Dear Resident, As we stride into a brand new year with all the best intentions, the Residents’ Journal team has thrown itself into tasting and experiencing as much as we possibly can. If you’ll pardon the reference to resolutions (no one really keeps them anyway), our goal for the New Year is to meet as many interesting local residents, businesses and organisations as possible. Please do help us with our task, emailing your thoughts, feature ideas, news and general musings to bbcw@residentsjournal.co.uk. The Journal has the pleasure of revealing the winners of our charitable donations competition – turn to page 7 to find out which five charities readers chose to receive £500. This month, we have an exclusive interview with Chris Medland, director of the RIBA chartered architectural practice Oneworld design, which has been tasked with the creation of the new Battersea to Chelsea Harbour footbridge (p. 8). Chris discusses the evolution of the bridge’s design and when we can expect to be utilising this most welcome piece of construction. Jo O’Donoghue speaks to the enterprising local residents behind Northcote Books Limited, an independent community bookshop. The unique concept should prove attractive to the boroughs bookworms – turn to page 14 to read more.

Single malt ambition Cheers to Battersea-based whisky distillers The London Distillery Company, who have been granted London’s first licence to produce single malt whisky in more than a century, and on 12 December, proudly announced that its first glug of the British spirit began to flow from the still. The whisky will be distilled in a 650 litre copper pot still, ‘Matilda’, named after co-founder and CEO Darren Rook’s Scottish Grandmother. Once the British spirit, that will be produced during the second distillation, has been matured in casks for a minimum of three years and a day, it will legally become single malt whisky. Residents’ Journal assistant editor Lauren Romano visited the company in August, when CEO Darren Rook was beginning this lengthy process and has long been looking forward to this moment. We’ll be quaffing Battersea-brewed single malt in a few years’ time!

Nine Elms helps young people into work
Ramsay’s coming to Battersea
An innovative new scheme launched and managed by Wandsworth Council aims to inspire the borough’s school and college students to investigate future employment opportunities in the construction and development industries. Partnering with the regeneration of Nine Elms, the Education Links programme offers work experience and employability training to young people.

The Gordon Ramsay Group has confirmed plans to launch a new restaurant within the Nine Elms regeneration zone. London House, situated in Battersea Square on the site of the old Bennett Brasserie and Oyster Bar, will feature modern European cuisine and will be Ramsay’s 26th restaurant worldwide. The dining destination is pegged to open in February headed up by chef Anna Kelly.
Wandsworth schools who would like to get involved with the programme should contact Ellie Boorer: eboorer@wandsworth. gov.uk or Noel Tierney: ntierney1@ wandsworth.gov. uk at Wandsworth Council’s Children’s Services Department -4-
The Battersea Power Station development enters its next phase as National Grid starts work to dismantle the disused gasholder next to the station. The site was decommissioned in 2012 and improvements to the gas network mean that the holders are no longer required. Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council, says of the demolition: ‘For decades this facility was part of a vital gas network but the holders are no longer needed and the land can be released to meet the needs of today’s Londoners.’ (batterseagasholders.com)

Lambeth welcomes plans for UK’s first cooperative parks Greater power in relation to the borough’s green spaces will be handed over to local residents as Lambeth Council prepares to become the first council in the country to introduce cooperative parks. In offering locals greater involvement in decisions concerning their local parks, the council hopes that The Cooperative Parks Programme will enable communities and park groups to work alongside the council to improve local green spaces, make decisions about where money is spent and influence how they are designed. On 9 December, Lambeth Council’s cabinet will discuss a report which recommends this scheme for green spaces including: Streatham Common, Larkhall Park, Myatts Field Park, Stockport Playing Fields, Ruskin Park, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, Brockwell Park, Hatfields Green.

Creatures of Habit To christen their new kitchen and bathroom studio and tile library properly, Peter Burke and Stan Olendzki of Linear Tiles threw a smashing party at the end of November for the local community. The duo ensured that the drinks and nibbles flowed as guests wandered around the Creatures of Habit exhibition with art by Benjamin McKay and a live performance by singer Dom Coyote. Linear Tiles shared some of its pictures taken on the night with the Journal team; it would appear that the best parties happen in the kitchen.

