As many of you know, the Space Coast Marathon is the oldest marathon in the state of Florida. This year is the 42nd running of the race. Since the “space” theme was introduced in 2007, we have held a contest for the best water stations on the course. All of the water stations are given “space” costumes and they had to add their own “flair for the competition. We had two competitions, one on the north end of the course (north of 520) and another on the south end of the course (south of 520). Each water station competed against 6 other stations. The winning water station was awarded $1,000 to the first place, $500 to 2nd place with a total donation of $3,000. In addition to the aid stations, there was also a designated beneficiary each year. This year we are eliminating the competition and a designated beneficiary. Now each of the aid stations will be a designated beneficiary for this year’s event. We have always felt that the water stations have a major positive impact on the participants’ experience. We feel that having each organization hosting a water station a designated beneficiary will add to their excitement and enthusiasm on race day. Over the past several months, we have been accepting requests from numerous local organizations that may be interested in hosting a water station. There were so many wonderful organizations that applied it made for a very difficult selection

process. The Running Zone Foundation Committee met a few weeks ago and made the decision for this year’s beneficiaries.

We are very excited to announce this year’s water station lineup. n Space Coast Crew n Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training n The M.O.R.G.A.N. Project n Cocoa and Brevard Future Educators Association n Brevard Virtual School n Coastal Boxer Rescue n The Scott Center for Autism Treatment n Space Coast Parrot Heads n Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy Cross Country n J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation n Law Enforcement Surfing Association (Drug awareness programs)

We are extremely excited to have the support of so many wonderful organizations in our local community. We know this year’s water stations will be a “blast” for our participants. Sincerely,

Eight was the Number of the Day by Mark DeCotis

Eight was the number of the day at the ninth annual I Run for Pizza Football Kickoff 5K at the Avenue at Viera on Aug. 10. Eight hundred and 48 runners took times in oppressive 80-degree heat and 87 percent humidity with Viera’s Jon Campbell scoring the overall victory in 15 minutes and 48 seconds and West Melbourne’s Kaitlin Donner claiming the women’s overall title in 17:28. The victory was the second for Donner in the second of the seven-event Running Zone Race Series while Campbell won in his series debut. Campbell, 19, a rising sophomore majoring in finance at Florida State, edged series-opener Firecracker 5K winner Peter Cluesner, 36, of Melbourne, who finished in 15:54. Donner, 24, a professional triathlete and University of Florida doctoral student was 15th overall, beating second-place female overall finisher Beth Mihlebech, 27, who was 20th overall in 18:04. Shane Streufert, 41, of Viera, captured the Male Masters victory in 17:45 while Amy Ertel, 46, of Orlando was the female masters winner in 19:13. For Campbell, the victory a defense of his home turf having graduated from nearby Viera High and living only a few blocks away. “I PR’d by about 30 seconds,” he said. “They didn’t go out very fast so I had a lot of energy coming back in” on the out and back course. “I wanted to go below 16, I’m pretty relieved.” Campbell trains at 35 to 40 miles a week with the goal of being able to run at FSU and credits consistency with the progression in his times. “I won’t say more miles but it’s not really for me,” he said. “I would say consistency. Keep hitting it, keep hitting it. Quality over quantity.” As for his greatest influences he watches and learns and keeps the counsel of his father Yogin, a Harris employee. The advice father passes to son: “I would say be controlled in his racing strategy,” the elder Campbell said. “He’s always had good foot speed. I high school I don’t believe he had very good strategy at all. He would just run very fast.

Eau Gallie Civic Center at 6:30pm

Campbell Win.

“Perhaps the second-best advice is (running) it’s hugely a mental game. I believe it’s taken him a while to understand that. It’s not truly physical. I kept telling him ‘you’ve got to get into fog and you’ve got to get out of the fog.’ I’m seeing he’s learning that. The ability to kind of control it in your mind.” For Donner, the race was a break from an increase in the volume of her training as she continues toward her goal of a berth on the 2016 U.S. Olympic team. With her next triathlon not until October in Cozumel any variety is welcome. “Any race is fantastic,” she said. “Even if it is a 5K that takes 17 minutes to do. It’s something to look forward to, something to have in your mind to train for. “It’s great. Especially in this area. Running Zone always puts on a great race. There’s great people out here. I’m glad I got to do some of the race series. Finally.” And while she would have liked to have gone under 17 minutes – which she did in taking the Firecracker 5K women’s title in 16:57 - a win is a win. “Now that I’ve gone under 17 I always want to go under 17,” she said. “But with the humidity and coming off a little tougher training, I’m happy with it.” The efforts of Clusener, Donner, Steve Hedgespeth, Ron Abel and Mihlebach gave Team Running Zone the team title over the Long Doggers team of Campbell, Ben Fish, Michael Fisher, Streufert and Diana Viselli. Twenty-one teams competed.

