RECYCLING ON A GRAND SCALE The chimneys of Battersea Power Station are to be recycled after they’ve been demolished. The idea is to use the original bricks and concrete to rebuild the four iconic white towers. It’s expected to take around two years to complete, and the management of Battersea Power Station is keen to keep the chimneys as a London landmark for generations to come.

A FEAST FOR FOOD FANATICS
TIMELESS DESIGNS Images of the first flats within the Battersea Power Station redevelopment have been released, showing glamorous apartments with fantastic views. The properties are housed within a glass structure on the building’s eastern side and are designed in two distinctive styles, both of which are modelled on an era of the power station’s past. Heritage ’33 is a look inspired by the original build of the power station in 1933, and Heritage ’47 is inspired by the architectural wonders of the 1940s.

The Foodies Festival returns to Battersea Park this month, much to the delight of professional and amateur cooks alike. From 15 to 17 August, festival-goers will be able to get their hands on wine, beer and cocktails, as well as perfectly prepared pastries and professionally-made meals. The festival also has various theatres in which culinary masterpieces will take place. There’s a Chef’s Theatre, a Drinks Theatre and a Barbecue Arena, and it’s all accompanied by tunes from the music stage.

Power of summer movie theatre Throughout the month of August, Battersea Power Station is home to a pop-up park, cinema and Londonbased food and drink festival Street Feast. The event, called the Power of Summer, features a 250-seat cinema and various food stalls. From Little Shop of Horrors to Lady and the Tramp, there’s a film for everyone. The food stalls will offer tempting treats, from burgers to oysters and gently fizzing Prosecco.

A RESTAURANT WITH A TWIST WC restaurant opened last month in the former loos underneath the tube station at Clapham Common. People leaving the old public conveniences can be seen rubbing their stomachs with a smile on their face. The restaurant’s full name is Wine & Charcuterie, and it’s the brainchild of local residents Andy Bell and Jayke Mangion. AB CRUNCHES ON THE COMMON July saw the launch of an outdoor gym facility on Clapham Common. The new structures can be found on the Westside, Battersea Rise and Northside parts of the common. The fitness areas are part of an ongoing recreation development, which will see the installation of exercise equipment for joggers, weightlifters and football teams. Instead of using a gym this month, why not work out on the Common and get a tan at the same time?

Slurp the summer away Drinking cocktails is an enjoyable pastime, but it can be an expensive one. TAKE ON A CHALLENGE Children between the ages of four and 11 are invited to pick up their books in a six-week summer reading challenge. Wandsworth Town Library is taking part in the event which is run by The Reading Agency. This year’s theme is Mythical Maze, and it’s sure to inspire the imaginations of young ones. The challenge runs through until the end of August, the aim is to read six books in six weeks and it’s all free. Find a comfortable spot and get reading!

A TIME TO REMEMBER July saw the beginning of Wandsworth Council’s commemoration of World War One with the unveiling of its newest memorial in Wandsworth Cemetery. The council has four years of events planned, mirroring the length of the war on its 100th anniversary.

TOUR DE WANDSWORTH Wandsworth Council recently announced that the use of Barclays bikes in the area is on the rise. The bikes are reportedly used up to 2,500 times a day, which suggests that local residents are ditching cars and public transport and taking to two wheels. Known as ‘Boris bikes’, they’re now a common sight in the area after the council campaigned for their introduction in December 2013. Do you think you know your Cava from your Crémant? Those who have a taste for the finer things in life should check out the Sparkling Wine Tasting event at The Wine Tasting Shop in Balham this month. Twelve months after celebrating its 10-year anniversary, electronic music festival South West Four returns to Clapham Common over August bank holiday weekend with headline acts including Above & Beyond, Alesso and Sasha. Eighty of the world’s leading DJs and live electronic acts, as well as tens of thousands of dance music enthusiasts, will help write the next chapter in SW4’s illustrious history. DJ Erick Morillo said: “There are not many cities in the world that would host a dance music festival in the backyard of their capital!”
The Vintage Event is back this summer, and the venue will be packed with stalls selling men’s and women’s fashion, accessories, tea sets, gifts and homeware. The fair will sell items from the 1920s right through to the 1980s; perfect if you like styling from a bygone era. There will also be a pop-up gin and tea room and beauty parlour, so there’s plenty to keep you busy. The Clapham Common Series 2014 sees the penultimate race on the last day of August. Runners have the option to complete the five-kilometre lap once, twice or three times, and there’s a two-kilometre kids course too. The route is generally flat, but there are some hilly areas, and participants are split into groups, whether they are elite athletes or beginners. Chip times will also be provided, so if you get the running bug, you can enter the last race on 12 October to try to improve your time.

