don’t know about you, but right now I’m wishing I could dive head first into the pool on our inside front cover. Summer is almost here. With this in mind, you won’t want to miss our fashion spread, ‘Best Dressed’ (p.56), which sets statement dresses and fine tailoring against the backdrop of the country’s oldest racecourse. Our travel pages, meanwhile, are brimming with holiday suggestions – just in case you’ve not quite made up your mind – and our My Life in Cheshire star, Carina Martins, even tells us about swapping Brazil for Cheshire. If you’re out in the garden at the first hint of the sun, you’ll enjoy our gardening pages, overrun with ideas for using your outdoor space to suit your needs – whether that’s entertaining the kids or creating your own secret place of calm (p.140). And we still have holidays on the brain when we chat to Andrei Ostrikov, of Sale Sharks, about everything from playing in the World Cup to asking out his now wife, Julia (p.28). I’d also like to draw your attention to two articles we’re really quite proud of. One covers the amazing Simply Cheshire, taking place on 20-21 May (p.72). As writers of a luxury title, we’re not easily impressed – but wowed we were when we discovered all the fabulous products which will be on offer, from silk ties to sausages, each one made right here. We hope to see you there. In the other (p.110), we chat to the Manchester committee for Variety, the children’s charity – who raise vital funds for children with disabilities in the north west – and invite you to our first event with them on 4 May at 1539, Chester. “The world’s favourite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.”

My life in CHESHIRE CARINA MARTINS, GENERAL MANAGER, THE STANNEYLANDS

“W

e packed our bags and picked our spot on the map. It was an adventurous move. We knew it wasn’t going to be London and we’d learned a lot about the north west and the opportunities here; we also wanted a countryside lifestyle for the children.” Brazilian-born Carina Martins lives in Warrington with her husband, Ricardo, and two children Aimi, aged ten, and Jun, aged seven. “We’ve been here one year now and we’re involved in everything that goes on. It’s an amazing community. The kids have picked everything up really quickly and Jun is playing at the City Academy. We’re City fans now!” Carina is busy building a team for the new Stanneylands, part of The Mere Collection. “When I first met with Mr Boler, one of the owners, I completely saw the vision for The Stanneylands and I am so proud to be involved from the very beginning. We are a restaurant with rooms and we have so many stories to tell, from the history and community to the handpicked local suppliers. “So many people remember The Stanneylands with warmth which makes this project even more special to us all. This, coupled with a huge emphasis on the learning and development of our team, which I am totally passionate about, will create new moments to surprise and delight.” With an Italian heritage, Carina was born and lived in Sao Paolo, heading to university to study tourism and later an MBA in Business Management. As part of her study, she lived and worked Bristol for one year and it was then that she fell in love with England. “I always planned to come back, but then I met Ricardo and plans got delayed. I have always felt happy here, and the people and way of life are very easy and straight forward which suits who I am. I don’t even mind the weather; who wants to work in 40 degree heat every day anyway?” In between Carina has worked for some of the leading hoteliers in Brazil, and the launch of the first boutique hotel in Sao Paolo for Fasano Group really got her hooked. “Fasano was already the best place in town and I was so excited to be a part of the opening of such a new offering to the brand, a boutique hotel – and it was in 2003 before boutique hotels had really arrived.” This was followed by time at Accor Hotels on the corporate side, but Carina missed the buzz of smaller hotels returning to the boutique hotel industry working with a passionate French entrepreneur to develop authentic Brazilian retreats, before the owner of Fasano invited her back to lead their fourth luxury property, this time in the countryside. Four and a half years later she convinced her husband and family to make the move to England and Cheshire. “We are all together and we are loving our life here. We just need to get our pet whippet, Nico, over and we will be complete.” (stanneylands.co.uk) 19

2017 PURDEY AWARDS The annual Purdey Awards for Game and Conservation are open for entries. Held annually since 1999, the awards seek to promote a wider appreciation of the outstanding game and habitat conservation work carried out by shoots throughout the United Kingdom, and to give well deserved recognition to the best. Entries are invited from any type or size of shoot, actively involved in improving habitats for game birds, and able to demonstrate to the judges how their work has not only improved their shoot, but also widened its biodiversity to benefit other species of bird and wildlife. The prize fund is worth up to £15,000 and the sixteen strong judging panel, chaired by the Duke of Wellington, meets in June to shortlist the most promising entries, which will receive judging visits between July and September. It reconvenes in October to decide winners, who will be presented with their awards on 24th November at the annual ceremony held at Audley House in Mayfair. Entries by 22 May, 2017 (purdey.com/shooting-life/purdey-awards)

NOTEBOOK IN THE CLINK The Clink Charity has been presented with the Centre for Social Justice’s Social Enterprise Award. While we’re familiar with the work at HMP Styal, the charity was recognised for its ‘effective and innovative approach to reducing reoffending rates of ex-offenders, through accredited hospitality training and education’. Since launching in 2009, The Clink Charity has garnered unwavering recognition from the hospitality industry, philanthropic businesses and the world’s socially conscious diners, with the concept set to expand across Her Majesty’s Prison Estate as a result of this valuable support. With four restaurants currently in operation across the UK, at HMP High Down in Sutton, HMP Cardiff, HMP Brixton and HMP Styal in Wilmslow, prisoners working in the restaurants work a 40-hour week while training towards achieving City & Guilds NVQs in food preparation and food service to aid employment upon their release. HMP Styal has also been awarded the Sustainable Restaurant Association’s three-star award for using quality, fresh and locally sourced ingredients to create classic dishes with a modern twist. For those of you who haven’t visited, the duo of lamb is a must. (theclinkcharity.org) 20

LITERARY ITINERARY

“If you are a disciple of one of those calorie-counters who turn the joys of eating into a form of punishment, close this book at once; it is too lively, too aggressive, and far too impertinent for you.” Salvador Dalí’s words set the scene for a decadent affair of food and Surrealism in the tasteful reprint of Les Dîners de Gala. The Spanish artist was also renowned for hosting flamboyant dinner parties and here he reveals some of the sensual, imaginative and exotic elements that made up his notorious gatherings. Recipes are accompanied by illustrations as well as extravagant musings on subjects such as dinner conversation. A night in for dinner won’t ever be the same again. As Chatsworth House prepares to open House Style: Five Centuries of Fashion, Camilla Apcar speaks to Lady Laura Burlington about the exhibition’s cast of characters

f the walls of Chatsworth House could tell stories, then the clothes of those who have resided there for more than four centuries would certainly have some good tales. House Style: Five Centuries of Fashion at Chatsworth will be the largest exhibition ever held at the Peak District manor. Opening on 25 March, historical and contemporary clothes will go on show in a survey of the life and times of the aristocratic Devonshire family. It has taken just over six years to put together, curated by Vogue’s international editor-at-large, Hamish Bowles. One of the driving forces behind the project is Lady Laura Burlington, who is married to William Burlington, the son of the current Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. A former contributing editor for Harper’s Bazaar, fashion is in her veins. She also sits on the New Generation board of the British Fashion Council. “I had a very small seed of an idea to invite Hamish to come and look at the collection, quietly in the hope that he might feel there would be an exhibition there,” says Burlington. But she credits the final product to her parents-in-law, the Bowles and creative designer Patrick Kinmonth, who was responsible for Vogue 100: A Century of Style at the National Portrait Gallery last year. House Style is not about fashionable fads, but ‘a way of life’. “It was really difficult to come up with a name,” says Burlington. “For a long time it was Dressing the Devonshires – but then we thought maybe no one would know who the Devonshires were. House Style is more than just dresses. “Whenever Hamish finds a dress, he starts looking for a picture of the person who has worn it. That’s very important in this show: it’s a way of telling stories about the family and making people feel closer to the actual characters.” Indeed, some of its cast will be more familiar than others. The exhibition stretches back to the 16th century and the formidable Bess of Hardwick, who persuaded her husband Sir William Cavendish to sell his lands and move to her home county, where they built the first house at Chatsworth. The estate has been home to the Cavendish family and the hereditary

23

dukes ever since. Bess of Hardwick’s Elizabeth I badge – monogrammed ‘E S’ for Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury – will be on display, alongside an account book handwritten by her and her secretary. House Style will then wend its way through the ages – displayed in Chatsworth’s grandest rooms, such as the Painted Hall – right up until the present day. Items belonging to the current Duke and Duchess of Devonshire will include a Givenchy bolero worn by the Duchess on their wedding day. “When I first asked [my parents-in-law] to open their wardrobes, there was a sort of deep inhalation of breath,” Burlington explains. “They said ‘Oh, we don’t have anything you’d be interested in’… but then it all came out. I hope they’ll be happy with the final result.”

“There have been some really exciting discoveries – perhaps quite small to other people, but quite significant to us” Adele Astaire, Fred’s sister and dance partner, married Lord Charles Cavendish in 1932. As Duchess Mary recalled of the family’s first meeting with her son’s fiancé: “All gathered, like stone pillars, in the library… the heavy doors opened and there stood this tiny girl, beautifully dressed. We waited for her to approach us, but instead of walking, she suddenly began turning cartwheels. Everyone loved it.” “Their marriage represented a great merging of British aristocracy and Hollywood royalty,” says Pierre Lagrange, chairman of Huntsman. The Savile Row tailor has recreated a pair of riding breeches originally made for the inimitably fashionable Adele, especially for the exhibition. The order was found in the shop’s archives – the dukes were frequent customers – and refashioned using the original model. “Huntsman is known for its menswear, but a lot of elegant women have worn our pieces,” says Lagrange.

There will of course be ballgowns, including an example designed by the House of Worth, but House Style will also include a lot of men’s clothes: livery, uniforms, garter robes and boots. Some pieces have been borrowed from museums, but much will be from the Devonshire Collection (pieces belonging to the family, looked after by the House Trust). The Devonshires’ textile store was opened wide, as well as dressing-up cupboards and the family’s wardrobes. “There have been some really exciting discoveries – perhaps quite small to other people, but quite significant to us,” says Burlington. “Hamish found a 1953 Dior gown sort of hanging on the back of a door, with the label missing, which none of us had given a second thought.” Other finds have been more emotional. “Stella Tennant had lost her wedding dress, an incredible Helmut Lang, and I don’t think he made too many. It was extraordinary and very conceptual. We were borrowing her mother’s dress – the current Duke’s sister – and tried it on a mannequin. As we were packing it away, at the bottom of that box, we found Stella’s packed in tissue. So there it was, 18 years after she last saw it.”

