ne of my favourite anecdotes from this issue is from Charlotte Tilbury, the make-up artist whose own brand is now being stocked by John Lewis (and therefore available to order into Waitrose Food, Fashion & Home). She describes how for years she used five tubes of mascara, never able to get the effect she wanted from just one. Arduous? Yes. But Tilbury has turned her passion for make-up into a business. She’s become renowned for her skill and in her own words it’s what she ‘dreamt of’. You can’t argue with her dedication or her enthusiasm. It’s inspiring (p.52). And this issue is full of examples of people finding a passion, and sticking with it. Livia Firth doesn’t just want to change her life, but the world. A visit to Bangladesh triggered a style crusade that has made Firth a champion for ethical production, including good working conditions and the use of sustainable materials. How can you get involved? Take the #30WearsChallenge or, at this time of year, opt for responsible jewellery brands such as Chopard... find out more on page 20. Then, on page 100, we hear how Honda is honouring the previously unfulfilled dream of its founder, Soichiro Honda, by manufacturing its very first private jet. It’s a fitting legacy for a man who was possessed by aviation, and would have delighted in the feat. Of course, the first step in getting what you want, is knowing what that is. With this in mind, we sent writer Gemma Taylor to the Alila Goa retreat (p.80). It not only left her feeling energised and lifted a self-confessed creative block, but gave her a biological boost akin to someone four years younger. What’s your passion?

The expression, “be the change you want to see in the world” could have been written for Livia Firth. Having identified a real problem in the fashion industry, she’s making significant headway in changing it – while looking immaculate, of course

ivia Firth just won’t conform to the ‘Hollywood wife’ stereotype. Yes, she’s an attractive, slim brunette, and of course she’s married to the world’s most famous [actor] Colin and travels the world with their gorgeously-named Italian children. However, more notably, Firth is a humanitarian advocating workers’ rights, a brand consultant and an Oxfam ambassador who is thoroughly shaking up the fashion industry.

It all started with a trip to Bangladesh in 2008, before which, says Firth, she “never really thought about fashion.” It was there, alongside “formidable women” including environmental journalist Lucy Siegle, ethical designer Orsola de Castro and eco-friendly stylist and adviser Jocelyn Whipple, that the impact of the factory production line was driven home. Being on-site in Bangladesh gave Firth a glimpse into the origins of fashion we never see: the real-life implications for those working to fulfil a bottomless pit of consumerism in Western society. Today’s philosophy of ‘more is better’ and the rise of fast fashion has brought the ability to shop quickly and indiscriminately to the masses, whether looking for a new dress for a Saturday night, or the perfect shoes for a big meeting. We can do so because the items are available at a low price, but elsewhere, there’s a cost to pay. “The impact this has on people and planet is huge,” explains Firth. She saw first-hand that cheap mass-production of clothes in developing countries often meant mistreatment of garment workers and abuse of the natural environment. “I learned that fashion is the second most polluting industry after mining and oil, that it is worth an estimated $3 trillion dollars and that it employs almost 2.8 billion women.” Firth remains astounded. “Can you believe it?” For Firth, continuing to consume fashion in the same way became impossible, but the solution to the problem seemed simple. “Buy less and get more ‘fashion mileage’ out of each piece. Buy heritage pieces that will last, and become an active citizen through your wardrobe,” she explains. She began with leading by example, making sartorial choices that included – gasp – outfit repeats, a cardinal sin in much of Hollywood.

her green values mean that designers and celebrities are taking note, in part through participation in her so-called Green Carpet Challenge. This ongoing project pioneered by Firth in 2009 has turned the red carpet into a homage to recycling and sustainability. Countless fashion houses have turned their hand to ethical production, including Sergio Rossi, Erdem and Victoria Beckham. Dolce & Gabbana even used fabric made from recycled plastic bottles to produce a dress for Firth, and celebrities from Emma Watson to Cameron Diaz have donned ‘green’ outfits for a good cause. Highlights include Meryl Streep in gold Lanvin, which used eco-certified fabrics and Emily Blunt wearing a black Carolina Herrera gown featuring vintage French chiffon from the 1940s. But the people that Firth and Eco-Age really want to reach are you and I. CUTTING EDGE For their second Kamushki collection, 20-something sister duo Mariam and Dania Sawedeg have created a range of pieces based on a fish’s anatomy as a symbol of good luck:

“For our Wishbone collection, we have paid homage to our Libyan roots. In Libyan tradition, the fish represents goodness and is worn to protect the wearer from the evil eye and bad energy.”

Chanel has created a new fine jewellery collection dedicated to the icons most associated with the French house. These include Comète, which was the focus of the original 1932 Bijoux de Diamants collection designed by Coco Chanel: “I wanted to cover women in constellations. Stars! Stars of all sizes…” The Plume pieces similarly draw reference to 1932, the curved feather earrings and necklaces mirroring the pieces made in that year. Finally, the Camélia Ajouré necklace, earrings and rings pay tribute to arguably the most famous Chanel symbol: the camellia flower. Les Icônes de Chanel, POA; chanel.com

The empire strikes back

It has been sleeping for almost a century. Now, spearheaded by aviation specialist Bremont, the British watch industry is in full-scale revival. Richard brown meets company co-founders Nick and Giles English, the brothers on a mission to do the impossible and manufacture their own movement

long with professional money laundering, overpriced ski resorts and little red pocket knives, Switzerland has made mechanical watches its ‘thing’. Rude, really, when you consider the disproportionately large contribution ALT1-Z Zulu Chronograph, £4,295 Britain has made to horological history. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Thomas Mudge invented the lever escapement; John Harrison’s marine clocks solved the longitude problem; Robert Hooke discovered the science behind springs; and John Arnold pioneered the wearable watch. The greatest watchmaker of the 20th century was also a Brit; George Daniels’ coaxial escapement was the first practical escapement to have been devised for 250 years (it was adopted by Omega in 1999). Meaningful British watchmaking, though – and we’re talking in the large-scale sense here, not about the handful of masterpieces produced by Daniels’ heir Roger Smith, which he creates from his humble workshop on the Isle of Man – ceased in the early 1970s when Smiths Industries, which had previously employed more than 400 people and provided watches to Sir Edmund Percival Hillary and his team during their expedition to Everest, diversified away from timepieces. In the ensuing years, Switzerland was allowed to consolidate the watch industry and make mechanical timepieces its own. Salvation came in the unlikely shape of a plane crash. In 1995, Oxfordshire brothers Nick and Giles English lost their father to a flying accident, an incident in which Giles himself broke more than 30 bones and was lucky to survive. The brothers decided to dedicate the rest of their lives to producing something about which they both felt passionate: pilot’s watches. “Our goal was to help reinvigorate and restart the British watch industry,” says younger brother Giles, now 42, who, having spent his adolescence restoring old clocks and his adulthood flying historic aircrafts, was suited to the task in more than just name. Established in 2002, Bremont the brand took its name from Bremont the man – a gracious French

farmer and aviation enthusiast in whose field the brothers crash-landed in the late 1990s. (Like the swashbuckling heroes of a 19th century adventure novel, the lives of the English brothers are littered with such tales of mishap and escapade, too many to document here but worthy of an autobiography in the future, surely?) Bremont’s first collection, the ALT1-C series, debuted in 2007. What the brand has achieved in less than a decade since is nothing short of extraordinary. A flagship store in Mayfair’s South Audley Street opened in 2012, followed by outposts in Hong Kong, the City’s Royal Exchange and, more recently, New York’s Madison Avenue. The company has acted as the official timekeeper for the Epsom Derby and the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race and runs regular events for its ‘Adventurers’ Club’, which boasts such illustrious ambassadors as record-breaking climber Kenton Cool, polar explorer Ben Saunders and Seven Summits mountaineer Jake Myer – the youngest Briton to have successfully climbed the highest mountain on each continent. Graham Bell and Charley Boorman are also Bremont luminaries. Following partnerships with ejection seat specialist Martin-Baker, and both Jaguar and Boeing, last year saw Bremont score its biggest marketing coup yet, becoming the Official Timing Partner to the 35th America’s Cup – ousting one of the world’s most valuable luxury brands, Louis Vuitton, in doing so. More impressive than the sponsorship deals, the celebrity ambassadors and even Nick’s cameo appearance in Kingsman: The Secret Service (directors of the 2014 stylish spy flick chose to decorate its actors in Bremont watches) is Photography: Bremont co-founders, Nick and Giles English

the astonishing inroads the company has made towards its original objective of putting Britain back on the watchmaking map. For the first time in nearly 50 years, Britain is designing and assembling a significant number of its own mechanical watches. OK, so the 8,000 pieces Bremont makes each year barely registers against the run of watches produced by its Swiss counterparts – it’s rumoured that Rolex alone annually pumps out more than a million – but for a country that ten years ago was producing practically nothing, it’s quite the achievement. “The British watch industry has some great guys making watches,” says Nick, 45. “By having

“Very few manufactures make everything themselves, even in Switzerland” our own Bremont apprentice schemes, and by investing in our own equipment for our new parts, we are playing our small part in reinvigorating the industry.” Nick is being characteristically humble – Bremont has spearheaded the revival of British watchmaking almost singlehandedly. In 2013, the company opened a custom-built headquarters in Henley-on-Thames. As a statement of intent, the brothers recruited 12 watchmakers and four apprentices to work there, bringing the process of finishing movements and final watch assembly ‘in-house’. A year later, the brand went further, announcing the launch of a Silverstonebased facility dedicated to the production of movement components – the holy grail of watchmaking for even the largest of brands. Raymond Weil’s First Pilot’s Watch

Better Connected?

