ast month I spoke about inspiration, and that theme continues into August. Here at the office we call Cheshire, we were lucky enough to chat to a gold medal-winning Olympian, a leading fashion designer and the head of sport at BBC Radio Manchester (p.34). We also have Collette Roche, who takes some time out of her busy schedule running Manchester Airport Group to speak with Jan Clarke about what makes her tick (p.28), and Deborah Davies of Todhunter Davies shares some of her favourite things in our new segment, Life in Design, on page 126.

Our style section is bursting with ideas for the summer – from jewellery to hair treatments and skincare – and, if you’re looking for some travel ideas that are that little bit unusual, I’d highly recommend turning to page 80 for our bucket list.

Name a few of your favourite places to be...

European countries and culture; Upstairs at the Grill in Chester; and FIELD Restaurant which was awarded best restaurant and best meal in Prague 2017. I have always wanted to go to South Africa, though. We are actually going for Christmas and New Year and I’m really looking forward to the culture, food and wine.

What/who inspires you? Stella Rimington – I am fascinated by MI5 and her work.

What was the last gift you gave someone? I have two teenage daughters, so buying ‘gifts’ for them is continuous! Shoes, dresses, make-up, phones etc…

Tell us a secret or fun fact? Inspirational You Being different, being you is your unique USP and the secret to your success. Be kind to yourself, suggests Melissa Porter

T

here are record numbers of depressed people around the world who choose to take medication to deal with their negative emotions. Depression is principally linked to not having your emotional needs met and can be matched to your expectations not aligning with your reality. The thoughts and beliefs driving a depressed person’s behaviour and choices are not congruent with – well, they don’t know with what, but something isn’t sitting right inside, and the effect is feeling sad and having low energy, as if you feel your life has no purpose or meaning.

Scroll through Instagram and Facebook, and you’ll find a visual candy store of what we perceive as ‘successful and inspirational’ types, all showcasing their toned bodies and get-rich schemes. This can be demotivating for many, and might bring forward feelings of jealousy and self-loathing.

You might be asking yourself ‘How can so many of these people have their ducks in a row when I’m unable to?’, ‘How come they have the answers to feeling inspired and happy and I don’t?’. This social media movement has contributed to record levels of depression and numbers of people medicating.

Comparison aids depression. From this day forth you are NEVER allowed to compare yourself to another person. There’s a bazillion differences between you and the entire world population, so comparing yourself on one aspect – such as your body or amount of money in your bank account – is plain dumb. It’s not a fair comparison as there are a

trillion variables. Stop. Instead, choose to focus on you. If you feel jealous, there is unhealthy behaviour at play and ultimately your choice to judge others sees this unresolved within yourself. I’ll bet if you judge others, you’re mean to yourself. Dig deep and unearth all negative, limiting self-talk that goes on within, about yourself and others. Jealousy, judgement and self-loathing are not inspirational.

Designer clothes, shoes and handbags are simply the direction in which some people are choosing to allocate their finances.

Wearing a trendy bag does not make you inspirational nor a success – unless you designed it, earned it or are wearing it with some outstanding and unique energy and style. Stop idolizing these designer clothes-wearing types of people. Most of them are unfulfilled, despite appearances to the contrary.

These days I consider myself an inspirational success when I sit through the most boring of meetings without insulting someone with my naturally direct manner. I’m a success when I allocate time each day to eating healthily, meditating and doing some form of exercise.

Inspirational is the one who lives their day feeling fulfilled and full of energy. It is not inspirational to brag, shame or seek to humiliate others. This reveals only your unresolved limiting, fear-inspired behaviour. Love, kindness and compassion are inspirational, however that shows up for you.

Collette Roche talks to Jan Clarke about Manchester Airport Group, her involvement with the Northern Powerhouse Partnership and being an inspiration to her daughters

I

admit, I had a few ‘pre-flight’ nerves before my meeting with Collette Roche, the Acting Managing Director of the vast machine that is Manchester Airport Group. I’d somehow imagined stern, cool and sharp-suited.

However, on a recent Saturday morning, Collette welcomed me to her beautiful Cheshire home; there was not even a hint of reserve and the kettle was soon on. We joined her husband, Graham and their two girls, Megan and Isobelle, in the family kitchen, where talk centred around the girls’ social timetable for the day, as is the norm with teenage girls. Obviously, weekdays are extremely busy for Collette and weekends are a precious time. Collette says, “Life is hectic and for me it’s

very important that we spend quality time as a family.” So, with calendars synched and plans made for their afternoon together, I took the opportunity to chat with Collette.

From the outset, Collette lists her appointment with the Manchester Airport Group as her best job ever. The executive team has doubled the size of the business and established Manchester Airport as the true gateway of the north. It’s clear she’s proud to be a member of this successful team. Her position today is testament to an impressive career path which began when she graduated from Lancaster University in the late 1990s and started her working life as Employee Relations Manager for the Ford Motor Company, in Dagenham. Collette explains, “The role was a real baptism of fire as I was straight out of University. It was gritty and challenging. It was there that I quickly learnt that knowledge and skills are important, but that drive and building relationships are what make the difference.”

And drive is something Collette has plenty of.

down the country to see her then fiancé, Graham, they decided to set a date for their wedding.

Collette was already climbing the career ladder with Ford but, boldly decided to take this opportunity to relocate back to the north. In August 1999, she moved back to the north west, got married, bought a house and embarked on a new position with Siemens. So, not someone who does things by halves. For Collette, this move was born out of her desire to achieve her life goals of being able to have a family, as well as build a career. Speaking of family, Collette tells me, “I’m very fortunate that I have a close family and most importantly, an incredibly supportive husband, who has helped me achieve my goals.”

Her job at Siemens saw her being responsible for bidding, winning and transitioning business from the public to the private sector as part of the Government’s Private Finance Initiative. Collette says, “It was this position that taught me so much

about leadership, operations, client management and culture exchange.” All vital skills for her role today. While working at Siemens, Collette’s ambition to start a family was realised and in 2002, on the day she was due to finish work for maternity leave, she gave birth to their first daughter. Without taking her foot off the gas, Collette adapted to life as a new mother and tells me that, between cuddles and breast feeding, she attended interviews to secure her next career move. She was soon developing overseas business for United Utilities, along with developing her parenting skills at home. She is inspiring: where many women compartmentalise working life and motherhood, Collette sees it as one big picture and her two roles co-exist. Collette laughs, “For me, it doesn’t matter if it’s work or home, everything just goes on the ‘to do’ list.” This is some very impressive list-writing skills.

After seven years at United Utilities and the birth of their second daughter, Collette made the

move to Manchester Airport Group. The ambition of the Group is the perfect environment for Collette and, for her, there’s never a dull day.

Collette tells me, “Managing one of the busiest airports in the UK and ensuring the 26 million plus passengers who come through the door each year, arrive at their intended destinations safely, is definitely a challenge. The airport works in partnership with 70 airlines together with government bodies such as Border Force, GMP,

and CTU.” She continues, “But, it really is the most amazing job. We provide over 22,000 jobs and the airport has a huge impact economically on the region. It’s extremely rewarding to be a part of something so great.” With the airport continuing to expand, there’s no sign of her slowing down any time soon.

If this wasn’t enough, Collette is also committed to several other roles in addition to her day job, including being a Non-Executive director at JW Lees, a governor on the board of Manchester Metropolitan University and has more recently been appointed to the board for the Northern Powerhouse Partnership (NPP), chaired by George Osborne. Collette explains, “The NPP, is essentially about bringing together business, civic and educational leaders across the region to maximise the sum of our parts and grow economic prosperity.” This is something Collette is extremely passionate about. She says,

“I was born and educated in the north and have worked in almost every city here.” She’s also particularly excited to have also been asked to become involved with the Airport Group’s ‘World of Work’, a work experience and community outreach programme. This is a great opportunity for her to be involved in a scheme which is on track to provide support for 50,000 children by 2020 and is currently striving to raise £500,000 in charitable donations.

