Elizabeth Hurley: A Close-Up As brands become lifestyles and celebrities become brands, Elizabeth Hurley has mastered enigmatic and aspirational appeal. GABRIELLE LANE talks beauty and business with the model and actress

D

uring the course of writing up an interview with Elizabeth Hurley, two of my team ask me if her name is followed by an acronym; has she been given some sort of honours for contribution to British public life? Scoff if you wish, but I did Google it. From model and actress to charity ambassador, Hurley’s public image has changed many times over the years, but one thing that has remained consistent is her quintessentially British persona. Hurley has occupied the curious ground between recognisable and elusive for nearly three decades: whether or not you’re aware of her latest projects, you’ll be aware of her style signatures: pristine white jeans, a carefully-coiffed blow-dry and a cut-glass accent, to name but three. Indeed, I know quite a few people who would like to be a bit more ‘Hurley’ – and the appeal transcends generations. Admitting she “can’t imagine not living in London”, she knows her stereotypes, in a way that’s as likeable as it is self-assured. She tells me later in our conversation that she “can’t resist a quick fix of The White Company” and “would cry if I couldn’t sink into a bath with Jo Malone

bath oil at the end of the day.” Holidays are spent reading and sleeping at Frégate Island in the Seychelles, Mustique or the Maldives and her luxuries are Hermès cashmere blankets. Hurley is also not about to protest that her look has overshadowed her acting roles. “No – it’s helped,” she admits. “But I only look glamorous on the red carpet; in real-life when I’m off-duty and in the country, you wouldn’t recognise me in a police line-up. Part of my living has been based on representing luxury brands, so it’s important I fly the flag in public. But I wear jeans and a ponytail for the other 95 per cent of the time.” Arguably, it was Hurley’s public image that helped land her a part in The Royals, a fictional drama based on a rather colourful incarnation of the British aristocracy that will return for its second series on E! this year. “I play the Queen of England – Queen Helena – who is intelligent, brave, glamorous, manipulative and dangerous,” Hurley explains. “I wanted my queen to be sleek and stylish and look very expensive; I wear what I imagine the late Princess Diana would have worn if she were still with us today. Season two is brimming over with scandal and intrigue and, of course, my character is right in the thick of it.”

She has, by her own admission, plugged away at forging an acting career. “I’m in an industry that specialises in rejection, especially at the beginning. For every job I got, I was turned down for dozens more. My mother used to drum into me the old saying, ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.’ It must have sunk in as I rarely give up.” Describing her most recent project as a “baptism of fire”, she says her work leaves little time for anything else. “Apart from a series of [US TV show] Gossip Girl I had only ever done movies. It’s nigh on impossible to have any kind of social life when you’re filming as the days are brutally long and there are a lot of lines to learn.” Off set, there are personal projects on the go. One long-standing professional relationship is with Estée Lauder; she has been modelling for the beauty brand for 21 years and is the global ambassador for its Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, which has seen funds raised used to support research at The Royal Marsden Hospital and The Institute of Cancer Research. “I’ve loved every minute of it. To know that through my work as the campaign’s global ambassador I can help such important research be achieved, is something that I am so proud of and has had a profound impact on me,” she explains. Keen to align herself with causes she’s passionate about, on the commercial side she keeps careful control of her own image. “It’s not a license, I own it,” she declares, when we speak of Elizabeth Hurley Beach, one of her business endeavours that has spawned a colourful collection of swimwear each season. “I’m still completely hands on in every aspect of my business but I have a great team that I can rely on. I love what I do.” I started designing beachwear as most women are paranoid about it. I try to make swimwear which fits well, and great cover ups, kaftans and sarongs,” she adds. Of course, it is Hurley herself who makes a glossy appearance in the campaign images for the range; I ask how healthy her lifestyle is. “I’m pretty active and have a lot of nervous energy. I rarely sit still for long, although I don’t do much regulated exercise. I

take my four insane dogs on long walks in the country and try to stretch a bit every day. And, I enjoy Pilates classes.” What of that famous Hurley dietary resolve? “I rarely think I’m on a diet, but sometimes when I see what some people eat I realise that to them, I’m on a permanent one. By that I mean that I very rarely eat processed foods and I don’t drink much alcohol. I always attempt to eat lots of vegetables and I only have pasta as a treat. Of course, occasionally my jeans feel like they’re straining at the seams. Then I concentrate on not picking between meals.”

I rarely sit still for long” Her own beauty icons are Elizabeth Taylor – “she had the most heartbreakingly beautiful face,” – and Isabelle Adjani (“could have launched ships”) and true to form, there are Estée Lauder products in her bathroom cabinet. “I’ve used Advanced Night Repair for 21 years and it is without doubt the best serum on the market. Everything working together in harmony contributes to you feeling your best.” With a young son who “luckily adores being on film sets”, the next series of The Royals on the way, cruise 16/17 and summer 2017 swimwear ranges to oversee, life is hectic, but good. But Hurley’s last anecdote is self-deprecating in a British fashion, of course. “It’s true that I have many balls in the air but so does almost every mum I meet. o celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Reverso wristwatch, Jaeger-LeCoultre has given Christian Louboutin free reign to apply his own inventiveness to the iconic timepiece. The original Reverso was designed by Jacques-David LeCoultre in 1931 at the request of British army officers in India. They wanted a watch that could stand the trials of a polo match. LeCoultre’s answer was a flip dial watch whose face could be concealed against the wrist

Work like a

cHARM

Fawaz Gruosi has become a superstar on the international jewellery scene and at 63, he shows no signs of slowing down. The Geneva-based founder of De Grisogono discusses women, diamonds and the future with Olivia Sharpe

C

harm is an impossible thing to define, but very easy to spot. I can therefore confirm that after meeting Fawaz Gruosi, founder of De Grisogono, he has it in diamonds. And judging from the steady stream of female celebrities pictured with him over the years, I am not the first woman to think so. This year, De Grisogono opened its new London flagship and while the design project was undertaken by the David Collins studio, Gruosi played a big hand in terms of the overall look and feel. The sumptuous interior, from the emerald green and ruby red upholstery to the amethyst floors, complements the vivid gemstones on display. The space is divided into three separate areas – the Corte, Stanza del Tempo and Grand Sala – based on the idea of a traditional Italian house to tie in with the founder’s Florentine heritage. At 63, Fawaz Gruosi hasn’t let standards slip, impeccably dressed in a custom-made suit courtesy of Milanese tailor A. Caraceni and a bespoke Turnbull & Asser shirt. As he talks airily, lightly waving a cigarette around and occasionally pausing to sip his coffee, I can see how the sophisticated jeweller, with his old school Italian glamour, has won over so many female fans over the years. The quick turnaround of the store (taking just 12 months in total) shows how the jeweller has by no means settled for the slow lane in life. Gruosi founded his company in Geneva in 1993 and it currently boasts 14 stores around the world, but he insists that he wants to cap the number at 30. “My principle from the beginning was for ladies at cocktail parties not to be wearing the same jewellery pieces,” he explains. “This is what has been happening in fashion for a long time, but it has

almost never happened with us and I want to keep it that way. This is why I’m against opening too many shops. It will mean losing the charm of the company.” The jeweller’s playboy lifestyle has been welldocumented over the years (his annual Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc parties in Cannes have become the stuff of legend), but make no mistake, he has never lost his shrewd business acumen. Having started De Grisogono on a shoestring, unable to afford “to open a chocolate shop never mind a jewellery company”, this made him more resolute than ever to steer his own path. “If you look in every major city – New York, London, Paris, Milan, Dubai – you see so much jewellery. I realised that the market needed something new, something different.” While financially hard up when starting his business, Fawaz had a wealth of experience in the industry (albeit no formal training), starting as young as 18 working for a jeweller before being taken on by two heavyweight brands: Harry Winston followed by Bulgari. As Winston’s representative in Dubai in the late ‘70s, Fawaz was given a taste of true luxury, looking after clients when the oil boom in Saudi Arabia had resulted in “money falling from the sky”. Like something out of Wall Street, he was taken out for lavish lunches and dinners and barely worked three hour days, but he confides how he soon got tired of the high life. “Life was getting too easy and I was scared, scared because I realised I was starting to develop the same mentality as them. There is nothing wrong with that if you have the money, but I didn’t. If I had stayed another three years, I don’t think I ever would have left.” Following this, he went on to work for Bulgari for eight years under the mentorship of then CEO Gianni Bulgari. A huge contrast to Dubai, after three months of being confined to Gianni’s office living off an apple and a yoghurt every day and

