BATTERSEA
A taste of Cornwall A salty tang on the breeze instantly recalls the sandy white beaches and quaint ports of the Cornish coast. Sat Bains’ (not to be confused with the Michelin-starred, Nottingham-based chef) new restaurant venture on Battersea Rise has dedicated itself to transporting you to Cornwall through its menu alone. Cornish Tiger, a self-confessed ‘fine casual dining restaurant’, focuses on organic produce, sourced, where possible, from Cornwall. Chefs Netish Nunnan and Andrew Banyon from the Hurlingham Club and Roast will be cooking up a storm in the kitchen, serving dishes such as sweet chilli and tamarind swordfish with carrot and coriander spaghetti and tigerseasoned sirloin steak. We are salivating at the mere thought.

Fashion focus Pop down to the Pump House Gallery in Battersea Park from 25 April to peruse the sartorial offerings of five young fashion hopefuls from the borough. As part of the Mayor of Wandsworth Cllr Angela Graham’s Youth Fashion Wandsworth competition, 45 15-19-year-olds entered their designs, and a shortlist of 10 presented to judges from the fashion industry. The five winners will all make their designs from scratch, with support from Fashion Enter Ltd, which supports the garment industry as a centre for skills development.

Road restrictions A consultation is now under way to ascertain whether 20 mph speed limits in certain neighbourhoods in Balham and Tooting would be welcomed by residents. The council has sent a detailed questionnaire to every home in the Bedford and Furzedown wards, prompting opinions on the proposed limits after local people submitted petitions to the town hall asking for speed restrictions on the roads in the two areas.
Residents can submit proposals or petitions or obtain more information by emailing highwaysconsultancy@wandsworth.gov.uk

Birds and the bees Community spirit was felt by all on 8 March when MP Jane Ellison and Cllr Shirley Cosgrave joined 85 volunteers at Eagle Pond on Clapham Common to officially begin an exciting biodiversity project. The group all pitched in planting trees and shrubs around the pond before a brass trio played a few tunes to spur on the group. Although the pond has been a popular fishing spot for many years, the surrounding area has long been neglected. The Friends of Clapham Common identified the spot and, together with
Trees for Cities, raised the funding to enable a range of landscape and planting improvements. Wetland-loving trees, such as alder and willow, have been planted, along with silver birch plus an insect and amphibian refuge has been constructed inside one of the banks.
On Saturday 1 June, FCC will be planting the wetland and marginal plants and would like to see as many volunteers as possible. For more information, visit claphamcommon.org
The green light Intelligent technology exists all around us, but something new is about to hit the streets of Balham. The first ‘intelligent’ pedestrian crossing in the world is due to be introduced at the busy junctions outside Balham and Tooting Bec tube stations, the Evening Standard has reported. Pedestrian Scoot (Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique) uses video cameras to detect how many people are in a virtual box and then uses this information to allow pedestrians to disperse before cars are given the green light. Here’s to no more pandemonium when crossing busy roads. -5-

The only way to travel Major improvements to Wandsworth’s riverbus services are enabling more and more local commuters to travel via the Thames to work. As the announcement that the Putney to Blackfriars route has seen a 130 per cent increase in passenger numbers since its re-launch in April 2013, the town hall has plans to secure new passenger piers at Plantation Wharf and Battersea Power Station. Cllr Russell King, Wandsworth’s transport spokesman, highlights the bright and well-connected future of Wandsworth: ‘The Northern Line Extension is on course to bring the Tube to Battersea by 2020 and looking further ahead the proposed Crossrail 2 scheme will connect Tooting Broadway and Clapham Junction to the underground network. We are also making the case for a new direct rail link to Heathrow, the removal of the Wandsworth gyratory and new bus connections for Roehampton.’ Fingers crossed, practical plans are carried out without further delay.
In bloom From his bower nestled amongst the borough’s flora, the council’s environment spokesman, Cllr Jonathan Cook (right), proudly proclaims: ‘Each spring I’m impressed by the fantastic display of flowers as our parks come into bloom… The parks service team and grounds maintenance contractor Quadron have excelled themselves and I hope our residents enjoy the results of their hard work.’ Over the winter months, staff in the council’s parks department planted 109,000 spring-flowering bulbs, so enjoy the blossoming flora around the borough this spring.

A walk in the park We all know that a stroll through the park is good for our health, but the pupils and teachers of Newton Prep recently proved that it could be excellent for the wellbeing of others as well. On 31 March, the school took part in a sponsored walk around Battersea Park to raise money for the children’s charity Kids Company, which was founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996. The charity provides practical, emotional and educational support to inner city children in London and Bristol, its ethos and aims matching the values of many people within the Newton Prep community. The headmistress, Alison Fleming says: ‘We want to be a school that shows a strong sense of the community beyond our own walls. There is something very powerful about children raising money to help other children who live no more than minutes away from their school.’

