If you have been running in Brevard County for any time, you will probably recognize the name Doug Butler, or “Coach” to most of us. This past February, Coach was recognized by the National Federation of State High School Association’s 2012 Boys’ State Cross Country Coach of the Year. This past fall his boys’ cross-country team captured the 1A state championship, giving Butler and the Tigers an unprecedented 12 state championships. A feat unmatched in Florida’s history. His consistency and tireless dedication to his athletes is amazing. And this dedication is again being recognized.

ing and it gives me goose bumps to even think about it. Passing that finish line and getting that medal is a major accomplishment.” As for her advice to the first-timers: “When you hit that wall you’ve got to keep going. Once you get past that wall you’ll be OK. Make sure you stay on your training runs during the week and make sure you get to the long runs. “And trust the training, stick to your intervals.” That Galloway’s method is a combination of walking and running still brings questions from some who believe only those who run continues on the next page

Forty years and 300,000 athletes later Jeff Galloway is still going strong. An encyclopedia of running knowledge and a tireless advocate for fitness done right Galloway helped launch Running Zone’s first Jeff Galloway Training Program for the Dec. 1 Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon with a visit to the store on June 8. Speaking to a gathering of two dozen people comprised of newbies, veterans and the just plain curious Galloway, 67, shared the wisdom gleaned over a lifetime in the sport. And while his accomplishments include being a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic team, being a member of the Road Runners Club of America Hall of Fame, being recognized as Runner’s World magazine as one of its 18 experts and being part of the Nike Walk
In addition to working with Running Zone Director of Customer Service Valarie Feldbauer, who is taking the lead in the local training effort, Galloway will be the keynote speaker at the pre-race dinner on the eve of the 42nd running of the Space Coast Marathon. But before that date arrives, Galloway on June 8 focused on getting the training program and the trainees off to a strong start. His message resonated with Angel Hampton, 35, of Palm Bay, a court reporter and mother of two who has run four marathons using the Galloway program beginning in 2010. Hampton is one of the pace group leaders for the local program and will help spread the message. “It’s injury-free training and you can get

the 26.2-mile distance can call truly themselves marathoners. Not so replies Galloway with the patience and ease of someone who has been fending the query off for four decades. Citing 17 trips to Athens, Greece, the birthplace of the marathon and the cradle of the Olympics, of which the marathon still remains a key event, Galloway said the first marathoners in the first Olympic marathon in 1896 walked and received medals so why shouldn’t their modern day brethren. In the bigger picture, Galloway credited the give and take with the one-third of a million of those brethren with providing invaluable lessons. “In the early years I made mistakes,” he said. “I would give them advice as best I knew. They’d get back to me and say ‘this isn’t working.’ I kept trying until it worked. “Now we’ve got a method that works for 99-point whatever (percent). It’s really a wonderful thing for me to get that constant feedback which averages a little over one hundred runners a day. That’s what has fueled my advice. “Basically I’m more experienced and experience is the most important thing when it comes to giving people advice. If someone has trained a dozen people they’re very unlikely to know all the ramifications of the advice they give. I certainly was in my early years. Now I see those ramifications. I have steered away from the bad stuff and going towards what people can do.” And he has no plans to deviate from that method anytime soon. “I don’t think I’ll ever retire,” he said. “It is such a joy to me to help solve people’s problems, which is what I do most of

the day everyday. “And then to get that feedback about the things that they have not only been able to do with running but how it’s turned on brain circuits and allowed them to do many other things in their lives that they never thought were possible.” Galloway’s training for the Space Coast Marathon began on June 9. Halfmarathon training begins on Aug. 18. The cost is $95 for new members and $75 for Galloway alumni. 5 Running Zone The Starting Line
Track beckons athletes of all ages by Mark DeCotis
June 5 marked the season debut of the Running Zone Gecko Club Track Session and another step in the return to competition for one of Brevard County’s top athletes. Twenty-eight participants ranging in age from three years old, in the person of Lucas Hunger, to 61, in the person of Harry Hillmer, gathered in a light drizzle under leaden skies at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy for the first of four meets in June. They ran in five events – the 100-, 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter runs and the 4x400 relay - in a fun, relaxed atmosphere that spoke more to camaraderie than competition. But that’s not to say each participant didn’t strive to be the first across the finish line, be it to measure their efforts against their peers or themselves. Among them was Palm Bay’s Kim Hunger, an accomplished cyclist and triathlete who is taking the first steps toward regaining her form after giving birth to her second child 10 months ago. Hunger, a three-time overall female winner of the Battle of the Bridges sprint triathlon, also is competing in the Running Zone Race Series and used her June 5 appearances in all four individual events as a stepping stone. “I like the endorphins and it’s always good to push yourself and see what you can do,” said Hunger, 32, a Health First pharmacist. “I’ve been trying to get the drive back to

