Dear Resident, I would like to ask you a question: can you operate your lawn mower? If you have a balcony or a patio, how would you go about growing salad leaves? London is blessed with some of the most verdant parks, garden squares and commons in the world and we all know how to make the most of these. However, when it comes to the exterior spaces attached to our homes, we are a bit less adept. My gardening extends to seasonal weed removal (during which I usually become despondent and give up). Many friends and colleagues also admit that the art of gardening is something they feel out of touch with; are we losing our green-fingered touch? In a bid to get closer to nature, I popped down to Battersea Flower Station to meet Lisa McCormack and John Schofield, two local residents who opened this community garden centre in December last year and are on a mission to make time spent working on your garden more enjoyable and garden centres less intimidating (p. 8). The Journal has also spoken to garden guru Caroline Garland to learn her top tips for maximising outdoor space (p. 12). As it won’t just be you enjoying the sunshine this summer, we have rounded up the best summer holiday camps for children and activities to keep them occupied from July to September. Smiles all round (p.24).

BATTERSEA

Jubilee Footbridge A new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Thames has been approved by Wandsworth Council at a planning committee meeting on June 6. The Wandsworth Guardian reports that the bridge, designed by Batterseabased architects One World Design, is planned to connect Battersea to Fulham and will commemorate the place where the Queen boarded her barge during the Diamond Jubilee Pageant last year. Further approval from Hammersmith and Fulham Council is needed before the Jubilee Footbridge project can go ahead, but the approval from Wandsworth Council is a step in the right direction for the build. Ride the carousel or take a spin on the teacups, but if that’s not your cup of tea, then grab some lunch from one of the many gourmet food stalls and sit down to watch the Wimbledon Men’s tennis final, which will be playing on large outdoor screens. There will also be a fair-trade market. The fête will support Abbie’s Army, a deserving charity for children with brain cancer.

Over 100 residents, family and friends attended a joint street party on Galesbury Road and Jeypore Road on 8 June. A group of local residents decided to organise the event to bring the local community together and reclaim the streets for the children. Jacksons, a local estate agent in south west London sponsored the event, which enabled the addition of a bouncy castle and sports instructor for the children on the day, plus a live band to finish off the party. All of those involved kindly donated food and drink, bringing out BBQs for everyone to use, which helped create a real sense of community. Children set-up stalls selling homemade lemonade and old books and toys and the day was a real success with many residents meeting each other for the first time. Everyone enjoyed themselves so much there has already been talk of planning another event in the future.

ow does your garden grow? According to recent research by IKEA, 7.4 million British homeowners admit that they never use their gardens, so potentially this is a question that the average Brit might not be able to answer. Over half of those interviewed revealed that they are embarrassed by the state of their outdoor space, with a further 27 per cent admitting that mowing the lawn presents a more challenging prospect than undertaking a spot of DIY (ikea.com/gb/en/ about_ikea/newsitem/outdoor_living). All facts revealed by the study point towards a very sad, but potentially true statement: as a nation we are losing our green-fingered touch – a sorry state of affairs for such a verdant country. All is not lost, however, especially as the study also flags up the fact that British gardens are seen as one of the most important ‘rooms’ in the home. Highlighting that while we might not necessarily have horticultural know-how available at our fingertips, gardens are still important to us, as is maximising the outdoor space afforded to us, especially in a capital such as London. And where there is a will, there is a way. No company has quite taken the message of The Royal Horticultural Society’s National Gardening Week (held annually each April), which aims to get the nation gardening again, so close to heart as Battersea Flower Station. This green corridor on Winders Road is a haven for flora and fauna, created by two local residents and opened on 1 December last year. The benefits of gardens and gardening are multifarious and this business aims to reinforce these joys for its customers; proving how simple it is to make the best of every window box, balcony, patio and garden in London and beyond. This is a garden centre with a difference. Lisa McCormack left her job in marketing and advertising to set up Battersea Flower Station, a project she regarded as ‘real,’ after 20 years in the corporate world. When she was introduced to her business partner John Schofield, a gardener from the tender age of five, the pair began a journey that would result in the transformation of an 800-square-metre area of wasteland alongside railway tracks into a thriving community hub for gardens. Lisa’s partner Scott also joined the duo on their journey, quitting his job to help support and manage the burgeoning business. ‘I am not a gardener and I find garden centres really intimidating, but I wanted to leave the corporate world to create something of value,’ says Lisa. The group searched for three years before they found the plot that was to become Battersea Flower Station, a centre that no one can label intimidating. Brightly painted signs in -9-

John’s Golden Gardening Rule Be bold and keep it simple. Don’t chose lots of little plants, opt for fewer statement plants. Always look after what you’ve got – our climate isn’t quite as awful as we imagine and pots dry out rapidly.

