Smile and the world will smile with you Nicola Donati tells the Belgravia Residents’ Journal about growing up in Italy, diffusing bombs and working in the fashion industry francesa lee
B
orn in Tuscany, Nicola first fell in love with London at the age of eight, when he moved to the city to improve his English. Coming from what is known as a glamorous holiday destination, Forte dei Marmi in Italy, what first struck him was the size of the capital, the individual way people dressed, and surprisingly, the Underground. “I lived in a seaside town so it was very different to what I was used to but it fascinated me,” says Nicola. Nicola, whose grandfather was a pioneer in textiles, grew up surrounded by the world of fashion. From watching garment fittings to rails of clothes being shipped away, there was always something happening. “It was the 1970s so a great time of economic growth in Italy. My grandfather had a lot of clients and my cousins and I would often be with him while he worked. I remember we used to play in the corner
and used rolls of fabrics as telescopes,” he reflects. Although Nicola had an interest in fashion, he decided that he wanted to become a general manger of a top hotel and attended a renowned hotelier school in Montreux, Switzerland. “It was an all-encompassing course – we lived and trained on site and learnt every possible skill; from housekeeping to being on reception, concierge to working with the chefs in the kitchen – it was a brilliant experience.” Nicola then returned to Italy to complete his compulsory year of military service. “I trained as a bomb diffuser,” he says, surprisingly. And even on such an unsavoury topic, he remains upbeat: “I lived in Venice and absolutely loved it.” Afterwards Nicola helped his friend to run the Enrico Coveri boutique in Forte dei Marmi, which spun the idea of him starting his own line of ladies prêt-àporter. “I sold my collections in Italy and London.”
Indeed, Nicola’s love of London was clearly still calling him. “My collection culminated in me setting up my shop in Beauchamp Place in 1992,” he says. During this time he worked with top highend retailers as well as selling his garments in his boutique. A few years later and he decided to move his premises to Kinnerton Street. “I had my eye on this particular unit for a long time as I used to pass it on my short-cut through the streets of Belgravia,” he recounts. Formerly a greengrocer, he has turned it into a go-to destination for tailoring and alterations. “There’s no longer a big

demand for bespoke clothes so instead I adapt and change a piece to make it really become theirs. It may be a suit that’s been handed down through three generations or a bride’s dress, or someone who needs an evening gown or top altering for an event that night, we have the abilities to turn it around in a day.” Kinnerton Street is Belgravia’s best-kept secret and the ‘little yellow shop’ sits right in the middle. Indeed this is where Nicola looks after clients on all aspects of updating, upgrading and maintaining their wardrobe; either directly from its in-house workroom or by collaborating with the best artisans and specialists all over the world. Whether it’s altering an expensive item, diffusing a bomb or running a beach club (more on this another time), Belgravians are in very safe hands with Nicola. 51 Kinnerton Street, SW1X 8ED, 020 7245 6414, nicoladonati.co.uk

worlds apart Amanda Ibgui describes her transition from interiors to fashion emily adams
I
nspired by her love of yoga and all things creative, interior designer Amanda Ibgui has made the transition into the world of fashion. With her Belgravia-based business, she is launching Ana Heart, a yoga collection for the fashion conscious. The more Amanda practiced yoga, the more she wished that she could find more fashionable and comfortable clothing. Here she tells the Belgravia Residents’ Journal how her background in interior design helped her create a range to take from work to workout.
Can you tell us more about the collection? In the yoga studio, there’s such a strong connection between mind and body and the last thing you want is to be distracted by ill-fitting clothes that don’t work with your body in the pose. Rachel Novetsky, a globally-renowned yoga teacher, taught me through her practice of yoga how to deal with challenges; whether at work or in the home, and this helped me enormously. The collection was inspired by Rachel, and is the result of our fashion sense and our backgrounds, alongside our understanding of how the
8
body moves and needs to be supported while exercising.
Where has the name Ana Heart come from? In Indian thought, there are seven chakras: the seven centres of spiritual power in the human body. Anahata is the fourth chakra – the wellspring of love, warmth, compassion and joy. We wanted to personify the brand by giving it a real name that would emphasise the human spirit.
– precision, attention to detail and an eye for quality, comfort and style.
Miller Sports Bra
The Empowering Yoga Mat
How do the worlds of interiors and fashion compare? Both areas have similarities; there’s a huge amount of creativity, art and style in both. I often use fashion to gain inspiration for an interior design project. On a manufacturing level, the two are totally different and I was quite unprepared for that. I had to adapt to a very different working world, but that’s the beauty of the challenge.
Are there skills involved in interiors that were transferable when designing clothes? There are a number of skills that have been most useful when designing clothes
How do you juggle working in fashion and interiors? Yoga, yoga, yoga – every day! I also have a wonderful partner and a supportive team working alongside me in the office.
Which piece of the range are you most proud of?
Moss Leggings
I love all of them, but if I had to choose one, it would be the Moss leggings. They’re the definition of Ana Heart – feminine, comfortable, functional and cool. I could live in them!
Let’s Yoge Booboo Bag
What is planned for the future of Ana Heart? We are already working on season two of the collection so watch this space. Released 15 February, see the website for prices, anaheart.co.uk

