ere at Canary Wharf magazine, we’re celebrating the start of summer. It’s the time of year where lunch breaks can be enjoyed drinking iced coffees in the sun and colleagues start disappearing and returning back into the office with anecdotes of far-flung destinations and envy-inducing suntans. One man who is no stranger to international travel is our cover star and Formula One supremo Nico Rosberg. On page 18, the race car driver sits down with us to reflect on balancing family life with his jet-setting career – and sheds some light on the essentials that he won’t travel without. Rosberg’s boyish good looks, casual charm and phenomenal skills on the racetrack have set him in the sights of a legion of brands, including TUMI and HUGO BOSS and Mercedes-Benz, who have chosen the driver to front a new campaign – alongside Formula One team-mate Lewis Hamilton. Read the full story on page 42, and get some serious style inspiration for the upcoming months. If you’ve got your style sorted but are looking for a refresh in the beauty department, turn to page 50, where we meet blow LTD’s co-founder Fiona McIntosh in her south-west London townhouse to talk blow-dries, interiors and the challenges of setting up a business in the digital age. From page 76 onwards, we’re indulging both your need for speed and your thirst for exotic travel, with a review of Marrakech’s Mandarin Oriental and an account of the world’s most exclusive motoring event: the chance to drive an Aston Martin on ice in Colorado. Finally, don’t miss the opportunity to win an Oscar de la Renta jewellery set with Cadenzza on page 32 – it’ll complete your look better than any tan could.

Formula One race car driver Nico Rosberg talks fatherhood, travel essentials, farflung destinations on his bucket list, and why being a TUMI Global Citizen is a perfect fit for his jet-set lifestyle

R

WORDS: CHARLOTTE PHILLIPS

ace car driving is a notoriously glamorous sport. It requires tremendous sums of money, the ability to travel frequently, and of course, spectators and admirers in the almost ubiquitous form of attractive women. Along with an elite boys’-club cohort of buddies, Formula One race car driver Nico Rosberg is famed for zipping around racecourses in snazzy, barely-there cars, representing Mercedes and winning multiple Grand Prix – all while looking immaculate and polished. But the reality of Rosberg’s life at home in Monaco – or at the family’s holiday retreat in Ibiza – is far simpler. “I get up early and take my dog Bailey out, then go to the office for an hour or two where I have some communication with the engineers and do some personal work. After that I go back home, have lunch with my wife Vivian and my dog Bailey at the beach,” Rosberg says. Last year, Rosberg became a father to daughter

Alaïa, a further incentive to luxuriate in the good life at home. “Obviously that was a very special thing. It makes me very happy and means I enjoy my time at home even more.”

“Sleeping in my own environment in my apartment – nothing beats that” Rosberg is by nature a homebody: his favourite race destination is Monaco. “It means I am sleeping in my own environment in my apartment and nothing beats that.” And when Rosberg is at home, he uses his downtime well. “I like to play sports and get involved in any sort of competitive activity. And I love reading, particularly biographies. Right now I am reading a book about the company Pixar; it is such a successful business and has really revolutionised its field – it’s incredibly interesting.”

CANARY WHARF | 19

But thanks to his job, Rosberg’s life involves little downtime at home, and spending time on terra firma isn’t always an option. “We are travelling all the time with Formula One,” he says. “It is just a relentless timetable.” Rosberg trawls the race circuits in far-flung parts of the world for months on end. Clearly, this is a man who knows the inside of a plane well; albeit possibly the first-class section. As such, his latest role as a Global Citizen for luxury luggage brand TUMI – along with South Korean actress Claudia (Soo Hyun) Kim – couldn’t be more apt, and his enthusiasm for the products is undeniably genuine. “The hard suitcases are awesome, because everything stays in place. The bags never break – they are really robust.” Rosberg has come so far as to develop a theoretical packing style, but sadly, the reality of successful packing often eludes him. “It’s all about organisation and preparing everything in advance. What I want to do – which I never manage at the moment – is to make a proper list at home, so that every time I travel I just need to look at the list and know what I need to pack. I never do it in advance – it is always last minute, so I have to work on that as well. That’s why I am always two minutes too late!” But you can tell he’s used to being on the move: he has all the essentials worked out, meaning he could be on the road in moments if need be. “My BlackBerry, my toothbrush, my passport, my IWC watch and my wallet of course. Also on planes it is always super useful to have my Bose headphones so I can listen to some music. Oh, and lastly my sunglasses!” Presumably, this is all carried in what Rosberg calls his “man-bag”, which, for those males aspiring to carry the basics in similar style (though be warned: Rosberg’s charm and boynext-door good looks mean he can pull off accessories other men may struggle with) is “an AlphaBravo Everett Tote.”

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

Clearly, he’s got the gear, the reasons and the means to travel, but being a TUMI Global Citizen is about more than that. Essentially, to be a global citizen is to be nomadic; to travel with ease and enjoy exploring and interacting with the world around us. “I am at home in Germany and Monaco, in my Motorhome, and wherever I travel for all the European races,” Rosberg remarks. “That is what it means to be a TUMI Global Citizen to me. I love having the opportunity to communicate with different people and experience new cultures.”

feature

however it is all part of being able to do my dream job – so I wouldn’t change it. “Obviously I miss my wife, my dog and my family. I also miss the general things about being home; things like my own bed, my couch and all those other home comforts.” Own beds aside, the list of places Rosberg still wants to visit is significant. “I would really like to do some adventure travelling. The Galapagos Islands, the Caribbean… all those places. A safari in South Africa would be great, then afterwards it would be cool to go and stay in Cape Town for a while. Of course I would want to go with my wife Vivian.” Imagining the two of them stepping off a 12hour flight looking flawless prompts a realisation. The curious celebrity ability to disembark a plane looking rested and stylish, rather than sporting the bedraggled, dishevelled look so common among us mere mortals all boils down to one crucial detail: the ideal luggage. It makes all the difference, apparently.

“I’d like to do some adventure travelling: the Galapagos Islands, the Caribbean...” He continues, “It really opens your eyes and is good for your personal development.” And does he play favourites? “For me, the best places have got to be London and New York. There’s just so much to see and so many cool things to do in those places – it’s wonderful.” But it seems that for Rosberg, home is very much where the heart is. “Sometimes it can be frustrating being away so much of the time,

“The TUMI carry-on bags are so well optimised for travelling, with extra pockets for your computer and everything you need. It makes the whole experience a lot easier.” Rosberg leaves us with a final piece of travel advice. “Be well prepared for it and be organised... even if I need to work on that a little bit myself!” TUMI, Cabot Place; uk.tumi.com

o illustrate the exotic allure of Capri, there is no one more suited to the task than the sultry Salma Hayek. The actress has returned as the face of Pomellato’s S/S16 campaign, shot by renowned photography duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (of Mert & Marcus) in London. First launched in 2011, the bold pieces continue to live up to their namesake. Each one perfectly captures the Italian island’s colourful

environment; precious earrings, necklaces and rings in turquoise and coral have been interspersed with ceramic beading and precious stones, including blue sapphires, rubies, amethysts, and tsavorites. This marks the first time Pomellato has incorporated ceramic into the Capri range and the innovative material has helped to reinvent this popular collection. Bird Song Mexican jeweller Daniela Villegas delved into Salvatore Ferragamo’s vast archive and unearthed the Italian fashion house’s vintage silk scarves featuring colourful wildlife, along with the Ars shoe designed by the founder in the 1950s, as inspiration for her new capsule jewellery collection. The menagerie-themed line sees parrots, parakeets and other birds of paradise brought to life in necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets crafted in sterling silver and showcasing green topaz and purple amethyst. The birdcage has become a Ferragamo hallmark and is therefore a recurring motif in Villegas’ collection, available now. from £165, ferragamo.com

ONE TO WATCH This month Sandy Madhvani, showroom manager at David M Robinson in Canary Wharf, selects his watch of the moment:

As the original horologic speedster (the company was Ferrari’s Formula One partner during the1970s), it was fitting that TAG Heuer became the official timekeeper to the Virgin Money London Marathon in the year that Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge set a new course record. Two days later, it was announced that the Swiss manufacturer was to become the timing partner to the Premier League, too. The brand will be supplying referees with tailored versions of its Connected smart-watch, and fourth officials with timing boards shaped like Carrera timepieces. This month, TAG’s LVMH-owned stablemate, Hublot, will keep time at the 2016 European Championships. A master of savvy sports marketing, LVMH watch chief, Jean-Claude Biver, has now cornered both Europe’s biggest sporting tournament and the most mass-marketed league on the planet – clearly he’s a man with his eye on the ball. With the Swiss watch industry under pressure, watch brands big and small are striving to offer the best value possible. Chris Hall reports on the most compelling launches of Baselworld 2016

