I

t’s April, and here in Cheshire that means hope and new life... and temperamental weather. One day it’s wool coats; the next you’re tempted to wear that floaty dress to work. For me, the overwhelming urge to hibernate is dissipating, while my summer wardrobe is fighting to be released from its slumber and calling for new additions à la mode. I’m loving statement sleeves but, for a full update on all the newest fashion week trends, head to page 39, while our fashion shoot explores further on page 66. With race season beginning in May, we’ve also called in some advice on where to go, and how to dress for him (p.74) and her (p.27) – we’ve even tips on dressing for royalty from our gentlemanly friends from Gieves & Hawkes (p.32). Speaking of which, Stockport’s Claire Foy – who has an eye for playing royalty – shares some of her latest televisual adventures with us on page 22, as she appears on Netflix’s £100 million The Crown with Matt Smith... if you haven’t seen it, it’s very good. Back to reality, the team here are busy planning the rest of the year in holidays; from city breaks (p.86) to short-haul adventure in Austria (p.92), as well as taking inspiration from the interiors of some of our favourite hotels (p.128). We’re quite abuzz, and there’s more to come... So, as spring emerges and the happy daffodils inspire me, I will don my statement sleeves and floaty skirt and greet it headfirst. Maybe with statement umbrella and waterproofs, too, just to be safe!

My life in CHESHIRE Colin Taylor, PAINTER

O “For me, art is about wanting to record what I see and do”

riginally from Leicestershire, it was in the late 80s that artist Colin Taylor moved to Manchester to work for the Manchester Evening News. Since then, Cheshire has become the base for much of his existence – be it in establishing a successful indoor climbing centre in Warrington (which now also boasts a sister centre in Birmingham), or pursuing his other obsession: art. “I’ve always painted, ever since I left school,” Colin explains. “Sometimes it’s been fairly full on and sometimes it’s had to take more of a back seat, but it’s always been there. One of the first things I understood was not to worry too much about what you paint; it’s more important to continue to paint. For me, art is about wanting to record what I see and do, and the various different places and environments that I experience. I can’t find the words to write about them, but moving paint around on a canvas seems to make sense. It’s a compulsion. That doesn’t just mean ‘landscapes’ and the natural environment – incredible though it is – it could easily be in a town or city. I’ve done paintings of a harbour; a crowd at a festival in Mongolia; a wind farm. It doesn’t really matter. I guess it’s a form of visual autobiography.” In recent years Colin’s reputation has started to grow, with solo exhibitions in New York, Washington, Cologne and Paris, but his most recent project takes him back into the heart of Manchester, recording the evolution of one of its most exciting new developments. “About two years ago, I was invited by Simpson Haugh Partners, the Manchester-based architects, to think about producing a series of works for the central atrium of No.1 Spinningfields,” he explains. “We agreed that the paintings should reflect the development of the building from, quite literally, a big hole in the ground, through to its finished state. So over the past two years I’ve been walking around a building site in central Manchester, trying to work out how best to represent the changing structure of the building as it grows. I’ve also been scribbling away in a helicopter looking down, as well as looking out over the site from other adjacent vantage points. “As the building is still unfinished, so are the paintings, but I’m getting there. It’s rare that I only work on one painting from start to finish: more usually I’ve got quite a few on the go in various stages of completion at any one time. It’s not unusual for a painting to take several years before I’m happy with it, but others take just a few months. So whilst there are 12 large paintings of about 1m square that will be installed in the building, there are more than thirty other works that have been developed alongside them.” The Manchester gallery, Contemporary Six, will be holding a one-man exhibition of Colin’s work completed as part of this project in early June, with the installation at No.1 Spinningfields later in the summer (coltaylor.co.uk) 17

TIME FOR BRUNCH Perhaps the greatest export to Britain from America, Brunch is the perfect ‘inbetween-y’ meal to fuel your weekend or indulge in much-needed hair of the dog. And you can now get yours at 1539 every Saturday and Sunday (booking advisable!). The statement restaurant and bar at Chester Racecourse first launched brunch with the addition of free yoga classes last year with local instructor and Sweaty Betty ambassador, Caroline Buist. Following this success the concept has developed...much to our delight! Guests are invited to feast on French toast with mascarpone and blueberries, smashed avocado on toast or a proper English fry up. Better still, when guests dine from the brunch or lunch menu, they are invited to order as many Bloody Marys, glasses of Prosecco or Bellinis as they like – for an additional £15 per person. We shall see you there! (restaurant1539.co.uk)

INTRODUCING BIRDIE... We love hearing people’s stories here at The Cheshire Magazine, and this month were delighted to meet Kitty and Birdie, courtesy of our friends at Chester Racecourse. Birdie, so called due to the chickens laying eggs in the engine bay when she was rescued, is a 1978 VW Camper van that has been lovingly restored and has a new life as a travelling photo booth. Birdie now boasts a 1950s style and, along with owner Kitty, can be found at fabulous events around Cheshire, so make sure you stop by to say hello and maybe have your photo taken. Painter David Hockney and art critic Martin Gayford enter into a great discussion on the development of art in their new book A History of Pictures: From the Cave to the Computer Screen. The two experts delve into the meaning behind pictures as well as how they are created. Examining everything from an African shell used as a paint palette to Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece The Mona Lisa, each chapter addresses a new question accompanied by a variety of images, forcing the reader to examine how art reflects the world we live in. £29.95, A History of Pictures: From the Cave to the Computer Screen by David Hockney and Martin Gayfor, published by Thames and Hudson (thamesandhudson.com)

The frills of fashion Melissa Porter shares her fashion idols with us, they’re not what you will be expecting...

T

wo of my favourite fashionable folk are Lady Gaga and the late Steve Jobs. With Gaga choosing to wear bacon, and the late Jobs showing up like he had no bacon, you probably think I’ve lost my marbles, but – in our fast-paced and often fickle world that sees colours and collections replaced each season – I’m most impressed by those who play by their own unique rules. They appear to use apparel and accessories to embody and express the values they live by, and I applaud those free-styling outliers who choose to be less influenced by the fearinspired way many of us consume fashion. Frills, metallic, studs and neons are all fun embellishments that embody the essence of style at different times, but when this fun factor is cloaked by a commercial, fear-based agenda designed to make people subconsciously feel excluded and different, this is precisely what I don’t love about the fashion industry. I am aware the industry is a business, whose objective is to drive sales, but this strategy is dismissive and disrespectful of the negative effect it has on men and women’s self-esteem, and the behavioural challenges it fuels, such as eating disorders and bullying. The fashion magazines are notorious for featuring computer-enhanced images of slim models. Why? With the intention of shaming their audiences into believing the average size 14/16 is not ‘normal’. I don’t love, for example, that I’m shamed into believing my breasts are not ‘normal’, as they are unable to defy gravity as per the featured super-slim model. These stylised images tend to be coupled with a subconscious, fear-based sales angle, designed to encourage us to make a purchase by offering an impartial blow-by-blow explanation of why

this season’s new push-up, balconette beauty of a bra is a must-have. You must buy it! Right now! Cue the mass panic to buy before this heavilyfeatured item sells out. Don’t forget the must-have, pull-me-in, waist-high revolutionary denim jeans, never before seen on anyone other than Taylor Swift. Both jeans and bra items are made available with frills, studs and a splash of neon. Better go and buy it. I wouldn’t want to stand out and be perceived as odd by those who might label me individual or different. Please don’t misunderstand me; I love feeling elegant. I love great quality and well-fitting clothes. What I don’t love is a commercial engine, shaming me into feeling like I’m not enough. Not thin enough. Not cool enough. Not ruffled or metallacised enough. Enough is enough. I am enough. As are you. Even when wearing four-season-old apparel in colours that reflect the mood you wish to evoke for your day – rather than colours and shapes the brands have tried to make us think we need. If you can be anything, be the unique and individual person you are. You’re incredible. Melissa is a professional, certified transformational life coach (melissaportercoach.com)

Netflix’s opulent royal biopic The Crown has broken records and received rave reviews – with no performance more arresting than the lead herself. Here, newfound national and local treasure Claire Foy speaks with Jake Taylor

N

ot many people get to be a member of a royal family in real life, but for Claire Foy, inhabiting the character of some of history’s most well-known female monarchs is becoming something of a habit. Having starred as the tragic Tudor bride Anne Boleyn in the BBC’s acclaimed adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s novel Wolf Hall, Foy was selected by streaming giant Netflix to front its most expensive original series to date – the lavish $100 million drama The Crown, penned by none other than celebrated biopic writer Peter Morgan, who was also behind The Queen. Foy portrays our very own Queen Elizabeth II at the start of her reign, alongside Matt Smith’s dashing Prince Phillip and John Lithgow’s formidable Winston Churchill. Having received unequivocal praise from both fans and

critics alike – not to mention a Golden Globe for her nuanced characterisation – the Stockport-born star is quick to admit that, despite having been head of state for over 60 years, Elizabeth remains an elusive figure. “The most difficult thing is that she is world famous, yet very little is known about her personally,” explains the 32-year-old actor. “The nature of her job and duty is to sort of keep herself under wraps. That is the amazing challenge as an actor that you face. You also have to try to avoid playing up to the image; you want to show the human side and what a remarkable woman she is.” And as Foy was following in the footsteps of some of Britain’s most successful theatrical exports – including Helen Mirren, Kristin Scott Thomas and Emma Thompson – she was also

“I compare their lives to mine and see that there are many shared basic human experiences”

23

keen to add her own nuances to the role that would differentiate The Crown’s monarch from her Hollywood predecessors, saying she wanted to “interpret rather than imitate”. There was one element of Elizabeth’s persona, however, that was crucial to realistically depicting any member of the British royals – and one that could have been a problem for an actress who was raised in Manchester and Leeds. A later move to Buckinghamshire and a year at the Oxford School of Drama gave Foy a head start when it came to emulating the immediately recognisable elocution of the Windsors. “I didn’t want to create a mannered performance which tends to be irritating, although I did work on getting the accent right,” Foy reveals. “There are little things you

24

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature

do with the accent, that if you put them into a certain sentence, it gives it all that feeling. “They’re so specifically different from the way that the British accent is now, so that really helps. It’s all to do with the tongue and the mouth and the muscles – it really is a technical thing. I spent as much time working on how she moved and the accent until I could get into character naturally, without having to think about it because in the end you have to let all that go and actually act!” Clearly, Foy is becoming a master of the craft. Although the acclaim for these high-profile royal portrayals has brought her to the world’s attention in a way most other actors must surely view with the greenest eyes, she’s been working very hard to get to this point. From early stage experience in drama school to a string of TV and film roles – lead turns in Little Dorrit and The Night Watch, and in Season of the Witch alongside Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman, for example – she’s proved her Golden Globeworthy credentials over time. The plaudits she has received off the back of her work in the royal drama have elevated Foy very quickly to the forefront of British thesp status – her next cinematic role is opposite Andrew Garfield and Hugh Bonneville in Andy Serkis’ biographic of polio survivor Robert Cavendish, Breathe. But the actress is proud of her latest roles for another reason – she’s “been able to look through the peephole” into some of the UK’s most fascinating historical figures. “Now when I look at the royals, I compare their lives to mine and see that there are many shared basic human experiences,” Foy agrees. “They are human beings and not just an institution. “It was a dream to play Anne Boleyn, even if she’s thought of as evil and not a very sympathetic character. I saw her as a very ambitious and complex woman and I never tried to judge her. You need to try to understand them rather than passing judgement. As an actor I always try to have empathy for my characters and it would be awful to play a character you hate.”

“You want to show the human side and what a remarkable woman she is” With both Foy and Smith signed on to a second series of The Crown – the third is slated to involve a large-scale recast – Netflix’s modern incarnation of Elizabeth is fast becoming as recognisable as Mirren’s monarchical turns. “We have approached everything in a respectful rather than in a sensationalist way,” Foy says. “I think this series presents them as interesting people who are often required to deal with difficult situations in their personal lives and in their public duties.” But despite the critical acclaim surrounding her performance, there’s one review Foy isn’t so keen to hear – that of the real Queen Elizabeth. “The truth is I would prefer that to remain a secret,” she laughs. “The idea scares me a little!”

