Dear Resident, London Fashion Week has been and gone, leaving the latest trends trailing in its wake. For those not quite blessed with a gazelle-like model figure, the Fulham Residents’ Journal has gone in search of a few sartorial pointers of its own. The Natasha Coote boutique is the first stop on the style journey, where Lauren Romano gets a masterclass in dressing from owner Natasha on page six. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to work in the fashion industry, turn to page eight. A local lingerie designer and a milliner have opened their diaries to share a typical nine-to-five day. Lauren is also let loose on the fashionista-outlet.com warehouse on Peterborough Road. She talks to founder Myriam Duran about why more and more of us are shopping for designer brands online. Read the interview on page 12. Elsewhere, the second Kensington & Fulham Open Studios takes place this month, as 50 local artists throw open the doors to their studios for residents to explore (page 17). We also go through the keyhole with Parsons Green-based interior architecture and design company Wickenden Hutley. Prepare to be envious of some of its recently transformed properties on page 20.

Have your say on North End Road
Save Charing Cross Hospital Despite years of tireless campaigning, the Accident and Emergency department at Charing Cross Hospital closed last month. The fight is now on to save the hospital itself. Spearheaded by Save Our Hospitals, the campaign group encourages residents to make their voices count by signing the petition, downloading a campaign poster to display in their window, spreading the word on social media (with the hashtag #SaveOurHospitals) or even by donating an hour of their time to man the weekly street stall at Lyric Square.
More than 70 traders, business owners and residents met last month to discuss how to regenerate North End Road, with hot topics including relieving traffic congestion, parking restrictions and the potential to pedestrianise the road on Saturdays. As a result of the meeting, an action group was formed that will work closely with the council to steer future decisions. ‘We need to come together as a community because we all want to see North End Road thrive,’ said Cllr Ben Coleman, adding, ‘It’s clear there is real enthusiasm from everyone involved.’ To join the group or suggest ideas, contact Sue Perrin at sue.perrin@lbhf.gov.uk

