The year in the life of the Gecko What a fresh start we had in ‘09 It is coming to a close, but oh was it fine! January brought us to the Walt Disney Expo, Selling CWX tights like a pro. In February, there were Wednesday night fun runs at the Zoo, So that way the animals had a clue. At the Brevard Zoo, in March, everyone shuffled over stingrays, As a result the zoo received $5,000 from your support and praise.
The month of May marked our anniversary of 6 years, Don shed some tears, while I had some beers. New this year, Run for the Gecko had a theme, Hawaiian luau and hula dancers, Running Zone goes extreme. June presents Running Zone Race Series Awards Ceremony, The evening’s speaker was Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Mills: the REAL deal, no phony. Boom! Crack! Fire! We start off the series with our Inaugural Firecracker 5k in July, Hot dogs and chips were in high supply. I Run for Pizza Football Kick-off Party in August was a good time, Everyone enjoyed Pizza Gallery’s pizza; so delicious it should be a crime. With the purchase of the Chronotrack system; participants were introduced to the D-tag, Now your timing results are instantaneous, No lag.
brought many smiling faces, Just think how many people came from far away places! To wrap up the year [no pun intended] the Jingle Bell 2-miler should get a round of applause, With jingle bells, cool weather, and even Santa Claus.
In September, our employees journeyed to Everest at Disney, Running the 5k, obstacle course, and scavenger hunt in water up to each knee. RZ sponsored the FLRunners Cross Country meet, Being a part of the event was such a treat.
Reflections of Running Zone make Don and me feel so blessed, Now it’s time for vacation and a little rest.

10 Years in Retrospect Wow, it has been 10 years since we started Running Zone! That’s two age group divisions. Things get pretty busy that you usually don’t take the time to reflect back but writing the Den this month as part of our 10 year anniversary allowed for a little retrospection. It seems like not too long ago, Denise was our only employee at our first location (1600 sq. ft) and we weren’t involved in any races. Our kids were still young teenagers and did homework at the store after school. Starting to be involved in races seemed logical but it wasn’t part of our original business plan. The first race we ever timed was the 2004 Space Coast Light Fest and Rhonda Butler held our hand through the entire race process. That was the start of our journey to encourage Brevard County residents to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. We didn’t know it at the time but this was the first step to where we are now.
events and to add more employees to the Running Zone family. We have been truly blessed with great employees and Running Zone would not have been successful without each and every employee along the way. I want to thank every employee of Running Zone.
But most importantly, we want to thank our customers and the participants of our events because without you, we would not be here. We have formed great friendships and relationships throughout the 10 years and feel very fortunate to have a business in Brevard County. The Space Coast is a great place to live and raise a family and being part of the Space Coast is truly a blessing. Thank you, Brevard County!

Battling for the Bounty by Patti Sponsler More than 800 pirates of all shapes and sizes shook out their sea legs as they commandeered the streets of downtown Melbourne during the Pirate Plunder 2-miler on April 6. During last year’s race – on a different course – Cap’ns Peter Clusener and Michael Fisher did fierce battle for top booty and this year was no different. Clusener, 35, hit the first mile in 5:02, three seconds ahead of the 20-year-old lad. The flaxen-haired three-year-old proudly sports the cool blue race t-shirt accessorized with the surfboard-carrying dog medal she earned after completing the 1.31-mile Melbourne Beach course. “Gussie was so excited to take home the shirt and medal,” said Megan Campbell, Gussie’s mom. “It was her first race and she wants to wear the shirt and medal constantly.” The inaugural Kids’ event –open to children ages 12 and under - also offered a 2.62-mile marathon and the coveted Double Dog Dare challenge to those who completed both events. The kids’-only morning was a natural outgrowth of the resolute commitment Running Zone Foundation made to “get children moving” before the organization produced its first road race almost a decade ago. "We are trying to get kids to like exercise at a young age and feel good about themselves,” said Denise Piercy, co-owner of Running Zone, in a 2004 interview. “We want to instill lifelong healthy habits and help fight childhood obesity." To that end, every Running Zone Foundation race has offered festive family-oriented themes, free tot trots and an opportunity for those 14 and under to win awards in three age categories plus
the School Participation division. With the successful formula sometimes pulling in more than 400 kids per race, the time was opportune to build a stand-alone race for the younger set. “This was exciting to the kids because the focus was on them instead of being an add-on to another event,” said Campbell, whose eightyear-old daughter, Gretchen, also participated. “The kids knew their friends were doing it, too, and that added to the fun.” The race drew more than 300 kids and more than 80 of them completed both the half and full events to earn the coveted ‘Double Dog Dare’ medal. “I hope Running Zone does more of these races,” said Campbell, an avid runner and competitive triathlete. “As a parent, I don’t want to make my kids do something that is not fun for them. I liked these races because I felt like my daughters would be able to do these distances and feel successful.” “We all had fun.” Proceeds from the Long Dogger’s Kids’ Marathon and Half-Marathon benefitted the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Florida. Satellite Beaches Gretchen, 8, and Gussie, 3, Campbell, were proud of the medals they earned at the Long Dogger’s Kids’ HalfMarathon on April 13 at Ryckman Park in Melbourne Beach.