“nearly dying from the cigarette smoke from six in the morning until midnight” (when he no doubt picked up his habit), Gianni gave the then 33-year-old Gruosi the post of looking after VIPs worldwide. “It was probably the best time of my life”, he reminisces. “Bulgari was considered God at the time and pieces were selling like hot cakes.” However, according to the jeweller, a family disagreement resulted in the CEO walking out in 1985 and Gruosi following him. Both experiences taught Gruosi some invaluable lessons, the most important of which was that he had to offer something different from a market that had become tired and derivative. “There were a lot of rich people who bought a lot of jewellery, but they stopped buying because it had

all become the same.” Therefore, after splitting from his two partners, he took his first (of several) major business risks when he started buying black diamonds, which at the time had no market value. After receiving a lot of criticism, he nearly decided to pack it in altogether, but then he received his big break in 1995 when two other big name jewellers starting using the stones too. Today, natural black diamonds are valued very highly, proving that his decision paid off. From then on, it seemed that everything the jeweller touched turned to gold as he next invested in milky diamonds. Up until that point, they had been widely disregarded as “defective stones”, but Gruosi rebranded them ‘icy diamonds’ and they were an overnight success. Along with mixing unusual stones and materials, the jeweller was breaking new ground when it came to design, experimenting with off-the-wall creations that were praised for their daring, playfulness and ingenuity. “I was coming out with a lot of craziness, but that craziness was quickly becoming something that was considered innovative.” A true artist, Gruosi has never sacrificed design in favour of making a profit and he therefore puts shape first, stones second. “You have to be completely crazy to cut a 15-carat ruby because it is extremely unusual and rare to find, and you lose a lot of the weight by cutting it.” Gruosi’s motto is: “It is in the freedom of details that you find pure luxury.” In 2000, De Grisogono launched its first timepiece collection. A relative stripling in comparison to other historic Swiss watchmakers, I ask Gruosi what distinguishes his contemporary designs apart. “It’s very simple.

A lot of jewellers sell classic watches that are exactly the same style as their grandfathers’. For instance, I don’t do jewellery sets because the client ends up looking like a Christmas tree. It’s like clothes. You mix colours, styles, but you have to have a bit of taste to put them together properly.”

“ I was coming out with a lot of craziness, but that craziness was quickly becoming something that was considered innovative” While acknowledging at the time that he knew nothing about the mechanics of watchmaking, what he has always known is design. Therefore, tired of seeing the same old traditional styles, Gruosi instead wanted to create more simple, pared-back pieces that emphasised function. Over the years, De Grisogono has brought the watch industry forward with pioneering innovations, such as the Meccanico dG: the first mechanical watch to power a digital-style display. Gruosi teases that the one thing his female

customers all share in common is jealousy. “When a lady comes into our shop, there is typically another woman with her saying, ‘no it doesn’t suit you’, or ‘no it’s too expensive.’ So I hate it when a few ladies come in because 90 per cent of the time we lose a sale.” However, it is clear that it is his love of women that has enabled him to tap into what kind of jewellery they want to wear. And he even goes so far to admit that one of his longest-standing clients, Sharon Stone, shares many similarities with him. “She is the one I get along with most because she’s a bit crazy like me. She’s always fun, but very difficult at the same time,” he finishes, smiling. Today, De Grisogono is a truly global force and although its founder notes that the rest of the industry is afraid of how the current political unrest will affect sales in the future, for the jeweller it is business as usual. “I’m going on like everything is perfect.” And considering Gruosi’s life experience, you can see why. 15a New Bond Street, W1S, degrisogono.com

lexa Chung is a marketing tool. A fabulous one. She of long-limbs, rumoured rock God romances and sultry, dishevelled hair that we can’t replicate with tongs, mousse or scissors to date, is regularly declared a ‘style icon’. Why? What she does well is British fashion, which used to mean sharp collars and tailoring, and now has ascended (or descended, depending on your take on it) into the art of dressingdown to dress-up. Think tea-dresses with Chelsea boots, supersoft washed-out fabrics and, in the case of a new 31-piece collection for M&S, pleated midiskirts, polkadot prints and ruffled shirts plucked from its archive of more than 70,000 garments and updated for 2016. Chung is M&S’s latest advisor, having turned her hand to a relaunch of vintage styles in modern colours and fabrics, that will be available under the label Archive by Alexa Chung, this month. Some of her favourite designs were showcased at an event at London Fashion Week at which M&S style director, Belinda Earl, admitted: “we’re trying to talk to all of our customers with this collection, the customers that shop with us today and new customers as well.” She described the finished products as “full of lots of positive nostalgic memories.” Chung has served as the British Fashion Council’s Young Style ambassador since 2012 and has twice been given awards for her fashion sense by the same body. As Manolo Blahnik continues to put his best magenta slippered foot forward after 44 years in business, he tells Lauren Romano why he won’t be retiring anytime soon

anolo Blahnik knows how to make an entrance. We meet at a brand event, where he emerges dressed in a double-breasted suit, the Pantone shade of which might best be described as Parma Violet purple, accessorised with round tortoiseshell glasses, polka dot bow tie, light lilac socks and loafers in shocking pink. He flicks a cashmere scarf over his shoulder with a toss of the head (Mr Blahnik has been under the weather, his PR team tells me) and begins to embrace those assembled. Rather than a roll-call of young, leggy models recruited for the occasion, the Blahnik entourage includes Vogue’s Suzy Menkes, a radiant Yasmin Le Bon in neon yellow trimmed stilettos and the eminent classicist Mary Beard.

“In spite of his flamboyant attire, Blahnik is not the septuagenarian showman you might expect” The designer and Ms Beard (Mr Blahnik has a habit of referring to people by their titles) have spent many a happy hour together collating all the Greek words for shoe (there are more than 82 apparently). Beard even contributed to Manolo Blahnik: Fleeting Gestures and Obsessions, an illustrated tome documenting his life’s work – so far – that was released last summer. I say so far. At the age of 73, he’s in a jovial mood as he saunters past. But, in spite of his flamboyant attire, Blahnik is not the septuagenarian showman you might expect. His eccentricity is lightly worn, and while far from being taciturn – on the contrary he is delightfully blunt and meanders off topic regularly – he is also humble, even a little bashful at all the attention. Despite being in the shoe business for more than four decades, Blahnik still does things quietly, and deliberately, the way he always has. He visits the factories in Italy regularly to make the prototypes – “it’s probably my favourite time of the year” – and always keeps a notebook at arm’s reach to sketch his

bright freehand drawings at a moment’s notice. Blahnik’s obsession with shoes (his Bath townhouse is reportedly home to 30,000 pairs, since he keeps every single one of his designs) began during childhood. He grew up in Santa Cruz de la Palma in the Canary Islands where his mother’s family owned a banana plantation. “I remember being obsessed with my nanny’s espadrilles when I was a small child. I used to play with my dogs and little lizards that we had in the garden and I’d make shoes for them out of candy wrappers,” he chuckles. He reminisces that his bedtime stories consisted of Enid Blyton and Charles Dickens, and his Czech father was a Winston Churchill-loving Anglophile, so it was only a matter of time before he ended up in the British capital. Once here, a chance encounter with fashion editor Diana Vreeland persuaded him to focus on footwear instead of costume and set design, which he had studied at the École du Louvre in Paris. “I will always be grateful for Mrs Vreeland’s advice and support,” he adds, humbly. “She has done great things for this industry and changed the way fashion was perceived. She was a visionary.” Blahnik is dismissive of trends – surprising given that the industry holds him in such esteem. “I like to have the freedom to do what really inspires me.

