t’s no secret that the British summer can be unpredictable – at best – and so this month we are transporting you away from eternal grey skies to far-flung corners of the globe. Angelina Villa-Clarke explores the finest hotel openings in the world’s most exotic destinations (page 18), and in doing so discovers turtle spotting on the blissful shores of Thanda Island, sleeping under the stars in Kenya, pilgrimage walks in Japan and the Middle East’s highest five-star hotel. These are places and experiences that can truly be dubbed ‘once in a lifetime’. Should the sun decide to appear, we’ve got all of your summer entertaining needs sorted on page 66; with barbecue suggestions from Big Easy and cocktail recipes from ROKA, we’re giving you all the necessary tools to make your party one to remember. And if your focus is less on eating and more on eating less, then turn to page 70, where we compare three different diet plans, each with varying degrees of success. We’re delving back into the fashion archives on page 34, with a look at the history of that essential but beloved garment – underwear. Inspired by the recent V&A exhibition Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear, we chart the evolution of the undergarment – from 18th-century corsetry to the modern sports bra – and uncover how lingerie trends throughout history have reflected the zeitgeist of that particular period. From racy fashion to racy motors, on page 92 Matthew Carter reviews the new Maserati Levante – the supercar brand’s first foray into the world of 4x4, and on page 88 Paul Joseph gets the chance to customise a Ferrari at the car maker’s factory in Italy. Whether it’s food, fashion or travel, this month is all about celebrating the extraordinary.

unwind in paradise Thanda Island, Tanzania
For the ultimate in escapism, go off-grid in the most glamorous way possible by checking in to the tiny gem that is Thanda Island. Found in southern Tanzania’s Shungi Mbili Island Marine Reserve, the private island escape has been ten years in the making – and it shows. The five-bedroom villa accommodates ten adults and has a dramatic glass-rim swimming pool (it’s like taking a dip in a fish tank) and oversized indoor aquarium. The all-white rooms are brightened with pops of colour – the dining chairs are covered in traditional Ankara prints, there’s pretty floral fabric on armchairs and vibrant throws adorning beds (you’ll want to take it all home with you). Add in a Steinway grand piano, cigar humidor, fine wine collection and copper beach baths and you have the quintessential beach retreat.
As well as spending time pondering life on the picture-perfect shores (some of the best you’ll ever see) there’s big game fishing, diving in the nearby marine park, kayaking and turtle spotting to while away the hours. The island even has its own private coral reef for Instagram-ready snorkelling opportunities, and the more adventurous can catch sight of the whale sharks that congregate south of the island from October to February. Owned by Swedish philanthropists – Christin and Dan Olofsson – their Scandinavian design touch is remarkable throughout. But it’s the marine research, conservation and local community projects that they have committed to which will really leave an impression on you. More than paradise, this is truly soul-stirring stuff. Thanda Island, from US$10,000 per night (approx. £7,048) for exclusive use. Includes boat transfers, all activities and all dining, thandaisland.com

explore new heights Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort, Oman
Luxury hotels in many Middle Eastern countries may call to mind opulence, glitz and grand surroundings. But without scrimping on luxury, the new Anantara property, which opened in July, is doing hospitality its own way. A two-hour drive from Muscat airport, the hotel looks as rugged and wild as it gets. Set in the Saiq Plateau on Oman’s Green Mountain, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar is perched some 2,000 metres above sea level on the curving rim of a great canyon, making it the highest five-star resort in the Middle East and one of the highest in the world. The ethos is to take guests out of themselves for a while by offering a cultured insight into the destination’s rich heritage, and this being the Middle East, there are plenty of authentic indulgences on tap too. Once you’ve got your breath back from viewing expansive skies above and canyon and mountain peaks spread below, you’ll be able to kick back in your room or villa. Each has bespoke Omani furniture, with the design as a whole echoing a traditional Middle Eastern look; wooden trellis panels, pretty fretwork lighting and inlaid chests are mixmatched with fine linens and pared-back furniture, which calls to mind a Mid-Century influence.
s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s
Meanwhile, a colour palette of rusts, oranges and creams ramps up the tastefulness. Similar to mini-spas, the bathrooms are uber-luxe, with topof-the-range Amouage products, private terraces and rain showers. Checked in to a villa? Then you’ll also have your own butler, walk-in dressing areas and infinity pool. From mountaintop yoga at sunrise to stargazing, archery and quad biking, inspiration can be found everywhere here. The hotel’s Friday night market, set in a picturesque courtyard with a blazing fire pit, showcases local village artisans, while activities on offer include trips to heritage attractions such as remote, ancient cities and – for the thrill seekers – the chance to abseil down a sheer cliff drop-off. Back at the resort, six restaurants and lounges offer a mix of culinary treats, including dining on a platform that juts out over the canyon. The Anantara Spa, meanwhile, is perfect for bringing you back down to earth with its ancient hammam rituals, outdoor relaxation areas and lose-yourself treatments. You can even go for a dip in the cliffedge infinity pool. Hair-raising moments guaranteed. Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort, from £340 per night on a B&B basis, jabal-akhdar.anantara.com

sleep under the stars Loisaba Lodge, Kenya
Want to get back to nature? Then head to the new Loisaba Lodge in Kenya’s Laikipia Plains before everyone else hears about it. Just opened at the end of May, the tented camp is located in a vast 56,000-acre private wildlife conservancy. With verdant valleys, endless red plains, views of snow-capped Mount Kenya and the Ewaso Nyiro River, the mix of terrain means it is teeming with wildlife and the camp is home to elephants, wild dogs, zebra and lions. Loisaba Lodge offers those once-in-a-lifetime experiences we all lust after. It’s intimate and small, so if you have enough friends and family, gather them all up and hire the whole camp of 12 tents. On offer is a combination of ensuite tents, family tents and one family residence, plus a main lounge, dining room and striking infinity swimming pool. The decor throughout is funky safari-chic: think classic leather tub chairs, African print accessories and cow-hide footstools, while tents are spacious with wood flooring, natural textiles and open-plan bathrooms. Roll up the sides for views to die for. For something extra special, the nearby Loisaba ‘star beds’ are an African adventure in themselves; overlooking a large waterhole, with resident hippo and elephant, these innovative rooms are perched on a raised open wooden platform with open-air bathrooms and guests are hosted by traditional Samburu and Laikipia Maasai warriors. And if that doesn’t sound exceptional enough, each room
comes complete with a roll-out, handcrafted fourposter bed so guests can drift off to sleep under the star-studded African night sky. Activities at Loisaba Lodge range from game drives to guided bush walks with Samburu guides, to horse and camel safaris and lion tracking, all with conservation as a key focus. It’s safari – but not as you know it. Loisaba Tented Camp, available through Aardvark Safaris, from £410 per person, per night, aardvarksafaris.co.uk

embrace your inner child soneva jani, Maldives
If you’re looking for more from your beach holiday, then look no further than Soneva Jani in the Maldives, due to open this October. Meaning ‘wisdom’ in Sanskrit, this new property from the ultra-glam Soneva Group is guaranteed to bring you the headspace you need in order to fully recharge your batteries. Found on the island of Medhufaru, which is part of an uninhabited five-island cluster in the Noonu Atoll, this is all about getting away from it all. With just 24 over-water villas and one island villa stretching across 5km, it is one of the lowestdensity resorts in the world, meaning you are unlikely to have to make small talk with strangers at breakfast. The devil is in the detail here – each master bedroom roof, for instance, slides back at the press of a button so you can sleep under the stars, while open-air bathrooms feature lagoon access so you can have one last dip in the aquamarine ocean before you shower. There are over-water swing seats, walk-in mini-bars complete with a wine cellar

selection and roof terrace dining rooms for eating à deux. A must? Bag one of the villas that has its own slide that will swoosh you from the top floor straight into the lagoon. Definitely not just for kids. From the experimental tasting room to dining in an observatory (each table has a screen with the view from the in-house telescope), there’s a host of inventive restaurants to take your pick from. There are even separate cheese, chocolate, ice cream and charcuterie rooms to cater for all manner of cravings. The resort also boasts the first ‘silent outdoor cinema’ in the Maldives, with guests given Bluetooth earphones to watch the movies so as not to disturb the wildlife in the area. Of course, the impossibly turquoise Indian Ocean gives the wow factor. Dive into the pristine waters and expect to come face to face with turtles, rays and occasional dolphins. Soak it up – it’s the ultimate castaway experience. Soneva Jani, from £1,290 per night for a water villa, which includes a range of treats during your stay, soneva.com

