hristmas is just around the corner and if you haven’t already started on the gift list or planning the dinner, this is the perfect issue for you. And if you’re not in the festive spirit yet, then we’ve still plenty to entertain you. Our Little Book of Christmas Gifts (p.37) takes centre stage to help you find the perfect gift for your friends and family. It has also helped us with our list for Santa, let’s hope we’re on the nice list! We ask if you’re going to go for a contemporary or traditional style in our Homes & Interiors section and look at this year’s trends to inspire us. Pantomime’s favourite wicked queen, Priscilla Presley, gives us an exclusive interview as she heads to Manchester for some good old-fashioned banter. She speaks candidly to Natalie Anglesey about life, love and marrying the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll (p.26). Chester artist, Nick Munro talks about creativity and determination in design (p.60) and Barbara Hulanicki, OBE, chats to Kari Rosenberg about how she shaped women’s fashion in the swinging 60s (p.86). Richard Yarrow puts his favourite car, the Bentley Continental GT V8 S through its paces (p.96), and in the Technology pages (p.104), we compare the PS4 to the Xbox One in the hope that we can shed some light over which way to be swayed if it’s on your kid’s list (big kids also allowed). There’s lots, lots more in our regular pages too so please enjoy the read, and happy planning for the festive season. Cheers!

love Cheshire! It’s an amazing place to live and work. It’s where my friends and family are; and will always be home to me.’ Mark grew up in Cheshire, attending Hulme Hall School and then Milfield in Somerset. He now lives in Alderley Edge with his wife and three boys. ‘There’s nothing better than the traditions of Sunday lunch at The Alderley Edge Hotel.’ He joined his father, Stephen Boler, in business, aged just 22 when he took over the reins at The Mere, successfully repositioning the Country Club as a deluxe resort and spa. ‘It was a steep learning curve. I had never been in hospitality before [Mark worked at Great Universal and White Arrow as a management trainee prior to this opportunity] but I knew I was good with people. ‘The key for successful businesses is to listen to what people say; the team as well as the clients. I learned that very early on. Solving someone’s problem or issue, however small it may be , can have the most positive effects. I have to admit I may not be the very best listener in this day and age when life is busy, but I do try and it does work. ‘It is true that people are at the heart of business and acknowledging that you can’t do everything is important. Employing people who are better at things than you are allows you to focus your strengths and gives you the freedom to develop the business quicker and more effectively.’ Today, The Mere Golf Resort & Spa employs 250 people, has recently completed a £15 million redevelopment and attracts a number of high-profile members and customers, including a number of PGA players who practise here before The Open. ‘I learned so much from my father. He was hands on in his businesses and always managed to get the most out of people in the best possible way. During my summer holidays he told me I had to chop ten tonnes of logs for winter and couldn’t go on holiday until I finished. ‘The first year it took me eight weeks and I didn’t get a holiday but every year I learned to work better and more efficiently and finally I did it in two weeks.’ Hard work and business acumen is not the only thing Mark inherited from his dad; ‘City is my team. Dad was a heavy supporter [and shareholder] so I grew up light blue. It’s an amazing legacy that the Club is creating in East Manchester.’ Back in Cheshire Mark works with Marketing Cheshire as an Ambassador for the county. ‘The foodie and tourism business is thriving here. There are lots of good people, with great ideas. That, combined with excellent transport connections, makes it perfect for the national and international business platform.’ We look forward to hearing more on how Mark is looking to make the most of this... watch this space. 150 years of history Wilmslow and Savile Row tailors, Phillip Alexander has been creating suits for dignitaries, celebrities and other VIPs throughout since 1864. This year the company is celebrating 150 years of handmade garments. With managing director John Homoky, aged 66 at the helm (who sewed on his first button at the age of six) the company uses a team of tailors to create the perfect suit and offers over 6,000 fabrics. What’s more the team also offers advice on the etiquette. Did you know that a correctly cut jacket or suit should be designed for the bottom button not to be fastened? And for three-button jackets the middle button should always be buttoned? Which just goes to show it’s in how you wear it as much as the quality of the suit. A bespoke suit costs from £1,270. David Bailey CBE is one of the most successful photographers of his generation; he’s captured the spirit of some of the most illustrious characters such as Salvador Dalí, Jack Nicholson and The Beatles, but he’s also encapsulated the disposition of normal, everyday people he passes on the street. The photographer, who was born and grew up in east London, brings us a new collection of three books entitled Bailey’s East End, in which he presents 620 photographs taken from the 1960s, to the present day. The triptych represents the changing face of the East End, which is an on-going conversation in today’s society, and his photographs illustrate the contrast between decades. The idea for the book came to him during the 1980s following the closure of the London Docks, when he was shooting in the districts of Silvertown and Canning Town, and this period is captured in one of the volumes. Accompanied by text from an interview by writer Monte Packham about Bailey’s childhood, it also gives a real insight into his life. It’s a must-read for any photography or history lover. Serena
S
erena has all of the period drama trappings that have come to be expected from a film set in an unsettled world. The storyline focuses on George and Serena Pemberton, the newly married couple whose happiness is so sky-high it only seems inevitable that it will, at some point, come to a sorrowful end. The foundations for this downfall are present from the beginning; George, a character played sensationally by Bradley Cooper, is bribing a senator to keep his timber business open, while trying to keep under wraps a dirty secret bound to come out and shake the foundations on which his relationship is built. Serena shakes things up from the start,
the embodiment of the ball-breaking business woman. Despite her steely façade, Serena’s insecurities are soon revealed with Jennifer-Lawrence-style subtlety. What ensues is an endless pursuit of happiness, as the characters are driven to great lengths to try and achieve their dreams. The plot moves quickly from love to despair, the audience’s reaction towards Serena wavers between pity and repulsion, and the uncomfortable tension never ceases. Mixed in with the powerful imagery of the vast, lonely landscape of North Carolina, Serena is a comprehensive documentation of passion and desperation. Serena is in cinemas now

THE PERFECT MARTINI
HIDDEN GEM… Ordsall Hall
O
rdsall Hall is Salford’s Grade 1 listed Tudor manor house, which has been home to medieval gentry, Tudor nobility, Catholics loyal to the Crown, butchers, farmers, an Earl, priests, scout troops, mill workers, cows and several ghosts. It has recently undergone a pain-staking two-year £6.5 million restoration making it one of the earliest and most impressive timber-
framed halls built in the region. Today, it is home to weddings, events, exhibitions and activities for school visits and individuals. The Hall itself offers over 800 years of local history in the making but for the brave there is also the chance to join a ghost investigation group as they hunt for the paranormal and the mysterious White Lady. his year’s Good Food Guide confirmed Simon Radley’s restaurant at The Chester Grosvenor as one of the top 50 restaurants in the country. Released each year, the Guide not only combines the opinions of ex-restaurateurs and chefs but also takes into consideration diner feedback. ‘It is a real testament to the continued creativity of my team in the kitchen and the quality of our regional farmers and producers,’ said Chef Simon Radley. ‘They had ten new entries this year so as one of the more established restaurants it’s wonderful that our customers continue to take the time to review and support us.’ ‘Simon Radley at The Chester Grosvenor’ received a cooking score of 6/10 which according to inspectors is indicative of: “Exemplary cooking skills, innovative ideas, impeccable ingredients and an element of excitement.” The restaurant has held a Michelin star since 1990, putting it in the company of only four other English restaurants to consistently hold a star for such a long period of time. Carluccio’s
he latest edition to the Carluccio’s empire opened in Hale last month, much to the pleasure of those who live locally. A firm favourite already, having tasted the breakfasts (great for lazy Sundays with the papers) and numerous coffees we visited in the evening to see if the warm atmosphere and standards extend to the later hours. We were warmly greeted by Aga, the manager, and shown to our table and taken through the specials. A bread basket later we had made our decisions and, helped by the house red, relaxed into the evening. Wanting to sample as much as possible we shared the Deluxe Antipasti (£18.95) and deliberated over our favourite element; prosciutto-wrapped prawns, pâté, ham, roasted courgettes, pepper and bread. This would be perfect for a long lazy lunch with prosecco and, appetite dependent, may be a little too much for a starter. Delicious nonetheless. To follow (we requested a short break!) we dined on Zuppa di Pesce piled high with pollock, mussels, spicy sausage and bread to mop up the juices (£13.95). The perfect hearty meal on a rainy evening. The Tortelloni Di Cervo (£9.35) was again a good choice to suit the weather, handmade pasta filled with rich wine-braised venison. To finish we shared Affogato, combining our coffee fix with the house gelato (£4.60). Our verdict; perfect casual dining with a great atmosphere. Party Trends
As the year draws to a close, Liz Taylor reflects on the year’s trends and shares some tips for creating your own festive yet fun get togethers
E
vents have come a long way since the Marilyn-Monroe-overthe-top-Hollywood themes. Today, people want more elegance and refinement, a little more subtlety. It has reflected the economic times (it hasn’t been the done thing to splash the cash), but also the style and interiors trends that have been coming to the fore. We’ve gone from bling gold to antique gold. Fabrics and textures are huge. And it’s about a few statement pieces mixed with good-quality complementary pieces. For example, when you’re looking at tableware, invest in some fabulous coloured wine glasses to add colour and fun. For us, the year has been about creativity and innovation. Once we’ve really got into our clients head and understand what they want to achieve it’s about the challenge of thinking outside of the box. If you’re going to do it, do it well and with gusto. Think of the maddest thing and make it happen! I recently undertook an event where we created a bespoke working carousel bar. This was the ‘wow’ the client wanted but everything else was kept elegant and simple. On the other side of the equation, we’ve made the tables the talking point; beautiful wooden washed long tables with subtle settings look very chic. Room decorations have gone from towering creations of feathers to old gramophones and vintage signs – all under the heading of sophisticated retro. On the topic of music, invest in a jukebox if you’re not sure what music to play or entertainment to provide. That way your guests can create the playlist. If you’re still looking ideas for your Christmas party don’t be restrained. Do something fun. Add a tailored photo booth to create memories. And definitely create your own cocktails, all it takes is a little alcohol and a lot of imagination. Sparkling wine is a great base for the festive season but nothing beats a bit of creative thinking Take our circus-themed event, we had glasses which looked like goldfish bags you’d win at the fair, complete with goldfish ice! Go a bit retro with your food too; retro sweeties are huge as table gifts and for something a little more substantial try bangers ‘n’ mash or cones of chips or warm popcorn. Perfect for the colder months. Taylor Lynn Corporation (TLC); 0161 876 6266; tlc-ltd.co.uk

The Fairy Tale
Queen The undisputed panto queen, Priscilla Presley talks candidly to Natalie Anglesey about Elvis, the importance of family and making your own mistakes
elvis & priscilla presley on their wedding day at the aladdin, las vegas
‘I
f I’d known what was involved I would never have agreed to do pantomime,’ laughs legendary beauty Priscilla Presley. ‘But I’m so glad I did because I love it!’ As we laughed our way through the rest of the interview, the charming star of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Christmas pantomime at the Manchester Opera House, admits she was completely ignorant about this peculiarly British tradition. ‘Kevin Wood [from First Family Entertainment] told me pantomime was the first opportunity for young children to visit the theatre and that was the main attraction as I’ve two grandchildren of my own,’ Priscilla chuckles. ‘I’d also be able to talk to the audience which was also appealing. I just thought it would be a great learning experience – boy was that true! But my mouth dropped open when I saw how large the theatre was and I became so nervous I didn’t eat for two weeks! Although I felt much better when I saw my gorgeous costumes made out of Swarovski crystals!’ Priscilla made her panto debut in 2012 in the New Wimbledon Theatre with Warwick Davis. ‘I’m delighted Warwick’s joining me on stage in Manchester as he was so professional to work with and we had such fun,’ she giggles. ‘He warned me that if I was any good as the Wicked Queen I’d be booed. When I was - I felt I’d earned it - I wasn’t prepared for what happened next!