Tennant, the fashion model who was once the face of Chanel with the shortest of black haircuts, is among the exhibition’s most contemporary stars. She is the granddaughter of the 11th Duke and Deborah Mitford – one of the notorious six sisters, who are honoured in their own right. “There’s definitely a humorous thread that runs throughout House Style,” explains Burlington, “with rubber chicken handbags and the 11th Duke’s slogan jumpers. He came up with in-joke designs like ‘Never Marry A Mitford’ or ‘Never Trust A Cadogan’.” Twentytwo will be on display. Burlington’s other favourites include the current Duke’s Mr Fish and Blades suits. “They’re really avant-garde. He must have been very brave and forward-thinking in those days, as he is now, to dress in those clothes.” As with any study of costume, much can be gleaned about life during different eras. “After the war, one of the Duke’s smoking jackets was repaired and repaired. There’s layer upon layer of tweed,” says Burlington. “It was a time when people were much more careful [with their clothes]. It was more ‘make do and mend’.” Surveys of aristocratic fashion, couture and noble living have been undertaken many times before, but this exhibition – set in one of England’s grandest and most treasured houses – will be styled with a thoroughly personal touch. £21.90, entry to exhibition included in Chatsworth House ticket, 25 March – 22 October (chatsworth.org)

The modern man Melissa Porter dispels some long-held man myths and offers a pinch of salt

O

ne of my most passionate projects is parenting my son, Pierce. As a busy single working mum, trained in behaviour, I’m hyper aware of the negative, potentially life-changing, impact that other people’s unsolicited, often well-intended, truths and stories can have on the emotional wellbeing of a human. What I know is that adults do not generally have relationship and work challenges. The real challenge? Unresolved childhood issues. At a point during your childhood, you’ll have listened to someone else’s unsolicited truth and story and, probably because they were in a position of authority – for example, parent, teacher, media – you decided to believe it as your truth. This acquired story and set of beliefs then acts as a filter, through which your thoughts and choices are processed and, unless challenged, they become our neurological rules right through into our adult lives. Boom. ‘Man up’, ‘boys don’t cry’, ‘real men’ are among a few of the most popular learned stories and ‘truths’ I’ve heard people verbally vomit over each other’s souls. None of us is perfect and I, too, slip into moments of unconscious learned limiting ways of being. But know, the emotional damage for a child to be branded with these words may affect their future relationships and self-esteem as an adult. I see it in my coaching practice daily. An increase in the number of powerfully vulnerable men who have had enough. Tired of playing a role, society has historically deemed as ‘normal’ that no longer fits with the flow and freedom of modern life. Being told that ‘real men’ open doors, pay for dinner and hold your skis. Truth alert. Ditch your expectations and mutually agree rules,

unless you’re being paid for by the hour. Another is being told that men are rubbish at communicating. Truth alert: all humans are unique and communicate differently. Accept and love each other’s differences. Use patience and compassion to resolve and appreciate differences, regardless of gender. And then there’s being told it’s not OK for a man to get angry or to cry. Truth alert: anger is merely an expression of unmet needs; a visceral reaction to a physical feeling in the body of being misunderstood or unclear about what to do or say next. I salute angry people who are taking responsibility for their feelings and seeking to understand themselves. To cry is to be emotionally connected and powerful. It’s a physical cleansing of our being. Bottled-up emotions may result in physical violence, self-loathing and ultimately low self-esteem and depression. If someone has an opinion about you, know that it’s based on their limited perspective and understanding of themselves. Most people don’t understand themselves. My general rule of thumb is to take other people’s opinions with a pinch of salt. Then proceed to chuck it over your shoulder far, far away. A SHARK TALE Russian born Sale Sharks player, Andrei Ostrikov, talks to Jan Clarke about rugby, romance and putting down roots here in Cheshire

T

here’s no mistaking Andrei Ostrikov as he arrives with his wife, Julia, for our meeting. The rugby player stands at an impressive six foot six inches and towers over everyone in the room – particularly me, at a vertically challenged five foot zero. His build and stature mean the Sale Sharks and Russian team member is ideally suited to his lock position, which requires both height and muscle. For those of you who don’t know your props from your wingers, as a lock, Andrei needs to be able to bring power to the scrum and yet be capable of soaring to great heights in the line-out, during a match. He has been a successful part of the Sale Sharks team since 2011, when he was signed by the Sale director of rugby, Steve Diamond. Andrei explains that he and Steve met when Diamond spent a year coaching the Russian National team, which Andrei also plays for. When Steve returned to the Sharks, he quickly signed the lock to be part

of his squad. “Steve is a great coach and a very good motivator. He has an old-school approach which helps to push you forward.” As a child, Andrei originally played volleyball. However, at the age of 16, rugby became more appealing to him, as this was something many of his friends had become involved with. “I am from a small part of Moscow where everyone loves rugby,” Andrei tells me, “and I was keen to take up this sport.”

29

Just two years later, at the age of 18, he was selected for the Under-19 National Team. It was while playing at the Junior World Cup in Dubai that he received an invitation to join a two-week training camp with French team SUA in Agen. By the end of the two weeks, Andrei was offered a three-year deal, and joined the French club in 2006.

“Just when I was losing hope, I decided to ask one more time and finally she agreed” He then played for French team SACA in Aurillac, before joining Sale. He’s now made over 100 appearances for the Sharks, in addition to 26 for his national team. He is proud to have been a member of the Russian squad when they qualified for the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand. Andrei tells me, “Russia qualifying for the World Cup was a very emotional moment, and travelling with the boys around New Zealand was a very special time.” Our drinks arrive and congratulations are the order of the day, as Andrei informs me that he and Julia are celebrating the fifth anniversary of their very first date – although their meeting

nearly didn’t take place at all. “I asked Julia out on a date several times but she always refused,” Andrei laughs. “Just when I was losing hope, I decided to ask one more time and finally she agreed.” The couple have now been married for nearly three years and, with Andrei just about to sign a new contract for Sale Sharks, they are house hunting in Cheshire. Like Andrei, Julia’s parents originate from Russia, although Julia was born in Latvia. They speak five languages between them and have family and friends spread across the globe. Despite this, they enjoy living in the north west and consider Cheshire to be their home. They talk with affection for the club Andrei has now spent six seasons with, and for the region. “We love everything this area has to offer,” Julia tells me, “from the beautiful countryside on our doorstep, to all the advantages of living close to Manchester city centre with its amenities and restaurants. Being raised in Moscow, Andrei is definitely a city boy at heart.” It’s clear from our conversation that family and friends are extremely important to the couple, and they take the opportunity to meet whenever they can, with Julia adding that they always “try to choose somewhere central which is convenient for everyone to travel to”. They have recently returned from Georgia, where

they spent time with family, and frequently travel to Spain to be with friends. They are already planning their next family trips, to coincide with Andrei’s 30th birthday and their impending third wedding anniversary. In addition to visiting family and friends, they’ve most definitely got the ‘travel bug’, and our interview passes all too quickly as we talk more of their holidays. Over the last few years they have spent time in Europe and fallen in love with many places, including Barcelona, Geneva and the Greek Islands. They transport me to Thailand with its magical sights, stunning beaches and incredible food as they describe a recent visit. However, it’s significant to remember that life is not all glamorous travels and holidays. As a professional, Andrei is fully committed to his sport and dedicated to his team. Training, weight sessions, video and post-match analysis, together with careful nutritional intake and the vital matches themselves, are all part of Andrei’s daily life. Being a successful part of the team is very important to him. “Sale is like my second home,” he says. “I really feel I am part of this club and I am looking forward to lots of new challenges here.” (salesharks.com) We interviewed Andrei and Julia at Mustard Diner and Bar in Sale, Cheshire (thisismustard.co.uk)

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes From gents who plan surprises to planning parties for the men in your life, Liz Taylor gives the low down

“W

hen you arrive, please look for your driver with a name board and I will meet you at the venue,” said one high-profile gentleman client, who wanted me to organise a surprise anniversary. I had to pack flip-flops! Of course, not all my clients adopt a 007 approach to organising their parties, but it isn’t uncommon in 2017 for the man in the family to look to plan special celebrations. Who said romance was dead? Some clients arrive at my office with a clear idea of what their wife or girlfriend would ‘like’ (we are in the realms of TV’s Don’t Tell the Bride, here) and, for others, they look to me for immediate inspiration. Quite the challenge! It is 2017, though, and there are many stylish men out there who have great taste (my inspiring friend Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, for one) and, while they have a good understanding of what their loved ones would like from a celebration, they need some help when it comes to the magic that is going to give them their gold star. Is it really so different to plan an event for a woman rather than a man? Not really, but it does need to be an event that uniquely reflects them: a football-inspired 50th for Eamonn Holmes – paying homage to his beloved Manchester United; a super-sexy 50 Shades of K party for a glamorous birthday at The Hurlingham Club; or a 60th birthday for a telecoms billionaire that took inspiration from the 1920s. Here are five ideas to inspire your next surprise: 32

1. Tasting the Experience An intimate private party in the distilleries of Scotland or small vineyards of France. Gourmet dinners, Michelin chefs. Fine-dining for fine tastes.

2. Sporting Chance

“Some clients arrive at my office with a clear idea of what their wives or girlfriends would ‘like’”

A private jet to take you and your friends to the sports match of your dreams. A World Cup. On the start line. Next to the Umpire’s Chair.

3. High Energy Power round the track at Silverstone. Striking red and black colours. Chequered flags. Everything setting the pace for a night to remember with top entertainment.

4. Fairground Fantasy Vintage set design, indoors or outdoors: a warehouse, garden, or historic venue. Dodgems, big wheel, hook-a-duck and hotdog vendors. Entertainers and montmartre artists mingling with the guests.

5. And finally... Be inspired by your ‘era’. 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and noughties – the music, fashion, colours, architecture. From Beatles tribute artists to Take That (my clients and my heroes!), and prawn cocktails to sushi, and lots of gin. Deliver your ideas with innovation and creativity, plus lots of ice and a long tall glass. Whatever you choose, put your stamp on it. The moment the invitation is received, the sense of anticipation sets in and the journey reflects your very own style. So get in the driving seat, get into gear, and sit back for the ride of a lifetime! (tlc-ltd.co.uk)

The Association of Animal Artists announces its annual exhibition at Castle Park Arts Centre in Frodsham. Animal Art is a genre that has risen in importance as a means to demonstrate our love of wildlife, and appreciation of all creatures, great and small. As our natural world endures the pressure of human activity, and wildlife dwindles, our means of documenting their value on our planet is crucial to raise awareness while conveying an appreciation of their beauty. The AAA comes together in this fantastic display of craftsmanship, to display their love of the animal kingdom. All artwork is for sale, with a proportion of the proceeds helping to support their charity partner, The Vincent Wildlife Trust. PRIZE LOTS Important ‘Cité’ armchair from Jean Prouvé’s private collection, Jean Prouvé ESTIMATE £180,000-£280,000

The Modern Masters sale returns to Phillips later this month, offering feats of design by names such as Armand Albert Rateau and Alberto Giacometti, the latter of which will be the subject of an exhibition at the Tate Modern in May. Also represented is Jean Prouvé: the French designer invented the ‘Cité’ armchair in 1930 towards the beginning of his career. It was initially designed for a competition for furnishing the halls of residence at Nancy’s Cité Universitaire, but the fluid, ergonomic shape proved so popular that it is still manufactured today. Prouvé also displayed and used the armchair in his own home, and this particular piece is from his private collection. Modern Masters, 26 April (phillips.com)

RABBIT HOLE As she takes up her latest role in Frank Wildhorn’s Wonderland, northwest native Wendi Peters sits down with Natalie Anglesey to talk proper tea, Coronation Street and jam tarts

“I

’m enjoying jam tarts less and less,” chuckles popular actress Wendi Peters. There’s a valid explanation why the Celebrity Masterchef finalist may be going off her tarts, as she laughingly explains. “I have to eat several jam tarts every night in my role as the Queen of Hearts in Frank Wildhorn’s musical Wonderland,” she explains. “Even if I only have a couple every night on this seven month tour, I may well have had my fill before the end of the run. So I’m trying not to have any sweet things during the day and then I’ll enjoy them even more during the show!”