Dress to
impress Personal stylist and founder of fashion concierge and boutique Natasha Coote gives Lauren Romano some style pointers on a shopping experience with a difference
‘O
ur door is always open,’ begins Natasha, waving in the direction of the entrance to her chic yet homely boutique, which is, as she suggests, flung back on its hinges. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know your Dolce & Gabbana from your Dior (you won’t find any of that in here anyway – Natasha stocks carefully selected mid-range labels) or are sporting your gym kit, complete with post-exercise magenta-toned cheeks. The stylists aren’t going to make you rack up an exorbitant credit-card bill on clothes that even Kate Moss would struggle to pull off, either. ‘I’d rather a customer buys less than more,’ Natasha begins as I pull up a pew at the large communal table that fills the ground-floor space. ‘High-street shopping dictates that if you don’t hate something then you have to have it; we have the opposite philosophy,’ she reveals. Natasha opened her boutique in March 2013, having outgrown her Fulham home where she first styled friends and offered a concierge service. ‘I spent 11 years in the fashion industry, working with a spectrum of brands. After I had children I realised, like my friends who were previously careerdriven, that my wardrobe had now become irrelevant. So I started to play around with outfits. My client base grew quickly through word of mouth. I like to think it was down to my honest approach. My motto is, if it’s amazing, buy it; if you think it’s OK but you don’t love it, forget about it.’ Today, the boutique offers a personal fashion experience for each and every customer. Natasha has also recently launched an online shop via her website for time-poor customers. In store, all of the team are trained stylists and can offer a full -6-
re-styling service downstairs. ‘When people come in, we engage with them and ask them what their wardrobe is missing, or what items of clothing they struggle to find. Then we pick out one or two outfit ideas for them to try,’ Natasha explains. ‘We never know who is going to walk in next, but it’s up to us to present the character that they want to be. ‘Typically, our customers need to feel comfortable, and they certainly don’t want to walk past someone else on the street wearing the same top – that’s why I stock every garment in just one of each size to minimise the chance of that happening,’ she says as we pass a waiting area for children and husbands or partners,
they get a sense of what it will look like.’ Aside from the excellent mood lighting, the downstairs domain is also perfect for parties, where groups of friends can be styled before sashaying down a temporary catwalk – the room’s plush, sink-into carpet. Natasha tells me styling vouchers make great gifts. ‘We are thinking about creating a pre-hen party package, too. Brides-to-be and their entourage can head to Space NK for a makeover, sit down to a blow-dry at Hari’s and then come here to put together the perfect look for the evening.’ Prior to customers embarking on their style shake-up, Natasha and her team ask them to consider their wardrobe needs by filling in a form. ‘You should buy things with the intention of them having a five-year lifespan,’ she reasons. ‘If you invest in key pieces, such as a good jumper, a silk blouse, a statement coat, tapered trousers, a power dress and a well-fitting pair of jeans, these will form the building blocks of any look.’ Styling sessions can take about two hours, and the boutique has a great track record of loyal shoppers with whom it has built up close relationships. ‘It’s like going to the hairdresser’s without the intimate details,’ Natasha jokes. ‘When customers come in to be styled we want to make sure they escape everyday reality. We can order lunch for them, plus the phone reception isn’t great down here either, which is good!’ Top clients, I learn,
Our customers need to feel comfortable and they certainly don’t want to walk past someone else on the street wearing the same top complete with tea, coffee and iPads. For a complete style overhaul, Natasha encourages her clients to opt for a private styling appointment. This can involve creating a capsule collection, or finding pieces to match those that a customer might already own but have relegated to the back of the wardrobe. ‘We don’t cater for a particular age group: our clients vary from teenage girls on shopping trips with their mum, to 75-year-olds,’ Natasha says as we venture downstairs. Devoid of the natural light that fills the floor above, Natasha has installed a high-tech lighting system to recreate an illumination spectrum that mimics everything from dawn to dusk at the twist of a dial. ‘If someone is shopping for an evening piece we can adjust the light, so that
even receive home visits twice a year to help them do a stock take and draw up a precise shopping list for the season. ‘Fashion is like maths; it’s a combination of measurements and proportions. Once you know the best parts of your body, you can dress for that. Simple things can make a big difference,’ Natasha confides as she talks about plans to cement the boutique further into the community by inviting local bloggers to dress the windows. ‘“Is it private? Do I have to book an appointment to walk through the door? Is there a fee, or a minimum spend?” The answer to all of these is no,’ Natasha smiles. ‘We are most definitely open to everyone.’ 173 New King’s Road, SW6 4SW, 020 7371 7526 (natashacoote.com) -7-

Poppy Sexton-Wainw right hitting the snooze button. If I’m not heading out to see I usually leave the house friends for dinner and drinks, in a mad rush by 7.40am and head to the I slip home at 8pm to cook and have a long gym. I have to tackle the treadmill in the soak in the bath before bed. The last thing morning, as by the end of the day I struggle I do at night is check my emails again – to summon the energy for self-motivation. working with the USA means a lot of our I grab a green juice and a coffee on the customers on that side of the world get in way to the office on Michael Road, where touch throughout the evening. I endeavour I arrive by 9.30am. My day-to-day schedule to catch up on these before I drift off to very much depends on the time of year, but make the morning slightly easier. I’m in bed typically I could be designing or dealing with by 10.30pm. I try to get a good nine the sales or admin side of things; my role is hours at least three times a week incredibly varied. Once I’m settled, I’ll tuck to make up for the weekends into a late-morning snack such as scrambled when I don’t have as much sleep eggs on rye toast, with a cup of green tea to as I would like. give me an energy boost until lunchtime. (beautifulbottoms.com) We tend to schedule meetings around midday – these can cover anything from our sales strategy to a catch-up with our PR agent. I nip out of the office for lunch at 2pm. Megan’s deli around the corner is a personal favourite, especially while we can still cling onto the last rays of sunshine in the lovely garden before autumn sets in.

