Dear Resident, September brings a flurry of activity to the area in the arenas of fashion, food and events, and we are excited to share some of them with you this month. No September issue would be complete without beautiful garments and elegant accessories; we have spoken to a selection of fashion experts for our style sweep of the local area (p.7). One’s idiosyncratic taste in clothing is a means of self-expression and no one understands this more than Jazmine Rocks, a style blogger who lives near Battersea Park. She travels the world for her blog Jazzabelle’s Diary and was looking forward to jetting off to Las Vegas after her interview with us. She talks us through her favourite Battersea shopping haunts, blogging and bargains. The Journal also speaks to Jigsaw’s Product Director Barbara Horspool. Meanwhile, for those less sartorially inclined, Henry Hopwood-Phillips, Kara Wright and Amelia Rosenthal perfect a different kind of craft: food. Henry tries his hand at oyster shucking at SW4’s Cactus Kitchens under the guidance of Chris King, Chef de Cuisine at Roux at the Landau at the Langham London Hotel and protégé of Michel Roux Jr (p.18). Kara and Amelia indulge in a sugar rush at On Café, as they learn to make delectable macarons with the talented pastry chef Loretta Liu (p.19).

BATTERSEA
Baby boom A new baby can bring joy and happiness, but it can also bring serious financial strain that leaves young families looking for the fastest route out of London. After experiencing these struggles first-hand, mums Jenny Syddall and Faye Hamilton-Martin were inspired to set up Baby Jumble, a series of nearly new baby sales where thrifty London parents can pick up clothes and supplies for their newborn at a fraction of the usual price. ‘As babies grow out of things almost as quickly as they grow into them, you end up with piles of almost unused clothes and equipment,’ explains Jenny.
Entrance is £2 per family, with 25 per cent going to local charity Wandsworth Oasis. 7 September, York Gardens Library 34 Lavender Road, SW11 2UG (babyjumble.com)

Going green Battersea Park has been confirmed as one of the best green open spaces in the country after successfully retaining its coveted Green Flag award. Described as ‘the jewel in the crown of London parks’, the award was presented by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. According to the charity’s website, ‘No other park in the capital offers so much to see, do and enjoy. The park also provides a peaceful oasis in central London where visitors can relax, read a book, enjoy a picnic and get away from all the noise and stresses of London life.’ Millions of pounds have been spent on transforming the park since Wandsworth took it over in 1986, turning it into the popular and well-loved space it is today. Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: ‘A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the hard work and dedication of all the park’s managers, staff and volunteers who have helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy.’
Battersea has become a stomping ground for A-list celebrities Gordon Ramsay and Victoria Beckham after both targeted the area to expand their business empires. Gordon Ramsay has confirmed plans to open a new restaurant in Battersea Square, taking over the former site of the Bennett Brasserie and Oyster Bar. The launch date of the new venture, which will be named London House, has not yet been announced. Nearby, Victoria Beckham has purchased her first ever retail space in the area, an 850 square foot spar. The building is within walking distance of her design studio and office HQ in Ransome’s Dock.

CLAPHAM AND BALHAM
Chelsea restaurant comes to Clapham The Honky Tonk bar and restaurant is set to open its second branch in Clapham. Spearheaded by the brains behind Supperclub, the restaurant offers live jazz and soul music alongside American inspired diner food and cocktails from the Bourbon bar.
Clapham Fire Station Saved Clapham fire station has been saved from closure thanks to the support of thousands of residents and hundreds of businesses, who backed a campaign to keep the station running. The risk of closure followed an announcement that the Mayor of London planned to force his Fire Brigade to cut funds through the London Fire Authority. Cllr Jack Hopkins, Lambeth Council’s cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities, said, ‘While I’m delighted that Clapham Fire Station has been saved from closure, I am disappointed that the Mayor has not withdrawn his plan to close 10 London fire stations.’ Lambeth’s meetings about fire station closures were the most attended public meetings in all of London’s boroughs.