38

This production of Wonderland, not to be confused with the National Theatre’s production with a similar name, is an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. With the author’s connection to Daresbury, where he was born Charles Dodgson on January 27th in 1832, local interest should be keen. “It’s been an absolute joy to work with the American composer,” Wendi enthuses. ”Frank Wildhorn is a legend in musical theatre but he’s better known in America, where most of his shows have been on Broadway. We performed a

concert with him last year at the Palace Theatre, when two of Broadway’s biggest stars flew over just for that night to perform with him – it was a truly magical evening. ” At the Manchester concert, composer Wildhorn – who wrote Whitney Houston’s Where Do Broken Hearts Go? – explained how, from an early age, he’s been enamoured with British culture. Indeed, many of his shows are based on our literature. In addition to Wonderland, there’s Jekyll and Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Dracula and Victor/Victoria, which starred Julie Andrews, who became a great friend of his. As a child Wendi, too, knew an actor’s life was her destiny. “I was only eight when I decided I wanted to

I now shudder at the thought of my daughter Gracie leaving home at that age, but there was no

stopping me. I stayed at the YWCA in London, which was a bit like a poor version of a girls’ boarding school, and had a job as an usherette to help pay my way.” Wendi was soon appearing in musicals like Guys and Dolls, Gypsy and Into the Woods. Stage roles in Murder on the Nile, Noises Off and particularly Teechers, written by John Godber, gave Wendi her first break. Theatre was followed

by television roles in Cardiac Arrest, Out of the Blue and Bad Girls. “I actually met my husband, Kenny Lindon, in a musical,” laughs Wendi. “In 1988 we were both in Hello Dolly in Manchester, and that’s where we fell in love. Our beautiful daughter is now 16 and it looks like she’ll be following in our footsteps. Thankfully, I don’t have to worry about her while I’m on tour because Kenny now works from home – after retraining as a sports physio.” Wendi endeared herself to television audiences as Cilla Battersby-Brown in Coronation Street – often described as a very different kind of tart! “Don’t get me wrong, I loved playing Cilla because she’s so unlike me,” Wendi says. “She was either outrageously funny and made the public laugh, or totally selfish and folk loathed her. But she was a survivor, whatever.” When Gracie was small, the family lived in Manchester while Wendi worked on The Street, but when Gracie reached school age, they had to decide where to make their permanent base. ”Although I was born and raised in the north, we also had a home in Hertfordshire, so I left The Street after four years to head south and spend more family time together. I’ve still kept in touch with friends like Jenny McAlpine, who plays Fiz, and I’m looking forward to catching up with her and baby Albert when Wonderland is in Manchester.” Wendi now particularly enjoys being able to pick and choose her roles. “I’ve done panto near London so I could go home every night, and followed that with Grumpy Old Women 2 with my old friends Jenny Éclair and Susie Blake. We laughed so much! I‘ve toured with Barrie Rutter’s terrific Northern Broadsides company, and appeared in another Godber play, April In Paris. I also enjoyed being in White Christmas as it’s such a lovely show.” Delighted at the prospect of returning to familiar territory, Wendi reflects about the choices she’s made. “An actor’s life is very strange, you know. from obviously missing family and friends, I really do miss a good cup of tea. The fresh taste of water up here is far better than down south.” There’s also a one-woman show to look forward to. “Recently I appeared in a show, about my career, which was quite an experience because, if you forget your lines, you’ve only got yourself to fall back on. It was quite emotional when my daughter came on stage to sing some of the songs which have a special meaning for me, and it’s been suggested we bring that to Manchester in the future. “In the meantime I’m concentrating on Wonderland, which is a great story with an interesting twist. There’s some terrific music performed by a fabulous cast, which includes Kerry Ellis and Dave Willetts. Returning home means I can see all my relatives and friends, and I hope everyone enjoys the show. Until then, I’m looking forward to a proper cup of tea with my parents and working off those jam tarts!” Wonderland, 24-29 April, Manchester Palace Theatre (0844 871 3019; wonderlandthemusical.com)

What is a “fair” settlement following divorce or separation

Liz Cowell, Principal Lawyer and Family Law Arbitrator, Slater and Gordon

No two divorces are the same. But there is one important factor in all divorces: the actions of each party can have a huge impact on how fair the final settlement is. From my experience as a Family lawyer and a deputy district judge I do believe it is possible to reach a settlement with your ex amicably without the need to go to court. However, I often see that fail, and when it does my advice is that you should put yourself in a position of knowing what a fair settlement looks like for you and, understand the process. To assist you with these thoughts, I have shared the most frequently asked questions from my clients who have faced this situation.

Q: Does the court use a formula to divide assets? The simple answer is yes. The court will start from the basis of a 50/50 division of assets between you and your ex-partner. However, our law is discretionary and the court looks to achieve fairness not equality.

Q: What does this mean? Equal division of assets is only deemed fair if both parties’ needs can be met.

Q: Can my ex get a share of the money I inherited from my parents? Yes, in some circumstances. First of all, any inheritance must be disclosed to the court. Your ex will have an interest in any inheritance if it has been

mingled with jointly owned assets, for example invested in the matrimonial home. If the inheritance has been kept in your sole name it will only be treated by the court as a resource to be used to meet needs if the division of the “matrimonial assets” does not do so.

at needs. If your ex is asset poor but income rich you will get maintenance instead.

Q: I do not know what assets my ex holds, how will I find out?

Courts can make orders for life or for a term of years. They can make a clean break order. Each case is decided on individual facts so it’s not advisable to compare your settlement with someone else’s.

Your ex will be under a duty to disclose all savings – including those off shore.

Q: What if my ex hides information from the court? The Supreme Court has made it clear: the omission of important disclosure could render any order void. Your ex will be warned that this is the case by his or her lawyers.

Q: I read in the papers that the courts have told people to go back to work and that they will not award maintenance. Is this true?

We believe it is important that you seek legal advice during this process. The award winning team I work with have years of experience dealing with financial settlements. The approach we would take and recommend, is to look at the offer with you in the context of what capital is available and what your needs are.

Q: I am not earning at the moment. Do I have to get a job or does my ex have to maintain me?

Call us on

If your ex entered into a contract of marriage or civil partnership with you he or she agreed to maintain you for the rest of your life. You owe your partner the same obligation. But courts have a duty to achieve a clean break between separating spouses or civil partners, where possible. This is done by looking

Return of the

MINUTE REPEATER As time has moved from our wrists to the smartphones in our pockets, mechanical watches have survived by appealing to our romantic side. So it’s fitting that one of the world’s most romantic watchmakers should revive the most romantic complication of them all, writes Richard Brown

W

atches are to timekeeping what floppy disks are to storing data. Like DVDs and Microsoft Internet Explorer, mechanical timepieces should be consigned to memory. Things made of cogs, gears and wheels belong in museums. Weird, then, that between 2000 and 2015, the mechanical component of Switzerland’s watch industry more than trebled in size. Despite two years of contraction, last year the country still exported £11.8 billion’s worth of wristwear powered by a spring. Devices, that is, that serve their primary purpose less ably than the digital clock on your microwave oven. One way of explaining the paradox is by considering the story of the minute repeater. As chiming watches were conceived in the 17th century as a way of telling the time in the dark, today repeaters serve the same function as the Corinthian columns on the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica; just as those decorative pillars serve to represent the ideals of one type of art form, minute repeaters embody the zenith of another.

What is a minute repeater? A repeating watch is one that chimes the time on demand, rather than a sonnerie, which chimes the time in passing, much like a mantel clock. Typically, minute repeaters are activated by pushing a sliding lever, usually located at ten o’clock. Repeater watches sound the time to varying degrees of precision: a quarterrepeater will strike the number of hours followed by the number of quarter-hours; a minute-repeater will chime hours followed by quarter-hours followed by minutes.

48

How does a minute repeater work? Once the slide lever is pushed, mechanical ‘feelers’ read the time from the position of gears. Two hardened-steel hammers then strike the time on two differently-tuned gongs. Minute repeaters chime three different sounds – the hours are typically signalled by a low tone, the quarter-hours by a sequence of two tones and the minutes by a high tone. If the time is 02:49, for example, the minute repeater will sound two low tones, representing two hours, three sequence tones, representing 45 minutes, and four high tones, representing four minutes.

A dying art form The first patent filed for an on-demand striker, or ‘repeater’, was granted to Englishman Daniel Quare in 1687. The first minute repeater – Quare’s sounded only hours and quarter-hours – is credited to Thomas Mudge, around 1720. The complication evolved under AbrahamLouis Breguet, who, in 1783, created the first striking repeater to be operated by a gongspring rather than a bell. In 1899, Audemars Piguet became the first to make a minute repeater small enough to be worn on the wrist. In the next century, the minute repeater became the magnum opus in every watchmaker’s arsenal. But two world wars and the quartz crisis of the 1970s hardly created the perfect market conditions for the most expensive and time-consuming watch in which to thrive. By the 1980s, the minute repeater was all but horological history. Enter Patek Philippe. Determined to bring the art of the repeater back to life, the watchmaker spent the best part

of a decade dismantling antiques for clues as to how to achieve the perfect chime. Patek Philippe’s first modern repeater was revealed in 1989. Issued to celebrate the brand’s 150th anniversary, the Calibre 89 incorporated 33 complications, making it the most complicated watch ever made. It was bested by Vacheron Constantin’s Reference 57260 only in 2015, which has 57 complications.

