Dear Resident, What defines a great British summer, for me at least, is the sense of community spirit, as seen in the abundance of summer parties, music festivals and outdoor celebrations. For my first edition of Residents’ Journal, I can think of nothing more pleasant to mark the beginning of the season than the annual barbecue in Battersea Park Children’s Zoo. Kids and adults alike can see the animals off duty, while listening to live music and enjoying plenty of good food and drink, of course. Flick to The Notebook (page 4) and The Calendar (page 8) to find out more. Elsewhere, keeping the al fresco theme in mind, the Journal heads to Thrive in Battersea Park, a charity that is using gardening to help change lives, to interview horticultural therapist Ruth Yeo (page 10). Meanwhile on page 24, Jennifer Mason heads further south to visit the All England Lawn Tennis Club ahead of The Championships to see how this year’s ball boys and girls are preparing for the highlight of the tennis season: Wimbledon. Get the Champagne and strawberries and cream at the ready! Alongside these features, we’ve rounded up the latest news and events, as well as reporting on planning matters. I look forward to meeting you out and about in the area over the coming months. Enjoy the issue!

BATTERSEA
LANDMARK LIVING The sale of homes at Battersea Power Station has exceeded expectations, according to its developers. Since the launch on 1 May, only a handful remain of the 254 flats, designed by London architects WilkinsonEyre, built within and above the famous building. Prices for the properties start at approximately £800,000 for studios, with one-bedroom flats from £1 million. The homes, in three blocks known as Switch House East, Switch House West and Boiler House Square, will be ready for occupation by 2018. There will be plenty to keep residents entertained, including shops, cafés, cinemas and restaurants. (batterseapowerstation.co.uk)
SUMMER IS HERE The annual barbecue in Battersea Park Children’s Zoo is taking place on Tuesday 24 June from 6pm to 9pm. Organised by the Friends of Battersea Park, there will be children’s activities, a tombola, live music, a raffle, a bar and a silent auction to keep everyone entertained. Kids and adults alike can enjoy exclusive access to the zoo to see the monkeys, meerkats, emus and otters off duty. Adult’s tickets cost £16 each until 18 June, £20 thereafter; children’s tickets cost £7 (from the ages of six to 16) and under sixes go for free.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION South Battersea’s latest delicious foodie heaven – Aux Merveilleux de Fred has changed its location from Clapham to Battersea on its website. It was clear that the French-owned business was confused, like many others, by the name of the nearby local railway station, Clapham Junction. The confusion dates back to the station’s opening, when the authorities decided to name it after the more affluent neighbouring district. It’s located on 55 Northcote Road.

CHARITY CELEBRATIONS Katherine Low Settlement has recently celebrated its 90th birthday. Launched in 1924, the charity helps a variety of people in the local area and encourages active citizenship and community spirit. On 17 May, it celebrated with a party to mark the occasion, with the Battersea Society unveiling its blue plaque.

CLAPHAM AND BALHAM
CELEBRATIONS ON THE STREET Ritherdon Road Street Party, which will take place on Sunday 9 June from 11am to 5pm, is promising to be bigger and better than last year’s event. Organised by the Trader’s Association of Ritherdon Road, the pavements will be lined with stalls selling a variety of homemade treats and hand-crafted goods. There will also be live music, performances and traditional fairground games, including hook-a-duck.

ALL THAT JAZZ Football lovers should check out the World Cup special night at Banana Cabaret on 14 June. The comedy club at The Bedford will feature comedians Andrew Lawrence, Mike Wilmot and Chris McCausland. The venue, which has had acts including Michael McIntyre, Lee Evans and Eddie Izzard perform, is known for its laugh-out-loud evenings. Tickets are priced £19.66 as a throwback to when England last won the World Cup and include a free buffet and DJ until 2am.
GOING UNDERGROUND Used at the height of The Blitz in 1940 to 1941, Clapham North’s bomb shelter is now being utilised by Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr, who is backing Zero Carbon Food, which is the vision of Richard Ballard and Steven Dring – an underground project covering two-and-a-half acres of land producing crops underground.

PHOTO FRENZY Residents of Wandsworth have entered in their multitudes into an Instagram photo-sharing competition set by Mayor Angela Graham. Participants captured day-to-day imagery of local life in the contest named What Wandsworth Means to Me. The 575 entries were uploaded on the photo-sharing app using #MyWandsworth. Judged by members of the Putney Photographic Society, alongside Cllr Graham and HSBC branch manager Alistair Ramsay, 40 images were selected and are now on public display at Southside Shopping Centre. Speaking of the competition, Cllr Graham says: ‘The sheer range and diversity of the entries is truly incredible and it’s fascinating to see the different ways people interpreted the challenge.’ Winner Rachel Nixon was awarded an iPad for her photo of a sari shop in Tooting which was commended for its reflection of the area’s culture, diversity and vibrancy. Copies of the selected works for the exhibition are on sale to the public, with all proceeds donated to the Mayor’s choice of charities.

MUSIC TO THE EARS
Forkful of fun
Designing print
The London FolkFest returns this year to Balham’s award-winning public house The Bedford. Now in its fourth year, the festival celebrates emerging and established artists in folk music. It will boast an eclectic line-up of more than 40 artists this year, including The Dunwells, Jon Gomm and Beth Rowley. The event will run for four days, coinciding with FolkFest Insight Seminars; an additional event designed for aspiring musicians, with workshops and seminars offering advice on writing, recording and releasing music.
Following on from the success in a pop-up restaurant in an old tube carriage for The Underground Supper Club in East London’s Walthamstow, The Pickled Fork has headed south to Wandsworth’s very own Barmouth Kitchen. Head chef Alex Motture will be serving a four-course meal. Organic meat from Chadwick’s Butchers in Balham as well mackerel caught from local fishmonger Steve’s ‘day boat’ will be just some of the local ingredients used in the dishes. Dinner will be served alongside complimentary aperitifs and canapés.
This month, the Foss Fine Art gallery will exhibit a selection of prints by contemporary artists such as Dan Baldwin, Brad Faine and Bruce McLean. An added highlight to the show will be an exclusive print produced by Sir Peter Blake, where visitors can rekindle their love of the long-standing British comic The Beano. The iconic piece, which was created in collaboration with The Beano publishers D.C. Thomson & Co, marks the comic’s 75th anniversary. The print merges old and new illustrations of key characters from 1938 to today. Don’t miss the chance to see Dennis the Menace and Gnasher and co!

