Both finish times and temperatures sizzled at the July 4 Firecracker 5K in Melbourne. Melbourne’s James Post, a rising junior who runs for the University of North Florida, smashed the course record by 12 seconds as he crossed the finish line - hands raised - in sixteen minutes and seven seconds.
He then had to wait 30 seconds before he could congratulate former course record holder, Chris Rego, on his second place finish of 16:37. “Chris went out fast,” said Post. “I kept him in sight and then reeled him in and ran behind him until the continues on page 4

Master’s records also fall: Melbourne’s Doug Butler breaks the previous Masters (40+) record of 17:31 set by Steve Chin in 2009.

2-mile mark. That’s when I decided to go for it.” Post, who hit the first mile in 5:18 and then dropped his 5K average to 5:12, was amazed that he had set a
course record with his win. “I was there to have fun and keep in shape,” said the 6’2” Post, who competes in the 8K and 10K during cross-country season to keep his fitness honed for track. “I’m not really a 5K guy. I’m more into the 800 to 1500 meters on the track. Melbourne’s Doug Butler finished sixth overall, grabbing a new male Masters (40+) course record as he flew across the line in 17:16. The popular 48-year-old Holy Trinity and Set Goals, Not Limits coach bettered Steve Chin’s 2009 record of 17:31 by 15 seconds. Palm Bay’s Jackie Clifton, 49, broke her own female Masters course record of 20:14 that she set in 2010. Clifton, who is training for the Triathlon Long Course World Championships on Nov. 5, proved that her training is on track as she dropped her 2011 Firecracker 5K time to 19:57. Overall women’s winner, Satellite Beaches Jessica Crate, fell just three seconds short of tying her 2010 course record as she shot across the line in 17:45, finishing 10th OA. Her time was amazing when you
consider the elite runner turned budding triathlete cycled a total of 127 miles over the two days prior to the race. The race - which registered a record crowd of 844 athletes - was the first in the seven-race Running Zone Foundation Race Series. Up for grabs this year is a whopping record prize purse worth $10,000 for top Series finishers as well as special random give-a-ways at each of the events. Congratulations to Indialantic’s Elaine Dalrymple, who was the happy recipient of the Firecracker’s give-away of an Apple Ipad. Special congratulations also to Viera’s Bruce Klima, the top finisher in the Military division. We deeply appreciate all who are serving/have served in our military and participated in the race division dedicated especially to them. The proceeds from this event will be donated to Honor America and Sentinels of Freedom Space Coast. Thank you to all of the incredible athletes, tireless volunteers and generous sponsors including Morning Star Cafe who provided a yummy breakfast for all! Up next in the Series is the I Run for Pizza Football Kickoff 5K on Aug. 13 at 7:15 a.m. at The Avenues in Viera based from the Pizza Gallery and Grill courtyard. CHASING ANNE DOCKERY
Who says (age) 55 has to be the speed limit? By Patti Sponsler
Think you’re too old to start running? Think again. Meet Anne Dockery, a delightfully British 63-year-old retired high school teacher who didn’t begin to run until after she turned 55. Anne lives in Melbourne Beach with her husband, Mike, and their talkative nine-year-old yellow-collared Macaw, Ollie. Dockery’s gentle, lilting accent and humble demeanor belie the speed and warrior competitiveness that her fit body houses. Her finish times and places, however, tell a different story. Not only does she usually clean the clocks of those in the 60-64 age group, but she also has won multiple Grand-Master victories meaning she also dusted all women in the race ages 50 and above.

