Dear Resident, We are celebrating communities in this issue and the people who are making a difference to their locale. During the course of compiling this issue, one interviewee said to me that London is just a series of lots of little villages, and I couldn’t agree more. I had the pleasure of meeting with Clapham Omnibus, which is based in the old library building on Northside, and heard all of the plans for this exciting, community-focused arts venue (p. 7). The borough of Lambeth may be made up of lots of little villages, but Clapham Omnibus seeks to draw them all together with its big ideas. Clapham Common Proms anyone? We have also announced how to vote for our charity donations within the pages of this issue. Turn to page 10 to find out how you can make a significant donation to a local charity. Meanwhile, Louise Hart met the glowingly beautiful ladies of bath and skincare brand Balance Me (p. 21) – Sian, Claire and Rebecca know a thing or two about what our skin needs, without relying on all the nasties and chemicals as the brand is entirely natural. The Journal also chats to Linear Tiles run by locals Peter Burke and Stan Oled.., who are firmly embedded within their locale (p. 17). We find out how they are planning to turn retail on its head.

Dinner dance More than 350 guests will congregate on 30 November at the Westminster Plaza Hotel to celebrate the past year’s successes for Covent Garden Market at its annual dinner dance. Last year’s event saw more than £40,000 raised for charity and the year before that a whopping £65,000 was raised for Trinity Hospice and the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust. ‘The Market will have been at its current location for 40 years in November 2014, so this will be a momentous year,’ says Covent Garden Tenants Association chairman Gary Marshall. ‘We’re already planning a series of events to mark the anniversary next year.’

Augustine Cuisine Previously head chef at Covent Garden’s Mon Plaisir, Franck Raymond’s new French bistro on Battersea Bridge Road is named after his grandmother Augustine. The restaurant showcases authentic French tapas-style dishes, focusing on produce from the Evian region where Raymond was born. The 60-cover restaurant has an intimate family feel with a focus on quality produce and excellent wine – music to our ears.

Update: The future of Clapham Common Last month, Melanie Oxley, the Friends of Clapham Common chairman, spoke at an important meeting about the proposed new management model for the effective running of Clapham Common. Local residents, councillors and members debated questions of finance and resources for the new plan. ‘One clear message from Lambeth [Council] was that it would be unlikely that Clapham Common would be allowed to use the income from its events to help pave the way,’ says Melanie. ‘Since this was seen as revenue for other statutory obligations across the borough, such as some social services.’

WANDSWORTH

On your bike A new scheme to introduce docking stations in Wandsworth is due to launch next month which aims to encourage people to hire bicycles as a method of transport around London. These new docking stations are also longer than the average length in comparison to those already positioned in central London, whilst yellow and red lines have been utilised where possible. The scheme’s objective is to control traffic in the Wandsworth area and it is hoped that visitors are attracted in a way that minimises their impact on the town centre infrastructure.

The council’s education chiefs have named educational trust Floreat as its choice of academy provider to run Earlsfield Primary School, which is due to be built on the side of the Atheldene Centre, fronting Garratt Lane in 2014. Floreat proposes to concentrate on the ‘four ‘Cs’ – core skills (literacy and numeracy), cultural knowledge, curiosity and character,’ and says it will promote these attributes in partnership with the charity Adventure Learning Schools, through links with Wellington College and outdoor activities. The choice of provider must now be endorsed by the Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove, who will make the final decision and, if approved, the school will be opened in September 2015 and will admit 60 children a year, eventually providing places for up to 420 pupils.

T

he old Clapham Library is having an Alice in Wonderland moment. If you amble down to the Northside, the more observant of you might be surprised to notice a door in the tree outside the red brick building, known for its elegant arched windows. Through the Door was created by artist Brian McClure and photographer Marc Neumann and this tiny symbol represents the very beginning of an engaging, not to mention inclusive, arts programme that has just begun in the borough. It has not been an easy journey, to say the least, but

thanks to the dedication of a select committee, the support of Lambeth Council and the time and money donated by the local community, the old library has been given a new lease of life and purpose. We are on the cusp of a very exciting arts revolution; so welcome Clapham Omnibus. ‘I would really like to see this building alive with creativity,’ enthuses its new artistic director Marie McCarthy. I am sitting with the lady herself and the chair of trustees George Owen in the large, light-filled room upstairs, next to a boudoir piano, kindly donated