Collette comes from a working-class background. Her family constantly encouraged her and, growing up, her parents always told her, ‘The sky’s the limit’. She is now a ‘powerhouse’ in her own right and her work has led to her being nominated in the top 100 inspiring females. Supporting and cheerleading her daughters and other women is important to her and something she tries to do constantly.

Amanda Wakeley Fashion designer

The 25-year history of fashion house ‘Amanda Wakeley’ could be the plot for a gripping film.

Starting off as a twenty-something fashion model in 1980s New York, it was in 1990 that she launched her signature line in London with a £20,000 loan from her father. Having built the brand from a single studio in London’s Chelsea into a global fashion label dressing the world’s most famous women, a bitter divorce in 2000 left the Chester-born designer just a minor shareholder in the business that bore her name.

Amanda found herself at the mercy of men whose focus was fixed on money not fashion.

When the business was sold to a Deutsche Bank distressed debt trader in 2008, she resigned. Not one to sit back and watch her dreams and hard

Just a few months later Amanda acquired the brand name as intellectual property and began the buy-back of her business. She was awarded an OBE in 2010 for services to the fashion industry, and has won numerous accolades – including three British Fashion Awards.

“I realised at a very young age that clothes could be empowering,” she says. “I was lucky to have a full and varied dressing-up box, thanks to two glamorous grandmothers, and it was amazing how different items could ignite different emotions and feelings. A bad hair day or an ill-fitting garment can really affect how you feel about yourself, and I think women understand this better than men. Some men have quite a limited wardrobe – a uniform, if you like, of suits and ties. Women are presented with endless possibilities and their choices have a huge impact.

“Clothes allow you to present the very best version of yourself. When the cut is right and the fabric and colour are flattering, they can give you

an amazing confidence. You feel relaxed, you feel good and you walk just that little bit taller.”

Her professional success would be inspiration enough, but more admirable still is Amanda’s vast amount of women-focused charity work, in the course of which she has co-chaired the committee for the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer appeal and become an advocate for international organisation Women for Women, which helps female survivors of war.

It is always intriguing to learn who garners respect from influential figures – and, for Amanda, it is women everywhere. “I think my mother has always inspired me,” she explains.

“But I’m also inspired by many of my customers.

They’re so varied and I love that – it’s not just one type of woman, yet they all seem to be multiskilled and multi-talented, super busy women on the run who want to look effortlessly chic.” (amandawakeley.com)

Sarah Collins

Head of Sport at BBC Radio Manchester Sarah Collins has been at the BBC for over twenty years. It’s her dream job. “I’m not saying it’s not challenging – there’s a story breaking every other day – but it is an amazing job, and an amazing patch to cover. Not bad for a girl!”

With a love of sport and a desire to be in radio, it’s the perfect combination for success.

That, and a lot of hard work. “I began as a broadcast assistant at the lowest level and really got the bug. I spent two years in London for BBC 5Live, returned, and have been sports editor here for nine years, heading up the sport department. I do have a great team around me, for which I’m grateful.”

Clearly proud of her team and her home region, Sarah continues, “As a region we have so much to offer when it comes to sport with seven

Gold medal-winning hockey player Born in Liverpool, 28 year-old Sam has already achieved more than many sportsmen and women do in a lifetime. Playing for the Great Britain hockey team since the age of 17, and also finding time to study sport and exercise science at Leeds Metropolitan, she’s already racked up an incredible 128 international caps and medals.

Among this long list are a bronze medal, three silver medals and gold medals at the 2015 EuroHockey Championships and – her greatest achievement to date – at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. But that’s not all – in addition to being a role model and extolling the benefits of hard work, Sam is now also working with charities, clubs and companies with the goal of promoting women through sport. One of these is local hair salon brand Andrew Collinge, for which she fronts the new ‘CO by Andrew Collinge’ range campaign.

“When the opportunity to work with Andrew Collinge arose, I jumped at it, because not only was it local and a quality product, but we also shared similar attitudes towards empowering women,” she explains, adding that she also tries to keep a healthy balance between her personal and professional lives, making time to do things totally separate from work, and having ‘me days’ – “by which I mean days spent in my pyjamas, totally dedicated to what I want to do, watch and eat!” (greatbritainhockey.co.uk; andrewcollinge.com)

local football clubs, from Oldham to Man City; Super League; Sale Sharks in Rugby Union; and Lancashire Cricket. I don’t know many other regions that have this much to offer, and I very much believe that we need to celebrate it.”

Away from MediaCity, Sarah coaches at Dominoes Netball Club and has just come back from a trip to Prestatyn with 25 girls. “At the club we’re mentoring the next generation, but also providing a safe environment to empower them. I’m a feminist, and seeing the girls who come to us grow and believe in themselves is what it’s all about.”

Sarah is also responsible for the BBC’s partnership with the North West Football Awards. “We got involved about five years ago after one of our reporters was nominated. I was blown away by it and immediately got in touch with Laura Wolfe to see how we could support it.

“We live in an amazing region and sometimes we can forget this” Today, we’re the broadcast media partner. What I love is that it’s not just about all the fluffy stuff.

It’s about the whole region and celebrates all that we are doing at all levels and fields. So, for example, we created an award for the Neville family one year, for their contribution to sport.

Most people just think of the brothers, but forget dad Neville Neville, mum Jill who basically runs Bury Football Club and Phil’s twin-sister Tracey, who was capped at 19 for England netball and is now head coach. This is what it’s all about and I feel strongly that we need to celebrate this. I’ll say it again: we live in an amazing region and sometimes we can forget this.”

Back to Sarah though, I have to ask if she has any spare time and what that entails. There’s a knowing laugh. “Beyond radio and netball, I love quality time with my eight god-children.

And the odd glass of Prosecco! In the future I’d love to do something with disadvantaged children, too.” For now, though, her passion and pride are directed to inspiring the current and next generation of sports fans and players. Jennifer Atkinson CEO at ITC Travel Group

The week before I interview Jen the company unveils a new look for the luxury tour operation arm of its business and annouces the appointment of Mal Barritt as COO. It’s an exciting time.

Thirteen years ago Jen joined ITC as marketing manager and, aged just 34, became CEO. “I took over at the worst time, in 2009. We were a luxury travel company in a credit crunch and we’d experienced our worst ever trading year. Our chairman and owner, Drew Foster, was also sadly diagnosed with terminal cancer.

“My attitude has always been to look forward, so I was the first to say ‘I can turn the business around, let me have a go’. I have always been an optimist. In business and in life, I believe it is better to seek forgiveness for something you have done, rather than wait for permission and live with regrets.”

The company has grown ever since, so much so, that in 2014 Jen undertook a management buy-out.

“I was on holiday with my husband Dave and son Billy, taking some time to reflect. I was toying with the idea, but what I knew about an MBO you could write on the back of a stamp. Fortuitously I met one of our clients out there, Paul Pindar, who’d not long retired from Capita, where he bought and sold companies. He said he’d back me.

“This gave us the means to grow the business, and in 2015 we expanded, bringing Western and Oriental Travel Ltd’s four tour operators under our name, and then in 2016 receiving a multi-million pound investment from NorthEdge Capital in a private equity deal. The investment gave us what we needed to grow sustainably and successfully.

“While all this was going on, the business was being filmed for BBC2 documentary The Millionaires’ Holiday Club and Dave and I had welcomed a daughter, Belle. The day after the shock of the Manchester bomb, Natalie Anglesey meets with musician Peter Hook of legendary Joy Division and New Order fame

ut for some time now Peter has been making a mark with his own band, The Light, which recently performed at the Royal Albert Hall. As we discussed the tragedy, his eyes darkened. “The first we heard was when our 18-year-old daughter Jessica rang from inside the Arena to say there’d been a loud bang and someone shouted 'It's a bomb'.

Fortunately she was three rows from the front so it took much longer to get out as the exits were packed.

“As a parent you can imagine our panic until friends brought her safely home. Now I have dad-guilt about letting her go without me and she has survivor-guilt which is only to be expected. It’s definitely a day Manchester will never forget.”

