What do you get when you put comedians Joe Lycett, James Acaster, Kerry Godliman and Ed Gamble in a room together? We don’t know either, but we’re guessing that the result is a whole lot of laughs. Hosted by Gamble (of Mock the Week fame), the show is headlined by Lycett and supported by Acaster and Godliman. Lycett is known for his well-timed delivery and cutting quips – he’s been compared to Julian Clary in the past – so will put on a good show in this intimate, perfect-for-comedy-acts setting. And what could be better than seeing four comedians for the price of one? (Yes, we know five would be better.)

Celebrate the Queen’s official birthday in good company at the W4 Christ Church Summer Fete. This community event will take place on the Green with a range of activities, including games, crafts, a bouncy castle, a jazz café and a soft play area. In addition to these festivities, there will be plenty of top-notch grub to sample: cake stalls, a barbecue sizzling with goodies and Pimm’s for the grown-ups. Take a stroll around the various offerings and maybe pick up a couple of toys and books, or even a plant or two. Pray for sunshine everyone, as this looks to be a fantastic family event.

While going to a stationary jazz club makes for an enjoyable evening, it’s not quite as exciting as going to one that transports you from Chiswick Pier down the Thames to Westminster and back again. The Midsummer Jazz Cruise is an extremely popular event that provides attendees with a sumptuous two-course dinner that will be served by Butlers Catering, and a fullystocked bar on board from which to buy refreshments. The Anacousis jazz band will serenade the trip while you enjoy the sights of London’s riversides transpose from day into night.

27 June Gin the mood

1 & 8 July Comedic gold

2-3 July Eat, drink and be merry

Settle down for story time, gin lovers. Portobello Road Gin is making an appearance at The Defector’s Weld this month to give a talk about gin and its history – from its very roots up until its modern day (and outrageously popular) version. The history of gin is fairly miserable and you can find out why with this knowledgeable lot, and if the talk of this clear spirit gets you hankering for a glass, fear not; you’ll get a gin and tonic on arrival, a refreshing Tom Collins during the talk and a tasting session of some of Portobello Road Gin’s offerings, along with some of its limited edition specials.

Bill Bailey, a face familiar with many Hammersmith residents, will be making a fleeting visit to the Eventim Apollo during his months-long tour, Limboland. With his well-known wit, intelligence and laid-back delivery, Bailey will discuss the gap between how we imagine our lives and how they actually are – life limbo, as it were. He’ll have audiences roaring with laughter as he recounts a disastrous family trip to Norway to see the Northern Lights, and he’ll contemplate the true meaning of happiness. And, of course, there will be some humorous songs and special Bailey music.

Grab your knives and forks, this addition to the Ealing Summer Festivals programme is a real corker. Eat Drink Ealing is a two-day foodie hot pot overflowing with edible and quaffable delights. Described as a ‘walking banquet’, festival-goers can sample a huge range of delicious and curious treats and tipples from near and far, curated by the Eat Drink team. And when you’re so full you couldn’t possible meander any further down the lanes, take a break on a conveniently placed hay bale and enjoy some of the music and arts entertainment, which will be distracting you from your growing belly throughout both days.

To celebrate the launch of the London Dungeons’ new show Escape The Great Fire, The Art of Dining, a pop-up dining series, is hosting a five-course meal inspired by the new event. The Fire & Feast dinner will lead guests on a journey through The Great Fire of London by means of food, theatre, music and design in the dungeon. Greeted by a welcome cocktail, the courses to follow revolve around the theme of fire and guests can expect to see dishes such as Sichuanstyle beef ribs in fire sauce and burnt butter cake with burnt white chocolate and stewed gooseberries. Local mum Hayley Wedgbury recently led a campaign to raise funds for a disabilityfriendly park in Wormholt Park in Shepherd’s Bush. She raised £7,000 to go towards a wheelchair-accessible swing for her nine year-old daughter who lives with cerebral palsy. Hammersmith and Fulham Council then matched the sum and also installed a wheelchair-accessible roundabout and trampoline, along with play equipment for children with sensory impairments.

AND THE BELLS OF ST CLEMENTS

Turnham Green Terrace is home to a brand new greengrocers called Lemons and Limes, which offers a little bit more than just potatoes and broccoli. There’s a huge selection of different fruits and vegetables available, from the unusual to downright exotic, and as for the familiar farmyard produce – well, there are plenty of varieties of those available too.