want to run hard and compete. I’ve been working on my swim for the triathlons.” Hunger began running in third grade, competing in the Hershey Track Meets and carried it through her time at Palm Bay High. She attributes the lifelong experience and base fitness to her successes and now she and husband Dan are passing the passion to son Lucas, who completed the 100- and 400-meter events, and hopefully some day to daughter Aliyah. “He just loves it,” Hunger said of her son. “I don’t know if it’s setting an example or if he just has my same drive.”

Daszynski and Crate rally to score Pineapple Man victories By Mark DeCotis
Brad Daszynski and Jessica Crate made up ground to score overall and first woman victories respectively in the June 2 running of the Melbourne Beach Rotary Pineapple Man Triathlon in Melbourne Beach. The 28th edition of the race, which filled its 750-participant quota in January, was run on a warm, humid, breezy morning where clear skies eventually gave way to overcast. Daszynski, 31, a DRS engineer from Suntree and Crate, 28, an entrepreneur and triathlon coach from Melbourne, both trailed exiting the .34-mile swim in the Indian River Lagoon, Daszynski by 25 seconds and Crate by more than two minutes. In fact, Daszynski still trailed after the 15.4-mile bike leg and used the day’s fourthbest time of 21 minutes and nine seconds, second among men on the 3.4-mile run, to win. Crate caught and passed defending women’s champion Ashley Shiver, 22, on the Pineapple Man overall winner Brad Daszynski bike, erasing the deficit, and maintained her cools down after his victory. edge on the run. Crate finished the run in a third-best sprint-distance races respectively. 21:01 to a race-best 20:49 for Shiver. But But Sunday’s victory was special. Crate’s 38:42 bike leg proved insurmountable “This is the biggest win yet,” Daszynski for Shiver whose bike time was 42:25. said. “This is a big race, always the biggest. Daszynski finished in 1:08:08, bestI wanted to give it what I had. A lot of it was ing second-place Edson Soares, 41, by 46 mental. seconds. Crate crossed the line in 1:10:42 “I gave it all I had on the run to catch (10th overall) to 1:12:01 for Shiver (14th them.” overall). The victory was Daszynski’s third as Daszynski is in his fifth year as a tria triathlete, the first two coming in 2011 in the Melbourne Beach Dad’s Day and Health First athlete.
“I still consider myself kind of new,” he said. And the biggest lesson he’s learned: “The best triathletes don’t have a big weakness. They’re solid in all three for sure.” Crate ventured into triathlon after suffering a broken foot in the 2011 Boston Marathon and continues to find success, having 10 victories to her credit. “I’ve been working on the swim, it’s definitely not my strength,” Crate said. “I just put the hammer down,” she added about the bike. “I just laid it down and put it into the wind and didn’t look back. “I had to work really hard on the bike and the run to keep up or catch up (with Shiver). If you give up a second you could lose by a second.” The Male Masters victory went to John Dodd, 48, who finished fifth overall in 1:10:12 while the Female Masters Victory went to Melbourne Beach’s Tricia Rydson, 40, who finished in 1:16:20, good for 43rd overall. Five hundred and 95 competitors began the race with 592 recording finishing times. Race proceeds benefitted Rotary International Polio Plus, Leukemia-Lymphoma Society on behalf of Team In Training, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the South Brevard Sharing Center and the Friends of the Melbourne Beach Library, race director Don Riordan said. Riordan went on to extend heartfelt appreciation to the many public safety personnel volunteers, community members, town officials, businesses and others who toiled to make the event a success. “As we approach this event’s 30th anniversary in 2015, it is fun to think of how this started as a small local fund raiser and has now become a tradition that people from all over the country look forward to taking part,” Riordan added. “Our efforts will always focus on keeping the event fresh, adding something that enhances the experience both for the athletes and sponsors and maintaining that ‘welcome’ hospitality of a small, pristine Florida town.” The inaugural Pineapple Kidz Triathlon and Duathlon for children ages 7 to 16, directed by Space Coast Youth Multisports, preceded the main triathlon on Saturday, drawing more than 75 participants.