Sitting in the sunshine in Alderley Edge, with his beloved dog at his feet, it’s difficult to reconcile Hooky’s old hard-man image with this contented family man. “Those who ask why Manchester has proved so resilient, coping with this horrendous tragedy which killed 22 young people and injured 59, just don’t understand the spirit of Manchester. We survived two World Wars and an IRA bomb and that survival instinct is part of our DNA. “Watching television footage of people, from different backgrounds and beliefs, helping the victims and offering free food and transport to

safety – you realise that basically we’re all the same. My heart goes out to all those families who’ve lost loved ones.”

As we reminisce, it’s clear Peter is proud of his children. From his first marriage there’s his daughter Heather and son Jack, who plays bass guitar in The Light. “Jack thinks he’s better than me so I have to remind him who is boss,” he smiles. But he speaks sadly about his marriage to comedian Caroline Aherne which ended after three years. He subsequently married Rebecca with whom he had Jessica.

“Becky saved my life and now I’m fit and healthy and running my eleventh marathon!”

Hooky, as Peter likes to be known, recalls that normally he would pick his daughter up after a concert. “I’d chat to the ticket touts at the entrance – so I’m lucky to be here. I also escaped the Japanese earthquake and the Thailand tsunami so somebody up there must like me!”

“The rich and famous had to mingle with ordinary clubbers and we thought that was democratic” Born in Ordsall in 1956, Peter’s parents divorced when he was three and when his mother eventually remarried he took his stepfather’s surname, Hook, and eventually the nickname Hooky. Because of his stepfather's work, he spent part of his childhood in Jamaica.

“As you can imagine, it was an idyllic childhood swimming in the sea every day and private schooling before returning to Ordsall and Salford Grammar School. I had a couple of jobs when I left but I was only passionate about one thing and that was music.”

Now the singer, songwriter, composer, multiinstrumentalist and record producer is best known as the bassist and co-founder, with Bernard Sumner, of rock band Joy Division in 1976. But when fame was at its height, the tragic suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis shocked everyone.

“Ian was a lovely, charming and very funny man.

Nowadays his mental health problems may have been properly treated, but back then it was never openly discussed. His daughter Natalie still keeps in touch and comes to our gigs. We always pay homage to him and it’s always great to see her.”

Eventually the band reformed as New Order and Hooky played bass with them until 2007. In spite of success there were tempestuous times.

“We’d row, break up and reform, row, break up and reform. So over the years I also worked

with lots of other bands like Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses and the Durutti Column. I also recorded with lots of bands.”

Hooky co-owned the Suite Sixteen recording studio in Rochdale where a blue plaque marks the site as they were major studios in the history of punk music. He played a special concert in Rochdale that day, with proceeds donated to the Back Door Music Project for youngsters.

In 2007, Hooky announced that he and Bernard Sumner were no longer working together. “In the end I formed my own band The Light. The following year we performed a selection of Joy Division and New Order songs in Paris and Brussels and compiled The Hacienda

Acid House Classics. Eventually we performed them in concert which has proved popular.

“But the first time on stage I was nervous. One hundred musicians from the Manchester Camerata turned to look at me for guidance and, as I can’t read a note of music, I just started to play and they joined in! Now we’ve played in big venues all over the country and will be playing this summer in Castlefield and the Bridgewater Hall in November.”

In 2009, Hooky wrote a book about his time as co-owner of The Hacienda, along with friend and Factory Records’ supremo, Tony Wilson, entitled How Not to Run a Club. “The Hacienda was sold in the end but I loved the fact that there was no VIP

In spite of that, in 2010 Hooky opened a new club in the old head offices of Factory Records in Manchester and on opening night of FAC 251 – The Factory, The Light performed. To mark the 30th anniversary of Ian Curtis’ death, on 18 May, the band played a set of Joy Division songs. It was the start of many popular recordings.

Two years later Hooky helped launch a new master's degree in Music Industry Management and Promotion at the University of Central Lancashire. A chance encounter prompted him to criticise existing programmes which lacked hands-on experience. “Now students combine academic studies with a placement in a commercial music industry institution” In return he was awarded an honorary fellowship.

Two films have also been made about that heady period in Manchester music. 24 Hour Party People, focused on Factory Records, while the 2007 film, Control, focused on the life of Ian Curtis. “Control was the nearest to the truth and it’s sad that we lost Ian, and Bernard and I are still embroiled in legal battles. If we could just meet and talk, it may have been resolved by now.

In fact it was he who suggested I buy a house here in Alderley Edge.

“I enjoy the café culture and the restaurants and after the rock ‘n’ roll days I feel calm here.

Manchester is a cosmopolitan city and I'm a multi-culturalist.”

Looking fit and healthy, Hooky ran in the Manchester Marathon and now he’s looking forward to the Rewind Festival at Capesthorne Hall. “It’s great meeting up with old mates like Rick Astley and seeing all those happy families enjoying themselves. It’s a constant wonder to me that after 41 years in the music business, I’ve still got passion for it and my music is still being appreciated. I know how lucky I’ve been.”

A meeting with

MR PARMIGIANI Parmigiani Fleurier is developing a timepiece that could point towards the future of watchmaking. Richard Brown talks pushing the boundaries with company founder, Michael Parmigiani

T

he 1990s was the decade of the eponymous rock-star watchmaker.

Franck Muller kicked things off when he established the original off-the-wall watch marque in 1991. Industry enfant terrible, Roger Dubuis, joined the party in 1995, before Richard Mille exploded onto the scene four years later.

In between, another self-styled, albeit less shouty watchmaker announced his arrival – Michel Parmigiani launched Parmigiani Fleurier in May 1996. Along with Muller, Dubuis and Mille, Parmigiani would help usher in the age of the avant-garde indie when, a decade later, brands like De Bethune (2002), Hautlence (2004), Greubel Forsey (2004), Maîtres du Temps (2005) and MB&F (2005) all came to market.

In the ensuing years, horologic discourse has tended to centre around the fevered attempts of watch houses, large and small, to verticalise their production processes in a bid to make as much of a timepiece as possible ‘in house.’ The

more of a watch you can manufacture without the assistance of third party suppliers, the notion goes, the more accomplished a watchmaker you are. Thanks to his proximity to one Monsieur Pierre Landolt, president of the Sandoz Family Foundation, an organisation established in 1964 to promote Swiss entrepreneurship and innovation, Parmigiani achieved autonomy quicker than most.

Having started out as an independent clock restorer, Parmigiani was, by the 1980s, the principle custodian of the Sandoz collection – an assortment of Fabergé eggs, pocket watches, mechanical singing birds and other animal automata amassed by Swiss artist, musician and philanthropist, Maurice-Yves Sandoz, in the early 20th century.

In 1996, with the Sandoz Foundation as patron, Parmigiani gained the means to create his own company. Over the next six years, the brand established a centre capable of producing almost every aspect of a mechanical timepiece by

itself – from dials, cases and movements, to screws, pinions and spindles.

It comes as no surprise, then, to hear that Parmigiani considers sovereignty fundamental to serious watchmaking: “If you buy a movement that already exists, you cannot have any influence on the form, the components, the characteristics.

When you verticalise, you can do everything your own way; if you want to create a component that’s shaped a unique way, you can. You can create things in a much shorter time-frame, too.”

The Kalpa Hebdomadaire, Parmigiani Fleurier’s debut wristwatch, arrived in 1999. Two years later, the brand announced a partnership with one of the world’s most revered supercar manufacturers.

“Bugatti was looking for a new watchmaking partner,” says Parmigiani. “The company it was looking for had to have a verticalised production process, the founder had to be alive, and it became obvious we were the right choice.”

The subsequent Parmigiani Bugatti Type 370 featured a pioneering lateral time display, which enabled someone holding a steering wheel to tell the time without tilting their wrist. Inside, a regulating organ, gear train, power reserve and two barrels were set across five different oval-shaped mainplates. Housed in a tubular rose-gold case, the watch resembled a mini engine block.

The future of watchmaking?

In January 2016, Parmigiani announced a timepiece that forced the entire watch world to sit up and take note. The most talked-about wristwear from the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, one of the industry’s two major trade shows, may have still been in the concept stage, but if the ‘Sefine’ could make good on the promises Parmigiani was making,

it would become one of the most significant footnotes in modern horologic history.