Cooking up a storm Asian cuisine is a huge part of UK food culture, but the world’s largest continent still has a lot more to offer. Step forward Malaysian chef Norman Musa. He chats to Francesca Lee about his favourite dish, cooking for the Prime Minister and educating local residents
H
i, Norman, we’re excited to hear that you’re attending the Foodies Festival again this year, but let’s take you back a few years; what is your earliest cooking memory? I have many fond memories that stem back to when I used to help my mum in the kitchen. Even then, I found that cooking came naturally to me. You’ve built up a strong reputation for Malaysian cuisine, but what exactly is it that makes a dish? It needs to be spicy and have a kick. This mainly comes from the chilli, but it can come from other ingredients such as peppercorns. You’re known for inspiring others to cook Malaysian food, but how easy is it to buy the ingredients in the UK? I would say 90 per cent are readily available; although herbs such as ginger flower (also known as torch ginger) and turmeric leaves can be tricky to get hold of.
So, how do you go about creating such fusions? The idea is to pair ingredients and work out how they can complement one another. Malaysian produce is varied and flavoursome, but the concept and execution are very similar for every dish. What do others think of you mixing contemporary and authentic flavours? I have been challenged a few times by my fellow Malaysians about the authenticity of my dishes but my argument is that you have to develop cost-effective and easier methods of cooking it without jeopardising the flavour to make it affordable and accessible. The same goes for the availability of ingredients and using local food. Having said that, there will always be those who can’t accept that some meals work well, or even better, with different produce. Do you have any secret recipes? No I don’t; sharing is caring! All of them are readily available in my books, online and through my weekly newsletter. I once shared the ‘secret’ of making roti canai flatbread on YouTube, which is a recipe most roti chefs in Malaysia like to keep to themselves.
How about recommendations; do you have a particular dish that you would suggest to someone if they have never cooked Malaysian food before? Curry laksa. Every time I mention it to anyone, they say ‘That sounds delicious!’, even though they might not have a clue what the dish tastes like! One of your main focuses is to make more people aware of Malaysian food. Have any countries on your tours influenced you to adapt your dishes to create something new and innovative? My recent trip to Barcelona inspired me to create fusion recipes. I also once introduced rendang beef wellington when I was a guest on MasterChef Malaysia. It was featured in Jamie Oliver magazine too as a Commonwealth dish fit for the Queen during her Jubilee year.
Do you prefer to cook for hundreds of people at a food festival, for example, or for a handful of people in a small kitchen at your supper club [he owns and cooks at Ning, his restaurant in Manchester]? Cooking for a mass of people is a lot more exciting as there’s always a buzz and an atmosphere. However, my supper clubs are very popular and my regular guests can be quite loud at times too! You’ve cooked for a whole host of notable people. Who was your most memorable? Without a doubt, it was David Cameron. The organiser

kept it a secret for a few days and only told me 24 hours before the event who I’d be cooking for. My nerves nearly got the better of me while I was shopping for the ingredients as I was just so overwhelmed! Luckily, I was fine on the day. What’s your favourite TV cookery show that you’ve appeared in? Market Kitchen with Rachel Allen; she was lovely. More recently, I’ve worked on a new BBC cookery show that will be on screen in autumn 2014, but my lips have to remain sealed about that one I’m afraid. What are you currently working on? Quite a lot of things, including my new cookbook, creating a cookery school and starting a supper club in Malaysia, to name but a few! Your interests are varied: dancing, cooking and even the interior design of your restaurant. Is it all inspired by Malay culture? I joined a traditional Malay dancing group after I got bored with my then-daytime job as a quantity surveyor, and I’ve even performed for the Queen. However, cooking is what I’m most passionate about. The kitchen has transformed my personality – as the saying goes, you shine when you’re in your element and I’m certainly in mine when I’m cooking.
How is your experience helping others? Teaching new chefs is something that’s still fairly new to me. I recently taught at Leiths School of Food and Wine, which was an honour. I also ran a supper club with students at the Hospitality Guild. If I can help young chefs, I will; and it makes me happy to see my efforts enlighten others. What will you be doing at the Foodies Festival in Battersea? I will be running cookery classes and will also have my latest book and some of my products on sale. What are you looking forward to most about it? The crowd is fantastic. There were a lot of people at my demonstration last year, which was great. I simply love that it’s full of independent and local businesses. n