Emanuel School’s pupils celebrate a momentous birthday
The children of 345 Nursery have been hard at work fundraising for children in Malawi, Liberia and Haiti who have just started school. The pupils of the Wandsworth nursery filled backpacks with everyday school items and clothes that are often taken for granted as part of the Mary’s Meals Backpack Project, founded in 2002 by
Hilary Wright. The charity attracts children to schools by providing a daily meal. The parents also got involved and the PTA hosted a cake sale to raise additional funds for the Mary’s Meals project. Well done 345 Nursery!

To celebrate the World Wide Web’s 25th anniversary, students and teachers at Emanuel School explored the origins of this life-changing concept. The school, located on Battersea Rise, enjoyed talks from Channel 5 News and discussed one of its most famous alumni, founder of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

Fast track Already several furlongs along the road to success, Wandsworth Prep School is excited to announce that it is due to launch a Year 3 class this September, a full year ahead of schedule. The school, which opened its doors in 2012, currently has a Reception and Year 1 class and is introducing the additional year group to coincide with the existing Year 1 children moving up into Year 2. Jessica Wilson, who has taught at the school since September 2013, will lead the new class in their innovative, ‘inquiry-based’ learning. The school prides itself on its use of iPads to aid teaching methods, as well as taking children back to nature with outdoor ‘Forest School’ lessons all year round. Families interested in the school’s Year 3 class are invited to attend a forthcoming Open Event, which will be taking place from 9am-10.30am on Tuesday 29 April.

Free for all Henry Hopwood-Phillips interviews The Spectator’s associate editor, Toby Young, who’s made a name for himself founding the West London Free School (WLFS)
W
hat do you feel the problem is with the current English education system? The biggest problem is that too many state schools aren’t fit for purpose. The number of children at failing comprehensives has fallen by 250,000 under this government but, according to the league tables, 117,000 children are still at inadequate schools. In 2009, Sheffield University carried out a survey which discovered that more than a fifth of school-leavers are functionally illiterate and functionally innumerate. That’s a scandal. What is the long-term solution, in your opinion? More choice, fewer barriers to entry for new providers, more partnerships between good schools and bad ones, more and better teachers (particularly maths and physics teachers), improved teacher training, more emphasis on “tough” subjects, better public exams and a more traditional approach to teaching. Are you in favour of UKIP Leader Nigel Farage’s proposal to repeal the law prohibiting the creation of new grammar schools in England? Yes. There is a huge amount of demand for places at grammar schools and I don’t see why parents of clever children should be denied that choice just because they don’t live near one of the remaining 164. Having said that, I don’t think building new grammar schools is the answer. For instance, there’s little evidence that grammar schools have much overall impact on social mobility. The main beneficiaries of grammar schools are children who are already quite well off to begin with. You’re famous for starting the West London Free School, a school that shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt described as ‘a vanity project for yummy mummies in West London’. What’s the raison d’etre of the ‘free school’ and why has it been greeted with such vitriol? Its mission is to provide children with a - 14 -
If free schools are rubbish, as the critics claim, how can they be benefitting the pushy middle-classes at the same time? classical liberal education, regardless of income, ability or faith. That sort of education is widely available in the independent sector, but in the state sector it’s confined to a handful of schools, most of them virtually impossible to get in to. My over-arching aim is to make a traditional academic education available more widely in the state sector. Opponents of free schools believe that more choice will inevitably lead to greater social segregation because only wealthy, middle-class parents will choose to send their children to them. Setting up free schools is just a way of giving more to the “haves”, not help the “have nots”. Alternatively – and without being aware that they’re contradicting themselves – they argue that because free schools are less subject to state control they will inevitably provide a sub-standard education. So far neither of those things has proved to be true of the West London Free School. About 25 per cent of the children are on free school meals and the school was ranked “Good” by Ofsted last year. Many won’t know the difference between Tony Blair’s academies and Michael Gove’s free schools. Could you clarify? Legally, they’re identical. The critical difference today is that if an existing school converts to academy status, then it’s “an academy”, whereas if a new academy is set up it’s a “free school”, whether it’s set up by a group of parents and teachers, like the West London Free School, or a multiacademy trust like ARK.
Free schools have been accused of leaving education too under regulated (Al-Madinah and several schools in Saltley, Birmingham, for instance have either been very poor schools and/or open to abuse). How would you answer this charge? Free schools and academies have to comply with marginally fewer rules than local authority-run schools – and I mean “marginally” – but they’re no less regulated. The schools are directly accountable to the Secretary of State and are inspected by Ofsted. Indeed, it’s because they’re regulated in this way that the secondary bit of the Al-Madinah School has been shut down and the King Science Academy in Birmingham is currently under investigation. It’s important to bear in mind that these schools are exceptions. Of the first wave of free schools to be inspected by Ofsted, 75 per cent were ranked “Good” or “Outstanding”, which is higher than the national average. Free Schools have also been accused of creaming the best state pupils from the system and benefiting the ‘pushy middleclasses’. What do you think? If free schools are rubbish, as the critics claim, how can they be benefitting the pushy middle-classes at the same time? As I say, we have a broad social mix at the West London Free School. It’s a comprehensive in the true sense of the word. Much of the controversy that surrounds free schools seems to revolve around
statistic wars/methodologies used to compute intellectual excellence. Is this really kulturkampf in disguise? Yes, mainly. I think the left-wing politicians, bureaucrats, education “experts” and trade union officials who control England’s public education system will stop at nothing to preserve the status quo. What are the WLFS’ greatest challenges and greatest successes? The greatest challenge was finding a suitable permanent site. As for our successes, these all come down to the pupils. The most heartening thing about the whole project is seeing how well children respond to the model we’ve put in place: small class sizes, strong discipline, a house system, mandatory Latin, extra-curricular activities. We call it a “comprehensive grammar” and the children seem really happy. Their biggest achievements are in music and sport, where we rival the best independent schools in the area. Our boys’ under-14 hockey team recently beat the boys’ under-14s at Dulwich College and 66 per cent of the children at the school are studying a musical instrument. Last summer’s production of Oliver! was also incredible. Is the purpose of an education to ensure pupils get jobs or to create a well-rounded person at the end of it? The purpose of a good education is to enable all children grow to their full stature, regardless of background or ability. I believe in education for education’s sake. n