The Dress Naomi Langford-Archer, Olivia May Race day is all about feminine dresses that adhere to the hem lines. Don a tailored or cropped style jacket and keep the look classic. A jacket is essential to finish off an outfit (and prepare for the British weather!), otherwise it is like going half dressed.

And keep accessories to a minimum – it should all be about the dress, jacket and hat – you don’t want to overdo it! Definitely think colour: don’t go black and boring. Enjoy dressing up, as this is one of the few events which offers a chance to inject some colour into the earlier race months. Ultimately, your outfit depends on your personality. Don’t be afraid – you can do textures, colours and prints. Fabrics can create a bold look. However, if this is not your style and you prefer to stick to a more classic look, keep it elegant and think the 4 Ss: sleek, simple and stylish, with an air of sophistication. But be different, be you. Enjoy sourcing that

The Shoes Tiffany Thomas, Hoity Toity Time to give a nod to the footwear trends of SS17: block heels, strappy sandals and classic courts with creative embellishment. The Nicholas Kirkwood Maeva Pearl Pump in platinum sparkle features a slim block heel, perfect to wear for comfort and walking on grass. This style is the ultimate luxury for your feet and your outfit. Nicholas Kirkwood also offers a chic, slim stiletto heel in soft pastel shades of baby blue and nude, with an exquisite hexagonal architectural embellishment on the front of the shoe. Strappy heels are very on-trend, and one of this season’s major fashion colour trends in footwear is yellow, so why not combine the two? The lovely Pura Lopez strappy heels tick all the boxes. For a classic court shoe, we recommend the iconic Rupert Sanderson Malory in nude. Frequently worn on the red carpet, it offers

comfort and style, meaning it’s great for long periods of standing. Plus, any form of nude or sparkle in footwear will complement any colour outfit you choose to wear. Why not pop a pair of flats into your handbag to give your feet a respite towards the end of the day? Nicholas Kirkwood flat Beya loafer and French Sole ballet pumps will still retain a glamorous look. The Make-up Tom Ford, Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar The most important thing to remember when considering your make-up for a day at the races is the longevity. Your make-up has to last from your champagne breakfast to the after party! Always use a primer. the

best dressed Headquartered at No.1 Savile Row, Gieves & Hawkes is one of the world’s most famous tailors and the go-to brand for stylish men looking for the very best. Chester store manager, Simon Ball offers his advice for dressing for the races

“O

ur customers want to feel perfectly turned out, and come to us because they know we fully understand the rules and present them with contemporary, stylish options that will stand out for the right reasons. Many customers favour a blue or grey three piece suit for race days, tailored to their needs and preferences, which can be styled out with many different shirt and tie combinations. Adding a pocket square helps add some polish and personality – it goes without saying that polishing your shoes and ensuring that your grooming is taken care of promises to make you among the best dressed in attendance. We recommend avoiding anything too shouty or loud – immaculate details and finesse will always separate the men from the boys. “Having been in business since the 18th century, the company has a fair bit of history and many tales to tell. Established in 1784, Gieves became a celebrated supplier of the British Royal Navy, and Hawkes, founded in 1771, of the British Army. Their most famous customers, Admiral Lord Nelson and Field Marshall The Duke of Wellington were the two most important commanders in British history, whose great victories at Trafalgar in 1805 and Waterloo in 1815 against the French Emperor Napoleon established Great Britain as a major maritime and land power, precipitating the growth of the British Empire during the rest of

the 19th century. Both Gieves and Hawkes played their part in this enterprise through their service. “Of course, when dressing well really counts, it is important to know that you are in good company. The firm has supplied ten generations of British royalty, from King George III up to the present day Queen Elizabeth II, her son the Prince of Wales and her grandsons, the Princes William and Harry. “The Gieves & Hawkes brand is infused with aristocratic, royal and political heritage, and timeless style which resonates internationally. The beating heart of this rich provenance is the commitment to handmade, bespoke tailoring and the associated craft, and an unyielding guarantee of quality that influences everything the company does. Every ready-towear garment or Private Tailoring order is inspired and informed by this Bespoke pedigree and provenance. “Aside from Royal patrons, famous clients include David Beckham, Daniel Craig, Samuel L Jackson, Robbie Williams and Kevin Spacey. Historic clients include Sir Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin and Ian Fleming. A Gieves & Hawkes client is in the very best company.” Gieves & Hawkes has proudly traded in Liverpool and Chester for many years, as well as in such famous stores as Harrods, Selfridges, Bergdorf Goodman in New York and Le Bon Marche in Paris. Keep your eyes on the fashion pages – 2017 is going to be the year of India Rawsthorn. Gemma Knight sits down with the fledgling Cheshirenative to talk scouting, photoshoots and Coronation Street

– effortlessly shifting from Bambi-incredulous to sharply penetrating in front of the lens – and it’s easy to see why she was scouted by Select Models aged just 13. “I went to The Clothes Show in Birmingham with my friend and our mums because we are really interested in fashion design and beauty, and I’d heard it was a fun day out from my friends at school,” India explains, bubbly and at ease, with an infectious, childlike grin which instantly betrays her age. “I’ve always been tall and slim and was often asked if I was a model, so I’d thought about it for years. After I was

O

n 2nd March, India Rawsthorn from Macclesfield turned fifteen, just like millions of other teenage girls have done and will do. Like her peers, her future will hold GCSEs and boyfriends and Instagram selfies – but, unlike them, and as one of the brightest new faces at the UK’s largest modelling agency, it might very well also hold world domination. Already standing 5ft 6in, with long blonde hair and a neat, elfin face, it’s India’s wide, saucer-like green-blue eyes which really make her stand out. They are completely arresting

scouted there, I met with Select and talked about it a lot with my family, and we decided to give it a go. Since then, I’ve basically just been building my portfolio – because I’m too young to do much professional modelling work yet and Select are really encouraging me to focus on my school work and exams – but I’ve done a lot of work on stage, performing at the Royal Exchange and the Royal Opera House in Manchester, and in front of the camera in Coronation Street. I do regular ballet and acrobatics classes, too, and there are lots of opportunities to be involved in the performing arts at school, so I’m always rehearsing for something!” Despite being only fifteen, India is mature and pragmatic about her chosen career – thanks, it seems, to a grounded worldliness and a strong work ethic. “I live and go to school in Cheshire at the moment, but I did spend a year travelling with my family around the world when I was seven, living in Canada, Hungary and Costa Rica,” she

tells me. “I also have a very close friendship group at school and they are always so supportive, they think [my modelling is] so cool and are always asking me questions, but we all cheer-on each other’s different skills and talents. I’m also really lucky to be with an agency like Select – they’re all so kind and you can see how it’s been going for 40 years! Everyone works so hard to keep the vibe fun and friendly, and it’s just a great family atmosphere.” Then again, she’s in pretty good company. With the likes of Daisy Lowe, Pixie Lott, Jess Glynn and Paloma Faith on its books, not to mention model superstars Agyness Deyn, Irina Shayk, Pixie Geldof, David Gandy and Oliver Cheshire, Select was also one of the first modelling agencies to find new talents by ‘scouting’ in public places, this year marking its 20th anniversary of doing so at The Clothes Show. Its reputation in the UK is without equal, while it ranks as one of the top agencies in the world, too, renowned for its ability to identify promising new faces in their prime. Though her star is on the rise, India is content to take her ascendance to the big leagues slowly and keep her options open.

“I go down to Select in London during my school holidays and do test photoshoots or see clients with my chaperone, which is really exciting!” she enthuses. “But as I’m still quite young to do many modelling jobs, most days I’m at school and most evenings I go to play rehearsals or dance classes. I’m a very creative person and love the performing arts – whether it’s Shakespeare, a modern play or a contemporary dance performance, like the recent Matthew Bourne Nutcracker production I did at school – and I wouldn’t mind one day becoming a director or perhaps an actor, or maybe designing my own fashion line. Luckily, though, modelling means you get meet so many creative people, which I just love.” It’s likely that India’s globetrotting days are only just beginning, but for the time being her life remains inextricably interwoven with the fabric of her home county and its surrounds. “Cheshire is great, because it’s got such beautiful countryside but it’s so easy to get into Manchester and London, too. As a family we often spend time at our house in Anglesey and,

“Cheshire is great, because it’s got such beautiful countryside but it’s so easy to get into Manchester and London, too” when the weather’s warm enough, I like to paddle board in Rhosneigr, but when I’m home in Macclesfield I like to go to the Jack Sevens Art Gallery Cafe and the Seven Sisters Ice Cream farm near Knutsford.” When we meet, India is engrossed in rehearsals for yet another school play, a performance which will see her treading the boards at another of Cheshire’s treasures; The Lowry – an honour in itself but, for India, likely just another stepping stone on her journey to a stage of a wholly different kind. I’ll be keeping a close eye on the cover of Vogue, that’s for sure. India is represented worldwide by Select Models, the UK’s biggest model agency, celebrating its 40th Birthday this year #Select40 @selectmodelmgmt

TAY L O R TA L K S

Detox...Retox...No Botox Liz Taylor talks fashion, fruit and the importance of first impressions

F

or me, shopping in Milan with Ayda Williams (Robbie’s gorgeous other half) is an out of body experience as, for both of us, fashion is a work-to-live incentive. It’s cool to be a vegan right now, and healthy living lifestyles have influenced fashion evolutions too: everything from Fairtrade cottons to celebrity campaigns protesting real fur, and ethical clothing designers making bold statements. Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood are amongst the style heavyweights adopting this approach, alongside smaller labels such as Junky Styling and People Tree. But, for this busy event planner, it’s the fashionable detox that I look to each year. With a full diary ahead of me, I booked a week out and, on the recommendations of a number of my discerning clients, headed for Juicy Oasis in Portugal: the home of master juicer himself, Jason Vale. I arrived in torrential rain, but I was greeted with the sunniest of smiles from my manager for the week, Karen. Her people skills excel and I instantly felt comfortable in her food-free environment. My room, Divine 2, overlooked the glorious lake: a view I would wake up to for five days. With these retreats it is essential you immerse yourself in everything that is on offer in order to reach your goal. Everyone is self-conscious but, in true Queen Bee style, I was up with the lark and in a crossed-leg position to meditate with Amanda. After 20 minutes, with my eyes aglow, they merged me into wake-up yoga and, despite my initial 44

“I went to bed reliant on my book and the view of the lake to lure me into a soporific state”

cynicism, I was soon bright eyed and eager, grabbing my wheatgrass shot and heading to the gym. At 10.30, we’d take our first juice combined with a ginger shot, followed by the exercise class of the day. Juicy Oasis offers a day of activities, and their infectious enthusiasm can be life changing. However, I had pre-booked my treatments from the UK assuming that the experts would be above and beyond excellent. Not so: my colonic was a little rough, my deep tissue massage, a pummelling. I went to bed reliant on my book and the view of the lake to lure me into a soporific state. The next day I cancelled my Rainforest Massage, but the daily activities spurred me on and the juices were nutritious and filling – the bowl of soup at 6.30pm akin to a medium-rare steak and a glass of Chateau Neuf! I know only too well how vital it is to communicate in a luxury industry. First impressions are so important – eye contact, a smile, recognition of the fact that these people are paying for your service and you want them to come back! Maybe my expectations are pretty high, but it is one area that I am passionate about, so I was disappointed to see that Jason Vale had overlooked this essential ingredient in the infrastructure of his concept (though they did crack a smile if you bought his products from the shop!). Nevertheless: yes, I am recharged; yes, I feel fantastic; yes, I am ready to deliver another brilliant year. And yes, I would return. (tlc-ltd.co.uk)

Acting it Out Sweaty palms, mumbled speech, racing heart – public speaking and job interviews are the stuff of nightmares for most people, and even more terrifying, thanks to new research suggesting that interviewers and clients have their minds made up about you within just half a second. But never fear – a new initiative of workshops, from pioneering company Rehearse It! has combined an understanding of behavioural science with insights from performing arts to improve your body language skills. Each one-day workshop features ‘getting to grips with behavioural science’, plus intensive practical exercises and rehearsals of interview stages, including beginning well, summarising and answering

difficult questions to harness motormemory skills so that you’ll remember what to do naturally. You’ll never fear that big pitch again. Rehearse It! workshops take place in Manchester at The Royal Northern College of Music & Clayton Hotel (rehearseit.co.uk)

