Dear Resident, Achievement is undoubtedly something to be celebrated and in this issue we have spoken to some charismatic locals who have managed to buck the trend and accomplish great things against the odds. Our main feature this month examines some of the ways in which young people in the borough of Wandsworth are being encouraged to better themselves and gain inspiration from a young age (p. 7). We speak with Aaron McKibbin, an ambitious local table tennis player who has won countless awards, including, impressively, a Bronze medal at the 2012 London Paralympics (p.10). Putting our best sartorial foot forward this month, the Residents’ Journal has also discovered the stories of two very different brands led by determined creative founders making their mark on London’s fashion-scape. Battersea-based Melanie Kaye established Lemiena after falling in love with Italian artisans and their innate sense of style. She is gaining a loyal following for her beautifully crafted accessories and leather jackets, counting The Dorchester Hotel as her latest enraptured stockist (p.20). Over on Lavender Hill, Olya Lammas is creating a fashion storm in her boutique Lillidiva. She tells Lulu Rumsey about her mission to help women wear clothes that showcase their personalities, rather than being slavish devotees of unflattering trends – she’s certainly got our attention (p. 19). Please do not hesitate to get in contact, email: bbcw@residentsjournal.co.uk. We would love to hear from you.

BATTERSEA

APERITIVO TIME Aperitivo Tuesdays arrive at Bunga Bunga this month to toast sunnier times ahead. Fill the gap between the end of work and dinner time by partaking in the Italian custom of drinks and a buffet of snacks. Antipasti, pizza slices and bruschetta will be served from 7-10pm every Tuesday, as folk bands perform toetappingly catchy southern Italian songs.

PUPPY LOVE As if further proof was needed of Britain’s predilection for pooches, ITV series Paul O’Grady: For The Love of Dogs has been shortlisted for a BAFTA Award. The fly-on-the-wall snoop around the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home had eight million viewers hooked on weekly updates from the rescue charity’s base when it aired last autumn. The series is up against stiff competition in the features category from The Great British Bake Off, Grand Designs, and Bank Of Dave. The winner will be announced on 12 May. Fingers crossed.

A LOCAL BREW Set up by ten dads who met in the Belleville Primary School playground, The Belleville Brewing Company produces handcrafted beers, affectionately named after the locale (Battersea Brownstone, anyone?). The brewery is now open on Saturday mornings for tastings and beverage shopping. In time for the summer, the latest addition to the family, the Northcote Blonde, is available to sup at The Bolingbroke and The Draft House.

BATTERSEA’S BANQUET The Fabulous Feast, a week-long celebration of local food returns to St John’s Hill from Monday 13 to Sunday 19 May. Hosted by The Traders Association of St John’s Hill, gluttons can sample £15 menus offered at selected restaurants along the Hill’s length. The main event on Saturday will involve cookery demonstrations and tasting sessions. Stalls will litter the pavements from 11am to 5pm when budding gastronomes will learn how to sizzle a succulent steak, mix the perfect cocktail and (for those prepared to roll up their sleeves) fillet a fish. There’s even talk of a Great Battersea Bake Off; oven mitts to the ready!

CLAPHAM AND BALHAM

THINK TANK Three local Young’s pubs have recently been bestowed with bar-top copper cylinders, dispensing the latest innovation from Meantime Brewing: tank beer. This fresh-tasting sensation is available at The Grove in Balham, The Windmill on Clapham Common and The Plough. Unfiltered, unpasteurised fresh lager delivered straight from the Meantime Brewery is stowed in the copper caverns to mature gradually. Tank beer is all the rage in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic but in the UK it is only typically found in pubs with a micro-brewery on-site. On home soil, south west London is leading the way in the beer revolution: bottoms up!

EAR PLUGS TO THE READY Wandsworth Council and its 2M Group campaign partners have produced a series of noise contour maps which indicate the level of aircraft noise that borough residents could be subjected to if Heathrow is given the green light to develop proposed third and fourth runways. Parts of Wandsworth Common, Northcote, Balham and Clapham Common could be disrupted by planes overhead from the arrival route for runway four. Images of potential arrivals and departures maps can be downloaded from the council’s website.

THE OCADO OF DRY CLEANING There’s been something of a shake-up in the dry cleaning world south west of the river. Recently launched Dry Cleaning Square is music to the ears of residents fed up with standing in the out-of-the-door queues at the dry cleaning shop. Not only does the online company offer a collection and delivery service to customers homes, it reunites pristinely clean and ironed clothing to their owners from 6am until 11pm. Delivery and collection operates around time slots so residents in Balham, Clapham, Battersea and beyond can nominate the day and the hour time slot they would like to have their laundry mountains collected.

THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT IN SW12

(drycleaningsquare.co.uk)

It’s official: Balham has been named as one of the top five most desirable London postcodes, according to The Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide. SW12 sneaks in at number four, pipped to the post by Richmond, Chiswick and Dulwich. Favourable transport links and schools helped to land the area the title. The accolade is testament to the fact that Balham is no longer loitering in Clapham’s shadow. Its town centre has been transformed with significant private sector investment in recent years and 60 businesses upgraded or moved to the neighbourhood between 2004 and 2008. A £1.9m outer London fund from the Mayor of London will only increase Balham’s burgeoning appeal.

WATER BABIES A swimming pool built with little ones in mind has opened in Hardwicks Square. The London Baby Swim Centre is specifically designed for the under-4s and parents can enrol with their tots (from the age of six weeks) on courses to teach them to swim and have fun in the water, in a safe and nurturing environment. Newborns, who have a distinct aquatic advantage of being able to swim straight from the womb thanks to their unique ability to block off their windpipes, will be able to paddle to their heart’s content in the warm waters, which are heated to a minimum of 33 degrees.

RECYCLING LOW-DOWN Wandsworth Council is in the process of distributing new clear recycling bags to replace the orange kerbside collection sacks. The new-look bags will make it easier for recycling teams to spot common contaminants such as food waste and shredded paper. It is hoped that better visibility will show and shame repeat recycling offenders and encourage lazy recyclers to change their ways. Households will get three rolls of 30 sacks each year to stuff with the usual assortment of glass bottles, jars, cans and tins. Carrier bags and clingfilm can now be recycled at large supermarkets, and electrical equipment can be processed at the household waste recycling centre at Smuggler’s Way.