That is the beauty of my job.” His inspiration is more likely to come from a book, his extensive film archive, or women such as (Karl Lagerfeld’s muse) Amanda Harlech and actresses Uma Thurman and Ángela Molina. “They all have something unique. They are elegant and they carry themselves in an exceptional way.” As talk turns to the past, it’s hard to ignore the brand’s most obvious moment in the spotlight. ‘Manolos’ were cemented in the public consciousness by a certain Carrie Bradshaw, who was rarely seen out of Blahnik’s stilettos in Sex and the City – something he flits away with a smile and an “of course, I’m very grateful” response. His longevity in the industry, he believes, is

down to his universal appeal. “I am very lucky because I can still say the Manolo Blahnik woman is every woman. We have new customers that save up to buy their first pair for their wedding, or young girls that have seen their mothers wearing the shoes. And of course we still have the beautiful women who have been buying from us every season for 40 years. I like to think, no matter their age, they will find something they like.” The seventies will always be rose-tinted for Blahnik. His big break came in 1972 when fashion designer Ossie Clark asked him to design the footwear for his catwalk. He made the shoes with rubber heels without using steel to reinforce them, which meant they were precarious to walk in. Thankfully the fashion editors took the teetering models to be a deliberate move and he got away with it – just – and soon the likes of Jean Muir, Zandra Rhodes and John Galliano were banging on his door. Near twisted ankles aren’t part of the equation now. “Perfect balance, perfect proportion” is essential for Blahnik. Such is his fastidiousness that I can well imagine him trying on the designs in the factory. He insists that it’s actually the comfort factor that sets his heels apart from towering stilettos nobody can walk in, or, heaven forbid, “detestable platforms.” (These are only OK if you’re wearing a long dress so you can’t see them.) “Feeling comfortable” is his personal mission too. You won’t catch

Blahnik eyeing up the crab doughnuts at fashionable London eateries. Afternoon tea and light lunches are on his agenda over showy suppers with those that have lauded his career. But – quiet night in? He rarely gets more than five hours of sleep a night. “I never relax!” he exclaims. “I’m always working, even on the weekend. I can’t switch off. I am inspired by so many different things or situations that I will need to stop what I’m doing and sketch my ideas. Without hard work you see no results. You must believe in what you do, put all your passion into it. If you don’t believe in it, no-one else will. “Who knows what the year ahead will bring. I don’t even know myself. I am always surprised how many things happen in one year without even planning it,” he concludes, matter-of-factly. Retirement, for now at least, is clearly a dirty word, so I don’t dare broach the subject. Mr Blahnik is still the life and sole (sorry) of his empire and no doubt he’ll be striding ahead, one shocking pink loafer in front of the other, for some time to come. manoloblahnik.com

What inspired you to make bespoke glasses? When I started designing bespoke glasses, I didn’t even realise I was doing it. I was practising on family and friends and I was given shapes and sizes by the industry. I found it incredibly frustrating because no one style worked on everyone. I realised I was never happy unless I designed the glasses specifically for somebody.

What sets the Tom Davies eyewear apart from other eyewear brands? What we do doesn’t exist in any other eyewear shop or optician. Every design we have here is made bespoke to our clients and everyone gets a red carpet experience. We take photographs, take measurements of brow line, hair line, nose, ears and more. When it comes to the frame, we take into account colouring, personality and occupation. I partnered up with Zeiss to be able to offer bespoke lense prescriptions. I use their equipment in my clinics to provide the best eye tests available. Now we get hospitals referring patients to us because our machines are 100 per cent accurate and can give the correct prescription straight away. Another interesting aspect is that I don’t keep stock in stores. If you order glasses, they are made just for you in a factory

nxiety exists on a spectrum. For example, being late for Pilates last week made me the not-so-proud owner of the most middle-class ‘anxiety’ issue ever. But because ‘stress’ and ‘anxiety’ are such overused terms, the seriousness of the mental health conditions are often overlooked. “Anxiety is used to describe a variety of disorders where feelings of anxiousness and a loss of control are so severe or regular they interfere with everyday life,” says Dr. Pablo Vandenabeele, clinical director of mental health at Bupa UK. “Psychological symptoms include tiredness, restlessness, irritability and detachment from yourself or your surroundings. Physical symptoms include stomach cramps, trembling or shaking, numbness and dizziness.” In 2013, there were 8.2 million cases of anxiety in the UK, according to the Mental Health Foundation. More than one in ten people are likely to have a ‘disabling anxiety disorder’ at some stage in their life, say Anxiety UK, and its prevalence is increasing: in 2007, 15 per cent of England’s population were experiencing an anxiety-related common mental health disorder, compared to 13.3 per cent in 1993. Research suggests root causes include personal insecurities, childhood issues, genetic tendencies and chemical imbalances in the brain. In its more mild forms, our constant availability via technology, has also been cited as creating social pressure and an inability to switch off from work. Another cause is the fast-paced nature of London life, compounded by overcrowding and pollution. “The ‘work hard, play hard’ culture in the City presented some specific health issues around mental health,” says consultant Stewart Kennedy, referring to a City of London survey in 2015, in which 44 per cent of workers said there was a need for help with stress, anxiety and depression. “Stress is visible on the face,” says Canary Wharf’s Rejuvenation Clinic & Medispa founder Dr Russo.“When you’re stressed, the adrenal glands produce cortisol, which can trigger excess sebum production, causing acne.” As for the classic stress manifestation – frown lines – Russo recommends either his night serum containing retinol and antioxidants or injections of Botox. Specialist treatments exist to help with anxiety; offering respite or self-help cognitive strategies. Others centre around relaxation methods: one of the less familiar solutions is Pulsing.

Pulsing at Re:SPA No, we’d never heard of it either: that’s what was so intriguing. Although pulsing has been around since the late 1970s, it’s not widely spoken about: the word brings to mind electrodes and lights, which couldn’t be further from the reality. Sent to sample one antidote to daily stress, I lie on a massage table in a darkened room, with soothing music in the background. So far, so normal. But the treatment, informed by the Alexander Technique, is like nothing I have ever experienced. My arms are gently stretched, my elbows rotated, legs pummelled and stomach massaged. Pressure is applied as my neck is pulled, gently, from left to right and repeatedly back again. There’s a lot of rocking and cradling as my whole body is pulled or turned from side to side, creating forced movement and supposedly mimicking the safe space of the womb. Mentally, I completely switch off, and I can physically feel stress and tension leaving parts of my body, particularly in my shoulders and neck. It’s soothing and nurturing and, says my therapist Brigitte, it’s the ultimate form of relaxation; a situation where you don’t make any actions or decisions for yourself. You simply ‘be’.