A pod of dolphins swimming down the River Thames is not a sight you are likely to see every day; so thought the Marine Policing Unit (an arm of the Metropolitan Police) until last month. The team on the Marine 2 boat caught sight of the five large sea mammals between Tower Bridge and Battersea. It is not clear why the dolphins were in the area, but it has been suggested that they might have been seeking shelter from the storm ravaging the North Sea; @MPSonthewater humorously tweeted: ‘We are not sure if it is here by accident or whether it swam here on porpoise.’
Calling all young Masterchefs Wandsworth Council has launched its Young Chef of the year competition, supported by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Angela Graham, who has pledged to spend her mayoral year creating opportunities for young people. Teaming up with Nick Vadis, UK executive chef of the major catering contractor Compass, he has agreed to provide chefs to mentor the finalists from seven local schools. The final cook-off will be held at Burntwood school in March.

An independent commission of local government finance and business experts from across London has been launched by Labour councillors in Wandsworth, seeking to unearth new ways to keep council tax down in the borough without cutting funds for frontline services. Chaired by longterm Wandsworth resident Michael Ward, former chief executive of the London Development Agency, the commission’s report will be independent of the Wandsworth Labour Group and will be produced in the Spring.

The council’s education chiefs have named educational trust Floreat as its choice of academy provider to run a new Earlsfield primary school (not to be confused with Earlsfield Primary School), which is due to be built on the side of the Atheldene Centre, fronting Garratt Lane in 2014. Floreat proposes to concentrate on the ‘four ‘Cs’: core skills (literacy and numeracy), cultural knowledge, curiosity and character,’ and says it will promote these attributes in partnership with the charity Adventure Learning Schools, through links with Wellington College and outdoor activities. The choice of provider must now be endorsed by the Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove, who will make the final decision and, if approved, the school will open in September 2015 and will admit 60 children a year, eventually providing places for up to 420 pupils.

Dear Reader, You may remember in our November issue we explained that a small mistake at our suppliers resulted in the incorrect wording being foiled onto the July front cover of the Residents’ Journal. The writing on the front of the cover, ‘Written for the residents of’ is normally followed by the correct wording: ‘Battersea, Balham, Clapham and Wandsworth’ in silver foil. However, in July, the silver foil read: ‘Written for residents by residents.’ The normal course of action would have been to reprint the covers quickly. Instead, our publisher felt compelled to consider alternative options that would spare the environment the additional burden of wasted covers. Our mission has been, and will always be, to produce the highest quality magazines that add to our communities, rather than to our recycling bins. In conjunction with our supplier, we decided instead to donate the money that would have been spent on reprinting covers to local charities and asked you, our readers, to suggest some of your favourites. We had five lots of £500 to give away, and asked you to vote for the local charity that you thought deserved a cheque. We were inundated with votes, and when the competition closed at 6pm on 10 December, we were left with five deserving charities that received the most support. These five (right) will receive a cheque each for £500 as this magazine goes to print – but we urge you to remember all of the charities we have previously mentioned when considering any personal donations.

The Diamond Jubilee Footbridge design
Bridging
two worlds Linking two communities the Diamond Jubilee Footbridge – the first new structure to be built astride the River Thames in a decade – has finally been approved

H
er Majesty the Queen was resplendent, a vision in white, as she boarded the Spirit of Chartwell, a ceremonial barge specially commissioned for her 2012 Diamond Jubilee celebration. All eyes rested on the Royal Family as they smiled and waved, and surely little attention was paid to the actual location of their embarkation point. A few eyes, however, were fixed on this humble spot near Albert Bridge, poised with plans unfurling for London’s newest structural development. In late November, the announcement that the Diamond Jubilee Footbridge – which will join Fulham and Battersea – had at long last been approved must have been met with a sigh of relief across the borough for the many people and companies involved with the project. This bridge has been a long time coming. ‘One-world design architects discussed the idea of a bridge in this location with Hotel Rafayel owner Iqbal Latif as far back as 2011,’ Chris Medland, director of the architecture practice charged with the design of the structure, tells me. As early as 1924, two years before the Queen’s birth, Viscount Curzon MP acknowledged in the House of Commons that a bridge for pedestrian access between Wandsworth Bridge and Battersea Bridge was needed. Chris continues, adding: ‘Together, we decided the idea was a good one, so One-world design set about creating a plan. In 2003, the local authorities instigated a feasibility study to select the best position for a new crossing and, in 2010, in a re-election promotional video, former Battersea MP Martin Linton called for a footbridge to be built alongside Battersea Railway Bridge.’ Current Battersea MP Jane Ellison and Richard Tracey of the London Assembly have also achieved widespread coverage and support for the bridge since their election. Setting the ball in motion, the backing of Palace Investments and Hotel Rafayel enabled a full design team to be engaged and consultation to be undertaken. The highly skilled, creative minds drawn together to formulate plans for this pedestrian and cycle link include: structural engineers Expedition Engineering;