Before establishing his eponymous watch company in 1976, Raymond Weil was fond of mountain flights around the Matterhorn. He did so in a Piper aeroplane. Fitting, then, that it is with this small-aircraft manufacturer that his grandson, and the company’s current CEO, Elie Bernheim, has partnered to produce Raymond Weil’s first pilot’s watch. The shiny blue minute and hour hands on the self-winding, 45mm Freelancer Piper Special Edition resemble an aircraft’s rotor blades, while the GMT hand, with its red pointer, references a compass. Freelancer Piper Special Editon, £2,895, Raymond Weil, raymond-weil.com

Breitling and TAG Heuer have become the latest brands to partner with Silicon Valley.

ONE TO WATCH This month Sandy Madhvani, Showroom Manager at David M Robinson in Canary Wharf, selects his watch of the moment:

“Launched in 1956, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date was the first wristwatch to display the date and day spelt out in full on the dial. Today, the Day-Date 40 is equipped with the new-generation calibre 3255, which comprises no less than 14 patents – testament to Rolex’s commitment to innovation.”

TAG Heuer’s

Connected Watch TAG Heuer’s ‘Connected Watch’ (£1,100) was engineered with Intel Inside and is powered by Android Wear. A 46mm diameter means that the watch at least resembles a time-telling device – unlike many smart watches of the past – with a case, back, buckle and lugs made from titanium, as well as a rubber strap. Most interestingly, anyone who buys TAG’s Connected watch can exchange it, at the end of the two-year warranty period, for a mechanical Carrera for an additional £1,100 – perhaps that’s TAG telling us something about the shelf life of its creation. Breitling, whose answer to the smart watch question is the Exospace B55 (£6,650), is keen to stress that the chronograph is very much the boss of the watch-phone partnership – the accompanying app, it says, is designed to improve user-friendliness, and little else. Unlike TAG’s effort, Breitling’s watch won’t tell you that you’ve received a text, phone call or email. What it does provide is a 1/100th of a second chronograph, two time zones, a countdown timer, a flight time and a perpetual calendar. It’s powered by the brand-new Caliber B55, a COSC-certified SuperQuartz movement that will remain accurate to within a few seconds a year. The phone is used for changing the time, setting alarms, adjusting time zones and storing data. tagheuer.co.uk; breitling.com

A Spring Fling

A

s one critic put it when viewing the S/S16 Michael Kors Collection show, “His narrative about a serene, discreetly moneyed, and always optimistic lifestyle is enthusiastically received far beyond the United States.” It’s a sentiment that also rings true of the MICHAEL Michael Kors line, the brand’s ultra-modern diffusion range that launched in 2004 to extend its youthful, girl-about-town vibe, and stretch the designer’s influence from runway to weekend. This season, Kors’ confident muses, portrayed by models Aneta Pajak and Grace Hartzel, are on a sun-soaked Californian road-trip, captured by photographer Mario Testino in the new ad campaign (left). The look is one of nonchalance: supersoft denim separates and sundresses are both timeless and preppy, while longline, relaxed blazers and white jeans give the look more polish. If you want prints, the options are subtle, a white floral ditzy motif on a navy blouse, perhaps. Of course, there’s the tortoiseshell cat eye sunglasses, and a chunky white watch or two on counter as well – Kors is the master of accessories: look out for espadrille sandals tied at the ankle, and a tan saddle bag so familiar it feels silly not to buy it for its pure versatility. On paper, the individual pieces are simple, the palette inoffensive. And the fact is, we may all covet skirts appliquéd with vivid red poppies and gowns slashed to the waist, but we’ll wear sleeveless blouses and sportier outerwear – it’s pure business sense to acknowledge that fashion is built on high quality basics with a twist. Everyone wants the ideal capsule wardrobe. Michael Kors, Jubilee Place

WANDERLUST Elegantly named Lo Splendore Della Vita (The Splendour of Life) in honour of the motto of the late Salvatore Ferragamo himself – “there is no limit to beauty or the pursuit of perfection” – the brand’s S/S16 campaign depicts the effortless enjoyment of the globetrotting gentleman, and was shot by Craig McDean against the backdrop of a charming villa. Alongside the collection’s warm, neutral shades, some pieces feature bright colour details – primarily in graphic jigsaw patterns or stripes – in combinations of pink, purple and orange, or separately, as seen in the tailored black jacket’s symmetrical blue stripes. ferragamo.com

With just about every shade of neutral under its belt, COS’ collections stay true to its Swedish roots and are always a lesson in mastering minimalism. The latest pieces to arrive in store include the lightweight Armstrong bomber – the ideal outerwear for transitioning into spring – while T-shirts sport simple details such as sharp collars and subtly turned back sleeves. COS, Jubilee Place

Suede was seen on the Gieves & Hawkes and Richard James runways among others at the S/S16 shows, and its key piece was the jacket. Eclipsing last season’s love for shearling by far, suede means lighter alternatives to wear throughout the warmer months, such as the zip-up overshirt from Whistles. Gieves & Hawkes took things a whole lot further with the suede suit – pairing its jackets with matching shorts. Shoes are of course the shortcut to this look – try BOSS’ suede moccasins or Crockett & Jones’ more classic loafers.

BEAUTY

and the BEST While working for well-known faces, from Kate Moss to Jennifer Lopez, make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury became famous – with her own brand, writes GABRIELLE LANE

U

ntil 2013, if you had your make-up done by Charlotte Tilbury (and your name was, in all likelihood, Sienna or Kate), you’d be wearing five layers of mascara from five different tubes. The woman who started slaking it on her lashes aged 13, had wanted a product that would curl, lengthen, separate and add volume, long before she was grooming anyone else – and had resorted to combining brands for added impact. Add Full Fat Lashes, the multi-tasking wand of her own design, to what she calls “Gisele-in-a-jar” – a skin highlighter to wear under your make-up – and you have two core products in her self-titled beauty collection that spans at least ten different looks. Tilbury, who for years has been in the entourage of various put-together celebrities, now has everyone talking about her in her own right, and John Lewis is the latest stockist to come calling. “The Charlotte Tilbury product range is successful because it helps women to really unlock the power of make-up through the combination of easy-to-use products and simple application techniques,” explains Megan Mosley, the department store’s junior beauty buyer. “You don’t need to be an expert make-up artist to follow her

tutorials, her techniques make make-up simple. The results are truly transformative.” Tilbury’s make-overs began at boarding school, where, as she told London’s Burning: Portraits from a Creative City – a Thames & Hudson tome about London’s cultural movers and shakers – nights were spent re-styling plaits and kilts. Today, she adds: “Overnight, people looked at me in a different way… I was more popular and I felt more confident. It changed my life. Since, no-one has ever seen me without make-up on! I definitely wouldn’t have the life and career I have without it.”

“Make-up changed my life... No-one has ever seen me without make-up on” For Tilbury, make-up represents neither insecurity nor sexism. “Beauty icons like Helena Rubenstein, Estée Lauder and Coco Chanel inspire me; strong, powerful women paved the way for women to access make-up today, and completely shook the industry.” Professionally, she trained under make-up artist Mary Greenwell, before establishing her own

client list that includes Kate Moss (“hypnotising magnetism”), Amal Clooney (“intelligence and grace”), Jennifer Aniston and Blake Lively (both “incredible women”). The decision to turn her artistic talent into her own business was a natural one. “All my friends would quiz me on what eye shadow goes with what, which blusher suits their skin-tone, and what lipstick goes with a dress, and so I designed a beauty wardrobe of ten looks to erase these problems. It’s time-saving, off-the-peg, fool-proof ready-made make-up.” Along with the skin highlighter, which is called Wonderglow, and the aforementioned mascara, Tilbury worked with a product development team on a moisturiser she named Magic Cream. In her sassy but sing-song way (she grew up in Ibiza but cites

“At this rate we’re going to be 150-years-old with... Magic Cream on our faces” London as her inspiration) she insists “you can’t have a beautiful painting without a beautiful canvas.” “[The moisturiser] is packed with ingredients I’ve been blending together for years,” she adds. “I call it ‘the magic dew of youth’, it’s also incredibly comforting – like a cashmere blanket for the skin. I start all make-up with it.” Her other must-have is a compact with a highlighter and bronzer duo, called Filmstar Bronze & Glow. “I use this all the time for the red carpet. It’s the perfect natural tan shade for sculpting, and a gorgeous pearlescent highlighter, which is like dripping candlelight on to your face.” In person Tilbury is warm and conspiratorial. “I am vain,” she laughs. “I love looking good. I don’t want a knife, I don’t want a needle but I’ll do anything and pay anything to have a fabulous cream. Everyone is ageing faster than our predecessors but at this rate we’re going to be 150-years-old with Google in our brains and Magic Cream on our faces.” It is Filmstar Bronze & Glow that she maintains can give the illusion of having had a face-lift. “A lot of women are afraid of it, but contouring is the best way to slim the face. This is a secret weapon for enhancing your facial framework.”

