Every summer (when race season slows down) we take the family somewhere for a vacation. One of our favorite things to do when we go on vacation is our morning runs. When some go on vacation it means a break from everything and a time to indulge. But I believe some of the best memories are from running and being able to see the sights of a new place never explored before. Many go out sightseeing using public transportation, but with running, for some reason, you are able to see so many more sights. It also provides an opportunity to meet some of the local residents and to get a flavor of the area as well as burning some vacation calories! It has become a vacation tradition in our family to always pack our running gear. Some of my fondest memories were when we visited the west coast and running in San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge (at 50 degrees in July) was unbelievable. I also remember a “rave” run in Monterey where we saw hundreds of seals along the water as well as a trail run in the Sequoia Mountains. And every year when our entire extended family gets together, we all go for a run together. It may not be far or fast but we all have a great time together! The morning run becomes a great way to scope out the area and more importantly, decide where to eat and shop. You should give this a try on your next vacation!

The team known as Jackson’s Jets and Joggers exemplify how easily a team can evolve and how the camaraderie and support of a team can deepen friendships and make life richer. When Sharon Loines gave up chocolate during the Thanksgiving weekend of 2008, the Mila Elementary Assistant Principal had no idea how that one step toward better health would ripple through the lives of her friends and co-workers. “Sharon was such a chocoholic that Hershey had a line just for her in Pennsylvania,” quipped Dr. Betsy Butler, Mila’s Principal at the time. “Watching her keep the faith day after day and stay committed to her decision made me realize that if she could stop eating chocolate, I could quit smoking.” Butler, who had puffed her way through three packs a day for almost 23
years, went smoke-free on June 2, 2009. Two days later she began her love affair with running. “I literally went home and ran three miles at about 12 minutes per mile,” she said. “I was so excited. I did the same thing the next day and the day after and then signed up for an 8K about six weeks later.” During the summer, Sharon’s hubby, Chris, a former high school runner, had begun pounding the pavement again and Sharon soon followed with her own walk and run routine. “Our group just started to jog together and support each other,” said Butler. “Someone suggested entering a 5K so we did the Sister Run 5K for Ovarian Cancer. great time that we started scouting for more.” Soon Chris Waterman and Janet and Chris Bainbridge were joining them on the roads as well as Mila teacher Liz Velez and Denise Canina, a guidance
counselor at the school. “Denise had been a runner for a lot of years,” Butler said. “She became our personal coach, friend, mentor and life coach.” As the group grew and continued racing together, someone suggested they race as a team in the Running Zone Foundation Race Series. “Chris Waterman came up with the name Jackson’s Jetts and Joggers,” said Butler. “The team was named after (now 7-year-old) Jackson Bainbridge, Janet and Chris’s son. Every time Chris (Waterman) or the team places and gets hardware we give it to Jackson because it is all about us; it is all for us.” The team continues to grow as friends of friends are welcomed regardless of how fast or slow they travel toward the finish line. “The competition is within ourselves,” said Butler. “We support each other’s goals. I know that with my teammates encouraging and pushing me, I might just make it.” That same support now transcends the athletic goals. “We enjoy our fellowship and support each other through life’s good and bad,” Butler said. “We also get together a few times a year at someone’s home. Usually it’s potluck. We spent New Year’s Day together just laughing and talking together.” “We’re like a family. Camp Blast Off! by Patti Sponsler
Remember those New Year’s resolutions? If this was the year you were going to run or walk your first or fastest halfmarathon, Running Zone Foundation and Health First Health Plans have your back. The 2012 Space Coast Half-Marathon Training Camp will kick off on August 12 and runs – no pun intended – right up through race day on November 25. This year’s camp will offer three different programs including n Walk/Run for beginning athletes. Short jogs will be taken between longer periods of walking. n Run/Walk for newer athletes and those who may not have raced or gone further than 5K. In this program walk breaks will be taken between longer periods of running. n Run Faster for those who have some racing experience and those who want to run a personal best half-marathon. “The neat thing about this is that someone can move up and down,” said Michele Birdwell, a neuromuscular therapist and one of the camp’s four certified coaches. “After just a few weeks last year, everyone from the Run/Walk group had moved up as did most in the Run/Walk. Conversely, if someone gets injured, there is another option that will let them con-

tinue moving forward and stay involved.” The camp meets twice a week; once at Running Zone on Thursday evenings and then again on Sunday mornings at the athlete’s choice of Cocoa Village or Oars and Paddles Park in Indian Harbour Beach. Each athlete will also receive a personalized workout schedule based on his or her individual fitness and goals as well as on-line and in-camp training tips. “Besides the face-to-face time with your coaches, one of the most important elements about the group workouts is the camaraderie and friendships you build with the other athletes,” said head coach Bernie Sher, who has overseen the half and full training workouts since the camp’s debut in 2003. “Everyone is working to be their best for that specific race and end up encouraging and supporting each other. We have had campers who developed deep friendships and/or training partnerships that are still going strong.” In addition to the workouts, campers will be treated to various workshops including how to train with a heart rate monitor
(not mandatory); sound nutrition principals; the mental aspects of training and racing; injury prevention and stretching. There is a nominal fee for this fifteen week camp - $75 for Health First Health Plan members; $100 for returning campers and $125 for new campers. The coaches will be holding three informational meetings where you can learn more about the program, meet the coaches, pick up camp materials and receive answers to all your questions. Join them at 6:30 p.m. at any of the following: n Monday, August 6: Melbourne Pro Health & Fitness Healthplex n Tuesday, August 7: Merritt Island Pro Health & Fitness Healthplex n Wednesday, August 8: Viera Pro Health & Fitness Healthplex There is also more information in this newsletter and on-line at http://www.runningzone.com/training#2373 Complete information about and registration for the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon is available at http://www.spacecoastmarathon.com/