marine engineering company Beckett Rankine; environmental hydraulic engineers HR Wallingford; environmental consultants RPS; ecologists Thomson Ecology; archaeologists Oxford Archaeology; spatial accessibility analysts Space Syntax; and lighting designers Paul Nulty. They will work alongside One-word design as lead consultants and architects; Red7Marine, which will manage construction sequencing and logistical advice; and Gleeds, which will handle outline cost preparation. One-world design, a RIBA chartered architectural practice with sustainable design at its core, has worked voluntarily to ensure that the project achieved planning permission. The project now seeks private corporate sponsorship in exchange for ‘naming rights’ and for the bridge to be gifted to London at no cost to the taxpayer or local authorities. And what a wonderful gift for London it will be. Hammersmith and Fulham Council’s Design Review Panel, made up of representatives from local residents’ associations and amenity groups, thought it was a ‘terrific proposal for this part of town.’ The 170-metre-long bridge, costing approximately £22 million, will link Lombard Road, Battersea with Chelsea Harbour. Chris hopes it will allow commuters greater access to Imperial Wharf’s station in Fulham, alleviating the pressure on Clapham Junction station. The benefits will not just be felt by travel-weary commuters, however. Wandsworth Council commissioned a business case for the bridge that highlights the benefit/ cost ratio and it argues that with a 2.0:1 result, the economy, health and the environment will be greatly improved by the construction of the bridge. This assessment also takes into account the financial benefit weighed against the cost of building and maintaining the bridge. The benefit/cost ratio here is above the Transport for London passmark of 1.5:1, and meets the threshold of 2.0:1 that the Department for Transport considers to represent high value for money. ‘The first proposal developed was for a five-arch bridge, which would closely follow the arches of the existing railway bridge,’ Chris tells the Journal. ‘As further investigations were carried out and consultation responses were received, the constraints and disadvantages of this scheme became apparent. Chief among the disadvantages was the realisation that building four piers in the river would disturb the ecology of the tidal mud flats and disrupt the navigation of the houseboats in Albion Quay in particular.’ Other issues that affected the bridge’s design were raised by English Heritage and the Environment Agency (EA) and related to the restricted view of the existing listed railway bridge and the strategy for rainwater collection. The EA noted that rainwater collected on a solid deck may need to be treated. By reverting to a lightweight permeable deck the matter was rectified, also making the bridge lighter. The plan was developed and a three-arch scheme which resolved the environmental issues emerged as a frontrunner. ‘The design features two large structured steel arches, spanning the equivalent of two spans of the existing Battersea Railway Bridge (which the footbridge will run alongside),’ says Chris. In total, nine different

The 170-metre-long bridge, costing approximately £22 million, will link Lombard Road, Battersea with Chelsea Harbour concept options that worked within the tight physical parameters were explored, involving forked paths around a tubular steel arch and suspended decks. The final design will be painted white, to ensure a sleek and modern aesthetic. Councillor Nicholas Botterill, leader of Hammersmith and Fulham Council, said of the project: ‘The new bridge has the potential to give the south of our borough a real boost by improving the local economy, bringing jobs to the area and making transport links better and faster. We look forward to seeing this exciting idea becoming reality and with 1.2 million trips expected across the new bridge per year, this will be beneficial for local residents as well as commuters and visitors who come through the borough.’ Chris admits that the programme is reliant on successful sponsorship at the moment, but if a suitable candidate is found before Easter, work could begin as early as autumn 2014, with a completion date of spring/ summer 2015. ‘The construction of the two river piers will be evident first,’ he explains. ‘And these will need to be built during the autumn/winter to avoid the fish spawning season, whilst the steel super structure will be constructed off-site and brought up the river by barge.’ As plans move forward in Battersea, commotion further up river is abound as renowned designer Thomas Heatherwick and actress and campaigner Joanna Lumley lobby for a new pedestrian ‘Garden Bridge’ linking Temple Station with the Southbank. The structure would both widen and narrow across its length and be covered with leafy flora. Heatherwick Studio is currently working closely with Transport for London and world-renowned engineering consultant Arup to develop the scheme, with the Government already pledging £30 million to support its construction. n