find your zen Amanemu, Japan
There’s always a frisson of excitement among travel aficionados when a new Aman hotel opens. Earlier this year, the second Japanese outpost from the group threw open its doors and, according to Aman junkies, it’s the standout property of hotelier Adrian Zecha’s collection. Located some 180 miles south of Aman’s first Japanese bolthole in Tokyo, it’s found in the idyllic Ise-Shima National Park. The resort taps into the Japanese custom of holidaying in simple, rural ryokan inns – the country’s traditional bathing retreats – and makes the most of its position on the shores of Ago Bay – famous for its pearl industry and hot springs. Those looking for a zen moment will be perfectly at home here. Everything is light, airy and ethereal, with designers Kerry Hill Architects adopting a classic Japanese aesthetic across the 24 suites and four ‘haute’ villas; a colour palette of cream and taupe is juxtaposed with dark-wood, custom-made furniture, accentuated with accents of Kumiko Japanese art. Bathrooms give true meaning to the term ‘private sanctuary’ and the ‘quiet’ design harnesses Japan’s cultural rituals around bathing. There are charcoal-coloured stone tiles and minimal accessories, with feature windows looking out on to private gardens. Outside, the serenity continues. Sunken stone terraces link the suites and villas with the
restaurant and bar, while a 33-metre freshwater infinity pool looks out across the bay. Maple and cherry trees give a natural richness to soften the stark lines. Dining here is also a calming, nourishing act. Based around the Japanese ‘izakaya’ style of informal sharing, dishes feature local produce – think lobster, abalone, delicate fruits and Wagyu beef. You don’t even have to tax your mind as to what to choose, because the team of 12 chefs conjure up a multitude of daily changing plates to match guests’ tastes. As with any Aman resort, the highlight is the spa – this one is a moody, architectural space. Taking a holistic approach – by offering a combination of treatments, relaxation, movement and nutrition – you can truly zone out. Its focus is the central onsen for communal bathing, with water sourced from the nearby natural hot springs. Well-being activities include yoga and hiking, but Kumano Kodo pilgrimage walks are a must – you’ll pass tinkling streams, waterfall-laced mountains and cypress forests to reach stunning, sacred shrines. Go, get lost and find yourself again. Amanemu, from £568 per room per night, subject to 13 per cent service charge and eight per cent tax, room only, amanemu.com

n a true celebration of Britishness, Sophie Dahl was the inspiration behind jeweller Boodles’s new collection, which has aptly been christened after the former model and bestselling author. The range’s abstract heart-shaped design pays tribute to Dahl’s loyalty over the past three years as the brand’s ambassador and muse, and has been set within two pendants – one in platinum and white diamonds, the other in 18-karat rose
gold with diamonds and pale pink mother-of-pearl detailing. This feminine and wearable design has been created from diamond-set lines that meet in the middle to form an infinite circle. The collection will shortly be extended to include earrings and bracelets and presents an easy and stylish way to update your summer look. Sophie collection, boodles.com

fairy tale From a winged ear cuff worn by Rihanna to a diamond ring inspired by the New York skyline, Mayfair jeweller Jessica McCormack has carved out a reputation for creating unique, oneoff pieces. Adding to this, McCormack recently designed a bridal collection of six couture pieces, which can still be tailored to the wearer, who can select the size of the stone (from 0.20-carats to 20.00-carats) and the choice of metal. Each design tells its own story: the enchanting Little Mermaid ring captures the famous Hans Christian Andersen tale and incorporates the jeweller’s signature Georgian-inspired cutdown setting, while the Space Odyssey ring draws reference to Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi film epic with its futuristic, geometric design. PEARLS OF WEDDING WISDOM The summer wedding season is in full swing at David M Robinson with the arrival of its brand new pearl collection. A classic choice for a bride, pearls are often said to represent purity and sincerity. From a simple but elegant string of south sea pearls to a pair of diamond-set pearl earrings, there’s a range of different styles all with this classic gem at the heart. Vintage glamour inspired the Pearl Lunar necklace’s diamond drop, while the Pearl Whirlwind necklace makes a striking statement on the neckline with its dramatic diamond swirls encasing a single, delicate pearl at the centre. Out of AfricA Zimbabwean Chelsea Davy has been inspired by her African roots in the first jewellery line for her new brand, Aya. Hammer Time Panerai’s popularity may have proliferated in the past decade, but you’re still unlikely to see many of the company’s latest creations on the capital’s streets. The Radiomir 1940 Minute Repeater Carillon Tourbillon GMT is capable of chiming the time in two time zones – using three hammers, rather than the typical two – making it a rare thing indeed. The watch’s £280k price tag should serve as an indication of just how hard this technical feat is to achieve. That, and the fact that only a handful can be produced each year. Panerai is available at David M Robinson, Jubilee Place
Montblanc’s Material World When Montblanc entered the watch world, it could have taken the easy option and pumped out a series of fashion watches. Instead, the company chose to instate itself as a serious watchmaker by manufacturing mechanically-sound timepieces that stood up to the scrutiny of critics. Montblanc continues to assert itself with the TimeWalker Pythagore Ultra-Light Concept. Weighing less than 15 grams, it’s one of the lightest mechanical watches around. This has been achieved by combining Kevlar with a super rare type of resin, a first in the arena of case-making. TimeWalker Pythagore Ultra-Light Concept, Montblanc, Cabot Place

How Watches of Switzerland took over the capital Words: richard brown

ccording to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, last year Switzerland exported 460,000 fewer watches than it did in 2014. This translated into a downturn of around £500m, the first time the country has reported a slump in sales since 2009. This year, the industry is braced for an even steeper fall. Like-for-like sales in April were down double-digits at -11.1 per cent, while, overall, the first four months of 2016 have yielded a 9.5 per cent nose dive. None of this you’d know by looking at city centres in the UK – where watch shops have become as ubiquitous as chain restaurants and fancy places to get your hair done. The UK imported more Swiss watches than ever before in 2015, around £830 million’s worth, the Federation says. This year, we’ve overtaken Singapore and UAE to become Switzerland’s seventh largest watch market, our imports having surged 30.9 per cent since 2014. No other retailer, in London especially, has done more to fuel our appetite for luxury timepieces than Watches of Switzerland. In 2014, 90 years after it began trading on Ludgate Hill, the company opened a flagship store at 155 Regent Street. Setting 12 individual boutiques across three floors of more than 17,000 sq ft of retail space, it became the largest watch destination in Europe.

The brand expansion didn’t stop there. Last year, Watches of Switzerland opened stores in Oxford Street, Canary Wharf and Heathrow Terminal 5 – having already operated out of Terminals 3 and 4. The company that owns Watches of Switzerland, Aurum Group, also owns Mappin & Webb and Goldsmiths, as well as more recent online acquisitions The Watch Hut and Watch Shop. Last month, under the stewardship of CEO Brian Duffy, previously president of Ralph Lauren EMEA, Aurum announced it is now responsible for 31 per cent of all UK watch sales – Watches of Switzerland’s 155 Regent Street store having reported sales of £82 million in its first two years alone. That flagship boutique, it was announced in 2014, would constitute what Watches of Switzerland called the ‘Golden Triangle’ – a trio of central London showrooms that included the Oxford Street store and a new venture in Knightsbridge, which opened in June.
“The opening of Knightsbridge Watches of Switzerland consolidates Watches of Switzerland’s position as the world’s most forward-thinking, customer-focused luxury watch retailer,” says Duffy. Having launched in Canary Wharf’s Canada Place last year, the watch retailer brought several brands to the estate for the first time, including Swiss heavy-hitters Blancpain, Breguet, JaegerLeCoultre and Parmigiani Fleurier, as well as British brand Bremont. If the UK’s taste for mechanical timepieces persists, it’s foreseeable that it could soon overtake Germany and Italy as the largest watch market in Europe. For that, Switzerland, you can thank Duffy & Co. Watches of Switzerland Canary Wharf, Canada Place / Watches of Switzerland Knightsbridge, 47-51 Brompton Road, SW3, watches-of-switzerland.co.uk

s fashion lovers in London, we are spoilt for choice with the range of brands and designers on offer in the city, but this doesn’t mean we fail to get excited when there is a newcomer in our midst. Spanish fashion house Delpozo has this month inaugurated its first European boutique in the heart of Chelsea and the store will showcase the brand’s exquisite pre-fall collection – designed at the hands of creative director Josep Font, a man who has been at the forefront of the brand’s renaissance.
Inspired by the work of Mexican architect Luis Barragán and Japanese artist Nobuyoshi Araki, the designer has embraced a palette of deep shades of turquoise and vibrant reds for the eye-catching range of chic separates, dresses and knitwear. This is the prêt-a-couture brand’s first pre-fall collection, designed to make pieces more wearable, so that everyone can add a splash of Delpozo to their everyday wardrobes. delpozo.com
new season choos Creative director of Jimmy Choo, Sandra Choi, defined the brand’s pre-fall collection as embracing “a spirited, daring attitude, inspired by the iconic look of stylemakers such as Edie Sedgwick”. The clean, confident lines of midi-heels and flats can handle embellishment – such as mirrored and metallic surfaces, perforations and lattice detailing – while bags, designed to be carried hands-free, sport exotic skins and glitter. The most versatile piece, however, has to be the Romy shoe (pictured). A totally new style, it comes in different materials, colours and heights – from flat to an 11cm heel – and the pointy toe has been shaped to give more wiggle room. jimmychoo.com