Beautiful Balham Balham has been named one of the most sought-after places to live in the country, according to research by a leading firm of estate agents. More buyers are currently looking to find homes in this part of the borough than anywhere else, say Haart. With the growing stature of boutique shops, bars and restaurants in its town centre, a popular street market and a thriving annual comedy festival, the area offers Londoners great value for money. Haart found there were 46 registered buyers for every property in the SW12 postcode, compared with a London-wide average of 19 to one and a national figure of eight to one.
Upgrades continue for Clapham Old Town The £2.5m transformation of Clapham Old Town to a greener, cleaner environment is due to be completed early next year. Improvements will include better cycle facilities, an increase in free short term parking and wider footpaths. Work is already underway in the ‘triangle’ and Old Town east side. -5-

WANDSWORTH
Putting the fun in Wandsworth Park Families can now enjoy a fun-packed round of minigolf in the heart of Wandsworth Park. A new 12 hole Putt In The Park course has been laid out in a newly landscaped area that was previously occupied by a disused bowling green. Found next to the park’s café, the dozen putting greens, some with their own mini-bunkers and water features, offer parents and children a great new leisure activity. The course is open every day from 10am to dusk, with playing charges from £5.
Quit littering Wandsworth Council have been working hard to persuade smokers to quit their habit of dropping cigarette butts on pavements outside rail and tube stations. The waste enforcement team has been regularly visiting stations in the borough and bringing with them a large perspex dustbin that contains all the waste picked up from surrounding streets that day. Smoking related debris now accounts for 90 per cent of the litter on Wandsworth’s streets and picking this up and keeping the borough’s streets clean and tidy is currently costing local council taxpayers just under £4 million a year.

Skater shangri-la The construction of a new £170,000 skate park and BMX bike track off Kimber Road in King George’s Park is set to be completed by the end of the month. The investment is part of a £550,000 refurbishment and improvement programme for playgrounds in the borough. Surroundings such as the vacant adjacent building also have potential. Turning the building into a youth café or a hang-out for professional extreme sports tutors are just some of the options being reviewed.

Style credentials Gleaning inspiration from SW11’s wealth of antique shops and beautiful green spaces, 21-year-old fashion and lifestyle blogger Jazmine Rocks reveals her favourite fashion local haunts How long have you lived in Battersea and what do you love about the area? I’ve lived in Battersea for just over 19 years, in the same little flat just off Battersea Park Road with my mum. Battersea is such a wonderful area to live in – it’s so beautiful and peaceful. It is also lovely to be within walking distance from such a great park, plus there are so many amazing independent shops, charity shops and cafés. Where do you like to indulge in a spot of retail therapy? Battersea Park Road actually has everything I need! I buy a lot of my clothes and furniture second hand, so both of the Wandsworth Oasis branches are perfect for finding bargains, along with Battersea Car Boot Sale. Battersea Flower Station is where I buy all of my flowers and plants from (plus the owners are just ever so kind). I also love wandering down Northcote Road and can often be found in Cath Kidston

