometimes it will happen no matter what. Thanks for all the emails, keep ‘em coming!

All races provide participants with awesome technical (moisture wicking/non-cotton) tee shirts, Chronotrack timing and a festive post-race party. In addition, there will be a guest appearance by Zippy, our Gecko mascot, to start each of the free kids’ runs and to help with the awards presentation. Our standard overall and age group awards will be presented for each race along with door prizes and giveaways. There is a $10,000 purse in prizes and gift certificates for the top series finishers.
