Dear Resident, On behalf of the Residents’ Journal team, we would like to wish readers a very merry Christmas. However you choose to spend your time over the festive period, may family and friends bring you abundant joy. We’ve headed to the streets this month to ask a few familiar faces what Christmas and the festive period means to them; some warm up for the Christmas feast with fish pie the night before, others recall fond memories of relatives running around the house with sleigh bells to trick young minds into thoughts of Santa on the roof. Flick to page eight to get into the spirit. As the party invitations start to flood through letterboxes, we have rounded up some of our favourite events happening right on your doorstep on our calendar (p. 12), as well as highlighting some of the presents we’d like to find wrapped under the tree in our gift guide (p. 22). Kari Rosenberg also meets artist and creative genius Patrick Kinmonth, as his latest exhibition launches at Maestro Arts gallery (p. 15), and I have the pleasure of chatting with the enterprising Inma Goodhew, founder of The Old School Club, a new arts and crafts venue for parents and children (p. 24). As our charity competition deadline looms (10 December), please tell everyone you can to vote for the charity they would like to see awarded £500. We will announce the five winners in the January edition. We also look forward to bringing you all of the latest local news and interesting features in 2014. Until next year…

Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s Planning Application Committee has approved plans to build the brand new £22 million foot and cycle bridge, dubbed the Diamond Jubilee Bridge. The structure will link Hammersmith & Fulham with Battersea and has been awaited with bated breath as the Battersea side of the bridge was approved by Wandsworth Council’s PAC earlier this year. MP for Battersea Jane Ellison recently spoke out in support of the footbridge detailing the strong case for construction, citing improved economy on both sides of the bridge and greater access to amenities.

Run, Forrest, Run The Running School’s ethos is simple; first they teach you to run, then they teach you to run faster, regardless of age, ability level or state of physical wellness. The Journal recently discovered this pavement-pounding academy, whose local branch operate out of Body Logic Health in Battersea, and have become hooked on the idea of becoming the next Mo Farrah or Paula Radcliffe. CLAPHAM AND BALHAM

A grand opening Clapham Omnibus, Lambeth’s very own creative arts centre, opened its doors in November in a display of warmth and welcome. The Journal interviewed chair of trustees George Owen and artistic director Marie McCarthy in the November edition and learnt that this venture has been seven years in the making. The Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Mark Bennett, opened the iconic building and Blanche Marvin MBE, the guest of honour, delivered the inaugural speech to attentive attendees. A tour of the newly refurbished arts centre followed, with an opportunity to meet the Omnibus team.

Alfriston Road Post Office refurbishment

Local architect and father of four, Max de Rosee, ran the New York marathon on 3 November, raising money for homelessness charity Emmaus Lambeth. Max, 38, who is the joint director of the architectural practice De Rosee Sa, based in North Kensington, only finds time to train first thing in the morning or at night after a full day in the office when his kids are in bed. The runner smashed his target of £4,000 raising an impressive £5,034.60 for the charity, which helps formerly homeless people by giving them a place to live and work. Max explains: ‘I want to help Emmaus because the charity not only gives people a place to live, but also because it offers them the chance to work. At Emmaus people can gain new skills and qualifications while they get back on their feet, and that is important.’ Max de Rosee runs a marathon

For the Fallen

Major Tom Ratcliff and children. Courtesy of Northcote Lodge and Broomwood Hall

Local schools, Northcote Lodge and Broomwood Hall, gathered together on 11 November for Armistice Day at St Luke’s Church. The children were joined by Major Tom Ratcliff of the Coldstream Guards, who spoke about his personal experiences of friends who had been killed in war and the importance of remembrance. Jack Redmanye then read some lines from Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen before music was played and Reverend Morris concluded the service.

Wise words The Metropolitan Police’s temporary borough commander for Wandsworth Paul McGregor offers a sage warning: ‘I would ask all of you to spread the word about looking after your properties as we lead up to Christmas. We are investigating burglaries being committed in the Tooting area and in particular the Nightingale and Bedford wards. Often the houses that are attacked by burglars have inadequate locks on the front doors... I ask all of you to be vigilant.’

The (local) Sartorialist Stylist Ronke Fashola would like to extend an exclusive discount on all Stylizers services to Residents’ Journal readers. Night noise to continue

Magic wand Wandsworth Council’s WAND Card, which seeks to help the borough’s disabled children get out and about, has reached its first birthday. The scheme celebrated with a party at Battersea Park Children’s Zoo. The zoo was one of the first organisations to sign up to offer discounts through the card – WAND Card holders and their carers get in free. WAND Cards mean disabled children and young people aged 0-19 can get concessions and extra support at venues around the borough. The card can be used as a form of ID to stop parents having to explain their child’s disabilities every time they go out. It can also be shown to get concessions at some venues, including the BAC, DC Leisure centres, Wandsworth Cineworld, London Recumbent cycles, Tara Arts and Wandsworth Museum. To be eligible for a WAND Card, you will need to go on the Disabled Children’s Register. This will mean you will get up-to-date information about relevant services and will get a chance to help shape council services for disabled children and their families.