Time is money

T

oo often as a watch writer, you find yourself hearing – or repeating – the mantra of the uncurious: ‘a watch is worth whatever somebody will pay for it’. It’s a callous maxim that is as insulting to wealthy buyers as it is to craftsmen. As a statement, it is pure horological snobbery, usually deployed to snipe at watches whose price tags seem to be hovering several thousand feet above reality, as well as the buyers happy to uncritically part with large amounts of cash. Yet it conceals an awkward truth – there is very little discussion about value in the modern watch market. It’s an immensely thorny issue – many will simply say watches are a ‘passion product’, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that you can’t put a price on happiness. Maybe that’s true; I’m not so sure. One thing is for certain: at Baselworld 2016, we saw a lot of watches whose most arresting attribute was their price. It’s undeniable that brands are having to chase sales harder than in recent years, and that’s being reflected across the board. Some have cottoned on quicker than others, which makes for interesting times. I’m not just talking about ‘cheap’ watches – whatever that may mean. This is about value, and no matter how hard that

is to define, it exists at every level of the market. Take, for example, Jaquet Droz; one of the highest-regarded producers of Métiers d’Art watches, mechanical automata and elegant dress watches. This year, it released stainless steel versions of its Grande Seconde range for the first time, with prices starting at £9,400, and rising to £17,900 for a very handsome dual time reference. It wasn’t the only high-end brand leaving precious metals to one side; Girard-Perregaux has taken the bold step of releasing the entire 1966 collection (its most mainstream range) in steel. This has brought the brand – which still sells six-figure tourbillons and minute repeaters – into the £5,00010,000 range for the first time, and it’s a seriously tantalising prospect for watch lovers. We’re talking stylish dual time or triple calendar watches with in-house movements for around £6,0007,000, and a shade over £5,000 for the standard automatic. Overall, prices have been reduced by approximately 17 per cent across the entire range. Elsewhere, Moritz Grossmann, Chopard L.U.C and Blancpain were all making similar moves. It’s not just about swapping steel for gold. Watchmakers are exercising all their cunning to bring out advanced, complicated watches at hitherto unseen prices. A couple of years ago, the watch world was stunned when Montblanc released a perpetual calendar – the Heritage

This year in Basel, Frederique Constant showed us its Manufacture Perpetual Calendar – with a price tag of £7,480 in steel or rose gold plate. That is frankly astonishing when you consider that it’s produced entirely in-house (Montblanc uses a bought-in movement with another, separately sourced, perpetual calendar module on top). It’s also better looking than the Montblanc. It goes on. From meeting to meeting, we were confronted with watches that, in some cases, made us think a zero had been missed off the end of the figure. First prize in this category must go to recently revived alternative brand Angelus. Last year, it announced its return to watchmaking after a 40-year absence with the slightly odd U10 Tourbillon. This year, it wowed us with three new, highly-advanced pieces. All are seriously avantgarde watches cooked up by some incredibly talented chaps, but the U30 stands out in particular. It’s a flyback, split-seconds chronograph with a tourbillon, with a finely skeletonised movement and carbon-fibre case – yours for around £18,750. This is Ferrari watchmaking at Ford prices (even if you could buy an actual Ford for the same amount). Scarcely a handful of watchmakers can pull this off, and very few at Baselworld were taking the risk to invest in new movements, let alone ones as complex as this. Back with the powerhouse brands, only one man could cause a stir two years running with exactly the same watch. TAG Heuer’s CEO Jean-Claude Biver managed it by finally ‘releasing’ the Carrera Heuer Calibre 02 Tourbillon, which we first saw in 2015. Tourbillons – love them or loathe them – are pretty much the definition of prestige watchmaking. You don’t need one on your watch, but they are so hard to make (properly, anyway – Chinese factories bang them out for pennies) that they always command a high fee. Not any more. TAG Heuer’s Swiss-made tourbillon comes in at £12,000 – hardly small change, but a figure so unprecedented that Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern recently accused Biver of devaluing the very concept of Swiss watchmaking. How did he do it? In a move that may yet reverberate around the industry, Biver candidly admitted that he slashed the usual profit margin on such a watch. So what does this all mean for the high street watch shopper? Pleasingly, there is good news

Frederique Constant

here as well. It can be the hardest area in which to define true value because most mainstream customers know – or care – less about the innards of their watches than us watch-obsessed geeks. But when a brand such as Tudor introduces its first inhouse movement and barely changes the watches’ prices (as it did last year), you know you’re on to a good thing. It was more of the same this year, with the Heritage Black Bay Black, as well as a 36mm Black Bay, now incorporating an in-house movement. Design is also coming to the forefront in the value battleground – genuinely good-looking watches for less than £2,000 are usually scarce, but this year the likes of Oris, Junghans and reviveddive-brand Zodiac all released cool watches that, while they owe a distinct debt to Tudor’s Heritage Black Bay, stand in their own right as great entrylevel options.

“Only one man could cause a stir two years running with exactly the same watch” We went to Baselworld knowing that it was likely to be a tricky year. The focus on realistic prices is a cautionary sign of the times, but could prove a boon to buyers – free-market economists would say that things are heading towards some sort of ‘equilibrium’. It is also telling that in the weeks after Baselworld, news started to circulate of a company called Goldgena (yes, terrible name), promising to ‘blow wide open’ the ‘truth’ behind Swiss watchmaking’s dirty tricks, exposing the fat profit margins and – not so altruistic, this bit – start marketing a range of Goldgena watches that claims to offer true value to the customer. At the time of writing, this amounted to little more than some naff ‘viral’ marketing videos and a good deal of hot air, but the key point being made here is one the industry might do well to heed; there is a perceived demand for openness. A watch is worth whatever somebody will pay for it – until, of course, they won’t.

ashion followers looking for the new ‘it’ bag need look no further. For this month marks the launch of the Maple by Mulberry, an elegant design that is the ultimate in functional fashion. The refined shopping tote has two sets of handles and the pockets on the front can be easily detached to be used as a purse – plus the bag’s ample size allows room for everything a modern woman needs, including an iPad, laptop and your copy of Canary Wharf magazine.

The bag forms part of the debut collection for Mulberry by new creative director Johnny Coca – a man tasked with reviving the fortunes of the flailing British brand after a tumultuous few years. Coca said of the new design: “The Maple’s beauty is in its structure – the simplicity of the form and the careful addition of details. It isn’t gimmicky, it is just a well-made tote that can be easily accessed and carry all the things you need day to day.” from £795, Mulberry, mulberry.com

When BOSS met BENZ Style and sport seamlessly merge with the latest Formula One-inspired BOSS for MercedesBenz Capsule Collection for S/S16. With a campaign featuring Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, it promises to be both functional and fashionable WORDS: charlotte phillips

H

UGO BOSS and the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team have a few things in common. One may be an international fashion powerhouse and the other a glamorous and exclusive sport, but they’re both luxurious, elegant and the pinnacle of success within their respective industries. HUGO BOSS and Mercedes-Benz also both originally hail from the south of Germany and are focused on outstanding workmanship and excellent quality. With such common interests, a partnership made sense and one was forged in January 2015. “Mercedes AMG Petronas and HUGO BOSS are a perfect fit in terms of their brand values, and both can look back on long success stories,” says Gerd von Podewils, senior vice president of global communication at HUGO BOSS. “We are pleased to join forces with such a strong partner and look forward to the synergies our partnership will generate down the road.” HUGO BOSS designs the high-performance clothing worn by the entire Mercedes-Benz Formula One crew at the circuits and team headquarters, including the drivers. The 2014 and 2015 World Champions wear BOSS at official functions and also when travelling to and from the various Formula One racetracks.

