Dear Resident, ‘If music be the food of love, play on.’ Whether you are in the mood to be amorous or not this February, a surfeit of musical stimulation is no bad thing. There can be no better way to satisfy auditory cravings than with a visit to one of the borough’s arts venues, either Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) or Omnibus Clapham. The latter will be presenting its popular Classic Sundays throughout February, showcasing fresh, new orchestral talent; read more on page 13. The BAC will play host to Theatre Ad Infinitum this month, as it takes its musical cabaret on tour across the UK. Praised by The Guardian, Ballad of the Burning Star tells the story of ‘an enraged Israeli [who] executes a story of victimhood, persecution, aggression and love.’ Read more on page 15. Excellent food is also requisite this month. Writer Laura-Jo Thorpe heartily recommends securing a table by the window at Augustine Kitchen on Battersea Bridge Road for special meals on 14 February, as well as for post-January detox treats (p. 17). The cuisine, hailing from the owner’s home town of Évian, France, is both rich and indulgent; the perfect antidote to winter blues. Also in this edition, local gent about town Bill Rayburn presents his unique perspective on London living in London Dispatch: Driving and Girls (p. 19) and I meet Helen Wakeman-Jones, owner of WKM Productions, the woman responsible for throwing some of the capitals most memorable shindigs and parties (p. 8).

Back to the source Source Battersea, which opened at the tail end of last year, has caught our attention. Under head chef James Adams, the kitchen serves up seasonal delights, as well as daily rillettes, seafood chowder and bourbon bread & butter pudding. Guests will also be invited to quaff filtered water from the well underneath the restaurant and all profits from the sale of this water will be donated to Magic Breakfast, a charity funding breakfasts for schoolchildren all over London.

Fair funds The figures are in and the Wandsworth Friends of Trinity Hospice’s annual Christmas fair at the Battersea Arts Centre, sponsored by Knight Frank, raised £23,460 for Trinity Hospice at the end of 2013. The sum could sponsor a Trinity nurse for nearly six months. This year’s fair will be held on Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 November 2014 at St Luke’s Church, 194 Ramsden Road, SW12 8RQ.

Rock on? There has been a lot of buzz surrounding entertainment company Live Nation’s proposal to host a concert on Clapham Common this June. The event could see some of the world’s biggest rock stars play in Lambeth and will ‘boost our budget at a time of drastic Government cuts,’ explains Cllr Sally Prentice, cabinet member for culture and leisure. The application by Live Nation to the council’s Licensing Sub-Committee for an event on one section of Clapham Common was heard on 14 January. The council has granted said licence to the promoters, but reiterates that a concert will raise funds that will be pumped back into the common and other Lambeth parks. The Friends of Clapham Common (FCC) has sent strong objections to the sub-committee due to concerns about noise levels, as well as the added strain on the common and public transport.

WANDSWORTH

Step into business Running from 3-8 February, Wandsworth Enterprise Week aims to assist both established businesses and start-ups to flourish and grow. It will also offer advice to locals considering setting up their own business. Speakers are set to include Laura Tenison, founder and MD of JoJo Maman Bébé, Daily Telegraph columnist Rose Prince, who started the Pocket Bakery from her Battersea home and now supplies Fortnum and Mason, and Sam Harrison, who co-owns restaurants with Rick Stein. Head down for a spot of inspiration

Places are free but must be booked in advance. Priority will be given to Wandsworth businesses and residents. To find out more about any of these events, or to book a place, visit wandsworthenterpriseweek.biz or email wew@wandsworth.gov.uk

Safety first Wandsworth has yet again been crowned inner London’s safest borough. Reported crime levels were down by more than 11 per cent compared to last year. Most of the borough’s town centres also saw lower crime levels. In Clapham Junction, offences were down by 12 per cent, while in Balham they fell 17 per cent. Unfortunately, this trend was not repeated in Wandsworth town centre, which saw an eight per cent increase. The council will now be working with the police to quickly identify measures to tackle the discrepancy. The council’s public safety spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook said: ‘The council works extremely closely with the Met to tackle and prevent criminal activity and bring offenders to justice. This support ranges from providing a highly effective CCTV network to paying for a special safer parks team to patrol local parks and open spaces.’

Local councillor awarded an MBE Many Wandsworth residents have been decorated by the Queen in her annual New Year Honours List, including Michele Harris, head of Wandsworth Council’s Family Recovery Project, who has been awarded an MBE in recognition of her ‘services to children and families’. Michele has spent most of her career in Wandsworth, dedicating 40 years of her life working in social care. She joined the council in 1972. ‘It’s my privilege to serve Michele Harris my community and I feel very lucky to be recognised for doing the job I love,’ says Michele. Another local to receive honours was writer and presenter Sandi Toksvig, who lives on a houseboat in Wandsworth. Sandi was awarded an OBE for services to broadcasting. Congratulations all around!