T
he first thing I do when my alarm goes off at 7.30am is to spring straight for the kettle to make a reviving cup of coffee. I check my diary as I sip it to see whether it’s a scraggyjumper day in the studio or if I have any meetings with clients scheduled, and then I dress accordingly. My job is seasonal, peaking in the spring and summer months and the run-up to Ascot, which is a very busy time for me; I practically live in the studio until it is done and dusted. After Ascot, I concentrate on next year’s collection for Spring/Summer, which I have just finished putting the final touches to. My day usually starts with me responding to emails when I arrive at my studio before I move on to make hats for commissions or collections. Each of my creations is ‘blocked’ over a piece of wood to get the initial shape and then, once it’s set and dry, is removed so I can start to transform it into a wearable headpiece. My studio is based at The Old Gas Works, which is a fairly undiscovered part of Fulham. There are 500 studios in different buildings across the site, which is full of artists, musicians, designers and start-up companies. A big group of us meet for lunch in a building called the Depot, Olivia Roat which has a café. It’s great to have a place to socialise
with neighbours. We might have slightly unconventional jobs, but it’s lovely to retain that traditional office-lunch feel. I started my career in sculpture. My mother and grandfather are both artists and I was always slightly disappointed that I didn’t inherit their talent for drawing. It wasn’t until my mother put some clay in front of me that we realised I could sculpt it to look like the sitter, even if I couldn’t draw them. I think my brain only really works in 3D, which is handy when it comes to making hats. After lunch, I continue working on commissions for the rest of the afternoon – these can range from the traditional to the show-stopping. Dasha Zhukova (Roman Abramovich’s girlfriend) hosted a surrealist ball a while ago and I made a few pieces for that, which included a gilded birdcage and a jewelled ram’s head skull; they were both great fun to create. As my day draws to a close I tidy up and answer a few more emails and then, if I’m lucky, I pop into The Rose pub next to the studio for a quick glass of wine before I head home for supper and lights out at 11pm. arch began its couture crusade on the Fulham Road two years ago this month. Since then, the boutique has chartered the notoriously choppy sartorial waters with confidence under the expert eye of owner Liza Mitchell. Liza goes to great lengths to source the right brands for her clientele, selecting sought-after labels that are flattering and wearable alongside a number of new and under-the-radar designers. ‘As a boutique owner I have to strike the right balance; our customers want a nod to the trends, whilst at the same time getting maximum wear out of their purchases,’ she explains. ‘My varied collection of labels defines the boutique,’ she says. ‘Equipment and Mercy Delta do perfect prints and quality silk tops and T-shirts; Majestic stands out
for its exceptional quality jersey wear and Cocoa Cashmere makes beautiful knits that start from £135. Great labels don’t have to cost the earth,’ she assures. ‘Max Mara has always been my go-to for winter coats, and I am one of the few stockists of Marella and Pennyblack, which are two of its brands.’ In her carefully-curated Autumn/Winter 2014 collection Liza has taken this season’s catwalk trends and made them wearable for all occasions. Those in need of a little inspiration should read her style pointers below. It’s time to banish the bobbly jumpers to the back of the wardrobe. 821 Fulham Road, SW6 5HG, 020 3638 0204 (marchfashion.co.uk) Open Monday-Saturday, 10am-6pm. Culture crawl
From a houseboat to a food store, creations by local artists are popping up in unusual places this month. Lauren Romano goes on an artistic tour with the founder of Kensington & Fulham Open Studios Lucy Beaumont white cube gallery environment can have an unnerving effect on even the most clued-up culture vultures. Rather than feel compelled to do her best Brian Sewell impression, Lucy Beaumont is on a mission to change people’s perceptions of viewing and buying art. The second instalment of the Kensington & Fulham Open Studios (KFOS) returns this October after its début last year. Over two consecutive weekends (10-12 and 17-19 October), artists from across the area will invite members of the public into their homes and studios to see where their work is created. ‘I want to make art more approachable,’ Lucy explains. ‘Visitors get to meet local artists, have a chat about the process that goes into their craft and buy directly from them. Galleries can be intimidating at times, but by displaying art in unusual places we are trying to take away the fear factor. We also want to remind people of just how many artists live and work on their doorstep,’ she adds. This month, 55 artists, from jewellers and potters to painters and sculptors will take part. Lucy is a long-time champion of local creativity. Beginning her career as an administrator for the Impressionist department at Sotheby’s, she joined the arts events team at Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham. It wasn’t until she was given the daunting task of coordinating the Richmond Open Studies that she was truly bitten by the creative bug. ‘Soon after that my Mum and I ran a pop-up shop in an empty premises in
Suchi Chidambaram London I, oil on canvas
Hogarth Place. It was the run-up to Christmas, and we had invited a number of artists and artisans to sell their prints and jewellery. I enjoyed seeing how people could interact in a more informal setting,’ she tells me. Having grown up in Hammersmith, Lucy knew the area well and was already familiar with many of the established artists’ organisations. ‘At the time, my mum was taking part in an open studios event in Hammersmith. She had to show her work at a friend’s house as her home was just outside of the catchment area. “Don’t worry, Mum,” I said jokingly one day. “We’ll put on an open studio of our own”.’ As it transpired, KFOS was born last autumn. This year’s event has doubled in size, but despite the growth spurt, Lucy feels that there is still room for improvement. ‘I want to get more day centres and charities involved,’ she tells me. ‘I’m hoping to secure some funding to host workshops with these groups.’ With 30 cultural stops punctuating the KFOS map, residents who are at a loss as to where to start might find the event’s taster exhibition helpful. It will be held at the Chelsea Gallery above Chelsea Town Hall from 7-19 October, and each artist taking part will be displaying one piece so that visitors get a feel for their work. ‘Everything kicks off in the art world in October,’ says Lucy. ‘Frieze and the Affordable Arts Fair might be taking place this month, but Kensington and Fulham has its own arts party going on!’

