Two-thirds of our population are overweight or obese. If you felt like you were included in that number when you read that statement, we understand. Many of us have struggled with our own extra pounds, lack of motivation or direction and discomfort with who we are physically. And Coach Andy Dutra understands all too well. As a junior in college, Andy was more than 100 pounds overweight. The reality of just how much he needed a change happened when he noticed how winded he became just walking up a flight of stairs.

What will it take for you to make a change?

Today, you would never know Andy ever struggled with his weight. The Florida Tech PhD candidate and Running Zone Racing Team member is now lean, confident and helping others achieve their fitness goals at Tech’s Clemente Center as one of the head personal trainers and staff mentors. New Balance Melbourne, together with Coach Andy and Coach Tracy Simso have designed FIT FUTURE – a unique 10-week weight loss walking/jogging program. But it’s not only about exercise. In addition to the supportive group workouts and camaraderie, there will also be weekly educational sessions about the proper approach to weight loss, nutrition, injury prevention, staying motivated and more.

Participating in your first road race may be a bit like flying into an unfamiliar airport for the start of a fabulous vacation. While you’re excited about being there, you may feel out of place, wondering what to expect or where to go. Below, we offer some tips and advice to help orient you on the way to the finish line. It is good to register for the race you’ve picked as early as possible. First, most races offer a discount for early registration and those early numbers allow the race director to plan on the appropriate quantities and sizes of the race shirts; fluids, food and other race amenities.

It is natural to feel nervous for a day or today before the race. Once you’ve registered, find out where and when you can pick up your race bag or packet as some races don’t offer race-day pick up or may charge an extra fee. For any of the Running Zone Foundation events, you can pick up your packet the week before each race at Running Zone beginning on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Registration and packet pick-up are also available day of race but getting your stuff early will help you keep from having to rush on race morning. Your race bag or packet will contain your race number, pins to attach the number to the front of your shirt or shorts, race information and goodies and/or coupons from sponsors. Attached to your race number, you’ll find a plastic orange strip that you will need to detach. This strip is called a D-Tag and contains a tiny silicon chip and aluminum antenna. This is what will record the time when you cross the start and finish lines, providing race organizers and you with your exact race time. Chrono Track, the makers of the D-Tag, has provided a short video to show you how to properly attach the little orange alien to one of your shoes. Please view it at http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=rxAjCZQcy3w. If you have any questions, feel free to ask race personnel or fellow athletes for help! It is natural to feel nervous for a continues on page 5

Athletes mingle as they line up for the start of the 2011 Firecracker 5K. Running Zone Foundation events place markers along the side of the starting area to give you an idea of where you should line up. If you anticipate running a 9-minute-per-mile pace, you’d line up behind that marker.

Those who belong to the Running Zone Racing Team are much like the rest of us – trying to balance their running and walking with family, careers and this amazing game called life. They also have a special something that allows them to go out of their way to help and encourage others in and through their sport of passion. “We feel they are our ambassadors,” said Denise Piercy, who co-owns Running Zone with her husband, Don. “They represent how a runner behaves; how they treat others; how they help others and help support the community through their racing.” Below we introduce the 2012-13 Running Zone Racing Team. We hope you’ll take the time to get to know some of them this season. You’ll be glad you did!

Have some fun with your racing. Several of the Running Zone Foundation events offer prizes for the best costume. Here are just three of the many who came ready for a good time at the 2011 Ghostly Gecko.

Come join us at Running Zone every Thursday at 6 p.m. for our fun runs and walks - we provide the fluids! On the last Thursday of each month we also provide free pizza and lots of cool giveaways! And as a special treat this month, our July 12 fun run will end at Long Doggers on Post Road. Participants will have their choice of a free draft beer or half-off on an appetizer.

C’mon out & join the fun!

day or today before the race. It is helpful to remember that you have prepared for the event and set two main objectives for your first race: (1) finish and (2) enjoy the experience. Once race day arrives, give yourself plenty of time to get to the site to leave time to stretch; use the bathrooms or porto-lets, if necessary; and do some gentle walking or jogging to warm up a bit. This is not the day to try anything new in the way of shoes, clothing, pre-race fluids or fuel. Race in shoes and clothing that you have worn during training and know will keep you comfortable. Most shorter races do not have an area to check in a bag so you might consider keeping your car key in your pocket or tied on your shoelaces – don’t forget to try that on a training run first to make sure it is comfortable. You may feel out of place or that you somehow don’t belong but you’ll quickly find that the other participants are a friendly lot so don’t hesitate to smile at people, ask questions or start a conversation – especially after the race – when any anxiety that existed in the pack before the race has been replaced by feelings of self-satisfaction.