relatable terminology signal the location of climbers, flora, olive trees and grow-your-own vegetables, while multi-coloured bunting criss-crosses the sky above visitors’ heads. Red sheds containing neatly-arranged rows of plant pots, seeds, gardening tools, accessories and beautiful vases and cake stands are scattered throughout the plot. Lisa tells me that no question is too stupid and they relish the opportunity to provide assistance to all their customers. ‘We’ve also recently taken on our first official employee,’ exclaims Lisa. ‘Rebecca Clarkson is our resident florist.’ Operating from a little Wendy house, with her lop-eared bunny rabbit assistant, Rebecca (pictured right) creates whimsical bouquets, selecting interesting wild flowers sourced from London markets. Battersea Flower Station not only stocks plants and trees to liven up green spaces, as well as greenery for the home, John also gives free garden and balcony consultations, offering advice by either visiting the space or viewing a picture. ‘Lots of people just need a bit of help, but they don’t necessarily want to revamp their garden completely,’ says John. He explains that people tend to buy individual plants when shopping for their gardens and don’t consider how they will fit into the space as a whole. He poses the question: ‘You would never do that with a room in your home, so why does your garden get that treatment?’ From plants to preserves, Battersea Flower Station is no one-trick-pony. The gift shop stocks locally made jams and chutneys, pots from Kew and handmade soaps and candles from Crouch End. John adds that if you cannot find what you are looking for within the leafy confines of the centre,

the team will do their best to assist you in sourcing it, plus they also offer free local delivery. The business feels like a far cry from many modern-day garden centres, in which teenagers sit behind tills and the staff are far from experts. Lisa proudly proclaims, ‘There are a few gardening chains in this area so I think there is a place for a local independent. The feedback has been amazing, and the vicar came over from the church across the road and thanked us for making Battersea feel like a village.’ The duo’s dedication to the great outdoors is heartening, and incredibly pertinent considering - 10 -

the current threat to British wildlife. Residents will not have failed to notice reports of dwindling bee populations and the gradual loss of wildflowers in the countryside and nature reserves. In fact, over the past 50 years we’ve seen a huge reduction of wildflowers in the countryside, which play a vital role in biodiversity and creating a habitat for pollinating insects. The Royal Horticultural Society states that: ‘Gardens are increasingly recognised as important sources of nectar and pollen for insects. It has been estimated that the value of insect-pollinated fruits and vegetables grown in the UK is about £220 million a year.’ At the same time, The British Beekeepers Association reports that a third of all honey-bee colonies were lost over the winter of 2012/2013, which is more than double the losses of the previous year. This organisation is dedicated to preserving the little creatures and conducts a winter survival survey every year. Its most recent investigation reveals the shocking statistic that across Britain on average 33.8 colonies were lost in every 100, compared with 16.2 the previous year. It would appear that the primary cause of such dramatic devastation is the continual poor and changeable weather during 2012 into 2013 and the arrival of a very late spring. John, a self-taught gardener with a thirst for knowledge and more than 500 gardening books on his heaving shelves at home, comments on the situation, arguing that we have a much more diverse habitat for honey-bees in London than we would imagine. ‘Everyone can play their part in helping the bees. Surprisingly, London gardens are rich habitats. People who don’t live in London think we are a barren wasteland, but sometimes the countryside is a barren wasteland these days because it’s all agricultural.’ He adds that: ‘If you take a strip of suburban London gardens, there is a massive diversity of plants – south west London is the hotspot for bee conservation.’ He explains that we live in a micro-climate and London is one of the kindest parts of the UK, temperature-wise for bees. The winters are not too intense (though their human counterparts - 11 -

might cringe at the sight of this statement) and plants do flower throughout the winter. If you are trying to help the bees, he advises, ‘Don’t be too tidy by continually cutting back your plants, let things die down naturally.’ Specific species of plants can also help, of which John can discuss in detail with you at Battersea Flower Station. Creating your own garden oasis in London is not as difficult as you might imagine. John also divulges some species that his garden in Balham would not be without. ‘I’ll tell you what I love at the moment; I am pretty obsessed with flowering dogwood. It’s an amazing flowering tree with very delicate flowers which thrives in London gardens,’ says John. He also admits that sales of seeds sometimes overtake flowers and that customers are increasingly keen to try their hand at growing their own food, whether it be simple salad leaves and herbs, or the slightly more tricky tomatoes, which take a lot of attention. Lisa, who is learning the tricks and tips of the trade from John, adds that they sell seeds of all kinds so that people who don’t have big sprawling gardens can grow whatever their outside space affords them. John and Lisa leave me with an intriguing thought: ‘Growing your own garden is easier than you would assume,’ they say. ‘There are things which are tricky, but equally there are flora that people can grow very simply.’ The pair are keen to break the gardening myth that only the natural-born gardeners and greenfingered among us can rejoice in resplendent, leafy gardens, and considering the beauty of their calm garden centre, I can believe it. Wandering past lush ferns with the wind rustling through countless leaves, one completely forgets that just above the Battersea Flower Station sits a railway line; and that is the beauty of a fantastic garden. You completely forget your present location and are transported, even just for a moment to an Eden of your very own. n

Border Control Garden designer Caroline Garland talks to us about living in south west London, her passion for planting and working with local gardens

job where we were asked to fill in a swimming pool and put the garden back on top. Local influence: South west London has everything going for it, and it’s full of gardens. It doesn’t matter how small a garden is, with some help you can make it a wonderful space. South west London is particularly well-endowed with good-sized gardens, which are being redesigned as additional ‘rooms,’ complementing the house. I definitely love changing the face of Wandsworth and Clapham. I have completed 18 gardens in the local area since 2011, many of which I am really proud of (the remainder required some level of client-designer compromise). I like a challenge, so I enjoy small London gardens requiring imagination, with a free rein in style. Top tips for Londoners: Amateur gardeners tend to spend money on plants they don’t know much about, they plant into unprepared soil and plan bad layouts. A garden should be a space that you are physically compelled to walk in to and the initial design is crucial. When you’re beginning, some things can wait (such as installing a water feature) but other things should be done sooner (planting trees, digging over the beds and adding new soil). If you know what your final garden will look like, you can work towards it season-by-season, year-by-year. n