“I’m unfamiliar with the rarity of giving my bodily movements over to another person entirely” It takes me a while to relax my limbs. My inclination is to pre-empt Brigitte and move parts of my body myself, perhaps because I’m tense, or just unfamiliar with the sensation of giving control of my body over to another person entirely. The treatment takes 50 minutes, but when it ends, I feel dazed, unaware of how long has passed or what I’ve been thinking about. My limbs feel elongated and my perma-clenched muscles, used to hunching over a desk, feel stretched out. Having focused on my breathing throughout the treatment, I feel relaxed to the point of drowsy. It may not work for extreme anxiety sufferers, but those with constant low-level stress should try pulsing as temporary respite. With its adjoining cocktail bar, show-stopping platters and glamorous regulars, Roka is concealing a lively atmosphere and fine food behind those lift doors

A

word of warning: restaurant visits to Roka have the power to land you in a casino with the guests from a neighbouring table, at 3am. And while the outcome of dinner on a recent Friday night could say something about the gregarious crowd that the restaurant attracts, it is first and foremost a reflection on the food and the relaxed atmosphere, which means no-one wants to go home. From the same stable as Michelinstarred Zuma, Roka has built its name on fashionable, immaculately-presented Japanese sharing plates – from ice boats layered with pastel-pink sashimi to fillets of sirloin steak with a wasabi

from the robata grill which gives flavour to seafood and meat slowcooked over charcoal. New to Roka? First things first, don’t overlook the tempura. An anaemic-looking side elsewhere, here the rockshrimp variety is a golden art form; its batter is both crunchy and fluffy, and the fish succulent. It’s comforting and moreish, in contrast to the zesty yellowtail sashimi with yuzu truffle dressing, mizuna and pickled vegetable, which is delicate and refreshing (the latter is the dish the manager chooses to send out to impress VIPs, and it’s a must-order).

“Roka has built its name of fashionable, immaculately-presented Japanese sharing plates” ponzu sauce. There’s even a Wagyu beef gunkan with Oscietra caviar. Admittedly dining here is decadent and tables contested during bonus season, but it’s not a superficial experience. Flavours and textures are layered carefully and for the ultimate feast it’s best to try different types of dishes, including those

The Litmus test of Japanese fine dining in London seems to be black cod with miso. Order it here and the marinade is made with more yuzu (citrus fruit) and hajikami (ginger pickled in vinegar) and the overall taste is a familiar, slightly sticky sweetness that can characterise Asian cooking.

It’s a favourite, although the Canary Wharf crowd err towards the lamb cutlets with Korean spices: the meat falls off the bone and there’s a lingering smokiness from the grill. Us? We would have been content with the spicy tuna maki, slivers of octopus and thick-cut salmon paired with increasingly adventurous marinades – the fish is so fresh and light that you get full in a gradual, glorious way. Although definitely try a steak too, medium-rare for tenderness and perfectly seasoned. Rest assured that when you think you’ve had enough, the dessert platter will arrive with yet more colours and flavours. It is just as artistic as the mains and the team are deservedly proud of the crème brûlée with cherry blossom ice cream and sesame biscuit. Once you’ve been inaugarated into the polished breed of Roka diners? Make the most of the adjoining cocktail bar and order a potent espresso martini. n hearing the name of proprietory chef ‘Raymond Blanc’, expectations of the cooking school at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons (Le Manoir) in Oxfordshire, are understandably high – and places are in demand. The canapés at its two-Michelin starred restaurant set the standard: food is delicious, rich and meticulously presented. A 14-variety bread basket, baked fresh twice daily, is inspiration

enough for the hotel’s specific bread-making class, while its foie gras melts on the tongue and the Wagyu beef is almost buttery. Yet the real sensory explosion is dessert: a pistachio soufflé with a scoop of frozen cocoa sorbet at its centre. It’s a technical feat and enough to pique interest in more than 20 on-site cooking classes. Le Manoir’s Let’s Cook class focuses on techniques for at-home application and over the course of three hours a chef imparts the art of soufflé (easier than you think), and knowledge of which fats to cook with (stick to the same one throughout) as well as unexpectedly versatile seasonings such as lemon juice. At the end of the session, students can enjoy the attempted dishes – ours included spinach and wasabi purée, orange soufflé and chicken with morels – a highlight surpassed only by the chance of a meeting with Monsieur Blanc the next day. An after-dinner stroll reveals a vegetable garden (planted with more than 90 varieties), herb garden (70 types) and a rather charming apple orchard. ucknam Park’s cookery school offers a range of half- and full-day courses covering fish knife skills to tapas, but undertaking Michelin Star Cooking at Home, is an excuse to stay over. The tree-lined milelong drive makes for a memorable arrival and the historic hotel stands proudly in 400 acres, perfect for horse riding – thanks to an on-site equestrian centre – and a Michelin-star meal at The Park restaurant. Ben Taylor, the cookery school’s head chef, recently won The National Chef of Wales award and with as much patience as he has talent, he deserves most of the credit for the rhubarb soufflés that rise on his watch. The focus of the class is on mastering flavour and texture combinations, and learning useful techniques like how to make pasta from scratch. The hand-made quail Scotch eggs – as served on our butternut squash velouté starter – would be great canapés. With everything always to hand when you need it and groups kept to ten or less, the modern kitchen is easy to work in. On our visit, the dining table was already set with wine glasses for when we sampled our dishes, which gave a relaxing and sociable aspect to the day. After a refreshing dip in the pool, I retired to my suite complete with all-marble bathroom and rain-style shower, and took advantage of the speedy room service to have a log fire lit and enjoy a glass of wine – ample reward for a full day’s work I’d say. rom sangria to artisan cheeses, Perelada wines to Madrileño beers, Ibérica runs monthly masterclasses to showcase the best of Spanish gastronomy and culture. At its Casimiro Mahou food pairing experience, our host began by regaling the group with stories of the Mahou family, a humble beer brewing family from Madrid. We were then introduced to the custom of pairing these artisan beers with Ibérica’s tapas, created by three-Michelinstarred chef Nacho Manzano. The first tipple we sampled was the Marcenado, a light wheat beer, accompanied by scallop with seaweed purée, hollandaise and celery. The freshness of the scallop paired perfectly with the light tones of the Marcenado, Mahou’s first ever beer. Next came the Maravillas, a strong lager with an even

stronger aftertaste, counter-balancing the taco of quail with marinated apple that we ate for our second course: it was a sweet and bitter pairing. Our final drink was the Jacometrezo, a dark, fruity ale. The pairing tips we were given suggested game meat, and we had our fair share in the morteruelo with wild mushroom vinaigrette and pine nuts. This traditional country pâté was said to feed entire families for days, so the fruitiness of the ale was essential against the deeply rich flavours of the morteruelo. We finished the evening with a Tarta de Santiago, and were told to save some of the Jacometrezo from the previous course, but our glasses seemed to have emptied themselves. Thyme

T

aking part in the cookery school at Thyme is like living out the The Food Network. Situated in a state-of-the art modern Bulthaup kitchen annexed to the hotel’s medieval barn, it’s a location that wouldn’t look out of place in an episode of Simply Nigella, and its charms are more than superficial. Thyme’s flagship class is called The Instinctive Cook, a wide-ranging introduction to the culinary arts that begins with the ingredients rather than the recipe, in the form of a stroll through Thyme’s kitchen gardens and farm. However, I’m here on a foggy and cold weekend in early March to experience the Asian cooking class (with my mum in tow). We spend an extremely pleasant few hours discovering the mysteries of laksa and Malaysian cuisine under the expert tutelage of culinary director and head chef Daryll Taylor. Although you can opt for more intimate classes, we’re here as part of a group of nine wannabechefs, which makes for a jovial (and somewhat competitive) atmosphere. Taylor begins the class with a demonstration, where he talks us through each ingredient one by one, and explains its role in the dish. We recognise some familiar friends (shallots, garlic, lime) and make several new ones (kaffir lime leaves, palm sugar and coriander seeds, to name a few). Next we hustle to our respective stations and take up tools in preparation for an epicurean battle, the likes of which haven’t been seen since the last MasterChef final. After sneaking plenty of glances around the room to see how the others are faring, we finally plate up and emerge from the kitchen, orangefingered from the turmeric, to digest what we’ve just learned (and our laksa). If you’re not one for the hands-on approach, there’s still plenty of foodie treats to enjoy – namely dining at The Swan. You’ll earn your dinner with a short but atmospheric walk through the village (lit by your very own lantern). And, after all that good food, you’ll deserve a comfortable rest, which you’ll get in spades if you opt to stay in one of Thyme’s sumptuous guestrooms. What bliss. tarted by coffee-cart barista Robert Robinson, Brazilian coffee-farmer descendant Fabio Ferreira and former music shop proprietors Alan and Marion Goulden, the last six years have seen Notes go from strength to strength. With six branches across London – including a site in Crossrail Place that opened in May last year – the start of 2016 saw the brand open a state-of-the-art roastery, allowing them to prepare beans brought in from around the globe and bag-up close to 4.5 tonnes of coffee a month without ever leaving E14. We managed to catch up with Robert and Fabio to see how they’ve been settling in so far.

