ike it or not, it’s Christmas. And if you’re anything like me, you’re sitting there wondering where on earth 2016 has gone – it seems mere moments ago that I was packing for summer holidays and rushing home to catch Wimbledon. It’s been a rollercoaster ride of a year, and in the spirit of going out with a bang, we’ve compiled a bumper issue for you, with everything you need to wrap up Christmas in style. Let’s start with some seasonal sparkle: Cartier’s managing director Laurent Feniou speaks to Olivia Sharpe on page 34 about his plans for 2017, while Cadenzza combines fine jewellery with fine dining in an opulent display on page 39. No festive feast is complete without Champagne, and on page 88 we meet Régis Camus, the man behind Piper-Heidsieck’s first prestige rosé cuvée. He is a man who strives for excellence and his latest creation is a triumph. Speaking of excellence, our interview with Elie Saab on page 46 reveals the designer’s deep-rooted love of couture and his unprecedented rise to global fame – from dressing society figures in Beirut to Hollywood’s crème de la crème. From one creative to another, artist Agnes Martin is celebrated this month in a retrospective at New York’s Guggenheim and a capsule collection by COS; Jack Watkins delves into her life and work (p. 24), and uncovers the truth behind an intriguing talent. Looking for gift inspiration? On page 52 founder of The White Company, Chrissie Rucker, picks out her festive favourites, while on page 70, new Jo Malone London Girl Karen Elson highlights her perfect perfumes. And for that tricky customer, Matthew Carter rounds up the best once-in-a-lifetime experiences on page 90. Here’s to a happy Christmas, and a prosperous New Year for all.

The reclusive artist Agnes Martin has inspired future generations, and now, a clothing collection at COS WORDS: JACK WATKINS

gnes Martin often speaks of joy; she sees it as the desired condition of all life,” wrote Wendy Beckett in her book American Masterpieces in 2001. “Who would disagree with her? No one who has seriously spent time before an Agnes Martin, letting its peace communicate itself, receiving its inexplicable and ineffable happiness, has ever been disappointed. The work awes, not just with its delicacy, but with its vigour, and this power and visual interest is something that has to be experienced.” Few people could be better fitted to extol the virtues of Agnes Martin’s paintings than the hermit figure of Sister Wendy, whose BBC programmes on art for a short period in the late 1990s attracted vast audiences. In terms of leading a life of solitude and quiet, the artist was her soulmate. Admittedly, Martin’s solo existence was partly enforced because, at various points in her life, she struggled with bouts of schizophrenia. In Nancy Princenthal’s biography, Agnes Martin: Her Life and Art, we learn that, at a time in the 1950s when Martin was living in lower Manhattan, fellow painter Robert Indiana, who lived nearby, happened “to encounter Agnes on South Street and she simply walked past me and didn’t recognise me”. Shortly afterwards, she was temporarily admitted to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital. But Martin was a genuine recluse, a seeker of spiritual purity, a serial rejecter of materialistic values. She believed that spiritual inspiration, not intellect, created great work. “Without awareness of beauty, innocence and happiness,” she wrote, “one cannot make works of art.” In 1967, just at the point when her gentle, lyrical abstracts were starting to attract critical acclaim on the New York scene, she abandoned her career to travel on her own through the Western states. She finally settled in New Mexico, living in adobe structures that she built herself. Acquiring a mystical reputation, she didn’t paint for seven years. Such was the admiration for her art, however, the hiatus did no lasting damage. Born into a prairie farming community in Canada in 1912, she died at the ripe old age of 92 in 2004, and her works have since sold for upwards of two and a half million dollars in the New York auction rooms. She is regularly cited as an

CANARY WHARF | 25

inspiration for subsequent generations of artists, even though her use of materials was almost unimaginably sparing, amounting to little more than a box of pencils, frugal amounts of paint, and a few rolls of masking tape. The Guggenheim Museum’s current Agnes Martin retrospective is the first since her death, and includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and a film, celebrating the full scope of Martin’s work. Key hangings include White Flower, Little Sister, and Fiesta. While Martin was frequently described as a Minimalist, she was less rigidly formulaic than many other artists in that field, and considered herself closer in spirit to Abstract Expressionism. She attempted to express something of the organic quality of nature, rejoicing in delicate, handcrafted surfaces. White Flower, for instance, has a grid that resembles woven fabric. Despite being completed in 1962, Little Sister – featuring brass nails – harks back to the artist’s experimental 1950s phase when she often used found objects. Given the large scale of the show, which includes more than 115 works spanning more than 50 years, it’s probably wise that they have opted to follow a chronological format. Tracey Bashkoff, senior curator of collections and exhibitions at the Guggenheim, says this allows the viewer “to trace the development and refinement of Martin’s subtle visual language.” She also says that the works are enhanced by being displayed against the distinctive curved lines of the Guggenheim’s Frank Lloyd Wright-designed rotunda. “Martin’s work changes with distance,” she explains. “Up close, you see the painstakingly fine details, but as you move away, the lines blend, creating patterns and textures, until you see the work almost as monochromatic squares with a hint of something more. Having her retrospective in the Guggenheim rotunda, with its niches and vistas, gives the unique opportunity to see the work transform through time and space.” And for all Martin’s years in the desert of New Mexico, New York City was also vital to her development. “She was very much part of the New York art scene in the 1950s and

1960s,” points out Bashkoff. “She interacted and socialised with a number of artists, some established, like Ad Reinhardt and Barnett Newman, and others still emerging, like Ellsworth Kelly and Lenore Tawney. The artists she got to know had various styles and ways of thinking about art, and that kind of diversity of ideas, and the energy that comes with it, can fuel creativity. Martin brought her own perspective to those conversations, and as she did, established a distinct, innovative style that she would remain committed to for the rest of her career.” Of course, this is not a show to whiz around. Martin is not an artist who offers a quick visual fix, no immediate, easily assimilated message. She once said that anyone looking at her paintings should take “just about one minute” in front of an individual piece. That may sound modest, but remember the average time people spend in front of the Mona Lisa is reckoned to be only 15 seconds. A minute is longer than it seems. Meanwhile, Bashkoff has her own advice on how to enjoy Martin in the gallery. “Look at the works close up, and appreciate the details, the quality of the surface and the scale and rhythm of the compositions. Then take advantage of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture and notice how the art transforms with distance.” Hauntingly luminous, the works of Martin beg to be “experienced” as much as looked at. Only then may we possibly begin to understand what the painter meant when she said: “Beauty and perfection are the same. They never occur without happiness.” The Agnes Martin retrospective is at the Guggenheim Museum until 11 January 2017, 1071 5th Avenue, New York, guggenheim.org/exhibition/agnes-martin. To celebrate the Guggenheim exhibition, COS has created a capsule collection inspired by the art of Agnes Martin. Based upon her iconic geometric compositions, the COS design team has created a unique set of prints for the 12-piece collection of men’s and women’s wear. A percentage of the profits will be donated to the Agnes Martin Foundation. COS, Jubilee Place

Montblanc and Chopard celebrated SalonQP with the launch of new timepieces in November. Montblanc used the UK’s largest premium watch show to unveil the Orbis Terrarum Special Edition Great Britain, a world-time wristwatch with a dial adorned with a Union Jack; Chopard debuted an 18-karat rose gold version of its L.U.C GMT One. Elsewhere, Girard-Perregaux marked its 225th year by exhibiting a collection of 225 unique timepieces, which are usually housed in its La Chaux-de-Fonds-based HQ. Curated shows educated guests on the history of the diving watch, the emergence of ‘travel time’ pieces, and a range of rare skills that the watch industry is almost singlehandedly responsible for keeping alive. Established in 2009, SalonQP has been hosted in the Saatchi Gallery for the past six years. The event has operated as part of the Telegraph Media Group since 2014. salonqp.com

MB&F’s Mad Mad World If you’re familiar with MB&F, you’ll know that the brand’s creations seldom sit within one product category. While they do indeed tell the time, MB&F watches display the hours, minutes and seconds of the day in such inventive and intricate ways that to categorise them merely as timepieces would be to do a disservice to company founder, Max Büsser. Büsser doesn’t create watches; he conceives machines. The latest of which, the Horological Machine N°8 (HM8 – pictured right), is inspired by a Can-Am race car. It inverts a Girard-Perregaux base movement so that a battle-axe-shaped winding rotor faces upward, positioned between two ‘roll bars’ and visible through anti-reflective sapphire-crystal glass. Dual optical prisms vertically display bi-directional jumping hours and trailing minutes. As you can see, it’s not your typical piece of wrist wear. Then again, there’s rarely anything conventional about Büsser’s works of art, watch-wise or other. Having worked previously with high-end

watch news Words: richard brown

clockmaker, L’Epée 1839, to co-create a table clock, and with music box specialist, Reuge, to launch a mechanical, music-playing minispaceship, Büsser recently branched even further away from traditional watchmaking. His latest partnership, with coveted pen and crayon maker Caran d’Ache, is the Astrograph, a fountain pen designed to resemble a space rocket. Available in high-gloss rhodium, sandblasted matt rhodium or anthracite ruthenium, an ‘entry door’ to the rocket, concealed in the ring of the pen, activates the lowering of three stabiliser legs, on which the Astrograph can stand. The pen, comprising 99 components, comes with a miniature, magnetic astronaut figurine and a presentation box in the form of a launch pad. What to get the man who already has everything this Christmas? Max Büsser has just provided the answer. Horological Machine N°8, £66,900, Astrograph pen, £19,995, mbandf.com

