17 July SIGN OF THE TIMES
Get to Topshop in Westfield this month for a new pair of sunglasses, shoes and a cake or two. Flavourtown Bakery will be in the store until 8 July serving delicious mini and regular-sized cupcakes from its varied menu, as well as its award-winning brownies and slices of its enormous cakes. We’d make a beeline for the rainbow cake and a brownie, but we wouldn’t complain if we could only get our hands on a mini cupcake or two. Each little treat is lovingly made by artisan bakers and decorators, so they’ll look as good as they taste. Just don’t get any on that new summery top you’ve wanted to wear for ages…
Fat Gay Vegan has teamed up with The Old Ship W6 to bring you a vegan beer festival for the fourth time in the event’s history. This year will be much bigger than previous occasions and will make the most of the fresh air outside and fantastic views alongside the Thames. What’s more, The Old Ship W6 is turning itself 100 per cent vegan for the event and the adjoining park on the riverside will be filled with marquees selling beer, cider and wine with various food tents thrown in for good measure. For a day of vegan brilliance and top-notch alcoholic beverages, make your way to the water’s edge in Hammersmith and make the most of a summer’s afternoon.
Mobile Phone Show comes to The Tabard Theatre for one night only to mock the way we use our phones and social media, and how much we rely on them throughout the day. It’s a show that is aimed at those who have ever ‘hashtagged, retweeted or pinned with pride’, and there’ll be plenty of opportunity to take a lot of theatre stage selfies. To some it might sound like the worst thing to happen to theatre, but to a lot of people it’ll be a fun, relaxed performance that provides an opportunity to have a chuckle and smile for an evening. We think that sounds like a perfectly acceptable excuse to go and see it, don’t you?

22 July – 7 August FAIR IS FAIR
2, 3 and 4 August ON THE BIG SCREEN
Rolling into Chiswick House and Gardens this month is Giffords Circus, with its brand-new show The Painted Wagon. Billed as a “whipcrackin’, hell-raisin’ wild west extravaganza”, the show is written by critically acclaimed stage and screen comedy director, Cal McCrystal. Giffords Circus has been around since 2000 and is renowned for its eclectic circus-theatre fusion style, experimenting by weaving theatre, opera, dance and puppetry into a 90-minute performance in circus form. You can expect a live orchestra, clowns, acrobats, horses and farmyard animals – what else could you possibly ask for?
Shepherd’s Bush Green hosts another of George Irvin’s fabulous funfairs from late July. It’s free entry (great news for those who have been pulled along unwillingly) and tokens cost £1.20 each or £10 for 10. There’s also a charity wristband day that offers unlimited riding – we hope you’ve got the stomach for such a day – on 28 July and 4 August. It’s a classic way to enjoy a few hours of ridiculous fun, a bit of screaming and genuine terror and thrills galore. There’s also a few opportunities to bounce around on the inflatable activities too, so it’s not all high-flying thrill seeking.
Gatsby’s fantastic house is used to hosting huge parties that go on all night and feature only the trendiest and most glamourous people, so what better place to watch The Great Gatsby than in the grounds of Chiswick House and Gardens? The Luna Cinema returns to the site for three nights; The Great Gatsby screening is on 2 August, with Spectre and Grease being shown on 3 and 4 August respectively. Whether you’re after something fast-paced and exciting or you fancy a good old-fashioned sing-a-long to a musical classic, there’s something for everyone.

To mark 350 years since the Great Fire of London, the Museum of London is exhibiting rare artefacts like burnt padlocks and keys, and giving visitors the chance to get a bit hands on, too. The Great Fire of London is a huge marking point in the capital’s history, since it brought its residents together to rebuild the infrastructure and create an empowered sense of community. Chiswick is now home to the second studio space of Shavata Brows & Beauty. Situated on the High Road, the beauty parlour will offer treatments such as threading, tints and waxing, as well as give advice and after-treatment care. There are Shavata stores across the UK, but the Chiswick site is the newest London branch and will likely prove popular with residents looking for a professional, friendly service. YOU WANT A PIAZZA ME?
The area outside of Chiswick train station between Old Station House pub and the shops at the end of Grove Park Road may soon become a piazza. Trees have already been planted along the railway fences to create a private, more enclosed area and local community association Grove Park Group is attempting to get Hounslow Council to agree to a widening of the pavements and replace the area’s tarmac with paving to create an Italian-inspired piazza with café tables on it.