Like most timepieces, the Sefine would be powered by a mainspring, gear train and balance wheel. Unlike most timepieces, which typically oscillate at a frequency of either 18,000 or 28,000 vibrations per hour, and measure their power reserves in hours, the Sefine would beat at 115,200, and run for 70 days.

The bold claims were the result of a new type of escapement, a mechanism that has remained, for the most part, unchanged since its invention in 1754.

Whereas the balance wheel in most watches swings through an arc of somewhere between 260 and 320 degrees, the arc of the Sefine’s balance wheel is just 16 degrees. Add an escape wheel with extremely small teeth, a lever consisting of extra long and flexible silicon pallets, and other low-friction materials, and you get a watch that beats at an incredibly high frequency while using far less energy.

Since its announcement, we’ve heard relatively little about the Sefine’s progress. So where are we now?

“We’re still working on it,” says Parmigiani. “We have completed the fundamental research, the physics, and now we are in the application phase. We’ve mastered the technology, the materials, and are looking at applying this technology to a timepiece. We’re able to deliver it in a large format, and now the idea is to make it smaller.”

At the start of this year, Parmigiani Fleurier lowered its entry level price point by presenting the first ever steel version of its ultra-thin (7.97mm) Tonda 1950. It’s now possible to become a Parmigiani punter for £7,950. In the warped world of luxury watches, where a brand of this pedigree is concerned, you can consider that a bargain. (parmigiani.com)

hether it’s due to health concerns or merely wanting to prevent the signs of ageing, we are more aware of the importance of sun care than ever before. Fortunately for us, this is arguably the most exciting category in beauty right now, with groundbreaking new formulas and innovations on track to change sun cream as we know it. No more sticky, oily-textured formulas that give you breakouts and need to be reapplied every 15 minutes; today’s offerings are lightweight and fuss-free, with most offering added extras.

Promising ‘sun care with benefits’, Eau Thermale Avène offers sun protection specifically targeted to ageing and acne-prone skin. glow guru Madeleine Shaw talks to Jan Clarke about the release of her third book, impending motherhood and the real secret to feeling fabulous

M

adeleine Shaw is a trained nutritional coach, author and absolute internet sensation. The self-made guru has a very impressive social media following, a YouTube channel, an inspirational blog, her own app and three books to her name.

With a 270k following on Instagram alone, she’s one of the top names creating a healthy lifestyle revolution – even though she’s not always had a healthy approach to food.

I rushed into Manchester on an exceptionally warm day to meet Madeleine, arriving with a rather sad, pre-packed sandwich and more of a ‘flush’ than a ‘glow’. As I waited for her to join me, I checked her Instagram feed. The latest posting declared she too had, “just prepared something quick before heading out to the book launch event”, but hers was a

Her story began when, aged eighteen, she moved to Australia as part of a gap year and fell in love with the Australian lifestyle and approach to healthy eating.

“The Australians have an amazing attitude to health and food,” she tells me. “I learnt so much during my time there, including how to cook the right foods.”

Back then, Madeleine had the usual eating habits of a an eighteen-year-old girl: snacking on-the-go to fit around a hectic social life and being a slave to all things low fat.

“I learnt so much during my time [in Australia], including how to cook the right foods” visually appealing and nutritionally magnificent selection of rye crisp breads with guacamole, salmon, tomato and pumpkin seeds. I definitely needed to learn a few things.

In the flesh, Madeleine is exactly as her photographs and book covers appear. She has perfect skin, glossy hair and an infectious smile. She arrives flawless, in an elegant sundress and a complete picture of health, complete with a 29-week baby bump.

“Like most people, I thought that the way to stay healthy and slim was to eat low-fat products.

I spent my life eating low-fat yoghurts and drinking diet cola, thinking I was making a good choice.” Today, she will tell you, the notion that low-fat products are the answer to staying slim is very outdated. They’re full of sugar and left her suffering from energy dips throughout the day. She gradually learnt to adopt a way of eating that nourished her from the inside out: a diet full of wholefoods, fresh ingredients and healthy fats. These foods provided her with more energy, stopped the daily dips and resulted in clearer skin and an overall vitality. Madeleine now combines healthy eating with regular yoga and meditation, living proof that this way of life is the secret to feeling fabulous.

She has now written three books; Get the Glow, Ready Steady Glow and her latest, A Year of Beautiful Eating, a call to arms to eat fresh, seasonal produce.

“Understanding the nutrients foods contain goes hand in hand with seasonality,” Madeleine explains. “You need to boost your vitamin D level in winter, protect your skin with SPF-rich smoothies in summer and eat healthy fats to combat dry skin, whatever the season.”

Thoughts of my soggy sandwich are long forgotten. I can’t wait to sit down with her and enjoy the three-course meal which has been prepared by the chef at the Harvey Nichols Brasserie as part of her book tour event. The menu comprises some of her favourite dishes from the book, starting with a summer lovin’ salad bowl with humus, buckwheat, beetroot, cucumber and mango, a main course of tray-roasted cod then a delightful rhubarb and coconut rice pudding. Finally, we round off the meal, appropriately, with freshly baked madeleines, served with strawberry chia jam.

with nutrients. It’s a revelation to me that tucking into rice pudding and madeleines can be deemed to be healthy eating. Madeleine smiles, saying “This is not a restrictive diet. It’s a long-term lifestyle choice.”

Excited about the prospect of becoming a mum, she’s planning a short maternity leave followed by an expansion of her blog, further nutritional exams to progress her coaching work and then possibly writing another book.

Her fan base already includes mothers keen to instil healthy eating practices in their children.

“My recipes are quick and easy and use foods which are readily available,” she tells me. “And this makes them perfect for busy mums, too.”

As for me? I leave with her book in hand, excited to try her recipes and, hopefully, find my own long-lost glow.

obbyists use them recreationally, militaries employ them for airstrikes and the Fire Brigade utilise their aerial capabilities to save lives. Now, the unmanned aerial vehicle, or drone, is being used by Jaguar Land Rover.

The company’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) unit has designed and engineered a bespoke version of the new Land Rover Discovery for use by the Austrian Red Cross.

‘Project Hero’ was presented to the world’s media for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show ealrier this year.

It’s hoped the vehicle will help the Red Cross save lives by speeding up response times. With the drone airborne, live footage can be transmitted to the Red Cross’s emergency response teams, allowing them to assess emergencies faster. (landrover.com)

word ‘average’ in connection with a Bugatti owner – has 83 other cars, three jets and a yacht. And to that you can add houses, art collections, jewellery and goodness knows what else.

Pity the poor old Bentley owner who can only stretch to having eight cars in their collection.

What you might not have in your collection, though, is a Bugatti bicycle. But thanks to a collaboration between the marque and PG, a German bicycle manufacturer, you can now put that right.

The PG Bugatti bike was, in true new-car fashion, launched at the recent Geneva Motor Show. It was designed – and named – by Bugatti, but engineered and built by PG, which stands, rather charmingly, for Pimp Garage.

As you might expect, the bike is at the cutting edge of two-wheel design. It is made, almost

o, you’re ready to splash out €2.4 million on your brand new Bugatti Chiron. You’ve visited the UK’s only Bugatti showroom, on Berkeley Square, and been flown over to the atelier in Molsheim, in Alsace, where the cars are built by hand.

You’ve chosen your colours, your optional extras, your trim materials and you’ve had a test drive – though you didn’t quite manage to get it to its top speed, which is limited to 260 mph (yes, really).

But now you have a nine-month wait before conception turns into delivery. How can you fill that hole in your garage?

Well, it won’t be with another car, that’s for sure.

According to the urbane Wolfgang Dürheimer, the CEO of both Bugatti and Bentley, the average Bugatti owner – and it’s not often you can use the

The frame is also unusual in that it has just one seat stay and one chain stay – on opposite sides – while there’s a toothed-belt drive rather than an oily chain to turn the back wheel. It’s a single-speed affair, no fancy 24-gear set here.

Comfort comes courtesy of handlebars equipped with shock absorbers and, being a Bugatti, personalisation is the name of the game.