s l u x ury l o n d o n . c o . u k s

If you’ve never quite got the hang of it, and are too busy for a YouTube tutorial, listen up: “Suck in your cheeks and using the Sculpt shade, follow the hollow. Paint it along the jawline and the temples to slim and sculpt,” she explains. “Then, dust the Highlight shade on top of the cheekbones, down the nose and on the cupid’s bow. Then you can add blusher high on top of the apples of cheeks to lift the face.” Tilbury maintains you must have a friendly personality to work in the beauty industry. In London’s Burning she reflected on the professional relationships she holds: “You get to be with people in places or times that not even their families sometimes or their best friends would share, because the only time that someone gets that close to your face is if they’re your lover. “So it’s an incredibly intimate job, and you do become very involved. For me it’s about aura. You feel someone’s feelings, you pick all of that up.” Today, at a brand event, she recounts testing all of the products with friends and family. “When I got the final sample last Christmas, it was hilarious. My sister and I got the eye cream and went around everybody from my 18-yearold niece to my 80-year-old godfather. When I put on moisturiser and it says 28 days, I think ‘I don’t even have 28 minutes’. With this you see immediate results of smoothing and de-puffing.” The best advice she’s been given is from her mother who repeated the mantra ‘sun is beauty suicide.’ “Now I look at my baby, Valentine, who is 16-months and I think ‘oh my God! That skin’. It’s bouncy and plump. I promise you, you will wake up with the best skin of your life.” She is clearly in her element. “The reason I built this brand was to share everything I know,” she sighs. “This is what I dreamt of.” Waitrose Food, Fashion & Home, Canada Place (click & collect johnlewis.com)

Ready, set, track HTC and Under Armour have unveiled the UA Healthbox™, the world’s first connected fitness system that monitors and manages sleep, fitness, activity and nutrition. Showcased at a tech summit in Las Vegas in January, it’s is tipped for its UK launch this year and consists of a heart rate monitor, a fitness band that tracks daily activity and sleep, and a Wi-Fi enabled scale, which all sync with the UA Record app. With data all in one place, it’s easy for users to see where improvement is needed: the system aims to not just monitor activity, but also “present information in a meaningful way,” says Robin Thurston, chief digital officer at Under Armour. A 20-minute workout equivalent to three hours in the gym, is surely the dream for many. And, its makers promise the new E-Pulsive training regime delivers results quickly. The high-tech sessions entail strapping an electric vest and pads onto your back, abdominal muscles, legs, glutes and arms, while guided through a series of lunges and stationary sprints by an E-Pulsive personal trainer who can bring the equipment anywhere. An electric current delivers impulses through electrodes, causing muscle contraction, meaning muscles work harder and more are targeted at once: your body vibrates as if it’s being pummelled. Unsurprisingly, the technology is already popular, in Germany with the Bayern Munich team, and also with sportsmen like Usain Bolt and Rafael Nadal. T

here are very few ways in which I am remotely similar to Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley. I am not, alas, a gorgeous willowy blonde reportedly engaged to Jason Statham, and nor am I the proud owner of bee-stung lips and the object of international fame. But mere mortals now have something in common with the model and designer, thanks to the recent launch of her activewear range for Marks & Spencer’s Autograph collection. Donning workout attire is a shared pastime for myself and the supermodel, because come the weekend, absolutely any weekend, you will find me in workout clothes. My ubiquitous sartorial choice has led friends to assume I’ve kicked up my gym habits, but fear not, fitness-phobes; the truth is, I dress like this regardless of what I’m doing. And I’m not alone. “Sports-inspired apparel reached global retail sales value of $22bn (£14.5bn) in 2014, up six per cent from the previous year and in comparison to four per cent growth in the overall

apparel market,” says Bernadette Kissane, apparel analyst at Euromonitor International. To put it in high street terms, the Asics Canary Wharf store saw a 19 per cent increase in its annual sales value during 2015, according to area manager Saulo Ramirez. Why? Quite simply, we’re all wearing workout clothes more often. It began with an increased interest in sports and fitness classes. London’s focus on health and wellness means, says Natalie Walker, master instructor at Canary Wharf’s trendy spinning studio Psycle, “it has never before been as ‘fashionable’ to do exercise.” Subsequently, there was increased demand for more stylish gym gear. People who already exercised were upping the frequency of their sessions, and people who had never worked out were trying the new fitness crazes emerging all over London, and realising that wearing a sweaty T-shirt and leggings

CANARY WHARF | 61

didn’t make them feel their best while doing so. And so, brands stepped up their game. “Designers started throwing in more daring colours and now we have everything under the sun including laser cut holes and sheer panels in every possible direction,” says Walker. And, as gym clothes have become not only functional but fashionable, not to mention flattering, due to the contouring nature of Lycra and Spandex, we want to show them off, and we have taken these attractive, comfortable clothes and started to wear them outside of the gym. Trendy workout clothes are now socially acceptable everywhere from dinner to the cinema. There’s even an amalgamated word for the trend blurring active wear with leisure wear: ‘athleisure’. It entered the dictionary last year. “On my day off, whether I’m just running to the health food shop around the corner or even going for lunch with friends, I’d much rather sport my new LuluLemon blue snakeskin leggings than put on dull black jeans,” says Walker. Tamara Hill-Norton, founder and creative director of Sweaty Betty, agrees. “People are wearing their gym clothes all day, adapting [the look] a little bit, and making it look quite cool and funky,” she says. Fabletics is a sports brand co-founded by actress Kate Hudson in 2013. “The most exciting part is creating looks and pieces for every woman and every body type; things women can feel good in all day,” said Hudson at the time. “At Fabletics, we believe all women should be able to have hip styles and amazing quality.” As sportswear brands have begun responding to shifting needs, so too have traditional high-end fashion houses. Collaborations to date have included the Stella McCartney for Adidas line, Alexander Wang and H&M’s limited-edition sportswear range in 2014 and the S/S 16 activewear collection at Matches, featuring new materials such as waterproof velvet.

s l u x ury l o n d o n . c o . u k s

In 2014, Net-a-Porter, the multi-billion dollar fashion retail website, announced an extensive collection devoted to athleisure wear to keep up with the evolving market. And the relationship between fashion and fitness now extends to footwear. Trainers, among them Adidas Stan Smith styles, have become an everyday fashion staple, leading Kissane to speak of “sneaker fever”: “The market for performance-led footwear grew by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of seven per cent from 2009-2014, as consumers adopted running shoes for everyday activities.” Analysts believe our new-found passion for a sporty look is part of our wider cultural aspirations: the outfits aren’t just comfortable, flattering and practical; but rather a statement of success. It’s a declaration of disposable income, of leisure time, of focusing on one’s own health and well-being. Anyone spending £85 on Sweaty Betty leggings is part of an elite, lifestyle-orientated club, whereby if you’re not spending hours toning yourself in the gym, it at least it looks like you are. While the price for luxury activewear is high, it’s arguably worth it. The dual functionality of clothing that can be worn for both working out and during downtime justifies a certain cost, and for some, workout clothes are purchased over

“The sporty look isn’t just comfortable, flattering and practical, but a statement too” traditional weekend attire, creating space in the wardrobe budget. “I think I only have one pair of jeans now,” says Walker. Designers explain that it’s the technical specifications of fabric that can be worn for workouts that is adding to the high cost of individual garments, but for good reason. Rose Goldman founded activewear brand Victor + Leap last year. She says the brand focuses on “style and performance, without compromise.” “Something I hear repeatedly is that women want versatility, to deal with whatever the day looks like – work, coffee, yoga at lunch, picking up food, cycling home. [That] was a guiding principle in how the clothes were developed. We only use luxury performance fabrics from Italy and Switzerland. Our fabrics don’t feel like typical ‘exercise’ fabric… but [they are] also highperforming sports clothes.”

As Hill-Norton of Sweaty Betty has said, “[Women will] go to a really cool exercise class with their friends and that’s the beginning of their night out and then, they’ll go party.” The athleisure trend is showing no sign of slowing down, and if America, where the trend was first seen, is an indicator, it’s set to accelerate in popularity worldwide. “Growth in this area is expected to continue, with a rate of two per cent from 2014 to 2019,” says Kissane of Euromonitor, and there’s particular growth in the Asia/Pacific region, she adds, which has a predicted market growth rate of four per cent during the same period. Walker agrees. “It’s only going to get bigger and better. Every time I walk into my studio, I see brighter and bolder prints, I see more risqué shapes.” It may also be that the trend is an empowering one: “Most of all I see more confidence among the individuals wearing these types of clothes.” Fitness focused fashion is a thing: there’s continuing demand, increasingly innovative designs and what’s more, additional brands such as The White Company are set to enter the athleisure market. Southern Comfort For a buzzy atmosphere, generously sized plates of comfort food and enough rum to sink a ship, Crossrail Place’s Big Easy doesn’t disappoint