by a Mr Colin Clarke. This new arts centre, the only one of its kind in the borough of Lambeth, George tells me, will be open every day from 11am, and Marie and the general manager Juliette Stark will be based on site. Visitors will be able to have a tour of the building in its newest incarnation and buy tickets for the various performances, exhibitions and activities. The building consists of a large 90-seater theatre and adjoining gallery space, a café/bar and office facilities, as well as an upstairs concert room. ‘Eventually, Omnibus will offer a programme of activities seven days a week, for people connecting with each other and with the art, whatever form that art takes,’ continues Marie, former artistic director of The Lightning Ensemble Theatre Company. ‘There are four strands to the work we want to do here: to programme high quality theatre, classical and contemporary music and visual art; deliver creative learning and community engagement programmes; provide an inspiring space for people to experience and create an artistic hub to exchange ideas and test early stage work. 2014 sees the start of the Omnibus Youth Theatre and family events, and a rolling programme of monthly comedy, film and acoustic nights. We will also be introducing jazz on alternative Sunday evenings.’ Considering the stories I have heard from both George and Marie, I don’t think they will have a problem getting people over the threshold; the local community is already really eager to see what is going on with the old library. ‘We had some young people come by the other day who used to use this space when it was a library. They wanted to find out what was happening and now they are exhibiting their art downstairs,’ explains George, an opera singer who has lived in Clapham for more than 20 years. Common, Clapham Omnibus has big ideas (its plan for a Proms on the Common next summer is most intriguing), but I have heard that the journey to arrive at this point was not a smooth one. I push George for details. ‘It all started, believe it or not, seven years ago,’ he begins, ‘when Lambeth Council decided to build a new library on the High Street and open a leisure centre nearby as well. This work made the building in which we are sitting today surplus to requirement, so there was some suggestion they sell it off.’ Considering that the building has been open to the community as a public library for more than a century, it is safe to say that this news ruffled a few feathers. ‘Indeed,’ George acknowledges this fact. ‘A few residents, including myself, decided that this would be a bad idea, so we set up a committee and I became the chairman of the group.’ The fear was that such a valuable building in such a prime location right next to the Common would easily be sold off to a developer and transformed into luxury flats – lost to the community forever. ‘So Lambeth was going to give us the building at first as an asset transfer, and that was how we progressed for quite a long time,’ he tells me. Unfortunately, the journey had a few unexpected hiccups. The committee of dedicated trustees (including designer Tim Gosling, communications executive Stephen Boyo, fundraiser Jo Hopkins, accountant Michael Rolfe, marketing executive Alec Jessel, stage manager and member of the Clapham Society Andrew Lorant and marketing manager at the Southbank Centre Nick Miller) could not actually work on the building itself as it was still in use as a library, until last year when the new library site was completed. ‘Due to the financial crash of 2009, the council suddenly told us that they couldn’t give us the building because it was too valuable and they needed to sell it,’ George explains.

admitting that many new recruits were found in that most amiable of recruitment centres: the pub. ‘It is a bit of a joke really, when we have meetings to introduce new people and I do the introductions, people always seem to start off with “Well, I met George in the Prince of Wales,” or “Well, I met George in The Rose and Crown.”’ A whole string of local celebrities are also behind Clapham Omnibus, with actress Miriam Margolyes hosting a sell-out Dickens evening to raise funds for the building and author John O’Farrell and comedians Mark Thomas and Arthur Smith also popping down to show their support. Clapham’s old library has been handed a new lease of life; expect sweet music wafting from its galleries, organised by music associate and regular guest with the English National Opera and London Symphony Orchestra Sue Dorey; plus fine art hanging on its walls and puppets peeping from windows. Far from being an elitist centre, this venture seeks to serve the community and to reach out to all of its inhabitants. The first concert to kickstart Clapham Omnibus’ winter season will be the Bernadel String Quartet on 3 November, and from here performances of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck and a screening of Tony Britten’s documentary focusing on the life of composer Benjamin Britten will be presented. ‘This is such a unique building and it has really inspired me,’ enthuses Marie. ‘It has a phenomenal atmosphere – people just come in and say “Wow”. I have a feeling that will still be happening hundreds of years from now.’ n