Council leader Ravi Govindia reports that the Department for Transport’s decision to continue with the existing Heathrow night flight rules until 2017 will consign local residents to ‘four more years of noise misery.’ The existing rules governing aircraft movements between 11.30pm and 6am were due to expire in October next year but the Government recently unveiled a consultation on night flight rules which offers little change to the established system. The council and its campaign partners have been lobbying for early morning arrivals to be phased out due to mounting evidence of their effects on peoples’ health and quality of life.

Traditional Christmas We ask local people what this most festive time of year means to them‌

Residents’ Journal

Amelia and Luke Brady the owners Brady’s Restaurant, SW18 (bradysfish.co.uk) ‘We always have fish pie on Christmas Eve without fail. Creamy and studded with scallops and prawns as an extra treat and topped with delicious mashed potato; it is a family tradition that has remained unbroken over the years. The best part of Christmas is the morning. When the children were young they would all pile into our bed at some ungodly hour of the morning and we would open our Christmas stockings together. We loved plunging our hands into the ancient old rugby socks to pull Amelia and Luke Brady out strangely shaped little parcels. I would make it my mission to find the weirdest and funniest things to put in the sock and always included a sugar mouse and a bag of chocolate coins at the bottom. I remember the excitement of feeling the heavy knobbly old sock at the end of my bed on Christmas morning even to this day. Our children have now passed on this tradition to their own kids.’

Bill Rayburn A local resident who emigrated from across the pond ‘Last Christmas (2012) was my first in London. I’d arrived in October and the celebration of Christmas shortly thereafter was the cherry on top of an incredible year for me. I came to this wonderful city to meet my new love in person for the first time – two writers who met on the internet! We shared many of our Christmas traditions with each other, which was like rediscovering the little things that seem to make Christmas the best holiday of the year: trimming a tree, stringing lights around a window and always burning candles. It all seemed like a coronation of our newfound love. These traditions had grown tired over the years, but they were absolutely revitalised for me, due to two wonderful additions to my life: my lady and London.’

Bill and his pet dog

Izzy Moreau Artist and founder of Lavender Leonardos, an art class for children run out of Lavender Hill Studios ‘Having a French father and a German mother, my sister and I grew up with many different traditions. As a child, and later with my own children, during the four advent Sundays before Christmas we would make our own presents and cards for everyone, while listening to stories by Hans Christian Anderson. On Christmas Eve, we would decorate the tree with homemade decorations and real candles. Family and friends would then gather and sing Christmas carols around the piano. My godmother would run around the house shaking bells while we were asleep and in the morning would tell us they were sleigh bells. She would also shake icing sugar over large boots to make snowy footprints from the fire place. At this time of year, I am kept busy with my children’s art school, Lavender Leonardos, where we run termtime and holiday workshops. Lavender Hill Studios also runs arts and crafts workshops for adults where you can learn, printing, gilding, hat making, mixed media and all manner of festive craft.

Camilla Hampton Interior designer and the founder of Camilla Hampton Interiors (camillahampton.com) ‘As someone obsessed with making things look beautiful and being a complete romantic and slightly eccentric, I absolutely adore Christmas. For us, Christmas is all about a feast for all the senses. Surrounding ourselves with beautiful twinkling decorations and warm glowing candles made out of hollowed-out oranges studded with cloves and tied with ribbons. Family and friends fill the house with laughter at our Christmas Eve drinks party, before we all pile merrily into our local Midnight Mass service. Opening stockings in bed with champagne on Christmas day is a must and my dog Beetle also has a stocking. On Boxing Day we always drive around the deserted streets of London up to Somerset House, where we go ice skating and drink hot chocolate. You can drive really slowly and take in all the beautiful buildings and I always notice a statue or mews in London that I have never seen before despite having lived here all my life.’

Residents’ Journal

Mark Wild Personal fitness trainer and founder of Mark Wild Health (markwildhealth.co.uk) ‘With time seeming to fly at a faster rate every year, the emphasis over Christmas for me is to spend quality time with family. I run my own business, so organisation is my forte. With presents packed, I look forward to chatting over good food in front of the log fire. Personally, probably due to my health and fitness background, I like to have a small degree of satisfaction when tucking into my Christmas dinner, so usually we take an hour to have a good walk in the morning – even if just to enhance the appetite. My 31-year-old sister still has the excitement of a four-year-old, so we delay opening presents until after we have watched the Queen’s speech. The leftovers of lunch provide us with the perfect nibbles while we play some board games and gossip. This is usually accompanied by my Mum delving into her ‘naughty draw’ to find the home made sloe gin. Bed follows shortly after this.’