The Gravity Train Wright Marshall Fine Arts, Cheshire’s premier antiques auctioneers, recently raised an astounding sum – almost £100,000 more than was estimated – through the sale of the Antony Adler model train collection. The collection, featuring more than 4,000 lots collected by Mr Adler over decades, saw bids from around the globe on 11th and 12th January at Beeston. The very successful sale helped raise more than £230,000, which will go to nominated charities as Mr Adler instructed his solicitors. (wrightmarshall.co.uk/fine-arts)

prize lots Anyanwu, Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu M.B.E, 1956 SOLD £353,000 ESTIMATE £150,000-£200,000

“Ben Enwonwu was the first important Nigerian artist to reflect the sculptural traditions of his people in his work, as is clearly and spectacularly evident in Anyanwu. For the artist, the statue was a visual manifestation of the new Nigeria, culturally confident and proud of her heritage. I’m not surprised that it has commanded such a high price at auction.” – Giles Peppiatt, director of African Art at Bonhams

’Panthere de Cartier’ bracelet, Cartier SOLD £5,550 ESTIMATE £750-£950

“This was a wonderful lot, entered to the sale with an attractive price. We see consistently good results for designer pieces across our three monthly jewellery auctions. This is due in large part to brand recognition and the sheer quality of workmanship that goes into producing the pieces. Designers such as Cartier are renowned globally as being exceptional jewellers, and that is no different in the secondary market.” – Stephen Whittaker, managing director at Fellows

The inside story

After a decade spent without its own city centre theatre and cinema, Chester at last welcomes a brand new, cutting-edge arts complex to its lanes. Natalie Anglesey meets artistic director Alex Clifton to find out more

48

C

hester’s brand new £37 million arts complex, built around the old Odeon cinema on Northgate Street, will contain an 800-seat theatre, a 150-seat studio, a small cinema, a restaurant and a library. The latter will include a dedicated children’s section, complete with arts and crafts spaces and a storytelling room. It will aptly be known as Storyhouse.

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Art & Culture

Chief executive Andrew Bentley points out the simplicity of the name. “We’re over the moon at our new identity. It’s a straightforward expression of the journey we have been on as a company, and where, together, we are opening this amazing new building.” Due to open in May 2017, after a decade-long absence of a city centre cinema and theatre, this exciting new arts complex has been carved out of the Grade II-listed shell of the former Art Deco-style Odeon cinema, alongside a new brick and translucent glass extension. Artistic Director Alex Clifton is full of boundless enthusiasm for the aims of the new project. “This is a place to discover, make and share great stories. It’s a place to bring inspiring ideas to life and capture and communicate the creative spirit.” Brought up in Chester, Alex will be directing the first season and hopes the plays will prove a ‘catalyst’ for the city’s cultural activity. “The opportunity to open something with genuine cultural significance in the city I love is a monstrous privilege. I’ve great memories of growing up here.” Alex lived in Littleton and went to Christleton High before going to Oxford University to study English. After graduation, he worked at The National Theatre and International Opera before setting up his own theatre company, travelling around the country in an old ambulance. “I drove a bunch of actors around presenting plays for marginalised communities. I then worked at RADA, teaching acting, before setting up the open air theatre here with Andrew Bentley in 2010. I’ve now returned with my family to work in Chester because there’s quite a difference between making work for people you don’t know and making work for a community you know and are passionate about.”

“The opportunity to open something with genuine cultural significance in the city I love is a monstrous privilege”

49

Art & Culture | The CHESHIRE Magazine

Alex is understandably enthusiastic about the exciting opening season. “We’re thrilled to announce that some of our inaugural season will be seen both inside our new theatre as well as outside in our Open Air Theatre. We’ve four brilliant stories to tell, and open with the down-and-dirty musical The Beggar’s Opera. This is a new version for Chester with an original score, rewritten for our time. “We follow that with Alice in Wonderland. This will be a joyful family show, about a little girl on the last afternoon of her childhood, escaping into wonderland. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be an on-stage carnival and celebrates the glorious diversity and volatility of human desire. All these plays tackle important questions about our shared cultural identity, and none more obviously than Julius Caesar, a political thriller set to take audiences to the rancid heart of power.

50

Alex’s love of the theatre began when he joined Chester Gateway Youth Theatre Company and became a member of the Cheshire Youth Theatre. “We had a very successful youth theatre at the Gateway and there was a significant waiting list. It would be mad not to seize the opportunity to give young people that opportunity again in Storyhouse. We want people across the borough, from all different backgrounds, to find opportunities for self-expression. We’ll make it as affordable as possible for amateur groups as I’ve no interest in making a profit out of them, I simply want to support them and help them grow.” Storyhouse is predicted to receive 600,000 visits per year. Cheshire West and Chester Council have committed £32.5 million to fund its creation, and the £37 million build cost has been made possible by an inspiring investment from Cheshire West and Chester Council, with generous support from Arts Council England and major local employer, MBNA. Funding has also been attracted from major national trusts and foundations. Councillor Louise Gittins, cabinet member at Communities and Wellbeing for Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “Storyhouse will be a place the borough’s communities can come together and experience the UK’s leading theatre, opera, dance and music companies – it will create opportunities not available before. What better way to start than with Storyhouse’s locally produced programme? This is the first of many exciting stories.” Storyhouse will be the largest public building in Chester set alongside the town hall and cathedral – completing a trinity of cultural, civic and spiritual public spaces. Alex sums up: “It will be as much a visitor experience as a performing arts venue. Our public spaces form the backbone of the project and will change every day. They will be the busiest, most creative area of our work. We are on a mission to democratise culture, making open spaces in which communities will manage themselves. Theirs are the stories we want to tell.” (storyhouse.com)

Dress to Impress Building on the hugely successful launch of the Drive last year, Cartier has borrowed a base-calibre from Piaget to deliver a slimmed-down version of the handsome dress watch. One of the few criticisms that could be levelled at the original timepiece was that it felt a little cumbersome under a shirt sleeve – an issue that’s resolved in the 6.6mm-deep Drive de Cartier ‘Extra-Flat’. From £6,300 (cartier.co.uk)

One of a Kind In 2015, Vacheron Constantin presented the most complex watch ever created. The Reference 57260 boasted 57 complications. It was also 131.7mm high and 50.55mm thick, meaning that for most, it hardly constituted a piece of wearable tech. Far more practical is the one-of-a-kind Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600. It clocks up 23 – mainly astronomical – complications, thanks to a calibre containing 514 components and six spring barrels. Remarkably, all this is packaged within a wrist-friendly 45mm case. The Wanderlust Watch As one of the latest brands to take up residence at Selfridges Manchester, we are thoroughly on board with British watch brand Farer’s ethos: that the desire to own quality products, which journey through life’s adventures with you, causes them to grow in beauty with every passing day until they become valued, lifelong possessions. While everything around you changes and evolves, these treasured pieces proudly stand the test of time, and – to reflect this – each of Farer’s watches is named after an iconic British explorer; individuals who were equal parts daring, courageous and filled with wanderlust. Greubel Forsey’s Masterpiece Even by Greubel Forsey’s own bar-setting standards, the Grande Sonnerie it launched this year represents a new level of watchmaking. As both a grande sonnerie and a minute repeater, the watch will chime the hours, quarter-hours and minutes of the day, a technical feat that only a handful of industry heavyweights can achieve. What makes it even more spectacular is the inclusion of a tourbillon in a case just 16.13mm in height. £1.1m (greubelforsey.com)

About time

Lady Gaga almost stole the show at this year’s Super Bowl – not simply for her live performance at half-time, but for her appearance in Tiffany & Co.’s latest ad campaign, which aired during the game. Although the American jewellery brand has crafted the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the winners since 1967, it had never screened an advert during the National Football League championship before. The campaign appears ahead of the much-anticipated release of the new jewellery collection, Tiffany City HardWear, which will be available from late April. Watch this space. Tiffany & Co. Lustrous beauty

This year marks Pierre Hardy’s 15th anniversary as creative director of the Hermès fine jewellery division. Fittingly, the concept of time – and space – was his main preoccupation for the brand’s latest collection, HB-IV Continuum. It is the brand’s fourth haute bijouterie collection, comprising three sets with strong, graphic lines, an abundance of colour, gold, diamonds and pearls. Two years in the making, it was well worth the wait. (hermes.com)

Coco avant Chanel It’s hard to believe there was life in fashion before Chanel. The legendary French brand’s latest high jewellery collection, unveiled at Paris Couture Week, pays tribute to its founder, Gabrielle Coco Chanel, and the women who inspired and supported her before her fashion house achieved worldwide fame. Its 11 suites feature lace and ribbon patterns – two guiding elements of Coco Chanel’s style – and signature motifs of the house, including camellias and birds. Morganite, pearls, moonstones and Padparadscha sapphires, blended with diamonds, all make an appearance. The Jeanne brooch (pictured) is beautifully set with pink sapphires, grey spinels and white diamonds. Coco Avant Chanel collection, from £1,825 (chanel.com)

Mariam and Dania Sawedeg, the founders of jewellery brand Kamushki, recognise the importance of reinvention to stay relevant. Taking the late music icon Prince as inspiration, the pair have reinterpreted their signature fish motif in a collection of diamond and pearl pieces, modelled by DJ and presenter Zara Martin. This edgy range is the first time they have used Japanese freshwater pearls, which are cast in chokers, rings and earrings set in 18-karat gold. When the battle lines for divorce are drawn, there is an alternative way of dealing with separation

Sarah Thompson, Principal Lawyer, Family Mediator and Collaborative Lawyer, Slater and Gordon

There are several ways to sort out the division of the marital assets, and the arrangements for any children. Most couples when they separate would prefer to deal with matters amicably, not only for their own sake, but also for the sake of their children. Being able to sit round a table with your ex-partner to discuss face to face what is going to happen with the finances and children, is not only possible, but happens every day with the help of either a mediator or collaborative lawyer. Family lawyer Sarah Thompson shares her knowledge and experience on some of those lesser known means to navigate a divorce.

Q: What is mediation? Mediation is a process whereby a separating couple can sit down together with the help of an independent impartial third party, namely a mediator. Most mediators are legally trained, and some are qualified lawyers, so they are used to handling these types of cases on a daily basis. The mediator will help the two of you provide your financial disclosure and will help you explore options for a settlement, as well as reality checking those proposals before facilitating an agreement between you both. In the unlikely event that agreement is not reached, then the mediator will assist you in proceeding to court. However, statistics from the Ministry of Justice show that two thirds of cases involved in mediation are resolved without the need for court intervention.

Q: What is collaborative law? Collaborative law is different from mediation. Instead of there being a third party facilitating an agreement between the two of you, collaborative law involves you and your ex-partner sitting round a table with your legal representatives. It is a very open process and is client led, so you and your ex-partner will agree what is to be discussed and when. Your lawyers are there to advise you and help guide you through the process. Whereas a round table meeting may be more adversarial and led by solicitors, collaborative law is a way for parties to work together to reach an agreement over their separation with dignity and integrity. Collaborative law helps reduce the number of letters between lawyers and and enables you to get your point across directly to your ex-partner without it potentially being lost in translation.

specifically deal with the emotional fallout of divorce. They include family therapists, family counsellors and divorce consultants. They can speak to you individually, with your former partner and also with your children.

