EVENT GUIDE noVEMbER 14 - 16, 2014 RunRocknRoll.com
RunRocknRoll.com Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point. Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

Rock ‘n’ Roll LAS VEGAS MARATHON & 1/2 to benefit the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America
TEAM CHALLENGE: GET FIT, MAKE FRIENDS, CHANGE LIVES Team Challenge is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s endurance training and fundraising program. Join us and train for a half marathon, triathlon, cycle or IRONMAN event! Athletes registered with Team Challenge raise money to help fund cutting edge research that will ultimately lead to cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis - two painful, debilitating, and seldomdiscussed digestive diseases that affect 1 in 200 Americans, including 150,000 children nationwide.
Why join Team Challenge? As one of the premier endurance training programs in the country, Team Challenge offers great benefits and support as you train
and fundraise. When you join the Team, you’ll receive a custom weekly training program by professional coaches at local venues and an expense-paid weekend at a destination race. Best of all, you’ll help find cures for the 1.4 million Americans suffering from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
JOIN THE TEAM IN 2015! We’re forming teams now for half marathons in Napa wine country, Newport, RI and Dublin, Ireland as well as triathlons in Yosemite, Hawaii, Staffordshire (UK), Quebec, Chattanooga and New York City! Get started today: Visit us at expo booth #107, call 866-931-2611, or visit CCTEAMCHALLENGE.ORG!

ALONG THE COURSE
Enjoy incredible views of the Strip at Night while watching for your runner! Instead of standing to wait for your runner to pass by, check out the numerous options of eclectic bars, restaurants and shops on Las Vegas Boulevard. Stop by the “Information” or “Runner Perks” booths at the Health & Fitness Expo for our reccomendations!
GETTING TO THE FINISH LINE
The finish line is located less than 2 miles from the start line.
Take a scenic stroll along Las Vegas Boulevard toward the finish line, or take the convenient Monorail from the station located at MGM Grand and exit at the Harrah’s/Imperial Palace Station.
POST-RACE PLAN
Be sure to discuss a post-race reunion plan with your runner before the race to avoid any confusion following the race. The finish line will be extremely crowded with participants, so we recommend to meet your runner at one of the many hotels and casinos near the finish line. Please note: there will NOT be family reunion signs in the finish line area, so making a plan is extremely important.

Race Day Checklist
The final two days before a race are very important. Follow this checklist to ensure that you get the most out of the hard training you’ve done.
—By Matt Fitzgerald
48:00 | DO A SHORT, FAST WORKOUT
For example, run three miles easy, then run 6 x 30-second relaxed sprints.
47:00 | START CARBO-LOADING
Be sure to consume high-carb foods and beverages at every meal.
31:00 | GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
Getting adequate sleep is critical the final days before a big race.
22:00 | DO A SHORT, EASY WORKOUT
every race.
18:00 | PLAN FOR RACE DAY
Make a concrete plan for race day that includes a wake-up time and a route to the race venue
2:45 | EAT YOUR PRE-RACE MEAL
It is important to wake up in plenty of time to consume and digest a high-carb pre-race meal three hours before your race start.
2:15 | MAKE SURE YOUR GEAR IS READY
It relieves mental and physical tension and keeps the body primed for performance.
Go through your gear checklist one last time. Be sure not to forget the small essentials such as sunscreen and your race number.
21:00-10:00 | KEEP CARBO-LOADING
0:30 | WARM UP THOROUGHLY
Maintain your high-carb diet throughout the last day before you race. Choose familiar foods that have always worked well for your body in the past. Now is not the time to experiment.
Start your warm-up about half an hour before your race start. Begin with easy jogging, then do some dynamic stretches such as walking lunges and arm circles.
20:00 | GET YOUR GEAR TOGETHER
Take some time to get all of your gear together; create a race gear checklist that you use for 32

Night Running
RUNNING AT NIGHT Racing at night presents some interesting challenges for the athlete. You are no longer “In Sync” with your daily biorhythms, and the timing affects sleep, diet, and equipment selection. The best advice is to try and simulate race conditions, 2-3 days prior to the event. Sleep-in a little, and stay up later, to adjust your ‘internal clock’. Meal planning is also complex, since you want to start the race on an empty stomach, but still have enough fuel. Finally, remember that as this race progresses it actually gets colder [especially in the desert], making it difficult to dress appropriately. The following tips will help you plan for your night run, and have a great Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.

Acclimatize to race time by staying up later, and sleeping-in Go for a 2-3 mile run at race time, for a day or two before the event Biggest meal pre-race should be breakfast, then a light lunch [pasta, rice, waffle] Start with a light sweater tied around the waist and add ‘layers’ as needed Consider a light-weight hat, gloves and a headlamp [it will be dark] PLEASE fill out the Medical Information on the back of your number bib

Respect the Distance
RX TO ROCK
ADVICE FROM THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.
For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.
TRAIN
HYDRATE
SALT
It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.
If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes.
Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.
If you have questions, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On… 40