Cape Cod’s Landmark Year When Apple was looking for a way of elevating its first smartwatch from geeky gadget to executive accessory, it was telling that the tech giant chose to talk to fashion types through a collaboration with Hermès. Not for nothing is the (almostentirely) family-owned French fashion house one of the most coveted luxury goods specialists on the planet. The Apple Watch Series 2 dropped in September, and, with it, the news that Hermès would continue making leather straps for a special edition of the timepiece, into which Apple would incorporate watch faces based on the Hermès Clipper, Espace and Cape Cod – the last of which is currently celebrating its 25th birthday. Launched in 1991, the Cape Cod was designed by Henri d’Origny, who had previously created the Hermès Arceau and Clipper, and took its inspiration from the chain of an anchor. Several new iterations of the Cape Cod have been launched during 2016. A men’s model is now available with a cuff-style wristband, while dial options have expanded to include mother-of-pearl, white lacquer, onyx and lapis lazuli. New gem-set editions have also been added. uk.hermes.com

Lange’s Honey Trap There’s a reason that all A. Lange & Söhne datedisplaying timepieces are photographed with 25 in their date window. On 24 October 1994, Walter Lange held a press conference announcing the restoration of the company his greatgrandfather had established in 1845. Knowing that daily newspapers would be reporting the announcement the following day, Lange set the date on his new flagship Lange 1 wristwatch to 25, and, alas, a tradition was born. To mark that watch’s 22nd birthday, the brand has unveiled a ‘Dresden’ edition of the Lange 1 Time Zone. Differentiating the special issue from its standard version are subtle colour changes; the dots between city names and GMT are blue instead of red, as is the previously black peripheral ring of the second time zone. Not so subtle is the replacing of ‘Berlin’ with ‘Dresden’ to represent Central European Time. The watch arrives in 18-karat ‘honey’ gold and has a diameter of 41.9mm. Only 100 will be produced. Par Excellence Your closest Glashütte Original boutique is now just a two-hour Eurostar journey away. October saw the German watchmaker open a new flagship store on Paris’s Rue de la Paix. Glashütte Original now operates 21 boutiques across the world, though, sadly, London still remains lacking. To mark the occasion, the brand bolstered its Senator Excellence line with the launch of the Panorama Date (steel £7,100, red gold £14,100) and the Panorama Date Moon Phase (steel £7,900, red gold £14,900). Both models are equipped with Glashütte’s Calibre 36, which provides a 100-hour power reserve from a single spring barrel. The impressive feat – typically power reserves of more than 48 hours require the use of more than one spring barrel – was achieved through compacting the case in which the movement’s silicon balance spring sits. The Panorama Date mounts two concentric display discs on the same level, eradicating the need for a separation bar in its date window; once properly set, the Panorama Date Moon Phase will need correcting just one day in every 122 years. Glashütte Original was founded in 1994, following the privatisation of Germany’s Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB), a collection of watch, clock and instrument companies that had been nationalised in 1951. Unlike Lange (see left) the brand says it presents watches with 25 in the date window purely for aesthetic reasons. glashuette-original.com CANARY WHARF | 31

Strictly Come Dancing The sizzling Spanish flamenco was the inspiration for Annoushka Ducas’ latest collection. The undulating folds of a fan have been captured in smoothly carved pink mother-of-pearl, which also references the soft, feminine ruffles of the dancers’ dresses. Connect Four Boucheron has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to mixing metals in fine jewellery, as illustrated by the Quatre collection. The bold yet strikingly simple four-stacked ring design has become a Boucheron signature and since its launch in 2004, has been reinterpreted around the four iconic motifs: the Double Godron, Ligne Diamants, Grosgrain and Clou de Paris. This year, the jeweller has deconstructed Quatre into the Grosgrain and Clou de Paris motifs, which can now be worn alone or together. The former’s ribbed, vertical lines reference Frederic Boucheron’s family of drapers, while the latter’s 3D design traces the cobblestones of the Place Vendôme – where Boucheron famously set up shop in 1893. Laurent Feniou, managing director of Cartier UK, looks back on this year’s brand highlights and speaks to oLIVIA SHARPE about Cartier’s exciting plans for 2017

2

016 has certainly been a busy year for Cartier. Kicking off in January at SIHH, the prestigious annual watch fair in Geneva, the French brand launched the men’s DRIVE de Cartier collection. Next came Magicien – a collection of one-off jewels first glimpsed this summer in the French Riviera and which have since been making their tour around the globe. This was followed by Cactus, Cartier’s cooler, more contemporary jewellery offering. And as the year closes, the jeweller plans to extend its signature Love range with new pieces in time for Christmas. The man behind the wheel of Cartier’s UK operations is Laurent Feniou. Formerly at Rothschild, he took over from executive chairman Arnaud Bamberger when he stepped down after 23 years at the helm. Moving from the corporate world to the luxury world of fine jewellery, watches and accessories might not seem the most obvious career step, but sitting opposite him in his office in London, I couldn’t imagine a man more suitable for the job. Feniou evidently hasn’t forgotten his former banking roots, being smartly suited up in formal business attire for our meeting, but one flash of the Frenchman’s own DRIVE watch tells me that he is Cartier through and through. Indeed, the French brand couldn’t have hoped for a better ambassador for its latest and most masculine model to date. Despite the sporty connotations, DRIVE hasn’t been designed for the action man, but rather for the modern day gentleman in need of a watch for all occasions.

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

“I believed from day one that DRIVE de Cartier would be a success in the UK market and it was,” he comments. “It’s very elegant, timeless and English. Men are becoming more educated about watches and they like to have a collection with different models depending on how they dress and what they do.” While not exactly a departure from Cartier’s collections to date, it is true that DRIVE is a new direction for the brand, having steered away from its traditionally unisex timepieces. As the managing director notes, the clean, crisp aesthetic of the Cartier Tank or the elegant curves of the Ballon Bleu sit well on both male and female wrists, but the DRIVE, with its strong lines, defined proportions and masculine guilloche dial, could only really work on a man. Cartier’s fresh take on its watch offering is hardly surprising given the house’s long-standing tradition of innovation. This summer saw the launch of Cactus de Cartier, a collection that immediately spiked the interest of press and clients alike because of its daring aesthetic. Drawing on one of the hottest trends of the season (cacti have been cropping up everywhere, from Paul Smith & Gufram’s psychedelic coat stand to Prada’s plant-based A/W16 collection),

the range is a far cry from Cartier’s more traditional blooms. Pieces are bold and sculptural, featuring spiky and curved shapes in vivid shades of green chrysoprase, emerald and warm yellow gold, capturing the arid desert landscape. “Cactus de Cartier is the great novelty of 2016,” confirms Feniou. Unlike classic collections such as the Paris Nouvelle Vague or the Juste un Clou – “the key pillars of Cartier”, according to Feniou – Cactus is not immediately identifiable as Cartier, presenting an edgier, more contemporary side to the jeweller with chunky cocktail rings, well-proportioned cuffs and statement earrings. The collection experiments with different and more unusual gemstones, mixing emeralds with chrysoprase, lapis lazuli and carnelian beads. Cartier has never been afraid to explore new ground when it comes to unusual stones. “In the past, we’ve worked with fossilised stones for instance, which aren’t as precious as diamonds, but are extremely rare,” argues Feniou. “So what we’re looking at is the rarity and the interest from a design perspective.” And if you know anything about Cartier’s history, you’ll know this isn’t the first time the jeweller has been avant-garde – the now iconic panther design caused quite a stir when it was first unleashed in 1914. “When you think about Cartier over the years and the many collections we’ve launched, you can see how we’re constantly trying to create something that’s daring and different,” he adds. Every year, Cartier unveils a new high jewellery offering and this year’s Magicien is arguably its most spellbinding to date. The collection aims