“Everyone in the team is excited about being ‘kitted out’ by BOSS,” says head of MercedesBenz motorsport Toto Wolff. “As a team, we are pleased to cooperate with another brand of this stature to add to our already extensive and impressive suite of partners.” But it’s not just the race car drivers and industry bigwigs who can benefit. To bring the collaboration to the market, there is a Formula One-inspired BOSS for Mercedes-Benz Collection, a capsule menswear collection presented twice a year for customers. The S/S16 collection is understated: think monochrome tones, utility design details and luxury performance-wear fabrics. It’s a modern capsule collection, designed with functionality in mind as much as style. Sportswear elements are apparent throughout and seamlessly merged with high-end fashion detailing. The S/S16 BOSS for Mercedes-Benz collection is modelled by Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One drivers Lewis Hamilton, a Brit and three-time Formula One World Champion, and Nico Rosberg, a German driver who finished runner-up in 2014 and 2015. Both men are stylish, successful and a perfect embodiment of a luxurious, aspirational lifestyle. Campaign shots of the duo feature the pair wearing black-on-black – check out Rosberg’s buttery-soft leather jacket – complete with the requisite sunglasses. Shot by fashion photography duo Hunter & Gatti, the campaign is inspired by the racetrack and demonstrates the sleek

tailoring and clean lines so typical of BOSS design. Standout pieces include the Gair cotton sweater – in an uplifting bright blue – and the Nartino leather jacket, the perfect multipurpose addition to any man’s wardrobe. At Home With…

FIONA MCINTOSH

Between its beauty bars and at-home services, blow LTD’s army of stylists has your blow-dry and grooming emergencies covered. We sit down with co-founder Fiona McIntosh WORDS: MELISSA EMERSON PHOTOGRAPHER: ROB CADMAN

F

ormer fashon editor Fiona McIntosh embarked on a whole new challenge when she set up blow LTD with venture capitalist and entrepreneur Dharmash Mistry in 2013. Aiming to simplify the process of getting a blow-dry, its Canary Wharf salon now also offers make-up and lashes application, facials, manicures and pedicures. All are easy to book online and most importantly, speedy. A blow-dry takes a maximum of 30 minutes and you can have a mani in 15 – you could even see it as a working lunch break and utilise the iPads provided. We sit down with McIntosh at her south-west London townhouse.

CANARY WHARF | 51

As we tuck into pastries, we chat about blow LTD, the joys of fashion and hectic lifestyles.

ON The IDEA… “I always loved the way New York blow-dry bars were so ruthlessly efficient – no faff, no extraneous chit-chat, just in and out with amazing hair in 30 minutes. We wanted to recreate that experience with bells on – by adding make-up and nails. It started with two fast beauty bars in Covent Garden and Canary Wharf and now, to make the experience even faster, our stylists can come to your home or office.”

ON working in fashion… “I have been editor-in-chief of ELLE, ES Magazine and was the launch editor-in-chief of Grazia. Many of the skills I learned in editing were transferable, from setting the tone of voice to creating the menu of looks, shoots, blog posts, ‘How To’ videos and newsletters. But there’s been a ton of other stuff I’ve had to learn totally from scratch. Rather than a learning curve it’s been a vertical learning line.”

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

ON how publishing has changed… “The disruption in media over the past few years has been wider and faster than anyone could have predicted. In some ways it has been sad to see much-loved print titles disappear, but hugely exciting to see the emergence of incredible new media models. Everyone still wants great, engaging content – how it is delivered and monetised is the new challenge.”

ON digital culture… “It’s incredible how quickly the on-demand culture is taking hold of London. All the services we need to make life easier, from food delivery to laundry to dog walking, can be booked through an app. We spent a lot of time developing the blow LTD app to make booking beauty to your door as easy as ordering a taxi, but it was even more important to us that the quality of the service we deliver is outstanding – we test, vet and CRB check every stylist and make-up artist so only the best professionals are on our platform.”

beauty

ON that fast-running clock… [We notice that McIntosh’s kitchen clock runs 15 minutes fast.] “Ha! It just doesn’t work properly and (ironically) no one has the time to change it, but it’s always a pleasant surprise to realise I have an extra 15 minutes every day. Mornings are manic however – shovelling down some muesli, bundling kids off to school and legging it to the Tube. Much the same as every other working London mum.”

ON what luxury means… “Travel. I could go without a new season handbag, but I could never go without a holiday – preferably to somewhere new and exciting. My ideal escape would have to be heli-skiing in Japan – but I’d have to be 100 times fitter than I am now.”

ON interiors inspiration… “Our home is a mix of pieces my husband Fergus and I have acquired, inherited and commissioned. We love a bit of a mid-century mash-up.”

ON fashion pieces…

ON time to get ready… “Every woman I know is pressed for time. But there’s even more pressure to look professional and groomed 24/7. It was important to us that we offered beauty services when and where we really need them – from 7am (before that morning meeting) to 8pm (before that party) – at your home, hotel, office or event. The male grooming market is also growing and seems to be hugely popular. Quite a few well-groomed gentlemen about town book our mani and pedi service to their homes now.”

“My current favourites are my beige and green Anya Hindmarch bag, my Yves Salomon furlined army jacket – which is the warmest thing ever – and my Sophia Webster ankle boots. The heel is so tall and thin I’d rather gaze at them than wear them.”

ON words of advice… “Stop faffing around and just get on with it! And beauty advice to my younger self – wear more sunscreen, you idiot.” blow LTD, Jubilee Place, blowltd.com; download the blow LTD app from the App Store or Google Play store

ON what’s happening right now at blow ltd… “We are very excited about the launch of our new semi-permanent lashes service to your home, which really does give you amazing Hollywood lashes, and also our own #10minuteblow styling collection. We created it with incredibly clever lab technicians to deliver the perfect fast and fabulous blow-dry at home.”

Well-scrubbed and moisturised skin aside, be sure to pick a scent with a story to enliven balmy summer nights words: melissa emerson

Brush smart

Charcoal is a buzzword in health this year, and for good reason. Unlike other toothpastes, which contain abrasive particles and bleaching agents that erode enamel, charcoal toothpaste uses carbon to absorb and remove stain particles that discolour teeth without wearing the enamel away, for naturally whiter teeth. The product also contains hydroxyapatite, a mineral form of calcium, which effectively fills in exposed holes in the tooth’s surface to protect from wear and tear and remineralise the enamel. Face Time

EF MEDISPA offers a range of non-surgical facial treatments – safe and highly effective ways to tackle such a delicate area of the skin without needing to resort to surgery – meaning less risk, less pain and no downtime. With a wide range of options to choose from, from facials and peels to injectables and technologically advanced laser treatments, a free professional consultation will help you establish how to target specific problems and how the treatments are likely to give you the best outcome.

Dermal Fillers This treatment can be taken alone or combined with antiwrinkle injections and targets the forehead, cheeks and lips best. A gel injection made from hyaluronic acid (naturally found in skin tissue) plumps out visible lines on the surface and lifts cheeks. Meanwhile internally, it binds itself with collagen to allow nutrients to flow more easily through the bloodstream to nourish skin cells. It takes between 30 and 45 minutes to complete the procedure and results can last from nine to 18 months. from £300

Anti-Wrinkle Injectables Anti-wrinkle injectables are a well-established treatment to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. By blocking the signals from the nerves to the facial muscles, the muscles stop contracting and creating new lines, while existing lines are softened for an overall smoother complexion. The treatment time is up to 30 minutes and is administered by a medical professional who can best assess where to target and how deep to penetrate; frown lines are frequently targeted successfully. A follow-up appointment after two weeks – when the treatment should have fully taken effect – is to ensure you are happy with the results, which can then last from three to five months. from £250 per area

High-Frequency MesoTherapy The micro-needling of highfrequency mesotherapy requires a little more commitment, with an average of six 30-minute treatments recommended. Once skin has been carefully sterilised, a handheld device fitted with a micro-needle delivers a direct boost of nourishing vitamins and minerals to the layer just beneath the epidermis. As well as giving skin more radiance, the small, temporary shock to the skin from the needle also stimulates microcirculation and collagen regeneration – something that helps skin appear younger and firmer. The therapist will also fully rehydrate your skin afterwards and apply SPF protection. from £250

CPRESS your way to

organic We talk cold-pressed juices, the benefits of switching to organic and industry secrets with CPRESS nutritionist Miriam Gubovic

T

he idea of an organic diet has been debated aplenty over the years. While some argue that the change is unnecessary, CPRESS nutritionist Miriam Gubovic insists that the lifestyle will work wonders for your health. CPRESS, in Crossrail Walk, is an organic food and juice bar. Its shelves are stacked with flavourful juice and smoothie options packed with vital nutrients alongside meals and snacks, all of which are 100 per cent organic, certified by the Soil Association. CPRESS cold-press methods extract superior amounts of nutrients from the fruit, vegetables and roots, leaving very little behind. “Organic refers to the entire process: picking the right seed, the way the crop is treated, harvested and used in the kitchen before it reaches your shopping basket.” Gubovic explains. “But just because it’s labelled organic, it doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Organic breakfast cereal, for example, contains hazardous levels of sugars. Always read the labels; if you don’t understand it, your body won’t either.” While non-organic produce contains high levels of pesticides and chemicals that your body finds difficult to process, organic produce is alive, nutrient-rich and only supplies our body with the good stuff. “Our mission at CPRESS is to promote

health and vitality through unprocessed and pesticide-free products. A clean engine running on clean fuel will get better gas mileage and break down less. This metaphor applies to the human body. If you’re eating clean, you’re going to run better,” Gubovic tells us. “People lead hectic lives and we provide options that support the body to function well. Our Canary Wharf customers want highquality products, quickly. You can be sure that any product you pick off the shelves is the highest quality and healthy.” With the summer fast approaching, CPRESS has created a detoxing programme, which eases you through the process step by step. “Be gentle to yourself.” Gubovic advises. “Detox is your time to repair and restore. Our series provides an easy entry point even for the first timers and follows with gradual juice cleanses.” CPRESS also hosts Crunch & Brunch events, coming to Canary Wharf this month, where you can enjoy a workout with a professional trainer, followed by a CPRESS juice and a nutrition talk with Gubovic. Q & A... with Wheyhey L aunched in 2013, Wheyhey is a healthy alternative to traditional ice cream: high protein, low fat, low calorie and sugar-free. We sit down with the founders Greg Duggan and Damien Kennedy.

