ENGINEERED FOR MEN WHO KNOW THAT THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE COMPLICATED.

Portuguese Perpetual Calendar Ref. 5023: You don’t need to walk on the surface of the moon to succumb to its fascination; after all, its effects are omnipresent here on earth. Its gravitational pull causes the rise and fall of the tides. Its appearance and disappearance mark the end and the beginning of each day. And wonders of all kinds have been ascribed to the full moon for as long as anyone can remember. These qualities were the inspiration for the master watch-

makers at IWC who developed the Portuguese Perpetual Calendar. The 18-carat red gold case houses an impressive automatic movement with a perpetual calendar and perpetual moon phase display, countdown to the next full moon and a Pellaton automatic winding system, to mention only the most sophisticated of its complications. Needless to say, it runs with the same unerring precision as the moon in its orbit around our planet. IWC . E N G I N E E R E D FO R M E N .

EDITOR’S LETTER

From the

editor “My New Year’s resolution is to stop hanging out with people who ask me about my New Year’s resolutions”

W

hether you find the inevitable ‘New Year, New You’ suggestion a wonderful and much-needed opportunity for redemption or a tedious exercise in the power of collective delusion, there’s no denying that the start of a new year offers at least the chance of a fresh start wherever you feel the need for one. Eaten too much this year? Used your gym card as an on-the-go butter knife since February? Burned your bridges with half the company after the Christmas party? Well fear not, January is a blank page and at this precise moment, 2015 contains nothing but possibilities. To that end, we bring you an inspirational, results-driven issue, centred around the all the great and wonderful things that this year could hold for you. We have chased down the experts in various fields from nutrition to style, who have shared their top tips for life – from getting in shape and lowering stress, to dressing better and even how to order wine (page 76). We have also scoured all of London for the top beauty experts, treatments and products so that you can spend the next year taking Selfies (page 64). Just think, this time next year you could be fitter, healthier, stronger. You could be promoted or engaged. You could be the author of your destiny! Or you could just ignore all of our advice and simply end up a year older, but that’s your call. My resolution is to be less cynical. It probably won’t work though. Happy New Year everyone!

JEWELLERY

Jewels, gems, pearls and diamonds; essential components of any jewellery collection WORDS: OLIVIA SHARPE

Collection IV

 Independent Woman Despite having only recently joined the company as head jewellery designer, Lucrezia Buccellati has already made quite an impact, launching a series of rebranding initiatives to make the family-owned, Italian heritage jeweller appeal to a younger generation. Along with a redesigned logo and a line of bejewelled iPad and iPhone covers, Buccellati is in the midst of releasing a series of short films, each featuring one of the brand’s female ‘muses’. The first includes fashion designer Marta Ferri, while the second stars president of Spanish fashion brand Delpozo, Indre Rockefeller. The third muse has not yet been unveiled but we can be sure that she will share with her contemporaries a love of Buccellati, a sense of timeless style and youthful ambition. Along with this, the brand has also just launched a range of more affordable jewellery pieces, starting from £2,000. buccellati.com

Cutting Edge  Noudar Jewels and its exclusive new collection recently arrived in Harrods Luxury Jewellery room. Comprising an assortment of ring sets and finger bracelets inspired by Islamic and Arabic cultures, the eclectic range remains signature to the brand. Designer Noor Al Fardan comments:

“The second collection is an edgier and a more daring version of the previous collection; holding onto Noudar’s unique essence, focusing mainly on rings and earrings, taking inspiration from Arabic heritage” - Noor Al Fardan

Rising star Lily Elia has launched a new 10-piece collection for her eponymous brand, Lily Gabriella. The jeweller has looked back to fond childhood memories of holidays in Brazil, creating a range of jewellery pieces which marry the natural and the sculptural, featuring smooth, undulating lines and never-ending circles that conjure up images of rolling clouds and rippling waters. Full finger rings with blue sapphire pavé possess an almost talismanic quality, shielding the wearer like armour. Collection IV, from £8,190 lilygabriella.com

Scale the Heights Swiss jeweller Shawish Genève has landed in London and the contemporary design of this flagship boutique is in keeping with the brand’s visionary aesthetic. Known for creating high jewellery pieces which combine traditional techniques with technology, one of Shawish’s biggest claims to fame is designing the world’s first all-diamond ring, cut from one diamond weighing 150 carats. Bright young things

As we ring in the New Year, Olivia Sharpe speaks to the rising female stars who are changing the face of the luxury jewellery industry

Lily Kamper Q. What are your biggest inspirations? A: My collections evolve from many different things: furniture, natural materials and architecture. The S/S15 collection I launched last Fashion Week was heavily influenced by an architect called Ricardo Bofill. He designs brightly coloured, geometric buildings. I was also heavily influenced by Art Deco cinema lobbies and old black-and-white films. Q. what is the Biggest highlight of your career? A: Vogue coming to interview me in my studio. That was pretty insane. The Vogue Talents Corner was also amazing because I presented my work to Anna Wintour. She was very complimentary. Q. Last naughty purchase? A: I got married this summer and we each bought NIKEiD trainers; I wore white trainers with a black

Images: S/S15 Collection

tick and he had black ones with a white tick. Both pairs had our initials on them. Q. What jewellery did you wear on the day? A: A friend of mine, Ryan Storer (a jewellery designer I met when we were both in Milan) sent me a couple of ear cuffs which were beautiful. Q. What’s something that’s not commonly known about you? A: I hate coriander. It’s my nemesis. When I go to a restaurant I have to pretend I’m allergic. Q. Favourite piece of jewellery you own? A: I have a really weird ring that my grandma gave me which is completely the opposite of my taste. It’s a garnet ring that’s half rose gold and half yellow gold. It’s very bizarre because I can’t understand why anyone would have repaired it using two different metals but I can’t help but love it. Q. What have you got in the pipeline for this year? A: I’m working on an exciting collaboration with GlobeTrotter which will be unveiled in February. lilykamper.com

Sabine Ghanem Sabine Ghanem’s career to date sounds too good to be true. After all, here is a woman who fell into the industry almost by chance; after studying at the prestigious Gemological Institute of America, she was unable to find a job so decided to give jewellery design a whirl and after just two years, she has already achieved unprecedented success. Her debut collection Relic, an assortment of medieval-inspired pieces, was snapped up by the likes of Browns in London and Bergdorf Goodman in New York. This was followed shortly after by Harlequin, a 35-piece collection based around the colourful Art Deco movement, which was highly sought-after. Speaking to Sabine, she is nothing if not humble: “I’ve just been very lucky. I designed the first collection without even a thought that it would turn into a job.” It is because of this fateful series of events, perhaps, that she is so relaxed when it comes to her brand. Working from her Belgravia home, Sabine spends hours “overdosing on vintage imagery... my favourite part of my research is looking at old stuff; vintage films, books, even YouTube videos. I’ve just watched a film from 1936 called The Great Zeigfeld and just the costumes could inspire a whole collection.” The designer is in the midst of creating her third collection, due to launch at the end of this month. While reluctant to give too much away, she does confide that, like the past two collections, she has referred back to a previous era; the Renaissance. A self-confessed hermit, Sabine jokes how one day she would like to open a store right at the entrance of her flat, “all in velvet and warm colours, like a beautiful jewellery box”. sabineg.com

GEORGINA SKAN “So how big is your team?” I ask Georgina Skan as we sit down for coffee. “You’re looking at it,” she smiles, pointing to herself and her sister. “I like to think of it as the blind leading the blind.” In spite of her selfdeprecating appraisal, it is evident from her jewellery pieces that Georgina is anything but blind; in fact, she is clearly visionary. However, despite having been head designer at Garrard and Asprey, she has remained relatively under the radar. After studying at Central Saint Martins, where she acquired a BA in jewellery design, Georgina then went on to work on the shop floor at Theo Fennell but it wasn’t long before he realised where her talents really lay: “After months of bugging Theo he took me on as his PA but then he realised how useless I was at it,” she explains, laughing. “So I ended up working with him for four years as his head designer.” Next came Garrard, where Georgina joined Jade Jagger who was creative director at the time. After Jagger left, she was able to make her own mark on the company, responsible for creating the iconic Wings collection. She was then headhunted by Asprey but after a spell as design director she found herself “itching to do her own work” so decided to wing it alone. Last year, Georgina launched her first eponymous collection; The Cocktail Hour. Comprising 10 pieces, ranging from Art Deco cocktail rings incorporating one-of-a-kind gemstones to a spectacular cuff inspired by French lace, it showcased her unique design talent and creativity. Because of her old-school training, Georgina scorns computers in favour of traditional crafting techniques, thus giving her pieces an authentic and timeless quality. “I think you can very easily develop a cookie-cutter approach when you’re designing collections,” she comments. “I’ve been guilty of this at times but I know now this isn’t the best way to work.” Having worked at some of Bond Street’s top jewellery houses, Georgina has a good relationship with some

“I couldn’t work with a stone dealer unless I know for certain that they’ve gone straight to the source.” of the most respected stone dealers who emphasise the importance of ethical mining; this is a message that she, too, spreads. “I couldn’t work with a stone dealer unless I know for certain that they’ve gone straight to the source.” Given the incredible response she received from The Cocktail Hour, this year sees the designer extend the collection based around themes she explored initially: Lace, Coulisses and Cage. This will include a beautiful lace wing collar with a matching cocktail ring, and a diamond and emerald bracelet based on the original Cage earrings (inspired by the tiny ribcage of a hummingbird). These pieces will be released over the course of the year and the designer will also continue to work on bespoke commissions, this being at the heart of the brand. georginaskan.com

Tessa Packard Q. What are you currently working on? A: I’ve just created a collection inspired by English penny sweets. It started off with the idea of going to a gemstone boutique and it reminding me of being a kid in a sweet shop. I like the juxtaposition of something that originally cost a penny and something that looks like a million dollars. Pieces with a lower price point can be collected over time and layered up, while the more high-end pieces include gemstone-encrusted honey drop rings and earrings, and these watermelon tourmaline slices that look like Brighton rock. It’s really fun. Q. I understand you do bespoke commissions. What engagement ring trends are you noticing? A: I think there will always be a market for the single stone setting but I find people come to me because they want something that is classic but also different. I’ve recently finished a commission for a 90 year-old man who wanted a modern brooch for his wife for their diamond wedding anniversary. I love how even at that age they still want to give each other interesting, innovative presents. Q. What’s your most treasured possession? A: My photo albums full of collages and storyboards that I do religiously. I started when I was about 12 and I have so many now I can’t even count but if I had a fire those would be what I’d save.