Under wraps
Women have donned it – some have obsessed over it – throughout the ages, and while its form has evolved, underwear has always been a subtle but crucial form of fashionable self-expression WORDS: melissa emerson

t’s usually the first thing we put on in the morning and the last thing that comes off at night, and although fashion trends have always been heavily charted over time, underwear has perhaps seen a little less attention. A new exhibition – Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear – at the Victoria & Albert museum intends to change that. It brings to life the history of underwear from the 18th century to the modern day, through more than 200 pieces from its archives, other museums and private collections, to consider its cultural influence and significance. Curated by Edwina Ehrman, a specialist in the history of London fashion and haute couture, and the V&A’s own curator of Textiles and Fashion, it’s far from a boring walk-through of old and grey artefacts. From Acne Studios’ gender-neutral underpants and a Givenchy haute couture muslin dress with delicate lace knickers, to a Swarovski-encrusted corset and an 1840s men’s dressing gown, the pieces are engaging, surprising and provoke much thought on themes of innovation, the ideal body, gender, sex and morality. “Like all of our clothes, underwear reflects social, cultural, economic and technological change,” Ehrman said at the opening day of the exhibition.
Despite them having been prescribed for medical purposes and to correct posture, the dangerously tightfitting corset – as demonstrated in the exhibition by an X-ray showing the crushing impact on the wearer’s body – is an iconic symbol of women’s physical oppression historically. Ehrman, acknowledging that corsets continue to fascinate many, included a range in the exhibition, from a pair of 1760s whalebone stays to modern-day costume-like pieces. “Many of the waists are tiny but the corset with the smallest waist – 18 inches – was in fact made for Dita Von Teese in 2012 by the couture corset maker Mr Pearl,” revealed Ehrman. She goes on to say that the dramatic progression from restrictive corsets to the more liberating bra (there’s an early 1910 example on display) partially depended on “the development of man-made fibres, which transformed the range of underwear that was available”. One area of the exhibition is devoted to the underwear of the present day. In this category, Ehrman says, we see “how underwear has been transformed into outerwear, how underwear – and particularly nightwear – has morphed into leisurewear, and how designers have challenged the division between public and private by creating ever more revealing garments.”

Heidi Klum for Heidi Klum Intimates shot by Francesco Carrozzini
Within the field of underwear, luxury lingerie and nightwear brand Myla’s current most popular styles feature revealing peekaboo panels “designed to contour the body, while embroidered tulle creates windows to the skin, framing the body’s shape and creating a seductive look”, according to its senior designer and design manager, Tamsin Artus. The close connection between underwear and fashion, and the designers featuring similarly revealing pieces in their collections, is a focus of the exhibition. “We design and source from the same lace and material houses as the ready-to-wear brands, so there are a lot of similar trends coming together from the fabric suppliers,” added Artus, speaking of the relationship between the industries. Ehrman’s words on the creation of ever more revealing garments also specifically reflect what was seen on the S/S16 catwalks, from the sheer, revealing fabrics at Rochas to silky gowns and slip dresses with lace detailing at Céline and Calvin Klein. Underwear is being presented as something to be seen, yet its very name defines its intended placement on the body as lying hidden beneath other layers.
“Its very name defines its intended placement on the body as lying hidden beneath other layers” Emily Gordon-Smith, head of fashion at Stylus, looks to popular culture to explain fashion’s embracing of the underwear as outerwear style. “This trend comes and goes. It was first popularised by Jean Paul Gaultier and Madonna in the 1980s – and its current revival reflects the ongoing interest in all things 1990s, with Kate Moss-like sheer slip dresses over tees and shirts being a key look.” Artus of Myla, meanwhile, believes that underwear being worn as outerwear solidifies women’s increased right to choose in today’s world. “Women play a huge part in the world now with their voices being heard and this creates a freedom to express themselves like never before. Choice is a huge influencer and women can choose to wear lingerie or not wear lingerie. There was a time when they didn’t have a choice and all women had to conform to society.” As free as we may be from the necessity of wearing corsets, conforming to one trend or another is still a pressure many women feel. “Our ancestors wore underwear for hygiene, protection and modesty, and

they wore structural garments designed to shape and support the fashions of the day, just like us today,” said Ehrman. Whether it be “the structure of 19thcentury corsetry reflecting a more formal society, or the current popularity of sports bras speaking volumes about our more active lifestyles,” it gives us a cultural barometer, added Gordon-Smith. Where shape and support are concerned, the exhibition also features a number of pieces designed for men, displayed alongside examples of promotional material that show the importance of advertising and celebrity endorsement – such as David Beckham for H&M – in supporting and reinforcing changing ideals. Sports stars may be a common feature in male underwear campaigns, but German supermodel-turned-entrepreneur Heidi Klum chose to create her own line, applying her personal experience of modelling lingerie and understanding how it fits in order to design the Heidi Klum Intimates range. Women’s athleticism also appears to be increasingly celebrated. “The borders between sportswear and everyday wear have blurred and tight-fitting clothing – especially sports leggings – is worn increasingly frequently for day-today activities. Although functionality is of vital importance, bra tops are now more frequently on display with a part to play in the wearer’s overall look. This athleisure trend is certain to develop further, spurring innovation in both sportswear and underwear,” believes Emily Potts, contributing analyst at Euromonitor International. And as for these changes, technological Whether it’s for you, your Illusion bra, £130, advancement looks to be key. partner or for the whole world to knickers, £45, Gilda & Pearl, “Comfort will continue to be a key see, underwear is clearly as hot a gildapearl.co.uk driver and will become even more topic as it ever was, with women relevant as we see advances in materials spending time and money on what – think smart textiles with greater is either a luxury or necessity, breathability, flexibility and moisturedepending on your viewpoint. the washable suit It’s not often the suit gets re-invented, but Jaeger’s new creation could be something of a game-changer. Launching this July, its new Washable Wool suit collection combines traditional craft and tailoring with technologically innovative fabric, meaning any elements that would have made the suit ‘dry clean only’ have been removed. Losing some of the structural elements and the lining also makes it far more lightweight, despite being woven from a wool flannel, and the less rigid silhouette makes it easy to dress either up or down. WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE Sibberi, producers of ‘tree’ waters including birch and maple, are bringing bamboo water to the market. It can’t be tapped (as with maple and birch) so Sibberi ‘presses’ the water out of the bamboo. Bamboo is the highest natural source of silica, a compound naturally present in the body that fades as we age, so bamboo water is a natural anti-ageing solution, and excellent for maintaining healthy skin, hair and nails. It’s also just as hydrating as coconut water and contains four times less sugar. It’s set to be our summer 2016 water of choice. Q&A...
with Manjit Gill, CEO of Binti, a charity promoting menstrual dignity for women Q: What is Binti’s mission? A: To normalise and raise awareness around menstruation and ensure access to hygienic sanitary protection. Binti enables women to sustainably produce sanitary towels, empowering local communities. Q: Why is Binti so important? A: Twenty-seven per cent of the world’s cervical cancer rate is in India due to inaccessible products. In Africa, 65 per cent of girls drop out of school when they start their periods because of the shame around bleeding. Some girls are banished from home as it is believed they might pollute the food or crop. Q: How can people help? A: Using #smashshame, share period stories through our social media sites and sign our petition on change.org to make menstruation education a standalone topic in UK schools. binti.co.uk

Taking it to the NEXT LEVEL It’s not often talked about, but it’s become more and more common. As the health and wellness trend shows no sign of abating, some find it hard to maintain a sense of balance and perspective. Is it unhealthy to be too healthy? WORDS: charlotte phillips