Caroline Garland by Angela Spain

Style & favourites: My style is vintage; I love potagers (kitchen gardens), raised vegetable beds, cottage gardens and soft planting. I always find myself veering towards the romantic but I also love the mix of structural shapes with soft planting. I’m getting slightly fed up with the ubiquitous grasses that have become rather popular. Inspiration & creativity: I liked the mix of Christopher Bradley-Hole’s Telegraph Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show – structured rectangular ‘slabs’ made up of hedging, interspersed with wild flowers. But then, I also loved Chris Beardshaw’s Arthritis Research UK Garden (quite over-the-top generous planting, strong on colour and form) and Nigel Dunnett’s original RBC Blue Water Roof Garden. Prince Harry’s garden was clever but it was ugly. I think designers often get so carried away with the design that they forget that a garden should have beauty. Going back in time, the Gertrude Jekyll and Rosemary Verey gardens were beautiful, and that romantic look (old roses and peonies in repeat planting along a herbaceous border) might well come back in fashion. Garden design: The London garden tends to be quite small, but into that space a client often wants a place for entertaining, a water feature, garden shed and trampoline – on top of being well-designed, fashionable and low-maintenance. In most cases, compromise is needed as a minimalist garden isn’t always realistic for a client with children. Clients often have big ideas even if the budget isn’t huge, which is great, but we do have to be realistic. A garden can’t be done for tuppence and it can be difficult to explain that a piece of stunning York paving costs a minimum of £100 per sq. metre, for example. Memorable projects in the past have included a garden in which we excavated a lawn only to find an air raid shelter, and a

David Cuffe, one of London’s most trusted veterinarians, takes a moment out his of schedule to talk to the Residents’ Journal about the local community and our pets The maroon awning of David Cuffe & Associates veterinary surgery, established on Abbeville Road in 1996, is synonymous with respite and care for our animal companions. What was the original ethos of the business? David Cuffe & Associates is a veterinary surgery serving the local community. We are open seven days a week and all of our staff are fully-qualified with a vast range of experience in their respective fields. The reason behind choosing my name was to get back to an earlier era where people took responsibility for their actions and didn’t hide behind a limited company. I spent 11 years running The Ark Veterinary Group, and while I still think that is a great name, I wanted complete transparency in the local community. Now I know many of the faces that come into the practice and they know me as well.

are also just about to launch a check-up service whereby you can book a home visit from a vet. This year my son has launched CleverConnect (clever.connect.com). Part of his remit is transferring injured or sick pets in comfortable luxurious surroundings between specialists; a vital service when you consider how many miles your pet might have to travel to be seen by a specialist in a particular field. We also work to rescue abandoned animals and rehabilitate strays to local sanctuaries. Have you noticed any prominent pet trends in south west London? I remember when I first moved from Ireland you could buy monkeys on Brick Lane, a horrible trade that thankfully has been largely wiped out in the UK. Two of the most recent trends are the rise of numbers of pugs and crossbreeds, such as the humorously named cockerpoo and labradoodle. The other thing is a huge swing towards pedigree cats, and a slow return of the bigger dog (like my Ella, a lurcher).

Is the concept of community something that is very important to you? Yes, definitely. I think it is important to know your neighbours and to work together as a community to better the place What do you love about south west London? s surgery & Associate David Cuffe in which you live. I also oversaw the canine festivities at the Abbeville Fete on 29 June. I love judging the dogs and giving out ribbons, it makes the children so happy to see their pooch crowned top dog.

David Cuffe’s top tips for first time pet owners

What are you looking for in a prize-winning canine? Well, one year a little girl entered her pet in the competition and when it came to presenting him, she wheeled up a little stuffed toy on wheels – we decided her ‘pet’ had to win the exotic class!

Cats need very little attention during the day, but one big proviso: get one cat, not two. They will tolerate each other, but prefer to rule the roost

What services does David Cuffe & Associates offer for local residents with pets? We have a wide range of extra services to complement the surgery. We run new puppy classes teaching obedience and basic skills on a Sunday evening in the Abbeville Road branch, and we

SWING IN THE PARK

After a successful debut last year, Banana Cabaret’s Comedy Festival returns to The Bedford for what promises to be eight fantastic nights of non-stop laughter. Some of the biggest names in the business will be taking to the stage, including, among others, Lee Mack, Lee Nelson and Milton Jones. Much of the line-up will be sneak peeks of what will be performed next month at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and this year there will also be comedy workshops for both adults and children.

Twinkling bike lights promise to rival the stars on the night of 13 July, as thousands of cyclists hit the road for a 60-mile night ride from London to Brighton. Last year, 5,000 cyclists took part to raise money for the British Heart Foundation’s Mending Broken Hearts appeal and this year the charity is expecting even more participants. Those registered to take part will meet on Clapham Common at 11pm and set off with their assigned group shortly afterwards. So why not get your helmet on and help tackle heart disease.