Q. What do you love most about London? A: It’s ever-changing and never-changing, if that makes sense. There are consistently new shops, new restaurants, new pop-ups. And yet, the Chelsea that I live in now is still the Chelsea that I grew up in; the feeling and the vibe hasn’t changed. Q. Best beauty secret? A: Lime juice mixed with granulated sugar as a face scrub. The acid in the lime eats into your skin so you come out looking glowing. I use it at the beginning of spring to give myself a bit of a revamp. Q. Preferred exercise regime? A: I do one hour of yoga a week for my back but otherwise nothing. I did ten years of intense running but then I gave up because it made me into a bad person [laughing]. Q. Favourite place to escape to? A: The middle of nowhere in Mozambique. My family and I stay in a camp where there’s nothing around so it’s heaven. Q. Worst guilty pleasure? A: Probably lunchtime drinking. You know you shouldn’t really do it when you’re working but it’s just so nice sometimes! Q. New Year’s resolutions? A: To learn how to relax as I’ve become a total workaholic. I think my husband would really appreciate it if I wasn’t on Instagram every single second. And maybe to make myself feel less guilty when I am on Instagram. tessapackard.com

Raymond Weil remembered Few are the watch houses still in the hands of their founding families. One that remains so is Raymond Weil, which, following the recent passing of company creator Mr Weil, falls under the stewardship of grandson Elie Bernheim. One of Bernheim’s first acts as CEO was to launch the Maestro Raymond Weil Limited Edition, a beautiful, rose-gold-fluted chronograph embossed with his grandfather’s signature on its dial. An automatic-winding mechanical heart, equipped with a 42-hour power reserve, sits inside the COSC-certified timepiece, which has to be one of the brand’s most ambitious pieces yet. A fitting tribute indeed. Maestro Raymond Weil Limited Edition, £14,950, raymond-weil.com

ONE TO WATCH This month Sandy Madhvani, Showroom Manager at David M Robinson in Canary Wharf, selects his watch of the moment:

“The Ballon Bleu watch by Cartier adds a dash of elegance to any wrist. The convex curves of the case, guilloché dial, sword-shaped hands and polished or satin-finish links of the bracelet highlight the brand’s extraordinary attention to detail.” Ladies Ballon Bleu, £5,350, Cartier Available at David M Robinson, Jubilee Place, Canary Wharf

 Polished precision Bremont, the British watch brand that manufactures its mechanical timepieces in Henley-on-Thames, has introduced a polished steel version of its ALT1-C. The classic piece takes design cues from the company’s 2012 Victory, which remains arguably the brand’s best-looking creation to date. Whereas the Victory was limited (and sold out almost immediately), Bremont will make as many of the ALT1-C/PW as it thinks it can sell, which, owing to its good looks and the cult following the brand commands, will more than likely be an awful lot. FASHION A Cut Above Arguably one of the world’s most famous addresses, No.1 Savile Row has been restored to its full glory, as the new global flagship for Gieves and Hawkes. The highlight of the restoration is the Map Room, first added to the eighteenthcentury townhouse by the Royal Geographical Society in 1871 – its gallery houses a new formal and eveningwear department alongside archival military pieces. The grand proportions also contrast the more enclosed, wood-panelled private tailoring rooms, where original features meet contemporary art in the form of Fredrikson Stallard’s mirror pieces. 1 Savile Row, W1S 3JR, gievesandhawkes.com

Smart Wear Dressing in lighter shades doesn’t mean cutting out all dark colour: a dark belt, bag or shoes will break up the pale. Plus, smart loafers and a simple leather belt will add an urban, professional quality if you’re worried about looking more Riviera-ready than office appropiate.

Well suited Once you pull on a light jacket over a pair of white chinos, the potential to slip into Miami Vice territory rises dangerously high. Off-white blazers with a pattern such as tweed, paired with a shirt or jumper that has small details to pick out the main colour of the blazer, will layer well and keep you on the right side of this century.

It’s also a Spring-friendly shade of off-white that will go with both dark winter jeans and light chinos once the BBQs begin. Hooded Jacket, £135, COS, Jubilee Place

The clever thing  In this busy, blustery world of ours there’s little stopping your tie flapping around like a nervous sixth former’s, dipping in your coffee every time you sit down. fresh appeal old-timer This one’s been around since 1964, which is a testament to its enduring appeal. butch & some panache average jo Most of Jo Malone’s colognes are unisex which, rather than making them feel feminine, means they’re light and subtle – ideal if you’re in the market for something discreet. Oud & Bergamot has a smoky depth under the crispness of the bergamot: elegant and composed, yet still masculine. Oud & Bergamot Cologne 100ml, £100, Jo Malone, Jubilee Place

Le Labo is an established enough brand to be stocked by Mr Porter, but not known enough that you’ll catch it on many other guys. man

When Liam Neeson was offered the role of Bryan Mills in Taken, he thought it would be a fairly under-the-radar project. Cut to six years later and the franchise has made over $602 million to date, as well turning the actor into Ireland’s answer to Bond. We meet the man himself to discuss the third and final instalment

W

Words: camilla davies

hen it comes to high-intensity action films, we’re a nation obsessed. Ditto franchises – give us sequels, prequels, thirds! There’s the inimitable Hunger Games, the Bourne saga, and, of

course, Taken, the blockbuster trilogy which follows Liam Neeson as retired CIA field operative Bryan Mills as he attempts to rescue his ‘taken’ daughter. “Every actor knows that there will be some periods where you’re the flavour of the month and then you disappear,” says Neeson when we meet to discuss the third instalment of the action film Taken. “Some people come back, others don’t. I didn’t expect to be so busy and it’s been good for me.” At 62 years old, Neeson has enjoyed a career across filmic cannons, with notable roles as Oskar Schindler in Spielberg’s Schindler’s List and in Star Wars as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Since the turn of the millennium, Neeson has positioned himself firmly within the alpha male movie genre with a heroic work ethic. According to

Neeson, his willingness to work is “a real characteristic of people in the North [of Ireland], my parents drilled it into my sisters and myself: Get a job, no matter what your profession is going to be. Get a job, provide for yourself and provide for your family”. The now-cult classic Taken in 2008 proved Neeson’s real career renaissance, with the Northern Ireland-born actor playing protagonist

“I don’t know whether people wonder whether this guy is getting too old to be delivering all that punishment”

CANARY WHARF | 39

Bryan Mills, a man with a strong sense of duty and mission; “I’m drawn to men of that nature,” he says. “There’s so many ways to get lost in the world if you don’t have some sense of purpose and direction. In his case, he’s been trying to defend his daughter from danger and now he’s having to defend himself. But he intends to put a finish to it and you better believe he’s serious about that!” he laughs. Now, with Taken 3, the odds are once again stacked against Mills. “I guess this guy just has a way of attracting trouble,” Neeson smiles, his Irish brogue still as charming as ever. “My guy sees all the forces turning against him but he’s always ready to fight back. I’m attracted to characters who are loners. There’s something mysterious, manly, and stoic about them,” he adds. The franchise has sparked it’s fair share of parodies for its choice lines (the “I don’t know who you are, I don’t know what you want,” Family Guy skit comes to mind) but the film certainly brought in the crowds, going on to earn more than $250 million at the global box office. Neeson doesn’t mind admitting that Taken’s success caught him off guard. “I thought it was a well-made European thriller which might have some limited success in the U.S. – nothing more. But then it took off and suddenly I started receiving a lot

of action scripts and they’re still coming. It’s also led to a lot of other work for me so I’m immensely grateful.” Since its success, Neeson has worked prolifically in similarly high-octane roles, with films including The A-Team, Clash of the Titans, Unknown, Battleship and The Dark Knight Rises. “I’m getting the chance to do a lot of interesting films and playing different kinds of characters – not just getting to do damage to people all the time!” he laughs. And while it involves hours in gym, that’s not a problem for Neeson. He’s focusing on staying in shape (“I always have done”) but admits that when shooting high-impact films, he has to “up the ante a little bit”. Looking back to Neeson’s teen years, however, perhaps he was always in training to play the alpha male. At just nine years old, Neeson began boxing at youth club; before long he was Ulster’s amateur senior boxing champion, until particularly nasty punch to the jaw saw him consider other options. The question is whether boxing is an unforgettable skill, like riding a bicycle? “When you’ve trained as a fighter for six years, as I did when I was young, you learn how to throw a punch. Your boxing instincts never leave you and now I like the feeling of knowing that you’ve brought your physical level back to a fairly high level. There’s a level of pride and confidence knowing that you still have a few skills…” He may have memorised the moves, but beyond 60, it must get harder to roll with the punches. “Sometimes my knees feel stiff or sore but otherwise it’s OK,” he says. Neeson has spent the past ten films working regularly with a trainer who specialises in fight sequences. Saying, “It’s not just learning the choreography for the fight sequences, it’s getting in the gym, running, and getting very fit. He’s helped me get into better shape now than I was in thirty years ago,” rest assured the actor can “definitely” look after himself in a fight. “I feel stronger and I also have more energy during the day because I’ve been maintaining a high level of fitness. Especially at my age, where I’m working 16-hour days often and a lot of fight sequences or running and the like are involved.” That said, his “bravest” effort so far has taken place away from the camera. “I climbed a tiny little mountain in Utah and I actually do have a fear of