Q: How do I find out about these alternatives to court? At Slater and Gordon we offer a full range of family law services including alternative dispute resolution options. We are one of the few firms in the UK to have a family mediator, an arbitrator and collaboratively trained lawyers. We can also sign post you to professionals able to help with the emotional side of separation.

he early signs of spring are the inspiration behind Mira Zwillinger’s 2017 bridal collection, a nod to the first buds born and the rebirth of nature as the weather warms up. Whisper of Blossom embraces the new season with overtly floral motifs, sheer fabrics and delicate embroidery. As with Zwillinger’s previous collections, the beauty is in the detail – sweeping trains are dotted with floral appliqué and fragile lace wraps around shoulders, while shapes are ethereal with voluminous tulle skirts and beaded bodices. Green Sleeves The lush botanical gardens of Rio de Janeiro offer a more peaceful tourist spot than the often chaotic Christ the Redeemer, with 54 hectares of blooming flora and more than 6,000 species of plant to see. Jardim Botânico presents the label’s signature swim shorts in four new prints named after plants found in the garden. The flamboyant wardrobes of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Rod Stewart in the 1970s were Peter Dundas’ calling points when designing the Roberto Cavalli SS17 collection – a bohemian medley of suede fringing, dyed denim and heavy embroidery. Available from February, the new range marries 1970s style with Native American and Moroccan influences, resulting in an explosion of colour, texture and prints. Boot-cut jeans and leather jackets are the more subtle options available, while the more daring among you may be tempted to brave the mustard suit, floral kimono or Navajo-inspired cape. It goes without saying that we at The Cheshire Magazine love seeing our local favourites doing their bit for the community, so we’re big fans of the latest initiative at McArthurGlen designer outlet Cheshire Oaks, which will see the centre play host to a series of autism-friendly evenings in partnership with north west charity, Autism Together, throughout 2017. The evenings will be part of the centre’s commitment to raising awareness of the condition and the challenges it presents, with each event seeing the centre’s lights dimmed, the volume of background music turned down low and Tannoy announcements kept to a minimum. There will also be quiet spaces where people with autism can relax and unwind, creating a comfortable shopping environment with specially trained staff on hand to help guests and their families. Well done, Cheshire Oaks. Autism-friendly evenings will take place on 7 March, 9 May, 6 June, 4 July, 5 September, 3 October and 7 November (cheshireoaksdesigneroutlet.com)

irstly, the fit is everything. Regardless of whether you opt for a ready-to-wear suit or invest in a made-to-measure, take the time to get your clothing tailored. A day at the races is the perfect opportunity to show off your personality so choose something that will help you stand out from the crowd. Having said that, always check the dress codes of the individual race venues beforehand as these may vary between events. If in doubt, overdress. A three-piece suit is fail-safe racing wear, however, choosing suits and separates to be mixed and matched can show individuality

and, if chosen in summer-friendly fabrics, such as wool/linen blends, they’ll help you keep your cool in warmer weather. With a plain suit you can afford to go bolder with the colour and print of your shirting and accessories; the opposite, should you opt for a patterned suit. Use accessories such as hats, lapel pins, pocket squares or bow ties to add some character to your outfit. Break the Code Red, black, gold, white and beige: these are the colours that Chanel’s global creative make-up and colour designer Lucia Pica believes embody the brand and shaped the life of its founder, Gabrielle. As such, it’s these shades that form the crux of Chanel’s SS17 collection, Coco Codes, a contrasting line of both warm and dramatic hues. The highlight is the limited-edition Coco Code Exclusive Creation, a blush palette comprising two matte and two satin shades, best worn together for a radiant effect. £49 (chanel.com)

Do You Spaah? If you find yourself rushing around the country for meetings or cocktails with friends on a regular basis, you’ll be familiar with the dilemma of personal grooming taking a back-seat to punctuality and business prep (hello frantically re-applying make-up on the Virgin train as you pull into the station). Our latest secret weapon is handy beauty app USPAAH – currently only available in London (perfect for frantic dashes or weekend trips to the capital), but likely to expand up north soon – which allows you to book everything from blow-dries and manicures to massages and spray tans on-demand. This means that you’ll never need to book in advance or seek out an unfamiliar salon again – just tap the app and, within the hour, your personal therapist will arrive at your chosen location and, hey presto, you’re groomed to perfection. Eau, My

TREATMENT OF THE MONTH

In the world of perfumery, the bottle is often just as alluring as its contents but, during the 1920s, such a thing was rather uncommon, given that solid perfumes were the preferred form. For 2017, Diptyque has returned to the traditional style, presenting Eau Rose as a balm. Combining centifolia and damask roses with lychee, honey and cedar, the fragrant wax is placed directly on the skin for optimum performance. Those who prefer not to stray from tradition needn’t worry – the scent can be purchased in a liquid form, too. £30 (diptyqueparis.co.uk)

THAMEEN HAIR PERFUME WORDS: louisa castle

Hair perfume is a thing now. It’s been around for a couple of years now and, between you and me, I’d boxed it off as a fad, an unnecessary extravagance. And then I discovered Thameen in Selfridges (on a different quest and one for a later article). Founder and artistic director of Thameen, Basel Binjabr prides himself on the finest oils for his jewel-inspired collection. And he has applied these evocative scents to the very latest beauty trend which is here to stay. Blended with the fragrance (Peacock Throne was the one tantalising my olfactory connections) are luxurious hair treatments keratin, Moroccan Argan oil and honeyquat. Being the owner of a head of frizzfrequenting hair, I am familiar with the strengthening and restorative Keratin. And of Argan’s sheen benefits. Honeyquat, thought, is a new one. It is a quarternised conditioning agent made from honey which binds moisture to the hair for easy absorption – rumoured to have twice the moisturising ability of vegetable glycerine. The concept of hair fragrance makes sense though. The porous nature of hair makes it better than skin at holding fragrance longer. Slapped hands for me as I have been known to use my ordinary perfume on my hair, which will dry it, due to alcohol content. With these qualities added to the scent I am happy with the latest addition to my scent wardrobe. It’s the newest handbag essential and perfect for adding an uplift when dashing from work to drinks. Thameen hair fragrances, £85 from Selfridges

Smooth Operator Having changed the make-up game with its Radiant Creamy Concealer, Nars is introducing a new matte version for 2017 – and we’re expecting great things. Hailed by the brand as the “highest-coverage concealer yet”, the Soft Matte Complete Concealer has an oil-free formula that boasts natural-looking coverage and the ability to smooth imperfections. Pick it up from 1 February in 16 shades, ranging from chantilly to dark coffee. £23 (narscosmetics.co.uk)

The Simple Skincare Routine We’re constantly bombarded by skincare advice and ‘must-use’ products – but don’t these brands realise we don’t all have hours of pamper time to spare? Luckily, we’ve discovered the fabulous Tri-Balm from Frances Prescott, a luxurious triple-action facial balm which is a cleanser, exfoliator and moisturiser in one: perfect if you happen to be a time-poor multi-tasker. With a complex formulation incorporating premium ingredients derived from plants, flowers, vegetables and seeds, it can be used any time of day: all you have to do is put it on, and go. At last. £39 (francesprescott.com) 79

THE PRANCING HORSE

F

errari will be unveiling the brand new 812 Superfast, the most powerful and fastest Ferrari in the marque’s history, at the 87th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show. This new car not only introduces a plethora of innovative features, but is also particularly significant, as the V12 series marked the official start of the glorious prancing horse story in 1947, 70 years ago this year. Powered by a new 6.5-litre V12 engine that unleashes 800cv (788bhp), the 812 Superfast is the new benchmark in the mid-front-engined sports cars. The engine’s power is underscored by a full, rich exhaust sound that exploits the 80

acoustic clout delivered by its increased displacement. Maximum torque is 718 Nm @ 7,000 rpm, a significant 80 per cent of which is already available at 3,500 rpm, improving both driveability and pick-up even at low revs. These performance levels were achieved in part by adopting a 350-bar direct injection system for the very first time on a high-performance engine, and pairing it with variable geometry intake tracts conceptually derived from those of naturallyaspirated F1 engines. The 812 Superfast’s dual-clutch transmission has specific gear ratios which, combined with shorter up and down-shifting times between gears, sharpen throttle response still further.

Deep Water It might be on water but this boat does have one heck of an powerful motor. Aston Martin has finally launched their prototype boat, the AM37. The luxurious side of this boat, which can carry up to eight people, is the ultimate day cruiser designed and crafted with meticulous attention to detail. The sliding deck benefits from unique technology, which allows owners to completely cover and uncover the cockpit of the boat at the touch of a button. The wraparound windscreen is made from a single piece of sculpted glass

fluidly draped over the AM37’s foredeck. In addition, the AM37 can also be used overnight by converting the table into a comfortable double bed. The cabin is well appointed with mood lighting and airconditioning. A refrigerator, microwave oven, espresso machine and on-board lavatory mean that absolute comfort is assured. The 37-foot model is available in two versions: the AM37 with an estimated top speed of 45 knots and a choice of two 370 hp Mercury diesel or two 430 hp Mercury petrol engines; and the AM37S version with an estimated 50 knots derived from its twin 520 hp Mercury petrol engines. Allo Allo With the new F1 season fast approaching we cannot wait to see the flag drop in Melbourne and it has been a busy week with Sauber F1 and now Renault Sport Formula One Team launching its 2017 challengers. Powered by Renault Sport Racing’s R.E.17 power unit, the R.S.17 has no carry-over parts from the R.S.16. The team has worked from a clean sheet of paper to respond to Formula 1’s latest regulations. It is the first Formula 1 car designed from the outset by Renault Sport Racing from its two locations in Enstone, England and Viry-Châtillon, France. The R.S.17 was unveiled by race drivers Nico Hülkenberg and Jolyon Palmer, while third and reserve driver Sergey Sirotkin was also announced today. The car weighs around 145kg and produces from a 1.6 V6 engine more than 900BHP; it revs up to 15,000rpm... Madness! The F1 season begins on the 26th March in Australia.

After celebrating its centenary in 2016, the BMW Group turns its attention to the next 100 years, unveiling two jaw-dropping concept cars from MINI and Rolls-Royce W o r d s : G e o rg e C h a p man

82

Rolls-Royce BMW-owned car maker Rolls-Royce has revealed what its ultra-luxury cars might look like a century from now. The stunning concept, named the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100, spearheads a total of four ‘vision vehicles’ planned by the BMW Group in its centenary year. Revealed to the public at London’s Roundhouse Theatre, the car is almost six metres in length – roughly the same as the brand’s current Phantom flagship. Featuring swooping bodywork that almost fully encases its enormous 28-inch wheels, the design takes clear inspiration from both the Art Deco and post-war eras, albeit with a very modern twist. With its long bonnet mostly hollow to provide luggage space, power comes from two 250kw electric motors, located above each axle. Despite the lack of traditional V12 combustion engine, the Vision Next 100 is said to offer high performance along with zero emissions. Designed to operate fully autonomously, the cockpit lacks both a driver’s seat and a steering wheel. Speaking at the event, director of design Giles Taylor said: “The Rolls-Royce patron will

continue to be a famous figure in the future. I envision that the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100 will play a key role in these people’s lives, guiding and conveying them effortlessly through their life’s journey in an exquisite sanctuary where they can reflect in peace, ahead of arriving in the grandest style.” Rolls-Royce also suggests that the future of luxury mobility will see a return to coachbuilt production methods, where advanced manufacturing technologies will enable customers to become even more involved in the design of the shape and size of future models. Taking personalisation to new, unprecedented levels will ensure that every single car is completely bespoke. Owners will benefit from a highly intelligent virtual assistant, represented by a digital Spirit of Ecstasy known as Eleanor, which appears on a full-width transparent OLED display. The assistant learns the preferences of the owner and in turn advises on routes and points of interest. The car’s defining party piece, however, is saved for the destination. The entire roof of the car hinges upwards when the rear-hinged coach door is opened, allowing enough room for passengers to stand in the car without ducking. Then, a step emerges from the running board and a red light is projected on the ground – to simulate red carpet.

Mini At the other end of the BMW Group spectrum, MINI has revealed a centenary concept for the future. The MINI Vision Next 100 follows a philosophy of thoughtful use of the planet’s resources, while highlighting car sharing as a viable solution to personal urban mobility. In the future, fans of the brand will be able to call on a MINI tailored to their personal requirements, wherever they are. Available anytime of the day or night, it will even pick up its driver in a fully automated way. Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president of BMW Group Design, described MINI’s vision for the future: “MINI looks to offer smart and bespoke mobility in cities that engages all the senses. And in the future, you might not actually have to own a vehicle to enjoy the benefits.” The concept features some intriguing solutions to future mobility, such as the Cooperizer – a link between the driver and a form of digital intelligence. The device takes the form of the large circular dial that has become such a signature feature of MINI cockpits. Many existing MINI fans will also be pleased to learn that the driver remains the emotional centrepiece of future models – evidence that in a future seemingly obsessed with autonomy, this iconic, urban go-kart may evolve to become even more enjoyable to drive.