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

to highlight the magic of transforming a precious stone into a priceless piece of jewellery, an act performed by the dedicated team of craftsmen. Feniou explains how the design process always begins with the stone and in reverence to its skilled artisans – many of whom have been with the maison for years – they were each given the choice of which stone they’d like to work with. The next stage of the process involves the finished creations being presented in front of a committee to ensure that they reflect Cartier’s DNA. The managing director’s favourite piece is the Illumination bracelet, featuring brilliant-cut diamonds, carved rock crystal and one central 31.16-carat D IF emerald-cut diamond, which can be removed and transformed into a ring. “There are some pieces that one can imagine ending up in the Cartier Collection one day and this is it,” he says. “It’s a true masterpiece and requires the know-how of people who have been working as craftsmen for generations to create.” Feniou is well-placed to give advice on the best gifts for Christmas. For the Frenchman, who unsurprisingly has a taste for the finer things in life, you cannot go wrong with a bottle of Château Lafite or a holiday abroad. He has already gifted his two sons, aged 11 and 13, two Cartier watches each in the hope that they will continue to build their collections for years to come, and for his wife, a beautiful Ballon Bleu. While Feniou cannot predict which will be the most popular products for customers this Christmas, he notes that the internet is increasingly becoming an essential source of sales and is something the company is investing in for the future. “It is an extremely important element in the luxury world and it’s not just buying, it’s the whole experience. Before entering our boutique, clients spend lots of time on the website, educating themselves on products, style and price so that they come to the store fully prepared.”

“When you think about Cartier over the years, and the many collections we’ve launched, you can see how we’re constantly trying to create something that’s daring and different”

Plans for 2017 don’t suggest that Cartier is slowing down, as the director reveals that the team is currently in the midst of planning an exciting exhibition in London for mid-next year. And while he refuses to go into too much detail, he hints that it will be of international weight. “London is an extremely interesting, international hub. People from all over the world visit and live here so it will always remain a very important place for Cartier.” cartier.co.uk

rejoice with reiss The Reiss winter offerings are divided into several collections – and we want them all. While Portrait in Black is influenced by the theatrical works of the Bloomsbury artists, Devil in the City is more decadent: think intense colour (clementine, cobalt, slate and racing green) and intricate details. Self-taught designer Elie Saab is renowned for his jaw-dropping red carpet gowns. He talks to KATY PARKER about style inspirations, dressing A-listers and putting Lebanon on the fashion map

F

rom a very young age, I would spend my time watching people – the way they walk or dress. I wouldn’t see them as they were, but as they could be if they were dressed differently.” Elie Saab is reminiscing. And as he does so, it quickly becomes clear that here sits a man who was never in any doubt as to his calling in life. He continues: “I used to look at the world around me in a different way from other children. My perspective on women was different: I have always been surrounded by beautiful women who inspire me and I wanted to underline their personalities.” The oldest son of a wood merchant, the self-taught fashion designer is one of the most illustrious talents to come out of Lebanon – famously becoming the first Lebanese designer to dress an Oscar winner in 2002, when Halle Berry wore a burgundy Saab gown to collect her Academy Award for Best Actress. Raised in Beirut, the story goes that Saab started sewing as a child, and at the age of eight had already turned his attention to fashion and design. His tools were anything that came to hand; he raided his mother’s closet for lace, cut patterns out of newspaper and used his sister as a model. The preparation paid off. In 1981 Saab moved to Paris to study fashion, before later returning to his hometown to launch his eponymous label a year later when he was just 18 years old. Saab says of this time, “I was only a teenager when I began my career, but I knew where I was headed. Working in

fashion was more my destiny than anything else.” Women the world over owe much to the young Saab’s steadfastness; his exquisite designs have been seen on numerous brides, royal family members – Queen Rania of Jordan wore a Saab dress for her enthronement in 1999 – Oscarnominated actresses and Grammy award-winning singers. Scroll through a ‘Best Dressed’ image gallery for any star-studded event and you will be greeted by a dazzling array of glamorous figures wearing Saab designs. I ask the designer if it was always his desire to carve out a niche in the creation of show-stopping eveningwear. “I started my business more than 30 years ago by creating evening gowns and wedding dresses because that was what I wanted to do and what inspired me. I always found that my inspiration was limitless when creating haute couture.” Dressing celebrities, Saab says, brings him immense pride, but it isn’t without its difficulties: “It is a risk – actresses are scrutinised in every way imaginable – but I take the risk with them happily, willingly.” While nowadays he is in demand by the likes of Rihanna, Helen Mirren, and everyone in between, it took time – almost 20 years in fact – for Hollywood to sit up and pay attention to the dressmaker from Beirut. In an industry dominated by French and Italian designers, Saab was something of a pioneer, as he explains: “The industry was non-existent in the region when I started as a teenager, so I am proud of having created a profession that didn’t exist in my country before.” Saab’s original clients were the well-heeled women of Beirut,

who were drawn to the designer’s feminine yet structured silhouettes, his delicate attention to detail, and the use of rich fabrics, lace, detailed embroidery, pearls, crystals and silk threads. Today, his fans are drawn to much the same aspects, but it is his unique fusion of Western and Eastern cultures that really sets him apart. He describes how much he is inspired by the Middle East – its “culture and richness” – while “living in Beirut has been a great source of creativity”. Particularly “in terms of the luxurious fabrics and intricate embroideries that I choose.” Saab’s S/S17 collection, however, displayed a lighter, more playful side to the designer. Showcased in Paris, Saab tells me the collection was inspired by ’70s disco and the golden era of Studio 54 “in an effusive mix of pattern, colour, texture and tailoring of bold sensuality”. Heralding a new era of “easy glamour”, the collection was a triumphant blend of “the lightness of summer and the extravagance of eveningwear”.

It’s been a busy year for Saab, who alongside the seasonal shows, has announced a return to bridal wear and unveiled a new fourstorey flagship store in London, with another to come on New York’s Madison Avenue. Upon a recent visit to the store, I notice the obvious emphasis on customer experience: the need for shoppers to take their time, to feel the fabrics, to immerse themselves in the splendour of couture. With this in mind, I wonder how Saab views the world of online, and whether he thinks digital has a place in the rarified world of luxury fashion. He seems wary: “I appreciate the role online has played in globalisation, however, the digital sphere is a double-edged weapon, which can have a positive or negative impact on the brand. Therefore, for me, it’s important to stay true to the brand DNA – at the same time as maintaining a common ground between the online and offline portrayal of the Elie Saab universe.” Elie Saab Resort 2017 Collection

And what of Saab’s personal universe – does he ever find a moment time to relax? “My day revolves around my work, but when I find the time, I visit art galleries and exhibitions that might be a source of inspiration for a future collection. I try to relax in the evenings by spending time with my family and friends.” For Saab, the focus for the future is maintaining the quality that the brand is renowned for. He assures me that, while it is expanding – an eyewear line launches in January – it will never be mainstream. “It should, and always will, remain high-end and highly desirable.” Well, Mr Saab, you had me at hello. eliesaab.com

But we have brought the company back to white and neutrals. As you grow and develop a business you make lots of little mistakes along the way. Davies began working on eyewear in 1996, and 20 years on, he’s creating glasses for both fashion and function using innovative design with an edge, all while maintaining a level of classic elegance. The limited-edition London collection is a modern take on the classic aviator shape that we all know and love. Using pure titanium with cotton acetate, these frames have high-quality solar lenses and come in a huge variety of colours depending on your taste. From timeless matt black with redwood tips to a more eccentric pair in matt electric green with green mirrored lenses, you’ll be sure to find something to match your disposition. “The concept for this collection with its highquality titanium detailing was born out of a recent bespoke design consultation I did for a movie coming out in 2017. They were so well received; I felt it had to become a limited-edition range of sunglasses,” Davies says of the London range. The Rockstar collection was born out of a frame originally designed for a member of the band Muse

s l u x u ry l on d on . co . u k s

– hence the name. It’s a 12-piece collection in bold colours – perhaps a style for the more daring of you. “Experimenting with Natural Horn has become a hobby of mine,” Davies tells me, a material that forms the basis of the nine pieces in the new Richmond collection. “My previous horn collections were all about impact, especially the more masculine shapes – this collection features a 7mm rounded temple arm and rounded rims.” A sophisticated take on this frame, the glasses are hand polished, too. “This collection is perfect for those who want to wear a really elegant frame but whose personality and lifestyle suits something modern,” he continues. Davies’ favourite range is Silver 925 and says it’s “one of the best sunglass collections I have designed.” Coming from the man himself, they’ve got to be good. Handmade sterling silver frames with platinum 950 mirrored lenses, 18-carat gold coated mirrored lenses or other coloured mirrors – this nine-piece collection is the show-stopper on the shelves. For something bold, feminine and fun, there’s the Love collection – quirky heart-shaped glasses, which were born out of a frame designed for a well-known make-up artist. As always, Tom Davies offers customers a bespoke service for all his designs, sunglasses and glasses, too. It starts with a consultation asking the client questions such as ‘what do they do professionally?’, and ‘What kind of lifestyle do they lead?’. Each and every time, Tom Davies can create the perfect pair. All collections available in ready-to-wear or bespoke from its Bespoke Optician. Tom Davies, Cabot Place

tHE NEw GIRL

IN TOWN Model and musician Karen Elson talks favourite perfumes, fragrance memories and scents to perform in, as she becomes the latest face of Jo Malone London WORDS: katy parker