‘When I was alone on stage with the huntsman I was determined to throw in some ad-libs. I was really proud of myself until I realised I couldn’t remember the next line and looked at him for help. He just smiled so I turned to the audience and cried – help me – but they thought it was part of the act and booed even more! However, it gave me time to remember my lines. It’s still every actor’s nightmare!’ This successful actress and businesswoman was born in New York in 1945, to a military family who moved to Germany when she was a teenager. She first came to public attention when she married Elvis Presley, who was internationally acknowledged as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. They’d first met on September 13, 1959 during a party at his house in Germany while he was serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Despite Priscilla only being 14 years old, Elvis stayed in touch with her and eight years later they married on May 1, 1967 at the Aladdin Hotel in the show town of Las Vegas. ‘Life was an absolute whirlwind from the time I first met Elvis in Germany,’ Priscilla reminisces fondly. Their only child was born exactly nine months after their wedding, on February 1, 1968. ‘Elvis was a doting father to Lisa Marie,’ Priscilla remembers. Although they divorced in 1973, they left the courtroom hand in hand and he had complete access until his death in 1977. ‘Lisa Marie was once asked on national television how she felt when we split up and she replied that she didn’t even know we were divorced until her father died. I thought that was a lovely tribute to

both of us for the way she was brought up with our joint love.’ When Elvis died unexpectedly, his popularity made private grief hard to bear for his family. ‘The shock was incredible and the funeral was very difficult because there was a huge outpouring of national grief,’ Priscilla explains. ‘While I understood why there were cameras and fans everywhere, I just wanted to spend some quiet time comforting our daughter who was only eleven at the time.’ Elvis’s father Vernon served as executor of the estate, choosing Priscilla as executor for Lisa Marie. Graceland costs $500,000 a year to run and, facing the possibility of having to sell the family home, Priscilla hired Jack Soden, a Missouri investment counsellor, to turn it into a tourist attraction. Four weeks after it opened to the public in 1982, the estate made back all the money invested. ‘I’m a good judge of character and I just knew he was the right man for the job.’ Priscilla explains. ‘I’m still very much involved with the Graceland Foundation. Elvis loved his home and I was determined I’d do everything to keep it for the family and the fans.’ With her striking good looks, Priscilla started receiving television offers and made her television debut co-hosting Those Amazing Animals in 1980 and found work therapeutic. ‘I’ve always loved animals so this was the perfect project for me.’ In 1983, she got her first chance to act in The Fall Guy with Lee Majors. The following year she won a Soap Opera Digest Award for her role in Dallas. ‘Dallas was a huge hit at the time and I was thrilled to play Jenna Wade Krebbs. It was such a happy time I stayed for five years. I still keep in touch with Lynda Gray and did so with Larry Hagman until his sad death. Going back? Well, they always say, never say never, so who knows!’ 1985 saw Priscilla publish her best-selling memoir, Elvis and Me, and she produced the TV movie based on her book. She also announced her hope of a musical theatre production, Elvis and Priscilla, based on her romance with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. ‘Would you believe it after all this time? It now looks like it may happen as

we have a production team in place and casting is next – so it’s all very exciting!’ A lifetime in the public eye means Priscilla guards her private life carefully. A long-term relationship with Italian screenwriter Marco Garibaldi produced a son, Navaronne, born in 1987. Her sense of humour comes to the fore again as she jokes. ‘Remember the movie The Guns of Navaronne? We named him after that and now he’s a musician with his first album due - guess what he’s named his band? Them Guns!’ Looking good has always been a priority for Priscilla and in the past she’s owned a successful boutique boasting many celebrity clients. She developed a line of fragrances, a clothing line and skin-care products. ‘I love fashion and designing but after three years it was just taking up too much time in my life so I had to close it down,’ she sighs. However in 2008, Priscilla was back in the spotlight when she became a contestant in Dancing with the Stars. ‘I was a huge fan of the show which had an audience of 27 million. I always keep myself reasonably fit but I reckon I must be a glutton for punishment or that I really enjoy a challenge – just like the pantomime.’ Three of her greatest fans came to see Priscilla’s performance in Wimbledon – her daughter, Lisa Marie Presley who brought her children, Danielle and Benjamin. ‘The children were only three and call me Nona. They came
to see me four times but didn’t like me being booed until I explained I was a Wicked Witch and then they joined in with relish! Although they still wanted me to marry the Prince! ‘My daughter‘s still busy with her music but she’s a bit of a gypsy. She loves London and has a house in the country. So I see her and the children when I’m here and of course when she’s in America. She’s promised to bring the children to Manchester to see me – so that’ll be fun. They’re five years old now so hopefully they’ll be able to understand the story better. Becoming serious for a brief moment, Priscilla reflects. ‘Like me they will have to live with the legacy of the Presley name which has been both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that it brought us so much being loved by Elvis and his fans. But there have also been some dark times with the divorce and his death. I’ve tried to pass on my advice to my children but everyone has to learn by their own mistakes.’ Meantime, on a more positive note, Priscilla is looking forward to discovering Manchester and meeting her fans. ‘I’d just like to say to the children who are coming to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs that although I look like a mean Queen – I don’t really mean to scare them – and there is a happy ending!’ Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Manchester Opera House 5 December to 4 January, 2015 (0844 971 3018; atgtickets.com/manchester)

he Nag’s Head at Haughton Moss already has the reputation as being one of the best destinations for Sunday lunch despite having only opened this summer. Quite an achievement but it was a long time in the making for Ribble Valley Inns’ co-owner Nigel Haworth. ‘Cheshire is a fertile area so it fits perfectly with our ethos of locally sourced produce. It has taken a lot of car miles and adventures to find the people we now work with and build the relationships but it’s always worth it. ‘I would speak to people who would recommend this place or that and jump in the car. I always encourage my chefs to get out and see what’s about – you never know what you will find. ‘In the last twelve months we’ve sought out the established and the interesting. Like The Cheshire Smokehouse; I’d heard great things
‘Cheshire is a fertile area so it fits perfectly with our ethos of locally sourced produce’ about it and was really impressed with the bacon and smoked goods. ‘Then there’s Clare Burt of Burt’s Blue Cheeses, who we met at The Cheshire Show. And Mr Bourne – he’s a real character with great cheese and his own unique style. We work with Haughton Honey a lot too. I think the one thing I am looking for is a local dairy to provide pure whole milk, so if anyone has any contacts, let me know!’ All of the local suppliers are featured in the décor of the pub, a gentle yet constant reminder of the people behind the great produce. ‘We’ll keep going and dig up some more great finds. Tom, our head chef at The Nag’s (also called Trevor due to the fact that there were once too many Toms in a kitchen) is a great forager and a key thing for me to do is not dictate but empower the team to get out there, make the menus and keep things on which we then adopt.
33
‘If you can source great, local produce, cook it simply and give it the care and attention it needs then you’ve got a great meal in front of you, and that’s always our aim. You can pop in for a pint and a scotch egg or a three-course meal and, hopefully, feel just as comfortable doing either. ‘The season’s bring what the seasons will bring. At the moment we’re deep in pumpkin season and we’ve a great dish of Ginger’s ice-cream with pumpkin seed oil. You must try it.’ But what of the difference between Lancashire and Cheshire in the taste department? ‘Lancashire’s more your two-course lunch or dinner. Cheshire, on the other hand, can be a bit more discerning, more three-course meals. And they love their seafood, so we’ve more crab specials and scallops on the menu and lobster from the East Coast, when it’s in season.’ With one pub firmly established as a destination in Cheshire, the company is not resting on its laurels. The Stag’s Head, just outside Alderley Edge, is now under the Ribble Valley Inns umbrella with an exciting opening planned in the spring of next year. ‘Before that we’ve got Christmas to celebrate! We’ve got some great Cheshire game and venison on the menu and all sorts of other Cheshire goodies. ‘I love Christmas, it’s a really important time for the family. We open at Northcote for Christmas so once I’ve been in to chat with the team and guests and service is under way I go home and we have our dinner. Last year we had Beef Wellington so we might try that again this year. Then it’s turkey on Boxing Day after the football (Blackburn (Nigel’s team) face Bolton at home), and it’s much more casual affair with some roasties or just in sandwiches. Then it’s back to work and we’re back again before we know it.’ How true but next year will see a new launch and, I have no doubt, many new dishes and produce being discovered. A love letter to
stockport
Stockport playwright, Simon Stephens speaks with Natalie Anglesey about his latest adaptation, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and giving up a ‘proper job’

T
he last time I spoke to multi-awardwinning playwright, Simon Stephens from Stockport, he was throwing clothes into suitcases while cooking lunch for his three children prior to a family holiday in France. The hands-on dad has now returned, refreshed and relaxed before jetting off to New York to see his latest production on Broadway. ‘For a lad from Stockport, Broadway is obviously very exciting as it has a real buzz, but I’ve never written a play for the glitz and glamour – only to make them come alive,’ Simon explains. ‘I’ve written four plays based around questions about leaving or arriving in Stockport. It’s me and my mum’s hometown – it’s part of my DNA.’ The down-to-earth dramatist reminisces about his early inspirations. ‘I saw two productions which made me want to write for the theatre. One was Michael Crawford in Barnum, which was magic, and the other was Macbeth at the Royal Exchange with David Threlfall. ‘As a schoolboy passenger, I would travel on the 197 bus that stopped outside the Exchange and used to look longingly at the stage door. You can imagine how thrilled I was to walk in as a playwright to the theatre that has staged so many of my plays!’ Simon’s previous plays include Port, originally produced at the Exchange in 2002. It’s been described as a love letter to Stockport, and