• 6 tablespoons of cooking oil • 10 king prawns, with shells on (about 300g) • 150g vermicelli noodles, soaked in boiling water for 10 minutes to soften • 100g spinach • 75g beansprouts • Six pieces of tofu • ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder • ½ teaspoon of shrimp paste • 750ml water • 2 teaspoons of salt • 1 tablespoon of sugar • 100ml coconut milk • Juice of 1 lime Dry ingredients • 1 tablespoon of coriander seeds • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds • 1 star anise • 1 cinnamon bark (about 5cm long) • ½ teaspoon of black peppercorns • 2 green cardamoms Wet ingredients • 4 dried chillies, soaked in boiling water for 5 minutes to soften • 8 shallots • 4 cloves of garlic • 2.5cm of root ginger • 2 lemongrass stalks (only use bottom halves) • 50ml water Method 1. Toast the dry ingredients in a wok or pan until fragrant, then cool down for 5 minutes. Use a pestle and mortar (or a coffee grinder) to pound them until fine. Set aside. 2. Blend the wet ingredients until puréed. In a bowl, mix the dry and wet ingredients together with the turmeric powder, shrimp paste, salt and sugar. Mix well. 3. Heat up the cooking oil and fry the spice mixture until fragrant. Add water and prawns. Bring to boil and then simmer on a low heat for 15 minutes. Next, add coconut milk, lime juice, tofu and spinach. Cook for another 5 minutes. Turn off the heat. 4. Put noodles and beansprouts in a separate big bowl and pour over the gravy with prawns, spinach and tofu. Garnish with fried shallots, coriander leaves and sliced chillies.

I
am sitting in a comfortable family living room in Battersea, chatting to husband and wife team David and Eleanor Leyden Dunbar, owners and founders of The Upper Deck Bar, an inspiring new pop-up oyster and Champagne bar within a converted double-decker bus. As I sip on a lovely cup of tea – being a morning interview, Champagne might be slightly excessive – I ask them about their inspiration for the travelling bar. ‘We don’t have a history of loving buses or working in the food industry,’ professes David. ‘However, last year we attended Radio 2’s Festival in a Day and noticed a stand run by the Hummingbird Bakery which was selling cupcakes. Even though it was a really small stand, customers were happy to wait for an hour to purchase one – it had queues longer than the bars and toilets!’ It was during a trip to Scotland that David and Eleanor’s first ideas for a business venture started to kindle, while enjoying a glass or two of Champagne and oysters, of course. ‘One of our favourite spots is a little restaurant and oyster bar in Loch Fyne, which we visit whenever we’re there,’ says David. ‘My wife and I were discussing about how festivals have become really popular, and that the food they sell has moved on so much since the traditional burger van. Nowadays, customers have very discerning tastes, and they have the choice of some amazing gourmet food on offer.’ Herein the concept of The Upper Deck Bar was born. ‘We spent our evenings looking at buses, trying to decide which one to choose,’ says Eleanor, explaining how they finally decided on an opentopped 1971 Daimler Fleetline, which they have restored and converted – all while Eleanor was pregnant with their first child Phoebe. With their strong connections to Scotland [David is Scottish], it was only logical that the couple chose to feature Loch Fyne oysters as their main offering for the business. ‘We actually had Loch Fyne oysters at our wedding, which made a great talking point for our guests,’ points out Eleanor. ‘Our bus is also available to hire for couple’s big days so other people can try oysters and Champagne for themselves.’ In addition to the seafood, they also searched for the perfect drink to accompany the oysters. As part of their discussions, the couple discovered Joseph Perrier Champagne, which is officially linked to Loch Fyne oysters. ‘It’s very drinkable!’ says David. ‘It makes sense for us to encourage customers to buy the oysters, with their very salty flavour, together with a mellow Champagne to wash them down.’ In fact, their most popular offering is their ‘combo deal’ – a glass of Champagne with two oysters – specifically combined because they feel the two should always be tried together. ‘Many people want to try oysters but don’t necessarily want to take a risk by spending a large amount in a restaurant for them,’ suggests Eleanor. David adds: ‘In Victorian London, oysters used to be abundant and cheaper than meat; it’s only recently that they’ve become such a status symbol. Our offer works because it provides a small taster for people, especially for those who have never tried them before.’ So, I ask, what has been the reaction to such

If all of this has whetted your appetite, residents will be pleased to discover that The Upper Deck Bar will soon be featuring at The Foodies Festival at Battersea Park from 15-17 August. David concludes: ‘It’s nice that our local friends can come and see what we do finally!’. I for one will certainly be propping up the bar at that particular weekend. n

Ursula Todd could have lived various other lives, and some of these are explored in Life After Life. She is born on 11 February 1910 to an upper-middle-class British family in a freezing blizzard. However, all is not as it seems as in the first version of her life, she is strangled by her umbilical cord and dies. As the chapters progress, Kate Atkinson presents later paths of Ursula’s life that include her suffering through World War Two, where she witnesses the devastating results of the Blitz. She comes to suspect, however, through a particularly strong sense of déjà vu, that she has lived before. With this hunch, Ursula decides to try to prevent the war by killing Adolf Hitler in late 1930. (£7.99 paperback).