Through the keyhole Interior designers Charlie Wickenden and Melissa Hutley of Wickenden Hutley talk Lauren Romano through their portfolio
T
he BBC’s early noughties home- improvement series Changing Rooms has a lot to answer for. Not only did it unleash the flamboyant Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen into the homes of the unsuspecting public, the show’s MDFobsessed handymen began a DIY epidemic. Fast-forward to today and while the medium density fibreboard might have made a hasty exit via the log burner, an interior designer’s trademark stamp can still stick out like a sore thumb. Having worked for several years in the industry, this is a predicament that Charlie Wickenden and Melissa Hutley are familiar with.
apartment or a second home on the coast, no property is off limits for the dynamic duo (and that includes ski chalets in Verbier and a hotel in Barbados, I learn). ‘Our clients are the starting point for any design,’ says Charlie ‘Who they are, what they do and how they use the space is where we draw inspiration. Having said that, the layout of a room has to work practically and ergonomically, that’s why we love being involved from the interior architecture point of view.’ This attention to detail comes down to the very last table lamp. ‘When we do a lighting plan we have to take into account the furniture layout; if you have two armchairs with a lamp,
Our clients are the starting point for any design. Who they are, what they do and how they use the space is where we draw inspiration ‘Having 10 years’ combined experience we noticed a number of other interior design companies doing similiar things. Sometimes the end result looked like a showroom; it was too good to be true and everything was coordinated,’ Melissa begins. ‘We wanted to do things differently from everyone else. The home is supposed to be a personal realm; we always aim to ensure our clients’ needs are listened to and that a sense of personality shines through,’ she continues. With a wealth of interior design knowledge behind them, Charlie and Melissa founded Wickenden Hutley in May 2013. Together, the pair offers both interior architecture and interior design services and can take care of everything from the flooring and lighting to the door handles and cushions. Whether you have a palatial new-build pad, a contemporary
you’ll need a floor box and then a rug that’s going to cover it,’ Melissa adds. ‘You need to have an idea of what the room is going to be like to ensure that everything works correctly.’ Based in Parsons Green, the team appreciates the local contacts and design hub that they have on their doorstep; they also understand the fabric and feel of period properties in the surrounding streets. ‘When you work for yourself, you care about everything so much – there isn’t a moment when you switch off,’ Charlie explains. The pair’s passion for delivering homes that will not only stand the test of time but also work for their owners is palpable, and all without a hint of MDF in sight. 2 Swan Mews, SW6 4QT, 020 7731 2996 (wickendenhutley.com) - 20 -
Townhouse, Fulham ‘This is actually my house,’ [Melissa]. ‘I’m half Peruvian so I love bright and bold colours. My husband and I received this 16th-century Italian trunk as a wedding gift – it’s one of those amazing antiques that you can always find a home for, even in a contemporary space. The open-plan ground-floor layout means you can see down the hall to the Photos/ Helen C garden as soon as you open the door, so athcart you need a focal point. We wanted to create an extension of the living space outside with the sofas and fire pit to make a place where we could sit and socialise with friends comfortably rather than round a more formal table and chairs.’