Film maker Terry Gilliam’s and English National Opera music director Edward Gardener’s interpretation of Benvenuto Cellini will be broadcast live from the London Coliseum to Clapham Picturehouse. The opera, which is based on the life of 16th-century Italian goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini, is a challenging production, not least because of its large-scale cast and unconventional format. The new adaptation, forged by the duo is definitely a must-see.
Friends of Battersea Park invite you to its annual summer barbecue taking place in the Children’s Zoo. The event starts at 6pm and there will be plenty to keep the kids entertained, including a lucky dip and treasure hunt around the zoo. There will be a silent auction with prizes, including a private tour of Battersea Dogs and Cats home, a four-course private dinner for two at Mosimann’s restaurant and a beautiful Vivienne Westwood handbag up for grabs.
Lift festival, returns to Battersea Arts Centre and will feature installations and shows about the impact and legacy of World War I alongside contemporary issues of war and peace. Wandsworth Heritage Service has teamed up with BAC to showcase historical documents that detail the events that took place locally. Residents will get the chance to see memorabilia, including flyers and posters, council minutes and newspaper clippings, which have been drawn from their joint archive.

Nature and
Nurture
‘A
lways do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later,’ author Og Mandino once said. These words certainly ring true for the people of Thrive, a charity that helps those with disabilities or mental health issues transform their lives through gardening. I’m here to meet Ruth Yeo, a horticultural therapist based in Battersea Park, who has been working with the local community for six years. After a warm welcome, we take a seat in the beautifullylandscaped Herb Garden. The sun is peeping through the trees, the birds are tweeting and there’s a sense of stillness; it’s hard to believe the City is only a stone’s throw away. ‘The most rewarding part of my job is seeing how gardening can benefit almost anyone,’ Ruth tells me. ‘I love working with people and helping them to make positive changes in their lives, it’s so fulfilling.’ Founded in 1978, Thrive supports a range of people, including those with learning disabilities, dementia, mental ill health, visual impairment and stroke victims. Either self-funded or referred by medical or care professionals, the sessions take place
Francesca Lee discovers how local charity Thrive is using gardening to change people’s lives
Did you know? The Herb Garden features a women’s and men’s health bed. Packed with vegetables, edible flowers and herbs, it helps clients realise the medicinal benefits of plants, including rapeseed oil, skullcap, ginger and mugwort, to name but a few.

on a weekday over a five-hour period. ‘Each person has their own goals and it’s my task to devise a plan for them to work towards,’ says Ruth. ‘For some, it may be growing a plant from seed, for others it could be gaining work experience in the community or an NVQ in horticulture, enabling them to find paid employment in gardening; at the end of the day it all comes down to what they want to get out of the experience and how Thrive can aid that.’ The benefits of horticultural therapy have been widely documented and have, for some, proved a welcome alternative from more traditional approaches, such as psychotherapy. Ruth explains: ‘If you sit someone down, for example, and say “How are you?”, they may feel intimidated and put on the spot, whereas if they’re focused on gardening – known for its calming qualities – they may relax and open up more.’ The mental health charity Mind recently surveyed GPs in England and Wales and found that half of the doctors felt ecotherapy was a valid and suitable treatment for anxiety and depression. Paul Farmer, chief executive, said: ‘Our research shows

that a holistic treatment like ecotherapy not only delivers health benefits, but also wider social skills and cost savings that medication could not. It improves mental wellbeing, helps people become more physically active and gives them the skills to get back into work or training. It also aids those who are lonely or socially isolated to broaden their networks.’ Ruth agrees: ‘Some clients come to Thrive as they feel lonely or might not have anyone to turn to. It’s so rewarding to see them understanding each other’s needs and forming connections.’ One of Thrive’s success stories is Matt Lewis who suffers from schizophrenia. Dependent on drugs to control various symptoms, including hallucinations, paranoia, delusions and other changes in behaviour, at first he wasn’t sure it was the place for him. However, that soon changed. ‘Thrive has given me structure in my life and I love coming here,’ he says. ‘I was never really that interested in gardening, but it’s great and I’ve learnt so much.’ Matt’s new-found confidence drove him to respond to an advert in the local paper, which was looking for volunteers at a National Trust property. After meeting the staff, he was offered a day’s work every week. ‘When I started at Thrive two years ago, I was in a completely different place. I never imagined that I’d enjoy being outdoors, let alone working towards an NVQ Level 1 in horticulture.’ It is success stories like these that make residents want to volunteer. Judy Tiplay, who became involved with Thrive through her husband John who worked at the charity as a

horticultural therapist, says: ‘After attending an open day, I was impressed by the clients’ enthusiasm and the members of staff who expend so much time and effort helping them. I knew then I’d want to volunteer on a more regular basis when I retired. I simply love the atmosphere of the gardens; peace and tranquillity can be found mingled with busyness and productivity.’ And it’s not just the locals helping out; Thrive has a range of corporate sponsors, including Jo Malone, Forest Garden, Alitex, Berkeley Homes and Boursin that bring in funds, generate publicity and take a keen interest in its projects. ‘Jo Malone has helped to regenerate the Old English Garden – one of Thrive’s three spaces in addition to the Herb Garden and Main Garden – and has created Silk Blossom, a charity candle, whereby a proportion of the proceeds are donated to Thrive. It’s an apt partnership as the perfumer uses many of the flowers and herbs we grow in our gardens in its own products too.’ In addition to the charity working with big businesses, Ruth finds that the gardens provide a creative hub for students from the nearby Royal College of Art who pass their lunch hour there. ‘I love to watch people enjoying what we’ve created here; whether it’s a few moments or they wander around all day, it’s very rewarding. Ultimately for me, though, it’s the clients’ hard work, development and determination that has gone into sowing that seed or potting that plant that really matters.’ n