Thankfully, the group refused to go down quietly and had a stab at raising the money to put in their own bid and, miraculously, they managed to win, setting the wheels in motion for this communitydriven venture. George is thankful for the support of the council, which could easily have opted to sell the building to a large developer: ‘They chose us, the community group, and remained true to their cooperative council credentials.’ Opened in 1889, the Clapham Library sprung into being at a time when lending and reference libraries were becoming increasingly popular. There had been ‘intense local argument’ about the site for this library, explains Peter Jefferson Smith of The Clapham Society, which has researched the subject in depth. Eventually, the commissioners settled on the picturesque setting on the north side of the Common, opposite the parish church. As in the early days when local thought was divided as to Clapham Library’s location, there was no less furore when the council expressed its thoughts about selling the building. George and his committee managed to raise £120,000, with many local people chipping in. ‘I remember one chap asked me to meet him in the pub as he was interested in finding out more about the campaign. We met and chatted and I walked away with a cheque for £20,000. There weren’t all such high amounts but we had donations of everything from £10,000 to £50,’ he smiles. Clapham Omnibus received the keys to its long-prized building at the end of December 2012 and started work in February. ‘We stripped everything out,’ says George. ‘And then we started putting things back together. Of course, lots of it was done by volunteers from the community, who have been such a great support.’ Local networks are still strong, with George

Residents’ Journal

Charitable Donations Dear resident, As you may be aware, a small mistake at our suppliers resulted in the incorrect wording being foiled onto the July front cover of the Residents’ Journal. The writing on the front of the cover, ‘Written for the residents of’ is normally followed by the correct wording: ‘Battersea, Balham, Clapham and Wandsworth’ in silver foil. However, in July, the silver foil read: ‘Written for residents by residents.’ The normal course of action would be to reprint the covers quickly and as the fault did not lie with us, we would not be out of pocket. Instead, our publisher felt compelled to consider alternative options that would spare the environment the additional burden of wasted covers. Our mission has and will always be to produce magazines of the highest quality that add to our communities, rather than to our recycling bins. In conjunction with our supplier, we decided to donate the money that would have been spent on reprinting covers to local charities and asked you to suggest some of your favourites. We have five lots of £500 to give away and would like you to vote for the charity that you think deserves a cheque. The nominees are all listed on this page so please take a look and email bbcw@residentsjournal.co.uk before 6pm on 10 December. The five organisations with the most votes by this deadline will receive a cheque for £500. Happy voting!

ALL MY SONS

COATS AND COLLARS BALL

A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM

An amateur production of Arthur Miller’s play All My Sons comes to Balham this month. The ethics of profiteering and family ties rise to the surface in this powerful drama based on a true story. Set over a 24 hour period, the fast paced action begins and ends in a back garden in a small town somewhere in Ohio. Southside Players, who have been bringing drama to the doorsteps of Balham and Clapham for several years, will be taking to the stage at the Chestnut Grove Theatre for the performance.

The red carpet has been rolled out in preparation for some very special guests to strut their four-legged stuff, which can only mean one thing: the Battersea Dogs and Cats homes annual Coats and Collars Ball has arrived. Held at Evolution in Battersea Park, hosts Paul O’Grady and Amanda Holden invite guests to the glamourous fundraising event where the home’s animals will take centre stage this year for some vintage Hollywood magic.

Don’t miss the Clapham Chamber Concerts production of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which comes to St Paul’s Church for one night only this month. The semi-staged musical version of the play will transport audiences deep into enchanted woodland for Shakespeare’s famous comedy of love and trickery. Accompanied by voice and piano, the original play has been reimagined to lively and captivating effect.

Tables must be pre booked by calling 020 7627 9309. Tables cost £3,500-£5,000 for 10 guests and £10,000 for 14 guests (collarsandcoats.org.uk)

We often look back to move forward and what better year to focus on than 1963: a year punctuated with significant moments of social change. It was the year in which Martin Luther King told Washington ‘I have a dream’; in America Bob Dylan was the poster boy for the revolution, penning songs that would become the soundtrack to the Civil Rights movement; Beatlemania was taking hold in the UK and Mick Jagger and Keith Richards cut their first record as The Rolling Stones. Proud Chelsea’s 1963: The Year of Revolution charts this exciting Youthquake movement with images of these fine figures just on the cusp of greatness. Shot by acclaimed photographers such as Brian Duffy, Terry O’Neill and Eric Swayne, among others, the exhibition celebrates the release of a book of the same title by Robin Morgan and Ariel Leve.