Battersea Park is hosting a free afternoon of live jazz, swing and folk music, performed by the Speakeasys and Tatcho Drom. Bring a picnic, stretch out on the grass and soak up the sax chords which will be floating through the air from the bandstand. The Anonymous Travelling Market will also be setting up shop for the day by the music, with a host of stalls heaving with food, drink and handmade goodies. What a wonderful way to while away a Sunday afternoon.

The Friends of Clapham Common also know how much residents love their canine companions, which is why it has organised a dog show and a dog micro-chipping service on the day. Just one of the options for lunch includes a barbecue at La Baita, the Common’s café situated close to the fête area, followed by a handmade luxury cupcake from one of the many stalls. On Sunday, the Common will play host to around 30 stalls, selling everything from gourmet cakes to books. Many of the area’s favourite local businesses and well-known charities will be setting up to sell their fabulous goodies. If all this is not enough to

get you in the summer spirit, there will be live performances from Steel Band Music Ltd and The Whitlam. For all those avid Wimbledon fans who noted the day with a pang, don’t worry. The men’s tennis final can be viewed on a huge outdoor screen so you won’t miss a moment of the nail-biting action. With all this and much more, the day promises to be spectacular and undoubtedly the first of many.

FOOD & DRINK Delicious dinners and tasty cocktails

The Orient Express by way of Battersea Louise Hart pays a visit to Red Pocket and travels to far-flung destinations through her tastebuds

S

moke and fire may be overrated when it comes to a visit to the theatre. However, as I realised recently, there is definitely a place for theatrics in the dining room. As my waitress removes the wicker lid of my dim sum starter with a flick of her wrist, a flurry of steam overflows the ridge of the cauldron, and a waft of scent results in my mouth watering and my pupils dilating. This is exciting stuff. The Red Pocket restaurant, nestled inside Hotel Verta beside the river, knows a thing or two about setting the scene. The hostess and waiting staff are all clothed in traditional Chinese dress, the open kitchen adds an element of the theatrical and every cocktail features a touch of the exotic, so that when they arrive, the flavours instantly transport you far from London’s muggy confines. My companion and I quaffed a Red Lotus cocktail, which balances parma violet-sweetness with lots of ice and the slightly bitter Raspberry Stolichnaya Vodka and Lichido Liqueur. When cooing over cocktails subsides, I sit back to digest the setting. The Hotel Verta is very modern and the attention to aesthetic continues in Red Pocket, which features sleek booths and tables under large inverted bowl lampshades and a cacophony of little silver boomerangs like birds circling above. Restaurant operations manager Weng Kong Wong has been a dab hand in the kitchen for the last 20 years; most recently he worked in London’s celebrated Hakkasan restaurant. We enjoyed a selection of dishes, including the aforementioned signature steamed Xiao Long Bao dim sum in seven flavours. The little rainbow-coloured parcels (made from natural colourants such as vegetables) contained corn-fed chicken and blue swimmer crab meat. We also had a king prawn curry and can confirm that Wong and his co-chef Kee Hock Teoh are not stingy with the key ingredient: prawns. Dessert was a round

dome of cheesecake on a wafer-thin biscuit base topped with a thin layer of rich kiwi coulis. When we finally waddled out of the restaurant, truly sated, the sun had sunk below the horizon and we took an amble along the riverside. Just one tip though: hire your private helicopter to fly you over there (there’s a helipad just next door), because the journey from Clapham Junction Station takes a while by foot. Red Pocket, however, is definitely worth the walk. n

Eating through the seasons By Joe Lambert of Lamberts Restaurant

Recipe

I

t has proved difficult this year to know what season we are actually in, never mind deciphering what is actually in season. With the supermarkets flooding the aisles with ‘nearly in season’ imports it becomes even more confusing and the true ‘seasonaire’ (those eager to buy seasonal produce) has to be very careful when filling their trolley.

The smatterings of sunshine we had in June have just about managed to do the trick for the vegetable crop. Though it’s always sad to see the end of the short asparagus season, I am buoyed by the incoming delights that July brings. The usual summer suspects start to rear their heads with cracking strawberries, raspberries and tomatoes on the shelves – we take full advantage of this at home and rarely a day goes by without at least one punnet of strawberries disappearing. I find in July, the Scottish fruit is the most flavoursome. Courgettes are always abundant – no matter how few plants I grow, we always seem to have too many. Courgette carbonara is a winner on the dinner table; roast your courgette (a long, slow affair) with garlic and red onions to draw out the moisture and caramelise the onions, then serve it with crusty bread for lunch. The warmer weather brings more fish to the table; mackerel and plaice are always great value in the summer months. Ask the fishmonger to clean them for you and then roast them whole. Sea trout and rainbow trout make great seasonal alternatives to the rows and rows of flabby, fatty supermarket salmon. Poached and flaked into a salad of new potatoes, peas and watercress, they make an absolutely delicious dish on a summer’s day. The recipe I have chosen takes advantage of lamb at the height of its season. This lamb salad is a great alternative to a roast on a Sunday. I hope you enjoy. n

a taste of catalonia Situated on Battersea’s bustling Northcote Road, Rosita and the Sherry Bar is one of the most exciting new restaurants in south west London to hit our radar. Run by the husband and wife duo responsible for the wildly popular Lola Rojo restaurant and deli, this venture serves Catalan specialities, including, of course, a variety of tapas. With food cooked on a Josper charcoal grill imported from Spain, you can’t get much more authentic than this. Rosita is also a must for the sherry connoisseur, with its 25 varieties of the fortified wine.

