n an ever-fragmented political world, it’s an interesting time to be British. But defining Britishness – the state or quality of being British – is not always an easy thing. So I turned to the future of our country and consulted CBBC’s Newsround, which gave me “British is a hard thing to describe... but I’m proud of it.” So, on that note, we gave up trying to define it and built an issue. We travel across the pond to celebrate just a few of the Brits abroad who are taking Hollywood by storm (page 24) and, a little closer to home, we are lucky enough to speak with two Olympians, Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin, as they prepare for the dressage at Bolesworth International this year (page 34). We discover that you don’t need to take out a mortgage to enjoy the polo (page 38) and talk to Patrick Grant, tailor and Great British Sewing Bee judge, about restoring pride in Britain’s textile communities (page 30). Then there’s food with Gary Usher and Nigel Haworth (page 91) – two of the north’s finest, furniture from Teddy Edwards (page 162) and a celebration of Cheshireness on page 102. The list goes on. And if you’re not feeling particularly best of British (whatever that means), turn to our friend and columnist, Melissa Porter(page 23), for a little dose of inspiration to feel like the best version of yourself every day. I think that’s all any of us can ever hope to be, and just think what we could achieve... On that reflective note, enjoy this issue and please do get in touch if you have anything to share.

My life in CHESHIRE laura wolfe, managing director, wolfe

A

“I’m lucky: I wouldn’t be where I am now without my family”

t the age of 30, Laura became the youngest and first female regional head of the Institute of Directors (IoD); today, she runs Wolfe event and marketing in Manchester, working with the likes of Manchester Airport Group, Pets at Home, Leesa Sleep and the Big Chip Awards. “My role at the IoD was to grow membership and do away with some of the old ways, bringing it into the present day and letting people know about what we did and could achieve as a region. Part of that was a Director of the Year programme, where success was recognised and celebrated and we created a network of ambassadors. We now run this for the IoD and it’s been rolled out across the UK organisation. “That was really the point where I fell in love with events and brand building. So when my time with the IoD was complete, that’s the path I chose to follow, launching Wolfe seven years ago. “I launched Wolfe with my brother, who lives in the US, and one of our first jobs was a huge contract with Jaguar. It was an amazing start to doing things myself and my way. And in 2012 we acquired the North West Football Awards, which recognises football excellence on and off the field, from the male and female football leagues. They grow each year. I’m so proud. “I have to confess I am a perfectionist (don’t ask the team!), possibly a little OCD, too. But then I also feel that guilt we all experience as women sometimes, when we can’t quite do everything perfectly! My partner is really understanding and accepts that sometimes if he wakes in the night, I’ll be on my phone.” Laura shares these anecdotes with a knowing smile but also isn’t afraid to admit that it’s not always been easy. “Everyone has tough times both in business and in life. I suffered terrible postnatal depression after my son Sami was born, juggling life, two children and a business and feeling that guilt and helplessness. I am so pleased that the stigma around mental health is being addressed in the media. You never know what’s going on with people, so be kind, always. “I’m lucky: I couldn’t be where I am now without my family. My mum and dad are both role models. My late dad was a captain of industry and I miss him dearly. And my mum has spent her life giving back and was awarded an MBE for her charity work.” Laura has clearly taken a leaf out of her mum’s book and is an ambassador for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, A Smile for Orly and has just begun supporting The Offside Trust. Living in Cheadle with her partner, Daniel, and two boys; Natan, 11, a county swimmer and Sami, 5 who clearly shares the other love of his mum’s life: football. And Manchester City, to be specific. “My brother took me to my first match when I was six or seven and that was it. I don’t wear red, for obvious reasons,” she laughs. NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Sarah Callander Beckett who has been appointed the High Sheriff to the county of Cheshire 2017/18. Sarah will represent the Queen in matters relating to law and order for a voluntary 12-month term. During her time in office, Sarah will be focusing on rural issues: both the negative, such as rural isolation and mental health issues, and the positive, celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit of enterprise and the contribution of rural communities to tourism. This includes judging events such as the Baker Wynn Wilson £25,000 Community Pledge, where a broad range of worthwhile organisations and charities throughout East Cheshire have been invited to apply for much-needed funding. As well as attending events throughout Cheshire, the new High Sheriff of Cheshire will also be holding events at her home, Combermere Abbey, one of Cheshire and the UK’s most significant estates and top heritage sites. A s I w a s s ay i n g . . .

How are you? Melissa Porter asks that innocuous question we all ask and reply to every day. But take a step back: How are you really?

H

ow are you? Perhaps you’re at a point in life where you feel fulfilled and on track, or maybe you feel stuck, angry, disappointed and frustrated? Imagine if I told you it’s possible each day to feel like you’re the best of British (regardless of your geographic origins). Would you like to wake up each morning and, just as your feet hit the floor, to feel the excitement of your new day begin to build up inside you? It is possible to feel like your best version of yourself each and every day, so here are some of my favourite life hacks to help you reach yours: • Accept that life will be filled with challenges, people and situations that push your buttons. The quality of your life will be determined by the quality of your thinking in relation to these. • Understand life is a journey and the quality of your experience of this journey is the way you choose to approach life each minute of each day. Grumpy or grateful? • Become aware that the way you approach life is based on your choices. To make no choice in a situation is a choice. Your choices will be affected depending on whether your thoughts are based on fear and scarcity, or power and trust. • Consider the idea that we are not shaped by our environment but, instead, by the choices we make. The choices we make are inspired by our thoughts. When we choose love-fuelled thoughts – those which are powerful with the knowledge that we are safe and protected – our choices are affected positively, and vice versa. • Our thoughts are personal to us and we can control, replace and challenge them. Some of our thoughts are learned from our childhood and, once we become increasingly aware of

which thoughts no longer serve us, we can replace them with others that do. • To become increasingly aware of our thoughts, we quiet our minds through various techniques, such as meditation, walking in nature or eliminating sugar, stress and processed food from our lives. We exercise regularly and surround ourselves with people who inspire and support our transformation into daily happiness. We choose to eliminate gossip, blame, shame and judgement from our life, which are actions and behaviours born from fear-filled thoughts, and don’t serve our bigger picture of achieving daily happiness. • Understand ‘No’ is a complete sentence, and you’re not required to justify or explain yourself unless you wish. • Doing what you love and spending money and time on yourself is not selfish. Au contraire, it’s a selfless act of love that will see you become increasingly able to offer others more love and kindness, because of your refreshed and fulfilled self. I’m looking forward to bumping into your best self around Cheshire. Much love and light. Melissa is a professional, certified transformational life coach (melissaportercoach.com)

e The Hollywood Hills may be located on the opposite side of the Atlantic, but these days the cinematic elite owes much of its membership to this country’s long history of nurturing acting talents of the highest order. Jake Taylor looks at four British stars who – fuelled by stories of Shakespeare and Olivier – have conspired to effortlessly conquer the silver screen

DAMIAN LEWIS Though Lewis is undoubtedly English through and through, he’s somewhat of an anomaly when it comes to British actors. In spite of his Eton education and earlier allegiance to the Royal Shakespeare Company, Lewis’ most notable roles have been those depicting characters from across the pond – and on the small screen to boot. “I don’t feel that I’ve missed out on anything,” he says. “I’ve been extremely fortunate to be able to work with so many outstanding actors and do such interesting work. I haven’t found the same level of excitement or quality of material in the movies I’ve done that I’ve been able to find in TV.” Lewis made his break in the award-winning Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-produced

2001 mini-series Band of Brothers. Since then, leading roles as Homeland’s Nicholas Brody and Billions’ Bobby Axelrod have meant that the London-born star has often found himself ditching his usual articulation for a decidedly passable transatlantic twang. “I guess it’s quite ironic that I’ve ended up playing these blue-collar Americans,” the 46-year-old smiles. “But I love the directness of these American males who have a raw physicality about them. They don’t waste time or hesitate before taking action and going after what they want. I take a certain pleasure in being able to throw myself into the mindset of a man like that; you admire the passion and ruthlessness.”

25

GEMMA ARTERTON Having made her film debut as head girl at the notorious boarding school St Trinian’s, Arterton found herself segueing from classic British characters like the titular Tess of the d’Urbervilles to modern cinematic institutions as the 73rd Bond Girl – Agent Strawberry Fields – in 2008’s Quantum of Solace. Her latest project, WW2 comedy Their Finest, sees this English rose portray Catrin Cole, who is called up to write a script for a propaganda film about Dunkirk for the Ministry of Defence. Alongside a host of legendary British actors, including Richard E Grant and Bill Nighy, Arterton hopes the film “will be an inspiration

26

for women in its own gentle way”. “With all the men going off to war, women were suddenly called upon to work in munitions factories, drive buses, serve in the war office, and assume positions of responsibility that had generally been closed to them,” the 31-year-old explains. “But I think this film creates a hopeful spirit for audiences. “The film revolves around a female character who is a feminist without knowing it. Catrin is very gentle and she’s living in a very sexist era where women were far from being treated as equals, but she also knows when to put her foot down to defend herself and not get pushed around.”

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature

emma watson Another young actress who broke through in what has become one of British cinema’s defining franchises – Harry Potter, no less – Watson’s turn as Belle in this year’s live action update of Disney’s 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast saw her rubbing shoulders with the great and the good of the nation’s acting talent. As part of an ensemble cast boasting Dan Stevens, Ian McKellen, Ewan McGregor and Emma Thompson – to name but a few – Watson combined the continental charm of Belle with her own off-screen persona as a passionate feminist activist. “Obviously an animated film is an animated film, but a film set in a real-life setting requires something different,” the 27-year-old remarks. “So Belle is a horse-rider and a mentor, and if you’re going to get on a stallion in the mud and you’re going to ride through an entire forest to get to a haunted castle that’s however many hours away, you can’t really do it in ballet shoes!

“Though her cinematic pedigree is invariably tied to her home nation, her future looks to be more European, àla Belle” “So I wanted to make sure that what Belle is wearing was real, authentic and practical – and something where you could believe that Belle was doing what she was doing in it.” Now a UN Goodwill Ambassador with a global presence, Watson has stepped out of the shadow cast by the fame she attained at such a young age. But though her cinematic pedigree is invariably tied to her home nation, her future looks to be more European, à la Belle. “I always liked the pastoral, country idyllic look,” she agrees. “Rustic chic! I’d like to go and live in Provence and carry a basket and eat bread and cheese every day and wear an apron. Sounds great!”