borrowed from the boy’ – and a luxe tweed box jacket to pair with a pencil skirt. A wonderful coat is also a winter essential, whether the pea coat or this season’s voluminous style in ice-pink or vanilla. Boyfriend cardigans and luxurious sweaters will look great with our popular skinny Richmond fit jean and beautiful dresses will inspire for both day and evening.
Katie Randall talks style with Barbara Horspool, Jigsaw’s Product Director The colours for the Jigsaw A/W 2013-14 collection are quite rich and sumptuous and the designs feature a range of interesting textures. What was the mood and aesthetic for the coming season? There is definitely a movement towards the outdoors lending inspiration for collections this season. At Jigsaw, we took inspiration from the wild and untamed, whether this be the Yorkshire Moors, the Scottish Highlands or the lilac valleys of Wales. Texture is a great part of our DNA at Jigsaw, where we work with some of the most exquisite yarns from cashmeres to mohairs, beautiful silks to tweeds from world renowned Linton Mill and exclusive tartans from Locharron. The mood for the season was timeless, with a hint of gothic influence. We wanted to provide all of the essentials for an autumn/winter wardrobe: a great suit – our grey flannel trouser suit is ‘timelessly
How has the Jigsaw style evolved over the year? Spring/Summer 2013 saw a feminine aesthetic, with soft silk drape blouses and the reinvented 1940s tea-dress. Broderie Anglaise was crafted into pedal pushers, slim skirts and crop jackets and the colours were pastels and neons. The summer suit was also very on trend, in china blue floral or scarlet. Where have you and your team pulled inspiration from for this season? Very much a heritage inspired collection, the edit of items being quintessentially British in feel and design with a freshness coming from silhouette – volume is key for the season, so we will team oversize coats, knits, brushed cotton shirting and slouchy trousers with more fitted items and structure to give an instant wardrobe update. To what extent does Jigsaw’s design follow trends and the mainstream fashion industry? Jigsaw takes inspiration from many platforms. The catwalks may herald an ‘in’ seasonal colour, pattern, print or shape, but we also follow trends in international cities worldwide. We are always travelling for inspiration and something might capture our attention in bars, a restaurant, at the theatre or at a concert. We then translate this back to a modern working woman’s wardrobe. Quality is, without a doubt, our watch-word and with beautiful fabrics at our fingertips the key for us is to evolve. We have had great success by working traditional tweeds into casual t-shirt formats that sit wonderfully with jeans.
(where I work as a sales assistant and visual merchandiser), Oliver Bonas and Whistles. How did you start your blogging journey? I started blogging after attending a preview of an exhibition at the V&A about three years ago. I was so inspired by the pieces I saw that I wanted to write about it at home, hopefully inspiring others to go. I then decided that my blog would make a perfect online diary to share my personal style, second hand bargains and day to day life. My mum and I also have a joint blog Barri & Belle, where we write all about our favourite places in Battersea and the close relationship we have.
What are some of the key pieces from this collection and which materials were the most fun to work with? There really is something (or many things) for everyone this season. Our sheepskin car coat is a perfect wardrobe update, as is the shearling gilet. The pink coat was an immediate hit at our press launch in early May, where we took orders for this alongside the oversize cashmere jumper and our ink-blue tux jacket with leather lapels. Checks and tartans were such an important trend and our cotton check shirt nods to the grunge trend whilst remaining totally feminine, as do both the luxurious velvet tartan t-shirt and dress.
Do you think fashion trends differ south of the river compared with central London? I have to say that I don’t particularly notice a vast contrast in different styles, as everyone in London dresses in such diverse ways anyway! I’ve definitely noticed that Battersea has become more of a popular and up-and-coming area in the last few years, though…

The festival runs for nine days, with concerts on the weekends and colour and music workshops throughout the week. Returning to The Ship pub in Wandsworth for a third year. The Scotch Egg Challenge is a must for any foodie fan. Last year’s event saw 24 finalists trying to out do one another in the taste, texture and appearance stakes. Proceeds go to Action Against Hunger but if you can’t get a ticket, entrants will be invited to donate a dozen eggs to a 60-hour online auction.

FOOD & DRINK The Journal team get crafty in the kitchen, trialling two of south west London’s best cookery classes

F
ew things qualify as more daunting than being shoved in a room full of strangers who you suspect ‘do’ cookery schools like you ‘do’ pubs. Then, being directed to stab a doughty crab in the face and shove the unfortunate crustacean unceremoniously into a pot of boiling water under the watchful eye of Michel Roux Jnr’s protégé and Chef de Cuisine at Roux at the Landau, Chris King. Concocting a pepper jus that involves a list of instructions longer than the entire sum of your previous culinary knowledge up to that point – and doing so under timed conditions and the invisible weight of peer-pressure – makes matters worse. When 4pm swung around, however, I found it hard to leave Cactus Kitchens, the cookery school tasked with turning me into a competant seafood chef. And
it wasn’t just that the glasses of Legras & Haas, Edouard Brun & Cie, and R. H. Lamotte had worked their bubbly magic. Chris King is not only a great chef, he is a tremendous teacher. Quietly spoken but forceful, his confidence and playfulness is infectious. Seafood is often considered a culinary Caspian Gate and for good reason. You’ve got to get it right, or risk seriously upsetting your stomach. But before long our motley crew found themselves dissecting crabs, shucking scallops and steaming razor clams, attended upon by a friendly set of home economics tutors who insisted on making sure we didn’t have to sully our hands with washing up liquid. Operating out of the same building as Saturday Kitchen Live, Cactus Kitchens’ set-up, with breakfast, lunch and wine punctuating bouts of cooking, ensure that the day neither drags nor feels rushed. Bringing within your grasp all of the recipes you’d previously written off, the confidence bestowed is priceless. I shall start looking for razor clams and sea vegetables, the dish, accompanied by chorizo, took about ten minutes to prepare but tasted better than anything I’d thrown together for years. n