Transforming basic ideas into multifaceted concepts and delivering memorable events with flair is all part of the day job for Helen Wakeman-Jones. As is mingling with Naomie Harris and Sir Trevor McDonald to honour the late Nelson Mandela

S

ir Trevor McDonald addresses the crowd at The Park Lane Hotel, Piccadilly. He shares poignant personal memories of Nelson Mandela garnered over the years, as well as stories from his significant interview with the world statesman and philanthropist when he was released from prison after 27 years. McDonald was the first journalist who was allowed to conduct a formal interview with the iconic revolutionary, and his musings of the man visibly stir the room. With gravitas and poise, the broadcaster delivers his speech to an enraptured audience attending a gala dinner and screening of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. The room is filled with famous faces: chiefly Naomie Harris, who plays Mandela’s first wife Winnie Madikizela in the film, as well as its coproducer David Thompson. The aforementioned scene occurred on 8 December 2013 and was organised by one woman: Helen Wakeman-Jones. Nelson Mandela, or ‘Tata’, meaning father, had passed away three days prior to the tribute screening on 5 December. WKM Productions organises high-profile corporate events, large charitable events and private celebratory and family-oriented occasions across London, the UK and Europe. Its Balham-based

founder Helen, an endearing former banker who hails from Wales, proudly describes her greatest achievements to date, of which the Mandela screening, gala dinner and charity auction is one. With all eyes focused on Sir Trevor McDonald – who resides locally in East Sheen and whom Helen describes as ‘wonderfully humble and gracious’ – as well as on the ‘down-to-earth and beautiful’ Naomie Harris, Helen proclaims that British talent is making waves internationally. ‘It is great to see talent, London-born and bred, promoted across the world in a tribute to one of the great figureheads for peace,’ she says. ‘I was honoured to be involved in the organisation of the event and it made me feel proud to live and work in London.’ Never one to restrict herself to one or two big events a year, Helen also worked on the concept for the 21st anniversary of the Vauxhall Cross-based foundation The Big Issue in 2012. ‘That was an interesting one,’ explains Helen. ‘The company wanted to convey some home truths to highlight how the homeless are ostracised by and large in society.’ Starting with the idea that everyone is only three pay cheques away from being homeless – the idea that many situations can result in a person having to give up a settled home life, not just those we typically assume lead to a life on the streets – Helen developed ‘reverse Monopoly’, the crowning glory of this branding exercise being a major social event. ‘Everyone knows Monopoly, the game in which players travel around London acquiring property with a shake of the dice. I wanted to take this idea and reverse it, as the homeless people that The Big Issue work with have obviously lost their homes and feel as though they are separate from quotidian society,’ says Helen. The blank white venue space swept with red lighting effects featured a large installation in which some of the vendors who work with The Big Issue had highlighted areas where they had been forced to ‘sleep rough’. Think the bushes by Hyde Park Corner tube station replacing Oxford Street, or an abandoned warehouse in Deptford in place of the Old Kent Road. Chance cards as well as community chest notes were strategically placed on ‘reverse Monopoly’ poseur tables throughout the venue, dramatising many of the situations faced by ‘ordinary’ people who live on the streets. Statements such as: ‘You have returned to the UK after an overseas posting with the armed forces and your wife has left you. You have had to move out of the family home,’ and ‘you are self-employed and your biggest corporate client has gone into liquidation,’ reminded guests how easily desperate situations can arise.

Helen proclaims that British talent is making waves internationally. ‘It is great to see talent, Londonborn and bred, promoted across the world’ A big red house mimicking the plastic hotels from the game sat in the middle of the venue in which attendees could post donations or direct debit forms. Social responsibility drives WKM Productions, along with a steely focus to deliver the very best results for clients. Helen works with charities to raise six figure sums and has helped to raise millions for charity over the years. She is also always present at events to ensure any glitches can be tackled efficiently and swiftly. ‘My job is very busy, but that is just the way I like it,’ Helen smiles. ‘I normally take a few months out each year, in July and August when work is quieter, and travel around Asia with my family. It allows me time to unwind, explore and seek inspiration for the year ahead.’ Growing up in Wales, Helen moved to London for work in her early twenties. As a City high-flyer for the first 20 years of her career, she notes that she always put a creative spin on her deals; organising events for clients at the end of signing contracts and thinking outside the box. Laying roots in Balham, she admits that the community atmosphere was what - 10 -

initially drew her to the area. ‘It’s like a village in London, and it is nice to know your neighbours. I think the people on our street have come to know my family as the crazy people who host a ridiculously overblown Halloween party each year. We all decorate the house, inviting friends and family, both adults and children, and everyone arrives in ghoulish costume.’ One of her next projects in 2014 fosters community and offers a networking platform

for a specific United Kingdom resident. ‘I always create an annual St David’s Day celebration showcasing Welsh talent for Welsh residents of London,’ she explains. ‘It is a fun evening with live entertainment which presents people with the opportunity to connect – so watch this space. ‘This year, I have already secured the fantastic Caroline Sheen, cousin of Michael Sheen, and a critically acclaimed West End star, who has also appeared in - 11 -

Torchwood and the Academy Award-winning film Les Miserables, a full Welsh male voice choir and some special appearances by well-known Welsh names.’ Whether she’s filling a ballroom with the varied hues of a sunset, finally completing its cycle bright red – just in time for the headline live band to take to the stage – or aiding her clients in venue sourcing, which she offers free of charge, Helen is a creative force to be reckoned with and a bundle of positive energy. Working on gala balls, award ceremonies, Christmas parties, summer events and charity fundraisers, the common thread throughout is her dedication to creating a concept that is ‘meaningful’, leaving a lasting impression on guests. Organising events which prove the hottest ticket in town; the Journal hopes that a few of our readers might even make it down to the Welsh celebration night to rock out to powerful vocals and munch on moreish Welsh cakes; failing that, we all know where we want to spend Halloween in 2014. n