(wandsworth.gov.uk/recyclefromhome)

TENNIS STARS OF TOMORROW Wandsworth Council has teamed up with coaches from All Star Tennis and Will to Win tennis to offer coaching for budding players of all ages at six tennis courts dotted around the borough. A community tennis programme will be inclusive to players of all ages and abilities and coaching will be offered in the form of drop-in sessions, cardio tennis, mini tennis camps and adult courses. Five hundred thousand pounds has also been invested in the court facilities and improved playing surfaces to bring the courts at Wandsworth Common and Wandsworth Park, among others, up to Lawn Tennis Association standards.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT Wandsworth’s first food bank opens this month after collecting three tonnes of food thanks to donations from shoppers at supermarkets borough-wide. The stockpile holds the food bank in good stead for its opening month and it is hoped that the initial enthusiastic response to the cause will raise awareness of the food poverty occurring on our doorstep. For more information on how to donate, visit wandsworth.foodbank.org.uk. -6-

THE SKY

is the limit

Whether they are achieving Paralympic feats of endurance and skill or working to improve their local community, the young people of Wandsworth are proving themselves a credit to London. Katie Randall explores the opportunities open to young people south of the river

-7-

RESIDENTS’ JOURNAL

O

pening doors for young people has never been so important. The generation currently in full-time education will enter a fiercely competitive job market and many might miss out on higher education entirely due to a rise in university fees. The current government raised the cap of £3,375 for 2012 entry to £9,000 per year. Furthermore, in a speech given after the summer riots of 2011, Education Secretary Michael Gove poked holes in the school system, reinforcing that it was failing to provide many young people with the ‘structure, values and educational opportunities that they need.’ Faced with a somewhat tough challenge, the local council seems eager to inspire young people to be the best that they can possibly be. In 2012, for the first time ever, Wandsworth had the highest take-up of all of the London boroughs for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. The council also annually cherry-picks certain candidates worthy of recognition as part of the Active Wandsworth Sports Awards and the Wandsworth Young Person of the Year Awards.

Foster children

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Wandsworth currently has an impressive 2,074 young people enrolled on its DofE schemes -– more than double the figure of five years ago. Between March 2012 and February 2013 these participants notched up no fewer than 450 awards. In an age when children are more interested in televisual matters and the latest You Tube antics, it is quite inspiring to see such a large number of young people demonstrating such a get-up-and-go attitude. Councillor Kathy Tracey, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, explains that the achievement is no accidental coup, but the product of hard work and a dedicated DofE team on Alma Road: ‘Normally the scheme is delivered through schools, but we also have a specific site promoting and planning the courses and challenges. In today’s world, where it is crucial to distinguish yourself from competitors, it is a really important thing to have on your CV – a real feather in the cap.’ She adds: ‘The council has been striving to help more young people take part in the programme and I hope the borough sees many hundreds more getting involved in the months and years to come.’ The DofE candidates are aged between 14 and 24 and work towards bronze, silver and gold awards. Mark Chapman, Accreditation Co-ordinator for the Wandsworth Youth Service, believes the borough has such a high take-up because of the work being done to encourage schools in the area to offer the award and training up teachers to be able to run the expedition section. They have also been offering DofE awards to young people through youth clubs. He explains that is it easy to register on the course and that young people can sign up at any time at Wandsworth’s Open Award Centre, the Training and Resource Centre (TRC) on Alma Road. Mark speaks passionately about the skills that those involved can acquire: ‘The fourth section, the expedition, needs to be run by a licensed organisation, e.g. TRC. It consists of a camping course where young people need to show they can read maps, look after themselves and work as a team on expedition weekends.’ Both Kathy and Mark reiterate the fact that throughout the scheme, the candidates are required to volunteer in the local community. Mark reinforces: ‘It is important, particularly with silver and gold, that participants are working in church groups, youth clubs and charity shops and widening their horizons.’ He is certain that the course can make a crucial difference to young people’s lives, giving them the confidence to undertake tasks they would not normally tackle: ‘I know one young person who now works as a football coach based on the volunteering she did for her silver award. I also know another young man who has built up his self-esteem through the DofE awards and has lost over half his body weight doing his bronze and silver awards.’

Cllr Kathy Tracey is the point for call for all matters relating to children, education and also adult learning in the borough. She works closely with the Wandsworth Foster Care Association to ensure that in the 20 years since the closure of the borough’s care homes specifically for children, those in foster care receive the same opportunities as young people living with their biological families. She says: ‘In the last 20 years, we have closed our children’s care homes and opted for fostering programmes instead and it has proved very successful. I meet with the Foster Care Association regularly and we offer them a budget to pass on to young people to encourage them into extra-curricular activities such as swimming and after-school clubs. We work very hard to make sure that these children do not miss out and are supported and inspired.’ There are approximately 200 fostered children in and around Wandsworth and 120 carers who foster them. Another way in which Cllr Tracey and her team endeavour to provide for children in foster homes is to offer some financial remuneration to the families when they travel on holiday, paying not only for the child’s expenses but also funding part of the bill for the rest of the family. Wandsworth Young Person of the Year Award In May 2012 Sharnough Dauley-Hill was named the Wandsworth Young Person of the Year in a glittering ceremony held in the Civic Suite of the Town Hall. Organised by the trustees and Wandsworth Borough Council, the ceremony occurs every spring with certificates, trophies and prizes presented by the Mayor of Wandsworth. The award, now in its 21st year, recognises young people in the community for their achievements, courage, generous attitude or ability to overcome difficult personal circumstances. Sharnough (17 last year) grew up in care and excelled at Graveney School in SW17 where she was the Year 11 Head Girl. The council explains that she wants to study family law, where she can utilise her experience of going through the care system. Not content with just academic success, Sharnough also received a National Citizen Certificate from David Cameron and climbed Mount Snowdon for charity.

We work very hard to make sure that children do not miss out and are supported and inspired

Active Wandsworth Sports Awards These awards do just what they say on the label and offer hearty congratulations to sportsmen and women living in south west London postcodes. The ceremony, last year held in February, honoured many candidates with specific categories for young achievers. Sports Person of the Year was won by 21 year old Aaron McKibbin (read our interview with Aaron on page 10), Junior Sports Person of the Year went to Saskia Millard of the Herne Hill Harriers (athletics team) and the Young Volunteer of the Year was bestowed upon Ryan Gordon for his tireless work competing, coaching and refereeing at judo events. Into the future Another exciting opportunity encourages young people to become entrepeneurs in a Dragons Den-style competition for funds. Those seeking a platform for their ideas can apply for the Youth Opportunity Fund, of which there is £100,000 available this year. An influx of applications arrives annually for the grant and there are plenty of bright sparks ready to light up the community. The candidates must be over 11 to apply and living or studying in Wandsworth. They can bid for up to £5,000 for activities and trips, equipment, projects, building works and start-up costs. n

CASE IN POINT

Aaron McKibbin is an award-winning table tennis champion who hails from Wandsworth. He knows what it takes to get to the top and recently won a Bronze medal (class 6-8 event), with his team at the London 2012 Paralympics Images court esy of P aralymp icsG B

How did you first become involved in sport? I started table tennis at school at the age of 15; before that I played tennis from the age of four until I was 14. Once I realised I was not going to be the next Rafael Nadal I decided to find a new sport. It has always been my dream to be the best in the world in a sport and to be a full-time athlete. I found table tennis and practised and then I joined a local club in Wandsworth, called York Gardens.

How do you feel when you compete? Everyone gets nervous; people feel it in different ways and you would be lying if you said you didn’t get anxious. My team always used to make fun of me because I used to try and deal with the nerves by telling people that I never got nervous. When I’m fully focused on my game though, I can’t really hear the crowd; they tend to blend into one. Where else have you competed? I have competed all over the world in table tennis, in places such as China, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Slovakia and Croatia. I’ve been lucky enough to visit so many I find it hard to remember them all. Sport has given me some amazing opportunities that some people never get to see. I’m grateful for this.

