EDITOR’S LETTER
From the
editor Success consists of getting up just one more time than you fall – Oliver Goldsmith
I
f you think about it, every piece of advice about success is really just about changing your mindset. From the old adage of life giving you lemons to the more direct approach favoured by my own confidants, ‘just bloody do it’ (my Irish relations have little truck with self-pity) – success is nearly always about simply deciding what you are going to achieve. As Lincoln famously said, ‘Most folks are as happy as they make up their mind to be.’ Whether you’re running a marathon or a bank, I really believe that mindset matters above anything else, and this month, I took the opportunity to meet with experts in this field, Andy Puddicombe and Rich Pierson. As founders of the number one health and fitness app in the world, Headspace, they are now focusing on the corporate world, looking to breathe some fresh air into a world that can ever-so-occasionally feel somewhat restricted. It’s an offer that has already been taken up by several high-profile names, including Reuters and Credit Suisse, not to mention half of the Cabinet and a quite a few GB gold medalists. It’s a bold move, but then fortune usually favours those. Now Canary Wharf is no stranger to the new, it’s a place built on the very concept. The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that I am, in fact, not Emma, but rather a new addition to this page. Having taken the reins from my talented predecessor, I hope to continue to bring you the very best in both luxury lifestyle and business insight. I have a fantastic team behind me here, all absolutely resolute on bringing you the inside track on everything from the latest fashion trends to the best hidden dining gems to head to when the sun finally comes out. And for the days when it doesn’t, well we’re back to the change of mindset again…

Oliver Cheshire:
MAN ABOUT TOWN As the British fashion industry celebrates another successful men’s showcase in the form of London Collections: Men, Gabrielle Lane is on-set with model-ofthe-moment Oliver Cheshire
t’s a Tuesday in May and having been given the opportunity to speak to model and rising star Oliver Cheshire just weeks ahead of London Collections: Men, we’ve pulled together Burberry, Gieves & Hawkes and a vintage Jaguar worth a rumoured £1 million with a week’s notice, taken him for lunch at the Baglioni and got him to ply his trade – brooding menswear fashion shots. The photographer wants cigarette-smoked, 60s-style stuff and Cheshire is good. He slinks his body around, flashing the odd grin and picking through the rails of blazers and shoes, naturally gravitating towards British brands. And, as the photographer implies, the whole thing becomes easy. Ten years after being scouted by Select Model Management as a 16-year-old schoolboy, Cheshire already has campaigns for Calvin Klein, D&G, Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith under his belt, and has been the face – and torso – of both Abercrombie & Fitch and Orlebar Brown. Anyone in doubt that modelling is something you can learn to do better should watch him in action. “You do get more comfortable in front of the camera,” he admits. “In the beginning, if a photographer put me ‘there’ [in position], I’d stay there, especially on a big shoot, but the more confident you get, the more you can bring to it.”

The ability to add something extra is becoming increasingly important. The men’s fashion industry in Britain was valued at £10.4 billion by market research firm Mintel in 2012 and is on course to have grown a further 11 per cent by 2017. Now in its fifth season, London Collections: Men continues to draw more than 130 designers and international brands to present their latest work, as well as the press and buyers from 37 countries keen to see it. For Cheshire, this growth brings more competition – “more guys want to do modelling,” – but also more opportunities. “There are a lot more shoots and also a lot more e-commerce. Before, you
“It’s my profession to look good, be healthy and sell clothes. If a footballer didn’t train every week, he wouldn’t get picked; it’s the same thing” could do a shoot for a magazine, now there’s a lot that are internet-based; you can end up shooting five times a week, which was unheard of 10 years ago.” Success in men’s fashion is dictated by uniqueness. Aside from his razor-sharp profile, Oliver Cheshire’s preppy, clean-cut image is relevant to both runway and high-street fashion and it’s something he’s aware of. “There is pressure to look your best and to be fit and healthy, otherwise you’d be doing yourself out of work,” he says, matter-of-factly. “It’s my profession to look good, be healthy and sell clothes. If a footballer didn’t train every week, he wouldn’t get picked; it’s the same thing.” In the past month he’s been shot for arty bi-monthlies and mainstream campaigns, celebrating finished projects with nights out, trips to St Tropez on the arm of his pop star girlfriend and personal appearances at the Monaco Grand Prix. Nice work if you can get it. However, while his boyish good looks are serving him well as he prepares to turn 26, the future doesn’t faze him. “I think male models earn most of their money aged 25 to 35. Men want to see ‘men’ in fragrance campaigns; they want to buy an aftershave fronted by a man. It’s not that they just get better, but they get used more with age, in bigger ads and for bigger suit companies,” he says. In his down-time he’ll admit that modelling might not last forever. “It’s hard to turn down work; you don’t have a fixed income obviously and you never know what’s going to come,” but the same nonchalance applies to starring in those – ever increasing – topless shots. “I do a lot of swimwear!” He laughs. “It’s flattering and it’s better that they stick me on a beach, than in the rain with a big coat on.”
While he may seem generally light-hearted, those around Cheshire are tipping him for big things, privately comparing his appeal to that of a young Leonardo DiCaprio. And although the acting arena will surely beckon one day – thanks to his passion for Meisner drama training – it is precisely his laid-back attitude that he regards as essential to his current career. “You have to have a good personality [to be a model] because if you were on a job with someone and they were moody, you wouldn’t book them again. No one wants to go away on a shoot for five days with someone with a bad attitude; because everyone needs to chip in… you need to be able to say ‘I’ll carry the bags and photography equipment up the hill’”. Fashion is, luckily, something he loves and understands. A style columnist for Telegraph Men and regularly named one of GQ’s Best-Dressed, Belstaff leather jackets, Grenson shoes, Savile Row tailoring and Hackett check-prints all make his ideal wardrobe. “I’ve always loved clothes and to dress well. When you’re a model you’re learning from the best. If you’re on a job with a stylist who says ‘this shape fits you well’ and ‘you look good in this’, then you know. I’ve learnt a lot in 10 years; even photography-wise, now I always know where the light is. I know how to work it – work it!” And with that he’s off, asking if he can take the Jaguar for a spin, with a final, infectious laugh.

know Words: Stephen Doig
L
ondon’s menswear tribes are a well known bunch; Savile Row boasts the share of bespoke suiting, St James is a haven of old world, gentlemanly charm and various pockets of East London have becoming cool enclaves of sartorial experimentation. But what’s interesting is that, now more than ever, there are a host of brands that operate relatively under the radar while boasting incredible history and impeccable, beautifully made clothes.
FINLAY & CO Founded in 2012 by entrepreneurs David Lochhead, Dane Butler and Tom Stannard, Finlay & Co.’s style credentials have been on the ascent since the fashion press became enamored with their beautifully crafted sunglasses. The brand’s beautifully made shades are rendered in wood, making them both environmentally sound and entirely innovative. The glasses are made entirely by hand and undergo a 16 step process to ensure they’re executed beautifully. Anna Wintour and Carla Sozzanni made a point of stopping by the brand’s stand at Milan’s Talent Corner fair earlier this year, with the revered editors’ making off with an engraved pair each; one of the USP’s is the label’s bespoke service, which engraves names or initials into the wood.

To look at the gauzy T-shirts, crisp polo shirts (as sported by a certain Daniel Craig in his role as James Bond) and sleek vests and swimwear (as sported by no less than Connery’s Bond), you’d be forgiven for thinking that this cult leisurewear label was entirely 21st century modern. While the aesthetic undoubtedly is, the history of this label reaches back almost as far as British heritage label Burberry; for all the cutting edge cool of the brand’s current identity, it has it’s roots firmly in traditional British craft. In founding Sunspel in 1860, textile magnate Thomas A Hill wanted to produce simple, classic pieces in impeccable lightweight, [Egyptian] Sea Island cotton; a dash of luxury next to the skin that works for everyday, if you will. Fine gauge cotton T-shirts swiftly became the mainstay (initially worn in Victorian England as underwear), along with the label’s underwear (which appeared in 1985’s famous Levi’s ‘launderette’ advert on male model Nick Kamen). In 2005, the brand were taken over by new owners, who remain faithful to the craft angle that makes Sunspel unique; the company’s site at Long Eaton is still where the pieces are made entirely by hand and has been since 1937.

S/ S 2014
With the quiet invasion of Scandinavian fashion sensibility on our high streets, there’s one particular name that stands out. Tiger of Sweden’s youthful, quirky appeal demonstrates deftly just how a historical brand can progress in the 21st century; the label was founded on the remote west cost of Sweden, in rural Uddevalla, in 1903. The founding tenets were based purely on practicality; Marcus Schwartzman and Hjalmar Nordstrom set about making solid suiting for clients who had little access to city-centric tailoring. One of the earliest suiting models was called ‘Tiger’, and the moniker stuck. Innovative cuts, slimmer silhouettes and experimentation with fabric production carved out a niche in mid twentieth century Sweden and, after a re-launch in the early 90s, the brand set about plotting world domination. Today, designers Tine Grandahl and Shena Neville create an aesthetic that’s clean, pared back and refined.