Orthotics and the Runner By Richard C. Wilson, DPM, Melbourne Podiatry Associates
“Inexpensive Customized Sports Orthotics!” This ad in the paper caught Jennifer’s eye. Tired of chronic foot pain and uncertain of what to do, she went to the Happy Toes Store that ran the ad. After a high pressure sales pitch, two minutes of standing on a “pressure force platform”, and a $250.00 charge, Jennifer walked out with her “customized running orthotics”. Unable to tolerate wearing them, she threw them into a closet, where they sit today. This story happens all over the country on a daily basis. Everyone nowadays has heard of “orthotics”, and everyone wants to sell them. What is an “orthotic”? Actually, the term “orthotic” is used incorrectly, as it is an adjective instead of a noun. The proper term is “orthotic device” or “orthosis”. The word “orthosis” (plural “orthoses”) is from the Greek word “orthos”, meaning “straight”. An orthosis is defined as an external device that prevents or assists the movement of the spine or a limb. Thus, by definition, a foot orthosis is a device that limits or controls foot motion. Because everyone uses the term “orthotic” instead of “orthosis”, albeit incorrectly, I will use this term in this article for the sake of simplicity. There are hundreds of types of foot orthotics available today. They can be categorized as “over the counter” (OTC) devices available without a prescription, and “custom orthotics”, which are obtained from a doctor with a prescription. They can also be categorized as “accommodative” and “functional”. Accommodative orthotics are used to accommodate an existing foot structure or problem, or to relieve pain without attempting to change the foot’s function. A good example of this would be a soft insole that provides shock absorption. A functional orthotic attempts to reposition a portion of the foot to change its function. True functional orthotics are usually prescription devices. Podiatrists prescribe orthotics for numerous foot conditions. For example, functional orthotics called “gait plates” are prescribed for children to treat gait abnormalities such as in-toeing, out-toeing, and severe flatfoot. Accommodative orthotics of soft materials are often prescribed for diabetic patients to relieve pressure points, and for rheumatoid arthritic patients with painful foot joints.
Orthotics of various types are used extensively in sports medicine for a variety of conditions. Although some conditions of poor shock absorption such as shin splints, metatarsalgia, and heel bruising respond to soft, often OTC orthotics, most sports related conditions require a functional orthotic. Most functional orthotics are made from a family of plastics called polyolefins. Orthotics made from these materials can range in thickness from 1/8 to ¼ inch, and can be very flexible to very rigid. Often, softer top covers are added, as are layers of shock absorbing materials in a composite fashion. The proper prescribing process of a custom functional orthotic involves several steps. First, your podiatrist will examine joint range of motion of the foot and ankle. The purpose of this is to evaluate possible laxity or limitation of joint motion. Next, examination of muscle strength will be done to determine tightness or weakness, and how this contributes to the biomechanics of the foot. After the examination, a nonweight-

bearing neutral position plaster cast is taken of the foot. This cast is sent to a laboratory with a detailed prescription of specifications that your doctor requires. The laboratory then creates the orthotic and returns it to your doctor’s office. As can be seen, the manufacturer of a custom functional orthotic is a complex continues on page 15