Feature | The CHESHIRE Magazine

TOM HIDDLESTON In recent years, a string of Hollywood hits and that well-publicised yet short-lived romantic relationship (Taylor Swift, in case you missed it) have raised Hiddleston’s media profile no end – but not always in the most positive sense. Another Old Etonian with ties to the RSC, the Westminster-born star has become a recognisable face on both sides of the pond, mostly thanks to his recurring role as the antagonistic Loki in the sprawling Thor and Avengers series. And despite the comic book adaptation being the current darling of the American film industry, it was fellow Brit and Shakespearean aficionado Kenneth Branagh – director of 2011’s original Thor film – who was instrumental in getting Hiddleston onto the big screen.

“Kenneth provided a stunning opportunity to work on a story that, while festooned in fantastical lurid imagery and themes, somehow anchors all that within family and the relationships within,” the 36-year-old enthuses. “It’s built from Shakespearean templates about brothers who love each other, who hate each other, and who need each other. That film was immeasurably important to my development, and Kenneth’s guidance has been of paramount significance.” Hiddleston’s Tinseltown takeover has even led to suggestions he could be the man to step into Daniel Craig’s sizeable shoes, should he step away from 007. All the on-screen acclaim and occasional tabloid trouble, however, can’t mask that ingrained Etonian eloquence and discomfort with the glitz and glamour of his profession. “It’s such a nebulous, ephemeral concept that to even attempt to analyse and carve up is almost impossible,” he sighs. “And there’s a large level to it that doesn’t feel real, or have any bearing on my reality, so I don’t have much of an opinion one way or the other on the notion of fame.”

A Man for all

Seasons Patrick Grant, the fashion designer credited with reviving Savile Row, talks to Jan Clarke about the sustainability of the British clothing industry and the creation of the Community Clothing Project

30

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature

P

atrick Grant arrives for our interview and greets me with a warm smile. He’s elegant, charming and seriously cool. Even dressed casually in jeans and a sweater, he has an effortless style which befits his numerous ‘Best Dressed Men’ listings. He’s graced the pages of male style bibles such as GQ and Esquire, and is also well known on our television screens as a judge on the BBC’s Great British Sewing Bee. But don’t be fooled: this is a man on a serious mission, and one who is not afraid of a challenge. His passion is evident from the outset as he explains, “Britain has a proud tradition of making the very finest textiles and the best clothes – clothing that can last a lifetime. I have pieces that belonged to my father and grandfathers, garments with a story. But the British clothing industry constantly faces enormous problems, from seasonal hiring-and-firing of skilled workers, to zero-hour contracts and factory closures.”

As we talk more it is clear that the design and creation of beautifully made British clothing is quite simply his ‘raison d’être’. He’s steadfast in his conviction that the vital element which will move the British fashion industry forward is integrity. Society’s addiction to ‘fast fashion’ and the ripple effect this has created is something he finds very hard to digest. “Everyone in Britain should be able to afford to buy exceptional quality British-made clothes and play their own part in sustaining and creating British jobs,” he tells me. It is with this concept in mind that Grant set about creating Community Clothing, an ambitious and innovative social enterprise. The community project is a British manufacturer’s cooperative which makes quality, affordable clothes and creates jobs for skilled workers. Manufacturing within the clothing industry is hugely seasonal, so the factories involved set about utilising the space in quiet periods to make a range of stylish clothing. The idea is that, by thinking differently, British factories can be operational year-round, making clothes everyone can afford. The range is cost engineered, incorporating simple design and sold directly to the consumer, which cuts out the usual wholesale and retail mark-ups. The result is an affordable range of beautifully made classics, together with continued employment and stability for those working within the cooperative. As we talk, I’m inspired. The project already includes seven manufacturers and is not only creating jobs, but a real sense of community spirit and pride, too. It is Grant’s experience and in-depth knowledge of how the industry operates which has enabled him to create the concept of Community Clothing. His understanding of the manufacturing process, creativity and design skills, and entrepreneurial spirit, all play vital roles in bringing this industrious plan to life. Patrick began acquiring these skills at a young age, already imbued with a fascination for how things are made. Leeds University. Ten years later, after working in the UK and abroad, he attended Oxford to study for a Master’s in Business Administration. His thesis in 2005 focused on the regeneration of luxury fashion brands.

“People are starting to change: they are beginning to implement the same principles to their clothes that they apply to food” During 2005, Grant learned that the bespoke Savile Row tailor Norton and Sons was being advertised for sale by the Grainger family. In a bold move, Grant sold his house and car and borrowed from friends to raise the purchase price. The deal was completed in December 2005 and, by 2009, Grant had also relaunched E Tautz and Sons, the defunct ‘ready to wear’ subsidiary of Nortons. Having successfully revived both companies, Grant was awarded ‘Menswear Designer of the Year’ at the British Fashion Awards 2010, in recognition of his work with Tautz. In 2013, he expanded further; working under his Hammond and Co. label, he collaborated with Debenhams to produce a menswear range which is now available in 50 stores and online. He also includes working with Barbour as creative director for their Beacon Heritage Line among his accomplishments, and has consulted for many brands, including House of Holland, Christopher Kane and Antony Price. It’s evident from our conversation that Patrick is very proud of this, his latest project. He tells me, “Customers are really getting on-board with the concept and are willing to wait for particular items when they become out of stock,” he tells me. “People are starting to change: they are beginning to implement the same principles to their clothes that they apply to food. They are interested in the provenance: how it’s made and the conditions for the workers.”

32

When it came to spreading the word about Community Clothing, Patrick was absolutely delighted to be invited by Selfridges to take part in their ‘Material World’ campaign, since sustainability is a core value for the store. Patrick and Selfridges recently took Community Clothing on the road and set up a series of talks and pop-up events in the Trafford, Manchester and Birmingham stores. The aim was to inspire a conversation around the importance of sustainability within the modern fashion industry, as well as to give shoppers the opportunity to view and buy from the range. “We have been thrilled with the response and way the project and the collection have been received by Selfridges customers,” Patrick tells me. “We have started with a fairly small collection which includes shirts, jeans, sweaters, Harrington jackets and a Peacoat, but the range is growing all the time and we have plans for further expansion.” The first collection, a range of classics can be bought online from Ebay. Patrick and Community Clothing CEO, Lucy Clayton, together with the team, felt that this was the right platform for the brand, as it has a strong community feel that very much reflects their own ethos. The range can also be bought from the Community Clothing shop at 14-16 Lord Street West in Blackburn. (communityclothing.co.uk)

This year, Bolesworth International will be adding international dressage to the event and welcoming two of the country’s elite dressage riders: Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin. They speak to Louisa Castle about the art of dressage, wonder horses and Olympic gold

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature

O

ne of Britain's most successful dressage riders, Carl Hester MBE is an Olympic gold medallist, European and World Championship medallist and all-round nice guy.

Explain the discipline of dressage for us? It's very much about being in tune with your horse, working as a team, training for suppleness and cadence, and developing a partnership where horse and rider are working as one. During competitions and tests, horse and rider are asked to perform a set series of moves around the arena with the judges marking those moves for accuracy, movement, balance, suppleness and harmony, to name just a few.

What are the secrets to success? Without doubt hard work, planning, being open-minded and training with the best people you can are all keys to success. You then need to find the talented horses and have a little bit of luck as well.

What advice would you give to someone with dreams of dressage? Get a good trainer, stay focused and never give up learning. With horses, one day you can be on top of the world and the next you can be on the deck.

If there is ever a spare moment, what do you enjoy doing to relax and recharge? Socialising with friends is very important, whether going out for a meal or eating at each other’s homes. I also try and do extra fitness work, but I am either on it and doing well or can slip off the wagon!

A few of your favourite things... My dogs – they are very important to me and I love having them around. And my home and yard – I am very proud of the set-up we have and the facilities we enjoy every day.

What are the most memorable moments of your career? It has to be at the European Championships where I won my first individual medals, and then of course London 2012 – an event to remember forever.

What are you looking forward to at Bolesworth this year? It is brilliant that Bolesworth has introduced international dressage at the 2017 event. The crowds are always so supportive and there is always plenty to watch as well as the shopping and hospitality. What more could you ask for? (carlhester.co.uk)

What should spectators be looking for? I would hope they look for harmony between horse and rider with as little tension as possible. Everything should be calm and together but obviously a winning test will also have expression and that ‘wow’ factor.

You ride and teach, what are the best bits about each? Finding a horse in the first few years of his life and training him to Grand Prix level will always be something to look back on and be proud of. When it comes to training, I have always enjoyed helping riders, and watching their skills and knowledge grow with their horse. Then following their progress in the competition arena is great.

“I have always enjoyed helping riders” 35

C

harlotte Dujardin CBE and her horse Valegro shot to fame after representing Great Britain at the London Olympics. She is Rio 2016 Olympic Games, European and World Champion, and holds all three world records in the sport of dressage.

What attracted you to dressage? My family was always passionate about horses and ponies, so it was natural that both my sister and I would start riding. My first love was showing and I went on to win at the Horse of the Year Show. That really opened my eyes to what it was like to head the line-up at a major event. I quickly learned that, to get the best out of any horse or pony, you had to be a team, learning together and for this dressage was the obvious choice.

How achievable is it for ambitious young riders today? Both Carl and I have achieved our success through hard work and always striving to increase our knowledge. Neither of us were given anything, but we have certainly made the most of the opportunities, so yes I would encourage young riders to dream big and aim for the top and surround yourself with good trainers. You never stop learning.

Tell us about your magical Olympic journey. My major competition success is without doubt thanks to the huge faith Carl had in me and, of course, the wonder horse that is Valegro – or Blueberry, as we call him at home. The Olympics was such a big achievement for me, and winning gold medals is just the most magical feeling in the world. After London 2012 I did start to feel the pressure of everyone wanting my time, and there was so much media interest in the success. It took me a while to process what was happening but thankfully everything fell into place and I definitely came out of it a stronger person looking to the future.