The reason for such a merry reception being a discussion about a new secondary school and sixth form that will sit at the heart of the community. Simon Uttley and the Saint John Bosco College will move premises to north Battersea and purpose-built facilities in 2015. Teacher talk Education experts shared their valued insights into the world of learning and academia
The changing face of tutoring by Joanne Kashmina, academic director, Carfax Private Tutors
F
or centuries tutoring has played a central role in our educational landscape, but over recent years it has diversified from being the preserve of the ultra-wealthy and has created its own particular niche within the educational system in London and elsewhere in the UK. Governesses and tutors with exceptional educational backgrounds and good families were once highly sought-after – and indeed still are – for well paid residential roles with families in the UK and abroad. Just like aristocrats in the early 20th century, the wealthy elite across the world today are increasingly seeking well-educated British tutors to work full-time with their children, providing all-round academic mentoring and preparing children long-term for places at the most prestigious educational institutions in the world. However, the private tutoring sector has developed in more ways than one in recent years to become a more common commodity in both upper and middle-class households. Pupils of private tutors are not exclusively educated at private schools any more, as a reported rise in pupils from the state education system over the past year demonstrates. A section of the state system,
indeed, is now turning to private tutors to provide extra individual support to pupils on the Pupil Premium scheme. Whilst tutoring has long been associated largely with revision and exam cramming, modern parents and students now look for longer-term, less targetoriented top-up tuition to give them more focused academic support. In our increasingly competitive education system, tutoring is a way for pupils and students to get that extra edge over their classmates, by taking up a new interest, skill, hobby or subject. Language tuition, for example, is extremely popular, not just amongst children, but adults too, and university students looking to broaden their interests. Over the past year, there has been a considerable rise in enquiries for more unusual foreign languages such as Russian, Arabic and Mandarin, while interest in major European foreign languages remains strong. The age range for tutoring services has expanded, with a greater number of undergraduate and postgraduate students now looking for top-up tuition in their university subject, as well as in more niche areas such as essay and dissertation writing skills or interview preparation. An increase in demand for more specialist subjects, including law, biomedical science and agricultural management has been noticed since 2012. The scope of exam preparation, too, has dramatically widened – formerly revolving around common entrance exams, GCSEs and A levels, the increasing competition - 18 -
from international students has seen the emergence of a series of subject-specific entrance exams for Oxbridge and other top universities for over-subscribed courses. The A-level also has competition now from the IB (International Baccalaureate) and the Cambridge Pre-U, and pupils are increasingly requesting tuition support for international exams such as the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) or ACT (American College Test), to enable them to study in the USA. The increasing prevalence of online tuition has meant that tuition can take place with expert British tutors for pupils anywhere in the world, preparing for a whole host of new exams, from language-specific IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exams, to the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test). Tutoring is for the first time a service available to a much broader socio-economic group. These people want to help their children (and themselves) get a leg-up in the competitive school and university arenas of today, where good grades are no longer the be all and end all. This more so than anything else is the key: good grades are no longer the crucial factor in identifying the great pupils in a group. You need to show a wider spectrum of interests and a broadened intellectual curiosity these days – not only in education, but later in life when looking for jobs as well. Good tutoring is not merely about preparing to get the best grades, but about opening a pupil’s mind to academia, boosting a pupil’s confidence in subjects, and encouraging intellectual curiosity. n

Self-confidence and the importance of drama Natalie Keane, head of drama at Broomwood Hall Upper School, waxes lyrical about the power of drama Anything Goes, Broomwood Hall
A
cting in a dramatic role is something that few adults do on a regular basis; it seems so specialised, requires such time and expertise, and – more than anything – demands the self-confidence to be able to get up in front of an audience and speak. And yet, drama is loved by children the world over, and is something that is heartily encouraged in schools; it is so close to playing, so akin to make-believe that many children naturally take to acting – and, with a little encouragement, they can find themselves experiencing wonderful things on the stage. Drama gives children the opportunity to express themselves without a teacher ‘telling them what to do’. They can be creative, dynamic and inventive, and once they have learned the basic rules of being on