Travel news African Adventure If you’re looking to plan your summer adventure, we’d suggest checking out the 12-night Jet Safari from Time + Tide, an incredible journey taking you from Chongwe to Chinzomb in Zambia, and finally arriving at the stunning Miavana in Madagascar. Meaning ‘to reconcile’, Miavana lies on the island of Nosy Ankao, the largest of five islands which make up a reef-protected archipelago north-east of the mainland.

Effortlessly blending barefoot beach luxury and historic European renaissance style, the island is Paradise, of course – but it’s also the perfect place to snorkel and scuba dive, or go lemur trekking, whale watching and kite surfing. Personally, however, we like the sound of floating in our private pool with a cool glass of wine, gazing out at the ocean blue. Bliss. (timeandtideafrica.com)

Short haul vs long haul

Revive and Refresh Nestled in the beautiful Armagnac vineyards of south-west France, La Bastide is the perfect place to revive your mind and body for a fresh start this spring. Owned by Relais & Châteaux – meaning that it is, by definition, completely exquisite – the property boasts 25 rooms and suites, all within a sumptuously restored 18th century charterhouse. There are two large fireplaces for winter time and an outside Italian gallery for sunny days, plus a fabulous restaurant serving up local cuisine and – of course – a 500m² spa offering a myriad of rejuvenating natural body and facial treatments. Watch out spring, here we come. Two nights (inc. breakfast, dinner and massage) €698 for two guests (bastide-gasconne.com)

Short haul

Molitg-les-Bains, France For an exotic break with a hint of hedonism, we recommend a weekend at the beautiful Château de Riell in French Catalonia. Their current offering allows two guests to stay for two nights for €712 (£605), and includes buffet breakfasts, a gourmet à la carte dinner and a Spa Serenity Routine each, incorporating an aromatic massage, white clay weightless bath and access to the thermal pool and steam baths. Gin Palace If you’ve heard rumours that London now boasts a gin hotel (yes, that’s right – a gin hotel), your ears have not deceived you – the news is true, and it’s just as glorious as you’ve imaged. Sitting on London’s bohemian Portobello Road, The Distillery is a magnificent building dedicated to all things gin, with a working distillery, two bars, a museum, off-licence shop, gin-making experience and three boutique guest rooms. Start with cocktails in The Resting Room, the ground floor bar complete with menu from master distiller, Jake Burger, then move in to GinTonica on the first floor for a selection of the world’s finest gins (there are 100, so you’ll want to order lots of their Basque tapas dishes, too). Then, when things are starting to get a bit blurry, simply clamber up to your very own Portobello pad for the night. Gin-tastic. (the-distillery.london)

Long haul Vientiane, Laos

Inspired by its location between the Houses of Parliament, Presidential Palace and temple of Emerald Buddha, the latest hotel by the AKARYN group has brought stately grandeur to the heart of Vientiane in Laos. With only 32 suites, the hotel offers an exclusive sanctuary from the bustle of the city, along with six eateries, an Ayurah Wellness Centre, whisky cellar and cigar lounge. NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

W

e begin in the Big Apple, where the twice-annual month of fashion pilgrimage bursts into action along with a stampede of editors, bloggers, stylists and shutterbugs. Officially established in 1993, NYFW is nothing if not intense, with the avalanche of major American designers previewing their looks for the season ahead characterised by a side-helping of classic New-Yorker attitude.

Where to Stay Although NYFW is increasingly spread all over the city, you’ll likely save yourself some time by choosing a base reasonably close to the two main hubs: Skylight Clarkson Square (558 Washington Street) and Industria (40 Bethune Street), both in Greenwich Village. Just next door, in Chelsea, the fabulous High Line Hotel boasts a winning combination of convenience and style, sitting opposite the city’s High Line (an amazing linear park built on an elevated section of a disused railroad spur – if you haven’t been, go) in the 19th-century seminary of an Episcopal Church. The décor is described as ‘collegiate gothic’, which – once you set eyes on the Tiffany-style lamps, rewired 1920s telephones and Oriental rugs – seems about as perfect a label as there

“The firstfloor lounge plays host to the core clan, who drift in for a nightcap after dinner at the hotel’s restaurant” Must-have Light-weight and super-strong, the Amy Tote has four inside pockets, two pen slots and a central zip-up pocket to keep all the bits you accumulate at shows and launches organised, while looking ultra-stylish. Amy Tote Bag in Noir or Grey Saffiano Leather, £475, Stacy Chan London (stacychan.com)

Where to Eat While places like The Bowery and Gramercy Park hotels have traditionally been favourite hangouts for the movers and shakers of the Fashion Week crowd, this year it’s all about the recently-opened Beekman Hotel near City Hall. The first-floor lounge plays host to the core clan, who drift in for a nightcap after dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, Augustine, the latest addition to Keith McNally’s empire of high-class bistros.

has ever been. For views of the High Line itself and the people-watching opportunities it provides, try to get a room on the west-facing side – although, with all the fascinating Victorian and Edwardian antiques dotted about, you won’t be short on aesthetics either way. There’s no restaurant, and though the lobby’s Intelligentsia coffee bar offers cocktails for guests (not to mention what’s probably the city’s best espresso – a NYFW survival staple), you’ll need to explore elsewhere if you’re planning to party with the fashion elite. Nevertheless, when exhaustion sets in, you’ll be glad of the respite. It’s also right on the doorstep of the gallery district, if you have a moment to spare between shows (you won’t). london FASHION WEEK

N

ext, it’s on to London, where – as of this year – the Fashion Week hub has moved to The Store Studios at 180 Strand, with other main venues on the Southbank and at the Tate Modern. Organised by the British Fashion Council, this season’s most eagerly anticipated shows include the likes of Burberry, Topshop Unique, Anya Hindmarch and Charlotte Olympia.

“For further escapism, there’s a Natura Bissé spa on hand which offers a whole host of restorative and relaxation options”

Where to Stay We’ve chosen a hotel that’s a bit of an escape from the hustle and bustle, yet central to all the action. Overlooking Kensington Gardens, the Baglioni Hotel offers the perfect base in the heart of the city. With the feel of a private residence tucked away in Venice, the frescoed hotel offers 67 rooms with all the mod-cons you would expect, plus plenty of added flair and glamour. Always ask for a room with a view and, if you’re really looking for a home-from-home, the suites are simply delightful. The entrance is impressive, with chandeliers, mirrors and buttery-soft leather wing-back chairs, yet warm and welcoming. The rest of the décor can only be described as indulgent Italian, with rich, bold colours and textures, and bathrooms in black marble with metallic sinks, deep baths and powerful showers. For further escapism, there’s a Natura Bissé spa on hand which offers a whole host of restorative and relaxation options after your day at the shows or shops. Designed by Rebosio + Spagnulo, it truly offers an escape to relax body and mind – and, if the thought of a taxi or tube to the next show is too much, the hotel’s Maserati is at your disposal. (baglionihotels.com)

Must-have Since February is rarely a dry month in London town, be sure to pack a stylish, compact umbrella that’ll fit neatly into your handbag. We love this pretty piece from Fulton and the ever-stylish Burberry brolly. Fulton Floral Print Umbrella, £21 or Burberry Check Umbrella, £135 (selfridges.com)

Where to Eat Continuing our theme of escaping in the heart of the city, we would eat at Brunello, the hotel’s ground floor restaurant. It’s Italian, but with a twist. Unashamedly patriotic, it offers finedining deconstruction, private booths and knowledgeable staff. The Tiramisu is a must, and the wine-list is 500-strong, with a whole page dedicated to Prosecco – a given after a busy day being fabulous.

milan FASHION WEEK

E

stablished in 1958, Fashion Week in Italy’s capital La Moda is a whirlwind of passion and energy, with shows on the hour, every hour from home-grown mega-brands such as Armani, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana, Etro, Fendi, Ferragamo, Missoni, Moschino and Gucci, as well as emerging talents like Cristiano Burani, Gabriele Colangelo, Marco De Vincenzo, Chicca Lualdi and Fausto Puglisi.

Where to Stay Sandwiched neatly between Milan’s ‘golden quad’ (a shopping district crammed with more luxury brands than Anna Wintour’s wardrobe) and the city’s three most dazzling attractions – the Teatro della Scala, Galleria Vittoro Emmanuele II and Duomo – the Mandarin Oriental is a design devotee’s dream and about as luxury as it gets. Here, you are inextricably linked to the buzz of Fashion Week, with shows and presentations taking place within the hotel itself, and the stunning monochromed-marble Mandarin Bar, already – though the hotel is barely two years old – having assumed its place as watering hole of choice after a hectic day of shows. Housed within four elegantly redeveloped 18th century townhouses, the hotel is a masterpiece of traditional Milanese design fused with the brand’s trademark dash of the Orient, with 101 rooms and suites, plus two ‘speciality suites’, inspired by the work of Fornasetti and Ponti, and the utterly breath-taking 150sqm presidential suite. There’s also an abundantly luxurious spa (another excellent place to spot members of the fashion flock seeking a brief respite from the MFW marathon), while the same goes, of course, for Seta, the hotel’s acclaimed two-Michelin-star eatery – a nod to Milan’s predilection for hiding ornate secrets behind casual façades. (mandarinoriental.com)

Where to Eat Just a stone’s throw from the Mandarin Oriental is Restaurant VUN, a one-Michelin-star jewel nestled opposite the western entrance to the vaulted, gilded paradise that is the Galleria, on the ground floor of the Park Hyatt Milan. Thoroughly in keeping with the nature of our trip, these are the epitome of designer label dishes, with Neapolitan executive chef Andrea Aprea interweaving a taste for innovation with a love of Italy’s gastronomic tradition to create menus full of optical illusions and astonishing flavours. Take the opportunity to unwind, observe the beautiful people, and enjoy an unusually large glass of Dom Perignon or two. (ristorante-vun.it)

paris FASHION WEEK

A

nd where better to finish the party than the home of chic itself, gay Paree? Paris Fashion Week is based on a solid foundation of serious, technical French couture, though it’s also embracing the fashion world’s evolving needs faster than its peers, meaning it’s gaining a reputation as the new cool kid, too.

“You’ll be hard pushed to find a more fitting base than the most glamorous hotel in the world”

Where to Stay If you’re looking for the newest, hippest hotels on the Fashion Week scene, head straight for Hotel Grand Amour or Renaissance Paris Republique, both of which opened last year to raucous applause from the new generation of fashion royalty. But, if you want to do things properly, only Le Ritz will do. Closed for an achingly-long four-year refurbishment, the crème de la crème of the fashion flock were forced to find alternative lodgings until its reopening last summer. Their collective sigh of relief was almost audible, and now the bars and suites once frequented by Marcel Proust, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Jean-Paul Sartre are once again the Fashion Week playground of Anna, Kate and Karl.