The Really Helpful Club (reallyhelpfulclub.com) is an infinitely useful resource for smart, sensible women. The members’ forum enables you to reach out beyond your immediate network of friends to share great ideas and your best recommendations. More and more women are benefitting from RHC, a new trusted best friend
T
ime is almost always of the essence and finding solutions to life’s daily needs can be a challenging process. Searching the internet for answers to our questions can inevitably throw up a minefield of conflicting results. The Really Helpful Club (RHC) can always be relied upon to come up with the answers. An online forum for smart, sensible women to share great ideas, helpful tips and trustworthy recommendations, RHC is gaining a foothold in local communities across south-west London and beyond; it has carved its own special niche. RHC enables members to reach beyond their own circle of friends to find tried and tested solutions to all manner of needs from women who share a similar perspective. Sarah Austin, founder and Wimbledon resident, attributes its success to the RHC’s wide-reaching network of contacts. ‘One person simply cannot have the answers to everything,’ she explains. ‘There is nothing worse than wasting time or money. No one has time to make the wrong decision these days, whether they are choosing a reliable caterer for a special event, a trusted dog-walker or finding a family-friendly holiday location – we all feel most comfortable making our choices based on word of mouth recommendations. RHC is all about helping one another and making our lives easier.’ The Residents’ Journal heartily agrees. Sarah adds, ‘my favourite topic was recently posted by a member who found a black Labrador puppy via a recommendation from another RHC member.’ The comment left by a delighted member speaks volumes: ‘We collect our gorgeous new pup on 8 June…excited would be a massive understatement! THANK you to Really Helpful Club – couldn’t/wouldn’t have happened without your site!’ SHARING THE BEST IDEAS WITH OTHER LIKE-MINDED WOMEN
RECONNECTING WOMEN WITH THE WORKPLACE The Really Helpful Club also offers a unique way of connecting women via networking opportunities. Women may have launched a business and want to reach out to a wider community or they might also be looking for a career change or to rediscover the workplace once their children have started school or flown the nest. The RHC facilitates this with a selection of roles placed by employers looking to recruit like-minded local women. Recently, one member posted a role in her south-west London based company and the topic rapidly generated significant interest, after being viewed by more than 500 members. The employer went on to hire not one but two Really Helpful Club members. GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY The Really Helpful Club is also about giving back to the community. The new charities section enables good causes to spread the word about the vital and tireless work they do. By connecting with members at a personal level, Sarah is keen to stress that collectively a real difference can be made. Many women of all ages have already welcomed The Really Helpful Club into their daily lives. Sarah wants to see its reach increase and for those who have not already joined the fold to do so. The Really Helpful Club serves a wonderful purpose. Having created its own approachable, relevant and mutually beneficial destination online, The Really Helpful Club has quickly become an indispensible source of reliable and trusted recommendations, a well-curated platform of information and advice. Don’t miss out; join today! n
(reallyhelpfulclub.com) The power of the network and its effectiveness is evident in the number of testimonials left by its members. One such example speaks for itself: ‘A couple of months ago, I asked if anyone could recommend a private chef who could cook in our home for a special dinner party we were hosting. Thanks to this post, I came across the perfect chef. She was absolutely amazing and provided us with the most delicious three-course meal, plus canapés. She then went on to recommend a waiter who looked after us incredibly well throughout the evening and even cleaned up the kitchen before silently slipping out the door. It was quite literally effortless entertaining – restaurant quality food, but in the comfort of our own home.’ The post, left for all to read, highlights a fact that RHC’s members know only too well: positive, personal recommendations are the best way to spread the word and garner trust and reassurance.

self-sufficient within the space, so there’s a kettle for inspirational cups of tea, an armchair for relaxing in and a bathroom complete with shower to wash away the crime writing grit of the day. How did the move come about? It was part of a much wider building project. My wife and I decided to convert the loft to create extra space, which many people have done around here. Half of it was used for our son’s bedroom, while I took the other half for my study. However, when my wife and I extended our family we needed an extra bedroom, so we turned one of the rooms at the back of the house into my study instead. It was a win-win situation as the kids have a floor of their own, while I have a peaceful working environment. I notice you’ve positioned the desk against the wall as opposed to against the window, why is this? When I was at school I’d often stare out of the window and watch the world go by, so I knew that if my desk looked out to the garden, history would repeat itself. Three pieces of abstract art hang from the walls. Why did you pick these? ‘Real-life’ pictures would, again, make my mind wander. My wife and I have put together a small collection of art over the years and I chose these as I admire the shapes, colours, forms and textures.
Investigating
spaces Interior design has a big impact on our everyday lives. With this in mind, Francesca Lee chats to Battersea-based author Thomas Mogford about his new study and penning his fourth novel, and what he likes most about the area
W
hen I think of a study, I automatically conjure up an old gentlemen’s club-style space; dark yet cosy, leather-bound books crammed into bookshelves and papers scattered across the floor. However, when I arrived at crime writer Thomas Mogford’s Victorian terrace, which he shares with wife Ali and their two children, I realise my perceptions – which Sherlock Holmes would be proud of – are vastly wrong… Your workspace is quite different to what I’d imagined; it’s modern, light and bright. What was the inspiration behind the look and feel of the space? To create somewhere I can shut myself away to write my novels. I get easily distracted so we went for clean lines and neutral décor. I knew I wanted to be relatively
What books do you have on display and why? I don’t have much room as there are only two bookshelves in my study, so I knew I’d have to whittle my collection down; it was tricky to say the least! I have other authors’ crime novels, plus research and travel books to places such as Malta and Morocco where Spike Sanguinetti, the Gibraltarian protagonist of my book, goes on his adventures. I attend crime conventions and writers’ meet-ups and we’re often given a reading list, so some of these are on the shelves too. Personally, I like anything with a fast-moving plot, but it doesn’t have to be crime! I see you have a number of postcards on your desk, why do you have these? The setting is very important to the books so I like to have them lying around to glance at every now and then for inspiration. How do you plan your working week? As my September deadline looms I’m spending Monday to Friday, and sometimes weekends, in the study. I tend to lock myself away from 10am to 3pm then break for lunch. My wife, who also works from home, and I share the childcare. I occasionally still get distracted; whether I can hear my one-year-old having a tantrum or the postman arriving, it’s hard to break old habits! One unexpected bonus is the bathroom fan, which makes a whirring sound but doesn’t distract me as it’s white noise. What are you currently working on? My fourth novel, which is due out next April. Spike will leave Gibraltar and go on his travels to Corfu and Albania, which I’m loving writing about.

In previous interviews you’ve commented that you’ve struggled with the planning process, how has this changed? My wife offers to read the chapter synopses, which can be a very long and painstaking process. She’s very honest and makes brilliant suggestions and then I make amendments to the plot. In the past I used to launch myself into writing but then I’d get writer’s block, whereas now I do the groundwork and it flows a lot more. I used to think if no one else looked at my work it was a form of artistic purity, but on reflection I think I was just fearful of having any holes exposed.