These tasty treats are, as you’d expect, arranged in a heart shape and completed with a hand-piped personal message in the middle. Wined and dined If you’ve got a special celebration coming up, maybe a big birthday or an anniversary, why not toast the occasion with a glass or two? Whoever you invite along, a glass of bubbly will always go down well. Why not go all out with the Rosé Ace of Spades Armand de Brignac, produced by the award-winning Cattier family in France? [RESTAURANT review]
The proof is in the pudding The Belgravia Residents’ Journal makes its way through the crowds to see what all the fuss is about Emily Adams
T
onight, The Botanist is buzzing. It’s by far the busiest place in the area and as I jostle through the crowds, my expectations are mounting – I can barely see the bar through all the people ordering drinks. It’s starting to feel a little bit claustrophobic, but luckily the restaurant is in a more subdued, relaxed area, with Japanese-style sliding doors from the bustling bar where we are seated in a row of tightly-packed tables. It’s cosy and compact and I can almost taste what the lady beside me is tucking into. Still, it smells great. There’s an extensive menu with every classic British and European dish you could ask for. There’s also a large selection of seasonal cocktails and wines, making it tricky for me to know where to start. While I ponder over the vast menu, I’m offered
a restaurant’s staple: the inescapable sourdough. Following this, I opt for smoked Scottish salmon served with sodabread and a light horseradish cream. It’s a very generous portion and a perfect opener to the stylish menu. I wish I could eat it for main and dessert and then do it all over again. However, it’s time for the main event and following that starter, perhaps I’m expecting
too much. The warm dim lighting masks my slightly overcooked rump steak and although the béarnaise sauce and hand-cut chips are delicious, the two aren’t enough to carry the meal without the meaty star of the show. My friend chooses the lamb rump in a mushroom jus, served with kale and a mini saucepan filled with shepherd’s pie. I’ve definitely got food envy.
Thankfully dessert makes up for the stumbling block that is the main course with a cooling honeycomb mascarpone cream with roasted figs and pistachios, and suddenly The Botanist grabs my attention again. Just like the starter, I could live on this. Unfortunately it’s just a little bit too busy for the waiters and waitresses to keep up. It’s all a bit of a muddle and everyone seems rather flustered. A busy restaurant is always a good sign, but only if it can keep up with the demand. With a few more staff, and a window or two thrown open, The Botanist could certainly tempt me back. If it took things a bit slower and a bit steadier, it’d surely win the race. 7 Sloane Square, SW1W 8EE, 020 7730 0077, sloanesquare. thebotanistlondon.com