Fragrant Harbour is the story of four people whose lives span Asia’s last 70 years. Tom Stewart leaves England to find his fortune and discovers it by running Hong Kong’s most famous hotel. On the boat to the Asian continent, Tom meets Sister Maria, a beautiful Chinese nun who he remains friends with for the whole of his life in Hong Kong. Throughout the decades, Tom experiences the Japanese occupation of the city, as well as the influx of financiers, warlords and Chinese gangsters. His life as a Hong Kong hotelier is far from quiet. It’s a tale that combines long-lasting friendships and turbulence in a foreign land. (£8.99 paperback).
A Crisis of Brilliance is David Boyd Haycock’s latest non-fiction work that explores the lives of five of the most influential British artists of the 20th century: Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash, Mark Gertler, Richard Nevinson and Dora Carrington. Hailing from diverse backgrounds, the group met before World War One as students at the Slade School of Art, where they formed what their teacher Henry Tonks described as the school’s last ‘crisis of brilliance’. It’s an informative and eye-opening account of a world that was overshadowed by the events of the war that consumed much of Europe. (£20 hardback).

Usually I like an easy read, but sometimes I enjoy the challenge of something that’s a little bit different. I must admit, I balked at starting a book where the first few pages consist of notes on patronymic naming systems in Iceland, and Icelandic pronunciation; but don’t be afraid, I found it hard to put down. The protagonist in Hannah Kent’s Burial Rites may seem hard to empathise with initially as the novel is based on the true story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, a woman who was convicted of murder in Iceland in 1829. As Iceland had no prisons, Agnes was held at a farm for the winter where she was guarded by the farmer’s wife and daughters. The story is told from several different perspectives, and with the support of a number of documents from the case that the story is based upon, the narrative flows well. I found myself not noticing the writing style because the detail and dialogue rings so true. The plot tells the reader what becomes of Agnes as she’s delivered, half-starved, silent and shackled in irons, to the farm where she’s confronted by the parents, their daughters, an inexperienced pastor and the district commissioner. The ending is envisaged but did she or didn’t she commit the murder? This is a novel about how we are perceived by other people and the idea of who we believe ourselves to be. In lyrical prose, Hannah Kent asks; how can a woman hope to survive when her life depends upon stories told by others?
The popularity of survival programmes on television suggests that many of us feel as though we’ve forgotten how we came to be such a civilised species. British scientist Dr Lewis Dartnell has produced a fascinating and thoroughly researched guide about how we could rebuild civilisation after a cataclysm. He teaches that, in order to produce essentials like food, power and medicines, we need to be equipped with knowledge. Without knowing how to purify water, grow food and make clothes, we would be condemned to the dark ages again. After reading the book, it becomes apparent that a basic understanding of science, especially chemistry, will make survival easier to achieve. It also highlights the fact that, in the event of rebuilding the world, educated and rational thinking is more important than superstition. It makes the reader realise that we take so many of our amenities and immunities for granted. For example, without the knowledge to make a simple oral rehydration mixture of water, salt and sugar to survive cholera, many would undoubtedly die from it. Other things that the reader wouldn’t think of are included, too. For example, someone needs to know how to make paper, and everyone needs to know which foods are best at sustaining life. It’s all in The Knowledge, which contains interesting but unexpected anecdotes, such as why carrots, which were originally white, became orange. It’s certainly a stimulating read for all thoughtful adults. n

Purple rain
Wandsworth resident and garden designer Caroline Garland takes her pick of 10 purple plants that are ideal for summer borders
I
love the colour purple in a summer border. It is often overlooked but blends in beautifully with greens, whites, yellows, pinks and, believe it or not, reds. The following 10 blooms are pretty robust (apart from clematis) and flower well. They all love the sun – particularly good for a south-facing border – and will provide fabulous colour for a wonderful, long-flowering period. What’s more, they will re-grow year after year. Three of them: Lavendula intermedia, Teucrium fruticans and Erysimum are evergreen so will give you some interest during the winter months too. 1. Teucrium fruticans ‘Azureum’ is an evergreen shrub with white, felted shoots and small, ovalshaped, glossy dark-green leaves. It produces small light-purple flowers in summer and is a great filler plant.
through to autumn. Its untamed appearance means it has become popular recently as it works well with the current trend for naturalistic planting. 6. L avendula intermedia ‘Heavenly Scent’ is a must-have for many gardens. This shrub has bushy, grey-green foliage and dense, soft-violet blooms. It’s perfect for filling out the front of any border, but can also look quite formal if kept clipped and tidy.