FEATURE

heights. My son and I climbed this little peak, it was called Molly’s Nipple,” he laughs. “It was only about 3,000 feet or something. I was really s**t scared, especially getting near the summit and it wasn’t pickaxe time but it was pretty steep. There were a couple of moments where everybody says, ‘Don’t look down!’ But you have to look down, you just have to, but it was scary. God.” For Neeson, being in demand at his age – and not just for ‘dad’ roles – has given him a renewed purpose as an actor. “It’s a great life,” he observes. “Although I haven’t done any theatre in six years and it’s starting to weigh on me. It gets harder for you the longer you’ve been away from the stage and I’m still looking for a great new play to get me back into that world.” “Work gives your life structure when you lose your way. That explains why I’ve deliberately worked a lot in

recent times. Plus there’s the fact that I’ve always had the feeling my run of good luck won’t last forever.” While Neeson craves a return to his theatrical roots, a fourth Taken isn’t entirely out of the question. “It’s a rollicking good story and I’ve had great fun doing them,” says the actor. “Making these films has helped me get back into very good shape and it’s given me a lot of attention that I’m obviously grateful for.” The only problem that remains is rather superficial: “I don’t know whether people will look at me and wonder whether this guy is getting too old to be getting banged around and delivering all that punishment. Maybe he needs to retire and lead a quieter life!” Not just yet Liam. Taken 3 is in cinemas from 8 January 2015

Using massage and lymphatic drainage, Eve’s tried and tested techniques will rid your skin of any puffiness-causing toxins, before slathering on a paraffin wax mask and some serious manual extraction (deep breath – it’s worth it). If you have problem skin, give Dr Terry Long a call – an expert in treating adult acne, her legendary medical facials and bespoke skin products can get you back to clear, unblemished skin in less than three months (drterry.com). To maintain great skin you should aim to have a facial at least once a month – a great maintenance version is the newly launched Luxury Bespoke Facial Signature Facial at Michaeljohn (£160, michaeljohn.co.uk) The treatment is a feat of engineering designed to keep you looking tip-top – over 90 minutes you will be treated to skin analysis, LED light therapy (to accelerate the body’s natural repair systems), a contouring face massage and as many high-tech serums that your skin can take. You will leave looking like a million dollars, but best of all it will keep getting better.

DO IT YOURSELF Start with a good cleansing regime – go for products that resurface the skin such as Elemis’ Tri-Enzyme Facial Wash (£29, Waitrose, Food, Fashion & Home, Canada Place) which will wash away the city pollution and dead skin cells that can lead to skin looking dull and lifeless. Every few days add a facial brush like Clinique’s Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush (£79, Boots, Canada Place) to your routine – this will give a really deep-down cleanse, and ensure that all of your expensive beauty products are actually getting to your skin. Next you need to introduce yourself to antioxidants, which go a long way to keeping skin healthy for longer. Every beauty editor worth her salt has a bottle of SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF Gel in her bathroom cupboard – this tiny little bottle is full of Vitamin C, Phloretin and Ferulic Acid a powerful antioxidant trio which effectively undoes the damage of sun and city pollution.

To keep skin moisturised you need a good serum such as Medik8’s Hydr8 B5 for day (£30, medik8.com) and the new night version (£36 night), followed by an all-rounder cream – Sisley’s All Day All Year (£236, Waitrose Food, Fashion & Home, Canada Place) or Clarins Multi-Active Day and Night creams (from £42, Boots, Canada Place) – . For the perfect foundation, it’s all about multitasking – finding something that actively benefits your skin, rather than simply covers it up. Oxygenetix (£48, phiclinic.com) is a fantastic skincare-meets foundation that is so gentle that it was often used for post-surgery A-listers. For a glam night option, By Terry’s Terrybly Densiliss foundation (£78, Space N.K., Cabot Place) is amazing – it will give you a flawless finish and is full of high-performance anti-ageing ingredients.

…A great smile Ever notice that the first thing Simon Cowell does to X Factor winners is sort their teeth out – they’ve barely put the microphone down before he has them in an orthodontist’s chair. But if your memory of dental work is strip lights and painful, wiry braces then think again…

Call the Expert Getting your teeth whitened can be life-changing – it’s such an easy change to make and will go a long way to making you look like the best version of yourself. At-home kits are easiest, but it’s better to have a dentist’s-strength peroxide to whiten fully, which is why SmilePod in Canada Sqaure is a great option – they will fit you with dentist trays so you have the perfect mould and send you off with a two-week supply of whitening products which will leave you with pearly gleaming teeth that will make you look years younger (smilepod.co.uk). If you need some serious work then head to Elleven Dental in Marylebone, which offers some of the best cosmetic dentistry in the country. From discreet lingual braces (which go behind the teeth) to Invisalign, Dr Patel and his team can give you the smile you’ve always wanted in a matter of months (ellevendental.com).

DO IT YOURSELF Obviously get a good toothbrush, the Oral B Pro 2500 is the best on the market at its price point (£35, Boots, Canada Place), however, if you really want to go all-out you could always invest in its Bluetooth Smartseries version (£299.99, Waitrose Food, Fashion & Home, Canada Place) which will actually work with an app to record your daily brushing and send the results to your dentist. Assuming your dentist cares that is. For toothpaste, the new name-to-know is BOCA

CANARY WHARF | 59

(£29, boca.co.uk), which has removed a lot of the industrial chemicals and parabens found in other brands.

…To look younger Ok yes we know – age gracefully, enjoy life and so on; but if you’re the type to really enjoy life then trust me, ageing is nothing like graceful. Get battling...

Call the expert One name: Dr. Raj Acquilla. This man can work actual miracles – with careful and discreet use of Botox he can keep the wrinkles at bay – while his fillers (the only man trusted by half of London’s elite) will give you the cheekbones you’ve always wanted (Phi Clinic, 102 Harley Street). For everyday upkeep, take your face along to the Face Gym in Selfridges (£30 for 35 minutes), where the 50 or so muscles in your face are toned and conditioned like the ones in your body. Regular visits will work to combat sagging or puffy skin and dull complexions, teaching your muscles to do the work themselves. Zap away telltale scarring and pigmentation marks with a treatment from London’s laser queen Debbie Thomas, whose new Leading Dual Yellow Laser Therapy will eradicate everything from acne scars to rosacea and telltale sun spots (debbiethomas.com). Happily – and much more easily – a good set of eyelash extensions also go a long way to helping you wake up feeling young and fabulous. Daxita at Atherton

Cox does an excellent set of ‘Russian Lashes’ – which are individually tailored to your eyes to give you stunning, sweeping lashes that just look like they might just be your own. The best thing is that they last for up to two months, meaning you won’t have to worry again until March (from £250, athertoncox.co.uk).

DO IT YOURSELF Nothing ages the skin like scars and pigmentation so repeat after me: SPF, SPF, SPF. The best are Ole Henriksen Protect the Truth SPF50 (£31, feelunique.com) and La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF50 (£16.50, Boots, Canada Place) and will stop any future pigmentation marks or ageing sun damage setting in. A good mascara is a must – under-the-radar brand Dreamweave & Co’s new Lash Construct Magnet Mascara is a brilliant alternative to false lashes, promising to thicken and nourish your lashes from the root in just 15 days. If all else fails, blind them with scent: a study found that wearing a citrus scent can make people think you look ten years younger – try Grapefruit Cologne from Jo Malone (from £40, Jo Malone, Jubilee Place).

…Perfect hair A good haircut can take years off you, not to mention improve your work prospects by 86 per cent (OK, I made that up – but it must be around that). Ever since Kate Middleton’s tresses were given a global platform, we have all been desperate for swishy, attention-commanding princess hair. So here’s what to do…

Call the expert You need a serious cut and colour: non-negotiable. For this, head straight to Michaeljohn Salon (michaeljohn.co.uk) and ask for Niamh – this Irish beauty will know exactly what you need even if you don’t (you can also celeb spot while there!). Alternatively you can click onto cool new website haircvt.com and select the look and haircut you want and the site will give you your perfect hairdresser in London. For keeping your hair looking its best, pop into Blow in Jubilee Place for a gloss shot and hair massage (£15, Blow ltd., Jubilee Place) which will give you a boost in between hairdresser visits, and a blow dry (£25) that will last for days.

DO IT YOURSELF Treated stressed tresses to Julien Farel Vitamin Restore Shampoo and Conditioner (£16 each, Selfridges) – they Model: Leoni @ Storm

beauty

“Ever since Kate Middleton’s tresses were given a global platform, we have all been desperate for princess hair”

will revive even the limpest hair back to life. Once a week, use a good hair mask like Oribe Sigature Moisture Mask (£54, Space.NK., Cabot Place) or Espa Pink Hair & Scalp Mud (£32, espaskincare.com) – both of which will leave you with super-soft, super-smooth hair. For a strengthening treat, add a drop of oil such as Alterna’s Bamboo Kendi Oil (£19.75, lookfanatastic. com) to hair before drying it – it will banish frizz and add shine while undoing the damage of any heat styling you may be about to inflict.

… ....To sleep better

We all know the mental benefits of a good night’s sleep, but sleep is absolutely vital in helping you look your best. A good eight hours is proven to help both your body and your skin function at their best, helping you look and feel better – it’s not called beauty sleep for nothing. As facialist Sarah Chapman says: “Whilst you sleep your skin has the time to repair and renew; this time is vital so that skin has a healthy and normal functioning routine to keep it looking and feeling its best.”

Call the expert Meditation can work wonders for those who struggle to

stop their minds from spinning – try the London Meditation Centre (londonmeditationcentre.com) or the Headspace app (headspace.com) – which now has more than a million users worldwide – for a lesson in mindfulness. If it’s more physical aches and pains that are keeping you awake, pop in to see Pete at SameDayDoctor + SameDayChiropractor (samedaydoctor.co.uk), whose brand of destressing massage will have you asleep on the massage table in minutes.

DO IT YOURSELF Try Cherry Night powder (£24.95, victoria’shealth.com) in the evening. It contains extracts of cherries, which are rich in melatonin (the ‘sleep’ hormone) and will help get your body into ‘sleep mode’. To help you relax, turn off all iPads, phones and computers as the light from the screen disturbs melatonin production and can stop you drifting off properly, and have a hot shower or bath with Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil (£40, Space.NK., Cabot Place) which contains the perfect mix of vetivert, camomile and sandlewood that is as potent as it is delicious. Finally spritz your pillow with a touch of This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray (£22, Space.NK., Cabot Place) – which is clinically proven to help you drift off – you’ll be lucky if you manage to turn the lights off.