Moolenaar, 72, World Duathlon Champion by Mark DecCotis Willy Moolenar, 72, of Indialantic can rightfully call herself a world champion. Moolenar, a veteran runner and multisport athlete, finished first in the sprintdistance female 70-74 age group at the Aug. 10 ITU World Duathlon Championships in Ottawa, Canada. Moolenar covered the 5K run, 20K bike, 2.5K run course in 1 hour, 40:35 seconds. Her splits were 30:48 for the first run, 50:50 for the bike and 16:57 for the second run. “I was the only one in my age group, I would have liked some competition, so I made my own,” Moolenar said. “I competed against the 65-69 age group. Based on my finish time I would have placed second in that age group. Willy Moolenaar is now a world champion duathlete for her age group. “Being the only one in my group . . . I still did worry. What if I got a flat tire or the chain broke? None of that happened but half But the real gift came later. of that day was crossing the finish line and a mile from the transition my aerobars flew “Winning was thrilling,” Moolenar said. receiving my medal as part of the great Team of the bike, I did not stop and kept going. “When I stepped on the podium and heard USA.” Someone picked them up and knew my race the words ‘World Champion’ and the medal More than 1,000 athletes from 24 counnumber as I found the bars at my bike in the transition after the race.” was put around my neck. Spreading the gospel of runner safety by Mark DecCotis

Todd Williams has a solid foundation when it comes to spreading the gospel of runner safety. No, he doesn’t mean reflective hats and shoes and belts. The two-time U.S. Olympian in track (1992 and 1996) and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Williams speaks to selfdefense for runners.

Working closely with Brooke, Williams broke down self-defense and what he termed self-offense moves designed to give the runner, jogger or walker the critical seconds crucial to escaping an attacker. But even before those moves come into play, there is a whole other level of safety. “The first thing is is to be prepared,”

There was stuff for safety but not a true self-defense form that could be offered to the runner, jogger of walker. – Todd Williams “I got the opportunity to be a sales rep for two years,” said Williams, a resident of Jacksonville, FL. “Whenever I’d go around . . . the United States . . . I’d notice there that was reflective gear, there was mace, there was stuff for safety but not a true self-defense form that could be offered to the runner, jogger of walker.” Combine that with the fact that Williams is the father to daughters Brooke, 16, and Bailee, 13 and a new passion was ignited. Williams brought his program to the Running Zone on Aug. 15 and despite a thunderstorm that dampened the evening had the attention of a small but enthusiastic audience.

Williams said. “If I can really break down my program 99.9 percent of it should be safety awareness: not becoming complacent, not running by yourself when you shouldn’t, not doing things over and over and over because repetition creates a strategic pattern that an attacker could target that individual. “(Also) not having your iPod turned up to 100 because you want to finish your run stronger and not being aware of who’s jumping out of the woods.” In short: practicing common sense. “It’s not rocket science,” Williams said. “Now if the encounter does take place, that’s where your practical application of technique comes into play. “What I am looking to do in this program is: do I want them to continue their education through self-defense? Hands down yes. But what I also want them to do is get seconds tonight. If I can give you 30 seconds tonight, that’s 30 more seconds that you didn’t have.” To that end Williams has presented his

program – based on Jiu Jitsu - to more than 500 people around the country in the last 5 ½ months and has plans to expand it. “It’s a sad world we live in but it’s the reality,” said Williams who has programmed his iPhone to send an alert each time there is news of an assault upon a runner. “There’ a lot of creeps.” To learn more about the program visit www.runsafer.com

Why I Run: Cathy Friedel by Mark DecCotis

Cathy Friedel, 49, is a Satellite Beach resident, Senior Financial Analyst for SAIC, a wife and a mother of five. She also is an accomplished runner and multi-sport athlete who took from her busy schedule to share her thoughts on running in our new monthly feature: Why I Run. Before the questions can you tell me a little about yourself: Occupation, family, education? I’m married to Dan, and have five kids: Ryan – 24, graduated from Clemson, Magna Cum Laude in Accounting; Zach – 20, is in Air Force ROTC at Clemson, studying Electrical Engineering (with a 4.0 GPA), Rachael – 17, who will attend UCF this fall to pursue being a P.A; Brenna – 16, is a junior at Satellite High and plays soccer; and Sydney – 12, who started seventh grade at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy and runs cross country. I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Virginia Tech. I telecommute (clients are in Maryland), so get to work from home. 1. Why do you run?