Grandmaster Chime

Patek currently offers a dozen non–limited minute repeaters. Manufacturing more than any other company, the brand has assumed leadership of the most exclusive club in watchmaking. Patek Philippe minute repeaters, says the brand, have to be audibly distinguishable as Patek Philippe minute repeaters. That comes from the top down. Every single piece goes to company president, Thierry Stern, for approval. Whereas a tourbillon might consist of between 60 and 70 components, a minute repeater movement will comprise more like 100. Each one takes between two and three years to make, with one watchmaker working on a timepiece from beginning to end. A good number will be rejected by Stern. These will then have to be taken apart, fine tuned and reassembled by hand.

In the flesh Calibre 89

5208P–001

5216P–001

It’s rare to hear a minute repeater in action. Only around three examples pass through Patek Philippe’s Bond Street boutique each year, during which time the brand might make 20 pieces in total. Once the gongs are set, a watch is sent to a vacuum chamber where microphones analyse chimes. A computer will know which parameters the tone of certain calibres and case materials should fall within. If a watch isn’t perfect, a watchmaker must take it apart, file down the gongs, reassemble and retest the piece until it is. On accepting responsibility for the completion of St. Peter’s Basilica, Michelangelo wrote: “I undertake this only for the love of God”. Listening to the enchanting tones of a minute repeater in the flesh, you can see how a watchmaker might approach the manufacturing of one with similar trepidation. (patek.com)

Diamonds in the Ruff As part of William & Son’s patronage of the National Portrait Gallery and lead sponsorship of the Portrait Gala (a special annual event that sees funds raised to support the gallery’s work and research, which is taking place on 28 March), the gold and silversmith has designed a jewellery collection to mark the occasion. Drawing on one of the gallery’s most famous paintings, the instantly recognisable Ditchley portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, the necklace and earring set features ethically-sourced aquamarine stones surrounded by 11.83-carats of baguette-cut diamonds – inspired by the traditional Elizabethan ruff that the monarch wears in the painting. In one of her last projects before her death, architect Zaha Hadid reinterpreted Bulgari’s most iconic ring: the B.zero1. The piece, which was originally inspired by the Roman Colosseum, has been through countless redesigns since its creation in 1999, yet this is perhaps the most dramatic to date. Its trademark motifs – the tubogas, a flexible band of sleek contours produced without soldering, and the Bulgari double logo – still feature, but Hadid daringly deconstructed the central looping band to incorporate her freeflowing, dynamic aesthetic. The ring is available in four versions: a four-band in pink gold, a three-band in white or pink gold and a pendant in pink gold. From £1,580 (bulgari.com)

Still waters In these politically turbulent times, at the AW17 New York Fashion Week shows, the industry drew comment. Political statements shouted out from T-shirts bearing slogans such as ‘I am an Immigrant’ and ‘We are all Human Beings’ (Prabal Gurung and Creatures of Comfort, respectively). Elsewhere, however, some brands have chosen to inject a note of calm in such chaos – cue De Beers. The brand has added three new pendants to its Enchanted Lotus collection, capturing the serenity and beauty of this ancient flower. Carnelian, lapis lazuli and jade have been embedded within micro-pavé lotus motifs. The chains can also be worn in reverse, revealing a delicate single round brilliant diamond. Carnelian and lapiz lazuli pendants, £2,425 each; Jade pendant, £3,250 (debeers.co.uk) 50

Drama Queen Many jewels shone at Paris Couture Week in March, but those that arguably sparkled brightest were those in Chopard’s Garden of Kalahari collection. The jewellery has been created from the exceptional 342-carat rough diamond of flawless colour sourced in Botswana’s Karowe mine a year ago. Craftsmen were given the arduous task of cutting the stone into 23 diamonds: five weigh more than five carats and are all D-colour and flawless. These were then set into six pieces – two rings, a necklace, bracelet, pair of earrings and a secret watch – each representing a different flower. POA, Chopard (chopard.com)

The Bigger Picture The rise of throwaway fashion has not only had a devastating effect on our planet, but also increasingly relies on cheap labour and poor working conditions to bring cheap clothing to the masses. Luckily, however, there are such brands as Orwell + Austen, who have adopted an eco-friendly philosophy, working closely with a carefully selected family-run manufacturer in Nepal, using ethically sourced yarns to produce high-quality pieces from natural materials including cashmere, wool and silk. In turn, the brand hopes to make consumers get into the habit of questioning the ethics and origins of their purchases, leading to a more sustainable industry for all – so check them out, and do your bit. Girl Power Having officially launched last September, we’re not in the least bit surprised to see that Victoria Beckham’s eagerly anticipated partnership with Estée Lauder has already taken the cosmetic industry by storm. The limited-edition make-up collection, Victoria Beckham Estée Lauder, was designed to reflect the style icon’s sense of entrepreneurship, with Mrs Beckham herself commenting: “The whole process has been both inspiring and eye opening – from going back and revisiting the Estée Lauder archives, through to working on the product with the Estée team, this feels like the perfect make-up partnership for me and my brand. I had long admired Estée Lauder the woman, and the powerful brand that she created, so I am excited to play a small part in her vision for women.” (esteelauder.co.uk; victoriabeckham.com)

Spring Scents Die-hard Jo Malone London fans will be thrilled to hear that the brand’s five most popular scented soaps – lime basil and mandarin, English pear and freesia, blackberry and bay, red roses and pomegranate noir – are celebrating the new season with some pretty new packaging, each one designed by renowned British artist and designer Michael Angove (£14 each). We, however, are currently distracted by the brand’s exciting, new literary launch, The Bloomsbury Set: a collection of five gorgeous 30ml colognes (£46 each) inspired by the Bloomsbury Group and Vanessa Bell’s Charleston House in Sussex. Each one is as unconventional and dreamy as the last (leather and Artemisia, anyone?), so we recommend you investigate. (jomalone.co.uk) 68

TREATMENT OF THE MONTH THE BUTTERFLY TRANSFORMATION RITUAL WORDS: MATTHEW BRINDLEY

It’s not often you come across an Urban Oasis, either in name or in nature – but, at the Hilton Deansgate’s hidden sanctuary, I was lucky enough to find both: vibrant and distinctively different, with each treatment room having its own spiritual identity. I am not unaccustomed to spa days, but nevertheless was unsure what to expect form one of Urban Oasis’ signature treatments, the Butterfly Transformation Ritual. It sounded a bit fluffy, but as my therapist and spa director, Martha, took me through what to expect, I was soon rather looking forward to it.

The Fitness Playbook Renowned personal trainer JC has just launched a total gamechanger – a set of downloadable 10-week fitness programmes to get you feeling fit and fabulous for the summer months. Aimed at those of moderate to above-level fitness, each set is priced at £14.99 and comes complete with a short, easy-to-follow video, plus training and nutritional guides that combine aesthetics, performance and health goals. Getting fit has never been easier. (trainwithjc.com)

Ultimately, it is about transforming the way you feel physically, mentally and emotionally, acheived through 70 minutes of combined acupressure, aromatherapy massage, Indian head massage, Reiki and reflexology. Using natural healing energies and enhancing them, there wasn’t an area of my body that wasn’t indulged, including my back, neck and shoulders, head, hands, legs and feet. I felt that not only had I had a treatment, but a unique experience that had left me revived and recharged. That, I am told, was my own healing energies being stimulated.

Toil and Trouble This spring, Bobbi Brown has produced a collection of six remedies, designed to target troublesome areas and improve your skin’s overall health. Ranging from soothing redness and irritation to revitalising dry and tired skin, the treatments are filled with natural extracts and oils from around the world. It is recommended that you apply just two or three drops at a time, twice a day, then sit back and let the vitamin-packed remedy perform its magic. £29.50 each (bobbibrown.co.uk)

Urban Oasis has a saying: ‘UO It 2 Yourself’ – and, post-treatment, I have to agree. I felt free of stress and tension – the ideal antidote to the strains of my new job and first print week!

Flasks is a brand that was born out of a dilemma we’ve all faced – what on earth to buy for a meaningful, useful, suitably upmarket wedding gift. When Markus Ganterer was faced with this problem, he decided to have a beautiful bespoke hipflask crafted for his newlywed friends, engraved with a personal message and made from the finest materials. The gift was a roaring success and, hey presto, XFlasks was born. Now available in a range of metals and finishes – including gold, silver and rose gold – each of the brand’s stainless steel 170ml flasks is seamless, comes with a lifetime guarantee and can be engraved with your choice of message. They also sell a whole range of fun accessories (including a Union Jack leather pouch, which we rather like), making for a gift that’s as pretty as it is practical. (xflasks.com)

Seven-Star

LUXURY

Taking on the chauffeur car market – and winning – the BMW 7 Series 740Ld with xDrive is way too good to let someone else have all the driving fun, reports Jennifer Mason

T

aking the BMW 7 Series 740Ld with xDrive for a spin was always going to be an interesting proposition. For starters, this limousine version of the popular 7 Series is directed at high-flying CEOs looking for extra legroom and all mod cons in the rear seats. Put it this way: owners of this version of the popular 7 Series are rarely going to be driving it themselves. So, in this road test, I’ll be looking at both sides of the equation.

78

Speaking of algebra, this BMW comes with a lot of numbers and letters in its name, but, basically, you’re looking at a three-litre, six-cylinder turbo diesel engine producing 255bhp and 413lb-ft of torque perched atop a long wheelbase. Records suggest the extra power boost will propel the 740Ld 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds – not too shabby for a vehicle that weighs 4,715lb. First things first: what does it look like? I’ve found BMW styling a bit hit and miss in the past,

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Motoring

the car can be controlled from the driver’s seat (a necessary function for a vehicle most commonly used to chauffeur busy executives from place to place), from ambient temperature and massage functions to the sliding sunscreens on the back windows and rear windscreen. Despite this, the control systems are functional and easy to use. The sat nav is pleasantly painless, and fiddling with the myriad seat and steering wheel adjusters leaves me with one of the most comfortable driving positions I’ve ever experienced (and that’s before I engage the massage function).

“While it may be marketed as the perfect chauffeur vehicle, the 740Ld could easily work just as well as a family car”

but I have to say, I really like the look of the new 7 Series. Despite its limousine status, the lines move away from your average boxy chauffeur car, offering something that's altogether sleeker. At the front, the slanting headlights and double grille give the car a leonine aspect, suggesting smooth grace and power in a nod to the 740Ld’s turbo-charged engine. In the driver’s seat, it’s like stepping into the cockpit of a futuristic spaceship. Everything in

The 740Ld is a beast; but even winding through London’s busy streets the car is far from unwieldy. On the contrary; it’s well adapted to life on the capital’s congested roads. I wouldn’t exactly call it ‘nippy’, but that’s to be expected in a car designed to offer the smoothest of rides. This is where the xDrive (BMW’s four-wheel drive system) comes into play. The extra grip means the car hugs the road steadily, whatever the weather conditions; but it’s also the reason the 740Ld handles like a car half its size, despite its more lengthy dimensions. Driving this BMW is just plain fun, and has me seriously considering a new career as a chauffeur. Out on the motorway, this car is in its element. “More recently, my interests have moved towards residential property transactions with particular emphasis on the sale and purchase of new-build residential accommodation and purpose-built buy-to-let investment properties. “While not at work, I do have my own buy-to-let properties to manage – fortunately I am practical and can undertake most work myself – or I can be found in the garage getting my hands dirty!”