Franck Namani The last word in stealth wealth luxury, Paris-based fabric specialist and menswear label is a master class in peerless refinement. The finest materials – baby cashmere (combed from the underside of a Mongolian cashmere goat, no less), Egyptian cotton, plush fur and the most butter soft of leathers (crocodile anyone?) mean that the brand’s pared-down menwear is quietly luxurious.
Founded by the company’s impresario namesake, Namani is set to cater to London’s expanding wealth market this summer with a new store planned for Mayfair. Which means that those tactile crocodile skin bomber jackets, lightweight knits and casual blazers (each hand finished and trimmed in luxurious skins) will be gracing the decks of yachts and aboard private jets very soon.
Dom Reilly It was life on the road – quite literally – that prompted former Formula One executive Dominic Reilly to launch a range of impeccably made, beautifully executed luggage that married practicality with a sense of style and substance. Launched last year, the brand employ the most rigorous testing methods for each component of the accessories and luggage – a nod to Reilly’s F1 background. It’s an indicator of how exacting the quality testing is that the founder, Reilly himself, signs off every single product personally. With a recent collaboration with the Financial Times newspaper under their (suitably beautifully made) belt, the brand are focused on sharp, sleek accessories to carry the high-net-worth business traveller through from boarding gate to board room, with pieces that focus on making life for the frequent flyer as easy as possible: travel wallets, handsome luggage, neat card holders and watch holders, for example. Using the most butter soft of full grain leathers, these pieces guarantee an instant upgrade.

Prints charming
Built around four different concepts, including ‘Reinstatement of Origin’ and ‘Fallen Angel’, the Reiss A/W14 collection tells a story of contrasts and shifting identities. Ethereal and fluid silhouettes meet clean and architectural lines, while sharp monochromes contrast with pastels.
With a nod to its London heritage and the spirit of the 50s and 60s, L.K.Bennett’s A/W14 collection is both playful and nostalgic. This summer is no time for wallflowers, as designers have drawn upon the theme of abstract art by using inspiration from Matisse to Picasso. Chanel experimented with bold asymmetrical dresses pouring with colour, while Roland Mouret followed in a more subtle linear patterned way. What Elle Did Next Want to look like Elle Macpherson? Well you can’t. But her new Super Elixir green supplement might just get you a little bit closer… words: elle blakeman
I
f there is anyone worth listening to on the subject of how to look more beautiful – it’s Elle Macpherson. At 49, she looks as glossy as she did when she burst onto the modelling scene as ‘The Body’ in her early twenties. Up close, I can confirm that her skin is radiant and she has maintained a figure that women half her age would envy. No Photoshop needed here. So when The Body declared that she owes at least a portion of her good looks to supplements (the rest – water, genes and exercise – she can’t help you with), the beauty world was all ears. “People are beginning to understand how important the role of nutrition plays within beauty,” she says. After several years of taking super food supplements and greens (“So many pills and powders!”), Macpherson ended up in the chic office of leading Harley Street nutrition expert and fellow Aussie, Dr Simone Laubscher. “I went to her because I wasn’t feeling my best and I wanted to change that.” As a mother of two (Macpherson has two sons, Flynn, 16, and Cy, 11), businesswoman and model, life was taking it’s toll on her energy level: “I wasn’t feeling myself, I was finding life overwhelming and I was craving sugar.” After pouring her daily supplements onto Laubscher’s desk (“there were so many they covered my whole desk!” recalls the doctor), the pair decided to create a single supplement that would encompass them all, The – rather dramatically titled – Super Elixir. “It’s been a labour of love,” says Macpherson. “I wanted to create just one complete thing I could take every day. With
my partner, we created a company called WelleCo (‘wELLEco’) to share this with others.” About to turn 50, the model is keen to keep life simple. “This was my gift to myself, I don’t need more ‘things’, but health is really important to me and this is something I wanted to share with other women.” It’s not cheap – a jar will set you back £96 (although it is beautiful – heavy with an onyx hue, it looks like it belongs on a Hollywood starlet’s dressing table) – but it’s nothing compared to the money women spend on other products. “I wanted to create the Rolls of supplements. It is a bit more expensive but we choose the highest quality ingredients from suppliers in Australia and around the
INTERVIEW
globe. All are sourced from pure natural whole foods. “The bottom line for me was always the quality and sourcing of ingredients, which meant the efficiency was optimum. It is so important that the nutrients come from whole-foods so the body can recognise it as natural and will absorb it.” The Super Elixir contains a blend of 45 key ingredients, including alkalising super greens, Chinese herbs and – digestive enzymes, and surprisingly tastes pretty good – especially compared with some of the other super greens on the market. “We spent months on that!” she says. “It was important that we get that right or no one would take it!” It’s even got the stamp of approval from food and
lifestyle guru, Calgary Avansino, who says that she has a spoonful every single day. Aside from that, Macpherson’s tips include sunglasses, smiling and drinking plenty of water. “I asked my son Flynn what’s the one thing I’ve taught you and he said to drink water. He said: ‘I have a headache, you say “drink more water”; if I’m yawning a lot you say “drink water”; Before I go into an exam you say “drink Macpherson water!”.’ And he said: ‘well, you’re right, usually it works’.” So there you have it – water, smiling and a spoon of Super Elixir – it might not quite turn you into The Body, but it will probably move you in the right direction.
“This was my gift to myself, I don’t need more ‘things’, but health is really important to me and this is something I wanted to share with other women” Elle

JEWELLERY
Jewels, gems, pearls and diamonds; the essential components of any lady’s jewellery collection WORDS: OLIVIA SHARPE
Fly on the Wall Until the end of August, Nick Knight’s SHOWstudio on Motcomb Street has been transformed into a weird and wonderful chamber of curiosities as it plays host to contemporary jewellery designer Shaun Leane’s new exhibition. Notable works from the avant-garde designer include his very first creation, a finely crafted single diamond tusk earring which was first seen on Alexander McQueen’s catwalk in 1994, not to mention a whimsical 22-karat gold jewel beetle brooch. Each bespoke piece has been thoughtfully paired with a piece of art, fashion item or natural history specimen; a butterfly brooch sits next to an original Damien Hirst painting, for example, while an elaborate pair of feather hoop earrings is being shown alongside a Philip Treacy hat.

D Until 29 August
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Graff Diamonds’ Monaco Rare Jewels Exhibition; held at Hôtel de Paris from 29 July to 17 August, the annual event will once again present the house’s very finest luxury jewels and watches. Those of you who had the misfortune to miss this year’s Baselworld will be given another opportunity to see the most talked-about piece of the entire show; Graff’s multi-coloured diamond Hallucination watch, which broke the record for the most expensive timepiece ever created (at £33 million). Other remarkable pieces on display from the Graff Jewels collection will include stunning tiaras, opulent brooches and elegant Alice bands, along with timepieces from the Luxury Watches collection.

On a flying visit to London before the Vegas Couture Show, Texan-based jeweller Emily Armenta, whose eponymous jewellery brand launched 12 years ago, presented her latest collection. Incorporating ancient techniques such as micromosaic and stone layering, each piece within the new collection tells an intriguing story:
Parisian-born Raphaele Canot’s CV is certainly impressive; she has worked in jewellery design for the past 18 years at Cartier and De Beers. This May saw the designer break free from these historic jewellers with the launch of her first solo collection. Comprising 30 pieces and christened the Set Free Diamonds collection, it is aptly named to describe the range of wearable diamond pieces which have, quite literally, been set loose from their traditional gold settings. Pieces include delicate rings and mini hoop earrings in pavé or adorned gold, and revisited solitaire pendants.
“As with all my collections, I’ve tried to bring a piece of history forward and make it relevant to today. The new collection was inspired by the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca and his vision of ‘duende’, which is essentially the powerful beauty of life” – Emily Armenta