Thomas Mogford Local crime fiction author (thomasmogford.com) ‘Christmas at my parents’ house in Oxfordshire has always a followed a fairly rigid routine, so a few years ago I broke with tradition and visited a friend on secondment to a law firm in Shanghai. A group of us arrived on Christmas Eve, dumped our bags in his flat then headed out on the town. A thrilling neon world with no Christmas decorations… I decided to stay out later than everyone else, only realising that I was unable to speak fluent Mandarin when it came to trying to catch a cab home. My friends had all turned off their phones, and I couldn’t check into a hotel because I didn’t have my passport. As a result, Holy Night was spent pacing the freezing streets of Shanghai before wandering into an apartment block and climbing under a sofa laid out in reception. Alas, the caretaker saw my feet sticking out and pulled me awake by my toes. This year my wife and I shall be recreating the traditional family Christmas in Battersea – turkey, tree, a bit of writing and definitely no sleeping under sofas…’

Holly Etoile Founder of Etoile Parties (etoileparties.co.uk) ‘At Etoile Bakery we are busy making Christmas cakes at this time of year and I always bake and decorate a lovely big cake for the family at Christmas. Last year the cake was a decadent rich chocolate cake, this year I’m planning a white chocolate affair. My White Chocolate Christmas Cake is guaranteed to impress (you need 360g white chocolate, 250g softened unsalted butter, 400g caster sugar, five eggs, 480g plain flour, 400ml milk and 2.5g baking powder). The ingredients make an eight inch round cake. Preheat the oven to 150 C or gas mark two and line an eight-inch round cake tin with baking parchment. Break the chocolate into pieces and put it in a saucepan, add the milk and slowly heat until all the chocolate has melted. This can also be done in a microwave if you prefer. Once all the chocolate has melted, set to one side to cool. Next beat the sugar and butter together in an electric mixer until the mix is light and fluffy and has become noticeably paler in colour. Crack the eggs into a bowl and add to the mixture one at a time. If your eggs are a little cold, add a spoonful of the flour with each egg to

prevent the mix from separating. Sift the flour and the baking powder together and add to the mixture, then mix until it is all just combined. Add the chocolate mixture a little at a time. Pour the cake into the prepared cake tin and bake in the middle of the oven for about 50 minutes, although baking times will vary depending on your oven. You can tell it is done when a skewer into the cake comes out clean, and the top springs back under your touch. Cool and wrap in clingfilm to be refrigerated until you are ready to ice it. For the buttercream icing you will need 400g white chocolate broken into pieces and gently melted, 250g butter, 500g sieved icing sugar and one teaspoon of vanilla extract. Melt the chocolate gently over a pan of water or in the microwave – be very careful not to burn it. Once melted, allow to cool. Meanwhile mix the butter, icing sugar and vanilla extract together in an electric mixer. Gently stir in the cooled melted chocolate. To fill the cake, take a large serrated knife and cut the cake horizontally into two even rounds. Spread - 10 -

a generous layer of white buttercream over the bottom half, place the other half on top to sandwich the two layers together. Use the rest of the buttercream to cover the cake. You can either create rough swirls in the buttercream or use a palette knife to achieve a smooth finish. I finish mine with snowflakes cut from rolled fondant icing and generous sprinkles of edible glitter.’

‘How I long for Christmas this year. It has become the only time of year one can feel totally relaxed about turning your phone off for a few days. My husband is German and I am Norwegian so every year we alternate who we spend Christmas with. Our tradition is to go skiing in the Dolomites when we spend it with his family, and that is what we will be doing this year. Next year we are cross country skiing from a cabin in Gol in Norway. I also very much enjoy the time preparing for Christmas, baking Gingerbread cookies with my two boys.’

Johny Midnight Artist and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham (gallerymidnight.com) ‘Christmas morning for me usually entails feeling really sick. It is more than likely that I will have eaten far too many Quality Street chocolates and nuts the night before. Opposite my childhood house there was a field for grazing cows. The deal was that we were not allowed to get up until the cows had mooed twice. My parents always tried to leave the decorating until a week before the big day as well. I made it my duty to go to the woods and bring back the holy and ivy. I wanted the house to feel like something out of a Dickensian movie, so one year I decided to use real candles instead of electric lights, which I sellotaped to the tree and lit. It was a very memorable warm and cosy Christmas, but the firemen said I was a very stupid boy! Christmas nowadays is spent with my threeyear-old daughter and is all about family being together.’ Johny Midnight: a self portrait