Home is where the heart is

A night with soul

A force to be reckoned with but also a thing of great beauty, nature and the elements are the subject of FossFineArt’s up-coming exhibition Elemental. Showcasing the dramatic seascape paintings of Nicola Rose, who painted on location in Pendean, Cornwall, for the build-up, duration and aftermath of St Jude’s storm in 2013, this exhibit highlights not only the power of Mother Nature but also the artist’s unerring dedication to her subject. Not to be missed, Rose’s works will inspire and enchant.

The Pump House Gallery will be presenting a major touring exhibition by Hetain Patel this month. At Home will include existing and newly commissioned work by the artist. The concept for the show arose when Patel starting taking self-portraits. Using a technique called Rotoscoping, Patel will introduce animation and movement into his practice for the first time. To accompany the exhibition, a series of free family workshops on Sundays (11am-3pm), will also be on offer, covering a variety of topics.

The Bedford in Balham needs no introduction, but perhaps its band night raising funds for First Touch (a recent winner of the Residents’ Journal charitable donations competition) does. The evening will begin at 7.30pm, with jazz and soul band Bodkin Lane gracing the stage at 8.30pm. Last year saw £2,000 raised for the charity and the organisers, as well as supporter DJ Jonesy’s Jukebox, hope to see just as much donated this year.

Tickets cost £10 plus a £1 booking fee and must be bought in advance via musicglue.com/bodkinlane. The Ballroom at The Bedford, 77 Balham Hill, SW12 9HD

A comedy of manners

Ralph Fiennes and Felicity Jones star in an engaging new film based on the awardwinning novel by Claire Tomalin, The Invisible Woman. It charts the somewhat rocky relationship between Charles Dickens (Fiennes) and Ellen Ternan (Jones), a woman whose name has all but been erased from the annals of history. The pair met when Ternan played a small part in one of the writer’s plays. Coming to cinemas nationwide in early February, locals can catch this intriguing tale at the Clapham Picturehouse.

Set to grace Omnibus Clapham this month are Australian flute and guitar duo Bronte Hudnott and Andrey Lebedev, multi awardwinning musicians who met in their home country as students at the Royal Academy of Music. The performance will begin at 4.30pm and will traverse a wide range of classical pieces from Histoire du Tango by Astor Piazzolla to The House Carpenter by Robert Beaser. Having performed all over the world, this is a rare opportunity to catch the young duo in the local area before they sky rocket.

The Southside Players, a non-professional theatre group with 25 years’ experience, bring compelling drama to your doorstep. The company’s upcoming production of The Misanthrope, penned by French playwright Molière and adapted by British writer Martin Crimp, promises to be thrilling. Alceste (the misanthrope) meets his match when he falls in love with Jennifer, which provides the starting point for a gripping duel of wits.

Star of

WONDER Award-winning, controversial and comedic show Ballad of the Burning Star comes to the Battersea Arts Centre this month

B

allad of the Burning Star began life as an idea for a play that examined the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine through family stories. The actors at Theatre Ad Infinitum realised that they wanted to find an unconventional and extraordinary way to tell this story – something they’d never done before; something that would surprise both them and their audiences. Delving into a world of drag and cabaret may not seem like the obvious choice, but in rounding up an international all-female chorus, Theatre Ad Infinitum has created a unique way to take spectators on a tragic and explosive journey to the Holy Land. Following-on from its success at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013, Theatre Ad Infinitum is taking its new award-winning musical play Ballad of the Burning Star on tour this month, telling the story of one Jewish boy’s struggle to come to terms with the conflict in his homeland. The Residents’ Journal talked to star and director Nir Paldi.

norms in parts of the Middle East. It’s certainly our most ambitious project to date. Why should people go to see Ballad? It’s high-quality, physical, storytelling theatre. We’re also working with Adam Pleeth who has composed, mixed and referenced an incredible score; add to that beautiful singing and vocal work, which lends the show an exciting and unique air. It’s also unusual to see a show that combines dark, poignant tragedy with laugh-out-loud comedy. We love to surprise our audiences – their experience is at the forefront of our minds when we create, so be prepared. How does the show affect the audience? It provokes discussion and debate, just as we’d hoped. I want people to leave the theatre feeling thrilled; not only captivated and excited by the theatrical experience they went through, but

How did the idea for Ballad of the Burning Star come about? I wanted to explore the identity crisis facing my homeland. In Israel, victim identity is present everywhere you turn, but what is rarely talked about is the fact that Israel has become an occupier – that we are also now the persecutors. This leaves Israelis feeling a deep-rooted discord between being the victim, historically, and being the persecutor, in a modern-day reality. Some of the stories are based on things that happened to me, some of them are true stories that happened to other people, and others are historical events that I’ve incorporated into the character’s life. How does the show differ from those Theatre Ad Infinitum has created before? We’re not only experimenting with new styles (cabaret, drag and chorus) but also new themes. Ballad is a dark and political show in many ways – we’ve found a theatrical language which will let the audience experience violence, dark humour, unpredictability, love, loss, laughter, pain and heartache – things that are everyday

also disturbed by the themes the piece is dealing with. This is the reality I grew up with, and one that still persists today. I’m hoping that somewhere within the darkness of this piece, people will be able to find some hope. n

