ashion god Karl Lagerfeld has collaborated with the renowned Hotel Métropole, Monte-Carlo. Le Voyage d’Ulysse autour de la Méditerranée is Lagerfeld’s modern photographic interpretation of Ulysses’ adventures as chronicled by Homer in his epic poems the Iliad and Odyssey, specifically created for the swimming pool and restaurant areas of the famous hotel. The piece consists of engraved, backlit glass panels depicting Lagerfeld’s raw photographs: shot on black-and-white film, processed by hand as delicate paper prints without retouching, and
digitally scanned in preparation for etching. Lagerfeld channels the charm and adventure of Homer’s tales and recasts them as sleek, 21st century installations that speak on their own terms. Alongside his unparalleled career as a fashion designer and stylist, Lagerfeld began working as a professional photographer in 1987. In October 1993 he received the Lucky Strike Design Award from the Raymond Loewy Foundation and in 2007, the Trustees Award from the International Centre of Photography in New York. n www.metropole.com

Vice Chairman of West Ham United F.C.,
tale of two men, and one renowned city; the lives of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton couldn’t really be more glamorous. Both are living the dream: sunning it up in Monaco in between racing cars; beautiful girlfriends on their arms; decked out in dapper Hugo Boss suits and top-ofthe-range TAG Heuer watches. They’ve won more trophies than they’ve had birthdays, and they’re hardly offensive to look at. What more could any man want? Their careers have taken some twists and turns, but both were driven from an early age after a little encouragement from their fathers. 27 year-old Hamilton, born in Stevenage, received a go-kart from his father at the age of six. And with nerves of steel, at the tender age of ten, he approached McLaren Executive Chairman Ron Dennis at the Autosport Awards ceremony and told him: "I want to race for you one day ... I want to race for McLaren." Less than three years
and by all accounts, a formidably successful businesswoman
later, his dreams came true when McLaren and MercedesBenz signed him to their Young Driver Support Programme. As well as his dad, Hamilton worshipped Brazilian racer Ayrton Senna: “For me, he was the greatest. He was my hero when I was a kid and I was devastated when he died.” Further down south in Somerset, Hamilton’s soon-tobe team-mate was also getting an early taste for the track; 32-year-old Button began karting at the age of eight, after his father bought him his first set of wheels. In 1989, aged just nine, he came first in the British Super Prix, taking his inspiration from French racing driver Alain Prost, who was “incredibly quick, but so smooth with it that you almost couldn’t tell until you looked at the times he was setting. He made it look easy, he made very few mistakes, and he was very gentle on the car. In an age when F1 cars weren’t as reliable as they are now, that was an important skill.” Contemporaries, competitors, colleagues; it wouldn’t

be surprising if Button and Hamilton didn’t speak away from the race track. As Ron Dennis famously said “second place simply makes you the first loser”. But both maintain relations are positively amicable: “We get on very well. People make a bigger deal out of the fact that we’re both World Champions and we’re both in the same team, but that’s not so important to me” says Hamilton. “We’re both British and both grew up in the same way – our dads worked hard to help our careers – and we’ve known each other for a long time. We do work very well together, both back at the factory and at the track.” “I watched him come up through the junior single-seater ranks when he was younger” says Button. “My dad also tuned his kart engine – many years ago – so he’s someone who’s always been on my radar. And we actually get on very well.” In keeping with his clean-cut image, Button says the most important thing before a race...is to get an early night. “It
may sound boring” he jokes “but you really have to be at the top of your game during the race, so proper rest is important before it. You have to tune out any distractions. Things have changed a lot since the early days – they used to say that if you saw Mike Hailwood or James Hunt at the circuit first thing in the morning, you couldn’t be sure if it was an early start or a late finish.” He even keeps the celebrations tame after a big win. “I’d love to say we party all night, but the way Grand Prix schedules are these days, most of the time we have planes to catch so we have to keep the celebrations short.” Having won three Grand Prix’s last year, Hamilton is keen to prolong his winning streak. “I want to win more this year. Winning a race is such a buzz – afterwards, of course, you’re always looking to the next race, but bringing home the trophies for winning driver and constructor is a lasting reminder of that feeling when you won.” Button adds: “We arrive at each Grand Prix aiming to

includes not only British Button and Hamilton but also industry legends Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard. In honour of this enduring association and our annual motoring issue, Richard Brown interviews Jack Heuer, the company’s honorary chairman, about TAG’s manufacturing and motoring history and what stands out from a career that has spanned six decades (p. 22).
When it comes to racing drivers, whether you’re a die-hard petrol head or more interested in a car’s aesthetics than its performance, the names Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton will most certainly be two of the most familiar. 32-year-old Button began go-karting in Somerset at the age of eight and, just a year later, he came first in the British Super Prix. 27 year-old Lewis, born in Stevenage, started even younger, at six, and at ten, he approached Ron Dennis, now Executive Chairman at McLaren, at the Autosport Awards ceremony to tell him: “I want to race for McLaren one day.” Less than three years later, McLaren and Mercedes-Benz signed him to their Young Driver Support Programme and the rest, as they say, is history. Kari Rosenberg speaks to the motoring superstars to find out about the winning formula that has given rise to their astounding success (p. 10) and their stylish off-track lives.
Excitingly, this month Canary Wharf will once again be filled with cars of all shapes, sizes and styles as Motorexpo 2012 rolls into town. More than 425,000 visitors are predicted to descend on the world’s largest free-to-visit motor show, taking place from 11 to 17 June (p. 34); hundreds of cars, from Bentley to BMW and MINI to Maserati, will be on show in front of the iconic Canary Wharf skyline. Check out the Land Rover experience and get behind the wheel of your favourite car to test out what it would be like to own it with DriveME. If you’d like to think you have a racing streak, Lee Brooks suggests six jaw-dropping, thrill-inducing options for the drive of your life; indulge your inner Hamilton by racing through the narrow, twisting streets of Monaco (p. 60).

win it – not just me but the whole team. They’re a very competitive bunch of people and when you’re in the car, you feel the momentum. Obviously the ultimate goal is the World Championship, but getting there just by picking up points is less satisfying than getting there by winning races.” Patriotic men, despite their Riviera post-codes, there’s nothing like racing on home soil. “As a British driver you grow up racing in the UK, so I know Silverstone really well” says Hamilton. “I raced here in Formula Renault, I’ve raced here in GP2. I know the circuit, so I think you have a deeper relationship with the tracks in the UK than in other countries. I love Silverstone because racing in front of my home crowd is special. The feeling you get is almost indescribable, knowing they’re all rooting for you. “But I look forward to Monaco as well. It’s a unique challenge and a special place to go racing. There’s absolutely no room for error. When you get ‘in the zone’ you can work wonders – look at the in-car footage from Ayrton Senna’s qualifying lap in the 1980s. It’s incredible. I always aim to get into that space. It’s one of the best tracks in the world. Corners like Copse and Becketts are some of the most exciting, hardcore corners in the world. From the cockpit, those places feel absolutely unbelievable, because the car is developing so much downforce that you feel totally nailed to the track. They are so fast. It’s crazy.” “Racing on home soil makes me feel particularly proud to be British” Button adds. “Thousands of loyal fans turn up in every kind of weather to see us race at Silverstone, and they are the best fans in the world. I’ve seen them cheering me on, lap after lap, year after year – a win would be a great reward for all of them. For me, coming back to Britain for the Grand Prix gives you that extra time and ability to relax: you’re on home turf, everything’s familiar to you and you can just get on with the weekend.”
With the 2012 F1 terrain looking highly unpredictable – each of the first five races this season was won by a different driver – Hamilton says: “What we’ve seen from some of the early races this year is that the field is quite open right now. Nobody has got a huge technical advantage so that has brought a lot of other drivers into play. If you look at the top 12 qualifiers at any Grand Prix, they’re all people who’ve won races, in GP2, Formula 3 and the DTM if not yet in F1.” “Every time the regulations change, even slightly, it creates opportunities” states Button. “It’s a great leveller. Teams that had successfully pursued a certain technical philosophy suddenly find it doesn’t work so well any more. And the teams that have the quickest development capacity get a head start because they understand the impact of the new rules quicker. “So this year the change in the exhaust regulations has really got the engineers going, because they love to find ways to maximise the advantages we can find within the rules. Pirelli has also brought a new family of tyres, and understanding how they work – how to get the best out of them, how their performance changes during a Grand Prix – is the key to winning.” Winning the World Championship and all the glory it entailed has by far been the highlight of Hamilton’s career, following a minor “hump” a couple of years back. “For any driver that is a career high, and the way I won it, with the battle going down to the last lap of the last race, made that final Grand Prix very tense and emotional. To come away with the World Championship after all that was an indescribable feeling.” For Hamilton, overcoming the challenges is just part of the job. “I think maybe in 2009, we had a lot of work to do in the early part of the season. I was the World Champion, I was carrying the number one on my car, but we didn’t have the most competitive car on the grid. In those circumstances you have to dig deep and almost give better than your best. Everybody worked so hard to turn it around. This team never just writes off a year and says, ‘Okay, let’s forget about this season and focus on next year’s car.’” “For any F1 driver, winning the World Championship is the ultimate goal and so for me, that is a personal highlight” says Button. “Maybe the trials you have to go through on the