received its London premiere at The National Theatre directed by Marianne Elliott. On the Shore of the Wide World, in 2005, was directed by the Royal Exchange’s Artistic Director, Sarah Frankcom, in a co-production which won an Olivier for Best New Play. This year she also directed the world premiere of Blindsided, starring Julie Hesmondhalgh, set in a battered part of Stockport at the end of the seventies. It’s the fourth play Simon‘s written for the Exchange. Simon’s play on Broadway, which can also be seen at The Lowry this Christmas, is The National Theatre production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Based on Mark Haddon’s award-winning novel, Simon adapted it for the stage and describes it as a labour of love. ‘Mark’s an illustrator and award-winning screenwriter with 15 children’s books to his credit. We discovered we were kindred spirits while on attachment at The National. His original novel won 17 international literary awards and has been translated into 44 languages. I read as soon as it came out and loved it. ‘When he asked me to adapt it for the stage, I agreed as long as I didn’t take a commission. I wanted the experience because I knew it would be challenging. I also brought The National Theatre’s Associate Director Marianne Elliott into the equation because we’d previously worked together and she loved it too.’ The central character is Christopher, a fifteen year old maths genius with behavioural problems which indicate a form of autism. He’s never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, detests being touched and distrusts strangers. A dog’s been killed and although Christopher’s under suspicion, his detective work takes him on a scary journey. It’s one of the most uplifting plays I’ve seen and the seven Oliviers awarded to the production, prove it’s an award-winning combination. I suspect it will be up for a few Tony Awards. ‘Turning Mark’s novel into a play was a total joy,’ admits Simon. ‘My 16 year old son Oscar
loved it and gave me some useful notes – so that’s a mark of its appeal as a family show. Oscar’s a good writer as is seven year old Scarlet, while ten year old Stanley has more scientific interests,’ says the proud dad. Fast becoming one of our most prolific, contemporary writers accumulating a series of prestigious awards both here and abroad, Simon explains how he gave up ‘a proper job’ to write full-time. ‘Growing up in Stockport and being into music initially I turned my story-writing into lyrics and was in a band for a brief period. At York University I joined the dramatic society to meet girls and realised again how theatre was such a creative medium.’ With a degree in History Simon moved to Edinburgh, met his future wife Polly and worked as a teacher before becoming a professional playwright. ‘I’d been offered a residency and phoned her to ask advice. She’s always been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to go for it which is amazing because for ten years no-one was interested in my work.’ The 43 year old playwright has now made his home in London although he cycles daily to a nearby office to write and still visits Stockport regularly. With his work performed internationally, Simon’s still his own sternest critic. ‘A play can be as much a monster as a diamond. I write final versions but if, during rehearsals, I see something’s not working of course I’ll do a rewrite. A play is never really finished. ‘The success of The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time, is the combination of Marianne’s direction, the outstanding set, which is like being inside Christopher’s brain, and the creative work of Frantic Assembly, which make this a magical experience in the theatrical sense. I hope audiences will be moved by Christopher’s journey and recognise that inspiring people are capable of achieving extraordinary things.’ The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time, 18 December 2014 to 10 January 2015. Art news Houses that feel like homes
From left: 18th century Spanish oak carver chair; 19th century Italian candlesticks
Josephine Ryan knows exactly how to style a room to suit her customers’ tastes as the amazing array of furnishings, works of art and accessories testifies in her eponymous shop. Her sense of style is so sought after that Josephine’s books on the subject have become bibles to both interior designers and homemakers. As the nights darken and we light up comforting fires, we choose our favourite pieces from her new stock; pieces that make a house feel like an ideal home in winter. Cold days invite thoughts of hot, satisfying lunches and there is no more impressive way to serve the roast than from a handsome carver such as her 18th century Spanish version that has been smartly re-upholstered. To enhance the dining table Josephine’s pair of 19th century silver, Italian candlesticks, with flickering candle flames, will inject quality and gentle light into the room. Then, as the soothing food and wine take their effect, a drop-end sofa will prove irresistible for reclining with the latest issue of The Cheshire Magazine. Finally, as light fades and another log or two is added to the glowing fire, the sofa will easily convert to an elegant bed, providing the perfect place to doze off on a winter’s evening. A very Shropshire Christmas For a wonderful, festive day out for all the family this November, head south to Enginuity, part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums in Shropshire, for a fabulously Christmassy contemporary craft fair. The event will see craftspeople and artisans from across Shropshire and the West Midlands gathering to showcase a whole variety of handmade designs and one-of-a-kind gifts, with stalls selling beautiful and unusual pieces of jewellery, glassware, ceramics, textiles and metal work, as well as handmade wrapping paper, cards, crackers and locally made food. Now in its tenth year, the fair is always a huge success and this year will even give families the chance to make snowflake tree decorations with state-of-the-art laser cutting technology. 22-23 November (ironbridge.org.uk)

Q. Was this career a childhood ambition or something that came later on? A. I have been drawing and painting as far back as I can remember so it was definitely a childhood ambition to carry that on into a career. I feel very lucky to have been able to develop my love for design, particularly textile design into a successful career in the fashion industry and now with my own design range called Almathea Rose, which is a collection of silk scarves and cushions printed with my hand-illustrated designs. Q. What inspires you? A. My studio is based at Merebrook House, an Edwardian country house on the Wirral. My studio is up in the eaves looking down onto the gardens, which provide constant changing inspiration for my floral designs throughout the seasons. My Almathea Rose designs are inspired by Pre-Raphaelite artists such as J.W.Waterhouse and Rossetti and their love of all things beautiful. The floral designs of William Morris inspire my own organic, hand-drawn floral illustrations. I love colour inspired by nature and it features heavily in my designs.
Movie posters have become highly collectable in recent decades – but to be sought after, they must be original, meaning that they were produced to coincide with the film’s original distribution rather than produced later like the vast quantities of cheap prints copied from the originals. In some cases, so few of the originals have survived that they sell to keen collectors for many thousands of pounds. Fortunately, there are numerous modestly priced film posters which are great for starting an art collection, and Limelight Movie Art stocks a huge range (including classics such as To Have and Have Not, The Prince and the Showgirl and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) making their website an excellent place to start browsing. (limelightmovieart.com)
Q. What have been the highlights of your career so far? A. One of my career highlights so far was receiving a commission from the Liverpool River Island store for a series of hand-painted murals to decorate the walls of its refurbished flagship store. The murals were inspired by glamorous girls of Liverpool and their love of fashion. My favourite painting reflected the humour of the city, with a girl in her rollers taking her Superlambanana for a stroll down Cavern Walks. I really enjoyed painting the murals and it gives me great pride whenever I go into River Island to see them on the walls. I have also been lucky enough to work as an intern at Alexander McQueen in London. It was a very intense experience and very hard work but the highlight was seeing a silk skirt I had handpainted with oriental flowers and birds on the catwalk at his A/W03 collection at Paris Fashion Week. THIS IDEA Carol Cordrey is wowed by Chester artist, Nick Munro’s creativity and determination
A
fter studying engineering and design at London’s acclaimed Imperial College, followed by a Masters Degree at the Royal College of Art, Nick Munro has utilised both strands of his qualifications to create practical but extremely stylish homewares that have become a phenomenal success. Shock and awe concisely describe my responses to the extraordinary sources of inspiration employed by today’s artists and

designers but just when I thought I had seen it all, I interviewed Nick Munro. It is no exaggeration to say that I was absolutely stunned when he told me that his successful career was launched by a mere bedspring. Frankly, only someone with an especially creative talent like his could look at such a mundane bedroom item and immediately think, ‘eggcup!’. I am not alone in being impressed by him because that innovative eggcup earned Nick Munro the award for UK Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 1988. The money from that award enabled him to kick-start his business, ‘I saw some old bedsprings then got hold of some wire of a smaller diameter and bent it to the shape of an eggcup,’ reveals Nick. ‘I took it to a little factory in Manchester and said to them, “I’ve got this idea” and they made it into the eggcup design I wanted.’ Returning home to his rented flat in Chester, Nick walked straight to the bottom of the property’s garden where, fortuitously, a silverplating workshop was able to add the finishing touch to his prototype. Next stop on his memorable journey was Habitat. ‘I told the buyers I wanted to sell it to them along with other products I’d designed, such as coasters, so I did a sell-sell-sell job on them. Soon after that I received an order from Habitat on

my fax machine; It was for £25,000 and I can still see that order pouring out of my fax… it was the break that everybody needs.’ A trip to the bank secured the essential cash needed to satisfy that crucial order, and the cash received from the subsequent Entrepreneur award enabled Nick to get a sound footing for his design business. He was well and truly launched and in business. Nick rapidly expanded his portfolio, which blended antique designs with modern ones, exemplified by his successful cocktail items and tea and coffee sets. ‘A lot of my designs are rooted in the past and take inspiration from people like Christopher Dresser and Susie Cooper. I really love those stylish eras – Deco, Nouveau, etc.’ Commissions and collaborative projects have flowed in from a string of prestigious companies, such as Wedgwood, John Lewis, Royal Selangor in Malaysia and the V&A Museum. They have brought him not just great satisfaction but great experience too ‘All of them were really good experiences… it was a privilege meeting people with their level of skill and savvy because they fully understood the process from the designing stage to the moulding and finally to the finishing.’ His success is surely harnessed to his attention to the detail and finish of his products, as well as their design and he scours the globe for the best companies to satisfy his high standards. ‘It’s not easy making the best of anything but we chase the best and I celebrate the fact that the people who provide it are diverse: For example, the best for cutlery is in Korea; the best producers of linens are in Macclesfield; the best people we’ve found for furniture are in Preston and Cheltenham; the best pewter comes from Sheffield or Malaysia; the best ceramics are made in Portugal or Stoke in Trent; and the best bone China comes from China.’ Nick developed his range of designs in eponymous retail
spaces within prime locations like Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Liberty’s. It was a steep learning curve and en route, he met up with that great British design guru, Sir Terence Conran, who was very encouraging and gave him advice that has motivated Nick ever since. ‘He said to me, “its never easy… nobody’s got all the answers… just make it happen”. In business, there are always ups and downs but that’s life so I just stick to his advice and try to make it happen.’ One of the many ambitions that Nick has undoubtedly brought to fruition was the opening of his own retail space in the location he knew and loved best, Chester. ‘In 2010 we rolled out the store and filled it with our own designs for mugs, cufflinks, tea towels, coffee pots, greetings cards, etc. and we found that Chester was very supportive. Our local customers are very important to us – they have lots of pride in the city and they want to nurture it which is great. And Chester’s many tourists love to experience independent retailers so we get lots of visitors to the store.’ That success has spurred Nick on towards yet more projects that involve the development of a variety of his designs spanning folding furniture to stylish saucepans. Even more exciting is his decision to expand on the success of Chester by finding a location in London for the next Nick Munro store. Clearly, he is a busy man and I suggest that creating all this must be a major task: ‘I’ve never met anybody who became successful without hard graft’, he replies candidly, then he made a statement that Sir Terence Conran would surely agree with. ‘There’s a strong connection between clear sightedness, pure hard work and success.’ It’s a connection that all of us would do well to remember. Watch news This month we’re most impressed by singing birds from Jaquet Droz and IWC Schaffhausen’s beautiful Portofino Midsize photography exhibition w o r ds : r ic h a r d b r o w n
Taste for Titanium
Bird song Being able to call on 276 years of watchmaking history, it’s perhaps no surprise that today Jaquet Droz makes some of the most beautiful timepieces in the world. Its Bird Repeater Open Work is a case in point. On its dial, the remarkable minute repeater features two blue tits feeding their fledglings. As the watch chimes the time, the birds spread their wings, a waterfall tumbles and an egg is hatched. More works of art than mere wristwatches, only eight of the 508-component-comprising creations will be made. Bird Repeater Open Work, £354,100 Jaquet Droz, (jaquet-droz.com)

The brand’s most recent invention, the athletic-looking RM 33-01 Automatic, sports Mille’s new skeletonised RMXP3 caliber, which comprises an off-centre platinum micro rotor. The tripartite case, with a 45.70mm diameter and a thickness of 9.20mm, is mounted on a rubber strap secured with a folding clasp in grade 5 titanium. Water-resistant to 30 metres, the watch will be available from next year in titanium, red gold or white gold. RM 33-01 Automatic, TBA, Richard Mille (richardmille.com )