Coffee
culture The Belgravia Residents’ Journal takes a caffeine-fuelled tour of some of Belgravia’s best coffee shops Francesca Lee & EMILY ADAMS The Roasting Owner of The Roasting, Giulio Merea knows coffee better than the English know tea. It’s a bold statement but we’re convinced. Giulio knows how every bean tastes and where it has come from, and he wants his customers to know the same. The design is simple, white and minimalist with a large communal table for customers to share and there’s the odd hint of coffee-themed features – the walls are lined with wooden crates holding different blends from around the world and even the bin is disguised as a sack of coffee beans. The Roasting offers a vast array of changing
‘special’ coffees, which currently includes flavours of custard, nougat and macaroon but we sample Giulio’s ‘famous’ cappuccino as well as a double espresso macchiato. They’re both rich, smooth Italian coffees – so smooth we don’t even need to add sugar. Coffee has never tasted so good. 31 Churton Street, SW1V 2LY 020 7834 6091, theroasting.co.uk

Café Bella Maria If grandmas – or indeed Cath Kidston – did coffee shops they wouldn’t be far off the mark with the interior of Café Bella Maria. Complete with mismatched china cups and saucers, a teapot display (you can even buy a teapot to bring a bit of kitsch into your home) and Russian dolls atop a vintage working piano, it’s certainly a sight for the eyes.
Shabby-chic is what this café does best, and it seems that it’s certainly some residents’ cup of tea as there’s a steady stream of people that either take their seat in ‘nan’s living room’ or have their coffee to go. Our Americanos (using Lichfields Italian Espresso Coffee Beans) are OK. However, the presentation isn’t very impressive (the cup and saucer was the kind you would normally find in a Travelodge), and the service is a little haphazard. However, the next time we’re with our grandmas, we know where to go. 4 Lower Grosvenor Place, SW1W 0EJ, 020 7976 6280, cafebellamaria.co.uk
[LIFESTYLE] L’Eto Part of a six coffee shop chain (as well as the one in Belgravia, there are others in Mayfair, Fulham, King’s Road, Soho and Brompton), Italian L’Eto puts even the finest patisseries to shame. The window display is magnificent: there’s a cake in every shade of the rainbow, while the colourful salads are a piece of culinary art in themselves. However, we’re here to try the coffee and luckily that doesn’t disappoint
either; from artisan filter to a hot or cold Baileys latte – we certainly need help from the barista as to what to choose. There’s a new range of vegan specials that includes a red velvet cappuccino, a green matcha cappuccino and a chai tea and cinnamon latte. We opt for the latter and it comes as no surprise that it’s also the locals’ favourite. Hot almond milk is poured over the homemade chai tea mix that includes pepper, lemongrass, cloves and cinnamon sticks with cold tea. It certainly gives us a boost and is a sweet and spicy start to the morning. 10 West Halkin Street, SW1X 8JL, 020 7235 6415, letocaffe.co.uk

down the road, it also serves up great
Tomtom has become a firm favourite in Belgravia, known for its fresh coffee beans, roasted little and often in its roasting rooms in Dorset. Situated on the corner of Ebury and Elizabeth Street, there’s plenty of seats outside for watching the word pass by with a hot cup of coffee in your hands. There’s no denying that the inside is incredibly small, but it’s cosy, guaranteed to be busy and filled with the sound of coffee machines grinding away and the clink of cups and plates. We try out the new individually-ground filter coffees, which we’re told are the new alternatives to the latte. From Cuba to Guatemala to India, there are subtle
Tomtom classics including the Right Honourable sirloin steak sandwich and the usual selection of egg dishes, cooked in every way imaginable. 14 Eccleston Street, SW1W 9LT, 020 7730 1790, tomtom.co.uk
differences between different beans and our Indonesian blend is very rich. Now of course, we have to return and see if Costa Rican, Mexican, or maybe Brazilian coffee is more our thing. 114 Ebury Street, SW1W 9QD, 020 7730 1771, tomtom.co.uk