What makes Notes unique? We always thought that the coffee market was going to develop towards higher quality, and that’s definitely happened. We try and combine really high quality coffee with speedy service – after all, our customers in Canary Wharf certainly aren’t going to wait around, no matter how good the coffee is. People do really appreciate the better quality, and all our coffees are single origin (meaning we don’t mix or blend them), so you can really taste what’s coming out of the beans. We also encourage people to try our filter coffees, which are full of amazing delicate flavours thanks to the light roast we use to enhance the natural

acidity and sweetness, allowing the full flavours to come through. What brought you to Crossrail Place? We’ve always wanted to open in Canary Wharf. There are just so many people and such a market for really good coffee. Coming to Crossrail Place gives people a chance to relax and unwind. The biggest challenge here has been meetings people’s expectations for speed of service, but we were expecting that. s weekend breaks go, a destination that enables you to leave your desk at 5pm and be in your hotel room at 8pm dressing for dinner, has huge potential. The Club Hotel & Spa is situated in St Helier, Jersey, a somewhat gentrified English coastal resort (complete with ice-cream flavours such as tiramisu), and a 45-minute flight from London. However, its main draw is the fact that its been awarded its ninth consecutive Michelin star for the food at Bohemia, an in-house restaurant under the helm of chef, Steve Smith: order the Prestige menu here and you’ll find yourself still sat five hours later, devouring the best of 12 courses, surrounded by wood panelling that might just remind you of your lawyer’s offices. Artistic, delicious dishes include smoked grouse (served nestled in hay, for fun) and a gin fizz sorbet that goes down a litte too easily. Oh – and save space for after-dinner excess from the cheese

trolley – it arrives well-stocked when you think you can’t eat anything else, ever. Unsurprisingly, most people go for supper, but the hotel also offers a great afternoon tea and has a simple spa with a steam room and a salt cabin; the latter is said to help cleanse the respiratory system and aid relaxation. Massage treatments come highly recommended and our tester described the swimming pool as ‘deadly quiet’ – just how we like it after a busy week at work. When you’re ready to hit the sack, bedrooms at The Club are modestly-sized but smart and immaculate. Then again, Smith’s expertise is worth the trip alone. And you can travel here in the knowledge that if you’re desperately needed back in the Big Smoke, you can arrive home within a couple of hours, tops. anding on the volcanic island of Nevis – which we accessed by eightseater charter plane from Antigua – is a sure-fire way to transition from London pace to island life in the 20-or-so seconds it takes to get from one end of its tiny runway to the other. As we descend, a rainforest-clad 985m peak, topped with fluffy white clouds, towers on one side and the sea stretches out on the other. Lesser-known that its neighbour St Kitts, the island offers not only peaceful resorts for reclining in the sun and relaxing the body, but enough natural wonders to keep the eyes and mind occupied too. Nevis has a population of just 12,000 people, but it’s home to nearly double that number of monkeys. The small vervets aren’t hard to spot, and they’re fun to watch – they’re notorious for stealing sugary rum cocktails from beachgoers. Luckily for us, the monkeys haven’t yet discovered our resort – and while we’re staying on Nevis, Paradise Beach remains blissfully free of the food and drink thieves. It does, however, provide sanctuary for hummingbirds, with ixora, firecracker and hibiscus flowers planted in the gardens to attract them. To say the gardens at Paradise Beach are lush would be an understatement – palms stretch taller than some of the villas’ rooftops, ripe avocados hang from trees over the villas’ patios, asking to be picked, and tropical flowers cloak the resort in reds, pinks and whites. The villas themselves (two-, three- and fourbedroom) all have plunge pools and are spacious and comfortable. I sit in a corner windowseat, propped up by a heap of cushions with the intention to read my book, but not even a page in, I am distracted by views of the ocean. The novelty of the outdoor shower – attached to my en-suite bathroom, well-stocked with Hermès

products and surrounded by greenery-topped walls for privacy – doesn’t quite wear off either. It beats the pool and sea hands down as a way to cool off after an early morning yoga session on the beach (fixing my eyes on the horizon where sea meets sky as I wobble into warrior pose, is a far better view than finding a spot in the mirror at my local gym). But the best thing about Paradise Beach is the food. I ask our butler Davie what national Nevitian dishes are, and the next thing I know, she tells us tomorrow’s breakfast will be a typical Caribbean breakfast of Johnny Cakes and salt fish – a mix of white fish, onions, green peppers and a hot sauce kick with deep-fried, doughy dumplings – cooked in our villa’s kitchen by our private chef. For dinner one evening we are served a locally caught mahi mahi fish with polenta, okra and squash – all are similarly fresh and full of flavour. Throughout their stay at the resort, guests can dine in their villas or on the beach, and chefs will also give private cooking tutorials on request. Davie’s willingness to tailor our experience is just right, but the butler service is unfussy: there if we want it, but hands-off enough to maintain privacy and space. And if it’s possible to have enough of drinking rum punch on the the beach, there’s plenty of Nevis to explore. It takes just a gentle 20-minute cycle along quiet roads – the island is so tiny, it has not one set of traffic lights – to reach the island’s small capital Charlestown. Among the colonial-style shops and houses decorated in turquoise and yellow, is a small supermarket, a vintage-looking library and a market selling local fruit and vegetables: it’s a brightly coloured tropical beach town with lashings of Victorian seaside charm. The old-stone Cotton Ginnery, where cotton was processed, and the Museum of Nevis History in Hamilton House, dating back to 1680 and overlooking Charleston Harbour, offer a clearer picture of its past. The latter was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, who went on to help draft the US Constitution and was an outspoken advocate of the abolition of slavery. Outside Charleston’s charming clutches, the ruins of sugar mills lie between more tidy, brightlypainted homes. In 1700 the island was responsible for 20 per cent of the British Empire’s sugar production. But it is most famous for being where British Admiral, Lord Horatio Nelson, met and fell in love with Nevis-born Fanny Nisbet; the pair

married under a silk cotton tree in the grounds of the island’s Montpelier Plantation, and as long, lazy days stretch into romantic sunsets, it’s not difficult to understand why. Active types can take snorkelling trips off the coast of Nevis – I spotted parrot fish and angel

fish, and if you’re lucky you may encounter sea turtles. Alternatively, a walk up the peak requires a reasonable level of fitness, but will easily justify a few post-hike rum punches later. On the way up our guide, Baba, shares his botanical knowledge with us, pointing out which plants are said to cure particular ailments: used since Amerindians inhabited the island, long before Christopher Columbus first arrived in 1493, the leaves of the soursop tree are said to help babies sleep, trumpet leaves alleviate colds and flu, and guava helps digestive ailments. Baba also stops to show us the workings of a monkey trap with rather interesting advice – “if you see tree mutton on a menu in a restaurant, it’s monkey,” he says. We see the remnants of a monkey’s feast – half-eaten fruit scattered across the rainforest floor – but that and a tail dangling from a tree are the only other signs of them. We do, however, find a freshwater crayfish in a rockpool by a waterfall. Back on the beach, the knots from my hike are kneaded away in a ‘Caribbean-style massage’ – a

The horses pace in a line – organised to reflect their own social hierarchy – through bush and past local houses. We make it back to the beach again just in time to catch the setting sun, and the horses trot along with water lapping at their hooves. It’s cheesy, but being under a gorgeous carmine-streaked sky, really is a bucket list moment. Nevis is one for those seeking the simple pleasures of island life.