Sodium, Muscle Cramps and Sweat Losses: Tips for Sweaty Athletes by Nancy Clark MS RD CSSD
We’ve all heard the stories about marathoners and soldiers who have died due to consuming too much water. Clearly, overhydration can be as dangerous to your health as underhydration. So what does a sweaty athlete need to know about staying adequately hydrated without stomach sloshing? Dr. Timothy Noakes' book Waterlogged: The Serious Problem of Overhydration in Endurance Sports is an interesting yet controversial resource that addresses that question. According to Dr. Noakes, the sports drink industry has effectively marketed a positive image (successful athletes) despite having an overhyped product (salted sugar-water). Noakes believes the sports drink industry has brainwashed athletes to overhydrate—and this has created life-threatening problems. For example, between 1983 and 1998, more than 700 cases of exercise-induced hyponatremia (overhydration that leads to low blood sodium, brain swelling, coma, and even death) were documented in the Gatorade-sponsored Ironman Hawaii Triathlon. The participants had been encouraged to drink copiously. Did that advice backfire? For the Comrades Marathon, participants were told to drink according to thirst. Race organizers placed aid stations every 5 km (3 miles) and cases of hyponatermia dropped.
Orthotics and the Runner multi-step process. The difference between a custom functional orthotic and some device made by standing on a platform or in a “measuring box” in a retail store is obvious. The results obtained from the two different devices are also obvious. I am not opposed to a runner trying an inexpensive device before seeking a custom orthotic. Some minor conditions can be effectively treated by readily available OTC devices. I would not recommend spending over $50.00 for such a device. If such a device doesn’t help, then one should consider a custom orthotic. Custom orthotics are generally not covered by health insurance plans. However, they are covered by health savings plans and
The information in Waterlogged challenges the theory drink before you get thirsty. Noakes believes elite athletes who become champions can tolerate significant sweat loss without untolerable thirst. He contends the associated weight lost via sweating enhances performance. Others question if those athletes could run better if better hydrated! Below are a few droplets of less-controversial hydration information to help you quench your thirst, perform well, and stay out of the medical tent when you are doing extended exercise in hot weather. n Our bodies can deal with transient underhydration that lasts from 4 to 8 hours. In contrast, chronic dehydration leads to health issues—such as happens when elderly people are trapped in hot apartments during a heatwave. n Most athletes feel thirsty at about 2% dehydration. At that point, they'll start looking for water. Ultrarunners can maintain performance at 3% dehydration. (To determine your percent dehydration, weigh yourself naked before and after your workout. A one-pound drop equates to a loss of 16-ounces of sweat; 2% dehydration equates to a 3 pound sweat loss for a 150-lb. person.) n Thirst is a powerful fluid regulator. Noakes disapproves of the advice to drink before you

health savings accounts. As previously mentioned, the recommendation for an orthotic is made by your podiatrist after a thorough examination reveals a condition that would benefit from one. In my sports medicine practice, I use custom orthotics primarily for chronic plantar fasciitis, medial knee pain, severe pronation or supination, and to off-load the forefoot in severe metatarsalgia and pes cavus feet. Frequently, I will recommend an OTC device first, reserving the custom orthotic for the more severe or resistant cases. In summary, orthotic therapy, if properly utilized, is a useful modality that can benefit runners with a variety of conditions. According to the American Academy of Podiatric
Sports Medicine, “Successful orthotic therapy should always include an orthotic device that is effective in reducing or eliminating symptoms and is comfortable to wear”. Dr. Wilson, a Melbourne native and Florida Gator, earned his doctorate degree from the Illinois College of podiatric Medicine in Chicago. After completing a surgical residence in Chicago, Dr. Wilson returned to Melbourne where he has been practicing with Melbourne Podiatry Associates for 30 years. The good doctor is passionate about his profession; running – a sport in which he has reveled for more than 45 years – and writing, particularly about all things running and foot related.