Touch of genius Want to improve your performance in the boardroom or the gym? Then head to samedaydoctor+samedaychiropractic to see Pete Mavromatis for a deep-tissue massage that will change your life

I

WORDS: Elle Blakeman

’m not new to massage. I’ve been touched everywhere: airport lounges, day spas – even underwater in the Maldives in a particularly surreal ‘Watsu’ treatment which was supposed to be transcendent: I’m English; it was just awkward. But when I started a serious workout regime – a four-times-a-week death sentence with a personal trainer who seems to want to turn me into a rugby player – a massage became less a nice thing to do, and more “please God fix me so I can walk up stairs again”. And so, after talking (moaning) to my MD, he sent me off to ‘his’ guy – Pete Mavromatis, a deep-tissue expert working at samedaydoctor+sameday chiropractic just over the water in West India Quay in a beautifully quaint brick warehouse conversion that feels a million miles away from the corporate shine of Canary Wharf. An expert in his field and a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists, Mavromatis treats some of the most high-profile people in London, all with the million-and-one different complaints that go hand-inhand with a type-A driven life. His varied clientele, includes bankers, sportsmen, martial arts, professional dancers and even circus performers (Mavromatis is the official massage therapist for the Aircraft Circus Performance Company based at the Hangar Arts Trust in Charlton, London.) – i.e. people who put their body through a lot more than the odd hour on a TRX – means he’s more than capable of seeing to my gym-battered body. “Pete’s treatments are essential to the wellbeing of the circus performer – a combination of knot removal and relaxation” says Lucy Francis, director and performer . “I treat the body holistically,” he tells me. “It’s an amazing piece of machinery and if you treat the body well, and allow it to become the perfect instrument, there’s a lot it can do for itself.” Part of treating the body as a whole means Mavromatis isn’t thrown by my self-diagnosed aches and pains. “People forget that the body works together – so if one part isn’t working, it will affect the rest of you. “What I aim to do is get people to harmonise their mind and body promoting

wellbeing. Once the body is rested, the mind can rest too and we see things more clearly.” I soon discover the difference between deep-tissue massage and all the treatments I’ve had in the past – in short, everything. This is no place for incense and light, sweeping strokes, it’s serious body work, with Mavromatis using heroic levels of strength to rid my body of anything that might be stopping it from operating at 100 per cent. “You will sleep so much better tonight,” he says while kneading a particularly stubborn knot in my shoulder. “Once you’re detoxified, you’re able to sleep better, which in itself is very important. When you are stressed out or worried about work, the mind races and this can stop you from relaxing both mentally and physically. “Rest and sleep are a form of nourishment for the body. When you think clearly you can achieve so much more.” Indeed, several of his clients come in before a big meeting or presentation at work, in order to get rid of any tension that might get in the way. “People perform so much better when they are relaxed. You’re also just in such a better mood – most of my clients are different people by the time they leave.” I make a mental note to find out when my MD’s next appointment is so I can schedule a pay review or break some bad news. At the start, Mavromatis tells me I may end up falling asleep. I am sceptical because I have several knots that need industrial pressure to remove, however, 45 minutes in and it’s all I can do to keep my eyes open. After just a one-hour treatment, I feel calmer and lighter than I have in months and my aches, while still there, have eased up a lot. Two follow-up sessions later and I feel fantastic – not quite a great instrument, maybe a slightly beaten-up Fender – my team seem less terrified and my trainer tells me that my work in the gym has improved hugely. Who knew the key to a better body lies outside the gym? samedaydoctor+samedaychiropractic, Hertsmere Road, Canary Wharf, London E14 4AF. BUSINESS

Suits you, Sir If it doesn’t go without saying that your next interview is not the time to debut that new orange bomber jacket of yours, a survey of 3,000 hiring managers by CareerBuilder (careerbuilder.co.uk) chose the colour as the worst shade to wear to a job interview, identifying it with someone unprofessional. Unsurprisingly, conservative blue and black topped the best options, being associated with being a team player and leadership respectively. Although, it’s worth taking note that those surveyed said that what’s most important is dressing for the environment of the job, as otherwise you’ll immediately come across as a poor fit. In other words, no one’s getting hired to man a beach-side cabana in a suit and tie, and nobody’s being recruited to manage a hedge fund in flip-flops and beaded jewellery. $17bn $  COMPUTER SAYS NO Less than a third of Londoners are happy with how businesses answer the phone, a study of 1,000 consumers by PH Media Group has found. Phone manner is to blame, suggesting callers do detect any eye rolling or Facebook scrolling going on on the other end. Mark Williamson, sales and marketing director at PH Media Group, blames “a tendency among companies to focus their attention and budgets on visual marketing and internet presence” while actually “the telephone remains a crucial aspect of branding, marketing and customer service.” Of course you could call up to complain, but who wants to deal with that passive agressive nightmare? phmg.com

ith fashion often changing dramatically from one season to the next, predicting trends four or five years down the line is a guessing game that only the foolhardy would have a go at. In other fields, however, spotting how the future might play out is a little more achievable because of the way that one bit of technology leads to another. By connecting the dots between what we know today and where we think they will lead us tomorrow, a small bunch of men and women known as ‘futurists’ make their living. Two of Britain’s most respected are Ray Hammond, arguably Europe’s most widely published futurist who was honoured with a UN gold medal for services to futurology by Mikhail Gorbachev, and Dr Ian Pearson, founder of the company Futurizon, author of multiple books, and a man who boasts an 85 per cent success rate when looking 10 to 15 years ahead. Here, they take us on a whirlwind journey into the future…

TECHNOLOGY “A problem we have is that we don’t yet have the language of the future,” says Hammond, who knew something like the iPhone was coming a good six or seven years before it first arrived. “In much the same way ‘the horseless carriage’

Ever wish you could predict the future? Meet the men who can… words: Mike peake

72 | CANARY WHARF

didn’t do a very good job of describing what the car would become, the term ‘mobile phone’ is very misleading.” Within a decade or so, Hammond thinks that mobile phones as we know them will disappear entirely, as their capabilities morph into wearable pieces of technology that we have with us at all times. “Think of assorted little items around the body: on our wrists, in our ears, on our belts and microphones on our collars. They become a body network, and will look after everything from our health to our finances and all of our communications.” Going forward a little – around 25 years – retinalprojection contact lenses will be at the heart of this portable kit. It will be several giant leaps ahead of where Google Glass is today, and, says Pearson, “will show how the mobile phone was just a passing technology.” All the processing power you’ll need, he says, will fit into an earring stud, and we will be able to look out and see data overlaid on whatever we’re looking at. “It’s what we call augmented reality today,” he says, “and when you see a restaurant in the real world you’ll be able to see its menu, its daily specials, and reviews from your friends.” The contact lenses would also serve as TV and cinema screens, adds Hammond, making ‘home entertainment’ as we know it utterly redundant. “Your entertainment goes wherever you are,” he says.

FEATURE

Fashion Stella McCartney might be looking two or three seasons ahead, but our futurists can go one better: they think they know what we’ll be wearing decades from now, and the answer is ‘whatever you want people to think you’re wearing.’ Pearson explains: “As augmented reality really comes into play, you’ll soon be able to start making your appearance more and more virtual.” Eventually, he says, we’ll each have a ‘digital aura’, so that passers-by wearing retinal-projection contact lenses will not so much see you but the avatar you’ve created for yourself. “It’s a digital bubble, showing your Facebook profile, what you’re into, whether you’re single and looking for a date on Friday – whatever you like,” Pearson says. “The World Wide Web came from merging communications together; what augmented reality does is merge the whole virtual world with the physical world.”

Transport “There are a few worries about self-driving cars,” says Hammond, “because if someone is killed, who’s liable? Even so, it’s definitely going to happen and in 25 years, on most major roads in the UK, the cars will be self-driving.” Pearson concurs: “All the big manufacturers are working on this – you can expect the first on the roads in

10 years. They could be powered by inductive pick-ups from under the road surface, a bit like Scalextric. Once we start to see this technology – in cities, initially – it will take off very rapidly.” Which is more than can be said for advances in aeronautics: neither futurist sees any dramatic developments there in the next few decades, although growing affluence in China, India and other emerging countries will, says Pearson, lead to record tourist numbers at the world’s most popular hotspots. “Eventually, they’ll simply have to put limits on visitor numbers,” he says, “and a big travel trend will be that virtual visits will be the way many people only ever get to see certain parts of the world.” With the planet bursting at the seams, some think that interstellar travel will ease the burden – although Hammond worries that humans just aren’t cut out for space travel. Not that it will matter: by the end of this century, he says, human evolution as we know it will be coming to an end as our intelligence is transferred to machines. This ‘successor species’, as Hammond puts it, will be free of biological limitations and well suited to travel to the realms of beyond. “This is merely the beginning of humanity as we know it,” he smiles. “These machines will be our descendants.” rayhammond.com, futurizon.com

news Canary Wharf Group gives the gift of food for Christmas On 4 December, volunteers from Canary Wharf Group took to the Sundial Centre at Bethnal Green to spread a little Christmas joy. As part of the Annual Christmas Food Bags Appeal – a project put together by the East End Community Foundation – essential cupboard items, such as tinned soup and vegetables, were given out to users of the community centre, as well a selection of Christmas gifts. Each year, this appeal aims to distribute 800 of these bags to vulnerable residents in nursing homes and day care centres across Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham. A sum of £3,400 has been raised so far for this cause, thanks to donations and the support of multiple companies, including Credit Suisse, Société Générale, Waitrose, Northern Trust and British Airways.

Twelve Days of Christmas Fun Run at Canary Wharf If you visited Canary Wharf on 12 December, you may have witnessed a rather unusual scene. French hens, gold rings and the occasional super man ran 1.2 miles, beginning and finishing at Ice Rink Canary Wharf. The charity fun run took place with a festive ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ theme, for which participants were invited to dress up as characters from the well-known carol, or as a favourite superhero. Each runner raised more than £200, which went towards two charities: Kids’ City and Muddy Boots. Kids’ City holds activities outside of school for children aged between three and 11, while providing employment and training opportunities for adults located in high-unemployment areas. The run ended in well-earned mince pies and mulled wine at Q on Ice bar and restaurant and a prize was awarded for the best costume – the winner was dressed as a partridge in a pear tree.

