hile out riding in 1711, it was HRH Queen Anne who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot, exclaiming it looked an ideal place for “horses to gallop at full stretch”. The jewel in the crown of the British social calendar and an institution as entrenched in heritage as obsessing over the weather, Royal Ascot has remained a true English pasttime for almost three centuries. A unique, stand-alone tradition in the societal agenda, the Royal Meeting falls between 19 and 23 June.

s our small plane circled the island below, we looked down on to a castaway’s spit of land; a verdant oasis fringed with astonishingly white sand, lapped by the cerulean blues of the Indian Ocean. Desroches Island was already scoring highly on the paradise checklist. Connected to Mahe by a daily 40-minute flight, Desroches – a remote coral atoll and part of the Amirantes group of islands – is the most far-flung resort in the Seychelles. The island, approximately six kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres across at its widest point, is surrounded by 14 kilometres of beaches and around 70 kilometres of reef. With no other islands for miles and more giant tortoises than guests, it’s the ultimate getaway and perfect for a secluded honeymoon. The resort itself is a masterclass in laid-back beach chic. The communal areas are arranged around a sparkling T-shaped swimming pool, surrounded with comfortable daybeds sitting under white canvas umbrellas and bamboo beach hammocks that look out to sea. The open-sided restaurant and bar are filled with furniture that’s custommade on the island and lovely decorative touches, such as raffia lampshades that resemble exotic sea creatures. Only a pebble’s throw from the ocean, our Beach Retreat was cool, calm and contemporary, the epitome of barefoot luxury with our own plunge pool in which to cool off. A huge bed sat on gleaming wooden floors under a netting cocoon, while shell-encrusted lampshades and driftwoodframe mirrors added to the marine theme. Our flat-screen TV was cleverly hidden away in a giant packing crate at the foot of the bed and in the enormous, airy bathroom, the tub was large enough to share, or you could opt for a his-and-hers alfresco shower. Artfully combining inside and outside spaces, sliding glass doors opened onto a veranda where a large sofa was clad in sea-coloured fabric, overlooking a private garden flanked with tropical foliage. The only sounds were birdsong, the rustle of palm trees in the breeze and waves gently lapping the shore. You can spend your days at Desroches in blissful indolence, flitting from day bed to hammock, plunge pool to ocean. Head to the spa, have an idyllic picnic on a shellstrewn beach, or get active; choose from a game of floodlit tennis, snorkelling and scuba-diving among the incredible marine life, fly-fishing in the shallows or taking on the big game fish. Our bicycles enabled us to explore the very flat island at our own pace, while its size allowed us to go for hours without seeing another soul. We cycled along dirt paths under the shade of whispering casuarina trees to the rustic luxury of the Escape Spa for its signature shell massage, which involved being scrubbed, wrapped and kneaded with hot ceramic shells into a state of utter relaxation. The resort is committed to protecting the island’s wildlife and environment, and early one morning we walked along the shore with the resident conservationist, logging wildlife activity as we went. We watched giant eagle rays glide throuh the waters and blue-grey herons looking for breakfast, while ghost crabs scuttled out of our path. There are about 250 hawksbill turtles on the island and we were lucky enough to spot one making her way back to the sea after laying her eggs. With the reef line so close to the island, it’s easy for us to join her in some offshore snorkelling. We borrowed masks,

There are a number of ways to enjoy the ceremony. Choose to select an exclusive spot and you can watch the pageantry unfold in style. Boasting a superb position, the Trackside Club Lounge is one of the closest fine dining restaurants to the course and holds a private balcony. The experience includes a Royal Enclosure guest badge and an eclectic dining experience, accompanied by a fine wine, champagne and Pimm’s reception. Full afternoon tea with strawberries and cream is also served. n

A Bumper Year for Luxury British Brands A new Walpole study highlights the importance of 2012 to the UK’s luxury goods industry, as well as the expectations and issues facing leading luxury brands, reports Richard Brown

I

n the year that Walpole has identified the opportunity to position Britain as the luxury destination of the world, the company has published a report suggesting the UK luxury sector will grow by 8.5 per cent this year. Now in its third installment, the Walpole and Ledbury UK Benchmark Study is one of the most comprehensive analyses of the UK’s luxury industry and the 2012 report predicts the industry to achieve forecasts of £9.1 billion within the next three years. Formed in 1990 as a not-for-profit organisation to further the interests of the British luxury sector, Walpole could hardly have expected the remarkable rise in the popularity

of our home-grown goods, particularly among the swelling middle classes of the Far East. The growth of countries, China in particular, and their appetite for made-in-Britain goods has certainly made Walpole’s job a lot easier; many UK-based brands are already expecting 2012 to be a bumper year for international sales. The report goes on to highlight how British luxury remains popular with the international consumer; whether via tourism to the UK or British brands overseas, 72 per cent of UK luxury brands have a presence outside the country. Breaking its findings down further, the report notes that 37 per cent of these are already present in China, with a further 27 per cent having made

plans to enter the market in the future. This interest is not just in the major (Tier 1) cities like Beijing and Shanghai; 67 per cent of those looking at the country are investigating Tier 3 cities, those with populations under 500,000. While the fact that brands are looking to expand into the fast-growing markets of East Asia and Africa may be old news, the report also suggested that despite the interest in the British luxury industry in China, the UK is falling behind its European peers in attracting the Chinese shopper. The biggest Chinese shopping windows, such as Chinese New Year and Golden Week (two annual seven-day national holidays implemented in China in 2000), have no impact on sales for 71 per cent of the sector. Outside of London, and consistent with last year, Edinburgh and Manchester are closely tied as the next most important luxury hubs in the UK, although the impact of the internet means that the number of in-store sales may be set to decline in years to come. 50 per cent of UK luxury brands are seeing more online-only clients – reaffirming the importance of this sales channel as an opportunity for global expansion for companies of all sizes, and good news for those without the capital to fund boutiques in places like Bond Street and Knightsbridge. Having already highlighted the potential of 2012 as a year to showcase the best of British, Walpole’s report confirms the importance of the coming months for many companies; 63 per cent of British luxury brands believe the 2012 Olympics Games will positively impact their sales, with 20 per cent of respondents anticipating a double-digit rise in sales as a direct consequence. The Diamond Jubilee celebrations that will take place in June is something that 58 per cent of high-end brands believe will also bring a noticeable increase in sales. “With the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, 2012 puts the UK firmly in the global spotlight at a time when British brands are already enjoying a resurgence of popularity around the world,” says Guy Salter, Deputy Chairman of Walpole. “British luxury brands are optimistic about the impact of these events. The results of the study underline the positive outlook for the future of the British luxury industry as a whole.” Despite the upbeat nature of the report, Walpole has warned the UK Government, and the industry as a whole, that it needs to support British luxury brands or

risk losing out on the potential benefits of the London 2012 Olympics. Given that Great Britain is home to many of the world’s most iconic and internationally renowned luxury brands, tourist destinations and cultural attractions, the organisation believes that this year is the time to cement the country’s reputation as the leading destination within the global luxury goods industry. While Britain’s luxury industry is currently very strong, with the likes of Burberry and Mulberry planning on opening new stores around the world, it cannot afford to get complacent. According to the report, the critical challenge facing the British luxury industry is reaching the next generation of consumers, whether that be at home or overseas, and, thanks to the increasing number of sales made over the internet, effective e-business. Nevertheless, the overriding tone of the report is positive and underlines above all the importance of the international market to the UK industry. “Despite an uncertain economic picture in the short term, British luxury brands are upbeat about 2012, not only due to planned domestic celebrations, but also because of the brands’ growing international footprint,” says James Lawson, Director at Ledbury Research whose findings were based on interviews with high net worth individuals and luxury consumers from around the world. “The report shows it’s no longer a case of concentrating on China, but looking across Asia, be it Korea, Vietnam or Indonesia, as well as the Middle East, Latin America and Africa too.” n

The Walpole Ledbury Research UK Luxury Benchmark study involves the participation of 84 senior luxury executives and is powered by an analysis of more than 1,600 financial statements of companies operating in the UK luxury market.

eneath the helmet, under that unruly curly hair, inside the cranium, there is something we don’t know, something beyond scientific measure. Something that allows him to soar, to roam a territory of sport that, forget us, even those who are gifted enough to play alongside him cannot even fathom. When he goes out to bat, people switch on their television sets and switch off their lives.”