In your opinion, could London councils and schools be doing more to get young people involved in sport? I feel that there is so much more that councils and schools can do to improve the uptake of sport in Wandsworth. We are a borough that has so much talent but I think people find it hard to get into sport professionally because of the cost. Clearly money is an issue, as it is with most councils, but school is the best place to develop kids and move them into local clubs to improve their abilities. It also keeps them off the streets and gives them a goal and focus in life, which many young people need. 2012 was a busy year for you, along with the Bronze medal at the Paralympics with team members Will Bayley and Ross Wilson, you won the Sports Person of the Year accolade at the Active Wandsworth Sports Awards; how did that feel? It was nice to win. You don’t play sport to win these sorts of awards, you do it for the pride of representing your nation, but it was nice to know that my achievements had been noticed by my local community and council.

What are you working towards currently? My main goal now is to qualify for Rio 2016 and I’m working towards that. I also have a goal of wanting to be ranked in the world top-five by the year of the 2016 Games. I train every day towards this goal. Do you have any advice for young future sporting champions? The advice I have is that no matter what people say, you’ve got to believe in yourself. I was always told: ‘you can’t do that,’ or ‘you won’t do that.’ If you have a dream and a target, don’t listen to negative people. They should drive you to achieve what you want, that’s the way it worked for me. I had great support from my family and friends and a big dream. I would not let anyone tell me I couldn’t do it and in the end, I achieved it. n

ARTS FESTIVAL

Local artist Cathy Watkins will open her Clapham studio to public audiences for the first time this month with an exhibition entitled It’s Hero Time. The series of works seeks to expose the cultural representations of boys and the relative societal invisibility of older women. Highlights include a ten-metrelong two-part drawing bedecked with press cuttings of young boys and adolescents, a battered Barbie doll sculpture atop layers of pastel-hued doilies, and a vivid representation of wizard schoolboy Harry Potter.

Battersea Park’s Pump House Gallery will host a ‘collection of curiosities’ this month in its Inspirational Objects: Nature as Designer exhibition. Curator Alison Milner’s description of the fortnight-long exhibit reveals its ambition to analyse everyday objects through their removal from their natural environments, awarding them a new meaning. Accompanying the collection is a pop-up shop of similarly inspirational objects, from which aspiring artists can find the stimulus to forge their own creative endeavours in the gallery’s first-floor workshop space.

Wandsworthians are girding themselves for the creative avalanche about to engulf them with the launch of the annual Wandsworth Arts Festival. Following a boost in funding, this year’s festival has grown a ‘fringe’ that spotlights the artistic scene within Wandsworth which will act as a testing ground for emerging talent. This year’s festival hub can be found at Wandle Triangle, on the bank of the River Wandle and has been built by award-winning architecture and design practice, Assemble. We’re highlighting 11 May in our diaries, the date of the hotly anticipated Fire Garden Magic at Roehampton Library Green.

DIZZY HEIGHTS

Running alongside Olympians might not be everyone’s idea of ‘no pressure,’ but, the excellent cause of the Right to Play 5K Challenge is likely to subdue any nerves. The organisation, which promotes the healing powers of sport as a tool to tackle the adversity faced by children affected by poverty, conflict and disease, will host the family event in Battersea Park and welcomes runners of all ages to limber up. Registration fees cover educational, sport and play programmes for a child in the developing world for an entire year.

Powerfully transcending the divide between mental illness and entertainment, Mess treads where many would fear, taking audience members to both the heights of euphoria and the depths of despair. Caroline Horton’s production tells the weary tale of recovering anorexic Josephine, who puts on a play aided by friends Boris and Sistahl. Produced following extensive medical consultation on both the treatment of and ethical issues surrounding eating disorders, the show uniquely balances acute personal struggle with a moving ensemble of original songs.

The Battersea Society takes an intellectual sojourn in high heels this month, with a talk by Manchester Metropolitan University fashion communication lecturer Dr. Naomi Braithwaite on the long and vibrant history of the towering footwear. Featuring analysis of the shoe’s historical origin as an emblem of class and status (the accessory was worn by men before their female counterparts caught on), the talk will chart the persecution surrounding heelwearers during the French Revolution and its status today as a mark of femininity.

STITCH UP The attention-grabbing textiles dotted around the Fashion and Textile Museum present a colourful jumble of patchworks, geometric-print rugs and intricate needlepoint from Kaffe Fassett: A Life In Colour, the first major exhibition on the international decorative artist since 1988. Delve a little deeper into the dizzying and cluttered installation of more than 100 works and there’s bright and cheery Missoni knitwear, nine-feet-wide knitted shawls and a tactile ‘feeling wall’ along whose bumps and weaves of fabric, visitors can run their fingertips. Five decades worth of knitwear are encapsulated in total. The museum shop will be stocking a range of fabrics and yarns, should visitors be inspired to take up their own knitting needles.

PICTURE PERFECT It was 1901 when an ambitious 19-year-old named Pablo Picasso made his first tentative leap onto the Parisian art scene. Becoming Picasso: Paris 1901 presents a collection of early works from his debut exhibition – one which depicts his interpretations of the styles of artistic greats like Van Gogh and Degas. Arriving from Madrid in May 1901, Picasso had a month to produce the works that would set him on the road to international recognition. Holed up in his Montmartre studio, he daubed up to three canvases a day, many of which hang at The Courtauld Gallery this month.

A TEMPORARY DRAMA

AMERICAN CLASSIC

With its towering Lego-like blocks of pillar-box red, The Shed has risen to life at its temporary address outside the National Theatre to present an engaging programme of new drama. The space will provide a third stage for the theatre during the Cottesloe’s redevelopment phase. Established and emerging theatrical voices will be given an equal footing here. This month Tanya Ronder’s Table unravels a 115-year yarn of family life, love, belonging, ghosts and memories, acted around a battered-looking table which forms the play’s iconic centrepiece.

Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird has been re-imagined for the stage and opens the season of alfresco dramatics at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. The treescreened auditorium will stage the poignant narrative of injustice in the American deep south followed by Pride and Prejudice and The Sound of Music later this summer.