The classic Sherry is having a renaissance. Louise Hart learns more
W
hat do you get if you drink a glass of oloroso, a glass of fino and a glass of mazanilla Sherry, all in one night – all during the course of one meal, in fact? I’ll give you a hint: it certainly isn’t a crippling hangover that threatens to stretch out for all eternity. The answer is: a revelation. My companion and I spent a glorious summer’s evening dining alfresco at Rosita and the Sherry Bar on Northcote Road, where we sipped elegant Sherries, gradually developing our palates to appreciate their multifarious flavourful notes. We are now ready, as are the owners of Rosita, Cristina Garcia and Antonio Belles, for a full-scale Sherry revolution to spread across the capital. This tasty tipple, a fortified wine made from grapes harvested near the town of Jerez de la Frontera in Analusia, has always had a close relationship with Britain after it enchanted the palate of a certain explorer. Sir Francis Drake famously sacked the port of Cadiz in 1587 and his ships made off with as many barrels of Spanish Sherry as they could carry. Cristina tells me that even now England is still one of the biggest importers of Sherry in the world. The drink has been growing in popularity in London over the last few years, with a few died-hard Sherry connoisseurs opening bars and restaurants dedicated to the stuff. There is José on Bermondsey Street and Fino on Charlotte Street, but a dedicated Sherry bar (to my best knowledge) had, until recently, not popped up south of the river. Enter Rosita and the Sherry Bar. The duo already own Lola Rojo, a dining hotspot with a Spanish flavour also on Northcote Road. ‘We felt that there was still room in the area for an eatery that offered a different Spanish experience,’ Cristina tells me. Though Cristina has no formal background in catering, the foodie, who grew up in Barcelona, has devoured every snippet of information she can access about the fortified wine. As I am scanning the menu, I notice unfamiliar words next to each England is still one of the course. Cristina explains that to help guide customers through the somewhat biggest importers of Sherry mystifying world of manzanillas, finos, palo cortados, amontillados and in the world olorosos (try saying that list a few times after a couple of glasses), a Sherry recommendation is placed next to each dish. We sampled the restaurants flight option with our first course of Marcona almonds with sea salt and rositas (a crispy bread pancake) with goat’s cheese, tomato and basil. The flight consists of a 50ml glug of three different Sherries of varying ages and flavours. Although all danced on the tongue, the fino No 35 Marchamurdo Alto, Valdespino was a favourite. With an extensive list of more than 25 Sherries to choose from, there is bound to be one to suit every discerning palate. Even if you don’t enjoy Sherry, the food would be enough to lure me down Northcote Road; from patatas fritas with alli oli, brava sauce to succulent meats cooked in the Josper charcoal oven. In between hosting live jazz evenings and Sherry tastings, Rosita and the Sherry Bar’s enthusiasm for this most delectable of tipples is quite infectious. n

