“The car has become the protective shell of urban man” – Marshall McLuhan
T
he world’s largest free motor show arrives in Canary Wharf on 8 June, bringing with it test driving opportunities and eagerly awaited launches from various luxury car brands – and a touch of fantasy. Although, ultimately decisions on hubcaps and hardtops are personal, on page 67 we share some of the highlights from Motorexpo 2015, and borrow a Rolls-Royce Wraith for our fashion shoot (page 40). If you’ve always aspired to take your passion for motoring to the track, you may be interested to hear that it’s a role that involves five hours of fitness training per day. This month, personal trainer Gerry Convy, who counts Lewis Hamilton among his former clients, tells Aimee Latimer exactly how many practice laps and lunges it takes to be an F1 driver (page 58), before former British champion Sir Stirling Moss OBE reflects on how the industry has changed, 60 years after his win in the Mille Miglia road race (page 62). Alternatively, if motorbikes are more of a passion, Jennifer Mason reviews Harley Davidson’s very first electric model on page 70. Fast cars and eye-catching stunts were part of the draw to BBC One’s new flagship show The Interceptor, for actor O.T. Fagbenle. One of our most perceptive interviewees ever, on page 20 the star of the series explains why he thinks we’re really so interested in action-packed crime dramas and talks about making the transition from stage to screen. Finally, as the dating app Tinder unveils a collaboration with Instagram and moves to monetise some of its extra features, we meet its president Sean Rad – a 29-year-old who is out to change the way we network forever (page 78). And, for entertaining your new contacts, we have various suggestions in our food and drink section as new venues launch in Canary Wharf (page 90).

Star
on the
rise
Star of BBC One’s The Interceptor, hitting our screens this June, O.T. Fagbenle talks moral grey areas, superheroes, and why filming car chases is exactly as fun as it looks WORDS: AIMEE LATIMER
O
.T. Fagbenle has all the makings of a new, British TV hero: young, handsome – and with a strong handshake. He looks good in a suit and is even fully cooperative when the stylist cajoles him into a pair of purple palm tree trousers as the photographer takes pictures in the sweeping penthouse of Four Seasons, Canary Wharf. We take shots around the hotel, including one of him suited and with crossed arms on a steely staircase in the lobby, “Well not there, he looks like a candidate for The Apprentice” someone points out. We huddle, agree and move him to the bar. He’s easy to make look good, and as we fly through the shoot in two hours, it strikes me that this may be one of the last times Fagbenle can be in public, let alone on a photo shoot, without attracting a crowd. We meet for our interview a couple of months before the release of his new show, The Interceptor, a BBC One flagship drama with a big budget for car chases, action scenes and homegrown talent. It’s inspired by a book of the same name by former customs agent Cameron Addicott and follows the real events of his career. Fagbenle
plays Marcus Ashton (Ash), a customs agent who, fed up with taking down petty criminals, gets headhunted by a covert government organisation and propelled into the realm of taking down the UK’s biggest drug dealers. With these stings often starting off with phone tapping, from which the series gets its name, The Interceptor opens the doors to a murky underground world filled with one-upmanship and deceit. It is not a scene where the good guys are easily identified by their shining armour, which as a notion suits Fagbenle just fine, “I think I reject the idea of good and bad,” he tells me, palm trees replaced with the off-duty actor uniform of jeans, a white T-shirt and leather jacket. “I think everyone just does what they think is best most of the time, and what is accessible to them. Really it’s circumstances that make up someone’s moral code. What interests me in all characters is ambiguity. So you have this raving lunatic who’s lovely to his grandmother, or this great politician who’s seducing his interns – real people are full of contradictions and when we see those on characters on screen, we relate to them.” It’s an age old formula – good meets bad, lines get crossed, things get messy – and one that keeps drawing in audiences, “I think there are two motivators for people in the world: love and fear. Fear is one we’re attracted to a lot in our entertainment, whether that be on a rollercoaster

or watching some gruesome horror story. So I think crime capers connect to some fear we have of these quote-un-quote bad guys going around and it gives us some measure of relief to know there’s some demi-superheroes around taking them down and keeping us safe. Going through that ritual of seeing justice happen, and going through retribution or seeing justice is served is somewhat of a relief for our psyche.” Not that Fagbenle is all murder and retribution. In fact, sitting across from me in the Four Seasons’ Quadrato Restaurant eating roasted salmon and telling me about The Interceptor crew – humbly referring to everyone by name and being quick to point out their successes (“the executive producer Tony Saint? He was nominated for a BAFTA for writing, you know?”) – his pride for the project is apparent and it’s hard to image him pistolwhipping a villain on camera. But then, Fagbenle’s always been an actor’s actor. He dabbled in music, playing the saxophone at the likes of Edinburgh Festival before moving into a very successful career in theatre, attracting critical acclaim along the way. In the famously fickle world of drama, he boldly decided to make a clear break from theatre and tackle the difficult transition to screen, “At some point I became very curious about working in front of the camera. I’d seen in the careers of other actors – who I really respect – who have stayed in theatre and at some point they found it too late to get into screen. So I stopped taking theatre auditions, I turned down quite a few plays and then sat unemployed for a while until someone gave me my first screen job.” The wait paid off: movie and TV shows followed, including a role in the currently airing HBO show Looking about a group of gay men living in a city. “Jumping from playing a quite flamboyant, gay musician from San Francisco to the tough guy from the streets who wants to take down bad guys is one of the bigger changes I’ve had in my career so far,” he says, “but I’m really relishing it.” Arguably, The Interceptor will be his biggest role to date. And following on the heels of the BBC’s last big crime drama Sherlock – which we all know exploded internationally into a burst of awards, publicity, and Cumberbitches – is he daunted by how drastically his life could change? “There are huge benefits to be being famous,” he admits, refreshingly. “It gives you access and people feel like they can relate to you – and they’re
CANARY WHARF | 23

much nicer to you! But having a sense of privacy is one of those things you don’t value until you lose it. It’s a very unpredictable industry in which to try and assess what anything’s going to end up being – and, almost more importantly, how you’re going to feel about it. It’s a mixed bag – I’ll get back to you!” Just to play the role itself genuinely seems enough for Fagbenle, “When I’m acting I’m a conduit of that story. [I liked] how The Interceptor was inspired by a real guy who for a long time fought the biggest drug dealers in the country. They say in undercover work there’s the ‘three D’s’: depression, divorce and drink, which hits a lot of agents. I think that’s something a lot of professionals who face high-pressured environments can relate to.” Not too light-hearted a project, there is one huge perk: car chases. “It’s as fun as it looks,” he grins, “I think a lot of the time my 12-year-old self is

having the time of his life getting to do car chases and these fight sequences. They let me do a lot of my own stunt driving, which I think they’re crazy to do because I have a need for speed. There were a couple of close calls, but it was a lot of fun.” I imagine the white knuckled insurance team… “I’m into weird cars. The first car I ever bought was a 1979 Camaro, which is like a hot rod car. At the moment I’m driving a MINI, which is fun to zip around town in,” he adds. Not just at red lights, O.T. Fagbenle is one to watch. “My whole career I’ve had a really good time and I think a lot of that is taking time to give thanks and live in the moment. So, it’s a huge opportunity and lots of people are talking in big ways about what the show can be and will be. I do feel like a lot of people are going to really like the show, but I try and focus on the present and getting the most out of wherever I’m at the moment.” And at the moment, things are looking good.