This January, Tomten is coming to Clapham; Old Saw, the unique theatre company, will bring to life Viktor Rydberg’s Swedish poem. A mythical creature of Scandanavian folklore, the tomte is believed to take care of a farmer’s home and children, protecting them from harm, particularly at night when the world is asleep. Performed by three energetic puppeteers, Old Saw presents the story with such vivid imagination that it is sure to prove extremely popular with audiences.
In a new interactive installation entitled 97 Years, contemporary artist Jo Hellier remembers a series of conversations that took place between herself and her grandfather. Gradually throughout the show, Jo recruits audience members to help her hold things together while picking through her memories – some fleeting and some irrevocably lost. This is a poignant investigation of mental health that invites audiences to work with the performer to untangle a muddled mind.
Evelyn De Morgan began her artistic career at the Slade School of Art (reportedly the first school in Britain to offer female students the opportunity to attend lifedrawing classes), where she developed her interest in drawing the human body. This new exhibition, featuring material from the De Morgan Centre’s archive of drawings, will showcase De Morgan’s drawings and sketches, and explore her time at the Slade as well as the experiences of female artists in the late 19th Century.

Heart of the
Community Battersea rejoices as residents move closer to the opening of a new community-owned bookshop in Northcote Road

What I’m particularly looking forward to is walking into the bookshop and buying a terrific book that I wouldn’t even have known about if it weren’t for one of the staff recommending it to me Carol Rahn
C
ommunity-based shops and co-operatives are usually thought of as rural establishments rather than city businesses. According to the Plunkett Foundation (which supports social enterprises), in 1993 there were just 23 communityowned shops, but 20 years on there are more than 300 nationwide, with a further 30 opened in 2013 alone. Yet only one of these was located in the capital (The People’s Supermarket in Bloomsbury, if you’re interested) – until now… With a planned opening in the spring, the residents of Wandsworth and Battersea are celebrating another step towards their dream of an independent, shared community bookshop. Last month, the Northcote Books Limited project was officially named as a Society for the Benefit of the Community, in one of London’s most exciting new developments for 2014. ‘This means that Northcote Books Limited is a not-for-profit social enterprise; a form of co-operative
which will be owned by the community,’ explains Viv Taylor Gee, chair of the steering committee, a former documentary maker and communications adviser to the World Health Organization. ‘There is a full set of rules for this type of organisation to ensure that it is properly managed, that any surplus is ploughed back into the venture and the community, and that the people who buy shares have a voice in what we do: they will be co-owners.’ So what exactly has the committee planned? ‘My vision for the shop is that it will be a warm and welcoming place not only to browse and to find the best books (the ones you have heard about or read about, with 24-hour order, free delivery and a book-tracking service) but also to come together with others to meet authors, novelists, scientists, poets, thinkers, all those who write books, as well as a place to host creative workshops of all kinds,’ says Viv. The shop will be a particularly exciting place for