For a start, Le Ritz boasts the world’s only Chanel spa. If that doesn’t already present a fashionable match made in heaven, what does? And then there’s its location, overlooking the octagonal border of the Place Vendôme in the 1st arrondissement, nestled amongst the city’s grandest jewellery houses and beside the Rue St-Honoré fashion boutiques. Add to this the fact that the Fashion Week hub – the Carrousel du Louvre – is little more than 800m away, and you’ll be hard pushed to find a more fitting base than the most glamorous hotel in the world. (ritzparis.com)

Where to Eat Talk to those in the know, and they will tell you that Café Castiglione (almost opposite Le Ritz) is the fashion-industry canteen during Fashion Week, located in the thick of the action and filled with table upon table of editors, designers, models and other assorted famous faces. Surprisingly, it’s nothing fancy – a standard Parisian brasserie that’s all red velvet banquettes and cosy charm, with a menu dotted by club sandwiches and Croque Monsieurs, not to mention a burger so good that many a celebrity (Sofia Coppola and former Vogue editor-at-large André Leon Talley, among others) has declared it their favourite. Austrian escape In search of a convenient, self-catered ski-break, Melissa Porter and her son discover the delights of the Austrian Alps

D

oes anyone else despair at the number of school holidays and the seemingly constant administration required to organise entertainment for our little munchkins? And don’t get me started on the related costs for kids’ clubs and nanny cover, while we’re all juggling work commitments with the responsibility of parenthood. This got me thinking about an alternative option for a short, sharp, self-catering, snowfilled ski holiday. Somewhere I could fly to directly from Manchester, in a couple of hours, swift airport transfers, excellent ski school facilities with plenty of child-friendly slopes and glorious food. Cue Austria. My curiosity about this country was piqued by a recent Savills’ Spotlight report, ‘Alpine Property Market 2015/6’, which revealed a national house price growth of 41 per cent since 2008, compared to falls of 0.9 per cent in France. I’m also aware that Austrian ski properties are up to 50 per cent cheaper than resort property in the Swiss and French Alps. Pierce and I boarded the very pleasant and incomprehensibly inexpensive Thomas Cook flight from Manchester and, in just over two hours, we had landed in snowy Innsbruck: the gateway to our skiing adventures. We hired a cool car, programmed into the sat nav our destination of Kühtai, Austria’s highest ski resort (made famous by the C4 show The Jump), and – just 30 minutes later – we’d arrived. That’s an incredible concept; being able to leave Manchester at breakfast time and enjoy the 80km of slopes soon after lunchtime. We were basing ourselves for the week at a Kristall Spaces development: 2020 residences, that are incredibly well designed, both aesthetically and functionally. Our two-bedroom apartment was accessed via a lift and designed

with an alpine feel. I appreciated that some of their traditional furniture and design concepts had been combined with contemporary twists, such as parquet floors and under-floor heating. The kitchen was well-appointed and included rather fabulous Miele appliances, and the Hans Grohe bathrooms received top marks from Pierce, who enjoyed showering while looking out over the wrap-around balconies at the white sparkling 3000m peaks. The building also included a fun Finnish sauna and soothing steam bath: the perfect place for me to meditate and check over each day’s bruises and bumps. Curious about what else the Austrian property and rental market had to offer, we decided to enjoy a little road trip to two sister properties: the first, a 15-minute tree-lined trip down the mountain (with starting prices at €209,000) at Mountain Lake Resort Ötztal, in the ancient village of Oetz. Well worth a visit for anyone interested in architecture and history. The second was a little further away, but with all you could ever need and the price-tag to go

with it (prices start at €638,940 for a twobedroom apartment). Mountain Spa Residences provides on-site concierge, airport pick-up and chauffeur service. And, with the luxury of a ski-out location, the infamous Nassereinbahn ski lift is just 500m away. What I like about this investment, is that Austrian tourism is growing year on year, and the Tyrol region registered almost a 10 per cent annual increase in visitor numbers in the first half of 2016, largely thanks to guaranteed skiing from November to May. Even when the snow has long gone, as a dual-season resort, Oetz offers a wide variety of activities in the summer, such as canoeing, climbing, mountain biking, tennis and golf: all Pierce’s favoured sports. Could this become our second home? Regardless of whether you’re a beginner, advanced or seasoned skier, all three areas have a whole labyrinth of different trails and slopes, offering something for everyone. What’s more, Austria’s region of the Arlberg is set to become one of the largest ski regions in the world, following a whopping £35million investment. The Arlberg will boast a total of 305km of slopes, overtaking the French regions of Val D’Isere (300km), Tignes Espace Killy (300km) and Grand Massif (265km). New apartments in Austrian ski resorts come with a rental obligation.Tax authorities waive the 20 per cent VAT on the purchase price in return for owners agreeing to rent out their properties (propertysaleaustria.co.uk)

Weekend away … Penolva by St Mawes, Cornwall WORDS: Gemma Knight

I

f your idea of heaven is picture-perfect, windswept vistas dotted with fishing boats, quaint cottages and rolling hills – imbued with the distant echoes of smugglers and a hint of literary romance – then it might be best not to visit the little-known Cornish idyll that is St Mawes. You’ll never leave. Indeed, it was all but kicking and screaming that my friends and I were prized from its soothing, seaside embrace after a weekend there in January, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It’s little wonder: from the moment you round the dainty headland on the tip of Cornwall’s Roseland Peninsula and see the little village, the Carrick headlands and a vast expanse of sea laid out before you, a spell is well and truly cast. Situated on the east bank of St Mawes Bay, you could at first be forgiven for thinking you’d stumbled upon an unassuming cream-coloured bungalow as you crunch to a halt on Penolva’s gravel driveway. Designed to neatly fit the steep incline on which the enormous house sits, the front door opens directly onto the first floor, where a long corridor stretches right and left to each of the four enormous double bedrooms – the two master suites located at opposing ends in rounded towers with neat conical roofs – and a wide, sweeping staircase drops away to the ground floor below. Freshly renovated, the base of the stairs deposits you into a pretty dining room, to the left of which is the sprawling, art-filled openplan drawing room (complete with gleaming grand piano) while, to the right, you’ll find

94

pantry and farmhouse kitchen, both filled with the warmth of an AGA. Everything is impeccably finished, comfortable and plush without seeming overdone – but the real treasure is the views, which flood through the French doors and colossal bay windows lining Penolva’s southern façade as its labyrinthine gardens drop away to the water’s edge. As you might expect, Penolva – Cornish for ‘lookout on the headland’ – boasts quite the pedigree. Built in the 1960s by Dick Wilkins, a friend of the Queen Mother, its private slipway was the very spot which welcomed the royal family ashore from HMY Britannia on the many occasions they came to visit him. Now the house is owned by private rental company St Mawes Retreats – but a phonecall away should you need anything during your stay, and more than happy to offer tips and advice on exploring the local area. And then, of course, there’s the concierge service, through which home visits from private chefs, spa therapists and yoga teachers can be arranged on request. There’s no shortage of opportunities to explore outdoors – St Mawes and its pretty harbour, with its cosy, quiet pubs and corner shops, is less than five minutes’ walk from the house, while St Mawes Castle – a picture-perfect fort built by Henry VIII in 1542 – sits a humble hundred metres up the road from its front door. Nevertheless, between family dinners, sundowners on the terrace, board games, singalongs, crabbing on the jetty and the occasional massage, you might just find the outside world loses its appeal entirely. From £4,500 per week (stmawesretreats.co.uk/properties/penolva)

...with Ian Moss, Head chef at Oddfellows On The Park What is your favourite ingredient? Venison. It’s the best meat available. It’s delicious and healthy – a rare combination. It suits the way I like to source ingredients too – it’s readily available, local, and generally wild. You know it’s a beast that has lived a happy life. What is your favourite food? Any game dishes. My move to the north west from London took me away from the luxury of produce vans that would hit the city from the continent and it taught me the best lesson in my career: that we have the most brilliant produce right on our doorstep. Game is top of my list because it varies so much with the seasons. Also cheese. Any cheese. Stinky cheese, goats’ cheese, sheep’s cheese, French, English, Lancashire, Cornwall – all cheese! I have a cheese obsession. What is your favourite piece of kitchen equipment? My knife. For slicing, filleting and butchery I need my Victorianox 10 inch slicer. I’d be lost without it. What is your desert Island recipe? Corned beef hash. I love it! Absolute comfort food. Funnily enough, the recipe I use is from a recipe book of my wife’s called ‘30 easy recipes for people who can’t cook’! It’s a winner though: sometimes the simplest cooking can be brilliant.

Just the Tonic We love our gin, and are thrilled with the abundance of small producers coming to the fore – so, naturally, we’re very excited to hear that Bothy artisan gin is supporting the conservation of the ancient pine trees whose needles give it its flavour. Nestled in the Angus Glens, Bothy Original is infused with the finest botanicals including heather, milk thistle, hawthorn root and rosemary, as well as the all-important pine needles. When founder Kim Cameron heard about the Woodland Trust’s appeal for funds to buy and restore Loch Arkaig pine forest, she jumped on board. The Loch Arkaig appeal was launched in April 2016 to raise £500,000 to fund the purchase, and a further £4m to restore the forest, which has been a filming location for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, the award-winning distiller is infusing its classic Bothy Original with Arkaig pine needles and donating £1 a bottle to help conserve and regenerate the forest. So, drink gin and help protect the environment. What more do you need? (woodlandtrust.org.uk; ginbothy.co.uk) 97

SPOTLIGHT ON... UPSTAIRS AT THE GRILL Words: GLENDA KINSELLA

W

e arrived at Upstairs at the Grill early on a Sunday evening, kindly shown into a room full of people happily relaxing after their various extended Sunday lunches. We were introduced to our friendly waitress, Emily, and settled at our table with menus and drinks – the latter advised by the head barman, Andy, who recommended a lovely South African red for my daughter and a cheeky Jameson whisky served with pomegranate soda for myself (a delightful change from the normal choice of mixer). In fact, we could have chatted to Andy all evening; his knowledge is vast and he is so enthusiastic, it really is infectious. As we indulged in our pre-dinner drinks, we took note of the restaurant. Intimate and classic in design, with just a single simple flower and candle as a centrepiece, it would be ideal for romantic meals. The bar area is very much male in feel, with earthy colours and copper accessories and, as far as decor is concerned, the toilets are very quirky and worth a visit – but I shall leave it at that. But back to the food. To start, my daughter chose the Arnold Bennett omelette: wonderfully presented, the same way it was to Arnold Bennett all those years ago, and accompanied by the story of how the dish originated at The Savoy. I decided on the hand-picked Devonshire crab cocktail – a bed of lettuce, simply dressed and topped with a delicious mixture of crab and parsley. Given the day of the week, the only thing my daughter had on her mind was Sunday roast.

98

This was chicken accompanied by crispy roasties, cauliflower cheese, creamed cabbage, honeyed carrots, parsnips and a delicious red wine gravy. She even went as far as saying it was possibly the best she’d ever had – understandably, I haven’t forgiven her yet. For me it was the vegetable wellington, a large portion and served beautifully, but with pastry so light you’d think it’d been made by fairies. Even though this is a grill house, with dishes like this you can see why it appeals to everyone. After such a hearty main, I was happy with the vanilla and rum’n’raisin ice-cream, but the baked New York cheesecake served with locally sourced fruits had caught my daughter’s eye. Its lovely thick base and creamy topping were gone in seconds, which is testament to how lovely it was. Upstairs is on one of the busy, bustling streets of Chester, opposite one of the most popular bars the city has – however, once you are inside, there is a very calming feeling and you can easily forget that you’re in the centre The staff really make this place, though. Having listened to other diners, I think we were the only ones who weren’t returning guests. I believe that is testament to the lovely staff, the food and the fact they keep the popular dishes on the menu. The diners sitting next to us were visiting the city for their wedding anniversary, eight years after getting engaged here, having exactly the same meal that they enjoyed eight years ago. They said it was just as delicious as they had remembered. Upstairs at the Grill, 70 Watergate Street, Chester, CH1 2LA (01244 344883; upstairsatthegrill.co.uk)

Top London Chef arrives at Victor’s Moving up north, Lee Stretton speaks about his new role at Victor’s Eatery Hale and what he can bring to the table

A

s part of the East Coast Concepts restaurant group, Victor’s Eatery Hale is known for its American execution of international cuisine. Victor’s flavours and ingredients are determined by the East Coast’s diverse gastronomic experience, with a distinct European flourish, and now they welcome a new executive chef, Lee Stretton, to the team to further strengthen their offering. Lee has an impressive portfolio of experience, having worked as head chef at Fortnum & Mason, and executive chef at the Wardorf Astoria, Browns Hotel and Daphne’s Restaurants. His career has also taken him to Kuwait, where he worked as head chef at Villa Moda, Le Caprice, The Ivy and The Savoy Hotel. New to Manchester, we asked Lee why the move to the north. “My move to Manchester was never really planned. A friend of mine introduced me to James Hitchen, the name behind East Coast Concepts, and James explained his vision for the future of the restaurant group and the planned expansion.” The group now includes Neighbourhood in Spinningfields, Manchester, Neighbourhood Liverpool and Victor’s Eatery Hale, with the location of a new venue to be announced soon.