collection
ritish heritage jeweller Boodles has never actively sought out fame; however, being the creator of some of the most exquisite pieces of fine jewellery, it is only natural that on occasion it is in the limelight. One such example of this was just a few months ago when Channel 4 decided to go undercover at the 215-year-old British jewellery house in an exclusive documentary, The Million Pound Necklace: Inside Boodles. In a fascinating fly-on-the-wall exposé, the documentary revealed the work that goes into creating some of Boodles’ most celebrated suites, in particular the Greenfire emerald necklace, which is part of the most valuable set of jewels ever made by the house and is currently valued at £2.8 million. The show took us on a journey explaining how these precious gems are sourced before they are then entrusted to the design team in the firm’s UK-based jewellery workshops and transformed into wearable works of art. Three months later, Boodles has returned with a new collection of unique, designled creations. Ocean of Dreams is a couture collection of 11 one-off high jewellery pieces inspired by the mystery and magic of the
underwater world. Nicholas Wainwright, the chairman and creative director of Boodles, tells me how he fell in love with the concept as soon as his head designer Rebecca Hawkins pitched it to him: “It’s easy to see why the ocean has been the inspiration behind so many designs in the past; it’s so captivating and entices you with its elements of mystery.” Each suite, ranging from Atlantic Blue to Mermaid’s Tale, paints a whimsical picture of the ocean through its combination of diamond and coloured stones with delicate and intricate design motifs. Nicholas explains: “Dolphins’ Serenade, for instance, captures a series of dolphins’ fins as they emerge above the water by using marquise diamonds surrounded by smaller pavé set diamonds, while the Sea Star suite uses a more obvious pink and white diamond encrusted starfish motif.” At the unveiling of the collection at The Savoy last month, co-designer Lorna Shaw explained how the process of designing the collection, which took a total of two years, began with creating the Atlantic Blue Suite; featuring incandescent Paraiba Tourmalines, which has become somewhat of a trademark stone of the jewellery house, these were used to capture the ocean’s mesmerizing waters. For Shaw, this particular suite sums up the entire collection with its vibrant colour and intricate design. The majority of the stones, including the Paraiba Tourmalines,
CANARY WHARF | 57
were sourced two years ago in Basel and in the case of the Ocean Moon set, which features an array of sapphires, chalcedony and aquamarines, the design was centered on the stones themselves. Similarly, Pastel Reef pays tribute to the wealth of flora found in coral reefs through its combination of aquamarines, tsavorites, pink and yellow sapphires, and green and yellow beryls with diamonds, and in Deep Sea Treasure, freshwater pearls are used to depict the rare natural treasures which can be unearthed from the depths of the sea.
Couture collection Ocean of Dreams is inspired by the mystery and magic of the underwater world However, this was not the case for all the pieces. In Mermaid’s Tale, for example, chairman Nicholas comments that it was the design which came first: “This suite has been inspired by the most mythical of sea creatures and the way in which different elements of the mermaid subtly surface as you carefully inspect the cuff.” It features swirls of diamonds and platinum evoking the ripples that remain on the water after a vision of the sea maidens. Indeed, every single design tells its own enchanting story which goes beyond the wearer’s wildest dreams. While the design-led pieces are undoubtedly the most spectacular, Shaw predicts that the simplicity of the Dolphins’ Serenade, which includes classic drop diamond earrings made up of fin-shaped sections, will prove the most popular among clients.
Nicholas Wainwright has worked at Boodles for more than 43 years and he continues to be very much involved in all aspects of the business. He and his brother Michael (managing director) took over from their father in 1992 and Nicholas’ son Jody and his nephew James Amos are joint directors, proving the age-old expression that blood is thicker than water. Those of you who watched the Channel 4 documentary will remember that it was Jody who sourced the exceptional Colombian emeralds found in the million pound suite and according to Nicholas, he has taken over “the lion’s share of travelling”. However, the chairman is still heavily involved in the stone sourcing process. “I was in the Far East recently and bought some fabulous emeralds and rubies and combined this with some of my duties as Honorary Consul of Thailand.” Nicholas confides that it is very much the company’s plan to focus on design-led projects over the next two years and this is currently being headed up by Rebecca and her team of five world-class designers including Lorna Shaw. One of the many exciting projects in the pipeline is Boodles’ first watch, launching this October. “We feel that our brand is now at the right place for the watch to really make an impact. It is something that we have always wanted to do and it was a very natural transition for us. It will be a ‘jewellery’ watch featuring pink and white diamonds, and mother-of-pearl… we are all very excited!” Boodles is currently expanding its New Bond Street showroom and this is set to be completed in the spring of 2015. The flagship store will effectively double in size as it takes over premises on Albemarle Street. While Nicholas remains tight-lipped as to the surprises expected to be found in store, it is clear that still waters certainly do run deep. Even before World Cup fever swept the‌ er‌ world, the watch industry was already getting cosy with some of the finest domestic teams. ALEX DOAK asks why the luxury sector would suddenly become so interested in a mass-market sport

any moons ago, iconoclastic watchmaker Richard Mille hooked up with an obscure young tennis player called Rafael Nadal and made him a watch that cost in the region of £400,000. It was a high-tech piece so shock-resistant that the hard-hitting rookie could wear it when he played and when he started lifting trophies, which he did at Roland Garros in 2005. Mille then made a bright, white and super-light piece for another unknown sports star – a self-taught golfer called Bubba Watson, who, sure enough, went on to win the Masters, twice, with a magnesium-cased RM038 strapped to his left wrist, still ticking despite the American’s brutal 126mph swing. “Richard just has this amazing ability to pick future superstars of sport,” attests Beatrice Giusti, Mille’s communications director for Europe. “He can sense rising talent.” But despite his form on sports stars, the watch world was still left scratching its head when Mille announced a partnership with Manchester City FC in 2012. Sure, we’d all spotted a chunky titanium piece on Roberto Mancini’s wrist in the dug-out but what was the sponsor of a glamorous regatta in glitzy St Barths and the highly exclusive Le Mans Classic race doing, aligning itself with an ailing Premier League team whose directors could barely afford the resulting extratime-counter Mancini watch, let alone the fans? The ‘Mille effect’ has indeed come to pass, however, with Man City’s fairytale victory in the Premier League this year (Mancini-less, it must be said). And, would you believe it? Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and even FC Barcelona all now boast ‘official timekeeper’ partnerships; Rotary, Bulova, JeanRichard and Maurice Lacroix respectively. Elsewhere, just in time for the World Cup, Switzerland’s virtuoso but rather gnomic Parmigiani Fleurier aligned with the Confederaçåo Brasileira de Futebol, releasing a version of its Pershing Yachts chronograph in the Brazilian colours (go figure). Hublot is keeping time on the World Cup as a whole, peppering the streets of Rio with oversized clocks and making friends with the legendary Pele and Roy Hodgson. Even TAG Heuer – already blessed by

the visages of Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Maria Sharapova – added the greased, cherubic features of Cristiano Ronaldo to its brand-ambassador roster in May, fresh from his Champions League victory with Real Madrid. Although he was playing for his country in the World Cup at time of going to press, there was a hairy moment when competing in Rio with Portugal looked unlikely thanks to injury, which would indeed have been just as painful for TAG Heuer’s marketing department. But, for all the glamour and global exposure of this summer’s World Cup, what could possibly be motivating luxury watch brands to align with a traditionally working-class sport – brands more likely to be seen adorning the hoardings of polo pitches
and F1 paddocks? As you’d expect, the official line being towed by the press releases cites shared values of precision, excellence and team spirit. However, some brands are being rather more honest about the market leverage such alignments afford. “London as a global city and capital is the perfect platform for JeanRichard to welcome our clients and visitors,” said JeanRichard’s CEO Bruno Grande, fresh from a reassuringly impressive display of skill on the hallowed turf of the Emirates during the recent launch. “But Arsenal has a great visibility in a lot of countries; they reach all the way to an especially big following in the US and Asia. As one of the leading teams of the English Premier League [EPL],” Grande concludes, “and one of the ‘best to watch’ soccer clubs in the world, the Gunners were, in our opinion, the perfect fit.” Apparently, the critical factor here is the global audience that the EPL enjoys – especially in the Swiss

watch industry’s most important market, Asia. As a recent BBC Online report attests, England gave football to the world, but nowadays a more accurate description is that England sells football to the world. A new EPL TV deal running from 2013-16 is worth nearly £5.5 billion, and more than £2 billion of this comes from the sale of overseas rights. Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia paid £650 million between them. Any Briton who has visited southeast Asia will more than likely have been asked by locals whether they support Chelsea or Man U – something that invariably irritates diehard West Ham fans as much as football refuseniks. So why do Asians love the EPL so much? As for many British businesses, the language helps. The time zone helps too; games that traditionally kick off at 3pm in
England will be broadcast at primetime in south-east Asia. As traditionalist fans find to their irritation, weekend matches are even staggered to maximise both the UK and Asian TV audiences. This popularity is good news for TV networks, but also great business for producers – luxury watchmakers and jersey manufacturers alike. As Alice Tsang, an economist for Hong Kong’s Trade Development Council, attests: “Apparel such as football strips and jackets are the most popular items among the fans in Hong Kong. Apart from fashion items, a number of traditional English football clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool have even set up lucrative soccer schools in Hong Kong and China respectively.” Tsang cites the rising middle-class income and purchasing power in the East as reasons for making higher priced football-related merchandise, such as luxury watches, a more viable commercial proposition nowadays. “Also,” she says, “by manufacturing one-of-a-kind, long-lasting memorial watches for historic football teams, it reinforces the Swiss brands’ prestigious image for far longer than this seasons’s home strip.” Whether the trend as a whole proves to be as durable as the watches themselves is yet to be seen. But given younger fans’ slavish devotion to their favourite players, a newfound passion for Swiss watches among footballing fans worldwide may be here to stay. Watch this space.