parents, children and schools to visit; a real cultural heart for the area.’ Even more uniquely, the bookshop will be located within Northcote Library: ‘The idea to locate to the library came from Councillor Peter Dawson who contacted GLL (Greenwich Leisure Ltd) which runs the libraries in Wandsworth and they saw the potential,’ reveals Viv. ‘As you know, high streets all over the country are having to find new ways to be vibrant and to survive: our local library has been on the verge of closure before now. ‘Bookshops are particularly vulnerable because many books are bought online. In our area, small shops close because they struggle with high business rates and rents: we are fortunate to be able to use part of the library; it will help us to become viable. ‘Although putting a shop in a library is a new idea, it can work because people who want to read use both! We will not be in competition: we have a shared interest.’ As local resident and writer Carol Rahn explains, ‘We will be the first in the UK, as far as I know, to put a bookshop in a library, but I think it’s a truly inspired innovation. ‘In today’s world, bookshops that are successful and libraries that stay open are transforming themselves into places where people want to linger. They draw people through the door with a compelling programme of events.’ Indeed, Northcote Books is looking forward to playing host to a varied and full programme of talks, interviews, seminars and workshops on subjects from art, literature and science, to finance, cookery and even fashion. ‘The bookshop and programme [of events] will be run by a professional manager and staff, but will have back-up from local people, for both ideas and contacts,’ says Viv. ‘This area is blessed with a lot of talented and
How it began The idea for Northcote Books was born in March 2013. When faced by the imminent closure of Bolingbroke Bookshop, 70 people gathered at a public meeting on a wet Monday evening. They vowed to start a community bookshop and have grown to encompass a board of nine and a group of more than 400 supporters. The bookshop will raise its start-up capital by selling community shares, with shareholder membership open to individuals, local businesses, schools and other organisations.
supportive professionals.’ Ivor Rawlinson, former diplomat and ex-British Ambassador (who is responsible for defining the shop’s client base and advising on the events programme alongside networking and fundraising) believes that the interactive element of Northcote Books is what will make it successful. ‘There will be an exciting programme of events for all ages,’ he says, ‘[…] creative writing, book clubs, multi-media, presentations, signings, story-telling for children and more.’ And from there, the community-based idea of the bookshop ‘hub’ will blossom. ‘The French community will enjoy our French corner stocked by a French bookshop in South Kensington,’ he gives as an example. ‘Northcote Books will provide a literary, cultural focus which doesn’t currently exist between the commons.’ As part of its plans for Northcote Books, the committee examined the results of new market research undertaken by campaigners; it clearly illustrated that local residents were quick to highlight the need for ‘a welcoming atmosphere, good coffee and space to browse,’ alongside a varied selection of books. ‘I want to see a quality bookshop where everyone will get the advice they want as well as brilliant service,’ says Ivor, echoing the voice of the research respondents. ‘We need to be able to help the busy mother who needs birthday books for two children – but her parking ticket is running out; to recommend the best of the thousands of novels available; where we can supply any book for our discerning clients within 24 hours. It will be a book space where one can browse and have excellent coffee and cake at the same time.’ In fact, the more the plan comes together – the more absurd it seems that it’s not been done before. A library – and a bookshop – with a full events programme, kids’ activities and good coffee; it seems a very natural evolution for both the bookshop and library service. ‘We know people do not want small, independent bookshops to die out, especially for their children’s sake, and that they really would welcome our idea of a creative hub,’ echoes Viv, in agreement. ‘We seem to have touched a nerve […] support has come from all around the area, social media and beyond.’ Certainly, the concept of Northcote Books as a legacy has also appealed to residents – something that their children and young people can get involved with now and continue supporting into adulthood – a service that will change with them, meeting their needs regardless of age, gender, education, taste, interest and reading ability. ‘This is Nappy Valley,’ Carol reminds me. ‘With so many children and young people here, promoting literature to the next generation matters a lot. As many parents realise, a love of reading boosts their children’s chances of success at school and beyond. We will be a trusted resource for parents, helping to foster reading for pleasure. ‘We’re also actively engaging with schools in the area. We’re learning that many young people are keen to take part in a dialogue about books – to see their recommendations and tastes taken into account.’ n

THE EXPERT
1. Keep it simple
Ricky Leaver originally worked in publishing before founding the Londonstills picture library in 2001, selling his images of contemporary London for commercial and editorial use. In 2007 he expanded the site to form Londonstills Photo Art, making a small selection of his photography available as signed, limitededition prints. His photography is a mix of timeless black and white, and bright bold abstracts with a particular emphasis on accentuating clear shapes and silhouettes. Ricky lives in Putney and is currently chairman of Putney Artists. All his images are taken with a Canon EOS 5D (Mark I).
Simple, clear pictures of London are often the strongest images. Avoid clutter, it only distracts. Less is definitely more.
2. Explore and experiment London is such a diverse place that you can take any picture you can think of. Get out there, explore this great city and find a different angle. Don’t be afraid to experiment – you’ll often be amazed at the results.