A family affair Laura-Jo Thorpe indugles in some French fancy at Augustine Kitchen, an exciting new restaurant on Battersea Bridge Road

W

hen the opportunity arose to visit the newly established Augustine Kitchen, Battersea, I rejoiced. My first thought was that surely this would finally present a chance to sample that most quintessential of French dishes, escargot (the common garden snail to you and I). The reception upon entering Augustine’s is warm and inviting, and the tables are adorned with fresh green basil. Chalk board walls are covered with scribblings of specials, lunch menus and arrows pointing towards owner and head chef Franck Raymond’s family: his ‘very cool’ uncle, grandmother Augustine and others. I have the privilege of meeting said chef before he disappears to the kitchen to prepare his carefullythought out creations. However, he stays long enough to tell me about the inspiration for his dishes: his home region of Évian, France and family recipes passed down from grandma Augustine herself. While waiting for the first course, a homemade roll is delivered to the table, fresh from the oven. It’s a promising start to the meal; I drench it in butter while sipping sparkling white wine. The baguette is followed by our starters. My dining companion has ordered the onion soup with blue cheese, which is served in a black earthenware pot – a generous portion, ideal for a rainy Tuesday night. I am salivating over the soup, so before I lunge forward and embarrass myself, I turn my attention to my own plate. I uncover the lid to find a feast of snails in garlic butter sauce that smells divine. On tasting, I learn that the snails are lukewarm, a factor that makes the whole experience slightly disappointing. I would have preferred them hot, but maybe that’s just my palette. Still, c’est la vie, onto the next course.

I have ordered the beef fillet and when it arrives, I am stunned at how thick and juicy it looks. Set upon a bed of perfectly sautéed spinach and drizzled with a sumptuous red wine jus, this is quite possibly one of the best steaks I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Across from me, my friend tucks into roasted cod and quinoa, assuring me that the orange and rosemary sauce is simply divine – a comment she repeats so many times I am forced to ask for a sample. After a mouthful, I concur: yes, the dish is fantastic. There is a pronounced pause for breath in between the main course and dessert. Perhaps the waiting staff – who have been smiling and attentive all evening – can sense that we are both full to the brim and in need of a rest before the final course is served. Once ordered however, the pudding arrives quickly. We are impressed by the aesthetic flair of the coconut floating island in lime and vanilla custard, and chocolate mousse with caramel sauce. Considering ourselves to be dessert connoisseurs, due to many evenings spent avidly watching The Great British Bake Off and Masterchef, my guest and I concur that Franck has mastered both dishes. The waitress pours rich molten caramel sauce over my perfectly spherical chocolate mousse and I marvel at its chocolate casing, as it melts slowly into itself. Each spoonful of this dish is better than the last, with the smooth, salty caramel acting the perfect foil for the decadent dark chocolate base. To round things off, we indulge in a cognac, expertly chosen by our waitress according to our sweets. After an evening spent dining as ‘one of the Raymond family’, I sincerely consider applying to be installed in the clan permanently. n

London Dispatch:

DRIVING & GIRLS London through the eyes of an American; we get a different perspective with Bill Rayburn

H

aving lived in London for almost a year, I now feel qualified to comment that it is an incredible, energetic, vibrant city. The British are for the most part a very polite lot. Kindness, gentility, unselfishness, appearing deferential; these are all part of the make-up of the British personality, historically and today. And there is an area where these more evolved and enlightened behavioural characteristics are not only evident but required: driving. The narrow streets of London are supposed to accommodate two-way traffic. As an American, this at first was so disconcerting as to be unimaginable. If Americans were forced to navigate their roads on a regular basis in this fashion, gunplay would be a regular sight, fisticuffs would be de rigueur, and the driving experience transformed into a constant series of battles. But here in London, gentility does indeed prevail when people are behind the wheel (which is on the wrong damn side of the car, just as we are asked to drive on the wrong damn side of the road). What must occur to make these narrow throughways passable and to keep traffic ‘flowing’ is amazing, because it requires everybody to ‘do the right thing’. Unselfishness is an absolute prerequisite when driving in London. And the rules of play, which, again, seem to be universally adhered to, are unwritten. When pulling onto one of these roads, assessments must be made almost immediately. Is there another car coming my way? If so, which of us has a gap somewhere, in order to pull aside and let the other car through? In many cases, there is a space for both cars to ‘give way’, which then results in one or the other deciding to ‘do the right thing’ first. In driving around this city, I have seen and/or personally encountered only one or two instances where there was this stalemate, and no one wanted to give in. The overwhelming majority of British drivers react courteously and deferentially. Don’t get me wrong, there are still frustratingly useless, bumptious drivers over here. But far fewer than in America. Horn honking is quite rare in England. That makes sense, since much of the driving experience here involves an almost constant give-and-take. Even the rude drivers rarely invoke a horn, as the British consider it bad form to call someone so directly on their poor behaviour. In America, a scornfully