J

o Malone London is a quintessential British brand, so it makes sense that its ambassadors represent the best of British. Joining Poppy Delevingne as the newest Jo Malone London Girl, Karen Elson is known for her individual, quirky sense of style and distinctive sound. Despite splitting her time between New York and Nashville, she is Manchester-born, and says the Jo Malone London fragrances make her pleasantly nostalgic. What drew you to working with Jo Malone London? I’ve been a fan of Jo Malone London for well over a decade, and I love all the fragrances so much. I jumped at the chance to work with the brand – I am an admitted scent hoarder! What is your first memory of fragrance? As a child, I would go to my grandmother’s house and sneak into her bathroom and spray her perfume all over. Fragrance always held that allure for me – something secret and grown-up and comforting. Can you remember when and how you first discovered Jo Malone London and what you liked about it? I was staying at a hotel in Beverly Hills for work, and a friend sent over a hamper of Jo Malone London to my room. I was hooked from the start. The packaging was so elegant,

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

simple and chic. And then the scents! To die for. Do you have a favourite Jo Malone London scent? If I had to pick a favourite, I would probably say Wild Bluebell. It’s heavenly and it reminds me of springtime in England. Red Roses is another classic scent that’s just so good. It’s the perfect rose scent – just divine. Do you ever combine your scents? If so, what is your favourite combination? I do like to play with fragrance. My favourite way to combine is to use a body crème in one scent and then layer a different cologne on top. I love to use the Wood Sage & Sea Salt Body Crème, then spritz Blackberry & Bay Cologne – heaven.

feature

Can you describe your personal style in three words? Elegant, whimsical and practical – because I’m a mum. What scents do you use in your home? For home fragrance, I’m obsessed with the Green Tomato Leaf Home Candle. It’s especially great for the kitchen – it smells really clean and fresh. If I’m entertaining in the evening, I like to light some scented candles – I tend to change the scent depending on the time of year – about an hour before my guests are due to arrive.

What is your bathtime ritual? To relax, nothing beats a long, deep bath using the Red Roses Bath Oil. It feels like a really special treat, especially after a long flight. What’s on your Christmas wish list, either for yourself, or for those closest to you? World Peace. Failing that, just quality time spent with my family and friends. The gents on my Christmas list might be lucky enough to receive the Black Cedarwood & Juniper Cologne this year. Although I would absolutely wear it myself, it has an earthy, masculine scent that on a man would smell simply ravishing. Jo Malone London, Jubilee Place

Do you wear a particular type of scent when you’re performing? When I’m on stage, I love to wear Velvet Rose & Oud. It’s got a sensual, sultry feel to it. I also usually wear the Dry Body Oil. The scent lingers beautifully on the skin, without overwhelming.   Are there any scents that remind you of home, or take you back to your English roots? Wood Sage & Sea Salt reminds me of the English seaside – rocky and bracing. And of course all the rose-based scents feel like home. There’s nothing more English than a rose, and I like to think I’m a bit of an English Rose.

Founders of Scandinavian-inspired British lifestyle brand Lilou et Loïc, Aldis Firman and Malin Wright, discuss their love of home, design and fragrance WORDS: olivia sharpe

I

have serious home envy. It’s 10am and I’ve just arrived at the house of Aldis Firman, one of the founders of lifestyle brand Lilou et Loïc, located minutes from Barons Court station. The open-plan kitchen and dining area is as attractive and welcoming as its owner. The dark wooden dining table, sourced from Milan, and accompanying Ralph Lauren chairs perfectly complement the white Statuario marble kitchen countertops. I take mental notes of the exquisite Art Deco-inspired chandelier and the floor-toceiling mirror. If it hadn’t been for the high chair placed discreetly round the breakfast nook, I would never have guessed this meticulous residence was a family home. Aldis lives here with her husband, racing car driver Ralph Firman, and their two small children. The pair did up the property completely from scratch, although she tells me, smiling, that her husband had very little involvement in the design. The Icelandic businesswoman has had several homes in London, which have all been minimalistic in style up until recently. “My first home used to be completely Scandi. You’d walk in and you knew a Nordic person lived there.” However, her style has evolved over the years and her latest home has traces of her brief sojourn in the States when she was a child and her travels to Japan. “Essentially it’s a Scandinavian

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

home, but with touches of contemporary and classic.” And this is the perfect way to sum up her lifestyle brand Lilou et Loïc, which specialises in home fragrance, bath and body products, and fragrance, which she founded together with close friend, Malin Wright, in 2011. The former Swedish model – who arrives impeccably dressed in a cream poloneck and leather trousers – used to live in Fulham, but has since moved to the country with her husband and three children. The blonde beauties first met ten years ago in London where they worked for the same company. “I think it’s our Nordic mentality, but we had an instant connection,” says Aldis. The pair then reconvened in France, where Malin had been spending the majority of her time, and bonded over their love of fragrance. “We spend summers in our house in Grasse and it is amazing the scents you discover there,” explains Malin. “The jasmine, rose, violet and orange blossom, all of which can be found in our bestselling White Cashmere fragrance, originate from here.” Without further ado, the two set about creating their first product line, which developed organically thanks to a strong shared vision. Drawing on their personal tastes, the simple, monochrome packaging (designed by Malin) and the luxurious handmade, reusable glass bottles, very much reflect their Scandinavian sensibility, while the products themselves have all been made in England, marking

feature

Lilou et Loïc out as a British brand. So engrossed were they in creating the products that it wasn’t until much later that they realised they needed a name for their concept. However, like everything else, this proved easy. “Funnily enough the name is just perfect and once we identified it we knew it couldn’t be anything else,” says Malin, smiling. “It came from my daughter’s nickname, Lilou, and her imaginary friend, Loïc, who used to accompany us when we were in France. We then decided to add wings to illustrate her guardian angel.” All of the brand’s heavenly fragrances are inspired by Aldis’s and Malin’s travels. One fragrance that particularly resonates with Aldis is the Oriental Sandalwood & Black Pepper, which takes her back to her time in Japan. “I’ve been all over and one thing that travelled with me

throughout, whether it was Nagasaki in the south or Sapporo in the north, was sandalwood. It retains its scent in the wood for centuries and it’s one of the most common incenses used for religious ceremonies.” While Aldis tends to lean towards the slightly sweeter scents, Malin prefers the traditionally more masculine fragrances. “I love Black Amber & Saffron,” she says. “It’s very sophisticated and I like the fact that it goes through all of our collections.” All of the fragrances in the Lilou et Loïc range are unisex as the founders are keen to break down gender barriers. This once again highlights their Scandinavian roots, a region famed for being one of the most gender equal in the world. “Many women don’t want a typically feminine scent,” explains Malin. “We believe people should be able to express their personality and fragrance choices freely.” Aldis confirms that their male to female client ratio is 50/50, particularly when it comes to their Essentials range, launched earlier this year. The pair also hopes to roll out their bespoke offering to companies next year, having recently been commissioned by a member of the royal family. One thing that unifies the brand is the two founders’ love of design and the home. As Aldis puts it, “Home is where you can really be creative and express yourself.” As we enter one of the most family-orientated times of the year, I ask the two women how they will each be spending Christmas. While Aldis is taking her whole family to Iceland for a Nordic affair, Malin is staying in the UK, where they will celebrate in both Scandi and British style. We wouldn’t expect anything less. lilouetloic.com

top gear It would be remiss not to flag up the release of Samsung’s two exciting smart watch models: the Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic. Innovation is the watchword (excuse the pun), when it comes to the Gear S3: unique traits include wireless charging, contactless payment and a built-in speaker that enables hands-free calls and music. It may not look like a sports watch – aesthetically it favours a more traditional design – but the Gear S3 models have a host of features dedicated to fitness and sport. Sitting down:

the reality A sedentary lifestyle is responsible for many health problems today. But with office jobs requiring long desk-bound hours, how can we work hard without suffering the associated negative health effects? WORDS: charlotte phillips