stage, they can adapt and develop roles as they like. As head of drama at Broomwood Hall Upper School, I have the pleasure of helping children to realise this; with a little guidance and a lot of teamwork children can accomplish incredible things – such as a group of 12 and 13-year-olds performing Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Cue resounding laughter during rehearsals bringing cries of insight – ‘But, this is funny!’ – Now that is music to anyone’s ears. The key to a successful play has to be the depth of explanation that accompanies each role, however large or small. This begins in rehearsal, with each child understanding how their character sits, stands and walks. Then they explore their character’s voice, and begin to consider their character’s hopes and dreams, secrets, likes and dislikes, as well as their motivation. When I asked a group of my students what drama had done for them at school, the resounding reply was that it has ‘given me confidence’; girls also reported that they felt more creative and more able to work as a team. Recently, a group of 45 children in Class 6 performed in our annual Class 6 musical. The production was Anything Goes with music by Cole Porter, and the children – a mixture of 10 and 11-year-olds – had the time of their life. - 19 -
Twelve Prince sses Broomwood Hall
Drama is something that is highly valued at Broomwood Hall, and we have a strong tradition of performance within the school – every girl in Class 4 through to Class 8 takes part in a large production a year, as well as a Church Play performed by each class, and a variety of dramatic opportunities in assemblies and competitions. We offer LAMDA lessons and two drama clubs and our results have been excellent. To top it all off this year, our girls have won four Drama Scholarships to various top secondary schools. Drama fosters creativity and confidence, builds friendships and teamwork, and offers our children an outlet for both their bodies and minds; it is an integral part of a well-rounded education and I am inclined to believe that many of our children have the greater self-assurance that many adults admire as a result. n

Education Focus Eco-credentials: Local schools are educating young minds about the great outdoors and protecting the environment
Inspiring a new generation of eco warriors
T
he keen-eyed among us will not have failed to notice an ever growing trend in education over the past few years, one that encourages school children to get outside and engage with the natural world. The preservation of our environment now sits at the forefront of many schools’ educational programmes. Eco-Schools (eco-schools.org.uk), a global environmental programme that encourages pupils and teachers to come up with collaborative, eco-friendly projects, is expanding across the UK and finding new partners every week. Many Eco-Schools recycle more than 50 per cent of their waste. With 6,000 schools signed up in the UK alone, mounds of rubbish are being diverted from landfill sites. Closer to home, The Whitehouse Preparatory School on Thornton Road, SW12, presents a shining example of a head and teaching staff inspiring a new generation to be environmentally conscious. The children at the school are delighted to announce that they secured first place in London in The Big Pedal. This national event involves more than 2,500 schools, encouraging pupils to scoot and cycle to school rather than using car or bus transport. During this year’s event more than 1.5 million journeys were logged. The event was enthusiastically supported by the pupils, parents and staff who scooted and cycled to school over a two week period. The Whitehouse Preparatory School came 19th in the UK in their category and first in London and Lambeth. Teachers at the institution believe the recent success was due to the school’s continued emphasis on encouraging children to be active and healthy. Cycling and scooting is a key part of achieving this and The Whitehouse Preparatory School, with the support of the Lambeth ‘Bike It’ scheme, has also offered ‘Ditch the Stabiliser’ sessions for younger children this term and

will be offering cycling proficiency training for the older pupils in the Summer term. Bonneville Primary School in Clapham has focused its attention on effective recycling and registering with Little Green Sprouts, a gardening initiative founded by Suttons. Little Green Sprouts was launched to help young people fall to in love with nature and learn where their food comes from. Parents with children at the school can use the link to order seeds/equipment and the school will receive points and win seeds for free: littlegreensprouts.co.uk/ bonneville_primary_school. The projects and schemes are incredibly varied and range from meetings to engage young people in eco-discussions to ambitious recycling and fundraising ventures. Battersea-based - 20 -
Chesterton Primary School has formed an Eco Council of pupils and teachers, which meets once a week. The students discuss ways in which the school can move towards its goal of becoming a environmentally sustainable. Griffin Primary School in Wandsworth runs a regular after-school gardening club for Key Stage 1 and 2, and Ronald Ross Primary School in Wandsworth has a dedicated Green Team responsible for recycling all paper and cardboard from their own class, as well as shared areas, ensuring that lights are switched off when not needed. The future for Wandsworth and Lambeth looks bright, but to reappropriate a common catchphrase, it’s certainly not orange; it’s green. n