The magic
of cinema
It’s raining in July? Oh well, let’s go and see a film
1 July CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE
© 2016 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.
Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber Starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Amy Ryan, Aaron Paul and Danielle Nicolet The world of international espionage is a foreign concept to mild mannered accountant (Hart), but when an old school friend of his ( Johnson) gets in touch through Facebook, he finds himself lured into something a little more exciting than pushing pencils and adding up numbers all day. This action-filled blockbuster proved popular on the first weekend of its release in the USA, and similar success is expected here – the two main cast members are comedy favourites the world over.
– and everyone went mad. Saunders is one of Britain’s best-loved and most respected writers and comedians, and Absolutely Fabulous is regarded as one of the best British sitcoms of all time. Expect falling out of cabs, the death of Kate Moss and a proper boozy theme throughout the entire film. We’ve got out tickets booked.
6 July THE LEGEND OF TARZAN
Directed by David Yates Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie, Samuel L Jackson Tarzan has become used to his life in London – rather than foraging and hunting, his meals now hail from the finest restaurants in the city, and his sleeping arrangements are somewhat more traditional – but this is all turned upside down when he’s called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the
activities at a mining encampment. Liveaction interpretations of classic animations seem to be the flavour of the moment, and this all-star cast will bring Tarzan to life like you’ve never seen before.
15 July ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE
Directed by Michael Thurmeier and Galen Chu Starring Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary The plot to this latest Ice Age film is utterly bizarre, but we think that’s a good thing. Scrat is in pursuit of his always-out-of-reach acorn when he is catapulted off of Earth and into space, setting off a series of cosmic events that transform and threaten the planet. Manny, Sid, Diego and the rest of the herd leave in search of safety in a bid to avoid inevitable peril, all while providing lots of laughs, touching moments and action along the way.

1 July ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE
Directed by Mandie Fletcher Starring Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks and June Whitfield “Do you know what a pariah is?” asks the exhausted Saffy. “Yes,” replies Eddy before pausing, “it’s a fish.” This ridiculous exchange appears in the trailer for the hotlyanticipated Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, so who knows what other comical delights await in the actual film? Jennifer Saunders had been teasing about bringing Eddy and Patsy back for several years before officially announcing that the film was in production

15 July STURGILL SIMPSON
Sturgill Simpson’s latest album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth is billed as being a ‘rare record that traverses the entire world, both musically and lyrically.’ It’s the country singer’s third album and Simpson wants to show it to the world so that everyone can bask in its ethereal glow. If you want to know what Simpson’s music sounds like, we’d suggest going along and finding out for yourself – call it research, if you will, only it’s the fun kind. It ought to be good though, because in 2014 Simpson was listed on Rolling Stone’s 50 best new albums list at a respectable 18th place. We love Jill Scott – she’s not only a threetime GRAMMY® award-winning singersongwriter, New York Times best-selling poet and critically acclaimed actress, but she’s also the founder of Blues Babe, a foundation that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support minority students pursuing further education and college degrees. Her TV and film credits include The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? but it’s her soulful R&B music that she’s wowing crowds

The Madness frontman (real name Graham McPherson) takes to the stage this month to perform a one-man show that features comedy, moving tales of his past and, of course, some music. New neighbours

Local restaurateur Lorraine Angliss talks about her newest venture, Little Bird
find the right site but I’m so excited that it’ll be open imminently.
Why did you choose Grove Park as the location?
I own the lease and had a previous successful restaurant. It was time to come back and create something wonderful for the good people of Chiswick.
What’s the best thing about being a restaurateur?
Knowing that I have happy staff as well as happy customers.
Tell me about the team at Little Bird – who’s heading up the kitchen?
What was the inspiration behind Little Bird?
I’ve done the glitz and glam and the vintagechic before, so I’m ready for something a little calmer. Little Bird is going to be a cocktail haven of natural beauty and elegance. This area needed somewhere for locals to unwind without having to travel to the High Road. It will be natural, organic and relaxing, with grazing food.
How is it different from Annie’s and Rock and Rose?
It’s been almost 10 years since I opened my last restaurant. Little Bird has been designed for easy eating with a cool vibe interior.
How long had you been thinking about opening something new?
Opening a bar is a desire I’ve had for a long time – something different with a focus on style and pleasure. It’s taken me a while to

Our head chef Michelle has a superlative CV and her cooking skills have been honed in iconic restaurants across the globe from San Francisco to Australia, from France to London. She has worked in Michelin-starred kitchens, both as a senior sous chef at St John Restaurant and as a chef de partie at The River Café. Michelle lives in W4. Adam, my amazing mixologist who works at Rock & Rose in Richmond has created the most beautiful cocktail menu and I can’t wait for everyone to sample it. Chris is our new general manager, who will truly make you feel special at Little Bird, as will the whole team.
Do you enjoy the neighbourhood aspect to your restaurants?
I absolutely love the neighbourhood aspect – I could open anywhere in the world but I choose to open locally.