Joe’s Slow Roasted Lamb, Apricot, Red Onion, Watercress and Toasted Almonds ( Serves 4 ) Shopping list: • Lamb – ask your butcher to bone and butterfly half a leg • Six cloves of garlic, three medium red onions • Two apricots and a handful of flaked almonds • One sprig of thyme (or rosemary depending on your taste) and 100g of watercress Preheat the oven to 200C and place the lamb leg in a small roasting tray so it fits quite snugly, season liberally with sea salt, black pepper and three cloves of garlic smashed with the back of a knife. Pour over a glug of rapeseed or olive oil and massage the seasoning into the lamb. Add a glass of red wine and about 200ml of water to the tray and put it in the oven. After 10 minutes, turn the oven down to 100C and leave to cook for around four to five hours, making sure the liquid doesn’t evaporate by adding more. Let the lamb rest for 30 minutes, then slice thinly and it should fall apart. Meanwhile, peel and chop the red onions into wedges, put them in a roasting tray, along with the three remaining cloves of smashed garlic and season with sea salt, black pepper and the leaves from the sprig of thyme. Add rapeseed oil to coat the onions and place the tray in the oven at 100C for one hour. Add the quartered apricots and stir to mix the ingredients together. Cook for a further 30 minutes until the apricots are starting to lose their shape. Then leave to cool, but not to go cold. Next toast the flaked almonds, and while the apricots and lamb are still warm, but not hot, add them to a serving bowl with the watercress and toss as if you were dressing it. Finally, sprinkle with the toasted almonds and serve.

A Tale of Two Scents

Into the light

Scent connoisseur and creator of some of the most luxurious and exclusive fragrances in the world, Roja Dove has just launched two new perfumes, one for men and one for women. The Enigma range is inspired by mystery, but remains ‘self-assured and certain’ says Roja, who stocks his scents exclusively in Harrods and Fortnum & Mason. Both fragrances feature the brand’s signature rich and heady notes, with Enigma Parfum for women blending rose, jasmine, orris, geranium and vanilla to create a lighter, sweeter mood. Enigma Pour Homme is at once spicy, powdery and sensual with extracts of Cognac, tobacco and ginger. We applaud the olfactory master for his latest release.

Yves Saint Laurent Beauté’s new Forever Light Creator skintone corrector serum has caught our eye this month. Based on glycobiology research, YSL Beauté has identified that skin cells keratinocytes, melanocytes and fibroblasts all affect the skin’s texture, uniformity of colour and how it reflects light. The pearly pink fluid contains a potent blend of glycan-boosting ingredients to improve the quality of the skin; it’s beauty science at its best, with a sprinkle of YSL Beauté’s magic thrown in for good measure.

Antioxidant serums

Katie Randall translates puzzling beauty language into plain English, this month focusing on antioxidants

T

he way in which our skin reflects light has a big effect on our overall appearance, and on others’ perception of our age. Light, luminous, plump skin of an even, uniform tone has always been a preoccupation, but developments over the past few years and scientists’ work harnessing antioxidants has leapt forward, enabling us all to get a slice of the radianceinducing action. But what do these little molecules actually do and how do they benefit our bodies? ‘Antioxidants are vital for protecting and defending the body’s cells,’ explains nutrition consultant Claire Harper (thenutritionguide.co.uk). The Clapham-based diet guru offers me a science lesson on antioxidants, thankfully, in terminology that we can all follow. An antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidisation of other molecules. Put in basic terms, oxidisation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons or hydrogen from a substance and this process produces free Antiradicals. These radicals oxidant can damage and kill extras: cells. ‘This is where acai, turmeric, green antioxidants step in,’ tea, thyme, rosemary, ginger, garlic, chilli, cocoa, paprika, red wine

Super Skin Sian Jones, co-director of balance Me, talks us through antioxidants in skincare

says Claire, they counteract the Rosie Huntingt on-Whiteley’s fair of face (image: Featur eflash / Shutte free radicals and rstock.com) inhibit further oxidisation reactions. The expert adds that, ‘they are present in different forms, some are made in the body (nutrients needed for their production include selenium, zinc, manganese, copper and iron), and other antioxidant micronutrients are consumed in the diet (vitamins A, C, E and the B)’ It is important to get a wide range of different sources of antioxidants as they all serve varied purposes in the body, for instance vitamin C is water-soluble, therefore it protects against free radicals in the blood and fluids that surround cells. Vitamin E, carotenoids and co-enzyme Q10, on the other hand, are fat-soluble, so protect fat structures such as cell membranes and cholesterol particles in the blood. Claire argues that the best way to strike the right balance is to consume the brightest coloured fruits and vegetables, and include a rainbow of different colours in your diet every day. The skin naturally arms itself with antioxidants but environmental aggressors to the skin, such as pollution and the sun’s rays, deplete the supply. ‘By protecting the body from harmful free radical damage, antioxidants are powerfully antiageing for the skin, they are also protective against a range of diseases,’ Claire tells me. Antioxidants in skincare are normally most effectively employed in serums and serum gels, so that they can penetrate deep into the skin to reduce pigmentation and age spots, diminish redness and reveal a brighter glow. Apply a serum under your moisturiser and think of your serum as a targeted topical treatment for specific concerns, while your moisturiser is a blanket that nourishes the top layers of skin.