raised eyebrow versus honking a horn would be deemed a decidedly too pacifistic response to rudeness. It is also worth noting that it is very expensive to live in London and even more costly to buy a home; let alone upgrade it. Yet there are many people doing just that and the bird’s-eye view from the window of my second-storey perch in Battersea, on a street lined exclusively with Victorian homes, shows there are currently three properties within a half block that are in various stages of restoration, conversion or total gutting. Watching oversized trucks offload their multiton materials for these refurbishments into a small space with little or no margin for error, the winches and hydraulic lifts precariously swinging enormous steel beams over the tops of Mercedes and BMWs, is quite entertaining. It must be a heart-stopping scenario for the car owners to watch. These deliveries, though appearing to be logistical nightmares on the surface, are carried out with amazing ease and precision and thus far have been mishap-free. I must also take a moment to comment on British women. They are fabulous. They are unbelievably in shape. In fact, the whole city is in shape. It’s gotten to the point that when I see an overweight person, it is pause for thought. It is that rare. The women are prettier and have traffic-stopping figures in London more than anywhere I have ever observed! At first, living in Winchmore Hill in north London, I thought it was because I was in a part of the city considered to be quite ‘posh’. Then, after driving around London, the scenery, if anything, got better. It has not changed now that I live here in Battersea in south west London. Though still considered affluent, this area is home to a mind-numbing majority of attractive and healthy people. I can’t count the number of Londoners who regularly run and work out. I came here expecting a silly, naïve, even ignorant stereotype: the heavy-smoking, heavy-drinking, heavy-looking, pasty-white, yellow-toothed Brit. Simply put, that is not at all the case. Americans could take a lesson in fitness from the folks in London. These are my honest perceptions of life in London; probably the most honest thing I can say about London is that I absolutely love it. One of the greatest, if not the greatest city in the world. It is a pleasure and an honour to live here. n Illustration Bill Rayburn and his faithful hound / Russ Tudor

Prepare to bare Katie Randall trials a treatment that many view with trepidation when she visits one of south west London’s premier therapists

T

rust is an important relationship to foster with one’s beauty therapist. It takes a certain amount of courage to sit back and relax with someone you have not met before, especially when they are wielding some newfangled piece of equipment that looks as though it has just been ripped off the side of a spaceship. Or if they are throwing beauty jargon at you left, right and centre; phrases that you are certain have just been mashed together from the pages of glossies, grocery shopping lists and word on the street (what is royal jelly and its purpose, for example?). I have heard of a local lady, however, in which the faith of south west residents has been entrusted. Quietly confident and qualified in a range of treatments with more than 18 years of experience behind her, Nicola Christophi has a dedicated following across London. Women and the odd husband or two are flocking to be treated at her Skin-Kind clinic on Balham High Road (located in Movers & Shapers gym), and she is best described as a barely contained beauty secret. ‘I used to operate from a few different clinics across south west London and my lovely clientele would follow me around,’ she says. ‘Now I have set up shop in Balham as it is right in the middle of all of the salons in which I have previously been based, meaning it should be easy for my existing clients, and hopefully some new ones, to visit.’ I am here today to trial a gel peel and the latest in laser hair removal technology: MPL (that’s Multi Pulsed Light for those not in the know). Before my treatment in Nicola’s private space we sit down to discuss aims, take pictures – less frightening than it sounds, they merely showcase over time what improvements one sees from treatments – and to run through a series of forms about my health. Nicola prefers to build up a file for each client so that she can track results and ensure you get the best out of her treatments. Next up, it’s goggles on. Looking slightly like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle I lie back on the bed, arm up, and prepare for the inevitable twinge of pain. Only it does not come. I even twist my neck to see if Nicola has begun and she reassuringly smiles back; we have. I can feel a slight warmth and see a flash of light but, no pain whatsoever. Nicola explains that MPL is like supersonic IPL (Intense Pulsed Light); it works in two ways, combining both heat and light to seek out hair and stop growth at the follicle. There is no irritation to the epidermis, as seen with shaving and waxing, and the light is now so sophisticated that it only targets hair (not pigment) and is suitable for all skin types. A course of six treatments is recommended, but clients are more than welcome to try one session first to see how they feel about it. ‘I am more than happy to show people the machine and talk them through the process,’ says Nicola. ‘It revolutionised the way I looked at and undertook hair removal, so I love to show people the results they can achieve with MPL.’ I then indulge in a three-minute gel peel using salicylic and mandelic acids, which leaves my skin baby-soft. The fine grade of acid works to dissolve dead skin cells, revealing a brighter, less congested complexion; again, a course is recommended and the time that the acid sits on the skin is dependent on whether it has been exposed to this form of exfoliation before. Nicola uses worldrenowned dermatology brand SkinCeuticals and even gifts clients mini samples to try at the end of their facial; there is no pressure to buy products after treatments here. It is rare to leave a spa or salon feeling as though you have some solid answers to your beauty conundrums, but with Nicola I feel confident and prepared to tackle all of my body quibbles. It is time to open up the little black beauty book and share this contact with the rest of London. n

NINJA

Henry Hopwood-Phillips goes to see if Jackie Chan has anything on Battersea’s Simon Yeo