The Hollywood effect An all-star cast descended on Portofino earlier in the year to celebrate the launch of IWC’s Portofino Midsize collection. Debuting 30 years ago, the Portofino is perhaps the brand’s most celebrated creation, named after the Italian village by an employee who is still with IWC today. The Midsize watches were launched with the help of Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz, Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Zhou Xun via a campaign shot by legendary German photographer Peter Lindbergh. The collection comprises four red gold and six stainless-steel timepieces, each of which is available with a diamond-set bezel or a slightly more understated variation with twelve jewels on the dial. Jewellery news Be inspired by what nature has to offer, go minimal with Mont Blanc and head over the moon with Marco Bicego’s latest collection WORDS BY OLIVIA SHARPE
Like a charm In time for Christmas, Harry Winston has launched three new diamond charms, each of which pays tribute to a signature motif of the jewellery house. The Fifth Avenue Vault charm takes inspiration from Harry Winston’s iconic flagship store by featuring a vault door which reveals a hidden surface; this can be engraved with a personal message. Similarly, the Diamond Gates Heart charm reinterprets the New York flagship with round brilliant and baguette-cut diamonds, while the Diamond Cluster Heart charm captures the timeless beauty of this enduring design with rows of exquisite brilliant and pear-shaped diamonds. (harrywinston.com)
Once in a blue moon Marco Bicego has become well known for his natural approach to designing jewellery, hand-making each of his pieces in 18-carat gold. The designer has chosen to return to his roots and pay homage to nature in a new collection called Lunaria, inspired by the beautiful Lunaria Annua flower. The collection comprises necklaces, rings, bracelets and cuffs, each piece features irregular and disc-shaped pods to represent the flower’s seedpods and have been hand-crafted using the signature Bullino technique: a special tool gives all of the brand’s pieces their unique fine-brushed texture. Prices start from £1,000 Lunaria collection, exclusive to Harvey Nichols (harveynichols.com) 70

Q&A
with Vogue jewellery editor Carol Woolton
Carol Woolton’s new book, Floral Jewels, explores how the flower has been a source of inspiration for the world’s leading fine jewellery designers throughout the ages
La Vie Bohème Proving that it’s moved on so much from the days when it was known chiefly as a luxury pen brand, Montblanc has released its latest jewellery collection, Bohème. The understated and refined jewellery collection remains very much in keeping with the brand aesthetic and features classic silver and gold pieces that have been created for a sophisticated, discerning woman, including a beautiful gold bangle in pink gold with diamond pavé and a pair of simple silver hoop earrings with white sparkling lacquer. Bohème, available in Montblanc boutiques (montblanc.com)
Q: Which jewellery house do you think has captured the flower most accurately? A: Flowers are subject to trends like anything else and I believe there are certain designers who have captured their period. Tiffany’s enamel orchid, for instance, encapsulated the era of the Golden Age in New York and the wealthy industrialists who were vying to have the most exotic hot house. Dior has created a whole collection of flowers for a new generation; they’re bold, exotic, poisonous, lacquered and vibrant. Q: You mention how environmental concerns have resulted in the current trend for wildflowers; could you elaborate on this? A: I think we’re all much more aware of the simplicity of nature and the need to protect it. Meadow flowers like buttercups and primroses, for example, will resonate with people as they realise how important it is that we maintain natural beauty. René Lalique was one of the first to create a fashion for looking at humbler flowers in a way that had never happened before. Q: What was the biggest revelation you found when going through the jewellery archives? A: It’s extraordinary when you get to see how scraps of drawings transform into these beautiful three-dimensional objects. The Cartier archive is astonishing; I was privileged enough to see some of the original botanical books that its designers worked from in the 19th century. Q: If you had to base a collection around a flower, which one would you choose? A: I love the hydrangea because it maintains its structure. Most flowers lose their petals and fall apart as they wilt, whereas the hydrangea, even when it’s dying, is still rather beautiful.
True Chromance There’s no doubting Solange Azagury-Partridge’s passion for colour and her latest collection, Chromance, is a true testament to this love affair. The kaleidoscopic line includes the Chlorophyll necklace in an intense emerald green and the Spectrum earrings, which can be transformed into a necklace for a miraculous day to evening metamorphosis. (solange.co.uk)
Q: You have said in the past that often people don’t realise the importance of jewellery; do you think this is changing? A: I think the jewellery industry has completely changed in the last 15 years. Fashion brands which now incorporate jewellery into collections have propelled people towards becoming more adventurous and, in turn, designers too. The industry is more daring, adventurous and fun. The Grand Bazaar Well-made shoes are key to completing any look and European shoewear brand Louis Leeman certainly knows how to bring flamboyancy to a new level, demonstrated by its glitzy A/W14 collection, entitled The Treasures of the Grand Bazaar. History in the making Since it was first created back in 1896, the LV monogram has become a universally recognised symbol of the Louis Vuitton house. The pattern itself has altered little, except in 2001 when graffiti artist Stephen Sprouse decided to deconstruct its traditional image. Since then, artists have continued to give their own subversive interpretations. For 2014, the fashion powerhouse has called upon six leading design figures – including Karl Lagerfeld, Cindy Sherman and Christian Louboutin – to create their own versions in tribute to the monogram. From Kawakubo’s holey bag to Crawford’s stickered trunk, each one tells its own story. (icons.louisvuitton.com)

Inside, it houses Beckham’s personal edit of A/W14 collections across ready-to-wear, Victoria Victoria Beckham, eyewear, denim and accessories, as well as a newly launched range of small leather goods. Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) is the exposure of the entire body to extreme cold to stimulate the body’s natural response to inflammation, pain, spasms and promote healing. Proven to improve joint and muscular function from sporting injuries and accelerate recovery WBC can also be used to treat chronic arthritic diseases and skin conditions. For many, though, it is an answer to the everyday stresses and strains, stimulating endorphin production, easing tension and promoting sleep. o hectic is Barbara Hulanicki’s schedule that she hasn’t even seen a copy of her new book, The Biba Years. I hand her mine, a sturdy commute-unfriendly coffee table tome full of anecdotes, cuttings and wide-eyed Twiggy doppelgängers selling daisy-print cotton tunics and chalk-stripe trouser suits. ‘Wow, it’s great, isn’t it!’ she laughs, as we sit down to chat in her friend’s west London home, the top floor of which she’s made her own apartment. Impressed by the level of cultural detail, her co-author [and curator of costume and textiles at the Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove] Martin Pel was able to add, she whispers, ‘Martin did a marvellous job. I wasn’t even aware of half the stuff going on at the time!’ The daughter of Polish immigrants, Barbara spent a chunk of her early life growing up in Jerusalem with her parents and two sisters. Following her father Witold’s assassination by the Communist Polish government, the family moved to Brighton to live with her mother’s half-sister, the glamorous but overbearing Sophie Gassner, who would have a huge impact on Barbara’s life. ‘Witold’s death was to be the defining moment in daughter Barbara’s life; the presence of Aunt Sophie, the influence and motivation throughout her career,’ the opening chapter, Becoming Biba, reads.
Post-war London was going through rapid change as the feminist movement gained momentum, and with it the idea of teenage consumers who didn’t want to dress like their mothers. In 1953, British Vogue launched a regular feature named Young Idea, showcasing clothes for young girls and women aged between 17 and 25. Mary Quant opened her boutique Bazaar two years later on The King’s Road, aimed at wealthy Chelsea girls, fostering what Diana Vreeland, former editor-in-chief of American Vogue, would coin the ‘Youthquake’ of the 1960s. But affordable, accessible and fashionable garments – the kind we take for granted on any high street today – were still out of reach for the average young woman. Barbara began by illustrating, designing, and submitting her creations to competitions – and winning. Her wide-eyed, willowy signature sketches depicted young, carefree girls in bathing suits and short dresses. The glossy fashion editors were queueing up to commission her to cover the couture shows of Dior, Balenciaga and Balmain which would ‘dictate the style of dress that women, young and old, would soon be wearing the world over’. But she soon got bored with the monotony: ‘nothing was truly new’. In the late 1950s, she met Stephen Fitz-Simon, whom she would marry in 1961. They launched a

mail-order business, providing ‘inexpensive fashion for everyone’, which they named Biba’s Postal Boutique, using the nickname of one of Barbara’s sisters. The first advert for the mail-order shop appeared in the Daily Express in June 1963, featuring a design for a drawstring maxi skirt in brushed cotton. Its success led to the first of five bricks-andmortar addresses at 87 Abington Road which officially opened on 5 September 1964. The Daily Mirror ran with a headline that same year declaring: ‘Four girls prove that beauty and business ideas can go together.’ How everything (and nothing) has changed… ‘There should be a plaque [there],’ says Twiggy, ‘it transformed the way the ordinary girl in the street dressed… it was a tiny corner shop, an old chemist’s in a quiet residential street. But before long, Biba was a Mecca for everyone from shop girls to debs… Not only did the clothes look
amazing, you could afford to buy something every week.’ By democratising style, Barbara changed the face of fashion forever. Recognised in 2012 for her services to fashion, Hulanicki is much more than a fashion designer: where Biba led, the rest followed. ‘I just think, ‘really?’’ she laughs, still, genuinely bewildered after all these years that people are so interested. ‘It’s kind of a surprise to hear, because when you were running these shops you heard nothing but complaints!’ She looks fabulous, embracing her late 70s like only a true style icon can: white-blonde bob, black thick-rimmed glasses, black skinny jeans and a thrown-on beige blazer with bold accessories. She describes her style today as ‘very lazy’, but I’m inclined to disagree. ‘By the time you’re as old as I am, you’ve worked out what works for you and what doesn’t, and you don’t try new things.’ The first Abington Road store was always swarming with celebrities who couldn’t wait to endorse Barbara and her brand. It hosted everyone from Mick Jagger and his then girlfriend Chrissie Shrimpton to Sonny and Cher, Twiggy and Yoko Ono, as well as every other iconic face of the era. Bursting at the seams after six months, the company’s move to larger premises in 1965 brought with it a deluge of press coverage. ‘Biba started the boutique boom,’ reported the Evening News, ‘now at the height of fashion’s frenzy to buy beat clothes in the ‘little shops’, the boutique that began it all is blazing a new trail for the breakaways.’ Barbara turned her hand to everything, including the signature interiors which would follow the brand in its upward move across London, culminating – via a couple more store fronts along the way – with the opening of the seven-floor Derry & Toms department store in