100

“Having chatted to James over coffee, I was hooked straight away,” Lee explains. “I got on a train a week later to look around the restaurants and dined in each one. I was impressed and excited by what I saw and tasted, and then spent the next few days exploring Manchester.” Lee took to living and working in south Manchester from the start. “I have to say I love living here; people are friendlier, there’s a lot to do and I’m discovering new things about the city centre and Hale area every day”. Lee also plans to have a profound influence on the menu at Victor’s. “I’ll be flying to New York with James and we’ll be eating our way through the city,” he says. “The trip will help us to define the food concept and provide inspiration for the Victor’s menu, so there are very exciting times ahead for me and the East Coast Concepts brand. It goes without saying that it all comes together because of the commitment and talent of the whole team.” The next big thing for the restaurant group is the unveiling of its newest site, and – by the end of 2017 – the plan is for three more. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of all the little things that are special to us; items which should be cherished often get separated, lost around the house or forgotten about. Meminio has thus created a memory case, designed for storing family keepsakes all in one place. Whether it’s photos, certificates of achievement or your child’s first pair of baby shoes, the beautiful bonded leather case comes with separate compartments for organising memorabilia. It can also be personalised with a gold embossed luggage tag, making for the perfect gift item. From £120 (meminio.com)

Join the Army After much demand for mini versions of his seminal designs (most notably from celebrity couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West), Olivier Rousteing – the visionary creative director of Balmain – decided to launch a collection exclusively for kids last year. The SS17 collection is now here and making its debut in the Harrods childrenswear department, comprising stylish military-inspired clothing and accessories for both girls and boys aged six to 14 years old. Signature pieces include Japanese denim jeans and quilted bomber jackets. From £120 (harrods.com)

Baby I’m from New York, one paw in the air for the big city, Street lights, big dreams all looking pretty, No place in the world that can compare, Put your paws in the air, everybody say yeah, yeah, yeah!

O

h my, I seem to have got a little carried away there! I’m actually from Cheshire and that’s pretty cool, too, especially now Central Bark has opened its doors and brought a little of the Big Apple’s charms with it. Tony and Tania Golden, originally from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, have made all our doggy dreams come true by opening an enormous 14,000 sq ft warehouse, converted into a combined dog café, grooming parlour, overnight cage-free boarding house and day-care complex, all under one roof. Just pawfect. As you know, I absolutely adore the beach – while Anji soaks up the UK sunshine as Aston builds sandcastles, I love to put paw prints in the sand and go splashing in the sea. But, when we can’t get to the beach or the weather is just being the UK weather, we head to the Central Bark beachthemed café, where I feel instantly like I’m on my holidays, with bench seating, umbrellas and sand-coloured flooring. At the beach café you’ll meet Tony and Tania’s dog Alfie, whom they rescued from a shelter, whose role is that of main meet-and-greeter – and, boy, was he born to do it. Meanwhile, the doggy day-care service provides dogs with lots of fun activities, plus loving care and the chance to socialise with other furry friends. Before being allowed into Central Bark, all dogs have to go through a personality test to assess our social skills, which I feel is invaluable for our safety – although, as yet, our owners don’t have to undergo this process. I can’t think why. Central Bark also welcomes dogs from local shelters (which, as a rescue pom, is a cause close to my heart), as well as humans wanting to come along and meet them in a dedicated, supervised area of the dog zone, in the hopes of finding a doggie to give a forever home. As they have pawsome boarding facilities, the centre even temporarily fosters some of the rescue pooches while they wait for their pawfect match. Until Next time, Love & Licks

The classroom Charity Cycle Generous pupils from Beech Hall School handed over a cheque of £12,000 to Park Lane School. having raised the money undertaking a 230-mile bike ride. Park Lane School is a specialist school in Macclesfield for pupils with communication and interaction needs. The money raised will go towards the renovation of the school’s hydrotherapy pool, an essential resource for critical physiotherapy as well as facilitating pupils’ independence in the water, which may not always be possible on land. The team of cyclists: Harry Lyons, Louis Brocklehurst, Otis Palmes, Sam Timson, Brad Monroe, Sam Thornton-West and Ewan Jones, were thanked in front of all the students, staff and their own parents, who attended to watch the cheque presentation. (beechhallschool.org)

Football Figures Amid much excitement, and extremely chilly temperatures, The Firs School, Chester headed to the home of Liverpool Football Club to learn about numbers. The children had the opportunity to sit in the press conference chairs, manager’s chair in the dugout and the famous Kop stand. It was here that the teachers really showed their flexibility, with a range of activities designed to look at measurement, area, big numbers and calculations. Year 6 worked out how long it would take for an individual Mexican wave to take place in the stand (54 minutes) and how many screws there are in all of the 12,499 Kop seats combined (435,000!). The day finished with the school singing You’ll Never Walk Alone. (firsschool.net)

Refugee Status Sixth form pupils at Stonyhurst College welcomed Sarah Teather, director of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) to speak about the work helping refugees all over the world that are in desperate need, and shared potential ways in which the school can get involved to help people local to our area. Sarah then went on to meet with the College’s ‘Faith that does Justice’ group who have been working with local refugees welcoming them to the college where they toured our collections and chapels and learnt about the area. Sarah’s day concluded with a walk around the Stonyhurst Collections. Sarah was especially moved by the Oscar Romero relic, which she described as “incredible”. The school will be keeping in touch with Sarah and the JRS to assist in as many ways possible. (jrs.net; stonyhurst.ac.uk) 107

Suzie Dickens, the event organiser says: “It's about connecting the area together, raising the profile of the county and supporting what Cheshire has to offer, whether through the buying and selling of bespoke products or connecting local businesses. It is also about keeping Cheshire desirable and relevant and nurturing creative businesses, encouraging them to stay and thrive in their own county”. Simply Cheshire only supports local businesses and provides them with a platform to promote and sell their work to a wider local audience. Suzie feels privileged to be including artists such as Tone von Krogh, Dionne Swift, Rebecca Lawley and Rebecca Broad from White Light Ceramics; clothing ranges from Cashmere and Cotton, Rachel Wears, Jane Mitchell and Silver Pink; and delicious artisan

Reduce the risk Paul Daine, managing director of Premium Collections, shares his thoughts on how the Brexit vote will affect businesses who grant credit

T

here are many of us who are still in shock at how the Brexit vote went. But the consumers and businesses of Britain have to come to terms with the consequences of the leave vote and get on with both their personal and business lives. Undoubtedly, if you were to put ten business owners in a room and ask them for their opinions, you would get ten different answers. For businesses that grant credit to their clients for either goods or services, the risk of not getting paid is as high now as it was at the start of the recession in 2008. A recent survey revealed that around a third of all business payments are overdue, and the value can be higher for businesses that export. So, how can you minimise the risk of nonpayment? It is undoubtedly now more important than ever that all businesses have a clearly

defined credit management policy that sets out the processes required to chase late payments and escalate from their own credit control team. If they are not large enough to have their own in-house department, then Premium Collections can certainly help. Our team of highly trained experts is on hand to assist you and is skilled in national and international debt collection. My advice to any business looking at chasing debtors – wherever they are in the world – is to act quickly and act professionally: ensure that you have a strict procedure in place and if in any doubt, talk to us. We will do our best to help. For further information contact Paul Daine Telephone 0161 962 4695 or email paul.daine@premiumcollections.co.uk (premiumcollections.co.uk)

Future Protection Tristan Hartey explains why having a safety net, in the form of Income Protection Insurance, is more essential than you might ever have realised

I

ncome protection insurance is a long-term insurance policy that provides a monthly payment if you can’t work because you’re ill or injured, and typically pays out until you can start working again, or until you retire, die or the end of the policy term – whichever is sooner. Income protection covers most illnesses that leave you unable to work, either in the short or long term (depending on the type of policy and its definition of incapacity). It’s key to note that there is a waiting period before any payments start, so you generally set payments to start after your sick pay ends, or after any other insurance stops covering you. The longer you wait, the lower the monthly payments.

Employment and Support Allowance

The State does offer an Employment and Support Allowance (ESA); however this is a very basic form of monthly income. Even though the average UK household spends £1,503 a month, any ESA would only provide up to £125.05 a week. This figure is of course based on personal circumstances such as income, the type of ESA you’re entitled to, and so on, and therefore you would really need to tighten the purse strings. That is why we would always recommend looking at an income protection insurance policy. Worryingly, half of all Britons questioned for a study by insurer Zurich displayed a classic ‘it won’t happen to me’ attitude to being unable to work through a disability. However, this isn’t always the case and having an accident or suffering an illness that prevents you from

working could happen to anyone, at any time – that’s why it’s crucial to have the right protection in place to ensure you can still cover your monthly outgoings. If you have recently started a family or purchased a house, it is more important than ever to have the relevant protection in place so for further advice please call us on 0808 168 5866.

The satisfying pop of the cork, the gentle glug of the golden nectar cascading into the glass, the unsightly pools of water left all over the table as you pluck it, tepid, from the melting ice bucket… Oh. Has the Government thrown in the towel on Britain as a nation of homeowners? W ORDS : C r i s p i n H a r r i s MRICS

T

he Government’s recent Housing White Paper placed great emphasis on helping people to rent a home, which is a positive move but is in apparent contradiction with the 3 per cent stamp duty surcharge introduced on second homes in April 2016. The surcharge was intended to deter buy-to-let investors to the benefit of first-time buyers, and the change in tone from the Housing Minister heralds the death knell for the flexible ownership model that benefited the baby boomers and Generation X. The Government has a real drive to build more homes, which we haven’t seen in a while, so I hope that this new age of tenure neutrality won’t just replace 30 years of failings to build enough homes for people to buy. Measures focused on providing bespoke housing for older people and consideration of how to promote efficient use of existing homes are a positive, but it would have been refreshing to see stamp duty addressed, for example a stamp duty holiday for first-time buyers to aid overall affordability. It would have been even better to see an easing across the board of stamp duty levels to really rejuvenate the property market. The high value property market continues to suffer, which reduces liquidity across all levels.

Home and Away Interior design-led hotels are not just something to write home about. Camilla Apcar reports on the hoteliers with their own shops and furniture collections that recreate the holiday spirit back home

I

t is every general manager’s dream and worst nightmare, all in one question from a guest: “Where can I buy this exact table lamp, doorknob, cushion or armoire?” Yet the savviest hoteliers already have a contingency plan for such compliments – a shop on site or online, a little black book that holds their interior designer’s contact details for private commissions or their own line of homewares. The style stakes set by increasingly design-led hotels are ever rising, and travellers looking to bring a piece of their favourite hotel home can find not just the same glassware and trinkets from suites, but entire bedroom sets, floorings and finishing flourishes, too. Two significant interior collections from hospitality behemoths launched last year: Soho Home, by Soho House Group, and Eden Being, through Eden Rock Group and Oetker Collection (responsible for The Lanesborough and Le Bristol Paris). “Eden Being is about capturing memories, the unique special something that will forever remind you of your time at one of Oetker Collection’s properties,” says Eden Being CEO Daniela Ott.