- 22 -

‘Y

ou know how it is. The guy teaching martial arts usually lives up the road, he once knew someone, who knew somebody else, who looked like they might know a thing or two about Karate,’ Simon starts. Yes, I nod. ‘Well, I’m not that guy.’ And Battersea-based Simon is not a man to make empty boasts. His record speaks for itself. While attending Brighton College, Simon studied Judo. Then Karate, Kung Fu and Taekwondo, later specialising in Ninjutsu, Ju Jutsu and Gracie Jiu Jitsu. ‘It was my preferred art form because I felt the movements were extensions of the natural way humans move,’ he explains. Not that he was any normal practitioner of course. ‘I was lucky enough to win gold in all the Judo championships I entered! It takes a lot of work and practice, but it has always been worth it.’ Ju Jutsu and Ninjutsu form the spine of Simon’s work. Although a merchandiser by day, his self-employed status (before getting married) enabled him to up and leave to participate in six sessions a year at the feet of the Japanese Grand Master Masaaki Hatsumi. ‘These lessons, which took me as far as Hawaii sometimes, made it possible for me to get the very rare 15th degree black belt,’ Simon says. Clearly clocking my clouded expression, he clarifies. ‘It is the highest title you can achieve under the Grand Master; most martial arts only allow a pupil to reach tenth degree.’ Not that he lets titles go to his head. In the 90s, the original Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion Royce Gracie was making a name for himself across the pond, carefully crafting Gracie Jiu-Jitsu into the supreme martial art. ‘So I spent a few years with him. It took me about 10 years to get my black belt,’ explains Simon. It did Masaaki Hatsumi a Ninja Grand Master not end there, however, the expert still continues Simon Yeo learning twice a week from world-class Gracie Jiu Jitsu players. ‘I’m now basically the martial arts equivalent of a professor, which is great.’ When he is not learning, Simon teaches. ‘When I was running my adult training class in Fulham, Bear Grylls came to me for a couple of sessions. Then, in 2008, just as he was beginning to gain notoriety, I taught him privately on his house boat in Wandsworth for two years.’ These contacts serve him well. You can see his martial choreography in Bond films and Red Bull adverts; he even does the stunts himself in an advert with Bear Grylls for Dos Equis, the Mexican beer. His hands aren’t just for fighting though. His book Ninjutsu: Secret Art of the Ninja is a top seller on Amazon, and it was a letter to the local Honeywell School inspiring kids to follow in his professional footsteps that resulted in a groundswell of support for classes. ‘Eventually, I decided to get a few kids out on Wandsworth Common and more recently at Alderbrook School. For two terms now both classes I have run have been at near full capacity,’ he enthuses. ‘I’ve got kids in two age groups, 3-6 and 6-12. The idea is to dump the rote system that has kids abandoning ship after a couple of lessons and to get them doing moves that are fun, but will be useful for self-protection at a later age. Crazy horse and sleeping crocodile are just some of the silly games we play that have real purpose behind them. ‘As the number of muggings has escalated on Northcote Road, I’ve also noted a huge surge in demand from mothers who’d like to be able to protect themselves from attack.’ Keeping the kids lean, the streets clean and the mothers mean, Simon Yeo is a bit of Godsend. n

Simon Yeo can be contacted on 07860 343 075. His website for adults interested in martial arts is yeodojo.net and for children’s classes, view ninja-kids.co.uk

A sigh of joy must have been audible across the borough this month as plans were unveiled for a treetop adventure course to grace the skyline in Battersea Park near to the adventure playground. The addition of a family-friendly high wire course, built by Go Ape, has been whispered about for months. The first adventure facility of its kind to open in central London, the course would offer stateof-the-art safety features and participants would be under close supervision by fully-trained members of staff. Suitable for children aged 6 and above, as well as parents, the next step is for Go Ape to submit a planning application, which will lead to a formal consultation with local residents.

parent trap: NappyValleynet NappyValleyNet.com has become an online sensation in the four years since founder Susan Hanage, aka Annabel, unleashed it, with more than 80,000 visits to the site. An invaluable tool for parents based in south west London seeking to swap tips and share advice, we’ve teamed up to post some of the most pressing topics posted on the site

1. Boiled basmati rice with homemade meatballs or chicken breast (pan fry) on tomato sauce ( I always make a big batch and freeze small portions) so I just need to boiled the rice when we get back from school.

Kids’ favourite recipe (One of) My New Year’s resolutions is to cook better meals for my children after school. I’m already struggling.... It’s not that I’m a rubbish cook particularly, but my repertoire has become smaller and smaller as I’d prefer them to eat rather than not eat and I don’t want to spend time and money making things that end up in the dog bowl or the bin. I’ve flicked through books and simply can’t imagine giving them beetroot coleslaw etc! Just wondering if a few of you (say 5-7 people) could give me their ultimate, fail safe, all-kids-love-this-one recipe? Preferably not containing sausages, fish fingers or cheese! They don’t need to be stacked with fruit and veg, I’m not trying to be perfect. Just something that is quick to make after school and that they’ll eat!