“you’re always looking to the next race, but bringing home the trophies for winning driver and constructor is a lasting reminder of that feeling when you won” way there make it all the more satisfying in the end. That year [2009] was pretty tough because before the season started I didn’t even know if I was going to be driving or not.” Despite the fame and fortune – not to mention the women, clothes, and of course the cars, Hamilton remains humble. “I’m very privileged to have this job because being a racing driver is one of those jobs that defines who you are. I just love driving racing cars.” “Driving the car always gives me tremendous pleasure and satisfaction” says Button. “When you nail the perfect lap and you think, ‘If anyone can push harder than that, good luck to them.’ Or if the strategy calls for you to drive to a certain pace for a number of laps and you hit the mark every time. You know it’s going well!” Since both have been racing since their formative years, it’s easy to forget they’re still so young. What do they plan to do once they hit the finish line for the last time? “I’m too young to think about retiring!” says baby-faced Hamilton. “That said, I’ve found my work with UNICEF fulfilling. I went to Manila after the Malaysian Grand Prix this year to make a film about the street children and it was a life-changing experience. I’d like to do more to make a difference.” Button adds: “It’s not something I’m actively planning right now because I’m still young, but I could use my experience to go into driver management – bring another driver into F1 and look after their career. It would have to be something where you push yourself every day. I enjoy doing triathlons so maybe, if things had been different, I might have ended up as an athlete.” Both ambassadors for Hugo Boss and TAG Heuer, it’s no secret these boys know how to enjoy the finer things in life. But Hamilton’s style mantra is very much “keep it simple”. “Don’t go too crazy with colours. Less is more. The team is partnered with TAG Heuer and Hugo Boss so I’m never
short of something good to wear. You have to look your best all the time when you’re in the public eye, because if you’re spotted wearing something dodgy you can guarantee it’ll end up on the web somewhere!” Button doesn’t have “a particular style” but says he just “dresses for the occasion”, as happy to wear “shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops” as he is to don “a crisp, white, pressed shirt and a decent suit.” And of course, when it comes to cars they both have their pick of the bunch. “I’m driving a McLaren MP4-12C.” says Hamilton. “There’s a waiting list but I made sure I was near the front! It’s a cool car and I had some involvement in its development. In some ways I feel like it was designed for me – they came to me and Button and took casts of our hands when they designed the steering wheel.” “I’ve got a ‘company’ car” Button jokes. “Last year I went out to the Portimao circuit in Portugal to demonstrate the MP4-12C to journalists. It was a pre-production model but I could tell it was special. The new factory opened last November and I made sure I got one of the first 12Cs off the line.” With so much wealth, it could be easy to lose sight of what ‘value’ really means. But more than all the top gear, both name their most prized possession as the F1 World Championship trophy. Hamilton says: “You just look at it and see your name there along with Senna, Prost, Hunt, Clark, Fangio, Ascari… that’s when you grasp how important it is.” “It’s got great personal significance” says Button, “as well as being a fantastic piece of artwork. Every time I look at it I remember the day I won it.” Having amassed 90 trophies between them, Button and Hamilton are at the top of their game. With careers still spanning miles in front of them, their journey has only just begun. And they’re more than ready for the ride. n Get up close to a McLaren MP4-12C at the Motorexpo event in Canary Wharf, 11 – 17 June.

Lost London
The city of London has been inhabited for 2,000 years, but many of its splendid, quirky and macabre sights no longer stand. While writing his new book, Lost London, author Richard Guard uncovered some fascinating, vanished landmarks
Coldbath Fields Prison
Hockley-in-the-Hole
Built in 1794 on the site of a cold spring discovered in 1697, Coldbath Fields Prison in Clerkenwell was notorious for the severity of its regime. It was immortalised by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who wrote the following verse: As he went through Coldbath Fields he saw a solitary cell: And the Devil was pleased, for it gave him a hint For improving his prisons in Hell. The first prison governor, Thomas Aris, allowed inmates only one visitor and one letter every three months, and the governors who followed were, if anything, even more severe. Coldbath Fields was closed in 1877 and demolished in 1889, the site later becoming the home of the innocuous Mount Pleasant sorting office.
In the reign of Elizabeth I, the Bear Gardens pub at Hockley-in-the-Hole, which is located on what is today Ray Street, Clerkenwell, rivalled the Southwark Bear Gardens as a venue for dog fights, cock fights, bear and bull-baiting. Before fights, the animals were paraded through the streets to the beating of drums, as handbills were distributed describing the events of the day. One bill, for instance, read: This is to give notice to all gentlemen gamesters, and others, that on this present Monday is a match to be fought by two dogs, one from Newgate Market against one from Honey Lane Market, at a Bull. Likewise a green bull to be baited, which was never baited before, and a bull to be turned loose, with fireworks all over him; also a mad ass to be baited. To begin exactly at three of the clock.

Perhaps inevitably, some of the animals’ keepers met with tragic accidents. Christopher Preston, for instance, was attacked and almost devoured by one of his bears in 1709. For many years, the Bear Gardens also displayed a suitcase inscribed ‘R Turpin’ that was said to have belonged to the notorious highwayman. Hockley-in-the-Hole’s popularity waned as a more enlightened attitude to its ‘sports’ spread through society. Nonetheless, the tumble-down street remained until the widening of Farringdon Road in 1856–7 swept it away.
Baynard’s Castle There were two Baynard’s Castles in Blackfriars, east of the current Blackfriars Bridge. Legend tells that King John took a fancy to Matilda Fitzwater (known as ‘the Fair’), daughter of the master of the original castle, but she refused to become his mistress. Her father fled and she was carried off to the Tower of London, only to be poisoned with powder sprinkled on her poached egg. The second castle was built 50 years later about 100 yards east of the original. (The land was owned by Dominican monks, giving rise to the area becoming known as Blackfriars because they wore dark habits). Edward IV was crowned there in 1452, followed by both Lady Jane Grey and Mary Tudor in 1553. During the reign of Henry VIII it served as the home to three of his wives – Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and Anne of Cleves. The building, reportedly ‘one of the most interesting in London’, was sadly destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666 and never rebuilt, although one tower remained until 1720.
The unusual name of Wardrobe Place in EC4 carries the memory of the now-vanished King’s Wardrobe of Blackfriars. This 14th-century house, gifted to Edward III (1327– 77), was used to hold the ceremonial clothes of the king, which had previously been stored at the Tower of London. The Wardrobe also contained the clothes used by the royal family for weddings and coronations, along with state robes for ambassadors, the Prince of Wales, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, the King’s Ministers and Knights of the Garter. It was a veritable museum of royal fashions over a 400-year period. When the house was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666 (an event now commemorated by a blue plaque), a new location for the royal wardrobe was found on Buckingham Street, although by the mid-17th century its significance had declined. James I had allowed the Earl of Dunbar to sell some of the contents and he “sold, re-sold, and re-re-re-sold ... gaining vast estates thereby”.

Peerless Pool The precursor to all London’s lidos (or open-air swimming pools) was the subject of a wonderful piece of rebranding. Located on Old Street, the Perilous Pond was an ancient spring famed in the 17th century for its duck-hunting but with a reputation for accidents. In 1752 it was converted at considerable expense into a gravel-bottomed swimming pool by the jeweller William Kemp, opening in its new guise as the Peerless Pool in 1752. Kemp charged an entry fee of one shilling, making it the preserve of the wealthy, who had access to marble changing rooms. Shaded by fine trees, the pool soon became a popular city resort. For 100 years people came to swim in the summer and skate in the winter but by 1850 it had been built over. The nearby Peerless Street and Bath Street are now the only indicators that it was ever here.
Execution Dock A mile downstream from the Tower of London at the Wapping bend of the Thames – near the modern day Wapping Tube Station – once stood a jumble of wharves known as Execution Dock. For 400 years from the time of Henry VI, condemned pirates met their fate at this site and, in contrast to executions at Tyburn, once they were dead they were not immediately cut down. As historian John Stow explained, they were left “to remain till three tides had overflowed them”. Throngs of sightseers would attend, and there were still more degradations for these high-seas highwaymen. To discourage others, their bodies were often covered in tar to preserve them from the weather and to
16
prevent birds pecking out their softer parts. Their corpses were then hung in chains – gibbetted – along various points on the river. The notorious English privateer, Captain Kidd, was hanged here on 23 May 1701. During his execution, the hangman’s rope broke and Kidd had to be strung up again. His body was then gibbetted and remained a landmark by the river for the next 20 years. The Captain Kidd pub in Wapping continues to keep his name alive. George Davis and William Watts were the final victims to hang at the dock on 16 December 1830. n Lost London by Richard Guard is available now from Michael O’Mara Books, priced £9.99.

We prefer not to be measured by dimensions. Unless it’s a new dimension of accuracy.
No fewer than four exceptional mechanisms enhance the precision of the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite”: the tiny fusée-and-chain transmission, the delicate tourbillon, the ultra-thin Lange balance spring, and – not least – the patented stop-seconds device for the tourbillon which makes it possible to
set the watch with one-second accuracy in the first place. Never before has an A. Lange & Söhne watch been endowed with so many complications that simultaneously enhance its rate accuracy, settability, and readability. And so, this remarkable timepiece truly deserves the honorary attribute “Pour le Mérite”.

TENNIS TIME The collaboration between Richard Mille and Rafael Nadal is working well. The watchmaker has gained one of the world’s most famous sportsmen as an ambassador, while the tennis player has acquired what would seem a lucky charm – since modelling the RM027, Nadal has won eight consecutive ATP Masters titles. The most recent victory, the ATP Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo, saw him defeat world number one Novak Djokovic in just one hour and 18 minutes. Shock resistant, and therefore able to resist Nadal’s powerful approach to the game, the RM 027 is the lightest mechanical watch ever produced. www.richardmille.com
BIG BANG FERRARI We were in Italy last November with Ferrari and Hublot when the pair announced the partnership that made the Swiss watchmaking brand the Italian manufacturer’s exclusive watch partner. Four months later, we joined the duo in Switzerland when they unveiled their first joint collaboration: the Big Bang Ferrari. With an indexed crown reminiscent of a wheel rim, elongated push buttons fixed along a rotating axis
like the pedals in a car and the legendary prancing horse featured in relief at nine o’clock, Ferrari’s influence on the watch is unmistakable. Limited editions of the Big Bang Ferrari were formally unveiled in China at the opening of the Shanghai F1 Grand Prix this spring and we expect the pieces to become collectors’ items within years. www.hublot.com