The Museum of London’s latest exhibition The Cheapside Hoard: London’s Lost Jewels, allows you to step into the shoes of the men who did, in 1912, under a cellar floor in Cheapside. ‘The Cheapside Hoard is quite literally a time capsule,’ says curator Hazel Forsyth, who has painstakingly compiled this cache. Katie Randall meets Linear Tiles, the business about to change the landscape of retail in south west London

P

icture this: a master chef strides across a sleek kitchen – a skillfully crafted cocoon of porcelain. Balhamites wander around the space, dedicating attention to both the culinary expert, the quirky art works on the walls and a band performing in another alcove. You might imagine that I am referring to an exciting new arts venue. In fact, this space is Balham’s newest kitchen, bathroom and tile studio Linear Tiles. The culmination of years of hard work, founder Peter Burke and his partners Stan Olendzki and Francis Adesina have swung open the doors to their business on Zennor Road and are set to transform the landscape of retail for good. If their names appear familiar, it might be because you have encountered these chaps down at a Battersea Ironsides rugby game, spreading community spirit. Stan, an accountant and marketing executive for Linear Tiles by day, coaches the under 13s and Peter, a former foreign exchange trader in the city, has well and truly embedded himself in club life, assisting on the trips away and at matches. ‘Thanks to the very social nature of the Battersea Ironsides, we all got to know each other, says Peter. It seems a trait of south west London, that everyone knows everyone; a fact that Peter knows only too well. ‘Balham is the biggest village in the world,’ he laughs. ‘Never mind six degrees of separation, there must be about two here.’ He tells me that Susan Hanage, a Residents’ Journal contributor and founder of Nappy Valley Net is a family friend, her son having trained with the Ironsides for years. If you cannot walk down the street without seeing someone that you know in Balham, no wonder Peter and his team felt the pressure when launching their business. It would have to add to the community, not drain it. ‘There are so many boring, cluttered tile shops in the capital but Linear Tiles is different,’ he explains. ‘We provide a luxury one stop shop for bathroom, kitchens and tiles.’ At this point Stan explains the key mantra for the business: ‘German kitchens, Italian tiles.’ Upon perusing the 5,000 sq. ft. studio space, tastefully decked out with beautiful slabs of porcelain tile and barely a grouting line in sight, I can’t help but admire the modern aesthetic. Linear Tiles work with large format, lightweight tiles. ‘The use of porcelain allows us to create completely bespoke designs for

apartments as well as houses,’ says Peter. ‘Previously, to use a calico stone you would have to reinforce the floors or else the heavy stonework would come crashing through the floors.’ The fact that this creative studio and tile library perfectly presents practical, everyday art (Alno kitchens, Linear’s porcelain tiles and Siemens and Miele appliances) inspired Peter and Stan to take their open-door policy one step further. ‘We want lots of energy about the place and will constantly have things going on, including inviting culinary establishments down to use the kitchens here during events,’ says Peter. The first event on 28 and 29 November will feature the work of a popular artist who lives in Gypsy Hill. ‘We are fortunate enough to work with Alno, who design kitchens of the highest quality and are the second largest kitchen manufacturers in the world,’ Peter enthuses. ‘We work with the best brands and want to team up with restaurants which serve the best food in London.’ Whether luxury tiles or rugby float your boat, Peter and Stan are keen to invite people down to both the showroom and to a Battersea Ironsides game. Stan explains that they are the biggest Rugby and Football Union-registered minis club in the country. ‘We’ve also got a thriving girls team and never turn kids away,’ says Peter. I can’t help thinking that if the same zeal that has helped the under 13 age group of Ironsides settle into a top four position in Surrey also applies to Linear Tiles, then it is destined to be a great success. n

Linear Tiles is open from 7.30am-4.30pm. Unit 5, Zennor Trade Park, Zennor Road, SW12 0PS (lineartiles.co.uk; ironsidesrugby.com) - 17 -

Kitchen Aid The Residents’ Journal sends out a kitchen S.O.S. and Micaela Philippo of Wandsworth-based The Recipe Kit answers. We learn more about this fantastic new fresh-food delivery service