Your relationship with Valegro? He is an incredible horse and he has given me so much. He just deserves the very best and has done so much – not just for me and Carl, but the dressage world as a whole. He has helped bring the sport to the masses who want to know more about his special personality and, of course, his huge talent for performing at the highest level across the globe. Dressage is now on a whole new level and is recognised by so many more people outside the sport than it has ever been.

If there is ever a spare moment, what do you enjoy doing to relax and recharge? Spare moments are few and far between, but my fiancé Dean and I do try and make time for a quick getaway or a nice meal out when we can. I also love taking my dogs for long walks in the Malvern Hills.

What are you looking forward to at Bolesworth this year? What makes it special? Bolesworth International is just spectacular and a very special show. For dressage to become a bigger part of the event is great news and the main arena is superb to ride and compete in with the castle as a backdrop. Fingers crossed, warmer weather is approaching, bringing with it the opportunity to enjoy some time outdoors. It’s perfect timing for the start of the polo season, writes Jan Clarke

he season gets underway in Chester with the LDF International Polo tournament on the 2-3 June, which invites guests to watch four teams battle for a £10,000 prize pot, and sponsors including LDF, LaurentPerrier and Stella Artois ensure the start of the season is a glamorous one and worthy of the game’s reputation as the ‘sport of kings’. Polo has long been recognised as the game of choice for millionaires and royalty. However, dig a little deeper and you’ll also find a sport which has a wider appeal than the traditional elitist image would suggest. It’s been said that polo is the fastest-growing spectator sport in the world. Now played in 80 countries across the globe, attracting crowds the size of which is usually the preserve of football games, surely, this is as it should be for the game which is believed to be the oldest team sport known to man. So no royal titles are required: just bring a picnic, bring your children, bring your enthusiasm and enjoy a great day out. The exact origins of polo are unknown, but it’s said to have first been played by Nordic warriors over 2,000 years ago. The first recorded polo tournament was played in 600BC in Persia (present-day Iran) and the Mogul conquerors of India then spread the game across the eastern world. The British were introduced to polo in India, in the late 19th century, and went on to

“The name polo is said to have derived from the Tibetan word ‘Pulu’ meaning, ball” establish the rules of the modern game with the very first polo club, The Calcutta Polo Club, founded by the British tea planters in 1862. In the UK, the sport is now governed by the Hurlingham Polo Association which was established in 1874 to implement and control the rules of the game. Cheshire is well known on the polo circuit, with the present-day Cheshire Polo Club being a successor of the Manchester Polo Club, the oldest club in England. The name ‘polo’ is said to have derived from the Tibetan word ‘pulu’ meaning ball; and with professional players sometimes known as ‘hired assassins’ and ponies reaching speeds of up to 35 mph, it's the ball you will be watching. For beginners like me, the object of the game is to put the ball between the goal posts using the mallet, which can only be used on the right side of the horse. The path of the ball is then known as the ‘right of way’. Players can hinder the opponent by blocking the shot with their mallet or by hooking their mallet around the opponent's to prevent them from hitting the ball. Play is divided into six periods of seven

minutes each, known as chukkas. It’s between every two chukkas that spectators are invited and encouraged to take part in the grand old tradition of ‘divot stomping’. Visitors to Chester have an extra incentive to get stomping with the addition of hidden treasure on the pitch – a silver cork and a fantastic prize. However, as they say, just beware of the ‘steaming’ divot! Back to the game. There are four players in each team and on average each player will play eight ponies in a match, so guests enjoy some serious horsemanship during a game. Charlie Walton, a regular at Chester, first started playing at the tender age of ten. For him it’s all about the horse. “It’s rare for me to go a day without riding. I spend a lot of time ensuring that my horses are well cared for. The health and happiness of the ponies is everything and makes your game better.” He continues, “Every tournament is memorable for different reasons but games at Chester are particularly enjoyable as there’s always a great atmosphere.” If you think it all sounds a bit too complicated, Chester provides an engaging commentator, talking the crowd through this face-paced game: the rules, etiquette and, of course, the teams, so everyone can enjoy the

match. And there's plenty to keep the young ones entertained, with pony pampering, storytelling and good old fashioned fun. In summary, to enjoy the polo a millionaire’s lifestyle is optional, binoculars may be helpful, friends and family – essential. LDF International Polo, 2-3 June 2017. March 30th saw one of Manchester’s most trailblazing artists taking London by storm once again, as his latest exhibition – Be Illuminated – opened its doors at the exclusive Lights of Soho members’ club in London’s West End. Originally from Blackpool, but recently opening his own design studio at Hope Mill in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, Roger Taylor (affectionately known as Papi) is a self-taught artist working with the medium of light to create incredible pieces of neon art, using traditional tools and methods to hand sculpt metal and form a fusion light and art. If you’ve heard the name, it’s likely thanks to his most famous piece, Wings, which took social media by storm when it was unveiled last year – and if you like what you see, the latest show is well worth a visit when you’re next down south (lightsofsoho.com)

inda’s exhausting schedule makes fascinating reading. “As a clarinet soloist I have to be up at 6am to practise before my day at the college even begins,” Linda laughingly explains. "As a woodwind player, regular practice is key, so the reality is a lot of early mornings! I enjoy performing but I also love teaching. However if we also have a concert in the evening, that can be a long day – although I wouldn’t change it for anything.” One of the few women in the country to become Principal of such a prestigious college, Linda’s keen to point out that the RNCM (The Royal Northern College for Music) is one of the world’s leading conservatoires, with a unique and distinctive mission in preparing students for a profession in music – past alumni include Amanda Roocroft, Rosalind Plowright, Peter Donohoe, Martin Roscoe and Alison Cox OBE. "We are really fortunate,” Linda adds, “that so many of our past students return to give masterclasses to our current students.” Bristol-born Linda studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where she met her husband, the composer Martin Ellerby, and moved to Manchester when she joined the

RNCM in 2001. Arriving as Director of performance studies and senior tutor in clarinet, she became Vice Principal in 2006. Linda has been acting Principal since July 2012 and was made Principal officially in 2013, when the college celebrated its 40th Anniversary. “Fortunately my husband is a composer, so he understands how important it is for me to rehearse regularly. It’s only during my holidays from college when I can tour and record my albums.” To date Linda has recorded more than 20 solo CD recordings, including new concertos by, among others, Gary Carpenter, Nigel Clarke, Kit Turnbull and Guy Woolfenden. Her chamber music output includes premiere recordings of four new clarinet quintets with the Navarra Quartet, a new clarinet quintet by John McCabe with the Kreutzer Quartet and Clarinet Quintets by Wilfred Joseph and Robert Crawford. With such a flourishing musical career, I wondered why Linda also wanted to take on board the challenging role of Principal. “I just love teaching,” was the enthusiastic response. “As a working musician, I can also give our students the benefit of my first-hand experience in coping with the performing side alongside the strict discipline of rehearsals. I also want our students to have a rounded life which will help them to be more fulfilled. ” Linda’s love of music started along with her natural aptitude.

“To the slight bewilderment of my parents, who were always totally supportive, I played the piano at six and classical guitar and recorder at eight. At secondary school – a large inner-city comprehensive – I wanted to play a wind instrument, but the only one available was a clarinet. I took it home, taught myself to play a bit, and started lessons. But we’d no idea I would end up as a soloist on the concert platform. “The Principal’s role is a very busy and challenging one, involving a lot of evenings and weekends, but I think it’s really important to remain a professional practitioner who is engaged actively in the music business.” Looking back over her time at the RNCM, is Linda proud of what she’s achieved so far? “The last three years have flown by, and hopefully I’ve further cemented the college as one of the world's leading conservatoires. Each year more than 400 students leave with work in place, and the college holds a unique position in the cultural life of the City of Manchester, which has such a rich tradition of popular music. “I’ve widened our musical range to encompass more populist music, not only with our brass band showcases, but also our masterclasses. This year, along with our operas, we also presented the musical Singing In The

“I want our students to have a rounded life which will help them to be more fulfilled” Rain, directed by Caroline Clegg, which demonstrated that not only do we teach music, but movement and theatre studies, too.” Linda operates an open-door policy at the college. “I think what makes the RNCM so special is its unique atmosphere, which is friendly and supportive, while providing a real-world experience for our students. With busy public performance venues on-site, they’re able to perform in front of live audiences and work with many professional musicians who visit us on a daily basis. Sir John Tomlinson, a past student, has even followed Sir Willard White as our President.” “My hopes for the rest of this year are that the RNCM will continue to be a contemporary, forward-looking conservatoire,” Linda concludes. “I see it as a place where students are treated as young professional musicians, challenged and supported to fulfil their musical potential. We provide the space to develop their work and creativity enabling them to forge successful careers in the music profession.” Never one to rest on her laurels, Linda is quick to praise her students. “I am proud of all our students, including the award-winners, and the college has recently been awarded our second Times Higher Education Award for Outstanding International Student Strategy. Now we’ll try to make it a hat-trick!”