‘December is a busy time for me as Christmas Day is one of the two days a year that the surgery [David Cuffe Vets] is not open. We work right through the festive holidays just incase a greedy dog has overindulged on Christmas Day and managed to covertly steal some chocolate or cooked bones, which they can not stomach. I have toyed with the idea of opening all day on Christmas Eve (we stay open until lunchtime) but I think people have other things on their mind than trips to the vets. I am also very excited that myself and my team are involved with many of the local festive events. This year, the Abbeville Road Christmas Fair [12 December, 4pm-7pm] promises to be extra special. We have a Christmas-themed fancy dress costume for dogs and I am rather looking forward to seeing if anyone can top the bread roll dachshund of last year! My practice manager Hannah is a fantastic singer and she entertains the children, as well as getting them all to cheer for the pet that they want to win. On the big day, I visit my brother in Oxford, traveling with my dog. My best tip for keeping animals calm on long car journeys is to stop every 90 minutes to give them a break and a walk. Ensure that you are out of the car for at least 20 minutes. On New Year’s Eve, the surgery is open until lunchtime, after this, I tend to pop home to attend to the mammoth preparations before my entire family descends upon the house for the evenings celebrations.’ Hannah Curwood, David Cuffe & Associates’ practice manager, adds: Christmas in the UK is still something of a novelty to me. I’m originally from New Zealand so I find the lead up to Christmas here pretty magical. I am impressed by all of the Clapham dog owners who remain committed to ensuring their dogs still get a good run around the every day, despite Baltic temperatures!

Patrick Kinmonth and Mario Testino shooting for Burberry

The backstory Patrick Kinmonth is probably the most famous man you’ve never heard of. Winner of The Wall Street Journal’s 2012 Innovator of the Year award, and described by his good friend Anna Wintour as ‘truly a renaissance man’, he is also credited with suggesting to his longterm creative partner, fashion photographer Mario Testino, that he should, perhaps, focus on portraiture. Kinmonth, in his own words, ‘has his finger in so many pies – he [may as well be] making the pie himself.’ To give his illustrious CV the justice it deserves would make for a somewhat stilted 10,000 word piece. The highlights will have to suffice, skimming only the surface of Kinmonth’s limitless creativity and skill as a film and art director, painter, author, decorator and exhibition curator, as well being one of the most acclaimed set and costume designers of his generation, spanning opera, photography and dance. Having achieved prominence as features editor and then arts editor of British Vogue, after winning its talent competition in his early 20s, he has subsequently curated some landmark Testino exhibitions, including Portraits at

the National Portrait Gallery and Diana, Princess of Wales at Kensington Palace, as well as designing and curating two comprehensive retrospectives of his good friend’s work in Boston and Beijing. Other notable achievements as a creative director include Valentino: Master of Couture, which opened to much fanfare at Somerset House last year, as well as fashion campaigns for brands such as Burberry and Gucci. In 1992, Kinmonth created his first stage and costume designs for opera and has since designed more than 20 productions in venues around the world, from Teatro alla Scala in Milan to Matsumoto in Japan. Making his opera directional debut in 2008 by conceiving a critically-acclaimed staging of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly for Cologne Opera, he directed and designed sets and costumes for myriad performances to follow.

The innovator These past achievements are hugely impressive, but we are not here to talk about all that. Kinmonth is currently in the planning stages of his latest production, Haydn’s The Creation, which he will be staging at Marylebone’s Ambika P3 in December, as well as preparing for his latest exhibition, entitled ET IN ARCADIA EGO, due to be staged at the Maestro Arts gallery. Located in Riverside Quarter, Maestro Arts is an international arts management company providing representation for conductors, soloists, composers, visual artists, lecturers, stage designers and directors. To showcase the work of its established artists, as well as local talents, Maestro Arts also includes a striking gallery which features works by Joan Dubique, Alexander Polzin and Claude Troin, as well as Kinmonth. ‘So sorry I’m late,’ Patrick smiles breezily as he waltzes into his charmingly cluttered Kensington-based studio, all of 30 seconds behind schedule (he was on the phone to Mario). We cross the studio’s hall to his wife’s (acclaimed still-life photographer Tessa Traeger) pod to get some peace and quiet. Tessa is engrossed at her kitchen table. ‘I started thinking about the statement: ET IN ARCADIA EGO [I too in Arcadia] when I was researching my new production of Daphne by Strauss for the Opera of Toulouse a couple of years ago,’ begins Patrick, before launching into a fascinating and intriguing train of thought illustrating the conception of ideas behind his most recent art works. ‘Poussin’s great mystery painting The Arcadian Shepherds (of which there are several versions) shows a tomb with this inscription in Arcadia being contemplated by shepherds. It seems that they are struggling to come to terms with the fact that even in the most beautiful and perfect of times and places, death has to be present as part of life. ‘Apart from the fact that there seems to be a fascinating explanation for this painting which involves the Daphne myth (whereby she is transformed into a laurel tree after Apollo falls in love with her, either to save her from his sexual advances or, as in the opera, to give her a kind of immortality), the general idea of a tree symbolising life after death, or accompanying the dead on their journey in cypress-filled graveyards as in Arnold Böcklin’s wonderfully theatrical painting The Isle of the Dead, became something intensely evocative for me.’ Kinmonth explains that this exhibition traces his line of thought, using marble itself as a kind of immortal touchstone, images of moths and repeated images of cypress trees – all of which have poetic associations with our passage through life to death. ‘It is also one of the

