I spent the first half of July glued to the Summer Screens in Canada Square Park, where my al fresco lunch was accompanied by the gripping sporting endeavours of Murray and co during Wimbledon, and this month you can watch the world’s hottest athletes battle it out in the World Athletics Championships. So, that’s the entertainment sorted, now to decide what to eat. For a realm of exciting, international options, turn to Reuters Plaza, which offers global dining in the space of approximately 4,000 sq ft. Let’s start with Grill’d, a stalwart of Reuters Plaza and arguably the square’s most popular option – if that long snaking queue every lunchtime is anything to go by. Grill’d specialises in hearty salads, meaning you can feel virtuous without running the risk of being struck by crippling hunger pangs come three o’clock. Choose from toppings

anary Wharf is a hub of innovation, from thriving businesses and financial institutions to kinetic art on Level 39. So

it’s no wonder Street Feast’s latest food fest, Giant Robot, has popped up here. Housed in Crossrail Place, the street marketstyle selection of food trucks is giving small businesses the perfect platform to showcase their wares and sate young, hungry individuals. One example is José Pizarro’s Little José. “I didn’t really see any Spanish street food around, so I decided that I should do it myself,” he tells me. The most popular item is the bocadillo de queso de cabra: a ciabatta roll with fried goat cheese, aubergine, pine nuts and honey. I try it myself – in the name of thorough research, of course – and it’s utterly delicious, and just one of Little José’s tapas options catering to vegetarians and carnivores alike. Lisa Meyer is the founder of Yum Bun, offering steamed buns filled with ingredients such as slow-

I

t must be nice to love your job as much as Jeremy Jauncey does. Then again, it must be nice to have Jeremy Jauncey’s job. When the founder of Beautiful Destinations starts telling me about his business, and how he achieved the

holy grail of turning one’s hobby into a career, I am both jealous and desperate to know more. The 32-year-old’s CV is impressive, to say the least. Jauncey initially moved to New Zealand for a career in rugby, before turning his attention to e-commerce. He’s since founded and invested in multiple companies and was an ambassador for the UK in the UK Trade & Investment’s Global Entrepreneur Programme; all before founding his latest social media-inspired business venture, Beautiful Destinations, in 2012. “It all started when a community of people from all over the world with a passion for travel and photography came together,” Jauncey explains. “We would share each other’s work, celebrate the beauty of the world, and aim to inspire people to get out there and see it for themselves.” Soon enough, the Instagram page he had started had gained millions of followers and a renowned hotel reached out to collaborate, in the hopes of increasing its own social media following. And thus, a creative agency was born. The company evolved and Beautiful Destinations became the agency with the largest travel community on social media – we’re talking 13.5 million people

Jauncey laughs by way of response. “I think it’s important to recognise that this is just how the younger generation communicate nowadays. There will always be people who care more about what the perceived image is, no matter what the medium. What we are trying to do is motivate people to seize the moment and gain the experience, instead of going to take exactly the same shot.” The aspect of the business that is really growing, is the side working with brands. While Beautiful Destinations started off focusing on travel and discovering new places, the creative agency has gone from posting beautiful images and assisting hotels, to shooting campaigns for tourist boards and world-renowned fashion brands. “At first it was a challenge to convince brands to invest time into its social media. Although traditional marketing works, too, social media is where people are spending their time,” Jauncey explains. The proof is in the pudding: Beautiful Destinations has recently partnered with Orlebar Brown to create three bespoke shorts. “So much content is created online every day, and if you’re not putting in the time to get really good-quality content, you’re just not going to stand out. The same goes if you are an individual, a charity, anything. Social media has been so widely adopted that if you’re not on it, you really are missing out.” That’s why social-first content is what Jauncey and his team believe in. While brands tend to shoot campaigns first and then use those shots for social media, he recommends doing it backwards. “Our method has proven success. We shoot campaigns, discover which images are most popular and then use those across the rest of the brand’s marketing collateral.” The other aspect to really consider is video. “Mark Zuckerberg has

Facebook is looking at what people do when they’re online and an overwhelming majority are consuming, creating and sharing videos. So it’s an avenue we are really pushing.” Although Jauncey explains to me that meeting new people is his favourite part of the job, it’s clear to see that he is keen to make a difference. He explains that he’s had meetings with the UN to discuss how it can be more impactful and engage more with a younger audience, as well as meetings with tourism ministers of various countries, and also with charities, especially those focused on looking after the planet and animals. A polo match is either four, six or eight chukkas – a chukka being a period of seven minutes; the interval between each is three minutes. There are four players in a team, playing on a grass field up to 270m by 150m, with one or two umpires. Riders may make contact and push each other off the line of the ball, as long as elbows are not involved. Any time the ball crosses the line between the goalposts, it is considered a goal regardless of who knocks it through, including the pony itself.