Q: Where did the idea come from? A: We were refused entry to our local Odeon because we had our Tupperware boxes full of chicken and broccoli. We saw a queue for sugary products and there we had our brainwave. A secondhand ice-cream machine from eBay later and the rest is history…

Q: Why is there a need for Wheyhey products? A: More people than ever are conscious about what they consume and are switching to healthier alternatives. Frozen yoghurt has long been considered the fat-free healthy option; however, it’s not the case as it contains high levels of sugar, unhealthy sweeteners and low levels of protein. Q: Who is Wheyhey ice cream geared towards? A: Our initial audience was within the health and fitness world because

of their awareness of the benefits of protein. But as the stigma of protein as masculine and aggressive has massively decreased, we are gearing Wheyhey more towards a wider audience of those who want to live a healthy, active lifestyle; people who want to indulge from time to time, but with none of the guilt. RESTAURANT REVIEW

A Slice of Spain With simple flavours expertly combined, Ibérica Canary Wharf makes tapas look easy, as Melissa Emerson discovers

S

pain might have seen a boost in visitor numbers this year, but if it’s the country’s high-class wines you’re after, then there’s no need to leave Canary Wharf, where Ibérica stocks a number of authentic Spanish bottles not readily available outside the summer hotspot. So stay put, and prepare for an evening of fine wine and platters of gourmet goodies on home ground. Most of the restaurant’s food produce, down to the simple extra virgin olive oil bread sticks, is also sourced in Spain, and the dedication to the country is reflected, without a stereotype in sight, in the clean, cool décor by Barcelona-based designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán. Exposed brick walls and framed retro-looking Spanish posters meet steel surfaces and oversized lights for a polished industrial look. And if you need some sun to go with that Spanish wine, its two Ibérica La Terraza terraces are also open in Canary Wharf this summer. Back inside the main restaurant, directed by Michelin-starred executive chef Nacho Manzano and overseen by group head chef César Garcia, we expect high standards, yet ingredients are deceptively simple. Who knew toasted

bread with tomatoes and olive oil could be so sweet-scented and moreish, while of course at the heart of the menu is the famous Ibérico ham. Jumping in at the deep end, we followed up our tomato bread with a hearty Trio platter and – all worries of a heart attack aside – two further rustic wooden boards of marbled air-cured beef and Presa, a tender shoulder cut from posher pigs on an acorn diet. It’s seriously worth comparing a few like this, as longer-aged varieties have a more intense flavour and a touch more salt to the taste. Moving on to vegetables to lighten things up, albeit battered ones, we nibbled crispy cauliflower tempura and a comforting asparagus toast topped with manchego, onion confit and truffle oil (it’s safe to say I’ll be using that combination in my toastie maker from now on).

Unable to stay away, we moved back to the grilled Ibérico pork head of loin, accompanied by a hearty smoky sauce, and a side of Ibérica’s signature serrano ham croquettes. The croquettes’ molten cheese was indulgent to say the least, while the pork was so soft our waiter felt the need to assure us it

“The croquettes’ molten cheese was indulgent to say the least” was cooked. As a tapas-based menu where most of the food was shared, we reasoned – with entirely sound logic – that we could have twice as much, so we opted to finish with the Gloria cheesecake. Served with parmesan and dried strawberries, it struck the perfect balance between sweet and savoury. Thanks to its sociable, sharing vibe, the restaurant was almost full on the Tuesday evening we visited. We were sad to leave, until we found the delicatessen on the way out, where you can pick up hand-carved Jamón Ibérico to go. While contemplating how soon we could come back, we also learned about its one-off exclusive guest chef dinners and tasting events, as well as free weekend Olé Kids Spanish workshops. Kids up to the age of ten have teacher supervision while creating art and learning about Spain’s culture and language. It seems Ibérica Canary Wharf really does have it all, and I will too when I have made my way through everything on its menu. Ibérica Canary Wharf, Cabot Square

ESCAPE the CITY Every Londoner knows that nothing beats a day in the countryside: a drive, a slap-up pub lunch, a hearty walk and dose of fresh air before heading back to the Big Smoke. Midsummer House

If pretty academic towns are your thing – not to mention refined, delicious food – it doesn’t get any better than Midsummer House, a restaurant housed in a Victorian villa on Midsummer Common in the city of Cambridge. The setting is as idyllic as you’d imagine with a name like that, with cows grazing, the river gently flowing and apple trees – of both Bramley and Blenheim Orange varieties, the source of the restaurant’s signature scallop, truffle and apple dish – looking delightfully rustic in the breeze. With a team of 20 headed up by the renowned Daniel Clifford, the Michelinstarred Midsummer House focuses on seasonal produce, local, artisan suppliers and carefully curated set menus, for flavours that complement one another perfectly. The five-course tasting menu is a treat, beautifully presented and portioned so as to not be overwhelming. The roasted pigeon is a particular highlight, but the cheese trolley is not to be missed. If you’re celebrating, or just feeling indulgent, go for the full eight-course tasting menu, featuring additions such as sautéed duck liver with a gingerbread, pear and chicory salad and braised brill, cuttlefish, clams and sea herbs. Go hungry, roll away happy. Notably for a restaurant with such formidable food credentials, Midsummer House isn’t stuffy. Service is relaxed and the open-plan layout welcoming. If the weather’s nice, do enjoy the surroundings: bask in the sun along the riverside, take a proper country walk through the common, or perhaps go for a wander around the restaurant’s walled herb garden. For a more urban but no less delightful afternoon, you could also take a look at some of the ancient colleges dotted around Cambridge, or pop into the quaint local shops. The Astor Grill

Miller of Mansfield

As a seasoned Londoner who thinks Regent’s Park is rural, I want my annual foray into the English countryside to be chocolate-box pretty, complete with honeysuckle-covered houses, home-grown food and friendly locals. Goring-on-Thames, just 90-minutes away from London, is the answer. It is charming, glorious countryside, with undulating fields showcasing England at its picturesque best. Before exploring, we opt for lunch at the Miller of Mansfield, an 18th-century coaching inn on the High Street. We sit in the pretty garden, basking in warm May sunshine, being plied with copious amounts of food. I think I can happily exist entirely on the warm home-made walnut bread (smothered with rich home-churned butter) until the day I die, but that’s before trying the creamy whipped cheese, which we convince ourselves is healthy by virtue of being produced locally – a case of food coma-induced wishful thinking. And forget your typical pub fare of fish and chips with mushy peas: our fish comes in the form of miniature crispy cod cakes, which we dip into a fresh, herby mayonnaise, along with a flavoursome mackerel pâté and a perfectly flaky oak-smoked cod. As ever, dessert is the real highlight. Not content with ordering one, or even two, we plump (the operative word indeed) for three; notably a sticky pistachio eggy bread and what may be the world’s greatest chocolate mousse. In a futile attempt to walk off four days’ worth of calories, we stroll along the grassy banks of the Thames, passing a weir, several barges, and families with dogs and children. It’s idyllic. We depart feeling incredibly full and somewhat envious of the outdoorsy, relaxed life country folk enjoy. But having discovered the Miller of Mansfield, we know we’ll be back in Goring-onThames before long. Miller of Mansfield, Goring-on-Thames, millerofmansfield.com