An owner can specify special colours for the frame, coloured carbons and different leather types for the saddle. But don’t expect to use this bicycle to nip to the pub. According to its maker, this is a ‘piece of sports equipment that is not intended for use on public roads’.

And what does this all cost? Well, if you have just ordered a Chiron to squeeze into your packed garage, the price tag of around £39,000 – rising to £69,000 if you want to go for the full custom treatment – won’t be too troubling.

That said, you might be worried about how common it’s going to be. Bugatti is going to make a mere 500 examples of the 1,500 hp Chiron (and 200 of those were ordered within days of the car being launched), but PG plans to make 677 examples of the one-person-power Bugatti bike.

Just think, 177 people will be given access to the machine without having to own a Chiron first.

entirely, of high-strength carbon fibre, with a smattering of titanium and aluminium used for mechanical parts. As a result, it weighs less than five kilograms and is said to be the lightest urban bike ever made.

All the carbon components, which together account for 95 per cent of the bike, are handcrafted using techniques found in the motorsport and aeronautic industries. The aim is to provide a light-weight design with rigidity. This high tensile fibre performance material is used for the frame, fork, wheel rims, seat, crank and brake (note, just the one brake).

The cross-sections of the frame are oversized for additional strength and then ‘optimised for the aerodynamic demands of high speeds’. High speed is clearly a relative term, bearing in mind Chiron’s maximum velocity.

J

oseph Pulitzer, Hungarian-American newspaper publisher once said: “Publicity, publicity, publicity is the greatest moral factor and force in our public life.” A man of journalistic integrity, his legacy lives on through the Pulitzer Prize, and now in the form of Hotel Pulitzer in Amsterdam. To write a review in the name of one of the leading figures in publishing is a little daunting, to say the least.

Pulitzer’s grandson, Peter Pulitzer, an American farmer-turned-businessman, bought 12 dilapidated canal houses in 1960, and converted them into a hotel – the first of its kind. The now-connecting 25 canal houses underwent a renovation last year, overhauling the 230-guest rooms and suites and adding the Tuinzaal, the hotel’s elegant meeting and event space. The Pulitzer presence is felt as soon as you enter the hotel, with its mini-library in the lobby which includes a book from each winner of the esteemed literary award (and a vintage drinks trolley with a bottle of Johnny Walker Gold Label Reserve as its centrepiece).

South African interior designer Jack Strauss led the renovation, and the result is a playful harmony of history and modernity. Every piece of furniture in the hotel has been carefully curated, and none are obvious bedfellows – but it works so well, reminding me of a Wes Anderson film. The colour palette is pastel pink and dusky blue, with emerald green and muted yellows dotted around

– it’s an assault on the senses of the best kind.

We stayed in one of the loft rooms – be warned, if you have a 6ft 8 partner like myself, you might hear some bumps in the night (their head on the historic beams) – with a seating area, giant bed, marbled bathroom with Le Labo products, retro-style phone and a cafetière and little packets of Dutch coffee and delicious stroopwafels.

The hotel’s main restaurant Jansz (there’s a more casual option called Pause, too), serves beautifully crafted modern classics with an easy-going Dutch attitude. I like a breakfast buffet where there is no judgement when I pour my second glass of Champagne pre-11am. Jansz is just such a place. By night, it’s graced with candlelight and dishes such as beef tartare with quails egg and Dover Sole Meunière.

If you can drag yourself out of the hotel, head to nearby W Amsterdam for rooftop cocktails. A different vibe to Hotel Pulitzer, the Amsterdam outpost of this esteemed chain is the spot to be for pre-dinner, sunset drinks and a little boogie.

Also, if you’re craving a little extra relaxation, as the Hotel Pulitzer doesn’t have a spa, head to the Akasha spa within the Conservatorium hotel. Pure zen ensues upon entering, and if you’re travelling with a partner, I recommend the couple’s massage which is followed by Champagne and a platter of fresh fruits. Total bliss. affron is the 24-karat gold of the culinary world. It’s the jewel in the crown of spices and has been used for more than three centuries, valued for its rich earthy flavour and the distinctive golden hue it brings to dishes. Saffron comes from the stamens found within the mauve blossoms of the crocus bulb; wispy threads divided into the fragile saffron strands which must be painstakingly picked by hand from within the delicate blossom. Harvesting can only take place in early morning from October to mid-November and it takes some 75,000 blossoms to create a single pound of saffron.

Originally cultivated in or near Greece, it’s now generally grown in the sunny climes of La Mancha in Spain. However, in Delamere forest, a family company has put its passion and scientific expertise together to create the finest English saffron. Cheese is so versatile and it’s a great store cupboard basic, as well as being perfect on its own with a glass of wine. 1833 is my favourite as the Barber family have been making their cheddar in the west country for nearly 200 years and have a true passion for their product. I make sure the chicken burger sliders in the 1903 lounge are finished with a slice of 1833.

What is your favourite food?

To be honest, I have many favourites. I love Asian cuisine but I’m also very influenced by American-style dishes too. I enjoy the use of herbs and spices in Asian dishes and their combination of flavours when added to simple ingredients. But I also love American boldness, especially BBQ flavours and smoked meats and, of course, the fact that they also love cheese!

SPOTLIGHT ON... The Galloping Major at Oddfellows on the Park

T

he Galloping Major is the fine dining restaurant at the boutique hotel, Oddfellows on the Park, set within the grounds of Bruntwood Park, Cheadle. The restaurant’s namesake is James Edward Platt, who ran a private equestrian stud at Bruntwood in 1883. He was the second owner of the hall and it was under his ownership that it was extended to become the gothic mansion it is today.

James was a flamboyant chap, known as the ‘Galloping Major’, with a signature handlebar moustache, and often found astride a horse. The hotel itself is a luxury haven where grand Victoriana now sits comfortably aside design-led chic, impeccably restored with true respect for its original architecture.

As we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted warmly and shown to the restaurant, located in the former ballroom of the house. Under the stunning canopy of a fully restored ornate plasterwork ceiling, the room feels opulent and retains the original fireplace and door casings. A stylish interior design scheme ensures the room is bright and modern and, while not opting for a fully open-kitchen concept, the owners have nonetheless created an opening which allows diners a glimpse of the chef and his backstage antics.

Our charming and very knowledgeable maitre d’ talked us through the menu and an amuse bouche was presented: a fresh heritage tomato salad served with an intriguing ‘tomato cloud’. Head chef Ian Moss was already working his magic, and this seemingly simple dish was full of tricks. To begin, I chose the salad of baby beetroot with spring vegetables and a beautiful goats cheese curd. My plate was as pretty as a picture, with vibrant spring colours and precise plating. My dining companion opted for the crab ravioli with Wye Valley asparagus and a

grapefruit foam, which was delicate and seasonal with a zingy hit from the foam.

When it comes to mains, there’s a mouth-watering selection to choose from, although the suckling pig is already making a name for itself as a ‘signature dish’. We’d heard it spoken about by guests in the bar before we’d even entered the restaurant. Served with lobster, silky celeriac puree and broad beans, it’s a real treat of a dish. Roasted monk fish with curried salt, lentils and wild mushrooms was also beautifully presented and spiced, yet perfectly balanced so as not to overpower the flavour of the fish.

Last but by no means least, we moved on to our desserts. With delights such as frozen clotted-cream parfait with strawberry macaron and white chocolate panna cotta with a passion fruit curd, you can understand our excitement. We chose the lip smacking sugared donuts, filled with custard and served with rhubarb, and the salted caramel parfait, which was light and creamy with an intense caramel hit, served with a crunchy raspberry granola.

We finished with a selection of cheeses, including the smokey French Tomme de Savoie and a chunk of Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire, then loosened our belts.

Unlike the Galloping Major himself, Head chef Ian Moss, formerly of Northcote and trained by Marcus Wareing, is quietly spoken and unassuming, but his food is another matter. He uses simple, quality ingredients and then takes guests on a culinary ride.