central obsessions of opera as an art form, (the collision of music and image around the moment of death is one of opera’s most persistent destinations), and the images and objects in this exhibition have arisen from a contemplation of this theme, arising from my own immersion in the medium,’ he adds, thoughtfully. With one hand slicking back his silver-fox mane, Patrick is quick to launch next into the specifics of his venture with Vocal Futures and Haydn’s The Creation. Vocal Futures is a foundation with a mission to connect young people, many of them from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, with landmark works of classical music. Set up by Suzi Digby OBE, it seeks to encourage a new audience (mainly 15-25 year olds) to come to classical arts against a backdrop of an aging audience. ‘Suzi sees music as a way to reach out to all sorts of people who are isolated,’ says Kinmonth. ‘Most of us came to classical music very young and it just seems that there are a whole mass of people drawn to the genre who have a lot of musical talent. But the power of that music is much greater than any specific career choice you might have and I think that’s one of A sketch by Patrick Kinmonth

the things we were noticing: that people nowadays, because there’s so much pressure to get on some bandwagon or another and to decide really early what you want to be and how you want to be it, that you cut out very early everything that isn’t totally associated with that thing. But, of course, an understanding of these amazing works of art helps us to be whoever we want to be. They are windows into the human soul. It’s terrible if people say, “I’m not looking in that window”.’ The three-tier

of people struggle with. It’s a fulfilment of that very wise phrase: there’s only one thing worse than not getting what you want, and that’s getting it. I saw that repeatedly. With fame comes the problem of privacy and having to stand up for yourself in public to defend what you do. I was very happy just being creative and getting on with it.’

The future

programme, from young aspiring musicians to luminaries in their field, provides a support network which Kinmonth hopes will create a ripple effect among communities. He was first introduced to the performance gig by Jasper Conran after he came to see a painting exhibition of his. Conran was asked to design costumes for the Royal Ballet and, after seeing Kinmonth’s paintings, asked him to collaborate on a set design based on the works. The rest, as they say, is history. ‘I said yes and that’s what we did,’ he says. ‘We joined our ideas together and suddenly I found myself in the world of the theatre. And I don’t think that bug ever let me go.’

The fame Despite all the big name collaborations and headline grabbing exhibitions, Kinmonth’s name, somehow, has remained off the mainstream radar. ‘I actually feel very happy about it,’ he laughs, and he seems to mean it. ‘I was just happy about doing the work. I just happen to work with considerably famous people all the time. I have done literally hundreds and hundreds of photographs with Mario [Testino], Snowdon or David Bailey, as well as Bruce Weber or even my wife Tessa whom I met through Vogue.’ ‘Mario and I have stayed in touch creatively and as friends; I’m seeing him this weekend in Paris. It’s funny – he was absolutely determined that fashion was his thing but I pointed out to him that longevity in photography comes through portraiture. And it’s great to do both, but it’s better to do portraiture than not. And I think, as time goes on, he will be one of our premier portrait photographers – although he probably already is!’ ‘One of the things that shaped my early life was a great suspicion of fame. Working at Vogue and doing all of that made me think that being famous wasn’t that great,’ Patrick sagely adds. ‘I think it’s a problem that a lot