FOOD & DRINK Lulu Rumsey gets a taste for Southsider, which does what it says on the tin

Take a walk

on the South side

I

f you were to wind up in the Southsider with no concept of where you were, you wouldn’t need to look far to get your bearings. Aside from the geographical giveaway of the name, this is a south of the river institution through and through. For one thing, although the exposed brick interior and patent leather booths evoke a New York vibe, Battersea Power Station firmly asserts its presence, looming from the walls’ chalky street-art murals and dwarfing other London landmarks into insignificance. Moreover, the Southsider is rather unconcerned with wooing custom from across Battersea Bridge; it’s far more content to quench the thirsts of residents from the southern side of the Thames. It’s a neighbourhood institution and a local hangout, but the cocktails are visually exciting and innovatively tasty enough to make this bar seem a bit exotic and a worthy staging ground for special celebrations. Drinks are extravagantly imaginative, although this isn’t reflected in the reasonable prices: a manuka honey and butterscotch schnapps-infused Butterbeer hails from Harry Potter fantasies, while the Full English Flip disqualifies any notion that eggs, bacon and maple syrup are a purely breakfast-time combination. Adding to the appeal, many ingredients are home-made, with the bar also authentically brewing its own cider. And hence South Cider was born. n

LUNCHING local Lauren Romano fills her boots at Balham dining institution Lamberts, where seasonal dishes and carefully sourced ingredients have been a local hit for a decade

T

o Balhamites, Lamberts needs little introduction. It is ten years since the bottle-green-fronted establishment opened on Station Parade bearing several of the hallmarks of fine dining but with the typical formalities watered down to appeal to the SW12 palate. This is not the sort of place where you can expect to battle through a line-up of knives and forks or over-attentive waiters. Lamberts is a local joint through and through, one which has grown with the gentrification of the locale and with Joe and his brother Mark (the owners) during its infancy and beyond. Their purist approach to singling out the best artisanal suppliers has seen the Sunday roasts served here applauded as among the best in the capital. Regular evening and weekend diners may, however, be less familiar with the recently launched lunch menu. I’m now well-acquainted. My introduction began with a slow-cooked egg yolk, simmered at 63°C for one hour (Joe fills me in on the specifics) and brine-mottled salted Longhorn beef. Perched on its bed of pickled red cabbage, it came accompanied with an olive oil-soaked crisp of bruschetta, which broke with a satisfying snap and mopped up the thick-as-treacle yolk nicely. Chargrilled mackerel, blue potato salad and lovage was a pleasantly constructed dish which succeeded in balancing a mix of delicate flavours, without leaving one struggling for attention: so far, so impressive. My main of hake fillet with parsnip purée, Shetland blacks, mussels and cherry tomato vinaigrette arrived artistically dotted across the plate. Sweet piped parsnip was zig-zagged around veiny-blue potatoes and a refreshing salad of tomatoes and salty shelled molluscs, scattered in a drizzle of amber-toned oil. The beautifully cooked fish, fresh from the day boat haul at Brixham had a crispy, peppery skin and was wonderfully seasonal, even if the dull, overcast sky outside wasn’t. The shallot tarte tatin brought a trail of biscuity sweetness in its wake and was quickly polished off. The rich mash of buttery swede infused with honey and caramelised onion made an appetising bed for the puffed-up crown of pastry to sit on and wild mushrooms and wilted gem rescued the dish from stodgy territory. By the time it came to dessert, Lamberts and I were pretty chummy. To end, a jam-like plum compote was joined with chunks of cindery, chewy honeycomb and a palate-cleansing blob of vanilla ice cream. But the meantime stout ice cream and hot chocolate pudding triumphed in a final match of unlikely flavours. The bitter, beery aftertaste undercut the darkness of the cocoa-rich pudding’s molten middle to delicious effect. Stout and chocolate make the most compatible of partners, whoever knew? I’ll hazard a guess that it is little flashes of culinary ingenuity such as this which have cemented Lamberts’ staying power. One thing’s for sure, this place will be sticking around for a while to come. n

A LILLIDIVA MOMENT Olya Lammas knows that when it comes to fashion, individuality is key. Having taken over the reins at women’s fashion boutique Lillidiva last November, she has since created a space that unequivocally embraces her distinct retail philosophy. Lulu Rumsey finds out more

B

efore she set her sights on the Lavender Hill boutique, Olya worked as a fashion stylist and personal image consultant, where she honed her experience of dressing the female form. ‘I saw Lillidiva as a chance for me to take the next step in my career and try my hand at retail,’ she explains. What makes Lillidiva unique is the bold confidence with which it recoils from stereotypical retail functions. Instead, it astutely pursues a much more satisfying end goal. For a start, Lillidiva is not all about making a sale. ‘We’re not about pushing sales here, it’s about clients actually wearing what they buy and items being flattering,’ says Olya. There are times, she admits, when she tells customers not to buy something, because she fears they have chosen something unflattering which they are unlikely to wear. ‘I read something once that said we wear 20 per cent of our clothes 80 per cent of the time.’ It’s a statistic Olya wants to change, employing the full force of Lillidiva behind her. For her, fashion styling is about far more than garments. ‘I like to think I work with personalities rather than clothes.’ For example, in-house stylist Ronke Fashola characterises herself as a ‘personal’ stylist rather than one solely focused on fashion, ‘because we look at real people and assess what it is that they need.’ This motivation has helped cultivate Lillidiva’s latest development: the addition of a personal stylist service. Customers are able to seek a one-on-one consultation and receive comprehensive advice on colours, silhouettes and textures. Stylists will also work with clients’ existing wardrobes, helping to re-fashion and reinterpret items that have lost their inspiration. ‘It’s not always about buying something new; sometimes it’s about finding someone’s style in items they already own.’ That’s not to diminish the crucial part Lillidiva’s fashionable array plays in Olya’s operation. Olya is meticulous when it comes to choosing stock, travelling to showrooms across the world to source new brands so that each season at Lillidiva brings fresh design talent. Every item must carry a discernible element of interest. For this reason, she has found herself in the past choosing only a mere three pieces after sifting through an entire collection of 300. Olya’s not a Battersea native, but working in the area has led her to scout out some favourite local spots. ‘I love Wandsworth Common and the antique shops and cafes of Northcote Road,’ she says. It hardly matters, she says, that Lillidiva’s Lavender Hill positioning doesn’t afford it thoroughfare custom, because the shop has become a destination boutique. ‘People come here specifically,’ she admits. Plans are already sketched for Lillidiva to stretch its wings beyond Battersea, to establish itself as a small London chain, beginning with a store that will open in Crouch End soon. The remit is clear: Olya will not repeat brands that are already stocked across London. And with this in mind, she seeks to carve out a firmly individual sartorial identity for Lillidiva within our fashion capital. n

ITALIAN

Renaissance

Melanie Kaye, the founder of luxury accessories brand Lemiena, invites Katie Randall for a wardrobe session, trying on her Italian, artisanal pieces