The
dog house As Battersea Dogs & Cats Home launches its largest appeal to date, Katie Randall urges you to paws for thought and consider digging deep for man’s best friend
E
very dog has his day, or so the old adage goes. As regeneration spreads across North Battersea and Nine Elms, the time has finally come for the redevelopment of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. For the first time in the organisation’s 153-year history, the animalrescue charity has launched its largest appeal to replace its ancient kennels. A tour of the facilities reveals the need. Although serviceable, the kennels are no longer practical given the demands facing both the canine occupants and staff. The development project will sweep across the entire site, which is nestled in between three railway lines in Battersea, modernising the organisation and improving the way in which the dogs are housed, both when they are first being assessed and when they are ready to be rehomed or reunited with their owners. The goal is to take what has been learnt about practicality and successful housing from the current kennels and to apply this to purpose-built facilities. This will improve the animals’ quality of life and reduce the length of time each dog has to stay in care until they are given the opportunity to start a fresh new life with a family. The demand for Battersea’s services is ever increasing; in 2012 the charity received 10,323 calls from people wanting to give up their dog, an increase of 72 per cent yearon-year. To meet this demand, the Home has been forced to use outdated kennels built under the railway arches, which initially opened more than 100 years ago in 1907. Stepping into these kennels during our tour you can almost hear the dogs of the past
barking. Every time a train rattles overheard you can imagine the dogs’ nervous yapping. Battersea estimates that over the years this facility has housed at least one million dogs. Surviving two World Wars, the London Blitz and rabies epidemics is no mean feat, but despite several refurbishments, they remain damp, noisy and dark. It is time for these kennels to be retired and the land they sit on to be utilised effectively. The cost of the five new blocks of kennels, reception buildings and exercise enclosures is estimated at just under £4.8 million. Thus far, generous support has seen £2.9 million raised for the project, leaving a rather large, but not insurmountable, £1.9 million to go. As the charity receives no Government funding, the total cost of the project has to be sourced purely from voluntary income. Chief executive Claire Horton explains: ‘While our staff can give the dogs the love and care they so desperately need, we must ensure our kennels offer the right facilities. We urgently need to bring our kennels into the 21st century and ensure we can continue to offer the best possible care to our animals for many years to come.’ The intake kennels named Tealby – after Battersea’s founder Mary Tealby who started the organisation in 1860 – are due for renovation. A motley crew of canines, from mongrels to bull breeds and everything in between, peer out at me with eyes full of curiosity. This is the first new residence that the animals brought into Battersea Dogs & Cats Home will know. Louise Taylor, a canine welfare trainer

We’re very proud to be working with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home on this unique project. at the charity, tells me that the animals are all assessed here, both behaviourally and medically. If they come in as strays, they are held in these kennels for seven days to give the owners enough time to claim them. After the week-long period, the animals become Battersea’s property and are prepared for rehoming; they are then moved to the Kent building, which is open to the public. The passage of time has dated Tealby kennels, and despite being state-of-the-art 20 years ago, the design is no longer efficient. Liz McWalter, head of dog intake and assessing, points out the lack of natural light and the fact that the dogs all face each other, their sensitive noses not failing to detect every other canine in the vicinity. ‘It can be a really stressful environment for them to be in,’ she explains. The current design of the Tealby kennels means that drainage is also a problem, evidenced in the number of dogs quarantined in a separate wing with kennel cough – the canine equivalent of a human chest cough and cold. The joint drainage system makes it incredibly difficult for the staff to fight infection; Liz and Louise explain that once one dog has a cough, it is more than likely to spread through the kennels like wildfire. Learning from previous impracticalities, the new kennels will feature individual drainage so that they won’t cross-infect other spaces. The rise in ‘status dogs’ has also highlighted the flaws in the existing kennels’
design. ‘Battersea has seen a shift in the breeds it takes in,’ explains Liz. ‘We used to see mostly mongrels, but now about 32 per cent of the dog intake are Staffies or Staffie crosses and 41 per cent are bull breeds. These surprisingly soft and friendly breeds actually find kennel life particularly stressful as they need lots of human contact.’ This stress can lead to a low immune system, which makes them more susceptible to illness. When in the quarantine kennel, I hear less coughing than expected (meaning the pooches are on the mend), but I can’t help but notice that a significant proportion of the dogs are bull breeds and Staffies. A dedicated team of 1,000 volunteers assist staff members across Battersea’s three centres in the UK and one of their roles is to combat stress in the animals. Enrichment programmes include sitting with the dogs and reading to them (we bet they enjoy the adventures of Tintin and Snowy), putting the radio on and using scents to calm the dogs down. Failing that, a romp around Battersea Park or a trip to the exercise enclosures on the site changes the scenery for pooches, but they still have to return to inadequate facilities at the end of their jaunt, a fact that the staff know only too well. After the cattery on the Battersea site was redeveloped in 2010 – it now sits in an attractive, curved glass building – the centre saw a 30 per cent increase in cat rehoming. The charity hopes a wide-scale redevelopment will have the same effect for the canine compatriots at Battersea. We have the pleasure of taking out one of the larger Battersea residents on an afternoon run around one of the enclosures and the development, which is just beginning in the far corner of the site, is pointed out. Four-year-old Freddie, the old English Mastiff, does not seem to mind though, as he sits politely and waits for a treat, posing for our camera with the iconic Battersea Power Station looming behind him. He makes quite the picture and proves himself to be a gentleman, despite his size and being reminiscent of the infamous
Fang from the Harry Potter films. Battersea’s new development will consist of four blocks of 14 kennels, 12 exercise enclosures and a new welcome centre, as well as a public shop and café on the main road. Ensuring that the ‘new Battersea’ is more public-facing is vital to attract a new audience of potential supporters and those looking to rehome. When completed, the kennels will provide better drainage and be easier to clean, as well as housing fewer dogs in each block, ensuring a bit more privacy for stressed-out pooches. Underfloor heating and dedicated sleeping, eating and playing areas will be introduced and each kennel will have its own run and paddock areas attached for exercise. As well as reuniting stray dogs with their owners, the London centre rehomed nearly 2,000 lonely canines in 2013 – a figure that could easily rise, Claire Horton explains: ‘The new kennels should help dogs move through the Home more quickly, and be more relaxed when they meet prospective owners, which can only help their chances of finding a new family.’ With several celebrity ambassadors on board, such as presenter Amanda Holden, comedian and presenter Paul O’Grady, writer Dame Jacqueline Wilson and model David Gandy, the dogs of Battersea are used to famous faces and the public will be soon, too, as a big public campaign begins. Expected to take three to four years, hard work has brought the animal-rescue charity this far, but public support is vital if the project is to continue. After seeing the site with my own eyes, I can vouch for the need. The eerie stillness of the archway kennels is still with me. A small donation can help to change the life of an abandoned or lost, vulnerable animal. So what are you waiting for? Give a dog a bone. n