TURNING POINT In a unique collaboration between British jeweller Boodles and the Royal Opera House, the very essence of dance has been translated into a fine jewellery collection. Head designer Rebecca Hawkins has been fascinated by ballet since childhood and has indulged her passion by exploring the physicality of this art form, working with The Royal Ballet’s associate director Jeanetta Laurence. The inclusion of kite-shaped diamonds, sourced by Boodles’ head of precious gemstones Jody Wainwright, evoke the geometric forms of dancers in a pas de deux, along with pairs of Ashoka diamonds which have been designed to balance on a single fine point (echoing the balletic movement). Photographer Charlie Dailey went behind the scenes at the Royal Opera House to capture the ballet dancers in action. Pas de deux: inspired by The Royal Ballet, available from June; boodles.com

Fully Charged Deviating from its customary square-cased creations, Bell & Ross presents this, the Vintage WW1 Edición Limitada. Handsome to the hilt, the timepiece is intended to honour the craft, colour and celebrity of Cuban cigars. Thanks to a double barrel power reserve, the 42mm watch will run for five days before it needs winding. It comes housed in a case of Makassar ebony, and rare and precious kaya wood, which can be transformed into a humidor for 50 cigars complete with humidifier and hygrometer. ONE TO WATCH This month Sandy Madhvani, Showroom Manager at David M Robinson in Canary Wharf, selects his watch of the moment:
“This pilot's watch by Patek Philippe caused quite the stir when it was unveiled at Baselworld this year. It represents a bold move away from the brand's customary conservatism. To see what else the brand launched at the show, visit David M Robinson, which will be hosting a Patek Philippe exhibition between 15 and 21 June” Calatrava Pilot Travel Time, £31,120, Patek Philippe Available at David M Robinson, Jubilee Place, Canary Wharf
Horological Proving itself a promoter of small, independent watchmakers, Harrods has become a supplier of MeisterSinger, alongside Speake-Marin, for which it acts as exclusive UK stockist. The former is a German brand, known for being the only watch company to make exclusively single-handed watches. The latter is the eponymous creation of English watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin. A special green dial version of MeisterSinger's Salthora Meta has been made exclusive to Harrods. For £2,375, you’ll get an attractive jumping hour watch with an automatic movement and sapphire case back. The elegant, Edwardian-inspired SpeakeMarin collection comprises perpetual calendars, tourbillons and minute repeaters. Friend of the brand Pierce Brosnan lends his face to the marketing campaign.
Boutique Bonanza In less than a year, horological heavyweights Blancpain, Bell & Ross, IWC, Richard Mille and Patek Philippe have turned central London into a mecca for watch aficionados. The latest Swiss export to stake their claim on W1 is JaegerLeCoultre, which opened a boutique at 13 Old Bond Street last month. COLLECTION
History in the making As the globally venerated masterpiece-maker that is Patek Philippe celebrates its 175th anniversary, Annabel Harrison takes a closer look at the Watch Art Patek Philippe Grand Exhibition London, taking place from 27 May until 7 June at the Saatchi Gallery
“W
hen I held that watch, I felt its power reverberate through my entire soul… It was like holding a living heart… something organic, something that’s alive.” Ahead of Sotheby’s sale of Patek Philippe’s Henry Graves Jr. Supercomplication pocket watch in Geneva, which took place in November 2014, Daryn Schnipper, Chairman of Sotheby’s International Watch Division, recalled her first encounter with this world-renowned watch and its sale at Sotheby’s in 1999. “We valued it at $3-$5 million. As we got closer to the sale, the excitement started to build... [On the day] there were six bidders up to $6 million and all of sudden there were two new bidders.” It went for $11 million. “A ‘Supercomplication’ is more than a horological work; it’s beyond a watch. It is a masterpiece.” It was sold again just 15 years later, for a remarkable $24.4 million. Schnipper’s passionate words encapsulate what many watch enthusiasts feel, that their precious timepiece is so much more than an inanimate object exchanged for equally inanimate cash; purchases are often far more subjective and emotional than horological philistines might imagine. This is what came into play at both the 1999 and 2014 auctions. Smart, informative catalogues showcased the wares on offer, in particular this
renowned Supercomplication, and objective price estimates were given. Despite the most careful, calculated planning and thorough, expert research, there is always a chance of an estimate being thoroughly trumped because once emotion comes into it, everything can change. This Patek Philippe timepiece, on the day of the 2014 auction, aroused such emotions. In addition to being able to lay claim to having created the world’s most expensive, and therefore valuable, timepiece, the company has one of the most emotive, and familiar, advertising straplines in the watch industry: “You never actually own a Patek. You merely look after it for the next generation.” In black and white images of happy family units, the people take centre stage, and the watch plays second fiddle. Because it’s certainly not just a watch. It’s a family heirloom, made up of as many memories and feelings as parts and pieces. In purchasing one, you consider generations past, present and future. In fact, I find summing up neatly the worldwide appeal of, and reverence for, Patek Philippe almost as difficult as I would assembling the 900 parts of this Supercomplication from scratch. As Nick Foulkes, author of an authorised biography about the brand’s history, says, “Patek is almost a religion for some people and there are as many ideas of what Patek

The Ages of Man When it comes to looking youthful, men have a biological advantage. And, with the global anti-ageing market worth an estimated $122.4bn, there are more ways to capitalise on genetic benefits than ever WORDS: alexandra twohey
GENETIC ADVANTAGE First things first: it is often said that men look younger or at least more refined than women as they age. Whether or not it’s the case, the composition of the skin in males and females is biologically different. The sex hormones or androgens secreted in males, such as testosterone, are responsible for making men’s skin around 25 per cent thicker with a higher density of collagen, the skin’s structural protein. This is advantageous because it’s when production of collagen declines with age that wrinkles start to appear. In addition, men have more sebaceous glands and an increased production of sebum which makes skin oilier and therefore keeps it more moisturised. Of course, you can undo the good work of mother nature with environmental factors – in short, too much sun and too much fun. A healthy lifestyle and a few added extras are the key to ageing well.
INSIDE OUT Keeping an eye on what nutrients you’re putting in your body is vital for maintaining vitality and a youthful appearance. “Getting old is something that affects both men and women, and a real anti-ageing process always comes in the form of a balanced diet and optimum nutrition,” explains Vidhi Patel, in-house nutritionist at MINERVA Research Labs. “Try to include organic Maca powder into
GROOMING
your diet as it promotes energy and skin health and is a powerful anti-ageing supplement for men in particular. Incorporating five to six organic walnuts or pistachio nuts a day also keeps skin firm, while sipping lukewarm water before drinking tea or coffee will reduce the harsh effects of caffeine.” If juicing and organic cleanses aren’t for you, try a daily shot of Active Gold Collagen (£35.99, Boots, Canada Place), which was reformulated in 2013 to tackle predominantly male age-related concerns, in a move which saw more than 7,000 men join the waiting list ahead of its launch. The liquid supplement includes 4,000mg of hydrolysed marine collagen, vitamins and minerals and in clinical trials on 1,500 men aged between 35 to 59, the drink was self-reported to have resulted in a more youthful skin tone in all cases, when used daily. In addition, the inclusion of zinc is intended to promote cell renewal and encourage hair growth, while glucosamine is said to support the reparation of cartilage in joints. If you’d rather take a supplement in tablet form, Imedeen for Men contains both zinc and vitamin C (£42.99 for 60 tablets, Imedeen, Boots, Canada Place).
DIY SPA Next, it’s time for products. Sharon Alleary, skincare specialist at Cellcosmet UK explains: “Men nowadays tend to be far more skin savvy. Research has shown huge growth in the male anti-ageing market and rather than shying away from the ‘feminine world of pampering’, men are becoming aware that their skin needs the same nurturing as women’s.” If giving yourself the odd treatment in the privacy of your own home sounds more doable than a trip to a spa, Cellmen Rare Mask (£162, The Garden Pharmacy, garden. co.uk) is a good place to start. Unlike other brands that use freeze-drying as a method of preserving the ingredients in their products, which
can affect potency, Cellman believes it is able to harvest the activity of up to 95 per cent of the natural cells that it uses, thus making its formulations more effective. The brand recommends using the mask twice per week for one month for radiance. Alternatively, SK-II MEN Facial Treatment Essence (£130, Harrods, harrods.com) contains a 95 per cent concentration of a patented extract that the brand calls Pitera™. The nutrient-rich compound is said to underpin the anti-ageing properties of Sake that have been lauded for centuries and is created during the yeast fermentation process.
THE TOOL KIT However, if you do one thing each day, use a sharp razor. Shaving not only removes facial hair but also exfoliates dead skin cells and residue build up, which helps the complexion to appear refreshed. If you can spare 60 seconds beforehand, invest in LUNA for MEN (£145, FOREO, foreo.com), a nifty pre-shaving device which uses sonic pulsations to drive out impurities and deeply cleanse the face. Its reverse side features an anti-ageing surface which promises to diminish the appearance of fine lines. If you are more of a beard man, use a Conditioning Beard Oil (£40, Tom Ford, selfridges.com) to keep strands soft: nothing ages you by 20 years more than dishevelled fuzz.
SUMMER SIN Finally, prevention is better than cure. Sun exposure is a fast-track way to fine lines and dry skin, and long summer days playing sport command a high level of UVA and UVB protection. Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily Defense SPF 50 (£31, Kiehl’s Jubilee Place) has been deliberately designed to avoid leaving telltale residue on the skin and is oil free. Start using it now.