For 300 years, Cliveden House has encountered power, politics and parties. Home to the Astor family from the early 1900s, today it’s a stunning five-star luxury hotel, less than 45-minutes west of London. On an overcast but not entirely miserable Saturday in May, my friends and I made the short journey into the beautiful Berkshire countryside, to dine at Cliveden’s new restaurant, The Astor Grill. Adjacent to the main house, The Astor Grill is a cosy 38-cover restaurant, in the Duke of Westminster’s former stable block. Aptly adorned with equestrian-themed décor, it takes an informal approach to dining, with executive chef André Garrett offering a mixture of classic American and British dishes, reminiscent of Cliveden’s diverse owners and residents. For such a grandiose setting, there was zero pretension, starting with the delightful mini venison sausage rolls and home-made brown sauce offered as a snack. For my first course, I ordered the creamy Campania burrata, a ‘small plate’ served with sweet tomatoes, balsamic and fennel pollen. Simply delicious, however trumped by the shrimp and scallop burger that followed. An adventurous choice for me, I’m pleased to report there was nothing fishy about the tasty seafood pâté, which had clearly been made using the same quality seafood you’ll find elsewhere on the menu. Though we thought we would struggle to share one dessert, to our disgust, we finished two, a perfectly risen raspberry jam soufflé, and the baked strawberry and PX cheesecake; a tasty pairing, and the perfect note to end on. watching it develop year upon year made it an obvious choice for Evans when it came to opening his seventh branch of Sports Bar & Grill, which has now become the most impressive in its portfolio and the branch Evans considers his flagship. “I just love the space and the electric atmosphere. Canary Wharf has everything you could possibly need and I’m very proud to be part of that,” he explained. With high speed wifi and plug sockets at every seating bench, its modern-luxe interior and large menu, it’s no wonder people are in at half seven for breakfast or popping

in for dinner and drinks to unwind after work. Sports Bar & Grill prides itself on being able to show everything on the sporting calendar, programming its 4K screens to show multiple sports at different times with the corresponding commentary. The designated sound zones mean everyone can watch what they want without it being drowned out by their neighbours. With so much on offer, there is no doubt the tables will be filling up quick. Aston Martin

On Ice

Take one of the world’s top luxury cars, add ice and snow, and you have a car-driving experience so exclusive, most Aston Martin buyers don’t even know about it WORDS: Abigail Butcher

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

TRAVEL

I

pull my sunglasses down over my eyes, grip the leather steering wheel, wait for the signal and then floor the accelerator. The engine roars into life, tyres throwing up clods of snow as the car picks up speed. I go as fast as I dare before the corner – only around 50mph, but it feels faster because I’m on an ice track – before braking gently at the approach. I hope I’ve braked at just the right time and try to remember not to over-steer as I corner through a channel of road cones, bright orange against the dazzling white of the snow, past the watchful eye of lead instructor Paul Gerrard. “Do as much steering with your foot as with your hands Abi,” crackles the feedback through a walkie talkie in the pocket of the car – a beautiful Aston Martin Vantage V8 convertible that I have, quite utterly, fallen in love with. It’s frustrating: I’m a perfectionist and despite about 40 laps of the skidpan prior to the cornering drills, I still haven’t conquered the over-steer.

I take a deep breath and ease off the accelerator, savouring the beauty of the Aston and the mountains soaring in the distance as I drive round the remainder of the mile-long circuit. I’m on an ice-driving circuit prepared exclusively by Aston Martin on a ranch beneath Crested Butte in a section of the Rockies called the West Elk Mountains in Colorado. We stayed in the cult ski town last night before embarking on our ‘Aston Martin On Ice’ experience, which is about as exclusive as you can get. Aston Martin Lagonda doesn’t advertise this programme, participants hear about it via word-of-mouth or while they’re buying a car. The lucky few fly to Colorado from all round the world, including India and Africa. “We have a very high conversion rate from sales – people who have bought an Aston Martin like to try it on snow,” says US PR and brand communications manager Matthew Clarke. The On Ice experience is available as a day or weekend-long break, and the previous night we’d

stayed in the exclusive Tipple House, the Colorado equivalent of a French super chalet, rebuilt lovingly around an old mining shed. The enormous superking bed in my equally sizeable basement room was so big that I felt like one of the Borrowers. “One of the reasons we run these experiences is to break the perception that rear-wheel drive cars are not good in winter conditions,” explains Gerrard, a former racing driver, clad – along with the rest of his team – in head-to-toe black. “In an Aston Martin, the engine is behind the axle line, so it’s front-mid, not front engine, which shifts the weight rearwards. What we’re setting out to prove to owners is that you don’t need to park the car during the winter.” Aston has its entire range here: the DB9, V8 Vantage, V12 Vantage, Rapide S and Vanquish; my visit was a month before the Geneva Motor Show launch of the DB11. The cars are equipped with winter tyres, designed to facilitate braking and accelerating in these conditions, but not studs.

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

We quickly learn that ice offers about one-tenth of the traction of a normal road. The first exercise is to go with an instructor into the purpose-built skidpan, and I unwittingly get into a Rapide S, which is easier to control on the ice thanks to its longer wheelbase. After about 20 minutes of practice, we hop into cars on our own. The rest of the day is spent driving alone, with only the walkie talkie for company. We’re talked through a course of orange cones set out as a slalom – how to arc smooth, tight turns using a combination of throttle, steering and braking. Braking isn’t hard either, it’s important to note. “Always look where you want to go,” says Gerrard. “If you look at the snow bank when you go round a corner, that’s where you’ll end up.” Typically, I either use too much or too little steering – which, if overdone, results with your car facing the wrong way. Strike the right balance and you can control the skid and use it to your

TRAVEL

advantage, steering through the turn without losing too much speed. Once we start to get the hang of it, we’re let loose on the entire circuit, and I feel like a Bond girl as I hop from car to car. My favourite very quickly materialises as the convertible V8 Vantage GT – just the right mix between power and handling. The DB9 is probably the sleekest to look at, but on the ice it’s a little heavy. “The better drivers steer less through a corner, they let the rear of the car steer a little, that way you lose less speed,” explains Gerrard, as he gets into the passenger seat beside me for our competitive lap at the end of the day. Each of my five fellow journalists take it in turns to tackle the slalom course, arc wide round a right-hand bend and then stop accurately in a stop box at the end of the course. My competitive juices flowing, I tear off from the start, snaking around the cones, fast into the corner and, sensing from Gerrard that my lap is quick, get carried away and lose the steering,

sliding sideways into the stop box, picking up a five-second penalty. I finish fifth of six, on a time of four minutes 47 seconds, but happy in the knowledge that, had I not finished sideways, I would have won. To finish it all, and to perhaps take participants down a peg or two, we each jump into a car with one of Aston’s professional racing drivers for a couple of laps of the circuit at full speed – 90mph, not 50mph, with a couple of donuts thrown in. That’s the way to do it. I left Crested Butte having promised I would seriously consider investing in the new DB11, asking whether I could wangle a ‘buy-one-get-onefree’ deal – perhaps they could throw in the GT? “Hmm, we’ll see,” replied Clarke, with a smirk. Until then, I’ll just have to content myself with looking at the pictures. Aston Martin On Ice starts from £1,250. For more information, visit astonmartin.com/en/events/on-ice

A Moroccan love affair A visit to Marrakech, with its hectic souks, buzzy restaurants and traditional sights, will always get the heart racing. Promising a respite from the chaos is the new Mandarin Oriental Marrakech, but Angelina Villa-Clarke finds it leaves her breathless

I

n front of me, a black cobra is swaying to the wail of the pungi, and the air is heavy with the aromas of spice and oud. Women, in cerise and scarlet djellabas, push their way through the crowds – the day’s purchases on their minds. Coming from within the medina there’s the tinny sound of what appears to be Arabic techno – fast-paced and frantic. People are calling out, shouting to friends and selling their wares. It’s a sensory overload, a heady experience: it’s Marrakech at its best.

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

The ancient, fortified medina is the heartbeat of Marrakech, which has long since attracted curious European travellers, who first made it a ‘must-seecity’ in the 1920s and then a fashionable hub in the 1960s. Its popularity hasn’t waned since. Circled by pink sandstone walls that stretch for 12 miles and which date back to the 12th century, the medina is an epic, exotic place. Inside there’s a series of artisan quarters (40,000 individual sellers to be precise), organised into different souks, plus a myriad of riads, restaurants, hammams

TRAVEL

and beautiful historical buildings. From the bash and clang of the Haddadine, the metalworker’s souk (head here for covetable ornate lanterns), to the overpowering sight and smell of the Rahba Kedima, the old spice market, you can pick up almost anything your heart desires. Traditional carpets, vibrant-hued slippers, and brightly painted ceramics… the souk is crammed with retail-therapy opportunities the like of which you’ll not find at home. Just be prepared to barter and negotiate the sometimes perilous winding, narrow lanes, watching out for the daredevil moped drivers and clomping donkeys and carts. By contrast, the wide, main square Djemaa el Fna, gives some breathing space. It comes into its own after dark, when food carts, local musicians and a variety of hawkers fill the area (monkeys walking on leads, vultures dyed blue and traditional water sellers dressed in elaborate scarlet costumes were just a few of the sights we witnessed.) The old city also has plenty of places that reveal an insight into its rich history and which give any visit a touch of gravitas. A must, for example, is the impressive 16th-century Medersa Ben Youssef (medersa-ben-youssef.com), a former Islamic college with standout Moorish architecture, while the Andalusian-Arabic Bahia Palace, with its 150 richly decorated rooms with gilded ceilings, is also well worth a pitstop. For a much-welcome antidote to the frenetic pace that is the medina, however, head to the new Mandarin Oriental Marrakech, a ten-minute drive

outside the city walls. Found within 20 acres of olive groves and lush grounds, it is an oasis of calm, a world away from the hubbub of the souk. With its pink-coloured walls, scented rose gardens and views of the Atlas Mountains, it is also impossibly romantic.