A round
of outdoor exercise Ozel Rowland embraces the great outdoors as she takes on a personal training session with fitness coach Jody Shaw
Jody Shaw
W
e are now in the midst of a prolific gym culture that I am most certainly not a part of. In all honesty, I probably lead what can best be described as a Ozel Rowland sedentary life; for the most part I use my ‘busy schedule’ to avoid regular exercise. So I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I signed up to take part in an outdoor personal training session with Jody Shaw, an expert personal trainer who, in his four years’ experience, has worked with the elite of the health and fitness
world. He managed to fit me in between his regular clients, a half marathon and a trip to Argentina which, quite frankly, puts all my excuses to shame. After qualifying as a REPS (Register of Exercise Professionals) Level 3 personal trainer, Jody began his career at Fitness First in Holborn. Here, he was ‘poached’ by his clients to work at Bodyism at the Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge. Following this, a stint working with Dalton Wong of Twenty Two Training prepared Jody to launch himself as a freelance personal trainer, covering central and south west London. On the day I’m nervous but calmed by the tranquillity of Battersea Park, and the fact that Jody has already been in touch to find out the extent of my fitness (or lack thereof) before we start. The weather has that refreshing spark of spring to it, a welcome feeling as I approach the bandstand in the park. Jody specialises in a variety of training exercises, including pre and post-natal workouts and injury rehabilitation. His clientele ranges from office professionals and new mums to enthusiasts in their sixties. He starts me off slow; we begin with a mix of body-weight exercises, including squats and lunges. As an amateur, my balance is all over the place, so he helps me get my posture and footing right and instructs me on breathing. I feel energised and the repetitive movements start to become therapeutic. On the next circuit, - 29 -
Jody gets me to do some weight exercises with a 4kg kettlebell, as well as a few strength-training moves, including a side plank and an easier version of a press-up. After a brief rest, he encourages me to move on to my last circuit where he introduces me to a TRX suspension training system. I do a deep squat-to-row exercise and then move on to the Superman – a standing tricep-extension exercise that works the core, chest, shoulders and triceps. Jody has no difficulty demonstrating this flawlessly, as I struggle with my form. ‘You’re probably a lot stronger than you think,’ he assures me, just before he tells me to start doing proper press-ups. But it’s nearing the end of our session and, quite frankly, my arms are like jelly and my leg muscles feel like they’ve been stretched to the end of Battersea Park and back. I give out after one rep, but I still feel a sense of accomplishment. It’s not every day that you get to experience a training session that’s been specifically tailored to your needs. Training outdoors not only made me realise how easy it is to do a full workout without the need of machinery, it also taught me to use the beautiful surroundings of Battersea Park for fitness as well as fun. n

A cut
above the rest
Katie Randall entrusts her locks to the scissorsmiths at hair salon Anthony Laban Home
C
hop, chop. Chop, chop. That is all I can focus on, circling around my mind. I’ve placed my moderately long tresses in the hands of Anthony Laban and his colleague Ellie Hancock, in the hope that they will lop off my split ends, neaten my layers and encourage growth. Attempting not to sound materialistic or vain, and please do take the following statement with a pinch of salt, I am Anthony Laban
attached to my hair. I explain as much to Anthony before we begin, and he smiles, acknowledging that all too often uttered phrase that hairdressers must love: ‘Please be gentle with the scissors, I don’t want to lose too much length.’ After one too many Rachel from Friends experiences, whereby the front section of my hair has been sheared off in a downward gradient on both sides, I am decidedly wary of hairdressers. A haircut is a personal and sometimes intimidating endeavour, chiefly because one rarely gets what one wants out of it. This can be down to the hairdresser or your explanation but, securing the perfect partner in hair crime is tricky; I have found mine in Anthony. One might remember the jovial Anthony from his salon on Lavender Hill, a large operation with some 40 members of staff. His latest venture, Anthony Laban Home, is everything that his former premises was not: intimate, truly personal and tucked away from the hustle and bustle of south west London. - 30 -
‘I wanted to step away from the homogenous, factory line-style salons, where the hairdressers are clock-watching as they have to fit in a certain number of clients. There is nothing wrong with this method of work but, for me and my clients, I wanted everything to be special and bespoke,’ explains Anthony. He adds: ‘Getting your hair cut, coloured or treated should be an experience; something special that you look forward to. A client’s cut or colour should be perfectly tailored to them, and that takes time. I loved working on Lavender Hill, but I found that operating such a large salon meant I spent more time organising staff holiday rotas than helping people to realise their hair’s potential.’ In a bid to recapture what he loves, this creative went back to basics. Anthony Laban Home is a beautiful, welcoming space with room for a handful of clients at a time. It feels truly intimate and relaxed and the team explain that when full, there is a really convivial atmosphere, with people able to chat and enjoy themselves. After an expert head massage and treatment at the basin courtesy of Ellie using Tigi Hair Reborn products (the sensible girl actually thinks to dry my ears after the final rinse, hallelujah), it’s time for the chop. Anthony and I have discussed at length my hair influences, my routine and my goal for this cut, so I feel comfortable when the scissors begin to artfully shape my new style. With every snip, I actually grow in confidence, rather than recoil in fear. Once complete, my new cut – with fringe – really complements my face shape and the hair feels so much healthier. As for the length, well, it barely looks shorter. Can it be? Have I managed to source a salon that not only listens to its clients’ demands, it delivers them too? I heartily recommend that you pay Anthony Laban Home a visit – your hair will thank you. n