Beauty products laden with antioxidants are everywhere. What do they actually do for skin? Antioxidants are often vitamins or enzymes that help to neutralise the effects of oxidisation and the impact of free radicals on our skin cells. The antioxidants help to strengthen the skin cells against free radicals and encourage cell and tissue growth. What is your favourite antioxidant product from the balance Me range? I love them all, but one of my favourite products is our Intensive Wrinkle Repair

Cream. As well as some super active antiageing extracts, it contains two concentrated antioxidants: arctic cloudberry seed extract and blackberry seed extract. These super foods pack a powerful antioxidant punch. Which antioxidant rich ingredients should we be looking out for? Look for antioxidants rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins. High grade pressed oils and super foods are often the very best sources.

Residents’ Journal

THE PLAYGROUND Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are

Say hello to Pinksie the Whale Born from personal struggles, Pinksie the pink whale has fast become children’s new best friend. The Residents’ Journal speaks to the friends who created the storybook character to find out the next chapter of the captivating tale What mutual experiences have you shared that led to the creation of Pinksie the Whale? Marcella: Some of us have been friends for a long time and others forged friendships during this project but Beatrice Tartarone (Bea) is the link between all of us. We all had experiences with cancer (Bea with breast cancer, I lost a daughter to leukemia, and Katinka and Elizabeth have cared for friends and family affected by it). Bea had the idea of making a painful and difficult experience into something positive, creating a storybook for children. How did the character of Pinksie develop? Beatrice: The story came about when I was facing breast cancer in London and my two little girls were with Aunt Ale, one of my dearest friends. Every night Ale started to tell them a fantastic adventure about Pinksie, an imaginary whale which Ale created to comfort and inspire the girls. Bedtime with Pinksie became an important appointment, allowing them to escape and forget the tough journey that their mother was embarking on at home.
When I went to meet my girls, I too discovered the enchanted world of Pinksie.
The story represented so much for me that I was determined to publish it to help other children in need.

How does the project work? Bea: We bring artists to schools and they bring their creativity and inspire the children to become proud of themselves and their differences. Other mums immediately got involved. Delphine Kergall joined me in drawing the illustrations for the first book, Elizabeth edited the original text and Katinka worked on the design. Why do you think Pinskie appeals to children and inspires them? Katinka: Pinksie’s strength to become her own person attracts all generations. Matilde: Pinksie talks to children directly and with emotion. The character gives them strength and courage. How do you work to constantly involve children with the story? Marcella: The story is never ending. We encourage the kids to draw and write and to go on the website and send us their creations for publication online. They see their work and feel very much a part of the project. Pinksie also works very well in schools; one of the first events was a reading of the story in a Wandsworth school during anti-bullying week when the kids created posters and drawings. Matilde: This project unifies people, it creates magic between children, artists and teachers. What do you see in Pinksie’s future? Marcella: The future is to write a book a year, and to take it to as many schools as possible in London, the UK and internationally. We want to attract as many supporters and touch as many people as we can; making them aware of the charities that we fundraise for. We are hosting our first Pinksie the Whale Evening - 20 -

Action Learning for returning-to-work mums! Fri Jun 14, 2013 4.00 pm I live locally in Balham and recently set up my own HR consultancy business. I’ve got quite a strong interest in the area of new mums’ experiences of returning to work and want to start an Action Learning Set locally for women who have recently become mums and are returning to work (or are wrangling with whether to return to work or not!) I’m ideally looking for first-time mums who are thinking of returning to work in the next three months or who have just returned to work. This isn’t something I’d be looking to charge for – the only cost might be renting a space locally for the group to meet, but that would be just something I’d ask everyone to help contribute to. Action Learning, if you’ve never heard of it, is a process of group learning. It involves a group (or set) meeting every few months and members of the set working through problems/ issues they’ve got together with others in the group who can help support/challenge and enable the person to find new or different ways of handling issues they’re facing. I think it could be a really effective way to help returning-to-work-mums deal with the process of returning and reintegrating more easily/ confidently. If you’re interested, drop me an email via my company website: velvetcustard.com/ services/development.

Todd lerCalm parenting courses Fri Jun 14, 2013 2.35 pm Toddlers can be a real challenge; from tantrums to picky eating, clingy behaviour to sleep problems. Most toddler books and television programmes, such as Supernanny, only offer strict behavioural techniques such as ‘time out’ and ‘naughty steps,’ which often make both parents and toddlers even more stressed. Other toddler behavioural solutions rely on the use of toddler star charts or potty-training reward charts which provide shortterm help at best. ToddlerCalm™ provides real help for life with the ‘terrible twos.’ We offer toddler classes and workshops, suitable for all parents of toddlers aged between one and four years old. We do all of this without the use of ‘Time Out’ reward charts and ‘Naughty Steps.’ Through focusing on the science of the toddler year, including brain development, our toddler parenting classes and toddler sleep workshops help parents to avoid tantrums and aid restful sleep; turning tantruming toddlers and stressed parents into calmer toddlers and happier parents. ToddlerCalm classes are now taught at The Baby Drop, off Northcote Road, SW11 by local teacher Fran. Sales reach £675 million for Battersea Power Station

Soaring House Prices in Wandsworth

With the development of Battersea Power Station itself commencing in July, the Battersea Power Station Development Company have announced that it has secured sale contracts which amount to £675 million. The interest has been staggering for the Circus West development, which consists of 866 apartments, townhouses and penthouses, along with other amenities such as shops and offices. Circus West is just a part of the mammoth redevelopment works occurring at Nine Elms on South Bank which will transform the area into a modern hub for living and business alike.

