Valentine's Day Inspires Love & Running Reading this month’s newsletter’s "Why I Run" feature on Marion and Skip Oswald and how running brought them together got us to thinking. ❤ It’s sharing that early morning run with your significant other or your closest friend or friends as the dawn kisses the horizon. ❤ It’s that priceless post-run feeling that wraps you in its gentle, loving embrace and brings that well-earned smile to your face as you slip into your morning or afternoon nap – when you’re not at work. ❤ It’s the feeling of finishing a run soaked to the skin from the pouring rain and knowing a warm shower awaits. ❤ It’s that first cool swig of water or sports drink after a hot, grueling summer run.

With Valentine’s Day approaching no month is more appropriate to have visions of love and running.

❤ It’s the feeling of stepping into your new shoes for the first time. ❤ It’s that wonderful, magical, once-in-alifetime feeling of accomplishment of crossing the finish line of the event for which you have trained for months. ❤ It’s enjoying the places the sport can take you both physically and spiritually. ❤ It’s the camaraderie and the competition. ❤ It’s giving everything you have to beat your most daunting opponent – yourself – and then reveling in the accomplishment. ❤ It’s leafing through last year’s running diary or calendar and saying to yourself: “I really did do that didn’t I.” ❤ It’s the post-run or post-race beer and bull sessions where every accomplishment like every fish ever caught gets bigger and better with time. Everyone knows and no one complains because everyone eventually earns the right to exaggerate. ❤ It’s running along the seashore or through freshly fallen snow or through the mountains’ mist. ❤ A tailwind. There are many, many more gifts running gives us each and every day. They are gifts of the heart, gifts of the mind, gifts that allow us to improve our lives and the lives of countless others.

The 5th Annual FLORIDA TODAY Corporate 5K Combines Camaraderie & Team Building Activities By Mark DeCotis Office parties and exercise don’t often go together but in this case they do. The 5th Annual FLORIDA TODAY Corporate 5K is billed as Brevard County’s largest outdoor office party combining the 5K with camaraderie, team building activities and beer. And participants get a head start on St. Patrick’s Day. The event is set for 6:45 p.m. March 12 at FIT Aviation at the Melbourne International Airport. More than 60 companies were represented in 2014 and 951 runners and walkers took times. Brad Daszynski of DRS was the overall winner while Health First’s Kim Hunger was the overall female winner. Team awards were presented in 16 different categories. Mike Acosta of Viera Pizza was the male CEO winner while Elizabeth Donaldson of Coastal Rose Runners captured the female CEO title. The event benefits United Way. “Corporate 5K is a unique race among the many racing and athletic events that are held in Brevard County because this event is focused on specifically companies and organizations for camaraderie and team spirit along with health and fitness and supporting a great local cause,” said Laura K Sanchez,

When lots of local companies come together in Brevard County, we can make an impact on health and the community through the event and giving back to United Way of Brevard. – LAURA K. SANCHEZ Running Zone Foundation events manager. “When lots of local companies come together in Brevard County, we can make an impact on health and the community through the event and giving back to United Way of Brevard.” To compete a team has to have at least four people and has to be under a business, organization, corporation or club. No individuals. There are friends and family of employees or members but they are only counted in the largest participation not the timing and scoring of teams. Race organizers hope for 75 teams to participate. Additional parking this year is courtesy of General Electric. For complete information on participating in the event visit http://brevardcorporate5k. com/

Why I Run: George "Skip" & Marion Oswald By Mark DeCotis

To mark Valentine’s Day we asked running couple George “Skip” and Marion Oswald of Cocoa Beach to honor us by participating in this month’s Why I Run feature. Marion was born in the Netherlands but grew up in different countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East because of her father’s job for Shell Oil. After graduating with a degree in International Law she moved to Brussels, Belgium, where she worked in the legal field for several international companies and lobbying organizations. Skip was born and raised in Bronxville, N.Y., but also lived in Connecticut and Illinois, and spent 10 years overseas. He made his career working for Chrysler for almost 30 years, finally becoming CEO of DaimlerChrysler Egypt. Skip retired in 2006. While on assignment in Belgium, Skip was running in-between races with the Hash House Harriers. That’s where he met Marion after a run. They sat down with a sandwich and a beer, and talked about running, traveling and skiing. Now, 19 years later, they still run, travel and ski. Why they run: Skip started running a mile in the 1960s after he read Kenneth Cooper’s books on aerobics, in order to control his weight and stay fit. Since then he has run more than 700 races, with a PR in the 5K of 19 minutes 45 seconds and a 3:23 marathon. Marion took up running in her late 30s for exercise and to decompress from a stressful job, as well as to widen her social circle. She and Skip made a habit of getting in a run after work every day. They started running races together in Belgium, and also ran races in Holland, France, Austria, Germany, Sweden, England and even Egypt. It sure made for a very scenic race to run 7K around the pyramids just outside Cairo. Marion and Skip feel that running adds balance to their lives in retirement. It keeps them focused on exercise, health and nutrition, and keeps them from getting bad habits. With whom they run and why: Since Skip and Marion retired, they have adopted running races as a hobby and run between 40 and 75 races a year as a couple. They try to run at least one race every weekend, and some weekends two or three, depending on the distance and where the races are held. Running all those races makes them appreciate the great organization done by the Running Zone, whose races consistently rank as some of their favorites. They enjoy the camaraderie of meeting fellow runners before and