Micaela Philippo

George Kazarian

Can you tell us how the idea for The Recipe Kit came about? The original idea to set up The Recipe Kit came from George Kazarian, who was frustrated that after a long, hard day at work, he would return to a bare kitchen and would end up ordering a cheeky takeaway or knocking together something quite basic. As someone who loved good food but didn’t have the culinary skills nor the time to source the ingredients for interesting dinners, he decided to start a business that would solve his problem. He then met Olia Hercules, a trained chef, and myself, a food branding consultant, and we all combined our experience to create an innovative service driven by the desire to provide people with the resources to cook better and more adventurously at home. And what do you prefer, home cooking or eating out? I prefer dining out, probably because I have worked on the setting up and management of restaurants, so dining out is always a thoroughly engaging experience for me. One of the main reasons I am excited about launching The Recipe Kit is because home cooking makes me so flustered. Using a kit removes all of the usual stresses. You receive interesting, exotic ingredients, delivered to your door in the exact measurements that you need to make the dish and with an illustrated recipe card for you to follow. It is restaurant-standard food but with the sense of accomplishment of a great homecooked meal.

What is one of your favourite meals from The Recipe Kit menu? Olia recreated a dish from her childhood,

called poussin tabaka. It is a spatchcocked small chicken that is traditionally pressed onto a grill with bricks. To make it at home, it is flattened with a stack (a frying pan and a stone mortar). The process was fun and I was thrilled to have cooked something that was unfamiliar with an unfamiliar technique. Do you believe that everyone can cook? Yes, everyone can cook. I think many of us just become intimidated, lazy or live a spontaneous and hectic lifestyle where cooking appears a chore and an inconvenience. The Recipe Kit assumes people are novices in the kitchen and the method is written out step-by-step, with photos to help you along. There are chef’s tips and anything that could be considered a little more complicated is supplemented with an explanatory blog post on our website – knife skills, for example. Which culinary geniuses inspire you? I have a bias toward female chefs, because I believe it is far more difficult for them to get recognised in the industry. Restaurant kitchens are hot, airless and full of aggressive men! Anna Hansen is quite amazing – the menu at The Modern Pantry always has really interesting ingredients but the food is wholesome and unpretentious. Also Lily Vanilli, who is the most amazing baker. Which local chefs and restaurants in Wandsworth inspire you? The Ship does an excellent burger and is dedicated to using British produce. There is also a great Thai on Garratt Lane called The Thai Grocer. It is small and discreet but they use premium quality ingredients to produce authentic Thai food. They also sell hard-tofind Thai pantry items, which is great for us. It is also very reasonably priced. Why is it important to buy locally produced raw ingredients for cooking? Fortunately it is much easier to buy British produce in supermarkets now as many companies realise that customers don’t want a trolley containing supposedly ‘fresh’ ingredients that were picked from the ground a week ago on the other side of the world. We are committed to using a fruit and vegetable supplier that sources from farms in Kent (Fresher By Miles) and finding the more obscure and exotic ingredients, such as Thai ginger, herbs and spices from the local ethnic supermarkets. Do you all travel, and if so, where have you eaten the best food? Our team is very well-travelled. I know Olia was hugely inspired by a trip to rural Thailand to visit her husband’s family (Kao Soi Gai) and she recreated one of the dishes she ate there for The Recipe Kit. Personally, some of the best food I have had was in Pondicherry, India, where there is vibrant fusion food.

The way it works There is a huge French influence with the introduction of butter, olive oil, fresh herbs such as rosemary and citrus fruits. When brainstorming the week’s recipes, we try to cover as much global ground as we can to educate our customers. Have you ever had any kitchen disasters? Olia: Before my first date with my husband Tom, who was the head chef at Ottolenghi where I used to work, I asked him what he would like me to cook. He replied casually that he liked any food that came with rice (he’s Thai). I thought I’d try to be a bit inventive and make a risotto, thinking he might not expect it. It happened to be his least favourite type of food and, beyond that, completely inedible as I made it gloopy like syrup. He ate it out of politeness and later married me, so the recovery was fine! - 19 -

• Choose your meals online and pay • The Recipe Kit box is delivered by a friendly driver • Unpack your ingredients and recipe card (and decide what to make first) • Follow the instructions and get cooking

Who would be your ideal dinner party guests (past and present) at a Recipe Kit dinner party? Clement Freud because he would give a hilarious and dry commentary while cooking, and AA. Gill for his brutal honesty about the food.