COOL As companies move to acknowledge the merits of happy, engaged employees, corporate training is more holistic than it used to be. We take a look at the how, what and why of the latest options for the office away-day WORDS: charlotte phillips

he ‘new’ corporate training is a serious business. The UK spend per year on supplementary workshops is somewhere between £30billion and £50billion, and it’s different to the ‘old’ staff training of PowerPoint presentations in draughty boardrooms. Britain has changed, and the ideals of working life with it. From a nation of industry to a nation of information, through the boom and bust of the dotcom era and nineties hedonism displaced by the recession, today corporate training regimes focus on the mental as much as the physical. The aim? Happy and healthy employees. “Whereas we used to see training focused on more specific and quite narrow skills, like public speaking or sales, now there is a trend for training that goes much deeper and addresses much bigger issues,” says Sophie Paton, business director at business and communications consultancy Make Happy (makehappy.co.uk).

“One element of corporate training is improving culture, with the logic that happy, focused employees perform best” “Rather than providing information and practice around a specific topic, it’s about changing behaviours and giving people tools and ways of thinking that they can use in any situation.” While practical skills like presentation abilities and teamwork are still important, so too are personal attributes like mindfulness and positive mental thinking. One element of corporate training is improving culture, with the logic that motivated, focused employees perform best. “It is essential to examine our internal world of feelings, values and what is meaningful to us in order to create an experience of overall fulfilment in our career,” explains psychologist, Elaine Slater. She adds that an activity such as mindfulness “encourages focusing on the present moment rather than being consumed by the difficulties of the past, or anxiety over the future. It promotes a deep engagement and connectedness to yourself, others and your surroundings.” Companies are taking heed. Say bye-bye to stuffy conferences and monotonous speakers. Here’s our pick of the most innovative corporate training programmes out there...

THE STAGE-BASED ONE If you’re nervous about public speaking, taking to the stage may not initially seem natural, but think again: The Old Vic theatre runs corporate training days to help conquer those fears. Jennifer Fordham oversees the programme, which has been undertaken by companies including Marks & Spencer. Working with employees of all levels, from boardroom execs to social media staff, there are four main training options: personal presence and impact, building influence and rapport, creating and developing a team, and leadership. Customised packages are also available – when PwC wanted help with a strategy launch, it got it. The experience is certainly different to what you’d get in a boardroom: specialists such as BBC scriptwriters and voice dialogue experts help corporate big shots learn stage-based techniques like breathing, body language – “how you say something is as important as what you say,” Fordham explains – and voice projection.

“Scriptwriters and voice experts help corporate big shots learn breathing and body language” The skills that actors use to engage and deliver a compelling performance are equally beneficial for closing deals, but are often overlooked in an office environment. “The dynamics and relationship between an actor and the audience and the director and the production company, mirror those found in boardrooms. They’re fundamental skills.” Physically leaving the corporate environment is beneficial, too. “[Participants are] on the stage, standing where the greats have stood: Judi Dench, Laurence Olivier. It’s a beautiful period building that’s removed enough from an everyday safe place, but not too far out their comfort zone. On the stage, one can fail and that’s OK,” says Fordham. Following demands from business leaders, The Old Vic is launching specific drama-based training for women this spring. “Women still need more support for top roles, especially at board level,” she explains. “Our guest speakers will really focus on that.” The Old Vic corporate training (for existing corporate donors) from £3,000, oldvictheatre.com

THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL ONE The company One Thought’s corporate training programme focuses on bringing out the potential of employees, believing it is employees who determine the success or failure of a business. It promises enhanced relationships, reduced staff turnover and increased revenues: just ask clients SAB Miller, Zetter Group and the US Army. Forget techniques like mindfulness and meditation: co-founder Aaron Turner believes those shouldn’t be necessary. “It’s like with a detox,” he says. “If you’re not toxic, you don’t need to detox. If you always have a clear mind – which should be the default – you don’t need to meditate to create clarity.” One Thought aims for an entire recalibration of the mind, applicable to the office and everywhere else. Training takes place off-site over three to five days and the process is simple: talking, and lots of it, about how we have the power to shape our state of mind. “It changes constantly. Whether we realise it or not, our decisions are shaped by the state of our mind at that particular moment.” The ideal state of mind is one where you don’t allow yourself to be influenced by external factors, so success stories, Turner says, include employees no longer blaming bosses or colleagues for mistakes or bad moods. “State of mind is a core corporate value,” Turner says. “It enriches all experiences, so colleagues are happier and ultimately, more productive. “Often, we speak to businesses who have identified a problem and put processes in place to fix it, but they haven’t identified state of mind as an issue.” Psychologist Elaine Slater agrees that mindfulness can work. “We’re no longer fully present in the world we live in. Harvard research shows that our minds are distracted and lost in thought 47 per cent of the time,” she says. There’s no specific technique introduced by One Thought to change one’s state of mind; just an understanding that it’s wholly possible seems to unlock the ability to do so. And sceptics, take note: James Layfield is the founder and CEO of Central Working, a co-working space connecting entrepreneurs that has been trying it out. “Our team are more present,” he says. “We can achieve more with fewer people and our clients love the experience they get. It has, however, been undertaken by companies including Google, British Airways and Canary Wharf-based KMPG and Thomson Reuters. Tough Mudder aims to bring company employees together through teamwork created via physical activities such as running races, raft-building and obstacle courses in an outdoor environment. The aim is to foster solid relationships that endure back in the boardroom. It works, says Christina Epling, global corporate sales director for Tough Mudder, precisely because people are more open-minded outside of the office. “It allows participants to work closely, to push each other to reach new obstacles and face fears, problem-solve and overcome barriers,” Epling explains. “It can’t be taught in an office or by an HR executive. It allows teams to see colleagues’ personality traits, complement each others’ strengths and weaknesses, and work with people they might not typically converse with in their

normal work environment,” she adds. One attendee explains: “We are going to have ‘Arctic’ experiences in our workdays. Just having those memories is important to pull from and to laugh about and also to remember the effect that we have on each other when we work together.” A Tough Mudder challenge is not just about making friends with the accounts team, however. Epling believes that the skills learned when tackling physical obstacles are equally relevant for working on a client pitch, as “it makes teams stronger, smarter, more productive, increases positive attitude and improves problem-solving.” More than with other options, which focus on holistic personal skills applicable for oneself outside the office, Tough Mudder is about teamwork and building relationships. Monitoring emails at work Do employees have a right to privacy in the office?