About 15 to 20 minutes before the race is to start, participants will begin lining up behind the starting line. If you are unsure where to go – just ask someone or follow the crowd. If this is your first race or you are a slower walker or runner, plan on lining up toward the back of the group. This will allow the faster runners and walkers to move forward unimpeded. After a few races, you will get a general idea of the best place for you to line up. As the countdown toward the race start begins, you’ll notice an increased air of excitement among your fellow athletes and spectators. This often provides an extra adrenaline rush that makes running fast seem so easy that many will start out at a pace much faster than they can maintain. Instead, try to take some deep breaths, tell yourself to relax and focus on your own journey. Once the race starts, stay to the right of the course unless you are passing someone else. Most courses are marked at each mile so you will have a pretty good idea where you are relative to the finish line and can continues on page 10

Out With the Old, In With the New! By Patti Sponsler

Time moves swiftly, both on the race clock and off. It’s hard to believe that July is already here! That means the 2012-13 Running Zone Foundation Race Series will be kicking off with the Firecracker 5K on July 4 at 7 a.m. at the Liberty Bell Museum in Melbourne. We’re still closing the books on last season and what a great season it was! n Our seven-race Series had more than 7,000 walkers and runners of all ages, shapes and sizes participate in the family-friendly distances that ranged from 3K to 5K. n With fun-themed events to encourage the younger set – as well as those young at heart – 22% of our finishers were ages 14 and under and teams from 41 local elementary and middle schools competed for the School Participation awards. Those numbers

do not include all the tiny tots who toddled through our free kids’ runs with Zippy, Running Zone’s mascot. n Thanks to a partnership with PLANET KID, we were able to begin offering free childcare during the races so parents could race worryfree and then join their youngest in the kids’ run. n Thirty-four corporate and open teams participated in the Series, helping to build both fitness and camaraderie among the members. n Thanks to all of our generous sponsors, tireless volunteers and amazing runners and walkers. Because of your support, the Foundation was able to donate race proceeds of $39,000 back into our community this past season and that total doesn’t yet include proceeds from the Run for the Gecko Hawaiian Luau 5K! So, here we go again with the new season. The Series offers the same seven events, as last year but with a few changes you’ll appreciate. The Brevard Zoo’s Monkey Madness 3K on March 2 will offer two wave starts to help ease the congestion that has developed due to the event’s huge popularity. The “No Monkey Business” wave will be for those who can finish the course in less than 20 minutes while “The Scenic Route” will be for those who prefer a more leisurely pace. Also this season, the April 6 Pirate

Plunder 2-Miler gets rid of the obstacle course and becomes an evening race from Meg O’Malleys. What better place for a post-race pirate party? On May 11, we’ll be celebrating the 10th anniversary at the race that started it all – Run for the Gecko Hawaiian Luau 5K. Every finisher will receive a special commemorative beach towel! The new season once again offers a $10,000 purse to the Series fastest and this year, the top three overall males, females and top male and female Master (40+) will win cash, instead of merchandise, plus free entry to the 2013-14 Race Series. Age group winners three deep will enjoy generous gift certificates to Running Zone. Those who wish to be eligible for Series awards must complete a minimum of four of the Series events and points from up to six races will be counted toward the final scores. All of the Series races will again offer attractive moisturewicking, non-cotton race shirts; Chronotrack D-tag timing; instant printouts of results including pace-per-mile; free child care; free kids’ runs: a festive post-race party; standard overall and age group awards plus amazing door prizes and random give-a-ways. Showdown Lowdown By Patti Sponsler

It’s funny how a quick comment can often lead to something big. The inaugural Brevard County Showdown Championship was borne of a quip made by Mo Johnson, a Space Coast Runners’ board member. “I said it would be a good idea to get all the series winners together for a race,” said Johnson referring the three Brevard road-racing series that include the Running Zone Foundation Race Series, Space Coast Runners Runner of the Year Series and the Titusville Running Series. “Running Zone really took off with it and put it together.” The June 9 evening event began with the Showdown championship 5K. The invitation-only and free elite race was an honor reserved solely for those who had won an overall or age group award in one or more of the three Series during the 2011-12 season. Indialantic’s Dillon McGhee, who had taken the 20-24 age group in the RZ Series, and West Melbourne’s Michael

Fisher, who took the overall spot in the same Series, ran shoulder-to-shoulder through the first half of the spectatorfriendly two-loop courses near the Eau Gallie Civic Center. McGee pulled away from Fisher with about half a mile to go, earning the Championship victory in 16 minutes and 33 seconds. “Michael and I worked together through much of the race,” said McGee, a rising senior who runs track and crosscountry for Florida Gulf Coast University. “With about half a mile left, I pulled away. He tried to pull up but I got away.” Fisher very nearly lost second place as four-time SCR Runner of the Year Series champ and 2010 RZF Series victor, John Davis, closed in at the finish. Fisher hit the line in 16:39.0 with Davis just 3/10th of a second behind in 16:39.3. “This was a good race for the summer,” said McGee who ran a 15:44 personal best 5K on the track at the USF Invitational in March and won the 20-24 age group in this season’s Running Zone Foundation Race Series. “I enjoyed the race and all the people who cheered us on.”