This praise was bestowed by BBC Sports upon Sachin Tendulkar, the only cricketer in the world to have accomplished the feat of scoring 100 centuries in international cricket and widely praised as the best in history. Tendulkar is an ambassador for luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet and together with its elite group of top sportsmen – Messi, Schumacher, McIlroy and Djokovic, to name but a few – he demonstrates how much a sport can bring people together. I spoke to the company’s CEO Philippe Merk about the brand’s sporting connections and the 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak timepiece (p. 18). Ahead of the biggest sporting competition hosted by our nation since 1948, set to dominate headlines and tube lines when the London 2012 Olympic Games roll into town, this issue celebrates the traditional events hosted each year between May and September. These may hold varying levels of appeal for you but whether

you’re interested in cricket or croquet, racing or rugby, football, polo, golf or tennis, Kari Rosenberg ensures you know exactly what’s happening when; note down now what you don’t want to miss (p. 10). If the thought of staying in London this summer is a little too much, Richard Brown has uncovered some of the best sporting events worth travelling to (p. 88): organise a trip to Singapore in September to catch the Grand Prix; soak up the sun in Sri Lanka during the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup in October; or fit in an MLB World Series baseball game during a holiday to America to find out why this sport attracts 73 million attendees each season. Sometimes it’s best not to take your sport too seriously though; Lee Brooks recounts some of the most nail-bitingly painful sporting bottlers we have witnessed in the last two decades (p. 46). If sport holds no appeal whatsoever, dream of the Seychelles (p. 84), plan your perfect dinner party with Jo Malone London (p. 76) and consider investing in wine; according to the experts, 2012 is a great year (p. 38). We quite agree.

Chanel’s first diamond jewellery collection in 1932 proved a sparkling light amid the recessive gloom of that decade and its collections have shone ever since

T

he freedom to imagine a life devoid of financial restraint is the ultimate escapism, one where goals such as owning your own yacht become easily aspirational. In 1932, in the midst of an economic downturn, Gabrielle Chanel understood that a glimmer of hope can be found within the sparkle of a diamond. “...During the economic recession, in every sphere of life, there emerged an instinctive desire for authenticity and amusing trinkets were once again put into their proper perspective,” she wrote of the launch of her 1932 Exhibition de Bijoux en Diamants.

Such wisdom has prevailed to this day and the French fashion house has picked the ideal time to pay tribute to this inaugural exhibition, showcasing the finest in diamond jewellery with a world tour of one-off pieces celebrating the brand’s 80th fine jewellery anniversary. The jewels were previewed in Paris at Couture Week, echoing the themes of the original display, which had taken place in a mirrored room on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The cosmos-inspired, delicate Céleste brooch below, an intricate white gold, diamond and pearl creation, truly encapsulates the opulence of the collection. n

We prefer not to be measured by dimensions. Unless it’s a new dimension of accuracy.

No fewer than four exceptional mechanisms enhance the precision of the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite”: the tiny fusée-and-chain transmission, the delicate tourbillon, the ultra-thin Lange balance spring, and – not least – the patented stop-seconds device for the tourbillon which makes it possible to

set the watch with one-second accuracy in the first place. Never before has an A. Lange & Söhne watch been endowed with so many complications that simultaneously enhance its rate accuracy, settability, and readability. And so, this remarkable timepiece truly deserves the honorary attribute “Pour le Mérite”.

Time Traveller One of the trends noticeable at this year’s Baselworld was the industry’s increasing fondness for the worldtimer – a timepiece that can simultaneously tell you the time in up to 37 time zones across the world. Our favourites came courtesy of Breitling, Bremont and Zenith. Featuring Breitling’s own in-house movement, the striking Transocean Chrono Unitime revisits history by paying homage to an automatic watch known as Unitime developed by the company some 60 years ago.

Testament to the detail that goes into the design process, Bremont’s first worldtimer, the ALT1-WT, is made from a stainless steel more than six times as scratch resistant as the steel used in regular watches. It also boasts a sapphire crystalcoated dial that has been through nine phases of anti-reflective treatment. Our favourite worldtimer, however, remains Zenith’s Pilot Doublematic. Not only is the 439-piece watch stunning to look at but it also comes with a push-button operated alarm clock and has a power reserve of 50 hours.

If this is the case, Audemars Piguet can only be considered a leader in its field. This roll-call lists some of the greatest sportsmen in the world and all happen to be ambassadors of AP. Why? The brand states that it’s because “they come from different fields but they share our love of creativity and independence.” This may be true but I’d argue that this impressive lineup embodies the brand philosophy “to break the rules, you must first master them,” even more, especially if you replace ‘rules’ with ‘records’. Tendulkar, for example, the most successful cricketer in history, has perfected his craft to such an extent that he recently became the first batsman to score 100 centuries at international level, mastering the rules and then defying every limitation in terms of age, injury and level of success. This rule-breaking slogan forms a key part of the new ad campaign and concerns one particular timepiece from the AP stable; the iconic Royal Oak. This year sees the 40th anniversary of the watch that sent shockwaves through the industry in 1972 as the first haute horology sports watch to treat steel as a precious metal. The principle behind it four decades ago was “Body of steel, heart of gold” and apparently, legend has it that this model, immediately recognizable thanks to its octagonal bezel secured by eight hexagonal screws, was designed in one night. Its name

collection

and its design have an ancient royal and naval heritage; in 1651, King Charles II found refuge from pursuers in the hollow of an ancient oak and the moniker Royal Oak was subsequently adopted by the Royal Navy for a series of vessels, which then distinguished themselves in wartime action. The porthole, a symbol of the high seas, then became the starting point in terms of design. It is surely a mark of the status of this watch that CEO Philippe Merk chooses to wear the Extra-Thin Royal Oak 15202 and that the company is celebrating the end of its fourth decade by means of a series of unique, ephemeral exhibitions around the world: “It is the first time we have put together 100 unique Royal Oak timepieces, for Royal Oak fans around the world.” For this exhibition, launched in New York in March and travelling to main cities around the world for the rest of the year, Audemars has partnered with Dan Holdsworth, Quayola and Sebastien Agnesseens; “The work reveals the connection between the relationship of man and nature, as well as man and time-keeping. It shows how watchmaking began amongst the farmers of the Vallée de Joux, the birthplace of Audemars Piguet, and how the incredible complex movements made today were created because of man’s curiosity and quest to discover the mysteries of nature.” However, despite being so synonymous with the brand, the Royal Oak is relatively young within AP’s history, which stretches back to 1875. Passionate about watchmaking and mastering the art of precision, JulesLouis Audemars joined forces with Edward-Auguste Piguet to develop and craft watches equipped with complex

19

mechanisms. Remarkably, Audemars Piguet has never since left the hands of the descendants of its founding families, the oldest of the Swiss fine watchmaking manufacturers still able to boast this accolade. Merk, who came to the family business from Maurice Lacroix – where he had received “an excellent introduction to the watch industry” – deems being part of such a reputed company and a leader in the luxury timepieces industry “a challenging, intense and rewarding experience.” He praises the company for qualities including a spirit of independence – “a true sign of stability”, a rich heritage, strong origins and values, years of experience and a shared family vision. Merk is ideally placed to comment on recent changes and trends in luxury watchmaking, “such a volatile industry where pressure is high and short term decisions can cause irreversible mistakes.” He agrees that consumer behaviour has evolved noticeably since the crisis: “There are less impulsive purchases and people think more in terms of investment rather than coup de coeur [impulse buys]. Consumers went back to basics, to the essence of watchmaking and to high-end or luxury brands that have strong foundations and origins like Audemars Piguet. The crisis has re-centred the market on more timeless values.” Nor can one ignore the rapidly growing markets in Asia and Latin America, “taking the lead [in] creating a whole new set of customer groups.” Of importance, Merk also notes, is the rise of new

media and ways of communicating: “Brands are more than ever directly exposed to their customers who are increasingly knowledgeable and who through social media and networking have become opinion leaders.” I find this particularly interesting; in other areas of the luxury industries, such as fashion, the companies paying the most attention to digital and social media, as demonstrated by industry leader Burberry, are powering ahead of their competition. It bodes well that AP, despite being a venerable family watchmaking business, is firmly anchored in the technology-driven 21st century. And this is what distinguishes Audemars Piguet from its competitors; “on the one hand, the combination of history, origins, mastery, artistry and on the other, extraordinary modernity and progressive design. While other brands may like to be seen as heirlooms, Audemars Piguet is a brand for the here and now, to be worn by connoisseurs who respect the past but are making their own future.” Is it possible to describe a typical wearer of the brand? “AP lovers are successful men and women with a strong personality who appreciate a certain avantgardism while respecting the canons and criterions of Haute Horlogerie. They are people who share Audemars Piguet’s values of passion, inspiration, exclusivity; they love the idea of having the ultimate luxury timepiece that offers the best of both worlds, traditional high watchmaking with innovative designs.”