CHASING ANNE DOCKERY continued from page 6
BEGAN RUNNING
Before departing the UK for Poughkeepsie, NY in 2004, I was misdiagnosed with a lung disease. To strengthen my lungs, my newlyacquired husband, Mike, suggested I take up running and unilaterally entered me in a hill-ridden cross-country race. And so on Nov. 4, 2004, I labored through my first 5k, finishing in 28:40 - and, oddly enough, finding the ordeal enjoyable. Anne and her husband, Mike, enjoy a great view of the ocean from their Melbourne Beach home.
well as the top age-graded female award in the Space Coast Runners’ Runner of the Year Series. Below we share, in her own words, a glimpse of her running life. We hope that you will be encouraged and inspired!
UNUSUAL NICKNAME
My Poughkeepsie TNT coach who trained runners at a local prison dubbed me ‘the inmate’ because I showed up in baggy trousers, a faded sweatshirt and Mike’s knitted black wool cap, reminiscent of prison attire. A far cry from my fashionable RZ outfit!
RUNNING DEVELOPMENT
In 2005, after some solo running, I was invited to join the Poughkeepsie TNT runners who introduced me to the delights of running the Hudson Valley hills and the fun of training while chatting with friends. My first race in Melbourne was the 2006 Run for the Light 10k at Windover Farms (49:16), after which I joined SCR. Around that time a few experienced runners told me that I was fairly fast for my age and had the potential to go faster. When my husband, Mike, challenged me to run a 7:30 mile, I put markers along A1A and eventually managed a 7:08. Sometimes you just need a push in the right direction to encourage you to explore your capabilities. Getting to know Sue Strout (Strout is five years Dockery’s junior) was great for my running. For two years we were fierce but friendly competitors. I’d beat her by two seconds and she would beat me by four.
She was getting the better of me when she was sidelined by an injury.
IDEAL TRAINING WEEK
Running three times each week with one speed work session either locally or at Hoover; a tempo run (the most arduous workout), and a long run ranging from six to 10 miles Cross training includes road cycling or spinning class, weight training and Pilates classes - great for the core and that end-of-race kick - and tennis once or twice a week.
DEVELOPING MENTAL TOUGHNESS
Training the mind is vitally important in getting better results. As the physical effort and intensity increase, I try to learn to accommodate discomfort - perhaps even welcome it. When training or racing I focus on keeping pernicious negative thoughtswhat the poet William Blake called “the mind-forged manacles”-at bay. There are limitations enough without entertaining self-imposed bogeymen. So when the hounds of negativity begin to bark inside my head, it’s back to the kennel for them.
RECENT INJURY
I was training for the halfmarathon (2011 USATF Masters Half-Marathon Championship) and whether I trained too hard, I don’t know. The week before the race I ran over the bridge to loosen up and felt a gripping tightness in the back of my leg. I ended up walking. I ran the half-marathon (1:42:21, third 60-64) and then laid off. The physiotherapist diagnosed a pulled hamstring. I’m now running again but speedwork is still difficult.
BEING PART OF THE RUNNING ZONE RACE TEAM
I enjoy being part of the RZ team

CHASING ANNE DOCKERY continued from page 8
- especially when some one hollers out ‘come on, Anne’. That type of generous encouragement makes me grit my teeth and push harder. To be associated with such an impressive group of athletes and friends is a pleasure and a privilege.
MOST MEMORABLE RACES
I have always enjoyed the Downtown Melbourne 5k in which men and women run separate races and so have the opportunity to support each other. The high-energy atmosphere helped me last year to run a 5k PR of 21:14. (She won the 60-64 division by almost six minutes and was 7th female overall out of 263 women in the race.) And of course the zoo races (The Running Zone Foundation Race Series annual 3K event at the Brevard Zoo. ) and the Space Coast half-marathon are always great fun. My fourth race (ever) was a half-marathon in Poughkeepsie which I entered at the very last minute. I started off slowly, chatting and enjoying the fall foliage. I gradually picked up my pace and finished in 2:04. I
was thrilled to get second place in the 50-59 age group.
ON TAKING TWO 2010 OVERALL FEMALE WINS
Lucky! I just happened to run well on those days when speedsters like Jessica(Crate) weren’t competing. These local events were particularly gratifying, especially the Coconut 5k which raised money for our library, Melbourne Beach’s little treasure trove for bibliophiles.
CURRENT GOALS
Break 20 minutes in the 5K this season or, more realistically, beat my 21:14 PB. While I was injured, Mike began teaching me how to swim freestyle. I’d like to attempt a sprint triathlon sometime next year.
ADVICE TO OTHER AARP-ELIGIBLE ATHLETES JUST STARTING OUT
For openers ‘don’t take running too seriously.’ Relax and have fun. Go out and enjoy running with other people. Making a commitment to meet a chum a for a run and a chat
Come join Running Zone for their FREE Thursday night fun run/walk! Athletes of all abilities leave the store at 6 p.m. to walk or run approximately three miles - most of it through beautiful and shady Wickham Park. Make sure to stick around on the last Thursday of each month for FREE pizza and fun give-a-ways!
will get you out the door when you least feel like training. People say ‘ oh I couldn’t do what you do’, yet when I first started, I’d run a half mile and be exhausted. It takes time to build up your fitness, but it is well worth the effort and dedication. Improvement may come in fits and starts but as long as you persevere it will come. I was told that after you start running, you have just ten years in which to improve. A valid axiom or one more mental shackle? Time will tell. Set an an achievable goal and enjoy the challenge. During your first races it’s great to have an experienced runner by your side, offering guidance and encouragement. I was lucky enough to have the sage advice of Tom Ward (another Running Zone race team member from Melbourne Beach) who would calm me down at the start and give me tips such as ‘slow down, you’re going out too fast’. So lace ‘em up, come join us, and together we might just show the young whippersnappers a thing or two!