he peace and quiet of a sleepy corner of West Sussex is about to be shattered. I ease myself into the functional – make that stark – cockpit of the beast and switch on the ignition… And then scrabble about for a few moments to find the starter control in amongst a bank of 11 identical toggle switches. Once located, I flick the switch and all hell breaks loose. The 6.2-litre V8 spits into life, clearing its throat via a pair of vast exhaust pipes that exit underneath the doors. The initial bark reduces to a low rumble as the engine warms up, but the local wildlife has already taken fright, birds scattering as it fired up. And now it’s time to frighten a few fellow road users. This is not a car to drive if you want to remain below the radar. If it looks like a racecar that’s made a bid for freedom, that’s because it is. Sort of. It’s a Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupé, built in 2014 but closely based on a rare Le Mans racer from the early 1960s. Fifty years ago, racing legend Carroll Shelby had taken the lithe AC Ace, shoehorned a Ford V8 engine under the bonnet and then fed it steroids to create the AC Cobra. It became a highly successful GT racing car, but a far from aerodynamic shape and an open cockpit meant it was at a huge disadvantage at Le Mans. At the end of the three-mile-long Mulsanne Straight it was 30mph down on cars like the closed Ferrari 250 GTO. The solution was to give the Cobra a roof. The resulting Daytona Cobra Coupé featured wind-cheating bodywork and an abrupt, aerodynamically efficient Kamm tail that helped it reach a top speed of more than 190mph. Named after the American Daytona 24 Hour race, just six Cobra Coupés were made between 1964 and 1965. And they were pretty successful, winning their class at Le Mans as well as claiming the 1965 World GT title. Today, they are either in museums or private collections… And they are valuable: one was sold in 2009 for £4.3m. In other words, you won’t often see them out on the road. A few decades later, the Hi-Tech Automotive Company decided to build a replica and even got racing ace Peter Brock to update the design. The result was the Superformance Brock Coupé, which immediately won a writ from the famously litigious Carroll Shelby for copyright infringement, passing off and anything else he could think of. But while makers of AC Cobra replicas have been forced to think again, the Superformance story has a happy ending. This time, Shelby had a close look at one of the South African-built cars first. He was so impressed by its quality and the way Brock’s updates were in tune with the 21st century yet didn’t lose the raw appeal of the original, that he granted the company a licence to call them Shelbys, and they even have ‘proper’ CSX9000 series chassis numbers. At around this point, British businessman and successful championship-winning ‘gentleman’ racer
Nigel Hulme enters the story. A past owner of one of the most famous Cobras of all – known by its registration plate 39 PH – Hulme came across the Superformance Daytona. He fell in love with its looks and specification and quickly secured a deal to be the UK importer and representative for the car through his company Le Mans Coupes Ltd, which also imports replica Ford GT40s built by Hi-Tech. And this is what he’s selling. With prices starting at around £120,000, you are getting an extraordinarily rare beast that evokes the spirit of the original racer, but which is tamed for today’s crowded roads. Though not tamed much. Yes, it has creature comforts – air conditioning, electric windows, a leather and alcantara interior – but to drive it remains a raw, visceral experience. His white demonstrator is the ‘baby’ of the range. Powered by a 6.2-litre V8 from General Motors (as used in the Chevrolet Corvette) it has 425 hp. But those with deep pockets and big boll… er, confidence in their ability behind the wheel can opt for more powerful units, including a supercharged V8 delivering more than 650 hp. The original Daytona borrowed its chassis from the Cobra, which was considered old-fashioned even then. The update has fully independent suspension front and rear with coil springing, rather than the cart springs of the original. The chassis has been stiffened for improved handling with revised geometry to permit the fitment of traditional and better-looking deep-dish wheels. It is also a little longer and taller than the original to provide more interior space, while there’s a little more side glass for improved visibility. It’s also surprisingly practical, with a large boot nestling behind that huge rear window. On the road, though, it’s not about practicality. Yes, you can trickle happily through traffic, but what you really need are the open road, quick reactions, a strong left leg to operate the competition clutch and an equally positive grip on the curiously-angled gear lever. Not that you need to change gear too often, such is the engine’s pulling power… put it this way, jam your foot down as you join the top of a slip road and you’ll be breaking the law long before you hit the motorway itself. Quick? Oh yes… how does a sub four-second time for the 0-60mph sprint and more than 200mph max sound? Naturally, the noise is just glorious. Want to know more about its fuel consumption or exhaust emissions? Sorry, you’re reading the wrong road test. With neither traction aids nor ABS, and not to mention an excess of power over grip, the Daytona Cobra Coupé needs to be handled with respect. But that just adds to the fun. But its best trick is undoubtedly the way it turns heads. So rare is the original that only a handful of people will know what it is you’re driving… but those who don’t will know the Daytona is something very special indeed.

Shavuot Celebrations Canary Wharf Group recently joined together with international law firm Clifford Chance LLP to celebrate the Jewish festival of Shavuot. The festival commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Torah to the nation of Israel assembled at Mount Sinai. It is commonly celebrated by decorating homes and synagogues with flowers and the consumption of dairy foods like milk, cheese or cake. Entering in to the spirit of the occasion, Canary Wharf hosted an event at the offices of the international law firm which was widely attended by employees of Canary Wharf Group and a number of local Jewish organisations, such as the Jewish Community Day Centre and Nightingale House. Daniel Seliger from Canary Wharf Group commented: “We were delighted to welcome people of all different ages from the Jewish community to join in the festivities which mark this special time in the Jewish calendar.”

BIG BET GAME With a greater risk – and greater returns – there is a growing appetite for specialist funds. From gold to healthcare, we look at the best areas to invest in words: JEN HILL
I
nvestors are showing a growing appetite for specialist funds in areas such as biotech, property and gold. The AXA Framlington Biotech, Aberdeen Property Share, Polar Capital Healthcare Opportunities and BlackRock Gold & General funds all featured in the top 20 funds purchased through Barclays Stockbrokers earlier this year. Provided investors are cognisant that investing in niche areas is high risk – and generally only advisable for those with big enough portfolios to have a good spread of assets
– backing specialist sectors has great potential. Patrick Connolly, a certified financial planner at Chase de Vere, the independent financial adviser, says many investors are keen to look to specialist sectors or certain geographical regions in the hope of boosting returns, but warns: “Specialist investments usually come with greater risks and so aren’t usually suitable for cautious investors or those with smaller portfolios where a downturn could have a significant effect on their overall wealth.” We asked independent investment experts for their top five specialist sector recommendations…

HEALTHCARE Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management has “done very well” out of healthcare equities over the last two years. However, global strategist Edward Smith adds: “We may look to reduce exposure now that the increased representation of biotech in healthcare portfolios may have altered both the risk and return profile for the broader sector.” Chelsea Financial Services, the discount broker, is not keen on biotech, given that it has already had a good run, but still likes the wider healthcare sector. Research director Juliet Schooling Latter believes US healthcare reform will be key for the sector this year. “Obamacare kicked off in January 2014 and could potentially bring more than 20 million more people into the US healthcare system,” she says. “Hospitals will see more patients come through
“Obamacare… could potentially bring more than 20 million more people into the US healthcare system” and have fewer ‘bad debts’ – what uninsured people treated in A&E were classed as. Distributors will benefit from more prescriptions, and medical device companies will benefit from increased patient volumes. “There is a significant part of the population that has had an unmet medical need for some time. This pent-up demand will provide a boost for companies that offer certain medical products, like replacement hips and knees.” She likes the AXA Framlington Health Fund and Polar Capital Global Healthcare Growth & Income Trust. A broader US equity fund like Miton US Opportunities also taps into this theme.
2 AFRICA
Investing in the developing world is not for the faint-hearted, but Schooling Latter at Chelsea Financial Services likes frontier markets like Africa for its low correlation with other asset classes. “The region is becoming more investible: of the 54 countries there are 26 stock markets, 10 of which are worthy of investment,” she says. “There are various themes to play, including land and resources, infrastructure (in particular the growing telecoms market) and the emerging consumer. Did you know there are more middle-class households in Africa than in India? “It is still a higher risk investment, though, and liquidity needs to be watched closely. The Kenyan stock exchange has a smaller market cap than Tesco! But it is one of the largely untapped regions of the world.”

COMMODITIES If you get your timing right with specialist funds you can massively outperform mainstream indices, but the reverse is also true and commodity funds have had a tough time, especially gold, over the last few years. Canaccord Genuity remains “very negative” on gold, expecting the price to fall to around $1,000 an ounce by the end of 2015 from a recent high of $1,898 in 2011 and a level of $1,376 earlier this year. However, Fidelity Solutions likes BlackRock Gold & General, managed by Evy Hambro. The fund does not hold physical gold or metal, but invests in gold mining, commodity and precious-metal related shares. Jeremy Le Sueur, managing director of 4 Shires Asset Management, likes another of Hambro’s funds, BlackRock World Mining. “The recovery in the world economy means there is light at the end of the tunnel for commodity markets,” says Le Sueur. “Since October last year industrial commodity prices have risen by four per cent, but more

She believes the Alquity Africa Fund is worthy of consideration. Unconstrained by its benchmark, its geographic allocation is much more diverse than most comparable funds, which tend to have the lion’s share of assets invested in South African companies and just a small amount in other markets. “The companies in which it [Alquity Africa] invests tend to be larger to help liquidity,” says Schooling Latter. “The managers also have sustainable investing at the heart of their process, so are looking for companies that not only work well with the environment, but also are not anti-competitive, have good labour relations and good governance. “25 per cent of their fee revenue is donated to fund microfinance in Africa, helping to create jobs and small businesses.”
Property is a more mainstream specialist sector. For income-seeking investors in particular, some diversification into property could be beneficial, even for those with modest pots of money. Connolly at Chase de Vere says: “Commercial property can provide consistent long-term returns and this, coupled with its diversifying nature providing some protection from stock market falls, means we typically recommend exposure of 5-15 per cent. “The short-term outlook is improving in line with the wider UK economy. Sentiment is improving and we are seeing a great deal of new money being invested. This is likely to lead to strong returns in 2014.” The advisory firm favours ‘bricks and mortar’ funds, as these have far less correlation to the stock market and are less volatile than investing in property shares. It uses Henderson UK Property, Ignis UK Property, L&G Property Trust and M&G Property Portfolio. Fidelity Solutions likes Ignis UK Property, Aviva Investors Property Trust and HSBC Open Global Property.