SPREADING THE LOVE

Cedars of Lebanon trees are now dotted around the borough of Hounslow thanks to a conservation project taking place at Chiswick House and Gardens. Cedrus libani have been planted in different parks in a bid to preserve the species by extending where they grow, which has been orchestrated by an English Heritage project. Five new trees have been added to the borough’s parks, which have been taken from two cloned trees in the grounds of Chiswick House.

Taken from the Oscar-winning film, Peter Flannery’s play will leave audiences gripping the armrests and holding their breath, such is the suspense running throughout it. It’s set during the summer of 1936 in Moscow and focuses on a family that spans four generations who are taking breakfast on the veranda, bickering and squabbling as usual until news reaches them that tanks are destroying the villagers’ wheat fields. A mysterious stranger appears who had disappeared years earlier, and questions begin to be asked. It’s a domestic and political drama with dark comedic undertones that will have you on the edge of your seat. £14, £12 concessions, £7 under-16s and students, see website for cheaper dates, 24-25, 28-30 June and 1-2 July at 7.45pm, 26 June at 2.30pm. by this, the Journal sat down with director Georgina Burns to talk about it. She begins by telling us about the production quality – “it’s very important to me” – and says that: “It’s a professional set with proper lighting, sound and costumes,” she enthuses. The key to Beauty and the Beast Jr is that it’s not a kids’ show – it’s a fully-fledged production that just happens to be performed by young cast members. “They don’t really get nervous,” Georgina tells me after I ask whether the young cast find it daunting. “And we’re so well-rehearsed so they know exactly what they’re doing.” What about the parents, do they enjoy it? “Oh yes,” smiles Georgina “We get a lot of very good feedback.” Anyone who knows The Questors will know that it’s not exactly a small theatre, but this doesn’t intimidate the cast. Beauty and the Beast Jr is a slick, entertaining musical that will have audiences calling encore for hours. £16, 16-19 June, see website for show times, Questors Theatre, 12 Mattock Lane, W5 5BQ, 020 8567 5184, questors.org.uk. You know nothing, Dr. Faustus Kit Harington makes his return to the stage in the haunting remake of Doctor Faustus. Here’s what Emily Adams thought

Jenna Russell and Kit Harington in Doctor FaustuS

Russell’s blunt and sarcastic Mephistopheles is the standout performance as she slyly tricks Faustus into eternal damnation. The whole play is a confusing mishmash of styles, flitting between fantasy and reality but this only serves to strengthen Faustus’ tortured mind. ame of Thrones fans looking for a slice of Lord Commander Jon Snow are in for one hell of a shock in Jamie Lloyd’s remake of Doctor Faustus. Star of the show Kit Harington is caught between right and wrong in this intensely graphic and gruesome remake. In this updated version of Christopher Marlowe’s 1592 play, including revised scenes from Colin Teevan, Faustus embodies an illusionist who signs his life away to the devil for fame, fortune and superhuman powers. The play follows Faustus as he battles with his inner demons, expertly played by a haunting supporting cast, while he is led astray by Mephistopheles (Jenna Russell), the fallen angel. With blood, gore, sex and violence, this is not for the faint-hearted or even fans of Harington’s previous work, although I do wonder if a stage production of Game of Thrones would look something like this. Just minutes in and we’re confronted nudity, vomit and terrifyingly demonic characters, but it’s oddly gripping. Harington is certainly succeeding in drawing in the crowds with his celebrity status, luring them into a false sense of security with his charming good looks before launching into bed with the devil. Jenna

Kit Harington in Doctor Faustus Running at the Duke of York’s Theatre London until 25 June 2016

is a hallucinogenic feel to it as lights flash aggressively and fake canned laughter fills the stage. At times, it’s so intense I have no idea what is happening on stage, as the cast look lost in their own surreal fantasy world, but I can’t quite look away. There’s a dash of humour here and there, offering light relief in among gruesome violence and bloodshed, including an unusual rendition of Meat Loaf ’s Bat Out of Hell by Mephistopheles at the beginning of Act Two. There are small nods to Harington’s own celebrity status and his casting in this play, as he stands shirtless pouting at the audience, flicking his trademark curly locks around. As Faustus rises to fame he comments on fans only wanting to see the star of the show regardless of show itself, a comment that clearly rings true for a large majority of this audience. This is not a comfortable play to watch; Harington plays his role with such intense emotion from beginning to end, it’s a draining few hours but I’m as impressed by his admirable efforts as I am chilled by the play itself. It’s gritty, daring and explicitly graphic, but it’s something you need to see to believe. Doctor Faustus is at Duke of York’s theatre until 25 June, dukeofyorkstheatre.co.uk