Mastering Time
on the track
One watch brand has become more synonymous with motorsport than any other. Stretching from Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna through Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard to Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, TAG Heuer’s roster of racing ambassadors reads like a Who’s Who of motor-racing fame. To celebrate our motoring issue, Richard Brown speaks to Jack Heuer, TAG Heuer’s Honorary Chairman
“T
his is something I have never really understood,” Jack Heuer says of the Monaco, one of the two timepieces responsible for catapulting TAG Heuer to the top of the fine watch industry. “We had tried to make something totally different, something unlike we had ever produced before.” TAG’s Heuer’s Honorary Chairman – the great grandson of Edouard Heuer, the man who founded the company – is talking just weeks before his impending retirement at the age of 80, reflecting on a career that has spanned six decades and one that has helped to launch some of TAG Heuer’s most iconic watches – including the Monaco. “The case manufacturer had obtained a patent on a new way to make a square watchcase waterproof, so we were able to play with the design,” Heuer explains. “However, what we came to produce proved to be too avant-garde; when it was first released [in 1969], the Monaco was bought only by architects and designers.” So unpopular was the watch, in fact, that within seven years it had phased itself out of the market. Luckily for TAG, a movie-maker named Steve McQueen was about do for the Monaco what no marketing manager ever could. Preparing for his upcoming cinematic homage to the world’s most famous endurance race, Le Mans, Hollywood’s King of Cool approached Grand Prix champion Jo Siffert for advice. For the sake of authenticity, Siffert told McQueen to wear his own racing suit and Heuer’s Autavia wristwatch. McQueen took the suit, but rather than the Autavia, it was the Monaco that he strapped to his arm. From the cockpit of McQueen’s Porsche 917 Gulf, the status of the Monaco proliferated, quickly becoming the racing circuit’s most glamorous accessory. But while the watch’s popularity burgeoned under McQueen’s endorsement, at the time, the film industry’s highest paid actor was never under contract with the company. “We were not keen to align his image with our brand,” says Heuer.
“He was a fantastic actor but from the late 60s he started to take drugs and drink too much. He was no longer a role model we could work with.” Two decades later, however, and TAG Heuer had come to realise the marketing appeal of a man who had passed into movie history as one of its most celebrated stars. When the Monaco was relaunched in 1998, it was McQueen who stood as the campaign’s obvious poster boy. “They [TAG Heuer] made an agreement with the son of McQueen for the rights to his name,” explains Jack. “Then they got hold of this fantastic picture of Steve wearing the Monaco in the film. By then the world remembered only the good sides of Steve McQueen and when the 5,000 pieces were released, they sold in a relatively short space of time. Today the Monaco remains a fundamental piece in our collection.” Fundamental as it may be, it’s not Jack’s favourite. That comes in the form of TAG’s other most famous creation: the Carrera. Now accounting for a third of TAG Heuer’s overall sales, the original Carrera was launched back in 1963. Taking its name from the Carrera Pan Americana, a legendary fiveday endurance race across Mexico, and designed with the needs of motor-racing enthusiasts in mind, the watch was a clean, uncluttered piece that featured a wide-open, easy-toread dial and a shock-resistant, waterproof case. During the nine year contract TAG Heuer had with Ferrari in the 70s, Jack would present every Ferrari driver with an 18-carat gold edition of the watch. Engraved on the back with the driver’s name and blood group, the 50 that were produced now sit near the top of every serious watch collector’s wish list. For Jack, the watch has come to resonate on far more than an aesthetic level. “I have many experiences related to that watch,” he tells me. “On one occasion, I met Villeneuve’s wife [Gilles Villeneuve had driven for Ferrari from 1978 until his death at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1982], when their son [Jacques] was racing Formula One in Monaco. The son had chartered a big boat and was giving a reception there. Mrs Villeneuve greeted me on the top deck.
23
collection interview
She said ‘Oh, hello Mr Heuer. You know, I still have the watch you gave my husband. I wear it all the time.’ I got very emotional and nearly cried. Some of the best years of my career were somehow related to these watches.” Only fitting, then, that Mr Heuer should exit the company by designing a Carrera, “the way I really wanted to see it.” The result is a slimmer, lighter version of the watch that remains his favourite. “We made it 100 metres waterproof, instead of 300 metres, which meant we could use crystal glass half a millimetre less thick. I asked for a flatter movement and a lot of internal details like that. Then I put my signature and our family crest on the back.” The end product, Jack Heuer’s 80th Birthday Edition Carrera, will be limited to 3,000 pieces. Or, more accurately, 3,000 minus the four that Jack is keeping for himself and his three children. The other 2,996 watches, not unsurprisingly, have already been sold. Born in 1932, Heuer grew up in a family obsessed with motorsport; his grandfather, “a car nut”, owned only the fourth automobile in the state of Bern. Jack himself has distinct memories of watching the Swiss aristocracy testing their cars on the country’s alpine roads. When hill climbing became a popular Swiss motorsport, it was his great-grandfather’s company that provided the devices used to time the races. After the end of the Second World War, Heuer (as the company was then known) became involved with rally racing, before progressing into GT and from GT into Formula One – a sphere that would provide the company with associations to some of sports’ biggest names. Siffert, Regazzoni, Ickx, Lauda, Prost, Senna, Häkkinen, Villeneuve: over the last half century, TAG Heuer has assembled an incomparable roster of racing ambassadors to endorse their timepieces. “We are very choosy about our ambassadors; their characteristics must represent the values of our brand,” says Heuer. “For us, that means honesty, integrity, a sporty attitude and a clean history. We sit down with all of them for talks and each must come to our factory to learn about the brand they are representing.” Those who have taken the tour more recently include Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, ambassadors who have successfully carried the brand into the 21st century by adding their names to the F1 Champions’ hall of fame. If TAG Heuer’s continued commitment to motorsport is one thing that has remained a constant during the last 50 years, what in the watch world has changed? “In the 1960s, Switzerland produced about 25 per cent of the world’s watches,” says Heuer. “By the 1990s we produced about 2.5 per cent. Partly this is due to the low priced quartz watches.
24
Switzerland has been transformed from a mass-producing watch country to a country producing a smaller number of high-end watches for the luxury industry. The country is still in the process of adapting.” There’s been another change that intrigues Mr Heuer; that a watch no longer exists to make sure you’re on time. “Now,” he muses, “it’s more to show you who you are. For 25 years I would get complaints from clients all over the world if my watch was more than a minute a week off. Today, nobody ever questions how accurate the watch is. They are used to turning on the news and changing their watch to the time it says on the screen. It doesn’t seem to bother anybody anymore.” Except for TAG Heuer, that is. To this company, precision timing is the basis on which the brand was built. It still holds the record for accurately timing the closest finish in the whole of motor racing history – when Mattias Ekström beat Heikki Kovalainen in the 2006 Race of Champions by 2/10,000ths of a second – and it’s not an accolade the team plans on giving up. Having astonished the world in January with the Mikrogirder, a chronograph capable of recording 5/10,000ths of a second, Jack Heuer assures us that the company founded by his great grandfather will “continue to challenge the classical way of making a watch,” with or without him at the helm. n For stockists, call 0800 037 9658 or visit www.tagheuer.com

JEWELS FOR HOPE
Denis Hayoun - Diode SA
With Baselworld finished in March, the jewellery world did not have to wait long before another important event was ticked off its calendar. Jewels for Hope, the sale of Lily Safra’s astounding collection of 70 jewels for charitable institutions, recently took place in Geneva on 14 May. Including fine antique and period jewellery, as well as significant diamonds, rubies and sapphires, in amongst Mrs Safra’s jewels were 18 pieces by JAR – totalling the largest private assortment of the Parisian jeweller’s creations ever to be offered at auction. Our favourite piece in the collection is the ruby and diamond Camellia flower brooch by the renowned Parisian jeweller; made in 2003, it is an astonishing piece of craftsmanship. Ruby and diamond Camellia flower brooch, JAR, £740,000-£926,500
Cutting Edge Rebecca Hawkins, Head of Design at Boodles, explains the premise behind the latest collection, entitled Wonderland, from which we have selected our chosen cutting edge piece:
The latest collection is inspired by nature: by the joys and celebration of flowers but also a reminder of their impermanence. My favourite piece is a lovely, delicate, articulated cluster of flowers cut from blushing shades of pink tourmaline, framed in gold that hangs as a necklace. All the flowers are different and inspired by my love of plants. I believe stones have powers. We know instinctively if a gem makes us feel strong, more confident, comforted or safe. Memories are encased in jewels that have been passed down from those we have known and loved, making them more precious. Turquoise Mountain is a foundation set up by Rory Stewart to preserve and restore traditional craft and architecture in Kabul. I’ve loved every moment I’ve spent there and have learnt so much about the people and their tragic, complex situation. I was very lucky when working with Gucci that Tom Ford was looking for a more organic, handmade feel for the jewellery, more colour and a freer hand. It was a perfect job for me and a great learning experience. In the future? I plan to continue collaborating with communities around the world, open a shop in New York and shortly become a mother.
Wonderland’s creation has been a fabulous opportunity to explore the exquisite patterns and colours from diverse cultures, and combine the elements to create contemporary and unique collectable jewels

No Added Sugar Annabel Harrison speaks to Karren Brady; Vice Chairman of the recently promoted West Ham United F.C., Lord Sugar’s right hand woman on BBC1’s The Apprentice, non-executive director of Arcadia, magazine and newspaper columnist and, by all accounts, a formidably successful businesswoman
H
er autobiography’s back cover begins with the words “It’s amazing what you can get with ambition, grit and a great pair of heels” and ends with an endorsement from none other than Lord Sugar himself: “She is a champion for women. Her story explains to others how to find that balance between family and being a top businesswoman at work.” How did your previous roles in advertising and broadcasting prepare you for directorship of Birmingham FC at such a young age? Before Birmingham I was working for David Sullivan at Sport newspapers for three years. My title was Sales and Marketing Director but what I soon realised is that in a small company [like that] no one has just one job. I had a hand in everything; the financial side, the marketing side, the sales side and I even made the tea. When I arrived at Birmingham I had already experienced so many different aspects of running a business, especially in a commercial sense, so I felt ready to take control of it all myself. I approached [the position] with excitement: I was the one who had persuaded David Sullivan that we should buy the club and I was young and hungry for a challenge. I knew when I took the job there that I would face some outdated beliefs about women in football and I was determined to show those people that they were wrong. I wanted to put down a marker and lead the company with integrity and professionalism.
You have been quoted as saying: “I like the challenge of change” and “I really believe in life-long learning”. Is this why you juggle such a range of roles in different industries? I feel each different role challenges me in a different way. They all have their own demands and rewards but I would say filming The Apprentice takes a lot out of you as it is a huge commitment in terms of time, energy, stamina and concentration. Alan is not present during the tasks, so Nick and I are his eyes and ears and we have to be able to tell him exactly who made a decision that led to any particular outcome. It involves a lot of note taking so a lot of the time I’m not even looking at what’s going on, just scribbling down my notes as quickly as I can. Would you have applied for The Apprentice if it had been around when you were 21? That’s a tricky one. Although I love the show and believe it offers a great shop window for some of Britain’s brightest young business talent, I think that at 21 I was already doing well enough that I might not have needed to. I was in a good job that I was enjoying so may not have wanted to risk that by entering the show.
I knew when I took the job there that I would face some outdated beliefs about women in football and I was determined to show those people that they were wrong
What have been the biggest changes in the football world over the last ten years? I think the financial side of the football continues to push the game to new heights. The combination of increased TV revenue and the quantity of foreign money pouring into British clubs from overseas is quite staggering. If you look at how Chelsea and, more recently, Manchester City have evolved then it is almost unbelievable. Can you update me on the status of West Ham’s Olympic Stadium bid? We can’t say too much due to confidentiality clauses but I can reiterate that if we are lucky enough to be awarded it, we will make sure it is a world-class stadium fit for football and athletics and a brilliant new home for our fans.
42
What’s the biggest risk you have ever taken in business? Probably when I was just starting out. When I first tried to secure David Sullivan as one my clients for advertising on LBC he said he wasn’t interested and radio didn’t work. I gave him a sales pitch but he still wasn’t convinced so I told him that he could have the space for free if sales didn’t go up. Of course I didn’t have the authority to offer a deal like that but I thought to myself, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’ I could have been fired but luckily sales did go up and soon David was spending £2 million a year on advertising. I was managing it all and earning more commission than all the other sales staff put together. How has social media affected your businesses and what changes have you had to make? Social media is such a fast-changing industry that you need to constantly be analysing what you’re doing on it. We took over the club in 2010 and at that stage it had not really explored this area and it was something I focussed on straightaway with the team I put in place. Since we started, our social media presence has gone from strength to