Community Focus The Residents’ Journal speaks to Vernon De Maynard, the chair of the Clapham Park West Residents’ Association (CPWRA), about the excellent work that his organisation undertakes in the local community
C
an you define the area over which the Clapham Park West Residents’ Association presides and explain why the organisation was set up? Our organisation covers Bennett House, Kings Avenue, Poynders Road, Bowie Close, Moberley Road, Riley House, Bruce House, Morten Close, Rodgers House, Clarence Avenue, Muller Road, Tressider House, Clarence Crescent, Plummer Road and White House. There are a total of 712 properties in the Clapham Park West Estate area. We launched in 1997 to provide a conduit between the Housing Authority and its tenants in circumstances where there was dissatisfaction with the quality of housing.
meet every two months, and as we live within a regeneration area our current issues are absence of decent homes for the majority of tenants and the plight of leaseholders, many of whom worked very hard to pay off their mortgages and are now faced with losing their homes and being priced out of the area. What sort of activities does the organisation run? Our organisation invites residents to bring their local proposals to the association and offers the support needed to get these ideas off the ground. For instance, one resident wanted to become involved in the local community garden. We helped to raise the funds that transformed the space into a fully functioning amenity.
What was the organisation’s original ethos and what does it now seek to achieve? The original ethos was to voice the opinions of local residents and to help resolve housing related issues. However now the organisation aims to improve the life of the inhabitants of Clapham Park West Estate by uniting the local authorities, voluntary organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to advance services and facilities.
Finally, what do you see in the future for this area and the organisation? Sadly, I do worry that the whole area will be rebuilt with homes that none of the tenants could ever hope to buy. Many of the residents who have been here since the estate was built in 1953, will have either died or moved on. The community that is here today will have been lost. n
How regularly does the CPWRA meet and what are some of the current issues on the agenda? The organisation has 31 members and five people sit on the committee. We

The Really Helpful Club (reallyhelpfulclub.com) is an infinitely useful resource for smart, sensible women. The members’ forum enables you to reach out beyond your immediate network of friends to share great ideas and your best recommendations. More and more women are benefitting from RHC, a new trusted best friend
A helping hand ‘T
he Really Helpful Club (RHC) is all about giving something back to the community and making your life easier,’ enthuses Sarah Austin, the enterprising mother responsible for setting up the new online forum for smart, sensible and practical women across the country. The concept for the club, an online membership forum on which members can post thoughts, questions or recommendations, arose when Sarah realised that she had an invaluable network of contacts at her fingertips, as did most women. ‘I noticed that sometimes you have to go above and beyond your network to a wider audience,’ Sarah explains. ‘One person simply cannot have the answers to everything. Equally, you don’t want to go around every single friend you have asking them the same question.’ We heartily agree. Creating a virtual online network for women to find great recommendations and therefore make the most out of life and the resources available at hand, The Really Helpful Club is a godsend. Indeed, as Sarah adds: ‘There is nothing worse than wasting time or money. Women today do not have the time to make the wrong decision, whether this is about their children’s birthday party entertainer, looking for a reliable builder, choosing an original and unique present or finding new holiday destinations in the UK and abroad. They need reassuring recommendations from like-minded women.’ With several hundred members in its first few months, the
Testimonial One member posted details of her mother’s cottage on The Really Helpful Club, offering it as a retreat destination. The ensuing testimonial speaks volumes for the success of the club: ‘The cottage we rented in your mum’s beautiful garden was perfect. I felt really safe staying there with my daughter. Recommendations via this website take the anxiety out of finding great places [to stay]. Thanks again.’

site is quickly gaining a foothold in south west London and beyond. ‘The reach of the RHC is proving quite extensive, as the various networks are coming together to create a vibrant and influential community,’ says Sarah. Visitors can post ideas in the various sections and navigate the website at ease. Sarah herself admits that she is not ‘techy’ so wanted the club to follow suit, being easy for all to utilise. Sarah has been hard at work to evolve her website, ensuring it maintains its ease of use but also develops to continuously meet the demands of the modern-day woman. New features are due to launch on the website this month. These include: a Charities section to raise the profile of local good causes; a Family Feasts area of resourceful tips to make meal times easier and tastier; an Offers section filled with exclusive discounts and privileges from local businesses and a Book of the Month hub where visitors can recommend their latest favourite page turner. Sarah explains that the response thus far has been brilliant: ‘Many women have already welcomed The Really Helpful Club into their lives. When I see the amount of women the website helps, I feel proud.’ The Really Helpful Club serves a wonderful purpose where so many other websites fail, and importantly, it has managed to carve a friendly environment on the World Wide Web. We hope to see you posting soon! n

