Dear Resident, Fresh on the back of an Indian summer, here at the Journal, we’ve enjoyed making the most of the weather and sitting outside on the cobbled streets at some of our favourite establishments. We weren’t alone either – when we visited Peggy Porschen at her cake shop on Ebury Street, residents alike were basking in the last of the summer sun. Peggy, who is also our Belgravian this month, tells Francesca Lee-Rogers how she went from jetting around the world to owning a famous cake parlour on page six. On the theme of food, we bring you the latest food news (pg 13), find out which restaurants in Belgravia are taking part in London Restaurant Festival (pg 14) and review Japanese and Peruvian fusion restaurant UNI (pg 15). We hope you enjoy the issue!

t

he light bulb moment was when I received an overwhelming reaction from a couple I made a wedding cake for,” Peggy Porschen of the famous pink-painted cake shop on Ebury Street tells me of pursuing her dream of being a cake maker. Although she says she would be ashamed of the creation now – Peggy is nothing but a perfectionist – it gave her that extra push to make the swap from being a Lufthansa air stewardess to training in cake decorating and sugar craft. “I loved travelling around the world in my early 20s, but even then I used to make cakes for my colleagues.” In fact, it was when she used to fly to London that she first heard of the cookery school, Le Cordon Bleu, when she decided to move to the city and embark on a one-year intensive course. “Growing up near Cologne in Germany, the idea of running a traditional patisserie shop didn’t

appeal to me and I knew I had to make the move if I wanted to specialise in sugar craft,” she tells me over coffee and one of her scrumptious red velvet cupcakes. Course completed, hotel kitchens became her training ground before she won her first cake decorating job for Konditor & Cook, a German-owned cake company with shops across London. “That was when I was first introduced to wacky colours and the possibilities of what you can do with sugar, marzipan and icing.” Peggy then went on to work for a catering company called Rhubarb where she won critical acclaim for her designs and became the cake maker to the stars, with commissions from Elton John, Kate Moss and Stella McCartney. Deciding to go it alone, she turned her home into semi-industrial premises and concentrated on bespoke cakes as well as creating confectionery for her high-end clients

such as Fortnum & Mason. Little did Peggy know that the 2008 financial crash was just around the corner. “Wedding budgets got cut and the competition was growing; I knew then that I needed a change in direction,” she reflects. Ever the fighter,

It is quite the Instagram sensation she looked into making her dream of owning a cake shop a reality. “I had been approached two years previously by Helen Franks of Grosvenor about potential premises in the area but nothing quite fitted the bill. Then, at the Belgravia Christmas Market in 2009, I saw the to let sign for the corner shop of 116 Ebury Street and I instantly knew it was the one. In the New Year my husband and I, who also works with me, put in an offer which was accepted. We were thrilled even though we didn’t

have a business plan!” Fast forward six years and Peggy’s shop is a huge success, and she also has a cookery school academy that’s across the road from the shop. When I visit in September there’s a photographer taking photos of the displays – Peggy tells me it is quite the Instagram sensation – locals are sitting outside basking in the last of the summer sun and enjoying her creations and clients are placing orders for special occasions. There’s such a buzz, it’s no wonder when I ask Peggy what she likes most about her job, she replies, “The variation”. And with plans on the horizon to expand the academy, a Crystal and Candy Christmas collection complete with pink Santa Clauses, and releasing a new book in the New Year, she’s certainly not resting on her laurels. @peggyporschenofficial 116 Ebury Street, SW1W 9QQ, 020 7730 1316, peggyporschen.com 7

ON WOOD A renowned interior designer, the savviest of businesswomen and a true Belgravian – the Journal meets Joanna Wood emily adams