Canary Wharf Code Club join Lord Mayor’s Show For the past 14 years, Canary Wharf Group has taken part in the Lord Mayor’s Show – which is the world’s largest unrehearsed procession – that runs through the streets of the City of London. Each year, the show heralds the arrival of the new Lord Mayor, who for 2015 will be Alderman Alan Yarrow. On display is a curious blend of the City’s history and modern life, combining traditional livery companies, community groups and businesses. This year, Canary Wharf Group showcased Code Club, a network of after-school coding clubs where the classes are led by volunteer technology professionals from Canary Wharf and the wider area.

ome people – let’s put them in column A – seem to succeed in all fields of life. They have good relationships, great careers, read novels, don’t eat sugar, call their mothers and enjoy exercising. The others, huddled presumably less attractively in column B, drink too much, save too little, inhale carbs, buy bad presents and apply make-up on the Tube. The desire to transition from B to A is the backbone of new years’ resolution – the annual mass-assumption that next year could be your year if only you made a few small changes. Unfortunately, as ambition is met with reality, many of those resolutions lie broken by the time you’ve finished the leftover Christmas turkey. So we asked five experts working in the fields of fitness through to finance, how to make positive changes this New Year for a smarter, simpler, better 2015.

how to… Get your head in the game Landmark is often referred to as the ‘go to’ for anyone looking to make a real change in their lives, be it homeor work-related. Over the course of an intensive threeday and one evening seminar in Euston, the international training and development company offers a lesson in selfreflection that will help you to analyse what you really want in life – and more importantly how to get it. David Cunningham, a communication expert and seminar leader for Landmark explains that the course works, in part, by helping participants to stop having past experiences affect their future decisions in ways that aren’t productive. “Things happen as we’re growing up, we have experiences with money, we have experiences with success, we have experiences with failure, and then we make decisions based on those experiences – decisions like ‘I’m good at this’; ‘I’m not good at that’; like ‘This is possible’ or ‘That’s not possible’ – and it’s the decisions we make that colour and sometimes limit our choices when we are out to invent a career, or take a career step for ourselves, or take on something else important to us. “First you need to be willing to think big for yourself, to be willing to say: ‘Here’s exactly what I want’. ‘Here’s exactly the kind of job I would want’,” says Cunningham. “And then distinguish or notice every reason you’ve got why you don’t think that can happen. Then you’ve got a choice: you can either have what you want in life or you can have the reasons why you can’t have it.” While it sounds simple, the reality is somewhat more challenging and the course is anything but easy. However, a bit of tough love is sometimes exactly what it takes – over two million people have taken the Landmark

Forum, and the success stories continue to stack up, from CEOs to celebrities. Paul Grant, who works for a large professional services firm in Canary Wharf says the Landmark Forum left him with ‘increased effectiveness without effort’. “As I was becoming more senior at work, I was increasingly feeling more exposed,” says Grant. “I felt like someone was going to ‘find out’ that I didn’t really belong in that meeting or to be the one driving that big project because, in spite of the evidence, that was what I thought. I was working long hours and mostly thinking about work when I wasn’t there. It was exhausting. “After the Landmark Forum, my peace of mind and confidence increased dramatically. My ability to connect with people, to be straight with people, to trust myself and to speak my piece shifted completely.” “In the Landmark Forum, I saw that all human beings make these types of decisions,” agrees Barrister Michael Druce, who did the course in 2007. “Moments we experience failure, we make them mean something about us. “I now form business relationships with clients that ensures repeat work and am operating at an elevated level of effectiveness in my life.” “That’s what happens,” says Cunningham. “Once you distinguish between what actually happened versus the story or interpretation you made up about what happened, you begin to see how much of your life has been a reaction to your interpretation that you then related to as if it were the truth. When people sort that out, there’s tremendous freedom, and suddenly a whole world of new possibilities becomes available to them.” Here are Landmark’s tips for living a more productive life: 1) Give up being right – even if you are certain that you are – and consider your viewpoint as just one possible view. 2) Be authentic – letting people in on who you really are and what you’re dealing with can feel risky, but when you’re straight with people and willing to be vulnerable and risk not looking good, that’s the kind of conversation that has people really engage and connect. 3) Be unreasonable – practice giving up the focus on all the reasons something can’t happen. When you develop the habit of looking beyond those reasons for how you can accomplish something, you and those around you get bigger. 4) Change the way you look at problems – consider that to be alive is to have problems, you might as well make sure that your problems are big enough to be worth your time. 5) Be present – living in the moment is easier said than done. But when you can recognise the running commentary that is the thoughts and opinions that constantly pop up unbidden, and then turn down the volume on that, you are able to actually be with people, yourself, and life.

a waste of energy that’s better spent on solving the issue. So, the next time you feel overwhelmed, take five minutes to calm down and ask yourself whether the situation really is as bad as it feels, and then knock back a shot of Siberian ginseng. Over time, hopefully you’ll be able be able to differentiate what’s genuinely serious, and what’s a hiccup you’ll have forgotten about by next week.

how to… Dress smarter

Akcelina Cvijetic

A man’s working wardrobe is like Tetris, it’s just a game of trying to line up the pieces that fit, without creating any awkward layers. Fortunately Roberto Revilla – Bobby to friends – of Roberto Revilla London knows the cheats for dressing for your body type to ensure you’re set for a sleeker, smarter 2015.

“We always want to have your viewers’ eyes sweeping up your body. The more they have to do this the more their brains register that you are taller than you actually are” how to… Stress less Benjamin Franklin once said: “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Had he had Gmail, we can only imagine ‘stress’ would have also made it onto the list. Unfortunately, day-to-day stress is unavoidable, however, you can change how you handle it. There are too things you can focus on when dealing with stress in the short term – your diet and your attitude. When it comes to the former, skipping breakfast and poor food choices can lead to energy dips, irritability and craving coffee though a drip, all of which magnify any struggles throughout the day. Wellness specialist Akcelina Cvijetic recommends when grabbing breakfast on the go in Canary Wharf to pick up a green tea and protein pot (boiled eggs and spinach) from Pret A Manger and a ‘bulletproof coffee’ from Crussh to keep you switched on until lunch. You can also give your energy levels a boost through supplements, Akcelina recommends: amino acids, Vitamin B complex, Siberian ginseng, iron and antioxidant complex. Secondly, there’s your attitude. When you’re feeling overloaded, take deep breaths and repeat after Akcelina: “I know this is stressing me out, but do I want to focus on my reaction or on the results I want to create here?” In other words, when stress hits you, don’t let the first wave of emotions drown you: “When we’re in this place we can’t trust our thinking because our brain has been hijacked by our emotions and our imagination is running wild with projections of reality not reality itself,” she says, because torturing yourself on what might happen is

He appreciates that professional men who – assuming they spend the majority of their time at work, and that time is typically spent in a suit – need to know their shirts and ties: “Most men default to white and blue shirts because it’s easy and there is nothing wrong with that. But, by a rule if you tan easily (which usually means you’re dark-haired and olive-to dark-skinned) ice-coloured shirts will always look amazing on you: think white, pink, blue, lavender. And, if you’re the opposite and burn faster than a vampire (usually meaning you have blonde or red hair) then pastel shades are best. Think off-white, cream, blue, salmon pinks.”

Next comes ties, Bobby advises: “White shirts suit pretty much any tie. With blue shirts, it’s blues, yellows and reds. For pink, try burgundy, navy and some lavenders. And for off-white or cream shirts, burgundy and navy are best. Plus, ties with small details that pick out the main colour of your shirts always work really well.” If you’ve overdone it this Christmas, or during the 11 months prior, also know that you can dress yourself slimmer: “A two-button jacket will create a slimmer line than a double-breasted or three-button. If you are broad and big do not wear skinny lapels – they’ll just make you look wider. Stick to jacket lapel widths that are just short of halfway to the shoulder end and make sure your

trousers are a trim cut to avoid looking ‘top-heavy’. For shirts, make sure the collar spread is no wider than your ears, else you will look, well… wider.” If your width’s not your concern but your height is, there are tricks for looking taller too: “We always want to have your viewers’ eyes sweeping up your body. The more they have to do this the more their brains register that you are taller than you actually are, so stay away from big chunky accessories like large-faced watches, thick belts and flowery pocket handkerchiefs. “Keeping clothing colours within a fairly consistent colour theme will also help create an illusion of height. As will weighting darker colours toward the bottom of the body.” And if your underwear has holes, please just throw them out – that’s a given.

how to… Get fit (with no free time) Getting fit is always up there at the top of people’s to-do list, but in practice trying to maintain the motivation to fit post-work gym trips and pre-dawn juicing into an already packed schedule isn’t easy. Despite this, there are people like Tom Exton who make you feel bad about yourself by pairing working a full-time job at one of Canary Wharf’s top banks with running an online fitness company, LDN Muscle (ldnmuscle.com), which he set up with his brother and two others. LDN Muscle appeals to the time-poor. It provides tailored fitness guides which are downloadable online, giving you a personal trainer in your pocket whether you’re in the gym or just at home. As Exton explains, if you’re short on time, efficient workouts are key: “Don’t

take extra-long rest periods, make sure tempo/form is on point and try to pre-plan what you’re doing before you go in to avoid wasting time. Plus it’s important to never underestimate the importance of nutrition – you’ve heard it before, but if you’re limited on training time because of work commitments then diet is make or break.” It is advice Exton follows – his typical workout routine is focused on time-saving: “I keep rest time short, concentrate on tempo and intensity, while utilising drop sets and supersets often, to really burn out the intended muscle group in minimal time.” The success of Tom’s fitness business means he has the added incentive to get the squats in because he has to “occasionally be scantily clad for photos”. Should you not have the same predicament, having a goal will help keep your motivation alive. Whether it’s dropping a dress size or increasing the distance you can run, a goal that feels in reach will give you a reason to not give up on the gym until you’re in the habit of going.