Off the Wall From ski resorts in the Swiss Alps to classic automobiles, Pullman Editions’ Art Deco-style posters capture the glamour of a bygone era

T

he allure of heading off-piste in the Alps, or cruising the Côte d’Azur in a classic car will never fade. Glamorous destinations such as these, immortalised in travel posters from the ’20s and ’30s, are the inspiration behind Pullman Editions. Founded in 2010 by Georgina Khachadourian and her husband Simon, an art dealer and owner of Pullman Gallery in St James’s, Pullman Editions recreates travel posters in an Art Deco style for a contemporary audience. The idea for the business came about after Simon noticed a growing demand for vintage posters, which were fetching high prices at auction. “The Art Deco era has an enduring appeal,” explains Georgina. “It’s often associated with the golden age of travel and vintage posters capture that sentiment. We have updated the

concept, designing posters in the same style but with a more vibrant colour palette.” Created by house artist Charles Avalon, every poster is hand-painted to about half the size of the finished piece, then printed using traditional methods onto 100 per cent cotton paper before being signed and hand-numbered – each is available in a limited edition of just 280. The finished artworks, which cost £395, are then displayed in the Pullman Editions shop. There are currently 110 posters in the collection, spanning both ski and summer resorts and classic cars. Two of the most recent editions include a poster of supercars (a Lamborghini Aventador and a Porsche Spyder among others) in Knightsbridge, and another of a Maserati with the Italian Riviera in the background (above, left). Meanwhile, the current best sellers include the Val d’Isère Off-Piste Skier and L’Été sur la Côte d’Azur, depicting a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider on a quayside in the South of France (above, right). Pullman Editions caters for private commissions, too. “One of Charles Avalon’s specialities is cars and we get lots of requests from customers who want their car depicted in an artwork,” Georgina says. “We’re also creating a wedding poster this summer for a couple who want an Art Deco interpretation of their big day.” Also in the pipeline is a poster for the new film release of Murder on the Orient Express, directed by Kenneth Branagh. More than 83 years after Agatha Christie first published the detective novel, the story and the illustrious train continue to fuel the imagination – and this new Pullman Editions poster looks set to keep the intrigue alive a little longer still. n a recent trip to the fabulous Lonestar in Barbados, I met a group of discerning ex-pats who were enjoying the sun-drenched life most of us aspire to. Fresh sea food at their fingertips, chilled cocktails overlooking crystal clear oceans… and yet they missed Blighty! Fish and chips, cricket, PG Tips and even the weather. They all had a personal craving that just couldn’t be filled by an idyllic lifestyle and Barbadian rum alone; a nostalgia for Britain. We are a nation of inventors, farmers, entrepreneurs, designers, engineers, thespians, culinary magicians and more... A country brimming with eclectic talent, epitomised by the growing band of brave actors who venture to Hollywood and find stardom! One Direction has indeed taken British musical talent into the stratosphere. But our musical talent starts with amazing local schools, such as Chethams and the Royal Northern College of Music, and the British trait for perseverance… pursuing the dream. From Stella McCartney to Vivienne Westwood, Galliano to McQueen… cutting edge. The Beckhams to the Cambridges. Media royalty to British monarchy. Our sense of fair play and sporting excellence. Eccentricity and education. Cultural and ethnic diversity. Britishness is indeed a pick ‘n’ mix of talent, values and idiosyncrasy, and capturing this in one party is the ultimate challenge! My mantra has always been – if you can’t go to the event, bring the event to you, so we will:

Wheelbarrows filled with iced beers, cocktails served in miniature plant pots, English sparkling wines sipped from jam jars, vintage pots of traditional tea, delicate bite-sized cucumber and smoked salmon sandwiches… all outdoors on a summer afternoon, with a barber shop trio or string quartet playing. Bliss. Your idea of a ‘British’ party may be different from mine, but be inspired nonetheless by our nation. Britain certainly knows how to throw the best parties and is at the forefront of the event-planning world – so take up the challenge, get planning… and enjoy! (tlc-ltd.co.uk)

ighlighting David M Robinson’s trust in his loyal clientele, it was in fact a customer who suggested the moniker for the company’s latest collection, Journey. “The idea for the collection was to create a style that had a clearly defined beginning, middle and end, so the name is perfect,” explains managing director John Robinson. The new range comprises five unique contemporary ring styles which feature a sleek and dynamic single or double band, set with two drilling-cut diamonds on

either side. Customers can choose from 18-karat yellow, rose or white gold, with the choice of either the pave of plain band; John Robinson feels confident the rings are “sure to receive lots of compliments”. Indeed, since the collection’s launch, a number of clients have purchased the ring as a joint engagement and wedding band. appeal Faced with a turbulent economic climate, watchmaker’s are revisiting their back catalogues and reissuing rock-steady classics

Old School Chronographs Chronomaster Heritage 146, Zenith Arriving just before Baselworld, Zenith’s Chronomaster Heritage 146 acted as a precursor to the raft of retro revivals that we’d see at the world’s largest watch show. The big news here is that the modern Heritage 146 chronograph is now equipped with Zenith’s legendary El Primero movement – the first (1969) and still the most accurate series-produced automatic chronograph calibre.

Speedmaster Limited Edition, £5,360, Omega When the Speedmaster arrived in 1957, it was the first chronograph to feature a tachymeter scale on its bezel rather than printed on its dial. Sixty years later, one of Omega’s most recognisable models is reborn with the brand’s manual-wind 1861 movement, Super-LumiNova-coated indexes and a black ‘tropical’ dial. Only 3,557 pieces will be produced.

Autavia, TAG Heuer Last year, digital savvy TAG Heuer devotees voted for their favourite Autavia model from 16 first-generation pieces from the 1960s. The Autavia Ref 2446 Mark 3 – or ‘Rindt’ – won out and so this year makes a comeback to TAG’s collection. Today’s Autavia has been modernised by way of a larger 42mm case (previously 39mm) – Super-LumiNova-coated indexes and TAG’s latest, self-winding movement.

Retro Dive Watches Tribute to Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC, Blancpain

Hi-Beat 36000 Professional 600m Diver’s, Grand Seiko While this watch’s hobnail dial, highly-legible contrasting bezel and circular hour marks may hark back to the golden era of dive watch design, the Hi-Beat 36000 Professional 600m Diver’s is actually the first professional diver’s watch from Grand Seiko. It is equipped with a hi-beat automatic calibre (10 beats per second), a valve-free helium-resistant system and an anti-magnetic titanium case.

Arriving in 1953, Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms beat both the Rolex Submariner and the Omega Seamaster to become the world’s first bona-fide, series-produced dive watch. In 1957, the Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC 1 incorporated a circular water-tightness indicator at six o’clock that would turn from white to red should water penetrate the case. In 2017, the indicator returns, along with a unidirectional rotating bezel covered in scratch-resistant sapphire.

HyperChrome Captain Cook, Rado Think Rado and most likely something sleek, slim-line and ceramic will pop into your head. Back in 1962, however, the Swiss watchmaker unveiled the Captain Cook: a neat 37mm diver’s watch with oversized indexes and chunky arrowshaped hands. Playing tribute to that playful forebear, Rado has re-launched the model, choosing to stick with the original size and offering the watch with a similar brown vintage leather strap. The modern movement inside offers 80 hours of autonomy once fully wound.

ONE TO WATCH “The new models launched by Rolex at this year’s BaselWorld were particularly strong. The stand out piece for me would be the new Sky-Dweller with blue dial. Only made in solid gold before, it is now available in steel and white rolesor. It’s such a stunning timepiece that it is sure to become a future classic.” - Lee Chadwick, manager at David M Robinson’s Manchester showroom

Spring to Life

Ivy League The true power of nature has been brought to life in Boucheron’s latest high jewellery collection. Lierre de Paris, translated as ‘Paris Ivy’, explores Frédéric Boucheron’s fascination with nature, which began in 1858 when he opened his first jewellery boutique in the arcades of the Palais-Royal, where wild ivy veiled the buildings. This plant motif has since been featured time and time again in Boucheron’s collections and comes to life in seven new creations that make up Lierre de Paris, including the Question Mark necklace with nine ivy leaves in white gold and diamonds, which twines round the neck. It has also been depicted in a double-finger ring. Paris Ivy, POA (uk.boucheron.com)

Tie the Knot We were taught as children that insolence isn’t tolerated by society, but as adults, French jeweller Chaumet invites us to embrace our mischievous side with its new high and fine jewellery collection. Drawing on the traditional bow jewels loved by Marie Antoinette and the jewelled garlands of the Belle Époque, each piece presents the feminine bow-knot on the verge of being undone: a diamond ribbon loosely intertwined with a delicate rose gold rope, symbolising a romantic union. The hedonistic and contemporary nature of the collection has been captured in the campaign shot by American photographer Karen Collins. POA (chaumet.com)

The arrival of spring sees a new line of floral jewels unfurl from Van Cleef & Arpels. The jeweller has reworked its classic Frivole collection to include nine additional pieces, introducing new styles and variations of the original design. Stud earrings in yellow or white gold with diamonds make their debut in the collection, as does a chain bracelet adorned with a single floral motif, also available in yellow and white gold. For a full bouquet, there’s the three-dimensional eight-flower ring in yellow gold (evoking the style of the 1950s), featuring white diamonds in the centre of each petal. From £1,400 for the Frivole bracelet to £18,500 for the between-the-finger ring (vancleefarpels.com)

Pig in the Sky Even Tessa Packard will admit that she may have been in a slightly odd mood when designing her latest collection. And when one considers that new pieces include ceramic pigs suspended from earrings and swinging bats hand-carved in buffalo bone, you can well believe it. But, as is always the case with the British jeweller, there was method in her madness. Packard was inspired by the Victorian curiosity cabinet, taxidermy and the work of artist Joseph Cornell to create her most eclectic range to date. “I really wanted to push the boat out and bring together materials and ideas that I’d collected over the past four years, but that had never quite made it into a collection,” she comments. By allowing her imagination to run wild, Tessa Packard has truly found her feet as a designer. From £325 to £14,000 (tessapackard.com)

Easy

Glamour Our cover girl, photographer and model, Helena Christensen, chats to Louisa Castle about easy glamour, naked trees and social media

69

You fell in love working as a photographer – what fascinates you the most about photography? I have been taking photos for a very long time and I think since my late teens there’s just been something about it that has really captured my imagination. Because when you photograph, you can shoot anything. There are no limits. It’s what you see with your eye. It’s basically life, looked upon through a very small little lens. You look at it with your eyes, the way you see the world, and I think it is so magical that you can freeze a moment in time and have it forever.

Do you have any favourite scenes? In nature, always. I love nature. I love trees in the wintertime. Naked trees. Also waves in the ocean. But portraits, of course, are always fascinating, too.

Would you tell us your source of inspiration for photography? Basically everything. Nature, people, movies, books. You get a lot of inspiration looking through art books and watching old movies. I watched The Great Beauty lately. You can almost freeze-frame every shot and you get an incredible image. So movies are definitely inspirational too, for me.

Which piece of clothing cannot be missing in your closet and will always be in your suitcase? I really like oversized sweatshirts. Especially if they are a little longer so you can use them almost as a one-piece. And they are so soft, and once they have been washed many times, it just literally feels like you're not wearing anything, it’s so cuddly.

What attracted you to become Airfield's latest collection? I saw their campaign pictures and I really liked them. I also thought the clothes looked fresh and modern. And the chance of coming to Austria to work with this team was a really nice opportunity for me.