“It will be hard not to be wooed by the charms of the private villas” While you can choose one of the nine suites found in the main building, most boasting exceptional views over the estate, it will be hard not to be wooed by the charms of the private villas. Based on traditional riads, these are vast in size (some are 440sq m), each with its own private courtyard, complete with fig trees, swimming pool, hot tub and outside living area. French designers Patrick Gilles and Dorothée Boissier have given a pared-back Moroccan theme to the décor – streamlined yet über glamorous. An imposing, dark wooden door leads into your walled garden where pristine, white day beds, black timber screens and oversized lanterns give an architectural vibe to the outside courtyard. Inside is a series of rooms – living room, bedroom and bathroom – which have creamy-stone tadelakt plastered walls decorated with Berber motifs, thick hand-woven rugs and a round marble tub for a modern-day nod to traditional Moroccan interiors.

CANARY WHARF | 81

Public spaces, meanwhile, bring a similar sense of drama and make the most of the startling African daylight and the all-encompassing black of night. At sundown, covered walkways are lit by flickering lanterns and the air is thick with jasmine and cestrum, the sky overhead heavy with stars. By day it’s all angles created by fretwork, shade-giving almond and orange trees and the long, shimmering infinity pool. Dining at Mes’Lalla, the hotel’s signature restaurant, continues the interplay of old and new Morocco and chef Meryem Cherkaoui revs up local street-food recipes to new heights. Standout dishes include the squid cannelloni with smoked aubergine and sea bass with purple olive crust. End your meal with one of the organic teas, which use herbal infusions grown on the estate (the hotel has a vast kitchen garden from which many ingredients are sourced) and offers a grounding end to the gastronomic heights.

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

While the surroundings and cuisine will have got your heart racing, the spa will no doubt have you falling head over heels in love with this sublime retreat. Inspired by the cathedrals and mosques of Andalusia, this is a paean to the religion of pampering. Running either side of the central swimming pool are long corridors framed by arches and built from red brick – take note, whispering is essential. The spa lounge features cosy sofas, leather pouffes and a large fireplace, with a collection of rustic, terracotta vases, jugs and plates on its mantle, and looks out onto a decorative pool. It’s a treat just to sit here and read, snooze or ponder life. Each treatment room, meanwhile, has its own private garden, where you can choose to have your facial or massage under an olive tree, the scented breeze wafting over you. For something extra special, try the Hammam Discovery experience. This take on the traditional Moroccan activity

TRAVEL

“The hotel’s overall sense of space, contemporary design and striking aesthetics give an instant wow-factor” includes an all-over body cleanse with black soap, followed by exfoliation, hair washing and massage. Lastly, just as you are dozing off, a mineral-rich body wrap, infused with aromatic plants and rose water, is applied. It’s as zen as it gets. While the hotel’s overall sense of space, contemporary design and striking aesthetics give an instant wow-factor, it’s the attention to detail throughout that will impress. Each villa, for instance, has its own steam room and hammam complete with Nectarome products, sourced from nearby aromatherapy gardens. Every afternoon, the casual restaurant Le Salon Berbere is converted into a Moroccan tea-room

with delicious pastries and traditional teas on offer. Gardens are planted with undulating hills, grasses and trees to reflect the desert landscape of Morocco. Touches like these reflect a sense of locality, that is refreshing from such a big-name hotel brand, and which will undoubtedly keep savvy travellers returning for more. They had me at hello. Similar to luxury brands, certain items from Marks & Spencer have become cult favourites with significant waiting lists, such as last year’s suede ‘Alexa’ skirt. Its two co-founders Angus Thirwell and Peter Harris have each made over £20m, and money will go towards expansion and for staff and management. ubscription services are now a retail force to be reckoned with and aside from household names like Birchbox, Graze and Glossybox, delivery boxes themed from gardening and perfume to pets and crafts are feeding the consumer craze and contributing to a shift in shopping habits. Liz Cadman, founder of review and listings site My Subscription Addiction, is a self-confessed subscription addict – “my husband and I get anywhere from 75-100 boxes a month” – and has witnessed the growth of the industry first-hand. “In 2012 we had over 200 boxes listed in our directory. Today, we have over 2,000, and new boxes are submitted almost every day,” Cadman

adds. So what is it that has subscribers waiting so eagerly for their timely arrival? Many boxes simply aim to keep users in regular supply of basic essentials, such as GoodMouth, which regularly delivers users a new toothbrush, while others have a far bigger surprise or novelty element. “I think with our shift in shopping to online stores, we’re missing out on that discovery browsing part of the shopping experience, and subscription boxes bring that back in an exciting new way,” says Cadman. Plus, she says, “it’s like getting a gift every month.” From the moment of signing up or ordering, the excitement and anticipation begins, with some websites even posting spoiler threads, but aside from the thrill of receiving a gift when it’s neither

your birthday nor Christmas, the convenience factor is still a big draw. “Consumers are increasingly valuing anything that delivers a sense of curation and convenience that compensates for the hectic nature of modern life,” says Stefanie Dorfer, retail editor at Stylus. “This is particularly true for millennials. Brands have been focusing on providing huge choice for quite a while, but research shows that too many options can be overwhelming to the point of being a deterrent, even for a generation that has grown up in a world of endless opportunities.” And although we might be getting lazy when it comes down to choosing our own shopping, the demand for boxes that give us a reason to stay active is in fact growing. “Beauty was the original big driver in the subscription box category but the latest trend we’re seeing is a growth in the fitness category,” says Cadman. Actress Kate Hudson co-founded Fabletics in 2013, and its VIP subscribers receive monthly outfit suggestions, which they can choose to buy or pass up for that month. Meanwhile, sportswear giant Adidas launched its own Avenue A subscription service earlier this year, becoming one of the biggest retailers yet to go down this path. “The market quite possibly hit its zenith with

funding rounds exceeding $300 million in the third quarter of 2015, and now that the market’s more competitive, we’re seeing more established players – big businesses with plenty of retail savvy – crowding out the newcomers,” says Dorfer, reflecting on the move by Adidas. Currently only available in the US, Avenue A is aimed solely at women and a membership costs $600 (approximately £415) a year – Birchbox and Glossybox each charge just £10 plus postage and packaging per month. Those who sign up to Avenue A get a quarterly delivery of three to five running and training products, curated by what it calls ‘fitness celebrities’, to add an inspirational and aspirational facet. And as for its expense, Cadman believes it’s more often value than actual cost that consumers

Disney, Sephora, and Adidas are three recent examples, and each of them is finding a new way to connect with their consumer, getting them to spend more and interact more on a regular basis,” Cadman responds. “It’s also a useful way to test potential products while in beta stage (including dipping a toe into unorthodox territories), to cross-sell items and also assess how certain groupings of products may work together – information that can be fed back not just to the product development teams but potentially even onto the shop floor,” concludes Dorfer. It’s something that reflects Adidas’ decision to launch its innovative new trainer, the PureBOOST X, in the first box. Proposed as a totally new running shoe for women, with a floating arch that wraps around the runner’s foot, customers’ responses can

“These types of retail models present a way to potentially close some of that distance, while also locking in a degree of loyalty” pay attention to when deciding whether to commit. “The most popular boxes on our site provide a high value compared to the cost. Since you are usually getting a box of unknown items, getting a high value means that even if you only end up liking half of them, you’re still coming out ahead.” Adidas is also heavily emphasising the service’s female focus as a selling point. “Our brand is listening to what women truly want, and that is a product designed specifically for her combined with unique, customised experiences. Avenue A helps us deliver that in one convenient and inspiring package. The best part is, this is only the beginning,” said Kelly Olmstead, senior director of brand activation at Adidas. Cadman believes big brands do see this as an introduction to a viable, commercial route for the long-term.“I think many big companies are seeing the long-term play with subscriptions and finding ways they can enter the market.