how to… Order wine You’ve scored a date, you booked the restaurant, but then the wine list comes and it might as well be in French – in fact, it probably is. Tomasz Kuszneruk, sommelier at Canary Wharf’s Plateau gives some sage advice for the nervous wine-orderer and it all comes down to “don’t be shy to say: ‘I know nothing about wine’”. You might feel that restaurants expect you to be wine-literate, but for the same reasons that you don’t tell surgeons where to cut or matadors when to get out the way, if you’re not, it’s time to trust the experts. “If there’s a sommelier in the restaurant or you’re in a wine shop, don’t pretend you know about wine – you won’t impress people. Just say, ‘I know nothing, but I would like this or that’, and the person will guide you,” says Tomasz. “And also don’t be shy to put your foot down on how

Tomasz Kuszneruk at Plateau Restaurant, Bar & Grill, Canada Place

fish, can you still share a bottle of wine? “You can have red wine with fish but be careful that that wine is very low in tannin. When the protein from the fish and the tannin from the wine combine in your mouth it creates a chemical reaction which creates a metallic taste. A red wine low in tannin, for example, is the Gamay or Bordelaise or Burgundy. But again, you don’t have to know it, speak to the sommelier as they know this kind of thing, that’s why they’re there.” And, on the subject of wine faux pas, if you bring a screw top to a dinner party, will it look ‘cheaper’ than a bottle with a cork? The answer’s no; corks allow oxygen to slowly seep into a bottle, creating a slowburning chemical reaction which evolves the taste of the wine over time. A screw top, however, prevents any oxygen from entering and so is actually the packaging of choice by wine makers who think the wine is at its ideal

“If there’s a sommelier in the restaurant or you’re in a wine shop, don’t pretend you know about wine – you won’t impress people. Just say, ‘I know nothing, but I would like this or that’” much you want to spend. It’s OK to go into a wine shop and say: ‘I have £10 to spend on a bottle, what’s best?’ At the end of the day, it’s only the super-rich or the people putting it on the company card who buy the priciest bottles. For everyone else in the restaurant or shop who’s spending his own money, they don’t buy the expensive wine and we all understand because we all do the same.” So, the wallet’s safe, but if you’ve been dreaming of the steak all day but your partner goes and orders the

composition at the time of bottling, and so who don’t want its taste to change over time. If you’re interested in trying some new wines in a casual setting, each month Tomasz hosts a wine club at Plateau, where a wine maker is invited to speak and guests try five wines matched with canapés for £25. Also, there’s the added bonus is that if you stay for dinner afterwards you receive a 50 per cent discount on your meal. Call 020 7715 7100 for details.

Expletive deleted Track-only Ferrari hybrid packs a 1,000hp punch

eet the new Ferrari, the FXX K – and be assured that the space between the second X and the K is important. Without it, it would be an expletive. On the other hand when you look at the specification, an expletive is what you will utter, guaranteed. Would you believe it has more than 1,000hp on tap? The FXX K is the latest in a line of Ferrari ‘research and development’ cars that are exclusively reserved for track use and are only available to a few handpicked (and extremely wealthy) ‘owners’. Officially they are referred to as Client Test Drivers. It’s based on the LaFerrari and is powered by a modified version of that car’s 6.2-litre V12 engine. One of those modifications involves removing the engine’s

silencers… this one’s going to be noisy. To that Ferrari has added an F1-style Kers (hence the K in its name) electric motor, or more formally, a kinetic energy recovery system that takes total power to 1,050hp. It also boasts a whole host of aerodynamic add-ons, splitters, fins, wings diffusers and by-pass ducts for a ‘50% improvement in downforce in the low drag configuration and a 30% improvement in the more aggressive downforce configuration’ says Ferrari. It will stick to the road, in other words. Fewer than 40 will be built at a cost of €2.5 million each. And those owners don’t really get to own the car. Instead they will be invited to drive them in a monitored test programme over the next two years. Whichever way you look at it, the Ferrari FXX K is completely mental.

Triple Tonic We love the Audi TT in the UK, says Matthew Carter. And the third generation version is the sharpest yet

N

ow here’s a thing. You might think most Audi TTs are sold in the USA, or perhaps in Germany. You’d be wrong: it seems that the biggest global market for Audi’s coupé with concept car looks is right here in the UK. We loved it from the moment it first appeared, back in 1995. That was when the star of the company stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show was a rakish 2+2 concept. It was called TT, after the British Tourist Trophy series of car and bike races. It had been created in California and really stood out in a sea of conventional-looking saloons and hatchbacks… Audi design, at that time, was as

adventurous as Prince Charles’ wardrobe. Stunning to look at but invariably impractical and usually impossible to build, concept cars rarely have a life outside the motor show circuit. But the TT was different. Just three years later, in 1998, the first generation TT made its bow, largely unchanged, as a full production model. And it was pretty dreadful. Oh, it was great to look at but those early versions had questionable handling characteristics and even once that had been sorted, it was a stodgy drive. It was based on the same underpinnings as the VW Bora, the Golf-with-aboot aimed at the family man with 2.5 kids, after all. Things improved with the second generation TT, which arrived in 2006. The concept car looks were sharpened and it was undoubtedly better to drive, especially in high performing RS guise. But it still lacked a certain something… not that that dented sales Now comes the third generation version. Sales will undoubtedly continue to skyrocket, but is the TT finally the driver’s car it ought to be? It certainly ticks all the right boxes when it comes to looks. In typical VW Group fashion – think how similar, yet how different, all seven iterations of the Golf are – the Mk3 TT can clearly trace its lineage back to that original concept car. The profile is dominated by the same dramatically

MOTORING

sloping roofline as the original (yes, headroom in the rear is still lacking) and the wheel arches are still boldly flared. But there is a dramatic new front with razor-sharp lines for the lights, single-frame grille and air intakes while the four interlocking rings of the Audi badge have been moved from the grille to the leading edge of the bonnet. Revolutionary, that. It’s a similar story at the rear where the lines are less fussy and more businesslike. Here, the standout feature is a

up a manual shifter in a sports car but, to my mind at least, the Stronic ’box is a perfect match for the TT. It can be left in auto mode for city trickling, but out on the open road responds instantly to the throttle and, of course, gives the driver the opportunity to play at being Lewis Hamilton with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Being an S line model, the test car was also lowered and was ‘blessed’ with sports suspension, a body kit and larger

“The biggest changes come inside, where the interior clearly points the way ahead for future Audis” narrow strip of LEDs that forms the third brake light and runs the entire width of the boot between the rear lamps. The biggest changes come inside, where the interior clearly points the way ahead for future Audis. It’s a case of less is more, with the plethora of buttons and dials loved by some manufacturers notable by their absence. Take the heater controls as an example. Instead of pictograms and buttons dominating the centre stack, all the controls are integrated into the centre of three turbine-like air vents in the middle of the instrument panel. Looks good and works well. And then there’s the dashboard display itself. Dials are clearly so yesterday as the entire screen in front of the driver has been filled by what Audi calls a Virtual Cockpit Display. It takes a little while to master, but you can tailor the information display to suit your needs or mood, swapping the conventional speedo and rev counter dials for smaller ones as the centre of the display becomes the sat nav screen… or the radio… or the phone/audio interface. As with all new toys it’s all-enveloping at first and, to be frank, more than a little distracting. But after a while the novelty wears off and it starts to make sense. In two or three years; time, all dashboards will be like this. Although the new TT is slightly longer than the outgoing model, it remains a 2+2. Rear legroom and headroom remain at a premium, but the seats do fold to increase luggage space from a generous 300 litres to more than 700 litres. As sports cars go, this is one of the more practical ones. And as sports cars go, this is one of the quicker ones, too. As usual there’s a wide selection of engine and drivetrain options, with more to come. The test car was towards the top of the current range, with a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine driving all four wheels via a semiautomatic Stronic gearbox. The quattro chassis promises masses of grip and the turbo engine punches out a 0-60 mph time of a shade over five seconds. Not everyone likes the idea of giving

wheels. Remarkably, however, the ride was nowhere near as harsh as the phase ‘lowered sports suspension’ would have you believe. Audi’s engineers are learning… In the driving rain of the test, the sure-footed quattro chassis helped keep all four wheels on the road and made for rapid progress. But although this is the best TT yet, it’s still not as involving as it could be. Nor is it especially cheap. The base car comes in at £34,545 to which were added around £10k’s worth of ‘extras’, most of which are essential if the car is to be enjoyed fully. At £45k, the Audi is moving in exalted company and that’s when it starts to become a less convincing proposition. Put it this way, 45 grand will also get you a more powerful, more exhilarating and less common Porsche Cayman. That’s an option that’s difficult to ignore.