I

’m sitting in Joanna Wood’s office in her shop on Pimlico Road, waiting patiently for the busy woman herself. With a client meeting at two, an interview at three and a conference call at four, Joanna is in demand and looking around her office only confirms this. There are shelves and filing cabinets everywhere I look, but even that’s not enough to house the masses of projects the team are currently working on. With five different companies to her name and 25 years of experience in the business, I’m intrigued to find out more about the woman in charge. I’ve been given Joanna’s book Interiors for Living to look at while I wait, a compilation of different projects she’s worked on. I’m reading her close friend and fellow designer David Linley’s foreword which describes her as “an effervescent personality to which people gravitate”, when she flies through the door, cooing “hello, hello” and apologising profusely. “I’m so sorry,” she cries, “I’ve just been on site,” which is when I notice Joanna’s smart, well-dressed appearance, which is finished off with a pair of hard weather boots covered in mud and dust. I had wondered if the woman in charge may just sit back and relax

10

and enjoy her success, but I couldn’t be more wrong. When people come to Joanna Wood, there’s only one person they’re interested in seeing, and rightly so. Joanna has earned her reputation at the top of her field – but her love of interiors started in her childhood. “I was the one who built camps and changed my room around. I was the one asking for wallpaper for my birthday when I was 11,” she jokes. Joking aside, even though Joanna didn’t actively pursue a career in interior design, she single-handedly set up her business at the age of 23. “I was ridiculously young and had ridiculously little experience,” she tells me. She studied business studies and a secretarial course after her A Levels, worked in PR, then in Geneva for the United Nations and in publishing before a job opened up in the interiors department at Asprey. “They needed someone who could speak French, which I could so I got a job way above my fighting weight, and the rest is history.”

Starting out in the spare bedroom of her flat, she took on every job going until she landed her first big project that was on a grand mews near Eaton Square. “From there it snowballed,” she admits. Now, along with her business partner Andrew Buchanan, they touch base with pretty much every project and there’s a lot going on. I ask Joanna what her average day is like. “In a

[LIFESTYLE]

word: frantic. I am never bored and hopefully never boring,” she laughs. Joanna has lived in Belgravia since 1985 in a number of roads from Ebury Street to Chester Row, but what made her settle here? “Back then Pimlico Road was hip and funky,” she remembers. “There was

“I am steeped in Belgravia,” she declares, and I can’t argue with that still a launderette, and there were quite a few iconic people here like Jane Churchill, Neill Campbell, and Nicholas Haslam. It was a corner of London filled with antiques and boho designers. Lord Snowdon used to walk down the street to the taxi man’s café. It was a real mix.”

Now she’s building her own house near Elizabeth Street, the ultimate achievement in the area. “I am steeped in Belgravia,” she declares, and I can’t argue with that. I haven’t met anyone who champions this area more than Joanna. “I absolutely love that you’re right in the middle of London but it’s got such a village atmosphere. You say good morning to people and you wave at them.” As we chat, I continue to flick through the pages of Joanna’s book and she talks me through some of the projects. “I’ve been very lucky and I’ve done some wonderful things in my life. The restoration of Carlton House Terrace was an extraordinary feat. We had a team of 11 people working on it. The management was massive.” Looking at each one, I’m astounded by the variation in styles. From ultra-modern, slick, minimal designs to the cosiest of

traditional English country homes, the styles are unrecognisable as coming from one company. “I’m a great believer in doing the right thing for the client and we’re very proud that we can achieve different styles,” she explains. “I could be doing a contemporary penthouse in the morning and a 17th century property in the afternoon. It keeps the team very fresh and alert. Everyone learns new skills sets all the time. “Interior design is not about putting frills on cushions and saying ‘this pink, not that pink’,” she continues. “It’s about being thoroughly organised and professional as well.” I’ve only spent half an hour in just Joanna’s company but I wholeheartedly agree with David Linley – people will gravitate towards this outstanding woman for years to come. 48a Pimlico Road, SW1W 8LP, 020 7730 5064, joannawood.co.uk 11

oh, nikkei you’re so fine The Journal swaps continents for a taste of the orient without stepping foot outside Belgravia Francesca Lee-rogers