Learned courtesans once garnered the world’s best jewels from their lovers and now, in her No Smoke Without Flowers Collection, Tessa relives the riffs on smoke, song, stones, sex and intelligence. If you want something a little more characterful, this collection packs a punch.

Luxury made in Britain
Since 1965, Oscar de la Renta has styled the world with flourishes of tulle and lashings of sequins – a beautiful new coffee table tome from Assouline will draw together his empire and inspirations for the first time. The Style, Inspiration and Life of Oscar de la Renta includes more than 200 pictures, personal insights and tributes from the industry.
Isobel Ridley embraces Britain’s long-lost industrial roots with her new luxury brand Lavender Hill Clothing. Specialising in timeless yet feminine jersey-wear pieces, shoppers can rest assured as she is strictly candid about the manufacturing processes behind them. In her endeavour to move away from the clandestine attitude that has come to be associated with the fashion industry, she reveals that her pieces have been produced from quality raw fabrics from Austria, while basing her manufacturing HQ a little closer to home in Leicestershire. Expect to find lovely yet simple transseasonal pieces one can wear across the year for affordable prices, as well as her brand-new scarf collection, designed by artist Pippa Ridley and made by the same group who produce for the Gucci Group.

THE PLAYGROUND Twinkle, twinkle little star. How I wonder what you are?
Wonderland Katie Randall follows Alice through the rabbit hole and finds herself in Abbeville Road’s Piccoli & Co, a nursery furniture store with a difference, where every piece is modelled on an antique service and will work with them to compile a gift registry, or simply help them to choose a very personal gift for a friend or loved one. We are also offering an interior design service, whereby we will work with you to produce a nursery layout and design. You also offer a monogramming service? L: Monogramming is an essential part of our business; it goes back to my Italian heritage. In Italy, every family has a set of monogrammed linen in their home. Our vision is to bring this tradition to London and to give it a fresh approach, offering the service to welcome new additions to families.
Piccoli & Co was opened in September 2013 at number 63 Abbebille Road by Aine D’Souza and Leo Haynes. What motivated the launch of the brand and why was Abbeville Road the chosen location? Leo: The impending arrival of Aine’s first daughter, Aoife, whom I am godmother to, was part of the inspiration for this new business. It was during discussions at this time that we both felt the children’s market was missing high-quality nursery furniture and bedding. Aine: We share a vision of a reinvented baby’s room and wanted to fill this gap.
What were you both doing previously? A: Leo’s background is in antiques, having worked at Bonhams Auctioneers in Bond Street for four years before opening an antique shop in Clapham, Les Sardines. The shop specialised in 18th-19th century Swedish and French antiques, and Leo sourced all of her antiques around France and northern Europe. We both came back to one of our favourite streets in London, Abbeville, in our home area of Clapham. The street is ever changing and offers a great location in the heart of “nappy valley” for our baby boutique. L: Aine’s background is in retail, working with niche beauty brands such as Korres Natural Products.
Tell us more about the idea of designing nursery furniture based on antiques. A: Leo’s love of antiques and the lack of this style of nursery furniture in the UK market was our inspiration. Piccoli & Co creates pieces that will become family heirlooms, lovingly handed down through the generations. They will give each family the tools to make timeless and comfortable nurseries. Which products are you favourites in the boutique currently? L: I love Theophile & Patachou – the finest nursery bedding made in Belgium, nothing is more elegant or more luxurious. I also really like Bamford Baby, which makes organic baby products of the highest quality, although I often end up using them myself. A: Having worked with Leo on choosing each piece we stock in store, it is hard to pick a few favourites. Nini la duchesse’s musical toys are so unique and each play individual tunes from Elvis to classic French songs. n
How is the store different? L: Piccoli & Co brings a fresh and sophisticated approach to children’s nurseries with upscale bedding, furniture and accessories. A: We are a house of inspirational nursery ideas, coupling the beauty of Europe and the Hamptons, USA, to give you a truly meaningful 63 Abbeville Road, SW4 9JW, 020 8765 3900 nursery where the best moments will happen. Pre nursery school options? I have a very busy and sociable 16-monthold and am wondering about putting her in a nursery-type setting for (ideally) just one morning/afternoon a week, so that she can do some activities she would not experience at home (and to give me some time off). I am not sure what the options are for this in the BTC area. I presume most day care nurseries won’t take bookings for just one morning or afternoon a week? There is Baby Drop on Webbs Road which looks good, but quite expensive with the registration fee. I have seen Little Learners but they want two days minimum. Any other options? Thank you Re: Pre nursery school options?