Colours that are the opposite side of the spectrum naturally catch the eye; together they can make a terrific picture. So combine reds and greens, blues and oranges, yellows and purples.
London is stuffed full with a never-ending combination of amazing shapes, silhouettes, shadows and textures. Find these, and you are halfway to capturing a powerful image. n

Interior designer Camilla Hampton talks to Maisy Molloy about her signature style, launching her new studio and why she was destined to follow this path

F
or Camilla Hampton, it seems that not even the tide of time nor a successful career in the City could stand between her and a lifelong passion for interior design. As she puts it, ‘If you’ve got that in you, you’ve really got to go and pursue it. You can only sell your soul for so long.’
Life experience Camilla Hampton Interiors may appear worlds away from the designer’s science degree and years spent as a City headhunter, but as she explains, she’s been doing this since she was five years old, literally. ‘I would lie awake at night thinking I wanted my bed somewhere else so I’d be moving the furniture around, in tears because obviously I couldn’t move anything. My parents would have to come up and help me rearrange my bedroom so I could then go to sleep,’ she laughs. Clearly then, the success she has enjoyed in her first year is not down to luck, but her invaluable business experience and
the fact that she really has been doing this for a long time.
A breath of fresh air Camilla’s Wandsworth studio is the picture of aesthetic excellence; there isn’t a jarring colour in sight. Instead, we’re surrounded by calming pastels and sleek wood furniture, so timeless that I really can’t categorise them as modern or traditional. That’s the genius of the Camilla Hampton look. Not only is her signature style a covetable fresh take on traditional, she also sticks to what she believes. Unlike the ‘it’s-what-you-want’ designers that many frustrated homeowners stumble across, Camilla knew from the start that she wouldn’t be able to service clients regardless of what they wanted. She was always going to stay true to herself. For clients, this is a breath of fresh air. ‘They value my honesty and appreciate someone who is not afraid to say “That works best in the bathroom,” instead of needing to have it on display in the living room… They’re paying me for my opinion.’ - 22 -
Business is business It’s clear she knows what she’s doing, and this knowledge extends beyond interiors. ‘A business is a business. It doesn’t matter whether you’re selling staples or whether you’re doing interior design, it’s a business at the end of the day, and what I’d been doing in the City has absolutely taught me how to do that.’ So maybe her successful first year is partly down to luck. It was, after all, lucky that she had many years of business experience, as well as having tried and tested designs in homes of her own before experiencing the pressure of doing it for someone else. ‘It was an opportunity for me to make mistakes, and to be able to learn more about what I’m doing,’ she explains when I convey my thoughts.
threat. She believes that they have created a middle market of people who, 10 years ago, may not have had the means or interest in their home’s interior. Camilla also believes that people will always have a go at it themselves and wants them to know that she’s here in her beautiful studio, ready to welcome anyone who wants to pop in for a little chat and a little inspiration. ‘I want people to feel like I’m their local interior person,’ she tells me. Since there’s hardly a pair of curtains in the area that her seamstress hasn’t worked on, I’d say that’s wholly attainable.
Dreaming up inspiration
The new market
Meeting someone who clearly has no trouble coming up with ideas, the thing I really want to know is where she finds her inspiration. ‘I have incredible dreams; I genuinely wake up in the morning and write things down,’ Camilla enthuses. Though that may not be of much use to aspiring designers, she very kindly divulges her current obsession: ‘At the minute, I’m inspired by the Dolce & Gabbana collection – with its really rich sumptuous colours and lace. I want to do a room that’s almost entirely white but with dark navy blue cushions and lace edgings,’ she explains. It sounds dreamy, I can only hope her next client will give her carte blanche to go for it – at least then, if it can’t be me, someone will be able to enjoy it. n
For a designer starting out in the age of social media, Camilla can see the influence it has had on the industry. But she doesn’t see sites like Pinterest or Instagram as a

Home designs For this creative maven, designing her own home has, in fact, been a highlight. ‘I really enjoyed being contemporary, moving away from the traditional, but also really trying to hinge on this idea of combining modernity with tradition. I wanted the kitchen to disappear completely and for it to be all about the dining room and I think I’ve managed to achieve that,’ she says. I agree, and the pictures are irrefutable proof that, when it comes to interiors, Camilla has an eye for aesthetic.