Boys & their toys Henry Hopwood-Phillips invites Wandsworth’s inventor extraordinaire to stop tinkering for a minute and tell him his secrets... Adam Sutcliffe © Sophie Bolesworth
‘R
ight so first you need to check current patents via websites like patent.gov.uk. Second, assume that 20 people are having the same idea. Third, prove it is of genuine use to a genuine market. Finally, get someone to believe in it enough to prototype and test it.’ So, Adam Sutcliffe, a senior lecturer, a visiting tutor, the founder of inventing company Mental – a man with more gongs to his name than a orchestral cymbalist – bullet points how to realise any good ideas that might accost you in the bath. This is not music to my ears. He is almost four years too late. At the tender age of 22 I had tried, with a friend, to invent and prototype an alcoholic self-service bar, with the intention of demolishing queues on licensed premises. It failed, however, because there was nothing original enough about its design to prevent having its essentials replicated and then out-invested by a drinks giant like Diageo. Still I deemed it unprofessional to vent my spleen on an inventor whose only crime seemed to have been that he was successful (award-winning, in fact). Especially one who can boast of such a whacky catalogue of inventions that I suspect half the reason he indulges in the sport is to afford himself the fun of naming his creations. So instead, I probe into how the revelations of the Orbel, the Spoutnik, the Catchu (to name but a few) came about.
A fun frisbee with a camera the Catchu
Addressing hand hygiene challenges the Orbel
A modern microwave the Spoutnik
‘It’s often said that necessity is the mother of invention. This is true. But insight is the Grandmother,’ the young inventor answers. All very true. ‘So what does that mean in practice?’ I nudge. ‘Well insight comes from experience. I try to immerse myself in that environment physically and through research,’ he enthusiastically explains. ‘What does this do?’ I ask, thumbing an Orbel, a contraption that looks like the offspring of an air-freshner and a baby-monitor. Turns out, I am in fact handling a groundbreaking hand gel dispenser. ‘Most Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs), including the dreaded MRSA, are spread by dirty hands, and nurses generally only clean their hands around 30 per cent of the time they should,’ Adam explains. ‘We found a solution. The Orbel is easy to use and immediately available.’ The invention is clearly far from hot air too; it’s already on a sponsored trial at Hammersmith Hospital and a number of large food companies.’ It’s not all about inventing from scratch on Adam’s part though. The Spoutnik might sound like something out of The Jetsons but it’s actually a redesigned microwave. ‘The microwave is always presented in a dull grey box,’ Adam explains. The Fragor Brandt Group asked him to get imaginative. He clearly did. I know Adam has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College and another in Industrial Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art, and so push him on whether dilettantes can try their luck in the market if they have good ideas. ‘Absolutely. The Government has quite a few schemes which mean an investor is only ever risking 30 per cent of their stake. Poor interest rates have also seen a growth in what are called ‘Angel Investors’ – individuals or companies that specialise in early stage start-ups.’ ‘Ahhh, seed funding!’ I exclaim seeking to show off words remembered from my own experience. ‘Yes, seedfunding,’ Adam replies, a little bemused. I can’t leave one of London’s greatest inventors without mentioning Dragon’s Den. Adam laughs, ‘It’s great entertainment but it doesn’t reflect the real world. The amount of equity the Dragons expect in return for investment is very high.’ ‘So you wouldn’t go on?’ ‘Not unless I had a product that would massively benefit from the PR.’ n