A

s January eases into a surprisingly cold and no-less-gloomy February, we can assume everyone is turning down cocktails, saving money and spending evenings at home. Right? Wrong. Very wrong, as a Tuesday night at Big Easy restaurant in Canary Wharf proved. With people being turned away at the door (a real feat, as it’s a huge, 11,000 sqft space with room for 400) and standing space at the bar heaving, the restaurant is thriving, mainly with post-work revellers, alongside a few families. It could be because it’s exactly what people want of a winter’s night. Cosy – the décor is designed with an 18th century Dockside warehouse in mind, so think wood panelling, lantern-like ceiling lights and rope details – with an attractive bar display featuring 500 bottles of whiskies. There’s also more than 100 rums and, as an added bonus, the friendliest staff imaginable. The food is inspired by the home cooking beloved in the ‘Deep South’, or the Southern states of America, which is nothing if not comfort food. When a menu lists cornbread and deep-fried pickles, you know you’re

onto a feast that is both soothing and filling. Seafood and barbecued meat are specialities of Big Easy, and as clothingprotection bibs are given out, it becomes apparent that you’ll be snapping those lobster claws and getting down and dirty with the BBQ sauce. Happily going along with the American vibe, I order an Old Fashioned cocktail (bourbon, smoked maple syrup, bitters), that is perfectly sweetened, while my guest sticks to a classic whisky. Pit-smoked BBQ wings smothered in sauce are a natural starter, as the restaurant has one of the UK’s largest pit rooms on site, housing three twotonne US-built smokers. Finger food is paramount here, and it’s impossible not to get messy, but the wings are delicious, managing to be satisfying yet moreish. The iceberg wedge with blue cheese (a salad, but don’t go thinking its healthy – the creamy sauce and chunks of blue cheese were certainly not) was delicious and generously sized. As we looked around the restaurant, we saw several tables opting for lobster in various forms, and it did look good, but my friend was too captivated by the fillet steak to opt for anything else. He

found it perfectly cooked at mediumrare, and exactly pink enough to be juicy and tender. I take one for the vegetarians and opt for the spicy black bean veggie burger, which is fabulous. Enormous, crisped on the outside and with a thick, chunky texture that was perfectly paired with slices of avocado, it doesn’t stop us from really going to town on the sides, which are my favourite part of the large menu: think macaroni cheese, fries and coleslaw. The wild-roasted mushrooms were, surprisingly, a total hit. The little quirks at Big Easy are great, from customers’ business cards stuck on the walls to pretzels served with beer at the bar. There’s live music playing (days later, I’m still singing Sitting On The Dock Of A Bay), which creates buzz and a good atmosphere while not being too loud to talk over. It’s a restaurant you’re guaranteed to have fun at. As you may have gathered from the feast we consume, dessert is a step too far. Then, of course, on my way out I spy someone eating a slice of banana cream pie, and was filled with instant diner’s remorse at having not been able to persevere. Never mind, Big Easy – I know I’ll be back. Big Easy, Crossrail Place, bigeasy.co.uk

A new take on fusion food

Rethink everything you ever thought about Italian cooking; a Japanese twist on the culture of comfort food has arrived

I

f you’ve seen the houseboat moored at South Quay that looks like a condo in Ibiza (chocolate brown wood panelling, double-height floorto-ceiling glass and lots of palm trees in pots), you’ll know where Bella Cosa, its less conspicuous neighbour, is found. The former architectural feat may have to be moved regularly for tax reasons, but the latter is an upmarket Italian restaurant on the waterfront that opened in October; both could have been plucked from the Riviera.

The biggest reinvention of a carb-laden comfort food culture you’ll see Having overseen Italian menus in fine dining restaurants as far afield as Singapore, executive chef Kentaro Torii has made it his niche to offer the flavours of Italy, with the artistic presentation of Japanese cuisine. Assembling six-fish carpaccio into delicate flowers and sprinkling dishes with truffle flakes are techniques that have already merged with Peruvian

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

cooking in London, but here, these flourishes are signs of the biggest reinvention of a carb-laden comfort food culture you’ll see in a long time. Bella Cosa has ‘client dinner’ written all over it. The restaurant caters for meetings, a sign of its well-heeled diners, and for after hours there’s a glassfronted private wine room lined with Italian grapes, and artisan beers, as well as front row seating at the chef’s station. Torii’s signature dishes include a five cheese ravioli filled with suckling pig cheek and finished with saffron sauce, beetroot and black truffle. It’s delicate, silky and light – everything you’d expect it not to be, with layers of flavour that somehow work with the pasta without being blanketed by it. Bella Cosa does meat well too; succulent pork belly is cooked for hours until it’s buttery soft with a salty, crisp edge, then served with wild mushrooms and a Jerusalem artichoke purée, in a welcome alternative to the pea-based foam you get elsewhere. Again, this is the kind of gastronomy where everything is presented in trios, at perfect angles, and it’s a style that elevates the occasion.

For dessert, Torii keeps the classic Italian tiramisu but toys with texture: underneath the cloud of coffee and mascarpone are crunchy finger biscuits. There is nothing wrong with slabs of lasagne, but this isn’t the place. It was about time someone took the pizza and pasta dishes of nights-in, and transformed them into show-stoppers. The sweetest sin?

the debate From a 4pm chocolate pick-me-up to a sweet cup of tea, everyone has their sugary pleasure. Less tempting is the side of guilt, as we’re told how detrimental to health and well-being sugar is. But, where has the notion come from, and is it really the case? WORDS: charlotte phillips

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

FOOD & DRINK

O

n some level, sugar makes us happy. Whether because it increases serotonin levels, which acts as an anti-depressant, and dopamine levels, which triggers our experience of reward and pleasure, or simply because we know it’s indulgent and it tastes good, there’s no denying that it quite literally makes life sweeter. But sugar has received a bad reputation of late. What with it being deemed as ‘addictive as cocaine’ in countless articles that claim its consumption is responsible for diabetes, obesity and depression, it would seem as though the white stuff is slowly but surely killing us all. This virulent anti-sugar campaign has come at a time of extreme health awareness around food. Indeed, orthorexia nervosa is increasingly coming to the forefront of medical recognition: it is an excessive focus on eating only healthy, highly restricted foods, and an all-consuming preoccupation with staying away from toxicity.

“The biggest problem contributing to obesity is lack of physical exercise” However, it mustn’t be forgotten that our ancestors have been eating sugar for generations. Home-made treats used a small number of simple ingredients including sugar; whereas today, we cook less, buy more, and ingredient lists include more chemicals and preservatives. Ironically, as the diet market has expanded, so have our waistlines. But why is sugar the specific enemy? Media reports can be confusing, but on hand to disseminate fact from fiction is José Orive, executive director at the International Sugar Organization (ISO), who is based in One Canada Square, Canary Wharf. The ISO is a UN body that conducts a variety of sugar-related tasks, from dealing with traders and growers to overseeing research and organising conferences. Orivo believes that consumers lack factual information around sugar. “Sugar has been demonised by people who have something to gain from doing so,” he says, namely, “so-called experts and those in the alternative sweetener industry.”

CANARY WHARF | 71

Orive suggests the biggest culprit contributing to obesity is lack of physical exercise. “Sugar is just the latest food item to be used as a ‘whipping voice’. Salt and red meat have also come under fire at various points.” So has fat, says Professor David Benton, Professor of Psychology at Swansea University. “We have been down this road before. The case for fat being the basis of obesity led to supermarkets being filled with the low-fat or ‘lite’ options, and these novel food items did not reverse the incidence of obesity.” He continues, “Why, if reducing fat did not work, would it then be expected that reducing the amount of sugar in our diets will be more successful?” Indeed, author of The Sugar Casino, Jonathan Kingsman writes, “we are consuming less sugar per person than our parents did, but obesity rates for adults and children have increased horrifically during the past 40 years.” Kingsman’s November 2015 article Sugar and Health: Letting the Facts Spoil a Good Story explains why: we’re eating 450 calories per day more than they did, often due to fatty and fast food. Kingsman writes, “Sugar isn’t responsible for the obesity epidemic and cutting it out won’t solve the problem. Reducing portion sizes and taking the stairs will.” Likewise, while Type 2 diabetes is often heralded as the result of too much sugar, Orive says it’s caused by being overweight due to higher caloric intake than expenditure, “no matter where the calories come from.” Indeed, research from the charity Diabetes UK states, “While reducing the amount of sugar in our diets can be important, people should do this because sugar contains lots of calories, rather than because of any direct effect it may or may not have on risk of Type 2 diabetes.” And furthermore, if an individual chooses to avoid sugar, they’ll likely swap it for fat, says Professor Benton. “The risk is that removing sugar will lead to the choice of food higher in fat, to ensure that palatability is maintained. Dietary surveys have reported the so-called sugar-fat seesaw. Per gram, fat has more than twice the calories as sugar.” This could arguably lead to even more weight gain and related illness. However, to ignore the dangers of sugar entirely would be foolish. Certainly, gram for gram, sugar is higher in calories than many foods, offers little nutritional benefit, and has been linked to insulin resistance and tooth decay. Francesca Liparoti is a nutritional therapist who