Sodium, Muscle Cramps and Sweat Losses: Tips for Sweaty Athletes continued from page 15
not aggressively overhydrate but rather replace fluids according to their sweat losses (as learned during training via pre-post exercise weigh-ins). n Exercise-induced hyponatremia (low blood sodium) occurs when athletes drink excessively during prolonged exercise. It can also occur when even dehydrated endurance athletes lose significant amounts of sodium in sweat. Data from 669 ultramarathoners indicates 15% experienced low blood sodium. Of those, 24% were overhydrated, 36% were dehydrated, and the rest were in fluid balance (but not sodium balance) (1). n The amount of sodium lost in sweat varies from person to person. Some people are salty sweaters. Athletes accustomed to exercising in the heat retain more sodium than unacclimatized athletes. (Compare the saltiness of your sweat on first hot day of spring vs. in the fall.)
n Athletes lose relatively more water than sodium, so under standard conditions, the blood sodium level can actually increase during exercise (unless you overhydrate). But with abnormally high sodium high losses, such as during an ultramarathon, blood sodium can be low even in a dehydrated athlete. Hence, sodium replacement can be a wise idea. n The amount of sodium in a sports drink is small—and unable to counter the dilution of body fluids that occurs with over- drinking. The 220 mg of sodium in 16 ounces of Gatorade is far less than ~1000 mg sodium in 16 ounces of sweat loss. n Noakes says evidence is lacking to prove that athletes who cramp have low serum sodium or are more dehydrated than noncrampers. He suggests muscle cramps are related to fatigue, not sodium deficiency. If sodium deficiency was the problem, wouldn't the entire body cramp, not just one muscle? n Exercise-induced muscle cramps occur in muscles that perform repetitive contractions. Athletes who get cramps tend to be those who do high intensity exercise, as well as those who have a history of cramping. Note: Many exercise scientists believe there are two types of muscle cramps: some related to fatigue, others related to sodium imbalance. The science of cramping lacks a clear consensus! n Stopping exercise to stretch resolves muscles cramping. (Stretching also resolves nocturnal cramps.) n A 2.5 oz. mouthful of (salty) pickle juice has been shown to alleviate muscle cramping within 90 seconds of drinking the pickle juice. This rapid benefit is unlikely due to changes in blood sodium levels—too quick! Noakes speculates drinking the (acidic) pickle juice triggers a reflex in the throat that lessens or stops the cramps. n An athlete who collapses after the finish line is most likely experiencing blood pressure changes—not severe dehydration. When exercise stops, the heart stops pumping enough blood to the brain; the athlete collapses. Noakes advises to quickly raise the athlete’s feet and pelvis above the level of their heart. This aids the return of blood to the heart and rapidly corrects the situation—without any IV fluids. So what’s a sweaty endurance athlete supposed to do during prolonged exercise? Learn your sweat rate and drink accordingly. If fluid in your stomach starts “sloshing”, stop
Thirst is a powerful fluid regulator. Most athletes feel thirsty at about 2% dehydration. To determine your percent dehydration, weigh yourself naked before and after your workout. A one-pound drop equates to a loss of 16-ounces of sweat.
drinking! The body can absorb about 600 to 1,000 ml/hour (women/ men). Adding carbohydrates and sodium to the water enhances fluid absorption as well as palatability and performance. Consuming “real” foods (salty pretzels, pickles, chicken broth, ham-cheesemustard wrap) during ultraendurance events can do a fine job of providing needed electrolytes. Just don’t get too aggressive with water or sodium intake—and have fun! When Don and Denise Piercy open Running Zone ten years ago, they had no idea how much of an impact they would make to the fitness community. We asked a few people who ran the original Run for the Gecko Hawaiian Luau what they think Running Zone has brought to the table. Below are their responses. Carol Ball: completed the 2004 Run for the Gecko in 21:56, winning the 45-49 age group. Today Carol is the President of Space Coast Runners and a Running Zone (New Balance store) employee. At 56-years old and in spite of chronic knee pain, Carol still usually earns one of the top three age group spots in local road races. “Running Zone has turned running races in Brevard County into a party with the upbeat atmosphere, fun giveaways, costumes, and unique awards. They draw people of all ages and abilities because it is always FUN! The biggest change, though, has been the Space Coast Marathon & Half Marathon. It is a great community event!” Stephanie Bird: completed the 2004 Run for the Gecko in 22:15 to earn third place in the 12-14 age group. Today, 22-year-old Stephanie lives and works in Colorado Springs as an Acquisition and Retention Coordinator for USA Triathlon. “Running Zone has enabled the growth of the running community in Brevard County. It has opened up opportunities for both new and experienced runners to train and race in a fun/friendly environment.” Doug Butler: completed the 2004 Run for the Gecko in 16:29, placing second overall. Today Doug teaches and coaches crosscountry and track for Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy and owns the running camp Set Goals, Not Limits. At 51, Doug still captures a top-ten spot in most of the races he runs. “Wow, how time has flown by. I do remember that (first Running Zone) race very well. I had a couple of my young guns that day and that second place was a long distance from young Austin Joiner nearly a minute ahead of me. He was only 16 but already running mid- 15s. about how to organize a race I tell them to go to Running Zone and let them do all the work. It is nice to have clocks at the miles splits; have printed results updated every five to 10 minutes as runners are still coming in; have chip-timed starts and free finish line photos in many cases. They have been very successful in getting 500 to 1,000+ runners to show up, something you rarely saw around here before. One of their innovations is realizing that there were a lot of people who prefer shorter distances like 3K or two miles. Their Series has nothing longer than 5K. I sometimes prefer longer races, so it is good to see them timing Space Coast Marathon including splits at 10K, half and 20 miles. ”