Residents’ Journal
TAKING THE LEAD The Residents’ Journal talks to experienced dog trainer and ex-policeman Mark Anley
W
ith more than 20 years working in the Police force, what would you say is your most memorable experience? My police dog Bailey once located a suicidal man who was hanging himself in a tree in a forest. We tracked him from his abandoned car just in time to save his life with seconds to spare. I’ll always remember diving into the Thames at 2am to try to save a man in his car, submerged in 15 feet of water.
We’ve heard you have had to protect a few prestigious venues, including the residence of the Prime Minister – what was that like? Providing dog patrols at places like Chequers is a really important role. The dogs have the ability to detect a trespasser from hundreds of feet away. It could be a press photographer, a lost hiker or it could be a real threat; it’s all the same to the dog’s ability to alert the handler. Do you have any dogs yourself? I have my ex-police dog, who retired with me. His name is Eric and he is a German Pointer. I also have a Lancashire Heeler called Alf.
What is it like working as a dog trainer and personal advisor at Pets at Home? It’s interesting. One of our values is ‘We will do what we say we will do,’ so I work with pet owners until we solve all problems.
What are your future goals for your work with animals? I want to have my own dog training centre and I have a great interest in working more with the Diabetic Alerting dogs. n
Do you have any memorable stories of nightmare pooches and their transformation? Several dogs with aggression problems spring to mind. It’s nice bumping into them in the park, when previously the owners thought they wouldn’t be able to exercise them in public places.
For more information or to enlist Mark’s help, contact 07547 716 076 or email madogtraining@gmail.com (madogtrainingandservices.co.uk)
Dog Training Exercise: The stay Practice this trick at home for perfectly behaved pooches
What roles do police patrol dogs play? One of the main tasks of the police patrol dog, commonly the German Shepherd, is a missing person search. They have some great lifesaving successes and it’s often not something the general public think that they do. These dogs can be dealing with a violent offender one minute and a missing child or OAP the next. - 25 -
• Place your dog in the sit or the down position • Stand in front of the dog holding out your hand, palm facing the dog • Say ‘stay’ and then quickly reward the dog with a treat. Then repeat but take a pace backwards, quickly step back to the dog and reward with a treat • Do not pause or the dog will be tempted to move forward to join you – keep it flowing • When the dog has understood this increase to two paces and so on • Always reward the dog in the spot it was told to stay • Remember: the most common fault people have when training dogs is not being consistent with the approach

In time to host the flurry of textbooks that inevitably signal the start of a brand new school term, niche online homewares brand Rowen & Wren has crafted a sheepish spin on the generic bookcase. Their neatly sculptured farm yard animal book shelf looks to be just the ticket to inspire young and learning readers to fall in love with the world of books. Practical as well as cutesy, there’s space amongst the sheep’s folds to pack away other kiddie bits and bobs alongside a burgeoning library of books.

Hiring in an evening house cook?
Tue Aug 20, 2013 11:30 pm Haha! I was just talking to someone about this earlier today. I actually used to do this for people when my older three children were small. Was thinking about starting it up again. What a perfectly timed thread.
Tue Aug 20, 2013 9:05 pm Call me lazy but after a hard day of looking after my children and running a business the last thing I (or my husband) want to do is cook for us. I prepare all my children’s meals but once the kids are in bed I never feel like cooking for us and end up eating out or getting takeaways. Can you hire someone to come in for an hour every evening to cook your dinner? Happy to provide a recipe. Anyone interested? Anyone ever done this? Even just three times a week!
Gym running shoes recommendations? Wed Aug 21, 2013 10:07 am I think my knees may be starting to struggle (trainers 5 years old). Oops! Can anyone recommend good running shoes for the gym? Ta. Wed Aug 21, 2013 10:43 am Have you tried one of the specialist shops such as RunnersNeed? I’ve used the one in Victoria before and they discuss with you what type of running you’ll be doing and then watch you do a short demonstration in various shoes to see how they support your feet/ankles and style of running. runnersneed.com runandbecome.com/home Wed Aug 21, 2013 11:01 am
Hi, I’ve worked (as a maternity nurse) for families who have had this service. You don’t need to be super posh to have private chef. Most commonly I’ve seen cleaners and nannies with a passion for cooking staying an hour extra to cook. If you don’t have a nanny or cleaner, ask your neighbours if they have staff with an interest for cooking looking for extra hours. I myself hate cooking but am aware that many people love it, and would love to do it and get paid. (same way I love my work as a maternity nurse and cannot understand I get paid to do what I love!) But here’s my best tip: get in contact with a chef school/cooking class and ask if someone wants to come to work for free just two-three times a week for a month. They all want ‘private chef’ put on their CV to get the ‘proper’ private chef jobs paying £40/hour or £1,000/week as a live in chef. The ones I’ve met have stared out like this! The private chefs I have met usually concoct the following per session: – one ‘grown up’ fresh meal for that evening and enough for stay at home mum to eat the day after, and one freezer meal ‘family style’ to heat whenever.
I second RunnersNeed. Four years ago my husband went there to replace his running shoes (at the time he was running twice a week and went to the gym three times a week). Although he had quite an extensive budget, he was recommended one of the cheapest pairs they had (under £100) and he said it was the best pair he ever owned.
Hope you find someone!