“The Airfield woman is a woman who likes adventure, lives 70

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Style

There's a huge trend for easy glamour – what does it mean for you? Glamour can be so many things. It can be someone who effortlessly looks elegant in whatever they throw on. Or it can be an old lady in a beautiful dress with her hair done up, lots of jewellery. When you look at the red carpet for the Oscars, it’s obviously extremely glamorous. But it can also just be a woman at the beach wearing a scarf as a dress and that, too, can be extremely glamorous.

Facebook and Instagram – what opportunities do these social media platforms offer you and how do you use them? I only went on Instagram two months ago, for the first time ever. I’m not on Facebook. For me it’s just a platform to show personal visuals from my life, but mainly photography and art. You can convey your mood and your feelings through photography. I am still not completely used to the whole world looking at it, not just your friends and family.

Who do you follow?

What do you expect from a good fashion collection? That it’s versatile. That you can layer all the pieces and that it’s comfortable to wear is always great. Along with some interesting details: I’m really into the details in clothes. That it has beautiful and colourful prints. Every day just wearing black suits is boring. I really like that Airfield has beautiful flower prints that you can combine with some basic colours. I also like if there is a masculine sporty element to a collection, even if it’s feminine, and this collection has that. The Airfield woman is a woman who likes adventure, lives her life as a free spirit and approaches life with curiosity.

I follow my friends and people who I think take interesting photos that captivate me. I follow Cern because I’m very interested in that whole scientific background of that and all their incredible technologies behind it. And of course the Magnum Photographers, because I love photography.

What kinds of people inspire you, and do you have any role models? I have no particular role models but once in a while you meet someone or walk past someone on the street who inspires you. But I think it’s important that you are true to yourself and you dress the way you feel like dressing, and develop your personal style. It shows that this woman follows her own instinct and knows what suits her. I like when women dress up in a unique way with lots of colours. (airfield-onlineshop.com)

A Little Different Hidden away in a boutique barn conversion in Ashton Hayes is a little gem called Olivia May. More showroom than high street store, the focus is on unique and niche designers and creating an individual look just for you

T

he lady behind Olivia May is Ann Whorrall, who has been styling private clients for years. With a store in Oxfordshire, the Ashton Hayes showroom is the second successful extension of the brand after the online shop and magazine. And one that is closer to home. “Clothes transform people,” begins Ann. “Sometimes they can be better than a face lift,

believe me. They can transform how and what you are communicating. The most amazing part of what we do is seeing that transformation, as people go home with that bit more confidence. “Our range is niche and is not what you will find in a typical high street store. We focus on the individual so we want to be able to offer something a little different, slightly unconventional. So, we have lines which are for those just dipping their toes in the water and for people who want to make a statement. “Indeed, that's one of the first questions that we ask a client: Are you looking for softer shapes or bolder styling? Which designers inspire you? Whichever our customer is looking for, we do not compromise on the quality. We know our designers and understand the stories behind pieces, the thought which goes into choosing a fabric to support the architecture of the item, the cut and wearability. “We stock a selection of sizes but can get more in 24 hours from our Oxford boutique, which holds hundreds of pieces. Also, there's a move, more and more, to one size which, whilst the Italians are struggling to get to grips with it, our designers are embracing. This is much needed news for those of us with curves. “We want people to wear our clothes, not just leave them hanging in a wardrobe. You can tell when you've got it right from the expression on clients' faces. It's understanding what the client is looking for rather than what you would instinctively dress them in. Most people do come to us asking for something different, that says something about them and sets them apart. We are all different, after all!

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Promotion

“My mum used to be able to put the most amazing outfits together and get things to work, so I have developed that passion from her, I think. But we all contribute across the team and come up with some amazing outfits.” By ‘team’ Ann is referring to Naomi, Kerry, Holly and Clare, not to mention the team she has in Oxford. “It's hard to have a career in fashion outside

London. All of the team here in Cheshire have great creative degrees, experience and passion. We also collaborate with milliners (as you can see from our shoot), jewellers and shoe tailors but they have to have that individuality, quality and passion which matches our ethos.” Olivia May, Ashton Hayes showroom is open Thursday and Friday, 10:00am to 4:00pm or any other day by appointment (01829 751600; oliviamay.org)

REVIEW CARDEN PARK MEN’S SPA DAY W or d s : M A T T B R I N D L E Y

A

fter a week of lunches, launches and late nights a visit to Carden Park set is the depth of the Cheshire countryside couldn’t have come sooner. I had booked in for the Men’s Suave & Sophisticated day which includes a bamboo full body message, a stress buster facial and a scalp message. After entering the spa I was shown around all of the fabulous facilities which had all just benefitted from a generous refurbishment. I had a particular eye on the hyrdrotherapy pool but that would be for another visit. After being robed, I was ready to go for my first treatment; The bamboo massage. It may sound like it has hints of the Turkish baths, where you are beaten with birch or eucalyptus but, fear not (thank goodness!) it was far from it. Silky bamboo canes are used with a powerful massage technique to relieve stress, strengthen muscles and reactivate circulation. And it had the desired effect. As an avid gym-goer this was just what was needed to target all my tight muscles. Due

to the unique distribution of pressure while using the bamboo I felt that all my aches and pains had been targeted and my knots banished. After a short break in the relaxation room it was time for my stress-buster facial – a deep cleansing facial treatment aimed at reviving and refreshing the appearance of your complexation using only highest quality ESPA Products. This was followed by the scalp massage. Charlotte, my therapist, worked her magic. My skin felt smooth, supple and replenished and even

recommended several products that could maintain the effect for as long as possible. Refreshed, I then enjoyed a light lunch - a healthy chicken Caesar salad with a well-deserved glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Once settled, the lure of the pool was too much so I then ended my day with a dip in the hydrotherapy pool and a twenty minute session the sauna. Delightful. Sauve & Sophisticated includes Bamboo Full Body Massage, Scalp Massage and Gentleman’s Stress Buster Facial, from £115. (cardenpark.co.uk)

he popularity of hybrid and electric cars continues to grow. With an estimated two million cars already on the road, sales last year were up by 23 per cent. Furthermore, the ‘entry-level’ Tesla Model 3, costing about £30,000, has already received almost 400,000 pre-orders. In the UK, the Chancellor of the Exchequer gave the industry a boost when he announced that the government will invest £390 million by 2020-21 to support ultra-low emission vehicles, renewable fuels and self-driving cars. From the end of March 2019, the government will also offer 100 per cent first-year allowances to companies investing in charge-points for electric vehicles. I was recently invited to test drive a Tesla Model S and experience for myself some of the technology being made available: including the autonomous driving setting, which allows the car to break at safe distances and change lanes, and the much-publicised ‘ludicrous’ mode that, when engaged, enables 0-60mph in just 2.8 seconds. Opportunities to invest in electric vehicles are opening up, and include traditional companies. The limitations that many associate with electric cars – range, recharging and affordability – are slowly but surely being resolved as a result of huge investment by the auto industry. Tesla’s construction of a battery ‘gigafactory’, which will double the world’s lithium i-on battery capacity, is just one example of this.

80

With battery technology improving by leaps and bounds, competition will be fierce. VW has plans to build 2-3 million all-electric cars a year, ; Daimler, owner of Mercedes-Benz, recently announced a new $11 billion investment that will enable 25 per cent of its output to be electric; BMW, General Motors and Nissan, among others, are all investing in electronic vehicle production; and the Chinese, too, are increasingly competitive in this space. The future looks bright for electric vehicles. However, they still represent a relatively small percentage of overall vehicle sales, and this should be borne in mind when it comes to investing in this sector. With new entrants continuing to join this exciting new market, it is essential to identify those who will drive innovation, stay the distance and do so profitably. It is also worth widening your scope to consider businesses associated with the manufacture of both hardware components and software for the electric vehicle sector. (quiltercheviot.com) Making the right investment decisions takes skill, resources and experience. At Quilter Cheviot you will find all three in abundance, and it’s why we have been managing money for over ten generations. This means that for your lifetime, and for generations to come, there is only one investment decision you need to make. F

or those seeking an unforgettable trip, Silversea, founded in the 1990s, recipient of the USA’s Global Traveler 2016 Leisure Travel Award for ‘best luxury cruise line’ and a Condé Nast Traveler 2015 award for food in the ‘world’s best small cruise ship’ category, offers a voyage like no other. This Italian, family owned business features a fleet of eight small ships and provides exceptional standards of service and comfort. Embarking at Piraeus, Athens, along with our bulging suitcases, my mother and I were enchanted with our first view of the sleek lines of the Silver Spirit, which carries 540 passengers, served by a dedicated crew of 376. The simple and efficient check-in procedures ensured that no time was wasted and we were promptly escorted to our spacious suite, sumptuously furnished with a plump sofa, two leather tub chairs, soft carpeting and comfortable beds swathed in crisp white linens and soft feather-filled pillows. We took a moment to relax on our private veranda, admiring the view across the glittering ocean, and our charming butler arrived. Graciously introducing himself, he poured two

glasses of chilled Champagne with a flourish, and presented us with a selection of Bvlgari and Salvatore Ferragamo toiletries. He then requested our preferences for keeping the fridge fully stocked with complimentary soft drinks, wines and spirits, and the contents of our fruit basket.

“We took a moment to relax on our private veranda, admiring the view across the glittering ocean” The luggage was swiftly delivered, and while our new-found butler unpacked, we headed for the deck to watch ‘anchors aweigh’ as we sailed sedately on the sparkling waters of the Aegean, bound for Santorini, Rhodes, Aghios Nikolaos, Katakolon, Argostoli, Corfu, Dubrovnik and Venice. The Silver Spirit offers eight passenger decks, with interiors adorned with an imposing art

85

collection including works by Rembrandt, Chagal and Picasso and several Salvador Dali sculptures. The decor follows modern and Art Deco themes with a soothing palette of colours. There are several lavishly furnished bars including the Panorama Lounge where Amedeo, an excellent pianist, performs and he entices passengers onto the dance floor with ease. Other socialising spots include the Connoisseur’s Corner, a clubby cigar-andCognac lounge where guests are welcome to relax in low-slung leather chairs and enjoy their preferred cigar, fine liquers, and a selection of the world’s finest caviar. With no shortage of on-board dining venues, we took advantage of the open seating option offered by the ship’s main dining room, The Restaurant, which serves modern Mediterranean and regional dishes.