to some extent be measured. Limiting numbers of the boxes also adds a layer of exclusivity before these products go on general sale, making the consumer feel that little bit more special, or chosen – something Dorfer believes is an advantage to corporate entities like Adidas who, because of its size, can appear to lack an authentic connection with its consumers. “These types of retail models present a way to potentially close some of that distance, while also locking in a degree of loyalty.” On the flipside, for men, shaving subscription service Cornerstone has found its own way to lock in willing subscribers, by being flexible. Starting at £14, it offers users the chance to pause or adjust the frequency of deliveries, as well as choosing which of the products are most suitable for their routine. Add in a personalised initialled razor with the first delivery and customers have a

reason to stay – only Cornerstone’s blades fit the shiny tool. When products don’t suit, they can be swapped. Cadman observed a growing culture of users swapping items on her site and as such set up a platform on My Subscription Addiction to facilitate it. “There’s even a swap vocabulary that has emerged, for example, ‘swap bait’ is a popular item in a box that you’ll get multiple requests for. As we are able to see what items are most popular (the most requested items on the site) it gives us extra insight into what items make for the best boxes,” comments Cadman. But could having to swap your items get tiring, and does the surprise value eventually wear off? “I think keeping it fresh is definitely a challenge. You want to have a specific audience in mind, and set expectations on what you’ll deliver each month. But if you narrow that down too much, you’ll run into the issue of eventually having to repeat products,” Cadman adds. Some brands have been getting creative to get around this issue, securing product exclusives with brands they work with or launching their own labels to expand their options. “Birchbox developed private labels (LOC – an eye shadow and lipstick brand in 2015; ARROW – an active

living make-up range in 2016) using the data insights, analytics and consumer research it would usually feed back to its brand partners, for its own proprietary usage.” It’s even opened a bricks and mortar store in New York, where you can enjoy hair and make-up services, buy full-sized products, or even curate your own Birchbox. So it seems there is a life after subscription services, as brands use what they learn about consumers and adapt their business plans to suit. stylus.com; mysubscription.com; adidasavenuea.com; cornerstone.co.uk; birchbox.co.uk; glossybox.co.uk

Canary Wharf Group lends a helping hand On Thursday 7 April, employees from Canary Wharf Group joined the East End Community Foundation alongside other local companies to assist at their annual Tea Dance. As part of a succession of Tea Dances since 2006, this year’s event was in celebration of the Queen’s 90th Birthday, bringing together approximately 200 local elderly residents for an afternoon of tea, cake and dancing.

Canary Wharf Group ‘Building Legacies’ Canary Wharf Group’s flagship enterprise support arm, East London Business Place (ELBP), is pleased to announce the launch of a new three-year free business growth and procurement support programme called ‘Building Legacies’. Part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, this programme follows hot on the heels of ELBP’s previous Fit for Legacy and Ready to Supply the City projects, which have jointly realised over £18m in contract wins for local Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). ELBP is seeking applications from local East London SMMEs in the construction, digital/creative and care sectors, who wish to take advantage of the free business coaching and mentoring support on offer. If you would like more information or wish to register for the programme (and are an SMME trading in a London borough postcode), please email info@buildinglegacies.co.uk.

As rates of loneliness among the elderly in the East End have doubled, the EECF have made it their mission to reduce social isolation. The Tea Dance was therefore an excellent opportunity for residents to socialise with people from different cultural and social backgrounds. CWG employees were delighted to get their dancing shoes on and help make the day a success.

VISUAL ARTS Take a break to explore and enjoy Canary Wharf’s temporary exhibitions and permanent art collection around the estate

Transfer Laban: Wolfgang Weileder Montgomery Square / FREE / 13-24 June – Monday- Friday / 7.30am – 4.30pm With performances by students from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance at 12.30pm and 4.30pm. Part of London Festival of Architecture 2016 The façade of the Laban Building (Herzog & de Meuron, 1997) is recreated by artist Wolfgang Weileder as a performative time-based sculpture whereby the shape and dimensions of a building are only momentarily revealed. Through a process of simultaneous construction and deconstruction, each weekday over the two-week period, the 40 metre-long façade will appear section by section as the structure moves slowly across Montgomery Square. Erected

from white lightweight concrete blocks and supported by a system scaffolding structure, each section will be visible for a single day before being deconstructed and rebuilt as the next section in the sequence. The process will be recorded using time-lapse video and long exposure photography, capturing the entire façade as it materialises over time. Working in collaboration with Charles Linehan and students from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, a series of new dance performances has been developed in response to the work and will be presented on site each day during intervals in the construction process. An important element in this public art project is the participation of students of Barking & Dagenham, Tower Hamlets and Havering Colleges. Commissioned by Locus+, in partnership with Canary Wharf and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Transfer Laban has been realised with funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and is supported by Arts Council England. wolfgangweileder.com; locusplus.org.uk

Quayola: Laocoön

COMMUNITY WINDOW GALLERY

Lobby, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf until 24 June / FREE

Few works of art have received as much attention as the Laocoön and His Sons, now in the Vatican in Rome, since its discovery in 1506. Reproduced in all possible media, it has become one of the most enduring archetypal forms of European art, a metaphor for the creative power of art itself, for the sheer virtuosity in the rendition of pathos and the exploration of the human form. Quayola’s Laocoön is the latest incarnation in this tradition but is more than just another specimen in an army of variants – it is a meditation on the art of sculpture itself. The statue is here captive, trapped by the matter that once surrounded its tormented body. Quayola’s sculpture is the result of a single choice among an infinite number of possibilities. His designs for this work are the result of complex computational processes explored via custom-made software. 3-D scanning and modelling were employed to bring the sculpture from physical to digital form; the information was then processed and translated into the physical model by milling using robotic arms. It has been created in a bespoke material made from special resin filled with pulverised white marble. Exhibited alongside the sculpture are a series of prints and video charting the process. quayola.com

EVENT: Tuesday 7 June, 6.30 to 7.30 pm / FREE Davide Quayola discusses his work with art historian Camilla Pietrabissa and curator/researcher Mara-Johanna Kölmel. To reserve a place contact Canary Wharf Public Art Office at visualart@canarywharf.com

SALES TOM YEOMANSON, sales manager at Knight Frank Tower Bridge, comments on the trends in the residential sales market

T

he first signs of summer have finally started to appear, but just when it looks like the weather is on an upward trend, things change. The sales market in our region has displayed similar characteristics lately. The market was incredibly active at the beginning of the year as purchasers looked to secure second properties before the increased stamp duty deadline of 31 March. As the deadline approached, activity slowed and we got the sense that buyers had either bought somewhere or decided they had missed the opportunity. Strangely though, enquiries picked up again almost immediately on 1 April. Currently, the market seems fairly well balanced. Stock levels of available property are good, meaning buyers have choice. However, there remains some uncertainty from prospective purchasers regarding Brexit: will it happen and if it does, what affects might it have on property prices?

“Currently, the market seems fairly well balanced” The general consensus in the City is that Britain will remain in the EU. Therefore some buyers are seeing the market today as a good opportunity to try and secure something before the referendum. They feel that if Britain remains in, confidence will rise, as will the competition to buy. As ever, only time will tell. If we ignore the investment angle for a moment though, our area is a wonderful and vibrant place to live. It has excellent transport links and a diverse range of stock catering to virtually all requirements. So, although it looks like Britain will vote to remain in the EU in the referendum on 23 June, I hope this question alone is not putting off too many people from purchasing in a truly great part of a world-class city.

LIVE ON THE WILD SIDE Sir David Attenborough recently opened a new nature reserve in partnership with the London Wildlife Trust at Woodberry Down in Stoke Newington. Thanks to a £230,000 contribution from Berkeley Homes, Woodberry Wetlands has been able to reopen for the first time since its construction almost 200 years ago. A team of local volunteers were present at the unveiling of Woodberry Wetlands, a protected urban oasis that attracts wildlife rarely seen elsewhere in London. Attenborough, a patron of the Wildlife Trust, said: “Contact with the natural world isn’t a luxury; it is a huge pleasure and brings such delight, but it is a necessity to all of us.” To coincide with the launch of Woodberry Wetlands, Berkeley Homes is launching a new phase at Woodberry Down – the Nature Collection. Those lucky to snap up one of these privileged properties will have the rare opportunity to live adjacent to a protected nature reserve, and benefit from uninterrupted views of London’s unique wildlife, rural scenery and the Stoke Newington Reservoir. woodberry-down.co.uk

lettings manager at Knight Frank Tower Bridge, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market

T

he transition from spring into summer usually marks an upward turn in the lettings market. Families prefer to take up occupation during the school holidays and graduates need to secure somewhere before commencing positions during the autumn intake with the large corporate firms. When the time comes for families to downsize or graduates to upsize, their contracts are usually stuck in an annual cycle that ends during the summer months, and professional landlords look to capitalise on this increased demand. Over the past 12 months, however, we have seen the investor landlord come under repeated attack from the chancellor with the increased rate of stamp duty for second homes, and proposals to end tax relief on mortgage interest in April’s Budget. When you also factor in the upcoming EU referendum, there is a lot of uncertainty going into this year’s summer lettings market. What we are starting to see though at these early stages, is an increase in the amount of rental stock finding its way onto the market. This is most likely the result of many new and existing investor landlords making last-minute purchases before the stamp duty changes took effect. At the same time, with so much volatility in the global financial markets right now, we are seeing companies cut their relocation and accommodation budgets for senior staff. With many executives now out searching with lower rental budgets, we’re starting to see a shift in demand to the City and Fringe areas, with rental growth in these areas currently outstripping that of prime central London. Nobody can say for sure what lies ahead over the next few months, but the spike in available property is likely to iron out soon and demand should return post-referendum – regardless of the result. This should hopefully mean a healthy summer market, but perhaps it’s going to arrive a little later this year – just like the summer weather.