V

ictoria Beckham was wearing Hervé Léger before we’d heard of bodycon, and had the Pob when long tresses were in vogue – so photographs of her at a ‘treadmill desk’, walking as she worked, should send a clear message: sitting is out. Or, at least, it should be, given the myriad health problems that sitting for eight hours a day, as many of us do, can lead to. Ben Lewis is a personal trainer at Canary Wharf’s Third Space. “Ultimately, sitting down all day is a problem. Posture-wise, it can lead to a rounded back, a protruding neck and a core that’s not activated.” Jason Patel, clinical director and osteopath at Canary Wharf’s Freedom Clinics, agrees. His patients experience “facet joint pain, joint degeneration, disc bulges and degeneration, trapped and compressed nerves and increased spinal curve development”. As for Lewis’ osteopath colleague Henry Howe: “80 per cent of us will get spinal pain at some point, and there’s not one part of the bodily system that doesn’t suffer from sitting down all day. Your immune system, cardiovascular system, hormones… they’re all impeded by a sedentary lifestyle.” It’s even affecting how we process food, he says. “Studies show that inflammatory markers in the blood rise when we sit

down directly after eating, and we should stand up for 20 minutes after lunch to prevent this.” Dr Luke Powles, GP at Bupa Crossrail Place, has even worse news. “Being sedentary increases the likelihood of weight gain, diabetes and cardiovascular issues such as heart disease and strokes.” There’s also the mental health aspect. “The body is an inflammatory environment and when high stress hormones have no release, it can lead to anxiety and depression,” says Howe. Almost 31 million sick days were lost in 2013 due to back, neck and muscle problems, says the ONS, and the Work Foundation estimates that bone and joint pains cost the EU’s economies €240bn (£200bn) annually. The World Health Organization (who. int) has cited physical inactivity as the fourth biggest killer on the planet – perhaps it’s no surprise that sitting down all day has been dubbed the new smoking. Rectifying this is multipronged. First, posture is key. Tishani Sitters is an osteopath at Freedom Clinics. Clients typically visit her four times, she tells me, and at the end, she sends them off with instructions on how to make their workplace ergonomically optimised, which involves “a supportive chair and the keyboard and screen a certain distance away”. Powles at Bupa agrees, adding, “You could also consider an adjustable standing desk.” Workplace aligned, next up is exercise, which can help counter the effects of sitting down – but approach with caution. “You can’t go from sitting

feature

down all day to straight into the gym,” says Lewis. Third Space has a serious induction procedure, watching you perform simple moves to assess a starting point before focusing on goals. Do the induction, says Lewis. Otherwise, “You won’t know what you’re doing and could be working the same muscles that are already tight.” After sitting down for a long time, you want to do things like extensions, he says, “to open everything up”. Patel has seen the ramifications of poor training. “A lot of our patients have sports injuries. They spend 40-80 hours at their desk, and then train hard in the gym and run marathons. It’s going from one end of the spectrum to the other.” To help, Freedom Clinics offer free 15-minute consultations and extensive pain treatments: “Anything from soft tissue work, articulations, and trigger point therapy to working joints, stretching, dry needling and laser,” says Sitters. The good news: to negate the problem we don’t necessarily need to spend hours pumping iron. Lowresistance exercise such as yoga is very beneficial for mental clarity,

as well as helping with breathing, posture and stretching. Better still, effects of sitting down can be partially negated by small amounts of moving around throughout the day, says Powles. “Stand up and walk around your office floor, make a cup of tea or visit the printer. Get off the bus early to walk the last ten minutes to work or home.” Lewis agrees: “Movement and regular breaks are really important. It’s not always realistic to take a half hour break, but traders can stand up while they make phone calls and deals.” Our generation is more sedentary than previous ones, with the reduced need for manual work and the rise of computers and TV. So, is sitting the new smoking? It’s a bold claim, but, says Howe, “If we could reverse the sedentary culture, it would have a bigger impact than if everyone stopped smoking.” While we can’t stop working, we can stretch, stand and exercise to counter the effects as much as possible. See you at yoga. Freedom Clinics, North Colonnade; Bupa, Crossrail Place; Third Space, Canada Square; msk-osteo.co.uk; ons.gov.uk; theworkfoundation.com

Delight on the Wharf Tom’s Kitchen Canary Wharf offers so much more than British comfort food classics, as WILLIAM MONROE discovers

M

y friend and I arrived at the Canary Wharf branch of Tom’s Kitchen on a chilly Friday evening to be greeted by the light murmur of patrons unwinding after a long week at work. Candlelit tables, soft lighting, wood-panelled floors and comfy padded benches mean it’s a relaxed but elegant setting for an evening meal. One thing that stands out at Tom’s Kitchen is the attentive customer service; our coats were taken on arrival and water glasses filled immediately. The old adage of service with a smile comes to mind, but at Tom’s the staff cultivate a refreshing brand of pleasant and efficient informality that avoids pretension – spot on. We tucked into Nocellara olives and a crisp Pinot Grigio, before getting down to business and deciding on our starters. My friend opted for the macaroni cheese with truffles – I pilfered a forkful and it was excellent – while my pan-fried scallops were soft, tender, and went well with a pine nut risotto and black pudding. So far so good. I’m notoriously indecisive when it © David Griffen Photography

comes to ordering, and it’s fair to say the tantalising mains offerings did little to ease the hesitancy: would it be the

It was excellent, full of flavour and delightfully rare, as venison should be smoked salmon niçoise salad, or rabbit leg with squid, chorizo and mashed potato? In the end I ordered the venison with red wine poached pears, braised leg croquette and beetroot gratin. It was

excellent, full of flavour and delightfully rare, as venison should be. I’m often wary of beetroot, but in this case it combined well with the gamey croquette and poached pears to provide a real smorgasbord of flavours. On to dessert, an aspect of any meal that I usually approach with a degree of trepidation as a non-pudding fan: “You don’t like dessert?” and a goggling stare are what usually greet me when I confess that it just doesn’t do it for me. This time, however, I decided to brace myself and go for the apple and vanilla panna cotta with caramel parfait. Now this dessert I could handle – it was light, not too filling, and the vanilla and apple flavours combined well together. Upon learning that my friend was heading for the bright lights (well, bars) of Soho after dinner, two espresso martinis appeared – and were drunk – in quick succession, a thoughtful touch from our attentive and quirky waiter. Tom’s Kitchen has built a name for itself offering good, traditional British food. Indeed, its own website declares that British favourites and comfort food classics are at the heart of what’s on offer at the Canary Wharf branch. You can’t help but think, however, that this does a slight disservice to the reality of the undeniably excellent fare on offer. Tom’s Kitchen, Westferry Circus, tomskitchen.co.uk

rosÉ a winter

We meet Régis Camus, the man behind Piper-Heidsieck’s prestige cuvée rosé, to discover why we’re getting it all wrong when it comes to storing (and drinking) Champagne WORDS: william monroe

T

he Piper-Heidsieck story began in 1785 in a fairytale-like manner, when Florens-Louis Heidsieck of Reims fell in love with a girl from Champagne. Driven by a yearning ambition, the winemaker resolved to make a cuvée worthy of a queen, a feat he achieved three years later when he presented one of his creations to Marie-Antoinette. The Rare Rosé Millésime 2007 – the house of Piper-Heidsieck’s first-ever prestige cuvée rosé – is inspired by no such high-flown romantic notions, but similar devotion has certainly been lavished on its creation, resulting in an excellent and noteworthy Champagne, the latest creation from Régis Camus, chef de caves of one of France’s oldest Champagne houses. A blend of 17 grape varieties, the cuvée rosé is a marriage of Chardonnay and Pinot noir wines, which have been left to mature for more than eight years. The Champagne, which is presented in a special box made of lacquered black wood and rose gold metal, is golden pink in colour and incorporates notes of lychee and herbs, followed by cherry, wild strawberries and a final aroma of smoked tea. On the palate the texture is light, with the taste of red fruit blossoms merging into notes of vanilla, passion fruit and a hint of paprika. Camus – who has been crowned Sparkling Winemaker of the Year by the International Wine Challenge a record eight times – attributes both his enduring success and his creation to the PiperHeidsieck team. “The secret is the teamwork, the passion and rigour. All the wines are good, and the quality is increasing year after year. You can’t become chef de caves just like that, you have to be part of a team.”