works with the Wellness Centre at Reebok Sports Club in Canary Wharf. “The sugar we have today is of a worse quality than our ancestors were exposed to,” she says. “Their sugar came from scavenging for fruits, a labour-intensive process resulting in a small amount of natural sugar to satiate a sweet tooth, with the natural vitamins and minerals present still intact. Today, it’s been processed to the extent that there is no goodness left in sugar at all.” As well as quality, Liparoti has a problem with unreported sugar quantity. “It’s everywhere you turn, and we’re all eating more than we think.” Thirty grams (7 teaspoons) is the most added sugar an adult should be consuming daily, say nutrition experts, yet a single 330ml can of coke contains 35g, and it’s added to innocent-looking foods like salad dressing and cereal. Unquestionably, sugar should form part of a balanced diet, not the basis of it. However, the future of the sugar industry need not be bleak. There are increasingly innovative and beneficial combinations of the sweet stuff emerging, explains Orive. “In Guatemala and other developing countries, sugar is fortified with vitamin A, which children are often deficient in. In 17 years, they’ve eliminated child blindness caused through vitamin A deficiency, and next up are trials of sugar fortified with iron.” Why sugar in particular? “Because the overwhelming majority of the population consumes it, especially in remote rural areas, so the ability to reach those that most need vitamin A is enhanced.” As for today, swearing off sugar would certainly be virtuous, but also, dare I say, a slightly miserable existence, and there’s a risk of entering a deprivation and bingeing cycle. How should we consume it in the UK? Where you can, make swaps: Liparoti cites switching from Dairy Milk to Green & Black’s chocolate with a high cocoa percentage and less added sugar. She also recommends that it’s worth checking how many grams of sugar are in items like pasta sauce and soups, before you buy. As with most things, sugar should be enjoyed in moderation, and, of course, in conjunction with a balanced lifestyle including physical exercise. Eat the brownie. Just, not all of it, not every day, and don’t wash it down with a Coke. T

he Pig in Brockenhurst has always been more about country life, and eating enough for a family of four, than flashy gadgets and A/V. Make no mistake, its cosiness, thread count and service mean it’s luxurious – but this is for city types dreaming of becoming Lord or Lady of the manor for the weekend, not Ferraris. In January, The Pig launched its new suite named Bert’s Box, a quirky garden house with eco-friendly features such as underfloor heating and timber cladding, in a partnership with London architects Box 9, and Bert & May Spaces. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring the New Forest in, while a log burner keeps things toasty. You can opt for solar thermal heat pumps and edible garden walls at the extra cost, or you can just preoccupy yourself with hospitality at the main house: the kitchen garden and surrounding New Forest is the inspiration for delicious venison cuts and wild mushroom soups. from £395 per night, thepighotel.com

Can your holiday make you younger?

TRAVEL

After the hedonism of the holidays, Gemma Taylor travels to India to seek ancient healing for modern problems. Her task? To see if a detox programme claiming heightened mental clarity can cure her creative block and turn back the clock

W

ith a good job, car and mortgage, I am ostensibly winning at life, so why do I feel exhausted and look like a candidate for 10 Years Younger? Grey from stress, round from turkey and bloated with alcohol, plans for finishing my book seem as laughable as plans for 2016’s bikini body. I did ‘dry’ January last year and all it did was give me a hangover on 1 February. I needed an escape from the rat race that would give me results, so when a friend suggested I book myself onto the Detox Detour programme at the Alila Diwa Goa, my scepticism made me scoff, but my desperation saw me on the first Première Jet Airways flight to India. Eight years in the making, this programme is the brainchild of Dr Arjita Kumari. With a Bachelor’s degree in Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery, Kumari is also a qualified sivananda yoga teacher, hypnotherapist, Ayurvedic dietitian, and skilled in Pranic healing. As a result, she’s poured all of her knowledge into honing a holistic detox that can encourage weight loss and provide a greater sense of peace, clarity, focus, concentration and memory. I’ve never been one for wheatgrass shots, but the comforting heat and lush landscape of the Arabian coast is a draw in itself. Alila Diwa is no ordinary five-star hotel. Designed to inspire, everything from its crystalclear infinity pool to the raised floor-to-ceiling glass-walled yoga studio surrounded by palm trees and exotic birds, makes it feel more like you are on the set of a Bond film than at a spa. Upon arrival, a traditional Indian thali meal awaits me and Kumari explains what will happen during my stay. Taking all my fat, muscle and

water retention measurements using a body composite analysis (BCA) machine, which collects data using a low-voltage electric current, guests are given individual goals: the corresponding detox process sounds terrifying, but I’m keen to see the promised results. I start every day with one of four juices, consisting of psyllium husk, and lemon tea to cleanse my intestines. Kumari only has one or two people undertaking the programme at any one time, to focus her attentions. The daily menu consists of a fresh salad for lunch and soup and roasted vegetables for dinner. There is not a prepackaged sandwich in sight. I haven’t eaten this healthily for a long time, but it’s manageable.

“Kumari has poured all her knowledge into honing a holistic detox” My yoga instructor pushes me to the limits of flexibility and the personal trainer takes no prisoners in the weights room. After each fitness session is spa treatments, which take the form of accomplished hour-long massages to relax the weary muscles and clear my mind. Despite this lifestyle overhaul, within a day I develop flu-like symptoms. Apparently, the Herxheimer Reaction is extremely common during a cleanse and is a sign that my immune system is responding to toxins that have built up from pollution and processed foods and that are now being released from cells, tissues, joints and muscles. What sets this regime apart from your regular health boot camp is the holistic inclusion of therapy for the mind. Smokers, dieters and those

suffering from anxiety or depression, all report to have transformative experiences due to this approach. I thought my ailment was creative block but through an art therapy session it was revealed to me that this could be linked to negative ways in which I saw myself. A confident person, I was surprised at the emotions and feelings that came to the surface and was starting to consider the hypnotherapy session with a new found curiosity. Before being hypnotised, I had a meditation workshop. I was aware of the benefits of mindfulness, but had never experienced the lifechanging effects its practitioners evangelise. Kumari’s meditation workshop is unique in that she has a guided recording taken from the deceased father of Pranik healing, Choa Kok Sui, whom Kumari trained under. Choa Kok Sui’s healing Twin Hearts meditation cannot be found online and is extremely powerful. Using guided visualisation techniques, I experience a glow flowing through me into the ground. I don’t know whether it is the new light feeling in my toned, carb-and meat-free body, but I have no problem then falling into a state of deep relaxation alongside Kumari, whose experience I now trust implicitly. I promise I won’t try and analyse anything during the hypnosis and Kumari takes me on a tour of my subconscious and a past life, which is the closest I’ve ever come to a psychedelic experience. Emotionally I feel calm and rejuvenated, and before I leave, my final body scan shows a physical improvement. In just five days, I have lowered my resting metabolism, meaning I require less calories, reduced my total body fat by two per cent and gained a shiny new biological age of four years younger. Back in England, it’s apparent that some other changes have also been made. My house is now full to bursting with fresh fruit and vegetables, finally breaking my bad habit of ready meals. I am embracing new recipes and spending the time and money on my nutrition that it deserves. Friends and family have all commented on my markedly shinier hair and glowing skin, but it’s my outlook and general demeanour that seem most improved. Surprising myself, I have continued with a daily meditation, and am now filled with an intuitive compassion towards everyone, even when on the tube, which is surely a modern-day miracle. Swiss Precision

C

hances are, you’ve never heard of Andermatt. One hundred years ago, this charming little town in the very heart of Switzerland was very popular with British skiers. However, at the mercy of heavy snowfall, it was eventually left to its own devices as a garrison town. However, this is beginning to change thanks to an extensive lift development project and the arrival of The Chedi, a huge 56,000m2 hotel. We arrive at night, and it’s clear that its design is sympathetic to the chocolate-box perfection of the

surrounding area – all warm lighting and classic Chalet style; there’s large slabs of granite with oak beams, a gently sloping roof and wide eaves. My room follows in the same tone with sliding doors, a super-kingsized bed and an in-and-out fire, warming both the room and the balcony, giving each a pleasing, come-in-from-the-cold feel that is much appreciated when temperatures hover around -6 degrees. Everything is controlled by iPad – utter bliss after a day on the slopes. The restaurant is elegant and chic, with four open kitchens and a five-metre-high glass cheese cellar, but

it’s the spa that is particularly grand – 2,400 square metres of wellness, comprising a vast 35m indoor and 12m outdoor pool, surrounded by double daybeds, a cocooning hydrotherapy suite, bio and Finnish saunas and even an organic steam bath. It’s ideal for both skiers and non-skiers, the former reaping the restorative benefits and the latter unable to get bored during the long days of abandonment. There’s no Folie Douce here, no Monclear and Cartier-filled shops lining the local village. But it’s Andermatt’s central position that has marked it out as one of the best places to go, with an average of 9.5m of snow each winter and 60km of piste, split between a relatively tiny number of tourists. The nearby Gemsstock mountain is north-facing, so the snow stays in peak condition, and there is a cable car that runs all the way to the top. There is a good black run – the B.Russi – while those who want to go off-piste can fly off the untracked

run that zips around the vast back of Gemsstock, taking in the panoramic views below. For those who aren’t ready to brave all 2,961 metres of this mountain – and I am one of them – there is a quaint red train that stops just over the road from The Chedi that will transport you, in chugging, Heidi-style, to the ski-lifts of the gentler Nätschen, for more manageable runs. In the town itself there are a couple of great local places to venture – the Pinte Musikbar bar, or the family-owned Ochsen, for a kirsch-soaked fondue (a local delicacy and absolutely lethal). It’s the ideal mix of the quaint cobble-stoned tradition of Andermatt with the all-out opulence of The Chedi. Just don’t tell everyone, let’s leave the royal spares in Verbier for now. Most significantly consumers are shown to have more faith in the model, with 43 per cent of buyers of the new iPhone models conducting no research before buying the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus in 2015, compared to 37 per cent who bought the same models last year. In terms of purchase drivers behind the iPhone, priorities have shifted from long-term evolution to size of the screen. Camera quality is also important. kantarworldpanel.com; apple.com/uk