You moved into your house in August 2012, why did you decide on Battersea? My wife and I both had one-bedroom flats in west London and found that we could get a lot more space for our money here. We love the local community, and we’re often found trawling the book collections of charity shops on Battersea Park Road. We also love the fact that Battersea has great transport links to the City and beyond. n

Silver
Service Annabel Harrison meets Wandsworth resident and British designer Phillipa Lepley, as the company celebrates its 25th anniversary, to find out more about the intricate work required to create her exquisite wedding dresses
‘I
don’t want a strapless dress. I’m open-minded about everything else but I really don’t think I want a strapless dress.’ Famous last words; Phillipa Lepley had asked if I had any preconceptions about my wedding dress on our way to her Chelsea store and, after trying on dozens of gorgeous gowns, my favourite three are, in fact, all strapless. I thank her for overturning the only thing I thought I’d insist on and Phillipa smiles, explaining that one of the most important things is to listen carefully to a bride’s wishes but to ensure she doesn’t rule out the perfect dress based on these preconceived ideas about what might suit her. A wedding dress is not, I quickly learn, anything like any other formal long dress, most of which I have disliked over the years, and I’m so glad I listened to Phillipa. After 25 years in the industry, she certainly knows what she’s talking about. ‘Celebrating this anniversary is amazing and I feel lucky to be still doing what I love,’ Phillipa says with enthusiasm that doesn’t seem to waver, even though she must have dressed thousands of brides over the decades. She speaks during our conversation as I imagine she works; neatly, quickly - 19 -

and concisely. ‘I love being able to create more and more beautiful, special, bespoke frocks, helped by my amazing, long-standing team of petites mains. We have come a long way and can enjoy a wonderful space to work in.’ A long way is metaphorical, as distance-wise, Phillipa arrived in Chelsea six years ago from nearby Fulham and her team works in a studio just a few minutes down the road, but further expansion is not on the cards, ‘I like the business the size it is, and focussing on quality, not quantity; I’m very hands-on, so too many things push the boundaries.’ Hands-on is definitely the right expression for Phillipa’s modus operandi; she is involved in every aspect of the business, and high expectations, of herself and those around her, have undoubtedly contributed to her success. I’m shown around her studio and every piece of fabric, every bead and every drawer, not to mention the dresses, are neatly labelled and sunlight streams over the tidy workstations. There is no hint of chaos; the atmosphere is calm and the staff focussed. ‘Precision and experience in all roles sets us apart, and the very high standards of my production managers are an enormous help. Seamstresses, fitters and cutters all need years of experience to attain the levels we require. Pretty much every element is completed in London; some beading is sent away, but most of our embellishments happen in our embellishment department.’ Brides-to-be can expect to spend anything from £2,000 up to a five-figure sum for a bespoke couture creation, which can take thousands of man-hours to complete. Following a consultation, or more than one if required, with the expert vendeuse, Phillipa explains, you select the style, detail and fabric of your dress and place your order. ‘The next appointment allows a technician to take all measurements as well as a visual rendition of your posture; from this information, the pattern cutter will create a paper pattern, from which a calico toile will be made,’ she says. ‘This is a mock-up of your dress and it will be fitted to your body to ascertain the most accurate fit and proportion. The paper pattern will be perfected to incorporate any adjustments made in the toile fitting before the silk fabric is cut. More than one toile fitting is often needed to achieve the precise level of fit required. Depending on the style and fabrics selected, you will require up to six dress fittings, to ensure the highest possible standard of fit and perfection. The final check fitting will be held as close to your - 20 -
wedding date as possible.’ The dedication to detail within the creation and composition of these dresses is astounding and I can vouch for it, having examined them at length and up close. I am getting married next May so I spend a couple of delightful hours in the boutique with Phillipa, trying on wedding dresses for the first time. It’s a joy and I feel like a princess, relaxed, happy and generally delighted during the experience. It may sound hyperbolic but I had been nervous about the first fitting, fearing that I might not find something I loved, but I need not have worried. Baby Olivia turns out to be my favourite style, named after a former client, and I revel in the quality of fabrics Phillipa uses; in addition to organza and lace, which I expected to like, I fall in - 21 -
love with a dotted cotton dress and an elaborately-embroidered and feathered creation, as well as wafting around in a number of veils. Phillipa seems just as happy as I am and I think there’s probably a diamond career anniversary still to come. ‘I really can’t imagine what I’d do with my time without all this. I still get “the tingle moment” when working alongside a bride and hit on exactly the right look. I love that,’ she says. The current anniversary is being commemorated with a beautiful silver dress named the Phillipa. ‘I wanted to create something that showed the world what we’re all about. My team have laboured, lovingly, for hours and hours on this hand-beaded wonder. It is a stunning, feminine dress with a lot of fine detail; a special piece to be remembered.’ This phrase could be attributed to all of Phillipa’s dresses though. She points out that despite the fact that weddings are becoming more and more diverse, and ‘everyone is generally open to looking at different designs, people don’t want anything too period-y and like the classic look... We meet such a broad spectrum of brides from all over the world that there honestly is no real trend apart from the colour ivory!’ Phillipa pauses to consider my next question, as to what’s the biggest mistake a bride can make. ‘Marry the wrong man?!’ I’d been talking about dresses but this is also a good point! Our final words revolve around this wonderful swathe of London. Phillipa lives in Wandsworth; its proximity to the Chelsea store and Fulham studio makes juggling family life and her job easier. ‘I love the greenery and its fabulous village feel; there are lovely local shops and a friendly, lowkey, family feeling. Everything is handy and easy. We live opposite the Common so can hop over to the park at any time.’ Phillipa is also full of praise for the Royal Borough. ‘It’s happening; it has an innovative, young and cosmopolitan feel. I feel very at home and I love the balance. It’s gentle and un-flash. I wouldn’t swap my shop position for anywhere else in London. I call it “my window to the world”. That’s the great thing about having a shop – you just never know who will walk in next.’ If you’re in the market for a one-of-akind wedding dress that will make you feel like a million dollars on that unforgettable day, make sure you don’t pass the shop by; it’s worth paying Phillipa a visit. n

Residents’ Journal
A real
gem The Residents’ Journal meets Gee Woods, the jewellery designer who is breathing life back into the old gems lingering in our jewellery boxes Does jewellery go in and out of fashion? What trends are you noticing at the moment? In a word, yes. I think classic pieces are always going to be popular, but I’ve noticed that more and more people want something individual and personal to them. Rose gold is very much on-trend as people are starting to notice that it’s a flattering colour for pale skin tones. How would you describe the Gee Woods style? My ready-to-wear collection is simple, fun and geometric. I absolutely adore working with yellow gold, using clean-looking settings and lesser-known gemstones. I’m a great believer that the simpler, the better! One of your specialisms involves adapting and modernising vintage jewellery – is this becoming more sought-after? People are realising that there’s no point having an old brooch in the safe that’s never been worn. In some cases the whole piece needs to be re-worked but, where possible, I always try to keep as much of the original to preserve its sentimental value. After the initial client consultation, I draft some rough sketches and go back and forth - 23 -
with them until they are happy. Afterwards, I do some more detailed drawings. These are, again, relayed back to the customer. This is a process that can’t be rushed as it’s essential to make sure every detail is precise before the piece is produced. Where is your jewellery made? All of my jewellery is made by small independent workshops around London. I work with suppliers I know incredibly well and trust implicitly. Each is the best in their field, so when a piece moves from a mounter to a setter, and finally to a polisher, it’s a very rewarding process. Why do you love designing jewellery? I love looking at how a piece is put together, how tactile it is and how it can make you feel. Great jewellery is like good underwear – it instantly lifts your mood and makes you feel fantastic. n Gee Woods specialises in ready-to-wear items through to one-of-a-kind pieces, which range from £95 to £2,500. Bespoke items start at approximately £500.