Unexpected
elegance The Belgravia Residents’ Journal discovers how interior designer Thomson Carpenter has made his mark in Belgravia emily adams
T
ucked behind the iconic Belgravian townhouses, there are some humbler properties fighting for attention. A row of charming mews houses greet me as I approach. The door of one of them is ajar, so I tentatively step inside and am welcomed by the strangest sight – it’s like something out of Doctor Who’s Tardis. From the outside I see a little two-storey house, but on the inside, a palatial marvel: three floors, high ceilings, masses of space and lavish décor. The mind behind the masterpiece is interior designer Thomson Carpenter, who is on hand to give me a guided tour of this Belgravian property. His client asked him to create a “chic pied-à-terre” and it’s fair to say he’s achieved it. The drawing room is elegant, with a Parisian feel. The 200-year-old parquet flooring, sourced from a historic château in France, and a large bespoke L-shaped sofa, designed by Thomson himself, sets the tone for this property: a soft blend of classic and contemporary designs. Talking of where his love of interior design came from, Thomson describes growing up in an old crumbling Georgian house in Sussex. “I used to go home at weekends to take down walls and rip up carpets. That was my initial training,” he laughs. I’m intrigued as to how Thomson went from a house that was completely excavated and rebuilt to, well, this? “It sounds funny but I came and just sat in

the corner of the sitting room by myself thinking of all these ideas.” By digging out the basement, a large open-plan kitchen and dining area has been created, with 18th-century marble floors, Carrara marble counters and a single piece of fossil to complete the island’s surface. One of the standout features is an 18th-century French linen closet that hides something far more interesting than clean laundry. The clients wanted a drinks trolley, but Thomson came
[LIFESTYLE] up with a stylish alternative to work with the rest of the room, converting it into a contemporary cocktail cabinet, replacing shelves with an antique mirror and bespoke wood panelling.
“An 18th-century French linen closet hides something far more interesting” Thomson might consider himself a traditional designer but there are definite glimpses of modern style. The TV is cleverly hidden behind a large mirror above the marble fireplace and the lighting offers settings for every mood and emotion imaginable. “I like classic design,” he continues. “Look at someone like Jackie Kennedy and her style and she could almost be walking down Sloane Street now – the same applies for a house. There are trends that look great at the time, but in a few years they’re dated.” It seems impossible that that’ll be true for this house. Each room
blends seamlessly into the next, guided by ‘floating’ glass and steel staircases. For this property, it’s obvious that Thomson has listened to his clients. “I spend a lot of time with them, so I get to know them well,” he says warmly. “Meetings for family homes are around the kitchen table with dogs and kids running around – I’m immersed in family life.” Little features here and there are a subtle nod towards the clients. With a car enthusiast customer to please, Thomson commissioned bespoke dining chairs to be made in upholstered tan leather, creating a 1920s Bentley car seat look. And of course, everything is of the utmost quality: a Drummonds bathroom with nickel-plated faucets and goldflecked Ralph Lauren wallpaper. “There are certain suppliers I always work with,” Thomson explains, many of which are found in Belgravia, with Soane, Kaia Lighting and Nicholas Haslam and Paolo Moschino all featuring in the designs. Even when he’s designing abroad, he remains loyal to these brands. “For a project I worked on in Australia, everything was designed in England and brought over in containers, because they wanted an English style.” Thomson is clearly a good listener and it’s obvious why this is the second time his clients have trusted him to design their home. As for the future, where are we likely to see his designs next? “I would very much like to work here more, I love the architecture of Belgravia architecture and it’s such a beautifully preserved area.” thomsoncarpenter.co.uk

This originality makes for a wonderfully diverse industry, which I am very proud to be a part of.
For those of us that are complete interior design novices, what are the first few aspects of a space that you look at when you begin a project? I always start with the main focal points and sight lines. For example when you enter the space, what is the first thing that you see? Choosing a central point for a beautiful mirror, artwork, chandelier, or piece of bespoke joinery will help anchor the rest of the space and give any designer a strong starting point to build the rest of the design around.