GOING FORWARDS

Short haul vs long haul

Short haul Nobody Does It Better The George Vigouroux company has been renowned for its pioneering wines and wine tourism for many years (in particular, its 40-year production of the award-winning ‘Black Wine’ Malbec) – and can now add a nod for its culinary offerings from the revered Michelin Guide to its many accolades. The company now boasts a Michelin star for Le Dueze restaurant at Chateau de Mercues and a Bib Gourmand for La Table de Haute Serre, the original family owned winery, at Chateau de Haute Serre (both in Cahors, South West France) – and we’re not a bit surprised. (g-vigouroux.fr; chateaudemercues.com; hauteserre.fr)

The Real Madrid

Barceló’s new designer hotel is perfectly placed for those wanting to discover the bustling city of Madrid. Just a short walk from famous sites such as the Gran Via and Royal Palace of Madrid, the hotel has 258 rooms, designed by Jaime Hayón to reflect the local culture, art and fashion. With first-class facilities including a stylish bar, wellness zone and a pool-spa area with large windows overlooking the city, you’ll truly be on cloud nine. From €360 per night (barcelo.com)

They Love You, Yeah Yeah Yeah After wowing tourists and guests from across the globe, the Hard Days Night Hotel in Liverpool has been named ‘Best Hotel in the UK’ in the Travel Republic Hotel Awards 2017. Located in the heart of the Beatles’ quarter and the commercial district of the city, the (surprise, surprise) Beatles-inspired luxury lodging is among only 20 hotels to be awarded the prestigious prize, thanks to countless travellers’ reviews praising the hotel’s amenities and first-class service. We suspect there’ll be a whole lot of celebratory twisting and shouting going on. (harddaysnighthotel.com)

Long haul Slice of Paradise

Situated in the heart of the Bahamas, Harbour Island is renowned for its pink beaches, crystal waters and laid-back vibe. Adding an extra dose of luxury is Eleven Experience, which has just revealed its latest property, Bahama House. Dating back to the 1800s, the house has become a visual icon of the island, with beautiful outdoor spaces, an in-house chef and expert guides offering incredible activities (and, of course, beach days). A Very British

Safari

Kent might not seem like an obvious spot for spying big cats or roaming Serengeti-esque plains – but, as Kate Harrison discovers, there’s more than meets the eye to this sleepy county’s Port Lympne Reserve

S

naking along the southern Kent coast – close to the Ashford International Eurostar terminal – are 600 beautiful acres of stunning wild countryside, peppered with long grass, dusty tracks, watering holes and…giraffe? Not a common sight in rural England, to be sure, but once you set foot within the boundaries of the Port Lympne Reserve – home to the UK’s largest collections of black rhino, big cats, small cats, primates and western lowland gorillas, to name a few – it’s easier than you might think to imagine yourself transported to the African plains. Part of the Aspinal Foundation, a world leading conservation organisation dedicated to the responsible management of endangered species, and responsible for various breeding programmes which introduce animals back into their natural habitat, Port Lympne is a wildlife park with a difference. At basecamp, guests board open-air jeeps to drive around the park, hopping on and off at various locations as they go. First stop is the Primate Trail, where you can spot an array of funny-looking monkeys before catching the gorillas at feeding time, where a ranger will talk you through the many successful projects which release gorillas back into their natural habitat in the Congo. You’ll also get up close and personal with a walk through the lemur enclosure, before heading down to Carnivore Territory to visit the Barbary lions, tigers and cheetahs. Next is the Dinosaur Forest – a slight detour from the traditional safari route, though one that’s likely to be a hit with any little (and big) kids in the group. Here, more than 40 species of life-size dinosaur models (including T-Rex, Diplodocus and Pterodactyl) are hiding among

84

the trees, each one anatomically correct, while dinosaur rangers are on hand to give further insight to each creature. But the real safari experience is yet to come. Head back to basecamp and board another truck, then sit back and enjoy the sights and smells as the African Experience takes you through 100 acres of the Kent plains, spotting wildlife in their natural environment as you go. You’re accompanied by a ranger, each of whom is incredibly knowledgeable about each species and happy to answer questions or talk through the Foundation’s various projects, as you drive. On our first drive we were lucky enough to have a pregnant giraffe come to investigate our jeep and we could clearly see the unborn baby kick its mother’s belly. On another drive we saw an antelope give birth and a moody rhino playing havoc with some ostrich. Each drive is different and completely magical, just like a real safari. When you’ve worked up an appetite, there’s a range of cafés dotted around the park for lunch and snacks but, if you’re looking for something a little more refined, Port Lympne Restaurant offers the most wonderful afternoon tea – the perfect way to relax after a day of exploring. After you’ve taken in every inch of Port Lympne, it’s time to decamp to its sister park,

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Travel

“No drive is the same and each offers a magical experience, just like an authentic safari” Howletts, less than half an hour away by car and a breeding sanctuary for some of the most rare and endangered species in the world, including the largest herd of African elephant in the UK. Of course, with two parks to explore and so much to see, it makes sense to stay for a few days – and, luckily, Port Lympne has you well and truly covered. In true safari style, the reserve offers a range of accommodation, from luxury glamping sites, right through to the height of extravagance at the Treehouse Hotel. We stayed at Bear Lodge, which is perfect for families. The luxury tented accommodation sleeps up to six people and offers comforts such as a log burner and a private en-suite shower. The site offers stunning views overlooking the Kent coast and beyond and a range of dining options, including the Boma (pizza takeaway) and Clubhouse restaurant. The focal point is the Mongolian grill, where guests can choose and grill their own food with the help of the resident chef, while children can enjoy a play area in the centre of the camp and a view over the bear and cheetah enclosures. Best of all is the family of meerkats, which live on site and need to be fed maggots each morning. A reserve with conservation at its heart, all money raised goes to help fund the park’s vital work with endangered species and help enable the park to return animals back to protected areas of the wild. With this in mind, there are plenty of other activities that can be booked at an additional cost, including talks by expert animal teams, keeper experiences, animal encounters and photography days. We went along to watch the tigers feed and the rangers had set up the most realistic feeding scenario possible, with raw meat placed on ziplines to replicate the catching of prey in the wild. This is all with ultimate release in mind, and is fantastic to watch while listening to the rangers talk about traits specific to that particular species. A real family adventure, Port Lympne and Howletts offer a true safari experience – without airports or mosquitos. What’s not to love? (aspinallfoundation.org)

Melissa Porter escapes to her very own island paradise

Loving Feeling

86

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Travel

A

s an introverted being, I find social events and noisy crowded places among some of my least favourite experiences. Coupled with my values of privacy, luxury and a preference for peace and tranquility to recharge, when an opportunity to travel to the Maldives (purveyor of said riches) was offered to me, I had mentally manifested myself out there already. The Maldives was created by the universe for antisocial, nature-loving beings who appreciate the concept of intelligent luxury. Travelling to this paradise island in the Indian Ocean is simple enough. For most. From Manchester via London the journey time to Male, the capital, is around 11 hours and an alternative is to travel via Dubai, taking approximately the same time. For some reason, I chose to travel via Hong Kong. I don’t recommend this option unless you dislike whomever you’re booking the trip for. Over a day later than everyone else who travelled from Manchester, I arrived into Male. From Male, a relatively short transfer trip to your island is organised, which for most, involves either boarding a sea plane or a speed boat. Of course, for me, it involved both modes of transport and it was very, very dark when I arrived. Intelligence: fail. Luxury: tick. I was keen to be inspired by their integration.

87

On arrival into Soneva Jani, something mystical envelopes your entire being. I liken it to when I meditate and feel energised. As if Barry White is internally serenading me with his loving feeling. The island’s ethos is embodied by a philosophy of no news and no shoes, which seems remarkably smart. How so? Consider what the news is reporting, and the direct effect on your well-being: I’ve never seen a person be euphoric after a viewing of the News at Ten. The Soneva brand is all about embodying the simplicity of stillness through the slowness of being and the absolute elimination of unconscious doing. I’m in.

“On arrival into Soneva Jani, something mystical envelopes your entire being” It was created in 1995 by Sonu and Eva to project their vision of intelligent luxury to the more discerning of travellers. It’s built around a philosophy of sustainability and, as I toured both their islands of Soneva Fushi (land villas) and Soneva Jani (water villas), I observed their ethos is well established and very much alive. In constructing their newest Soneva Jani resort, Soneva kept its environmental impact as low as possible. The pools use seawater with UV filtration and the villas have been built over the sandy floors of the lagoon, with no damage to any part of the reef. Soneva’s Eco Centro Waste-to-Wealth centre ensures that waste is recycled, while the extensive vegetable garden provides local produce for the restaurants, based on organic principles.

88

Soneva Jani is 5.6 km of lagoon-inspired paradise. The resort is situated on the island of Medhufaru, which is part of an unhabituated five-island cluster. There will be 24 water villas and one island villa, with additional island villas planned for a later stage. Interestingly this is one of the lowest density resorts in the world, so privacy is virtually guaranteed. My spacious villa was one of the most brilliantly designed buildings I had ever seen created from the highest quality sustainable materials. With a sunken internal dining area, a study, superbly appointed kitchen and a gigantic roof deck with unparalleled views across the lagoon (featuring shades of blue I’ve never witnessed before), private pool with slide and then the pièce de résistance, the bedroom, featuring a retractable roof over the bed so that I could push a button and star-gaze to my heart’s content. Did I mention the bathroom with outdoor shower and steps directly into the sea? Heaven.

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Travel

With average temperatures of around 28 degrees, the island is incredibly pleasant to tour both at night and during the day, and I highly recommend the use of one of their electric golf buggies as you explore seemingly endless stretches of white secluded sandy beaches and lush vegetation featuring banana and coconut trees. We randomly spotted a school of sting ray and a pod of dolphins merrily bobbing just mere metres away from us. Other ways to feel relaxed and peaceful are to experience their world class spa or to kick back at their Cinema Paradiso outdoor venue: a fun concept featuring the first silent cinema in the Maldives. We were all given Bluetooth earphones to watch the movie, so as not to disturb the local wildlife. The resort serves cuisine from around the world and while I was visiting, Chinese New Year was being celebrated. One of my favourite offerings are the freshly squeezed juices featuring mouthwatering fruits and vegetables grown locally in their organic gardens. Soneva is famous for charcuterie, chocolate, cheese and ice-cream, complimentary to all guests. I suggest their creamy coconut ice-cream. Ice-cream always seems like a smart choice to me. One-bedroom water retreat, from $3,832 per night (soneva.com)

NEED TO KNOW Soneva made history five years ago by being the first developer to offer foreigners the opportunity to purchase resort real estate at their highly acclaimed Soneva Fushi resort. Due to its success and the enthusiastic demand from repeat guests, Soneva Jani was launched for would-be owners looking to purchase their own piece of paradise. Prices start at $3 million. The villas are sold on a renewable leasehold basis. Owners can opt to put their property in a managed rental programme.