Blistering g-force, split-second reaction times and furnace-level temperatures – think you could handle being a Formula 1 driver? AIMEE LATIMER talks to F1 fitness expert Gerry Convy to find out what it really takes to become a world champion
T
here’s a reason why you’ve never seen an overweight racing driver and it’s not just because they can’t fit in the car. If you want to simulate the experience of getting behind a Formula 1 steering wheel try pulling on a suit of armour, climbing into a rocket and then playing chess as you’re exploded into orbit. Sound difficult? It is – something that Gerry Convy knows first-hand having worked as an advisor and personal trainer to the likes of Sir Jackie Stewart
OBE and Lewis Hamilton MBE, “Motor racing is a ruthless game and like all high-level sports it is about achieving an edge and ultimately drivers have to be athletes,” he explains. So, what does it take? Commitment, first and foremost. For drivers the majority of training takes place off-season (typically in winter), when most work out five times a week, during the morning and late afternoon, to build up the stamina they need – not only to race 20 times a year and make it through testing days of up to 150 laps a day – but also to survive the rigmarole of PR events and the jet lag created by taking long-distance flights around the world. Very much gone are the rock‘n’roll antics of early

competitors in the sport; days which saw the likes of the late, great James Hunt – world champion British driver and seventies playboy – stroll to his track car, cigarette in hand. Now the game is all about extreme discipline: cars are faster, technology is smarter and drivers commit to gruelling schedules to score any physical advantage that they can. “When I worked with David Coulthard during the early 2000s, F1 cars were beasts,” explains Convy, “Coulthard is naturally slim but he trained like an animal during the V10 era where the physicality of driving an F1 was at its fiercest. Now all drivers train for strength, but at that time Michael Schumacher and Coulthard were the two strongest ‘all-rounders’ in terms of fitness. Then, generally the emphasis was on more cardio and light weights – if any at all.” Nowadays, drivers focus on both strength and agility to handle modern cars. “A high level of cardio fitness is essential to deal with heart rates that can reach 200 beats per minute at times,” says Convy – compare this to an average man’s resting heartbeat of around 60 or 100 – “and the ability to maintain focus amidst the searing heat and claustrophobic humidity of a circuit in Malaysia or Singapore.”
“There comes a time when the mind of a champion transcends the rest” This full-body workout is not without its focus points and building a strong neck is key. Now depending on whether or not you train at home, you probably don’t think too much about your neck; it just needs to be neither too thin, too jowly, and strong enough to support a tie. Not for F1. The neck is one of the few body parts exposed in the car, which means it’s under the full wallop of g-force. G-force, for anybody who failed to pay attention in school physics classes, is the pressure gravity exerts onto an object when it is accelerated, and during a race this can be as strong as five times the force of gravity. As Convy explains, “The neck muscles, under braking and cornering, experience massive stresses. Unconditioned neck muscles lead to fatigue and ultimately failure to perform in an F1 car.” Lower down, powerful legs are crucial too, “The legs need to be incredibly strong and durable for the driver to be able to repeatedly press the brake pedal during a race, where an effort of up to 800 lbs per inch is required to slow the car down.” For this, Convy uses compound movements, “Deadlifts work
areas such as the legs, back and trapezius muscles.” Drivers have the additional difficulty of having to be extremely strong, yet not too bulky. For, as with a jockey on a horse, any additional kilos are deadweight on the track, “Most top-level racing drivers come from a background in karting and have the self-discipline to monitor their weight from an early age. If a driver turns up out of condition then he will soon to be told about it.” The training is more than just physical: drivers need to compete, strategise and communicate with their teams while racing – imagine trying to fill out a Sudoku while on a roller-coaster and you’re halfway there. “As in all sports, there is nothing like training at the real thing to fine-tune your skills. However, track time can be limited in the off-season due to costs and regulations so some drivers use squash, badminton or tennis to work on reaction times and eye-to-hand co-ordination. Other drivers will use tools such as a reaction devices with flashing lights to keep their reflexes in tune. Personally, I’m also a martial arts coach and use these skills to challenge the reflexes of the individual drivers. “Karting too is an excellent functional way to stay on top of ‘race-craft’ conditioning. As testimony to the value of this, the legendary seven-time F1 World Champion Michael Schumacher built his own track at his home and this formed a large part of his preparation during his incredible time in the sport.” It all comes down to needing to have your head in the game, “Mental discipline is essential to not only battle your competitors but to keep a tight mind on your race strategy and be able to cleanly and effectively execute your attacking and defensive moves at speeds of up to 300km an hour,” says Convy. Lose that laser focus and you pay the price whether it’s a position, a win, your front wing or even a world championship. There comes a time when the mind of a champion transcends the rest of the body.” Speed, stress and stamina – it all goes hand-in-hand with life in the fast lane.

MOTORING A Potent Power This June, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London, part of the H.R.Owen group, will be exhibiting the newest and most powerful addition to the Rolls-Royce range – the Wraith – in the foyer of One Canada Square, Canary Wharf as part of Motorexpo 2015, the world’s largest free-to-attend motor show. Strength meets style as the Wraith’s aerodynamic lines and gleaming Pantheon grille wrap around a powerful 6.6-litre twin turbo-charged V12 engine, which can accelerate from 0–60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and has 624BHP. In drive, the car moves seamlessly in what has been dubbed Rolls-Royce’s signature ‘magic carpet ride’ experience; a glide created by electronically controlled air suspension. Outstanding performance is married with exuberant luxury, all delivered in a style that exudes a sense of glamour and poise. This is a car for the curious, the confident and the bold and it will be on view from the 8-14 June. hrowen.co.uk/rolls-royce; Motorexpo 2015, Canary Wharf, motorexpo.com

Sixty years after his victory in the Mille Miglia race, Sir Stirling Moss OBE is releasing a career memoir, Sterling Moss: My Racing Life. Here, the former racing driver opens his home and the memory box WORDS: kate racovolis