The Little Gecko Who Did! by Patti Sponsler
When Don and Denise Piercy opened Running Zone in May of 2003, no one could have guessed that the bottom was about to fall out of the economy. While many businesses, large and small, shed employees, pared down square footage or closed, Running Zone thrived and as they did, our local community was greatly enriched both physically and financially. Below are some amazing fast facts about what they’ve accomplished as well as the Roving Gecko Reporter’s interview with the Piercys about their 10-year journey.
Fast Facts: 10-year Running Zone history

Running Zone: Don came up with that one a year after we opened. It was fun getting Zippy made. As we became more involved in the races, Don thought it would be fun to have a mascot for our kids’ runs and to help with the awards. It also helped us brand our logo and store. RGR: Running Zone and our area have faced some serious business challenges - the 2004 hurricanes and the Great Recession, just to mention two. In spite of those challenges, you have had to move twice to increase your square footage; race attendance has continued to grow; your sponsorship partnerships have increased and your charitable contribution to Brevard county non-profits continue to grow - what do you think has helped you remain positive and successful? Running Zone: When you are passionate about something, it is easy to stay positive. I haven’t worked since we opened our business 10 years ago. (Don talking) This is FUN! I think some of our success is based on the fact that every decision we make is to try and improve the customer experience or the participant experience. Every year, Running Zone Foundation produces a 3K run/walk at the Brevard Zoo and all proceeds are donated to the Zoo. RGR: It probably doesn’t seem like much when you’re immersed in the day-to-day aspects of running a business but when I looked at all that had been created, contributed and accomplished in ten years, I was astounded. What do you feel have been your biggest accomplishments so far? Running Zone: We are very proud of establishing Running Zone Foundation and the events that are part of the foundation. Our entire team works so hard on these events and when we receive good feedback (most of the time ), it makes all of the effort worthwhile. RGR: In spite of the Great Recession, your race participation numbers continue to grow. Why do you think that is? Running Zone: I think it is because we try so hard to make each event a fun experience for anyone that wants to participate. RGR: You began adding School Participation and Corporate Competition to your Series races in 2007 and 2008. Those numbers have grown to the point where you added a separate Corporate 5K race and the Long Dogger's Kids' Half-Marathon (1.31-miles) and Marathon (2.62) events. What do you think the benefits are of a separate Corporate event and the Kids' only events? Running Zone: Having two separate events, each targeted towards a specific audience allows us to focus specifically on each group. Working with the various companies, primarily through their HR dept and/or their wellness programs, allows us to increase awareness of all of the benefits of exercise to both the company and their employees. If the trend continues, the Corporate 5k should continue to grow for many years. Improving teamwork and camaraderie is the goal of our Corporate 5K. Each year we continue to see more first time walkers at our Corporate 5K so this is exciting. It also gives each employee a great chance to have pride in their company with their co-workers. I think everyone sees the benefit in that. The kid’s event was a huge success this year. We were so thrilled with how it went. Whenever we have a first year event, we are so worried going into it, hoping everything works out like we planned. This was it! It went so well! We can’t wait for next year. Parents participated with their kids and the kids had such a great time! Our hope is to introduce exercise to children at a young age and show them how much fun it can be