‘I

t all started when I was living and working in Italy,’ the effervescent Melanie Kaye begins her story. ‘I would arrive back in London and go shopping, but could never find garments to match the visions in my head.’ It was at this point – when most of us give up frustrated, or settle for an inferior product – that the former finance and project manager founded Lemiena Italia Collezione, a luxury accessories brand whose pieces are handcrafted by seven artisanal factories in Italy. Melanie organises distribution of the butterysoft leather jackets and suede or cashmere ‘cashminas’ (the updated pashmina, don’t you know) from her Battersea abode and supplies exclusive stockists such as The Dorchester, Muse on King’s Road and Gallery 28 on Avery Row. ‘Over the years I found myself going back to Italy to buy all of my pieces,’ explains Melanie, and while soaking up the ambience of Italy, the idea began to take shape. Each item is designed to bring effortless glamour as a key piece which can be entwined with fashion trends. Lemiena’s pieces are not trend-led, but sleek and expertly created with precise attention to detail. ‘What is important,’ the designer says, ‘is the Italian colour palette and the fact that although the collection doesn’t shout for attention, the pieces can all be worn with high-fashion garments to enhance the look or create an entirely new one.’ Many new brands are keen to establish a strong identity by dabbling with the latest trends and potentially getting it very wrong. It is refreshing to see a luxury brand that firmly understands its aesthetic and works with it, rather than diverging when the sartorial world decrees that leopard-print metallic spacesuits are ‘in’. This does not mean, however, that among the incredibly wearable cashminas, clutch bags and soft leather jackets that fit like a ‘second skin,’ there aren’t incredibly forward-thinking designs. A bright-pink suede wrap with intricate knot tassels follows the Gucci colour vein for S/S 2013 and a striking white-and-grey python biker jacket proves that Lemiena produces statement pieces with the best of them. When I meet Melanie, the first thing that captures my eye on the petite blonde’s person is her fantastic python handbag, a Lemiena staple. ‘When designing, I fix firmly in my mind that women do not want to look like everybody else, they want to feel special.’ Women regularly stop her to enquire about the origins of her pieces: ‘And I have the pleasure of telling them that I design and manufacture them

all.’ This particular bag, the Orbella, is matt python and quite possibly the perfect-sized handbag. With two large compartments, one for your quotidian items, one for your laptop, or iPad, it is a cleverly conceived staple for the busy businesswoman. Melanie herself is nothing if not practical: ‘I used to attend a lot of international business meetings in Hong Kong, Tokyo and USA with luggage, but when I travelled to Europe: Paris, Monaco, Geneva or Brussels, I would often be flying in for a day, staying overnight and then off elsewhere the next day. Therefore I needed something versatile, smart and stylish, but equally something that could hold a wash bag, work documents and a laptop.’ The fashion entrepreneur previously worked in interior design (for Louise Bradley), so the creative streak runs strong. The bulk of her career has been spent in finance, however, managing colossal payrolls and being analytical and savvy with the pennies. When not travelling between her homes in Italy and the South of France you will often find Melanie and her ‘incredibly supportive husband’ working over a cappuccino in Butcher and Grill. She also enjoys the odd roast dinner with her daughter in the Prince Albert: ‘We try everything on together and if she likes it then I know I am onto something special.’ The family moved to the area, having previously lived in Ecclestone Gardens and Halkin Place, for its fantastic location: ‘You are just over the bridge and it is cost-effective if you need storage space or a home office.’ Although she has fallen in love with all things Italian, Melanie admits that she will always love the buzz of London; ‘It is the heart of everything,’ she says. Her brand brings together both cultures, the soul of Italy and the style of London. Though it will always be exclusive, there’s no doubt a very bright future for Lemiena. We’ll see you in The Dorchester, cooing over the selection of pieces. n

ART in the park Henry Hopwood-Phillips meets Helen Renwick of the Pump House Gallery to find out more about the much-loved art institution in Battersea Park Can you tell us about the Pump House’s interesting history? The Pump House tower was built in 1861 by Simpson and Son to house a coal-fired steam engine and a pump to circulate water in the lake. It was an integral part of the park and also watered the plants and drove artificial rockwork cascades. It ultimately fell into disrepair, but was renovated between 1988 and 1992, with the assistance of an English lottery grant. To this day it still houses a deep well, although it serves a very different purpose for the community today as an art gallery. How do you decide which exhibitions to put on? The gallery specialises in socially engaged practice. Essentially this means that exhibitions are made by, in collaboration with and for the local residents. Coming up, we have Delicious Monsters: Plants of the Imagination. Four professional artists are working with four local schools to explore the range of plants in the park and will take over a whole floor of the gallery. It will teach the children and teachers new skills, as well as contributing to them feeling part of the community, building confidence and team work. (26 - 30 June).

What is the ethos of the gallery? It is a local gallery, which presents work of exceptional quality. It has an undercurrent of support and development; we have an education programme for schools in the area and work with emerging artists. We also offer a range of free workshops for people who want to learn a new skill. What is the idea behind Inspirational Objects: Nature as Designer? The first floor will be a permanent self-led workshop space so people can come in and create their own inspirational objects; this being a development of our successful family days, which are free workshops, running monthly on Sundays. The main exhibition (2 May - 16 June) will feature beautiful photography by Steve Speller and an intriguing collection of curiosities, all curated by Alison Milner. This exhibition is part of the Wandsworth Arts Festival. It is a really exciting time for Wandsworth at the moment. What genre of art do you favour? I love socially engaged art. ‘Community art’ can have terrible connotations and I am passionate about changing that perception. There is nothing more inspiring than sharing ideas and learning outside of your comfort zones. What do you see in the future for the Pump House Gallery? I’d love to continue on its upward trajectory. We are continuing to grow the education programme and I would love to see every Wandsworth school using it as a key resource. We would love to offer even more free family day workshops. We have so many ideas and artists that we want to work with and are considering running off-site activity, taking the Pump House Gallery to other areas of the borough. n

HEALTH & BEAUTY We trial the latest treatments before you take the plunge

A juice a day… In an attempt to keep the doctor away, Katie Randall trials the Purifyne Juice Cleanse diet Locally based, Purifyne specialises in providing its clients with fresh organic cold-pressed fruit and vegetable juices to cleanse the body. The company creates a thorough detox plan for either three or five days to aid over-worked digestive systems and stressed or tired minds and delivers it direct to your door. The diet also helps to readdress the juicer’s relationship with food, portion control and cravings, giving your body only what it needs.

Day 1: Imbued with a sense of purpose I flew into juice cleanse day one and was surprised how easily I adapted to my new liquid diet. When the friendly delivery man dropped off three brown paper bags for me in the morning, mere seconds passed once the door was shut and I was already ogling at powders, supplements and various juices in all colours of the rainbow. I would definitely recommend taking time to read up on all of the information that Purifyne provides pre-cleanse, as it can take a little while to get to grips with your new daily routine and what needs to be ingested and when. I felt like a biochemist in the mornings, mixing my powders and juices (I was on Juice Cleanse B, using Colosan powder for colon cleansing, rather than opting for an enema). On the first day I was not hungry at all, but by 6pm I began to feel peckish. I settled down in front of the television with a juice and, before I knew it, bedtime had crept around. I went to sleep feeling very pleased with myself, I didn’t cheat once. Day 2: Hang on. My body has cottoned on to the plan, balderdash. By midday 2pm, I was hungry, very hungry. In aid of giving this my best shot (I’m a quitter when it comes to diets), I didn’t give in. With many of its plans, Purifyne sends over some Pu’erh tea , a bitter Chinese tea that claims to help with your digestion, I turned to one of these in my time of need. I feel I should offer some warning about the teas. The taste is acquired, to say the least, very earthy. I did, however, come to enjoy my cuppa’ Pu’erh by day five; I am a creature of habit and love a regular ritual. Day 3: In my ‘tip of the day’ email from Purifyne, I was very happy to learn that a warm bath with Epsom salts is highly recommended during a cleanse – as if I need an excuse for pampering. The company also provides a Sisal mitt for dry-brushing in the mornings in small circular motions towards the heart. This kick-starts the lymphatic drainage system and gives your body a helping hand to flush out toxins. My heart sank today when I arrived at the fridge to see a dark red juice for my dinner, I had been dreading the puréed beetroot juice. It was drinkable. Definitely better with the added carrots and ginger.