A-level grades across the country fell by 0.3 per cent, bringing into greater relief Wandsworth’s performance which bucked the trend, rising by a startling 0.6 per cent. Breaking the performance down school by school is revealing. Chestnut grove’s A/A* pass rate was up 7.7 per cent, Saint Cecilia’s by 5.5 per cent and ARK Putney Academy climbed by 4.7 per cent. The success wasn’t merely academic in the pejorative sense, however. BTEC qualifications, undertaken in vocational subjects have also defied gravity. At Chestnut - 28 -
Grove, 64 per cent of entries and 63.8 per cent at Southfields were awarded a distinction. Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services Cllr Kathy Tracey says: ‘I would like to offer my congratulations to all our students who have performed so well in this year’s tests. These are fantastic results and testament to all the hard work and effort put in by pupils and their teachers.’ The results place Wandsworth in the top eight of high performing local authorities in the country.

The safest thing on two wheels Wandsworth Council has upped the ante on its mission to promote safer cycling in the borough, starting with a Cycle Awareness Safety Day this month. Battersea Power Station and Blu-3 will be hosting the free for all initiative on 3 September at the landmark building in partnership with The Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police and Havebike. Safety demonstrations, security marking and bike servicing will take place throughout the day but the main intention of the event is to raise awareness on both how to cycle and drive safely to minimise collisions between cyclists and HGVs. As a means to that end The Metropolitan Police Cycle Task Force will be manning ‘Exchanging Places’, an experience which enables visitors to take the driving seat of a lorry or bus to appreciate what a driver of such a vehicle can or can’t see.

Legionella: Landlords’ nightmare or a walk in the park?
BatterseaFlats.com’s Jessica Sebastian, a local estate agent with a young family, explains the appeal of North Battersea to families
Paul Tate discusses how to beat bacteria in your home, advising on recent legislation Forget Pyscho, according to the HSE there might be a real killer lurking in your shower if your boiler, tap or shower head is breeding potentially fatal legionella bacteria. Paul Tate of Tate Residential informs us that as of 2012, all residential lettings must carry out a legionella risk assessment and urges landlords and tenants to consider their own properties. ‘Ask yourself, if a boiler, tap or shower head breaks, who is responsible for getting it repaired?’ he says. ‘If it is you, then you need to be aware of the legal requirements.’ What do I have to do to comply with the law? You must carry out a risk assessment to identify and assess potential sources of exposure. You must then introduce a course of action to prevent or control any risk. This must be reassessed on a regular cycle. Assessing the risk – are conditions right for the bacteria to multiply? - Is the water temperature between 20-44°C? - Ensure incoming and stored water remains at a temperature of less than 20°C. - Maintain the correct temperature at the hot water cylinder. - I s there debris in the system, such as rust or scale that can provide a food source for legionella? - Periodically assess if there is a build-up on internal surfaces of hot water cylinder for scale and sludge.
Family properties are in high demand in the North Battersea area, especially surrounding Battersea Park. Chelsea also proves a draw, just a quick walk over Albert Bridge. As you might imagine, Battersea Park is a huge asset to families in the area, providing a newly refurbished playground for all ages. This particular park boasts a sandpit, a rowing lake and a wonderful Children’s Zoo for budding David Attenboroughs. There are many popular streets for families with children, such as Anhalt Road, Juer Street, Brynmaer Road, to name a few. They provide excellent houses and accommodation just a few minutes’ walk from Battersea Park. Some family houses can prove very good value for money in the current rental market. Many families also choose to take advantage of the spacious Mansion Block properties that are available in this area. The new developments around the park provide excellent opportunities for stylish family living, and are very popular with the ever increasing European family market in the area. n
What should you do if you identify risks? Introduce proper controls – you will need to refer to the Approved Code of Practice (details below) for guidance on the action you should take. For no extra cost, Tate Residential undertake the assessment for all managed properties. n If you are concerned, call Tate Residential 020 7622 6914 and ask for Paul Tate, who will be more than happy to offer guidance, or email paul@tateresidential.co.uk.This article is intended to start you asking the right questions. For full understanding the original regulations will need to be read by yourself or advice sort from a qualified consultant. You can also obtain advice from the HSE: 0870 154 5500 (hse.gov.uk)