After cooling down from the event, McGee also noticed that the weather was getting ugly. “The clouds were really rolling in,” he said. “I looked at the radar on my phone and thought ‘in another 30 minutes it is going to start boomin’.” Sure enough, Mother Nature had her own idea of a showdown and unleashed her fury – in the form of atomic lightning, gumball-sized hail, 35-mile-per-hour gusts and a driving rain - on those participating in the open 5K that had started after the elite race was finished. “It was pretty scary,” said Palm Bay’s Rene Dunne who ran with the open field after winning second place in the elite

You had to wade through some of the puddles that were hitting mid-calf.” While merciful friends plucked some runners off the course and other athletes huddled under neighborhood porches until things calmed down, race results listed continues on page 9

181 athletes who stuck it out to the finish, including Iowan Ben Fish, who won the open event in 17:11. “It was different because you were not only running against other people but against the elements,” he said. “The lighting was really crashing down when I went back out to find my wife.” Most people were laughing about the adventure once they were snug and dry inside the Eau Gallie Civic Center. Plenty of beer and Smokey Bones BBQ helped to promote a jovial mood as the awards ceremony began. In addition to the Showdown 5K awards that were presented (visit http:// www.runningzone.com/event_results for complete results of both elite and open races), organizers from all three Series used the venue to honor their respective Series champions. Never Too Late by Patti Sponsler

With her easy smile and ever-ready word of encouragement, Palm Bay’s Rene Dunne was the perfect person for Prevention Magazine to feature in their “Great Beginnings Start Here” story in the August issue. The 31-year-old team captain of the Running Zone Racing Team and avid Space Coast Runners board member sent in her story when the magazine asked the question “did training for a 5K change your life and how?” Hard to believe now, but in 2009 Rene had been a smoker for 17 years and was carrying an additional 40 pounds on her 5’5” frame. Life began to change for both Rene and her husband, Les – also, a smoker - when they decided to take up running in March of that year to help them break the stinky habit and lose some weight. Four month later, the couple finished their first race – the July 4 Firecracker 5K – and never looked back. These days both the Dunnes are smokefree, 40 pounds lighter and regulars on the local road race scene. Prevention flew the couple up to New York City in May for an exciting photo shoot and a fun weekend in Manhattan. Be on the lookout for the story in the August issue that will be on shelves this week. The Wahoo Fitness Blue HR heart rate strap is the world’s first Bluetooth Smart heart rate strap made for the iPhone 4S. This heart rate strap and App combination transforms your iPhone into an all-in-one training device; great for runners, cyclists, and other fitness enthusiasts. The Wahoo Fitness Blue HR heart rate strap connects wirelessly to the iPhone 4S without the need for any adapters and delivers accurate real-time heart rate data through the free Wahoo Fitness App. Additionally, the open API allows other popular Apps, such as RunKeeper, MapMyRide, 321Run, and Cyclemeter to work with the Blue HR. With the Wahoo Blue HR and your favorite fitness App, you now have your heart rate data, playlists, phone, GPS maps and more-- all in one device!

Garmin has taken the Forerunner 310XT to the next level with the new Garmin Forerunner 910XT! It’s Garmin’s first multisport watch to offer extensive swim metrics, including swim distance, stroke identification, stroke count and pool lengths. It also computes your swolf* score to help you gauge your swimming efficiency. The waterproof design and easy operations make it suited for other water sports, including paddle boarding. On dry land, Forerunner 910XT offers many of the features of Garmin’s advanced cycling computers and sport watches to accurately capture your time, distance, speed or pace and more. It is Garmin’s first multisport device to incorporate a barometric altimeter for highly accurate elevation data, including ascent, descent and grade. Configurable data fields let you customize multiple training pages for each sport. Set up vibration alerts to give a silent nudge when you hit a split, when it’s time to take nutrition or if you need a little feedback to stay within range of your goals. With these high-level features and up to 20 hours of battery life, the 910XT is ideal for athletes training for ultras or iron distance triathlons. For advanced training, the 910XT is compat-

ible with ANT+™ sensors, including the optional speed/cadence sensor for cycling or premium heart rate monitor (included with some models). And for those datadriven athletes, the 910XT also is compatible with ANT+ power meters, like Vector™, Garmin’s pedal-based power meter. Make the most of every workout by uploading to Garmin Connect.