We dine at Henley under billowing canopies, with British Polo Day managing director and partner Ben Vestey. He runs the impressive franchise alongside chairman Tom Hudson. The pair’s military background is evident in the fact that the entire day breezes past in delightful fashion without a hitch. While there are plenty of women among the spectators, it’s refreshing to find a sport displaying equality when it comes to on-field matters, too. “I’ve witnessed things get better and better for women as my career has progressed,” says Nina Clarkin, the British women’s number one player who is at Henley to hit the ball alongside Cambiaso in a charity game. “Now there is a defined path to a professional career.”

According to its Scandinavian design director Christine Hafsten (the eponymous Cath stepped down as creative director in 2014), it’s because “we are modern vintage. We have a wide range of both functional and trend-led products, and there is longevity in our homeware, fashion and gifts. We are customer-centric, whether it’s the fashion consumer or grandparents buying presents for their grandchild.” I have to agree. The British brand is evolving to keep up with changes in the fashion and lifestyle space. “We are constantly looking at the market. We are staying true to our brand, but working to use more muted, natural and wearable tones.” This is seen in raincoats and bags in particular, making these essential items easy to wear for women who can’t necessarily go into the office in bold head-to-toe brights. “Colour is so trend-driven,” Hafsten says. “We can do a lot each collection just by reimagining our prints in new colours.” Also, Hafsten says, “We see that a lot of young people are renting homes rather than buying. They tend to purchase small items rather than a large permanent set, so we focus on that. We’ve seen huge growth in pick-up items for home decor. I don’t know whether it’s down to Instagram and people wanting to stand out, but there is a trend for mixing and matching, and we are catering to that.” And while florals and bright colours may be what Cath Kidston is best known for, its animal prints – the little guinea pigs are adorable – and leather goods – “we now have a really fantastic leather supplier: it’s smooth, soft and really high quality” – are further examples of a brand that is doing it all in order to stay contemporary and ahead. As for existing and thriving within a digital space,

Hafsten points to the work of the communications team. It’s a case of working with social influencers and cocreating content across social channels, she says, to stay relevant to a younger audience who may have preconceived and incorrect ideas about what and who Cath Kidston represents. One special thing about the brand, Haftsen says, is that it functions like a luxury company, but offers a high street-friendly price point. “We have a print studio with 14 designers on site,” Hafsten says proudly. “I couldn’t believe it when I first walked in here. We come up with all our own prints and draw them all by hand.” This, she tells me, is extremely rare, in an age where prints are routinely bought from factories and mass-produced. Much more thought goes into the designs than I could have

imagined; not just conceiving the prints, but also where to place them, which bits to shade and shadow, and which to zoom in on if one part is blown up. The attention to detail and opportunity to really see a product through from start to finish, watching your vision materialise, is a luxury, Hafsten says. Now, Cath Kidston has 80 stores in the UK and a presence in 20 countries, with Japan its second biggest market after the UK. After such expansion and success, what still gives Haftsen a thrill? “Seeing our products on the street.” Her inspirations, too, are equally democratic: “Fine art, travel and real women, on the bus and on the street. I also ‘travel’ on Instagram – I start off somewhere and end up clicking through to a vintage store in Australia. I’m inspired by brands that have a clarity of vision and purpose, from [biscuit brand] Biscuiteers right through to J.J. Martin and her LaDoubleJ vintage store in Milan,” Hafsten says. When she travels, it’s often to cities where Cath Kidston has a presence, so she can see how people live day-to-

day and adapt the brand’s offerings accordingly, to tap into the lifestyle of a particular place. It’s an unbelievably personal way to approach designing for such a large brand. One of Cath Kidston’s popular stores is, of course, in Canary Wharf. “During the week, we have a strong lunchtime gifting trade, with people coming in to buy presents for baby showers, house warmings and so on. And then at the weekend, we see a great tourist trade,