Jennifer Mason visits the All England Lawn Tennis Club ahead of The Championships, 2014, to see how this year’s ball boys and girls are preparing for the highlight of the tennis season: Wimbledon Image by Chris Raphael/AELTC
A
rriving at the hallowed grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, I am issued with an all-important visitor’s pass and ushered past the innumerable security guards to the indoor practice courts where I meet Sarah Goldson, director of ball boy and girl training. Having young assistants on court at Wimbledon is a tradition that dates back nearly 100 years. The first ball boys from Shaftesbury Homes appeared on court in the 1920s, then from 1946 they were volunteers from local schools. However, it wasn’t until 1977 that ball girls were introduced, and not until 1985 before they were allowed to set foot on Centre Court. Since then, training has become much more inclusive, and each year’s intake is

split roughly 50/50 between boys and girls – although that’s not always the case in the individual teams. Sarah explains: ‘We try to have at least two boys or two girls on each team, but we try not to focus on gender, rather on selecting people who work well together.’ Each year, Sarah and her team receive more than 700 applications from youngsters aged 14 and over from around 30 local schools, including Burntwood School, Saint Cecilia’s and Putney High School. Whittling that number down to 250 (including applicants who’ve been involved in previous years) is no small task; nor is dividing them into final teams. All of the finalists have to complete various physical and mental tests in the run-up to the final selections, but only a chosen few will make

It’s the discipline that gives Wimbledon ball boys and girls their stellar reputation
it on to Centre Court or No.1 Court during The Championships. ‘Discipline, a high level of fitness, knowledge of the game and sharp skills are essential,’ Sarah tells me. ‘All of our ball boys and girls have these attributes, but to be the best, their actions must be imbued with a sense of urgency that can be hard to grasp, especially for those who haven’t done it before.’ Ball boys and girls are a familiar feature for tennis fans, but there’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes than spectators see on court. ‘I think most people don’t realise the level of intensity and attention to detail that goes into the training,’ says Sarah. ‘When you watch the ball boys and girls, they make it appear easy, because they
are so good at what they do,’ she continues, ‘but even the way they present the towels to the players has been meticulously thought through and practised repeatedly.’ Wimbledon ball boys and girls are renowned for being the best in the business. Partly because they represent the traditions and history of this prestigious club, but partly, Sarah thinks it is to do with their demeanour and attitude. ‘It’s the discipline that gives Wimbledon ball boys and girls their stellar reputation,’ she insists. ‘If you look closely at the way they behave during The Championships – whether they’re on court or off – they are always extremely well-behaved. It’s impressive because at the end of the day they are just normal kids, which people tend to forget when they see them poised and alert on court.’ This entrenched discipline is hardwon; training is a long and gruelling process with strict rules. ‘A few of them tell me the training is harder than The Championships!’ Sarah laughs. ‘It is very tough. We can’t replicate the crowds or the atmosphere of a high-profile game, so instead we have to try and replicate the pressure they will be under.’ Robbie, one of this year’s potential team captains, tells me: ‘Physically, the warm-up at the beginning of training is the hardest bit. We do circuits, and then we have to stand completely still for two minutes, to practise for situations on court. You can get quite dizzy and faint.’ I ask him whether he’s worried about this when it comes to the big day. ‘No, I’m most nervous about the ball change. As team captain, I have to know which end the balls need to be and I don’t want to get it wrong.’ Maths, I’m learning, is an essential part

of the training process – as well as having an in-depth understanding of the game. ‘We train them to focus on the score, and what the umpire is saying,’ explains Sarah. ‘But working as part of a team is also hugely important. They have to support each other as a unit, on and off court. That’s why it’s great to have the underlying experience of boys and girls who’ve done it before – the younger ones learn a lot from them, both in skills and attitude.’ Lucy, another of this year’s potentials, reminds me that it’s not all work and no play. ‘Getting out on court is one of the fun
bits,’ she grins, ‘and doing a great feed or roll is a brilliant feeling. I’m nervous about messing up, of course, but I can’t wait for The Championships to start – I think that will be amazing.’ With just weeks to go, I imagine the nerves are beginning to kick in. ‘On the first morning, they will be extremely nervous,’ Sarah predicts. ‘For most of them, that first day of The Championships will be the most time they’ve spent on court thus far. Once they get out there, though, I know they’ll remember their training and have a great time.’
I ask Robbie and Lucy for their predictions for this year’s games. ‘We hope Andy Murray wins,’ they chorus. Of course, they’ll only be able to cheer on the inside if they make it into the final Centre Court team, but I wonder if Mr Murray will still be able to sense the goodwill radiating from his most unobtrusive, but most determined fans – many of whom will be feeling the highs and lows of the Wimbledon experience right alongside him. n

...And relax Find your inner Zen in an urban spa sanctuary, writes Francesca Lee
L
ocated within Hotel Verta on the banks of the River Thames, Spa Verta is subterranean; however, you’d never notice thanks to clever lighting used within the different spaces. After a warm welcome from Tamsin Noyes, the spa manager, I took a seat in the reception area, which was filled with the heady scent of aromatherapy oils and featured a soothing waterfall. I instantly felt calm and a world away from the hustle and bustle of the streets of Battersea. After changing into my robe, I headed to one of the four treatment rooms where my therapist awaited. I was asked to smell a range of Anne Semonin oils, each designed to have a particular effect on the senses. I opted for the Botanical Body Oil, which contains lavender, mandarin, oregano and peanut, known for their calming and relaxing qualities. The therapist then got to work, using her hands and forearms to unravel knots and deep-rooted tension from head to toe. My hunched shoulders required particular attention during the Signature Treatment but, with 55 minutes available to deal with problem areas, there was ample time. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment, but the harder the pressure, the more I felt my aches disappear. Afterwards, my upper body felt looser, and overall, I felt utterly relaxed. I then headed to the Relaxation Room where I poured myself a Spa Verta Signature Bespoke Tea by Cameilla’s Teahouse, which has green and white tea leaves, dried apricots and mullein flowers. Designed to complement the different treatments, the herbal teas are a great touch, along with a range of healthy snacks including cranberries, raisins, walnuts and hazelnuts. After some much-needed R&R I checked out the rest of the spa facilities; a therapy pool with water jets, a sauna, a steam room and a sanarium. With all this on offer, for once I found it difficult to emerge from underground. Next time I need some pure indulgent escapism, I know where to come... n