Penthouse, West Hampstead ‘This is a grand-scale bachelor pad. The client wanted to create a contemporary space but with character, warmth and texture. The room boasts impressive proportions, but in its former incarnation the space was not being used to its full potential. We created
symmetry by having the sofas opposite each other. Traditionally, period properties were focused around the fireplace, but if you don’t have a fireplace it’s good to find another architectural feature to focus things on; in this instance, we centred the room around the window.’
Garden flat, Parsons Green ‘This client wanted a more homely bachelor pad, so we added splashes of colour to inject a bit of fun and warmth. The end result balances clean lines with a cosy feel. The shelves in the kitchen open up the room and lend a contemporary feel, which is practical and stylish.’ - 22 -

The gift of giving Sarah Turnbull of Simply Wedding Gifts shuns the tea towels and wine glasses on the traditional wedding list with her roundup of stand-out-from-the-crowd presents
Art to offer couples the option of having a drawing done of the church or venue they got married in. This is such a special gift for any couple and something they will take with them wherever they live as a constant reminder of their wonderful day.
When and why did you found Simply Wedding Gifts? My husband and I got married last year and signed up to a wedding-list company that offers a similar service to Simply Wedding Gifts. We felt let down by bad customer service and I realised there was room for a new gift-list company with a modern take on the traditional idea. You only get married once, so we want to make sure that the gift-list experience is simple, fun and hassle-free.
What distinguishes Simply Wedding Gifts from other gift lists? Our simple and easy-to-use website enables couples to log in and edit their account. They can write their thank-you cards online too, and we will print them free of charge. Most importantly, we offer a traditional gift-list service with a modern twist. There are other companies and large department stores that offer similar gift lists, but many people who use their service discover they have the same dinner set or glasses as their friends, which they find frustrating. Our model is different because we can order any product offered by our suppliers rather than a select few items chosen by a merchandiser.
What products are most popular? The traditional Le Creuset casserole pot is very popular, and almost every couple will add one to their list. We have also noticed a demand for high-end electricals, in particular juicers and blenders (we have even heard that there is a national shortage of juicers at the moment). Interestingly though, our bespoke line of gifts has attracted a huge amount of attention. Do you stock any unusual gifts? We have teamed up with Amelia Anderson