Makes scents Byredo’s new collection of full strength perfumes takes its inspiration from three ‘flowers of the night’: jasmine, lily and rose. Like floral shrubs that adopt the scents that surround them, these perfumes are said to gain character when they meet other essences. I NEED A LITTLE TIME The Belgravia Residents’ Journal tries out Lisa Franklin’s Signature Facial FRANCESCA LEE
H
idden away on Hans Place, Lisa Franklin’s clinic is the epitome of discreet skincare. From the exterior, you wouldn’t even notice that it’s there – and offering treatments at any hour of the day, seven days a week, it’s no wonder that Lisa’s clientele includes jetsetters, celebrities and high-net worth individuals. I’m offered a choice of drinks in the waiting room, and am led to the treatment room, and when I arrive they’re there. Well for me, it’s the little things that count. As I sit down for my consultation, Lisa immediately puts me at ease; however, it feels more like a chat with my inner conscious. As we talk she encourages me that this is ‘my time’ to really switch off. I can tell with every breath she’s analysing my skin (well it is her job) and before I’ve even gone into detail, she’s already telling me home truths. “You eat too quickly,” she says adding, “You don’t drink enough water.” I’m also told: “You drink too much caffeine.” Correct, correct and

correct. I tell her how my last treatment included a peel, which she seems to recoil at: “That’s way too harsh for your skin,” she tells me. Indeed, Lisa’s gentle approach is what she’s known for. Fifteen minutes later and I’m on the towelled treatment bed (which, may I add, also has a heated blanket), while Lisa gets to work on my Signature Facial. A cleanse and exfoliation later and I start to unwind while listening to a soothing playlist. A steam and extraction follows, and given the amount of time it takes to do, I already know that I need to cleanse more thoroughly
in future. Lisa then applies moisturiser and infuses my skin with oxygen, and as the blast of air penetrates my skin, I feel it absorb into every pore. Facial done, and the only slight negative I had is that I became rather hot in the heated blanket. First World problems. And if that was my only complaint, it’s not bad at all. Six months later and I can still hear Lisa’s words in my head: it’s your time. And that has made a world of difference, skin and lifestyle included. sugar and spice The eclectic design of Belgraves brings new money to Belgravia’s neighbourhood and is the perfect place to stay for a home away from home francesca lee
I
t’s not always easy to escape to the country, and quite often one forgets what’s on one’s doorstep. Belgraves, a Thompson Hotel, is certainly worth a closer inspection for any Belgravian looking for a stylish getaway without the mileage. It has a boutique feel (yet there are 85 rooms) and the bold interior by acclaimed British designer Tara Bernerd gives it a private members’ club feel. After checking in, my partner and I take the lift up to our room. The main selling point is the magnificent views afforded from the double-aspect windows. Although many claim that a lot of Belgravian residences are unoccupied, I certainly found the contrary; on a Friday night I watch couples making dinner together, nannies with kids in tow and residents taking their dogs for a walk (Belgraves is also dog-friendly). Indeed, my room, which has a window sofa seat means that it’s easy to watch the world go by on the streets below, or enjoy the panoramic views of Hyde Park and Central London. The room is what one would expect from such a hotel: a marble bathroom, an enormous bed and a Nespresso machine for fresh coffee when it’s tricky to get out of the aforementioned. After settling in, I head to Belgraves’ restaurant: Pont St. I must admit I’m surprised
20
“The innocuously-titled Nutella-stuffed French toast is not something to be underestimated” by how quiet it is. However, it does mean that my partner and I have our pick of where to sit, so we opt for an intimate table booth in the corner where we admire the intriguing hanging garden that adorns the walls of the hotel. It must need a lot of watering. I myself need watering and opt for a glass or two of
Champagne and find that I’m tempted by almost every dish on the extensive menu that’s inspired by various world cuisines. After significant deliberation, my partner and I realise there’s simply too much choice so opt for three starters to share. While the salmon tartare and the game terrine have their own distinct merits,
we are both instantly drawn to the chilli and garlic crispy squid. Beautifully crunchy and topped off with a zingy lime and lemongrass dip – it is certainly a dish that I would recommend. With the large quantity of starters polished off, we then tuck into some rich fare of slow roasted pork belly, which has an incredible texture – and the ‘Belgraves Bespoke Burger’, which elevates the humble burger to finer standards with the use of some tremendous ingredients, including truffle mayonnaise. Needless to say, desserts are just a step too far. However, I find that my sweet tooth is sated the next morning: I opt for the innocuously-titled Nutella-stuffed French toast. It’s not something to be underestimated. The plate is laden with French toast and topped with chocolate and caramelised bananas; just a few bites would be enough to satisfy Willy Wonka, and is something that should probably be shared between several people to avoid health complications. Having eaten well (again), and still on a sugar high from a French toast mountain, I brace myself for the chilly winter air – after all, I have a lot of calories to walk off. 20 Chesham Place, SW1X 8HQ, 020 7858 0100, thompsonhotels. com/hotels/belgraves-london