LITTLE TREASURES A Clapham-based childrenswear designer, Daisy Barnes, has opened a new online store stocking a range of premium items for babies and children aged 0-four. SPLISH SPLASH POTS & PAINTS Get creative with your little ones this January with a visit to the Pottery Café in Battersea, where trained members of staff are on hand to help with imaginative exploits (and provide sustenance for hungry artists with delicious treats and freshlybrewed coffee for grown-ups). Whether you want to design your own collection, or browse the experts’ offerings at the front of the café (including the likes of Emma Bridgewater) there’s bound to be an activity to suit everyone.
Booking advised, especially at weekends or during school holidays. 153 Northcote Road, SW11 6QB 020 7223 3388 (pottery-cafe.com)
There are plenty of puddles (or, if they’re lucky, snow piles) to jump in at this time of year, so make sure your little ones have the best protection for vulnerable tootsies. Hunter wellies are renowned for their hardiness, and at Trotters this winter they’re available in four bright colours, meaning excitable puddle-jumpers will be much easier to keep an eye on.

parent trap: NappyValleynet NappyValleyNet.com has become an online sensation in the four years since founder Susan Hanage, aka Annabel, unleashed it, with more than 80,000 visits to the site. An invaluable tool for parents based in south west London seeking to swap tips and share advice, we’ve teamed up to post some of the most pressing topics posted on the site
If you could offer me one piece of advice, what would it be? I’m a first-time mum-to-be and, basically, I am wondering if you could give me one tip or bit of advice that you were given that you found invaluable during the first few months/year of your baby’s life. What would it be? Can be anything at all – fun, serious or trivial – I’d love to hear it. Re: If you could offer me one piece of advice, what would it be?
with feeding and nap times. We are all creatures of habit and so it’s no great surprise to learn babies benefit from knowing how their day is broken down. Although I didn’t do this straight away with my first, he responded really well when I did bite the bullet (it can take a while to get it to work and it’s not always easy as it can mean staying home a fair bit in the early days – persevere!!!) and with my second he took to it like a duck to water. I may have been lucky but we have never had an evening interrupted since we got him home from hospital – he has settled perfectly from 7pm-10.30pm and he now (from 13 weeks) sleeps through from after his last feed at 10.30 until 7am. So the routine, when it works, can mean a proper night’s rest for you. (4) Get yourself Gina Ford’s Contented Little Baby routine book. Even if you don’t implement anything or everything there is some invaluable advice in there.
Tue Aug 20, 2013 5:46 pm Fill your freezer full of gorgeous, tasty meals that are easy and quick to serve up. You will be so glad of them in those first few days/weeks!
(5) Don’t have baby in bed with you – they need to learn the right sleep associations. Otherwise you will be making it hard for yourself down the line as that is what baby will always need to get to sleep.
Tue Sep 10, 2013 1:29 pm Follow your OWN instinct. It’s very natural to be nervous and seek advice, but as you can already see, it can be overwhelming. You will find what suits you and your baby. Don’t rush to get stuff you are not sure you need – you can send your husband out to the shops later and get stuff if you need it. Don’t let visitors disturb the baby’s sleep just because they fancy looking and holding etc, put your baby first. Finally, their immune system really is sensitive in the first couple of months of their life, so keep grubby hands off them. Make people wash their hands.
(7) Don’t expect it to be Mills and Boon. Although, we are led to believe having a baby is the most amazing experience, no one tells you about the hard bits. It is amazing and it gets more amazing and that’s how we end up with more than one child, but it’s hard work and you put your life on hold for six months until you come out of the fog. Unless you are really, really lucky and end up with an easy baby first time around.
Tue Sep 10, 2013 2:11 pm (1) Don’t be afraid to ask for (or hire) help, whether it’s family coming over to help tidy and cook, or a maternity nurse or mother’s help – it can make the world of difference.
Thu Sep 26, 2013 8:12 am (2) Take a look at baby hammocks – my little one (second boy, now 16 weeks) has slept like a log in it since day one. It’s a nobrainer – they snugly hold the baby and replicate the feeling of the womb, they keep the baby’s head at a slightly elevated position (good for reflux – both my boys have it) and prevent flat head syndrome. They also help the baby learn to settle back to sleep easily as the movement rocks and bounces. I wish I had had one for my first child – it has saved many hours spent pacing the room in the middle of the night, rocking and bouncing to soothe them back to sleep. (3) Try and get into some sort of routine early on, especially
Do not put your baby down in a drawer temporarily then forget about where you have put it and close the drawer. We did that with our first and after a frantic search found her happily asleep! Thu Oct 10, 2013 10:01 pm Just treasure those short few weeks when they sleep like a little frog on you. Remember everything, take hundreds of photos and videos. Don’t sweat the small stuff and don’t listen to your parents or in-laws. It goes so quickly and is so, so precious. Good luck!