I
t’s not newsworthy that the millennial generation is more focused on health and well-being than ever before. We put chia seeds in our smoothies, eat avocado toast for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and don our Lycra workout clothes both in and out of the gym as a badge of pride. For the most part, it’s a healthy, positive trend, focused on self-improvement and longevity. It’s an exclusive, expensive club, but not a bad one to be a part of. That is, until it’s taken to the absolute extreme, resulting in what’s becoming an increasingly common psychological condition called orthorexia nervosa, an unhealthy obsession with healthy foods. “Where orthorexia comes into the frame is when health-conscious consumers take clean eating a step too far – devoting disproportionate amounts of time and effort to ensure and validate the purity and integrity of their foods,” says Mandy Saven, head of food, beverage and hospitality at research and advisory firm Stylus. Sufferers will only eat ‘pure’, ‘clean’ foods, from a very restricted list, and the aspiration to eat only ‘pure’ items can become an all-consuming psychological problem. In fact, says Mary George, senior press officer at the eating disorder charity BEAT, “there is a view that it may be more closely connected to OCD due to the nature of the illness, although it does also have similarities with anorexia nervosa”. As orthorexia doesn’t have a clinical diagnosis, it’s hard to quantify, but cases are on the rise. “There is anecdotally an increase in the instances of people having orthorexia and this may be exacerbated by the emphasis on what is termed ‘healthy eating’, which may prompt people to go beyond taking care and moving into fixation or obsession,” says George. Miriam Gubovic, nutritionist at Canary Wharf’s CPRESS, agrees. “The food industry is throwing a new diet at us every day and for many it becomes a challenge to find the right balance.”
Sufferers often hide their illness behind a feigned food intolerance: it’s more socially acceptable to cite being gluten free or lactose intolerant than to simply refuse certain items. It can start with a sufferer claiming to only eat organic foods, then vegan, then raw, until eventually there’s a very small number of foods deemed ‘clean’ enough. Tina McDuff is a 46-year-old mother of four. After beating anorexia, she continued to struggle with her approach to food. “It took me a further 15 years of ‘clean living’ to get through it all,” McDuff says. “I controlled everything – it had to be organic, a certain colour, vegetarian, vegan, only freshly made – kale, seaweed, spirulina. It got to the point where my babies were only given the same, as I was so determined to make them ‘super healthy’”. She goes on, “I would get them out of bed at 6am so we could all go swimming before school. I would also spend two hours
“The food industry is throwing a new diet at us every day... it’s a challenge to find the balance” every night at the gym.” How does this happen? For one thing, the role of the media is significant. “More imagery available on social media and the increase in marketed products for ‘fit’ bodies may well be affecting incidences of orthorexia,” says BEAT’s George. Platforms such as Instagram show pictures of attractive, slim celebrities or bloggers, all of whom can offer unsolicited and often nonmedical advice, such as cutting out dairy or red meat, which would only benefit a fraction of society. The sector of society who tend to focus on these blogs are young girls – impressionable and vulnerable. “Being food-savvy has become cultural capital, thanks to the proliferation of food and drink on social media channels and the influence of bloggers,” says Saven. “However, when this is
CANARY WHARF | 57
FEATURE
taken too far, it becomes puritanical and, ultimately, can be extremely alienating and restrictive for those dogmatically following ‘clean eating’ regimes.” Another potential cause in the spike of orthorexia cases is food labelling, Saven tells me. “I think there is still some way to go in terms of food labelling and how ‘clean’ and ‘natural’ product claims feed into that concern.” She goes on to say, “The haziness surrounding misleading product claims could be an influencing factor when it comes to orthorexic tendencies as consumers struggle to trust our existing labelling systems.” Last month, Dr Mark Berelowitz, an eating disorder specialist at the Royal Free Hospital in London, told The Sunday Times that over 80 per cent of his patients were following what they saw as a ‘clean’ diet, restricting whole food groups such as sugar, meat, dairy, carbohydrates and gluten. “Calling this kind of regime ‘clean’ is a sort of deliberate or accidental marketing myth that emphasises one approach to eating at almost any cost,” he says. Furthermore, according to research carried out by Mintel, between 2011 and 2015 there was a 202 per cent increase globally in food and drink launches containing the words ‘superfood’, ‘super fruit’ or ‘super grain’. Despite our ancestors thriving on simple foraged foods, we’re buying ‘pure’, expensive foods we can’t fully comprehend or even pronounce – algae, baobab, lucuma – despite the fact that chasing an entirely ‘pure’ lifestyle is by and large unobtainable.
58 | CANARY WHARF
“While superfoods can, of course, offer health-boosting attributes, I think media hype surrounding them has led to an unhealthy obsession with regards to chasing the next big thing,” remarks Saven. Evidently, when it comes to a person’s food choices, it’s hard to know where healthy eating stops and orthorexia begins. “There is a very fine line between what is normal healthy eating and when healthy eating becomes a great distress to a person,” says CPRESS’s Gubovic. There’s no denying that a focus on health is a positive thing. It is no secret that sugar in large quantities is bad for us, while the effects of reckless eating and obesity – cases are increasing in the UK – include diabetes, heart failure, or even death. Eating brownies made from black beans or avocado as opposed to refined sugar is progress, not a sign of orthorexia. Somewhat paradoxically, Gubovic suggests orthorexia cases could be reduced if healthy, reduced sugar options were to become the norm. “Eating pure and clean foods should not even be a question, but made a standard by the industry. And this is the pitfall,” she says. “There are not many places yet that offer honest and clean products, and so one has to go on a search, which undeniably can become the focus of one’s attention and a problem.” Hopefully, we have reached a stage where orthorexia cases have peaked and will start to drop in numbers. “I think we are at the tipping point of a new wave of culinary consciousness, which will herald a more balanced and sensible approach to eating,” reports Saven. As with most things, it would appear the answer lies in a sense of balance. Enjoying regular exercise and opting for the healthy food option most of the time will lead to increased energy, better sleep patterns and healthy skin, nails and body weight. Anyone choosing clean, plant-based foods, most of the time, is following recommended and sensible advice. That said – life is to be enjoyed, and indulging is a key part of that. If you make nutritious eating the norm, then there’s plenty of leeway for a summer barbecue and ice cream. CPRESS, Crossrail Place; BEAT, b-eat.co.uk; stylus.com; mintel.com

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Summer Loving A visit to Plateau shows KATY PARKER how the restaurant’s new grill menu is hotting up Canary Wharf’s restaurant scene At a time when one is frequently mired by desires to be ‘bikini body ready’ and constantly weaving in and out of a variety of diet plans, nothing feels better than an evening of unadulterated indulgence – in the form of a delicious slap-up meal. My dining destination of choice is Plateau – a restaurant that forms part of the D&D London group. Perched above Third Space gym, the eatery overlooks Canada Square Park and affords an excellent vantage point for viewing One Canada Square and the surrounding skyscrapers. Fortunately for my guest and me, we are seated right next to the window and we gaze out upon the area with a sense of ease as we sip our welcome glasses of Champagne. Now feeling fully relaxed, we take a moment to peruse the menu. We are sampling the restaurant’s new grill menu, which has arrived just in time for summer with a tantalising range of fresh fish and meat dishes. To begin, we opt for the Colchester Rock oysters with ginger and cucumber ponzu. At this point I must confess: when I order oysters it is often just for the novelty factor and consequently I find myself
downing them with a similar sense of distaste to the way you would reluctantly stomach a dodgy shot of whisky. This oyster experience, however, was a completely different kettle of fish (excuse the pun). Each oyster was seasoned to perfection, with an overriding taste of ginger, and went down exquisitely. A dash of Tabasco on top added an extra kick to what was already a gratifying starter and we washed them down with a glass of Chardonnay, which had been expertly matched to the dish by our knowledgeable waiter. On to the next course, and we enjoy baked whole sea bass with samphire and lemon and fennel confit, accompanied by tender stem broccoli with chilli
and sesame. Our ever-attentive waiter removes my fish from the bone and again chooses a world-class wine to complement the meal; this time it is a Sancerre. The fish is flaky, well-seasoned and perfectly cooked. It’s enhanced superbly by the confit, which suprises me with its strength of flavour, while the samphire adds texture to the plate.
Each oyster was seasoned to perfection, with an overriding taste of ginger In the spirit of going to town in the eating stakes, we order dessert. I opt for the grilled peaches with brioche and mascarpone while my guest decides on the Bakewell slice with vanilla ice cream. The fresh, gently cooked peaches lighten up what would otherwise be a dense dish, and the combination of sweet bread, delicately flavoured vanilla cream and fruit is a winner in my book. Could there be a more perfect pudding for the summer months? Meanwhile, I hear nothing but contented grunts from the other side of the table, so I can only presume the Bakewell slice was welcomed with similar gusto. So give those holiday dreams a rest for a while, and focus on the pleasures that lie in store for us right here at home – and don’t forget to treat yourself. Plateau, Canada Square

Barbecuing with Big Easy When it comes to barbecuing, most of us are used to things being a little too well-done. Here to share the art of barbecue perfection is Jared Male, expert pit master at Canary Wharf’s Big Easy restaurant. What are the most common mistakes? With American barbecue, the biggest mistake you can make is rushing. It’s done when it’s done, so kick back, drink some beers and watch the smoke drift. What meats and cuts work best? You can smoke just about anything as long as the fat content’s right and you know what to do with it. For pork, I prefer using ribs. A lot of cuts of beef work well: short rib or brisket needs to cook low and slow to break down all the connective tissues and render the fat, or you could smoke a whole prime rib to medium rare, treating it like a roast. What are the most surprising things you can barbecue? Portobello mushroom caps work surprisingly well, as they absorb the smoke effectively. Spray a little olive oil on them, along with some seasoning, and smoke at about 110C for around 45 minutes. What is the best barbecue to invest in for cooking at home? If you want to spend some money and really hone your skills as a backyard barbecuer, I would invest in a Backwoods Smoker (backwoods-smoker.com). Otherwise, you can always figure out the basic techniques on a Weber. If you are feeling ambitious, you can look up designs and build one. Should you use different woods as well as charcoal? Charcoal is a great heat source but for me, American barbecue needs wood smoke. A lot of varieties of hardwoods and fruitwoods work well. My favourites are mesquite and pecan, though varieties of oak work well too. What do you drink with barbecue food? There’s only one answer for that, and that’s beer. Big Easy, Crossrail Place

