Trying anything new can be very intimidating. If you have never participated in an organized run here is a breakdown of a few things to be aware of that will hopefully make your 1st event fun and fulfilling and eliminate some of the uncertainties.

Pre-Race

Show Up at the Showdown..... 12

1. Register early. The earlier you register, the better chance you have of receiving the shirt size you requested. If you wait until the last week, chances are pretty good you won’t get the shirt size you want or you may not get a shirt at all. 2. Try and pickup your race packet before race day. Review all of the materials in the race packet. Your race packet includes your race number, your D-tag (timing device), t-shirt, safety pins as well as sponsor materials. 3. Bring a friend along. Running or walking with a friend can be lots of fun. 4. Make sure you have tried the shoes and clothing that you are going to wear at the race on a training run/walk. The rule of thumb is nothing new on race day. Don’t try any new clothing or eat things you haven’t already tried before during a training workout. A good pair of shoes (less than 6 months old and light technical (moisture-wicking) clothing is recommended.

1. Get there approximately 1 hour before the start of the race. This will allow plenty of time for parking and picking up your race packet (if you weren’t able to pickup your packet in advance), a bathroom break and a short warm-up (walk or jog) before the race. 2. Attach your timing device. Running Zone uses the D-tag for timing. The tag is on the back of your race number. Peel it off and follow the instructions on the tag to attach it to your shoe. The key here is to make sure the shape of the tag is in the shape of a “D” (hence D-tag). Don’t flatten the tag under your laces or the tag may not read properly. 3. Line up according to your pace per mile. Typically, the 5-6 minute per mile runners will be up front, the 7-8 minute pace per mile will be next, followed by the 9-11 minute per mile pace with the healthy walkers in the back of the start corral. Remember, most races have a “net” time. A “net” time means your starting time doesn’t start until you cross the start mat. So if you are in the back of the corral, you are not penalized for being towards the

back. Your time doesn’t start until you cross the mat at the front of the corral. 4. Start out conservative. If your normal pace is 10 minutes per mile, try to be at that pace or slower than that pace during the 1st mile. It is very easy to get caught up in the excitement and go out way too fast and you will pay for that mistake during the final stages of the race. Start out slower and finish stronger, especially for your first race. 5. Be sure to hydrate before the race and every 30-45 minutes during the race. Water stations are usually spread out on the course every mile or two.

Post Race

1. Walk or jog a little after you finish and recover from the race. This cool down will help to eliminate some of the possible soreness from the race. 2. Stretch lightly after your cool down. 3. Continue to hydrate during the next several hours. 4. Finally, sign up for another event. Always having a goal event 6-8 weeks out, will help you to keep motivated and continue training for your next race. I hope some of the above tips help to remove any anxieties about signing up for an organized running / walking event. Also, please feel free to email us at HYPERLINK “mailto:info@runningzone. com” info@runningzone.com with any questions you have about our events or about participating in your 1st running / walking event.

With only the Run for the Gecko 5K remaining in the seven-race 201112 Running Zone Foundation Race Series, we wonder if Michael Fisher has invited a guest along on the threeday cruise for two that will soon be his? After all, the 19-year-old Brevard Community College student from West Melbourne bagged so many points in the prior six events that he need not even show up for the last race to take the overall victory. And that’s a good thing as his parents might be planning a family vacation that weekend. But not everyone competing for a piece of the $10,000 purse of prizes and gift certificates can get off so easily. Last year’s Series winner, Peter Clusener, holds onto second place by a mere 20 points. A Gecko no-show or bad day for last year’s Series champ could mean switching places with John Davis, the 2010 Series victor, who currently sits in third. The race is equally tight for the ladies’ top podium spot as well. Although the two-time (2010, 2011) women’s winner, Jessica Crate, currently leads Angela Cobb by 70 points, her lowest race score will be dropped if she does all seven events. Right now Crate’s lowest is 90 points that, if dropped, would put Cobb ahead of her by 20 points. Palm Bay’s Jessica Wiedenbauer looks to be sitting pretty tight in third place. In the age group categories some athletes had also sewn up their award spots in the first six races; others still need to battle it out and a few will just need to get that minimum fourth race to be eligible for an award in their division. The Run for the Gecko will also serve as the tiebreaker in this season’s most hotly contested age group top spot. Malabar’s Mary Hofmeister and

Merritt Island’s Tina Kraver have duked it out in the 40-44 age group since the first Series race kicked off on July 4. Each has beat the other to the finish line in three of the events and are currently tied with 56 points each. In the women’s 65-69 age group, Carole Judson and Judith Law are also tied for first place. Law, however, has only run three races to Judson’s four and a minimum of four race completions are required to be eligible for a Series award. Because the number of Series participants has been so great, we have only published the top three current overall male and female points leaders as well as the top five in each age group. Pirates Plunder Palm Bay by Patti Sponsler

Even the tooth fairy, Greg Richards, was forced to run the plank with (left to right) Mason Overcash, Ryan Rattay, David Grant and Logan Lawhorn.