All that is gradually changing; ‘Suddenly it’s me who has to stand up and be counted,’ he says. And as well as working on his operatic productions, I’m speaking to Kinmonth just days before the opening of a Fendi exhibition in Milan [Making Dreams: Fendi and the Cinema], for which he has directed the exhibit as well as produced a short film, Ampitheatre. We talk about the issues of creating dynamic fashion exhibitions and his use of digital animation to combat the static nature of shows of this type. Referring to his recent Valentino: Master of Couture show at Somerset House, where the audience became the shifting runway, moving image is becoming an increasingly absorbing hobby and interest for Kinmonth. His ‘little film company’ called The Visual Clinic has produced a quite extraordinary piece for the upcoming Fendi exhibition exploring the brand’s connection to film and fur. Upon hearing that the world renowned Italian film set Cinecittà (where the likes of Gangs of New York was shot) was closing down to become a museum, he felt compelled to explore the connection between Fendi, film and fur. ‘Finding ways, even if it’s subliminal, to bring clothes to life is very important. The exhibition explores how Fendi has made a huge contribution to a lot of films made in Italy and Hollywood by very often supplying the first call for fur for movies. Fendi has a huge cultural restoration programme going on, starting with the Fontana di Trevi. And Karl Lagerfeld has done a fantastic job reflecting that interest.’ So, has Wintour hit that nail on the head, I ask? ‘Patrick takes multi-tasking to new levels,’ she said. ‘At any given moment he might be writing an evocative magazine article, designing a museum exhibition that will challenge the way we think about the history of fashion, art directing a global advertising campaign for a fashion brand, or designing and directing opera... He is truly a renaissance man.’ ‘Anna’s very kind,’ he laughs. ‘But the point is this: it’s not true that artists have been only one thing. This is a relatively recent idea which became an obsession of the Romantic Movement: if you’re a poet, you’re a poet, if you’re a painter, you’re a painter. It doesn’t have anything to do with the history of art over the last 100 years. But, of course, people become quite suspicious. People question how someone can be so diverse but really good at doing it. But I’ve concentrated very hard for 40 years on being an artist so I haven’t notched myself into one place.’ ‘Fingers in many pies’ may be an apt description of Kinmonth’s impressive career. But, fortunately, it seems the humble kind is still the only bake he has mastered. n

ET IN ARCADIA EGO will run from 28 November until 29 January 2014 at Maestro Arts gallery. Riverside Quarter Eastfields Avenue, SW18 1LP. The Really Helpful Club (reallyhelpfulclub.com) is an infinitely useful resource for smart, sensible women. The members’ forum, for which it is free to register, enables you to reach out beyond your immediate network of friends to share great ideas and your best recommendations in a friendly, welcoming environment. More and more women are benefitting from the RHC, a trusted new best friend.

Among friends The Really Helpful Club (RHC) is an indispensable online resource for smart, sensible women to share great ideas and helpful tips in a world where inspired solutions can be hard to find. Recently founded by Sarah Austin, The Really Helpful Club enables women to extend their network beyond their usual circle of friends and family for invaluable advice and recommendations. It is fast-becoming a bookmarked favourite on iPads and smart phones across the capital and beyond; Sarah explains that the site has become an important part of women’s lives, developing in ways she would never have imagined initially. ‘This is what is really fantastic about the club,’ she says. ‘The site is becoming increasingly influential and accomplishing everything it set out to do and more. Women of all ages are drawn together by the common thread of sharing tips and recommendations to ensure they get the very best out of life for themselves and their families.’

opportunities. Recently, a member was looking for part-time assistance in her Fulham-based search business. This topic rapidly generated significant interest, being viewed by more than 400 members in a very short period of time. The employer hired not just one but two Really Helpful Club members to fulfill her need. It has quickly become obvious to Sarah that the next development she should focus on is to create a separate area on the site to allow likeminded, well-educated and talented women access to exciting opportunites. They might be looking for a career change, a voluntary role or a way of rediscovering the workplace, perhaps after children have flown the nest, or if younger children have started school, freeing up extra time – the RHC is a unique way of connecting women with each other.

Valued opinions and exclusive benefits

The power and reach ‘The RHC network is strong, with new bonds being formed every day,’ Sarah tells us. One such success story speaks volumes, when a member posted the following comment: ‘A couple of months ago, I asked if anyone could recommend a private chef/ caterer who could cook in our home for a special dinner party that we were hosting. Thanks to this post, I came across the perfect chef. She was absolutely amazing and provided us with the most delicious three-course meal, plus canapés. She then went on to recommend a waiter who looked after us incredibly well throughout the evening and even cleaned up the kitchen before silently slipping out the door. It was quite literally effortless entertaining – restaurant quality food, but in the comfort of our own home. The most perfect evening!’ Sarah astutely identifies a key factor of contemporary society: ‘I noticed that sometimes you have to go above and beyond your own network to a wider audience. One person simply cannot have the answers to everything. Equally, you don’t want to go around every single friend you have asking them the same question.’ The Residents’ Journal heartily agrees.