Head for the Suburbs Following fabulous makeovers, two of Hoole’s best venues – The Hollows and The Suburbs – have recently reopened for spring with an even more spectacular offering than before

B

igger and better than ever before, two of Hoole’s most popular venues – The Hollows and The Suburbs, which sit next door to each other on Charles Street – have recently reopened following a glorious refurbishment. The opulent interiors remain, but both venues now boast even more space, making them ideal for those accustomed to their high-quality food and drinks, but in search of a change of scenery for refined client lunches or casual team-building events. The extra square footage also makes both locations excellent for Friday night post-work drinks with the whole team, and great meeting spots for yummy mummies needing space for prams and buggies. “We’ve listened to our customers and the one thing they wanted was more space, so that is what we’ve given them,” explains owner Kingdom Thenga. “Our new look will create a much more comfortable and spacious place for people to relax and enjoy The Suburbs’ experience.” The menu, which is now the same in both venues, takes the best from both The Hollows and The Suburbs, including the legendary Charles Street burger, delectable suburban beef dog, tender pork belly skewers and teriyaki chicken, while Sundays at The Hollows are all

about big group brunches, Bloody Mary’s and classic roast dinners with the family. There are also 40 colourful cocktails on the menu – from the apricot infused Cheeky Tiki and maple syrup saturated Cognac Kickback, to the dazzling Monkey on Fire, with its hints of chilli and chocolate. If none of these take your fancy, never fear: the cocktail team will gladly create bespoke tipples, too, and there’s even a cocktail trolley for drinks made at your table. But it’s without doubt Kingdom and his team’s passion which makes these venues so popular, with many of the staff having been there from the start, ever devoted to offering the best possible service. "We hope people will step out of the city and into the suburbs,” Kingdom says. “Let us look after you: we'll give you an experience of great drinks, great food, great atmosphere and great service that we hope you will fall in love with." This year The Suburbs has once again been shortlisted in the ‘Best Bar’ category of the Taste Cheshire Awards which, if it wins, will be its third victory in as many years. We have a feeling that, with its great reputation, warm atmosphere and sumptuous new look, The Suburbs might just be looking at a hat trick. (01244 344325; atthehollows.co.uk; the-suburbs.co.uk)

...with MATTHIEU NICHOLLA, executive chef for Eclectic Hotels WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE INGREDIENT? If there is an ingredient that I like to use really often it is the Jerusalem Artichoke, called Topinambour in France. It is a vegetable that has been a bit forgotten for years. I like the flavour of it, it goes really well as a purée for meat or fish dishes as well as a soup. It’s excellent with truffle oil! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD? I love slow cooked food. Simple to make, the result is always great. I like the texture of the meat once it has been cooked for hours in a nice stock . We always have a slow cooked recipe in our menus. Recently in our King Street Townhouse Tavern we had braised ox cheek in red wine which always gets good comments. We have launched a Sunday roast, too, with a slow cooked piece of rib eye beefn and the result is just amazing. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF EQUIPMENT? Definitely the Alto-Shaam! As we are doing a lot of large-scale events and dining during the year, especially in December, it really helps us to cook for 200 covers a day in a small kitchen, while keeping the same standard for all the plates. Since we invested in it a few years ago, it has really helped us with the demands of a big service.

WHAT IS YOUR DESERT ISLAND RECIPE? If it is only one ingredient, obviously it would be bread. For a full recipe I will say a dish called “tartiflette” – a French mountain dish made from sliced potatoes, sliced onion, diced pancetta, thyme, white wine and reblochon cheese. It is all cooked together in the oven, a really warming, satisfying winter dish. (eclectichotels.co.uk)

With the approval of the Governor of Svalbard, today, Mr Qureshi goes on two expeditions a year, seeking out the purest of icebergs in Kongsfjorden, gathers 15 tonnes of snow and bottles it by hand. SPOTLIGHT ON... PISTE, SANDBACH WORDS: LOUISA CASTLE

H

aving attended the launch party for Piste’s second site in Sandbach, we were happy to head back to sample its full offering (and all with the ease of the newly-opened A556!). Warmly welcomed by owner James and manager Chris, there was time for a drink by the bar before we sat down to dine. The interiors are reflective of the Tarporley restaurant, with Lucie’s identifiable piste-chic. Old fashioned wooden skis serve as non-invasive room divides and wooden sledges as chandeliers. It’s all about rustic, casual dining. It was a Friday night and the restaurant was full, a mix of guests from couples to parties to families and friends. There was a happy buzz as we settled down at our table to digest the menu. To begin we had the scallops and crab roll. The king scallops were presented with aubergine caviar and roasted chorizo and were carefully dressed in rocket oil. The crab rolls came with a bean-sprout salad and a delicious satay dipping sauce, the latter with that slightly sticky peanut butter feeling but also with a lightness. It was delectable. As we chatted to the young staff in between courses, we eyed up other guests’ dishes and noted a lot of chocolate fondues being followed by lots of satisfying noises. Noted for later. For main, we had duck and sausages. A very nice, tasty bangers and mash was presented to my husband, featuring a trio of local sausages: pork and leek; venison; and goat, with celeriac mash and red onion marmalade. Hearty fare for a cool spring evening.

96

The roasted duck breast was served perfectly pink, with a crisp skin. It was accompanied by charred gem lettuce, which was noted for barbecue season, and dauphinoise potatoes – a lovely thinly sliced stack with just enough naughtiness in between. It also came with a ginger and orange marmalade which satisfyingly cut through the richness of the dish. While we had visions of fondue for dessert, which came with fruit and honeycomb, we went for individual dishes. I chose the salted caramel chocolate tart with vanilla bean ice-cream – a lovely slice of decadence to round off the evening. And my husband, the Cheshire cheese board, complete with celery, chutney and Yorkshire fruit cake. Our bellies pleasantly satisfied, we headed home. We were impressed with the food, that cross of rustic Frenchness and local goodies, and the relaxed atmosphere, with live acoustic music. We wish you well and will see you for brunch very soon. NEW LOOK

Following the opening of sister restaurant Opera Grill, Chester’s original Italian eatery, Piccolino, has unveiled a fresh new look to complement its longstanding reputation for acclaimed continental classics

A

fter ten years at the forefront of the Italian restaurant scene in Chester, Piccolino is set to open its doors again after an extensive makeover. Little sister of the elegant Opera Grill facing it, Individual Restaurants, the company behind some of Cheshire’s most popular dining venues, unveiled the restaurant’s chic new look on March 25, just in time for Mother’s Day. Situated on Pepper Street, the restaurant will open every day from lunch until late and will be headed up by general manager Mario Dagostino, who treats his customers like relatives, saying “We are just like a huge Italian family that loves our guests”. Piccolino, Chester will also host the brand’s first ever Prosecco bar, with guests trying one of the range of ten Proseccos, and invited to enjoy a selection of tempting cicchetti for free every afternoon during ‘Aperitivo Time’, from 4pm until 6.30pm. Aperitivo is an Italian tradition for a pre-dinner drink when friends meet to drink, relax and enjoy a selection of elegant nibbles. Each glass of Prosecco from the swish bar will be served perfectly chilled, thanks to the restaurant’s in-house glass froster, and guests will be able to choose from the ‘frizzante’ (semi sparkling), or the full-on fizz of the ‘spumante’. The new drinks offering will also include an impressive selection of craft beers. Piccolino’s principles have remained the same since it opened its doors: to deliver classic Italian dishes using the best ingredients they can find. Passion for provenance is at the heart of the

menu and the company has close links to artisan suppliers all over Italy, bringing some of the best cheeses, salamis and grocery items to the UK. In addition to the very best meat and poultry direct from farms, the menu has an extensive collection of shellfish which will include fresh hand-picked crab from the Isle of Man, native lobster, wild Scottish langoustines, rope-grown Scottish mussels and Mersea Island rock oysters. Artisan filled pastas will all be made in house by Marcello Ghiretti, the pasta specialist, while seasonal fruit, vegetables, salads and herbs will be sourced from hand-picked growers and organic farmers wherever possible. There will also be a pastry counter and gelato bar with pastry chefs adding a magically theatrical touch to food by making waffles and pancakes right before guests’ eyes. Those who fancy sipping on something sweet can treat themselves to one of a selection of seasonally inspired classic Italian cocktails, either at the restaurant’s elegant bar or continental style on the terrace. A team of schoolgirls from the Queen’s School, Chester, who are studying for GCSE computer science, reached the finals of a national contest to find the UK’s best cyber security talent of tomorrow. Ellen Pierce (14), Katelyn Harrington (15), Polyanna Reed (13) and Imogen Quadling (15) travelled to the heart of Westminster to pit their technological wits against girls from nine other schools at the final of CyberFirst Girls competition. The team finished in the top 0.5 per cent of 8,000 entrants and took part in a full day of coding. They then presented their findings to a panel featuring TalkTalk chief executive Dido Harding, TechUK president Jacqueline de Rojas, NCSC director for digital government Alison Whitney and NCSC director for skills Chris Ensor. The Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School were the eventual winners, after finding 28 cyber clues, but the Cheshire school were not far behind after decoding 24. (thequeensschool.co.uk)

oof woof, it’s my little brother Aston’s 2nd birthday and, boy, have I been busy organising a pawtastic party for him! I do love to plan a good party, and Planet Play in Knutsford is my number one venue choice this year – a family-run venture that’s made a great impression with the local children, and even has a café serving delicious hot and cold snacks. The name says it all: a cosmic adventure awaits as you step through the doors, so hold tight for an amazing, out-of-this-world experience. For the younger players, the baby and toddler area is completely separate from the older children’s play zone, providing bright, soft play with sensory elements, a piano floor-mat for all you budding pianists out there, a ball pool and baby slide. For the older children, the larger play zone provides more challenging fun. Climb aboard the rocket and blast off to shoot down the four-lane Supersonic Wavy Slide and, for all you sports enthusiasts, there is a sports court complete with football nets and a basketball hoop. At last all the invitations are sent, the cake is ordered and my work is done – that’s one small step for a Pom, one giant leap for Aston – and now for a little quality time with the birthday boy. I love nothing more than putting my paws up and reading a good book, so I have taken Aston to our local Waterstones to introduce him to a few classics. Here we can lose ourselves in a world of fantastical characters whose adventures you are invited to join and, if you are a well behaved dog, you are welcome in the store to join the likes of Mog the Cat, Peter Rabbit and The Very hungry Caterpillar. Weekly events are held for all the family to embrace, so head on down to your local Waterstones and see what is happening where you are. For Aston and me, it’s a tail of true love. Until Next time, mission accomplished! Love & Licks

The Variety Vixens Variety, the children’s charity, invites excellent, eligible new supporters. Here are the stories of the three personalities behind the name

P

aula Castle, Jo Booth and Fiona Parkinson worked in the same industry for many years and, having been so touched by the children and their messages in the Variety videos, were keen to get together and do what they could, in their own small way, to bring more visibility to the work being carried out locally to improve young lives. All are busy working mums, all are devoted to Variety, the children's charity. But how did the Vixens come to life? Fiona begins “We were all aware of Variety, the children's charity, through various professional contacts and events. I was a guest at dinner back in 2009, with which Paula was involved, raising money for the charity. It was just after my son was born and I remember they showed a video of all the amazing work, and it really got to me. Straight away I approached Lyn [development director for Variety, the children's charity] and said if there was anything I could do to support her, then all she had to do was say so.”