His skill and creativity make him the ideal chef to be in the saddle, and this dining destination is set to be a major success. (oddfellowsonthepark.com)

Altrincham Altrincham has been undergoing a regeneration. It’s getting its bustle back. Penelope Warde chats to some of the local businesses to find out more

here's no doubt that this re-invention began with the vision of Altrincham market – I still meet people who rave about it and make it their new go-to weekend visit. Completed in 2014, the market and market house are putting the town on the map as a foodie destination. The 19th-century covered market offers quality butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers alongside art and crafts stalls, while the Grade II-listed market house next door provides some of the region's best artisan food and drink outlets with a

thriving retail channel, surrounding a 180-seat dining area, which is child and dog friendly as well as accessible.

It has breathed new life into what was a tiring market town. The success of the market house and market has led other independent businesses to open in the surrounding streets and thrive. I, for one, am loving having to use the word ‘independent’ so freely.

The boutique Sugo Pasta Kitchen is just one of these businesses. Run by Alex De Martiis, the idea was cooked up with partner Jonny Marcolgiese, as they were frustrated at the Anglicised Italian restaurants in the UK. With good, honest, South Italian cooking, pasta and oils are imported from Puglia, as is the earthenware; new partnerships have formed with Manchester Veg People and Reserve wines to create new dishes and experiences.

The Altrincham Conservative Working Men's Club adjacent to the market on Greenwood Street has also been transformed. David and Jo Vanderhook, who already own The George Charles in Didsbury and Lime bar in Salford Quays, have created a contemporary industrialist restaurant/bar, complete with

Named Federation, after the brewery that used to provide beers for Britain's working men's clubs, it’s capable of producing up to two brews a week offering customers “great tasting beer brewed especially for them”.

Having said that, it's not just the high quality independents that the re-energised town is attracting. National chains are also joining the resurgence. JD Sports has opened in the

Stamford Quarter as part of an ambitious expansion plan, as has the home of the stationery obsessed: Paperchase.

Then there's French restaurant group Bistrot Pierre, which has 16 bistrots across the country.

Co-owner Robert Beacham comments, "Altrincham is fast becoming known as a food destination since the historic indoor food market opened its doors again.

“The local economy has been struggling, but now greater investment into Altrincham has encouraged people to spend more time in the town, and we saw it as the ideal location for us to open our latest bistrot.

“There is a big independent scene in the town and, as an independently-owned group, we are passionate about maintaining that environment and experience throughout our bistrots.”

As we go to press, the town has just finished its first Food & Drink Fortnight, complete with Sri Lankan barbecues, healthy eating, a tapas trail, cookery classes and essential Bake Off, and is planning the return of Goose Green Summer Festival. The event forms part of the wider

Altrincham Soundbites festival throughout August, which promotes and celebrates Altrincham's music scene, attracting up-andcoming as well as established local names, not to mention over 4,000 visitors.

These events are put on by Altrincham Unlimited, Altrincham's Business Improvement District (BID) which was launched in April 2016 to improve the trading environment of the town centre. And it appears to be working – not just as you walk down the street, but in the pocket.

So far, a positive trend has seen visitor numbers to the town centre up 8.2 per cent on the previous year, despite many of the UK’s other high streets seeing a fall of 0.3 per cent, and the vacancy rate in Altrincham town centre dipping below 10 per cent for the first time since records began.

“Altrincham is definitely back!” says Hugh Pottle, manager of the prestigious David M Robinson Jewellers, which has been in the town since 1989. “Two things are happening: there’s more of a community feel and we are seeing more and more visitors coming into the town to enjoy the market and the restaurants. I think it makes a difference to your lunch or dinner when you can walk into town.”

David M Robinson as a business is a classic example of the new positivity. A stalwart of the Cheshire retail scene, the showroom attracts customers from all over the north west, but Hugh notes that Altrincham itself had the highest number of new VAT registrations for any town in 2016. “Altrincham people are resourceful and resilient,” he says. “And the re-birth of the town is driven by people with the town’s best interests at heart”.

The BID has also just launched Altrincham Hosts, which is modelled on the successful Knutsford Hosts scheme. It aims to bring together enthusiastic local people and match their skills, talents and interests to the needs of Altrincham organisers, community groups and charities.

This was due in no small part to the dedication and vision of Matt Colledge who, as leader of Trafford Council, championed the regeneration that has well and truly put Altrincham back on its feet. People now feel a real pride in their town, and the Altrincham Hosts project gives them a chance to get involved and make a contribution to its continued success."

Beyond the market house, other major projects include the replacement of the old hospital with a new development – including a health and wellbeing centre, pharmacy, tourist information centre and the relocated Altrincham Library – with completion scheduled for summer 2018.

The first phase of the £70m, 4.5-acre Altair project is underway, with the demolition of the former ATS centre on Oakfield Road and the launch, by developers Nikal, of a 59-apartment development with ground floor retail and roof garden, that should also be ready by spring 2019. Further phases will include 91 more apartments, 44,000 sq ft of leisure retail space, 20,000 sq ft of Grade-A office space, a 200-space basement car park and a new leisure centre.

Bold Flavour Housed in one of Altrincham’s most fascinating buildings, The Con Club has hit the Cheshire dining scene with an impressive splash. We meet general manager Adam Whitworth to find out what sets it apart

S

tanding in the heart of Altrincham since 1887, home to Altrincham Working Men’s Conservative Club for 120 years but lying unused after its closure, it was David Vanderhook – restauranteur, local resident and former private chef to such palates as King Hussein of Jordan and the Aga Khan – who finally came to the rescue of 48 Greenwood St in 2016.

He undertook a full restoration and, in November 2016, opened The Con Club: a thriving bar and restaurant, focusing on simple, highquality dining in a buzzing food-hall setting, renowned for fantastic sushi and fabulous local meat cooked on the charcoal grill, as well as a wide range of fine wines, cocktails, beers and even an on-site microbrewery, on show behind a glass wall. It’s already a hit, and it’s easy to see why.

“The original Working Men’s Conservative Club was established as a venue for staff of the gentlemen that were attending the Conservative Club, which is still going strong and located on the other side of the market square from The Con Club,” explains general manager Adam Whitworth. “It’s a really unique venue – from its location at the heart of the town and the beautiful, historic building we operate from, to the look and feel of the venue and the way it has been designed like a New York-style warehouse.

“Everything is cooked from fresh ingredients in an authentic manner, so the food we offer is a real fusion – we have a Japanese and Asian influence in our sushi menu, alongside some Asian flavours in our à la carte menu, plus a focus on grilled meats from local suppliers. We are very much a bar, too, and we have a buzzing evening drinking trade alongside the restaurant, which lends great atmosphere to the venue as a whole. We have an upstairs bar area in addition to the main bar downstairs, and we have DJs upstairs on Friday and Saturday evenings, then live music in the bar downstairs on Sundays.

“We have a really great team,” he adds. “The head chef Dax Gee, bar manager Conor Williams, assistant GM Suzi Gee and I have all worked for David previously – at Lime, Salford Quays and The George Charles, West Didsbury – so we have a great working relationship.”

The restaurant is soon set to open a terrace at the back of the building, and launched a new menu in mid-June which is already being met with much approval – so it seems Altrincham’s latest arrival is certainly one to watch. (conclubuk.com)

Summer is here at last, and with it the paddling pool is filled then unfilled as the British weather tests Anji’s patience. Luckily for me, summer started early this year as I spent six weeks lying on the beach in Marbella. I may have had the puparrazi on my tail, but it didn’t stop me hanging out at festivals and taking the concept of siesta to a whole new level. But don’t worry, even when soaking up the Spanish sun I was still on the hunt for the perfect place to be seen in Cheshire this summer – and I have found it.

Trying to keep your little ones entertained can be a full-time job, so you’ll be pleased to hear my paws have come across a real little treasure who goes by the name of Peanut.

He is super gentle, super furry and super funny – and he lives in his own little stable. Like me, he loves rolling in dirt, getting treats, having lots of walks and plenty of kisses. Have you guessed what he is yet? Peanut is a lemon and white American miniature horse – just 28 inches of trouble, but to Aston and me he is still huge.