The site is buzzing with original and innovative gift ideas for the festive period, with women sharing tailored and thoughtful inspiration that is not being talked about in magazines and on department store comment sites. The attraction of the RHC being that the ideas proffered are from other women just like you, whose opinion you value and trust. Businesses are also choosing to support The Really Helpful Club, offering its members exclusive opportunities and bespoke incentives to reward their valued loyalty. Whether you are looking for inspiration for presents, holidays, or perhaps a book recommendation for that tricky to please family member, the RHC is a rich resource offering a wealth of insight. Sarah hopes to see you posting soon. n

Katie Randall spends some quality time in Battersea discovering the joy of handcrafting at The Old School Club

- 24 -

‘T

here is a wave or a trend where people are making things,’ Inma Goodhew – cofounder and director of The Old School Club – tells me, over a cup of tea and a wedge of delicious carrot cake. ‘It could be due to the recession; people do not want to spend too much money on things that they could actually make themselves. The idea is that so many people want to learn to do new things […] and my objective is that I can help the community – I can help parents and kids to be creative.’ Sitting here with Inma, surrounded by beads and buttons, fabric and flowers, it’s hard not to feel creative in the rustic-styled, Battersea-based craft space. Established earlier this year, Inma runs a multifaceted business, which operates with the individual in mind. She combines her love for handmade things with a drive to run her own business and serve the local community. The result is The Old School Club – a studio space which runs a series of craft workshops, classes and courses for adults or children, alongside a kids’ crèche (yes, there is a crèche!), a tea and coffee station (complete with Tea Pigs tea, Bottle Green cordials and locally-made treats from Crayve Cakes) and tutorials and project ideas via a popular blog. There is also a fantastic studio space to rent for individual projects – perfect in particular for parents who need space, peace and quiet to work, while their kids are engaged in activities downstairs. With a light, airy atmosphere and high ceilings, The Old School Club feels like an artist’s studio, nudging visitors into the open spaces of possibility, imagination and inspiration – whether they choose to sew, knit, paint or craft. Always with her clients in mind, Inma has also been careful to choose real home comforts to furnish the space, creating a ‘fusion’ interior style which unites a large warehouse space with comfy sofas, cosy heaters, hand-painted crèche murals by Nicola at BB Berkeley and rich, colourful fabrics piled high on the shelves. Despite its location on an industrial site, the club is full of warmth and creative energy, resulting in something quite unexpected on the inside. ‘I won’t lie,’ Inma says, ‘I have had a few people wander up outside and gasp; you can see on their faces, they’re thinking “Oh, this isn’t The Ritz”, but when they come inside, they love the space. ‘There are a hundred businesses here, it’s a great hub. The guy opposite me does furniture restoration and there is an upholsterer in the building, as well as a caterer and a cake business. It’s a really great atmosphere. I want the people who come here to immediately get a sense of what we are doing or trying to achieve.’ For Inma, the seeds of the idea came to her during maternity leave from a 15-year IT career – so having a family-friendly business (in terms of both her own family and her clients) has always been a priority. ‘You know when you do all of the baby things to pass the time – baby massage, baby yoga and baby swimming. It’s really good fun because you socialise and spend time with your little one. I started looking for things that I could do with my son, but for me too. There were arts and crafts for kids or it was just for mums and there was no childcare – I had to leave my son somewhere else.’ So, taking matters into her own hands, Inma started a smallscale project from home, hiring a nanny in the mornings to look after the children whilst mums engaged in a session of sewing or crochet in the next room. ‘This gave me the idea about doing something a bit special for the mums,’ she says, ‘A place where parents, people who want to do something creative but don’t have the space to do it, can come […] A place for everyone.’ It’s clear to anyone spending time in The Old School Club that the business is as much about community as it is about craft. ‘For me, my life [in Valencia] was based around my friends, family and community and I remember everything I did was around my neighbourhood. It’s really important to have that. The support that community can give you is important.

Craft bees busy at work at The Old School Club

‘[Here] I can help other mums who want to start their own businesses, as I have space upstairs for people to rent. For anyone who wants to start something but is worried about finding a space or childcare while they work – I can offer them both in a warm and supportive environment.’ With so many options for residents to choose from, The Old School Club looks set to become something of a local institution for everyone from kids (I observed a fun sewing class for four to 12-year-olds) and parents, to groups of friends and individuals. Inma tells me that sewing and furniture up-cycling are two of the most popular activities at the moment, which also run as evening classes for those working during the day. ‘Furniture painting comes because of the trend for up-cycling. Painting furniture is very rewarding because you can reanimate something very easily.’ To borrow the words of author Maya Angelou, ‘You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have’ – and with Inma and her team at The Old School Club, south Londoners have been given the perfect place to rediscover their very own creative and artistic crafting skills, again and again. n

Scoot away Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a micro scooter and the Journal predicts you will be seeing a lot more of them around the local area in the New Year. Micro Scooters UK was founded by two mums, Anna Gibson and Philippa Gogarty, in 2006 after they discovered how much easier it was to get from A to B with their young children using tough, lightweight scooters instead of buggies. The trend has taken hold, and the brand, which advocates safety when scooting around, has reportedly won more awards than any other competitor. They also sell scooters for people of any age; if Grandpa has his way, it won’t just be the kids who unwrap a t-bar-shaped package this Christmas.