“The recovery in the world economy means there is light at the end of the tunnel for commodity markets” importantly the reduction in spending on new mines and mine expansions means that supply is moving more into balance with demand. Capacity utilisation in the US should go over 80 per cent in the coming year, which historically has seen some price inflation.” Ben Yearsley, head of investment research at Charles Stanley Direct, tips the agriculture sector for long-term growth. “The world’s population is growing and the diet is changing from a largely subsistence-based one in many parts of the world towards a more conveniencebased one,” he says. He likes the Sarasin Agrisar Fund, which invests from field to fork – looking across the whole agriculture chain for the best opportunities.

TECHNOLOGY Despite talk of a tech bubble, Yearsley at Charles Stanley Direct is a “big long-term fan” of this sector. “Tech continues to revolutionise the world,” he says. “Just look at how Facebook is dominating, with almost one billion users. Obviously, the prices it has paid for some of its recent acquisitions – Whatsapp, for example [at $19 billion] – look on the high side, but strategically it owns the social media space now. Tech makes companies more efficient.” Schooling Latter of Chelsea Financial Services points to the sector’s far-reaching scope. “It’s not all just about the internet,” she says. “It spans almost every other sector, from retail space to education to healthcare. The things we can do with technology are forever increasing. “This means the sector is very diverse and, while one area may be struggling as economic woes cause companies to cut their IT spend, others will do well because of austerity and the efficiencies they offer.” She likes the AXA Framlington Global Technology and GLG Technology Equity Funds. Yearsley’s favourite fund in the sector is GLG Technology Equity – a fund also favoured by Fidelity Solutions.

The
Hidden Enemy With cyber crime at an all-time high, Susan Mackenzie investigates the damage that can be done by online security breaches
R
obberies at UK high-street banks have fallen 90 per cent in the last 20 years as security measures outsmart even the most determined thieves. That’s the good news. The bad news is that criminals are finding other ways in to banks that don’t involve a getaway car. Cyber crime has emerged as a top concern for UK financial institutions. It is ranked alongside international terrorism as a Tier 1 Threat by the Government’s National Security Strategy, while Britain’s intelligence agency GCHQ has said it is seeing “industrial espionage on an industrial scale”. Despite such stark warnings, 93 per cent of large UK corporations were hit by security breaches during 2012-2013. Barclays and Santander were targeted last year by thieves using a socalled keyboard video mouse, which allows perpetrators to remotely siphon off cash from customer accounts. The World Federation of Exchanges revealed in July 2013 that more than half of the world’s exchanges experienced a cyber attack in the past year. Last December, cyber thieves stole 40 million credit and debit card records at point of sale terminals from US retail giant Target. Recent estimates by global software security company McAfee put the global cost of cyber crime at between $300 billion to $1 trillion, but industry experts say that measuring the true cost is incredibly difficult. More critical than any single figure, according to Matthew Allen, director of financial crime for the BBA, is understanding the nature and scale of the risks. EJ Hilbert, head of cyber investigations at Kroll EMEA and a former FBI special agent, agrees: “Are finance companies taking the cyber threat seriously enough? Absolutely. The issue is whether they truly understand
what the threats are and how to act on them.” Attacks are not always directed against the bank, with criminals often zeroing in instead on easier pickings, such as employees. Richard Millett, senior instructor at IT training group Firebrand Training, says: “People want to be connected all the time. When they leave their office, they do not always take care to understand how they are connected or to whom. This leaves the door open for thieves to lift passwords and credentials.” Andrew Taylor, CEO of Bronzeye, the crisis management and commercial intelligence specialists, agrees that a major part of the problem is a lack of training and the use of third-party vendors. “Every time there is a new layer of IT infrastructure, a new way to interface with the bank, it can open holes within security. The bank itself might seem secure but if you can get in through the basement with the third party vendor, you can sneak along the corridor and climb up the stairs. It’s the equivalent of standing outside with the smokers and just walking back in with them.” Hilbert has another analogy to get the message across to banks and their employees. “Think about your house,” he says. “How many doors and windows do you have? Then if you consider that a computer has more than 69,000 doors and windows – how do you make sure they are all closed? If you have more than one key for your house, your car and your office then you better have more than one password.” The consensus view is that building a strong security network comes down to awareness, training and education of employees. Millett teaches “ethical hacking”, which is designed for employees tasked with protecting banks’ systems about the mind-set of the

TECHNOLOGY
hacker. “If you know how the bad guy thinks, you can be proactive rather than reactive,” he says. In addition to employee awareness, collaboration amongst banks and financial groups has a critical part to play. “It is a very shortsighted view if you think that you are the only one who is being attacked,” says Hilbert. Some experts have questioned whether banks are really open to sharing sensitive information with competitors, but Allen of the BBA points out that there are already a number of mechanisms in place for banks to collaborate. The Government’s Cyber Information Sharing Partnership (CISP) allows industries to exchange data on cyber incidents, and the BBA is working towards greater engagement between member banks and international bodies, such as Europol, the European Commission and the United Nations. “It needs to be an international and cross-sectoral collaboration,” says Allen. The war against cyber crime is relentless. Threats are being devised daily and success often comes down to how quickly banks can fix cracks in their security. Millett says to an extent “They are fighting an ongoing battle because as soon as you patch one hole, another one will appear”. Companies have a hard fight to stay ahead of the hackers. “Criminal methodologies are changing constantly,” says Allen. This is a challenge of global dimensions.”

Mind over
MATTER Mindfullness might sound a bit out there for the corporate world, but can it actually improve the bottom line? Headspace founders Andy Puddicombe and Rich Pierson certainly think so… words: Elle Blakeman

ou’re really not that important. I hate to break it to you but you’re not. That ‘always available, checking emails at all hours’ thing that you do, that could stop, and the world wouldn’t. But of course you won’t, you’re probably reading this with one eye on your iPhone, eating your tuna melt and half thinking about what train you need to get tonight. In fact, when was the last time you remembered just being present – thinking about nothing other than the right here, right now? As D.H. Lawrence once said: “The living moment is everything”. Mindfullness is nothing new, as a practice it goes back 3,000 years; meanwhile, the great and the good have long declared that the present is all we have – the future and the past merely a story we tell ourselves. For the CrackBerry generation who demanded everything faster – communication without delay, entertainment without ad breaks – we can also add fast-forwarding our mid-life crisis phase, with breakdowns, job quitting and leather jackets coming out at 25, rather than 45. That is exactly where Rich Pierson was when he first went to see meditation expert and former Buddist monk Andy Puddicombe. “Yeah, I was mental,” he says. “I can flippantly laugh at it now but at the time I was completely burnt out.” At just 26, Rich’s years in advertising had left him an unhappy combination of lost and uninspired. “I really, definitely had no idea at all about how to be happy or to have any notion of what was going on in
my head,” he says. “Everything seemed very, very confusing. And when Andy taught me, I was desperate – I would say I had the gift of desperation, because I think it was a gift – and meditation had a very quick impact. “I genuinely don’t think my story is unique in any way. So many of my friends probably drink a bit too much, or maybe do something else to cope – people who are using all sorts of things to kind of get over what modern life brings, which is a hell of a lot of stress and a hell of a lot of information.” Edward Hallowell, MD, author of CrazyBusy: Overbooked, Overstretched, and About to Snap! agrees: “The great thing about modern life is you can do so much,” he says, “and the curse of modern life is you can do so much.” In a globalised world where an overloaded to-do list is a status symbol, BlackBerrys, iPhones and 24/7 access to emails conspire to push us further over the edge – promising that we can do more than ever before, but fragmenting our attention to focus on anything fully. We live in an age where there are actually websites invented to stop us going on other websites, a sort-of online sponsor for information addiction. How ironic. Andy, who mastered his craft over a ten-year stint in Asia, is both very normal and very soothing. It is a testament to the effectiveness of the Headspace app that his voice instantly lulls me into a state of calm. Considered and articulate, it’s not soporific, but rather it has a way of pulling you into the present. He returned from the Far East with the aim of

“demystifying meditation”. Arguably, going where he was most needed, he consulted with people in high-ranking positions: politicians, athletes and business leaders, working at a one-on-one level for several years before he met Rich, and as with so many power duos – Ernst and Young, Ben and Jerry, Sonny and Cher – that was that. Rich’s marketing background combined with Andy’s experience led them to take what had previously been quite a grassroots campaign to ‘improve the health and happiness of the world’ (“A pretty bold mission” admits Rich) – lectures, one-on-one sessions – and put them on a global stage. “Take 10” became the simple gateway into the Headspace world, a free ten-day, ten-minute-a-day series on a well-designed app. Far from being the hippy kid in a room full of tech geeks, Headspace is now the most downloaded Health & Fitness app on iTunes, with more
and his canoe slalom teammate Tim Baillie went on to win gold for Britain in 2012. “Technically our ability hadn’t changed but we were mentally more solid,” he says. “In the later stage of my career I went from surviving to thriving. For me it was about being comfortable with being uncomfortable.” Meanwhile, Arianna Huffington, founder and editor in chief of The Huffington Post, argues that meditation saved her from the brink of collapse. As outwardly successful as it gets, Huffington’s rather violent wake-up call was waking up on her bathroom floor, with a broken cheekbone, having passed out from exhaustion. Forcing her to redefine what success meant for her, she wrote her best-selling book Thrive, explaining how the current definition is literally killing us.
“For the CrackBerry generation who demanded everything faster, communication without delay, entertainment without ad breaks, we can also add fast-forwarding our mid-life crisis phase” than a million users across 150 countries. Indeed, Andy and Rich somehow avoided any sandal-wearing connotations and instead quickly catapulted themselves into mainstream cool, partnering with brands such as Selfridges, TED Talks and Virgin (which even installed a Headspace channel on its planes). With support ranging from sportsmen to politicians, and tastemakers across the world, these two guys have managed to do something that ten years ago would have been unthinkable – they have got real people trying and, more importantly, talking about meditation. Olympic athlete Etienne Stott MBE credits winning gold to his daily Headspace meditation: “It helped me to achieve a level of mental clarity and dexterity that is vital in intense situations.” After “totally failing” at the Bejing Olympics, Stott