As a wine connoisseur who’s passionate about his trade, Camus is also keen to proffer advice on how to store and serve Champagne so as to enhance its flavour. His first tip: keep bottles away from light. “Secondly, keep bottles in a place where the temperature is constant. A cellar coming from -5°C in the winter going up to 20°C in the summer is not a good place to keep Champagne. When it’s hot, serve Champagne at 6°C to 8°C; at a regular temperature, serve at 8°C to 10°C.” He explains further, “You can easily take a wine glass instead of the classic flute. You need a bit more space to have all the aromas coming through.” When it comes to quality control, Camus is accustomed to taking a hands-on approach in the form of daily trips to the tasting room, which he refers to as the “little world of the wine-making team”. Phones are switched off and the wine takes precedence: “We are just thinking about wine, nothing more than wine.” The future of Piper-Heidsieck is in the safe hands of Camus’s deputy, Séverine Frerson-Gomez, who was born and raised in Champagne and will one day take up the mantle of chef de caves. For the present, however, the Rare Rosé Millésime 2007 – of which just 150 bottles are available in the UK – looks to be one of the finest high-end Champagnes Piper-Heidsieck has ever produced: a rare vintage indeed. £325, available from Harrods, harrods.com; rare-rose-experience.com

Slip, slidin’ away We don’t get too much opportunity to drive on ice in this country, which is why the Bentley Power on Ice programme takes place on a frozen lake near the Arctic Circle in northern Finland. Held every January and February, the Bentley programme is devised by rally superstar Juha Kankkunen and, well, there’s nothing quite like it. Bespoke circuits are dug out of the ice to give drivers a unique opportunity to power drift a Bentley Continental GT or a potent GT3-R. There’s also the chance to sample the new Bentayga SUV in its ideal hunting ground. The trip includes two full days of driving on ice

with individual coaching to gradually build up skills and introduce advanced techniques so that a little dusting of snow in the UK will hold no fear. It’s not just cars, either. The four-day itinerary includes snowmobile rides, dog sled hikes, icekarting, a traditional Finnish cave smoke sauna and first-class accommodation with the choice between a boutique hotel, deluxe apartments or traditional Scandinavian-style private cottages. Prices start at £12,500 with flights from Birmingham. Best of all, you don’t have to be a Bentley owner to take part. Just remember the thermals. events.bentleymotors.com, 01675 445 945

There’ll be Spitfires over the White Cliffs of Dover Pleasure flights are two-a-penny these days and often offer the chance to fly in something unusual. But Aero Legends beats the lot with its Battle of Britain Ultimate Package. Based at Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent (previously known as RAF Lashenden), Aero Legends offers a unique chance to sample life as it was for young RAF pilots during World War II. The Ultimate Package starts with a full briefing before a 45-minute flight in an open cockpit Tiger Moth bi-plane, the aircraft used for pilot training in those dark days of the war. Next comes a 45-minute flight in a Harvard, a more modern closed cockpit American warbird that was also used as a trainer. Finally comes the big one, a 40-minute flight over the White Cliffs in a genuine World War II Supermarine Spitfire. Aero Legends has three of these famous aircraft – one of which is a Spitfire T9 two-seater. It was built in 1944 and started life as a single-seat fighter before being converted into trainer configuration in 1950 for the Irish Air Corps. Neglected in the 1960s and 1970s, it was eventually restored as a two-seater and made its first post-restoration flight in 1990. The Aero Legends package includes a full safety briefing, use of the flight suit and boots, and you’ll get an HD cockpit video of your flight at the end of the day for an all-in cost of £5,395. aerolegends.co.uk

Mud, mud, glorious mud Land Rover spends a small fortune developing the most advanced fourwheel drive chassis in the business, yet the closest most of their vehicles get to going off road is when they mount the pavement to park. Sign up for a Land Rover Experience, though, and you’ll be amazed at just what they can do. A typical Experience is based around a tricky offroad course with plenty of obstacles – some natural, some man-made – designed to give the Landie a hard time. Advanced electronic aids will allow the cars to climb steep and slippery inclines, and trained instructors will show how to navigate steep inclines and side slopes. Participants also learn to handle low traction surfaces, how to crawl over rocks, what wheel articulation means and how to differentiate safe from unsafe terrain. Best of all, anyone taking the Advanced Day Experience (£650 for sole occupancy) will get to wade a Defender through deep gloopy muddy water. There are three Experiences (half-day, day and advanced), with prices starting at £225 per driver or £450 if you want to go solo. The nearest centre to London is at Luton. landrover.co.uk

Take a grand holiday Watching F1 on television is all very well. You can put your feet up, enjoy a beer or two and listen to expert analysis from the likes of Martin Brundle or David Coulthard. But there’s nothing that beats actually being there. Only by watching the cars live will you appreciate how fast they are, how quickly they change direction and how, well, violent things can be if they go wrong. The atmosphere on race day, any race day, is infectious. You could do worse than head to Silverstone in July for the British Grand Prix, but where’s the adventure in that? No, best to try an overseas race and do it in style. You could rub shoulders with Monaco’s glitterati, play Russian roulette in Sochi or head for the Singapore nightlife. Or you could head west and take in the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, due to take place in late October next year. The Circuit of the Americas is a new, technically interesting track with plenty of overtaking opportunities and usually throws up a great race. For the best tickets at the circuit you’ll need to be part of the F1 Paddock Club, and you’ll need to budget around $5,400 (approx. £4,343) for a three-day Paddock Club hospitality package plus flights and hotels. Not cheap but the real deal. tickets.formula1.com

Take to the tracks You can go to virtually any race circuit in the land and buy a few hot laps in a supercar… Silverstone, Goodwood, Brands Hatch, you name it. Thruxton Circuit near Andover in Hampshire – a former World War II airfield and one of the country’s fastest circuits – is a little different. Yes, you can thrash a fast road car around the track, but you can also do a lot better than that. Thruxton has what it calls the Ultimate Super Driving Experience, an intense four-and-a-half hours of high-speed lappery in not just one supercar, not just two… but a whole host of them.

For 2017, the Experience will start with a full briefing before you take to the track – with expert guidance from fully qualified race instructors in the passenger seat – in a wide range of cars including the Porsche Cayman, Aston V8 Vantage N430, Ferrari 458 Spider, Lamborghini Huracan, McLaren 570S and a Formula Renault single-seater. Then, just as they think they’re getting the hang of this track driving lark, they’ll be given some high-speed passenger laps in a Peugeot Spider Cup car with a threelap ride alongside TV star and racer Tiff Needell, who will spend most of the time going sideways in a BMW M4. Helmets, race boots and gloves are all provided, and the entire experience costs a highly reasonable £999. thruxtonracing.co.uk, 01264 882 222

t takes more than getting on a plane to relax and unwind. And, unfortunately, sometimes it takes more than spending a sizeable chunk of your annual salary on a summer break to guarantee quality. In this business, we see luxury hotels with various bells and whistles – disco balls in the bedrooms, the largest pearl in the world casually set into the wall (Abu Dhabi) and a dedicated team whose entire job it is to polish gold surfaces (again, Abu Dhabi). But there are ones that stand out; ones that I would go back to even if I wasn’t ‘working’. Emirates One & Only Wolgan Valley is one of them. Set on Australia’s Great Dividing Range, about three hours’ drive from Sydney, the 7,000-acre nature reserve includes rolling flats, creeks and sandstone cliffs that glow rust red in the sun. The resort itself occupies around one per cent of the land, fronted by a

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

main homestead with verandas overlooking the mountains, crackling fires for the cooler climate and an emphasis on local produce served in the Wolgan Dining Room. All guests are accommodated in freestanding villas with private indoor pools and terraces. Decor is similarly homely but luxe – expect walk-in wardrobes, fourposter beds, stone hearths and lounge rooms for unwinding after hours of exploring. It’s romantic and indulgent (rates start at AUS$2,300 per night), but excursions keep things energetic. With phone signal unavailable this far out, there’s no excuse not to disconnect from city life and make the most of the surroundings. This being their natural habitat, you’ll stumble across wallabies, wombats and kangaroos on your way to the main house,

TRAVEL One & Only Wolgan Valley

particularly at dusk. But the best way to see the land and learn about its Aboriginal history is to take a trail ride on horseback from the stables with a guide. The horses know the routes well, and the leisurely stroll is easy for beginners. On my trail, there were just two of us, amping up the sense of escaping it all. We saw handfuls of roos and wallaroos bounding across the hills, as well as traditional markers of the land used by the first tribes. Another of the most popular expeditions is a Guided Glow Worm Walk, which takes place in the tunnels of the Newnes Plateau and entails a hike through twisted rock formations and streams to see the fluorescent lava of its native insects. By night, a rustic stargazing and campfire experience is available, complete with fine food, private campfires, telescopes and guided talks of

astronomy and Antipodean folklore. Don’t let anyone tell you that Australia is devoid of depth or culture. This is a place where you’ll rethink your priorities in an instant. For lazy afternoons, the resort has an impressive spa. The outdoor pool alone is worth ten social media posts: chic and contemporary, it’s juxtaposed against a backdrop of copper-coloured ridges and wild scrubland. Inside, it again takes the form of a beautiful country house – one that’s flooded with sunlight from floor-to-ceiling windows that also make the most of the view, and styled with lots of natural stone, with the emphasis on relaxation. All treatments are designed using Australian skincare brand Sodashi and essential oils, and options include Mountain Aromatherapy massages that tease stress out of the muscles from top to toe.