1973, which became a must-see attraction. The symbolic black and gold Art Deco-style Biba logo also played a crucial part in the company’s pioneering brand marketing success, and was customised across the different products from food to wallpaper: its 15 departments offered customers the opportunity to buy almost any product for the home. The Sunday Mirror declared Big Biba, as it was to be known ‘the most beautiful store in the world.’ People would come and spend the day and evening there; shopping all day followed by lunch in the 500-seat Rainbow Room, which operated as a music venue at night, making Biba a hub for the decade’s glam rock ‘n’ rollers: David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Freddie Mercury. To put it succinctly, it dressed, dined and hosted swinging London. But after huge highs came a low from which it couldn’t recover, and it was all over as quickly as it started: After launching in America at the start of the decade, Biba fell by the wayside in the mid-1970s, with Barbara leaving the company in 1975 due to financial troubles and a deal with British Land. ‘I was okay for two days and then it hit me,’ Barbara said at the time. ‘I didn’t know who I was any more. Biba had been my life, my dream.’ In the decades that have followed, she has turned her hand to designing anything and everything from hotel rooms to buildings. I’d read that she was even sick of talking about fashion. ‘Never!’ she blasts. ‘I just love working. It’s a lovely change, because you apply the same principle, but with buildings it takes much longer to see the results. It can take up to two years, and you think, gosh I hope I was right two years ago! With clothes it’s very instant and immediate. I like doing both; it depends on the people you’re working with. That makes a hell of a difference.’ Splitting her time between London and Miami, she likes the constant change of pace. ‘It’s really nice coming home to a family. I spend my time just seeing people; all my old friends, all the time, non-stop. But it’s very interesting and fun to be in America too
because they haven’t got a clue about Biba. They think it’s couture and I say no, it was the very opposite of couture!’ She has no regrets, but says she wouldn’t want to produce again. ‘Going back, I wouldn’t do it differently, we had such freedom. What was exciting for us was that we were in immediate touch with the public; there wasn’t a buyer in between who was trying to redesign everything, which is what happens today. You knew the public liked it, so you could go on and do other things like it. If they didn’t like it, then out it would go. You could respond immediately.’ For Hulanicki, two garments capture the essence of Biba; a black crepe evening dress from 1973 and a purple linen day suit from 1974. For her biographer Martin Pel, and for many of whom the 1960s can only be visualised through films and documentaries, a scene from the 2010 film Made in Dagenham springs to mind, which tells the story of a 1968 strike among female sewing machinists at the Ford Motor Company’s plant in Essex. A red-linen Biba dress symbolises the film’s themes of women’s emancipation and economic independence; admired throughout, it is worn by central character Rita when she successfully fights to introduce equal pay legislation into parliament. But she’s not interested in looking back. So what’s on the horizon for Barbara? ‘Anything new. I don’t know what’s round the corner but they’ll have to wheel me out!’ The Biba Years, 1963-1975 by Barbara Hulanicki &Martin Pel, £35 (vandashop.com) The Biba Gold capsule collection is available at House of Fraser (houseoffraser.co.uk)

TREATMENT OF THE MONTH 3D LASHES Some people don’t leave the house without freshly blown hair or bronzer, for me, it’s mascara. So when I was asked to try out some fabulously natural falsies I jumped at the chance. The first thing that Jane explained as she settled me on her massage table was that there was no talking for the duration as she applied the thin fibre lashes to my own. That’s quite a long time for a chatterbox but taking the time out helped the busy day. My aim was for natural mascara-effect eyes, nothing over the top and too obvious – although you can go as long and lush as you want. Considering it was only my second meeting with Jane, it was with trust that I closed my eyes and prepared for two hours of listening to music (Jane has a great selection for all tastes) as the makeover commenced.
After the success of its Terrybly Densiliss foundation launched last year, By Terry has followed on from this with the launch of its first total age repair cover collection this November. Comprising a primer containing an anti-wrinkle serum, a concealer featuring an anti-wrinkle dark circle corrector, a wrinkle-control compressed powder and a blush designed to light up the complexion and hide imperfections, the new Terrybly Densiliss range promises to deliver expert coverage along with great anti-ageing results. 3D lashes are thinner and much softer than some products out there. They take so long to apply because each of your lashes has to have a single 3Dlash attached and then another two either side with a gentle adhesive until you have a full set. We enhanced teh results with an eyelash tint to my natural set. After the treatment (Jane recommends two sessions), when you open your eyes they feel slightly sticky for a moment. The next is the ‘mirror moment’ with the apprehensive first look. I could not tell that they were fake, or discern my natural lashes from my new helpers. The 3D lashes don’t harm your natural ones but you do have to be a little careful in looking after them – no oil-based make-up removers and a little preen with a brush and you’re good to go. Four weeks later I returned, happy and loving the lashes. How long between filler sessions depends on you and your routine. For me this was right and an hour later I was back to full fluttering strength. Verdict: A natural looking, pain-free eye makeover. 3D Lashes, from £110 (approx.2hours 30mins) Complimentary eyebrow tint and shapes available with the 3D lashes for a limited period if you mention this review Jane Osborne, Beauty Basics at Alderley Edge (wahanda.com; 0776 809 7246)
Miracle powder It may not look very appetising, but the new range of antioxidentrich tea powders from BLOOM certainly make up in results what they lack in looks. Designed to be added to hot or cold drinks (or mixed with cold water to create a superfood shot), each powder is intended to have different benefits, from stress reduction and concentration boosting to giving you younger-looking skin. We’re particular fans of the Absolute Matcha which, after only a week’s worth of daily shots, really did make us feel more alert and healthier. With cancer-fighting properties and the option of a mojito-flavoured variety, we must admit, we’re impressed.
Three years after the launch of the Black Rose Cream Mask (which became a cult product in record time), Sisley has launched its first facial skincare oil – Black Rose Precious Face Oil – a silky-smooth dry oil which promises to prepare and nourish skin and awaken the senses. We love that it combines plant-based active ingredients to nourish and protect as well as helping to combat visible signs of dermal ageing. urberry has dug deep into its archives and revealed a series of images capturing its iconic trench coat to celebrate its centenary this November. The first prototype of the classic wardrobe staple was created in 1879 by Thomas Burberry and was then adapted in 1914 at the request of the British military so that it could be worn to protect officers from the wind and rain in the trenches. It has since evolved into a symbol of timeless British style and an essential fashion item worn by celebrities, Hollywood actors and royalty alike. The famous lightweight fabric, known as gabardine, is still used today by the team of experts in Castleford who employ 100 highly skilled processes to make the coats, including stitching that is unique to the British fashion house. The French firm’s new global boss, Linda Jackson, wants to transform the often hideously frustrating event of going to a dealer and offer transparency, which is ‘the way the world’s going’. If Jackson’s idea takes off this could be the start of advisor sites for all dealerships around the UK. We watch with anticipation on how the online plans pan out.
New blood at Ferrari F1 Ferrari is currently enduring its worst year in recent memory in Formula One, languishing in fourth place on the constructor’s table — behind Mercedes, Red Bull and Williams — and incoming chairman Sergio Marchionne has made no effort to hide his displeasure with the performance of the team behind the Prancing Horse. The team hasn’t won an F1 title since 2008 and Ferrari’s misfortunes continue despite its racing pedigree and one of the best drivers in the paddock (although it’s now official that Alonso will leave the team at the end of this year, with Sebastian Vettel filling his seat from 2015). ‘I keep on being reminded there are a number of factors that impact on performance and then I go to Monza and I see the first six cars on the grid not being Ferrari and not being powered by Ferrari engines and my blood pressure — as much as I keep it under control — just popped and if it happens once and then happens twice, eventually you wake up and you say, “well, maybe there’s a better way to do this”’. Let’s see if Marchionne, 67, can turn the tide and better his predecessor’s eight constructors’ world championships and five consecutive drivers’ titles between 2000 and 2004. (formula1.ferrari.com)

Can the Bentley Continental GT V8 S top its previous incarnations? Richard Yarrow takes a test drive to find out
The CHESHIRE Magazine | Motoring
I
f someone asks what you do for a living and you reply ‘motoring journalist’, all other conversation tends to dry up. How long the hiatus lasts depends on how much of a car enthusiast they are. It’s true, we do sometimes lead a charmed life. There are the charter flights to glamorous launch destinations, five-star hotels to stay in and, in general, better weather than the UK. But, like every job, there is the more mundane stuff – weighty articles about sales trends, worthy but dull industry profiles and getting properly lost in France because of a dodgy sat-nav smartphone app. All of these have happened to me in the last fortnight. But what about the cars, I hear you ask. Same story really. There are the ones you want to drive and the ones you have to drive. For every Ferrari there are ten Fords. Then, just occasionally, something comes along that surprises you. It might be a new £10,000 city car that raises the bar for customers in that segment, or a £100,000 sports coupé that’s bristling with exciting new technology –
witness the BMW i8. Expectations are not always met, occasionally they are exceeded. Case in point: my new favourite car, the Bentley Continental GT V8 S. Money no object, it’s as good as it gets. First launched in 2003 to near-universal acclaim, the Continental GT has turned Bentley from a niche luxury brand into a global performance car player. The all-new second generation model debuted in 2011, sharpening the design and improving on almost every other aspect. From the drawing board, part of the programme was the arrival of a second engine option, a 4.0-litre V8 engine to sit below the 6.0-litre W12. At ‘only’ 500bhp – rather than 553bhp from the W12 – it’s no shrinking violet, and has proved extremely popular with customers who want improved fuel economy and a car that’s notably lighter at the front end. Perhaps inevitably, Bentley couldn’t leave it alone… so now we get the V8 S, available as a coupé or convertible. The most obvious change is the extra 21bhp, so now it’s 521bhp, but no one driving it on a public road will
97
Motoring | The CHESHIRE Magazine
notice. What’s far more evident is the work that’s gone on under the skin to improve the all-wheel drive powertrain. The sports suspension has been lowered so the V8 S rides 10mm closer to the ground, while the suspension and damping have been revised and stiffened. The steering has also been recalibrated to match the chassis adjustments. Overall, Bentley’s desire was to offer a more engaging and responsive behind-the-wheel experience. I think they’ve succeeded and then some. On the road, the V8 S is an astonishing machine and offers a truly spirited ride. You can simply select D on the eight-speed automatic transmission’s knurled-finish gear selector and do nothing else, but you’re missing out on half the fun. Switch it to S mode for a sharper throttle response, gears held for longer and
‘The V8 S also benefits from a distinctive styling upgrade to mark it out from other Continental GTs’ faster shifts between them. The V8 S coupé will sprint to 60mph in just 4.3 seconds and power on to a top speed of 192mph. The convertible isn’t much slower. Obviously I only have Bentley’s word for these figures. What hasn’t changed is the clever variable displacement technology. It means the twin-turbo unit has the power to automatically shut down four of the eight cylinders when cruising. This reduces fuel consumption without any loss of refinement. When more power is required, the engine seamlessly switches back to the full eight cylinders. What’s more, the exhaust note remains characterful in both situations. The result is official Combined Cycle fuel economy of 26.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 246g/km, or 25.9mpg and 254g/km on the convertible. Bentley reckons you can get more than 500 miles from a full tank of petrol. The V8 S also benefits from a distinctive
98
styling upgrade to mark it out from other Continental GTs. The new front splitter, side sills and gloss black rear diffuser are certainly striking, but also boost aerodynamic performance by reducing front-end lift and providing greater stability at higher speeds. My test car, a coupé, also came with gloss black door mirror caps to complement the look. Add in the black grille with single chrome divider bar at the front, plus the ‘figure of eight’ exhaust at the back, and you’ve got a stunning-looking machine. As always with Bentleys, it’s the last word in elegant and sophisticated luxury. The cabin is completed in soft-touch leather – mine had the optional contrasting stitching – wood veneers, polished metals and deep-pile carpeting, all hand-crafted in Bentley’s factory in Crewe. Externally, 20-inch ‘open-spoke’ alloy wheels are unique to the V8 S, revealing distinctive, red-painted brake calipers behind. My car was actually riding on optional 21s, which look stunning and don’t compromise the ride at all. Subtle ‘V8 S’ badges are applied to each front wing and door sill, and as with other members of the Continental V8 family, the famous Bentley wings badges feature a red centre. Needless to say, all this doesn’t come cheap. The V8 S is £139,000 and mine had another £40,000 of options. They included carbon ceramic brakes, Naim audio system, adaptive cruise control, sports exhaust and a vehicle tracking system. My guess is you’re probably thinking ‘lucky bugger, he gets to drive a £180k Bentley’. Yes, I am and I do – it’s parked outside – but that doesn’t tell the whole story. I’m writing this, because I have a deadline, in a grotty motorway service station coffee shop. It’s 8pm on a Sunday night and traffic on the road outside is stationary. I’ve just paid nearly £12 for something pretending to be dinner and I’ve still got 100 miles left to drive. My wife and kids are at home, I’m not. Welcome to the world of the motoring journalist. Not as glamorous as you might think. (bentleymotors.com)

agged as the ‘most progressive sports car ever’, the BMW i8 has certainly caused a stir in the motoring world since its release in July. Fans of classic BMW models might expect all the usual tricks from this latest concept, but the i8, created by the brand’s quasi-mysterious i department, is something altogether new; a true hybrid of the eco-friendly electric car and the deliciously decadent sports car. And, frankly, it looks good enough to have even supercar aficionados itching to get behind the wheel. The sleek, futuristic lines appear as if from the fantasy world of Star Wars, although each curve and contour is designed practically to improve aerodynamics, stability and efficiency – at odds with the impression the bodywork gives – namely, that drivers are headed for a galaxy far, far away. I doubt Chewbacca would fit in the back of this Millennium Falcon, though – the i8 is certainly your typical sports car in that respect. But enough shallowness. It’s time to stop staring openmouthed at the i8’s luscious outer shell and delve into the nitty-gritty of what launches this car light years ahead of its contemporaries.