interview

collection

The biggest pool of AP lovers is to be found in Asia, currently the biggest market in sales, closely followed by Europe: “The Asian market is well informed on luxury... [and] they are great AP enthusiasts who follow the brand closely.” With regards to the future, as seems to be the consensus across the luxury industry, “one can safely assume that the Asian market is going to remain strong over the next few years while European markets get on the road to recovery.” For Audemars Piguet at least, continuity is the key word and in terms of expansion, in addition to 22 Audemars Piguet boutiques worldwide, “there is a number of boutiques undergoing renovations and scheduled to open in 2012, mainly based in Europe, the Middle East and the United States.” 2012 also sees the company celebrating two decades of the Audemars Piguet Foundation. This was created on the Royal Oak’s 20th anniversary; devoted from the outset to the cause of reforestation, for the last eight years, the Foundation has spearheaded worldwide environmental education for children and newest ventures include the restoration of 500 hectares of woodland at 17 locations in Scotland, the training of biodiversity guards in Ecuador, the revitalization of mangroves in Senegal, and tree-planting and support for practical environmental education in the Jaipur District in India. It seems that Audemars Piguet has both its head and its heart in the right place. n www.audemarspiguet.com

London has been ranked a top global city by the A.T. Kearney Global Cities Index, based on business, culture and politics

ondon remains one of the world’s most global cities, according to the 2012 A.T. Kearney Global Cities Index (GCI), released in collaboration with Bloomberg. Meanwhile, major emerging market cities strengthened their ability to challenge global leaders in the next ten to 20 years. The GCI provides a unique measure of international engagement for 66 cities across five dimensions – Business Activity, Human Capital, Information Exchange, Cultural Experience and Political Engagement. Despite the financial turmoil of the past few

years, London and New York have consistently led the past publication rankings, while Paris and Tokyo always sit far above the rest of the top ten. The 2012 edition includes the Emerging Cities Outlook, a forward-looking measurement of developing cities which have the potential to improve their global standing in future years. Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei top this newly introduced perspective. Germany is the only European country with three cities ranking in the top half of the 2012 Index, although no German city has ever been ranked among the top ten Global Cities.

Breaking its findings down further, the report notes that 37 per cent of these are already present in China, with a further 27 per cent having made

feature

plans to enter the market in the future. The results of the study underline the positive outlook for the future of the British luxury industry as a whole.” Despite the upbeat nature of the report, Walpole has warned the UK Government, and the industry as a whole, that it needs to support British luxury brands or

comment

risk losing out on the potential benefits of the London 2012 Olympics.

A Fine Time For Fine Wine Expert wine investor Peter Shakeshaft explains why the rest of 2012 could provide the perfect time to expand your investment portfolio The deterioration of the global economy over the last few years has had countless repercussions. From the man on the street struggling to cope with the inflated basic costs of living to the currency investor who has seen his portfolio demolished, it has affected everyone. Despite the media climate of doom and gloom, for the perceptive and shrewd investor there are still opportunities to make money. The growth of alternative investments has been huge in the last five years, and while equity once dominated the portfolios of investors, it is now becoming more common to find commodities such as precious metals or assets such as fine wine featuring highly on the investor radar. Joan Collins once famously said: “Age is just a number. It’s totally irrelevant unless, of course, you happen to be a bottle of wine.” Time means everything in the wine industry and 2012 is an incredibly exciting time to invest in fine wine, often referred to as “liquid gold”. Over the last five years, fine wine investment has delivered double digit annual growth of 66 per cent. However, this year, more than ever, a unique set of circumstances have come together to provide the perfect conditions to consider investing in an asset class which has traditionally performed well in times of recession.

38

Wine follows the ‘rule of three’ that is applicable to alternative investments. Firstly, and crucially, it is a finite resource. Each Château produces between 12 and 18 thousand cases per vintage, meaning that there is only a limited supply of each yield. Naturally, therefore, the more a particular vintage gets drunk, the more valuable the remaining cases become. Secondly, it is tangible; you can put it in your cellar overnight and sleep safe in the knowledge that it will be there in the morning, thus removing the risk of the turbulent equity markets. Thirdly, it will diversify a portfolio. In turbulent economic times, the best portfolios are diverse, avoiding the situation of putting all of your eggs in one basket. In addition to diversifying your portfolio, there is also the opportunity for diversity within the wine investment market, with a number of Châteaux, vintages and stages (en primeur or in bottle) to invest in. This diversity is a rare opportunity in the investment world; while gold is simply gold, and silver is simply silver, with wine you are given the selection of a number of options. For people with large amounts of funds to invest, the Premier Cru, or First Growth, wines can cost around £10,000 per case, but for those with less investment capital, Second Growth wines, which are still of high investment quality, can be purchased for as little as £1,000 to 2,000.

investment

Those are the foundations that make wine a solid investment. What make it a great investment are certain conditions apparent this year. American wine expert Robert Parker is the leading global authority when it comes to appraising the quality of wine, and in particular his review of the investment grade wines of Bordeaux are much anticipated by the market. Parker’s scores grade the quality of wine out of 100 points, in which investment quality wines generally command a score of more than 90 points and the truly extraordinary rate between 96 – 100 points. Wines are scored each year at en primeur stage (following the previous Autumn harvest). These wines will remain in cask for up to three years and will then be tasted and scored again as they go into bottle. The 2009 vintage was scored at the beginning of March and Parker has determined that 2009 is recorded as the best vintage in modern times; awarding a record 19 Châteaux the perfect 100. These scores have a huge impact on the investment market and have already driven up prices as investors clamour for the finest wine ever made. The effect Parker’s scores can have on the investment market are immense. In just 24 hours following Parker releasing his scores, the market value of the 2009 Bordeaux moved in excess of $100 million (approximately £63 million). quite remarkable. The Cos d’Estournel, for example, jumped up by approximately 35 per cent in three months, from £2,595 at the end of 2011 to £3,500 following the release of Parker’s scores. The Smith Haut-Lafitte, meanwhile, nearly doubled in value overnight, increasing from £700 pre-scores to a trading price of £1,300 once the scores were released. Elsewhere, though the Eurozone remains locked in crisis, the BRIC countries continue to show impressive growth, in particular in China which is having a huge knock-on effect on the wine market. China recently reported that its economic growth had slowed but was still at 8.9 per cent in the fourth quarter for 2011. Indeed, growth from the year as a whole was down from 10.3 per cent in 2010 but still remains strong at 9.2 per cent. The rapid growth has seen a significant amount of new wealth develop in the country, thus breeding a new affluent class who are unafraid to show it off. In recent years there has been a large amount of fine wine consumed in China. The effect is twofold; not only is there a greater demand which drives up prices but also the more that gets drunk, the rarer it becomes, which again impacts on value. Tax changes expected in India later this year could potentially instigate a boom in fine wine importation, there too adding to the global appetite for an already finite supply and presenting a further significant opportunity for investors. Fine wine is increasingly a valid investment option for the man on the street. What isn’t so well understood by the average investor is that some of the finest vintages can be bought for as little as £1-2,000 per case with some of the ‘Super Seconds’ emerging as superb investment grade brands. With all of the conditions mentioned above in place, the time has never been better for investors to move into the wine market for the first time. If, as some predict, the world ends in 2012, then at least during the Armageddon you are left with a commodity that you can drink. n

Investing at the Frontier As investment trends go, the appeal of capitalising on emerging market economies has become increasingly popular. Martin Bamford explains why

T

he booming population growth in some of the largest emerging markets – including, but not limited to China – suggests an opportunity to sell greater volumes of goods and services to new consumers. At the same time, the demographics in many of these emerging markets are leaning towards growing affluence; where regions previously consisted of farming communities, there are now new cities. More city dwellers means a greater demand for luxury goods and other items that tend to form the trappings of wealth. Much of the economic growth we have seen in emerging markets over the past decade has been driven by governments, while big investments in infrastructure resulted in high levels of economic growth year after year. As the economy grew, so did company valuations and property prices. And then the world economy crashed. The global financial crisis should have been less damaging in emerging markets, where the savings to debt ratios are far better than in most Western economies. Despite a more stable foundation, share prices across most emerging market economies also took a dive and investors experienced severe levels of volatility. As the world economy slowly recovers, the emerging markets’ investment story remains compelling, although valuations are starting to look expensive. Prospects for big investment returns look less likely today than they did at the start of the emerging market growth cycle. Investors looking for the large potential returns from higher risk investment markets are starting to look at the frontiers of emerging markets as a result.