“We pride ourselves on being a bit different from the usual corporate dinner and try to deliver an entertaining and relaxed evening” “Lyn's energy and enthusiasm for the charity are contagious," continues Paula. "I met Lyn and Judi at Variety North West 10 years ago through a colleague, when we started working together on bringing Variety fundraising events to the professional community in Manchester.

“Our first event was ‘Laughter at the Lowry’ in 2008, and since then we have developed our following to run the hugely successful annual ‘Legends’ event, generating over £50,000 a year for sick, disabled and disadvantaged children in the north west. We pride ourselves on being a bit different from the usual corporate dinner and try to deliver an entertaining and relaxed evening. The atmosphere in the room reminds me of a family get together and the dance floor is a must!” “We'd all been to events and knew each other, so we decided to pilot a small ladies’ event at the Great John Street Hotel in 2012 to raise funds for the children’s Christmas party,” explains Jo. "We got a great response from our friends and contacts in Manchester, and organised a relaxed and fun afternoon with all the things girls love, from afternoon tea to pop-up stalls and goody bags. The event was a great success and the format was born!” “We've just done a fabulous Prosecco afternoon tea with charity ambassadors, Nick and Eva Speakman," says Fiona with pride. "We sold out in days and raised more than we ever have. That proves it works. We're a nice union: there are no egos, we're all good at different things, and we're great friends, which is an amazing bonus.” But why Variety, the children's charity? Paula explains, "The causes that Variety supports locally are so important and where we can give a bit back, we want to. As a mother, anything we can do that helps improve the life of a family in need of support is positive and worthwhile.” “There's real visibility on where the money goes," says Jo. "You get to see the children and young adults you are helping and making a difference to. It's very humbling to see, yet so rewarding.” “And there's Lyn,” Fiona adds, and everyone else agrees. “She's the glue really. And the fourth Vixen and friend.” Not a team to rest on its laurels, Paula continues: “Our focus this year is on making our events bigger and better, fresh and fun.

PHOTOGRAPHY: STEPHENGLEAVEPHOTOGRAPHY.CO.UK

We've an amazing fashion show planned later in the year, where we’ll all be walking the catwalk, and there's the Legends of Industry to plan for, which is always a sell out.” “As mums it can really tug on your heart strings," comments Fiona. “So we make sure everyone has fun at our events. We do, too.” Happy with their team and what they have achieved so far, the Vixens are looking to reach for the stars with this year's events. Personally, though, managing a brimming diary and that all-important work-life balance are top of the agenda. (variety.org.uk)

THE HEAD

The new headmaster of Abbotsholme School, Matthew Boud-Self, tells us about his vision for the future of this wonderful boarding school in a rural setting on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border

I

fully support what the school aims to provide: knowledge, to help everyone achieve and succeed to the best of their individual academic ability; an understanding of the environment; challenges which build strength and test courage; a stimulating, enjoyable experience; and cultural enrichment which widens awareness of our responsibility to others. We are a small school where pupils are known as individuals. Knowing our pupils means that we can provide each one with just the right balance of challenge and support, to enable maximum achievement. Whatever the starting point, our pupils should experience a string of personal bests during their time at Abbotsholme, ultimately becoming the best version of themselves as they take their place in the wider world. Pupils will be given regular leadership opportunities as they progress through the school; a growing sense of

114

responsibility to their community and the wider world is the making of the Abbotsholmian. Our pastoral care will be the best it can possibly be, with pupils’ wellbeing at the heart of all we do. Character development is essential to the Abbotsholme education: a great education is about empowering young people and liberating them, helping them to make wise choices about what they should do in any given situation. We aim to develop character alongside intellectual attainment. The school’s values of honesty, humility, integrity, respect and courage are our guiding principles and, as a community, we must all hold ourselves to account according to these. The range of sporting and extra-curricular opportunities that pupils have access to allows Abbotsholmians to further develop as individuals. I am committed to the holistic education that Abbotsholme offers, as well as the importance of the arts, technology, farm, equestrian centre, outdoor education and sporting pursuits, in order to provide an all-round education beyond the classroom.

“Abbotsholme’s dedicated staff will continue to strive for the highest standards for all pupils” Abbotsholme’s dedicated staff will continue to strive for the highest standards for all pupils in their care, and I have been greatly impressed by the passion teachers have for their subjects, the willingness of all staff to go the extra mile and the additional support that staff offer to the whole school. Teachers and support staff all have the pupils’ best interests at heart; this is a special community full of people who truly care. I am totally committed to the future success of Abbotsholme School and I hope to enhance the many great aspects that make Abbotsholme a unique, nurturing and empowering environment for so many pupils to thrive in. The next Open Day is on 1 May, 9:00am-12.00pm (abbotsholme.co.uk; @AbbotsholmeSch)

HOMES & INTERIORS NEWS

Thinking of renovating? Talk it over with your estate agent WORDS: CRISPIN HARRIS MRICS

T

he market for home improvements and renovations is booming. The Office of National Statistics found that during 2016 we spent nearly £30 billion on home improvements – that’s £43 million a week! In the same year, a report from Nationwide Building Society found that home extensions or loft conversions can add 20 per cent to a house’s value, or more than £42,000 to the value of an average property. It’s no wonder that we are seeing a renovation boom. If you’re considering a renovation project there are a number of pitfalls to be aware of before pursuing these opportunities. Given the stakes involved I’d recommend talking over planned home improvements with a trusted local agent. This is absolutely crucial if the work is being done with the intention of adding value or selling on – some works make no difference to value. Others, such as increasing square footage or conservatories, can often add a lot of value. In addition, some refurbishments will make a property more saleable but not necessarily more valuable. Bathrooms and kitchens can be costly to renovate but sometimes don’t change price point in any significant way. Therefore, taking good advice before you dive into a project, and considering your aims and objectives, is crucial. Another pitfall is that renovators forget to consult their insurance policies before undertaking the work. If you don’t keep your insurance provider updated on major works you are undertaking, the policy could be invalidated, as it may not take into account the risks associated with a renovation or extension. A good broker is essential in this case, providing reassurance of a stable insurance policy and one that is not in breach of the property’s mortgage conditions. Finally, are you sure that your property is insured for the right value? Although policies tend to be on the generous side in terms of an upper claims limit, when undertaking renovations and extensions, it is often easier than you might think to exceed this value. It is also vitally important that insured values are not confused with open market values. Insurance value is the cost of rebuilding the home, not the price of the property.

Getting Personal Paul Barrow and Andy Craig of Mason Lord, talk construction and contemporary living

T

hese pages are typically devoted to the very latest in interior design, inspiring us with the newest trends and techniques. This month it is the turn of an award-winning construction company based in Booths Hall, Knutsford. And the photography for Mason Lord’s latest project, Silverhill in Alderley Edge, cannot fail to inspire us, as you can see. Director Paul Barrow tells us a little more about the company: “We specialise in individual tailored projects for high net worth individuals and work with the very best subcontractors throughout the region, but it’s about much more than that.

128

Homes and Interiors

People’s homes are not only their castles but extensions of their personality and people are getting more confident in showcasing that side of themselves. “Everyone has their own tastes so individuality is important. And it’s important to really understand how clients live their lives so that we can

design a home around them. From showcasing your car collection to well-organised gentlemen’s dressing rooms with bespoke watch cabinetry; and from entertainment spaces to beauty therapy rooms, we’ve done it! “Our challenge is then to make all the requirements fit into the space and adhere to planning. Mason Lord, staff have been doing this for more than 20 years and our experience shows that we can always add value to what is being created, whether that’s an opportunity, material or financial. “As Silverhill demonstrates there’s a huge trend in contemporary living; one you’d typically find in the Mediterranean or LA. People want a feeling of light and space and of embracing the outside. Even then, everyone has their own take on it. “Technology plays a large role in our planning, too. To be honest, it’s planned to the nth degree from the outset, all controlled via touch. Whether that’s the highest end music system, or aligning lighting to your furniture or power to art and sculpture. Or the perfect lighting for your Steinway.

129

INTERIORS INSPIRATION

“You start with a 2-D visualisation that ends up in 3-D and real life imagery but when you walk into the actual finished build for that first time, you can’t beat that feeling of ‘wow’, despite being intimately close to the process throughout!” Fellow director, Andy Craig, comments, “The company is growing fast, we’ve recently taken on a number of additional construction professionals, so things are going really well for us. There’s never a dull day. “We’ve built some of the region’s most luxurious superhomes but our work spans so many sectors that people will definitely be familiar with our builds. There are two unique, awardwinning singular dwellings; 60 Carrwood in Hale and Silverhill in Alderley Edge, both of which are exquisite. Recently we completed four bespoke houses in Altrincham for Laurus Homes, which won national recognition with Inside Housing for Development of the Year. So our expertise really is as broad as it is long.” Paul continues, “As a result of our private work we’ve been asked to create very unique commercial projects too, a bespoke Googleesque office space complete with indoor airstream springs to mind! This again, though, was all about the owner extending the lifestyle element into their office to get the very best from their staff. We’ve also built a bespoke synagogue, bespoke apartments and assisted social housing.”