Day 4: I would definitely recommend trying this cleanse during a break from work at home. Every time my colleagues opened their lunches or went out to grab a coffee, I felt a pang of jealousy. It would have been easier to be separated and to focus on smaller tasks, such as the reorganisation of my kitchen cutlery drawer, rather than the managing of a magazine. Those keen to start a juice cleanse and still work, don’t be discouraged. I survived with no dramatic consequences, but for convenience sake, I would rather juice at home. Day 5: With the end in sight I feel so much brighter and clearer of head. A friend asks if I feel tired and, when I begin to think about it, I realise I feel quite the opposite. With regular steady energy levels all day, I managed to accomplish quite a lot (and I lost a few stubborn pounds). My favourite juice by far was a refreshing mixture of apples, pineapple and mint and only the drinks with celery in them had me wincing. Post-cleanse: All in all I feel like I have achieved something quite special. Who would have thought that cravings could be so easily quashed? I even managed to turn down a lemon meringue pie in favour of spinach and apple juice. I will definitely try to continue in this new vein. Especially as I can now differentiate between what my body needs and what it merely wants or craves. n

Prices vary and there is a range of packages to suit every cleanse and goal. For more information on the Purifyne Juice Cleanse visit: purifyne.com or contact the helpful team on: 020 7720 2131

INTERIORS

DESIGN for life From stunning mood-boards to positioning bone-inlaid chests hailing from Jaipur, local interior designer Suzann Bozorgi talks Katie Randall through her personal aesthetic as well as a recent project, transforming a property in Balham into a home Suzann’s Background I’ve been interested in design for as long as I can remember, in terms of aesthetics and how things look. My family has always been involved in property, from building houses to redesigning and refurbishing, so I was exposed to design transformations from an early age. I also worked in advertising for eight years before retraining in interior design. I think that working in the advertising world gives you a keen eye for what does and doesn’t look right. The Preparation It is all in the brief. I meet the client at their home and go through a questionnaire that I have developed over time, which helps me to really understand the way they live and what their aspirations are. I also ask them to provide any images from magazines that inspire them, as well as five words to describe how they would like their designated space to feel. Once we have a true understanding of this we can produce a space that is both beautiful and functional. The Look The main objective with this home in Balham was to warm it up. The clients wanted to really create a home, somewhere that was glamorous but comfortable and a reflection of their personalities. The house had great original features and a very neutral palette but was essentially quite cold. We redecorated and refurnished the entire house, from light fittings and furniture to creating bespoke bookcases and coat storage. I like to throw in the odd unexpected feature, such as an unusual colour or piece of furniture. In this property we had a zebra-print carpet. I think all successful schemes need an element of surprise to work. The Furniture I buy quite a lot from a couple of online trade suppliers, whom I have been working with for a while and who can offer me great discounts which I can pass onto clients. - 26 -

As I have worked with these suppliers for a while, I know the standard and finishes of their products, but ordering online can sometimes be a minefield as you are reliant on tiny images. Shopping locally negates this problem as it means you can see and feel items first-hand and you can build up relationships with actual vendors. I like to shop at local shops in Balham and Clapham or on the Northcote Road for accessories and small pieces of furniture. Surface Tiles in Battersea offers a brilliant range and service as does Bowloom Carpets, also in Battersea. For unusual pieces of furniture without the Chelsea price tag, I love Rosebery’s in West Norwood, which holds antiques auctions every month. The Process Once I had the brief finalised, the next step was to put together the mood-boards. As this was a large project I did one (or two) for each room so that the clients could see how it would look. Once approved, I surveyed the space and drew up the plans which showed where all the furniture would sit, lighting arrangements and any new carpentry we were building. We repainted the whole house and built in all the new fixed furniture. The next step was to source all the other furniture and fittings, which was a huge job and involved a lot of spreadsheets. These clients also had some pieces that we had to work into the scheme such as some beautiful mango-wood chairs that they had bought on a trip to Sri Lanka. Finally I tackled the fun part of dressing the house, buying flowers, accessories and candles and editing the client’s own collections to ensure that they displayed everything at its best.

Original features add to the character of any interior, be it traditional or very modern. My favourite style is classic and contemporary, but with an eclectic edge

The Challenges These clients were great to work with, but there are always challenges with suppliers and items becoming out of stock or being delivered damaged. Stock issues were our main bugbear as we had set our hearts on some pieces that were unavailable for several months so we had to decide whether to wait for them or not. We made a few compromises but waited for some others such as the bone-inlaid chests from Jaipur in India, which are in - 27 -

the dressing room and are probably my favourite items. We put them against a very dark paint, and they are a beautiful feature. Suzann’s Home My own home and the majority of those that I work on are Victorian so I am becoming very used to the quirks of these old homes and actually embrace them. I always strive to play up any features already in the house, such as fireplaces, picture rails and cornices and often restore or replace them. These original features add to the character of any interior, be it traditional or very modern, making it feel very eclectic. My favourite style is classic and contemporary, but with an eclectic edge. I prefer neutral interiors as I feel that these are the easiest backdrop for creating a really beautiful and personal home. n

1.5 year todd ler constant temper tantrums Hello, I have an 18-month-old boy and recently his one or two tantrums a day have become tantrums every minute – literally anything makes him cry and scream. I am constantly overthinking what is wrong with him or me. He is a difficult sleeper, wakes up very early and cries around 5am every morning and sometimes I can settle him back to sleep, but some days he is wide awake. I’m trying to put him to bed again at 10am, just for a little nap, but he will not go. Has anyone else experienced similar behaviour? Any recommendations for a caterer to help wit h a BBQ?

Tue Apr 16, 2013 11:10 am

I am looking to host a BBQ at my house in the summer for approximately 30 people and I’m looking for a BBQ chef or someone who can prepare a hog roast? Any recommendations?

Poor you, how completely exhausting. It does sound like his behaviour is linked to complete over-tiredness. I think the advice for morning naps is to try putting them down for a sleep about two hours after they have woken up (so roughly around 7-7.30am if he has been up since 5am). Are you in a position to take him for a long walk in the buggy at some point during the morning? Even if he does not sleep, it is a chance for him (and you) to switch off for a bit and relax. Hope you are able to work something out. Good luck!!

Re: Can anyone recommend a caterer to help with summer BBQ? Tue Apr 16, 2013 10:54 am What sort of food are you looking for? I know an Iranian chef who has got a restaurant in London. It’s excellent and the prices are reasonable. They do different types of kebab (chicken, lamb, beef and so on...) They do lots of events in London and are very nice people. Tue Apr 16, 2013 11:08 am I’ve been to a BBQ event catered by Blistering Events (blistering.co.uk/privateparties.html) and it was very impressive.