PROPERTY WATCH Experts share their invaluable knowledge and shine a light on local property news and developments
A grand reception Knight Frank showcases an exciting sixbedroom family property on Hendham Road
A
t 3,477 sq. ft. and boasting five/six bedrooms as well as a double reception room, a beautiful south-facing garden and off-street parking, this is certainly a property that deserves a closer look.
Whether your priority is finding room for entertaining, or making the most of the floorspace for energetic children, the well-balanced living and reception rooms benefit from high ceilings and large windows, ensuring these family spaces are light and airy with a spacious feel. The large entrance hall is flanked by flexible reception rooms featuring wooden bi-folding doors, which can be positioned to change the dynamics of each living space. A bay-fronted double drawing room with elegant twin marble fireplaces leads to the showstopper in this property – glass doors from this feature room follow through to a superb kitchen/dining space (complete with Aga) at the rear of the property. In turn, two sets of double doors draw the eye out onto a paved terrace which overlooks a mature and private south-facing garden. On the lower ground floor, prospective buyers will be pleased by the spacious family room, cloakroom and wine store that comprises this level of accommodation. Moving up though the house, the first floor is home to the generous master suite, complete with dressing room and en-suite shower room. Overlooking the garden at the back of the house, there are two further double bedrooms (one currently in use as a study) as well as a guest bathroom. At the top of the property are the final two double bedrooms, complete with another sizeable bathroom and access to the large loft space. Of course, finding the perfect property also means finding the perfect location, and Hendham Road is a wellpostioned in a London hotspot. Situated off Trinity Road and close to the amenities of Bellevue Road and the open spaces of Wandsworth Common, potential house hunters will also find that both the underground at Tooting Bec and the overground station at Wandsworth Common are a short walk away. The area is also extremely well served by good state and private schools, ideal for those browsing with a family in mind. n

Lollipop stop Savills sponsors local lollipop ladies and men
I
n 2012, Wandsworth Council decided to end school crossing patrols as part of an effort to reduce its spending by more than £70 million. Sadly, this put the jobs of local lollipop ladies and men in jeopardy, and a service formerly funded by the local authority was passed on to schools. Having already faced budget cuts of their own, a number of schools were unsure if they’d be able to afford to keep the service in place.
Savills decided to spring into action, providing support to ensure children stay safe on the roads. Robin Chatwin, director at Savills Wandsworth, Battersea and Clapham offices, explains: ‘The safety of young children going to and from school is incredibly important. At Savills, we felt this invaluable service should not be stopped. A third of schools in the local area formerly used a lollipop person, one of which was Honeywell Infant School. In collaboration with its Parent Teacher Association, we have paid for two lollipop ladies to remain in place for the next two years, keeping their school crossings safe.’ With children arriving at school during peak times, failing to provide a crossing service would not only disrupt the flow of traffic, but could also result in dangerous and potentially devastating accidents. Jane Neal, head teacher of Honeywell Infant School, was naturally enthusiastic about the support, commenting: ‘It is great to see the business and local community working together to ensure the continuation of this much valued local institution. Savills sponsorship is extremely generous and without it we would have lost the service.’ n

New team member Savills is pleased to announce Max Green as the new head of sales for Savills Nightingale Lane office joining Robin Chatwin’s established team across Clapham, Battersea, Wandsworth, Balham and Tooting. Robin Chatwin, director at Savills, comments: ‘With a decade of industry experience under his belt, and half of it spent in the local patch, Max is perfectly suited to head up our Nightingale Lane office. We’re delighted to have him on board.’ Max began his career in Cheltenham, learning the ins and outs of the business with a local estate agency, before making the leap to London in 2009. He has lived and worked as an agent in the area for more than five years, covering a patch including much of Clapham and Wandsworth, and has a wealth of knowledge about the local property market.