RESIDENTS’ CULTURE Sue Liberman brings us her monthly Belgravian musings
Belgravia in Bloom This year will see Grosvenor launching the first ever Belgravia in Bloom. The plans are for this to become an annual event taking place in Belgravia at the same time as the Chelsea Flower Show each year. Dates for this year are 23–28 May. Each year will have a different theme and Belgravia in Bloom 2016 will have a royal theme by way of celebrating HM The Queen’s 90th birthday and her reign of more than 63 years. The exact plans for Belgravia in Bloom are currently in the process of being finalised by Grosvenor, but are to include retailers, hotels, pubs, restaurants, churches, schools, residents, as well as the Parklets and Gardens in Belgravia. This will take the format of categories such as best floral display, fan’s favourite, best menu, best afternoon tea etc. These are currently to be confirmed so full details will follow later next month. As the first of the Palace’s planned celebrations for HM The Queen’s birthday are taking place 12–15 May at Windsor Castle, Grosvenor is looking to start Belgravia’s celebrations at that time.
Duchess of Richmond’s now legendary ball, one family’s life will change for ever.”
St Paul’s Music Dinner at The Berkeley Hotel – Monday 22 February
The area will have Union Jack flags in key locations across Belgravia and then from 23–28 May, there will be a host of activities throughout the locality, including walking tours and open gardens.
Belgravia and Lord Julian Fellowes
If you’re missing Downton Abbey then Lord Julian Fellowes has a treat in store for us and it’s all about Belgravia. Julian Fellowes’ Belgravia is a story in 11 episodes published week by week in the tradition of Charles Dickens. These 11 episodes can be delivered to your mobile, tablet or desktop via a new app, or if you prefer to read a printed book, then a hardback copy will also be available. If you’d
like to know more, then please visit his website julianfellowesbelgravia. com, where Julian tells us: “Belgravia is the story of a secret. A secret that unravels behind the porticoed doors of London’s grandest postcode. The story behind the secret will be revealed in weekly bite-sized instalments complete with twists and turns and cliff-hanger endings that will be delivered directly to your mobile, tablet or desktop via a brand new app. Set in the 1840s when the upper echelons of society began to rub shoulders with the emerging industrial nouveau riche, Belgravia is peopled by a rich cast of characters. But the story begins on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. At the
This will be the fourth year St Paul’s Church have run the hugely successful Music Dinner. Generously hosted by The Berkeley, the evening starts with a Champagne reception sponsored by Laurent Perrier, followed by a three-course meal. However, the highlight of the evening is of course the music. The members of the choir at St. Paul’s Knightsbridge are all professional singers who also sing at the Royal Opera House, the English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival opera and with the BBC Singers. Tickets are £150 per person, or £1,500 for a table of 10. For the past two years the Music Dinner has completely sold out, so booking in advance is strongly recommended. PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT Important street plans affecting Belgravia
PLANNING APPLICATIONS DATE RECEIVED: 28 December 2015 ADDRESS: Rampayne Street, SW1V PROPOSAL: Removal of partition walls at ground level to create open plan kitchen/diner/lounge area DATE RECEIVED: 29 December 2015 ADDRESS: Victoria Street, SW1V
Superhome Improvements:
Five additions that ‘make a property ultra-prime’ According to Britannicus Stone, there are a number of key features that take a property into the ultra-prime league (and help it sell “up to 30 per cent faster”). Here’s five of those features:
Mood rooms: These are becoming ever more popular. The ability to control the entire room’s environment from one pre-programmed switch is regarded as a huge bonus. Not only can a room’s temperature differ from others in a house, but so too can the music and the light – not just in terms of brightness but also colour. Filtered air can also be pumped into the room with different moisture content and aromas.
Bespoke inbuilt cabinets and furniture: The super-rich prefer not to buy furniture and cabinets in a shop, regardless of its exclusivity, but are opting to have everything bespoke. Marquetry is becoming increasingly
fashionable as it displays the uniqueness of a product. And rather than inlaid with contrasting woods as has been common practice, silver and other precious metals are being chosen instead. Plus, the more ornate and intricate the design, the better. Patterns are often reflective of the origin of the home owner, so designs can have a cultural influence.
depicting various advertisements DATE RECEIVED: 30 December 2015 ADDRESS: Groom Place, SW1X PROPOSAL: Roof terrace to be built in accordance with agreed plans DATE RECEIVED: 31 December 2015 ADDRESS: Great Smith Street, SW1P PROPOSAL: New roof access, access ladders and skylights to provide a safe means of maintenance access to parts of the roof
Kitchen design integration: Where the central island, work surfaces, floors and tiles all match or complement each other in similar materials and colour. Not that most of the people who own these properties ever cook for themselves, but the design and detail of their kitchen is a key selling asset and increases the value of their home enormously. A named interior designer is essential as are branded white goods ( fridges, washing machines, etc.) but by far the most important element is a seamless look; all the surfaces, island worktop, the floor and