women should not be separated in business awards. Right now it is brilliant that the all-too-few women that are at the top in business are getting the recognition that they rightly deserve. Who have been your role models throughout your career? When I was young my Grandma Nina was amazing. She really believed in me and gave me belief in myself. She would always be pushing me forward telling me to get ahead of everyone. Also, women like Hilary Clinton, who rode out of the shadow of her husband to become world class in her chosen field, Adele, the singer, who always makes me feel proud to be British and Annie Lennox for her constant campaigning for women’s issues and the articulation of feminism. What advice would you give a young person looking to get into the world of business? Try to think about the type of person you want to be, because a career lasts a lifetime. I think if you’re fortunate enough to have a career you love, you get more out of life.
David Burrows / Shutterstock.com
What do you like most about London? It will always hold a special place in my heart as I got married to Paul [Peschisolido] at The Dorchester Hotel and it was very romantic. I love East London as well and I think you can learn a lot about the culture of the area from the football team that plays in it. West Ham United sums up everything that is good about the East End, which of course is where the Olympics will be held this summer.
strength. At the last count our Facebook page has 262,000 ‘Likes’ and we have just passed the 55,000 follower mark on Twitter. They are a great way to engage with our supporters in a slightly less formal setting. If you were to run the country, what would be your top priorities from the outset? I have said before that in the future I would like to help the government in some way. I believe that the key to running the country is based on the same tenets as running a business: process, planning and strategy. You’ve won numerous awards for being influential, inspirational and a woman ‘who has changed the world’. What has been the highlight of your career so far, if not one of the awards? Does it bother you that for some of them you are singled out as the best in the female domain, not overall? The awards are a welcome recognition of the hard work I put in and I really do appreciate them, but I also take great pride in seeing the day-to-day progress in the companies that I run; as a result of the hard work that I put in, [Birmingham City] made a trading profit for the first time in its modern history. That was hugely important for me because I had to make my mark as a young woman in football. It showed I could deliver and for me was as good as any award. Of course I believe that men and
44
You have said you’re inspired most by those who rise up against the odds. How important is philanthropy and involvement in charities to you? Very important. Despite my hectic schedule I still ensure I make time to support not-for-profit organisations. As someone who has a high profile position, it is important that we make time to use our profile to help causes that are close to our hearts. I was privileged to help head up a campaign to raise £1 million to build a teenage ward in Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The result was a place that helped change the lives of many young people who have been affected by cancer so I was very proud of all of our efforts. I also do work for various charities, including the Stroke Association, Wellbeing of Women, WellChild and Teenage Cancer Trust. In terms of personal finance, what do you think is the most important rule to live by? Be cautious. You work hard for your money so don’t gamble it on something if you’re not sure about it. When I buy something, I’m always aware of how hard I had to work to earn it. Calculate the worst thing that can happen and be comfortable with it. If your life savings are at stake and you could lose everything, to me that would be a risk too far. If you could, which Olympics sport would you chose to compete in and win? 100 metres. n

Diamonds Forever Dr. David Kuo explains why investing in diamonds could be a lucrative venture, if you know what you are doing A gem-collector friend claims he can tell if a diamond is a fake from twenty paces. Naturally, he’s been in the gemstone business for years, which clearly helps. Personally, I can’t tell the difference between diamonds and bits of broken glass. Consequently, I don’t buy gemstones as an investment, though lots of people do through funds or shares in actual diamond mining companies.
It seems that retail jewellers can mark up a stone by as much as 200 per cent on the wholesale price. Therefore, gemstone specialists advise collectors to buy their stones directly from wholesalers too. Other useful sources include market stalls, auctions and pawnbrokers, though you will need your wits about you at these places.
They also claim that gemstones can be a good alternative investment, and they may well be right. For instance, I recently read that the outlook for diamonds seems bullish and that they’re the next big investment. Demand in the U.S., the world’s biggest consumer of polished diamonds, has been strong so far this year as the world’s biggest economy shows signs of recovery. Forecasts for demand in India and China are also very positive according to the head of the World Diamond Council (WDC).
Even if you manage to find a bargain, seasoned gemstone collectors reckon that you may need to hold the stones for as long as ten years to get a decent return. Additionally, selling your gems may not be that easy because the market for gemstones is illiquid. So just because you want to sell your stones does not mean that there are going to be available buyers.
Just to get a feel for how lucrative gemstone investing can be, a Texan rancher Warren Hancock bought an unusual red diamond from his jeweller for $13,500 in 1956. The diamond was sold in 1987, reportedly to The Sultan of Brunei, for $880,000. That equates to a compound return of 15 per cent per annum for the gem, which is known as the Hancock Red. Interestingly, Hancock paid retail price for his diamonds, which is something that gemstone experts strongly advise against. According to those in the know, it is possible to make money from gems, but it is rare to do so if you pay retail prices for them.
Perhaps the best place to sell your stones is directly to private jewellers who are able to work your gems into wearable items. However, bear in mind that jewellers can buy directly from wholesalers, so why should they buy from you? Alternatively, you can sell you gems through specialist auction houses. These include Sotheby’s, Bonhams and Christie’s, which was responsible for auctioning the Hancock Red. Before you get dazzled by the allure of gems, it is worth bearing in mind that fake stones are in abundance, so it pays to be extra cautious. Additionally, if you are not an expert in valuing precious stones, then you almost certainly need the help of someone who is knowledgeable and will help you with your assessment. n

High Flyer Forex trader Greg Sacker shows Kari Rosenberg how to juggle markets and machinery
comment
If on 26 April you’d looked into the heavens above the City, you may have seen a helicopter hovering above the skyline. This helicopter didn’t contain a commuter rushing to get from one meeting to another; nor a news crew reporting on the financial climate below. This helicopter, rather, contained Forex master trader – also known as The Flying Trader – Greg Secker, who was operating the markets while flying a helicopter to make money for charity.
in front of you and you know that the markets below you are genuinely being affected by what you’re doing at that very moment.
“Flying has always been one of my biggest passions in life, alongside my job and my philanthropic work”, says the serial entrepreneur, “so it seemed only logical to try to combine all three and use these passions to help other people. It resulted in something incredible.”
From 7.30am until 12.30pm, Greg skillfully traded the markets using a series of techniques to communicate with the floor below, aided by his co-pilot and a technician. From texting, to brief film clips streamed direct to the trading floor, Greg sent his messages down as often as possible, explaining his transactions, why he was making them, and giving advice to his fellow students below. In addition to his trading floor of Knowledge To Action traders – people that Greg has taught through his specialist school – his exchanges were also streamed online so that Knowledge To Action associates across the world could tune in and follow his moves.
A multi-millionaire by his 20s, Greg has created and run one of Europe’s top trader coaching companies. Using the market strategies discovered on his travels around international trading floors, Greg decided to retire as vice-president of firm Mellon Financial Corporation (then a major Fortune 500 investment bank in the United States) at the age of just 27 to set up a trading floor from his home. In just three short months after officially retiring, Knowledge to Action was born in 2010 and thus the charitable wing Knowledge To Action Foundation. Alongside his partner Katherine Scott, the Foundation’s main aim was to help improve the quality of life for disadvantaged children around the world. Since then, The Flying Trader has been a main event in the Foundation’s fundraising efforts. “It’s such an incredible feeling, trading the markets from inside the helicopter,” Greg explains. “Hovering at 1,000 feet above the City, you can see the whole of London stretching out
“I’m always passionate about trading, and love making money, but when I know that what I’m doing is helping some incredible charities, it’s an unbelievable buzz. When it all goes well, like it did this year, it makes all the hard work and planning worthwhile.”
ETX Capital, the official sponsor of the event, agreed to donate all brokerage profits to the Knowledge To Action Foundation. £27,000 was raised, the proceeds from which will go to the Ubuntu Education Fund; providing more than 40,000 orphaned and HIV positive children in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, with lifesaving health services and educational resources, and Barnardo’s ‘Hub’ project; a constructive workshop in East London which provides training and education for the City’s most needy young people. Money will also go to Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Unite and Pride ‘n Purpose charities to enable communities to build crèches in Sabi Sands, South Africa. n

Fisker Automotive

the power of Karma
It’s built from recycled materials and can harness energy from the sun; say hello to the world’s most environmentally friendly luxury sedan
F
rom January to April this year, a car relatively unseen on UK roads beat models from BMW, Mercedes and Audi to become the second-highest seller of luxury four-door cars in Holland; an impressive achievement for an electric car less than six months’ old. Launched in December 2011, the Fisker Karma Sedan outsold BMW’s 7-series, Mercedes’ S-class and the Audi A8 to become the first ultra-low emission hybrid to outsell its combustion engine competitors, earning its manufacturers £62 million revenue in the process.
When in 2007 automotive engineers Henrik Fisker and Bernhard Koehler created the world’s first premium hybrid electric vehicle, it took Fisker just 48 months to take the original Karma from concept to showroom. Their finished product changed the perception of what an electric car could be: impressive in style and performance, a luxury sedan that could reach 0-60mph in just 6.2 seconds. Awarded a first prize at this year’s International Design Awards, Automobile Magazine’s 2012 ‘Design of the Year’ and Top Gear’s 2011 ‘Luxury Car of the Year’, the Fisker Karma has redefined what we can expect from electric-hybrid cars. n

In the Driving Seat After the launch of Audi’s S6 and S7 in Munich at the end of April, Richard Brown spoke to Martin Sander, Director of Audi UK, about cars of the future and becoming the world’s leading premium car brand
A
fter a highly successful tenure as President and CEO of Audi Canada, where he oversaw rapid growth in sales and an extensive expansion of the country’s dealership network, Martin Sander became Director of Audi UK in January 2012. A mechanical engineering graduate, Sander has spent the last 16 years at the company, having previously worked as director of sales for Northern Europe. I spoke to Martin at last month’s annual Audi Polo Challenge – a charity event hosted at Ascot’s Coworth Park in association with HRH Prince Harry and HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. What key features distinguish Audi from other manufacturers? The design of our products; the exterior and interior, the technological features. It comes from a continual desire to develop the best possible technology and bring that technology to our customers. Vorsprung durch Technik (Progress through Technology) is our brand core and our whole history. We’ve always been based around engineering, challenging the status quo and finding better technical solutions for our customers. How important is the UK market in comparison with Audi's markets in emerging countries? At the moment the UK is number three in the world for
us in terms of sales numbers. Of course there are many markets like India and South America that are growing rapidly. I think over the next decade there’s going to be huge business potential for us. But as the UK is number three in the world, it’s an important market, and I think it will stay as such for the forseeable future.