“Arianna’s gift is that she’s a successful, powerful woman saying ‘actually this isn’t what it’s all about,’” says Rich. “It’s quite the pin in the bubble.” However, everyone is quick to point out that this is not a case of choosing between success and wellbeing, rather, using meditation as a practical guide for working smarter not harder; one can help the other. “There is no trade-off between productivity and achievement in taking the time to connect to this place [of calm],” says Huffington. In the wake of such public stories like Arianna’s, or that of Moritz Erhardt, the 21-year-old Merrill Lynch intern who died after collapsing at home after working until 6am for three days in a row, it’s unsurprising that the upcoming generation are already redefining what success looks like for them. And as their wish-list stretches beyond the

corporate title and the corner office, Andy and Rich argue that corporations that prioritise staff wellness will be the most successful, both in attracting the best talent and getting the most out of them. “Banks always used to get the cream of the crop at all the best universities, and now this is not always a given. You have a whole bunch of millennials coming in and saying ‘What is it that I want?’” Noting the sea change, Andy and Rich put together a corporate meditation offering, and have worked with some high-profile brands, including Credit Suisse and Reuters. Joerg Floeck, MD of Global Sales at Reuters, says that he would highly recommend them to any organisation, arguing that “the simple techniques can teach participants how to take control of their mental state to achieve greater focus, concentration, positivity and overall wellbeing”. And it can work for anyone, from the intern to the CEO: “Everyone in the Corporate environment can benefit from to manage their wellbeing,” says Angus Warren, head of corporate services at Nomura. However, despite the changing landscape, both Andy and Rich appreciate the potential stigma attached to taking a “meditation break”. Far from suggesting that corporations build an incense room or provide staff with an ostrich pillow (Google it if you haven’t seen one), they simply want to tell people that this is something available for them to try. “I think the mind is the last taboo,” says Andy. “It’s the place we’re not quite ready to go. It’s interesting, because to have a problem with sleep, for example, is OK, we talk about that stuff, whereas anxiety is more hidden. But I think we’re starting to talk about those kind of things, and open up and be more vulnerable about it, but it’s an evolving process.” “It’s how you want to fit meditation into your life. Headspace is about giving people the choices so they have as many options to make it work for them,” says Andy. “That’s what I love about it; you can put some headphones in and nobody knows – you can do it on the commute home.” It certainly beats playing Angry Birds…

As spring breaks in Europe, a surge of superyachts arrive fresh from the winter Caribbean season to fill the ever-growing demand for charters in the West Med WORDS: NICCI PERIDES

he Mediterranean, rumoured to be the birthplace of luxury yacht charter, is an exquisite melting pot of diverse cultures, effortless elegance and old-world charm. There are few other regions in the world that allow such a freeflow of travel between stunning locations in a variety of countries. First named Mediterraneus, meaning, ‘centre of the word’ by the Romans, it offers so much to the yacht charterer. Superyachts simply hop between super-luxe marinas and anchorages, ranging from glitz and glamour destinations like St Tropez and Monaco, to old-time classics like Portofino, Naples and Capri in the west or remote, sandy islands like the Dodecanese in the east. Here we explore where the yachting aficionado will be headed this season in the glamorous west Med.

Sardinia The second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is a firm favourite on the superyacht Med trail. From the city of Cagliari in the south to old coastal towns such as Alghero in the north, there is a rich mixture of architecture and culture to be found there. In the north-east of the island lies the famous Costa Smeralda. To moor your 50-metre-plus superyacht in this luxe port, it is going to set you back up to $3,100 a night in high season. The streets are filled with high-end boutiques and designer nightspots, including the nearby celebrity-haunt Billionaire nightclub. Some of the world’s largest superyachts are often seen anchored out to sea here, including the 110-metre Dilbar, and Serene, the world’s eleventh largest yacht. The Archipelago della Maddalena, the first national park in Sardinia, is made up of 60 islands and islets and is well worth visiting. The best of the beaches are Liscia Ruja, with its splendid half-moon shape; Cappriccioli, framed by pink granite rocks; and Romazzino. For golf aficionados, there is Il Pevero, one of Europe’s most spectacular courses.

Italian Riviera
Côte d’Azur A small stretch of the Mediterranean coastline, the Côte d’Azur epitomises the glamour of superyachting. But its unfaltering appeal is more than skin deep for, peppered along the coastline and tucked in-between the glitzy neighbourhoods of St Tropez or Monaco are a number of quaint villages, impossibly blue stretches of Mediterranean waters, rural communities and islands fit for the Caribbean. The cosmopolitan city of Marseille kicks off the Côte d’Azur in the west – it was named European Capital of Culture in 2013 when the city shed its somewhat less than glam reputation. What is left is a cool, quirky alternative to the glitz of its rival cities of St Tropez and Cannes. However, if you want to experience the French high life, then look no further than the aforementioned cities – with its champagne-fuelled parties, beach clubs and average age of around 25, Saint Tropez is the playground of the young and beautiful. And if Saint Tropez is the teenager of the Côte d’Azur then Cannes must be its 20-something sister. Wander along the quintessential Riviera city; browse its designer stores, visit the exclusive nightclubs or just take it all in on one of the long stretches of golden-sand beaches. Meanwhile in Monaco: casinos, the Yacht Club, the marina, escalators that transport pedestrians up and down the shopping streets (nobody walks here, let alone climbs stairs)… this is a place that has to be seen. It is the perfect superyacht stop – book early, though, for berths in the summer are snapped up very quickly. The islands dotted along the coast are worth a visit too, from the pristine waters of the Calanques National Park, to the superyacht haunt of Ile de Porquerolles – they are the perfect offshore retreat for a spot of R&R. If you happen to fancy a slower pace, then leave your yacht in one of the marinas and head inland. Grasse, just outside Cannes, is a beautiful town surrounded by jasmine, centifolia roses, orange blossom and violet fields – little wonder that it is famed for perfume manufacture.
The Ligurian and Tuscan coast down to Elba, known as the Italian Riviera, is a wonderful yachting destination. Its sedate pace works harmoniously with its lively neighbour the Côte d’Azur. The region is on most charterers’ must-do list. The Ligurian coast was first discovered in the 50s after a series of high-profile guests graced its boutique hotels, charming restaurants and scenic villages. The region grew very popular and designer stores such as Armani and Dolce & Gabbana started lining the cobble-stoned streets. This brought with it a siege in superyachts docked in the marina or anchored in the bay. High above, hugging the craggy coastline, lie the five charming towns of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – better known as the Cinque Terre. This aesthetically stunning region seems to have escaped time, due largely to its precarious position of being tucked into the cliffs. Its remote location has meant that it is very hard to reach by motorised transport – instead guests choose to hike the famous Sentiero Azzurro path, which offers wonderful vistas of the coastline below. This path links each town. The island of Elba is perhaps best known as the site of Napoleon’s exile and subsequent escape, but this charming Tuscan island has much more to offer. After Sicily and Sardinia, this is the third largest island in Italy. Dominated by Mount Capanne at over 1000m, and home to wild boar and mouflon (wild sheep), it has retained a lot of its original grandeur and remains a popular holiday spot for Italians. Ancient roads provide excellent hiking trails, and for water lovers, the submarine park there offers remarkable dive sites complete with old wrecks and shoals of colourful fish.