Keen to twin its other international resorts, One & Only recommend teaming a stay at Emirates One & Only Wolgan Valley with time at its ocean resort, One & Only Hayman Island – travelling from bush to beach. Around two-anda-half hours from Sydney Kingsford Smith airport, the 74 Whitsunday Islands are in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, making them ideal for bucketlist divers. Hayman Island is one of the only inhabited islands and is a draw for both families and honeymooners.

There are various styles of accommodation at the hotel, and my tip is to book a Pool Access suite, which is flooded with light and includes a tented bed, access to the outside via two sets of double doors, and both a sitting and dining area – all styled in cream and white. The hotel itself is slightly more laid-back than the other properties under the One & Only umbrella, which will suit those who prefer a fuss-free break that feels beachy rather than sophisticated. That said, its amenities are excellent, including its Pan-Asian restaurant Bamboo, which combines Chinese, Korean and Thai influences across dishes including Glacier 51 toothfish with a mushroom and ginger sauce – a light, well-balanced and tangy main – and sweet and sour pork with peppers, onion and seasonal fruit. The latter is a particularly juicy and rich version of a classic. If seafood is your thing, book a private cabana on the beachfront to feast on platters of local king prawns, oysters and sashimi that arrive in enormous ice boats accompanied by Champagne. The doors that open out onto the sand can be left open, while inside the romantic hideaway is covered in candles: for special occasions you can also ask for tables to be set in the open air too. Water sports and diving are big business here, and one of the biggest buzzes in the resort comes from talk of using a scuba doo – a hand-held motorised buoy that enables divers to roll and bob beneath the surface of the water as it propels them along. A regular spot for diving and snorkelling is Blue Pearl Bay, which also has training areas for beginners, and providing you’re diving in peak season when the visibility is good, there is a range of multi-coloured coral to see on the inner reef, as well as small barracuda, bumphead parrot fish and turtles that call its waters home. Back on dry land, the nightly hike to the top of the island’s peak to see the sunset is always popular. It’s punctuated by appearances from the local wildlife: the island is very much its own habitat, with koalas, 100 cockatoos and two white swans (of only six in Australia) among its resident species, and in October and November you can also take part in a ‘butterfly walk’. The sunset peak hike is energetic and steeper than you’d expect. But it’s precisely the ability

of the trip to offer the spirit of adventure that keeps mind and body occupied. And perhaps counterintuitively, that means it promises ultimate relaxation. A twin-share Heritage villa at Emirates One & Only Wolgan Valley, including daily breakfast, lunch and dinner, with two activities per day, from AUS$2,300 (approx. £1,431) per night; A twin-share Lagoon room at One & Only Hayman Island with breakfast, from AUS$845 (approx. £526) per night; oneandonlyresorts.com

Le Chalet Zannier

E

ver since the 1920s, when the Rothschilds declared Megève an alternative to St Moritz, this snow globe village has attracted well-heeled travellers in search of sunshine, snow and luxury digs. Just an hour from Geneva, it’s one of the lower-lying resorts in the Haute-Savoie and the season is a short one, just four months. Visit in December and there might not be much snow to speak of, but come January, Megève springs to glittering life with 400km of pine-clad pistes overlooking Mont Blanc, perfect for beginners and intermediate skiers. Those with an appetite for powder will be glad to hear that Megève is now part of the ‘Mont Blanc Unlimited Pass’ encompassing three countries and 998km of ski runs including Chamonix, Courmayer and Verbier. Beyond its snowy virtues, Megève is special in many other ways. Visited predominantly by French and British travellers, it still remains untouched by the new-money-wielding hordes other resorts have fallen victim to. You’ll find no noisy nightclubs or fur-clad fashionistas demanding magnums of Cristal. Megève is a refined, relaxed resort, and within it, there’s no better example of good taste than Le Chalet Zannier. This rustic-chic boutique hotel opened its doors five years ago and continues to be Megève’s most exclusive mountain retreat. A word-of-mouth kind of place, it has 12 rooms split between two charming stone farmhouses. Rooms are stripped-back, featuring little more than wood, stone and organic linens. There are nods to traditional alpine design and objets d’art picked up by owner Arnaud Zannier (a fashion

entrepreneur turned hotelier) on his travels, but mainly what you see is wood – smooth wood, aged wood, rough-hewn wood – providing a deeply warm and elemental experience. Tremendously tactile from ceiling to floor, tweed Uggs commissioned especially for Le Chalet Zannier are provided for every guest, and one of the hotel’s stand-out suites features a dramatic wall of jagged exposed rock. Dinner is at La Ferme de Mon Père, housed in the main chalet, and can be a rowdy affair due to the restaurant’s popularity with the locals. French chef Julien Burlat – a childhood friend of Zannier – has a growing following for his ability to put together wonderfully artistic yet generous portions of modern French fare (liquorice-flavoured frog legs, crispy slowcooked suckling pig breast, and crispy sweetbreads with salsify and truffle jus are a few of the highlights). Ultimately, service is where Le Chalet Zannier excels, so expect to be thoroughly spoiled throughout your stay. Staff in skinny grey jeans are on hand to arrange everything from getting your ski boots fitted (in Le Chalet’s hut-like boot room) to confirming a massage in its bijou spa. There are 40 members of staff – by far the highest staff/guest ratio in these parts, and when you need a lift into town, drivers are available from dawn until dusk to chauffeur you around. Action-wise, it’s all there for the taking: husky rides, snowshoe treks, paragliding, ice-skating, snow polo… You can even book a heli-skiing expedition to Italy or Switzerland should you have the urge. But best of all is the sense of exclusivity you get from hiding

out behind Chalet Zannier’s heavy wooden doors. Whispers of Angelina Jolie were circulating during our visit in February, but it turned out the actress was actually staying in one of Arnaud Zannier’s other hotels – an eco-lodge in Cambodia – filming a yet-to-be-released biopic. A far cry from Hollywood, Megève’s sleepy town centre is a car-free zone. Aside from the clatter of ski boots on cobbles and the gentle whir of chair lifts making their mountain ascent, there is little to disturb the tranquility. Pretty streets lined with pâtisseries, charcuteries and skiwear shops are dotted with chalk boards advertising plats du jour such as ‘jambon et brie aux truffes’ for lunch on the go, but make your way to the main square with its medieval buildings and grand baroque clock tower, and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into a picture book. Traditional horses and carriages are tethered outside the town hall for bell-jingling rides around town, and as if it couldn’t get any more romantic, a rock-strewn river runs through the village, fed by melting mountain water. Foodies will be in their element too. Megève has the highest concentration of Michelin-star restaurants in the Alps – the top three being Flocons de Sel, Le 1920 and La Table De L’Alpaga. According to locals, there is a McDonald’s but you Le Chalet Zannier spa

wouldn’t know it – it sits disguised within a chalet with a fireplace. How chic. Up in the mountains, L’Auberge de la Cote is a lunchtime institution with the beau monde, and as for ‘après’, the DJs at La Folie Douce at the top of Mont Joux set fur-bobbles bobbing and mirrored Ray-Bans glinting every day from 2.30-4.30pm. Forget any crass Champagne-popping competitions though, it’s not that kind of scene. In fact, flying in the face of traditional aprèsski antics, Megève is moving in the direction of wellness. Les Fermes de Marie, a ravishing hotel on the outskirts of town, already has one of the best spas in the area, and this winter sees a brand-new wellness centre opening slap-bang in the centre of Megève town. Le Palais, complete with an Olympic-size swimming pool, indoor and outdoor balneotherapy pools, a light therapy room and sauna, is sure to have a remedy for every ski-based ailment from thigh-burn to hangovers. Superb skiing, luxe lodgings and a burgeoning spa scene? Perhaps Angelina will visit next season. Le Chalet Zannier is open for the winter season from mid-December to 31 March, lechaletzannier.com

Helaine Blumenfeld’s monumental bronze sculpture Fortuna now graces Jubilee Park Best known for her largescale commissions, Helaine Blumenfeld OBE is passionate about bringing sculpture into public spaces. Commissioned for Canary Wharf’s New District, Fortuna is her most ambitious work to date. It was inspired by the eponymous Roman goddess of luck and was designed to evoke the fullness and complexity of the human condition. Photograph Silvano Cattai

Nigel Hall’s painted steel sculpture Kiss is located in Cabot Square Kiss comprises two elements, a cone and a wedge, positioned in such a way as to balance naturally, but – held slightly apart at the base – a tension shimmers between them. The sculpture was purchased following Hall’s exhibition at Canary Wharf in autumn 2016.