Emerging market investing used to be dominated by the BRIC nations; Brazil, Russia, India and China. As these economies have continued to grow, some argue they are no longer as ‘emerging’ as they once were, as new areas promising high return investments are uncovered. Over the next few years, expect to hear MINT and CIVETS enter the mainstream investor dictionary. The MINT nations are Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey and of the four, Indonesia has the closest attributes to an emerging market economy, with a larger population than either Brazil or Russia and an ambitious goal to become a top 10 global economy by 2025. CIVETS was an acronym coined by Robert Ward, Global Forecasting Director at the Economist Intelligence Unit back in 2009. It comprises Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and South Africa, although depending on which fund managers you listen to, South Africa should really form part of the BRIC (well, BRICS) acronym as an established emerging market and gateway to sub-Saharan Africa. Whether an investor looking solely for merging market exposure is best suited to a BRIC fund or a fund investing in a broader range of emerging markets is a matter of objectives and tolerance to risk. The same will hold true when fund managers launch a plethora of MINT and CIVETS funds in due course. Investing in frontier markets means substantial risks for investors, not least the currency and political risks associated with investing in these regions. However, as part of a well diversified portfolio designed for the long-term, these regions can make a useful addition to more traditional investment areas. n

Wellness in the Workplace With the Olympic Games sure to spur Londoners into getting fitter, Clare Murray suggests how employers can encourage their workers to adopt a more healthy lifestyle

‘Work-life balance’ has become a key phrase in the business world recently. Employers realise that individual employees are an organisation’s key resource. So to retain the best talent, increase productivity and keep their employees healthy, they need to take extra steps and encourage new healthy lifestyle initiatives. Employers have traditionally offered corporate rates for gym memberships to their employees and company-sponsored races are popular as well, providing an opportunity to get fit while team building. In addition, boosting Mayor Boris Johnson’s support for bikes in London, the government’s Green Transport plan has a tax exemption which allows employers to provide cycles and safety equipment to employees as a tax-free benefit. In practice, employees ‘hire’ the bikes from their employers, purchasing them at the end of the salary sacrifice period at fair market value. It’s estimated that employees burn 8,931 calories a month cycling to work. More employers are offering private health care schemes which give financial incentives for completing annual physicals. It is also common to see ‘wellness’ days, where employers provide access to nurses in the office who carry out routine health checks. Other events include programmes about healthy eating and relaxation techniques, including methods such as yoga and massage.

Employer handbooks include sections on smoking and alcohol. Since July 2007, smoking in an enclosed workplace has been illegal. Given that there are potential penalties for both employees and employers if there are breaches, employers commonly set out their no smoking policy in writing. It is important that the policy has been properly communicated and staff members trained in its contents. Drinking and/or being under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs at work is likely to constitute gross misconduct in most circumstances. Handbooks should set out the disciplinary consequences of such actions. Last May, the government announced that it was consulting on extending the right to work flexibly to all employees (not just those with children or those who are carers). The intention is clearly to bring greater flexibility to the work place for all employees, recognising that the traditional nine-to-five model is not always appropriate. How such legislation would be implemented remains to be seen; balancing the needs of working parents and carers and those of workers without such commitments could prove a logistical challenge for many employers. The government is yet to set a date for when this will be introduced. Greater enjoyment of work, enthusiasm, fewer sickness absences and an improved employer brand are just some of the benefits of promoting health in the workplace. n

C Combining luxury lifestyle aesthetics and motor-yacht mechanics, the Alpha 76 Express won’t fail to impress

heoy Lee, the Hong Kong-based yacht builder, has established its first independent dealership in Europe. Based in Nice, Cheoy Lee Riviera is the brainchild of former Saatchi & Saatchi director Nick Lockett and marine engineer Athos Cleanthous, who are together planning to revitalise the highly regarded brand, which has been at the forefront of marine innovation for 148 years. Marking a dramatic departure in styling, Cheoy Lee Riviera has launched the Alpha 76 Express; fast-cruising, sleek and decadent, it is the company’s first express-style motor-yacht.

Designed by Michael Peters, it combines a racing thrill with everything you’d expect in terms of luxury, boasting a contemporary design for its spacious interior and a top speed of more than 40 knots. Features include alfresco dining, a Jacuzzi, a cocktail bar, a full-sized tender in the stern garage and an extra-large swim platform. The centred helm seat provides maximum visibility as well as comfort and style, with easy access to the built-in controls on the armrest. All structural components are bonded to the hull for the utmost in strength and integrity. n

Tim Henman So popular he had a hill named after him, Tim Henman and his love affair with Wimbledon characterised British summers for nigh on a decade. The hype, the hope and the belief that Britain would finally get its first male grand slam since Fred Perry in 1936 reached boiling point each June as Tiger Tim, in his immaculate whites, brought his brand of serve and volley tennis to the All England Club. Unfortunately a certain Pete Sampras was just that little

bit better. There was no shame in losing to Pistol Pete, one of the greatest grass court players of all time, so when the American was knocked out in 2001 and only unseeded Goran Ivanisevic stood in the way of a first-ever final, this should have been Henman’s year. But it wasn’t. An impromptu rain shower when two sets to one up and a bad case of stage fright meant Henman’s, and the nation’s, dreams were over for another year. Again.

Jimmy White

Jean van de Velde

After five frustrating World final defeats, Jimmy White had his best ever chance to break his Crucible hoodoo in the 1994 final. Two years previously, he had led Stephen Hendry 14-8 before self-destructing, losing ten straight frames to lose the match. But in 1994, the Whirlwind uncharacteristically recovered from the brink of defeat against his archrival to hold his nerve and knock in a 75 clearance which levelled the match 17-17 and forced a final frame shoot-out. To the delight of his faithful supporters, he moved to within a handful of pots to put the frame, and the championship, out of Hendry’s reach. But he missed a straight-forward black off the spot by miles to let Hendry back in. The Scot didn’t need asking twice and cleared up to secure his fifth title and third successive final victory over White. The Whirlwind never recovered and his career was all but over.

A relative unknown golfer, Frenchman Jean van de Velde arrived at Carnoustie for the 1999 Open amid very little fanfare. Approaching the final hole on Sunday afternoon, he found himself three shots up at the top of the leaderboard. All he had to do was play percentage golf, playing safe onto the final green where he could two, even maybe three putt, for a shock victory. But that wasn’t the Frenchman’s style. Oh no. He shanked his tee-shot into the grandstand with the ball rolling into Carnoustie’s legendary thick rough. Most in his position would just pitch it back onto the fairway and move on, but van de Velde went for broke and hacked it straight into the water. With his trousers rolled up, the Frenchman waded in after it but decided to sensibly take a drop – only to land his next shot in the bunker. Mercifully, he eventually got ball in hole but by then his confidence was shot, and Scot Paul Lawrie swooped in to win a four-hole play-off.

Mark Webber Most racing drivers who reach Formula 1 never have the chance to get behind the wheel of a car capable of challenging for the world title and when Mark Webber joined midfield runners Red Bull in 2007, after unsuccessful stints at Minardi, Jaguar and Williams, it looked like the Australian would join that evergrowing list. But three years later, he found himself with a Red Bull car that was suddenly quick enough to win the championship. This was Webber’s chance at glory and, with three races to go, it looked like he’d grabbed it with both hands. He was 14 points ahead of the field and on the form of his life when he arrived in Korea. But in treacherous conditions, the Australian binned his car when running second to surrender the championship lead. He finished second in Brazil two weeks later then crumbled under the expectation in the season finale in Abu Dhabi and trundled home eighth. To rub salt into the wounds, his team-mate Sebastian Vettel overturned a 15-point deficit to win his maiden title.

Jana Novotna Jana Novotna shocked everyone, including herself, when she found the best tennis of her career to lead Steffi Graf 6-7, 6-1, 4-1 in the 1993 Wimbledon final. The Czech looked inspired, moving to 40-30 in the sixth game with consummate ease and had a service point for a 5-1 lead. But Novotna suddenly threw in a double-fault and from there the crowd saw one of the most sensational collapses of all time. The Czech failed to win another game as Graf needed just ten minutes to wrap up her fifth title. At the prizegiving ceremony, Novotna struggled to contain her emotions and ended up blubbing uncontrollably on the shoulder of the Duchess of Kent who was trying to console her. Fortunately for the Czech, she had the opportunity to banish her demons with victory over Natalie Tauziat in the final five years later – and even then she didn’t make it easy. n

AC Milan

photogolfer / shutterstock.com

It should have been straightforward for Italian giants AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final, and for the first 45 minutes, it was. The six-time winners, who were appearing in their second European final in three years, were ruthlessly efficient as they eased to a 3-0 lead against Liverpool. The Rossoneri jogged into the dressing room at half-time, saluting the fans as if they’d already won the prized European Cup but little did they know that next door captain Steven Gerrard was giving his team an almighty tongue-lashing which would inspire them to one of the greatest comebacks of all time. The Reds smashed three goals in six crazy minutes to leave the Italians shellshocked. Andrei Shevchenko should still have won it for Milan, but had two point-blank shots saved and then promptly saw his penalty saved in the shoot-out leaving Liverpool to secure an unlikely, and memorable, victory.