Who doesn’t like pizza?
They’ll be plenty of the tastytopped crusty goodness at the post-race tailgate party following the I Run for Pizza Football Kickoff 5K on Saturday, August 13 at The Avenue in Viera. “The pizza never stops coming,” said race director, Denise Piercy. “It’s cool because the race is staged from the beautiful courtyard behind the Pizza Gallery and Grill. Chris (Conneen, Pizza Gallery owner) is right there and he keeps bringing out all different kinds. He makes so many pizzas that day.” But there’s more to this race than the delectable pies! The 3.1-mile out-and-back course is one of the county’s quickest. Staged on wide, open roads with plenty of traffic control, the flat, fast route has helped many athletes score an early season personal best. Check out the course map at www.runningzone.com/ calendar/docs/Course%20Map%20 2010.pdf In addition to the shouts of family and friends, participants will also be sent off and welcomed by the rousing cheers of the Suntree/Viera youth football and cheerleading league. The chase for this year’s top spot is wide open as two-time winner and course record holder, David Kilgore, has left Brevard to begin his collegiate running career with the University of Colorado in Boulder. There’s more at stake this year, too. The 5K is race number two in the seven-race Running Zone Foundation Race Series. The points earned at the finish line will help determine who will

earn a piece of the $10,000 prize purse – the largest ever in a Brevard roadracing series – at the end of the season. All participants will receive an awesome moisture-wicking race shirt; the festive post-race tailgate party and a chance to win great door prizes including two NFL football tickets to any Florida team game plus one hotel night stay for two! Everyone is invited to fly the colors of their favorite football team and there will be a special award for the most supported team! And all participants, volunteers and sponsors can feel good knowing that proceeds from this race will benefit WEGO Ministries, the Suntree/Viera youth football and cheerleading league and the Johnson family of Palm Bay. “Someone asked us to put on a 5K benefit for the Johnsons,” said Piercy. “We asked the Foundation if we could take a portion of the proceeds for them at this race. We didn’t want to take away from the beneficiaries we had committed to so we are doing extra on top of that.” The 5K will kick off at 7:15 a.m. followed by the free kids’ run led by
David and Susannah Johnson, together with their four children, were involved in a horrific traffic accident while on vacation in north Georgia. Susannah, 32 and 20 weeks pregnant, broke close to a dozen ribs and eight-year-old Kathryn, will be wheelchair-bound for the next few months with two broken legs and a crushed pelvis. While David and oldest daughter, Brook, were relatively unscathed, six-year-old Hannah was killed and 3-year-old Owen became paralyzed from the neck down as his spine was severed by the impact of the pickup truck slamming into the family’s van. Learn more about this tragedy and the way that our community is helping this family at Hannah’s Helpers on Facebook.

Coach Doug Butler, MS —Sports Psychology
This is a training program geared for the beginner to the elite runner. Runners meet two nights a week and on Sunday mornings for training runs.
This camp is geared for adults; students are welcome to join if they are not a member of a high school cross country team.
Very few people train at the paces they should be running at in order to increase their fitness level. This camp will teach you what paces you should be training at. Nobody likes to train alone, and this gives you a chance to meet some great people to run with.
Coach Doug Butler will individually assess each runner and based on individual goals, set each runner up with a customized training program. He will base your training regimen on your particular level of fitness and advise you how to move forward to achieve your goals while staying injury free.
Includes personal training for those wanting to run a fall or winter marathon or half marathon!