A new local Lauren Romano hits Ben’s Canteen, newly
opened in Earlsfield, for DIY guacamole and peanut butter brownies
A
ny establishment with do-it-yourself guacamole on the menu – complete with pestle and mortar so you can roll up your sleeves and pound your own avocado and salsa to a pulp – is a winner in my book. For those looking for a laid-back neighbourhood dining spot, Ben’s Canteen will tick a lot of boxes. With cocktails and comfort food in the form of mac and cheese, scotch eggs and ‘pimped up’ pulled pork nachos, Ben’s latest food joint is casual dining at its best. Following the same tried-and-tested formula in operation at the original Battersea branch, Ben’s second canteen is a similar mix of shabby chic: salvaged furniture, minimalist wire lamps dimmed down to a shadowy glow, tap water decanted into old milk bottles. The buzzing bar area leads onto an equally bustling dining room – impressive, considering the place has only been open for a week. A warm welcome greets us in the form of a punchy, fresh ginger-laden SW11 Collins and an equally fiery but thirst-quenching rum punch. Burgers are the house speciality here, but with an impending trip to St Lucia just around the corner, we bypass the beef and buns for a smorgasbord of salads: grilled bream with courgette and heritage carrot noodles and roasted butternut squash and tenderstem broccoli. To start, we polish off chipotle chicken and salsa verde tacos with
the aforementioned guacamole (made by my own fair hand). The spicy smack of chilli left can-canning on my tongue after the round of tacos is soothed by refreshing courgette and carrot ribbons, artfully arranged beneath a soft fillet of bream. Restaurant salads can often be underwhelming, with limp lettuce stealing the show by sheer force of the number of leaves. The butternut squash to broccoli and leaf ratio in mine was nicely balanced and the scattering of pumpkin seeds, the vivid slick of rocket pesto and the al dente-cooked broccoli gave the dish a satisfying crunch. Having made a fair dent on our five-a-day, the good resolve flew out of the window with little more than a glance at the dessert menu. It’s hard to resist the sweet allure of homemade double chocolate and peanut butter brownie with mascarpone ice cream, or orange and almond tart with pistachio ice cream, for that matter. Both were as divine as they sound, and special praise has to go to the rivulets of peanut butter, which added a whole other dimension to the brownie. Washed down with a twist on the classic gin and tonic – an M&G blend of Martin Miller’s gin with fresh lime and sour rhubarb bitters – the desserts were the crowning glory of the evening. If the reputation for reviving brunches earned by the St John’s Hill Ben’s Canteen is anything to go by, the early risers and worse-for-wear residents of Earlsfield alike will be flocking to the premises for the Big Ben all-day breakfast and a bloody Mary, spiced to order. Smashed avocado on toast with poached egg appears on the brunch menu too, although the chefs are in charge of the pestle and mortar this time; DIY is not really quite so fun foggy-headed on a Saturday morning. n

How about getting a cat? Glue traps can be a horrible way for mice to die. The oldfashioned-style traps aren’t pleasant but are much quicker than the glue ones. Humane traps are fine if you have the time. I would avoid using poison, though, as the mice end up dying in cupboards, pipes or under floorboards, for example, and then start to smell. I think the best idea is to block up all the holes as a previous person has suggested and make sure there’s no food for the mice to nibble on. In all seriousness, if you don’t have a cat maybe you could borrow one.
I suggest glue traps. Although they’re not very nice, they’re humane and effective. Don’t let the kids see them though! Mon May 5, 2014 1:25 pm I feel your pain as we had the same problem in our first house and I was a trembling wreck when I discovered them. I recommend that you look for any gaps they might be able to get through such as the pipework, skirting or cupboards. Then rip up metal scourer pads to fill them in. Mice can’t bite through these, you see. Another recommendation: wipe interior shelves with bleach as it’s supposed to repel them. Keep all dry foods in sealed containers. Mon May 5, 2014 1:54 pm Call Jason at Pest-A-Lance, who is very good. He got rid of ours. His number is: 07802 346 323. Mon May 5, 2014 2:19 pm I second Jason. He sorted it out after I’d tried everything last winter.
Where can I buy a ready-made picnic? I’m organising a baby shower afternoon tea for a friend. She’s almost due and we’ve decided to host it at her house as a surprise. Tues May 6, 2014 11:57 am We had mice and called out pest control a few times. In the end what finally got rid of them was filling every space between the skirting boards and floor with wire wool and then covering it

AT THE HELM Elected in 2010, local MP Jane Ellison, updates Henry Hopwood-Phillips on her tenure and what the future holds
I
’m sat at the heart of the hulk that is Portcullis House. Hulk is the right word for Michael Hopkins’ creation; designed to resemble a ship, it’s the real nerve centre – the brain to parliament’s face – in British politics. Opposite, Jane Ellison sips her coffee. As a Member of Parliament for Battersea, Balham and Wandsworth, it is her duty to push the obligatory statistics. ‘Wandsworth schools are around 95 per cent above goodoutstanding,’ she informs me. ‘Everyone in the area is a 10 to 15-minute walk from some sort of park.’ I nod. ‘We are one of the top three youngest boroughs in London,’ she declares. As impressive as these are, I try to nudge Jane on to the local realities beneath the numbers. ‘Well, I can’t wait for the Northcote Road Summer Fete!’ she beams. ‘They close the entire road off.’ Jane studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford, before moving on to the sales floor in retail. I suggest that the job grates in the ear now that PPE’s are seen as gilded routes into the chambers of power; or am I just being snobby? ‘Yes, well maybe a tad but I see the point. I just wanted a “real” job. I really enjoyed my time at John Lewis, working up the ranks.’ Originally from Bradford, I probe Jane on whether her new stomping ground lacks the community spirit she was used to. ‘No, I think it is a common misconception though. We had the inspiring “broom army” after the riots; we boasted some of the biggest street
parties when William and Kate tied the knot and the Queen’s Jubilee took place; and whenever there is a problem – the Old York Road bus route dilemma for instance – the whole neighbourhood gets together to engage in the debate. ‘What I find really exciting about the area is the sense of community and how local people care so much about each other.’ Talking of community, I alert her to the fact a few years ago Northcote Road suffered quite a serious spate of muggings. ‘Yes, I think they caused great alarm,’ she admits. ‘A gang had devised a strategy that targeted mothers on their way to or from school; thankfully, the police caught them all. Today, we are one of the safest inner London boroughs.’ I tease Jane by suggesting Battersea is sometimes mocked as commuter-belt territory. She laughs before replying forcefully, ‘I think it is important to remember that Battersea is becoming a destination in its own right. The tube is coming here in 2018, connecting the isolated to opportunities; the iconic power station has apartments that are already filling up; and commercial redevelopment in the area looks set to bring 20,000 new jobs over the next decade or so. Did I mention that I recently saw Battersea mentioned in an in-flight magazine as one of the places to visit?’ I stand corrected (and chastened). n