Running Zone takes unique approach to inaugural 10-miler
By Mark DeCotis
Sometimes great ideas just take time. That’s the case of the Running Zone Foundation’s newest event, the March 2, 2014 debut of the Excalibur 10-miler that has the potential to join the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon as another jewel in the crown of Space Coast races. “The Running Zone Foundation has been discussing a 10-mile event for years,” said Denise Piercy who co-owns Running Zone with husband Don. “We have had it on the table seriously for about two years. “This year seemed like a perfect time to do it.” Running Zone Race Management discussed themes for a while after the decision was made to host the event and Piercy believes the thinkers struck gold. “Once we came up with the crown idea (as the finisher’s medal) that went along with the medieval theme, we knew it was a winner,” Denise Piercy said. “I would run for a crown any day. I remember hearing that if you ran Disney Princess, you got a crown and I was so excited until I found out it was a crownshaped finisher medal. This will be a crown.” The winners receive an Excalibur sword. “We built and built on the medieval theme and have come up with so many really fun ideas,” Denise Piercy said. “We are so excited about it now.” That excitement is evidenced by the wording Piercy chose to promote the race on the Running Zone’s website event calendar. “The Only Medieval Themed
10-Miler in the Land. Live the Legend, Find Your Glory on the Quest for Excalibur as an Individual Runner or on a Relay team of two. “Methinks I hear the duelists warm ing up in the fields. From Princes and Princesses to Jester and Wenches, choose your fate in the Quest for thy Magical Excalibur Sword. With a charge towards your competitors for the start, thine hearts shall indeed be thumping. “Further down thee path onwards to thy destination, thou journey shall be filled with sights from gallant steeds and chivalrous knights to wenches offering water for a bit of gold coin. Once thy cross into thee far away land and complete thou Quest to retrieve The Excalibur, a feast for all and crowns awarding the every brave soul for pursuing the voyage. Fare thee well my good people, The Quest for Excalibur has begun.” That the race will be run along the undeveloped fringes of Viera only adds to the theme. “A. Duda & Sons has given us permission to run on Powerline Road which is their private property so that the course will be a wonderful full loop around Viera,” Piercy said. “Once we get the word out about the finisher crown, this will be a huge event. “And when everyone finds out you can run a 5-mile x 2 relay, everyone can join it for a crown. We are planning on 1,000 entrants for our first year because it is all about getting the word out. Once that happens we think it will grow rapidly from there.” For information on the race visit www.runningzone.com/calendar2

Speed, talent just part of the equation for Team Running Zone by Mark DeCotis
Team Running Zone has been selected for the 2013-2014 racing season with several goals in mind. “Our team captain’s goal is to get first in the series,” Running Zone co-owner Denise Piercy said. “(Husband and co-owner) Don and I just like to have good people doing good things in the community.” The team is captained by Rene Dunne, 32 and consists of 29 athletes, 13 on the female side and 16 on the male side. Racers range in age from 81-year-old Jack Lightle to 27-yearold Beth Whalen with a strong collection of running accomplishment and achievement in between. But the criteria for selection, while including being competitive, are more wide-ranging. “We select people that would be good Running Zone ambassadors in the community and are regular participants who place in their age groups,” Denise Piercy said. “We are looking for good sportsmanship, a passion for the sport, and leadership.” The women’s team is comprised of Dunne; Tracy Dutra, 40; Michelle Smurl, 44; Cathy Friedel, 49; Anne Dockery, 65; Lisa Petrillo, 39; Lorraine Peterson, 54; Kim Hunger, 32; Roberta
Osterling, 78; Felicity Cunningham, 40; Julie Hannah, 39; and Jessica Wiedenbauer, 30. The men’s team is Doug Butler, 50; Dave Hernandez, 48; Steve Chin, 44; Steve Hedgespeth, 35; Doug Nichols, 50; Bob Pecor, 78; Andy Dutra, 28; Peter Clusener, 36; Joe Hultgren, 53; Ron Abel, 30; Jim Schaeffer, 42; Scott Larson, 41; Jonathan Howse, 37; and Les Dunne, 37. “I feel honored they still want me on the team,” Butler said. “It's been a long road for me. This is the start of my 30th year running and competing at what I would call a decent level. “I still enjoy racing and training hard to be the best I can be, even though my best times are far in my past. I had run at least one sub17-minute 5K every year since 1986 until last year. That was a 26-year streak. So, I set a goal to do it again this year. If I could run 16:59 at 50 that would be big for me. Staying healthy and running everyday is a successful year.” Lightle had similar sentiments. “I am still at it and delighted to be on the Running Zone team this year, because Denise and Don are a class act,” Lightle said. “They have done a lot to promote running and road racing in Brevard. “Bottom line, I like being a part of a team, as I did in high school, the Navy, college, postcollege and now. A successful season will be achieved if I am able to show up for most races and do well, relative to my age group at the state level.” Rene Dunne as well had the big picture in mind. “A successful season for me would be for everyone to finish their season happy, injury free and proud of themselves,” she said. “Our goal as Team Running Zone is not only to be fast but also be great role models for those just beginning in the running community.” For her part Julie Hannah is not only fast but also still establishing herself in the running community. The small business owner and mother of twins has been running for only five years but is in the 19-minute 30-second range for the 5K and is hoping to get her times down. “I just started running . . . after I had my girls (Kayla and Madison, 9) and to get back in shape,” Hannah said. “I found out who coach continues on the next page