After Running Zone introduced the space theme to Space Coast Marathon, Runners World Magazine dubbed the event both ‘the race of the month’ and later, ‘the race with the best schwag’. In 2012, alone, the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon generated $1.055M in the local economy.
to participate so it becomes a life long life style and choice everyday. RGR: Running Zone began partnering with SCR when you picked up title sponsorship in 2003 and then took over race management in 2005. The race(s) have grown so dramatically under your management that you now have to cap the event(s). What do you think contributed to this amazing ? Running Zone: It all started when Don had the awesome idea of adding the space theme! I’ll never forget it. We were sitting at the kitchen table and he blurts it all out, including starting the race with the countdown to launch of a shuttle on a Jumbotron. Brevard County is probably best known for the Space Program and our beautiful beaches and the Space Coast Marathon & Half Marathon highlight both of our county’s best features. In addition to the Space theme, I think the race continues to grow because we offer large marathon amenities while still maintaining an intimate experience for each participant. This year, with the addition of the Big Bang Series, we capped the race because we knew everyone would want to get in for the 5-year series. It has been received very well and our registration is already 1/3 full. We have never had this many registrations at this early date. RGR: Running Zone Foundation has contributed ~$.250M from race proceeds to the community - where do you see those monies making a difference? Running Zone: All of the beneficiaries have been local non-profit organizations, mostly within Brevard County. There
are so many unbelievable organizations helping residents in our county and being able to help with the funding of some of these organizations, is very rewarding. In particular, one of my favorites is a new shade area that was built at the zoo for the rhinos when we did the Rhino Romp a couple of years ago. Rhinos need shade too! RGR: You opened a second retail store - New Balance - a couple of years ago. Do you find a lot of synergy and/or differences between the way you run both stores? Running Zone: Yes, they compliment each other very well. We carry many other types of footwear at our NB store that we don’t have at RZ. Now we can serve customers better by being able to offer other footwear besides just running and walking shoes. RGR: When you look over these past ten years, of what are you most proud? Running Zone: It is so great to see how many running and walking events there are in the county and how many people are now attending these events. We hope we have had some part in helping to improve fitness and exercise in our county. RGR: Do you have any 'stand-out' memories, good or bad, about the last ten years? Running Zone: The hurricanes in 2004 were very memorable. Staying up all night soaking up lots and lots of water in the front of the store so the inventory wasn’t damaged was something I will never forget. Both Denise and I have both been approached occasionally over the years with people thanking us for helping them get started with exercising and this is what makes what we do everyday worthwhile. RGR: As successful small-business owners, what would be your best three pieces of advice for others considering opening their own business? Running Zone: Open a business that compliments what you like to do. Know that you are going to be focused on the business most of the time (day and night) and you will get out of it what you put into it. RGR: Where do you see Running Zone, Running Zone Foundation and Running Zone Race Management in five and ten years? Running Zone: With the alarming trend our country’s overweight and obesity epidemic, our goal will be to try to reverse the trend here locally. RGR: If you could go back in time ten years and tell yourself something that you didn’t know then but do know today, what would that be? Running Zone: You should have opened 10 years earlier!
Happy 10th Anniversary to Running Zone and the Run for the Gecko Hawaiian Luau 5k