2. Clematis ‘Arabella’ is known for its long-flowering season, which starts in June and peaks from July to September. It makes a bright and bold addition in any border.
7. Rosmarinus ‘Miss Jessop’s Upright’ is a compact, medium-sized evergreen shrub with aromatic, narrow, oblong-shaped dark-green leaves. Small, two-lipped lightpurple and blue flowers grow in spring and summer. 8. P hlox paniculata ‘Purple Flame’ is a pretty perennial with large clusters of fragrant flowers in deepmagenta and mauve that sprout from around mid-summer. 9. Linaria purpurea ‘Purple Toadflax’ is a popular cottage-garden flower which has tall, slender spikes of violet flowers that appear until autumn. It will gently self-seed into other places, but it never becomes a nuisance. 10. Thalictrum delavayi ‘Hewitt’s Double’ has sprays of flowers that from a distance look like a purple mist hovering among other plants. It’s invaluable for providing contrast with heavier blooms and will tolerate shade too. n

Power Station Move over the multiplex: Lauren Romano visits Battersea Power Station for a cinema pop-up with a difference

History in the making It would be short-sighted to shrug the event off as little more than a great night out, however. After all, The Power of Summer is history in the making as the event will be the last opportunity the general public has to visit the Power Station before its imminent redevelopment. The small matter of the sprawling site’s future legacy is something that Dave Twohig, head of design and placemaking at the Battersea Power Station Development Company, anticipates with excitement. ‘Without a doubt the Power Station’s four chimneys have left an indelible mark on London’s skyline. The building is one of London’s quintessential landmarks and its enduring appeal has been spurred by various cultural outlets that have featured the building – from gracing the cover of Pink Floyd’s Animals album to serving as a backdrop for numerous films and television episodes,’ he explains. For anyone who wants to snoop around but isn’t in the mood for a movie, Dave is quick to point out that entrance to the site is free on weekdays and £5 on evenings and weekends. From the vertiginous chimneys, whose millions of bricks resemble tiny Lego blocks stacked up in a dizzying Jenga tower, to the cavernous, skeletal interior, just visible beyond the screen, there’s certainly plenty to marvel at. ‘We felt that The Power of Summer was the perfect opportunity to get people on site and experience what the permanent riverside park will be like in the future,’ Dave explains. ‘Public events are

he generators will be fired up at Battersea Power Station once more this summer. Celluloid takes the place of coal as the landmark brick cathedral’s new fuel, however, as The Power of Summer, a seven-week outdoor cinema and street-food celebration gets under way. The team at the Power Station has joined forces with Everyman cinemas, gastronomic nomads Street Feast and Heineken to curate a silver-screen experience like no other. Forget pick ‘n’ mix that’s more expensive per gram than gold bullion or straining to follow a film over the hyena cackles of teenagers on double dates; The Power of Summer is a far cry from your run-of-the mill picture house. Classics such as The Graduate and Pulp Fiction share the nine-metre LED screen with more recent blockbusters and a number of films for younger viewers, which will all be screened outside against the backdrop of the building’s soaring chimneys. With more food and drink options than you can shake your popcorn bucket at, the Street Feast traders are blazing a trail of tacos, hot dogs, macaroni cheese and the grown-up take on a Slush Puppy – the frozen tequila colada – in their wake. After a swift prayer for sunshine and blue skies, visitors can sink into a beanbag, slip on their headphones and tune in while munching on pots of wasabi peas. Splashing out a few extra pennies gets couples or groups of four their own private pod, complete with pre-film table service. With refreshing mojitos, slow-cooked short rib burgers from Le Bun and doughnuts smothered in salted caramel and pecans delivered to your seat, this is cinema at its most gluttonous.

The pop-up certainly makes the most of its spectacular riverside location. Bread Collective has created the playful signage and overall look and feel of the site, while the cinema and park structure are the work of Paddy Austin at Cities in the Dark. But despite the colourful distractions, the history of this long-abandoned address is hard to shake off, with redundant industrial contraptions lining the quiet riverside walk up to the main arena. But what will happen once the redevelopment gets into full swing? ‘The Power of Summer is just the beginning of a dynamic programme of public events,’ Dave assures. ‘We’re looking forward to opening the permanent riverfront park in 2016, which has been designed by our landscape architects LDA Design and Exterior Architecture to accommodate a whole array of public events – from large outdoor markets and exhibitions to smaller, more informal gatherings such as outdoor yoga classes and lunchtime concerts,’ he adds, as the sun begins its slow descent behind the chimneys. One thing’s for sure, Battersea Power Station isn’t going to run out of steam anytime soon. n The Power of Summer runs until 31 August. The exams may be over, school ties loosened and revision timetables torn in two, but if you’re in Year 11 and waiting for your GCSE results, it may be difficult to relax… Results day – it can be a very frightening prospect – particularly if you aren’t entirely sure about what your options are if you don’t achieve the GCSE grades you want. So instead of worrying about what your results slip may look like, read on to discover what options are available to you. You never know, your best option may not be the most obvious. You’ll already be aware that it’s now compulsory for young people to stay in education or training until the age of 18; but for the first time, how you approach the next stage of your education is entirely your decision. That’s why it’s a good idea to find somewhere that offers subjects that you are excited by, in an environment that’s right for you.