Bringing Polo Back Home Seventy years after polo disappeared from the hallowed turf of The Hurlingham Club, MINT Polo in the Park reintroduced the sport to its traditional home. Four years later, the annual tournament continues to captivate the capital

T

oday, the confines of The Hurlingham Club exist as one of the capital’s most refined private members’ clubs, known for its manicured grounds and quintessentially English traditions. It was, however, the Club’s association with polo that brought it to the attention of the world. That association ebbed 72 years ago when the sport that had contributed to Hurlingham’s success stopped being played at the Club. Then, nearly three quarters of a century later, financial brokers MINT helped to bring the game back home. Now, once every June, The Hurlingham Club hosts MINT Polo in the Park: Europe’s fastest growing polo tournament. Six teams, each representing global cities, play over a three day period using adapted rules, created to provide a faster, freer-flowing game. Reviving the tradition of polo at Hurlingham, the tournament breathes new life into a club that traces its history back over 200 years.

The Formation Until the 18th century, what now stands as The Hurlingham Club was open fields and orchards, with very few buildings between Fulham High Street and today’s Putney Bridge. The land, known as Hurlingham Field, was part of the manor of the Bishops of London, dating back to before the Norman Conquest in 1066. In 1797, the lease for Hurlingham was taken by John Ellis, the descendent of a family of wealthy sugar-planters, who employed architect George Byfield to transform the small country house into the neo-classical mansion we see today. First established as a pigeon-shooting club, Hurlingham attracted many high-profile members and visitors but it was the introduction of polo that saw the Club rise to become one of the capital’s most popular places to visit – enjoyed by patrons that included the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII. During the Victorian and Edwardian period, the Club consisted of Hurlingham House, where members could dine, a polo ground, a range of sports facilities, an ornamental lake and flower gardens. In 1905,

under the patronage of Edward VII, pigeon shooting was discontinued and the shooting area became a tea ground.

Polo at Hurlingham Having originated in Persia and made popular via the military in India, it was in 1869 that polo first came to England when the 10th Hussars challenged the 9th Lancers to a game on Hounslow Heath. Five years later the sport arrived at Hurlingham, the first game played on 6 June 1874 between the Royal Horse Guards and the Monmouthshire Polo Club. Official rules were drawn up by The Hurlingham Club committee (published in 1875) and from that time on, Hurlingham became synonymous with polo. Today, the controlling body for the sport remains the Hurlingham Polo Association. The success of polo inspired further events and provoked expansion of the Club’s facilities. At one time Hurlingham boasted two grand pavilions, two grounds and stabling for 50 horses and 200 polo ponies. In 1908, the Club presented the Challenge Cup to the winning polo team at the London Olympics. Hurlingham also played its part during both World Wars, housing soldiers and equipment and eventually turning its playing fields into allotments. The Club withstood 27 bombs, a landmine and a ‘doodlebug’ that fell in nearby Wandsworth. Despite bomb damage, including the demolition of a conservatory and main house’s crystal dome on the east, Hurlingham was able to expand during the first half of the 21st century, running much as it did before the wars. In 1946, the London County Council bought the estate, turning No.1 polo ground into a public sports ground and using No.2 polo ground for new council housing. For 70 years the sounds of polo players thundering across the lawns disappeared from Hurlingham. Then, in 2009, the sport made a grand return with the launch of MINT Polo in the Park, an event that has won the London Sport Attraction of the Year at The London Lifestyle Awards for the last two years running. n www.mintpolointhepark.com

age: 35 place of Birth: London Handicap: 8 indoor career Highlight: Winning the Eduardo Moore cup with my father What has made MINT Polo in the Park such a success? Its ability to bring polo to a wider audience as it encapsulates all the highoctane excitement about the sport. The event also provides something for all the family to enjoy. This year we have a Harrods Food Court for food lovers, a children’s club for our younger spectators, a luxury shopping village and even a tiki-themed Polonesia bar. There really is something for everyone. What’s more fun to play, traditional polo or arena polo? Both have their own unique qualities. Getting out for an early game on a crisp morning in the British countryside is such a fantastic way to spend one’s time. But the thrill of playing in front of a lively crowd really adds to the excitement. How does it make you feel to be playing at the birthplace of British polo? The Hurlingham Club is a name that goes hand-in-hand with polo and is a fantastic setting for MINT Polo in the Park. Playing there reminds me how lucky I am to be involved with such a wonderful sport. How does MINT Polo in the Park rank against other competitions? The sheer number of people who attend really makes a difference. Last year, we had just shy of 30,000 people throughout the weekend cheering in the grandstands, which is an incredible feeling, bearing in mind polo is usually played in small countryside clubs.

Where is your favourite place in the world to play polo and why? Argentina is great because their Latin passion shines through. But my home club, The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, is so close to my heart. What’s the best polo after-party you’ve been to? Last year’s Veuve Clicquot after party at The Hurlingham Club was certainly a winner in my mind. Jonny Borrell from Razorlight performed an amazing acoustic set and really got the party started.

Anyone who knows anything about motoring will appreciate the significance of the Toleman TG184-2 Formula One car which is up for auction at Silverstone this May. Driven by Ayrton Senna in his debut F1 season, the car is best known for its second place position in Monaco in 1984, marking a crucial moment in the racing driver’s legendary career before his untimely death. The Toleman has been in private ownership for the past 16 years and is a much sought-after collector’s piece. Although undoubtedly the auction’s star attraction, the event has plenty more to offer in the way of race cars, modern sports cars, motorcycles and automobile memorabilia.

The 2012 French Open will take place from 27 May to 10 June in Paris at the Stade Roland Garros, named after the famous French aviator. Andy Murray has been going from strength to strength, having reached the final of the Miami Masters and semi-finals of the Australian Open, where the balance of power swung to and fro throughout the match like a pendulum, causing him to declare: “I’m proud of the way I fought”. Now the four super powers of tennis, Nadal, Federer, Murray and Djokovic, will meet again to battle it out on the courts for the grand slam.

TURNING BACK

THE CLOCK

Motoring fans are well served by classic events within easy reach of the capital. Matthew Carter relives a Goodwood Revival and highlights others you mustn’t miss this summer

O

verhead, a pair of Spitfire fighters escort a Lancaster bomber to safety. On the ground, a Dad’s Army of Home Guard soldiers attempts to keep order as a group of mods and rockers run riot. Elsewhere, jazz bands blow, barbers cut and shoppers dip into Tesco looking to collect a few more Green Shield Stamps. Yes, the chronology is a little out but this is the Goodwood Revival and anything, provided it’s from the 1940s-60s, goes. It’s all part of what could justifiably claim to be the greatest show on earth and it’s just one of the season’s must-do events, whether you’re a petrol-head or not. The Revival is held on the site of the former RAF station of Westhampnett, originally an emergency landing airfield for WWII fighters down near Chichester on the Sussex coast. After the war, it was turned into the Goodwood Motor Circuit, one of the fastest race tracks in the UK and where top line motor racing took place until 1966, when rising speeds and safety concerns forced its owners to close it down rather than emasculate the circuit with chicanes. Today, racing is back for one weekend a year (14-16 September) when the entire place comes alive for a threeday nostalgia fest that celebrates three decades of all-action history. Vintage aircraft take to the skies and cars of the

type that raced there in period return to the track. But what makes the Revival particularly unique is the fact that everyone taking part dresses accordingly. Drivers – including many famous names – wear plain overalls devoid of gaudy sponsorship, mechanics wear white coats, officials wear armbands tied on with string and, best of all, the spectators join in. Gentlemen wear uniforms or jackets and ties. Cravats and trilbies are everywhere, while ladies wear 50s fashion with swing skirts, heels and gloves (and plenty of fur). Others embrace the 1960s, with mini skirts and thigh high boots. All around the circuit there are authentic period vehicles and themes. WWII Jeeps and 1950s trucks and vans service the site, while even the car parks are full of classic cars of the period – with the more modern stuff parked well away from the action. The attention to detail is extraordinary. Food outlets serve fish and chips in reprints of 1950s newspapers and even the corn stooks on the circuit infield are made from a specially-grown crop with extra-long stalks for hand cutting rather than combine harvesting. “The Revival is theatre,” says Lord March, Goodwood’s owner. “The circuit is literally dressed up like a huge film set, and that includes the competitors and spectators.