17 June BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT

Directed by Malcolm D. Lee Starring Ice Cube, Regina Hall, Anthony Anderson and Nicki Minaj Calvin’s barbershop has been the subject of two previous films and in this third offering, the crew come together to change the fortunes of the neighbourhood they live in after it takes a turn for the worse. The two previous comedies have revolved around social life in the barbershop, which is set in the South Side of Chicago and launched the careers of various stars now familiar in so many households.

released in 2013. It quickly became the second-highest grossing original horror film (The Exorcist takes the top spot for that accolade) and was received well by critics and reviewers alike – so there’s high hopes for the second instalment. In this followup, characters Ed and Lorraine Warren (two real paranormal investigators) head to Enfield in North London to solve the case of a reported poltergeist that’s haunting a council flat. Because of the true story nature of the plot, these films tend to be more tense and dramatic, so make sure you take a blanket to cower under when it all gets too much.

The secret life of pets

Directed by Chris Renaud and Yarrow Cheney Starring Ellie Kemper, Jenny Slate, Eric Stonestreet and Louis C.K. Max is a dog that’s used to the high life – he’s the favourite pet in the Manhattan apartment in which he lives, but that all changes when his owner brings home a sloppy mongrel called Duke. Although they don’t get on at first, the two have to put their squabbles aside to deal with an angry bunny who is building an army of abandoned pets to rain terror on happy, owned pets. Gulp.

interview

A Monumental Opera-Tion Paul Potts gives us a glimpse into his operatic world and treats us to a flavour of what we can expect from his performance in Tosca Tell us a bit about what you’ve been up to recently – how’s touring treating you?

Who are your influences?

José Carreras, for whom I’ve performed twice in Germany. He’s a great singer and person. Other influences are Mario Lanza, Carlo Bergonzi and Fritz Wunderlich.

So far this year I’ve toured Germany twice and I’m about to tour South Korea for the third time, so I have been getting about, as well as performing in Japan and Austria. I’ve already done more than 30 shows in 2016.

How is the UK opera scene at the moment? Do you think it receives enough attention?

Have any countries surprised you with their love of opera?

In a world of austerity and budget cuts, I think that opera often has to justify itself to people as having relevance. Unfortunately it’s still seen by many as elitist and exclusive to the rich, and some critics also target socalled crossover music saying that it doesn’t bring people to ‘real’ opera. Of course, crossover music doesn’t bring all its listeners to full operas. People will listen to what

Many countries have a different form of opera, particularly in Asia – in Korea, both western and Korean opera exist side by side. They are very different since Koreans form their 15 vowels differently to the way we do with our five. It’s challenging to perform a Korean song because many of the vowels are formed with a closed throat, meaning I have to make adjustments to the vowel.

moves them, and makes them feel involved. Crossover certainly does encourage many people to try and explore opera and classical music in a way they might not have previously. At the same time, opera at Covent Garden and The Coliseum isn’t just for the rich. Ticket prices start at very reasonable rates that are comparable to any other show in London in many cases, even cheaper. You don’t need to wear a tuxedo – I watched La bohème some years ago in jeans and a shirt, and I wasn’t the only one. See website for event details including ticket costs, available packages and various performance times. You’re performing in Tosca at Chiswick House, is this a personal favourite of yours?

I’m something of a Giacomo Puccini freak. I have several recordings of every one of his operas and several recordings of rarities, like songs he wrote as a student. Much of this music would end up in his operas, and Puccini was frequently criticised for selfplagiarising. Tosca is something of a tour de force; emotionally it’s quite manipulative, something that was levelled against Puccini as a criticism. I see it as more of a skill.

Have you ever played the role of Cavaradossi before?

I have sung the arias before, but never the whole role. In an amateur production in North London in 2003, I played the role of Des Grieux in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, but this is my professional debut in a great role. Cavaradossi is a reluctant hero who would really rather be comfortable living with his passion of painting and fending off the insecurities of his lover, Tosca.