Western Adirondacks, and are now working on a second one. They feel an eight- to 12-mile hike is a great substitute for a long run. Never mind where they are, their philosophy is to try and walk as much as possible, whether they go out for dinner, head for the shopping mall or visit the grocery store. If they have to use the car they always take the furthest parking spot from the store, and when visiting a major city they try to leave the car at their hotel and do everything on foot.

George “Skip” and Marion Oswald of Cocoa Beach are all smiles after the Bayfront 5K in Cocoa Beach.

Marion and Skip feel that running adds balance to their lives in retirement. It keeps them focused on exercise, health and nutrition, and keeps them from getting bad habits. after a race, and like the challenge of trying to improve their times and stay competitive in their age groups. Almost all of their traveling revolves around seeking out larger races and combining a good race with sightseeing and exploring new areas of the country. When they run and why: Marion and Skip go to races together, but each of them does the race at his or her own speed. They do crosstraining to prepare for each race; they try to walk two to five miles every day and on some days they add a six- to 15- mile bike ride in the afternoon. They increase the distance of the races they do in order to build up to run a half marathon or two every year. Where they run and why: Marion and Skip spend the summers in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. They keep running races every weekend, not only in New York State, but also across the border in Canada. Their long walks on the beach change to long hikes in the woods. They published a hiking guide to the South

Worst running experience they learned the most from: While running a very small 5K race in Northern New York, Marion was directed in the wrong direction and ended up running to the next town before she realized this could not be the race course. Meanwhile Skip became quite concerned that something had happened to her on the course, as she did not finish around her usual time; he got into the car with a race official to try and locate her. After running approximately almost six miles, Marion showed up at the finish line, and had a word with the race director. Lesson learned: be very familiar with your race or running course before you head out.

Q&A With Excalibur 10 Miler Inagural Winners Steve Hedgespeth & Meredith Van Veen By Mark DeCotis

It’s time for five questions on the Excalibur 10-miler with inaugural winners Steve Hedgespeth and Meredith Van Veen. Hedgespeth of West HEDGESPETH Melbourne won in 2014 in 58 minutes and 33 seconds. Van Veen of Vero Beach was the women’s winner in 1:07:14. QUESTION: How best to prepare for a

10-miler?

HEDGESPETH: My training is pretty much

the same for all races between 5K and half-marathon. Everybody is different, but I’ve found the best weekly training routine for me consists of a long run in the range of 12-18 miles, a tempo run in the range of 6-8 miles, and interval training with about 3 miles of fast repeats. Everything else is easy running or crosstraining. You’ve got to mix it up a bit though and take occasional breaks from speed training.

VAN VEEN: Since my collegiate running

career ended, I've kept my training pretty low key and really just focused on enjoying running. I don't really love short/fast workouts like intervals so training for the longer distance events have been my preference for sure. In preparation for Excalibur I incorporated some longer tempo runs as part of or in place of my usual long casual Sunday run to build strength and acclimate to the my goal race pace/longer, quicker effort. Q: How best to win a 10-miler?

SH: Even or negative splits are the way

to go for most people. You’ve got to be patient at first, push in the middle and give it everything you’ve got left in the end.

MVV: Focus on your own race but keep

contact with your competitors. Don't go out too fast. 10 miles can become a really long distance if you go out too fast based on others in the field. Q: Is it more a physical or mental

distance?

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

SH: I’d say more mental.

It is a good distance for me, because I don’t really have a whole lot of natural speed for the shorter races and also don’t really have the VAN VEEN attention span for an entire marathon. I had really good focus in the Excalibur last year and was peaking at the right time and just clicked physically and mentally.

MVV: I've always found the longer

Sunday, March 1,2015

Q: Toughest part of Excalibur?

Gecko Club Fun Run & Yoga Class

distance races to be more mentally challenging. Although the longer distances have been my strongest through my career, for me it's just keeping focus and mental toughness for the longer stretch of time that's a challenge. SH: The finish is pretty tough. You can

see the school from a long way away and think you’re almost done, but you’re really not, because of all the twists and turns.

MVV: I thought running on the dirt road

was mentally tough. The long, straight road was beautiful but not very mentally stimulating for me and I found it hard to keep focus. Q: Best part?

SH: The race atmosphere is great and

really entertaining and fun. I also really liked the part of the course that was on the gravel path. There’s something about running on gravel that makes me feel like I’m going faster than I really am. Plus it is a little easier on the legs than pavement or sidewalk.