The Showdown:
Xbox One vs Playstation 4
words: Iain Warde
F
irst to the hardware: Both PS4 and Xbox One multiply their predecessors. More importantly, they are built with smarter internal designs (which hopefully will mean fewer red rings of death). Xbox One has a custom 1.75GHz AMD 8-core CPU, but the PS4 remains clocked at 1.6GHz. It does contain a similar custom AMD 8-core CPU with x86 based architecture, but Microsoft’s offering is roughly 10 per cent more powerful. Memory: PS4 has a distinct advantage here with a faster 8GB GDDR5 memory, while Xbox One has a slower bandwidth of the 8GB DDR3 variety. But, neither system allocates all of that RAM to game developers – some is reserved to run their operating system. PS4 reserves up to 3.5GB for its operating system, leaving developers with 4.5GB according to documentation. An extra 1GB of ‘flexible’ memory can also be available, but that’s not guaranteed! Xbox One’s guaranteed memory amounts to a slightly higher 5GB for developers, as Microsoft’s multi-layered operating system takes up a steady 3GB. What’s in the box? All Xbox One boxes contain an HDMI cable, wired mono headset and (miserly) 14-day free trial for Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold online service. There’s no USB charging cable, as the Xbox One controller uses batteries out of the box. Inside the PS4 box is the console and one DualShock 4 controller. Wires include an HDMI cable (Sony learned its 104

lesson after backlash for not including one with the PS3) and a micro-USB cable for the controller. Hidden also inside the box (so don’t be too hasty to throw it away) is a 30-day subscription to PlayStation Plus and a wired mono earbud, contrasting with the just-a-cheap Xbox One headset. Best games: At launch Xbox One offered Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome and Forza Motorsport 5 – the only first-party racing game at launch of either console. Microsoft. The same applies to Call of Duty: Advance Warfare. Xbox One games in development include Halo 5: Guardians, the next Gears of War game, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive and Little Big Planet-esque Project Spark. PS4 exclusive Infamous: Second Son couldn’t match the Titanfall beta, but its superpower-filled gameplay is nonetheless entertaining. Killzone: Shadow and Knack are the two Sony-made games released on launch, but the console is benefiting most from remakes like The Last of Us and digitally distributed indie games.

Backwards compatibility? We would recommend serdar bayraktar / Shutterstock.com keeping your Xbox 360 and PS3 in order to replay the classics. Microsoft is working on an emulator for the Xbox One so you can play 360 games and Sony is also currently working on its streaming game service. Hard drive? Both consoles have a 500GB hard drive but only the PS4 will let you upgrade to a bigger internal size. You can however attach an external hard drive to the Xbox One Online? Both companies now charge for the privilege of playing multiplayer. Microsoft’s offering is still head and shoulders above Sony’s, but it is making headway with Playstation + package. Final verdict: The look of the console, the feel of the controller and the appeal of the games list are the main differences. However, if online gaming with your friends is your main interest, you’ve got a collective decision to make. Microsoft also supports MP3 and DLNA playback, whereas Sony neglects to add such compatibility. Ultimately, these two next-generation consoles are now on a more even playing field and cost (£349.99), which means both are going to start throwing Uncharted 4 and Halo 5:Guardians at you, and that’s a win for all gamers.

Paradise found There is little argument that St Lucia is a destination of choice for that well-earned relaxation in the sun but there’s much more to discover as Janine Murray-Smith finds out
W
hether you’re looking for a relaxing retreat from city life, or seeking adventure in a tropical climate, you’d struggle to find an island with so much diversity. St Lucia is a Caribbean jewel offering the idyllic spot to relax and unwind under the sun, of that there is no argument. However, I was surprised to discover there is so much more at the heart of the island. To get a feel for your surroundings, take a morning trip to the pulsing capital, Castries – a bustling hub of ice-cream coloured buildings. We love Saturday mornings to wander through the local food and vegetable market that fills the senses with fusions of exotic smells and flavours and try some of the Asian, French and West Indian culinary influences. After you have been charmed by the people and your tastebuds tantalised, head across the bay to The Coal Pot for lunch – an elegant marina-side restaurant which has been around for over 40 years serving the well-heeled of
109
Castries. Try and get a table on the veranda by the water and make sure you try the local fresh fish dishes. Don’t forget the island’s only remaining rum distillery either. St Lucia Rum Distillery runs regular tours and tasting. At least one afternoon must be spent in the South of the island at Soufrière, French for ‘sulphur in the air’. Located on the west coast of the island, Soufrière town is home to colonial collections of buildings and bustling seafront. But it is the surrounding landscape that takes your breath away. The twin volcanic peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton look to stand guard over the town and are full to their pinnacles with opportunities to get lost amongst nature’s most spectacular sights. We would recommend the Jungle Biking to explore the natural wonders, from the ethereal springs to hidden waterfalls, however there are some well-established boat excursions too. Here is also a place to explore the nature below the ocean crests, simply hire your scuba gear walk to the water’s edge and within a few fin strokes a magical world will appear before you. If you’d like to immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of a night out, Rodney Bay Village turns on the glamour after sunset. A hive of bars, restaurants and casinos, allow you to indulge in some Caribbean delights before retiring to the serenity of your resort. Whilst here do try Boucan by Hotel Chocolat, where fine-dining meets cocoa heaven. If you’re staying in the area and have dreams of cantering along the beach at sunset most resorts can organise a hack with the National Riding School, and if you’re lucky you and your steed can take to the waves. Also, if jazz is your thing, book early for the annual Jazz Festival on Pigeon Island. It takes place each May and attracts some of the biggest names; we have seen Dionne Warwick, Wyclef and John Legend beneath the trees and with roti in hand. St. Lucia is a vibrant gem of an island, glinting with tranquil aqua waves, emerald mountains, sulphuric moonstone mists and the bright ruby
110
lights of the bay – a dreamlike place that is just as glamorous and spectacular as the setting of a romance novel or film. As Gabriel Garcia Marquez stated, ‘The truth is that there’s not a single line in all my work that does not have a basis in reality. The problem is that Caribbean reality resembles the wildest imagination.’ (Sstlucia.org; coalpotrestaurant.com; scubastlucia.com; thehotelchocolat.com; stluciarums.com; stluciajazz.org)
‘Take a morning trip to the pulsing capital, Castries – a bustling hub of ice-cream coloured buildings’ Where to stay: If it is a sense of total escapism that you’re looking for, Rendezvous, a boutique couples-only resort set on the idyllic white sands of Malabar Beach is the perfect place from which to enjoy this oasis. The hotel has enjoyed a reputation as a destination for romantic getaways ever since it opened in 1966 by the Barnard family, who still own and run the hotel today. You can select from bespoke weddings or vow renewal ceremonies with Rendezvous’ ‘Ever After’ package, where the hotel will attend to every detail for the big day. Offering themes such as ‘Exotic Oasis’ and ‘Island Romance’, couples can completely tailor their wedding, or even renew their vows, with the help of personal wedding consultants and on-site planners to answer your every desire. O
nly last month the 181st Oktoberfest was in full swing. Six million visitors from around the world were raising toasts with hefty tankards of traditional Weissbier. Munich was rolling out oompah bands, dirndl-donning barmaids and strings upon strings of the rather questionablelooking Weisswurst (whiter-than-white sausages to you and me) for the occasion. This is all very well – if you like beer, sausages and tuba players in lederhosen. If you don’t, there are plenty more enlightening things about this corner of Bavaria than staring at the dregs in the bottom of your litre glass. Munich is a place of contradiction, after all. One minute you’ll bump into a throng of pantomime patriots frequenting the beer gardens or putting the world to rights in the cacophonous Hofbräuhaus am Platzl beer hall (I encounter a surprising amount of the traditional leather trusses during my two-day stay). The next, just around the corner on Maximilianstrasse, fashion-forward city slickers in fast cars prowl the designer boutiques lining one of the city’s four royal avenues. And among the grid of spotlessly clean streets and soaring architectural landmarks, cultural hotspots sit in wait at every turn. If you want to head to a concert, play or opera, you’re in the right place. Munich’s cultural kudos is indebted to the Wittelsbach family who once ruled over Bavaria and were responsible for laying the foundations of the 60 theatres and opera houses which litter a city that both the Bavarian State Opera and the Bavarian State Ballet call home. Clustered around the Kunstareal art district, Munich’s 40 museums and 70 galleries continue the impressive culture crawl. I’m not usually an advocate of guided tours, but with high-brow distractions left, right and centre, I left the navigating to our city guide Paul, who turned out to be a walking, talking authority on the Munich art scene. I would recommend ambling around the prestigious Alte Pinakothek. One of the oldest art galleries in the world, it houses an exemplary collection of Old Master paintings