W

ould you like to try our Thursday cocktail?” the waitress asks me as I take a seat in the basement of UNI, a Japanese and Peruvian fusion restaurant – known as Nikkei – in the heart of Belgravia on Ebury Street. Not one to refuse a good offer, or indeed a cocktail, I’m impressed at the speed the Yuzu Mint Fizz that arrives at my table, even if the colour does resemble something that Shrek might drink. It tastes much better though, I can assure you. The restaurant – which has taken its name from the Japanese word for sea urchin, one of the country’s delicacies – has just unveiled its new menu. The interior, designed by Andrew Martin, is super stylish and offers two very different dining experiences; patrons can either choose from a more formal, intimate experience on the lower ground floor

where they can sit on banquettes around wooden tables or they can watch the chefs cook and opt for a casual meal around the marble sushi bar on the upper floor; either way the restaurant has made the most of the minimal space it has on offer. UNI is the creation of former Nobu chef Rolando Ongcoy and its new menu has been devised by its ambitious head chef, Stalinberg Bergonia, exSushisamba. On first impressions it is extensive, and I soon realise that I’m in danger of having eyes too big for my stomach. However with a little guidance from the waitress, I pick a

range of dishes to sample. The king crab tacos are up first, the shell gives the perfect crunch while the lime, coriander, chilli and spicy miso cuts through the meat and I’m immediately

The creation of former Nobu chef, Rolando Ongcoy left wanting more. Next up is the yellowtail tiradito. The sliced fish is accompanied with a ponzu and lime citrus sauce that gives it a tangy kick while the garnished daikon and beetroot cress provides the plate with some colour. The fish is exceptional but the sauce is slightly overpowering for me. A colourful selection

of sushi, sashimi and maki rolls follow. A word of warning though: the wasabi is pungent. The feast is not yet over and a tapas portion of tofu arrives at the table, followed by lamb chops and a side of chargrilled asparagus, served with Yuzu infused oil and sea salt, two of the restaurant’s speciality dishes. The lamb reminds me of a summer barbecue while the asparagus is packed with flavour. A chocolate fondant and citrus sorbet is an indulgent way to end the meal. All in all, we’re fans of the new menu and you’re sure to find us here any day of the week, cocktail in hand, of course. 18a Ebury Street, SW1W 0LS, 020 7730 9267, restaurantuni.com 15

Now that the summer is over and the majority of Belgravians are back, it’s time to sort out any slight niggles, treat yourself or give yourself some TLC while you get back into the swing of things. PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT Important street plans affecting Belgravia

Creative hub at Eccleston Place gets the go ahead Eccleston Place is set for some big changes as Grosvenor’s plans for an 80,000 sq ft development are set in motion

A

new creative hub for retailers and designers at Eccleston Place has been granted planning permission by Westminster City Council. The development, put forward by Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, has been designed by architects BuckleyGrayYeoman and will provide 80,000 sq ft of shops, co-working spaces and eateries, all arranged around a landscaped courtyard. The site, which is situated near All images courtesy of Grosvenor

Victoria Coach Station, will see four buildings reconfigured and refurbished to create the new space. A new pedestrian route from Ebury Street to the courtyard is also planned which will connect the development with the retail already available on Elizabeth Street. The new walkway will help bring together the whole of Belgravia, making it more accessible to both visitors and residents. Along with cafĂŠs and restaurants, retail space will be available for

up-and-coming designers and makers and there will also be co-working spaces for a mixture of creative businesses, as well as a boutique fitness space. The privately managed courtyard will also be a flexible event space for the local community to enjoy. Architect BuckleyYeomanGray already works with a number of high profile clients including Barclay’s, Aviva, the Royal Bank of Scotland and Channel 5 and is keen to build on the existing character of the area for this project. It plans to refurbish each building throughout and create new shop fronts at ground level ‘to activate the streetscape’. As with all of Grosvenor’s previous developments and projects in the area, staying sensitive to the original buildings and now infamous aesthetic of Belgravia is of the utmost importance. Director of Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, Anna Farnes has commented on the agreed planning permission and said: “This is a really exciting opportunity to convert an 24

underused space in South Belgravia into a creative hub for entrepreneurs and independent retailers. This new place – for visitors, workers and residents – will play an important part in contributing to the diverse and creative character of the area.”