He lives at Holly Tree Riding School, surrounded by the lovely Cheshire countryside in Lower Peover.

All the horses are happy and eager to say hello: some of them are very, very big, but there are also five miniature ponies – Sweetie, Panda, Simba, Dude and Bandit – who make up the mini pony parties where your children can meet them all.

Why not let your little ones enjoy a riding lesson, then head on over to the miniatures for a bit of grooming and pampering – they love being dressed up with bows and ribbons in their manes and tails, and each pony enjoys tonnes of fuss, cuddles and attention. It’s a perfect way for children to experience an up-close-and-personal approach to the care needed to look after these little ponies; and afterwards they can enjoy face painting, go crazy on the bouncy castle and indulge in home-made party food (including a stunning unicorn cake).

This magical experience in beautiful surroundings will leave your children with memories to last a lifetime – so here’s to a summer filled with love, laughter and adventure!

We took the harshest critics we could muster – a group of children from Guilden Sutton Primary School – to try out the all-new Freedome Trampoline Park in Ellesmere Port

O

ur evening at the park started out with a safety talk, followed by all the children receiving some rather fetching luminous yellow socks with grips on the bottom to help grip as you bounce. Needless to say, these went down a treat, and it was clear we were off to a promising start.

Our host Betty was on hand to watch over the kids as they bounced around on the many different trampolines across the various zones – with special mention going to the dodgeball section, which includes the world’s first padless trampoline court, specially designed for an intense game.

Meanwhile, the adults headed to the café upstairs to indulge in a fabulous array of freshly made cakes, refreshments and sandwiches, intermittently visited by thirsty children making trips to the all-important cold drinks station where cups are refilled and bouncers refuelled.

We chose the party package, which offers ten children an hour’s use of the park followed by food and drinks in the balloon-festooned party room upstairs, where we enjoyed a mix of hot dogs, burgers and nachos served with Slush Puppies with glow in the dark straws (which, again, went down very well with our miniature critics), followed by ice-cream for dessert. At this point, all their shoes were also brought upstairs and lined up against the wall – a nice touch.

All the children loved their time at Freedome and so, too, did the parents – mainly thanks to the hours of bouncing which rendered their little ones fit for an early bedtime. The party package is such good value and a fabulous idea for a birthday party or as an after-school treat. But don’t take our word for it – let’s hear from the real reviewers.

Great Lengths Satellites Swimming Club member Reece Grady smashed an extraordinary eight Satellites records in the ASA North West Region Summer Championships, held at the Manchester Aquatic Centre. The talented King’s School 12-year-old won the individual 400m individual medley, five silver medals and four bronze medals in a competition which featured the leading swimmers from the region’s top one hundred clubs.

Reece, who is now coached by Ric Howard and Craig Yates at Satellites, first learnt to swim under the expert eye of his mum, Sarah, a former top flight swimmer in the USA. His performances at the event were stunning and included his gold win in the 400m IM, with an impressive time of five minutes 29 seconds, two minutes 30 seconds in the 200m IM, and he completed the 50m fly in a time of 31.20 seconds. Designs On A Win Five savvy students from Abbey College in Manchester have spent the last six months designing a brand-new leisure centre as part of a national engineering project. They worked alongside a team Left to Right: Will from ARUP Manchester to solve a McConchie, Sandy Deng, real-life engineering problem and Jehaad Khalid, creating a detailed proposal for a splash Mekhdi Alier pool at the leisure centre.

This Engineering Education Scheme, set up by the Engineering Development Trust, pits students against the engineering problems put forward by real companies. It is designed to give the students real experience of a career in engineering and the process of working through a project. he aim of Lifetime ISAs is so that people do not have to choose between saving for their first home and retirement – they can use some or all of the money to buy their first home or keep it until they’re 60.

Individuals can save and invest up to £4,000 each year, and receive a government bonus of 25 per cent – that’s a bonus of up to £1,000 a year.

In fact, any savings put in a Lifetime ISA before a person’s 50th birthday will receive an added 25 per cent bonus from the government.

There is no maximum monthly contribution – someone can save as little or as much as they want each month, up to £4,000 a year, with the total amount they can save each year into all Individual Savings Accounts being £20,000.

After their 60th birthday, they can take out all the savings tax-efficiently. If they withdraw the money before they turn 60, they will lose the government bonus (and any interest or growth on this). They will also have to pay a 5 per cent charge.

Any time from 12 months after opening a Lifetime ISA, the policy holder will be able to use their savings and a bonus from one of the accounts towards a deposit on their first home worth up to £450,000 in the UK.

Elections and property value – it’s not what you think!

ecent history has demonstrated that the political uncertainty surrounding general elections has only a momentary effect on property prices. It’s very much business as usual shortly after any election or referendum.

The press would have you believe that it’s a terrible picture for homeowners after a general election but, whilst there is historically a dip in the month after an election, homeowners and their property values have nothing to fear after an election.

What’s more influential on property value is the introduction of new taxation rules. Tax trumps change when it comes to value.

Pre-2017, our most recent general elections took place in 2010 and 2015, and data from Which? shows that the political uncertainty that often surrounds elections has had little bearing on property value. Values took a slight hit in the run up to and immediately after both elections, but by the end of June were again stable.

Property prices have remained firm during times of political change or uncertainty. In 2015, average property prices rose steadily each month in comparison to the previous year and the year after. As for the recent snap election, the fact that it was called only seven weeks beforehand means that there was little time for wavering from either purchasers or vendors.

Taxation changes have a more adverse effect on market confidence than political uncertainty: for example the recent stamp duty for buy-to-let landlords.

Speak to your estate agent for up-to-date advice on the property market, and remember that political uncertainty has little bearing on the value of your home.

1. Something fabulously creative you made as a child.

When I was at school in Guernsey I won top prize for a creative writing competition. I was about eight, I think, and it was wonderful because I was rubbish at maths and I thought PE was a form of cruelty.

2. Your proudest moment in your career to date.

That has to be being asked to craft the recently launched Jeremy J Lewis guitar.

It’s the most exclusive and expensive production guitar in the world and is cutting-edge technology and art combined. The tone and sound is second to none. It is carved from one piece of Honduras mahogany with no neck joint, a carbon fibre chassis, titanium bridge and exquisite veneers inlaid with silver.

I’m so proud of everything we’ve done, but this just tops it all.

local, Pollards Inn, and have supper in the garden there, which is the prettiest garden in South Wirral. We would move on to the other village pub, The Nags, and all the locals would be there for a giggle. The local singer, who also happens to be the village barber, would sing and entertain us all and we would dance until midnight, then totter home.

7. Three items you always take along when you travel.

My husband, mascara, mobile phone.

Not necessarily in that order. you could wish to meet. I thought: he’s working non-stop crafting all this beautiful furniture with sawdust in his hair and a pencil behind his ear. I had better stop going out for lunch and go and help him with the business.

6. Your idea of a perfect day off.

Well, the sun would be shining and the skies would be blue with a light breeze.

Husband would bring me breakfast in bed, poached egg on a toasted muffin with coffee and cream. We would take our dog Stanley for a walk in the meadow then go to North Wales for the day in my little MX5 with the roof down, enjoying the beauty of rural Wales (there would be little or no other traffic on the country lanes). We would stop at Conwy for a late lunch and meander home. With our children and their partners we would go to our

Getting to see the end result. Tree trunks get delivered to our workshop and lots of drawing and making and crafting and finishing and shouting later, the end result is always perfection.

9. The signature dish you would cook for friends.

I make a nice curry with all fresh ingredients and lots of chillies. It’s probably a little hot for some! I also make a lovely roast for the family with the biggest, fattest Yorkshire puddings and lots of gravy.

10. The best piece of advice you’ve ever been given, and the personal motto you live by.

I am very bad at listening to advice and reluctant to give it, but I would say: live in the present, work hard, strive for excellence, keep calm and carry on.

Breaking the Rules Caroline Gardner guides us through the floral trends of 2017, and gives a crash course on rewriting the rulebook

lowers lift spirits, communicating the frivolity or importance of an occasion, and present at all the main events in our lives. Fashion trends are influenced by political, economic, social and technological factors, and floral art is no exception to this rule.