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE: WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OUR NEW MAYOR

Diana Alam, head of residential development sales, JLL

As Sadiq Khan becomes the new Mayor of London, what are the implications for housing in the capital?

S

adiq Khan has committed to delivering more affordable housing for Londoners and to giving residents ‘first dibs’ on those homes. He has said he will introduce a 50 per cent affordable housing target for new developments, and use mayoral planning powers to stop ‘buy-toleave’. He has also vowed to stop homes being sold off in advance to foreign investors. In reality, however, there is little evidence of ‘buy-to-leave’ happening in the capital, and restricting demand is a quick way to compromise the viability and deliverability of new developments. The industry is already signed up to the Mayor’s ‘London first’ concordat for sales, which commits to giving Londoners first option on new homes in the capital and which we wholeheartedly support. Ultimately domestic demand is not strong enough to drive off-plan sales

114 | CANARY WHARF

rates, so the issue here is that action to restrict overseas investors would simply destroy the viability of most schemes, and would reduce, not increase, the level of affordable housing delivery. We should remember that Ken Livingstone had this aim and never got close to implementing it. Under Sadiq’s plans, the £400m ‘left’ in this administration’s affordable homes budget will be used to support housing associations in their plans to deliver more homes. London would benefit and the intent is commendable, but there again remains a question around the industry’s ability to deliver. Construction costs alone are increasing by around eight per cent each year (driven by labour and materials shortages), which makes higher supply scenarios challenging to say the least. Similarly the plan to bring forward more land owned by public bodies like TfL, and to use the Mayor’s new homes team to develop that land, would be universally supported across the industry if it makes commercial sense. Sadiq has a number of other plans revolving around creating a living rent, setting up a not-for-profit lettings

agency to promote longer-term stable tenancies for responsible tenants and good landlords, and introducing a landlord licensing scheme. All of these policies may be beneficial to the market, but cost, process and regulatory challenges would pose hurdles to overcome. There is no doubt that the next Mayor will be committed to alleviating the severe housing difficulties London faces. There is also no doubt that there are many promising ideas, however it is not for shortage of ideas that London finds itself in this situation. Rather, it is the deliverability of those ideas that matters most in a market where competition for funds is aggressive, where processes can tie up opportunities, and where local and international interests may be at odds. Any Mayor who can work with the grain of the market to create long term and lasting solutions will make genuine progress in addressing London’s housing provision problems. Sadiq has promised to be the most pro-business Mayor yet, if he holds to this the development community will play its part in addressing the supply challenge.

STATE OF THE MARKET the mortgage Movers and Shakers Jamie Hutton, assistant sales manager at Franklyn James Estate Agents comments on the state of the residential property market

A SAFE HAVEN ALASDAIR CARPENTER,

managing director of Lourdes Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

lack of consumer confidence is currently casting a shadow over property prices. With the complex subject of Brexit still affecting the UK economy, average UK prices fell by 0.8 per cent in April. Investors appear to be holding back until the outcome of the June referendum vote is known and consequently, home buyers are taking advantage of the current state of the market to make offers averaging around five per cent below asking prices. This situation – together with recent tax and legislative changes – means that anything that can stimulate growth within the property market at this stage is very welcome. Barclays is the first major bank to bring back the 100 per cent mortgage since the last financial crisis. This news has understandably attracted a lot of attention and raised a number of questions. Some see the new scheme as a real lifeline for first time buyers, as it can take a significant amount of time to build up even a five per cent deposit – something that Barclays reports to be the biggest obstacle for first time buyers. It is also good news for parents, who won’t have to part with large sums of cash indefinitely, although a hefty financial input is still required from a ‘helper’ who can recoup the funds after three years. Even taking into account the financial buffer provided by the ‘helper’, some still see this as a risky move by Barclays. Despite much tighter regulations since the financial crisis, 100 per cent loans still have a bad reputation. It is likely that Northern Rock’s notorious 125 per cent mortgage will be used as a prime example of what can go wrong when banks are too ‘generous’ with their loans, but other lenders will be sure to monitor Barclay’s level of success within the market and follow suit with their own 100 per cent products. The removal of a barrier, which has long hampered first time buyers might prompt an increase in the level of activity in the home buying sector of the market, something that should balance out the reduced number of buy-to-let investors who have been hit with other restrictive new measures.

he London property market, often a common topic shared over a quiet drink or across the dinner table, has probably been higher on the agenda in the last few months than at any time in recent years. The introduction of higher rates of stamp duty land tax (SDLT) on purchases of additional residential property, such as on buy-to-let properties and second homes, and the upcoming referendum have left many wouldbe buyers uncertain as to whether now is a good time to buy in London. Housing market pundits are also divided. Will the market continue to increase or are we about to see the first genuine downturn since 2008? Statistics have shown that prices increased in March at their fastest monthly rate since 2004 as buy-to-let investors accelerated their purchases ahead of a stamp duty rise in April. However, following this introduction, we now expect to see a level of uncertainty in the housing market, prior to the EU referendum in June. This is most evident in prime central London locations, particularly at the highest echelons of the market, with property prices dropping by up to 11.8 per cent in some areas. The good news for property owners and sellers is the fall will likely prove short-lived, as the power of the UK property market will outweigh any short term insecurity, with strong underlying upward pressure on house prices in the medium term. This prediction is encouraged by the fact that there is a continued lack of supply of available properties, thus preventing prices from falling materially whether we’re in or out of Europe. This is certainly proving to be the case in outer boroughs, which have seen the strongest increase in demand, with particular influence from the new Crossrail stations. My views are that even though there is uncertainty in the market, this will be short-lived and no matter what, London will remain a global safe haven for investment.

The development offers plenty of space outside of the property to enjoy, with a gym, 20-metre swimming pool and spa, and a residents’ lounge area. QUEBEC QUARTER The first phase of L&Q’s Quebec Quarter development has now been launched, with the project set to complete in 2017. The development offers a combination of 151 one-, two- and three-bedroom private sale apartments and 69 one- and twobedroom shared ownership scheme homes, and is located between Canada Water and Surrey Quays stations. Research by Dataloft, commissioned by L&G, indicates Canada Water house prices rose by 19 per cent in 2015 alone, while Cathy Lloyd, sales and marketing director for L&Q, comments, “within SE16 alone, there are 2000 new homes in the pipeline – making it London’s second largest area of redevelopment south of the river.” As well as attractive investment value, every apartment is beautifully presented with sleek, lacquered kitchen units, AEG appliances and neutral carpeting. Most spaces also benefit from floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace or balcony, and many are also dual-aspect to take advantage of the surrounding views of woodland and the city skyline. A total of 65 per cent of the site is dedicated to being a green environment with communal grounds, play spaces for children and direct access to Russia Dock Woodlands.

from £775,000 for a three-bedroom apartment

KEYBRIDGE Keybridge Lofts, to complete by 2018, will be the tallest brick building in the UK at 129m high, and along with the Keybridge House phase, forms part of the Keybridge development – a joint venture between Mount Anvil and FABRICA by A2Dominion, situated in Vauxhall. Arranged across four buildings in total, the development also offers one acre of outdoor space, featuring seating areas, a communal garden, courtyards, and sculptures. Delivering a total of 441 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom residences and penthouses, it is a large-scale project in an area seeing significant regeneration, including the opening of a Damien Hirst gallery. The interiors, crafted by Darling Associates, pay homage to the area’s industrial past, featuring steel, raw timbers and exposed brick, while buyers have the flexibility to choose from three colour palettes. Most also come with a terrace, garden or Juliet balcony – a must-have for higher floors to enjoy the views – while residents can also expect numerous facilities from a concierge and underground parking to a pool, spa and gym.