“The pool deck features an impressive swimming pool with three bubbling Jacuzzis” Up with the larks the following morning and our ship had docked in Santorini, which was a dazzling sight from our veranda. After a delicious in-suite breakfast, served by our butler with much aplomb, we hurried off the ship to explore our first port of call. Back on board in time for luncheon, we dined in La Terrazza, which offers a buffet-style extravaganza. The desserts just cannot be ignored. We dined ‘al fresco’ on the back deck, cool in the shade of the overhead canopy, and then an afternoon snooze in the sunshine was just the ticket. For water babes, the pool deck features an impressive swimming pool with three bubbling Jacuzzis surrounded by ultra-comfortable sun loungers, and the pool bar and grill serves light fare for luncheon. After a pre-dinner tipple on our veranda we made our way to dinner in the Stars Supper Club: a retro experience, which recalls the

romance and opulence of Manhattan’s legendary Rainbow Room. Delectable small plate selections are served while guests are entertained by the live jazz band and a cabaret vocalist. And in the likely event that diners are overwhelmed with the desire to display their nifty footwork on the dance floor mid-course, the food remains at the right temperature. Other dining options include Le Champagne, the only Relais & Châteaux restaurant at sea, which features a small walk-in wine room. For fans of Asian fusion cuisine, Seishin offers sampler menus or a nine-course degustation and, by night, La Terrazza, presents a wide range of authentic Italian dishes. For those seeking the utmost privacy, there is the option of in-suite dining, selecting dishes, course by course, from The Restaurant menu, or from the room service menu, available around the clock. Entertainment choices include the Show Lounge, which presented a striking performance by four soloists and a pianist from Milan’s Accademia Teatro alla Scala. Another highlight of the cruise was a performance by Moss Hills, the talented cruise director. A first rate entertainer and a master drummer, guitarist, saxophonist, keyboard player and singer, he soon had the audience singing along to his repertoire and some took to their feet in the aisles with fervour. For those keen on activities, a daily programme is delivered to each stateroom with details of events held during the day. But for those of us with a passion for doing as little as possible, the Spa is the place to be. Or, you may prefer to select a good book from the ship’s library, sink into one of the chairs in the Observation Lounge and, while admiring the view of the ocean blue over the ship’s bow, you may recall the words of Mark Twain who once said; ‘twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than those you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbour. Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover’. (silversea.com; 0844 251 0837).

Weekend away … Dukes Hotel, London WORDS: LOUISA CASTLE

R

egular visitors to London will have their favourite hotels: for business, for pleasure, for escape. Ours is the very British bolthole of DUKES London. Tucked away in the heart of Mayfair, this 90-room, world-leading classic hotel (according to the World Travel Awards 2016 for the last five years) welcomes us with just the right amount of familiarity and professionalism. Travelling alone on business, I enjoy a Duchess room with Beditation Butler service. Having travelled through London, via the Canary Wharf and Mayfair office, I am ready for a little me-time, whether that’s a quiet table in the restaurant, cocktail at the bar (said to have inspired Ian Fleming for James Bond’s signature martini) with the ever-charming barman Alessandro, or a herbal tea in my living room. The hotel is nestled away in a cobbled courtyard, so I tend to relax as soon as I am welcomed through the door. Nevertheless, on my last visit I was delighted to hear that The Beditation Butler mindful room service was now in full swing, including a selection of handmade

herbal teas, a bath drawn with relaxing Floris London bath essences and in-room podcasts and playlists to encourage meditation before curling up in the sumptuous bed with DUKESY, the toy sausage dog, beside you. And better still, as part of the package (£45) you also get a DUKES Floris London candle to take home. Sometimes it’s little extra touches that count. Speaking of sausage dogs, there’s another new package we are looking to try out – this time one for the four-legged VIPs. From just £25 extra per night per dog (under 24kg), four-legged friends are welcomed by the hotel’s own dedicated concierge team, and benefit from their own doggy menu and luxurious bed in your room, also with turndown and dental bedtime treat. You can also use 24-hour dog sitting and dog walking, personal shopping or grooming. The hotel has also just had a multi-million pound refurbishment, including a first-of-itskind collaboration with iconic Liberty fabrics, so I am looking forward to returning this summer to see it in all its refurbished glory. ...with Gary usher, Chef at Sticky Walnut, Burnt Truffle and Hispi what is your favourite ingredient? Definitely butter. You’ll make a dish that tastes alright, but add butter and it tastes twice as good. Not just that, I love the fact it’s unashamedly naughty. We go through hundreds of blocks in the restaurants every month. No regrets. what is your favourite food? I love the juxtaposition of having a curry after service. We recreate classic British, French and Italian-style dishes in the resaurants to deliver a bigger, bolder alternative, but I’m tasting these flavours all day, every day. A curry takes me out of that zone and into a different world of flavour. what is your desert island recipe? I honestly just love fruit and cream, so it has to be barbequed pineapple and whipped cream. It’s such a simple recipe but the caramelised pineapple paired with the cream tastes amazing. All I do is barbeque the pineapple, whip the cream and that’s it. what is your favourite piece of kitchen kit? It’s not specific to the kitchen, but I couldn’t live without my phone. Twitter has been responsible

for many stages of the development of the restaurants over the years. I’ve recruited nearly all my staff members through it and nicked a few recipes along the way too! Also, everyone knows I also can’t resist a blow torch – just watch the Wreckfish [Gary’s proposed fourth site, in Liverpool] Kickstarter video and you’ll see how deep my addiction goes… Help crowdfund Gary’s fourth restaurant at wreckfish.co

SPOTLIGHT ON... NORTHCOTE MANOR W o r ds : L O U I S a C A S T L E

T

he last time I ate at Northcote Manor was over eight years ago, before the extended kitchens, cookery school and before the new lodge. This was our Friday night treat. Around 40 minutes in the car from Hale, I forgot how much of a world apart this place is, with views of hills and farms. Most of all I was looking forward to the food. We were booked into one of the Garden Lodge rooms, intending to add the wine flight to our gourmet menu. Spacious and stylish ours boasted a balcony and impressive bathroom with huge bath for soaking and his and hers showers. I could see this being a great place to return to after forays into the Ribble Valley. But this time we were here for the food. Michelin-star chef patron, Nigel Haworth and executive head chef, Lisa Goodwin-Allen prepare a five-course monthly gourmet menu from the best seasonal and local produce. After a glass of Champagne in the bar, accompanied by a selection of canapés, we were seated in the restaurant, with views of the setting sun. Now, the first thing I would like to say is that the team who looked after us so excellently, coping with my many questions so well, are professional yet friendly. It’s beautiful and etiquette-ically correct but there wasn’t a hint of starchiness. Indeed, that Friday night, the restaurant was full of people who enjoyed good food. Pure and simple. And so to our menu. Aged MT. Grace Farm Wagyu Beef Tartare, Sticky Rice with Whispering Angel, Caves d’Esclans, Cotes de Provence, 2015; Orkney Scallop, Dashi, Seaweed with Albarino Bodegas Terras Gauda, O Rosal, Rias Baixas,

92

Galicia, 2015; White Beetroot, Coconut, White Chocolate with Polish Hill Riesling, Grosset, Clare Valley, 2015; Wild Venison, Liquorice Mole, Kolhrabi with Le Cigare Volant, Bonny Doon, Santa Cruz, 2011; and Lemon Meringue Pie accompanied by Moscato d’Asti, Pio Cesare, Piedmont, 2015. Superlatives abounded – from the parfait amuse-bouche served on edible soil (we chose not to) to the sashimi scallop and beyond. The words on the menu didn’t capture the tastes and journey we went on. For example, the Wagyu was so tender it really did melt in your mouth. I may have used this analogy in the past, but now I know what it really means. Dishes are presented with the latest culinary progression, smoke revealing cloches and granita goat’s cheese but stop just this side of unnecessary. And whilst it’s all about flavour, it is also about texture. As a wordsmith I have submitted to the fact that I will fail in my attempt to describe it with anything that approaches accurate. I would hate to do it disservice. Gourmet menu, £70, wine flight from £58. Gourmet Break (luxury room or suite and five-course Gourmet Menu) from £375 per couple. (northcote.com)

Flavour by Fazenda Close to Chester’s city gates on Newgate Street, you will find Picanha by Fazenda, the go-to place for steak lovers

B

rought to Chester by the Fazenda group of restaurants, Picanha takes its name from the celebrated Brazilian cut of meat famed for its succulent texture and exceptional flavour. The founders have worked hard to bring tradition and the love of their culture to the UK. Nurturing a driven passion for exquisite meats, premium wines and authenticity, they have established themselves as one of the leading restaurant operators in South American cuisine, in the country. Picanha is their latest offering and offers gaúcho-style grilling in an intimate setting. Keeping with their Brazilian roots, Picanha welcomes diners to indulge in a traditional rodizio, a high-end dining experience found in the cosmopolitan cities of Brazil. This continuous service of ten cuts of meat, perfectly grilled and carved at the table, is accompanied by gourmet salads and carefully selected wines. Along with the infamous Picanha, the rodizio offers a mouth-watering selection of cuts, from the marbled rib-eye, Bife Ancho to Tri-Tip, the bottom sirloin with its great flavour and texture. In addition, guests can also enjoy chicken, pork and lamb dishes. The Sobrecoxa de Frango

marinated chicken thighs are grilled to perfection, then there's Linguica Gaucha, the Brazilian sausage which complements the flavours of the rest of the meats on offer. Dining at Picanha truly brings to life the century-old tradition of the Gaúchos and their open flame grilling techniques, while adding modern sophistication, all served with South American warmth. For Brazilians life is about sharing, so don’t worry if meat is not your thing, there are still plenty of dishes to go around. In addition to the gourmet salads, Picanha offers an array of vegetarian and fish dishes, including the Moqueca vegan stew, pumpkin and blue cheese risotto and cod fritters with garlic gnocchi. Picanha is a unique concept which embraces everything the original Fazenda restaurants offer. They have carefully blended their gaúcho churrasco techniques with the rodizio experience loved by the weekend city crowd and yet served this up in an intimate setting. The lunch menu at Picanha is £17.50, dinner is £27.50 with children’s prices ranging from £6-£10. Un