The latest figures from the Land Registry show that house prices in Wandsworth for April this year were 10.8 per cent higher than those from last year. This increase highlights that Wandsworth is becoming increasingly popular as a place to put down roots. The Land Registry reports that average property prices in the area sit at £444,359, which is over £40,000 more than in April 2012.

Winning Wandsworth Wandsworth has just been crowned the favourite property location for affluent young professionals. Lures of the area include the quantity of Victorian and Edwardian architecture, riverside views and the area’s convenient connection to central London. Nitesh Patel, Housing Economist at Lloyds TSB, says that the demographic ‘tend to live in areas that are not far from the city centre, but also places where they can enjoy open green space and a café style environment.’

SW8: A New Power in Town Dalian Wanda, China’s commercial property giant, has announced its plan to erect a five-star high-rise hotel in Nine Elms, Wandsworth. The tower, which is said will reach 670ft (205m), will dramatically alter London’s skyline. Although the construction will not be able to rival the 310m Shard in height, the £700m build may well rival London’s new landmark in luxury. As well as the hotel, which is planned to consist of 160 rooms, 63,000 square meters of the building will be transformed into private premium apartments. As a result, the Wanda construction will be the tallest residential building in the whole of Western Europe. Wanda Plaza, Beijing © TonyV3112

Residents’ Journal

Substance & Style Currell Estate Agents is excited to announce the arrival of its recently launched office on Lavender Hill. The Residents’ Journal catches up with Victoria Farrar, Director of Currell Battersea, to discuss the bright future of latest addition to the Currell family Why did Currell, established in 1990, choose this location for its brand new beautifully designed office? We chose this location as it is directly between Battersea and Clapham, and although we are one of 12 agents on the road, this doesn’t intimidate us as we bring something different to the community. One thing which will always remain true, despite our growth, is our commitment to, and reputation for, professionalism, integrity and exceptional market knowledge. What services does the estate agency offer? Currell is a full service agency, offering sales, lettings, new homes, management and commercial. I would say that currently new homes and lettings are in high demand in the south west, however this is constantly changing. Can you tell us a bit about the team in the Battersea office? We have more than 70 staff throughout the company, a number which is growing. There is currently a small but close-knit team of four of us in the Battersea office (soon to be six). Our staff are intelligent, well-spoken and are all local to the area, which is vitally important. We also have wide-ranging knowledge of the property market as a whole, not just buying and selling. What type of properties does Currell have on its books? Our average property for sale is around £700,000 and to let is approximately £400 per week. We are a mid to top-end agent and we tend to avoid ex-local authority properties. Can you divulge a few top tips for buyers? Certainly, some of the key pieces of advice that I always pass on to my clients are as follows: use a free mortgage calculator to see what you can realistically afford; don’t forget all the fees involved in purchasing a property, including stamp duty, surveys, legal fees and furnishing; always view a property at different times of the day to see how this changes the feel of it; and it is always advisable to buy a property with a lease that has more than 80 years remaining. Why do you think buyers are drawn to south west London and to this area in particular? Battersea offers good schools, the park and the common, making it great for families, while good transport links, restaurants and bars make it attractive to young professionals. Inside the properties in the area we have noticed a definite trend for rustic interiors, but in a clean modern style, particularly with painted wooden floors. n

Happy Days Knight Frank look forward to a fête-ful day in September

F

ollowing an afternoon enjoying the festivities of the first ever Northcote Lodge Dog Show, Knight Frank is casting an excited eye towards September, when it will take part in the Bellevue Road Fair.

A judge at last month’s Northcote Lodge canine competition, sponsored by Knight Frank, Sam Sproston of Knight Frank testifies to the high standard of our borough’s pooches: ‘It was a thoroughly enjoyable event; Wandsworth definitely has the best dog selection in London.’ Wandsworth’s hounds will also reign supreme at September’s family-focused Bellevue Road Fair,

hosted by the Bellevue Road Association, which will feature a dog show in aid of the Mayhew Animal Home for dogs and cats. All breeds are welcome to stretch their legs and do battle in the many different categories, from Prettiest Lady to Waggiest Tail. After the resounding success of last year’s fair, many shops, restaurants and traders along Bellevue Road are eager to take part in the revelries this year. Against the scenic backdrop of Wandsworth Common, gifts, jewellery and confectionary stalls will line the street. Meandering crowds can prepare for amusing attractions along the way, including a fire engine for inquisitive youngsters, a hog roast for anyone peckish, the tuneful strains of a live steel band and a traditional Punch and Judy show. Alongside Knight Frank, a plethora of local businesses will be taking part in the Bellevue Road Fair, including Chez Bruce, Siena, The Inside Man, The Sweet Life, Tickled Pink, Village Books and Gardenia, to name but a few. n

Bellevue Road Fair runs from 10am to 6pm on Saturday 7 September. Registration for the dog show is at 10am (knightfrank.co.uk) - 28 -

Hidden treasure Sometimes you miss the little gems on your doorstep. Philip Bullman, Head of Bullman Booth, reveals little known facts about the area we know and love

I

don’t know about you, but I love to look into the history of the towns in which I have lived. I purchased my first property in Wandsworth in 1990 and spent many years cycling the roads and paths that flow through Battersea and Wandsworth.