Background checks on employees made mandatory

LEGAL issues W

ith responsibility falling firmly on employers to check for convictions and approve employees undertaking significant roles in banks, could there be an upturn in employees failing to achieve or maintain regulatory approval due to misconduct in their personal lives? The new Senior Managers and Certification Regime (SM&CR) will come into operation this March. Initially, it will affect banks and similar businesses but later it will be rolled out to all businesses working in financial services. While the regime for approval may be changing, the FCA’s Fit and Proper Test will continue to be used in a slightly amended form to assess and approve employees who undertake key roles. Under the SM&CR only Senior Managers will need to be approved directly by the FCA. Employees presently designated “Approved Persons” by the FCA will instead be assessed and designated “Certified Persons” by their employer. Employers must ensure they have procedures in place to assess the fitness and

propriety of employees. They must inform themselves of relevant matters including checking for convictions for criminal offences. The Fit and Proper Test involves consideration of factors relevant to an employee’s competence capability, financial soundness and also their honesty, integrity and reputation. Any conviction, however minor, may be relevant especially if it reveals a lack of personal integrity or honesty or if the person’s conduct during the investigation is questionable, or the investigation reveals a dependence on alcohol or drugs. Investigations and criminal proceedings falling short of conviction may also be perceived as relevant depending on the circumstances. With this in mind, a criminal investigation of any nature may jeopardise the career of an employee working in financial services. It is therefore vital that anyone under criminal investigation has legal advice from a specialist solicitor as soon as possible. A solicitor will protect and advance your rights. They are a human face with specialist knowledge and an objective view when you may be feeling stressed, confused,

under pressure or on the back foot. They will speak to the police about the allegation and evidence and advise you before any interview whether to answer questions and what facts are important to mention. They can be on the spot in the interview to look out for inappropriate methods of questioning and for further consultation. After the interview they will help you prepare a cogent defence with supporting evidence. For less serious matters they may be able to argue that prosecution is not in the public interest or negotiate an alternative to a formal charge such as a community resolution, caution or civil or fixed penalty. Skilled legal representation for individuals involved in criminal investigations can make a significant difference to the outcome of the proceedings as well as future career and travel. If you would like to discuss any of the issues above in more detail, please contact our team at crimeandfraud@bindmans.com or call 0207 014 2120.

Evoquing the right response With its stylish new look, the baby Range Rover is even better than before, says Matthew Carter

Y

ou’d be hard-pressed to find a better example of the law of Sod. As this is written, much of the country is covered in snow with the white stuff even reaching the outskirts of London. And given the amount of hot air produced in the capital, that’s some achievement. It’s perfect weather, in other words, for a fourwheel drive vehicle. And as the annual family ski trip to the Alps is the only time most urban 4x4s get to justify the extra cost, weight and complexity of an all-wheel drive chassis, a dusting of snow at home is an added bonus. Sod’s law, however, means that the Range Rover Evoque I’ve had on test went back to its maker last week, at the end of a spell the experts have called the warmest winter on record. What follows, then, is not a report on the unbelievable ability of the Evoque in treacherous conditions, though I know of old that it will

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

go just about anywhere, as anyone who has undertaken one of the highly recommended Land Rover Experience days will confirm. Instead this will be a report on a week in the life of a typical London-based Evoque where the closest one ever comes to going off-piste is parking on the pavement. As an example of a brilliant marketing campaign, there’s little to better the launch of the Range Rover Evoque. It arrived at the end of 2011 as a car no one needed but everyone bought: you’ll find at least one example in every London side street, it seems. Mixing traditional Land Rover capability with the looks of the Range Rover Sport in a compact package better suited for the city, Evoque had concept car looks (especially in three-door form – and to hell with the lack of headroom in the rear) and a slightly more affordable price tag. And it hit the spot immediately, quickly

MOTORING

becoming the best seller from Land Rover. And now, three and a bit years down the line, it’s time for a refresh. The result? The best gets better. Although there are no sheet metal changes, the latest Evoque does have a different look thanks to new bumpers, a new grille, deeper air vents at the front topped by LED fog lamps and headlights with stylish running lights.

“It arrived at the end of 2011 as a car no one needed but everyone bought” There’s a broader colour palette and a host of contrasting colour options – the test car was red with a black roof, wheel arches and lower bumpers. The badging was also black, as were the 19-inch alloy wheels. Not especially discrete, then. The most significant changes, though, come

inside and under the skin. The interior features new, more upmarket materials, with satin-brushed aluminium inserts complementing greater colour choices along with a revised dashboard and new eight-inch touch screen information panel. Mechanical changes are more comprehensive. A nine-speed (count ’em) automatic gearbox was introduced last year and this is now mated to the biggest changes made yet to the Evoque, a new engine and revised chassis. It’s the engine that makes all the difference. Newly developed by Jaguar Land Rover and used in Jaguar XE and XF models as well as Land Rover and Range Rover, the four-cylinder Ingenium engine fitted to ‘my’ Evoque has utterly transformed the car. Engineered and built in the UK, the 2.0-litre diesel is available in two states of tune developing either 150hp or 180hp. It is lighter, more powerful, smoother and – here’s the important bit – more

CANARY WHARF | 91

efficient than the Ford engine used before. Although nominally the same as the unit in the Jag saloons, for Evoque the engine has been extensively modified to ensure that the car can do what all Land Rovers can do: that is, wade through rivers, drive along at ridiculous angles and, indeed, climb every mountain in Sound of Music fashion. More prosaically, the 180hp version will top 121mph, sprint to 60mph in less than nine seconds yet still better 55mpg if you’re careful. Chassis changes include modified suspension mounts, revised settings to compensate for the lighter weight of the engine and new brakes. Although you can buy a two-wheel drive version

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

of the Evoque (why would you?) it’s the all-wheel drive versions that really allow the car to show its genuine Land Rover heritage. What Land Rover calls the Active Driveline uses advanced electronics to deliver the engine’s power to the wheels that conditions dictate need it most. In everyday driving, power goes to the front wheels but the moment a touch of wheel spin is detected, power is sent to all four wheels – the shift from two to four-wheel drive takes 350 milliseconds. The system also includes Torque Vectoring, which automatically shifts power to an individual rear wheel if the opposing wheel has lost all grip. All of which means that the Evoque really can handle the gloopiest mud you’ll find off road or the

MOTORING

most slippery snow you’ll encounter on road. There are also scores of other electronic gizmos designed to make life safer, easier and more comfortable. Satellite navigation now has voice recognition, while the car has autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping technology and, of course, Land Rover’s All-Terrain Control. For off-road use, the latter allows the driver to turn a dial to suit the conditions ahead, leaving the electronics to pick the ideal chassis and drivetrain settings needed. All the driver has to do is steer. Other standard features of HSE Dynamic trim – one of five offerings and one below the top Autobiography level – include electric memory

familiarity would cure, no doubt. Of the options on the test car, I wouldn’t bother with the £2,000 Black Pack, but I would spend £1,000 on the superb Head Up Display. That lot will leave little change from £50k, which some might consider strong for a compact SUV. But this is no ordinary car. It’s a highly desirable machine that marries ample style with real substance – even if the chances to exploit its full abilities won’t happen very often. But here’s a thing: although I reckoned noone really needed the Evoque – the Land Rover Discovery Sport (and its Freelander predecessor) is just as capable and offers more interior space and

“In everyday use, then, the Evoque is an impressive machine. It is supremely comfortable, quiet and refined” seats, full leather trim, rear parking camera, configurable ambient interior lighting and a fixed, full-length panoramic glass roof. Also new is what Land Rover calls a Gesture Tailgate. Providing you have the key in your pocket, if you approach the car loaded down with shopping and waggle your foot under the rear bumper, the tailgate opens automatically. Don’t try to bung too much in there, though, it’s far from the largest boot around. In everyday use, then, the Evoque is an impressive machine. It is supremely comfortable, quiet and refined. It handles well – better than before, in fact, thanks to having less weight over the front end – and should be even more economical to run than before. The only small criticism is that engine pick-up from low revs isn’t as instant as it could be. Pulling away from a roundabout or junction, when you invariably need a rapid response to fill a gap, can be a bit heart in mouth. It’s something that great

practicality – it has sold like lottery tickets for a quindecuple rollover draw. So I got that wrong. And that means I’m not going to make rash declarations about the next variation on the Evoque theme – a convertible version that goes on sale later this year. Who needs a soft-top offroader of all things? Lots of people, no doubt.

