runrocknroll.com Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point. Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

King & Queen The crowning of the Carnival King and Queen is a tradition of Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans, and is now in its fifth year. The King and Queen were selected by YOU via the #NOLAROYALTY contest held January 1-January 10 on Facebook. We are happy to announce this year’s royalty; all hail the Carnival King and Queen!
KING & QUEEN
King, Tim Hinds Queen, Gina Mooney
The crowned receive the royal treatment throughout race weekend including the following: • 2 Nights stay at a host hotel • 2 Race day VIP credentials Gina Mooney lives in Sumrall, MS with her husband and their 5 children. She’s been running since February 2010 and can say that it’s definitely changed my life! She has run in numerous 5ks,10ks, 6 half marathons and will be running the Rock n Roll New Orleans Marathon for a 3rd time this year! Because running has had such a huge impact on her life she started a blog called Slow is the New Fast, which has also turned into a virtual running community of sorts on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/slowisthenewfast). Runners of all levels can offer support, encouragement, advice and celebrate their accomplishments. During her own marathon training, she’s adopted this motto: Embrace your pace and enjoy the journey! Tim Hinds was born and raised in Thibodaux, Louisiana and attended college and grad school at LSU and Southeastern Louisiana University. He currently lives in Boston where he’s training to run the 2014 Boston Marathon for the ALLY Foundation charity team. Tim ran cross country in high school and had been mostly a 5k and 10k runner until this past year. He was a spectator at the Boston Marathon in April three blocks away from the finish line; since then, his goal has been to run the race for himself. He ran his first half in September at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence Half Marathon, and the Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans Marathon will be his first full.

Destination: New Orleans Welcome to the sinfully southern city of New Orleans! Being one of the most culturally rich destinations in the United States, The Big Easy offers everything from decadent cuisine, unique history, and a vibrant nightlife. The city is like no other so be sure to experience all that this southern gem has to offer, and Laissez les bons temps rouler!
DESTINATION: NOLA
Say What? It’s no secret the city of New Orleans has a language all its own. While down in the south, do as the locals do and say as they say! • “Banquette” [bang-ket] - French for a small bank along the road, or sidewalk • “Fixin’ to” - About to or going to • “Fo True?” - Seriously? • “Laissez les bons temps rouler” [lazay lay bon tom roulay] - Let the good times roll • “Lagniappe” [lan-yap] - something extra thrown in to sweeten the deal • “N’awlins” - New Orleans • “Y’at” - Standard greeting: “Where y’at?”

Canal Street was once the widest street in the world! It was named for a canal that was planned for on the street’s dividing median, but was never built. The total mileage of canals both above and below ground in New Orleans exceeds that of Venice, Italy. Louisiana is the only state that is divided into parishes, not counties. The nickname Crescent City alludes to the shape of the Mississippi River that bends around and through the city.
New Orleans is distinctive from its unique dialect right down to its world famous cuisine. Influenced by a melting pot of culture; you are bound to find exceptional food on almost every corner.
Beignets — [ben-yays] Also referred to as a “French doughnuts”, are square cut pieces of fried dough covered in a generous amount of powdered sugar. Best when served hot and with café au lait or chocolate milk. Gumbo – This dish has become one of the best examples of New Orleans’ melting pot cultural. Although several restaurants offer various types of gumbo — seafood, chicken, andouille sausage — locals will tell you there is no set recipe for the perfect gumbo.

Antoine’s Restaurant – Established in 1840, Antoine’s is the state’s oldest continuously operating restaurant. Famous for its French-Creole cuisine and 14 unique dining rooms, the walls are lined with memorabilia from notable guests such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, President Roosevelt, Judy Garland and Pope John Paul the II.

Marc Broussard
HEADLINER
The son of Boogie Kings guitarist (and Louisiana Hall of Fame member) Ted Broussard, singer/ songwriter Marc Broussard was seemingly destined for a life as a music man. His upbringing in Lafayette, Louisiana, instilled in him an affinity for R&B alongside the Cajun trappings of a southern Louisiana. Broussard was barely 20 at the time of his first album’s release. Momentary Setback appeared to encouraging reviews on the independent Rippley Records label in September 2002. Soon afterwards, the young musician inked a deal with Island Def. Jam and he took off from there.
Rebirth Brass Band Hailed by The New York Times as a “New Orleans jazz institution,” Grammy Award winning Rebirth Brass Band has been at the forefront of the brass band revival since they helped to kick it off almost 30 years ago. The band embraces the jazz anchored traditions of the New Orleans signature street bands, while injecting their own brand of booty-shaking funk that creates a calamitous carnival that both recalls a golden age and builds a new and pungently funky sound.

The Local Skank
COURSE BANDS
The Local Skank formed together to create an unique group previously lacking from the New Orleans music scene. With veteran rock musicians to their stylistically different backgrounds, including punk, classical, goth, applachian dance, hip-hop, indie rock, and ska, The Local Skank has worked towards creating their own musical dogma. Naming themselves after their favorite style of dance, The Local Skank has been bringing a distinctive perspective to New Orleans and will continue to do so for as long as they can rock!
Fuzzy Dice
The Fuzzy Dice are a 3 piece band combining great music from the ‘50s and ‘60s, with fun and humor. The band specializes in playing the great rockabilly standards of Elvis, Carl Perkins and Hank Williams, but with a strong mix of classic rock n’ roll and motown. The Fuzzy Dice have been playing South-East Louisiana and the Gulf Coast since 2006.
Funk Pocket
28
The four members of Funk Pocket clicked from the beginning, the music evoking almost immediate comparisons to the complex improvisational spirit of Medeski Martin & Wood and 70’s era Miles Davis, while playing to their individual strengths- Mora’s rock solid, dance-inducing bottom end, Bono’s African-infused free jazz and groove syncopations, Greene’s love of the jam and Nola’s love of jazz blues.

For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.
ADVICE FROM THE ROCK 'N' ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.
1 2 3 4
TRAIN
It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.
HYDRATE
If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz. of sports drink every 20 minutes. For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website.
SALT
Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.
PLEASE
Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars!
If you have questions, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…

20:00 – Get your gear together
Take some time to get all of your gear together; create a race gear checklist that you use for every race.
RACE DAY CHECKLIST
18:00 – Plan for race morning -By Matt Fittzgerald The final two days before a race are very important. Follow this checklist to ensure that you get the most out of the hard training you’ve done.

For example, run three miles easy, then run 6 x 30-second relaxed sprints.
47:00 – Start carbo-loading
Be sure to consume high-carb foods and beverages at every meal.
31:00 – Get a good night’s sleep
Getting adequate sleep is critical the final days before a big race.

34
It relieves mental and physical tension and keeps the body primed for performance.
Make a concrete plan for race morning that includes a wake-up time and a route to the race venue
3:00 – Wake up early
Set an early alarm to give your body plenty of time to get up to speed. Try to climb out of bed at least three hours before the start horn blasts.
2:45 – Eat your pre-race meal
It is important to wake up in plenty of time to consume and digest a high-carb pre-race breakfast three hours before your race start.
2:15 – Make sure your gear is ready
Go through your gear checklist one last time. Be sure not to forget the small essentials such as sunscreen and your race number.
0:30 – Warm up thoroughly
Start your warm-up about half an hour before your race start. Begin with easy jogging, then do some dynamic stretches such as walking lunges and arm circles.