In addition to some wonderful sights, there are also many interesting events that have taken place in the borough. The first ever football match under F.A. rules was played in Battersea Park on the 2 January 1864, which was also the first site for the growing of asparagus in the UK in 1850. Interestingly, when ladies were shockingly banned from cycling in Hyde Park, they headed off to Battersea Park, which allowed said ‘wanton women’ to cycle in the park in broad daylight (for shame) So much has happened to shape this area; in the 17th century the Huguenot’s arrived in Wandsworth as refugees fleeing persecution in France. The Huguenots were extremely creative and brought with them many talents, including silk weaving, printing, bleaching, dyeing and colouring. They used the power of the River Wandle to drive their machines and their presence is still greatly felt in the area, with the Huguenot burial grounds on East Hill. The River Wandle is key to the development of this area, stretching from the Thames all the way to the natural water springs under what is now Croydon. Not just a source of power for the Huguenots, the river was also harnessed by many manufacturers; there were some 90 mills at the height of its industrial prominence. In gentler times, Lord Horatio Nelson spent periods trout fishing on the Wandle, having purchased a small estate for his lady love Emma Hamilton in 1801. Despite having lost his casting arm several years before, he taught himself to fish with his other hand. Believe it or not, trout are very much alive and thriving in the Wandle to this day. Whilst much has been built around the river, it still presents a splendid and lengthy walk, curling its way through secret parks and ponds along the way. The river has been through much trauma over the years, but thankfully the Wandle Trust and its many volunteers are working relentlessly to ensure it remains a clean and cared for environment for wildlife, ramblers, fishermen and crabs (yes, Mitten crabs will enjoy the river for years to come). So on the next nice day we have, discover this little gem of a country walk in the middle of London for yourself. n

Residents’ Journal

Tate’s tips for landlords Tate Residential, the local agent with a global reach, offers essential advice for local landlords One – Potential Saving Estimated: £30 to £120 Learn how to check the water pressure on your boiler correctly and ensure that your tenant also knows how to do so. Something as simple as this will potentially save you expensive call outs for a broken down boiler (which can easily be avoided) as well as increasing the life span of your boiler. Two – Potential Estimated Saving: £380 Insurance premiums are going through the roof. Do not pay by Direct Debit, instead pay annually in advance having checked all the parameters and details carefully. We have just helped a client who had a renewal quotation from his existing insurer of £1,099. After a 10 minute phone call, we were able to achieve a reduction to £725 for the same cover.

Three – Essential A rented property with gas must have a Gas Safety Certificate, do not assume it has been already been done. The penalty for not holding a valid certificate could be manslaughter and jail. It costs from £50 upwards, but don’t get ripped off with astronomical costs of £150. Four – Potential Estimated Saving: £500 or more As summer approaches (slowly, I grant you) we recommend you begin to think about the outside spaces attached to your properties. Sure enough, there will not be ample rain fall, so if you have young plants, make sure your tenants keep them well watered. Remember that a bad garden is a real turn-off. Five – four out of five years satisfaction If possible always remember to decorate externally one year after your neighbours so that your property will always look fresher and in great condition. If the neighbours decorated last year, get it done this year. Each week, Tate Residential reveals statistics, useful comments and tips for landlords and house-hunters on its Facebook page and website to save you time, hassle and money. n

Fundraising for the future Savills’ sponsorship of this year’s Trinity Hospice Summer Party raises funds for a deserving cause Savills Clapham, Battersea and Wandsworth offices were thrilled to sponsor the prestigious Trinity Hospice Summer Party for the 20th year in a row. The event took place on the 12 June and was the 25th annual Summer Party in aid of the hospice. Hugely successful, the party raised over £53,000 for the charity, with all proceeds donated towards supporting Trinity’s incredible team of in-patient and community nurses. Claire Lubbock, who works at the hospice, is grateful for the on-going support: ‘It is only with fantastic sponsors, such as Savills, that Trinity can continue to hold such successful and fabulous events, such as the Summer Garden Party. Savills have collaborated with Trinity as a sponsor for 25 years and such loyal support has really helped Trinity’s nurses to provide their vital care to all those who have needed us over the years.’ The evening offered fun for all who attended, featuring a live auction, a prize draw and raffle, and also a silent auction with some excellent prizes on offer. Bidders were in with a chance of winning everything from tickets to see Jessie J, to two days trout fishing. Robin Chatwin, Head of Savills Clapham, Battersea and Wandsworth explains that the estate agency was thrilled to be able to help. He says: ‘Here at Savills we cannot stress the importance of supporting such an essential and important charity in the local community.’

The Trinity Hospice, situated by Clapham Common, provides skilled and compassionate care for patients throughout central and south west London. n

With Bullman Booth it’s your opinion that really matters Miss S.B: I cannot recommend Bullman Booth highly enough. The help and persistence in getting various crucial documents needed in order to exchange was invaluable. In my opinion, Bullman Booth went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that the sale went through and I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Bullman Booth to anyone else.