The Airport Commission has declared the need for one additional terminal in order to cope with increasing demand in the UK, heating up the contest between the two airports. Cost, market competition and environmental implications are at the centre of the debate, with Heathrow’s claim based on expanding its selling point as a European hub, while Gatwick has estimated that an additional terminal there would create space for a further 10 million passengers to travel per year. The future of both will remain in suspense until after the General Election in 2015. So can Heathrow hang on to its name as the largest UK airport, or will Gatwick steal the title? Added Preservative As summer rolls on, the great British al fresco dining tradition of crossing one’s fingers and checking the forecast blooms into season. Fortunately, if July is on the sodden side, Kettler’s mesh furniture is robust enough to leave outdoors in any weather due to its tough, hand-wrought iron framework that’s coated in a mix of aluminium and polyester. FRANK & DEAN’S 4TH JULY PICNIC: INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND CELEBRATION
If you’re a fan of Frank and Dean, this is the best show in town. Two of the UK’s classiest crooners, Iain Mackenzie and Steve Pert, will be joined by Pete Long’s fantastic nine–piece Big Band on a wonderfully entertaining and authentic Rat Pack homage that has been a huge hit every time they have appeared at Boisdale of Canary Wharf. Tickets from £15 SATURDAY JULY 0 5 2 0 1 4 - 9 : 4 5 P M
MICHAEL JACKSON: ETERNITY: INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND CELEBRATION Danny Oliver’s homage to the King of Pop is so breathtakingly accurate that he has become one of the most in–demand performers in the tribute world. Oliver and his troupe of funky dancers take the audience from the Jackson Five all the way through to Bad and beyond in a non–stop all–singing, all–dancing extravaganza. Highly recommended. Tickets from £15
FRIDAY JULY 1 1 2 0 1 4 - 9 : 4 5 P M
SOUL FRIDAY: DAVE LEWIS & 1UP FEATURING LIZZIE DEANE Led by American tenor sax supremo, Dave Lewis, and his excellent band, 1UP, this special show will feature the soulful vocals of Boisdale favourite Lizzie Deane as they storm their way through a stack of soul and funk classics. Tickets from £10
SATURDAY JULY 1 2 2 0 1 4 - 9 : 4 5 P M
SUMMERTIME BLUES: ERROL LINTON & HIS BAND Errol Linton’s rasping harmonica and raw vocals sound so gritty that you could easily be forgiven for thinking that this blues man hails from the Deep South rather than South London, and we are delighted to be welcoming him back to Boisdale for another blast of blistering Brixton blues. One of London’s best–kept secrets. Tickets from £10
FRIDAY JULY 18 2014 - 9:45PM
SOUL FRIDAY: FEATURING JOE CANG & HIS BAND Although he may not be a household name, Joe Cang has been dubbed ‘One of London’s great singer songwriters’ by the Evening Standard. His upbeat blend of pop, soul and reggae blew the roof off the Boisdale stage last year, so we are delighted that he is coming back for more. Tickets from £10
SATURDAY JULY 1 9 2 0 1 4 - 9 : 4 5 P M
THE GREAT GATSBY SUMMER PARTY NIGHT: BRATISLAVA HOT SERENADERS This breathtakingly good 18–piece orchestra play American ‘Hot Jazz’ music with a subtle Slovakian swing that takes it to places you have never heard it go before. They are a huge draw at music festivals all over the world, so this is a great opportunity to see one of the best European ‘Hot Jazz’ bands in a truly intimate setting. Tickets from £10
FRIDAY JULY 25 2014 - 9:45PM
SOUL FRIDAY: LOUISE GOLBEY & HER BAND This rising star’s mix of sassy soul and summery pop was a huge hit when she made her Boisdale debut last year. She appears to have just beamed down from another musical planet, one where every song sounds like an imaginary jam between the Fugees and John Legend, which can only be a very good thing. Tickets from £10
SATURDAY JULY 2 6 2 0 1 4 - 9 : 4 5 P M
SUMMER OF ‘69: THE GUITAR HEROES: THE MIKE EDMONDS BAND The Mike Edmonds Band’s blistering take on the music of Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Santana is probably the closest thing you’ll ever get to seeing the Woodstock lineup on one stage, although we would sincerely hope that Boisdale boasts more comfortable seating, better food and a superior wine list than the audience enjoyed at the original festival. Tickets from £10

To toast their 20 year partnership, Cowdray Park Polo Club Gold Cup and Veuve Clicquot are hosting ticketed VIP picnics for the final on Sunday 20 July. With a flute of Yellow Label in hand, guests will enjoy the sport of kings while dining on hampers prepared by Mount Street Deli and Scott’s. There will also be a host of other entertainment, including a Dior pop-up beauty bar. D Tickets for 20 July from £60, vcgoldcuppicnic.co.uk
Feeling dippy Good news! Godiva’s strawberry dipping station is now open from 3pm. And if it gets really hot (we can hope), they also have a new soft ice cream bar – we love the dark chocolate and vanilla ice-cream. Get it in a waffle cone and topped with caramelised hazelnut crumbs and raspberry syrup – well there’s no point in doing things by halves. D Godiva, Jubilee Place
The Wicker man Linley’s wicker Somerset Picnic Hamper is densely packed with every conceivable nicety to set the stage for a very proper picnic. From its Champagne flutes (crystal) and linen napkins (hand-embroidered), to its 100 per cent angora picnic blanket (waterproof), every facet is designed to be both beautiful and practical. More suited for a day at the races than back packing through the Everglades, the great outdoors never looked so civilised. D Somerset Picnic Hamper, £9,500, Linley,
coco cabana To create a summer cocktail menu, Tom’s Kitchen has teamed up with Jax Coco’s 100 per cent pure coconut water. The cult, fat-free, gluten-free, cholesterolfree free drink is positively bursting with health, containing the body’s five essential electrolytes. Try it mixed with the likes of jasmine syrup, cachaca and cherry bitters and you can convince yourself that you are undoing the alcohol content… D Cocktails from £4.75, Tom’s Kitchen Canary Wharf, Westferry Circus

Yacht D’Argent If you haven’t made it on your summer holidays just yet, Coq d’Argent has the perfect retreat; its bar and rooftop terrace have been transformed into Yacht d’Argent, a space inspired by the luxurious French Riviera. The panoramic views of the city skyline more than substitute a sea view. Whether basking in the sun or relaxing under the white, sail-like canopies, a decadent grill menu is on offer, heavy on seafood, alongside summery cocktails and an expertly stocked Champagne bar. Boundary Rooftop With a fully al fresco terrace and modern steel pergola alongside, the Boundary rooftop has both generous space and weather-proofing for the (hopefully rare) rain showers. Open seven days a week, morning until evening, there’s every reason to dine in the sun or host a private event in its refreshing surroundings. A leafy canopy of grape-producing vines and a working kitchen garden, provide the Mediterranean inspiration for the menu, which includes fresh, light dishes of salads, chargrilled fish and vegetables. D 2-4 Boundary Street, E2 7DD, theboundary.co.uk, 020 7729 1051
Selfridges On the Roof The Parlour
The grassy floor and foliage create a garden in the sky at On the Roof with Q, hosting foodie talks, events and summer dining. Highlights include the charcoal grill and juice bar. D 400 Oxford Street, W1H 6HB, selfridges.com, 0207 318 3287
The Parlour has re-launched its stylish outdoor area this summer. Designer furniture and oversized umbrellas make it an enjoyable place to relax, with ice-cold refreshment in the form of quirky alcoholic slushies plus casual BBQ dining. Open-air screens and ping-pong tables, mean there’s no missing out on summer sporting action; a great place to gather with friends. D 40 Canada Square, E14 5FW, theparlourbar.co.uk, 0845 468 0100
Ibérica La Terraza Inspired by Madrid’s terrace culture, Ibérica la Terraza is the perfect summer complement to Ibérica’s permanent restaurant. The menu, created by Michelin star-winning Nacho Manzano, is typical of northern Spain; try the delicious pinchos – bitesized bread with different toppings. Pair with a signature cocktail or original sangria and live like the (Spanish) locals do. D 12 Cabot Square, E14 4QQ, ibericalondon.co.uk

Shoreditch House If you’re not a member, be sure to make friends with someone who is; the stunning rooftop pool alone makes this one of the best spots in London to hang out in the sun. Along with the fully-heated, open-air pool, the sixth floor hosts a Lazy Lawn lounge garden and restaurant. Vintage-style striped daybeds and blankets provide the full sunbathing experience, while all food and drink on offer can be served to both outdoor spaces. An exterior poolside bar completes that holiday feeling. D Ebor Street, E1 6AW, shoreditchhouse.com
roka Roka has earned an iconic status among Londoners – and quite right too. In summer, there is simply no where better to enjoy its Japanese robatayaki cuisine than outdoors on the terrace. With comfy sofas and candle-lighting, the terrace has a relaxed lounge feel, while the spectacular architectural skyline of Canary Wharf provides a dramatic backdrop to your meal – a room with a view indeed… D 40 Canada Square, E14 5FW, rokarestaurant.com, 020 7636 5228

Belgraves Terrace A secluded spot for those in the know, the sophisticated roof terrace at the Belgraves Hotel lies hidden beyond its Library bar. Open to non-guests, it boasts an exquisitely curated selection of cocktails, cuisine and vintage Cuban cigars, while the retractable glass roof, heaters and designer furniture provide every comfort for evenings out in the open. Whisky and cigar tastings are a private events speciality. D 20 Chesham Place, SW1X 8HQ, thompsonhotels.com, 020 7858 0100
Aqua Kyoto Aqua Kyoto may be renowned for its expertly contemporary Japanese menu, but in summer it also boosts a seriously special view over the usually chaotic Oxford and Regent Street. Although not quite as towering as their Shard offshoot, it still commands a rather impressive vista and the evenings at Aqua Kyoto are designed for a lively and more laid-back atmosphere of drinking and socialising rather than formal dining (food is only available until 7pm). Stick to the traditional sake or try one of their inventive summer cocktails, including coconut and red berry vodkas – delicious. D 240 Regent Street, W1B 3BR, aqua.com, 0207 478 0540
Radio Rooftop Terrace Open late or until 3am Thursday- Saturday, Radio Rooftop is a glamorous night-time hot spot with an upbeat atmosphere, and sleek lounge spaces for socialising over drinks or contemporary Spanish tapas. On the 10th floor, it luxuriates in panoramic views of the illuminated capital. D 336-337 The Strand, WC2R 1HA, melia.com, 0207 395 3400