How important is environmental sustainability to Audi and what is the company doing to try to reduce its carbon footprint? It is absolutely paramount because consumers expect products they are using to be as environmentally friendly as possible. This is why, very early on, we started putting a lot of emphasis on bringing our CO2 emissions down and re-invented the TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine, which has become state of the art. Next year, with our new Audi A3, we’re going to have both a diesel engine and a gasoline engine that produces less than 100 g/km of CO2. Which are the biggest changes you’ve witnessed in the automotive industry over the last decade? In terms of technology, definitely the reduction of fuel consumption, of CO2 emissions, and the safety features now available in cars. Fuel consumption I think is maybe the most important and the most dramatic change we have seen in car technology over the last few years. A couple of years ago it would have been impossible to talk about 150-200 horse power and cars that produced less than 100 g/km of CO2. How far are we from an 100 per cent electric Audi? We are very close to an all-electric Audi. We have a complete product in the pipeline which we are going to launch next year. However, I think we are still far, far away from electric vehicles replacing internal combustion engines. There is still a lot of development potential to improve the efficiency of diesel and gasoline engines. We are focussing on both, developing better electric vehicles, because in the long run, I think this will be where zero emission is most required, especially for densely populated areas like London. Tell us about Audi’s commitment to polo. We are a very successful company and, as a result, a very profitable one. We therefore have an obligation to give back to those around us. We are part of society, we are part of this country, and because we are in such a positive spot, are profitable and have a sustainable business, we have the possibility to make a contribution to the community by giving back. What's the biggest risk you have taken in business? Maybe when I came to Canada in the beginning of 2009. When other companies were trying to reduce their expenditure and save money, I was of the conviction that we as a brand
had the possibility to grow in a difficult environment. I saw that Canada was more stable and invested more money than other companies. We bought more cars from Germany than other companies and as a result we started a really fantastic growth of the brand, which is still expanding. We more than doubled sales in three years. There was a real risk involved and it could have gone wrong. What can we expect to see from Audi in the next few years? Many fascinating and beautiful new cars that will put smiles on a lot of people’s faces. In general, our vision and our goal is to be the premium brand in the world. So I think you are going to see quite a dramatic development in terms of volume, colours, the way we are re-building our inner network and the value of our dealerships in improving customer satisfaction. What's the best looking car currently in production? My personal favourite is the A5; it’s very refined. If I had to drive a car that wasn’t an Audi, it would be a Ferrari 308. If you could compete in an Olympic event, what would it be? The marathon, because running is the only type of sport I can really do. n www.audi.co.uk

Remarkably, no they didn’t, despite the insistence of a lower case ‘u’ and the exclamation mark. Nor did they worry about the potential for feeble jokes at their baby’s new expense (any minor traffic shunt would be a cock-up!, etc). Why no grimace? Having successfully dealt with the fallout surrounding Sharan (Essex mums’ favourite MPV?) they probably reckon they can handle anything. Indeed, they’ve embraced the name and instead of calling the different trim levels S, SE and so on, the entry level model is the Take up!, then comes the Move up!, with the High up! on top. Fortunately for VW, the up (forgive me, I can’t be doing with all the exclamations marks) is little short of brilliant, the best small car the company has made for decades. It’s full of cheeky charm and is completely classless. Thanks to its tiny 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine, it’ll save money at the pumps and at road tax renewal time, though only one model in the range – the BlueMotion – has CO2 emissions below 100g/km to give it free access to the congestion charge zone. Anyone looking for a car full of gadgets and gimmicks will be disappointed by the up, mind you. The interior is simple to the point of austerity, but does that really matter? This is a car built for the city so all you need is power steering and a radio or CD player. The Take Up has both for just £7,995. Similarly its 60hp three-cylinder engine (complete with endearing off-beat sound track) isn’t going to win any races, but in the city, who cares? Its nimble handling, agility and sheer joie de vivre more than make up for its relative lack of performance. Besides, if you do want more performance, there’s also a 75hp version of the same engine. Pick of the bunch? Probably the 60hp Move Up, which starts at £8,970 and which adds air conditioning, electric front windows and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) to the mix. If you want to go the whole way, though, there are two special versions – the up white and the up black (guess what body colours they come in), which cost £11,180 a piece. These have the 75hp engine, alloy wheels, heated front seats, dark tinted rear window, a leather steering wheel and various bits of chrome trim as well as the splendid ‘Maps and More’ portable sat nav and information device. Just slot it into the dashboard and as well as displaying maps and route guidance it incorporates a media player, comprehensive trip computer and Bluetooth telephone function. It’s a £275 option on the Move Up. The arrival of the VW up is bad news for Fiat, which has totally revamped its baby car. It’s still called Panda and looks much the same as its predecessor, but make no mistake: this is a completely new car. Like the VW, the Panda is a classless car, though the familiarity of the shape, perhaps, makes it slightly less appealing than the VW. That said, it is a bigger car, with four doors from the outset (a four door version of the VW is on its way). It is also more stylish inside, though equipment levels aren’t quite as generous as the up’s. The mid-grade Panda is called Easy (Pop’s the bottom grade, with Lounge at the top) and includes air conditioning and electric front windows, but ESP is an extra cost option. On the road it doesn’t feel as nimble or as much fun as the
calibre
VW, though it is more at home on the motorway as there’s more power available. There are three engine options: two petrol versions and a diesel. For a car mired in the city most of its life, there’s little to gain in choosing the diesel, so the options here are the two-cylinder TwinAir and the rather more sedentary four-cylinder ‘Fire’ engine. The TwinAir is a remarkable engine. It might displace just 875cc but with the benefit of a turbocharger produces a healthy 85hp. According to Fiat it’ll give 67mpg and sub 100g/km emissions but if you use the performance you’ll not see mpg anywhere near as good as that… though the twin cylinder ‘thrum’ from under the bonnet is addictive. The older Fire engine is bigger (1.2-litres), slower, thirstier and produces an out-of-date 120g/100km of CO2, meaning bigger road tax bills and no congestion charge exemption. It is cheaper than the TwinAir, though. At the end of the day, though, the choice here is not a hard one to make when it comes to engines, as the VW comprehensively comes up trumps. If you’re looking for a city car, the only way is up! n

FIGHTING BULL Ignore the Porsche logo in the background, says Matthew Carter. This is not the next generation Cayenne, but something far more dramatic: it’s a Lamborghini
T
his is how the Italian sports car manufacturer sees its next move: a four door superfast SUV that could eat Range Rovers for breakfast. Lambo showed the Urus as a concept at the recent Beijing Motor Show but it won’t be a production reality until 2016. At this stage, firm details are scarce, but you can expect prodigious amounts of power (say 600hp) from an Audisourced engine, either a V8 or V10, and 4x4 chassis. Why Audi? Lamborghini – like recent addition Ducati – is owned by the VW/Audi Group and that means it can pick and choose the technology it needs to create Urus from the VW parts bin. Why is the company contemplating an SUV? Simply because that’s where the money is. According to Lambo, nearly all their owners also have a 4x4 tucked away in the garage, so why not give them one with the fighting bull badge on its nose? It’s the same thinking that led Porsche to create the Cayenne and also why Bentley showed the mammoth EXP 9F at Geneva. And besides, Lambo used to make a 4x4: the extraordinary V12-powered LM002 of the mid-1980s Lamborghini is hoping to sell around 3,000 Urus SUVs annually and more than double its yearly sales at a stroke. Not that the company is going to abandon sports cars: the Gallardos and Aventador (or whatever the next generation are called) will still exist. Indeed, before the company decided to move into the SUV market, it did look at a small
58
sports car (not enough profit) and even considered a fourdoor saloon (not enough potential sales). And the name? Many Lamborghinis down the ages, including the Muira, Islero and Urraco, have had connections with bulls and bull fighting. Urus continues the theme – it’s a breed of large, wild, cattle that inhabited Europe until extinction in the 17th century. n

THE DRIVE OF YOUR LIFE
PHB.cz (Richard Semik) / Shutterstock.com
Sometimes it’s all about the journey, not the destination. Lee Brooks picks out the world’s most beautiful, jaw-dropping and exhilarating roads from bonnie Scotland to Australia
Monte Carlo, Monaco Do you marvel at the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher as they throw their Formula 1 machines around Monte Carlo’s tight and twisty streets during the Monaco Grand Prix and wish you could do the same? Well, maybe you can. Every year for four days in May, the streets of the Principality are closed so that Hamilton and co can show you how it’s done. But once the chequered flag falls, the barriers come down and the road is all yours. Begin on the main straight and head into the right-hander St Devote. Put the power down as you climb the steep hill before sweeping into Casino Square and down the hill to Mirabeau. The famous Fairmont hairpin sweeps into view – which really is as tight as it looks on TV – before blasting through the tunnel, negotiating the swimming pool complex and rounding Rascasse before crossing the line.
Granted, pootling about in your Ford Fiesta isn’t quite the same, but trust me when I say it’s enough to imagine what it would feel like to hit 250 kilometres per hour just inches away from a wall, barrier or the sea.
Stelvio Pass, Italy Home to the most famous car in the world – a Ferrari – it’s only natural that Italy should boast a selection of spectacular roads on which to put the supercar through its paces. Deep in the Eastern Alps is Stelvio Pass. The extraordinary piece of sweeping tarmac features an incredible 60 hairpin bend as it winds its way up a monstrous 2,757 metre climb with only a barrier to keep you from tumbling all the way back to the bottom. The route is so spectacular, it has become one of the busiest of the high passes in the Alps, which means you need to head out nice and early in the morning to steer clear of
motoring
swarming crowds. At the very least, avoid the thrill-seeker rush in July and August. Approach from the north side and you’ll find a challenging, steeper climb, but come from the south and you’ll have wider, faster turns. Whatever direction you choose, the views from the top are most certainly worth the ascent.
Millau Viaduct, France While the French are very proud of the Millau Viaduct which lays claim to being the tallest bridge in the world, they may be less inclined to tell you that it is the brainchild of our very own British architect Sir Norman Foster. It was built to ease the flow of traffic through the Valley of Tarn in central-south France that linked Paris to Perpignan and cost approximately 400 million euros to complete. The result was a 2,460 metre long bridge/road that stands an impressive 341 meters tall, making it higher than the nation’s iconic Eiffel Tower. If it’s cloudy, you’re so high up it’ll feel like you’re flying – or in heaven – as you cruise along the sweeping turns with imposing steel pylons lining the strip like an armed guard. Once the clouds clear, you’re hit by breath-taking views across the lush French countryside while at night, the viaduct is illuminated with colourful lights to create a radiant ribbon piercing through the valley.
Great Ocean Road, Australia Best described as a museum without walls, the Great Ocean Road is an epic coastal drive, which stretches between Torquay (not the English seaside town) to Warrnambool in south-eastern Victoria. The stretch was built by soldiers returning from World War One and winds its way along the coast for a mighty 400 kilometres, passing rugged cliffs, enticing small sandy coves and quaint little fishing villages. The highlight is arguably the Twelve Apostles rock formation, a collection of 12 colossal stones that jut out of the sea. At sunset, they appear dark and foreboding, but as the sun rises the colour of the rocks transform into a brilliant sandy yellow. You’ve got everything from gorgeous views to sweeping racing corners and copious amounts of fresh air, even if it’s a tad salty. What more could you want?
calibre
Stewart, the Nordschleife is the ultimate driving challenge. Unfortunately, it lost the right to host a race after Austrian Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda had a serious accident in the 1976 German Grand Prix, but it is still open to the public for a small fee of around £20. For that, you get 20 kilometres of uninterrupted road – with no speed restrictions – that features everything you could ever want in a great racing track. There are beautiful wide corners, tight hairpins and long straights where you can really get the power down. There is very little run-off, mind, as much of the track is lined with Armco barriers or ditches, so it’s advisable to ease off the pace and just enjoy the course and the views, unless you want to be calling out the RAC...
The A82, Scotland A great driving road, it boasts a combination of fast and open corners where you can feel the rush; tight and twisty sections to test out the brakes; excellent visibility for safety reasons – and of course, some impressive scenery. While the A82 doesn’t hold a glamorous name like some of its rivals, it has all the essentials in abundance. From Lowland Scotland to the western Highlands, the best section by far is the 140 kilometre stretch between Loch Lomond and Loch Ness, encompassing dazzling views of Ben Nevis – the highest mountain in the UK – and the famous Loch itself; so watch out for Nessy. Granted, it was named the most dangerous road in Britain in 2002, but if you stick to the speed limits and don’t get all Jenson Button behind the wheel, you’ll have no trouble. n