Should auld acquaintance

be forgot? With a Toast to the Lassies and Cullen Skink, Burns Night might seem one of the more obscure celebrations in the Scottish calendar, but as the poet behind it is said to generate around £200m annually for the Scottish economy, it’s also one of the most lucrative Words: Melissa Emerson

W

hile the Scottish devolution issue may have divided opinion up and down the UK last year, the results showed that many of us are keen to stay united – and thank God for that, as our Northern neighbours really know how to party. Alongside the hugely popular Hogmanay and St Andrew’s Day celebrations is Burns Night – the celebration of Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns, which takes place on 25 January each year, the date of his birth in 1759. Originally just his close friends hosting an annual in memoriam celebration (Burns died young, at the age of just 37), the tradition grew as his work became increasingly well-known posthumously, and a few centuries later it’s now an unmissable date in the Scottish calendar. As J. S. Blackie, the 19th-century scholar and educationalist, once said: “When Scotland forgets Burns, then history will forget Scotland”. There doesn’t however seem to be any danger of that; many famous people have been inspired by his work throughout history. John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men also takes its title from Burns’ poem To a Mouse, and J.D Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye was inspired by Comin’ Thro’ the Rye. Burns came from obscurity, born to work on his family farm in Ayr, but thanks to a local teacher employed by his father, he developed a writing talent as he grew up, becoming most famous for works such as A Man’s a Man for A’ that and Auld Lang Syne, now sung (albeit drunkenly and with no-one knowing all the words) worldwide to ring in the New Year. He is also responsible for that touching ode, Address to a Haggis. The unusual trajectory from poor labourer to poetic celebrity, means

FEATURE

that of all non-religious figures, only Queen Victoria and Christopher Columbus have more statues in their name than Burns has worldwide and it’s no wonder that the Scots want to keep up the tradition of celebrating the bard – Burns is said to generate around £200m annually for the Scottish economy. The Burns Night celebration in his honour typically includes recitations of these poems and songs and most importantly the feast or Burns supper. The crowning glory of any table’s fare on this celebration will be the love-it-or-hate-it Haggis, which is generally served with mashed ‘neeps and tatties’ (that’s turnip or swede and potato to you and me). It’s definitely not to everyone’s taste and certain legal restrictions on some of its grisly contents mean it’s even currently banned from being imported into the USA. The dish is traditionally piped in at the supper, and honoured with Burns’ famous lines from Address to a Haggis, namely the ‘great chieftain o’ the pudding-race’. Other traditional Scottish dishes likely to be eaten are cock-a-leekie soup (chicken stock and leek, sometimes thickened with rice or barley), Cullen skink (a thick soup made of smoked haddock, potatoes and onions) and ‘Tipsy Laird’, similar to a sherry trifle but with whisky and raspberries. Along with boisterous ceilidh dancing, a speech to the ladies (also known as ‘the Toast to the Lassies’) is often undertaken. These words of wisdom can range from the flattering to the offensive – analysing woman as an element of the periodic table with properties such as “effective cleaning agent” and “may explode spontaneously without prior warning” may however not go down so well, and erring on the side of caution is generally advised since the toast invites a retort, the reply from the lassies. Whisky is generally the drink of choice, and for some, Burns Night is always a good excuse to open an aged bottle or two. The Whisky Society in London is hosting its Burns(ish) night on January 28 where the focus is all on the whisky tasting, still with a half-time supper thrown in for good measure. Many other clubs and even restaurants in London host Burns celebrations, some of which we’ve highlighted on the right, so dig out a kilt and enjoy another excuse to celebrate this January. If anything, it’s a legitimate excuse to watch Braveheart again, and who wouldn’t be up for that?

Popular culture finds out why plant pots and popularity go hand in hand at The Parlour

AIMEE LATIMER

S

ecuring a table in the bar section of The Parlour around 6.30pm on a Thursday, or any week day for that matter, is the thing of Canary Wharf legend – like spotting the Thames seal or getting a free coffee at Pret A Manger just because. From 6pm, or 5pm if you’re knocking off early, The Parlour becomes one of the liveliest places on the whole estate. As the offices pile out, the bar becomes packed with a mix of suits winding down after work and people reviving up for the evening. The interior is part of the appeal – warm, inviting and just on the right side of kitsch with cushions stacked on the stairs for perching, candles scattered precariously close to the sloping alcohol and even a bowl of sweets in the ladies toilets. (Unable to enter the men’s I can only guess what’s in there). If you’re in the market for something a little more substantial than a cocktail (which here will arrive dressed to the nines, with just some of the drinks we spotted including espresso martinis balancing chocolate fingers on the rim and drinks served in empty golden syrup tins), be sure to come for a drink and stay for the food. To avoid the crush of the bar, diners can sit in a designated restaurant section, which funnels in the buzzing atmosphere of the place, without the noise. Here, you’d be mistaken for thinking The Parlour’s popularity as a waterhole means it serves pub food.

However, yes, you’ll find the likes of burgers on the menu, but we’re not talking McAnything, oh no, here they’re lamb burgers with feta and tzatziki, or Wagyu beef burgers, topped with blue cheese. The Parlour’s menu fits on an A4 page, but the variety is impressive: if you’re trying to please a big group you can’t fault a place who serves both whole Scottish lobster and bangers and mash – and both well. We personally narrow it down to the 10 oz rib-eye, which – like all The Parlour’s steaks – has been hung for 21 days, the quality immediately obvious on the first bite. We get a side of crunchy, salt-splattered sweet potato fries, which arrive in a plant pot – there’s a theme here and traditional crockery isn’t it. We also try the super food salad, because it’s January so we have to at least pretend to be detoxing. The salad comes with its calories listed – for those intent on losing the Christmas wobble – and a fresh mix of broccoli, feta, mint and sesame with the option to add chicken, lobster or salmon. Fresh to the point of crunchiness, each bite is moreish and packed full of smug-inducing healthiness. If you’ve somehow had your fill of The Parlour’s signature cocktails, wine wise the menu spans from a more than drinkable house white, to the rather special Sancerre Lucien Crochet and Obra Prima Reserva Malbec. When it came to dessert we couldn’t chose between a gooey brownie or the flaming Baked Alaska, so had no choice had to indulge in the mini pudding shots: a brilliant platter of fantastic chocolate brownie, a wagon wheel of meringue, sorbet and shortbread, and berry-rich crumble. Oh, and we also had our eye on that espresso martini… The Parlour, The Park Pavilion, Canada Square, London E14, 0845 468 0100; theparlourbar.co.uk

Malliouhana has re-opened after a three-year closure, so if you’ve never been to the celebrated resort on Anguilla in the Caribbean, now’s the best time. Set on 20 acres of white sand beachfront, opening up the sea views was a prirority of the redesign – light, airy spaces and ocean-view rooms now flow seamlessly to the outdoor cliff-top restaurant. Former New York Michelin-starred chef Jeremy Bearman is in charge of cuisine, taking advantage of a wealth of locally sourced seafood and herbs. malliouhana.aubergeresorts.com

Creator of fine and rare wines Bernard Magrez, and French gastronomy legend and global ambassador Joël Robuchon have teamed up in Bordeaux, for the creation of a unique boutique hotel experience. Both the rooms and restaurants demonstrate luxurious French artisanal decor. With only six suites in the classical 19th century townhouse, but two (Michelin-star hopeful) restaurants, the focus is clearly in favour of the food, with no less than 259 accompanying wine options. lagrandemaison-bordeaux.com

hite sand, palm-fringed beaches and bathwater-warm turquoise sea: with all of these as standard, you wouldn’t think that Maldivian resorts had to try very hard at all. But perhaps because these are a given, the most starry of five stars, the most luxe of luxury islands, have entered into an opulence arms race, offering underwater spas, even-further-underwater nightclubs, superstar DJs, Michelin-star chefs, golf courses and mega yachts. So the fact that Six Senses Laamu has been brave enough to rely on location rather than glamorous gimmicks, feels like a breath of fresh sea air. It is, admittedly, harder to get to than many tourist islands, which can be accessed via just a quick boat trip. After an 11-hour flight to Malé spent among champagnesipping honeymooners, we are whisked onto a domestic flight far, far south, to Kadhdhoo, briefly baffled to be

surrounded by the sort of mahogany-tanned men more often seen catching gnarly waves on Bondi. But disembarking at the tiny airport, tripping over the huge pile of surfboards in arrivals, it became clear why they’re here. The most popular destination in the island nation for surfers, this is the jump-off point for the live-aboard boats that dot the ocean. As they pile onto their floating hotels, we board the 15-minute boat to the pristine Olhuveli Island, sipping homemade lemonade and handing our shoes over to the smiling captain. We wouldn’t, he explained, need them for the next week (I make him promise to give them back though – they’re Marni, thank you very much – while I make a mental note to book a pedicure). The only hotel in the Laamu Atoll, the Six Senses, which opened in 2009, doesn’t suffer from the ills that can plague those closer to Malé: no litter floating on glassy sea towards the sugar-fine sand, no constant buzz

of speedboats or seaplanes ferrying other five-star guests to their island hideaways. It is so quiet, in fact, that the only noise we can hear from our bolthole for the week – an exquisite Ocean Water Villa – is the crash of waves breaking beyond the coral reef. Decorated in what can only be described as Robinson Crusoe chic, our vast suite, which stands on stilts at the end of a curving jetty, has a huge terrace and plunge pool, outdoor bathroom (don’t worry, the loo is indoors, but the room has a glass bottom to keep you occupied – as, in fact, does the bath outside). There is also a comfy crow’s nest above, which, in original designs, was going to have a gimmick I do approve of: a water slide to launch you down to the surf below (I can only imagine health and safety had them canned – killjoys). Still, if you tire of the plunge pool or lounging around in the sun there is still direct access from each villa to the sea, via the rather more dignified if slightly less speedy method of

a short flight of wooden steps. Tempting as it is to spend all our time in this driftwood and turquoise, cushion-strewn oasis (OK, so we might have done that for the first 24 hours – but in our defence, the room service burgers are very good indeed), the island offers too many temptations to stay put. It’s larger than your average resort, so things are best accessed by bike. These are provided free by the resort (they even adjust the comfortably padded seats for you!) and helpfully have each guest’s initials etched onto a driftwood plaque on the back. Smooth, shaded paths loop the island, the only traffic golf-buggies and other cycling guests. First stop: the all-day ice cream café offering scoops in 50 inventive flavours (the burned milk becomes a favourite), then the jungle cinema, showing evening movies on an outdoor screen. Then we head to the Six Senses spa, with its wickerwalled outdoor treatment rooms. It is full of Zenned-out

And I think it looks really hard. So does my husband – he decides he will watch me, Mojito in hand, from the beach. The watersports instructor, one of the most experienced in the region, takes daily group lessons for beginners, which start on the sand. You might think this sounds like the easy part. You’d be wrong. Perhaps I’m more mal-coordinated than most (admittedly, I do still have problems with my left and right…), but getting from lying face down to an elegant sort-of-squatting position without face-planting in the sand proved somewhat tricky. Trying to do the same thing on an actual wave? I think it’s safe to say I’m not a natural talent at this sort of thing. But it is a completely joyful experience, no small thanks the team’s good humour and patient encouragement, and for a more experienced surfer there are a good selection of different surfing points around the island, some of them among the most celebrated in the Maldives. And my husband heartily recommends the Mojitos. For nature lovers too the island has much to offer.