About 500 scallywags walked the plank, got smacked by plastic swords and crawled under a net of ropes to get to the finish line of the Pirate Plunder 2-miler obstacle course in Palm Bay on April 7. It was West Melbourne’s Michael

Fisher who got there first, taking the victory in ten minutes and 40 seconds. “It was very windy so I wanted to stay back with the pack at first,” said Fisher whose win also cemented his overall victory in the 2011-12 Running Zone Foundation Race Series. “Before the ropes I noticed two of the guys picking it up. I didn’t know how fast they or I could go so I thought I’d better get the lead under the ropes.” While Fisher had four seconds to spare, the tightest race of the day was for second place as two former Running Zone Foundation Race Series champions, Peter Clusener and John Davis, both clocked 10:45 and change. “Pete came out of the ropes with a

pretty big lead, and I hit high gear,” said Davis, a local business owner and father of two. “I was closing on Pete fast, but I ended up losing by .4 of a second.” Viera’s Shane Streufert followed Davis, one of his training partners, by four seconds to take fourth overall and the Master’s (40+) win in 10:49. Finishing fifth overall and taking the women’s victory in 11:02 was 28-year-old Angela Cobb. The Melbourne Beach mother-of-one had put eight seconds between herself and training partner, Jessica Crate, who took second place in 11:10. The two ladies have been trading wins this season and what happens at the upcoming Run for the Gecko 5K Hawaiian Luau on May 12 will determine this season’s overall female champ. Palm Bay’s Jessica Wiedenbaurer, 28, took third place in 12:28 and Satellite Beaches Cathy Friedel nailed the Master’s win in 13:08. Check out the great race and awards photos provided by TriHokie.com that are available for free download at http://www.runningzone.com/event_results Congratulations and thank you to all of the Pirate Plunder participant’s volunteers and sponsors. Proceeds from the event will benefit both the United True Order of Sisters providing free mammograms and Camp Hope for bereaved children.

New at Running Zone: Tiger Tail

With all the self-massage tools on the market you may be asking yourself, “how is the Tiger Tail different from other rolling muscle massagers?” n Its soft cushy cover is muscle-friendly and there are no spindles, beads or gaps to pinch skin, pull out hair and snag clothing. n It has built-in thumb tools on the grips, allowing you to do spot-specific trigger point work. n The firm design allows as little or as much pressure needed to get the job done without bending or breaking out of shape. n It’s easy to clean. The closed-cell, non-porous, non-absorbent, zero latex, non-deteriorating foam cleans easy with antibacterial gel. n The Tiger Tail travels easily, is competitively priced and has a three-year, no hassle warranty.

The Running Zone Foundation and Coach Doug Butler are offering something fun and different for the entire family this summer! “Most adults came to running later in life so they’ve never had a chance to do many of these events,” said Butler, who has coached both the Holy Trinity cross-country and track and field teamswww.newbalance.com/ to multiple goodformrunning state victories. “It’s a chance to do something fresh.” For just $5 per week, participants will be offered several challenges including track events ranging from 100 meters to two miles; and field events that could include anything from the long jump to shot put. Below is the schedule for the Gecko Club Summer Track Series. Come join us!

Team division details appear later in this brochure or can be found in the Running Zone Race Series section of our website at http://www.runningzone.com/series/.

The School Team Challenge provides fitness and increased self-esteem for those 14 and under. More than 500 individuals in elementary and middle school have participated this season and Running Zone can help your school develop a walking or running program for your students.

Our Team Challenge lets any five friends, family members and/or co-workers enjoy the fun of competing together against other teams in the same category.

And, knowing that being part of a team can provide sense of camaraderie and extra encouragement, we also offer awards in three team categories for each race as well as the overall Series.