2 . Egg fried rice with favourite vegetables (my children hate peas so I put baby corn from the tin and cooked, chopped broccoli) and prawns (I buy frozen cooked ones) served with side of cucumber sliced with soy sauce (the soy sauce is quite salty so I always dilute with a bit of water). 3. Chicken or beef fajitas with not too much spice. They love putting on the guacamole, sour cream, grated cheese. Mon Jan 13, 2014 5:30 pm My best time saving tip is freezing mash! It freezes so well and tastes freshly made… For emergency speed, simply fried egg with soldiers for dipping and beans or some veg pasta with béchamel cheese sauce is a favourite. I add ham and mushrooms to the sauce and add broccoli at the end of the pasta cooking time. You get a lovely creamy sauce with veg and protein, all balanced with pasta. Result!

Re: Kid’s favourite recipe Wed Jan 08, 2014 9:08 pm I have one fussy eater and one easy eater and they both love shepherd’s pie. This recipe is from The Cookery Year which my mum gave me when I was about 18! Fry one finely chopped onion and a large carrot slowly for five minutes in a deep frying pan, then add a pack of minced lamb and break up with a wooden spoon until completely browned. Add one big tablespoon of tomato ketchup and a little shake of Lea & Perrins, then cover (only just) with lamb stock (from a cube is fine) and let the lamb bubble gently for half an hour on a low heat. Most of the liquid should have disappeared by now. Transfer to an oven dish and top with mashed potato. Oven bake for a further half hour until the topping is crispy and browned. Serve with peas and ketchup.

C ool Kids C lub/Cafe near Northcote Road Urgently Needed! Just wanted to put that out there. Am I the only one that can’t believe there isn’t a spacious cafemeets-kids-play-area this side of Battersea?? Somewhere that runs classes all day, with room for buggies, where you can get a decent coffee/bite to eat. Been desperately waiting for Eat, Play, Love on Battersea Rise to reopen as that’s the only place I know of that offers the above. Anyone know of anywhere else – or know of anything planned??

Wed Jan 08, 2014 10:50 pm Re: Cool Kids Club/Cafe near Northcote Road Urgently Needed! My fussy children age eight and six years old always eat: Wed Jan 15, 2014 12:48 am Hello! We are not a café but we have a lovely crèche with a play area! And we serve nice coffee and teas with organic cakes. The old School Club is a creative club in Lavender Hill, our crèche is mainly used by the mums attending the classes or using the shared workspace but we are planning to add new activities for under-fives which are open to everyone.... We are also happy to host play dates or mums meet ups – afternoons are great for these. Please contact us for more info. There is also a Spanish playgroup running on Monday afternoons. Focus on Wandsworth Chris Lewis, director at Savills Northcote Road anticipates a bright future for Wandsworth and the surrounding area

A

t Northcote Road, we enjoyed an exceptional 2013, with prices soaring across both Lambeth and Wandsworth boroughs. Interest in the area looks set to continue well into 2014, with plenty in the pipeline for the years ahead and a £1 billion project to transform Wandsworth High Street already underway. The impressive redevelopment of Nine Elms, including, Battersea Power Station, the relocation of the American Embassy and Embassy Gardens has also already had an impact on the area, raising its profile as a place for outstanding investment opportunity.

It’s not only those with established property portfolios looking to make the most of Clapham, Battersea and Wandsworth. Locals have caught on to the patch’s growing popularity and we’ve seen a number of buyers keeping their existing flat in addition to purchasing a new property. A spacious lateral apartment on Salcott Road, currently on the market with us for £875,000, would make an ideal next property, benefitting from an open plan living area and two double bedrooms. With further house price rises predicted, people are holding onto their property in the area, with a number choosing to rent it out on the buoyant lettings market in the interim, before selling at a later date. We’ve also noticed buyers committing to London for longer than before, with families prepared to compromise on garden size or an extra bedroom in exchange for a long term home in the capital. Recent research from Savills in collaboration with the Good Schools Guide found Wandsworth is extremely well represented, with four of the top 50 schools in London all in the local area. Excellent schools combined with the open greenery of the commons certainly makes it an ideal place to bring up children, while keeping in easy commuting distance of the City and centre. Brits are still the top buyers in the area, making up over 80 per cent of the market, although we’ve seen international buyers become more prevalent at the top end of the market. Gowrie Road, a stunning and generously proportioned four bedroom house just off Lavender Hill is a good example of the type of high quality property they are looking for.

(savills.com)

Gowrie Road, SW11 Set over three floors, this attractive four bedroom family home benefits from light and spacious rooms. The tasteful double reception room provides generous entertaining space and with bay windows the room is given a light and airy feel, with original features including two lovely fireplaces. Adjacent is the kitchen breakfast room with modern fitted units designed to allow for a large dining table, which leads out to the south facing garden. On the first floor is the master bedroom with fitted wardrobes, a further double bedroom, bathroom and cloak room are on the same floor. The second floor comprises two double bedrooms and a shower room.