Wanting to shape up for summer is nothing new, but with conflicting advice and various diet options, it’s hard to know the most effective option. The Canary Wharf team put three different diets to the test, with mixed success WORDS: charlotte phillips, katy parker and tiffany eastland

ieting is never easy, but when you’re not even sure you’re attempting a diet with proven success, it’s downright miserable. From juicing and the Cambridge Weight Plan to the lesserknown Protéifine diet, we’ve called in the experts and recorded our findings. Heed our experiences to make weight-loss decisions a whole lot easier.
the cambridge weight plan My Cambridge Weight Plan journey starts with a meeting with my consultant Jeremy. One of the brand’s ‘mobile consultants’, he conveniently comes to my office on a Monday morning to help me embark on my week-long weight-loss plan. A week prior, I had been sunning myself in Mallorca, gorging on cheese and almond Magnums by day and downing Aperol Spritz cocktails by night, and so I am treating this week as much as a detox as a chance to trim off some surplus pounds. My meeting with Jeremy is insightful – the man is a walking encyclopaedia on nutrition – and his nifty machine reveals some interesting information about my body, such as my fat and muscle percentages. After an extensive examination of the data available to him, Jeremy decides to put me on Step Two of the plan, which is a combination of meal replacement options and high-protein meals. Cambridge Consultants have all lost weight on the diet, so know exactly what you are going through and are on hand for those weak moments, when a slice of chocolate cake looks only too tempting, and Jeremy assures me I can call him any time. I leave armed with 21 sachets (three for each day), which are a range of soups, shakes and meals, with flavours including macaroni cheese, spaghetti
s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s
bolognese, maple and pecan porridge, oriental soup, and a blackberry and apple smoothie. I am permitted a healthy meal in the evening and a ‘milk quota’ so thankfully I don’t have to forgo my morning coffee. I start the week in high spirits, determined to do Jeremy proud and feel healthier when my time is done. In the evenings I prepare a tuna steak with vegetables or a cottage cheese salad and I spread my sachets out throughout the day; some are more appetising than others, but they succeed in sating the hunger until it’s time to have another. By day three I was feeling tired and struggled to stay away from the sugary treats in the office, but I powered through as I was starting to see results. Then came the weekend. I found this particularly tough as, like many other Londoners, my social life tends to revolve around occasions involving food and drink. And though it was hard, I did manage to persist with the plan, opting for plain chicken with vegetables when I went out and avoiding wine at all costs. Now at the end of the week, I definitely feel lighter. My waist (my problem zone) looks visibly smaller and my stomach flatter. But more than that, I feel healthier than I have in a long time and find that I actually have more energy than I used to in the evenings. The Cambridge Weight Plan is a manageable diet and perhaps more sustainable than other options out there, so long as you can lay off the wine… from £47.25 per week, cambridgeweightplan.com
the liquid diet When I was offered the chance to take part in a threeday liquid diet on behalf of Canary Wharf, I agreed without asking too many questions or looking too deeply into what it entailed.
feature
So, as the name suggests, a liquid diet involves getting all, or at least most, of your calories from drinks. And no, unfortunately, that doesn’t mean a bottle of Champagne. Some liquid diets are limited to juices or shakes for every meal, and my three-day diet would consist of, well, not a lot. A Pret A Manger fruit smoothie proved a tasty start to my morning, and certainly a breakfast option I’d happily opt for in the future, coming in at less than 250 calories. Delicious though it was, by lunch I was starving; more so than usual. I devoured the cauliflower and kale with black garlic soup by Soupologie, a dairy and gluten-free soup range stocked at Waitrose. While perfectly tasty, by the afternoon I was struggling and felt slightly light-headed at times; after all, the soup contained 111 calories, so my count for the day was at an all-time low. I pushed through to dinner, which was a Protein Haus smoothie. Founder Carli Wheatley told me to “choose a shake that has 250-300 calories or less, and your shake will ideally have some protein and fibre to keep you feeling satisfied”. Having been good all day, I rewarded myself with the Snickers shake, which tasted wonderfully indulgent but contained less than 400 calories. Miraculously, I got so full halfway through, I could barely finish it. Day two followed the same pattern, however, for lunch I opted for the curried sweet potato soup in the hope that the thicker consistency would keep me satisfied for longer, and happily, it did. The second day was much easier, as was the third, but I think I would have struggled to get through another. In just three days, I lost a solid four pounds – a great result, but would I inflict this upon myself

again? Perhaps if time’s not on my side and I have a dress to get into, but not if I’m aiming to lose weight and keep it off. An all-liquid diet is unsustainable, but I can see some merit in replacing one or two solid meals to reduce your overall calorie intake – though do consult a doctor, and don’t expect it to be easy. the personaliseD experience Despite being no novice to diets, I’m also no novice to enjoying copious amounts of food, meaning my eternal quest for slimmer thighs remains as elusive as ever. With a big family wedding in three short weeks, I call in the big guns: namely, nutritionist Kim Pearson at Canary Wharf’s EF Medispa. My first lesson is this: even for the well-informed, a nutritionist is worth the money, first in holding you accountable when will power wanes (being tapemeasured by a stranger is incentivising, to say the least) and because your plan can be professionally tailored to you, taking into account lifestyle and medical background. Pearson’s first step is sending
72 | CANARY WHARF
me for a blood test to check for underlying reasons why I wouldn’t lose weight (such as an under-active thyroid), as well as any vitamin deficiencies that would prevent a diet plan from working optimally. Results all in as normal, Pearson formulates a personalised plan, immediately adding a concoction of vitamins, minerals and essential fats to my regime. Pearson puts me on EF Medispa’s Well Woman plan, which focuses around the meal-replacement Protéifine diet, only available via a doctor or nutritionist. Five low-carbohydrate meals per day put the body into ketosis (fat-burning mode), where the body uses up stored fat rather than carbohydrates for energy, further aided by a recommended daily two tablespoons of olive oil. It’s protein-based, but not generically so: exact protein requirements are dependent on one’s own weight. Meals include toast, soup, pudding and biscuits, all made from natural protein sources, such as pea, egg and milk, delivered to my door in a two-week supply. They’re tasty, satisfying both savoury and sweet cravings (the dark chocolate afternoon pick-me-up is a lifesaver), and while portion sizes are very small, after an admittedly difficult three days, my stomach adjusts. On the Protéifine diet, I enjoy the fact that all meals are ready-made, making it so prescribed and formulaic that it’s impossible to deviate or cheat. There’s also a list of low-carbohydrate vegetables that can be eaten in unlimited quantities, which I make the most of each evening when the thought of such a teeny dinner is a tad dismal. Whenever it does get hard, Pearson is constantly on hand for support – one day I eat dinner at 4pm, a new personal low, but generally I eat every three hours; more frequently than I would normally, and there’s minimal preparation. It’s boring and antisocial turning down meals with friends, but results make it worthwhile. In two weeks, I lose four pounds and, more importantly, my centimetre measurements around my waist and thighs have come down significantly, which is a more dominant factor in looking slimmer and tighter. I’m pleased that my skin, hair and nails are in good shape, too. Weight loss is often accompanied by irritability, boredom or headaches, but I’ve experienced none, and feel great. And once off the plan, while I won’t be giving up bread, wine or icecream indefinitely, it has kickstarted a more mindful way of eating and readjusted how I think about portion control, which I call a true diet success. Ibiza: land of the fit and healthy

nternational fitness retreats are having a moment. Thanks to our growing obsession with healthy living, the trendiest way to experience Ibiza now is to ditch the superclubs and embrace the superfoods. Among the best of these is 38 Degrees North at the five-star Aguas de Ibiza resort in the northeast region of Santa Eulalia. Each retreat has a different focus but is comprised of the same basics: varied exercise classes and wellbeing workshops, along with pre-planned healthy meals. I’m experiencing three days out of the seven-day women-only Body:ReSet retreat. Lead trainer Claire calls me the day before I fly to discuss my goals and expectations and talk through the itinerary – a mixture of cardio circuits, hiking, yoga, Pilates, boxing, suspension training (TRX) and core conditioning, plus nutrition and mindfulness classes. Training begins at 9am on Monday with a fitness test, followed by a two-hour walk through the

mountains. Lunch is a carefully devised smoothie, salad and chicken. Next up is high-intensity circuit training. Each class lasts between 30-60 minutes, followed by a break, so although you’re pushed hard during the workouts, it doesn’t feel like a treacherous boot camp. There are around eight classes a day. By the end of Insanity training on day two, I’m exhausted but sleep better that night than I have done in months, and wake up raring to go the next day. I return home feeling and looking fit, healthy, toned and energised. And that’s just after three days. Imagine how good I would feel after the full week? from £1,825, including six nights bed and breakfast and five days’ lunch at Aguas de Ibiza, aguasdeibiza.com/en. Lima:

“Y

mark the start of our epic culinary journey. We’re at his restaurant, Central, in Lima. Regularly voted number one in Latin America, it’s now considered fourth best in the world too, and Martínez’s 17-course taster menu, Elevations, is based on dishes with ingredients from a range of

altitudes, giving diners ‘a vertical taste’ of Peru. “With every diner, I have just one chance to surprise and impress,” Martínez says. He disappears into the kitchen and returns with Diversity of Corn, a dish boasting 14 types of corn, including a corn-based leche de tigre (a citrus-based marinade used to cure seafood in ceviche, more on that later), a delicate corn crisp, and deep purple and yellow corn, which he’s somehow crafted into the shape of a bee. We’re introduced to native ingredients few Peruvians, yet alone foreigners, have heard of: cushuro, a caviar-like seaweed found at 3,000 metres in the rainy season, edible chaco clay from the highlands, tunta, a type of tuber, and airampo, a magenta-coloured cactus from the Andes. Peru’s fusion of Spanish, indigenous, African
and Asian influences makes it a particularly exciting cuisine. Over the past few years, thanks largely to innovative chefs, its culinary scene has blossomed. The country has been named ‘Best Culinary Destination’ in the World Travel Awards, opened a museum dedicated solely to Peruvian food and discovered that 40 per cent of its three million annual visitors take part in gastronomic tourism. My husband and I decide to join them. At the five-star Belmond Miraflores Park hotel in Lima, round the corner from Central restaurant and complete with spa and rooftop pool, public relations director Tula Castañeda ushers us into the bar. We have pisco sours, the national drink made from grape brandy, along with ceviche – fresh, bite-sized raw fish, traditionally marinated in lime,