The colour, pattern and texture aspects of the 2017 flower trends have drastically changed from previous years: colours are more complex, composed of multiple layers reflecting the complexity of our lives.

Homes (and work spaces) have always been sanctuaries of personalities and showcase our desires to demonstrate the extent of our status, brand, culture and travels. We increasingly adorn our homes with an eclectic mix of artefacts reflecting our experiences and successes. However, in 2017, style trends also reflect the desire to instil a sense of simple tranquillity and fun when life is increasingly chaotic and sometimes illogical. So it’s no coincidence that The Pantone Institute has nominated a refreshing and revitalising shade of yellow-green, ‘Greenery’, as its colour of 2017.

Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings: a fresh New Year; healthier food resolutions and

growing vegetarian trends; grass and the outdoors during spring and summer. Greenery can be paired with neutrals, brights, deeper shades, pastels and metallics to create fashionable colour combinations.

Five key trends for floral arrangements this year

#1. Harmonise Natural, round shapes and patterns typify this trend. Green is at the heart of the colour palette, alongside calm colours such as pale yellow and pink and lilac accents.

Don’t be afraid to add a little metallic flair to the arrangement.

#2. Big is Beautiful Wispy blooms in a row of small vases or large single head flowers for example Hydrangeas, Peonies, Dahlias. Dahlias can be so versatile.

Simple table arrangements featuring budget-friendly smaller flowers and foliage are popular for wedding events. This combination looks fresh and elegant arranged in glass vases, or styled as a runner with candles.

lower etiquette has also changed dramatically for 2017 and this year you are permitted to break all the rules!

Carnations and Chrysanthemums do not need to be the boring orange or pink varieties we used to associate with grandmas! Grandmas are far too cool these days to go for anything so dull.

New varieties such as Anastasia Star Pink chrysanthemums and Funza Green carnations are simply stunning and create a contemporary feel in any house. As for arranging flowers as per all the traditional rules and ‘allowing space for the butterflies to move between each flower head’ – so last year darling! Either a single bloom that stands alone in a large, quirky ceramic vase, or a very loose rustic arrangement of wild flowers with plenty of greenery, demonstrates a much needed rebellion.

In fact, if you decide to abandon colour altogether and go for an all-green foliage arrangement, you will be right on-trend, so don’t be intimidated by all the variety of flowers on offer at your local florist.

Dare to be different, go with what you like – clash colours, harmonise colours or don’t use colour at all – the choice is yours, so enjoy the rebellion, for 2017 at least!

Ellen Millard discovers the green-fingered mavericks who sowed the seeds of the world’s botanical masterpieces

ondly known as the Red City in homage to its terracotta walls, Marrakesh is, in fact, a metropolis of myriad colours, where riads are peppered with mosaic tiles and market stalls piled high with rainbow displays of spices, crockery and lanterns. But the biggest colour wheel of them all lies in the Jardin Majorelle, a garden of hypnotic hues first built in the 1920s by French artist Jacques Majorelle.

It took the painter 40 years to perfect his most complex masterpiece; during this time he planted more than 300 species of plants, decorating the space with greenery from five continents and dyeing the walls in mesmerising shades of blue and yellow. It was opened to the public in 1947 and, following Majorelle’s death, was acquired by Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé, who sought to preserve the artist’s vision.

Now, the space is as much associated with the late fashion designer as it is with its original creator, so much so that the urn in which Saint Laurent’s ashes were kept is on display in the

garden and the ashes themselves were scattered there.

But while Majorelle was the original mastermind behind the botanical beauty and Saint Laurent its saviour, the garden as we know it today was crafted by the nimble green fingers of another creative. In 1998, the fashion designer commissioned Abderrazak Benchaâbane to restore the space to its former glory, providing the Latin names for each of the plants and adding a further 25 species to the mix in a process that took a decade to complete.

“I realised that it was not a catalogue of plants that the garden needed, but a real restoration or even a rescue and a resurrection,” Benchaâbane tells me. “At that time, the garden was declining and suffering from a great lack of maintenance and organisation. I obtained carte blanche and the adventure lasted 10 years.”

A childhood spent exploring the public gardens of Marrakesh stood Benchaâbane in good stead when he embarked on a career refining the

great outdoors. He grew up watching his father working in the fields and his mother cultivating their patio garden, occasionally helping by weeding or picking fruit and vegetables, and when he went to university, he spent his spare time working in the institute’s botanical garden.

His time at the Jardin Majorelle led him to develop a career in perfumery, spurred on by Saint Laurent, who commissioned him to create a fragrance for the garden’s gift shop.

Naturally, he speaks fondly of the designer. “After the garden was closed to the public, he would pass long hours walking and meditating in his garden, listening to the songs of the birds, which returned every night to

sleep on the branches of the trees,” the ethnobotanist recalls. “His taste and sense of colour have profoundly marked the aesthetics of the garden, without ever altering the design of its creator, Jacques Majorelle.”

It’s no secret that design and botany have long gone hand in hand, and the significance of the world's urban landscapes nurturing the environment is not lost on Andrew Grant, director and founder of landscape architecture firm Grant Associates, and the mastermind behind Singapore’s striking Gardens by the Bay project.

“In the context of climate change, mass urbanisation, biodiversity loss and depletion of resources, including

food and water, we see it as our duty and opportunity to promote more landscape-led projects, such as Gardens by the Bay, across the world,” he tells me.

Those who haven’t heard of Gardens by the Bay will no doubt recognise it by the lofty Supertrees that tower over the park, the highest sitting tall at 50 metres. These vertical gardens mimic photosynthesis through solar energy and collect rainwater for irrigation, acting as a tool for the rest of the garden. The space is split into three – Bay Central, Bay East and Bay South – and then divided into a children’s garden, a flower dome, a horticultural garden and a cloud forest.

“We thoroughly researched the cultural agenda and history of Singapore before coming up with the orchid as the key reference point. It is a cosmopolitan species, but is also the national flower and resonates deeply with Singaporeans,” Grant explains of the inspiration behind the design.

As Singapore champions the orchid, other cities from around the world fly the flag for their nation’s favoured bloom, too. The Keukenhof gardens in the Netherlands, for instance, is famed for its annual rainbow display of tulips, first devised by landscape architect Jan David Zocher, who was commissioned by the garden's owners to show off the nation’s extensive collection of flowers. Now, it is famous for the 800 different species of tulips which it grows, and visitors flock to see the colourful exhibit each year.

For Benchaâbane, orange blossom reigns as the floral champion –

unsurprising, given that it lines the gardens and streets of Marrakesh.

“There is all the sunshine in the scent of the orange blossom,” he says. “Its nectar has a tonic: soothing, sweet and an intoxicating wake.”

No longer working at the Jardin Majorelle, Benchaâbane instead dedicates his time to the Musée de la Palmeraie, home to calligraphy and artwork chosen by the gardener himself and, of course, a collection of themed gardens that house spectacular displays of roses, aquatic plants and cactus. A lifetime under Morocco’s intense sun has clearly served the 58-year-old well and, when he speaks of his craft, it’s clear that retirement won’t be on the cards any time soon.

“The botanist is in dialogue with plants and nature,” he says. “Every day he tries to break through the secret life of plants and marvel at nature and creation. The greatest gift that gardens and plants offer is their ability to push us to wonder.”

PIECES WITH PURPOSE If you like furniture that is both beautiful and practical (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), you’ll love the gorgeous pieces created by interior design company Pinda Furniture. Based in Durban, South Africa, and founded by Siyanda Mbele in 2012, the company is dedicated to merging traditional African and modern design aesthetics to create unique products. Our favourite piece so far is the oak-finished Mvelo Desk, the concept of which is derived from the way that many people are married to their careers and the amount of time and days they spend using a desk.

“I then made an analogy using the Zulu symbols and Zulu chevrons,” explains Mbele. “The form of the desk represents both masculine (triangle) and feminine (diamond). What interested me the most in the Zulu symbols is that when two symbols are joined together, whether triangle or diamond, they represent a union.