THE CLASSROOM Lulu Rumsey goes back to school to learn how Broomwood Hall shapes young minds

Broomwood Hall ‘To do your best to be your best’ is the motto at Broomwood Hall, as espoused by its principal Katharine Colquhoun, who founded the school in 1984. On the surface of it, it might seem difficult to fathom a close school community spirit from locations scattered across Wandsworth. However, Broomwood Hall has defied such expectations, physically creating a labyrinth-like campus to connect its various SW12 locations and which includes plenty of green outdoor space, and conceptually fostering a warmly inviting atmosphere that enables all students to immediately feel at home. The co-educational Lower School has two Wandsworth locations, one at the former vicarage on Ramsden Road and another facing Tooting Bec Common on Garrad’s Road. Across a school day that runs from 8.20am to 3.30pm, the Lower School hopes to instil within pupils the building blocks of education: reading, writing, mathematics, science and ICT. At age eight, boys depart the school, generally for Northcote Lodge, where they have priority of entry. Girls progress automatically to Broomwood Hall’s Upper School, where they continue their studies under the guiding headship of Carole Jenkinson. The 220 girls take on a curriculum that prepares them for both 11+ and 13+ entry exams and delivers a balanced and varied range of subjects within supportive, small classes. Literature is prized by Lady Colquhoun, and all girls enjoy weekly classes with her in the Upper School’s richly stocked library. Extra-curricular activities carry much importance, with weekly art classes and music lessons that enable frequent opportunities for the girls to perform. Drama is also an important element of each girl’s time at Broomwood, with statistics proudly showing that by the end of their time there each girl will have taken part in 18 productions. By the time she leaves, every girl is prepared for life after Broomwood, with many opting for public boarding schools and others joining some of London’s most prestigious day schools. n

PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT We chart all of south west London’s regeneration developments – from the ground up

AWARD-WINNING REGENERATION Planning magazine has announced its top 100 regeneration projects in the UK, and Nine Elms on the South Bank was placed in pole position at number one. The area, benefiting from £12 billion of investment, aims to create 16,000 new homes and 25,000 new jobs and makes up more than seven per cent of the UK figure for new development. Helen Fisher, Programme Director of Nine Elms on the South Bank, commented: ‘This is a great achievement for Nine Elms... as it demonstrates the extent of the work planned and shows the industry that we are open for business. Development is well under way, but it is a long-term project and we hope to remain in the listings for many years to come.’

PLAYTIME Children in Battersea and Wandsworth will soon benefit from new play facilities as the council will be designating half a million pounds to create indoor and outdoor spaces to inspire young minds. New play equipment is being installed as part of a £200,000 scheme at Battersea Park. The play centre will become a venue for activities such as dance and drama classes, singing and music tuition and clown and circus-trick workshops. The section of the building that currently houses the One O’clock Club could be transformed into a family-friendly café with an outdoor play area for toddlers. The council is also considering installing climbing walls and an aerial walkway or ‘tree walk’ facility at the playground. These additions would be under the supervision of properly trained adults. - 32 -

The entrants for the RIBA and the Landscape Institute’s design competition were required to take inspiration from the ‘everyday experiences that our city provides,’ creating a clear and dynamic visual message to visitors, employees and residents of the area. The winners were recently announced with two of the four successful entrants hailing from London (Erect Architecture with J&L Gibbons from London (VX90); Cedric Chausse and Charlotte Portier from London (VX107). The winning teams now have a month to expand their initial ideas in line with the GLA Green Infrastructure Audit before presenting to the judging panel. A final winner will then be chosen to work with the Vauxhall One team on the five-year programme of work.

PROPERTY WATCH Experts share their invaluable local knowledge and shine a light on local developments and property news

At the heart of local property Phi li p B ullman

Can you tell us a bit about Bullman Booth? Philip Bullman, Head of Bullman Booth: The agency was created from a management buy-out in 1989. I was an Area Manager for Ellis & Co with five offices in south west London, at that time it was the largest independent agent in the capital. Bullman Booth focused on sales letting and management from the start. Our aim was not to be the biggest, but to be the best.

How long has the agency been working in the Battersea area? We have operated in the Battersea area for over 24 years and I have loved every moment. So much has changed, this place is always on the move. How have you seen the area change since you have been based there? The area is almost unrecognisable since I arrived in 1987. The Clapham Junction main entrance was only just being built. St Johns Hill was regarded by the Lavender Hill mob as the poor end of town, and the riverside was only a twinkle in developers’ eyes. Battersea Reach was also occupied by protesters wanting to prevent any development on the old Guinness site. In terms of specialist knowledge, what is required to work in this market? The market place is forever changing; supply and demand can change in weeks, even days. In the late 80s crash, prices remained relatively stable. There were lots of 100 per cent mortgages, yet we saw very few repossessions. Over the past ten years, however, the market has been more predictable, even with the banking crash. If you watch the market as closely as I do every day, you see stock building up in certain sectors. Over pricing will always stifle a market and a shortage of stock will always tempt some agents to go a step too far. There are a number of useful tools the public can access to get a clear view of what the market is doing, Zoopla.co.uk and Nethouseprices.com both use land register information. Have you noticed any particular trends in terms of what people are doing with their properties? This year we have had a large number of people approach us wanting to turn their flats into buy-to-let vehicles. I think people are more and more mindful of the performance of pensions, or the lack of performance. Bricks and mortar will and always will be a solid investment.

What do you think about current property prices in the area? I believe Battersea still represents good value. Capital growth has always been steady, having seen the average price of one-bed properties rise from £65,000 (in the late 80s), to £340,000 now. I remember reading a shocking article in The Evening Standard about three-bed houses in Battersea topping the £250,000 mark in the 80s – nothing now surprises me. The first house I bought in Wandsworth was an un-modernised four-storey building in Geraldine Road. I paid £145,000 in 2002 and when I moved to an un-modernised house in Melody Road (paying £500,000 having spent £200,000 on it), I then sold the first house in 2007 for £1.4 million. The popularity of the area and a little help from inflation has made many Wandsworth residents happy people. Why do you think people are drawn to this area and what makes it special? Battersea is a very unique place; its development, to a large extent, due to Clapham Junction Station. We recently sponsored the 150-year celebrations of the station. The ease of communication, both in and out of London, along with the fact this is the last zone-two station, has created a honeypot of activity. Over the next few years, Battersea will also see some of the most significant regeneration since the Victorian period. We all know about Battersea Power Station, but there are also a large number of exciting developments in Nine Elms. The St James Riverlight development will be one of the first to rise from the ground, and The Ram Brewery in Wandsworth Town, to name but a few. How does Bullman Booth differ from other agents? Over the past nine months, the staff and I at Bullman Booth have been looking at the business very closely, identifying what our clients and applicants really want from an agency. As a result of our extensive research we have enhanced all of our services, but more importantly we have identified the need to just be there for people planning their future, well before they start thinking about valuations. We offer a chat over the kitchen table, you might say, a helping hand and a good sounding board. We genuinely are able to give a consistent personal service, and we are more than happy for people to come to our office for advice, a chat and a cup of coffee – in fact, we actively encourage it. Someone asked me the other day: ‘what is your unique selling point?’ My answer was as follows: ‘It’s the way our clients and applicants feel about us after the deal is done,’ that’s what sets us apart. In addition to this we have re-branded and re-positioned the company, created a new very functional website and have given our office a makeover to reflect the new offering. I love this area and know so many people; it’s nice to bump into the friendly faces of shopkeepers and residents and to catch up on local tales. It is also nice to put something back into the community. This is why, as part of our social responsibility, we are supporting the Trinity Hospice at Clapham Common. From May, every new instruction we receive we are donating £50 towards this worthy charity. n For more information, telephone: 020 7924 1469 (bullmanbooth.co.uk)