What the
doctor ordered
Annabel Streets and Susan Saunders, founders of food website Kale & Cocoa, talk about their healthy ageing philosophy
Susan and Annab
el
T
he Kale & Cocoa mantra is: eat well, age well. It’s a motto that holds particular pertinence for founders Annabel and Susan. ‘Susan’s mother and my grandmother were both diagnosed with early onset dementia,’ Annabel begins over a cup of green tea at Poppy’s Place. After meeting in the playground of their daughters’ nursery, Annabel tells me how the pair soon discovered that they shared a mutual love of all things culinary and collectively had more cookery books than Delia has cake tins. ‘It was some time later, however, that we realised we both had similar experiences of dementia in our families,’ Annabel continues.
There is a lot of conflicting information out there regarding which foods harm and heal ‘I watched my mother nurse my grandmother, like I now care for her. I don’t want to end up like that – I don’t want my children to have to be part of the same cruel cycle,’ says Susan. ‘My mother has suffered with dementia for 12 years now. If there is something, anything I can do to reduce my risk, I will,’ she explains, defiantly. Spurred on by this determination, Annabel and Susan set up Kale & Cocoa earlier this year. The website is a collection of recipes, alongside the latest nutrition news. Inspiration comes in the form of meals that can be enjoyed by all the family and, what’s more, they don’t require a Nigella Lawson-style pantry of somewhat obscure ‘essentials’. The recipes’ carefully chosen ingredients address a raft of health concerns – from dementia to a sluggish immune system. But that’s not all; the Fulham-based duo also follows the latest medical research into degenerative diseases which they summarise
for their readers. ‘There is a lot of conflicting information out there regarding which foods harm and heal. We trawl through the findings each week and try to act as a filter,’ says Annabel. The statistics have swayed in Kale & Cocoa’s favour from the beginning: The same week that the website was launched, Public Health England acknowledged for the first time that a healthy lifestyle is a factor in reducing the risk of dementia. ‘Healthy living policies devised by the government and doctors had up until then targeted diet as a means of reducing the risk of heart disease, strokes and cancer. Now dementia has finally been added to that list,’ Susan points out. ‘But we don’t want to drown people in science,’ she adds. ‘We want to encourage them to try new ingredients. Our children are our guinea pigs,’ she laughs. After all, whipping up a green juice in the morning is all very well and good if you are a supermodel like Miranda Kerr, but Annabel and Susan are realistic: ‘It’s a very different battle to eat healthily when you have a family; an eight-year-old is not going to eat a pulverised kale Slush Puppy,’ Susan smiles. With plans for a Fulham supper club and even a cookery book on the radar, Annabel and Susan hope to spread the word about the Kale & Cocoa philosophy. ‘Not for all the goji berries in China would we turn the clock back to our angst-ridden teens or our penniless twenties,’ they chime. ‘We love our forties and have every intention of loving our fifties, sixties, seventies and beyond.’ Why not join them on their pro-ageing journey? Slow-roasted salmon with butternut squash & barley (Serves six)
Cranachan with sloe gin & autumn raspberries
350g approx. butternut squash, peeled and cubed (about half a large one) Pinch of chilli flakes, to taste 2tsp ground cumin 2tsp dried thyme 2 oranges – 1 orange zest grated and juiced; the other sliced into thin discs
(Serves six)
3 x 180g punnets of raspberries 3tbsp sloe gin/vodka (replace with 3tbsp sugar or agave if preferred) 200g jumbo porridge oats 2tbsp chopped hazelnuts 800g Greek yoghurt 3/4 cup honey or agave
6tbps olive or avocado oil 1.2kg salmon fillet 300g pearl barley, cooked as per packet instructions 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 tbps flat-leaf parsley, chopped 2tbps pomegranate seeds or dried cranberries Squeeze of lemon juice
1. Pre-heat the oven to 190C. Combine oil with cumin, thyme, orange zest, chilli and season well. Toss the butternut cubes with 1-2tbps of the flavoured oil and roast in the hot oven for around 40 minutes. 2. Arrange the orange slices on the bottom of a large roasting tin and lay the salmon fillet on top. Coat the salmon with a tablespoon or so of the oil mix and pour over the orange juice. 3. When the butternut is nearly done, turn the oven down to 120C and put the salmon on the top shelf. It will need 30-40 minutes depending on how thick your fillet is – you want it just cooked. This slow-roasting method keeps the salmon beautifully juicy, so don’t overcook it. 4. Stir the crushed garlic and a squeeze of lemon into the remaining flavoured oil. When the barley is cooked, drain and stir in the oil mix, parsley, pomegranate or cranberries and butternut. Serve the salmon with barley and steamed greens. The salmon is very soft and moist – we serve this family style for a casual supper, straight from the roasting pan with the orange slices and pan juices.
1. Take half the raspberries and mash with the sloe gin/vodka or sugar – set aside to make a sauce. 2. Toast the oats and chopped hazelnuts in a dry frying pan over a moderate heat until golden and fragrant, stirring constantly. Be careful not to let them burn. Allow to cool. 3. In clear bowls or glasses, layer the Greek yogurt, the toasted oats, whole raspberries and raspberry sauce. Drizzle with honey and garnish with whole raspberries. This also makes a delicious breakfast (preferably without the sloe gin or vodka!)

Y
ou will be smack-in-the-face surprised if you charge into a TRX Suspension Training session at Transition Zone with the idea that it’ll be a breeze because you sometimes go for a jog. That attitude is the exercise equivalent of thinking that you could run a Michelin-starred kitchen because you can cook two omelettes at the same time. For those who don’t know, TRX combines straps and body weights to give a full-on workout. Muscles previously – and happily – dormant will suddenly be shaken awake during a session, before retiring again the next day and rendering any small movement completely agonising. It was early on a Thursday morning as I gripped the handles of the straps that were fastened tightly to a metal frame, unaware of what was about to happen to me. I leaned forward, pressing down on the straps and supporting all of my weight on my arms. The studio was filled with
the sound of pumping music, and eventually the beat was interspersed with grunting and frantic blowingout of air from my puce, grimacing face. ‘This is so tough!’ I exclaimed to gym owner Claire Finlay, whose stamina and strength implied that she is secretly superhuman. ‘That’s just the warm-up,’ she smiled.
I staggered to Parsons Green tube station with loose limbs After my arms, chest, back and stomach muscles had been tied to a chair, slapped around, covered in freezing water and forced to give everything up, the workout moved onto the interrogation of my legs. ‘Put your foot into the handle of the strap,’ Super Claire instructed. I fumbled around for a while, attempting not to embarrass myself any more than I already had. Claire - 33 -
had to come over and help me and, as she did so, I tried to work out whether I felt like a very elderly person or a young child who couldn’t tie up his laces. A little bit of both, I decided. The leg workout was spectacularly thorough and, with a mixture of hopping, jumping and stretching, Claire made sure that I wouldn’t be able to walk properly for a while. Indeed, as I left the studio I was immediately accepted into Monty Python’s Ministry of Silly Walks as I staggered to Parsons Green tube station with loose limbs. The TRX session was painful, but also, surprisingly, an enjoyable way to exercise my entire body. The mixture of different routines kept monotony at bay and Claire’s encouragement ensured that I didn’t give up. After all, as they say, no pain, no gain. 17 Heathman’s Road, Parsons Green, SW6 4TJ, 020 7736 2070 (transitionzone.co.uk)