The best thing is that it isn’t a job – it’s a way of life, and one that I enjoy immensely. Plus I get to explore places I could have only dreamed of going to.

Hammersmith staple Eat Tokyo has recently opened another site in Covent Garden, bringing its tally up to six shops. Renowned for its authentic Japanese cuisine, the company has other outlets in Golders Green, Notting Hill, Soho and Holborn. CAROL GREENAWAY

LOUISE RICHARDS

Carol makes domestic and small sculptural pieces that are beautifully crafted and presented to the highest standard. From cheese plates to salad bowls, gravy jugs to cutlery drainers, Carol’s work is both striking and functional. “My pottery studio is at the back of my house, which makes showing my pots stress-free and it means visitors can see where and how I work,” she tells me. I ask her what it is about Artists at Home that she likes: “I generally get positive feedback and I can try out new lines of work and see how they sell,” she says in response. What does it mean to her? “The whole experience is great fun and a way of meeting up with new neighbours and old friends.”

I’m lucky enough to see Louise’s studio where she makes her intriguing enamel creations. She shows me the labourintensive process of going from machine to desk, how delicate the colouring of each piece is and how long it takes for her to create the smallest of pieces. It is a labour of love, and it certainly pays off. As an enamellist, Louise enjoys talking to the people who visit her during Artists at Home, because she believes it gives each piece a bit more personality – to know exactly where it’s come from and how much work goes into it makes it that bit more special.

DEBBIE PEARCE

Oil paintings are Debbie’s forte, not least because mistakes are easily rectifiable, she tells me with a laugh. “Oil paint is very forgiving,” she smiles. I ask her whether she has always been an artist and she shakes her head. “I lived near a painting teacher in Brook Green,” she begins. “One day I asked if I could go along to a class and that was my first encounter with oil painting.” Her subject preference goes through phases – it has previously been boats, but now she’s content creating fruit and veg paintings in both normal and pop-art styles. “I see it as more of a hobby,” she tells me, “but I’ve got some commissions in the pipeline and people are getting in touch.” And just what will she have on display when people drop by her flat in Shepherd’s Bush? “Whatever I’ve got room for!” Goldhawk Road, W12 8EN, online at debbiepearce.artistsathome.net

ith 71 artists, 57 studios and three square miles involved, you can’t really be forgiven for not knowing about this fantastic celebration of local artists and their many varied works. Dotted around the W4, W6 and W12 postcodes, it’s a wide-ranging extravaganza that gets people to lace up their walking boots or hunker down on their bicycle seat and get their map out in order to experience a lot of art in just three days. The best thing about it? It’s in artists’ homes and studios, so you can see where the magic happens and get to talk to the masterminds and craftspeople behind the creations – but you can also buy art at studio price or order a commission. Visit the website for a full and detailed list of artists taking part. To provide just a small flavour of what to expect, here are some artists who have stopped spinning their pottery wheels, put down their paintbrushes and pushed the precious gemstones aside to tell the Journal what’s so great about Artists at Home and what it means to them.

She chuckles when she tells me: “I had a commission from Australia, and when I had finished it, it was quite hard to send it away.” This is Louise’s tenth year being involved in Artists at Home and should be a definite stop-off on anyone’s tour.

Benham & Reeves goes on-site at Kew Bridge

Benham & Reeves Residential Lettings, which claims to be London’s fastest growing letting agency, is opening up shop on-site at St George’s Kew Bridge scheme in west London. This is B&R’s second branch opening this year, and takes the tally to 15; it’s now London’s largest independent lettings agency. It’s all part of the corporate rental specialists’ “ambitious expansion plan”, which involves opening branches within some of the capital’s biggest property developments. The firm has opened on-site branches in major developments in Surrey Quays, Wapping and Fulham Reach in Hammersmith in the last 12 months, with each new office plugged into four international offices to channel overseas investor enquiries – although the branches will continue to take on instructions for both period and new build properties within the wider areas. Nick Hubbard is in charge of the new Kew Bridge outpost; he previously covered the same area from B&R’s Ealing office. Anita Mehra, managing director of Benham & Reeves Residential Lettings, says: “We are very pleased to be London’s fastest growing letting agency but it’s not about numbers. Our priority is, and has always been, to go

the extra mile for our landlords and tenants. Our 50 years of experience in the industry has shown us that it is not enough to simply be a voice at the end of the phone line or to have a well-designed website. We underscore our commitment to offer the best service by putting our well-trained staff in prominent locations where investors or tenants know we are on the spot to help.”