HEALTH & FITNESS Three of the best beauty products to use during and post work-out

For traction during exercise Talcum Powder for Feet, £9, Mavala (lookfantastic.com)

The body Personal trainer and wellness coach Jody Shaw sets the pace with a special work out in Battersea Park

‘M

any of my clients enjoy exercising outdoors and find it much more engaging than running on a treadmill in the gym. With this in mind, Battersea Park is a great place in which to train; whether you run on the track, visit the outdoor gym and tennis courts, or use the football pitches and cricket nets. Starting at the Sun Gate, begin a set of walking lunges (use the distance between each lamppost as a guide to the length of your stride and subsequent lunge). Take deep steps to strengthen the quads and hamstrings as well as lifting and firming the glutes. Breathe deeply and then power walk past two sets of lamp posts. Repeat this circuit at least twice. In the newly renovated Winter Gardens, use the circular benches for a circuit of 12 press-ups; 12 tricep dips (strengthening the muscle at the back of your arm, sit on the bench holding the edge of the seat before gently raising your body and then lowering it off the seat; then lift and lower); followed by a 45 second plank on the grass, ensuring shoulder blades are pulled down and that your chest is lifted. Abdominals should be pulled towards the spine to ensure excellent posture and that the arm and core muscles are being worked hard. Repeat this circuit up to three times, resting for 30-45 seconds between circuits.

Next it is time to power walk along the carriageway up towards Albert Gate (not stopping at the Prince Albert pub!) and mentally prepare yourself for some metabolism-raising sprints along the river front. Using the lamp posts as markers, walk for one, jog one and sprint for two. Repeat this along the River Thames until you get to the Peace Pagoda. At the Peace Pagoda, stride up two steps at a time and at the top spend at least five minutes performing an inchworm hamstring stretch around the Buddha (bend over and touch your hands to the floor with your legs straight and slowly walk the hands down into a plank position, then walk the legs up so that you are standing in the initial position). This keeps your legs and back supple, while also working your shoulders, arms and core. Finish off with more walk/jog/sprints along the river, finishing at Chelsea Gate. Then jog gently back along Main Carriage North towards Albert Gate. Find a cherry tree to stretch your back, arms and chest, taking time to breathe deeply and relax. Any of the benches will steady your balance for a final leg and hip stretch before you head out in SW11 to enjoy your day.’ n

Balanced

Louise Hart meets the real-life superwomen who are bringing our skin back into balance

A

ll you need in life for flawless skin and a healthy, gamine glow are two men’s hairbrushes, natural beauty products and a smile; this is beauty à la Balance Me. It is, quite frankly, a beauty revelation that you don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds accumulating a whole arsenal of synthetic lotions and potions to keep your skin in tip-top condition. A few natural products and a handful of clever techniques can, in fact, work wonders. Much like John Lennon, who crooned that ‘All you Need is Love,’ the founders of results-driven skincare brand Balance Me promote the return to natural products which feature no synthetic nasties. I want to be inducted into the brotherhood of natural beauty, and so I am probing sisters Rebecca and Clare Hopkins and their business partner Sian Jones for the insider tricks and advice you won’t find elsewhere. We are meeting in their Southwark-based head office, a central meeting point for the three women who all live in different corners of London (Rebecca is Clapham-based, Sian lives in Greenwich and Clare resides in Stoke Newington). Judging by the radiant complexions of Sian and Clare, who are both sitting opposite me with gleeful smiles,

these mothers are on to something. So my first line of questioning is directed towards the advice that they have gathered over the years. ‘You used to have a mantra, didn’t you?’ Sian jests and looks over at Clare. ‘Oh yes, that’s true,’ comes the laughing response. ‘At about 16 years old, I used to say that you should smile all the time, because it releases happy chemicals. The boys at school used to tease me for it but it did make people laugh!’ says Clare. Sian and I agree; a flash of your pearly whites does endear people. ‘I think I was old before my time,’ jokes Clare. So, smiling: check. Happy chemicals: check. What else is important, I wonder? Clare explains that another of her tips that has stuck with her through adolescence is dry body-brushing. ‘I am 40 now [I noticeably widen my eyes in disbelief] but I remember dry body-brushing in the shower at 16. I just use two men’s hairbrushes and it literally takes minutes. Just brush in small circles up the legs and thighs and then do a little bit softly on your tummy. It helps to improve your circulation and is great for shifting cellulite.’ Sian sighs in response: ‘Clare is slightly masochistic though, you can use a softer normal brush or a sisal mitt!’ Sian’s tips are equally as fascinating, training first in