David Brough reports on the launch of the Chelsea Cross Design Destination
M
ore than 20 Fulham Road showrooms, specialising in bespoke home interiors, have joined forces to brand themselves the Chelsea Cross Design Destination. All of the showrooms have an interest in design for the home, and many cater for a mix of interior designers and private clients. There are also a number of antiques dealers who offer rare pieces of furniture from the 18th century as well as 20th-century vintage pieces. The showrooms are launching Chelsea Cross this year, with breakfast gatherings and Champagne evenings to promote their latest collections.
The showrooms wanted to come together to brand themselves as a unique destination The finishing touches will soon be put to the Chelsea Cross Design Destination website, which will be regularly updated with news from all participants. The inspiration for Chelsea Cross, located in an area close to the crossroads of Fulham Road and Onslow Gardens, came from Isabelle Beresford Peyman, general manager at the fine furniture manufacturer Philippe Hurel, which specialises in unique pieces, tailor-made to clients’ specifications. ‘The showrooms wanted to come together to brand themselves as a unique destination for

exquisite and custommade design for the home,’ Isabelle explains. The Chelsea Cross showrooms include Robert Dickson & Lesley Rendall, which sells extraordinary 20thcentury French and Italian furniture from the 1930s to the 1970s, as well as lighting, mirrors and - 34 -
specially chosen paintings. ‘Chelsea Cross is a cool destination where people can find exquisite taste in antique and vintage pieces of the highest quality,’ says Lesley, a member of The British Antique Dealers’ Association (BADA). Another participant, de Gournay, creates elegant hand-painted wallpapers, as well as fabrics, porcelain and hand-carved furniture. Using the finest quality silks, papers

and materials, de Gournay’s highly skilled artists meticulously create every design in-house. ‘My furniture has a contemporary feel and understated glamour,’ says Julian Chichester, owner of the eponymous showroom that also features in the line-up. Inside the premises, a stunning range of furniture and lighting awaits. What strikes me about this meeting of minds is that each participant
brings its own style and personality to Chelsea Cross, providing the customer with a great deal of choice. As my tour continues I come across Beaumont & Fletcher – the ‘Savile Row of upholstery’, and a designer of exquisite fabrics. ‘Our sofas and chairs are made in the same way as Victorian handmade furniture,’ owner John Crowell assures me as I pass through. A short walk away, I pop into Valerie Wade to admire contemporary mirrored dressing tables, handcrafted in England, Art Deco lighting by French designers, Syrian cabinets with mother-of-pearl inlay, as well as modern and contemporary art and photographs. ‘I only buy items for my shop that I would have in my own home. My focus is very much driven by fashion,’ Valerie says. Chelsea Cross’s strong focus on furniture is spearheaded by Apter-Fredericks, specialist in the finest 18th-century antiques. ‘Apter-Fredericks is one of a very small handful of international
dealers that specialises in furniture of this quality,’ says Alice Freyman, who has joined brothers Guy and Harry Apter in developing the business. Fast-forward to the 21st century and contemporary designs for the home are showcased by McCarron & Co, which creates custom-made furniture. McCarron conducts a thorough design consultation in the home, to ensure that furniture fits perfectly with a client’s lifestyle. ‘We listen to what the client has to say. We don’t just meet their brief, we surpass it,’ says creative director Mark Brook. With these experts on board, it won’t be long before Chelsea Cross Design Destination puts itself on the map. Most excitingly, you can also sample these dishes yourself at the test kitchen before picking up the latest edition of The Books for Cooks Cookery Book. SUPER SEWER IN SOUTH FULHAM APPROVED
DATE RECEIVED: 17 September ADDRESS: New King’s Road PROPOSAL: Change of use of first floor from office to a selfcontained flat.
Thames Water has received planning permission for a controversial £4.2billion super sewer in Carnwath Road, South Fulham. The plans have been criticised by Hammersmith and Fulham Council and many residents who are concerned that the construction of a 15-mile tunnel beneath the Thames will cause eight years of disruption. The project is part of the government’s solution to the increasingly bad sewage pollution in the river. Many residents are unhappy at the prospect of being subject to noise, dust and air pollution, which will reportedly affect homes and five schools within 700 metres of the site.