Purple Patches: CBRE tears up Lizzie Line forecasts as house prices steam ahead

Prices around Elizabeth Line (née Crossrail) stations have already smashed expectations, says CBRE, leading the firm to overhaul its original forecasts. Europe’s largest infrastructure project will cut journey times into central London by 15 minutes on average and has already had a massive impact on house prices. The firm has worked out that a 10 per cent reduction in commuting times can ramp up values by as much as six per cent, and since Crossrail received the go-ahead, CBRE says prices around host stations have already rocketed by 31 per cent over the wider market (just a touch above the original estimate of a total increase of 13 per cent by 2018). As a result, the forecasts have been roundly

revised and average prices around Crossrail stations are now expected to increase by 3.3 per cent per annum – over and above wider house price growth – until the full effect of the new line has been realised. In 2013, the total projected increase was being put at 2.5 per cent per annum. By the time Crossrail is operational in 2018, adds the report, it will have added up to £35billion to the residential property sector around the 37 stations, with prices around hubs seeing an extraordinary average increase of 41.2 per cent since the project was first announced (£133,000 per property). A 3.8 per cent per annum price growth over and above wider house price inflation is being predicted for the western section, where journey times are set to be reduced by an average of 25 minutes. Acton Main Line could well hit 6.3 per cent per annum, says the firm. The report adds that the full impact will only emerge a year or so after the line opens in 2018 (by which time even the punchiest of predictions could end up looking conservative at this rate).

The Journal heads to Marsh & Parsons’ Askew Road office to find out what the summer months mean for the property market

mark hustwit

C

josh moutray-read

hatting with Mark Hustwit, senior sales manager, and Josh MoutrayRead, lettings manager, it’s easy to see why the Marsh & Parsons office on Askew Road has had such a successful kick-start to the year – these two are wonderfully passionate about what they do. The team members are active within the Askew Village community and local residents enjoy Marsh & Parsons’ community focus. Josh tells me: “We get on really well with the residents around here – we often bump into people on the street who will stop and say hello to us.” Mark adds to this: “There’s a big community feel here and we are a real part of that. The Marsh & Parsons team supported more than 60 events last year, and we get involved with all of these. We’re set to do more this year, like the Southfield Primary fayres and Askew Road Community Association’s Christmas fayre. And previous buyers, sellers or renters also often pop in and let us know how they’re getting on.” The stamp duty changes for second homes and buy-to-lets was enforced on 1 April and Mark says it assisted Marsh & Parsons, both as a whole company and the sole office, in reaching a record-breaking number of transactions in March. “We saw a massive surge in people trying to exchange before the deadline,” he continues. I ask Josh how the year has been so far, and what he’s expecting next. He explains to me that it’s a rather cyclical market. “Around Christmas and New Year, everyone is preoccupied, but when January rolls around,

Wingate Road, W6, guide price £1,150 PER WEEK

everyone starts thinking about changing things up,” he starts. “We are really busy from June to September as people are moving in time with schools. Also, I think the weather has a lot to do with it – I know it sounds strange. When the sun is shining and people are in a good mood, everywhere looks better and people are drawn towards properties with outside space.” The Marsh & Parsons brand was built around its local knowledge and it’s a key asset on which they still pride themselves – and this, of course, extends to its Askew Road office. Knowing how to find the right buyer or tenant for a property is crucial and with its extensive expertise of the area, Mark and Josh are able to get their clients the best results. The team is able to do this by keeping an eye on the changes in social scenes across the capital’s boroughs. This is also helped by Marsh & Parsons’ unique open register policy – which means that all the offices work intrinsically with each other by exposing both sales and lettings properties to buyers and tenants right across their network of offices.

“April highlighted the benefit of this policy,” Josh tells me. “I completed deals with various people who originally registered with our Earls Court, Holland Park, Camden, Notting Hill and Chelsea offices.” With around eight Tube stations nearby, plenty of green space, a wonderful community feel, an abundance of coffee shops and incredible value for money, there’s no wonder Askew Village is a great place to consider living or investing. 120 Askew Road, W12 9BL, 020 8102 0123, marshandparsons.co.uk