The smell of cut grass, the sight of cloudless skies and the sound of birds singing tells me summer has arrived, and as I write, Anji is busy making real lemonade to take to the farm. Anji spent all her childhood and teenage years at the stables, and was lucky to own two beautiful horses named Lucy and Seamus, each having their own unique personality. Looking after and competing with them was her whole life, so I was not at all surprised when we were sent an invitation to Bolesworth Castle, two miles from village of Tattenhall, to attend The Equerry Bolesworth International Show. I have it straight from the horse’s mouth that the best names in show jumping and dressage will be heading through the gates during the five-day family event, which takes place from the 14-18th June, and I am honoured to be going along, too. The event even plans to offer a free Educational and Fun School Day, giving children the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a top-class sporting event. Packed with lots of educational and fun activities taking place around the show ground, last year’s School Day was a huge success, with over 800 children coming along. Dogs are welcome at the show, too, and there is even a dog-friendly zone where my furry friends can enter the Companion Dog Show or the ‘have a go’ agility course, held on both Saturday and Sunday of the show weekend. The stunning lake stretching out in front of Bolesworth Castle will be transformed into a world-class Wakeboard Park, and will even be hosting a leg of the International ProWakeboard Tour. If you’re tempted to take the plunge yourself, there’ll be ‘have a go’ wakeboard, paddle boarding, kayaking and water zorbing sessions, too. Anji is definitely up for the zorbing challenge, but I’ve decided to leave that to the children and professionals so as not ruin my fur for the VIP area. Children will be entertained with a vintage fairground, plus a full range of attractions including a climbing wall, inflatables, paddle boarding and more. So that’s Aston and Anji sorted, meaning I can spend the day basking in the sunshine and watching the showjumping until the day draws to an end, when we’ll all head over to the Bolesworth Bistro, where dinner is served, followed by DJ and fully licensed bar till late. I can’t wait. Until next time, Love & licks

Taking Tech Outdoors Springfree Trampolines has come up with a genius, pioneering way of prizing your kids off the sofa and away from the iPad this summer – and you might just be tempted to get in on the action, too

T

rampolines have come a long way since the days of bruises and rusty springs – but no 21st-century incarnation of this well-loved outdoor toy has surpassed the trailblazing antics of Springfree Trampolines. In the mid-90s founder and engineer Dr Keith Alexander, embarked on a mission to find a safe trampoline for his children and in 2003, with the help of fellow dad, Steve Holmes, the revolutionary design of the Springfree was born. Satisfied that they had eliminated the majority of risks associated with traditional trampoline trampolines, the first Springfree Trampoline was sold in New Zealand and the business began its global journey. This innovation involved replacing the springs with rods, creating the revolutionary SoftEdge™ system, developing a strong flexible safety net that would stand up to all kinds of weather, and moving the frame below the jumping surface, making it impossible to fall on. With these crucial changes, and every component made from the highest-quality materials then rigorously tested, the safest trampoline on the market was born. As if this wasn’t innovative enough, now they’ve gone a step further – integrating a digitally interactive game system into each of their seven models, with the express intention of drawing kids away from the sofa and out into the fresh air. The idea is a simple one. The games system, Tgoma, incorporates specialised sensor technology into the trampoline. This technology connects via Bluetooth directly with your tablet, then all you have to do is download the free Tgoma App to access a whole range of activities,

each one designed to engage the entire family and including educational games, interactive fitness options and garden play, as well as allowing players to participate in worldwide competitions and compare their high scores with friends, family and players all over the world. Currently available exclusively for Springfree Trampolines, Tgoma is the world’s first outdoor interactive digital game system and aims to address a key area of concern among parents all over the country – and, indeed, the world: how to get kids outside and active while keeping them safe. With recent studies showing that each week most children spend as many as 60 hours consuming media and only an average of 60 minutes playing outside, Tgoma aims to combine our little ones’ passion for interactive games and competition with their unfulfilled need for physical activity and fresh air. Their ethos is that, instead of fighting technology, we should be looking at ways to harness and transform it from a static, isolated activity to a healthy, engaging experience for young and old alike.

“The ethos is that, instead of fighting technology, we 110

But, for health-conscious parents, the best thing about this new breed of trampoline is that – not only does it provide a fantastic means of luring your family outdoors and getting them active – it also doubles up as your very own home gym (if you can get the kids off it for five minutes). In fact, though you might know that jumping on a trampoline is a good source of exercise, you might be surprised to realise just how good – with a ten-minute session adding up to the equivalent of a 30-minute run, increasing your heart rate, providing a moderate-to-high aerobic workout, improving the body’s lymphatic drainage system and developing muscle strength. Springfree has eight ‘bounce sites’ across the country – including one at the Wilmslow Garden Centre – allowing you and your family to try out each of the seven different models (which range from 8ft Round to the Jumbo 13ft sq) to see which one works best for you. If you’re really serious about creating a play haven in your back garden this summer, you could even include a Rainbow Play climbing frame, too – each one made entirely from beautiful, high-quality Redwood, available in a range of

designs and cleverly constructed for your children to grow in-to (and not out of). One simple way to get the kids outdoors, the family playing together and your personal fitness in check? Well, we’re convinced. Wilmslow Garden Centre, 145 Manchester Road, Wilmslow, SK9 2JN (01625 525909; 01276 477461; springfreetrampoline.co.uk)

What are the numbers? As of April 2017, the new inheritance tax (IHT) rules have come into force, but what do they mean? Tristan Hartey explains

A

s it stands, each person in the UK has a Nil Rate Band (NRB). The NRB is the amount that you have within your estate before you pay any inheritance tax. For any type of asset the first £325,000 within your estate is tax free; anything over this is taxed at 40 per cent. However, you will have heard that the rate is going up. This is partially true: as of April each person now has an additional band of inheritance tax relief. This is known as the Residential Nil Rate Band (RNRB). This means that each person has an additional £100,000 that can be applied to their family home provided they are passing it down to their children. Each year this new RNRB will increase by £25,000 until 2020/21. At that time, everyone will be entitled to a £500,000 NRB, provided that their assets are set out in the right way and are being passed down the family. If someone

is married or in a civil partnership you combine their NRBs to give you the advertised £1 million that the government has pledged within their manifesto. Vitally, when it comes to paying inheritance tax, no tax is due until both people in the marriage have passed away. However, it is important to note that the new RNRB tapers off on estates worth more than £2 million. Additionally, if you do not leave your family home to direct descendants you may not be eligible for the additional RNRB. Finally, the NRB of £325,000 is fixed until 2020/21. There are a number of solutions to help protect your estate. However, before you can start, you need to know what your liability is; therefore we advise seeking professional advice. For more information please call 0808 168 5866. We have also created a comprehensive guide on the new RNRB rules, so if you are interested in a copy, please get in touch and we will send you one.

A tailored approach to mortgages W OR D S : C r i s p i n H a r r i s M RICS

A

ccording to the Department for Business, Energy and Industry Strategy in its recent ‘Business Population estimate for the UK and regions 2016’, the north west is home to 521,795 registered businesses. In total, 245,000 of these are VAT or PAYE registered: that’s a whole lot of entrepreneurs running businesses – and business owners need mortgages, too. Thankfully, the Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association noted in April that there had been a marked improvement in lending to self-employed individuals. However, the path to a mortgage for a business owner can be fraught with difficulty, and that’s why working with an expert mortgage broker is essential. If you’re a business owner, entrepreneur or professional, navigating the mortgage market on your own can be frustrating. Even with great earning potential, it can be difficult to find a lender who’ll give you full credit for your financial position and steadily increasing income curve. With the help of an expert broker, a bespoke mortgage solution from either a high-street lender via their senior underwriters, or from the lending arm of a private bank, may be achievable. These mortgage solutions are not usually available to borrowers who approach lenders directly, with many lenders operating a ‘computer says no’ approach. If you don’t fit their standard criteria, you may fall through the cracks. This is where a good mortgage broker can draw upon a network of contacts across the lending industry to find a solution that fits your needs. Your mortgage should complement your financial planning strategies, and a good broker will also make sure that your facilities are delivered on competitive terms. Guidance should be provided on how the mortgage is to be structured, such as a capital and interest ‘repayment’ mortgage, interest-only or a ‘bullet’ style. Advice on interest rate choices will help you decide between the various periods of fixed rates, trackers, discounts and caps. If you’re looking for a bespoke mortgage it’s wise to speak to your estate agent, as they should be able to signpost you to a reputable mortgage broker. We’re always happy to advise on mortgage issues, and work closely with a team of reputable brokers.

White Stripes British designer Lee Broom has collaborated with Wedgwood to create a capsule collection of limited edition bowls and vases. Arriving as part of Harrods’ Art Partner’s initiative, which launched in April, Broom (who is marking his company’s 10th anniversary this year) has put his own contemporary spin on a selection of Wedgwood’s classic Jasperware pieces that he grew up admiring. A limited number of items are available to buy exclusively at Harrods from April, including a black-and-white striped panther vase, which is at the core of the collection. From £7,500 (harrods.com)

INTERIORS INSPIRATION

First Place As leading interior architect Tara Bernerd launches Place, a new book with Rizzoli, the designer tells Ellen Millard about her inspirations, the secret to a good hotel and celebrating 15 years in business

A

gatha Christie famously required a bathtub and a bag of apples to pen her whodunits; Mark Twain favoured a remote cabin in California; and Jack Kerouac, Thomas Wolfe and Dylan Thomas would hole up in New York’s now closed Hotel Chelsea. The writing caverns of the world’s best wordsmiths are particular at best, but none hold a candle to the 15,000 sq ft island retreat that interior architect Tara Bernerd fashioned for one of her author clients recently. Located in Mallorca, the sandstone build boasts unrivalled views over the bay of Palma, best seen through a floor-to-ceiling window that stretches the length of the client’s study, in front of which the author has studiously placed his writing desk. The villa is one of many featured in the designer’s new book, Tara Bernerd: Place, a retrospective and nostalgic look at some of her and her team’s best work over the past 15 years, ranging from a penthouse in Westminster and a yacht in Istanbul, to a collection of lodges and tree houses for Center Parcs. For Bernerd and her team, it was a chance to pause and reflect on what they have achieved.