O
n one quiet, crisp morning in early spring, I arrive in Mayfair and traipse the cobblestones with a notepad and recorder in hand, to a residential address. A few floors up on the façade of one of the properties, I find what I am looking for. A discreet glass panel is placed in front of one of the windows, no larger than the size of a few books laying side-by-side. On it is etched a racing car. You’d miss it entirely, unless you knew this marked where Sir Stirling Moss OBE lives – and has lived since he bought the property in 1952, when it was, as the former racing car driver describes, quite literally, “a bomb site”. Today, the tale of crumbling walls contrasts with a smart, prestigious address. And, when the door is opened by Sir Stirling Moss’s assistant, the interior betrays the career successes of the renowned British sportsman. Model racing cars take pride of place, ornately perched on shelves, as do an archive of photo albums containing newspaper clippings and photographs from some of the 527 races he participated in across 14 years. The collection includes the good, the bad and the ugly; safe it was not to be a racing car driver, and Moss certainly had his fair share of crashes and broken bones. We walk up the steep and narrow spiral staircase, to another room filled with memorabilia, and Moss, dressed in a pale pink shirt monogrammed with his initials in cursive script, enters the room with just as much of a presence aged 85 as he would have had 60 years ago. His outfit hints at his humorous side, too, as his braces are adorned with Bugs Bunny cartoons. He gestures to his surroundings: “I bought this house for five grand – I designed the property myself, and then had it built.” It was in May 1955 when Moss, then aged 25, won the iconic Mille Miglia road race in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. It was the victory that fans and car aficionados still pinpoint as the pinnacle of his career, although his triumph was soon followed by winning the Targa Florio race and the Tourist Trophy at Dundrod. It was also in 1955 that he famously beat world champion Juan Manuel Fangio at the British Grand Prix at Aintree in the Mercedes-Benz
W196 Monoposto. Of course, Moss’s accolades stretch beyond that year – and beyond the track; he also spent time as a motoring editor of Harpers & Queen, and received an OBE in 1959. “We are talking about something that happened 60 years ago, it is such a long time,” says Moss of his driving heyday. “When I think back, what is so surprising is the performance of the cars of that era. I was driving a car that was so advanced for the time.” Over the last 60 years technology has made racing cars even faster than Moss admits he could imagine. However he is still quite rightly lauded as one of the best all-round British drivers of all time. Numerous celebrations are taking place in his honour this year to mark the anniversary of the Mille Miglia win, one of which is the publication
“Stirling had one of his finest Formula One seasons driving for Mercedes-Benz” of a book entitled Stirling Moss: My Racing Life by Moss and Simon Taylor. Moss’s influence over the current crop of racing talent is undeniable, as Lewis Hamilton comments in the foreword: “Stirling had one of his finest Formula One seasons driving for Mercedes-Benz. I have now won my second World Championship for Mercedes-Benz. It was great to be able to line our cars up side-by-side and compare them, the W196 and the W05 Hybrid, designed 60 years apart and technically more different than you could imagine. I told Stirling I couldn’t dream of racing his car. He said he couldn’t dream of racing mine. But they were both made to chase precisely the same goal: to beat the rest of the world. And that’s what they both did.” Moss looks back on his racing career with rightly earned pride and insists driving on a public road, will never match the excitement of a circuit. “I get very little pleasure out of actually driving,” he says. “The real pleasure is before you arrive, or before you go. Racing is a totally different matter; the Mille Miglia is 1,000 miles in one lap. It was quite exhilarating,” he continues. He speaks with a calmness that doesn’t quite express the sheer adrenaline he felt when behind the wheel. It does, however, sum up, in many ways, the way he drove; not quite relaxed but composed, sitting back and upright as if to make the task ahead look completely
feature
effortless. “The journey,” he adds with a smile, “can also be pretty good too, if you’re doing well.” Moss’s life in London is not necessarily as ostentatious as one might imagine. He is concerned more with local shops and restaurants. He is, however, partial to visiting the likes of Aston Martin, when it has a new model on show. “I am very lucky to have had the life that I’ve had since I started racing. I had the chance to travel all over the world to different countries, which I still do,” he says. “It gave me the opportunity to meet new people and see new places, but still, to me London is the centre of the world.” Stirling Moss: My Racing Life by Sir Stirling Moss with Simon Taylor, £50, evropublishing.com

LIVING IT LIVEWIRE Harley-Davidson is no longer just about a deep engine rumble and the open road; with the launch of the Project LiveWire concept the brand launches (at high speed) into its electric future WORDS: jennifer mason
feature
M
y experience with HarleyDavidson motorbikes is, well, limited, to say the least. Images of gargantuan leather-clad bikers with impressive beards and even more impressive tattoos spring to mind. The term ‘Hell’s Angels’ floats across my consciousness every time I pass one of those massive machines with their signature grumble and their throaty roar as they pull away from you at traffic lights. Most of my Harley sightings happened when I was living in Dubai, or in the English countryside. Bikers in this part of London tend to be of the Boris rather than the Fat Boy persuasion (could you see a Mickey Rourke lookalike rumbling alongside City cyclists? I don’t think so). But that could all be about to change as the brand hauls itself out of its Dyna Low Rider rut with the new Project LiveWire concept; its very first electric motorbike, with the cojones of a Harley and futuristic feel of something out of the Tron series. The LiveWire is definitely more Batman than Bat Outta Hell. The project, which debuted last year in the US, has just reached European shores, launching at the Millbrook Proving Ground in May. Designed as a way for Harley-Davidson to assess the needs of its clientele, LiveWire is all about responding to the desires of the Harley biker and finding new ways to innovate. “Project LiveWire has reset expectations about what a Harley-Davidson motorcycle can be,” senior vice-president and chief marketing officer Mark-Hans Richer has said. He’s not wrong. As I turn up (in a taxi, rather inappropriately) to the UK’s first LiveWire press launch, I’m surrounded not only by your typical Hog riders but also by the next generation of bikers; modern men with hipster haircuts in smart all-weather gear and – I’m thrilled to see – even women. As I’ve never been on a motorcycle in my life (I was threatened with disinheritance at an early age to prevent irresponsible teenage scooter drivers whisking me off on the pillion seat) and I don’t have the prerequisite license, I’m not allowed to actually join the others in a proper ride around the circuit on the concept bikes. I’m genuinely gutted – but thankfully there is an alternative. The Jumpstart; a stationary LiveWire with a fixed front wheel and a sort of motorbike treadmill at the rear. I’m assured it will give me a pretty
accurate feel of the bike, despite not being able to enjoy the traditional Harley experience of the wind in my face and the open road in front of me. Unlike with other motorcycles, the LiveWire has no clutch and no gear changes; even a biking ingénue like myself can manage to start it. Putting the Jumpstart through its paces is an enlightening experience. There’s still that initial Harley vibration that I’ve heard so much about – so far, so good – and the bike is incredibly responsive, accelerating quickly and dropping speed just as fast when I take my hand off the throttle. I’m told that were I actually moving, the breaking system needs to be handled delicately to prevent wheel lock. The unexpected thing about this concept is the noise. Compared to a regular Harley, there doesn’t appear to be much there at first; it sounds like a powerful golf buggy, a sort of high-pitched wheeze. But if you get it going, it reminds me of that scene from Top Gun where Tom Cruise races the jet plane down the runway. Except this time, it’s the
“I’m surrounded not only by your typical Hog riders but also by the next generation of bikers” bike making the noise. “Project LiveWire’s unique sound was designed to differentiate it from internal combustion and other electric motorcycles on the market,” explains Richer. “The sound is a distinct part of the thrill.” Ain’t it just. Since the project launched in 2014, 7,000 bikers have taken the concept for a spin and 12,000 novices like myself have tried the Jumpstart. But what do the old-school Harley fans think? Returning from their ride, they all seem rather impressed with the new model, despite its sporty rather than low ride level and its lack of sidecar attachment. Harley-Davidson has no immediate plans to roll out the LiveWire concept to customers, so you might have to wait a few years to get your hands on one of these futuristic beauties (unless you’re Bruce Wayne). If you just can’t wait that long, read on to find out what a production bike might have in store if the clever-clogs at its HQ have their way and the brand brings Project LiveWire out of the lab and onto the open road. projectlivewire.harley-davidson.com

THE THE FRAME The frame, Harley’s first aliminium body in history, is cast from one piece of metal and pulls the design together from the handlebars to the back wheels and weighs just 6.3kg.
vital statistics The design weighs in at 210kg – that’s almost 100kg lighter than the latest Dyna Low Rider and 108kg lighter than the 2015 Softail Fat Boy. The wheelbase is 1,468mm, slightly shorter than other Harley-Davidson models, and the ride height and position lends the concept a much sportier, precisionriding feel.
plug it in The operating range of an electric motorbike depends on many factors; weather, speed and riding style, to name a few. For that reason, Harley-Davidson has applied a standard range of 53km to the concept bikes – perfect for fast-paced test drives. Once the battery (which is different from the ones used by either Boeing or Tesla) runs down, Project LiveWire takes 3.5 hours to recharge.
feature
SPEC light up In addition to its lithium-ion battery technology, Project LiveWire features the latest LED lighting technology and a full-color touchscreen instrument display which informs drivers of the speed, mileage, battery power and even transforms into an inbuilt satellite navigation system.
the SPEED Acceleration from 0 to 60mph takes less than four seconds and the bike has a limited top speed of 92mph (148km/h).
the power The concept is powered by a longitudinally mounted three-phase AC induction electric motor which produces 74hp (55kW) at 8,000 rpm and a peak torque of 52 lb-ft of torque (70 Nm).