MVV: I thought finishing in the stadium was pretty exciting for the runners and spectators. The Medieval theme was totally different and as always, Running Zone did an awesome job executing all the festivities and details.

The second running of the Excalibur 10-miler is March 1 at Viera High School. For complete information visit http://excaliburrun.com/

Wednesday, March 4th Starting at 5:30pm

All members are invited to participate for free! Non-members are asked to donate $5 to attend. We will meet at the store for a Club Member sale from 5:30-6:15, then we will run/walk around Wickham Park and return to Running Zone for the yoga class at 7:00pm. For information about this please email erin@runningzone.com. Participants are asked to bring a towel, and a mat (we have 6 to loan).

Why should runners do yoga?

Well, focusing on the key poses for areas of the body that are most overused or prone to injury for runners can help runners develop greater flexibility, fitness, and mental focus. Yoga can be used post-run to stretch and cool down or on its own for injury prevention, or to relax at the end of the day.

Lactic Acid: A Pain in the Muscle? By Richard C. Wilson, DPM Melbourne Podiatry Associates

Amy was disgusted. She had enjoyed the two-week Christmas visit to Minnesota, but did not get to run, or do any other exercise, for that matter. The days were spent eating and visiting. Now, back home, three pounds heavier, she felt sluggish. Amy decided to go for a brisk, threemile run. The first mile was slow, and she felt good, so she ran faster for the second two. Her body felt good, and she was glad to be running again. She woke up the next morning in severe pain. Her leg muscles were on fire, and attempts to stand or walk were excruciating. Amy, like most of us have at some point, was experiencing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). DOMS is characterized by muscle soreness that begins 12 to 24 hours after exercise and reaches a peak of pain at 24 to 72 hours. It subsides and disappears within seven days. Swelling is sometimes present as is tenderness to the touch. Stiffness in adjacent joints might occur. Temporary reduction in strength of the involved muscles also may occur. Since it was first reported in 1902, DOMS has been the subject of medical controversy, especially regarding its cause. For many decades, it was thought that a buildup of lactic acid (lactate) within the muscle produced the soreness. Now this theory has been largely rejected. But what is lactic acid, and what is the true cause of DOMS? Lactic acid was first discovered in 1780, but it was not until 1808 that its presence in human muscles was discovered. This chemical, long thought to be the cause of DOMS, has now been exonerated of all charges. In fact, it is now understood that lactic acid is a useful player in glucose metabolism, especially in anaerobic situations. Working muscles utilize glucose for fuel. In aerobic situations, glucose is oxidized into pyruvate, which then fuels the Krebs cycle. If insufficient oxygen is present, generally from exercising so vigorously that the muscle’s oxygenation cannot keep up with demand, an anaerobic situation is said to be occurring. In this situation, pyru-

For many decades, it was thought that a build-up of lactic acid (lactate) within the muscle produced the soreness. Now this theory has been largely rejected. vate is converted into lactic acid. Lactic acid has a beneficial effect, as it maintains energy production and allows exercise to continue. This it does by regenerating another chemical called NAD, which keeps energy production going. When the body eventually slows down, lactic acid oxidizes back into pyruvate and is then metabolized. Because lactic acid levels return to normal within one hour after exercise, its role as a “toxic metabolite” has been disproven. So what is the true cause of DOMS? According to the American College of Sports Medicine in is position paper on DOMS, the cause is microscopic damage to muscle fibers from exercise. It occurs from eccentric contractions of muscle, or when the muscle lengthens while force is applied. DOMS can occur in any type of athletic activity, including running in general and especially running downhill. It can occur in any athlete at any time, so prevention is elusive. Stretching has not been shown to prevent it. Proper, gradual training is important, as the severity of symptoms decreases as the muscles adapt to regular exercise. Some studies have suggested that wearing compression stockings may help to prevent DOMS, while other

studies have emphasized the value of proper hydration and electrolyte balance. Treatment of DOMS is symptomatic, since the symptoms resolve spontaneously within a week. Medical attention is seldom necessary. Simply resting the sore muscles for a few days usually suffices. Symptomatic treatments that are sometimes helpful include ice (favored by climbers who get DOMS); analgesic medication (such as Tylenol); anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen); sports acupressure or acupuncture; and sports massage (although the mechanism of its effectiveness is increasing the local blood supply to the muscle, NOT massaging the “built-up lactic acid” out). In conclusion, runners should be aware of DOMS, and should not be alarmed when it occurs. Dr. Wilson, a Melbourne native and Florida Gator,

earned his doctorate degree from the Illinois College of podiatric Medicine in Chicago. After completing a surgical residence in Chicago, Dr. Wilson returned to Melbourne where he has been practicing with Melbourne Podiatry Associates for 30 years. The good doctor is passionate about his profession; running – a sport in which he has reveled for more than 45 years – and writing, particularly about all things running and foot related.