126

“It was so interesting to look back at the past 15 years; it was a great reminder of the body of work that we have done,” she tells me. “Through imagery and personal instinct we took a selection from each part of our journey, and had to be a bit ruthless about some of the others.” A protégé of Philippe Starck – with whom she worked at the YOO Studio during the ’90s – the designer established her own company, Tara

Homes and Interiors

Bernerd & Partners, in 2002, and quickly gained a reputation for her sleek eye for interior architecture, which has transformed lofty towers and cavernous penthouses into slick spaces for private clients, hoteliers and developers. Her USP is ‘a home from home’, crafting hotels and yachts into comfortable spaces to retire to. “Hotels are very much our main focus, but we feel very attuned to that marriage of the residential feel within a building that so many people enjoy,” Bernerd explains. “In a sense, hotels are the lifestyle homes of today. We understand the philosophy of what might be a beautiful bedroom in someone’s house, but instead there are 200 of them – and what might be a marvellous study may become a lounge or bar in a hotel.” The name of her new book, Place, stems from her desire to produce contemporary projects without infringing on the local area. For instance, the Mallorca-based villa comprises materials used on the island, while a chalet in Gstaad features grey quartzite extracted from a nearby quarry. “When we’re in a place, our aim is to be very indigenous and to bring out what the area demands, what the local neighbourhood might want from it and what the client is looking for,” Bernerd says. “Each project has its own life and its own DNA.” Travel and hospitality design has been an interest of Bernerd’s ever since she was a child. As the daughter of property developer Elliott Bernerd, a passion for high-quality service was instilled in her from a young age and she recognised early on in her career

that the design of a building is just the beginning of a hotel’s road to success. “I was very fortunate to be able to travel a lot as a girl. I was always so interested in the hotels and these different worlds that we went into,” she tells me. “When we are designing, I think what inspires me is that you’re creating an atmosphere. It’s not just about wall finishes and different trends, it’s about layer upon layer of decisions and how, after each one is applied, you are creating an atmosphere that will make people want to return. That’s something that still intrigues me today.”

“What inspires me is that you are making an atmosphere – it’s not just about wall finishes” Although she admits that she’s “not great with favourites”, she praises the Belmond group for having “some of the most beautiful hotels” and staff members who “are such characters”. Her stand-out hotspots include the Belmond Hotel Caruso in Italy’s Ravello (“it’s so beautiful and so tasteful”), and The Mercer in New York (“I can still walk in and think ‘wow’. When André Balazs first did that hotel with Christian Liaigre it was so cool... and it still is”). She also has a soft spot for Claridge’s, where she likes to meet her mother for lunch. Of her own projects, the ones that she recalls most fondly are Sixty Soho

127

Homes and Interiors

be inspired

in New York and Thompson Chicago, although she struggles when it comes to her out and out favourites. “Each project has evoked so much and there have been so many incredible people involved that every one is a family member in itself,” she explains. “There are projects that I’m very close to just because of the people involved. Each one is an experience.” As the company celebrates its 15th anniversary this year – which Bernerd hopes to mark with a party at The Hari hotel in Belgravia – the team is working hard on projects in the USA (a New York office is opening imminently), and looking forward to the future, in which the designer plans to expand the brand and continue to work on projects around the world. Reflecting on the past 15 years, Bernerd comments on how much the industry has evolved since she started. “It has changed in two ways: one is how we constantly try to understand people’s preferences, whether it be a living space and how people might want to use that,” she explains. “What might have once been a traditional layout for a living room may not suit how people live today. “The second fold is how we work in our studios,” she continues. “It’s very hard to go to a presentation without computer-generated images, so our design process is far more technical.” When it comes to her own home, Bernerd favours mid-century furniture, but cites The Conran Shop as her go-to

128

for ceramics and glassware. Her own apartment in Battersea is the first featured in her new book. The space is the ultimate representation of Bernerd’s design style, but it was actually the location that drew her to the building in the first place. “I run every morning in Battersea Park and I love my view of the river. I think Albert Bridge is one of the most beautiful in the world,” she enthuses. “I like the energy that London has and I think that it’s one of the most creative hubs globally. The amount of talent that comes out of here, we’re just spoilt by restaurants and chefs, museums and art galleries.” But with projects based all over the world, it sounds as though Bernerd gets to spend less time in the capital than she would like, and when I ask her about her plans for the future, she laughs at the prospect of looking further than the next few weeks, which are set to be hectic to say the least. “Right now, I feel that if I can make it to the airport tomorrow and get to Hong Kong in one piece, then come back to London and go to Paris, Munich and then Mexico, we’ll be on the right track.” Passports at the ready... CASE STUDY

Chalet chic The recently opened Piste Sandbach is much more than an excellent eatery – as Gemma Knight discovers, it’s also a perfect example of tasteful and tranquil interior design

L

ong-time devotees of Tarporley’s award-winning Piste Wine Bar and Restaurant were understandably delighted when the eatery announced it was to open a second site in Sandbach – but even they were pleasantly surprised by the vision which met their eyes at its official unveiling in April. Taking its cue from its sister restaurant, launched in 2010, Piste’s Sandbachbased incarnation embodies Alpine luxury, artfully combining elements of old and new to create an utterly unique design motif. The building, which holds a Grade II-listed status, was transformed over a six-month period of extensive renovation – during which the kitchen was extended and new electrics and insulation installed. The design team were then able to work their magic, using a blend of raw, natural materials and soft, simple furnishings to produce a calm space that reflects the unique Piste ethos.

Lighting The lighting concept for the new restaurant is nothing if not striking, and certainly a perfect example of

130

successfully executed statement design. Using antique wooden sledges suspended from the ceiling with traditional braided cable and filament bulbs, each lighting fixture was created on site and overflows with quirky charm. On tables, soft, simple, additional lighting comes in the form of candle-holding bottles – a chic, slightly bohemian aesthetic that never goes out of style.

Homes and Interiors

Seating

Decoration

The fixed seating in the restaurant continues to draw on a simple, luxurious-cum-rustic theme, with chairs covered in classic Shetland wool check, from the Roxburgh collection by British brand Linwood Fabrics, renowned for their quality pieces inspired by textile archives and produced in family-run mills. The stools, meanwhile, are upholstered in soft-brushed flint linens from the Geneva collection by Villa Nova, a brand known for its modern, versatile printed fabrics, decorative weaves, sheers and wallcoverings.

The colour scheme is of muted greys in various shades – an chic, minimalist choice which is easy on the eye and creates a perfect contrast to the bright warmth of the natural wood elements. Antique miscellanea is also put to practical use, with the wall of antique ski poles on raw sawn panelling and bar top of old snooker bed slates making for two striking examples.

Artwork While the simple, natural design motif calls for a pared-down approach, the artwork selected to complement the restaurant’s design, which it does in an understated, authentic and well-integrated way. On the walls, diners will see a fascinating collection of antique snowshoes, ice skates, skis, antlers and cow bells, all sourced from a specialist in antique sportswear based on Portobello Road in London. There are also various framed vintage ski resort prints, and several reindeer hides, sustainably sourced from experts in Arctic regions as a bi-product of the Scandinavian meat industry, which provides a livelihood for many local families.

Managing The Space In order to create a fluid design which nevertheless allowed a demarcation of the bar and dining areas, unique divides – such as a rack comprised of pairs of antique skis – were created, separating the areas while keeping the venue feeling open and light, with diners benefiting from the bar atmosphere without it being intrusive.

Old Meets New Perhaps the greatest strength of the design is its seamless interweaving of old and new elements, creating an inviting, informal feel that sacrifices neither authenticity nor comfort. The rustic wooden tables with their heavy industrial iron bases sit harmoniously with the glass-galleried staircase, while the combination of polished concrete and natural oak flooring gives a sleek, characterful finish. The German Connection Exciting news for hard-core gardeners: a new international garden and consumer lifestyle show – International Garten Ausstellung (IGA) – opened its doors in Berlin on 13th April, running until 15th October and featuring garden designs from all over the world. Bigger than all three RHS shows combined, the show – which takes place in Germany only once every ten years – focuses on a green, urban lifestyle under the motto of ‘an ocean of colours’, and will appeal to anyone interested in gardens, horticulture and the German capital. IGA has its own cable car, which swoops visitors into the show from the local underground station, while the 104-hectare showground is divided into five large areas, featuring an open-air performance stage, an energy-efficient tropical hall in the Balinese Garden, art exhibitions, children’s play areas, restaurants and a visitor centre. Focus on... PICTURE-PERFECT HACK FOR STORING SEEDS: Organise your seed packets in photo albums

G

ardeners often drown in all their seed packets, often tossed in an old drawer or thrown in a paper bag for safe keeping – the confusion becomes nearly impossible to sort through. Without a safe storage area, seeds can suffer from fungal problems related to moisture growth within the seed packet. While glass jars, small baggies filled with desiccant, and cardboard boxes do work, they sometimes become challenging to sort. Special plastic boxes such as the Seed Keeper Kit from The Seed Keeper Company also works well because it includes alphabetic divider cards for the seeds. However, to hack your own homemade seed organizer, try using a photo album with special pocket pages. Using a photo album allows you to store more than one seed packet per pocket. It is also easy to include other garden information such as plastic plant labels or seed trade lists. Pages

can be rearranged in the book as needed to help you better organise. This allows for better alphabetising or categorising according to plant type, such as flowers, brassicas, roots, legumes, ornamental edibles, herbs, or perennials. There are two categories of seed packet saving – seed-filled packets or empty, used seed packets. Saving either can be important to your garden. How many times have you planted a garden container or bed and realised you did not know how far apart to thin the seedlings? By saving your seed packets as reference material, you can look back and better answer any questions you might have about the plants. Another idea for seed packet storage is to store your seeds by planting date.

Tuck pieces of paper in each photo album page pocket with the planting date and location in your garden where the seeds should be planted. This will help you hack the upcoming growing season with ease. 101 Organic Gardening Hacks by Shawna Coronado Published by Cool Springs Press, an imprint of The Quarto Group, at £12.99 in paperback

Built by Barratt London, Hampstead Reach will comprise five seven-bedroom detached houses and 39 two- and three-bedroom apartments.