retail before switching to aromatherapy, this skincare expert believes in the power of a precise form of facial massage to keep the years at bay. ‘I think it is important to note that Balance Me is not about serious anti-ageing with really strong creams and freezing your face in place or shaving off 30 years. We prefer natural methods and ingredients to keep skin healthy, glowing and looking its best,’ she explains. ‘I think the biggest tip that I can give was actually passed on to me by my massage therapist tutor. She taught me about the power of facial rejuvenation through massage. It’s like a mini work-out for the face and you get a flush of nutrients to the surface of the skin and lots of oxygen. All of your skin cells benefit.’ Tips aside, it has taken more than just beauty nous to rise up through the saturated beauty market. Rebecca and Clare founded Balance Me in 2005 after they left their respective PR and business careers behind and retrained in the holistic field in their quest for a better work-life balance. ‘My background is consultancy and stockbroking,’ Clare explains. ‘Rebecca’s is beauty PR, she used to work for L’Oréal. I gave it all up to go travelling and whilst I was away I really got into yoga and trained to be a teacher. I came back to London and we decided to set up an events business because, at this point, Rebecca had retrained to be a reflexologist.’ The pair teamed up, using their business backgrounds to form an events company for two-and-a-half years. ‘We also made natural beauty products in our kitchens as gifts to give out at the events,’ Clare enthuses. ‘I’d make them and test them on myself.’ Thus a brand was born. Offering their massages and pedicures for events at Harvey Nichols and Topshop back in the days when you couldn’t just pop onto the high street for a massage, Balance Me started to carve its path. The first step to launching its own products came via a nudge from Topshop, says Clare. ‘After one of our events, I got a call from the retailer asking to buy our foot polishes for its shoe launch – they wanted 200! At the time we were still making them in our kitchen.’ Within a year, Balance Me products were selling throughout the UK

We have eliminated the harsh chemicals in our products but we still have to assure our customers that we are driven by results

and Sian Jones had joined, bringing her wealth of retail and aromatherapy experience to the brand. Balance Me challenged the conventional method of selling beauty products in department stores, stocking its skincare and body creams in unconventional beauty stockists such as Topshop, Waitrose, Ocado and Whole Foods, as well the conventional John Lewis, Harvey Nichols and Beales. The brand philosophy that has so appealed to consumers, both young and old, is to bring skin back into balance and to do so the trio regularly reach out to their customers to glean feedback and ascertain their needs, whether they are packaging or formulation-related. ‘One of the main selling points for our products is that you can use them on skin of all ages, I use the Rose Body Balm and the Rose Body Wash on my children and I used them throughout pregnancy as well,’ Clare enthuses. ‘That’s why we have not felt the urge to launch a baby line.’ The ingredients within the jars, tubs and bottles may be gentle enough for children, but how effective are they, I enquire? ‘We have eliminated the harsh chemicals in our products but we still have to assure our customers that we are driven by results,’ replies Sian positively. Results speak volumes and the general consumer is - 22 -

nothing if not a perfectionist. I am interested to learn just how these pure ingredients weigh up in the boxing ring against their chemical cousins. Sian steps in to deliver the first punch. ‘Balance Me uses cutting-edge, hi-tech natural formulations and chemistry to create sophisticated textures and award-winning results at affordable prices. We use the finest ingredients and spend time and effort sourcing the very highest grade oils and raw materials. Hyaluronic acid, one of our hero ingredients, binds about a thousand times its weight in water, so is great for plumping the skin and delivering a hit of moisture. The fine grade of the acid we use means that the particles are smaller and thus it can be absorbed into skin more easily.’ Clare adds that: ‘Traditionally anti-ageing was an area that natural brands couldn’t necessarily compare, but that really isn’t the case any more. Our Skin Saviours Facial Expression Filler, Anti-Ageing Skin Serum and a BB cream that we are just about to launch are all hightech, innovative products with which you can plump, tighten and lift your skin effectively, and very few people have reactions to them. This is not always the case with synthetic chemical products.’ Is that a bell I can hear? And the winners are… Balance Me.