W
hen I first heard about a new service that offers mums a chance to meet like-minded parents in the area, I thought to myself: ‘What a brilliant idea, why hasn’t anyone thought of that before?’. Although I don’t yet have children of my own, I appreciate that motherhood can be an amazing experience, but has many swings and roundabouts to go with it too. Take my friend Kate, for example, who has recently had a baby. She has a lot of friends, but unfortunately the ones with kids are spread all across London, and she often finds it tricky to navigate the tube, pram in tow. ‘It’s always a big effort to travel to the other end of London, which is not exactly what you want when you’ve just had a baby,’ she stated to me rather matter-of factly, over a glass of vino or two. She adds: ‘I sometimes feel isolated as it’s just easier staying at home, rather than having the hassle of going out. I quite often wish I could just meet someone round the corner for a cup of tea.’ Step forward Match Up Mums. Run by mother-of-three Megan Butler from her Battersea Victorian terrace, she’s an inspiring lady indeed. After spending many years working for a big media agency, followed by a senior post at an advertising strategy consultancy, she decided to branch out on her own when she had a brainwave to set up a local mums’ network. ‘Although I am a mum myself, it wasn’t until my friend’s engagement party – who had met her partner through an online dating agency – that the idea came to me. ‘My sister-in-law, who was also at the celebration, and I couldn’t believe that two people with so many shared interests met online. They both filled in a detailed questionnaire, and when they went on a date, they found they had much in common. It was then that I thought this concept could be transferable to a mums’ network and a great way to meet other mums or soon-to-be mums in the local area.’ Before launching the business, Megan did her research carefully. ‘There are many antenatal classes available such as yoga birthing and hypnobirthing, as well as group activities for when your child arrives, but there wasn’t a service where you could meet a group of like-minded mum friends in your local area.’ She launched the company on 20 June 2014, and in the first month 20 groups of new mum friends have been introduced, mostly in the SW London area. Megan explains: ‘We launched through word of mouth and also at the Northcote Road Fête so it’s no surprise that we’re stronger in our local area, but as we’re an online business, we’ve already had sign-ups from much further afield, from Brighton to York.’ But how exactly does the company match up mums? I wonder. Megan explains that, in general, people like to meet others

who are at a similar stage to them and who have similar interests. ‘If you’re still breast feeding and having sleepless nights, it’s impossible to compare notes with a toddler parent as you’re in a completely different place. Or if you feel like the only one going back to your career, or the only mum staying at home, it can be hard to build your new support network.
‘Our questionnaire takes about 10 minutes to complete and includes everything from their baby’s date of birth to the last book they’ve read or favourite type of holiday, and lots of questions about personal values. There are about 60 questions with lots of different variables, so it gives a good representation of each member’s personality.’ Once a group of mums has been established, Megan helps them agree some dates to meet and also finds a suitable location close to home. ‘It can be quite daunting meeting others for the first time, so I’ve prepared some icebreaker packs if they wish to use them,’ she says. Megan has also used her past experience to set up partnerships with big names, including JoJo Maman Bebe and Mermaid Maternity - 35 -
Retreat, which will offer their services and special deals to group members. ‘Whether it’s a weaning workshop or a home spa day, once they’re a member, there’s plenty to keep mums inspired,’ she describes. As our chat draws to a close, Megan and I move on to talk about how friends and local residents alike have helped shape the business and the area where she lives. ‘A local mum designed the logo, the mothers in the marketing material are members of the Wandsworth Twins Club and local friends have shared their ideas for the company,’ she says. Megan has, in fact, lived in SW11 for 15 years and has seen it change vastly over the years. ‘When I first moved here, it was quite student-y, whereas it has become more family-friendly now. Our kids love it as the Common is just five minutes away and there’s a range of family-friendly businesses – it’s the perfect base to start Match Up Mums.’ It’s clear to see that Megan’s proactive attitude, her experience of being a mother and her professional background means that MUM is going to be a very successful business indeed. n