restaurant review
Bubbles Green on the
With two new terraces and an offer that’s hard to refuse, Plateau is shaking up Saturdays this summer words: Aimee Latimer
T
he second the waitress turned her back on us in Plateau’s English Garden terrace my fellow diner and I quickly started poking the floor, just to make absolutely sure it wasn’t real grass. It wasn’t, and although we had had strong doubts from the start, we were concerned that the bottomless Prosecco had clouded our judgement. I like to think we can’t be the only ones to have done so, considering that The Plateau Restaurant Bar & Grill has recently opened two new grass-carpeted terraces, open until the end of August. The first is the English Garden terrace, where we dined, which serves food from the Bar & Grill menu. The second, the Moët Ice Garden terrace, serves the main restaurant’s menu. Both are wonderful summer nooks for drinking and dining. Their open roofs let in the fresh air, while the glass walls cancel out the worse of the noise pollution and offer floor-to-ceiling views of Canada Square Park. We went to try Plateau’s new Saturday Lunch, a separate menu available between 12 noon and 3.30pm served with limitless Prosecco. Considering that Plateau’s menu typically sits around the higher end of the price scale (with à la carte mains mostly crossing the £20 mark) this deal of two courses
for £32 and three for £35 is a great find. The menu itself is somewhat random. Positioned somewhere between brunch and lunch, hefty grilled steaks and French mains are listed alongside eggs, sandwiches and Bloody Marys. Although, because set menus typically only offer a few choices, once you’ve navigated your way through it this menu feels very generous and people-pleasing. There are the light and elegant, French-inspired courses typical of the main restaurant, such as slowcooked ox cheek and ricotta ravioli, and also dishes from the grill. A particular star from the latter is the triple pig burger-pork patty. Comfort food at its best, it packs a lot of flavour into each layer of this neat burger that won’t leave you feeling too porky. The menu is peppered with appetising dishes, particularly on the dessert menu. For those with a sweet tooth, the cinnamon beignet – with its crispy, wonky shell rolled in sugar – and the pistachio éclair are a must-try. Drinking Prosecco during the day feels wonderfully decadent, and our lunch quickly slips into a whole afternoon affair. And, as the evening approaches and cocktails start springing from behind the bar, you may just be tempted into doing an all-dayer. D Plateau Restaurant Bar & Grill, Canada Square

New Home for Hamptons Hamptons International’s new Canary Wharf branch is cause for a lot of celebration – two parties worth in fact
T
o celebrate the opening of a new branch in Canary Wharf, Hamptons International are throwing not one, but two launch parties to charm their new neighbours. Both local professionals and potential investors are invited to the two dates, the first being on Thursday 17 July 5pm to 8pm and the second on Saturday 19 July 11am till 2pm. The new residential Canary Wharf branch opened its doors for business in April of this year and is headed up by Julian Amos, manager of the sales team, and Chris Boswell, manager of lettings. Both agents have brought with them an impressive combined 25 years of property industry experience and a wealth of local market knowledge.
The opening of the Canary Wharf branch marks a key step in Hamptons International’s plans for growth in 2014 which will see several more branches opening throughout the year. More recently, Hamptons International has acquired two existing agents, Preston Bennett, a well-established agent operating in North and North West London, and Humphreys Skitt & Co, a key sales and lettings agency operating in the South East London markets of Blackheath and Greenwich. The acquisition together with the opening of the Canary Wharf branch will strengthen Hamptons International’s East and South footprint, bridging the gap between the Canary Wharf and Dulwich offices while creating ties with the South East Region all the way through to Kent. No wonder they want to celebrate.

Franklyn James ESTATE AGENTS
PROPERTY
STATE OF THE MARKET choosing An Agent
Have Prices Peaked?
JASON TAYLOR, sales director at Franklyn James Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market
ALASDAIR CARPENTER, managing director of Lourdes Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market
When selling any home it is vital that you choose an estate agent that can accommodate all of your needs. Market share is of great importance, as is the agent’s profile and how knowledgeable they are about their core market. It is also important to ask the question: “Are they selling homes like mine?” There are many business models that sell the idea that they are international and have global connections, however, within certain markets you simply need that first hand local expert knowledge to provide you with a true market valuation. With this, your chosen agent will be able to deliver the best possible service and asking price at both the viewing and offer stage. Every seller has their own requirements which become significant when selling, but I guarantee that within their top three specifications will be price, service and value for money. Once you have chosen your agent it is also key to intelligently pick who will handle the transaction. You may be the most motivated vendor in East London and you may have the most proactive buyer on board, but instructing a conveyancing company that does not meet to your timeframe can be disastrous. Throughout my 17 years in the industry I have runs sales that should have completed within the usual eight – 12 weeks, but have continued for six months or more. The longer a sale is running the more likely that a problem may occur for the seller or buyer. The choice of agent and choice of solicitor go hand in hand, you chose your estate agent and to some this is what’s most important, but in my option they are both of equal status.
As the effect of the recent Government Mortgage Market Review becomes apparent, and the first rumblings of a possible interest rate rise begin to make headlines, are we seeing the residential sales market beginning to lose momentum? Certainly prices are not increasing at the same rate as they were 12 months ago and on top of that we are beginning to notice a slight increase in the volume of properties being offered for sale. It would seem that the general public are starting to feel that the market might be peaking and are trying to capitalise on the market conditions before it reaches the summit. I am not wholly convinced we have hit the peak quite yet, but I do suspect price increases in residential property are beginning to slow to a more reasonable and sustainable level. As someone that remembers the devastating effects of the UK housing market crash of 2008 only too well, I don’t see a market plateaux as a particularly bad market trend. It is important to maintain a strong domestic market in the capital. Too much reliance on inward investment from foreign buyers is a risky strategy and the domestic market needs to withstand the realms of affordability, especially with the new stress testing imposed on lenders as part of the MMR (Mortgage Market Review). The British public are, and always have been, fairly savvy in the arts of the property market. Double digit percentage price increase can scare off potential buyers who feel the market will over heat and do not wish to be caught in the world of negative equity. Thus, transaction levels fall and we enter the realms of the self-fulfilling prophecy. If nothing else, I think the property market has a very interesting year ahead.

SALES TOM BILL, head of London Residential Research at Knight Frank, comments on the trends in the residential sales market Home prices in Canary Wharf grew at the fastest rate in London in the year to April, Knight Frank data shows. Values jumped 16.2 per cent, which was higher than the 7.5 per cent average recorded in prime central London, an area that includes Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Belgravia. It was also higher than the prime outer London average of 12.1 per cent and a marked increase on the previous year’s growth of 2.3 per cent in Canary Wharf. Such strong growth is built on the improving UK economy and the fact that banks and companies in sectors like oil and gas and mining are recruiting again. The other effect at play is the return of the ripple effect in London, with house price growth spreading outwards from the economic epicentre of central London, as it did in previous UK housing cycles. Prime central London property prices rose strongly between 2009 and 2012 as the area gained a reputation as a safe investment during the financial crisis, in particular among overseas investors. That wave of capital didn’t go far beyond Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea, and annual growth in prime outer London stayed in the low singledigits. The dam burst last year as signs of life returned to the UK economy and growth spread to the rest of London and the UK. Two other factors underpin longer-term growth in Canary Wharf. One is the arrival of Crossrail and the other is the development of Wood Wharf. The former will dramatically improve connectivity and the latter will accelerate the area’s transformation into a mixed-use London neighbourhood. Canary Wharf is also popular with buy-to-let investors, who can achieve a rental yield of between four per cent and five per cent, a favourable return compared to other parts of London. Loosening corporate purse strings meant rental values in Canary Wharf grew 2.6 per cent in the year to April. When you add rental income to price growth you get a total annual return of about 20 per cent, a figure hard to match in any other residential market in London.

LETTINGS VANESSA EVETT-BEESLEY, partner, head of department and office head at Knight Frank Canary Wharf Rental values in prime central London are climbing and the signs indicate growth will continue. Rents in prime central London rose for the third consecutive month in May as growth took hold in the lettings market after a two and-a-half year decline. The change over a six-month period was positive for the first time since January 2012 and rental values climbed back to the level recorded at the start of 2011, about nine months before the last peak. Rental values grew 0.2 per cent in May, which meant the annual decline narrowed to 1.4 per cent, the lowest figure since July 2012. Despite the growth, a full-blown upswing is not yet underway and half of Knight Frank’s prime central London offices reported an increase, while the other half reported that rents were flat or falling in May, however the signs are encouraging. The first is that the number of new lettings registrations in the first four months of 2014 is 17 per cent higher than the equivalent period last year and 48 per cent higher than 2012. Demand is coming from a range of industries, including oil and gas, IT and mining, sectors that have all experienced relatively strong performance in the last six months. The recovery in the banking sector, which has traditionally been a strong source of demand, is still tentative. The second is that demand appears to be softening in the sales market, with applicant registrations in May 2014 about a third down on the same month last year. A prolonged period of strong growth combined with growing talk of a price correction means buyers have become sensitive to high prices in prime central London, which mirrors a trend in the mainstream market. As the sales market pauses for breath, it is starting to benefit the lettings market and several high-value deals have been struck in recent weeks. In previous cycles this has translated into more buyers deciding to rent and more vendors becoming landlords, though there is no evidence of this trend just yet. A further boost to the lettings market will come in the summer with the seasonal inflow of students. *From Knight Frank’s Prime Central London Rental Index-May 2014