LEGAL issues M

r B˘arbulescu worked in a company where there was a policy against the personal internet usage. At his employer’s request Mr B˘arbulescu created a Yahoo Messenger account for responding to clients’ enquiries, but was later told that his account had been monitored, which showed he had used it for personal purposes. Mr B˘arbulescu denied this, so the employer provided transcripts of various personal messages he had sent to family members. Mr B˘arbulescu was dismissed for breach of company policy. Mr B˘arbulescu unsuccessfully challenged his dismissal in court. He appealed to the ECtHR, claiming his privacy had breached. The ECtHR accepted Mr B˘arbulescu’s right to privacy was engaged, but found that his employer had accessed the Yahoo Messenger account assuming it contained only professional (and not personal) information, and that it was not unreasonable for an employer to want to verify that an employee is completing his professional tasks during working hours. The ECtHR decided the monitoring was limited in scope and proportionate and therefore there was no

breach of Mr Ba˘ rbulescu’s privacy. So why is this not a licence for employers to start reading all of their employees’ emails? Firstly, it should be noted the ECtHR has previously found there to be breaches of the right to privacy where employers have monitored employees’ emails. Mr B˘arbulescu’s situation was slightly unusual however. Not only was he working for a company that completely banned personal use of the internet, but he was also using Yahoo Messenger where you cannot assign “private and personal” subject headings to messages like you can in email. Had those facts been different, the ECtHR may well have found Mr B˘arbulescu to have a reasonable expectation of privacy. Secondly, UK courts are not bound by judgments of the ECtHR: the Human Rights Act makes it clear that judges only have to “take into account” such judgments. There is therefore no obligation to strictly follow B˘arbulescu. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the protection of employees’ privacy goes beyond simply ECtHR decisions. Monitoring employees’ emails involves processing personal data, meaning the Data Protection

Act (‘DPA’) applies, with the principle that personal data must be processed fairly and lawfully being particular relevant. The Information Commissioner has helpfully published the Employment Practices Code which sets out recommendations as to how meet the DPA’s legal requirements. It highlights the need to not only put in place a detailed electronic communications and monitoring policy, but also the requirement to communicate this to employees. However, it remains the case that employers can, in limited situations, monitor employees’ emails. If an employee is worried about email monitoring they would be welladvised to refrain from sending personal emails from their work account, or if that is not possible to at the very least clearly mark any such emails as personal. Quayola - Laocoön

25 April – 24 June Lobby, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf Quayola’s artistic practice encompasses audio-visual performance, time-based digital sculpture, drawing, photography and software programming, through which he explores the fine boundary between the real and the artificial. Special institutional commissions have allowed him rare access to the art and architecture of churches, theatres and museums in Europe, including Notre Dame and the Vatican, whose original masterpieces and collections become raw canvas in his hands. For Canary Wharf, Quayola has created a new sculptural group based on his ongoing research into classical iconography – a re-interpretation of the iconic sculpture Laocoön and His Sons in the Vatican Collection. Through computational methods, the geometry of the original sculpture is transformed into an abstract composition and the resulting sculpture loses its historical iconographic connotations while retaining the same proportions, tensions and equilibrium of the original subject. In Quayola’s hands it becomes an object of contemplation that documents harmonious collisions between old and new, and explores the hybrid space between figurative, abstract, real and artificial. The sculpture is designed using custom computer software and fabricated using large-scale 3D printing technology. Cubitt Town’s Rain Forest Mural Until 11 May

The word ‘redevelopment’ often strikes fear in the heart of those it impacts. This was the case for many residents on the New Union Wharf Estate on the Isle of Dogs – until, that is, the children from Cubitt Town Junior School (many of whom live on the Estate) found themselves involved in designing a rainforest mural to brighten up 200ft of grey hoarding. Working in collaboration with Hills Partnership, East Thames and local artist Murude Mehmet, along with local residents and volunteers, they spent weekends, evenings and art lessons turning the design into reality. Residents now wake up to images of frogs, birds and many other beautiful creatures instead of a blank grey wall. Cyclists, runners and walkers often comment on the amazing piece of work, which has become a real talking point in the community. Why the rainforest? Although the rainforest only covers six per cent of the Earth’s surface it contains more than half of the world’s plants and species. Diverse, beautiful and ever changing, each creature and plant has a place and a reason for being, a little like red bricks in the urban environment. Jimin Chae has developed his own artistic language in paintings that combine realism with hints of expressionistic brushstrokes to recreate static moments derived from his daily life. Always drawn to peaceful settings, he carefully observes these moments of calm to select scenes that have narratives of their own, which he then collages on his canvas, adding a new dimension to the composition. At first glance, viewers see saturated colour planes with a person or persons gazing on different items or into another space. off track Move over Range Rover: let Bentley take over. Bentley’s new 4x4 elbows everything aside as it climbs to the top of the luxury SUV class with its very first SUV, Bentley Bentayga. WORDS: matthew carter

I

’m driving a luxury 4x4 at a fair pace along some tight and twisty back roads. Progress is rapid, cornering and grip impressive while the engine is whisper quiet. The roads lead to a deserted quarry where a rotary dial on the centre console is switched from on-road to off-road mode, and off we go scrabbling over rocks, accelerating up impossibly steep dirt track climbs, inching down equally steep descents and tip-toeing tentatively over precarious looking bridges fabricated from what looks like a couple of fallen trees. It competes the course with ease. Time for another test. After a spot of high-speed motorway running, that dial is switched to offroad mode again, this time to the ‘sand’ setting and away we go bounding over desert dunes as if we were in a buggy. The fact that we almost get stuck near the peak of one dune is down to operator error (mine) rather than the car’s ability. What next? Oh yes, for something completely

different we leave the sand behind and seek out a race circuit where the car’s power and handling capabilities can be better explored. Once again, it comes out with flying colours. Any car that can handle road and track, offroad rocks and shifting sand with equal aplomb is impressive, but frankly not so unusual these days. The Range Rover can do it, as can the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7. No doubt the soon to be launched Jaguar F-Pace will master such tests, too. What makes this car different is the badge nose and rump – Bentley. Yes, Bentley, maker of svelte coupés and cabrios and ultra luxury limos, has produced a four-wheel-drive Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) even though the word ‘utility’ is not in the company lexicon of terms. It’s called Bentayga and I can hear you asking ‘why’? It’s named after a mountainous area of Gran Canaria, but beyond that, I have no idea. Why did the luxury car manufacturer develop an

off-roader? That’s easier to explain. Research told Bentley’s marketing bods that a high percentage of their customers had more than one car. And nine times out of ten one of the other cars nestling up to a Continental GT or a Mulsanne in their garage was a luxury SUV. And so it came to pass. Bentley reckons Bentayga is the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV in the world. What about the top Range Rover, you say? Well, the recently introduced supercharged V8-powered Range Rover SV Autobiography isn’t as powerful, isn’t as fast, isn’t as luxurious and looks like a Range Rover, so is far from exclusive. But at £165,000 on the road, price wise it stops where the Bentley starts. Bentley is part of the Volkswagen Group, of course, and it has been able to plunder technology from its siblings to develop Bentayga. Under the largely aluminium body lies a platform that will underpin the new Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. The 4x4 chassis is also a group development and when the £4,520 All-Terrain Specification option box is ticked, it has four on-road and four off-road modes controlled by the centre console.