Staying sensitive to the original buildings is of the utmost importance Director of BuckleyGrayYeoman, Paul White, also added: “The Eccleston Place development draws on the surrounding Belgravia street pattern to create life and activity in a currently under-used group of buildings. The development will centre around a courtyard on a new pedestrian route through the centre of the block, creating a tranquil, pleasant place populated by small businesses, start-ups, retailers, cafes, designers and makers.” grosvenorlondon.com

vents at St Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge are always fabulous. For those of you who attended St Paul’s Welcome Back Garden Party on Thursday 8 September, I’m sure you’ll all agree it was a wonderful evening. It was great fun; there were lovely people in attendance and yummy canapés and drinks to be had. The next go-to event for your diaries is St Paul’s Foundation Celebrity Christmas Carol Service and tickets are already selling fast. This is taking place on Tuesday 6 December, 2016 at 6.30pm. With just over two months to go, it is the perfect way to kick off the festive season in style where you can enjoy fabulous music, festive readings, chilled Champagne, canapés, mince pies and hot mulled wine. Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham of Downton Abbey) and other celebrities will be entertaining us with some fun readings on the night, plus there will be music

Although it’s only October, it’s important to plan ahead so you don’t miss out on the Celebrity Christmas Carol Service at St Paul’s

from the renowned choir of St Paul’s Knightsbridge Festival Choir and the children from Knightsbridge School. For those of you who attended last year’s carol service, I’m sure you’ll all agree it was a wonderful evening with fabulous readings from the many celebrities who attended and Christmas carols were heartily sang by all. The Champagne reception that followed the Carol Service was the perfect end to a perfect evening. St Paul’s looked truly magical on the night and was totally packed. The

evening is always hugely supported by all residents, traders and businesses in the area. Tickets for the evening will be in high demand so if you would like to attend, its website is now open for ticket sales: spkb.org/thefoundation-carol-service. entrepreneur and local resident Alison Cork is taking an office at 23a Motcomb Street. Her three floors above Christian Louboutin will be transformed into an interiors hub, from which she will run her furniture showroom and her interiors portal alisonathome.co.uk. Alison said, “It’s been a dream of mine to live and work in Belgravia, and I’m thrilled to be doing just that. I hope people will feel free to come and see our wonderful and affordable furniture.” Until next month…

As the

B

ath is one of the most famous and fashionable British spa towns, and the only one that has a natural working thermal spa. So well-known are its hot springs that the city gets its name from the Roman baths themselves. Not only are the baths a World Heritage Site, Jane Austen was a notable Bath resident (it’s even possible to stay in the former novelist’s home), and it demonstrates one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the UK. This is especially evident in the form of the famous Grade I-listed Royal Crescent, designed by architect John Wood, the Younger. Built between 1767 and 1774, it consists of a row of 30 terraced houses in a curvature and their stone façade remains much the same as when they were first constructed. As there is no through traffic, the crescent is in a peaceful position as the city centre is a five to 10-minute walk away and mainly comprises residential homes. It overlooks a lawn and part of Victoria Park and its location has long had famous associations, with literary critic Mrs Elizabeth Montagu once saying: “The beautiful situation of the crescent cannot be understood by any comparison with anything in any town whatsoever.” 28

In the row of Georgian buildings is The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa, featuring 45 individual rooms and suites altogether, a swimming pool and spa and an acre of perfectly manicured garden. Such is the grandeur of the five-star hotel that it’s rumoured to be popular with celebrities including Johnny Depp, the Rolling Stones and U2, and it has also been featured in films including The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley. Upon arrival, the porter takes care of any immediate

“The beautiful situation of the crescent cannot be understood by any comparison with anything in any town whatsoever” – Elizabeth Montagu, 1780 requirements while I’m struck by the incredible homely feel. Next to the entrance is the main drawing room that features sumptuous

sofas and luxurious furnishings, while light floods in through the expansive window. As I visit during the winter, an open fire is crackling and a guest and his dog are making the most of the cosy setting, with the latter catching 40 winks by the armchair (the hotel is also petfriendly in parts). My stay for the night is in a Classic Suite in a separate building that backs on to the crescent. This means I can admire the architecture from the balcony and make the most of the garden view. Along with classic antique furniture, the room has been brought up to date with modern pieces and appliances and the home-from-home feel of the hotel is once again reflected in the suite. Luckily for me, the 3 AA awardwinning Rosette Dower House Restaurant is located underneath my room and is the perfect place