Haftsen’s design team was given full access to the Walt Disney archives; a real opportunity to bring Disney characters to life, alongside Cath Kidston prints. More collaborations with other brands may happen, but it’s a case of ‘watch this space’, I’m told. When Hafsten relaxes, it’s mostly with her kids, exploring London’s parks and making the most of the fresh air. It’s important, she says, to step out of the office and into the world in order to do her job well. Next up for Cath Kidston is continuing to keep the brand relevant while staying true to its brightly coloured ’90s roots. Another aim, says Hafsten, is to ensure each new collection – there are ten drops each year – is surprising and different from the last. We can’t wait to see what the autumn range brings. realise he knows a thing or two about the good life, and with that quote firmly in mind, my adventure starts in Singapore. Just the short drive from the airport to the stunning Fairmont Singapore hotel gets me seriously excited. At first glimpse, this city is bustling, alive with people walking, talking and going about their day. The buildings themselves are impressive, with a skyline taking form in all manner of shapes and sizes. Stepping into the

ollowing in the footsteps of Beyoncé is never a bad way to start a holiday. It’s not our honeymoon, but when my partner and I arrive

in the scorching state of Arizona we’re headed for what was the star’s post-wedding destination. In our all-American SUV rental, it’s a short drive from Phoenix airport to Sanctuary Resort & Spa on the slopes of Camelback Mountain. After checking in, we’re whisked up to our casita in a golf buggy – walking in the so-called Valley of the Sun’s heat is definitely overrated – and are met with far-reaching views of Paradise Valley. The scene inside is equally impressive. Our contemporary living and dining space is decorated in neutral tones to complement the dusty terrain, while the metallic-tiled feature wall and curved freestanding tub in the bathroom are inviting after our long journey. Post-soak, we surrender to an early night, keen to catch the next morning’s sunrise from our private patio, before heading out into Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert.

Juggling an early alarm and the time difference, we arrive at Fort McDowell Adventures feeling a little sheepish at 6.30am, and are greeted by the cowboy hat and spurs-clad silhouette of our guide, Troy Haviland. We’re saddled up by 7am, aiming to complete a twohour horseback ride before the sun is too strong (it later reaches 39 degrees). Haviland’s stables are set in 25,000 acres of spectacular desert, on the 950-strong Native American Yavapai Nation reservation. During the peaceful, meandering trek through both open desert and shady tree-lined paths – one of which Haviland trims with a saw from his belt en route to clear the way (that’s desert life for you) – we spot a coyote, an eagle, wild horses and saguaro cacti that pepper every slope. Having always wanted to ride through water, splashing through the Verde River is a huge highlight of the morning – although I have difficulties persuading my horse not to lay down to cool off. It’s such a tranquil and secluded experience that we forget about everything, jetlag included. After a break in the shade, we’re ready to explore further, and head down the road to Pink Jeep Tours (its Scottsdale operation has now moved to Sedona) and climb into what looks remarkably like Barbie’s jeep, for a rugged off-road experience.

Flying over Tonto National Forest (the fifth largest in the US), the famed red rocks of Sedona and the Canyon itself are a breathtaking lesson in the state’s geography, and I’m torn between taking photos and simply staring out of the window and trying to remember it all. picnic spot of all time. Getting a perspective of the Canyon from above, and then a measure of its scale up close, is the perfect way to experience its arresting, unique beauty. Now fully versed in the cowboy lifestyle, on our last night we drive a short way to Cave Creek and dine at Bryan’s Black Mountain Barbecue restaurant. Its pulled pork, Six Pack Cowboy Beans and Frog Leg Fridays are true frontier fare, and serve as the perfect introduction to the amateur bullriding at The Buffalo Chip Saloon nearby. Our last day sadly comes and we join Rico Riley of Black Mountain Adventures, who hosts rock climbing on one of the resort’s towering boulder formations, to squeeze in one final adventurous encounter. It takes some motivational chants from Riley to keep me going when I have a wobble halfway, but scaling a sheer rock face, using only its tiny cracks and irregularities for hand holds – and reaching the top, might I add – is something I’ve still not finished boasting about. It proves to be the perfect feel-good activity to end on. For those needing to break free from their desks, Scottsdale’s natural wonders are worlds away from city life. Whether you’re rejuvenating in its elegant spa resorts, scaling rocks or rubbing shoulders with cowboys ringside, Arizona has far more to offer than a detour to see the Grand Canyon. Don’t forget to pack your cowboy hat.
