I was riding to work a couple of weeks ago and saw a group of ladies running down the Eau Gallie Causeway. The lady out in front was a full figured lady but I could tell right away (from 100 yards away) that she wasn’t wearing a sports bra or the sports bra she may have been wearing definitely wasn’t the right size or fit. She was bouncing up and down with each stride that her breasts were almost hitting her chin. I wanted to pull over but resisted the temptation which leads me to the Den for this month. Approximately 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. Here are a couple of questions to ask yourself to see if you are in the proper bra. n Do your shoulders and neck hurt after a workout? n Are your breasts staying put with each stride? n Do your straps dig into your neck, shoulders or chest? Wearing the correct bra can make such a difference in the comfort of your workout. A couple of other interesting facts about bras:

n Your bra should never see its birthday – replace your bra at least once a year n A woman should be re-measured at least annually. Other reasons to be re-measured in-

clude weight loss, weight gain and pregnancy. n Not all bras are the same!

A Little About Our Fitting Process

We start with questions about your exercise activities. We will take careful measurements and then based on your size and activity, we will recommend the correct sizing for your sports bra.

How do you know you have the right sports bra?

It should feel comfortable with little movement and not chafe. The straps should not dig into your skin anywhere the bra touches your skin and the bra should feel supportive but not restrictive. A good sports bra will wick the moisture away from your skin, be breathable and dry quickly. We have a large selection of bras at Running Zone and can help you find the proper bra with the correct fit. What do you have to lose other than the bounce? It WILL make such a difference. (almost as much as a great pair of shoes!)

As new walkers and runners continue to join our burgeoning fitness community, we continue to field questions about the Running Zone Foundation Race Series. Below we’ve compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions:

What is the Running Zone Foundation Race Series?

The Running Zone Foundation was established with the purpose of promoting exercise and fitness in our community. The annual Series is a large part of how we meet that goal. The 2011-12 Series offers seven family-friendly events with race distances ranging from 3K (1.8) miles to 5K

(3.1 miles). We offer these shorter distances to promote participation among runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. Each race also offers free kid’s runs for the tinier tots and free babysitting. Each event is festive and fun! Generous sponsorship also allows us to reward the competitive participants as well. Each individual race offers awards and there is a $10,000 prize purse for the Series speediest to share at the end of the season. (Read further for detailed information.) One cool thing you may not know is that the proceeds from each Series event are donated back to the com-

Heading Home By Patti Sponsler

With only three events left in the 2011- 2012 Running Zone Foundation Race Series, competitors vying for a piece of the $10,000 prize purse are picking up their game and taking a more strategic look at the points totals of their rivals. With four races down, the current Series standings can be misleading to some if they don’t understand the rules. To be eligible for season-end awards, participants must have completed a minimum of four races. Points will be totaled for up to six races and those who finish all seven of the Series events will be able to

drop their lowest score. And this is where the strategy and suspense come into play. With Series awards going three deep in the age groups this year, it is important to keep in mind the number of races and the points accumulated by the people above you and below you. Below we take a look at how the points have played out after the first four events. Due to the large number of Series participants, we’ve limited the division names to the top ten. To see all athlete points, log on to http://www.runningzone.

Dr. Tina Kraver and Mary Hofmeister are tied for first place in the women’s 40-44 age group with 37 points each. Both have beat each other twice. With three races left, anything can happen.

Palm Bay’s Kim Blake received an early birthday present after finishing the I Run for Pizza Football Kickoff 5K in Viera on August 13. The 47-year-old purchasing sub-contractor for 3D Supply at Northrop Grumman was the lucky winner of the random giveaway that included two NFL tickets to any Florida team game plus one hotel night stay for two. Her decision on which game to see was an easy one. With her birthday approaching on Dec. 30 and the Jaguars playing the Colts on New Year’s Day, the Jacksonville destination seemed perfect for the loyal football aficionado and her boyfriend, Albert. “We made a long weekend out of it,” said the Peyton Manning fan that was able to get her hero’s autograph before the game. “We then stayed the night and went to the Gator Bowl the next day to watch the Gators play the Buckeyes. It was a great way to end the old year and ring in the new.” While Kim was excited to have won the opportunity to enjoy the game, her fondest memory of the I Run for Pizza 5K had more to do with her then new commitment to fitness. “The main accomplishment was finishing my first 5K,” she said proudly.

“I’ve done a few more since then.” Maybe luck will strike twice as the Brevard Zoo’s Rapture Run 3K on March 3 will be offering a random giveaway that includes two one-day tickets to Walt Disney World and one hotel night’s stay for two. Good luck!

Running Zone Foundation thanks the athletes, volunteers and sponsors who made the 2011 Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon such a record success! Because of your hard efforts and generosity, we were able to donate race proceeds of $10,000 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training and an additional $5,000 to other multiple charities and non-profit organizations in our community.

Do I have to be a member of the Gecko Club or other club to compete in the Running Zone Foundation Race Series? No, everyone who walks or runs in any of the Series events has the opportunity to earn points. Participants are required to complete a minimum of four of the races to be eligible for a part of the end-of-Series $10,000 prize purse.

I’ve run three races but only received points for two of them. How are points assigned to individuals?

The overall top ten male and female runners/walkers in each race receive between 10 and 100 points – in 10-point increments - based on their finish times. The

At the end of the season, final points standings will be based on the total points

Raptor Rapture by Patti Sponsler

The love affair began with buzzards in 2007; dashed to dinos in 2008; skated to stingrays in 2009; chased the cheetahs in 2010 and rooted the rhinos last year. This year we hope to capture your rapture for raptors at the Brevard Zoo’s Raptor Run 3K on March 3. The event is the fifth race in the seven-race Running Zone Foundation Race Series and race proceeds are returned to the Zoo. From the last two Zoo races alone, the Foundation has donated $13,500 to help keep this amazing community treasure thriving. The 1.8-mile course that winds through Zoo property is perfect for first-time participants and families who may want to take

their time and enjoy the wildlife that roam, float or fly near the race route. Race entry fees include a great technical (non-cotton) race shirt, free Li’l Raptor Kiddie Run with Zippy the Gecko; free on-site childcare by Planet Kid, a delicious breakfast catered by Morning Star Café and 50% off Zoo admission on race day. There will also be a random drawing for a great getaway including one-day Disney tickets for two with a one-night hotel stay. small - promote wellness. It is a great way for employees to get to know one another professionally and socially while becoming physically fit. Team scores are totaled in a manner that encourages both participation and finish place. First, each team member will earn points based on their overall finish. Then those points are subtracted from the number of total finishers in the event. Once the individual scores are calculated, the total team member’s points will be totaled for their team score. The team with the highest score will take top honors. (Aren’t you glad you paid attention in math class?) For example: To make things easy, say a race has only 100 finishers. The score for Team XYZ would be calculated as such: Sally placed 10th 100-10=90 Jim placed 20th 100-20=80 Scott placed 25th 100-25=75 Frank placed 30th 100-30=70

Mary placed 35th 100-35=65 Total team score = 380 points. Knowing that being part of a team provides a great sense of camaraderie and extra motivation, we also encourage others to start their own teams, as well, in either the Open Division (friends, family, clubs, etc.) or the Corporate Team Division (employees only of the same company). All you need is a minimum group of at five people, with at least one person being of the opposite sex. The finish times of the top four of the same sex and the first member of the opposite sex will be added together and the team with the total lowest time will win the top spot. As a way to promote the fun of fitness and to encourage kids 14 and under to get moving, we offer the School Participation Challenge. Awards are given to the elementary and/or middle schools that have the largest participation.

Can I win an individual award if I am competing on a team?