with Rubens, Breugel, da Vinci and Titian all featured in the venerable line-up. Meanwhile, over at the Neue Pinakothek down the road, masterpieces by Constable, Turner, Manet, Monet, Renoir, van Gogh and Degas rub frames. Continuing the Who’s Who of the art world, we also stopped off at Lenbachhaus Museum, the former studio and home of artist Franz von Lenbach, which reopened last year after a four-year renovation. The striking Blue Rider collection of early 20th century expressionist paintings, including work by Wassily Kandinsky, is worth the entrance fee alone. Our final pit-stop, the nearby neoclassical Haus der Kunst, was opened under the Nazis in 1937 as the first monumental building of the Third Reich and has remained one of the city’s most important art spaces. The gallery showcases an eye-opening line-up of contemporary artists, not to mention a rather dazzling Golden Bar, ideal for a much-needed caffeine injection. The city centre of Munich is relatively compact and in the middle of it all sits our hotel, the imposing Bayerischer Hof. The historic address boasts 350 rooms but manages to retain a sense of intimacy despite its size. Opened in 1841 at the behest of King Ludwig, Bayerischer Hof has been owned by the Volkhardt family for more than a century. No expense has been spared in its recent refurbishment. The hotel oozes understated luxury and elegance and I quickly make myself at home in my cosy room; appreciating the sink-into bed and the deep tub in the marbled bathroom all the more after my three-hour walking tour. The rooftop sanctuary of the Blue Spa Bar & Terrace offers vistas accompanied by the warm embrace of an open fireplace, and the swing chair by the flickering flames became my favourite post-swim hang-out. The light and nourishing dishes served up here offer a perfect pick me up after a treatment at the spa too. Come evening, choose from the hotel’s five restaurants. My favourite, the
beautiful Garden Restaurant, resembles a cross between a conservatory and an industrial New York apartment, atmospherically candle-lit and overlooking the pretty patio beyond. The menu is a refined Mediterranean affair, matched with quaffable wines from the impressive collection lined up in endless rows around the bar. There are many more drinking nooks to choose from, dotted around the Bayrischer Hof labyrinth, but if you only pay one a visit, stop by at Falk’s Bar for an aperitif. Located in the mirrored Spiegelsaal dating from 1839, it is the only room in the hotel to have survived the war unscathed and its ornate interior is testament to the former splendour of the building. Watch the world and his wife (and their extremely pampered dogs) go by sipping martinis before heading to the cinema. With 38 seats that swallow you up in their velveteen folds, the silver screen experience here is a far cry from the multiplex. But a December visit to Munich wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the world famous Munich Christmas Market, a glittering, festive bonanza of all that a German Christmas should be. With roots dating back to the 14th century, the atmospheric market takes over the Marienplatz in the heart of the city from November 27 to December 24 this year, offering a labyrinth of stalls selling traditional Bavarian and unique Christmas gifts, including wood carvings from Oberammergau, gingerbread from Nuremberg and beautiful glassware from the Bavarian Forest. My stay in Munich ends on an aptly Bavarian note. Tucked away beneath the hotel, the vaults of Palais Keller restaurant are the place to head for pretzel, sausages, dumplings and schnitzel. Calorie counters might want to give the crackling lard and pâtés a wide berth but order the Bavarian plate for a little taste of everything – you can burn it all off dashing between galleries. I am relieved to see that the infamous white sausages haven’t made it onto the sharing platter (they are only served before 12pm) but the Wiessbier flows all day. When in Munich… Double rooms start from €360, (bayerischerhof.de)

Weekend away …Venice, Italy W O R D S : k at e r a c o v o l i s
W
hen Truman Capote said ‘Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go,’ he couldn’t have described this majestic, decadent place more aptly. It’s a place where roads are made of jade green-tinged water, national monuments are also hotels and every year, is a world stage for art with the Venice Biennale. It is romantic too, as Mr and Mrs George Clooney just reminded us, as Hollywood’s A-list jetted down the Grand Canal in black tie, waving to the snaphappy paparazzi on the banks just last month. It’s narrow, winding streets with no particular grid or pattern give Venice an intriguing sense of mystery that’s hard to ignore – just one turn can lead you to an unexpected or pleasant surprise, and even to frequent visitors, the city which projects a spectacular illusion of floating on water, is a sight you’d never tire of. A tour of the city’s most famous attractions is obligatory, and they are plentiful: Rialto Bridge (the oldest bridge in the city) offers postcardperfect views of the Grand Canal, while Piazza San Marco is lined with vendors selling glass from Murano – a neighbouring island that is renowned for its fine glassware and worth a trip if you have time – as well as theatrical Venetian masks ,which have been a part of the city’s culture since the
beginning of the Festival of Venice dating back to the 12th century. One of the city’s gems is Rubelli, famed for its fabrics, and beautiful silks. The family owned company has been run by the Rubellis for five generations, and a visit to its home is akin to stepping inside a colour-filled wonderland for design. But even the most tourist-laden parts of Venice keep a certain charm, and while the monuments are grand, here you are reminded that small can be very beautiful indeed, whether traversing the streets on your own gondola, or spending a peaceful moment in the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute. Stay at one of the Grand Canal’s latest additions, the Aman resort, which is situated in a beautifully restored old regal home to echo its original Neo-Renaissance and Rococo decoration. Staying here is like travelling back in time. Its lush private garden is also a true escape from the world outside not to be missed. Also not to be missed is Harry’s Bar, one of Venice’s most famous restaurants. Started by restaurateur Giuseppe Cipriani, its peach Bellinis and classic Italian fare are unforgettable. There’s nothing quite like sipping on this aperitif before a beautifully cooked piece of sea bass or perfectly al dente rigatoni. (amanresorts.com; harrysbarvenezia.com; rubelli.com)

ark nights, frost on my paws, bobble hats and scarves all signal the arrival of winter, but it’s the smell of home-baked mince pies that tells me Christmas is just around the corner. What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than venturing out to the picturesque village of Alderley Edge. The village itself is beautiful, but it’s the magic, myths and legends that draw so many people to this area, so I was more than a little excited when Anji my owner suggested a walk to the famous Edge, surrounded by ancient woodlands that leave me in awe of this stunning part of Cheshire. Tales of white wizards and sleeping knights make my fur stand on end but with dogged determination I sniff around for the secret entrance to the cave where knights lie in an enchanted sleep, destined to awaken only when the country is in its greatest hour of peril. After all this historic exercise I put my best paw forward and head to The Wizard Tea Rooms for a bite to eat. Spoilt for choice between hot buttered scones, mouth-watering cakes and afternoon teas, it doesn’t disappoint, especially on doggie treats. Dogs are very welcome here along with children, walkers, horse riders and cyclists, and the staff here are fantastic. It’s been a wizardly wonderful day and it won’t be long before I return for the annual Christmas lights switch on and Christmas market on the 20th November, when artisans and craftspeople arrive from all over Cheshire, bringing with them delicious foods, local wines, beers and liquors for your festive table. Live entertainment adds to the atmosphere, and it’s truly an event not to be missed. But now I must head home, put paw to paper and finish my letter to Santa Paws. Have a wonderful Christmas everyone, see you in the New Year! Love and Licks,

Hannah (aged 14) will be spending one week next June working on a range of different projects with pupils from all over the world. One of the youngest pupils to be invited to the state-of-the-art astrophysics research centre, Hannah hopes it will be a stepping stone to making her own discoveries as a leading astrophysicist in the future. Hannah said: ‘Since I can remember I have always looked up at the stars and asked those most important questions about what is out there and how it all works. So, I just decided to write to CERN. I tried three times but didn’t get anywhere but then in the fourth email I made a breakthrough. I sent them a little story about myself, a CV if you like, and that was when I got a response and was asked a few more questions about my love of science and astronomy. They said how impressed they were and invited me to go out next June.’ (kingsmacc.co.uk; home.web.cern.ch)

The collection features an array of influences from the 1950s, with butter-soft leather sofas and armchairs drenched in hues of aubergine and sage green. We love Baxter’s beautifully textured Mongolian lambswool chair, which strikes the perfect balance between comfort and elegance. For the crowning glory, you’ll need the very best glassware – and, luckily, master glassmaker Georg Reidel’s newest collection, the Veritas Series, has been released just in time for the festive season. The new range incorporates ground-breaking machine-made glass technology developed by the Reidel team to create pieces which look and feel hand-blown and bespoke (though with a notably lower price tag). The series includes glasses for each different wine variety to help maximise flavour, so no matter what your guests are in the mood for, you’ll have the perfect vessel. (reidel.co.uk)

The whole
PACKAGE For Creative Director of Llama Developments Janey Butler and her husband Andy, it’s all about bringing a unique, global perspective to every project. Gemma Knight finds out what inspires this design dynamo and how she’s bringing her personal touch to properties all over Cheshire and the UK

very one of our projects is unique – each one has its own story to tell,’ Janey Butler explains and, whether it be a project involving a listed building, barn conversion, new build or one-off private residence, the distinctive quality of Llama Developments’ work certainly shows. The company, which offers both design and development services and is responsible for some of Cheshire’s most desirable homes, without doubt owes some of its knack for individuality to the perspective afforded by Janey’s eclectic background. Janey was raised in the Cotswolds, where her parents bought and sold houses in idyllic locations which had often been badly neglected and were in need of a good deal of love. ‘My mother would turn the interiors of these often dark, dingy homes into welcoming, warm, inviting spaces with elegant antiques and sumptuous soft furnishings,’ Janey tells me ‘so that undoubtedly influenced my love of interior design from an early age.’ Having always displayed a creative streak, it was no surprise when Janey left the Cotswolds to study at Cheltenham Art College, then later to specialise in textiles at the London College of Fashion. While studying there, she often used to revamp her friends’ rooms in their halls, picking up vintage pieces of furniture at nearby Portobello Road’s famous market and giving them a new lease of life by painting and customizing them – a pastime which proved to be excellent practice and what Janey
128
describes as a ‘huge factor’ in the success of Llama’s projects. After graduating, Janey lived in Dubai for a number of years before eventually moving to Cheshire in 2004. ‘Cheshire is such a beautiful county full of interesting, stylish people with glorious open countryside, beautiful houses and lots of history,’ she beams. ‘On moving here I bought a very run down small holding which is in a beautiful location but was in a very neglected state, but I fell in love with it and set to work renovating. And since moving to Cheshire I’ve met my husband, Andy, and together we’ve grown the business in Knutsford into the award-winning company it is.’ And they certainly haven’t been playing it safe, embracing pioneering techniques such as low-carbon house building and new forms of renewable technology, as well as dedicating themselves to sustainable building

practices to ensure that each home they build will exist in harmony with its environment. ‘Caring for our environment and the landscape is a huge driving force for us at Llama,’ Janey tells me. ‘A home that enhances and benefits its environment is absolutely vital for a successful project, and we try to embrace all the latest technologies and test many of them on our own developments to find the best ones. Many of the professionals we use also come from commercial backgrounds, which is a resource that a lot of domestic architects and developers don’t utilize enough.’ But a pioneering spirit and a fresh approach will only take a brand so far, and we’re convinced it’s Janey and her husband’s unique eye for inspiration and diverse backgrounds which truly make the business what it is. ‘I’ve been very fortunate to have travelled extensively,’ Janey says ‘and, for me, travel is all about seeing and experiencing different aspects of life, meeting interesting people and embracing different ideas and incorporating these aspects within my own personal style which gives my work a really individual quality. I also love nature, so that has a huge impact on my work too. Having grown up on a farm I am a true lover of the countryside and have a huge respect for wildlife and our beautiful landscape, so the use of natural materials such as stone and wood and calming, natural colour schemes play a huge part in our designs. For us, a seamless marriage of functionality and timeless design, natural materials
and our own signature details go into making our own special style.’ As our interview draws to a close, I decide to push my luck and ask if Janey will give me any inside information on her favourite projects. Of course, she is utterly discreet, but nevertheless manages to paint a stunning picture of one of her recent large-scale projects without giving anything away about its lucky owner.
‘I have a huge respect for our beautiful landscape, so the use of natural materials play a huge part’ ‘Our most recent barn renovation just outside Knutsford was for a famous footballer and his lovely family, who wanted us to totally transform their home because it wasn’t working for them as it was. We put a large extension on the barn and totally re-designed the whole of the existing interior, with a really beautiful handmade modern family kitchen, state-of-the-art home automation, a sliding sky-frame door system, really stylish furniture and a beautiful calming interior design. There was even custom-made furniture, luxurious bed linens, champagne in the wine coolers, flowers on all the tables, and scented

candles for move-in day – they were absolutely delighted with it, and the whole renovation has just won the National Award for Renovation & Redevelopment at the UK International Property Awards.’ Quite the accolade – but Janey and her husband don’t intend to rest on their laurels, instead forging ahead to launch Janey Butler Interiors within the next few months and even open a brand-new showroom in Knutsford which will showcase their collaborations with a whole host of top European designers, not to mention all Janey’s own-brand furniture, accessories, lighting and soft furnishings. ‘It’ll be for those discerning clients who appreciate style and true quality and who want that unique Llama Developments character incorporated into their home,’ she explains. And, if her past projects are anything to go by, we don’t doubt it will be everything she’s promised and much, much more. (janeybutlerinteriors.co.uk)

Property Market Update As Savills grows its local team
Mark Holden, head of office at Savills Wilmslow, gives us his steer on the local property market: “The Savills Wilmslow team has been busy selling some of the area’s prime homes in 2014. We look after property from £400,000 to well over the £3million mark across the north west, predominantly in the Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Prestbury, Knutsford and Hale areas. With buyer demand remaining high and in some price brackets even outstripping supply, we are experiencing the best selling market for many years.