[LIFESTYLE]

for indulging. Executive head chef David Campbell, who was previously the head chef for the England rugby team, states that presentation and ingredients are among the key aspects of his culinary success and I’m more than

eager to try the ‘Taste of the Crescent’ sixcourse dining menu. First of all though, it’s important to whet my appetite, so I opt for a glass of fizz in the adjacent Montagu Bar & Champagne Lounge. Back in the restaurant, and I start to work my way through the courses. The stand out dish is a duck egg with pea, mushroom and herb velouté, crispy chicken skin, ham and croutons – it melts in my mouth. I’m a sugar fiend so wherever I dine my eyes automatically descend to the end of the menu. The deconstructed banoffee pie with caramelised banana chunks, banana sorbet, cream cheese coated biscuit crumb and caramelised popcorn

exceeds my high standards. Just in case six courses isn’t enough, a selection of petit fours to accompany coffee mean that although I declare to the waiter that I couldn’t manage another bite, I find room. After all, who could turn down a strawberry ice cream ball coated in white chocolate, salted caramel fudge and a mojito macaron? A fulfilling meal equals a good night’s sleep for me and after breakfast, I’m ready to check out the new facilities at The Spa & Bath House. Put it this way, if you don’t manage to get to the Roman baths, you won’t be disappointed with what’s on offer at the hotel. The 12-metre heated pool is housed in a cathedral-like building with gothic windows and is unlike any spa I’ve been to before. Barrel hot tubs give an additional quirky touch while the steam room, sauna and treatment rooms complete the whole spa package. I find it easy to while the hours away before leaving to head back to London feeling like a new person. Room rates for The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa start from £265 night for a Classic Double on a B&B basis. 16 Royal Crescent, Bath, BA1 2LS, 01225 823 333. Change is a good thing as the Journal finds out when talking to James Bailey of Henry & James francesca lee-rogers

W

hen we last saw James Bailey, chief executive of Henry & James on Motcomb Street back in February, he was on fine form – in fact, he is known in the area for his positive outlook, friendly persona and straight-talking attitude. Despite the many changes affecting the property market over the last six months, including Britain leaving the European Union, James remains his same upbeat self. “Although the majority of people in Central London voted to remain, I’ve found the actual feeling is that we’ve made the right decision and Britain has made a firm stance and put itself back on the map,” he tells me. James goes on to say that now autumn has arrived and we’re fresh on the back of the success of the Olympics and the Paralympics, it has sent one of the many positive messages to the rest of the world. “It shows that our economy is strong – we’re the fifth in the world – and we can afford to fund the training. It wouldn’t surprise me if we went further up in the ranks either.” In the last three months, Henry & James has been completing deals from £1-£15 million, to a very international market. “We’ve sold to French, Spanish, Czechs and Middle Eastern buyers,” says James. Now that the sales and lettings departments are under one roof, it means that the teams are working more closely than ever before. “Sales, lettings and property management work together as a full circle, which is conducive to being in the same office.” James describes the agency as “old fashioned but with a modern 34

“Sales, lettings and property management work together as a full circle, which is conducive to being in the same office” attitude”. An example of this is when one of James’ team popped round to drop some milk off in a nearby property that they manage when they found out that the client was coming back from Australia for a while. “It’s this attention to detail that our clients appreciate and it makes us stand out from the crowd, and in turn they keep coming back to us.”

With the current works including the redevelopment of The Pantechnicon taking place on Motcomb Street, James is looking forward to its facelift being completed. “It’s going to regenerate the street and I envisage that it’s going to be the epicentre of eating, drinking and entertaining in the area. “As well as passing trade, there are some wonderful hotels on the doorstep that bring new people here. That, along with the Belgravian regulars, means that I can’t walk down the street without saying ‘hi’ to someone – and that’s what I love most about working at Henry & James.” 1 Motcomb Street, SW1X 8JX, 020 7235 8861, henryandjames.co.uk