Top of The The
Range
Since launching in September 2011, the Range Rover Evoque has received more than 100 international awards. Richard Brown speaks to Land Rover Director of Design, Gerry McGovern
design
A
fter studying industrial design at the Lanchester Polytechnic (now Coventry University), Gerry McGovern attended the Royal College of Art to read automotive design. From there, he journeyed state-side, working for Chrysler in Detroit. Stints at Peugeot, BMW and Austin Rover followed before he arrived at Land Rover in 2004 as Director of Design. Since then, McGovern has overseen the evolution of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Land Rover Discovery 4 and Range Rover Evoque. McGovern is also a member of the Land Rover Board of Management. The Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham is a four-seat coupé collaboration between Range Rover and the British fashion designer. Who was the Evoque designed for? We were aiming at a younger audience, one that was perhaps more urban centric and of a more female orientation. Not that the car is specifically designed for females; it’s actually quite masculine. We wanted to design a vehicle that took Range Rover values and gave them a more compact form; smaller, more sustainable, more maneuverable in the city. It’s probably true to say the Evoque is the most designed vehicle we’ve ever done at this company.
Design shoulD noT necessArily siT in isolATion; you neeD To Think from A business perspecTive As well Did you anticipate the Evoque would do so well? We were quietly confident. What’s interesting about this success is that it has almost been the catalyst for change in our business, a realisation that Land Rover is a brand that has the ability to stretch and mean more things to more people. It’s proved that design is an incredibly powerful differentiator in the market place. Why did you invite Victoria Beckham to become involved in the project? The good thing was that she was an owner of a Range Rover so she came with a customer perspective. This vehicle is a luxury product and as a brand we’re making that transition from being the manufacturer of 4x4 vehicles to the purveyor of luxury products. The importance of getting into the mindset of a luxury consumer is very important. Victoria buys and owns a lot of luxury goods which makes her a target consumer. She’s established herself in the cutthroat world of fashion and she’s got a following of a particular age profile – females that represent some of our customer base for this particular vehicle. Of course, there’s also the PR element; she is a name and we felt that she was a good association. What did her role in the project involve? The VB version of the vehicle wasn’t about changing the design of the car. It was about giving it a different personality, different colours, different materials, different finishes. She joined our team in what we call our colour and materials area of the business, giving her views about the finishes she’d use, the types of high quality leathers that she thought would work, the stitching and those sorts of things. If you take singular elements of a car that is as unique
calibre
as the Evoque and try to redesign it, you will fail. From an architectural design standpoint, you don’t have to mess with it. You can change its personality through the use of materials and finishes. How important was it to make the car as environmentally friendly as possible? Very. We’re a brand like any other automotive company we’re very mindful of a changing world where sustainability is top of the agenda. What we’d say is there is no one solution to the issue of sustainability, it’s a combination of things, and for us it’s about selecting the technologies that allow us to maintain the essence of what we’re about. The issue is very much at the forefront of our work within the process of designing a whole new generation of vehicles. How far away are we from an all-electric 4x4? It’s about getting the right technology. The fundamental flaw with electrification is range. A lot of our vehicles are used for long distance usage, going off-road, and so range is very important. In terms of urban use, there are [electric] vehicles out there that can do it. There isn’t really an SUV that is doing it in totality; there are SUVs that are doing combinations, electrification, hybrid, etcetera. How far away are we from it? I don’t know. When there’s a problem, a solution will always come in the end. What is your most prized possession? I collect modern art. I’m a big collector of original silk screens, particularly from British painters like Patrick Heron, Paul Corfield, and Joseph Albert. I’ve also got quite a lot of vintage Italian glass. I say vintage; it’s generally from the 50s and 60s, which I think is a great design period in modernism. That exuberant post-war desire to get to the moon was reflected in a lot of American design in particular. Who have been your role models throughout your career? There’s one guy who died a couple of years ago who was not particularly well-known, a gentleman called Roy Axe. He was an automotive design leader. When I was fairly new to the business he guided me in the right direction, instilling in me a sense that design should not necessarily sit in isolation; you need to think from a business perspective as well. What would you describe as your career highlight? I’m always thinking of the next thing rather than looking back but I suppose the fact that I was put on the board of the company. Traditionally, in the automotive design world, designers don’t sit at that level because it is felt that they’re not that interested in the business as a whole. That was significant and I think that it’s playing a dividend. Design does need to sit at the top table; it’s a contributing factor to bottom line profit. Unless you have people that are either designers or design literate at the top of the business – it’s not going to happen. n The Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham is limited to a maximum of 200 vehicles to be sold worldwide and will go on sale first in China with deliveries due from October 2012. GettinG there fast From L plates to P plates in under a week, Emilia Wentworth discovers learning to drive at speed
“B
ut surely you can drive?” was a question demanded of me by an indignant friend after I had failed to fully comprehend why adding a certain gadget to his already souped-up car, would make the handling so fantastic. But I couldn’t drive. I’d been ducking out of conversations about cars and driving ever since the age of 17, when everyone started filling the sixth form car park with Corsas and Clios. However, I’m not alone. Nearly one third of all those eligible to drive in the UK do not hold a license. For one thing, it’s not easy to learn to drive. With one of the world’s most rigorous testing systems, the current DVLA theory and practical tests seem designed to keep you on your provisional license for an eternity. On another note, it’s not quick either. Once sixth form becomes university, and university becomes work, there is precious little time in most Londoners’ schedules for the hour or two each week spent journeying a painfully long learning curve that chips away at your bank balance and any excitement you ever had for getting behind the wheel. And so it was for me. The idea of getting into the driver’s seat filled me with a queasy apprehension, a milder version of the sheer terror that had made my mother vow never to take me practising again, since I clipped that parked car (I still swear that it moved) and scared that cyclist (she should have heard me coming!). A veteran of two failed tests, with a combined total of three majors and 19 minors, I thought maybe driving just wasn’t for me. But with a week of holiday booked and the grey, damp English ‘summer’ I thought I might as well try one more time. The idea of an intensive driving course appealed to me;
64
ripping the plaster off and just getting it over with, as they say. The dynamic of the Guaranteed Pass Course that I opted for with London-based Car Captain made more sense to me as well; whereas most instructors benefit from you remaining a poor driver for longer, in that you must pay for more lessons, the Guaranteed Pass Course involves paying a lump sum that will, come hell or high water, result in a pass certificate. And the faster you do it, the better for everyone. It took me five days. Structured around my timetable and driving needs, Car Captain is London-wide and found an area convenient for me to learn in. I was assessed and then taught by a very knowledgeable, mercifully patient and surprising jolly instructor, Chris, who guided me through all the skills I would need to pass my test, and then to drive safely for a lifetime; a tall task for a few days. Learning in three or four hour slots on consecutive days I built quickly on the lessons recently learned and often saw progress within the same session. Five days after starting I was already taking my test and felt cautiously confident in my ability. After successfully locating the dipstick and not stalling even once, I managed to walk away with a pass certificate consisting of only two minors. Now I have no need to shy away from motoring discussions. With a brand new pink license, and the open road before me, the only question is where to drive to next? n Car Captain 0800 8600 186 www.carcaptain.com admin@carcaptain.com

FASHION ODYSSEY
F Luxury fashion and hospitality titans merge for a fabulous hotel redesign
ashion god Karl Lagerfeld has collaborated with the renowned Hotel Métropole, Monte-Carlo.
In October 1993 he received the Lucky Strike Design Award from the Raymond Loewy Foundation and in 2007, the Trustees Award from the International Centre of Photography in New York. n www.metropole.com

travel ACTIVELY INDULGE Team romance with adventure at the Post Ranch Inn, a serene retreat situated on the Californian coast. Organic architecture embraces the dramatic beauty of the stunning cliffs, sea views and mountain vistas that surround the 39 guest rooms. Choose the Cliff Suite, an extraordinary glass-walled single structure which soars over the rocks below or the Tree House, built on nine foot stilts off the forest floor. If you’re looking to connect with the great outdoors, try sensual spa treatments, morning yoga, guided hikes, stargazing through a celestial telescope, cooking classes or whale watching. PRIME POSITION ARABIAN NIGHTS For a romantic getaway or just some much needed ‘me’ time, the Amanjena hotel is located just outside the ancient city of Marrakech, Morocco. On the southern road to Ouarzazate, it forms the gateway to the Sahara Desert. Surrounded by an oasis of palm and olive trees, the High Atlas Mountains claim the Marrakech horizon, while the Atlantic coast is just two hours away. The 18-hole Amelkis Championship
Golf Course sits immediately alongside the stunning resort, with the Royal Golf Course just a stone’s throw away. Known in Arabic as Al Medina al-Hamra, the ‘Red City’, due to its rosy-hued walls and structures, the bustling city of Marrakech was the inspiration for the hotel’s design. The resort’s walls echo the city’s old buildings and the surrounding Berber villages. WWW.AMANRESORTS.COM
ON BOARD For a British seaside break on the beautiful Cornish coastline, the Tresanton Hotel is perfect for those looking to test their sea legs. An intimate hideaway, it has only 31 rooms, all with magnificent ocean views and individually furnished with antiques and local art. Take a ride on Pinuccia, the hotel’s splendid 48-foot classic yacht, originally built to represent Italy in the Coppa D'Italia of 1939. With her slender line and tall wooden mast, she is one of the most striking boats in St Mawes harbour. From April to the end of September, the skipper will take visitors sailing around Falmouth Bay and the surrounding area, including the estuary of
the Helford and the Fal rivers. Be sure to visit the hotel eatery for a menu of fresh fish, crustaceans and organic vegetables that changes daily.
The Fairmont Hotel in Singapore holds prime real-estate position, situated at the meeting point of the city's business, shopping and cultural districts. The hotel offers 769 extravagant guest rooms and suites and a collection of 16 restaurants. As well as the Willow Stream Spa, there are other city hotel perks such as a swimming pool, tennis court and fitness centre; plenty to help unwind after back to back meetings. The Executive Club, a"hotel within a hotel", offers exclusive privileges for the most discerning leisure and business travellers. WWW.FAIRMONT.COM