TOP TIPS CHESHIRE MAGAZINE.indd 1
The Savills Wilmslow business is growing too, with Andrew Thorpe recently joining us in the residential team as an Associate Director. Andrew will be helping clients with property sales across Cheshire, with a specific focus on properties below £1million. Our team now has a combined experience of 64 years in the local market. We always work closely
with our national and international colleagues to offer unrivalled exposure for our clients’ homes, locating the right buyers wherever they are. So far this year our Wilmslow office has registered 18% more buyers than 2013, many of whom are looking to Cheshire for their next move. This also means we’ve arranged considerably more viewings and completed on more sales when compared to 2013. New agent Andrew Thorpe says: “I was brought up in Cheshire and I’m passionate about living and working in the local area. Joining Savills, which is the only local agent with a global network, has been a fantastic move. I’ve been working in the local property market for over eight years and have successfully sold a wide variety of homes across the Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Knutsford and Hale market. I’m really looking forward to using my expertise to help Savills clients with their next move. Mark adds: “Despite having over 600 offices and associates worldwide, our team’s aim is not to be the biggest, just the best at what we do, as judged by our customers. We combine exceptional service with marketing campaigns tailored to suit each property and to meet the individual needs of our clients”.

The Savills Wilmslow team’s top tips on choosing an agent: • Beware of agents who tell you exactly what you want to hear. Overpromising may win them the instruction but it won’t sell your home. Ideally you want a balanced view of the market, which could mean revising any preconceptions you may have of your home’s value. • Have they done their research? Do they have extra market insight as well as their own opinion? Ask them for comparables and price trends in the area. It will show you they take your home seriously and that they’ll be giving you up to date advice. • Do you have a good rapport with the agent? You’ll be dealing with them a lot - it’s much easier if you have a good relationship from the outset.
• Does the agent have a strong brand locally, nationally, internationally? Will potential buyers trust in its brand?
• Are they able to market your property to a regional, national and international database of buyers over and above the buyers who are looking locally online (which every agent has access to)? • How does the agent present their properties? Do they use professional photographers, floor planners and produce high quality marketing material? All these factors are essential to ensure your property has the broadest market appeal and to ensure that buyers don’t dismiss it from the outset due to poor presentation by the agent.
Savills Wilmslow 6 Water Lane, Wilmslow SK9 5AA 01625 417450 savills.co.uk/wilmslow
• Ask them about their marketing strategy and how it would be tailored for your particular property? Each property is different and it’s important that your agent doesn’t adopt a ‘one size fits all’ view to marketing. • What is your agent’s approach to PR? Are they often quoted in the press as a property expert? Getting positive publicity around your home is one of the most influential ways to market it. You need to make sure they take it seriously. • Likewise, what is their take on social media and new technology? Do they invest in the latest technology, do they have an app, is their website user friendly and help potential buyers to find your property easily?

We’ve lived in Worsley, Wilmslow, Didsbury, Knutsford, Plumley, Didsbury again and now by the river in Chester.’ There’s a big difference though from being a serial mover to being a property developer, especially during the economic downturn. ‘For me, it’s about self-belief and not in an arrogant way. It’s about taking hold of the opportunities presented to you with both hands. And it’s about tackling adversity the same way, with will and determination. Then it’s about luck, help and hard work.’

After school Adele went to RADA, where she met her husband of fifteen years, Matt. I can’t help but wonder if that experience and being on stage has something to do with her self-belief. Adele may appear familiar to you because she starred in a new show in 2005, The Apprentice. ‘I applied on a whim; I thought it was a business documentary. I was one of The Apprentice virgins and had no idea what I was letting myself in for! ‘I have no regrets about taking part. It was a life-changing experience but it made me realise that my family is the most important thing to me. It also made me realise I wanted to really make something of my life.’ Passion and enthusiasm are high in Adele’s character, that and a workaholic nature. ‘I come from a workaholic background. Mum and dad have always worked hard and taken whatever jobs they needed

to in order to survive. It gets on Matt’s nerves but he must be used to it now after twenty-one years!’ Before The Apprentice, Adele worked in her mum and dad’s kitchen showroom in Chorlton, expanding the company. It has been reported that she worked late into the night before her first boy, Ted, was born and sold a kitchen to the midwife. For the birth of her second boy, Ellis, there was just a conservation officer in tow as the plans were in place for Butley Hall. Whilst the work-life balance may be intertwined at times, family is everything to Adele. ‘Work-life balance is all about compromise and I think people are less prepared to compromise today. I still help mum and dad out when I can. Mum’s my best friend. She keeps me grounded and taught me to treat others as I would like to be treated. Good, strong ethics in business and life. For example treating investors’

‘It was a life-changing experience but it made me realise that my family is the most important thing to me’ or clients’ money as if it were your own seems a fair principle but it’s amazing how many people we work with comment on it.’ Back to business, Adele’s latest venture is Lock & Parker, a ‘down-toearth boutique estate agency/ concierge offering to go that extra mile’. Based in Alderley Edge, Adele is hoping to draw on her considerable experience of moving and apply the same will and determination to make this just as much of a success as The Gentry Grooming Co, A&S Kitchens and

Edengate Homes, all of which she works closely on with husband Matt and other family members. ‘I do believe that things happen for a reason. Even at the lowest times and at the bottom of the steepest learning curve, there’s always a positive spin to be found. The best for me is learning experientially. That moment when you look back at what you’ve achieved and realise you’re on the home straight. ‘Success is about recognising a gap in the market and capitalising on it.’
Now for the life part. ‘I love escaping with the family in the caravan to The Lakes or Wales. It’s great, we’re all together, meeting new people and exploring. We’re hoping to get a bigger one so that we can start exploring Europe some more.’ Proud mum, daughter, wife and straight-talking businesswoman, Adele Lock seems to have life sussed; live it well, be true to yourself, cherish your family and believe in yourself. A good mantra to live by for anyone. (lockandparker.co.uk/edengatehomes.com)
ADELE ON STYLE Who is your style icon? I love Victoria Beckham’s taste although I could never fit in to her clothes! I also admire how entrepreneurial she has been in moving away from show business to launch her own branded clothing. Very inspirational!
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Victoria Beckham, Featureflash / Shutterstock.COM; chaneL, 360b / Shutterstock.COM; VICTORIA BECKHAM AW14 COLLECTION; THE ICONIC TIFFANY BOX
And your favourite designer? I love Chanel fashion but also her amazing life story which was quite melancholy at times. It teaches you that often you have to pay the price for success. What’s your favourite item of clothing? That would be my St John poncho coat that I bought in Chicago. It’s beautiful and still going strong after seven years. It hasn’t dated either. What’s on your wish list this Christmas? I hope I will get a new Tiffany bracelet but that remains to be seen!

GET SET TO SELL NOW
AND BEAT THE FESTIVE RUSH
WITH January a prime month for people putting their homes on the market, experts are urging sellers to get in there first and beat the competition.
Last year, property website Rightmove reported a 20% increase in those looking for a new home between Christmas and New Year, with its page views on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day reaching up to 38 million*. As a result, Redrow is recommending that those who want to secure a brand new home in the beautiful Cheshire village of Farndon at the start of 2015 seriously think about putting their existing property on the market pre-Christmas. It’s a message backed by John Jarvis, managing director of North West agent Property Perspective. He believes that with so many vendors waiting until January to put their home on the market, a lot of the housebuying interest could be missed. “Our enquiries and sales make January one of our busiest months of the year. People leaving it until the new year to market their property are certainly missing out as enquiries are heavy over the Christmas break. In reality, waiting until January to take the first steps means the property is not fully marketed until mid/late January, therefore missing out on when the enquiries are peaking,” he said. It makes now the perfect time for vendors who would like to buy a brand new family home at Farndon Meadow to sign up to Redrow’s Mastermove scheme, allowing them to take full advantage of the festive boom. reach of both Chester and Wrexham Farndon Mastermove takes away all the stresses of Meadow boasts a range of four-bedroom selling, ideal in the busy run up to Christmas, detached properties, which all hail from the because Redrow does all of the hard work. housebuilder’s popular Heritage Collection, Customers have their property valued and, priced from £369,995. his significant house is Grade II listed and dates back to 1597 in parts, with timber framing mainly encased in mellow Cheshire red brick in about 1912. At about this time the side and rear wings were added. The house is encompassed entirely by 28 ½ acres of its own grounds, giving a high degree of privacy, with the front of the house facing almost due south. Releasing your potential
in five easy steps! For people over age 55, looking to release equity from their property, equity release is now in a period of unprecedented growth and for good reason. Such schemes have undergone much innovation in recent years, culminating in a range of products which put consumers in control of how they run their plans. Below is a 5-point guide to how you benefit from this new breed of lifetime mortgage schemes.
1 Choice
1 2 3 4 5
2 Control
3 Manage
4 Balance
5 Inheritance
Equity Release Supermarket now has access to new and exciting ‘interest servicing’ lifetime mortgage plans as well as the traditional roll-up schemes.
New lifetime mortgage plans now help control your inheritance by having the ability to maintain a level, or even reducing equity release balance.
With voluntary repayment plans such as the Aviva Flexi and Hodge Lifetime mortgage, the management of the balance is totally yours.
The equity release balance along with property value determine your final inheritance. Voluntary or monthly payments help reduce the balance, thus increasing your inheritance.
The lower the mortgage balance is, the greater the potential inheritance. Our range of plans help you choose, control and manage the final balance and ultimate inheritance.
To benefit from a free no obligation initial consultation, please call 0800 783 9652 or email info@equityreleasesupermarket.co.uk for further details on our range of services. www.equityreleasesupermarket.co.uk These are lifetime mortgages and home reversion plans. To understand their features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. There will be a fee for mortgage advice. This will depend upon your circumstances, but we estimate that it will be ÂŁ895. BEAUTIFUL THINGS
exotic influence Designers Guild has released its ever-vibrant autumn collection. The initial stimulus for the Madhuri range was Indian and central Asian costumes from the 18th and 19th centuries – reflected through an energetic combination of colour and texture – as well as the bold strokes of a Howard Hodgkin painting. The brand has built its reputation on merging historical and contemporary themes with designs that bring together delicately drawn flowers with structured shapes and bright bursts of colour with softer shades of grey and blue. It’s our go-to interiors specialist, season after season. (designersguild.com)