“From showcasing your car collection... to beauty therapy rooms, we’ve done it! ”

Both Andy and Paul are exprofessional rugby players. Andy has just returned from Dubai where he entered the annual Masters rugby 7s tournament, playing alongside Andy Farrell, Nathan Hines and Denis Betts again, to raise money for Joining Jack charity. Andy explains, “Fellow rugby player, Andy Johnson, has a son who is terminally ill with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), and many members of the rugby community are ambassadors for his cause. We raised over £100,000, which is terrific.” So, what does the future have in store? “We want to be the go-to company for people looking to build a new home or refurbish an old building, concludes Andy. “Mason Lord can support them through the whole process: from sourcing the land, through design and planning, the construction process, then fixtures and fittings. We can even add the final touches with bespoke cabinetry soft furnishings and artwork, so we’re focusing on growing the side of the business that offers bespoke experiences. In essence, we want to help people achieve the home of their dreams.” their dreams.” (masonlord.co.uk)

STEPS TO BUILDING YOUR OWN SUPER HOME

When you have the means and imagination to build your own super home, there’s little stopping your property dreams from coming true. But you’ll need a firm, practical approach to your project – without it, there’s a chance for mistakes and oversights, which can cost money in the long run. Here’s Mason Lord’s expert guide

Determine Your Style

Always circle around to the end value vs the price tag of your investment, as the former should far outweigh the latter.

Choose Your Location

Architecture & Design

Without a viable, scenic site, your super home’s qualities will be diminished. Pick a place that inspires you, close to whatever amenities you require for the long haul.

At last, you can start mapping out your ideal home on paper. It must tick the boxes for both planning policy and style; planning permission must be gained before the real work can begin.

Interior Architecture

Wait For Approval

Furnish Your Home

This may be the only time in which we play the waiting game together… After the design proposition has left your hands, it’ll take roughly eight to ten weeks to undergo scrutiny, leading to a complete signoff if everything goes to plan.

As the interiors take shape, it’s time to start slotting furniture into your carefully planned rooms.

Identify The Land Not every patch of land is up for grabs and this is where the professionals can help. Don’t rule out the idea of an existing dwelling that you may demolish.

Choose a Specialist It’s vital to bring a development team on board early in the process.

Set Your Budget Before you proceed any further, go back to your budget, and see what’s really doable with those resources.

132

Construction Begins

Firm up a clear idea of your style from the outset. It will be the predicator for anything else you’ll do.

Manage Your Timescales The execution of your super home should be planned to perfection, if only to match the budget you locked in at Stage 5.

The air will be thick with the buzz of saws, the thud of brick on brick, and orders passing from a foreman to their regiment of yellow hard hats.

Although the exterior of your property is shaping up, some important decisions remain for the inside, and the material properties of your rooms.

Enjoy the results... Breathe easy… You’ve finally made it. The property is infused with the highest level of workmanship, and each room is exactly how you want it. Turn the key, step over the threshold and gaze astounded at what your development strategy has achieved!

CASE STUDY

Going to Great

LENGTHS We talk to local luxury pool construction experts, Portrait Pools, to hear how they’re pushing the boundaries when it comes to adding a touch of glamour to your home

I

t goes without saying that an indoor or outdoor pool is a thoroughly glamorous (and practical) way of injecting an extra ounce of luxury into your home – great fun, perfect for parties and an excellent fitness incentive, with the added bonus of making the occasional British heatwave all the more bearable (and helping to ease beach withdrawal between holidays). And, of course, there’s the fact that, if constructed professionally, a pool is likely to add value to your home – not to mention that, in today’s luxury market, houses worth over a certain amount are usually expected to come with all the obvious extras, luxury pools probably being near the top of the list. But where do you start? There are quite literally hundreds of options when it comes to choosing your pool – indoor or outdoor? Should you have an automatic pool cover? A rolling or floating floor (both of which allow you to replace the pool with a sturdy floor at the touch of a button)? And that’s before you even start to think about shapes, designs and tile patterns. If ever there were a good

136

time to call in the experts, it’s now. Enter local luxury pool construction company Portrait Pools, based in Bollington and established by current directors Andrew Rutherford and David Bland in 1990. Specialising in high-end, state-of-the-art swimming pools, what started as a two-man

Homes and Interiors

operation has grown into one of the leading UK pool-building companies, designing and installing luxury pools, spas, experience rooms, wetrooms/ bathrooms and wellness equipment. With many a majestic Cheshire property boasting the company’s handiwork – as well as a host of properties elsewhere in the UK – Portrait Pools’ reputation was well and truly cemented at January’s 2017 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, hosted by the British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA) and the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA). As the big winners of the night, the company came away with an incredible ten awards, including the ‘Commercial Pool of the Year’ bronze and silver awards, as well as two silvers in the

‘Residential Indoor Pools £100,000 £150,000’, and in ‘Residential Indoor Pools £150,000 - £200,000’ catagories – although the crowning glory was the brand’s five gold awards, for ‘Refurbishment Pool of the Year’, ‘Residential Indoor Pools £150,000 £200,000’, ‘Residential Indoor Pool over £200,000’, ‘Pool Contractor of the Year’ and ‘Outstanding Pool of the Year’. For those considering adding a bespoke pool or another of the company’s various offerings to their home, the most exciting news comes in the form of the new showroom which recently opened on Store Street, just off Bollington High Street. Here, all the various options are clearly displayed – from the latest stretch ceiling with smart lighting technology to an enormous range of ideas, finishes and tiles. There are also examples of a fully functioning cinema room, a state-of-the-art meeting/boardroom for potential clients, architects, contractors and interior designers, as well as a working steam and sauna room and a spa pool, so you can get a taste of what to add to your wishlist. A building adjacent to the showroom is also currently being transformed into what the team cryptically describe as ‘something a little bit different’ – but to find out exactly what, you’ll just have to wait and see. STEAL THEIR STYLE

Making The Most Of

YOUR GARDEN Whether it’s making you feel more Zen, creating an extra room or simply going a bit Good Life, our experts have all the inspiration and advice you’ll need to maximise your garden’s potential this summer

A

s spring blooms all around and the weather warms, the dim recollection dawns that many of us have lovely outside spaces that’re slowly coming back to life after the cold winter months. In honour of this fact, why not make this the year that you really make the most of your garden – perhaps by giving it a real design motif that complements that of your interiors, using it as an extra ‘room’, doing your bit for the environment by setting up a vegetable plot, or even creating your own stress-busting nature haven? If you’re not sure which option is right for you, never fear – we’ve rounded up the best of the north west’s outdoor specialists and asked them to shed some light on the subject. Happy gardening!

Make A Statement THE BIGGER PLANT COMPANY

I

f you’re looking to make a statement in your garden, an excellent option is the Wirralbased Bigger Plant Company, which has been supplying the north west with semi- and fully-mature trees and shrubs for more than 15 years. These plants are already of a significant size, meaning that they’re able to deliver instant impact to your outdoor space – perfect if you’re in search of the wow factor. The Bigger Plant Company is particularly strong in what it describes as ‘boundary options’, and always has evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs available, including clipped cones of thuja, ilex, photinia, elaeagnus and lots more, some of which are up to a thoroughly show-stopping nine metres high. The company also keeps a wide range of large rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias and azaleas in various architectural forms in stock, as well as taxus, ilex and buxus, while there’s also a selection of cloud-pruned

bonsai imported from japan, and olive trees – some more than 150 years old – together with the largest selection of tree ferns in the north. The family-owned and run company’s customers regularly sing the praises of its personal, dedicated service, whether it’s supplying and installing a small bush or a one-and-ahalf ton tree. Needless to say, if your garden is crying out for a boost of statement style, the Bigger Plant Company is the one to call. (0151 6323532; thebiggerplantcompany.co.uk)

Treat It Like An Extra Room BEAVER LOG CABINS

I

f you aren’t typically green-fingered, making the most of your garden can be especially tricky. If this epithet applies to you, transforming your outside space into an extra room is often an ideal solution, lessening the amount of upkeep demanded by the garden and expanding your home in one fell swoop. Boasting more than 13 years’ industry experience, Beaver Log Cabins is the go-to local supplier of outdoor structures, offering beautiful timber buildings which can be used for a huge number of purposes, from garden offices, garden buildings and cabins, to summer houses, gymnasiums, luxury saunas, annexes, beauty salons and even playrooms. All the company’s buildings are manufactured to its customers’ exact specifications using the finest lumber, and precision cut using the latest technology, ensuring a perfect fit of the interlocking timbers every time. The company is especially proud of its high-quality

142

craftsmanship and customer service, seamlessly guiding its customers through the entire process, from the designing and building stages, right through the installation (they also offer free delivery nationwide, which is rather good). The specialist Beaver Log Cabins team of in-house fitters transport, deliver and install each building, while the friendly staff at their showroom in Winsford are happy to show examples of the company’s work and discuss your ideas and requirements, should you be in need of inspiration and advice. Create An Outdoor Play Area SPRINGFREE

T

ransforming your garden – or part of it – into an outdoor play space is always an attractive option: giving your kids an added incentive to spend time in the fresh air, not to mention limiting the mess and noise of having a playroom indoors. All the same, having your carefully manicured garden strewn with toys isn’t ideal either – which is why a sleekly stylish trampoline is a great solution, providing a fun outdoor activity for all the family that happens to be a great way to exercise, too. Our go-to brand for trampolines is Springfree, established twenty years ago when Dr Keith Alexander tried to find a safe trampoline for his kids, but found there was no such thing. In fact, after conducting some research, he found that more than 100,000 kids a year were being sent to hospital because of traditional trampoline injuries. He was shocked by this statistic and, as an engineer and a father, was compelled to do something about it. Dr Alexander looked at what was causing trampoline injuries, then engineered out the impact zones responsible for the accidents. He first replaced the springs with rods, creating the revolutionary SoftEdge™ system, then developed a strong flexible safety

net that would stand up to all kinds of weather, and moved the frame below the jumping surface, making it impossible to fall on. The result was the first trampoline without springs, hence the name Springfree. With six trampolines to choose from – ranging from an 8ft round to its jumbo 13ft sq model – the brand carries options suitable for every size garden, and prides itself on the excellent quality and longevity of its products (each trampoline comes with an 8-year warranty on the frame and 2 years on any other part). And, what’s more, it’s a great excuse to let out your inner kid this summer. (01606 590 609; beaverlogcabins.co.uk)

LIGHT MY FIRE As the first signs of summer start to appear, we Brits are inevitably overtaken by the urge to arrange outdoor gatherings – evenings in pub gardens, camping trips and, of course, the time-honoured garden barbecue. It’s only when the party’s in full swing and the sun dips low that we suddenly recall, with horror, the reality of a British summer evening in all its nippy glory. That’s where the Solus Hemi 36” fire bowl comes in: not only keeping your guests toasty, but also providing an excellent piece of outdoor statement sculpture. At 16.5” tall, the fire bowl creates an instant gathering place, providing warmth and atmosphere, and even coming with a hardwood table top for days when you need a table rather than a fire pit. Lighting and electrical-planned layouts are also included in our designs, helping to ensure a true cohesion of all internal elements, fixtures and fittings. Ultimately, our aim with every project is to create a flawless finish with an eye for detail, incorporating our bespoke collection used throughout the rooms; each bespoke piece designed to perfectly fit the space and flow of the home. info@elledesign.co.uk (0161 980 4440; elledesign.co.uk)