CANARY WHARF GROUP SPONSORS COMMUNITY EXHIBITION ON POPLAR DLR FOOTBRIDGE Canary Wharf Group recently sponsored SPLASH Art’s (South Poplar and Limehouse Action for Secure Housing) brand new exhibition on the Poplar DLR Footbridge, alongside TfL and the East End Community Foundation. Led by David Bratby, the SPLASH Arts Team has worked with over 350 adults and children across the local Community in Poplar, Tower Hamlets College, Crossrail and Canary Wharf to develop the new art installation on the glass DLR Bridge at Poplar station. Artists Karine Gullino, Laura Napier and Anita Ellis ran sessions, with Wylfried Tondelier combining the pieces together to create the final exhibition highlighting the Docklands strong maritime heritage. Four maps of historical trade routes were brought to life in the final pieces, illustrating the ships, cargos and people who made this area what it is today.

ST SAVIOURS SITE VISIT TO CANARY WHARF Canary Wharf contractors were delighted to participate in a local community project at St. Saviour’s School in Poplar, East London. Employees from the Newfoundland project joined other clients and contractors from Clifford Chance to help transform the school’s existing outside area into an exciting garden and playground. Over three days, the project team undertook various groundworks, planted trees and built raised flowerbeds, a shed and a greenhouse. The school children, teachers and classroom assistants from St. Saviour’s were all invited back to Canary Wharf, where they visited the construction site and the Canary Wharf Group marketing suite. The visit provided the children with an educational and hopefully inspirational insight into the construction industry and history of Canary Wharf, a district just over 1km from their classroom.

CANARY WHARF’S WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION 2016 As part of the Canary Wharf Group Wildlife Photography Competition, employees, tenants, visitors and those in the community were invited to photograph the diversity of flora and fauna at the Estate. The shortlisted entries have been displayed in Adam’s Plaza Bridge, with the announcement of the final winners taking place in February. Each winner will receive a £100 Canary Wharf shopping voucher, with the overall competition winner winning an extra £100 Canary Wharf shopping voucher.

Nathaniel Rackowe: The Luminous City

UNTIL 12 February Lobby, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf Open daily / FREE

Nathaniel Rackowe uses industrial materials such as fluorescent tubing, breeze blocks and bitumen in installations that examine the interplay of light and structure in the built environment. His architectural forms, uncompromisingly minimal, have the raw beauty of shafts of streetlight falling on wet pavements, or the moment of sunset in the urban landscape. If structure is the starting point then light and movement are the means by which the artist explores his raw materials.

The exhibition includes (Un)Touched, his first collaborative work, which was conceived with choreographer Angela Woodhouse and funded by Arts Council England and Middlesex University. Part sculpture/part performance, Nathaniel’s steel and glass structure provides a base around which two dancers – Stine Nilsen and Martina Conti – move, their bodies playing with symmetry and touch. Developed in rehearsals throughout the exhibition, the 20-minute dance performance will premiere on Tuesday 9 February, at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm. FREE The exhibition is curated by House of the Nobleman rackowe.com; houseofthenobleman.com

Quest: Sculptural Ceramics by Alexander MacdonaldBuchanan 22 February – 15 April Lobby, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf Open daily / FREE

Alexander Macdonald-Buchanan’s title for the collection of works showing in One Canada Square is Quest, which reflects his journey from conception to completion of his first group of sculptural ceramics. Initially exhibited in the autumn of 2015 at the Inner Court of the Duke of Devonshire’s Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, this exhibition marks their London debut. Combining scale and subtlety, dynamism and reflection, among the works on show are a series entitled Energy, four spiralling towers of an intense matt blue; and five tall ribbed vessels in a range of pale hues, collectively titled Contemplation, which stand as high as the artist’s shoulder. alexandermb.co.uk

e r a S RD I B A HOND The late Soichiro Honda created an empire best known for cars and motorbikes, but now, his childhood dream of taking the company airborne has been realised, in the form of a luxury private jet WORDS: richard yarrow

n 1917 in Japan, an 11-year-old boy called Soichiro stole a bicycle and some money from his father, then set off to ride almost 15 miles on his own. He desperately wanted to see a visiting bi-plane make an aerobatic demonstration flight, but when he arrived at the airfield he realised the price of admission was more than he could afford. The story goes that he climbed a tree to watch the action, and that was enough to have him hooked on engineering – and particularly on the idea of flight – for the rest of his life. The boy was Soichiro Honda and he went on to create the global personal transport company that still bears his name. In later years, financial security meant he could gain his pilot’s licence and he still flew regularly aged into his 70s. In 1986, his long-standing dream to produce his own aircraft led Honda to give the green light to initial research into developing a small aircraft powered by two jet engines. But Soichiro Honda wanted to innovate, not follow the crowd. So exactly 30 years after those first investigations – and almost exactly a century

after he saw that early pioneering flight – the fruits of his labours are here. The result is the HondaJet, the world’s newest executive aeroplane and the fastest, highest-flying, quietest and most fuelefficient model of its size on the market. The only unfortunate element of the story is that Soichiro Honda died in 1991, so never saw his vision take to the skies. The business best known for its cars, motorbikes engines and power equipment has established a new division, the Honda Aircraft Company (HAC). It’s not based in its native Japan, but in Greensboro, North Carolina. The city, close to the east coast of the USA, is just 250 miles from where the Wright brothers invented powered flight in 1903. HAC has built a factory, pilot training centre and customer service facility there, and established a bespoke dealer network in North America, South America and Europe. More than 1,700 people now work for the company and early last December the HondaJet – or HA-420, to give it its actual model name – received final approval from America’s Federal Aviation Administration. Two days before Christmas the first complete customer

“The plane is aimed at wealthy business entrepreneurs, as well as stars from the worlds of music, film and sport”

aerooplane was ready for delivery – a $4.5million (approximately £3.1 million) festive gift that undoubtedly put a smile on someone’s face. “We are very excited to commence deliveries of the HondaJet, fulfilling Honda’s commitment to advancing human mobility through innovation,” said Michimasa Fujino, CEO of HAC, as the aeroplane left the factory. “We have now extended this commitment skyward with the delivery of our first aircraft, and I hope we soon will begin to see many HondaJets at airports around the world.” The aeroplane is aimed at wealthy business entrepreneurs, as well as stars from the worlds of music, film and sport. Some of them already fly their own aircraft, though it’s likely the advanced technology of the HondaJet will encourage others to train to receive a private pilot’s licence. Companies with a requirement to fly senior executives around at short notice are also likely to be customers. A fraction under 13 metres from end to end, the HondaJet has everything today’s private flyer requires. There are four fully adjustable seats – two facing forwards, two going backwards – plus an optional side-facing fifth seat between them. There’s a bathroom cubicle at the rear, and the plane has combined stowage space of 66ft 3in, the majority of which is also at the back. Customers can choose from a variety of personalisation options on their HondaJet. For example, the exterior of the plane can be finished at the factory with red, yellow, blue, green or silver detailing, and there is the choice of grey or beige for the cabin. Another option is technology that allows the HondaJet cabin’s audio, lighting, temperature and electrochromatic window shades

to be controlled by passengers using their own mobile device. However, at the heart of the HondaJet’s list of technical innovations is the unique configuration of its two turbofan jet engines. Located above the wing, this dramatically improves performance and fuel efficiency by reducing aerodynamic drag while maximising cabin space. Other benefits from the layout include reduced cabin sound and less ground-detectable noise. The bodyshell is made from a lightweight composite material, rather than the traditional aluminium. The result is an aeroplane that has a maximum speed of 483mph at 30,000ft, and a maximum cruise altitude of 43,000ft. Its usable range is 1,350 miles, which means a trip from London to most places this side of Moscow is achievable, without a stop-over. The pilot and co-pilot are also comfortable. They get state-of-the-art touch-screen instruments, with more space and better visibility than on many existing aeroplanes of this type. The company is hoping to deliver a handful of completed planes every month during 2016, with the order book already reported to be into three figures. There’s no information on delivery time, though it’s obviously going to be several months. So is the HondaJet a one-off product, a vanity project which has finally brought an 11-year-old boy’s dream to life? Or is this just the first of a range of aeroplanes of different sizes to cater for the luxury travel sector? The company is unwilling to comment, but time will tell. hondajet.com

n a year that had already seen a radical overhaul in stamp duty, the end of November saw a second stamp duty increase for buy-to-let investors and second-home buyers. The new measure is an attempt by George Osborne to address concerns surrounding affordability and house price inflation but raises further questions over the affect that this will have on tax revenues at a time when the market was starting to find its feet after the previous increase. The latest proposals are still subject to a period of consultation, however it means that buyers of second homes whether for investment or otherwise, will pay an extra three per cent in stamp duty from April. It is still too early to tell the effect that this is going to have on the market in the first quarter; however, it is likely to produce an upturn in activity as buyers scramble to secure a property before the new rates kick in.