Among the e-tailer’s most desirable pieces are Louis XV and XVI furnishings from Le Bristol Paris, with an edit of wooden chests and consoles, Fontainebleau headboards and stools that conjure supreme decadence and elegance. Creating one’s own 18th-century parlour or boudoir is but a few clicks away; the site can be filtered by hotel or product, with furniture then made to order in France by 18th-century specialist Taillardat. The comforts of five Soho Houses became available online at Soho Home in September. Perhaps the most distinctive look is from the Oxfordshire Soho Farmhouse, where “we sourced lots of vintage pieces locally from Tetbury and surrounding antique shops,” says design director Linda Boronkay. Products include a chic ceramic collection plus sofas and armchairs made by craftsmen in the north of England, using traditional techniques. Designer hotels have their own solutions at the ready. While many of the interiors and amenities at Armani’s hotel in Dubai are bespoke, guests enamoured with its muted and checkered style can visit Armani/ Casa’s showrooms in Dubai’s Design District or at Chelsea Harbour’s Design Centre. Every piece is designed by Giorgio himself. The keenest followers can employ the brand’s dedicated interior design studio (ensuring luxe living without the risk of one’s home resembling a showroom itself). At Palazzo Versace Dubai, each piece of furniture has been designed exclusively for the hotel, drawing inspiration from the fashion house’s

archive. “The interiors showcase the Versace lifestyle through the contemporary eye of artistic director Donatella Versace, where everything is opulent,” says general manager Sandra Tikal. Barely a head can turn without spotting the trademark Medusa head and Greek key motifs, and although bathrobes and towels are always popular requests, it’s the peacock, horse and falcon cushions that really attract attention. These can only be purchased at Palazzo Versace Dubai itself. Chinaware, vases and lumiere

glasses embellished with a 3D Medusa can be found in Versace Home boutiques, including on Sloane Street. In the two Imperial suites on the Palazzo’s top floors, everything is available to order from the latest Versace Home collections. “From the moment anyone enters, they are mesmerised,” says Tikal. “The majestic bedhead designs are a favourite with both men and women, as are the chandeliers and wallpapers.” The first suite showcases the plush, neoclassical Vanitas collection, with intricately patterned poufs, elegant table lamps and panelled sofas. The linear Via Gesù in the second suite features chairs with swirling arms and plenty of modern Medusas. Top interior designers have long lent their expertise to the hotel industry: Patricia Urquiola at Lake Como Il’s Sereno, Marcel Wanders in South Beach and Manhattan, and Axel Vervoordt soon to come at the Bayerischer Hof in Munich. And when COMO Point Yamu opened in Phuket in November 2013, Paola Navone wrought her first hotel interior project with aplomb.

“What’s important nowadays is to be differentiated from other hotels. Design has a strong influence”

130

Point Yamu’s general manager Andy Kunz says guests often enquire about even the smallest of details. The hotel is happy to oblige, whether giving up spares, redirecting guests to the hotel’s shop that sells a selection of Navone’s wares (glassware and china are particularly popular), or putting them in touch with the artists whose work lines the walls. “We recently had a gentleman from Dubai stay, whose daughter liked the furniture so much that he bought a variety for her new house as a present,” Kunz recalls. “What’s important nowadays is to be differentiated from other hotels. It’s usually the people and level of service that allow this, but design also has a strong influence. Point Yamu is very different from any property you

could find in Phuket or Thailand. It’s a move away from the sort of ‘cookie-cutter’ rooms that you might find elsewhere.” Kunz continues: “In the past you’d take a picture and make a photo album... some people might take a bit of sand from beaches they’ve stayed at – this is just the same.” The interior designer of Singita’s 12 chic safari camps and lodges across Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa is Boyd Ferguson. Since 1993 he has defined and redefined the safari aesthetic with natural materials and contemporary-cumtribal panache. In another on-site wonder emporium, his homewares – and locally handcrafted pieces – are stocked in Singita’s colonial

farmhouse shops. The devil does, sometimes, lie in the detail. During a major renovation of The Franklin in Knightsbridge last summer, Anouska Hempel used Lapicida’s new collection of stone accessories for floors, walls, tables and objects. “Lapicida is a marvellous oldfashioned company with an awful lot of sensational workmanship at its fingertips,” says Hempel. “The hotel is supposed to look like an Italian home in London, so anybody can have a go at that with ease.” The ultimate souvenir. CASE STUDY

A Home For

heritage We look at three of the most recent designer flagship boutiques to benefit from extensive refurbishments, taking inspiration from their esteemed histories to create sumptuous interiors infused with bygone charm

I

n April last year, Valentino joined the catwalk of buildings on Old Bond Street, that boulevard of high luxury which snakes its way through London’s exclusive Mayfair district. Creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli teamed up with none other than world-renowned British architect Sir David Chipperfield to re-imagine the store concept. “We’ve tried to reflect the history of Valentino, a history wrapped up with Rome, glamour and, in a way, with another time. The challenge has been to bring this into contemporary mode without losing the essence of Valentino,” explains Chipperfield. “In the Bond Street store we also wanted to find continuity with the architecture of the street rather than make the building a fashion store billboard. The new five-storey façade engages with the surrounding historic streetscapes. The openings, framed in Portland stone, provide consistency with the geometry of neighbouring buildings while a row of round columns crowning the building

134

echoes the attic typology prevalent in the area,” concludes Chipperfield. The same month, Bulgari reopened its New Bond Street boutique, showcasing a new architectural design concept developed by flamboyant American architect Peter Marino. Marino focused on creating separate ambiances; for example, the men’s area evokes the atmosphere of a ’50s or ’60s gentlemen’s club. Bulgari’s

heritage emanates from the fine marbles, Italian-designed furniture, and the magnificent Carlo Scarpainspired staircase, which is surrounded by bronze latticework based on the floor pattern of the Pantheon in Rome. Exceeding expectations, as always, Marino includes a gesture to the present in the ceiling vaults, which are inspired by British architect Sir John Soane. He manages to achieve a perfect timelessness even out of a sprawling 130-year brand history. Another impressive feat from Marino, basking in a pastel glow at 160 New Bond Street, is the Dior flagship. The four-storey emporium is beacon of French elegance which exudes the fanciful spirit of Paris’s Hôtel Particuliere while staying faithful to the spirit of the original building with the addition of a conservatory. Marino has created a palace which one could imagine Dior residing in, as the couturier himself once said:

“Living in a house that doesn’t reflect who you are is akin to wearing someone else’s clothes”. This residential style echoes Marino’s overhaul of the Chanel horology and fine jewellery boutique in November 2015, which was based on Gabrielle Chanel’s Parisian townhouse and her apartment at 31 Rue Cambon. It is a lavish yet intimate space filled with contemporary art, antiques and, at the centre, a stunning Goossens’ rock crystal and bronze staircase encircling a glass lift.

with Bulgari Though all of these heritageinspired interiors are equally appealing – from Chanel’s reflection of a Parisian townhouse to Dior’s echoes of Paris’s Hôtel Particuliere – there is something so fabulously playful and dreamy about the Bulgari boutique’s 1960s gentlemen’s club vibe that it’s truly irresistible. From the pale pink silks and burnt orange velvets to the bold blending of marble and parquet, it breaks all the rules – the absolute essence of La Dolce Vita.

W E BELIEV E That change is as good as a rest Believe it or not, our Henley kitchen used to be seen as our most traditional, our most classic, and our most refined collection. But we knew it had hidden depths. So we changed the hardware. We introduced a painted finish. And we took it from the country and led it to the city. This is Henley, redefined. Now available in both oak and painted.

J

aney Butler Interiors and the other design companies within The Llama Group have been admirers of Baxter Furniture and Lighting for many years, having been personally invited to their showroom in Milan, and factory near Lake Como in Italy, several times. Further to this, Janey Butler is very proud to announce this latest high-level collaboration. Baxter is one of the finest and most exclusive designers and manufacturers of fine leather and suede in the world, using only the finest leather for their products. With decades of history, combined with some of the best furniture designers in the world, the result is a breathtaking and innovative product range, which Janey Butler Interiors are already specifying into several of their current luxury, high-end residential projects. Janey Butler Interiors, and the other five companies that currently make up The Llama Group, are expanding and doubling the size of their luxury showroom and architectural design studio at the prestigious Capesthorne Hall – just outside Alderley Edge – to over 10,000 sq ft. As such, they are showcasing Baxter in their stylish new

reception area and throughout the extended design studio, as their newest and most high-profile collaboration within the companies’ latest expansion programme. Janey Butler explains: “Having many key pieces within our new design studio layout, showcasing the stunning Baxter range of furniture and lighting will enable our clients to experience first hand why we have selected Baxter as our latest principle partner for this key expansion phase for The Llama Group.” (janeybutler.co.uk; llamagroup.co.uk)

ALL THE TEA IN CHINA Much-loved heritage brand Wedgwood has just announced a new three-year partnership with none other than the Royal Horticultural Society – a collaboration which will see the brand showcase new products and experiential retail concepts across three of the RHS’s flower shows: Chelsea, Chatsworth and our very own Tatton Park. Amongst these will be the first ever Wedgwood garden, created by Sam Ovens, as well as a new teaware range called ‘Wonderlust’, inspired by flowers and plants from around the globe and set to take a star turn at the three flower shows’ tea conservatory pop-ups. And, since it was John Wedgwood, son of Wedgwood founder Josiah, who founded the RHS in 1804, it seems this is rather a match made in heaven. (wedgwood.co.uk; rhs.org.uk)

Focus on... BUILD A GARDEN TOWER Put your old planting containers to work

R

eclaiming old material and finding fun ways to make it new again is an easy way to contribute to a sustainable community. All gardeners have a stack of old garden containers tucked away, which makes this garden hack a no-brainer for the garden addict. When plastic containers get old they become faded and warped from the sun, but they have not out-lived their usefulness. Here’s how to bring them back to life to build a tower.

Supplies Needed • Six garden containers of various sizes, from large to small • Non-toxic paint • Organic soil • Organic fertilizer • Suggested plants for this garden hack include sweet potato vine, petunia, and euphorbia • Tall stake

How to 1. Your design’s location can be on soil or a solid surface, but it needs to be very flat and level. Because of its height, this container tower could lean against a fence or wall, which will offer it additional protection from heavy winds. 2. Position the largest garden container on the bottom to function as the foundation. 3. Fill this container with organic planting soil. Do not overfill; leave 2 inches of room at the top of the container so that the medium garden container will fit inside the larger container. 4. Insert a tall, thin garden stake in the soil, then feed the next largest container onto the garden stake by threading the stake through its drainage hole.

5. Position this container to centre it so that the tower does not begin to lean to one side or the other. 6. Repeat the process, feeding each container onto the stake using their drainage holes, until all the containers are evenly filled and stacked. Leave 11⁄2 inches of open space at the top of the container. 7. Plant the garden containers with your favourite plants for the growing conditions; add organic fertilizer as you plant. Keep in mind the size the plants will be at full growth in order to prevent overplanting. 8. Water well. 101 Organic Gardening Hacks by Shawna Coronado. I

f you’re looking for a sunny hideaway to see you through the damp spring months, you’ll definitely want to read on. Brand new on the Cypriot property scene, Limassol Del Mar is a luxury development on Southern Cyprus’ south coast, with a choice of two, three, four and six-bedroom apartments on offer – all with incredible sea views and state-of-the-art amenities – making for quite the heavenly spot. Located in the south east corner of Limassol – an area currently undergoing substantial transformation and hurtling towards becoming the island’s most in-demand luxury destination – Limassol Del Mar is guaranteed to be a sound investment for those looking to buy overseas, not to mention a fabulous holiday bolthole. Stretching across 170 metres of sea frontage, the iconic building was designed by acclaimed architects Benoy, with the subtle wave forms from the sea inspiring the beautiful design of each living space, with apartments boasting full-height glazing which glide open seamlessly, linking the interior space to the exterior terraces, with glass balustrades ensuring continuous uninterrupted views of the sea and beyond. And what’s more, the development is soon to be complemented by a neighbouring luxury commercial complex, Le Plaza Del Mar, which will be home to a signature restaurant and cafeteria and an exclusive collection of high-end boutiques, and will also include a spa, gym, concierge services and club house, plus outdoor and indoor swimming pools. With Brexit on the horizon, Cyprus (and Limassol in particular) is becoming an evermore appealing option for property investment, with the island’s recently introduced scheme for the acquisition of Cypriot (EU) Passports (or Citizenship to non-EU citizens), through an investment of €2 million into residential property. This means the whole family can get citizenship (and visa-free travel to more than 157 countries), and benefit from Cyprus’ zero inheritance, wealth, gift and immovable property taxes. From €1,150,000 for a two-bedroom apartment For more information, contact +357 25 510 888 or info@limassoldelmar.com (limassoldelmar.com)