Hey there, handsome It turns out that forgetting to add that decimal point to your last deal, hitting on your boss’s wife at the Christmas party and accidentally ‘replying all’ to every sensitive email that comes your way isn’t the reason why you haven’t been promoted – you’re just too damn good-looking. A series of studies by the University of Maryland have found that because attractive men are innately considered as more competent, they are less likely to be hired into competitive work environments as they are seen to generate too much rivalry. However, when it comes to team environments, handsome candidates are more likely to be chosen. It seems employers are unaware of their bias towards handsome gents and need to be more open-minded for, as the great Derek Zoolander said, “I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking.” umd.edu image courtesy of T.M.Lewin, Canada Place

New research by Truity Psychometrics has, perhaps unsurprisingly, found that personality traits have a huge impact on earnings. Extroverts – the outspoken, bolshie types – make almost double that of shy introverts; in the USA an average of £51,000 to £21,000 per annum respectively. One explanation for these findings is that extroverts are more likely to hold managerial roles or be in charge of people. truity.com

In 2012, two young entrepreneurs eradicated fear of rejection in the dating world with an app: one million of us have signed up every week. But what next for Tinder? We meet co-founder and president Sean Rad WORDS: gabrielle lane
the man who made tinder
feature
O
f all the interviews we’ve conducted as a team over the past few months, few have generated as much prior debate as a meeting with Sean Rad. If you don’t know his name then you’ll almost certainly know his work: Rad is the cofounder and president of Tinder, the mobile dating app that since 2012 has generated more than six billion matches between its users across 140 countries – and continues to produce 22 million more every day. Tinder eliminates the fear of rejection by allowing users to register their interest in each other anonymously. Quite simply, you scroll through profiles at random, swiping left for ‘no’ and right for ‘yes’. If an attraction is reciprocal, a chat box appears and a conversation, a date – and maybe even a marriage – follows. Or, if you believe some of the more salacious allegations doing the rounds, you might be drawn into a ‘minefield’ of promiscuity based on nothing more than a few wellchosen snapshots. Not so, says 29-year-old Rad. “People that think that are lost and superficial themselves – they don’t understand how Tinder works. Tinder is a tool for bringing people together. The whole goal is to create connections, broaden your horizons and [enable you to] interact with the world around you. Meeting people is incredibly challenging as when you meet someone, you don’t know if they like you back and it may
cofounders pooled their contact lists to get Tinder its first users, and Rad believes its audience is one of its key differentiators. “It’s a big, cool ice-breaker,” he says. “Initially it was a few hundred people in the Los Angeles area and we got the right crowd on it including celebrities – Hilary Duff just joined, Leonardo DiCaprio is rumoured to be on it. Tinder also solves a different problem. With other apps that just show you people in your area, it’s no different from seeing someone you like in the real world where it’s uncomfortable to talk to them. Tinder gives you an introduction and an excuse.” The US remains home to Tinder’s largest client base, followed by the UK, France and Brazil, and one million new users sign up globally every week. “Our users guide us,” says Rad. “We don’t think much about
“People that think [using Tinder is promiscuous] are lost and superficial themselves” feel awkward. We wanted to remove those social barriers. It makes things more comfortable and creates trust.” He goes one further when I ask when he knew the concept would be a success: “People in our group of friends that were using Tinder first were thanking me for changing their lives. That’s when I knew I must be on to something.” The prototype of the app took a month to build and was developed as part of Hatch Labs, a start-up incubator backed by media and internet conglomerate IAC, which also counts OkCupid and Match among its brands. Initially, the

our competition – we’re competing with ourselves and I would bet on the masses that we have, that we’re able to make better decisions and thus, propel Tinder further.” In April, Tinder debuted an update to users’ profiles which would allow them to share up to 34 of their most recent pictures from social media platform Instagram – “people were begging for that,” – explains Rad. Common interests will also be highlighted in red at the bottom of each profile as Tinder moves to solicit matches based on meaningful information. Similarly, to thwart those who swipe ‘yes’ indiscriminately, the app’s algorithm has been tweaked, imposing a limit on the number of times you can swipe positively in one day. Although, if you do want to click an unlimited number of times, you can do – for the equivalent of $4.99. In the first move to monetise its appeal, a Tinder Plus package that launched in March also allows premium users to undo an action if they regret dismissing a potential match, or use a Tinder Passport and search for others based on their future, not current, location

– ahead of a holiday for example. “Tinder is still free,” insists Rad. “The features that we’re charging for are not features that everyone needs to use. They’re really just super powers that you can have.” What of the functions you can’t have? “For everything we do, there are 50 things that we’ve decided not to do – it isn’t celebrated but it’s all part of the journey. What defines us is the decisions we make on what not to do.” At the moment, users are unable to search by name for someone they would like to date, in hope of targeting a Tinder profile directly. But never say never. “Some people want to be anonymous in using Tinder because it’s a new platform,” explains Rad. “On Facebook, there were lots of things that you weren’t able to view until it became ubiquitous. Searching by name is one of those functions – it might upset some of our users. Eventually we’ll get to that point: when Tinder is really etched into history then we can open it up and expand. And we’ll be able to do things that people might otherwise think of as controversial.” Another of Rad’s original business ideas was to combine an individual’s social media and messaging accounts into one platform and ‘integration’ is the buzzword for the future in the Tinder office at present. “Our identity is spread in so many places,” Rad begins cryptically when asked about his plans. “Think about music – there are other ways of sharing content so there will be more integration of personal features.” The belief is that by continuing to add to the core user experience of Tinder, it will sustain the app’s popularity. “In five years’ time, Tinder will be in everyone’s heads, whether or not you’re single,” says Rad. “The majority of the global mobile audience will be using Tinder to meet new people in some way, shape or form.” So will the world’s most famous dating app no longer be a dating app? There’s a pause at the other end of the line. “I think that’s absolutely possible.” gotinder.com

Senior Managers A Presumption of Responsibility: New Regulations within Financial Services
LEGAL issues
I
n July 2014 the financial regulators published their consultation paper; ‘Strengthening Accountability in the Financial Services Industry: the Senior Manager and Certification Regime.’ This paper dictates some of the developments following the recent creation of the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards and the Banking Reform Act 2013. Under the new regulations, due to come into force in early 2016, senior employees will carry a new, personal liability. In essence, major responsibility for regulatory compliance in financial services is shifting from businesses themselves to employees under what is called ‘The Senior Managers Regime’. The Regime stipulates that firms providing financial services must allocate specific responsibilities to individual Senior Managers, who will generally be at board-room level or just below. Each individual Senior Manager will have a statement of responsibilities and the firm itself will have a ‘responsibilities

ndividuals performing roles which pose ‘potential risks of significant harm to the firm or its customers’ will also be targeted by the new regulations. Under new regulations each Firm will be responsible for ‘certifying’ an employee’s fitness and propriety to perform their role on an on-going annual basis. Again here we are seeing a shift in responsibility as the Regulators now direct their focus to designated Senior Managers who will ultimately be accountable for the shortcomings of Certified Persons. We will be holding a seminar to provide further guidance on these issues at our Canary Wharf offices in the autumn. map’ designed to make it clear where the responsibilities within the business lie. The introduction of this regime will mean that Senior Managers will face a ‘presumption of responsibility’ relating to failure in the areas of the bank for which they are responsible. Senior Managers will assume senior responsibility in ensuring that they, as individuals, demonstrate that they took ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent, stop or remedy regulatory breaches, effectively culminating in a guilty-until-proveninnocent scenario. Ensuring that detailed records are kept of the ‘reasonable steps taken’ will therefore be key. The role carries with it the increased likelihood of being personally sanctioned by the regulators, facing financial penalties and the possibility of being prevented from holding further regulated roles. If this wasn’t enough there is also a new criminal offence of reckless misconduct reserved exclusively for Senior Managers. This is a significant legal and cultural shift in the financial services, one which employees need to be alert to. www.bindmans.com

Canary Wharf gives and gains On 15 May, volunteers from Canary Wharf Group rallied to support National Give and Gain day following the success of their participation in previous years. Although the sun did not shine as brightly as last year, spirits remained equally high as the team wholeheartedly responded to the national day’s call for employee volunteering. In an effort to make a real difference to the surrounding community, the volunteers assembled to spruce up Poplar Recreation Ground, a space cherished by local residents and admired by visitors. The activity was organised by the Borough’s Clean, Green and Highways Team and the enthusiastic group of helpers, joined by volunteers from Westpac, gave the ground some much-needed attention by removing graffiti from play equipment and rubbing down benches. By the end of the day the space was completely rejuvenated as the volunteers stained benches and repainted the metalwork to give the ground and memorial garden a fresh look. Reflecting on the spoils of their labour, the volunteers can take pride in their work to make Poplar Recreation Ground a more pleasant environment for local people to enjoy.
Crossrail Place Roof Garden in ‘Bloom’ Canary Wharf Group recently announced a new partnership with ‘The Space’ performing arts centre, which has started to deliver a slate of summer performances and activities in the performance space at the recently opened Crossrail Place roof gardens. The programme of free events and workshops for the local community is called ‘Bloom’ and will offer residents in Tower Hamlets the opportunity to take part in and enjoy a wide variety of theatre in a brand new setting. Nestled in the gardens on top of the Canary Wharf Crossrail station, the 50-seater performance space and surrounding gardens is being used by performers to ignite the imaginations of children and adults alike and to encourage audience participation. ‘Early Bloom’, the first in a series of Community Arts Festivals this year, saw the gardens be brought to life by local dance, performance and musical groups in celebration of local Tower Hamlets artistic talent. The groups that performed include Embrace Dance, George Greens School, The Isle of Dogs Choir and SpaceWorks.