Redevelopment plans for Battersea Police Station BPS Cllr Ravi Govindia meets Linden Homes south-east team
It has been reported that Battersea’s former police station on Battersea Bridge Road is to be converted into residential apartments following its closure in September last year. Developers Linden Homes purchased the site in December from the police who have owned it since 1858, and are now working with AWW Inspired Environments to complete the project. The proposed development would see the Edwardian building partially demolished to make way for the construction of a new building on the rear of the site to create a five-storey block of 46 flats, which will include private and affordable accommodation. The new residential space would share a communal amenity space in a south-facing courtyard at ground level, as well as underground parking in the basement, which will be serviced by a car lift. While the structure is currently not a listed building, it is believed to be a candidate for Local Heritage Listing from English Heritage. With this in mind, the developers aim to preserve the front main block of the station which faces Battersea Bridge Road in order to retain the traditional characteristics of the site.

Stocking up Thomas Crabtree, south London sales director at Marsh & Parsons comments on the recent changes to the local property market
S
ince the start of 2014, the demand for property in Balham, Battersea and Clapham has gradually eased as an increasing amount of stock has come onto the market. There are now 15 buyers registered for every available property for sale in the local area, compared to 24 in January. So although demand is still high, there is currently a little more choice for buyers, which is also good news for sellers, who until recently, have had limited options for their onward purchases. This increase has given the market a much-needed boost; most notably for property between £500,000 to £750,000, which remains the most competitive sector of our market. This is largely fuelled by the strong demand from first-time, chain-free buyers, as well as a rising number of buyers migrating south from more central parts of London seeking better value. Indeed, this demand is reflected in the results of our quarterly price index, which reported higher increases in Outer Prime London. Hotspots such as Clapham, Balham and Battersea have benefited from a 14.1 per cent annual price increase, outperforming prime central London, which had just 11.9 per cent capital growth. For now, the London property market as a whole, can still
be described as a ‘sellers’ market with demand continuing to outweigh supply. However, more stable trading conditions appear to be returning and we believe the top of the market has now been reached. Prices will remain high and there is no sign of a ‘bubble bursting’, but sellers should be prepared for this shift in the market. As such, they should be realistic about the price their property can achieve. In the last few weeks we’ve been instructed to sell more property in the £1m to £2m price bracket than ever before. Despite this increasing stock, we are still achieving great prices and this is currently creating a very healthy property market at the higher end. n

Family matters Savills south west explains why spring has marked the return of family tenants
S
avills south west London lettings team has noticed a remarkable pick-up in the family housing market since the start of May, with the Wandsworth office letting three homes in 10 days. Similarly, the Fulham office agreed two houses in a day over the same period. Savvy families have already begun looking for houses as far away as August, in a bid to beat the market and be the first to know about upcoming availability. Meanwhile, expecting couples are putting the feelers out in Putney, with the catchment area for good local state schools a top priority.
Sophie Curtis, head of Savills Fulham lettings comments: ‘As well as a resurgence in the appetite for family rentals, we’ve noticed that a number of tenants who are coming to the end of their contracts are now looking to buy, showing there is still confidence in the London property market. Our Wimbledon and Barnes offices have also reported this trend, with tenants in a position to buy choosing to do so now in anticipation of further price rises.’ n

Walk this way A new collection of homes is launching at Grainger plc’s Macaulay Walk development. Clapham Old Town’s latest premium residential address includes heritage conversion apartments and houses that retain many of the site’s original features. Prices start from £600,000 for a one bedroom apartment and £1m for a house for sale through Savills. Located next to Clapham Common on the former site of the Ross Optical Works, which dates back to 1891, the one and two bedroom apartments and houses have been designed by awardwinning Assael Architecture and prime residential interior specialists MMM Architects. Together they have designed the homes to represent the best in luxurious and contemporary living while preserving the rich history of the site. The open-plan apartments, some of which are duplexes, have been built with high-quality materials and feature exposed brickwork, high-ceilings and large windows, providing an abundance of natural light. The houses have a distinctive ‘upside down’ layout, with the bedroom and bathroom spaces on the ground floor, the kitchen/living/dining area on the first floor and a loft-style space on the second floor, which could operate as an additional bedroom, study or living space. The apartments and houses have large oak doors with bespoke bronze handles that reflect the site’s industrial heritage, marble countertops in the bathrooms, premium lighting and wood flooring throughout. Blending the old with the new, existing features such as iron joists and wooden beams have been renovated to remain sympathetic to the building’s history.

Look to the future Touchscreens in the window, virtual walk-through property tours online; John Thorogood on Northcote Road is equipped with the latest technology in its property hunting arsenal. Director Austin Thorogood explains how the estate agency is staying ahead of the game
A
ustin Thorogood doesn’t like looking into his crystal ball. When it comes to what the future of the property market holds, he prefers to steer clear of predictions, just as he would advise clients to be wary of trying to speculate what the market has in store for 2015 and beyond. ‘We always advise people to focus on their own circumstances and what they want, as much as what the market is doing,’ he explains. Instead, John Thorogood is in the business for the long haul and recruits its employees to reflect this longevity. The latest member of the team boasts an impressive 25 years’ experience of the local property market. Founded in 1991, John Thorogood might be the longest serving estate agency on Northcote Road, but that doesn’t mean it is stuck in the past. ‘We pride ourselves on being forward-thinking,’ director Austin Thorogood assures. In recent months, this look to the future approach has involved bringing the office to the vanguard of the latest technology, and launching a new mobile responsive website. Rather than opting for an app or a reduced content mobile site, the new website now adapts to any browser; be it a smartphone, tablet or PC, so that all content is fully accessible on the go. It has been a lengthy undertaking, but one that complements the other technological innovation already visible at the office. During a recent refurbishment, the window of the premises was fitted with an interactive touchscreen, which means that customers can scroll through properties as they pass by during or outside office hours, without having to step foot inside. There is a second touchscreen in
the office too. This dynamic way of keeping up to date with the latest homes on the market and viewing them with a swipe of the screen is already proving a success. Meanwhile, HD interactive walkthrough films for all properties on the books are available to view online too, enabling house hunters to experience an address in all its three-dimensional glory before committing to a viewing, again saving time and hassle. ‘Compliments on the new-look office have been overwhelming and one or two agents are now following suit,’ Austin says. Investment in the latest technology and a new-look office does not mean, however, that the company’s long-established local roots and old-fashioned values have fallen by the wayside. John Thorogood maintains its family-run ethos. Austin’s wife Cara has been inspirational and instrumental in