SALES LEE O’NEILL, head of sales at Knight Frank Wapping, comments on the trends in the residential sales market

A

s 2016 draws to a close, I look back at the year and think to myself, ‘well, that was a year of two halves.’ During the winter and early spring months we saw the continuation of poor supply versus strong, investor-led demand (with investor eyes clearly fixed on the April 2016 stamp duty increase), which in turn led to record sale prices across most levels. As we entered the summer months, we all took a breath and waited to see the impact that ‘Brexit’ would have on our local market. Now, at the end of the year, we have witnessed a correction in the market place and discovered those people that have a genuine desire to buy and sell. Many people seem to think that Brexit has halted the sales market, that is not the case. Since the summer we have agreed sales across all price levels and noticeably the sales of several prime penthouses in the area for £3.5m and £5.2m respectively. Activity is not just at the higher levels, this week we have received

Many people seem to think that Brexit has halted the sales market, that is not the case three separate offers on a £485,000 one-bed apartment in Wapping; dare I say ‘sealed bid’ in the current market. In terms of values, I feel that, on the whole, we are at the same price levels now that we were at during the same spell last year. While new buyer registrations have dropped it is worth noting that traffic to the web portals is on par with last year and it is clear that a lot of buyers are studying the market and waiting for the right time to re-enter. Moving into 2017, I think we’ll see the return of willing domestic buyers with the possibility of overseas buyers, seeing value in the pound, once again looking at London property as a good long-term hold. The best thing to do in readiness for this demand is to make sure your property is priced at the correct level and you are instructing the agent with the best exposure and most local knowledge.

LETTINGS GARY HALL, regional partner at Knight Frank Wapping, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market

I

t’s fair to say that 2016 has been an interesting year. Taking everything into account, I have been reasonably pleased with the performance of the rental market in the east London area over the past 12 months. Saying this, while we have seen high levels of activity in the lower and mid-section of the rental market, there has been a noticeable slowdown in the upper bracket since Brexit. The City and Docklands areas are heavily affected by recruitment and as the large corporates sit on their hands and limit the number of senior executives being relocated to London, prices in the upper bracket have started to soften, with landlords looking at minimising their voids.

feel the heat Radiators neither have to be hidden nor thought of as an interior design burden anymore. The latest design from Bisque, the Lissett radiator, is formed from recycled scrap aluminium – because this metal is an efficient heat conductor, it uses less energy to heat up. Its graceful curves and slim profile make it an aesthetically pleasing addition to a room, and it comes in a range of colours; from volcanic grey to rose, Prussian blue to sunshine yellow. Over the past 18 months, we have seen a number of new luxury lifestyle residential schemes complete in the area; these include One Tower Bridge and Goodman’s Fields, with London Dock in Wapping starting to come available shortly. Encouragingly, these units have been less affected by the change in conditions. With high-spec finishes, amazing residents’ facilities and outstanding concierge services, they are achieving above average rents and letting reasonably quickly. So what’s next for 2017? Well, I’m writing this on the morning of the 9 November and Donald Trump has just won the Presidential Election in the US, so your guess is as good as mine. A longer period of uncertainty (especially around Article 50) could prolong the conditions we are experiencing, but I do believe the majority of the rental market will continue to trade well. With any period of uncertainty and change, flexibility and being realistic of market conditions is key to ensuring you are on the front foot and you get what you want.

F

inding somewhere to live can involve many considerations when it comes to its locality and amenities available in the area. After finding their Waterfront II property at Berkeley Homes Royal Arsenal Riverside, Kevin and Ann Ruck were amazed to find it was a perfect fit, especially when it came to getting around London. “Crossrail was the real decider when we were looking at where to buy our new home; along with the DLR, the on-site Thames Clipper service and the proximity to London City Airport, we feel it is set to be one of the best-connected parts of the city,” said Ann. “We plan to relocate our business, PR Academy, into the capital. We are now probably one of the largest PR education providers in the UK with up to 1,000 people studying with us each year, and we feel the time is right to relocate. We already run our classes in London and many of our students and business contacts are based there so being able to travel quickly across the capital is important.” Their current location could not be more different to where they are set to live in 2018, which is testament to how you

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

can live in London but still experience that community feeling in rural neighbourhoods. “We had been looking for our next move for some time. We had been living in a converted oast house in the Kent countryside for about 18 years, but we wanted something completely different, and we’ve found that at our new Waterfront II home, which also offers stunning views of the River Thames. “You really do get a sense of community at Royal Arsenal Riverside. It is a great place to explore with an array of restaurants, bars and cafés, as well as the Greenwich Heritage Centre, which celebrates the rich history of the borough and the military heritage of the development.” During the course of the year Royal Arsenal Riverside hosts a number of music events along with the popular Tall Ships festival, while a regular Farmers’ Market takes place on the second and last Saturday of the month, bringing the whole community together with a range of food and drink stalls. Kevin also admitted that their location will allow them to embrace their passions outside of their busy working lives: “Ann loves the theatre and for me it will make getting to my

PROPERTY

get connected favourite football team’s ground a lot quicker, which again was massive draw.” It is worth remembering that residents who buy at Waterfront will also get exclusive access to The Waterside Club, set in the Pavilion Square phase of the development, which will offer five-star relaxation facilities in the form of a luxury gym, a 20-metre swimming pool, sauna and steam room, along with a whole host of facilities designed to ease away the stresses of daily life. In a funny twist of fate the decision to buy off-plan will also see Ann move back to the very same place that has a family connection. Ann said: “My mother’s family arrived in Woolwich in the late 1800s from Ireland and many of my relatives actually worked in the Arsenal. It has changed so much since then and I can only wonder what they would make of it now. Many of the listed historical buildings are still in place and it is clear that the developers have taken care to ensure that the new properties complement the old ones, which is rare these days.” For more information on our Waterfront properties available to buy at Royal Arsenal Riverside, please contact 020 8331 7130 or visit royalarsenalriverside.co.uk to view our online brochures

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE:

UK house prices will increase by 0.5 per cent next year DIANA ALAM, head of residential development sales, JLL

Images for illustrative purposes only, courtesy of JLL

J

LL’s Residential Forecasts for the year ahead predict that Brexit will dominate UK housing markets over the short to medium term but that the market will remain reasonably strong and active despite the greater uncertainty and slower economy resulting from Brexit. JLL is forecasting that UK house prices will increase by 0.5 per cent next year, with a further one per cent growth in 2018. House price growth is predicted to rise to five per cent per annum by 2021 as greater certainty returns to the nation following Brexit. Transaction levels are forecast to decline from around 1.22 million this year to 1.08 million next year, an 11 per cent fall, as uncertainty causes some households to defer house purchase decisions. However, JLL predicts that the softer market conditions will encourage more first-time buyers to get onto the housing ladder, especially as interest rates will be so enticing. Diana Alam comments: “We are expecting UK housing markets to slow from current levels both in terms of transactions and price growth next year. This will be driven by Brexit uncertainty and a slightly softer economy. The outlook, however, is particularly unpredictable presently. Over the next couple of years we expect periods of volatility in terms of household and business sentiment as the Brexit roadmap unfolds but the underlying shortage in supply will provide support in value terms.”

JLL is concerned about the impact that Brexit will have on housing supply and believes it will be difficult to even maintain current levels of housebuilding given underlying conditions. Housebuilders will inevitably exercise greater caution when times are more uncertain. JLL is forecasting England housing starts will slip from around 140,000 homes in 2016 to 134,000 next year and in 2018. In London we expect housing starts to fall from around 18,000 homes in 2016 to 16,000 next year, having reached 23,700 starts in 2015. Diana continues: “Both new leaders Theresa May and Sadiq Khan have expressed their concern about a lack of housing supply and affordability, and both have been vocal about addressing this fundamental and vital issue. We know that both are actively seeking answers and it will be interesting to see whether policy initiatives target short-term supply improvements or look beyond the immediate horizon to create long-term solutions. Given the likely uncertainty over the next few years, we believe that policymakers will be wisest to look long term.”

Housing supply and delivery remain high on the political agenda and the next 12 months should see fresh ideas and new policies, starting with the imminent housing white paper. Adam Challis, head of residential research at JLL, concludes: “The housing agenda has broadened to include a wider range of tenures that will impact the market going forward. This has been a positive shift from Government as we need to address current housing needs and not just ambition. Focusing on the supply story rather than demand will be vital. To double construction rates, Government will need to look long term. Industry capacity will decline rapidly over the next decade, creating critical challenges of labour availability and skills. A focus on unrealistic targets during this parliament could derail policy from these bigger fixes.”