Jubilee Walk Kate Nolan produces stark, modern embroideries for the 21st century. Forget the handkerchiefs that your nan embroidered, and the current trend for ‘vintage’: there is nothing dainty or conventional about her work. She uses industrial materials to bridge the gap between traditional embroidery and the modern world, creating decorative hangings that are intriguingly fragile but also utilitarian. Silk embroidery is deliberately obscured by structural PVC and, at the same time, is exposed by virtue of the fact that both sides of the fabric is intended to be viewed: there is no reverse side to hide any knots or imperfections; every vulnerability is exposed to view. katenolandesign.com

Transportation: Pritchard’s Road Day Centre Art Group until 7 July This exhibition displays the work of the Art Group at Pritchard’s Road Day Centre, a multi-cultural day centre based in Bethnal Green for adults experiencing mental health issues. The Art Group chose the subject of transport because all the members liked drawing pictures of modes of transport. When the exhibition was coming together they realised that in a city like London there are three different levels of transport which could be happening at any one time – underground, overground and up in the air. The members felt it was important to show more than one level to reflect how this challenges common preconceptions that they are often judged by their mental health needs and not by their artistic talents.

Wine fraud: A booming business Before you bid on that bottle, protect yourself against fraudsters with expert advice that will help you identify a disguised drop WORDS: JAMES LAWRENCE
FOOD & DRINK
I
n March 2012, counterfeit expert Rudy Kurniawan was arrested in the US for allegedly selling fake wine at auction, most notably top Bordeaux and Burgundy wines that were fetching thousands of pounds a bottle. It was estimated that he fraudulently produced and sold more than $20m (£11.8m) worth of counterfeit top vintages, successfully duping major auctioneers and buyers for years. After an intense trial, he was found guilty on 18 December 2013 and sentenced to ten years imprisonment, with prosecutors continuing to push for a 14-year minimum term. The trial sent shockwaves around the wine world, not least because it was the first major criminal prosecution and conviction for wine counterfeiting in the US. Suddenly, collector panic set in and many were left wondering how widespread this could be. The auctioneers themselves had also taken a slice of the action. In July 2014, Californian prosecutors charged online auction house WineGavel founder Joshua Krummenoehl with 12 counts of grand theft by embezzlement, amounting to more than £360,000. The accused was allegedly offering to sell fine wines, and then keeping the proceeds: he was sentenced to 18 months in prison in January 2015. Of course, wine fraud is scarcely a new phenomenon. Since the days of ancient Rome, unscrupulous sellers have been adulterating wine, usually with the addition of grape juice or sweeteners; then there was the Austrian wine scandal of 1985, when customers discovered that some companies were adulterating their wine with diethylene glycol. But in recent times, a much more insidious and highly lucrative form of wine fraud has become the paradigm, involving the substitution of labels. As Kurniawan demonstrated, it is relatively straightforward to produce counterfeit labels, and some experts even believe that five per cent of the wine sold on the global secondary market is fake. However, although the subject of wine fraud is clearly a global issue, China has come under particular scrutiny in recent years. The wealthy elite’s burgeoning interest in fine wine has led to a ravenous demand for the most prestigious vintages, of which there simply aren’t enough left in circulation. So the friendly neighbourhood fraudster has been happily
stepping in to meet demand; in 2012, Chinese police shut down a major operation in Shanghai, which held over 400 cases of fake Château Margaux and Lafite at a value of over £1m. Indeed, arrests of wine fraudsters are becoming an annual occurrence; last year, police arrested suspects charged with holding more than £21.5m worth of fake fine wines and in September 2014, Italian police arrested a group of fraudsters who were faking labels and documents to pass off Italian table wine as premium Brunello di Montalcino. This lauded wine can sell for £100 plus, so it’s no wonder they were enticed into counterfeiting 160,000 litres of plonk, with potential gains of over £4m. This is not to suggest, however, that the legitimate wine producers have not been fighting back. Last year, authorities in northern Italy employed local wine makers to combat the rising problem of ‘fake’ Prosecco being sold in the Veneto region. The venues were subject to fines of up to €20,000 (£17,000) each. Bordeaux estates have also been attempting to solve the problem of fake wines, with modern technology. Château Palmer secure all its bottles with Prooftag seals. This allows consumers to check the origin of each bottle online. Collectors have also taken matters into their own hands. Billionaire wine collector Bill Koch, another Kurniawan victim, has pursued claims against Christie’s (which fell through) and individuals such as internet tycoon Eric Greenberg. He sued Greenberg for passing on bottles to New York auction house Zachy’s that were known to be fake. Koch was awarded significant damages. What can the consumer do to avoid disappointment? Simon Field MW, a buyer for Berry Bros & Rudd, says: “Make sure you read the fine print regarding warranties and your rights before investing in fine vintages.” He adds, “Also, examine the bottles beforehand; alarm bells should ring if it looks like the bottle, cork, capsule, label and glass were not aged together.” Another thing to remember is that with age there should be some oxidation of the label and capsule. But the only foolproof solution is to buy directly from the producer, which is increasingly common in the US where cult wines have waiting lists. Older vintages are always going to carry a risk of being counterfeit. Perhaps for the world’s collectors, taking such an expensive gamble is secretly part of the fun.

SPORTS star
David Evans, the man behind Sports Bar & Grill at Crossrail Place, talks big plays, high-stakes and the pleasures of catching the big game with a pint
“W
e’re a sporting nation and it’s important to have a place where you can watch sports with amenities that are commensurate with 2015, rather than 1986, when you sat in a pub and watched one TV above the door on a shelf,” says David Evans, the founder and managing director of the highly successful Sports Bar & Grill brand, who found his niche in the restaurant market by bringing world-class sporting matches to premium venues with quality food. His latest branch has recently opened at Crossrail Place, and with it brings a whole new experience to Canary Wharf. As you step into Sports Bar & Grill shake off any preconceptions of a dark and dingy space; what first hits you is the abundance of light, which is created by vast window panes and numerous chandeliers. The restaurant snakes in an ‘L’ shape, anchored by a central, gleaming island bar which is surrounded by comfy leather booths and stools, more bars and an open kitchen rustling up sharing boards and food fresh off the grill – all made from scratch. Some walls
are clad in metal panels, others in marble, and an in-house fish and chip shop adds a playful – and tasty – touch of quirk. Even at 3pm on a Wednesday, when the interview takes place, the space is popular; individuals working on laptops plugged into the power outlets present on every table, a few people dressed casually are enjoying a round of drinks, and a meeting takes place over a late lunch. In the background, 45 55-inch Sony screens play any one of four games – whether that be different football matches, cricket, tennis, motoring racing or so on – their presence as noticeable or as ignorable as you’d like them to be. This is no dimly lit pub with a growling clientele ready to shatter some glasses if you’re wearing the wrong football shirt; the atmosphere here is instantly, and deliberately, welcoming, “We’re not a sports bar, we’re a restaurant that plays sports and that’s why were so popular with woman, functions and meetings,” says Evans. “There’s still a prejudice about sports bars; that
they’re aggressive or not welcoming to women. But if you look around here we have four female managers, our architect and designer are both female, and one of the other directors is female. We’re a business: we’re a restaurant and a bar – the fact that we show sport is just another factor. “We want people to feel comfortable and we want them to get a drink without waiting,” table service is encouraged and speedy, “Most of all we want our customers to feel appreciated – genuinely appreciated.” The choice to open the newest branch of Sports Bar & Grill in Canary Wharf was always the plan. Evans has been a local for 13 years, although he laughs of any accusations that the choice of the location was encouraged by his ability to walk to work, “If we could have picked anywhere in the world for our next location, it would’ve always been Canary Wharf. There’s nobody here that does what we do, we’re completely unique. We have private dining, a
“There’s still a prejudice about sports bars; that they’re aggressive or not welcoming to women” smoking terrace, mezzanines, and a fish and chip shop – there’s so many reasons to come to visit.” Evans had long observed people living and working in Canary Wharf coming to his other branches to because “people want to watch the game with a cold beer and nice toilets”, so new the concept would be a hit. “Canary Wharf had to be where we came. We are very grateful to the Canary Wharf Group for giving us this opportunity – they knew what was missing in Canary Wharf.” Both parties were right; Sports Bar & Grill has been popular from the get go, partly because of the care Evans and his team have placed on shaping it to fit the Canary Wharf audience. “We’re learning the culture and the DNA of Canary Wharf,” Evans explains, a text book hands-on manager. You’ll see him overseeing the restaurant each day, encouraging customer feedback by giving out food samples to the patrons before anything’s added to the menu, and even dolling out the odd free round or two, just because. If the great food, the service and the fantastic location wasn’t enough, as Evans says, “The atmosphere here is second to none when there’s a big game on.” D Spots Bar & Grill, Crossrail Place, Canary Wharf 020 7715 9606