chilli and coriander. It’s a typical Latin American dish and the hotel’s version is made with flounder, served in scallop shells. “Nowadays, Lima has a great gourmet scene,” Castañeda says. “Twenty years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined that locals would be queuing to eat at Tragaluz (Belmond’s fine-dining restaurant). But today, when it comes to food, luxury is not about being snobbish; it’s about being regional.” At breakfast, served overlooking the Pacific Ocean, I see what she means. Along with quinoa topped with cress, there are fat olives from the desert town of Ica, premium salt from Cusco, tamales (corn dumplings), tumbo fruit and, my favourite, kiwicha pop, a protein-packed Andean roasted grain supposedly traditionally loved by the Incas and now, by NASA, thanks to its nutritional qualities. A stroll round nearby Surquillo market with Belmond’s chefs Jean Paul Barbier and Johan Medina reveals even more, from colourful fruit and knobbly tubers to some of the country’s 3,000 fabled papas (potatoes) with yellow, black and rose-coloured skins. Back in the hotel’s kitchen, we’re treated to a private cookery lesson, slicing beef for lomo saltado (beef stir-fry), a typical fusion dish, which we enjoy with Inca Kola, which tastes of bubblegum. While many tour operators in Lima offer a wide range of group cookery classes, pisco tastings and

‘jungle food’ experiences, Delectable Peru, run by local Ericka La Madrid, focuses on tailor-made gourmet tours. “Most visitors want to try ceviche,” she says, “but there are many other foods to try too.” I tell her we’re looking for something different – and special. She suggests premium Peruvian chocolate, and within hours has arranged a bespoke visit to a small, chocolate factory in the exclusive San Borja district, east of the city.
“When it comes to food, luxury is not about being snobbish; it’s about being regional” We meet Samir Stagnard and Eduardo Lecca in an office cluttered with international awards. Their chocolate, priced at £7 a bar, and made from a single Peruvian bean, is called Cacaosuyo. “Suyo is an Inca word meaning yours,” Samir says, “but it was also used to refer to the Incas’ ever-expanding empire.” “So you’re out to conquer the world?” I joke. He shakes his head. “It’s not about scale,” he replies. “It’s all about taste and identity.” Cacaosuyo’s beans are harvested in the wild by the indigenous Awajún people from the Piura region of northwest Peru. I try a bar called Lakuna; a fruity kick dissolves into a hint of honey. The chocolate contains 70 per cent cacao but there’s no

bitter edge. “It’s all in the bean,” Stagnard says proudly. My husband and I end our culinary extravaganza with dinner at Astrid y Gastón, run by Gastón Acurio, Peru’s answer to Jamie Oliver, and his wife Astrid Gutsche, an acclaimed pastry chef. Gutsche welcomes us whole-heartedly to their restaurant. She enthuses about pastry, chocolate and “everything sweet”, and describes herself as a culinary painter. “I experiment with texture and colour,” she says. The tasting menu includes their signature cut, guinea pig, served roasted with ricotta and peanuts, lobster with pig’s jowl, and conga fish with tiny clams. But I can’t wait for the desserts: a sorbet-like chilcano (pisco cocktail) with green apple and mint, lucuma, a fibrous fruit, fashioned into the smoothest of ice creams, and chocolate cake with oregano croutons. The dishes combine coolness, creaminess and crunchiness; the presentation is exquisite and each mouthful is a treat. Astrid proves a perfect painter. No doubt about it, Lima spoiled our palates. ne TripAdvisor review of the Ferrari factory in Maranello, in the EmiliaRomagna region of northern Italy, describes visiting the site as no less than a ‘religious experience’. Such a proclamation could be taken with a pinch of salt were it not treated so seriously by the purveyors of the prancing horse themselves. Luxury brands have always sought to create a compelling backstory for their products, imbuing them with a sense of quality and value beyond what can be seen or touched. Turning the retail process from an impassive transaction into an emotional experience has been expertly mastered by Ferrari. The iconic Italian

sportscar maker has married a powerful brand identity with a strategic business model to produce what is every company’s Holy Grail: deep-seated customer loyalty. Ferrari effectively operates on a ‘made-to-order’ basis, always producing one car fewer than the demand of the market. Consequently, while other car makers are forever sitting on unsold stock, Ferrari has none. The beauty of this model is that it is selfperpetuating: exclusivity works organically to create a recurrent level of fresh demand. Endowing every Ferrari owner with a sense that they’ve attained something unobtainable to the masses is enhanced by extensive customisation options. In short, every new Ferrari leaving

the assembly line has undergone some level of personalisation, with not one sold in standard form. The genesis of this directive can be traced back to the 1950s and ’60s, when it was standard practice for skilled craftsmen to mould every aspect of a Ferrari to its owner’s tastes, similar to how a Savile Row tailor is enlisted for a bespoke suit. Then, in the late 1990s, Ferrari customers began choosing the colours and fabrics to build their dream automobile and, in 2011, this was ramped up to the next level with the introduction of the Tailor-Made programme. Under this arrangement, clients get to make personalisation choices not at their local dealership but in a dedicated studio at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, home to Ferrari’s production line for more than 70 years. Customers who sign up for the programme are flanked by a personal designer who assists them in creating their car, only stepping in when their wishes are deemed inconsistent with the Ferrari brand (a request for zebra-skin trim or all-denim seating, for example, would not make the grade). Customisation is offered in three collections: Scuderia (inspired by Ferrari’s rich racing heritage); Classica (which takes styling cues from classic Ferrari GTs); and Inedita (geared towards experimentation and innovation). Clients may specify everything from the exterior livery to the cabin trim, via a choice of finishes, accessories, materials, treatments and shades. I was invited to experience this for myself earlier this year; the crucial unfortunate difference being that the car I was to design would not make it beyond a computer screen. On arrival, I was taken to the studio to meet the design team, who occupy a large room bedecked with Ferrari paraphernalia and a real-life California T – the hard-top convertible grand tourer launched by
Ferrari in 2014 and my canvas for the day. Keen to test the programme’s experimental prowess, I request that my car is personalised from the vaunted Inedita collection. I am taken through to a room that can only be described as resembling the curtain department in Liberty. The range of textiles seems neverending: Alcantara, tech fabrics, cashmere, velvet, leather, carbon-fibre…there’s even © FERRARI DESIGN a bulletproof option. Little wonder that years of research have gone into the 200-plus materials available. Clients who have a certain textile in mind can ask the design team to source it for them – although they must always meet strict guidelines. Eco-friendly, sustainable and natural materials are prioritised, while cabin materials have to be flameproof and, depending on their use, also need to meet the criteria for load, grip and wear. With my materials chosen, I get to work on the exterior, eschewing the classic red livery and opting for ‘Blue Chiaro’, a bright blue. For contrast, I ask for yellow calipers and a silver Nike-esque swoosh across the car’s side panels, while diamond finish rims and silver exhaust pipes add a dash of bling. For the interior, I ask the designer to show me graphics of the various seating options. I settle on light brown, but in their central part I add vertical ribs in a beige woollen fabric. Elsewhere, I add a few more colour effects with a yellow rev counter, yellow Ferrari insignia in the centre of the steering wheel, blue seatbelt straps and blue sterling leather on the airbag zones. Finally, perhaps it’s my yachting background, but I can’t resist adding a spot of teak on the grab handles, tunnel inserts and across the inside of the boot. You can judge the results for yourself. As for my general thoughts on the Tailor-Made programme, there’s no doubting the benefits of engaging customers in the design process and, for car owners, it certainly creates a more powerful connection than simply buying off the assembly line. Cars have an almost unique capacity to inspire passion, emotion and excitement. When it comes to those particular realms of human experience, Ferrari remains the benchmark for all others. ferrari.com