the full company rebrand, the design of the office and the new features and also looks after the marketing and customer service. Its staff have more than 75 years’ combined agency experience. They know the local area inside out and all of them live locally too. Involvement in the community is similarly high on the agenda, as Austin confirms that John Thorogood will be the premium sponsor of the Northcote Road Summer Fete next month, contributing some fun family activities to the day. His crystal ball might be redundant, but Austin is clear on the future direction of John Thorogood: ‘We will continue to invest in the best people and the latest technology so that we can offer an unrivalled service for our clients.’ n

Donation time Jonathan Dyson, senior manager at Hamptons International, thinks manpower not money can make a really difference to the local community
T
he definition of doing a good deed for the day is open to interpretation. For some, it means a quick scrabble in a jacket pocket for a few coppers to clink into a collection tin. But for others, Jonathan Dyson of Hamptons International included, donating loose change is a bit of a cop-out, especially when it comes to lending a helping hand locally. ‘I’ve lived around here for 20 years,’ he begins. ‘When I opened this office on Northcote Road I was very keen to make a difference to my manor, so to speak. I have always maintained that to be a really good estate agent you need to work where you live and, if you work where you live, you get involved with what is happening on your doorstep,’ he concludes. Nobody could accuse Jonathan of not practising what he preaches. Indeed, he has rallied the troops at his office to help out at all kinds of local events, organising bring-and-buy sales too. To be a really good estate agent especially those in ‘Children grow at a prodigious you need to work where you live and, rate, so what do you do with your connection to nearby schools. There might buggy once they no longer need if you work where you live, you get be many reasons why it? You go to one of the NCT sales, involved with what is happening on buyers continue to flock which are held three times a year, to Northcote Road and and you sell it,’ he says. And who your doorstep its surrounding tributary will be on hand to help you set up streets, but one of the your trestle tables and bundle your prime attractions for families looking to move to the area, Jonathan outgrown baby grows from the boot? You guessed it: the Hamptons believes, is the two Oftsed outstanding primary schools, Belleville team will be at Broomwood Hall from 7am to help flustered School (where his daughter is a pupil) and Honeywell School. parents set up their stalls. ‘The Hamptons team runs the bar at the Belleville School But why are the team doing this?’ Jonathan ponders the Summer Fête and we have an on-going partnership with question. ‘Hamptons is trying to promote longevity, to give Honeywell,’ he says. This long-term commitment has involved something back over a longer period of time so that we can invest printing newsletters, helping serve drinks at charity auctions and in everyone’s future. We are all local and we want to take the time generally getting involved. ‘We contributed just shy of five figures to to make a difference. I was lucky enough to get my daughter into Honeywell last year in terms of printing and other sponsorship costs, one of the most over-subscribed local schools so I feel it is my but we must have tripled our involvement in terms of manpower.’ duty to give something back.’ Fête-goers and bring-and-buy salers, While anyone can contribute some money and stick a banner Jonathan and his team will see you bright and early. n up, not many would relish the prospect of being at school from 6am on a Saturday morning to help set up a fête. ‘There will be 98 Northcote Road, SW11 6QW, 020 7411 9179 (hamptons.co.uk) four of us there for the duration of the day and we’ll actually be part of what is going on, helping and meeting people. It’s as much, if not more, about us giving our time as giving our money,’ Key dates for the diary Jonathan stresses. It’s not just helping out at schools that the team are investing Belleville School Summer Fair: Saturday 21 June precious hours in; Jonathan is also an advocate of the National Honeywell Summer Fair: Saturday 5 July Childbirth Trust. ‘When you are having a baby and you haven’t got a clue what you are doing, you can enrol for a course with the NCT nearly new sale: Saturday 21 June and Saturday 27 September NCT and spend a weekend with other like-minded couples. It is Time: 9.30am to 12pm the best investment you will ever make,’ he assures, adding that Location: Broomwood Methodist Church, 155a Broomwood Road three of the couples in his NCT group have become close family Entry: £1.50 (priority entry for the first 100 card-carrying NCT friends. The fact that the classes are organised locally means that members), free entry after 11am the group provides a great support network to expectant couples, (nct.org.uk/branches/clapham/about-clapham-nct/nearly-new-sales) both before and after the arrival of their children. BEST-LAID PLANS Knight Frank Wandsworth introduces an exciting property with huge potential for expansion
B
askerville Road is considered one of the most sought after addresses in Wandsworth. The street, which forms part of one of the most affluent areas known as the “Toast Rack”, enjoys exceptional views across one of London’s most beautiful green spaces, while still being within walking distance of transport links to the City and local amenities. Set within this exclusive area is one of Knight Frank’s most exciting properties currently on the market; perfect for the discerning investor or a family looking to create a stylish abode. The large family home already boasts eight bedrooms and 3,132 sqft of living space; but planning permission has been applied for to complete a full development of the basement, front to rear, and to add a two-storey rear extension. The application is expected to be approved, so if successful the new owners would be able to begin construction on the site from June this year. The property retains many of its original features, including a stunning, stained-glass front door leading to a deep, wide entrance hall with the original tessellated tile flooring and intricate ceiling plasterwork. The plans for the new extension take into account and complement the period features of the property, working in harmony with both the location and layout of the current house. The planned basement extension would provide space for a selfcontained apartment as well as a media room.
The house, which is set within a 90ft mature private garden – one of the largest on the road – is overlooked by a stylish brickpaved terrace perfect for entertaining. A secure, secret gate offers direct access to Wandsworth Common, making it easy to explore this beautiful part of London. Despite being an exciting proposition as it stands, the property boasts remarkable potential for expansion and renovation for buyers looking to put their mark on it. Full details of the plans can be obtained from the Knight Frank office in Wandsworth. n