HOME AWAY from home Barbados is as rich in sea, sun and rum as good old fashioned charm, finds Louise Rose
travel
W
hen you think of Barbados, it’s hard to imagine anything but a picturesque post-card scenario; a fantasy holiday paradise of tranquil white coastlines, turquoise seas lapping at your toes as you sip a rum-heavy pina colada, eyes closed to the faint sounds of calypso rhythms somewhere in the distance. And while of course the beautiful Bajan coast ticks almost every box on the seaside holiday checklist, what’s most striking about the Caribbean island is just how very English it is. So much so, neighbouring countries often refer to it as ‘Little England’ with British customs such as Sunday roasts and afternoon tea as much a cultural phenomenon as Rhianna. The combination of both the familiar and exotic render Barbados quite unique. As we approached the stunning Tamarind hotel, a beautiful resort nestled on the platinum west coast, we felt ourselves giving in to the chilled out island vibe before we’d even donned our flip flops and had our first sip of Mount Gay. Featuring 104 newly renovated and contemporary guest rooms on a long 750 foot stretch of serene beach, the hotel is ideal for couples, families, reunions and retreats. We spent our days dipping in and out of the three on-site pools, indulging in glorious massages and treatments at the intimate spa and trying our hand at the variety of motorised water sports, with varying degrees of luck and expertise. Candlelit dinners for two made our romantic getaway even more perfect, not to mention our butler-served champagne breakfast, enjoyed in the comfort of our plush, king size bed. The exotic location, combined with exceptional service and attentive staff, ensured that all we had to focus on was not getting too sunburnt, or overindulging on coconut based cocktails before a socially acceptable hour. The highlight of the trip was a private sunset catamaran cruise followed by a snooze in a hammock under the stars. And while the hotel is well catered for adults travelling alone or on honeymoon breaks, it is also family friendly, with complimentary water sports, chaperoned movie nights and the ultra-cool Club Tamarind, which is equipped with a Wii, foosball and other games. With a wealth of delicious restaurants to choose from – including the famous, Zagat-rated Daphne’s – we were hard pressed to pick a spot to dine; the Rilaks Deck offering a South Beach Miami-inspired outdoor lounge serving light snacks and cocktails to the sounds of the Caribbean, the open-air Sugar Cane Room with its full buffet including Bajan delights such as pumpkin and corn fritters, flying fish and fried plantains and 246 Bar & Restaurant, where the spectacular ocean views from the idyllic shore front take your breath away, before you’ve even sampled what the fresh fruit and vegetable bar has to offer.
connoisseur
For fine dining and gourmet Italian fare, Daphne’s is one of the best eateries in Barbados – made famous by its London counterpart and sister restaurant, Le Caprice – and is located just next door to Tamarind. Boasting a Mediterranean-deco design, the gold drapes sway romantically in the warm breeze, overlooking the ocean vistas. And the food is just as good as the ambience; don’t miss the lobster spaghetti with cherry tomatoes or the ice berries with hot white chocolate sauce – a house speciality for a reason. Barbados hosts a multitude of fine dining restaurants, including the famous Cliff, where you can expect to see A-list faces from wall to wall. Sample the delicious moo shu pancakes with Chinese roast pork, spring onions, cucumber and hoisin sauce, or the spicy tuna tartar with Asian vinaigrette, wasabi yogurt sauce, chilli oil and tobiko. The Lone Star restaurant, situated in the boutique hotel of the same name and owned by English actor Christian Robert, is certainly worth a visit, too. For traditional English tea served in bone china tea-cups with tiered trays of scones and fairy cakes, as well as a fabulously traditional Sunday roast, the Sandy Lane hotel does British luxury at its most extravagant. Away from the lavishness of the west coast and the built up south coast, the terrain is somewhat different; rolling hills of limestone and opulent lush greenery. Immense plantation households display the wealth of past settlers and the slave trade they perpetuated, with many museums documenting the fairly recent history. The capital city of Bridgetown offers lively music and street parties, duty-free shopping at cruise ship terminals and eclectic boutiques on Broad Street. If you’re up for some sporting fun, try yachting, fishing or watching a spot of cricket in the sunshine with a beer. A beachside paradise with all the trimmings, there’s no better way to escape the so-called British summer, especially when balmy climes are near to guaranteed year-round. As rich in sea, sun and rum as good old fashioned charm, Barbados offers a far flung adventure with just the right number of home comforts. n For more information visit www.tamarindbarbados.com

Timeless LUXURY Kate Hughes joins the Brazilian elite looking for tranquillity in Ponta Dos Ganchos
T
he first rule of paradise is to take off your watch. You won’t need it. Fly down from the vibrant mayhem of Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paolo to Brazil’s idyllic south coast and in under an hour or so you find the land that time forgot – a sweep of beautiful beaches, clear seas and rainforest scenery untroubled by the speedy modern world – and the majority of tourists. Brazilians know the charms of this stretch, but it’s still one of the country’s best-kept secrets. We had come looking for the perfect three-day indulgent honeymoon; our destination, Ponta dos Ganchos, on a private island near Florianopolis, one of Brazil’s most exclusive beach resorts. If you’ve come this far you might as well throw your budget to the wind and take the 30 minute helicopter transfer from the airport, as we did, ogling at the coloursaturated scenery as the pilot skimmed the coastline and pointed out Gisele Bundchen’s holiday home on the way, tucked amid the lush greenery. It might still be a secret to most, but word travels quickly
among the uber-rich and the south coast is fast becoming the destination for the discerning megastar looking for tranquility. Ponta dos Ganchos, recently voted Best Boutique Hotel in South America at the World Travel Awards, is part of that vibe. An isolated romantic hideaway set on a bay and sandwiched between the green-blue waters of the Santa Catarina coast and Atlantic rainforest vegetation, the resort has just 25 luxurious cabanas on site. But you don’t have to be a paparazzi dodger to appreciate the luxury of pure privacy and the feeling that the rest of the world is somewhere else, far, far away. There’s just nothing more splendid than swinging in a hammock on your own private deck, gazing out to a shimmering bay where the only thing on the horizon is a gently bobbing fishing boat. Our Especial Villa Esmeralda bungalow was larger than most London flats, and stacked with goodies – organic snacks, espresso machine, amazing therapeutic mattress and Egyptian cotton sheets – as well as its own sauna and plunge pool. With such touches, it’s not easy to leave the bungalow once you’ve settled into its luxurious embrace. The glamour
travel
seems to have a gravitational pull; fortunately there is a concierge on hand with a buggy, waiting to whisk you to lunch, once you summon up the strength to get out of your private Jacuzzi. Food is a feast of organic cuisine from the on-site garden and fresh, locally caught fish on the seafood grill on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Santa Catarina’s famous oysters are a particular treat – this coastal area is Brazil’s oyster capital, and its mollusks are famed for their taste, texture and delicacy. For added decadence there are no set mealtimes at Ponta dos Ganchos; you eat what you want, when you want. Breakfasts in particular were a miniature gourmet festival of delicacies served in dainty portions; ultra-light blinis, quails egg croque madames, papaya mini beignets and other tiny treats, relegating the perfectly brewed cappuccinos and freshly baked croissants to mere supporting roles. Once you’re fuelled up, there’s plenty of sunbathing and lazy swimming in the sea to take up the rest of the day. Or if you’re feeling energetic, you can choose from kayaking and sailing to ecological trails and boat trips to Anhatomirim Island or the Baía dos Golfinhos. Close to the resort you’ll find the best site for scuba diving in south Brazil; the protected biological reserve of Arvoredo Island. Kicking back in such blissful zen, the sounds of the sea, the smell of the forest and the feel of sand underfoot don’t need too much active embellishment. You can choose to go mountain biking and hiking, but we preferred to chill out at the beach on crisp white sunbeds, drinking cool Caipirinhas. We also lapped up the sunshine on

the little private stone island, reached by swimming or along a wooden catwalk, until the sun set in colours as outrageous and flamboyant as the famous Brazilian Carnival itself. My only major excursion was to the resort’s Dior spa – the only one in South America – at the tip of the peninsula, for an amazing open-air massage under a leafy canopy by the edge of the sea. On the final night we had a private dinner on the small island in front of the beach; the mouth-watering food paired with wines that romanced the flavours of our specially created menu. While the moon hung brightly in the blue inky sky and the water lapped softly against the beach shore, we agreed Ponta dos Ganchos had definitely laid on a night sensual enough to seduce anyone. We had already fallen in love with the romance of the place, and three nights just left us wanting more. Still, now we know where paradise is. n