Maserati drives into the muddy world of the SUV, but can’t leave behind its connections as a performance brand, writes MATTHEW CARTER
s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s
motoring
CANARY WHARF | 93
I
t has a long and glorious motor racing history, a back catalogue crammed with wonderful sports cars and performance saloons and a name – Maserati – that simply sounds fast. So imagine the dilemma facing the company when it realised that the car everyone wants these days is an SUV, a large four-wheel drive vehicle that the Americans call a truck. How would such a thing fit into the Maserati canon? The answer turned out to be fairly simple. With a little help from friends at Ferrari, they’ve produced Levante, a car they’re calling ‘The Maserati of SUVs’. In other words, performance remains at the fore. In truth, modern SUVs are a long way from what we Europeans might consider trucks. The Porsche Cayenne was arguably the first sporting SUV but now the choice is huge. Joining established machines such as the Range Rover Sport and BMW X5, are newcomers, such as the compact Jaguar F-Pace and Porsche Macan and the large and luxurious Bentley Bentayga.
s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s
Even Rolls-Royce is getting in on the SUV act, with Project Cullinan scheduled for release in 2018. Faced with those market trends, Maserati simply had to produce an SUV. It is expected that Levante, named after an easterly wind that blows through the Mediterranean, will account for half the company’s annual sales, making it the most significant Maserati for many a year. When it arrives in the UK later this year, with prices starting at just over £54,000, Levante will compete with the Porsche Cayenne as well as the SUV/Coupé crossovers from BMW (X6) and Mercedes (GLE Coupe). So here we are, driving Levante carefully down a gravel-strewn hill in the middle of the Italian countryside rather than blasting it around a racetrack. The intelligent four-wheel drive system’s hill descent control is working its magic and progress is slow but sure-footed – just as it should be off-road. Even though Maserati and Jeep are both part of the same company, Maserati has not turned to its American sibling for help with its four-wheel
motoring
drive package. Rather, Levante uses much of the hardware developed for the Ghibli saloon, but comes as standard with an intelligent all-wheel drive system and height-adjustable air suspension – both vital elements if the car’s SUV credentials are going to be accepted. Air suspension automatically lowers the normal ride height by 35mm at speed for better aerodynamic efficiency and raises it by as much as 40mm when off-road. We need that as our loose surface course includes climbs and descents, mud, rocks and ruts, with the occasional water splash thrown in for good measure. Levante copes admirably. In truth, it’s not the most demanding off-road course in the world, but this isn’t meant to be a sump-cracking, chassis-wrecking test of the car. Of course, in the real world, the latest Maserati will spend most of its life on the road with only the occasional foray off the beaten track. So how does it work on the road? The good news is that it drives like a Maserati should. Under normal road conditions the 4x4 system sends all of the drive to the back wheels, making the car handle like a Maserati saloon. If conditions change, however, it takes just 150 milliseconds for the drive to be split in any ratio up to 50:50 front to rear. With standard air suspension, the ride is extremely comfortable in Normal mode and suitably taut in Sport mode. It looks the part, too. Maserati has decided its SUV should be more coupé than square rigger, so it has a high-waisted side profile, powerful rear haunches and a sloping roof line. It also has frameless doors, just like a sports car. The upright front, however, is a reminder that this is an SUV not a sports car – the large, toothy grille dominates. It is also one of those cars that looks better in the flesh than in pictures: Levante has real presence. It’s pretty good inside, too. The boot is large and the interior roomy: this is a genuinely practical Maserati that’s both sporting and luxurious at the same time. Quality leather dominates the interior
and there’s even the option of a Zegna silk headlining. A raft of advanced driver systems is available, including Hill Descent Control, Land Departure Warning, Surround View Cameras and Forward Collision Warning, while the dashboard is dominated by an 8.4-inch colour touchscreen that operates the latest Fiat Group infotainment system, which now incorporates Apple CarPlay. So that only leaves performance to talk about, which is where the Ferrari connection can be revealed. The top model is the Levante S, powered by a Ferrari-built twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, developing a heady 430hp. This potent powerpack turns Levante into a snarling beast with an urge totally in line with the Maserati image. Performance is exceptional and accompanied by the sort of soundtrack that only a Ferrari engine and specially tuned sports exhaust can produce. Top speed is 165mph while the 0-62mph dash takes just 5.2 seconds, as the smooth shifting eight-speed automatic works its way seamlessly through the gears. There are, of course, a couple of downsides to this engine: thirst and emissions, both of which are higher than is strictly politically correct these days. But even this can’t disguise the simple truth: Levante really is the Maserati of SUVs. maserati.co.uk

CROSSRAIL PLACE ROOF GARDEN WELCOMES BLOOM The Early Bloom Community Festival set the tone for summer with a series of dance, musical and theatrical performances in the awardwinning Crossrail Place Roof Garden. Members of the audience and passers-by were treated to dance performances from IMD Legion, music from the Isle of Dogs Choir and National Youth Jazz Orchestra, in addition to theatrical pieces from
Pollyanna Theatre and Space Youth Theatre. Further music and theatre events will continue throughout the summer and a full timetable can be found at canarywharf.com. Community groups and local performers who are interested in participating in the Late Bloom festival in August still have time to register their interest at space.org.uk.
CANARY WHARF SUPPORTS BIKE WEEK 2016 As part of Bike Week 2016, Canary Wharf Group partnered with Bespoke Cycling to host a Bespoke Cycling Drop-In session in Crossrail Place Roof Garden to encourage members of the public to cycle to work. With experts on hand to answer questions and share advice on safety, clothing and equipment, the event provided key information for those new to cycling.
CANARY WHARF GROUP VOLUNTEERS HELP OUT AT LOCAL FUN DAY Employees from Canary Wharf Group joined volunteers from Café Forever, City of Peace and HSBC to lend a hand at the local Fun Day on the Isle of Dogs in support of the charity, Café Forever. The Park Café Outreach Project aims to bring life to unused outside space and helps connect hundreds of people to long-term employment throughout the year at Café Forever in St John’s Park. By offering the community free activities such as face painting, group games and sport challenges, the Fun Day was hugely successful in bringing the community together.

rtists Fionnuala Boyd and Leslie Evans have worked collaboratively since 1968 when they met as students in Leeds. As painters, they used photography as a research tool, building banks of images for reference, which they combined in ambiguous compositions that were both surreal and immaculately executed. With the advent of digital imaging they embraced the possibility of creating photographic compositions in their own right in a range of scale, from colossal to diminutive. Their pleasure in detail – as in their painting – has remained undiminished and can be observed in these works created especially to fit the lofty walls of the Lobby of One Canada Square. This exhibition marks Boyd and Evans’ first installation of a collection of monumental compositions – narrative in content and panoramic in reach – related to their excursions to the deserts of South Western America, a temperate rainforest in Washington State, as well as a huge English beech tree. boydandevans.com
SPLASH (South Poplar & Limehouse Action for Secure Housing), based in St Mathias Community Centre in Poplar, works with the local community. Last summer more than 350 adults and children worked on an art project that resulted in a public art display on the Glass Bridge (Poplar DLR Footbridge). The participants were from the communities of Poplar High Street, Tower Hamlets College, Canary Wharf and Crossrail – collectively known as the 4Cs. Drawing on the history of the East India Company, the panels highlight Dockland heritage, illustrating the ships, cargoes and people who made this area what it is today through maps of historical trade routes, images of modes of travel and goods, flora and fauna. splashcommunity.com/

y the time you read this, the shadow of Brexit that has been looming large over the property market will have been removed. Whichever way the vote goes it will be a blessed relief for the uncertainty to have been removed from the marketplace. Whenever there is uncertainty, the property market is one area that takes a stumble, be it general election, referendums or tax changes. While there’s no doubt that there has been a reduction in buyers willing to commit pre-referendum, it is not all doom and gloom. There are opportunities out there, and deals are still being agreed on a weekly basis, both to investors and end users. We recently launched a scheme in Dartford and the entire first phase was sold out in approximately three weeks, so the market really isn’t ‘bad’ at the moment. Times like these make choosing an agent all the more important to ensure that your property doesn’t just become another on that agent’s list.
PROPERTY “The Bank of Mum and Dad will help 305,900 of their loved ones buy a home in 2016, giving an average of £17,500 to each to fund the purchase of £77bn worth of property. This means the Bank of Mum and Dad will be involved in 25 per cent of all mortgage transactions in 2016.” –Legal & General
Times like these make choosing an agent all the more important to ensure that your property doesn’t just become another on that agent’s list Of course, fees are important as is the price that the property is marketed at, but the most important thing is to employ a motivated agent who you believe is going to go the extra mile to ensure that gold price is achieved for what will be one of your most valuable assets. Canary Wharf continues to flourish as a destination for buyers from all walks of life. We sold to more than 78 different nationalities last year, showing that the area really is a worldwide destination. The safety and security of the estate coupled with the phenomenal transport links, facilities within close proximity and modern housing stock, make Canary Wharf an extremely desirable destination.

A
nnual rental value growth in prime central London declined to -2.3 per cent in May, which was the lowest rate since February 2014. This compares to a figure of 4.2 per cent a year ago in the month of the UK general election, which was the strongest month for annual rental value growth since December 2011. The positive figure then reflected the fact that many buyers were uncertain over the trajectory of the sales market and instead decided to rent as a short-term measure. However, uncertainty has also since affected
Uncertainty has also since affected vendors, who have opted to let out their properties until greater clarity emerges vendors, who have opted to let out their properties until greater clarity emerges around the short-term prospects for price growth in the sales market. As supply levels have risen, the balance of power has shifted towards tenants and rental values have fallen. The number of new lettings properties coming onto the market in prime central London between January and April 2016 increased 18.1 per cent compared to 2015. In the same period, the number of tenancies started declined -5.4 per cent and the number of new prospective tenants registering fell -2.3 per cent, underlining the growth in the amount of rental properties compared to tenants. The number of viewings rose 5.9 per cent over the same period, highlighting how tenants have become increasingly selective and take longer before agreeing letting deals. This shift in the balance of supply and demand has taken place against a jittery global financial backdrop, which means many corporate tenants, particularly at a senior executive level, have reduced budgets or curbed relocation plans.