But equally, it’s quite easy to look the part in just smart classic clothing – it depends how far you want to go.” And we haven’t even mentioned the racing yet. On track action is of the highest calibre and regularly attracts top names including recent F1 stars, sport car champions and the cream of the historic car and bike racing crop. Feature races this year include the Shelby Cup, a 45-minute two-driver race for AC Cobras, and the TT Celebration race, a one-hour two-driver race with priceless cars such as the Ferrari 250GTO and GT SWB, Aston DB4GT and lightweight E-types trading places. Without a doubt the Revival meeting is the highlight of the classic motoring year but it’s a long way from being the only event on the calendar, nor even the only event at Goodwood. A trip to Goodwood House, the family home of Lord March, for the Festival of Speed (28 June – 1 July) will mean close contact with a vast array of racing machinery from the earliest times to the present day. Modern F1 machinery and their drivers – Sebastian Vettel is coming this year – rub shoulders with track and rally cars and stars, racing and road bikes and supercars and superstars, all of whom tackle the now famous Goodwood Hill climb with incredible enthusiasm and no apparent concern for the narrowness of the track and the proximity of stone walls, trees and other obstacles. This year’s theme is Young Guns – Born to Win while the featured marque is Lotus (assuming the company’s current problems allow it). Just a couple of weeks before the Festival, Brooklands – the world’s first purpose built race track – is holding the Double Twelve Motorsport Festival (16-17 June). Although the pre-war banked circuit, down near Weybridge in Surrey, is no longer complete, there’s enough track left for period cars to compete in various driving challenges, a concours d’élégance and speed trials. Organised by the Vintage Sports Car Club, more than 144 classic and vintage cars will be competing, while other attractions on the site include the Brooklands Museum and Mercedes-Benz World. The cut and thrust of classic racing can also be enjoyed at the Silverstone Classic weekend (20-22 July) with E-types and AC Cobras locking horns once again. There will be races for classic touring cars, historic sports and GT cars plus F1 Grand Prix racers of all shapes and sizes. In all, there will be some 1,100 cars entered for 22 races over the three-day event, along with special cavalcades

including a salute to the Ferrari F40, which celebrates its 25th birthday this year. Some 50 examples of this remarkable car have already been entered. Determined to deliver a weekend of all-round entertainment the organisers have included rock music evenings, with Mike and the Mechanics topping the bill on Friday night and Adam and the Ants taking over on Saturday night. Finally, if motorsport is not your absolute passion but you do enjoy old cars, why not try the close-to-home Enfield Pageant of Motoring (just off junction 25 of the M25) at the end of this month (25-27 May)? With more than 2,000 vintage and classic trucks, bikes and cars on display, plus 400 auto-jumble stands to help you find that illusive part for your own treasured classic, there’s something for everyone here. n For more information and ticket details, please visit: Enfield Pageant: 25-27 May www.whitewebbsmuseum.co.uk Brooklands Double Twelve Motorsport Festival: 16-17 June www.brooklandsmuseum.com Silverstone Classic: 20-22 July www.silverstoneclassic.com Goodwood Festival of Speed: 28 June - 1 July Goodwood Revival: 14-16 September www.goodwood.com/motorsport

Citroën’s Chinese Revolution With a top speed of 151mph, a four wheel drive option and a battery which takes just three and a half hours to charge, Matthew Carter has high hopes for the new hybrid

F

or those of a certain age, the phrase ‘number 9’ can only mean one thing: Revolution 9, a John Lennon track from The White Album, in which he simply repeats “number 9” over and over again. The experimental track, influenced by Yoko Ono, prefaced the beginning of the end for the Beatles. It’s not easy listening. Citroën, however, is hoping that this association won’t affect the popularity of its latest offering, a dramatic shooting brake concept that was given its public debut at the Bejing Motor Show at the end of April. Called Numéro 9, it marks the launch of the company’s stylish DS line in China, one of Citroën’s largest markets, later this year. As it happens, the number nine is considered lucky in China. A large car, Numéro 9 is also extremely low to the

56

ground and combines the lines of a coupé with the practicality of an estate. Its unconventional looks are matched by an unconventional drivetrain which features plug hybrid technology. It has a 225hp 1.6-litre petrol engine driving the front wheels and a 70hp electric motor driving the rear pair. So as well as virtually 300hp on tap, it also has four-wheel drive when needed. The 0-60mph dash is said to take less than 5.4 seconds and the top speed is 151mph, while the electric motor can be used on its own in cities and has a range of around 30 miles before it needs charging. Citroën claims the batteries need just 3.5 hours hooked up to a domestic socket to get it fully charged. Will Numéro 9 make it? If it does – unlike Mr Lennon – Citroën is sure to have a hit on its hands. n

GRAND EXPECTATIONS

W Make the most of Royal Ascot and hire a private balcony, the best way to watch the pageantry unfold this summer

hile out riding in 1711, it was HRH Queen Anne who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot, exclaiming it looked an ideal place for “horses to gallop at full stretch”.

Full afternoon tea with strawberries and cream is also served. n www.royalascothospitality.co.uk

news LeAtheR foReVeR Hermès will celebrate its 175th year with an exhibition in Burlington Gardens, 8-27 May. Founded by Thierry Hermès in Paris in 1837, it has flourished through six generations of enterprising artisans. Exploring the brand’s love of leather, the exhibition presents items from Hermès’ past, such as those commissioned by the Duke of Windsor for his Duchess, as well as some of its latest creations. Four unique bags celebrating the United Kingdom will be sold for charity.

moSt WAnteD: hAtS off Despite the Duchess of Cambridge’s penchant for the fascinator, Ascot has tightened its dress code this year, with ladies visiting the Royal Enclosure required to wear “a headpiece which has a base of four inches (10cm) or more in diameter”. Emily London has a beautiful collection of

elegant hats and headpieces, ideal for many of the smart sporting events this summer. With the likes of Sadie Frost already hooked, designer and creative director Emily Baxendale offers both a ready-to-wear and bespoke service.

Chloé’s Marcie Mini ticks the pastel trend with this blush leather shoulder bag. The perfect summer accessory, this baby-sized carrier makes an ideal evening accompaniment, especially when both hands are required for champagne and canapés. While it looks petite, it has plenty of space for your essentials and won’t have your shoulder complaining after hours of mingling.

The Victoria & Albert Museum is celebrating the opening of its newly renovated Fashion Galleries with an exhibition of beautiful evening dresses. Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 will present more than 60 designs, including eveningwear by Norman Hartnell, Victor Stiebel and Zandra Rhodes alongside dresses fresh from the catwalk shows of Alexander McQueen, Giles Deacon, Erdem and Jenny Packham. The exhibition starts on 19 May.

“Dresses and skirts should be of modest length defined as falling just above the knee or longer” stipulates the clarified Royal Ascot dress rules. This chic, sophisticated mid-blue embroidered number from Reiss will see you through the races, not to mention the polo, Wimbledon and Goodwood. Worn with nude courts and a cream bouclé jacket, this dress is a smart season staple.

Expanding the Fin’s experience above the ankle for the first time, the fashion firm, launched in 2008 by London girl Alexandra Finlay, has just announced its S/S12 capsule collection – a joint partnership with Paris’ Hartford clothing line and Australia’s Frank swim shorts brand. Available online and at Harvey Nichols and Peter Jones, the collection features Hartford’s iconic soft washed linen shirts (£100) and laid-back chinos (£130), along with Frank’s sleek, light-weight tailored shorts (£60). Summer Silk The brand has been praised for actively promoting improvements in wool production around the world, but it seems the fabric of choice for Ermenegildo Zegna this season is silk. The Italian fashion house has unveiled its S/S12 collection, a range of silk creations in an assortment of technologically advanced fabrics, finishes and textures developed exclusively for Zegna. Made to look as though it’s been “devoured by the sun”, the range consists of chalky whites, pale blues and green grey hues. Glossy and iridescent suits contrast wrinkled and smooth effects, obtained through combining tailored separates, striped knitwear shirts and tonal silk ties. Home, Sweet Home As Lifestyle Director at Jo Malone London, Debbie Wild knows the importance of making home feel like home. She tells Kari Rosenberg about her love for the English capital, the best places to be inspired and the art of throwing the perfect dinner party