Not content with just its own affirmations, Balance Me has gone on to win more than 25 awards since its launch eight years ago, including a coveted Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) UK’s Member Achiever Award, and this is only the beginning of the brand’s journey. With Christmas fast approaching, the trio of mothers are set to launch a selection of beautifully-designed gift sets featuring many of Balance Me’s signature products at affordable prices. ‘We asked lots of people about this time last year what they wanted from their Christmas gifts, and have developed three options. We want them to be accessible to everyone so that we can spread the Balance Me message,’ says Clare. ‘And hopefully some Christmas joy as well,’ chimes Sian. Now that we are on the subject, I begin to ponder what I would most like for Christmas. ‘A Balance Me spa in London, serving up Sian’s specialised facial massages and the air scented with the delicate aromas of the brand’s products; that would do me nicely,’ I declare aloud. Sian and Rebecca aren’t giving anything away but there is a twinkle in their eyes. ‘One day,’ they smile together. n

I wanted to alert everyone to thieves that seem to be stealing cars ‘to order’. Yesterday a white male was door knocking around the Heaver Estate questioning if the cars parked outside ‘belonged’ to the house in the guise that they needed to be moved as a skip was arriving the next day. However, what actually happened was in a two-hour window of being out of the house in the middle of the day, they [the thieves] crow barred the front door and all drawers were ransacked in an attempt to find the car keys. The police have said this isn’t the first case in recent weeks, with Audi’s and BMWs being the main targets.

Battersea boom Mayow Short, Associate Director of Savills Battersea, explains why Battersea is a savvy investment Albert Bridge Road, Battersea, SW11 – Guide Price £6 million

P

roperty is often our greatest asset, so it’s unsurprising we want to ensure it will stand the test of time. We are seeing a rise in savvy people looking to future proof and invest in Battersea – often having observed the area’s progression and wanting to obtain a property here before it becomes unaffordable. We’ve found those looking to retire in five to ten years’ time are buying their ideal downsizer home now, and renting it out in the interim, while similarly parents are purchasing advance property on behalf of their children.

The impressive redevelopment of Nine Elms, including Battersea Power Station and the Embassy Gardens, has boosted interest in the area, raising its profile as a place for outstanding investment opportunity. Battersea has been undervalued for a long time, and while it’s already increasing, there are still exceptional gains to be made by buying now. An extension of the Northern line including two new tube stations will provide a link running directly to the city, improving transport connections. In addition, the introduction of the American Embassy and the creation of new grand boulevards providing contemporary homes, offices and shops, as well as a Cinemas, gyms and spas means Battersea is set to become a thriving cultural and business centre in its own right. Savills ‘In Numbers’ research has found average property prices in Battersea have risen by over 60 per cent since 2008, and are well positioned to maintain their momentum: with a further increase of 25 per cent predicted for five years ahead. Battersea lettings have also seen healthy returns and are similarly forecast a rise of over 25 per cent in the next five years, after growth of nearly five per cent in the past year alone. With substantial returns to be made, this is brilliant news for those looking to let their properties before they or their family members move in.

Sabine Road, Battersea, SW11 – Guide Price £785,000

Although the buzz around Nine Elms has already begun, the entire refurbishment of the area isn’t expected to be completed until 2019. Yet buyers who would previously seek to find a property in Chelsea have already begun to turn their attention across the river. Battersea Park has always been a popular area with applicants, in the UK and internationally, offering beautiful open space in Central London. There are also some outstanding schools in the area including Newton Prep and Thomas’s, which attract a large volume of families. Prime areas include Albert Bridge Road, where we have recently sold two large houses this year, a third currently under offer and an exceptional fourth on the market for £6 million. Areas known locally as ‘The Sisters’, ‘The Shaftesbury Estate’ and ‘Little India’ provide terraced Victorian houses are also highly sought after, with cottages such as a beautifully renovated freehold on Sabine Road from £785,000. Flats in the area start from £450,000 and go all the way up to exceptional and spacious penthouses overlooking the river, such as one in Albion Riverside currently on the market at £18 million. Further impressive mansion flats overlooking Battersea Park command a premium such as on Prince of Wales Drive. n