MARSEILLE France’s second-biggest city sprawls over 16 neighbourhoods, each with something fascinating to offer, finds Margaret Kemp Where to stay:... Mama Shelter This über hip and quirky hotel has a fantastic buzzy city vibe, located on a tranquil street, close to the chic St. Julien district.Comprising 127 rooms, they are each decked out with 27-inch iMacs, Kiehl’s beauty products and free WiFi, as well as a microwave oven, mini-bar, free movies, comfy beds, gorgeous white sheets and fluffy towels. The hotel is designed by Philippe Starck, its rooms cosy yet airy, adding to the boutique style and ‘Mama loves you’ concept: a modern kibbutz (collective) atmosphere where friends can gather around a table to enjoy a meal together. Super chef Alain Senderens creates mouth-watering menus reflecting local bounty: the breakfast buffet is one not to be missed.
Where to eat... Michelin dining Lionel Levy’s Michelin-starred Une Table Au Sud (www.unetableausud.com) overlooks the Old Port, offering a fabulous view of Marseille. Keep one eye on the delicious cèpes and lobster hamburger, while taking in the giant nets, big squids and port life hubbub below. Expect unusual concoctions such as Milkshake de Bouillabaisse, a foamy fish cappuccino served in a glass with John Dory. Be sure to visit Le Petit Nice, where Chef Gérald Passédat has been running the show since 1985, having taken over from his father and succeeding in earning a third Michelin star.
What to see.. MuCEM The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations is strategically located between the historic Old Port and the new Ville de Joliette urban district. MuCEM links Fort Saint Jean’s historic towers and gardens to a new building designed by Rudy Ricciotti which takes in 26,000 square metres of exhibition space dedicated to Euro-Mediterranean civilisations: history, current ties and today’s vibrant cultures, though building work is still being carried out. While waiting for MuCEM to open in full, visit the atmospheric old Panier Quarter on the north side of the Old Port. The Centre de la Vielle Charité, a former almshouse, now hosts a library, cultural centre and the Museums of Mediterranean Archaeology, African, Oceanic and Native American art.
Don’’t miss:... Market towns At 34 Cours Julien sits Savonnerie de la Licorne, a local soap factory which still makes the original olive-oil based commodity. Walk from the Old Port to Notre Dame de la Grand Basilica and discover great shopping streets behind the Vieux Port and around Rue Paradis and Rue Saint Ferréol. Take the hop-on-hop-off bus from Quai du Port to see the city. Buy arts and crafts at the late night market along Cours d’Estienne d’Orves and take home cookies from the famous bakery, Four des Navettes – the secret recipe dates from 1781. Head to the Marché aux Puces and peruse the many stalls – live chickens are killed to order while typical Marseille style sweaters are among the colourful sights on show. n

sually when reading a review, you have to wait until the end for the all-important verdict. But I’m going to cut right to the chase. If you don’t already have a reservation for 1 Lombard Street, book now. If you have a reservation for next week, or even next month; cancel it, bring it forward, get up from your desk, put down that depressing sandwich, and go right now. The building itself is impressive; housed in a former Grade II-listed bank just opposite the Bank of England, the stunning glass cupola – a centrepiece dome designed by Italian architect Pietro Agostini – propped up by white pillars, adds to the grandeur of the experience. Opened in 1998 by former banker Soren Jessen it comprises a restaurant, brasserie, private dining and events rooms. After a long, hard look at the menu, aided by the impeccable knowledge and advice of the Assistant Manager Abi, my dining companion and I decided to ‘go easy’, bearing in mind our impending beach holiday. I went for the (small) spaghetti vongole to start, while my partner opted for the scallop ceviche, cut wafer-thin and slightly cooked in the citrus tang of the melding lime juice. Having been recommended the steak tartar, our arms were twisted, so we settled for a ‘floater’ appetiser, which turned out to be the best dish of the meal; chopped super-fine with just the right balance of tobacco spice, Worcester sauce, anchovies, capers, and everything else that goes into a steak tartar to make it taste so delicious. And if three starters weren’t enough, a wandering Charcuterie board somehow found its way to our table (the waiter had clearly noticed my partner’s eyes lingering just a little too long on his salami). For mains the Dover sole was grilled golden and super succulent while my other half’s warm duck salad was cooked to perfection, accompanied by a fruity Australian Shiraz that went down just a little too easily. Stuffed to the brim, I settled again for a ‘calorie free’ option and polished off the lemon meringue pie while my dining companion went for the signature caramelised spiced pineapple, accompanied by a syrupy sweet Hungarian dessert wine. Ten out of ten – and without a doubt number one for steak tartar. n

f your boss frowns upon hiding under your desk until the Berocca kicks in, you should probably steer clear of Floripa’s Fogo De Floripa cocktails on a school night. A spicy blend of Leblon Cachaça and home-made pomegranate syrup, Floripa’s signature drink comes topped with a hollowed out lime overflowing with flaming Wray and Nephews rum. A Brazilian themed bar on Shoreditch’s Great Eastern Street, Floripa may not be the most obvious choice for an after work jaunt. It is, however, only a ten minute walk from Liverpool Street Station and, once inside, a million miles from any hangout you’ll find in the City. Lit largely by candlelight and done up in exotic frescos, wall-mounted palms, and tropical prints, Floripa is about as unpretentious as it gets. Welcoming, easy-going bar staff set the mood, as a soundtrack of ‘Reggaeton’ (South American-styled Samba, Reggae and Dancehall beats) encourages you to lose the blazer and tie before you’ve even looked at the drinks menu – which, while offering a more than adequate array of bottled beers and new and old world wines, is all about the cocktails. Our favourites, beside the already mentioned, were the Fog Horn (£7.50) – a zingy, uplifting mix of ginger ale, Bombay Sapphire gin and lime juice – and the Mariposa 88 punch (£9), an equally refreshing (and hard hitting) merging of rum, grapefruit, and sparkling wine. Elsewhere, and for the sweet-toothed, Floripa’s Jaguar Milk (£7.50) is, essentially, a creamy dessert in a glass. From its cocktail offerings, Floripa’s Brazilian influence extends to its food menu, which, at the risk of leaving legless, you’ll want to take advantage of. Highlights included the Coxinha Baiana (£5.50), a tender and tasty Brazilian chicken snack, and the Beef Ribs (£12), which, although they look like they’ve been cremated (it’s cooked in Xingu black beer), will melt in your mouth. Visit Floripa on a weeknight and you get to swap Shoreditch for Florianópolis. Indulge in one too many of the famous cocktails, however, and it’s easy to forget you’ll be reporting back to the City for work first thing in the morning. n

et just minutes from the new, entrepreneurial ‘Tech City’ centred on Old Street Roundabout in N1,as well as right on the edge of the City, is a flagship residential development in Shoreditch. Branded Ixia, the project is the latest central London development from award-winning national house builder Crest Nicholson. The development combines contemporary design with clever technology, both externally and internally, to deliver a scheme that is both striking and stylish. Comprising one and two bedroom apartments with balconies and two and three bedroom penthouses with terraces, the open-plan properties have been designed specifically for buyers seeking a home that offers timeless, high
end specification in a hip London location. The eye-catching exterior will create a new landmark for Old Street, with its stunning exterior bronze-coloured shutters which clad the facade, allowing residents to make their own adjustments for privacy, light and shade. Internally, the apartments combine this level of style with functionality and energy efficiency. Kitchens have Siemens appliances, including wine chillers in the penthouse apartments, and boast stone work surfaces and high gloss designer kitchen units. Bathrooms have Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware, distinctive white Hansgrohe taps and all baths are double ended, giving an extra air of luxury. in the lounge and the master bedroom, while all apartments benefit from underfloor heating and comfort cooling. Crest Nicholson has a long history of developing in and around the capital and prides itself on only committing to locations where the company feels it can create something special. Ixia represents the first phase over three hundred units which will occupy central London. “We carefully tailor every aspect of our developments to their individual location. Therefore the property mix we’re creating at Ixia is sophisticated and design-led, in line with the aspirations of Ixia’s target market as well as the style-driven ethos of Shoreditch and Hoxton, both of which are on the doorstep of the development,” explains managing director Trevor Selwyn. To complement the contemporary architecture and interiors of the development, Crest Nicholson has taken a fresh look at the way information is provided to prospective purchasers. The marketing suite has been specially created for Ixia, and purchasers will be able to use the latest technology, including iPads, to browse the available properties and information about the surrounding area. Ixia residents will benefit from excellent public transport links offering easy access to the City, the West End and beyond, while the development has a plethora of restaurants, bars, independent shops and other entertainment right on its doorstep. Ixia will launch for sale on 14 June at the Hoxton Hotel and is expected to draw huge interest from a wide spectrum of potential buyers. n

The sales market in East London has had a tremendous start to the year with record prices being achieved in many developments. Prices are being driven by a number of factors, but primarily there is a shortage of stock and the pound is weak. These key factors mean that there is competition from buyers for the best apartments that become available. Many investors see East London as a great long term investment with pound per sq ft prices offering some of the most affordable stock in London, which is ideally located for those working in the financial hubs of London. While these market conditions dictate that we have a very fast moving market, vendors need to be careful when taking advice on pricing of their properties. Time and again we see vendors deciding to go to market with other agents who claim to be able to offer the world, but in fact deliver nothing. There is nothing more damaging to a property when it goes to the market at a hugely inflated price, then goes stale and necessitates reduction after reduction. If you are preparing to put your property on the market, make sure that the agent you choose can back up the figures they are quoting by providing you with at least two similar properties that they have recently sold in that development or nearby and be realistic with your expectations.
As we move towards the summer in London and what is historically the busiest time of year for lettings, uncertainty in the market is evident. Knight Frank research shows that demand and supply for rental property in London has increased from last year, however the number of new tenancies has decreased, highlighting a reluctance to commit from tenants. Demand for property is consistently strong in Canary Wharf, with professional tenants looking to be within close proximity to work; however, as mentioned when I commented in April, the uncertainty in the city job market is impacting on corporate and private tenant’s budgets. Also the upcoming summer events have invariably shifted tenant’s confidence in re-entering the market and they are increasingly choosing to renew existing tenancies. It is also important to note that rents hit an all-time high in October 2011, having risen by 26.9 per cent since mid-2009. We therefore believe that recent falls of -0.1 per cent represents the market adjusting to a weaker short-term economic environment. Whilst rents can still be expected to rise by around one per cent over the course of this year, it is important that properties are priced realistically in line with comparable evidence and market conditions.

A HELPING HAND
PROPERTY CONSULTANT SIMON BARNES EXPLAINS HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
T
here is little doubt that the current residential market is challenging, with conditions differing significantly according to postcode, which is why the expertise of the buying agent has never been more relevant. Navigating the intricacies of the buying process is something which requires skill and knowledge and a good buying agent should save you both time and money, as long as your requirements and budget are realistic. It is the role of the buying agent to do all the leg work and to source your ideal property with as little fuss and disruption to your everyday life as possible – and of course – to secure the property at the best possible price. It is he who must identify the appropriate selling agents to deal with and be aware of key properties, preferably before they come to the open market. This is where the service becomes so invaluable, because acting in the best interest of the buyer crucially requires your buying agent to put you at the front of the queue. This is particularly relevant in
a buoyant market when competition for sought after properties can be fierce. Typically, a respected buying agent will be instructed to act on behalf of only a handful of clients at any one time and can therefore give each and every one a high level of personal service. The more established estate agents will always be keen to work with buying agents who have been retained by their clients and in so doing have demonstrated a serious commitment to buying a property as this also ensures that they can act in the best interests of the vendor. Therefore being represented in this way will ensure a definite advantage hence the need for your buying agent to cultivate strong relationships with key agents and vice versa. If you are serious about buying and want to find the home which is exactly right for you, then my advice would always be to ensure you are well represented by an established and well informed buying agent. n