IN THE KNOW The Journal decodes the latest plans for the Crossrail 2 project

THE ROUTE The proposed Crossrail 2 route links Wimbledon in the south-west to Alexandra Palace in the north, with stops at key locations across the city, such as Clapham Junction, Victoria, Euston and Seven Sisters. The current consultation has discussed the various options for a stop in Chelsea, which would alleviate the pressure on the District Line, and join previously ill-connected parts of the area to the rest of London. HOW IT WILL IMPROVE YOUR COMMUTE In terms of journey times, passengers travelling between Wimbledon and other potential south-west regional stops, to and from Chelsea, and across the city towards Words / Kate Jennion
the north-east will benefit most from the new scheme. Current journey times from Wimbledon to Chelsea are more than 40 minutes (according to TfL Journey Planner) but TfL and Network Rail claim that the new Crossrail 2 line will cut this to only nine minutes. Similarly, commuters travelling between Clapham Junction and Chelsea will have their current 30-minute journey reduced to just three minutes by the proposed route. Consequently, Wimbledon and Battersea residents, or those travelling through the Clapham Junction hub, will also benefit from shorter journey times into central London via Victoria or Euston stations. Another aim of the project is to reduce the stress on already-overcrowded commuter trains in and out of the city during rush hours, a problem which will - 36 -
only worsen over the next 15 years, as experts predict a population growth in London and surrounding areas of around 10 million by 2030. WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN For the next two years, TfL and Network Rail are in the development and analysis stages of the project, with finalisation due to take place sometime between 2016 and 2019. The 2020-2030 decade will be taken up with construction and testing, with Crossrail 2 designated to open to the public in the early 2030s. POSSIBLE SOUTH-WEST EXTENSION Although still in the very early stages, plans are afoot to extend the Crossrail 2 route out

WHAT THE EXPERTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT IT Mayor of London Boris Johnson maintains that the benefits to the city are multifaceted. ‘If London and its economy are to keep moving, then it’s essential we crack on and get Crossrail 2 delivered,’ he says. ‘It’s a vital project not just for the capital, but also for the regions from which hordes of commuters struggle into work on packed carriages each day. As we’ve seen with Crossrail 1, major transport developments like this have an enormous role to play not only in boosting capacity, but also in galvanising economic development and unlocking the potential for jobs and homes.’
‘The bulk of people using the Northern Line currently get on at Balham, Clapham Common and Clapham North. A fair day’s fun Knight Frank Wandsworth lends a hand at the third annual Bellevue Village Fair
T
he Bellevue Village Fair, against the stunning backdrop of Wandsworth Common, has proved so popular in the past few years that it returns again next month for its third outing. Once again, all the shops, restaurants and other traders on Bellevue Road will open their doors for a day of family fun. The fair is organised by The Bellevue Association, a group of local shops and businesses dedicated to boosting the community and giving residents an opportunity to make the most of the local area. For that reason, this year’s fair will also see the launch of the ‘Keep it Local’ campaign, which is designed to encourage people to shop locally, boost the Bellevue economy and promote the important role the road plays in the community. Local businesses will be getting involved in many different aspects of the day. As its contribution, the Knight Frank team will once again be hosting a lively party at its Wandsworth office, offering glasses of delicious chilled cider and giving out candy floss for the little ones. Optional donations can be made to raise money for the company’s chosen charities: Land Aid, Mary’s Meals, Kids Company, Barnardo’s and the MPS Society. Knight Frank will also be donating a Bellevue Village Shop voucher as a prize for the raffle, as part of the day’s aim to encourage more people to shop locally. Other events on the day will include live music acts, craft
and food stalls, cooking demonstrations (and tastings), games, face painting and even a visit from the local fire brigade. There will be plenty of opportunities to learn about activities taking place in the local area too, with clubs and charities on hand with their stalls to chat and share their knowledge. One of the most popular aspects of the fair is the dog show, which raises money for the Mayhew Dog & Cat Charity with a number of different categories, including Prettiest Lady, Handsomest Male, Waggiest Tail and Rock Star (fancy dress optional!). Last year, for the Best Rescue, he chose a beautiful Doberman and, the previous year, he selected a lovely Portuguese Water Dog called Alfie as Handsomest Male. Battersea booming Mayow Short, Head of Savills Battersea, discusses how the area is developing
T
he property market in Battersea has blossomed over the past few years, with a record average price increase of 111 per cent between 2009 and 2014. There have been a number of reasons for this dramatic gradient, starting with the impressive redevelopment of Nine Elms, including Battersea Power Station and Embassy Gardens, which has raised the area’s profile as a place for outstanding investment opportunity. The extension of the Northern Line also includes two new tube stations that will provide links running directly into the city, enhancing Battersea’s transport connections. As we predicted, prices have steadied this year, which has allowed buyers to make decisions without fear of seeing an intimidating increase on their intended purchase overnight. The introduction of the new American Embassy and the creation of grand new boulevards (providing contemporary homes, offices and shops, as well as a cinema, gym and spa) means Battersea is set to become a thriving cultural and business centre in its own right. The American Embassy move has encouraged other embassies to follow suit, opening up new employment opportunities. Although the buzz around Nine Elms is already well under way, the entire refurbishment of the area isn’t expected to be completed until 2019, so this positive effect should last for some time yet. Battersea Park has always been popular with buyers both in the UK and internationally, offering beautiful open space in central London. Buyers are moving from north of the river, from the likes of Chelsea, Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Pimlico. Many of these are international, have previously been renting, and are now looking to get a foothold in the London market. Battersea is also a favourite for families, which, when you combine the benefits of the park with some outstanding local schools such as Newton Prep and Thomas’s, make it a popular location for those with children. Types of property on offer in the area range from pretty Victorian houses and handsome late-Victorian and Edwardian mansion blocks, to the striking modern architecture of big apartment buildings like those on the river. Current demand for family homes is high, particularly for properties under £2million, but couples and young professionals can also benefit from the high levels of stock that we’re experiencing, with some fantastic apartments on offer. Say cheese… John Thorogood estate agents, the main sponsor of last month’s Northcote Road Summer Fête, is a fan of the selfie, as director Austin Thorogood explains