creatures – and at certain times of year will accompany you to meet them for yourself (a troop of them made their debut from their sandy nest during the manager’s weekly get-to-know-you drinks – cue gasps of delighted guests). Offshore, there are rays to be swum with and the reef to be explored, either by snorkel or by scuba. When the time finally came for us to board the boat back to the mainland it is safe to say we were thoroughly relaxed, absurdly spoiled, radiantly sunkissed, and already planning our next visit. Now, where are my shoes…?

ome to Malays, Chinese and Indian migrants and, until 1957, British colonialists, Kuala Lumpur has a rich mix of architectural influences to its name. The contemporary National Mosque of Malaysia, with its vibrant blue and turquoise roof that’s made to look like a half-open umbrella, sits close to St Mary’s Anglican Cathedral, which wouldn’t look out of place in an English village. Both competing to show off as much colour as possible: Chinatown’s narrow alleys and chock-full streets are a blunt contrast to Little India, which is best visited after dark for its night markets with stalls peddling vivid fabrics and delicious flavours. You’ll also spot plenty of Moorish-style colonial buildings, such as the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, completed in 1910, intended to fuse British Neoclassical Renaissance architecture with Islamic design. And then there are the dazzling modern skyscrapers, with new ones stacking up on the horizon all the time. It’s worth braving the vertigoinducing high-speed lift up the 452m-tall Petronas Twin Towers; if you’re lucky you’ll see tropical mist mingling with the mountains at the edge of the city sprawl. But Kuala Lumpur locals, who affectionately shorten the city’s name to KL, are proud of its retail offerings. Shopping is one of Malaysians’ favourite pastimes and KL does malls particularly well. On the lower floors of the Petronas Twin Towers, the Suria KLCC mall provides a home for Miu Miu, Chanel, Burberry and Salvatore Ferragamo, as well as plenty of other big-name international and Asian brands. Find more designer and boutique shopping, as well as a choice of beauty and grooming options, in the Starhill Gallery in Bukit Bintang. If you tire of cutting-edge fashion, stop off at the National Textile Museum for some beautiful, historical Malaysian clothing. The collection, inside the Moorish Sultan Abdul Samad Building, showcases traditional weaving, batik and embroidery techniques, and

intricately designed jewellery worn by Malaysians, including members of the Malay Royal Court, since before the 15th century. KL is very much a concrete paradise, so it’s easy to forget that it’s built in the midst of thick jungle, but the city’s Butterfly Park can transport you back. Wander down the narrow paths that cut through lush vegetation to find exotic plants and more than 120 different butterfly species. The sound of waterfalls and the sight of pulsing wings in every colour is almost enough to make you forget there’s a heaving city right outside.

Where to stay Brimming with 1930s character, the glamorous Hotel Majestic was, in colonial times, the location of big social events and government receptions. Today’s fully restored hotel still offers a full butler service, colonial cuisine and a renowned afternoon tea, which is best taken in the orchid room. The Majestic Spa is also worth a visit for its English Afternoon Tea experience, which uses afternoon tea-inspired products, with a garden berries massage, a blackberries-and-cream scrub and an English rose facial. There’s an in-house cinema that screens black and white films only, and the decadence extends to a Truefitt & Hill barber shop. As KL isn’t particularly walkable, the chauffeur service also comes in very handy. majestickl.com

Eating & drinking Said to have the best view in KL, the SkyBar at the Traders Hotel is the prime spot for a sunset cocktail. Sip the signature Kiwitini (fresh kiwi, Belvedere Vodka and Taittinger Brut), and watch the Petronas Twin Towers light up as night falls. shangri-la.com/kualalumpur/traders/dining

China’s flight boom  China’s growth in overseas travel is set to transform the travel industry. In 2014, tourist flights from the mainland exceeded 100 million, according to figures by the China National Tourism Administration. The number of travellers has increased hugely since 1998, when there were only 8,430,000 outbound tourists, and simplified visa procedures are part of the reason. Furthermore, business flights were predicted to have grown by 25 per cent by the end of 2014, with Jeff Lowe, general manager of avian consultancy group Asian Sky Group (ASG), explaining to Flightglobal that China intends to increase its 193 civil airports to 244 in 2020. cnta.gov.cn / asianskygroup.com

THE VERREUM VIRTUE 

SALES partner and department head at Knight Frank Canary Wharf, comments on the trends in the residential sales market ANDREW GROOCOCK,

By the time you read this we should have successfully manoeuvred through the quietest selling month of the year, and the dreaded December slow down will be a distant memory of overeating and drinking! What it does mean is that while there may have been a shortage of new properties coming onto the market and fewer sales being agreed, the market now has a lot of pent-up interest from buyers reinvigorated to get their purchase completed early in the New Year.

“Historically, while Christmas is a slow time for activity in the sales market, it is also a time for a huge amount of behind-the-scenes thinking” Historically, while Christmas is a slow time for activity in the sales market, it is also a time for a huge amount of behind-the-scenes thinking and reflecting to happen with both buyers and sellers. What this means is that a high number of properties should be coming to the open market for sale and in conjunction with this, levels of applicants should increase dramatically and as a result, a good market for both buyers and sellers is created. There is no doubt that the final quarter of 2014 became a much harder place for agents to operate in, with prices stalling for the first time in a number of months and sales becoming harder to agree. For this reason it is hugely important to make sure that you choose to work with experienced agents who have an in-depth knowledge of our property and the surrounding area, and as a result are in the best position to recommend your property to buyers. We are always ready to offer free appraisals at Knight Frank and look forward to meeting many of you during 2015 and giving you our best advice to help you both buy and sell properties.

Knight Frank Canary Wharf, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market

 HOBNOBBING If a kitchen is the heart of a home, it figures to tailor it to fit you and your family. La Cornue – family-owned since 1908 – is a leading name in luxury cookers. Its bespoke Chateau Grand Palais model is individually made to order in the Saint-Ouen l’Amumone workshop, just outside of Paris. Because each one is made to commission, you can chose from a range of materials from copper to enamel to cast iron, and personalised hob set-ups including solid brass burners, simmering plates and electric. And also, because after all that consideration you’d want the large 180 cm cooker to integrate with your kitchen, matching furniture from stand-alone islands to units are available to order too. As the Christmas lights dim and the roast turkey seems like a distant memory, we make plans to start our new year’s resolutions. We remember from years past what an exciting time it is within the lettings market for the final quarter of the financial year, and how quickly the rental market bounces back after the festive break. The final four months of 2014 saw ups and downs in the market with a very strong September and October, but strangely a slower pace in November than what we are used to. Serious applicants remained active in December with tenancies still being agreed as the last Christmas presents were wrapped. Stock levels continued to be low, but applicant levels were bursting from the seams giving our landlords a great opportunity to test the market and push prices a little higher. Recently, we have seen investors settling down now that the sales market has slowed and their portfolios are coming back to the lettings market due to the fantastic yields that are being achieved throughout E14, especially in the core and prime markets. In fact, we have seen an increase in new investors being attracted by some of the highest yields in London.

“It is still important that landlords instruct the right agent” Although the rental market in 2015 looks promising, it is still important that landlords instruct the right agent that can give the right advice and secure a corporate tenant at the correct rental quickly. We have all seen great apartments sitting idle and looking pretty on property portals with no activity as the price set was too high. Landlords must be realistic with their pricing and must look at the facts; rents for the last three months increased 1.4 per cent, not 14 per cent. Knight Frank remains the agent of choice for corporate tenants and investor landlords in the Docklands area. If we can be of any assistance in 2015, please do feel free to contact us.

STATE OF THE MARKET Change in rental values

Stamp Duty takes affect

LEE ALTER,

lettings manager at Franklyn James Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

ALASDAIR CARPENTER,

2014 saw rental values increase slightly month on month compared to 2013. The speed of these increases might have been slower than some expected, but this was certainly still a positive sign for homeowners and investors alike. We have just experienced a surprisingly busy Christmas period which saw a marked increase in tenants looking to secure a home in the New Year. This in turn has made for an excellent start to 2015 for landlords, who have been able to secure good quality tenants whilst achieving increased rental yields for their investments. Usually stock levels decrease during the festive season, however, fortunately for those currently flat-hunting, the quantity of available stock has gradually been increasing – although, the demand for these properties is also ever growing. Jason Taylor on stamp duty: “On 3 December 2014, it was announced that there would be immediate changes to the rules and regulations regarding stamp duty. The changes essentially mean that homebuyers no longer pay a flat rate of tax on the whole purchase price of a property, but rather a tiered rate on parts of the overall purchase price which fall above each threshold. For example, a homebuyer purchasing a property for £275,000 now pays £4,500 less tax than under the previous regulations. “It has been reported that the new rules could see a five per cent increase on property values at the lower end of the market over the next year, whilst at the other end of the spectrum buyers will have to pay 12 per cent on properties over £1,500,000 which might see the higher end of the market slow down next year.”

As you may be aware, back in December the government introduced a new system for stamp duty levy on UK property purchases. The changes are the biggest reform of stamp duty since Gordon Brown introduced the higher rate bands in 1997. The new progressive, income tax-style system will see the vast majority of homebuyers better off. The new scheme will replace the previous ‘slab style’ system that created house price jumps around the different tax thresholds; these should in theory now be eliminated and we should have a more transparent and consistent housing market. Whilst most purchasers will be better off, those buying north of £1 million will be worse off and those buying at the very top of the housing market spectrum will be considerably worse off. So 2015 could be very much a case of a two-speed market with the lower and middle tiers continuing to thrive and the top end of the market taking a backward step. In my opinion, this is a much better and fairer system of taxation and could be a potential vote winner in this year’s general election. It will be interesting to see where this leaves the issue of a mansion tax if Labour win the election. Would Ed Miliband introduce this on top of the new stamp duty regime? A reduction in tax for around 98 per cent of house purchasers can only be seen as a positive move and will likely to act as a stimulus to the UK housing market in 2015. Toward the tail end of 2014 the market had begun to slow, albeit marginally. Now both sellers and buyers seem reinvigorated and with lending rates at an all-time low I predict transaction volumes are likely to increase.