interiors

P

assionate about scent, Debbie’s fragrance training has been perfected over the course of years of handson experience which she integrates into her ‘nose’ workshops. She still remembers the thrill of receiving her first ever Jo Malone ™ gift; a cologne wrapped in the beautiful signature packaging. If you could work anywhere where would it be? London is my favourite city in the world and I am constantly inspired by its diversity. The hectic buzz of the metropolis is perfectly balanced by its glorious parks. I love taking my children to Regent’s Park, particularly in October for the Frieze Art Fair which showcases new artists and provides inspiration. It’s very thought provoking for kids. Where in London inspires you? The Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour is a kaleidoscope of creative stimulation. I never miss the myriad wonders of the Chelsea Flower Show in late May because of the new design concepts and inspiring scents. Additionally, London’s markets are fabulous. I love browsing at the Dover Street Market, which houses an eclectic mix of fashion and fragrance. For a truly vibrant experience, I recommend Borough Market; it’s crammed full of stalls selling anything from cheeses and chocolates to delicious breads, spices and flowers. London’s interior and lifestyle stores are exemplary and, whether you browse or buy, the Conran Shop on Sloane Street, the General Trading Company in Sloane Square and Cologne & Cotton on Marylebone High Street yield multiple treasures. Where in the capital do you go to unwind? For glamour and fabulous Japanese food, Nobu Berkeley is divine, especially the Black Cod signature dish. Shoreditch House has both a fantastic restaurant and a great spa, the perfect combination. Daylesford Organic’s Café in Sloane Square is a not-so-naughty pleasure incorporating fresh, organic ingredients from local farms. For a decadent afternoon tea, I would head to the embodiment of British luxury: Claridge’s. It is elegant, classic and has delicious food. How do you balance work and family life? When I’m not travelling the world, I balance my days at Jo Malone London with time at home in Hertfordshire with my husband, son and daughter. You spend a lot of time jetting around the world to promote Jo Malone London. What are your travel essentials? I’m a frequent traveller and never leave home without my Brora cashmere blanket. It’s incredibly soft and warm, yet very light and, though indulgent, it has become a necessity. I also always travel with photographs of my children in a classic Smythson leather photo holder. When I’m abroad, I try and recreate the feel of home. With my photos and a Jo Malone London candle I can instantly transform a hotel room. Most people associate home scents with candles. Scatter Travel Candles in comforting scents around the bedroom

and bath add a wonderful touch. New Scented Sachets are a clever travelling companion; fold them into your clothes and linens to keep fabrics fresh. The compact and innovative packaging makes them the ideal accessory. What are your personal favourite Jo Malone London fragrances? I love the clean freshness of Amber & Lavender topped with the warm notes of Nutmeg & Ginger; the combination is perfect to wear every day and it’s special to me as the smell reminds me of home. In the evenings I spritz on Pomegranate Noir. I find the scent wonderfully bold and intriguing, yet elegant too. The summer months are best for garden and dinner parties. What are your top entertaining tips? A well-known British party planner once told me to spray linen napkins with the Jo Malone London Acqua di Limone Linen Spray just before guests arrive. The scent does not compete with the meal and the fresh, aromatic aroma brings to mind the moment of sipping a gin and tonic on a balmy summer’s eve. Scents bring personality to a home. Decorate your house with scent to match a mood, occasion or complement the season. Lime Basil & Mandarin is refreshing in the summer months, whereas Pomegranate Noir will warm up winter evenings. Alternatively the soft floral Red Roses is ideal for intimate, more feminine spaces such as the bedroom and bathroom. Pomegranate Noir Scent Diffusers will perk up your entertaining space. Pomegranate, raspberry and plum, spiked with pink pepper, will heighten the mood and play on the senses. A simple outdoor table dressed with starched linens and serviettes, tea lights and handpicked flowers are a must for alfresco dining in the summer. The aroma of peppery basil, white thyme, and zesty citrus in Lime Basil & Mandarin Scent Diffusers will bring a lively twist to your garden setting. Why do you think there has been such an increase in the home scent market? Entertaining at home is on the up. People are increasingly proud of their property, investing time and money into home styling and the small details. A smart scented Home Candle, Scent Diffuser or Room Spray is a simple way to create an atmosphere. There are infinite ways to use scent. Adorn your wardrobe with limited edition Drawer Liners and Scent Sachets. Use fragrance to welcome guests or simply to create an area of calm and relaxation for yourself. n Fresh for summer, the Home Collection is now available at Jo Malone London, 24 Royal Exchange or online at www.jomalone.co.uk

A STERLING TRADITION

S The London Silver Vaults open their doors this summer to celebrate Britain’s most distinguished modern silversmiths

ince the early 1950s, the tradition of British silvermaking has lain in the hands of skilled designer silversmiths. Behind its cumbersome bolted doors, the London Silver Vaults are home to the world’s largest retail collection of fine antique and modern silver; a veritable treasure trove of collectors’ items including everything from champagne swizzle sticks to a full-size armchair. From 28 May, a modern silver exhibition titled Post War Winners: 60 Years of British Silver will examine six decades of fine British technique. Among the most distinguished and influential

craftsmen of the late 20th century, works by Gerald Benney, who held four Royal Warrants simultaneously, Stuart Devlin, Christopher Lawrence and Robert Welch are to be fêted in the collection. Also included are pieces from luxury retailers Asprey and Garrard, as well as jewellery and commemorative gift items created with the 2012 Diamond Jubilee hallmark. Trade aficionados will observe inspirations from changing aesthetics in sculpture, abstract art, modernist architecture and design. n www.thesilvervaults.com

Endless

Summer Offering a veritable masterclass in far-flung, decadent, beach-side relaxation, Desroches is a genuine paradise, reports Sarah Gilbert

A

s our small plane circled the island below, we looked down on to a castaway’s spit of land; a verdant oasis fringed with astonishingly white sand, lapped by the cerulean blues of the Indian Ocean. We borrowed masks,

snorkels and fins and ordered a picnic lunch – a basket of baguettes, fresh salads, exotic fruit and a bottle of chilled white wine – to be delivered to the aptly named Aquarium, a coral-encrusted oasis teeming with fish. Our sub-aqua excursion was even more thrilling. Desroches has 14 world-class dive sites in its vicinity and some of the best cave and canyon diving in the Indian Ocean. Plunging through shafts of sunlight, we glimpsed giant groupers, ribbon-tailed stingrays and spiny lobster. One afternoon, we also tried our hand at fishing. Desroches is at the heart of one of the world’s best areas for deep-sea fishing, with some heavy hitters such as marlin, barracuda and sailfish, as well as the angler’s holy grail; bonefish. Angling novices, our crew set up the trawling lines, while we opened bottles of cold beer and sat back to wait. Soon a line went taut and, after an exhausting battle, a 15-kilogram iridescent yellowfin tuna was hauled in. After an obligatory photo he was returned to the sea – Desroches operates a strict catch-and-release policy, with the exception of supplies for the kitchen, of course. Some evenings we would gather with other guests for cocktails and relaxed chat at the rustic Castaway Bar, complete with driftwood tables and front-row views of the incredible sunset. We’d then feast alfresco on the catchof-the-day at the convivial restaurant under an enormous rubber tree. The menu is a delicious fusion of Creole, Malaysian, Indian and Mediterranean flavours, with

86

giant Madagascan prawns, lobster and octopus among our favourite ingredients. Sometimes, though, we preferred our own company and watched the sunset from a daybed designed for two on a deserted stretch of beach. It doesn’t get more romantic than dining, feet in the sand, under a starstudded sky, surrounded by a multitude of twinkling candles, with the ocean as background music. Our time at Desroches felt like an endless summer. When the biggest dilemmas of each day are whether to swim in the ocean or the pool, and whether to have a glass of wine or a cocktail, you’ll never feel further from the city, or more relaxed. n

The Summer

SportS ExplorEr

For those wanting to get away this summer, Richard Brown highlights some international sporting events worth planning a trip around

It’s approaching eight o’clock in the morning. the sun-lit streets of pamplona have been getting increasingly busy for the last two hours. thousands now line the town’s cobbled lanes, hands sweaty, voices animated. As the clock strikes eight, a rocket explodes: a cheer goes up; the bulls are released. time to run. Slowly at first; the bulls are still some distance behind you. But they’re getting closer; you can hear their thundering hooves. Screams start to fill the air. the most intrepid of daredevils will be aiming to feel the breath of the bulls on the back of their necks; chances are, the soles of your shoes will be pounding the street faster than they’ve ever pounded them before. Welcome to pamplona’s running of the Bulls. Each day for a week, six bulls, six steers and two herds are shepherded at breakneck speed 825 metres down crowd-filled streets from the top of the town to pamplona’s bull ring. A health and safety nightmare, you’d think. Well, to the Spanish mind, apparently not. Despite regular fatalities and hundreds being injured every year, the event attracts thrill-seeking adrenaline-junkies from all around the world. run with the bulls, survive to tell the tale and you’ll certainly be entitled to the office bragging rights. For the more timidly natured, there’s always the world’s largest tomato fight at la tomatina in Buñol later in the year.