the wall tiles should now match. The rarer the work surface the more prestigious the build. Ball Eye Blue stone from Derbyshire, for example, which only had one 19-tonne block available.
Cantilevered staircases: Now much in demand. The engineering of massive staircases that appear to have no support is both complex and very expensive. This in turn ensures staircases of this ilk are rare and built to order. The elegant appearance of floating stairs, usually incorporating substantial amounts of marble, delivers exceptional refinement to any property.
Sliding roofs: These open up a number of opportunities for luxury residences. They can create covered courtyards; al fresco dining for the summer and additional living space during the cooler winters, or simply just open a room up to the elements. Whether flat or sloping roof it does not matter, sliding alternatives are available for both.

A household James The Belgravia Residents’ Journal meets James Bailey, chief executive of estate agent Henry & James, to discuss what it’s like to work for an independent organisation bethan rees
I
t’s a Friday afternoon on Motcomb Street and the pavements are filled with coffee drinkers catching rays of winter sun, shoppers perusing the windows of local boutiques and workers on their lunch break strolling to appease their appetites at one of the local eateries. Residing in prime place at number one on one of Belgravia’s, if not London’s, most beautiful streets, is Henry & James, an independent estate agent. Established in 1950 by Henry Brahm, father of the current chairman Pierre Brahm, the Henry & James Belgravia office is more than welcoming. Greeted by brimming flower boxes on the outside, the light and airy space makes for a calm experience for any potential client. I’m here to meet James Bailey, the chief executive of the agency, who joined the company in 2009 after a long and successful career in the property industry. Starting in 1986, his job has taken him from Twickenham to Singapore, Chelsea to California. “I wanted to join Henry & James after being at a middle-sized company, because I felt there were too many chiefs and not enough Indians. This wasn’t a negative at all, but I wanted the chance to implement everything I had learned,” James tells me. “I established myself in the window seat here, with a glass desk and a telephone and we tripled the figures in the first year.” An industry stalwart, I ask James what lessons he’s learnt over the years in both life and work. “My favourite one is quite simple; if you’re not happy, you shouldn’t do it. You have to be happy to get the best out of what you do in all manners of work and play,” he muses. Moving from a corporate, household name agency to an independent company is a big change, and James believes there’s
“If anyone has a problem, my door, well I don’t have a door, but if I did it would always be open. I can’t stand a bad atmosphere”
one major difference between the two. “When I took over the office, I said ‘there will be no politics’,” he begins. “If anyone has a problem, my office door, well I don’t have a door, but if I did it would always be open. I can’t stand a bad atmosphere.” He explains to me that the bigger the company is, naturally, the more politics there are and emphasises that this creates a different work ethic between the two. “It’s important not to put yourself on a pedestal; never ask someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself,” says James. As Motcomb Street begins to start its regeneration, it’s safe to say Henry & James will still have a strong presence here, so give James a knock on his figurative door.