Salcott Road, SW11 Salcott Road is ideally situated running off the Northcote Road with its excellent shops, wine bars and restaurants, close to both Wandswoth and Clapham Commons. Luxury Living St James showcases the final remaining townhouse available at The Quadrant in SW15

T

he Quadrant is the final phase of homes being built by developer St James in the highly sought-after Queen Mary’s Place development in Roehampton, SW15. The five-bedroom townhouses provide state-of-the-art flexible living accommodation and are finished to an exceptional standard. Designed with architectural flair, each home boasts a ‘super room’ on the ground floor – an expansive 20 ft. x 21 ft. family living space incorporating a kitchen, dining and living area. The room is enhanced by a unique glass ‘lantern’ ceiling, as well as bi-fold doors which open out on to the patio, allowing natural light to flood the space. From a practical point of view, a separate utility room with an external door providing direct outside access minimises the wearand-tear from children and pets through the main thoroughfare of the house; and for formal entertaining, there is a separate, generously proportioned sitting room. St James has responded to recent customer feedback by incorporating a study on the first floor, away from the bustle of the family space downstairs. Five spacious bedrooms (three with en-suites) fill the remaining floor space, along with a separate family bathroom. The master suite also boasts its own dedicated

dressing area, as well as a luxurious en-suite. Each property in The Quadrant phase benefits from its own private garden and sun terrace at the rear, as well as convenient off-street parking for two cars. The beauty of this particular part of the Queen Mary’s Place development is the location: the properties are situated in an exclusive enclave tucked away in a quiet corner of the finished estate. Located in the grounds of the prestigious Grade I-listed Roehampton House, the properties not only feature private gardens, but also access to the restored formal rose garden and serene 19th century sunken garden set within the grounds. Residents at Queen Mary’s Place will benefit from an estate manager, on-site CCTV security, a residents’ gym and a private commuter service operating to and from Putney mainline station and East Putney tube station. The development comes under Wandsworth Borough Council, so despite it still being a very affluent postcode, residents pay less than half the council tax of their neighbours in Richmond just over a mile away. SW15 is a very popular location as it is within easy commuting distance of central London (with District Line and Overground trains connecting residents to the heart of the capital in just 20 minutes) as well as being close to the vast green expanses of Richmond Park. Sean Ellis, chairman - 28 -

of St James Group, explains: ‘Roehampton is extremely popular with families, thanks to its proximity to many good schools and outdoor spaces, as well as its excellent transport links into London. It is also relatively affordable compared to nearby Putney, Barnes and Wimbledon.’ Alister Shaw, manager of Hamptons International in Putney, comments: ‘When you think that an average five-bedroom resale property in Putney and Roehampton can reach around £800 per sq. ft., the townhouses at Queen Mary’s Place represent excellent value for money at around £680 per sq. ft. These new family homes are a great opportunity to buy into a high-quality and low-maintenance solution in one of London’s most soughtafter postcodes.’ With only one luxury semi-detached five-bedroom townhouse still available to purchase, time is running out to become a part of this exciting, innovative and exemplary development in an affluent and desirable corner of south west London. n

The last remaining five bedroom house at The Quadrant is priced at £1.685 million For more information, or to register your interest please call the sales and marketing suite on 020 8246 6748 or visit queenmarysplace.co.uk

Planning & Development Keeping you in the know about important street plans affecting south west London

Ram Brewery scheme finds investor

If you look around Wandsworth Town at the moment your eyes are more than likely to rest upon one development project or another, as the area undergoes wide scale regeneration. Locals have seen the beginning of the transformation of Southside Shopping Centre; the Filaments scheme kick off (comprising two adjacent sites just off Wandsworth High Street which will feature 416 new homes as well as commercial and retail space); and both the Battersea Reach and Wandsworth Riverside Quarter residential and commercial developments thrown into action. The latest news to reach Residents’ Journal headquarters reveals that the Ram Brewery site in Wandsworth Town has been purchased by Chinese developer Greenland Group. Although the 7.75 acre site is currently

derelict, it comes with outline planning consent for 661 homes and 9,500 square metres of commercial space for new shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. Greenland’s first acquisition in the UK has a total investment value of circa £600 million, reports Wandsworth Council. Greenland was established in Shanghai in 1992 and has constructed a number of high-profile buildings across China in nearly 65 cities and 24 provinces, including the seventh tallest building in the world: the Nanjing Greenland Financial Center located in Gulou Square, Nanjing City. Zhang Yuliang, chairman and president of Greenland Group, explains the lure of the capital: ‘London is the global financial centre as well as the most open and diversified city that enjoys mature economic development, making it the first option for our investment in Europe.’ Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council, was equally enthusiastic about the partnership: ‘This is more good news for Wandsworth Town and another vote of confidence in the council’s ambitious regeneration plans. The Ram Brewery now has an owner with the experience and deep pockets needed to unlock its enormous potential. ‘The site comes with a very well-designed development plan which will rejuvenate this part of the town centre, open the historic brewing buildings to the public and create hundreds of new homes and jobs. It also delivers on the council’s top priority, which is to redesign the Wandsworth Gyratory and remove through traffic from the high street.’ n

Planning applications Address: Turnchapel Mews Proposal: Demolition of the existing mews houses (use Class B1) and erection of three new mews houses (use Class C3) together with the addition of a basement level and formation of a lightwell to front elevation. Douglas & Gordon only advertise 90% of their property

Amazingly, over 10% of our properties are sold or let without being advertised. Some transactions happen so quickly we do not have time to advertise. In other cases our clients ask us to sell or let their property discretely. We source property specifically to fulfil our buyers’ needs – with the perfect solution sometimes being a property that has not even reached the market. To make sure you are getting the full picture, register with Douglas & Gordon now.