“Only time will tell how the most recent stamp duty changes will affect the market in the coming months” Whilst the first raft of changes in stamp duty dampened transaction levels across central London, the sub-£2million market remained extremely buoyant, outperforming the rest of prime London in the second half of 2015. The higher rate of stamp duty announced in November would add £30,000 to the current stamp duty rate for a second-home buyer of a £1million property. However, at current growth levels in this sector, this sum would be matched by house price inflation in less than a year. Only time will tell how the most recent stamp duty changes will affect the market in the coming months. What we do know is that we’re likely to be in for an interesting first quarter in the run up to the start of the new tax year.

manager at Knight Frank Islington, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market

H

aving worked within the Islington lettings market for many years, I have always felt comfortable predicting the market month to month. My knowledge and experience were put to the test last year with the market becoming tougher and more unpredictable. Typically when the sales market is static, the lettings market is busy; however in 2015 both markets were challenging. With 2015 behind us, January has started well and we have been busy dealing with high levels of corporate relocation in every price range of the market and are looking forward to a busy 2016. Prime properties (properties priced above £1,000 per week) have seen the largest increase in activity, with many of the houses

“Typically when the sales market is static lettings is busy” that were sat on the market in the run up to Christmas attracting multiple offers in January. Outside of the summer months, January has always been a strong month with people reassessing their lives and making changes, whether it be relocating with work or moving in with a partner. Looking ahead to the first quarter, we have a strong sense that with the changes in stamp duty announced by the Chancellor in November, namely the additional three per cent stamp duty that is to be levied on purchases of additional properties, such as buy-to-lets from 1 April, many landlords will undoubtedly look to complete their purchases before this date. In turn, there may be an increase in letting stock, but with an increase in relocation activity we hope that this will balance out. Beyond this, predicting the remainder of 2016 is difficult, however with a positive medium to long-term outlook for the UK economy, relocation activity should remain high, keeping upwards pressure on rental values and shaping 2016 into a successful year for lettings.

STATE OF THE MARKET SPRING SURGE JASON TAYLOR, sales director at Franklyn James Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

A

s predicted, the buy-tolet rush has begun. Our offices in east London have recently seen a surge in activity from landlords wishing to purchase further investment properties before the stamp duty hike in April. Unusually, we are also seeing buyers wanting to take properties on with existing tenants in situ, in order to speed up the process. Lettings have also had a great start to the year. Many tenants who were postponing their search until the end of the festive period are now making decisions very quickly and snapping up properties as soon as they come onto the market. George Osborne has suggested that interest rates may rise as early as this year. This will undoubtedly create some urgency amongst those buyers keen to secure an attractive mortgage product before lenders start to increase their rates. Listings of new properties still remain low for this time of year but with the spring market on the horizon, there is a feel good factor which will certainly spur on sellers and buyers to make those life-changing decisions. E16 in particular will see some dramatic changes this year with the first and second phases of Royal Wharf completing, giving Silvertown the facelift it deserves. If you are thinking of selling or letting your property, please call into one of our four offices and we will be happy to give you some friendly advice on what the market is doing in your area.

THE RIGHT REPRESENTATION ALASDAIR CARPENTER, managing director of Lourdes Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

N

ot all agents are created equal. There is a public misconception that it really does not matter who you instruct to sell your property. For many, the two main considerations when choosing an estate agent are – the highest price an agent is prepared to market the property for and the lowest fee an agent will charge for their services. However, when you are employing the services of an estate agent to negotiate the best possible terms on the sale of – in most cases – your most expensive asset – why would you trust the agent that cannot secure a good fee for themselves to negotiate a market leading price for you? A good London estate agent will have a detailed marketing plan in place for each and every one of the properties they are instructed to sell. It is a well-documented fact that many buyers in London come from outside of the UK, so rather than concentrating on the relatively small variations in the agent’s fee, why not look at the wider picture of who it is you are employing and what it is they can offer you. Is the cheapest agent marketing your asset to a global market place? Does your agent fully understand what they are selling? Have they the necessary experience to sell a property such as yours? Any agent can take a few badly produced pictures on their digital camera and upload them to a variety of internet portals. Will your agent utilise professional photos and floor plans, will they provide advice on dressing the apartment for sale, will they release the details to a network of partner agents throughout the world and will they introduce the property to buying agents? Should the property be unusual or likely to attract the attention of multiple buyers, will your agent use ‘open houses’ or other methods of sale such as informal tender? Without a doubt, the internet is a powerful tool when it comes to selling homes in the capital yet localised marketing through magazines, newspapers and window displays is also important. Choosing the right agent for your property could increase the value substantially so before you sign on the dotted line – do your homework.

AGENT FOCUS: HURFORD SALVI CARR A Pocket Of Potential Alex Myles explains why Hurford Salvi Carr’s new Aldgate office is showing plenty of promise

I

n 2007, the City of London Corporation began the regeneration of Aldgate, an area of London that today is almost unrecognisable. Alex Myles, branch manager at the new Hurford Salvi Carr Aldgate office, said for this reason, having an office in the area was something Hurford Salvi Carr had on its mind for some time: “We knew Aldgate was going to be changing massively, and we wanted to have a prime location in the area.” It seems they’ve been successful in securing one too, calling the ground floor of the Altitude building, home. This year Hurford Salvi Carr celebrates a successful 20 years in the business, and the Aldgate branch is certainly reaping the rewards of the existing business: “We work a lot on recommendations and referrals, so a lot of the walk-ins and calls we’ve had are from people who know the company,” explains Myles. We’re told at this point in time, the clientele has been varied, however, currently a lot of the business has been buy-to-let investors looking to do a deal before April, and young City professionals looking for property to buy

and live in. They are however anticipating increasing interest from tenants as more of the developments approach the final stages of completion. “I think the high specifications and facilities that these developments offer are something that tenants are very attracted to. Perhaps they’re paying higher rents, but they

investing in,” he adds. And why Aldgate? “You’ve got good access to Tower Bridge, Borough Market, Brick Lane, Spitalfields and top name restaurants like SUSHISAMBA, so there’s a lot to do.” The Aldgate office services Spitalfields, Brick Lane, City East, down to Tower Hill, into Wapping

“I think the high specifications and facilities that these developments offer are something that tenants are very attracted to” get a lifestyle alongside the property they’re renting,” says Myles. For many, the facilities include a gymnasium, sauna, steam room, spin rooms and at Goodman’s Fields, an amazing cinema room. Facilities aside, Myles believes the location itself will attract both buy-to-let investors and owner/occupiers, especially those City workers looking for close proximity to the office. Myles’ advice to potential vendors is: “If you’ve had a property for a while and you’re thinking about selling, now is a good time, especially if you want to hit the buy-to-let investors before the April tax comes into place.” Equally, for landlords, “it’s a good location to start

and then everything central to Aldgate as well. So if you are looking to relocate or invest in the area, Hurford Salvi Carr pride itself on offering exceptional customer service: ““It’s all about attentive service, professionalism and expertise. We all come from various backgrounds, I used to manage restaurants for about ten years, so I’ve got that built in me and I know a lot of people within the company are the same. We like creating a rapport with the vendors and buyers as well, and we like retained business. We like people to recommend us and then come back to us.” hurford-salvi-carr.co.uk

INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO

Waterside Living As many areas of London – particularly the east end – become increasingly built up, developments with a connection to nature may just have the upper hand. Whether it’s a riverside community or being a stone’s throw from the lake in London’s oldest public park, these three developments’ proximity to nature adds potential value

Bow River Village A brand new community is taking shape and launches this February on the banks of the River Lea. The buildings which make up Bow River Village, with steel balustrades, elegant brickwork, timber decking and generously proportioned windows, reflect the area’s industrial heritage, yet this part of London has now evolved to attract creative industries such as the Bow Arts’ Trust and 3 Mills Studios. The development consists of 92 one, two and three bedroom apartments and two bedroom duplexes, many looking straight out onto the water. The interiors boast high quality craftsmanship,

streamlined kitchens with Neff and Zanussi appliances and impressive bathrooms fitted out by Grohe and Roca. Outside are landscaped courtyards and splashes of green space while every apartment has its own balcony or terrace – private havens to enjoy the tranquillity of the riverside location – which nonetheless is well-connected. Bromley-by-Bow station offers District Line access into central London and the A12 is also nearby.

Regent Apartments

Set within the tranquil canalside setting of Wenlock Basin, a collection of luxury one, two, three and four bedroom apartments and duplexes are currently available at Regent Apartments. Now over 70 per cent sold, the development – a short walk from Angel and Old Street stations and within easy reach of the thriving creative and financial districts of Shoreditch and the City – is particularly appealing to professionals.

Selected apartments offer a more flexible living space thanks to internal sliding pocket doors. These allow residents to utilise the living area as a large and open plan entertaining space or divide into more intimate areas when desired. With great attention to detail in the design, apartments incorporate chic handle-less fitted kitchens with a range of superior branded integrated appliances, under floor heating and luxury bathrooms complete with large

illuminated mirror cabinets. The Platinum Collection apartments have the added benefit of smart home technology; music, heating, lights and blinds can be controlled via LCD touch panels or a smart device. Floor to ceiling windows allow light to flood the apartments and provide enviable views of London’s skyline, which can also be enjoyed from the spacious terraces.

Victoria Park Collection In the heart of Victoria Park Village and just a block away from the historic 200 acre Victoria Park, three large, elegant townhouses are still available within the Victoria Park Collection development. As well as access to the large park and its boating lake and tennis courts, each property also benefits from private outdoor courtyard space and the local village feel of the surrounding area extends to the array of independent boutiques and pubs.

Moving indoors, the properties’ interiors follow particularly high specifications with solid oak staircases, bespoke engineered oak flooring and a digital heating and hot water control system with wifi to enable remote iPhone operation. Bathrooms offer freestanding Stonekast baths and wallmounted cascade taps while kitchens will feature Siemens appliances, German high gloss finish cabinets and stone worktops.