There was a jazz festival taking place recently and there are a number of brilliant bars, not to mention The Blue Elephant, which was a local institution when it was based at Fulham Broadway.’ Sylvie cites the river taxi from the jetty at Imperial Wharf that runs all the way to Embankment as her preferred mode of transport into the city. Back on terra firma, she is also a champion of some of the traditionally more overlooked corners of the area. ‘People might still have misconceptions about Sands End, but it’s got a lot going on, including a new development. Plus The Sands End pub serves the best scotch eggs ever!’ Another region Sylvie wants people to reconsider is around North End Road. ‘I’ll take tenants to their preferred area first, but if they want better value for money, we’ll head that way and I’ll tell them to keep an open

They regularly re-value properties, even if they have only just returned to the market after a few months, to report back any concerns to the landlord that could hinder its letting power. ‘Prices have stayed stable over the last year, but if we get a huge surge of property, values will soften,’ Sylvie reveals. ‘At the moment, however, we’re receiving multiple bids and achieving above the asking price. The market doesn’t stand still, it’s very competitive.’ Slow and steady definitely does not win this particular race. 103-105 Moore Park Road, SW6 2DA, 020 7736 9822 (marshandparsons.co.uk) - 47 -

this is something Mary takes with a pinch of salt. ‘Yes, there is a lot of movement in Fulham, but in terms of rentals people do renew and renew their tenancies for several years; many renters go on to buy here, too. ‘Yesterday I met a lady who bought her house on Chipstead Street in 1983. It was sold to her by the original owner, who purchased it for £400 back in the early 1900s when it was first built. She was reminiscing about how much Fulham has metamorphosed. She told me she used to live in a bedsit on Elvaston Place with a shared bathroom and tights hanging over the banisters. There aren’t many properties like that around south-west London now – her daughter is renting a smart studio flat from us.’ With 40 per cent of the Fulham office’s tenancies achieving more than £1,000 a week over the last six

‘E
ighty per cent of our tenants over the last six months have been corporate clients,’ Mary begins, sharing the latest data, hot from the Knight Frank research reports. ‘And a substantial amount of those tenancies have started in the last three months,’ she adds. Having been involved in the London lettings business for the last 17 years, Mary joined the Knight Frank office in June, just in time for the busy summer rental market. ‘Recently we have let a number of houses in the Peterborough and Moore Park Estates, working with either the Knight Frank corporate department or relocation agents coming to us directly,’ she reflects. The influx of temporary renters, moving in to do business and then moving out again, might give the impression of a transient market, but
months, tenants at this level expect a high standard of finish. ‘We let a house on the Moore Park Estate recently for £2,950 a week. It was newly refurbished throughout, which certainly helped.’ Mary reveals that the autumn months are all about ensuring that they have the correct type of properties to match tenant demand, in addition to educating landlords on the importance of presentation. ‘Here at Knight Frank we are very fortunate as we have our own interiors department which furnish and dress properties to present to the market. You need to give people vision – a property that is beautifully presented will rent quickly.’ As for the year ahead, Mary predicts that the market will remain strong. ‘We’ve seen a burst of interest for family homes in Fulham, which confirms its appeal as a desirable area. It’s a healthy market,’ she concludes with a smile. ‘Everyone wants a piece of Fulham.’