While it’s easy to keep tabs on the local race scene by scrolling through the race results posted at RunningZone.com, we also like to congratulate our local athletes who have worked hard to accomplish race goals beyond Brevard’s Borders.
Melbourne’s Pam Maxwell and Brad Cody took first and second in their respective age groups at Ironman 70.3 Texas in Galveston on April 7.
April 7: Ironman 70.3 Texas, Galveston, TX
They came, they raced, they kicked some butt at Ironman 70.3 in Galveston on April 7. Four locals flew to the big state to test their early season fitness and passed with flying colors. Check out their times and places below for the 1.2-mile swim; 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. Congratulations to Brad Cody, 52, Melbourne, 2nd 50-54, 4:35:51; Brad Daszynski, 31, Melbourne, 4th 30-34, 4:36:27; John Hardos, 63, Rockledge, 4th 60-64, 5:58:26; Pam Maxwell, 48, Melbourne, 1st 45-49, 4:51:16.
As locals Angela Wells and John Ouweleen posed for a photo at the expo prior to the Boston Marathon, they had no idea that the race would be forever changed by a pair of deranged men who detonated two bombs near the finish line.
April 15: Boston Marathon, Boston, MA
Normally we would use the words ‘historic’ or ‘iconic’ to describe the Boston Marathon but somehow the words now seem to be defined by the devastating bombings as opposed to the rich tradition of this race or the enormity of what it means to qualify to run there. We feel that the homicidal cowards who planted those bombs would, in a sense, win, if we chose not to celebrate the accomplishments of those who participated in the 117th running of the Boston Marathon. Many of our locals re-qualified again to compete in the 118th running next year – no easy task on the deceptive and undulating course. And, how many 72-year-olds do you know who can run this course in 3:23:52? Our own John ‘Johnny O’ Ouweleen did just that, taking second place in his age group. Ouweleen, who finished behind Columbia’s Hernan Barreneche, was more than 15 minutes ahead of the next American finisher. His finish just goes to show that ‘Johnny O’ is the right guy to currently reign as the USATF age group champion in both the marathon and half marathon distance. CONGRATULATIONS to all of those who began the April 15th journey in Hopkinton including Chiqui Behymer, 48, Titusville, stopped by officials at 25.5 miles due to bomb detonations around the corner on Boylston Street; Christine Kennedy, 47, Mims, did not go up this year due to job change. Management was ready to break two hours. After finishing in 2:03 and then learning the course had been long, Prosser was optimistic that she’d meet her goal the following month at the Lake Minneola Half. On April 20, Prosser exceeded her own expectations as she crossed the line in 1:56:43, earning a seven-minute PR and taking 2nd in the 45-49 age group. And, making her morning all the sweeter, Kimberly’s husband, Harry, won the 40-44 age group with his PR 1:38:43 finish. April 28: St. Anthony’s Triathlon (.93/24.8/6.2), St. Petersburg, FL

water swim in Tampa Bay; tackle a technically tough 24.8-mile bike race through the neighborhood and downtown streets of St. Petersburg and then run a warm and humid 6.2 miles. But maybe the Indialantic owner of INI Productions is on to something! Germany’s Jan Frodeno, who took yesterday’s overall race win in 1:47:05, shared a similar nutritional strategy during a post-race press conference. “I downed a whole cheesecake this morn ing and I reckon it fueled me through,” said the 2008 Olympic Triathlon gold medalist. While carbs and fat helped Frodeno to the top spot, raw emotion fueled the 1:57:10 women’s victory for Alicia Kay. “I just really used the survivor’s will to survive as my inspiration today,” said the Clermont pro who raced with the words ‘Boston Strong’ inked on both legs to honor her mother-in-law who crossed her 25th Boston Marathon finish line just 90 seconds before the first bomb went off. Since the April 15 tragedy, race directors worldwide have tightened security and paid tribute to those injured or killed and to all of the heroes who stayed or came to help. St. Anthony’s did likewise and prior to race start a moment of silence was held as a bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace toned somberly. At 6:50 a.m., the first of 28 swim waves –which included more than 3,500 athletes from 44 states and 23 countries - charged into the disjointed froth being churned up by 15 mph winds. After the pro heats went off, the 1.5K swim was shortened to 750 meters for the amateur elites and age groupers. “They were being safe,” said Satellite

Beaches Cathy Friedel. “They didn’t want drownings or heart attacks. I would have liked to have the whole swim because that is one of my strong points.” Not that the shorter swim really hurt her, though. After the top two in the women’s 50-54 age group were pulled out for Master’s awards, Friedel was given the age group victory. “I was happy because I had a really good run in the heat,” said Friedel, whose secondto-the-last wave start didn’t put her on the run course until after 10 a.m. “I dropped my time from last year’s run by two and a half minutes.” Friedel, who is coached by Virginia’s Debi Weber Bernardes, has gained incredible endurance and speed adhering to Bernardes heart-rate tutelage. “I am so much faster this year,” said Friedel, who jams her training between the demands of her full-time job and five chilcontinues on page 23

dren. “I’ve finally graduated from zone one and can do a little bit of speed work now.” Friedel, who is now focusing on the June 9 EagleMan 70.3 – a Kona qualifier – was not the only local to bring home St. Anthony’s top ten awards and shwag. Christy Zieres, grabbed her third straight Athena victory in 2:42:07. The Merritt Island high school English teacher and swim coach has placed in the top three in each of her eight St. Anthony’s finishes. Melbourne Beaches Tricia Rydson, who