might have worked on some poses!’ Austin admits with a chuckle as he recalls the John Thorogoodsponsored photo booth, which was the talk of this year’s Northcote Road Summer Fête. All day long visitors joined the continual queue to don novelty noses, oversized specs and brightly-coloured wigs to smile for the camera. ‘We threw our doors open and had a constant stream of people waiting outside. All our staff were out in force serving Prosecco and soft drinks and snacks for the children; it was great fun!’ he exclaims. ‘John Thorogood was closed during last year’s event due to refurbishment, but I couldn’t help thinking the main sponsors should be doing more than just putting banners up,’ Austin explains. So when the opportunity arose to sponsor the event this time around, he jumped at the chance. The fête was an undeniable success, but the weather nearly wiped the smile off Austin’s face. Bright and early on Sunday morning – before the 5,000-strong crowd arrived – as the food stalls rolled in and the dance troupes warmed up on the stage, Austin woke up to pouring rain. ‘Typical,’ I thought. ‘All this hot weather and today of all days the heavens open!’ he recalls. Thankfully, as the team set about installing its own special contribution to the day’s festivities – a giant penalty shoot-out and a photo booth complete with a dressing-up box of wacky props – the sun emerged from behind the clouds. The day was very much a family affair: Austin’s wife Cara was responsible for booking the entertainment, while their two sons ended up guarding the penalty shoot-out. ‘My boys are football crazy and they were well and truly in the World Cup spirit,’ says Austin. ‘They both did the test run in the morning and then they didn’t leave for the whole day – the supervisor
ended up with his own team of ball boys!’ Austin handed out prizes for the best shot in different age categories, which brought out a competitive streak among the children waiting to take part. John Thorogood balloons and banners decorated the road, but Austin is quick to point out that the company didn’t just want to hand over a wad of cash and then stand back and let everyone else roll up their sleeves; the team threw themselves into the day. ‘It was important for me to have the shop open this year and to mingle with the residents. I wanted us to put our own stamp on the event – I am very proud that we organised two popular free activities. ‘I’m so glad we took part. Even if we can’t sponsor the 2015 fête, I’m looking forward to organising more entertainment next year,’ he says. ‘My wife is going to have her work cut out trying to top the photo booth though – everyone loves an excuse for a selfie!’ n

t’s an adage question: to rent or to buy? In the UK, it is drummed into our psyche from a young age that one day we have to make that all-important leap on to the property ladder. However, for many, it is difficult to even get on that first step – let alone climb – especially in the buoyant London market. It’s no surprise that more and more people are turning to renting, as have 60 per cent of households in European cities. However, with buying comes the satisfaction of owning your own place, so what are the benefits for each? I bought my first property many moons ago, aged 25. I put down a deposit of £3,000 on a two-bedroom cottage in Coggeshall in Essex, priced £35,500. I did very little to it, and sold it two years later for £12,000 profit. It was then that I realised the benefits that would be gained from buying and selling. Fast-forward to 2014 and the story is very similar, but on a much larger and fast-paced scale in London. Firstly, you need a hefty deposit. A one-bedroom flat off St Johns Hill in SW11, for example, would cost in the region of £400,000. With most mortgage companies requiring a minimum 15 per cent deposit, it would set you back £60,000. Many people who aspire to own property in this area may not be able to afford this initial outlay, and instead of moving out will decide to rent instead. Renting allows people to be flexible. There are many different types of contracts to suit the needs of the tenant, and it also means fewer costs when moving; for example, no stamp duty and legal or surveyor fees. Indeed, the statistics speak for themselves, and with a million more renters across the country than there were only a decade ago, it may mean that, for some, buying has lost its sparkle. Attitudes are changing for many, and Generation Rent is no longer seen as a bad thing.
However, if you have the money to invest in property, London is the place to do it. Home owners who have bought as recently as 2013 have reaped the rewards by selling just a year later, some making tens of thousands of pounds, if not more. Overseas buyers still see London property as a fail-safe way to make money; indeed, 60 per cent of the flats sold in the Nine Elms development by the Berkeley Group were sold to buyers from foreign shores. My conclusion? If you can afford to buy, do so; but if you can’t, don’t feel guilty about renting, it has plenty of positives too. n