Can anyone recommend an interior designer?

I’ve done some of their 5k, 10km runs and they are very well organised.

I’m about to complete on a new build house that has some unusually shaped rooms. I want to give the place character whilst trying to keep a sense of space (it’s fairly small). Can anyone recommend a good interior designer who works in the Clapham area? Thank you.

Best toy kitchen for an 18-month-old? My husband and I would like to buy my daughter a toy kitchen for Christmas. There are lots out there, are there any of these more suitable than others for children under three? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

Hi, Try Wendy dos Santos at Interior Elegance London… or Clare Burrage at Clara Bee. Have seen the handywork of both these lovely local mums and would highly recommend. Happy designing

Re: Best toy kitchen for an 18-month-old? Fri Nov 22, 2013 12:40 am I’d recommend the Ikea one. It’s wooden and you can get lovely accessories for it too. I know so many happy toddlers who love it.

Family Santa run? Hi. I may be hallucinating but I recall a post about a holiday run for charity this December, somewhere in South London. There was a five or 10k for adults, and something very short (400m?) for little ones. It might be in connection with one of the churches?

It’s an absolute bargain at the moment at £60 for the bottom and top bit (usually £90) and it’s even available for on-line delivery so you don’t have to brave the shop!

I’ve tried to search the site, but haven’t found anything. Thanks so much! Re: Family Santa run?

Only downside is that you have to build it, but I left that to my husband!!

The art of property Currell Residential on Lavender Hill showcases an impressive local talent

C

hris Currell, of Currell Residential, is well-known for his interest in contemporary art. The Currell Collection in Islington is a prime example of Chris’s passion; an impressive portfolio of emerging talent and established artists from the UK, Europe and Latin America. Chris’s enthusiasm for supporting breakthrough talent has filtered down into each Currell Residential office, and on Lavender Hill potential house hunters are in for a real treat, as the walls of the light and airy office form the perfect backdrop for the latest collection from young local artist Lucienne O’Mara.

Growing up in south London, the daughter of a painter, Lucienne has always been fascinated by art. After finishing school, she studied Fine Art Painting at City & Guilds of London Art School where she received a first-class degree. Her unique and expressive artwork caught the attention of Chris Currell for his personal collection before being developed into a mini-exhibition at the Lavender Hill office. The collection, which Lucienne has been working on for several years, is crafted in watercolour and looks at the

The Local Lowdown Emily Hayward, head of Savills Wandsworth Lettings, discusses upcoming local developments

‘W

andsworth is a national favourite, with British tenants making up 75 per cent of the lettings market compared to 61 per cent of international tenants across London as a whole. Still conveniently situated for central London and the City, Wandsworth offers open space and a community feel, which can be often lacking in other parts of the capital.

There is a lot in the pipeline for Wandsworth, with a £1 billion project to transform the high street already underway. The redevelopment of the Ram Brewery is central to the scheme – for generations the six-acre site has been inaccessible to the public, but is now set to become an animated waterfront quarter including more than 650 new homes, bars, restaurants, shops and offices. We’re also particularly looking forward to the launch of The Filaments by Mount Anvil in spring 2014. Formerly a factory making gas mantles, the development will provide luxury one to four-bedroom apartments in the heart of Wandsworth that are beautifully landscaped with illuminated podium gardens, pedestrian walkways and the opportunity to purchase private parking. A quarter of the stock is being sold as buy-to-let, and Savills are delighted to be the onsite sales agent. On the lettings side, we’ve currently got a three-bedroom apartment available to rent at £550 per week. Since early November, we’ve seen families begin to look for February lets, which has been much earlier than usual. Typically tenants begin their search two months in advance, but with such high demand for ‘best in class’ stock, applicants are coming to us earlier than ever to make sure they secure a home they’re happy with for the year ahead. As a result, we’ve done a number of oneoff viewings on properties not yet on the open market. An example of a stunning family home available right now is Crockerton Road; a spacious seven-bedroom house in the

The Filaments

Magdalen Estate, on the market for £1,840 per week. It is ideal for entertaining, with an open-plan kitchen leading out onto a mature garden, and even has self-contained accommodation with a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom on the lower ground floor, perfect for a live-in nanny. The area is renowned for its many good local schools, and recent research from Savills (in collaboration with the Good Schools Guide) found Wandsworth to be extremely well represented, with four of the top 50 schools in London all in the local area. These include Northcote Lodge, Thomas’s and Broomwood Hall primary schools as well as Putney High secondary school.’ n