PROPERTY WATCH Experts share their invaluable knowledge and shine a light on local property news and developments
A new nest Currell are excited to showcase a prime property on Glycena Road
T
ucked away just off Lavender Hill sits a charming property on the market with Currell Residential. The three-bedroom Victorian house is situated on the quiet, tree-lined Glycena Road, and features 1,250 sq. ft. of space, with room to extend into the loft if the buyers so desire (subject to planning permission).
The spacious interior has been decorated in a modern, neutral fashion, with a newly-refurbished kitchen featuring granite work tops, a stone floor and a range – perfect for those who believe that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Green-fingered family members will not be disappointed either, as French doors lead from the reception room out onto a landscaped westfacing garden, perfect for al fresco dining and entertaining. Glycena Road is located close to the Shaftesbury Estate, which is always in high demand due to its family friendly atmosphere. Locals also have Northcote Road and Lavender Hill close by, which have plenty of shops, bars and restaurants on offer. The house would suit a young professional couple who are looking to start a family, as the property has room to grow due to the possibility of extending into the loft. There are also top Ofsted-rated schools nearby and the parks provide great space for exercise and play for children. n

In demand Clare Hampson, head of Savills Battersea Lettings, reveals that family dwelling rentals in Battersea are extremely sought after
‘T
he standout trend for Battersea in the first quarter of 2014 has been an increased demand for substantial family houses priced above £1,000 per week,’ explains Clare Hampson, head of Savills Battersea Lettings. ‘Last year, there was a noticeable lack of a family house market in Battersea, with stock constraints and few applicants looking for high-end family rentals. In contrast, Savills has noticed a definite appetite for top quality family homes since January, particularly from tenants looking to move from north of the river.’
She adds that while Battersea has experienced encouraging rises in rental prices over the year, up by 3.3 per cent since 2013, the area still represents good-value for money in comparison with prime central London locations such as Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster. ‘In fact, over a fifth of our tenants cite affordability as their top reason for renting in the area,’ she says. ‘With Battersea set to benefit from substantial regeneration over the next few years, a number of families are trying out the area as tenants before looking to buy. Experiencing Battersea first-hand as a tenant gives families a valuable insight into the excellent amenities, facilities and transport links that the area has to offer, as well as
Orbel Street exterior
establishing which part of Battersea would best suit their needs.’ In the past few months Savills has let properties on Brynmaer Road, Cambridge Road and Albert Bridge Road, all of which benefit from different geographical advantages: Brynmaer Road is in close proximity to local schools, Cambridge Road benefits from good nearby transport links at Clapham Junction station, while Albert Bridge Road has the shops and restaurants of Battersea Park Road right on its doorstep. Although demand is high, Clare tells us about a lovely property available to rent for families looking just under the £1,000 per week mark on Orbel Street. Available to rent for £850 per week, this beautifully-presented three-bedroom home offers stylish and comfortable living, tucked between Battersea Park Road and Battersea Square with the 200 acres of Battersea Park close at hand.

Also on the up… Savills Wandsworth Lettings team expands upon the positive price growth Rebecca Crowther
seen in Wandsworth in recent years
S
avills Wandsworth Lettings has seen encouraging price growth over the last five years, with an increase of 18.5 per cent in Wandsworth, Clapham and Battersea recorded by Savills’ In Numbers research. This was well ahead of prime central London’s price rise of 1.6 per cent in the same period, making the area an attractive option for landlords. In response to increasing demand in the area, Savills Wandsworth Lettings is pleased to announce that Rebecca Crowther has joined the team as a lettings negotiator.
Emily Hayward, head of Wandsworth Lettings comments: ‘We’re delighted to welcome Rebecca to the team in an increasingly busy local market. Landlords are seeing great potential in Wandsworth, with a £1 billion project to transform the high street already under way. Across London the forecast for the future is also bright, with a
2.5 per cent increase expected in 2014, swelling to a 20.4 per cent rise by 2018.’ Rebecca Crowther comments: ‘It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to work at Savills Wandsworth at such a busy and exciting time. The office looks after a vast range of properties across a number of price brackets, so there is certainly plenty to get stuck into. I’ve worked in the property industry for the past five years and live locally, so I know Wandsworth well and feel part of the local community. As a trained actress, I especially enjoy the great local arts facilities, including the LOST Theatre on Wandsworth Road.’