Headmasters Danielle Pritchard is blown away by Headmasters’ latest blow-dry treatment
I
fly into Headmasters in Ealing somewhat dishevelled from the heat of the Central Line, though conveniently this is just a stone’s throw away from the station. I’m welcomed warmly by a member of staff who relieves me of my coat as a settle down with a cup of tea and a biscuit. As my hair is shampooed, conditioned and downright cosseted with a tailored Kérastase Elixir Ultime 24 Carat Ritual, a sumptuous potion of oils is massaged into my hair, which is then covered with a hot towel for 10 minutes to seal in the treatment. After my stint relaxing in the massage chair, everything is washed off and I’m ushered back to my original position in front of the mirror.
formula makes even the most rebellious tresses soft and manageable. He’s also applied the Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum to condition my hair, and combined, these vegan products work absolute wonders. Continuing to prove his prowess in wizardry, Marcelo casts a spell over my head with the help of a hairdryer, and my barnet is transformed into a waterfall of blonde billowing waves. I feel super chic and elegant, and even though I trip out of the front door as I leave, nothing can ruffle my composure as I strut home. A sumptuous potion of oils is massaged into my hair The salon’s manager Marcelo glides over and gets to work – I’ve selected The Undone Blow-Dry from their 2016 collection, but Marcelo tailors the look to my hair type and colour. He chats away to me easily as I warn him that my mane has a habit of becoming somewhat matted – my head plays host to a vast bird’s nest complete with runaway tendrils. However, a few swift spritzes and hairbrush flicks and the comb is gliding through my hair with astonishing ease. Genuinely shocked, I ask him what this sorcery is and Marcelo informs me that he simply used the Paul Mitchell Ultimate Colour Repair Triple Rescue, which surprisingly contains quinoa. This magical

We all know what it’s like to buy a gym membership, only to be so rushed-off-yourfeet busy that three months have flown by and you’ve not been once. The recently opened Tribeca Studios harnesses a different approach – buy a pack of five, 10 or 20 credits, and choose from more than 50 classes per week at a time that suits you. Inspired by the boutique studios of New York City, Tribeca focuses in ‘doing more of what makes you happy’, but without having to deal with 12-month contracts or sign-up fees in order to do so. Suitable for both beginners and gym bunnies, this is an innovation for west London, with signature classes set in a suitably NYC-esque environment, complete with full amenities, high-tech electronic wristband sign-in and locker system and healthy vending machines. Chiswick and the chocolate

Belgium is famous for its chocolate, beer and fashion designers, but what happens when all of that is mixed together? Michael Terrance finds out at L’Appetit Fou
T
urnham Green Terrace is as busy as ever when I arrive at L’Appetit Fou. I’m welcomed warmly by shop manager Hannelore Nuijens and owner Edward Cloet, and they present the ingredients that make up my beer and chocolate pairing. I eye it up from a distance and with suspicion – wine and chocolate? Normal. Chocolate and other types of chocolate? Perfectly acceptable. But beer and chocolate? I’m dubious, but since I enjoy both things (usually in excessive quantities), I let all my inhibitions go and dive in to a very Belgian activity.
With hints of fig and raisin, it harmonises with the milk and dark chocolate Florentines The first bottle to be opened is Leffe Brune (brown) – a beer that’s sharp and full-bodied, deep in colour with a very subtle sweetness. Edward and Hannelore have teamed this beer up with a Guérande (salted caramel) and a vanilla caramel chocolate. They’re both exceptional and Edward has a sudden thought and brings me out another, saltier salted caramel, which I think matches the beer perfectly and improves my afternoon greatly. Next up is a blonde beer: La Chouffe. It’s

fruity with a slight tickle of spice in it, and the back notes are citrusy and refreshing. It’s a fabulously drinkable beer and comes with two truffles (one raspberry and one dark chocolate). The refreshing brew cuts through the rich intensity of the truffles and I claim yet another victory for Edward’s pairing, although I’d praise him if he offered me a warm can of Stella and a bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk. Grimbergen Dubbel is my third tasting – with hints of fig and raisin, it harmonises with the milk and dark chocolate Florentines served alongside as though the two were destined to be together. Finally, it comes to Omer, which is a highfermentation beer that leads with fruit flavours and finishes with a slight bite of bitterness. Two lemon chocolates come with it – palet lemon and coeur citron – and the pairing makes for a nice pallet cleanser to finish the session off. I leave satiated and with a sense of smug pleasure at the fact I’ve learned something new and interesting. Who knows, next time someone offers me a Twirl or a Curly Wurly, I might be able to tell them which beer it’d go best with. 4 Turnham Green Terrace, W4 1QP, 020 8747 8846, lappetitfou.co.uk
choc and chic L’Appetit Fou is also home to a new collaboration: Belgian fashion designer Chris Janssens’ line is stocked in the shop, and her pieces are ready for the summer months. Steal yourself away from the chocolate (if you can) and head towards the back of the store for women’s fashion items. Belgium’s coming to Chiswick at L’Appetit Fou – don’t miss out.