We believe in being Frank. That means straight-talking, honesty and doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. Turning up on time. Phone calls promptly returned. Doing the paperwork. Being polite and friendly. And while our team are enthusiastic, energetic and empowered to make things happen, they know that dishonesty – such as inflating an asking price to secure an instruction – simply won’t be tolerated. It’s not fancy. It’s just frank.

y the time this column goes to print we will finally know the outcome of the EU referendum. It’s no secret that the property market has seen a marked slowdown in activity for both sales and lettings, while many people sat on the fence to await a better understanding of how their industry would be affected by the referendum result. It has been reported that, even if we remain a member of the EU, the market may not recover as quickly as we would like. The pound has already shown signs of weakening due to the ripple effect of so much uncertainty. Having worked in the property sector for almost 20 years, I have never before seen so many factors affect the market over a 24-month period. We have seen stamp duty changes for higher value properties, stamp duty changes for second homes and investment purchases, taxation changes for overseas homeowners and further changes are due for landlords in 2017. This raft of new legislation will, however, only prove to be a minor stumbling block for the property market and will not cause a major slowdown. Historically, trends show that it’s only when interest rates start to rise that the industry comes to a momentary standstill. The UK has always had a housing shortage and this predicament will certainly not change in the short term. So, as long as we need properties to live in, the market will always get its legs back. On a separate note, Franklyn James is extremely proud to be taking part in and sponsoring the Limehouse Almost 5k Fun-Run this year. So dust off your running shoes and come on down for the Limehouse Almost 5k Fun-Run in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Limehouse Festival.
uy-to-let investment in the Docklands area has slowed considerably since the changes in both stamp duty and rental income taxation. That does not mean that investing in the London property market has suddenly become an unattractive proposition. In fact – providing you are looking at the medium to longterm – investing in property is still a very appealing option for those with investable funds. If you are considering investing in buy-to-let property, my advice is simple; do your homework. You should invest in an area that you believe will outperform other areas over the period you intend to have your money tied up. Canning Town, for instance, makes a strong case for investors. The transport links are excellent, Crossrail is coming, the entire area is the subject of a £3.7bn regeneration master plan and property is still undervalued in comparison to other nearby locations. It also benefits from a dense supply of new-build apartments. Mortgage lenders are also offering some excellent buy-tolet products with incredibly low rates, but this is not the only financial consideration when investing in property. Before making a 25-year financial commitment it is important to do the maths. If it’s a leasehold property you are buying, make sure you have factored in service charges, ground rents and so forth. Consider both void periods and agents’ fees when running the income versus expenditure equation. The more in-depth financial appraisal you undertake, the better informed your decision will be. I think it’s also important to decide on how hands-on you want to be before you start. If you are a busy professional, you may need the property managed on your behalf. Only too often we see clients unable to cope with being a landlord. This can easily be alleviated by finding a competent and trustworthy managing agent. A good lettings and management company will walk you through the process, making sure you and your property are fully compliant with all relevant legislation. If you are considering investing in property and would like any advice I would be delighted to hear from you.

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE: GETTING ONTO THE HOUSING LADDER
Diana Alam, head of residential development sales, JLL
To what extent will the implementation of the Starter Home policy address the increasing disparity between house price and wage growth? The goalposts have been shifting for would-be first-time buyers over several years, with house price growth outstripping wage growth by a ratio of five to one in some parts of the UK. The Government’s Starter Homes policy unveiled last November will make it easier for aspiring homeowners to get on the ladder by restricting the effects of this disparity. Crucially, Starter Homes will be capped at £450,000 in London and £250,000 outside the capital, ensuring the target remains the same for an aspiring homeowner saving for their first purchase. JLL research shows that by constraining price growth, a couple in their 20s and early 30s would be able to save to buy a maximum priced Starter Home in less than half the number of years it would take to buy the current average-priced first-time buyer home. Who will benefit most from the forthcoming policy? Starter Homes are available to first-time buyers who are at least 23 years of age,
142 | CANARY WHARF
but under the age of 40. They are most likely to benefit working people in the ‘squeezed middle’ or ‘generation rent’ who are ineligible for affordable housing, but currently unable to buy a home. They’re likely to be couples without children who have higher than average salaries and good savings already in place. Analysis by Shelter suggests a purchaser of a London Starter Home would need an income of £77,000 and a deposit of £98,000. The policy is therefore only likely to support the needs of a relatively small population in the capital. Can you identify any shortcomings in the forthcoming policy? And how may it be amended for greater impact? The Starter Homes policy is the Government’s flagship affordable housing solution, with the target of delivering 200,000 Starter Homes over the course of this Parliament. However, the biggest shortcoming with the policy is that the homes delivered under the policy will revert to full market value after a period of circa eight to ten years. That’s fundamentally wrong – it should remain a market discounted product.
It should be delivered in perpetuity. Unfortunately that possibility has been ruled out by the Government. Given this, Starter Homes should remain affordable housing units for as long as possible – at least ten years with a tapered approach to the sale of the property between years five and ten. This would be a more robust approach and would reduce the risk of a peak in sales and market distortion at a particular point in time. What advice do you have for those wishing to take advantage of the forthcoming policy? Starter Homes have already received large levels of interest, so aspiring purchasers should register their intent on the Government’s Starter Homes’ website as soon as possible. Following registration, prospective buyers will receive updates on schemes local to them as well as any other locations they have expressed interest in. It is likely that a lot of Starter Homes will be built in regeneration areas, and it’s likely they will gentrify quickly if Starter Homes can attract a lot of emotionally invested, high-earning first-time buyers to that location.

ising 41 storeys above the River Thames is London’s latest residential address, South Bank Tower. Residents of the 193 superior apartments are ideally placed to enjoy the celebrated cultural attractions and fine dining of the South Bank, while also benefiting from five-star residents’ facilities and services, which offer the best in luxury living. Independent real estate firm, CIT, has unveiled a new collection of apartments, which have been created by renowned design practices 1508 London, Goddard Littlefair, Studio Ashby and Rachel Winham. Inspired by world-class design inside and out, the new residences showcase high-rise living at its very best, in an unrivalled central riverside location. Ranging from lateral to duplex apartments, these new turnkey properties offer purchasers a chance to preview new vistas across the capital, as well as appreciate ways in which homes can be dressed and how life can be lived at South Bank Tower.
The design visions capture the vibrancy, culture and artistic heritage of the South Bank, from 1508 London’s colour palette of rich emerald green velvet drawn from the building’s 1970s origins, through to Studio Ashby’s art-inspired, 24th-floor apartment with its strong lines mirroring those of the neighbouring architecture. Iconic London landmarks such as The Shard are reflected within Rachel Winham’s interiors, while the sunset views from the west-facing, 36th-floor duplex have inspired Goddard Littlefair’s colour palette of rusts and ochres alongside grey, oyster and soft blues. Each apartment showcases the highest level of specification including wooden flooring, custom-made kitchens with marble splashbacks, hand-crafted joinery and state-of-the-art home automation systems, all of which represent CIT’s high standards of design and attention to detail, which can be found throughout South Bank Tower. St John’s Way St John’s Way is a large multi-phase development and forms part of Peabody’s St John’s Hill regeneration project in Battersea. Designed by architects Hawkins/Brown, the buildings comprise 528 new homes with one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments and houses, while the adjoining 13,600 sqm of communal and commercial space will feature art installations, children’s play areas, a new public square and a wildflower garden. Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common, as well as Battersea Park, are
also found nearby. The spacious interiors of the apartments, which have varied layouts to suit different tastes and come with a balcony or private garden, have underfloor heating throughout, oak timber flooring in living areas and come with fully fitted kitchens with integrated appliances. Solar panels will also serve the development and should go some way towards reducing residents’ energy bills. from £690,000 for a two-bedroom apartment

Chiswick Gate Inspired by London’s classic residential squares, the properties at Berkeley Homes’ Chiswick Gate development will enjoy views over the beautifully landscaped, pedestrianised boulevard or the lush garden square, which forms the heart of this new community. “For many people the outside space of a home is just as important as the living space inside, especially for buyers in London,” says Tim Pettman, sales director at Berkeley Homes West London. The properties also boast private outdoor spaces, from generous balconies and terraces to private lawns and sunken courtyard gardens in selected homes. The three-, four- and five-bedroom townhouses exude character and style with an elegant mix of classical features, such as delicate cornicing, impressive staircases, and charming sash windows with Portland stone sills. As well as these larger properties, a select number of spacious one-, two- and threebedroom apartments and two- and three-bedroom penthouses are also available to purchase. Paying homage to the history of the site – which was formerly occupied by the Cherry Blossom shoe polish factory – the apartments’ warehouse-style design is reflected by expanses of floor-to-ceiling glazing and the imaginative interiors, which provide large, modern and flexible living spaces. Residents will also enjoy a gym and concierge service. from £749,950 for a two-bedroom apartment
Wapping Riverside Galliard Homes has launched a brand new show apartment to showcase the design of the final phase of its Wapping Riverside development. The overall scheme has 31 apartments with ten forming this final phase, including the show apartment which is for sale. Designed by Nicola Fontanella of Argent, its nautical blue and cream shades and reflective surfaces reflect the development’s riverside location, while studded leather and bronze stand as a reminder of the listed building’s former use as a Victorian tea and coffee warehouse. The show apartment also boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, SMEG appliances and English Oak timber flooring. On top of the five-storey building, a landscaped communal rooftop area with seating provides excellent views of the Thames, and Wapping Station is conveniently located a short distance from the development. from £1,300,000 for a two-bedroom apartment