I run for peace of mind, to achieve goals, to push myself, and test my inner strength. I like to set goals and work hard even when it’s challeng-

ing. I never train without a goal in mind. I’m more of a triathlete than solely a runner, and I’m training for the Augusta 70.3 (Half-Ironman) that is at the end of September. Then I’ll take a break from triathlons and do the Space Coast Half-Marathon after Thanksgiving. 2. When do you run and why?

I like to run in the mornings because I’m a morning person, and that’s when I can usually fit it in my schedule the best. But, I also like to fit in some evening runs to be able to run with others. 3. Where do you run and why?

My favorite place is an old neighborhood near my house where the houses are gone but the streets are still paved so it’s wide open for a quick 3-to-4-mile run or tempo training. I also like Wickham Park where Coach Doug Butler’s running camp meets and Holy Trinity crosscountry team trains. The trails are great and the road is mostly traffic free. South Tropical Trail is good for a long run since it’s not too far away from home. 4. With whom do you run?

I’ll run with anyone who will let me join them. But, I run a lot by myself just because of my schedule with work and kids. After a weekend bike ride, I run with my friend, Megan, since we live so close to each other and train for triathlons together. I’ll run with my husband sometimes, and I used to run with Sydney before she

Cathy Friedel runs and competes for a variety of reasons, mainly for peace of mind.

started training with Holy Trinity this summer. I do some trail running with a group of Holy Trinity cross country parents to mix things up and get off the pavement. Also, I’m part of Doug Butler’s Set Goals Not Limits camp and I try to make two evening tempo and speed workouts a week with a core group of runners who are about my pace and faster, so it’s a good workout for me to try and stay with them. I’ll meet them on some Wednesday nights to run the U.S. 192 bridge as well. Doug’s really good about coaching via email and I can run workouts on my own if I can’t make it to camp in the evenings. 5. Worst running experience you learned the most from?

The New York Marathon in 2007. I got sick before it, was sick during the race, but went out too fast at my goal pace at which I had been training. It was miserable at the end. I finished in a Boston Qualifying time, but was so completely worn out that I couldn’t move afterwards. My husband finally found me sitting on a bench in Central Park and got a pedi taxi to take us back to the hotel. I learned not to race when sick (or injured), and to listen to my body. It’s not worth it to race no matter what when your conditions aren’t favorable. There’s always another race coming up to try to get things right.

Popular triathlon celebrates 9 years, adds perks By Mark DeCotis

In her ninth year of race director for the Battle of the Bridges Olympic- and sprintdistance triathlons Christine Lighthill never ceases to be impressed by the enthusiasm the Brevard County community shows for the event. “I am so blessed,” Lighthill said. “There are no better people to be with than the great athletic and volunteer community here in Brevard County.” The race, in its 11th year, is set for 7:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 at Pineapple Park and the Eau Gallie Library in Melbourne. A 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run make up the Olympic-distance race while the sprint distance race is comprised of a .25-mile swim, 15-mile bike and 3.1-mile run. The swim course is in the Indian River Lagoon behind the library, the bike course heads out into North Melbourne, to south Merritt Island via the Pineda Causeway and Indian Harbour Beach before returning to the library. The run course winds though downtown Eau Gallie and out and back over the Eau Gallie Causeway. Hence, the Battle of the Bridges.

The race field, always a mix of veterans and newcomers, is limited to 600, 300 each for the Olympic and sprint events. “The event course is an easy sale, it is beautiful, challenging, and packed with enthusiastic volunteers and spectators cheering you to the finish,” said Lighthill, who is physician liaison for Viera Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center, Inc. “We have added a few new things for 2013, a great post race party at with food and beverages at Squid Lips, some great athlete swag, and some raffle items to be given away at the awards ceremony.” But all that would not be possible without the help of many people who contribute year-around. “I have the best team a race director could ask for: Kevin Leiker and Phil Moore for the venue, Kristin Cusimano for swim course coordination, Ginger and Jim Twigg of Revolutions for the Bike Course, Denise and Don Piercy of Running Zone for the run course, Suzanne Coullias for volunteer coordination, Karla Torpy and Barbara Heisel, transition coordination, and Cathi Rogers, my right hand,” Lighthill said. That being said, the need always exists for volunteers and this year is no different. As for the races themselves, they appear to be wide open as far as potential winners are concerned which is not unusual for the event that brings down the curtain on the Space