Ealing residents, I need your help! My daughter lost her beloved teddy bear around the common last weekend and she’s absolutely devastated. Has anyone seen it or picked it up? It’s a soft, white bear, with one brown ear and a red bow around its neck. Please keep your eyes peeled, he’s sorely missed. Mrs Facino

Southern Grove gets go-ahead for £75million west London scheme
Mayfair-based developer Southern Grove has bagged planning for a £75million residential-led scheme in Ealing. The 0.27-hectare former retail site at 104 Broadway was snapped up in July last year and will now be turned into 136 flats atop 1,500 sq metres of shop frontage. Christened The Appleton, the eleven-storey scheme has been designed by Brimelow McSweeney Architects and will feature “sculpted brick piers and bronze coloured window and door frames” Topland Group helped out with the acquisition funding and GL Hearn advised on planning. Southern Grove’s CEO Andrew Southern said: “We are delighted that the elegant design detailing of the scheme and its impact on the regeneration of the

again with them on other projects.” Grove added that his firm is currently “in a very acquisitive phase”. Investors are being courted and the war-chest is being boosted via a number of opportunistic sales,
including last month’s disposal of the former Lobo meat factory off Old Kent Road to Family Mosaic. Southern Grove has also just announced a residential joint venture with Hurlington and Bmor, kicking things off with this £40million waterside residential scheme in Hayes, west London.

ccording to research by GoCompare, a garden is a property must-have for 71 per cent of homebuyers, and at Chiswick Gate by Berkeley Homes, the emphasis has been placed on providing glorious gardens and open spaces for the new community that will live in the townhouses and apartments. “For many people the outside space of a home is just as important as the living space inside, especially for buyers in London where the balance can be hard to find.” says Tim Pettman, sales director at Berkeley Homes (West London). “Berkeley prides itself on placemaking – not just building new homes – and delivering useable, outdoor space is key to this. Not only does it enhance our environment aesthetically – it makes our city a much better place to live in.

[PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT]
“Housebuilding is not just about providing people with shelter. It’s about creating fantastic places that transform people’s quality of life.” Combining striking architecture and a postcode in one of west London’s most desirable suburbs, complemented by 23,000 sq ft of traffic-free, communal landscaped gardens, Chiswick Gate is a truly enviable and desirable address. Inspired by the timeless quality of London’s classic residential squares, the homes at Chiswick Gate enjoy views over the beautifully landscaped pedestrianised boulevard or the lush garden square, which form the heart of this new community and offer a tranquil sense of place that is often difficult to find so close to the city. “As well as handsome architecture and great streets, residents want a good social life; they want links with neighbours, somewhere to meet and somewhere to relax and play. The spaces between the buildings are where you create a community,” adds Pettman. As well as the communal gardens, all of the homes at Chiswick Gate enjoy private outdoor space. The apartments and penthouses benefit from generous balconies or terraces from which residents can enjoy spectacular views of the development’s
As well as the communal gardens, all of the homes at Chiswick Gate enjoy private outdoor space landscaped grounds. The townhouses also feature spacious terraces, with the addition of private lawns and sunken courtyard gardens to selected homes. Exuding character and style, the three, four and five-bedroom townhouses, which feature a classical architectural design of mellow brick punctuated by charming, sash windows with Portland stone cills and cornices, have sunken gardens and/ or terraces in which to relax and enjoy the warmer weather. Chiswick Gate’s glorious gardens tick all the boxes for buyers looking for outside space in London. The homes continue to reflect one of
London’s most iconic architectural eras inside, with an elegant mix of classical features such as delicate cornicing and impressive staircases that elegantly rise up through each floor. A select number of spacious one, two and three-bedroom apartments and two and three-bedroom penthouses are also available at Chiswick Gate and all feature generous balconies or terraces, which further extend the spacious living areas and provide private outdoor space from which spectacular views across the development’s landscaped gardens and grounds. Paying homage to the development’s history – which was formerly occupied by the Cherry Blossom shoe polish factory – the apartments’ warehouse-style design is clearly reflected with large windows, expanses of floor-to-ceiling glazing and imaginativelydesigned interiors that exude flexibility and luxury in equal measure. Residents at Chiswick Gate will benefit from a gym and concierge service, delivering the exact level of facilities you would expect from a top London address. Prices at Chiswick Gate start from £749,950 for a two-bedroom apartment and from £2.2million for a four-bedroom townhouse.