A French Fancy Plateau hires from the heart of Michelin-starred Mayfair, with great results WORDS: REBECCA PARKS
W
hether you think of it as a signature of good food, or an added pressure, Plateau is part of the D&D restaurant group that boasts some of London’s most famous drinking and dining spots within its stable. In March it added three new faces to its kitchen, tasked with managing its reputation for fine dining in Canary Wharf: as well as taking on sous chef Jeremy Trehout and pastry chef Fabiano Grassi,
“It’s on McGarey’s watch that I chose snails for the first time, with a fillet of Angus beef” Daniel McGarey was instated as head chef, having been plucked from the Michelin-starred eatery, Galvin at Windows. What does it mean for one of the area’s best known restaurants? All good things. McGarey comes with a flair for French cooking, a love of lamb and credit for re-imagining less commonly eaten varieties of fish, such as hake. Admittedly, when my friend and I visited we stuck with a tried-and-tested formula of smoked salmon and scallops to start, the former with a little Oscietra caviar and pickled cucumber, the latter with lemongrass emulsion and Avruga caviar. However, both were ridiculously fresh,
and presented artistically. We drank a glass of Rose Champagne and admired the setting, which somehow made arty white chairs, starched tablecloths, floor-to-ceiling glass and candlelight look like a natural combination. It’s on McGarey’s watch that I tried snails for the first time, with a fillet of Angus beef, smoked garlic and a moreish and buttery persillade (parsley, olive oil and seasoning). They added an earthy almost mushroom-like finish to a dish that was one of the best plates of food I’ve had in a long time. The beef was succulent and rich, enjoyed best with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and greens on the side. My friend chose the chicken breast, which was served with pea purée and baby gem. Another swirl of a secret sauce and a delicate combination of flavours including smokey pancetta, had us envying just how French cooking turns chicken into a delicacy (and planning when to head to the gym). In the spirit of guilty pleasures, we were tipped off that a gorgeous white chocolate and lime mousse was about to launch on the menu. I wouldn’t normally choose a citrus dessert but if you go, you must. The gorgeous combination felt light after an evening of indulgence and avoided any of the sickliness that we expected after a bit too much fun entertaining the suggestions of the sommelier. 4th floor, Canada Place, 020 7715 7100, plateau-restaurant.co.uk

olÉ barcelona travels to a city where the architecture is as surprising as the food, and discovers a boutique hotel where quirk and luxury run side by side CLAIRE VOOGHT
“W
e are in the presence of either a genius or a madman,” Antoni Gaudí’s professor is said to have declared when the architect graduated from the Barcelona School of Architecture in 1878. Nearly 140 years later, his Sagrada Família church in the heart of the city is still not finished (work is due to be completed in 2026), but it is clear it is the work of genius. Gaudí used complex geometric patterns to create the intricate structure of the building – so complex that the designs can’t be handled by today’s standard architectural computer programs.
And he placed the columns in such a way, and the stained glass windows filter light just so, that walking inside the church feels like walking under the canopy of a forest. The city has never been short on creativity. Head to the Picasso Museum for works by the 20thcentury Spanish artist, or the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art for its collections of 1960s avant-garde art and contemporary figurative photography and constantly changing exhibitions of Catalan, Spanish and international artists. Barcelona does art well, but its food is even better. Head to La Boqueria, a covered food market, for lunch, with rows upon rows of stands selling colourful fresh fruit, and stalls serving pots of olives and sundried tomatoes, topped with a generous hunk of cheese and a fresh anchovy. But vegetarians be warned – lamb’s heads, whole rabbits and lots of iced but still-scuttling seafood is readily available here. Work up more of an appetite with a stroll down the adjacent tree-lined Las Ramblas, before an alcohol-fuelled tasting with the experts at the Jamón Experience. Clichéd as it may be, you’ll come away knowing as much about how the meat varies by region as you do about your favourite wines. After a pit-stop, head off Las Ramblas to the old city, and its Barrio Gòtico (Gothic Quarter), with its narrow alleyways, archways and looming,

intricate architecture. But the greatest thing about Barcelona, by far, is that when you’re tired of sightseeing, the city opens out onto a sandy beach that’s prime for lazing on. Down to the scent in the air – cotton flower and cotton candy – Cotton House Hotel (hotelcottonhouse.com ) has made every effort to stay true to the history of the 19th century former Cotton Textile Foundation building it is housed in. While it’s all about modern touches, including Nespresso machines, bluetooth speakers, iPods loaded with personalised music selections, the centrally located Autograph Collection hotel, which opened in February, retains many of the building’s original frescoes, dramatic fireplaces and dark wood fittings. The white, black and sepia colour scheme reflects the cotton plant; light fittings are modelled on the shape of the cotton flower; and processed cotton samples are displayed in glass cabinets. The Batuar restaurant and cocktail bar (named after cotton-pressing and purifying machine) serves beautiful Mediterranean cuisine, which is exactly what you’ll need after a dip in the rooftop
pool. With 83 rooms (five of them suites), it has a distinctly boutique feel; something that is also reflected in the attentive service. There’s a dedicated concierge service and a tailoring room: in L’Atelier you can have shirts made by prestigious Barcelona tailor Santa Eulalia. At Carpe Diem (cdlcbarcelona.com/carpe-diemlounge-club), not only it is socially acceptable to receive a head massage at the table, but dishes fusing Asian, Arabic, Indian and Mediterranean cuisines are successfully mastered. Foie gras is cooked with mango and lotus root chips and jamon is served up alongside sweet miso-glazed wild black Alaskan cod. Alongside the decor, which is a mix of all the aforementioned cultures, the beach and sea views enhance the whole experience – and it is an experience. For a unique, bird’s eye view of Barcelona’s architecture and surrounding mountains, take a helicopter tour from its downtown heliport. Spot key landmarks such as the Camp Nou football stadium, Park Güell and, of course, the epic Sagrada Família. webarcelona.com

Zurich On the global stage, Zurich may be comparatively small but Switzerland’s largest and wealthiest metropolis makes its presence known for all the right reasons WORDS: TIFFANY EASTLAND
W
ith 50 museums, theatres and concert halls, efficient public transport, a vibrant nightlife and a stretch of shops offering all the finer things in life, it’s little wonder Zurich last year claimed second place in the Global Most Liveable Cities Index. In fact, I’d not been in Zurich for long when I started to contemplate relocating, or at least planning my return. A beautiful big lake, the Alps on the horizon and an unbelievably clear river, left me wondering what supposed world number one, Geneva has that Zurich lacks. As far as I’m concerned, Zurich strikes the perfect balance. On the one hand it’s a cosmopolitan global city and exciting financial centre, and on the other it exudes the charm of a quaint village with cobblestone streets telling tales of its rich history. And the more you explore, the more you find there is to discover, calling for careful planning to ensure you catch all of its highlights.
STAY Autograph Collection’s first property in Switzerland, the hotly anticipated Kameha Grand Zurich Hotel may lend itself to a business clientele, but those travelling for pleasure will find just as many reasons to book a room. Located in Glattpark, the design hotel offers its guests the convenience of being just eight minutes from Zurich International Airport and eight minutes from Zurich’s main station. That said, there’s a lot aside from its location worth bragging about. Featuring Swiss-inspired design elements, which include walls reminiscent of Swiss chocolate and minibars disguised as “Swiss Vault”, there’s nothing generic about this hotel, in fact the unique touches continue in its communal areas with an exotic Shisha Lounge and Smoker’s Lounge. Upon arrival it’s evident that seeing to the needs of its guest is a high priority, and CEO Carsten Rath leads his team with a wealth of service and knowledge.