The Anatomy of a Running Shoe by Richard C. Wilson, DPM, Melbourne Podiatry Associates
Unlike most other sports, running does not require a lot of expensive equipment. All you need is a pair of running shoes (unless you are a barefooted runner). A good pair of running shoes can usually be had for less than $150.00 and should last you for up to 1000 kilometers. This article will discuss the basic construction and components of the running shoe. A future article will discuss types of shoes and how to properly select a shoe based on a runner’s foot type and other factors. The Modern running shoe is a relatively recent phenomenon. The Dassler brothers (Rudolf and Adolf) of Germany are credited with creating the running shoe in their family shoe factory in 1924. The original shoes were made of leather. During World War II, the brothers had a famous falling out and Rudolf, the older brother, left to start the Puma shoe company. Adolf (or “Adi”) started the Adidas (from his name Adi Dassler) company. Other companies were started but shoe designs did not change much over the next 20 years. In the early 1970's, Bill Bowerman, track coach at the University of Oregon, experimented with home-made polyurethane insoles in his garage and eventually formed the Blue Ribbon Sports Company (later Nike) in 1971. The modern running shoe was born! All running shoes consist of 3 components: the upper (top portion); the outsole (or sole); and the midsole. The upper is usually made of a light weight, synthetic material that is usually soft, somewhat form-fitting, and that has breathability. This breathability allows heat to be released from the shoe, keeping the foot cooler. The separate strip of the upper over the middle of the foot is called the tongue. This structure prevents the laces from rubbing against the foot and also makes it easier to get shoes on and off. The laces of the shoe run through holes called eyelets that run along the upper on either side of the tongue. The sides of the upper are called quarter panels. The portion of the upper covering the toes is called the toe box. The toe box should be high and roomy enough to avoid pressure on the tops and ends of the toes. The top of the upper in the heel area is called the heel collar. It supports the heel and ankle. It usually has a notch for the Achilles tendon called
All running shoes consist of 3 components: the upper (top portion); the outsole (or sole); and the midsole. – Dr. RICHARD Wilson the Achilles tendon notch or heel tab. Located beneath the heel collar is a firm plastic structure on the inside of the upper in the heel area. This is the heel counter, a very important structure that wraps around and stabilizes the heel. The upper is stitched on its underside to a structure called the last. Many types of materials are used for the last and their thickness and firmness determine a shoes flexibility and stability. The last in turn is attached to the middle portion of the shoe known as the midsole. In most shoes, a soft removable insert is provided. This lies within the shoe over the midsole and is referred to as a sockliner. This device functions as a cushion and can be removed and replaced by a variety of overthe-counter or prescription insoles. The midsole lies between the upper and the outsole. It is considered to be the “heart” of the running shoe. It is made of a shock absorbing foam material. It loses this shock absorbing ability after 300 to 500 miles, so a runner should replace the shoes after this distance. Heat accelerates midsole breakdown, so never store running shoes in a car, trunk, or garage. The bottom of the shoe is called the outsole. It is the portion of the shoe that contacts the ground, and is usually made of carbon
rubber. It resists wear and provides traction. It may have a studded or waffle design to enhance traction. Most running shoes have a firm, stiff device added to the arch portion of the midsole to decrease torsion and flexion. This device is called the shank. It allows the shoe to bend at the toes rather than at the arch. Some shoes wrap the shank up the medial side of the shoe, so that it functions as a medial post to control pronation. Although running shoes differ from each other in certain features, the main components discussed in this article are common to almost all shoes. It is important for a runner to understand the components of a shoe. This knowledge will help the runner to select the most advantageous shoe. Dr. Wilson, a Melbourne native and Florida Gator, earned his doctorate degree from the Illinois College of podiatric Medicine in Chicago. After completing a surgical residence in Chicago, Dr. Wilson returned to Melbourne where he has been practicing with Melbourne Podiatry Associates for 30 years. The good doctor is passionate about his profession; running – a sport in which he has reveled for more than 45 years – and writing, particularly about all things running and foot related.