Bentayga differs technically from the Audi and Porsche in its all-new Dynamic Ride electric air suspension set-up The default setting is ‘Bentley’ which blends the refinement of Comfort and body control of the Sport settings, or you can use Custom to choose your own preferred setting. Off-road settings optimise the chassis for Snow & Grass, Dirt & Gravel, Mud & Trail or Sand Dunes. Bentayga differs technically from the Audi and Porsche in its all-new Dynamic Ride electric air suspension set-up, that counteracts lateral roll when cornering far quicker than a conventional system can manage and it really works. And it’s mightily different under the bonnet, where a new version of Bentley’s remarkable British-built W12-cylinder engine lives. This twin turbo work of art develops 600hp and a scarcely believable 900 Nm of torque. It also incorporates fuel saving measures such as Variable Displacement that shuts down half the engine under light loads, while the pair of twinscroll turbochargers mean quicker response times, as

reflected in the 4.0 sec 0-60mph time. Top speed is 187mph – not bad for a 4x4 that weighs 2.4 tonnes. As those figures suggest, Bentayga is sports car quick yet it remains limousine-like in its refinement. The superb eight-speed automatic shifts gear unobtrusively and the sound of thunder from under the bonnet is always distant. Driver technology is at the cutting-edge with a vastly improved navigation system and driver safety systems that use sensors, cameras and radar to monitor the outside world. And finally, Bentley has engineered the gear paddles so they move with the steering wheel rather than remain obstinately static behind it. Aesthetically speaking you’ll need to tick a few options to get the most from the car. For example, the show model – finished in a rather splendid Verdant green exterior shade (one of 107 colours on the chart) with a saddle leather interior – had £54,500 worth of optional extras, taking the total bill to nearly £215,000. Bentley expects most new Bentaygas to top £200,000. Disappointments? Well, only one and that’s really a matter of personal taste. To these eyes it doesn’t look as special as, say, the Continental GT manages to do even now, some 13 years down the line. The front, with its large diamond hatch grille, and the strong rear haunches are typically bold Bentley features but the rear end is, well, a bit ordinary to be honest. Bentley has more then doubled production to 5,000 units… and each one has already been bagged. When, in due course, less expensive petrol/electric hybrid and (whisper it) diesel versions are launched, annual sales are likely to be considerably higher still. Little wonder Bentley is in the middle of a £840 million expansion programme at its home in Crewe. Range Rover, you need to be worried.

he property market in Canary Wharf is in good health. While we have a couple of uncertainties on the horizon in the form of an increase in stamp duty on second homes and the EU referendum, the market is still buoyant and transactions levels are high. Clearly all vendors need to be aware of these impending issues, and as a result ensure that properties are priced correctly. The highest price quoted by an agent does not make them the best placed agent to sell your property. While we all want to sell our properties for as much as possible, it is often the case that by sensibly pricing your property you will ultimately achieve the best price. When you appoint your agent, price and fee are of course big drivers, but you should also look at what that agent can do for you. Do they have a local office network? The crossover of buyers between areas means that your property will get greater exposure to a larger buyer base. Do they have international reach? With London being considered a safe haven for property investment all around the world, why would you preclude yourself from having your property exposed worldwide? Can the agent demonstrate that they have sold similar properties? Just because an agent says they are active in an area, does not mean that they are going to have the ability to sell your property; make sure they have sold in your development before. Do they have experienced negotiators? If they only have very inexperienced staff then the chances of you getting the best price for your property are severely limited. So while it is important to consider price and fee, it is also important to consider other factors, particularly when there are uncertainties in the market. During times of uncertainties, the choice of agent becomes even more fundamental, experience in this industry really does count for a lot.

T

he performance of the prime central London lettings market has historically been linked to the health of the financial services sector. It is therefore unsurprising that against the background of volatility on global financial market, rental value growth in prime central London has been declining since May 2015. The start of 2016 has been overshadowed by fears surrounding the impotence of central banks, and the prospect of negative interest rates triggered a fall in the share price of European banks and spread uncertainty in markets already digesting low oil prices and a Chinese economic slowdown. As a result of this uncertainty, rental values fell -0.1 per cent in February, which was the fifth consecutive decline and meant annual rental value growth, fell to -0.2 per cent. It was the first time annual rental value growth has been negative since June 2014. Average gross prime yields were flat at 2.92 per cent. This trend has been exacerbated by high supply levels, particularly at above £1,500 per week, as a result of more vendors deciding to let their properties due to uncertainty over taxation and price growth in the sales market. Consequently, tenants feel little urgency to agree deals and the result is that a growing number of landlords need to reduce their rental income expectations. More volatile economic conditions and a weaker financial services industry mean corporate budgets are reduced, which lowers demand for higher value rental property in particular. This effect can be seen when you juxtapose the annual rental value growth (one per cent) for properties worth less than £1,500 per week, with the -1.6 per cent decline for properties worth more than £1,500 per week. The same effect means that price growth for flats has out-performed houses in the last year. Given the supply and demand imbalance, there is also a marked difference between newly-refurbished and un-modernised properties. For example, in Marylebone, rental property in the best condition will achieve an average of £1.15 per sq ft per week, which compares to 80p per sq ft per week for properties that have not been updated. *This is an excerpt from Knight Frank’s Residential Research: Prime Central London Rental Index

AGENT FOCUS: cbre The Changing Face of Developments with CBRE As London continues to see a rapid rise in the construction of new build developments, two of CBRE’s experts comment on the diversification of the market, new sales technologies and how the consumer must always remain at the centre of its business.

ith offices in Bond Street, Covent Garden and Canary Wharf, CBRE may not appear to have as many boots on the ground as other estate agencies, but it believes having fewer offices allows it the freedom to capitalise on London’s various burgeoning markets and new build developments. “Unlike other agents who may have a more high street presence, we aren’t bound to particular areas geographically, so tend to operate wherever our clients need us. Currently we are focusing our attention on Clerkenwell, Farringdon, the City and its surrounding areas. They were previously underrated but are now highly in demand both to live and work in,” says James Burrows, CBRE’s associate director of sales. The impending arrival of Crossrail in Farringdon is frequently cited as a factor in the increasing attention paid to this part of the city and Burrows offers statistics to back up the real-time effect on the cost of living in the area. “Since 2008, average house prices have increased by 62 per cent in these areas, which broadly compares to that of prime central London.” The rising prices seem to be prompting rising demands from buyers – whose checklist for

amenities from cinema rooms to spa facilities can be lengthy – and the last ten years in particular have seen a big increase in new build developments that can offer all of the mod cons. “The benchmark for luxury has just been raised so high in recent years and developers are much more sympathetic to buying habits,” suggests Burrows. “It naturally creates more demand in both the sales and lettings markets and also more choice, so buyers and tenants are far pickier.” In light of this, CBRE as well as the developers has had to plan its approach carefully to secure the ever more discerning buyers’ business. “We’ve always had a more cerebral approach to our work – it’s what made us the largest commercial property advisor in the world – and it’s an approach we’re now bringing to the residential market, using insight and analysis to identify the best opportunities and get the best value for our clients, whether it’s buying a property, or selling, letting or managing a current investment for them,” adds Mike Knowles, associate director of lettings. Capitalising on the improvements in technology, such as using virtual reality headsets to give buyers of off-plan properties a vision of their future home, is one such way agents can help their clients to make a more informed decision. year 2025, and CBRE are open to the potential of its use, as Knowles continues. “There is still a place for professional photographs but buyers and tenants can see past that and quite often this won’t show the whole property. It isn’t enough to be able to see what the property looks like from the outside anymore – you want to be able to imagine living there. We recently partnered with Virtual Walkthrough (who create 360 degree virtual tour software) so that we can show properties from a

viewer’s eye perspective.” Although such techniques may allow CBRE to remain ahead of the curve when it comes to new build properties, Knowles also believes that the market for older homes shouldn’t be neglected. “Clients expect all of the latest technology and state-of-the-art design from a new build development as well as extra amenities which don’t always come as standard in older developments, for example, a concierge, gym and swimming pools. That said however, the character of a second-hand home just cannot be beaten, so it does entirely depend on the buyer or tenants’ needs, whether that’s location, interior design, outside space, eco-characteristics or amenities. Essentially what is important and what is deemed as value for money or a good rental investment varies from person to person.” Such awareness of the complexities of the market and a solid understanding that a property purchase requires a personal approach when a client is investing significant funds, is what really makes CBRE stand out in such a competitive market.