The El Clásico FC Barcelona Vs. Real Madrid CF Ronaldo, Messi, Ronaldo, Messi... which footballing player really is the game’s greatest? It’s a dispute that rumbles on in the corners of pubs across the continent. Why not make up your own mind by watching both take to the field in what is one of sport’s greatest grudge matches? At least twice a year, Spain’s two most successful teams do battle in the El Clásico, the world’s most followed club football match, watched by hundreds of millions of people from Tokyo to Tanzania. So close is the pedigree of the two teams that when it comes to trophies, Barcelona lead the count by 75 to 74; so intense is the rivalry, that when ex-Barcelona player Luís Figo returned to the Nou Camp as a Real Madrid player in 2002, Barcelona fans threw a pig’s head at him. Fans choosing to watch the derby in Madrid can take advantage of Hotel Villa Magna’s new Real Madrid Football Package. Enjoy private car transfers to and from the stadium on match day and unrivalled VIP box seats at the legendary Barnabeau stadium before returning to the outlandishly sumptuous confines of the hotel’s Royal Suite which, amongst other things, boasts a Japanese garden and an 1,183 square foot terrace. Essential with any hotel room, we’re sure you’ll agree.

Singapore Grand Prix 21-23 September 2012 Five years ago, roaring around an urban metropolis in a Formula One car at the dead of night was an experience reserved for Playstation games. Then, in 2008, Gran Turismo came to life. Thrilling drivers, fans, sponsors and pundits in equal measure, Singapore’s Grand Prix promised all the streetrace excitement of Monaco under the glimmering lights of one the world’s most impressive night-time cities. The world’s most glamorous sport got even glitzier. Unsurprisingly, all 110,000 tickets made available for the 2008 race sold out immediately. Set against the spectacular city backdrop of the historic City Hall and the modern architectural gem the Esplanade (Theatres on the Bay), the Singapore Grand Prix has been enthralling F1 audiences ever since. As it’s an event that combines highoctane racing, road-side entertainment, pop concerts and after parties, it’s not hard to see why. The best transport-connected Grand Prix circuit out there, the Singapore Grand Prix track is less than a six minute walk from five subway stations and a stone’s throw away from an array of exclusive five star hotels. We recommend the tropical-garden-themed Shangri-La Hotel, located near

connoisseur

the renowned Orchard Road shopping district and The RitzCarlton, whose 608 newly-renovated guestrooms each have unobstructed views of Singapore’s mesmerising skyline.

Twenty20 Cricket World Cup, Sri Lanka 18 September - 7 October 2012 When the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) put their heads together in 2002 in an attempt to boost the sport’s ailing popularity, little did they know that they would conceive a version of cricket that would revolutionise the game. Contested between teams who each have a single innings of 20 overs, Twenty20 made cricket fast, dramatic and more spectator friendly than ever before. It didn’t take long for the game’s popularity to explode; a year after the sport’s inauguration, the 2004 Twenty20 Cup match between Middlesex and Surrey attracted a crowd of 26,500 people, the largest attendance for any county cricket game other than a one-day final since 1953. The game quickly went global. Three years later, South Africa hosted the first Twenty20 world cup. The bi-annual tournament had already become a favourite fixture in the calendars of cricket lovers across the world when in 2010 India launched the Indian Premier League. Contested by nine teams made up of international players, the league is now the second highest paying in sport, second only to the NBA. Kicking off in Sri Lanka on 18 September, the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 tournament will be the first World Twenty20 tournament held in Asia. For some fun in the sun, head to the paradise island and watch England attempt to retain the cup. Barmy Army!

USA Baseball: The MLB World Series 24 October 2012 Up there with the Super Bowl and the NBA Finals among America’s most prestigious sporting occasions, baseball’s MLB World Series is an event that captivates the nation. Dating back to 1903, and nick-named the Fall Classic because it is played in October, the championship has become a permanent fixture on America’s cultural landscape, the pinnacle match of a sport that attracts 73,000,000 attendees a season. The series is played between the American League and National League champions, with teams gaining the place in the final through a best-of-seven playoff, having already endured a 162-game season. The American League’s New York Yankees have proved the most successful team in the history of the sport, winning 27 of the 40 World Series they have played. n

What to do:... the Gondolas It may be cheesy and it may be obvious, but to come to Venice without taking a ride would be like visiting Paris and not eating macaroons. A standard Gondola trip is only 40 minutes, leaving lots of time to visit the many museums and galleries which pepper the water’s edge. The Palazzo Ducale, also called the Doges’ Palace, hosts a thorough assortment of smaller museums, a courtyard, and a trove of extravagant embellishments, including frescoed walls, gilded ceilings and complex carved statues and murals.

Don’’t miss:... Venice Carnival Commencing around two weeks before Ash Wednesday and ending on Shrove Tuesday, the annual Venice carnival is world famous. Visitors can enjoy the mask-clad masquerades as people parade around the city in full elaborate dress, enjoying the open-air live music in St Mark’s Square. If you’re reluctant to don the costumes of courtesans and harlequins, visitors can opt to have their faces painted or purchase a flamboyant hat. Of course, no trip to Carnival would be complete without a taste of the delicious frittelle, a type of doughnut only made over the festive period. n

Return of

THE RIB ROOm Following an extensive revamp, the Rib Room Bar & Restaurant recently rejoined London’s culinary scene. Richard Brown visits to see if the new edition is as good as the old

O

wing to the fact that it was closed for refurbishment at the time of print, the Rib Room’s entry in the 21st edition of Harden’s London Restaurants Guide is rather unenlightening. What it does tell us, though, is that “long ago, it was the capital’s only steakhouse of any note.” Fast forward 50 years, from when the restaurant first opened, to a London in the midst of a steak revolution and the Knightsbridge establishment is faced with stiffer competition. How, then, does the newly revamped Rib Room fare amongst its meat-heavy rivals? Well, interior-wise, if Gaucho exists as a monochrome temple to the ultramodern, the Rib Room is a shrine dedicated to Art Deco; a symmetrical space governed by geometrical shapes where dark woods and green leathers sit on top of a (dubious) carpet of sea green and dark emerald diamonds. It’s a décor that lends the restaurant a subdued and conservative atmosphere, one that is suited to an older, more experienced diner and to people more appreciative of good food than lively nightlife. That said, located at the base of the awardwinning five star Jumeirah Carlton Tower, the restaurant caters for an eclectic mix; on the night we visited, a young European family dined, who, judging by their casual dress, were staying at the hotel, amongst several tables of what appeared to be the local hedge fund set and a large contingent of suited Chinese diners. At odds with the 1950s-inspired feel of the restaurant is the 21st century way you go about ordering wine. Done so via an iPad, visitors are able to filter their choice first by colour and then by everything from year, price, producer, grape, region and style. Unsure if you’ve made the right decision, then select the ‘about’ button and you can read the back story of your shortlisted choice. For us, that was California’s Parducci Petit Sirah (£39); a refreshing wine suited to most dishes. For anyone planning on saving their appetite for a meat-centric main, the Rib Room’s Chestnut mushroom and roasted celeriac soup (£9.50) is a light and tasty option with which to start; poured at your table into a bowl of mushrooms, it’s also a dish that typifies the intricate nature of how food in the restaurant is served. For meat-lovers looking to indulge from the start, the braised lamb neck, lamb marrow bone and garlic purée (£12)

94

is served melt-in-your-mouth tender and, for me, proved the star of the evening. For mains, my companion enjoyed the justas-tender chargrilled Cornish lamb cutlets (£29), which, served with slow cooked tomatoes, Portobello mushrooms and watercress, was an enjoyable mix of fresh and punchy flavours, appropriate tastes as spring turns to summer. For an example of what the Rib Room’s chefs are capable of, choose the beef rib four ways (£29). Presenting a braised short rib, slow roasted flank, chargrilled tournedos and a mini marrow bone burger, all so delicious you’ll struggle to decide which one to leave until last, it’s a dish whose attention to detail more than justifies its price. If you enjoy a little pomp with your dessert, the apple crumble soufflé (£8.50) won’t disappoint. Brought to your table intact, a waiter will then break the top of the pudding in front of you before pouring inside an apple and custard sauce. The only criticism was that it was a little too sweet. When it comes to dining in the capital, the likes of Goodman, Gaucho and Hawksmoor have garnered a reputation for serving some of the best steaks this side of Buenos Aires. Not necessarily as extravagant but certainly more intimate, the Rib Room is a restaurant that can certainly hold its own among its competitors. n The Rib Room, Jumeirah Carlton Tower Cadogan Place, www.jumeirah.com

saving sight worldwide

Image © ORBIS International

He didn’t have to fly to see the world. Thanh had never seen his mother’s face, never mind the outside world. But that all changed the day he boarded the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital. Staffed by volunteer ophthalmologists and eye surgeons, our specially converted aircraft flies to developing countries all over the world to cure cases of treatable blindness. Just like Thanh’s. We don’t think children like Thanh should have to spend the rest of their lives in darkness. That’s why we make sure they get first-class treatment, without ever having to leave the ground. 8 in 10 cases of blindness worldwide are treatable or preventable. Will you support ORBIS today, and help us treat more of them?

Help keep the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital in the air. Call: 020 7608 7260 Visit: www.orbis.org.uk Email: icare@orbis.org.uk