Fluids and the Runner by Richard C. Wilson, DPM, Melbourne Podiatry Associates

Running in the Florida summer heat can be, in a word, dangerous. The body’s primary method of cooling itself during exercise is sweating, and excessive sweating can result in dehydration. Thus, it is very important for the runner to understand fluid replacement, as well as replacement of electrolytes and carbohydrates. Like it or not, you are 50 percent water. Water is the most essential component of the human body and is involved in numerous physiologic functions. These include nutrient transportation, waste elimination, thermoregulation, maintenance of blood circulation and pressure, and lubrication of joints and other tissues. Proper hydration (water intake) is important for maintenance of vital bodily functions as well as proper athletic performance. Closely related to hydration is electrolyte balance and carbohydrate availability. The word “electrolyte” is a chemical term meaning a compound that ionizes (breaks apart) when dissolved in a solvent such as water. The most important electrolytes in human physiology are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride. The balance of these electrolytes within our cells (intracellular) and outside of our cells (extracellular) is a complex process that affects many body functions. Like water, electrolytes are lost during sweating. Carbohydrates are the body’s energy source. Carbohydrate consumption during exercise is important during high-intensity exercise lasting more than one hour and in lowerintensity exercise lasting for longer periods. With the great number of sports drinks, carbohydrate gels, and energy bars available, making choices becomes confusing. Some guidelines will help simplify the decision. First of all, consider water replacement. How much should you drink before, during, and after exercise? The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that a runner drink 16 - 20 fluid ounces of water four hours before exercise, than 8 – 12 fluid ounces 10-15 minutes before exercise. Drink 3-8 fluid ounces of water every 15-20 minutes when exercising less than one hour. If exercising more than one hour, drink 3-8 fluid ounces of a sports beverage. This sports beverage should contain 20-30 meq/L sodium, 2-5 meq/L potassium, and 5-8 percent carbohydrates. Never drink more than 1 quart per hour during exercise. It also is important to rehydrate after

Water is an essential ingredient for the success of any athlete especially in Florida.

exercise. The goal is to correct fluid loss within two hours after exercise. There are two methods for determining fluid loss. One way is to weigh yourself before and after exercise. Any weight loss is fluid loss. Loss of more than 1 percent of body weight indicates dehydration, and loss of more than 5 percent indicates severe dehydration. Drink 20-24 fluid ounces of water or sports beverage for every pound of water lost. Another method to check hydration status is the urine color test. A large amount of light-colored urine indicates that you are well-hydrated. Darker colored urine indicates dehydration. Drink fluids until a large amount of light-colored urine is produced. Carbohydrate replacement is important in exercise lasting more than one hour. In fact, it can improve endurance by more than 20 percent in workouts lasting more than 90 minutes. Sports drinks with carbohydrate will provide sufficient amounts for most activities. However, some runners also utilize carbohydrate gels and energy bars, both excellent sources of carbohydrates. Most carbohydrate gel packs contain 100 calories and 25 grams of carbohydrate. The runner should consume two to three packs for every hour of exercise along with plenty of water. Energy bars often contain protein and fat, neither of which is needed during running. Choose one with 25-40 grams of carbohydrate, less than 15 grams of protein, and little or no fat. Eat one bar one hour before exercise and one bar per hour of exercise along

with plenty of water. Energy bars are rated according to the glycemic index, which is a measure of how rapidly carbohydrates are absorbed into the circulation. Bars with low glycemic index are best used before exercise, as they provide sustained energy due to slower release of carbohydrates into the circulation. Those with a high glycemic index release carbohydrates rapidly into the circulation, and are useful during exercise. It is important to realize that the thirst mechanism is not effective in helping the runner determine fluid needs. Dehydration can occur before one experiences thirst, and thirst can be satisfied without complete rehydration. Increase in thirst following dehydration decreases with aging, starting as soon as age 50. This puts the older runner at much greater risk for dehydration. Older women are at greater risk than older men. The importance of proper hydration has been well recognized by the medical community. In fact, the European Food Safety Authority in 2009 actually included water as a vital nutrient and assigned a minimum daily requirement of 2 liters for females and 2.5 liters for males. Realize that this is a minimum for a sedentary adult. An athlete will obviously require more. Proper replacement of water, electrolytes, and carbohydrates will keep the runner safe and competitive, even in our warm and humid climate.