Battersea focus Mayow Short, Head of Savills Battersea, reveals that the property market in south west London is going from strength to strength

An exceptionally wide end-of-terrace property located on this popular residential road within minutes of Battersea Park. Alexandra Avenue, £2.495 million. On the market with Savills Battersea: 020 3402 1900 - 35 -

attersea is one of London’s most popular and desirable places to live. This is due to the 200 acres of beautiful Battersea Park, the river and close links with Chelsea and the amenities of the King’s Road, via the iconic Grade II-listed bridges, Chelsea Bridge and Albert Bridge. There are several sought-after living styles in the area, from modern lateral flats to houses over several storeys. Period mansion flats and houses run along Albert Bridge Road and Prince of Wales Drive, which overlook the park itself. These range from 500 to 5000 sq. feet and are now achieving between £900 and £1,300 per sq. ft. Running off these roads, on streets such as Brynmaer Road, Kersley Street and Alexandra Avenue, the Victorian houses generally start at around 2,000 sq. ft. and regularly achieve circa £1,000 per sq. ft. when in good condition. Along the river there are several high-end and world-recognised developments, including The Montevetro, Waterside Point and Albion Riverside, examples of which we currently have for sale ranging from £2.4 million to a penthouse at £18 million. There are also popular houses and cottages in other areas of Battersea, known as ‘the Shaftesbury Estate,’ ‘Little India’ and ‘The Sisters.’ Prices vary in these areas, starting at £550,000 to in excess of £1m. Battersea is constantly in the press at the moment due to the incredible rejuvenation east of the park. This includes the development of Embassy Gardens, alongside the American Embassy and one of London’s historic landmarks, Battersea Power Station, which has encouraged and increased international investment locally. This has only added gravitas to the area with the imminent building of a tube link in to ‘The City’ and strengthening local infrastructure. This will include boulevards providing high-end shops, bars, cinemas, swimming pools and restaurants for the local cosmopolitan community. Battersea, like many of the prime spots in London, is made up of residents of all nationalities, from Europe to America, Russia to the Middle East and Asia. Many of whom choose to move their family here for the park itself and the strong local schools, such as Thomas’s and Parkgate, as well as several other private and international schools in the surrounding area and Chelsea. Battersea continues to register strong growth and is one of London’s prime property hotspots. This will only be intensified when the ongoing developments are completed. n

RESIDENTS’ JOURNAL

Escape to the country

Swiftly acknowledging recent trends, which show a steadily rising consensus of city dwellers moving towards country living, Hamptons has covered the market, with a presentation of homes available both to buy and rent. To guide those erring on the side of confusion at the prospect of such a drastic change of address, property-related advisers such as mortgage specialists from Capital Private Finance will be on hand for any financial queries. Parents will also be pleased to note that education representatives from key ‘outmigration areas’ will be around to offer valuable advice about schooling and the all-important catchment areas. Marc Goldberg, Head of Sales at Hamptons International, says: ‘This year, all eyes have been on the commuter belt as more and more Londoners look to get more bang for their buck outside of the capital. The Country Living Roadshow is a fantastic one-stop shop to get a flavour for sales and rental properties available in the country without having to give up too much time.’ He adds: ‘Schools are one of the main reasons why families decide to leave London. As part of The Country Living Roadshow we will have education specialists on hand to provide advice on schools and the admissions process in popular areas of the country.’ Of course, securing a country pad is only half of the matter: perfecting the interior is just as crucial to successful country living. To address these concerns, the Roadshow will be held in association with the cornerstone of interior design, esteemed paint and wallpaper brand Farrow & Ball. Representatives from the brand will be available to offer tips and advice on the interior decoration of country homes. Imbued with knowledge about traditional country living interiors trends, they can address any colour palette concerns. Sarah Cole, Farrow & Ball Director, says: ‘We are delighted to be supporting the first Hamptons Country Living event, it’s a great chance for us to introduce Farrow & Ball to Hamptons customers. Our colour consultants will be on hand throughout the day to offer colour advice and suggest decorating schemes to prospective homeowners.’ n

May marks the month when Hamptons hits the road, so to speak, with the launch of its Country Living Roadshow at branches across London

The Country Living Roadshow will take place in Hamptons International’s Battersea branch,98-100 Northcote Road, London SW11 6QW at 2pm till 7pm on Thursday 16 May. Admission is free and light refreshments will be provided.

Hamptons’ Islington, Fulham and Battersea branches will all be giving Londoners an insight into greener pastures new, by showcasing an array of homes located away from the capital’s concrete confines, in the fresh expanses of the countryside.

Spring sponsorship Knight Frank Clapham & Wandsworth was delighted to sponsor a Spring Ladies Lunch to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The lunch was held at Vito’s Italian restaurant on Northcote Road, SW11. The hardworking committee worked wonders with a raffle and auction offering amazing prizes, including a garden design by the talented Caroline Garland. The Teenage Cancer Trust vision is a future where young people’s lives don’t stop because they have cancer. They ensure patients are treated as young people first, cancer patients second and everything they do aims to improve the quality of life and chances of survival. The total raised was a staggering £11,000, this money will be dedicated to refurbishing the family room at the Royal Marsden Hospital Sutton, a haven where the young patients and their families can relax and unwind; a vital part of their wellbeing and recovery. Knight Frank Clapham & Wandsworth offered a portion of their fee to be donated to the charity for those attending the lunch who sell through Knight Frank. On-going support for The Teenage Cancer Trust has been extended to readers who mention this offer at the point of contact. Knight Frank Clapham & Wandsworth, 020 8682 7777

Success, breeds success, breeds satisfied clients since 1989 Mr Paul W I've been using Bullman Booth since 1998, I have had close to zero vacancy in this period and this round was no exception. Great results, great service. Miss Victoria P I purchased in a very tight timescale. Bullman Booth pulled out all the stops to ensure we exchanged and completed in good time. Clear communication skills, a very smooth transaction, excellent service!

Mrs D’Amalio USA The staff at Bullman Booth have an intimate knowledge of the area, and I would not hesitate to recommend them - and have done so. Any future tenants or buyers out there will be well served by this well recognized local Estate Agent.