SAVOUR With its sophisticated and varied dining scene, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out in Zurich, however the highlights for me were Kameha Grand Zurich’s own restaurants. On our first night we were charmed by Chef de Cuisine, Raoul Mühlan and his authentic Italian fare at Restaurant L’Unico. This man is the master of pasta, inventing his own varieties from a livecooking station and proving generous with truffle sauce, while also delighting us with Mediterranean fish and meat dishes. Our second night was spent in the hotel’s Japanese fine dining restaurant Yu Nijyo, which takes a precise and artistic approach but again showcases generations of culinary skill. We sampled a selection of traditional Japanese options including delicate sushi and succulent Kobe beef, all of which were immaculately presented. Unsurprisingly, Chef de Cuisine Norman Fischer is vying for not one but two Michelin stars.
SIP After dinner I could have easily spent the rest of the evening in the confines of the hotel, sipping cocktails at Puregold Bar or unwinding in the steam baths of its spa. However, Zurich’s centre has much to offer in terms of nightlife. Recommendations from the hotel’s discerning clientele led me to Widder Bar, a popular live jazz venue. Unassuming from the outside, inside I discovered a chic but lively venue that is a favourite for both couples and large groups. I made my way to an azure-tiled performance area where a gentleman was playing piano. As I flicked through the extensive drinks list and an additional single malt whisky selection, I could see myself settling in for the evening and perhaps many more to come, as relocation returned to the forefront of my mind. ow that the election has produced a clear cut outcome with no need for negotiation between the parties to form a government, the period of uncertainty should have ended and an increase in demand has been coming through. However activity in the London market has dampened in recent months as buyers and sellers factor in political risks but also as they digest measures like the increase in stamp duty. The market is still in the final stages of absorbing these changes, meaning some buyers may still delay before acting.
“Prospective buyers will have signed rental contracts as they hedged their bets on the outcome of the election” Furthermore, some prospective buyers will have signed rental contracts as they hedged their bets on the outcome of the election, meaning they are unable to act for several more months. All of which suggests a short delay before a supply/ demand equilibrium returns to the market. As a result, there is likely to be an ‘expectation gap’ between asking prices and prices that new and newly-active buyers are prepared to pay. Expectations that prices will jump as a direct result of the general election may be unrealistic.

LETTINGS lettings manager at Knight Frank Tower Bridge, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market
JON REYNOLDS,
DID YOU KNOW? According to Savills’ Beyond the election: What next for planning? report, without sufficient action, the UK could face a planning shortfall of 180,000 homes over the next parliament. – Savills, Residential Sales Research.
the bulgari residences in dubai Bulgari, together with Dubai-based holding company Meraas recently launched the Bulgari Residences in Dubai as part of the 1.7 million sq ft Bulgari Resort and Residences. Currently taking shape on Jumeira Bay island, the residences are due to open in 2017 and will consistd of 165 apartments, eight penthouses and 15 mansions. Residents will also have access to common areas such as private landscaped gardens, swimming pools and gymnasiums, a number of dining and sporting options, a Marina and a Bulgari Yacht club. This project is a first of its kind master development in both scale and magnitude. bulgarihotels.com
A
s the sun sets on another general election, it’s time to reflect on how the seemingly long run-in has impacted the prime central London lettings market. For the past 12 months, political uncertainty and the threat of a mansion tax have boosted the lettings market as vendors held off selling and would-be buyers either extended their current rental contracts or turned to lettings for the first time. Combined with a strengthening UK economy, this pushed rental values up by 0.5 per cent in April, which was the 14th consecutive rise and the biggest in six months. Annual growth now stands at 4.1 per cent, which is its highest level for more than three years. Furthermore, rental growth has just outstripped capital growth for the first time in almost four years. The strength of the lettings market was further reflected in an 18 per cent increase in the number of tenancies agreed in the year to March 2015. Post-election, we expect to see minimal change for the lettings market in the short term: to begin with, we anticipate an increase in the amount of available properties for sale, which is likely to exceed any immediate increase in demand. A lot of would-be buyers will be tied into rental contracts and so it’s likely we’ll see a gradual increase in the number of buyers coming to the market. That will produce an expectation gap between asking prices and the price that active buyers or would-be buyers are prepared to pay. This may in turn encourage some vendors and buyers back to the lettings market. However, as we progress through summer, we are likely to see a shift in balance of supply and demand that favours landlords due to a seasonal uplift in the student and corporate markets. My advice: don't expect a sharp increase in rents post-election, but equally, I would remain bullish about what lies ahead.

s East London’s property market continues to exceed expectations, we take a look at Knight Frank’s spectacular one-bedroom loft apartment property on Great Eastern Street. Situated on the top floor, it has a gross internal area of just over 2,000 sq ft, with a separate street entrance and lift. The building was first restored in 2006/7, its original structure dating to the 1880s, and its current configuration retains much of the building’s character with
a large, open living space, original wooden floors, working fireplaces and exposed roof timbers, while a spacious terrace adjoins the bedroom on the upper level. It is in a conservations area and well-connected for transport with Old Street and Liverpool Street stations close by, and Shoreditch High Street station giving access to the London Overground.

STATE OF THE MARKET Post-Election Prospects ALASDAIR CARPENTER,
managing director of Lourdes Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market
A
s the election hype fades into the ether and the wealthy breathe a sigh of relief, the London property market is set to continue gaining momentum. The much maligned mansion tax is no longer a consideration for those operating at the higher end of the property market, and those wealthy individuals with non-domiciled tax status no longer need to fear the prospect of a Labour government. The third quarter of the capital’s property market should hopefully be a sustained period of prosperity and equilibrium. More stock will be available as many individuals seek to capitalise on strong buying demand, and attractive mortgage rates will give encouragement and security to potential buyers.
As the economy continues to improve and unemployment falls, the rental market around London’s financial districts will see an influx of new tenants. Historically, both Canary Wharf and the residential areas around the City have been a safe bet for buy-to-let investors. There is no sign of this trend changing, although the recent increases in property prices may have a downward effect on achievable rental yields for new investors. This will be counterbalanced by historically low interest rates on mortgage borrowing. I see no reason why the market will not remain strong throughout the rest of 2015. There is always the possibility of a base rate increase that will impact the cost of borrowing, but for the time being the forecast for both the sales and private rental market is positive.

INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO
Prime time in London The results of the general election appear to have had a stabilising effect on the prime London property market, with increased activity and more international investors reportedly set to flood the market. If you find yourself looking for an opportunity to secure an investment and beat increasing competition, we’ve selected three prestigious new developments with prime potential.
THE ATLAS BUILDING
L
aunching from the marketing suite in September, The Atlas Building on City Road is in close proximity to Old Street’s so-called Silicon Roundabout, an area which has seen much redevelopment and investment thanks to its cluster of technology companies. The building sits on the axis of four diverse neighbourhoods in total, which include Shoreditch, the City, Islington and Clerkenwell, offering easy access to a variety of entertainment, bars and restaurants. As the tallest building in the surrounding area, its striking slim, tapered design by award-winning MAKE Architects is
set to be a signature architectural landmark and with space to accommodate 302 apartments in the 40-storey residential tower, cityscape views from the balconies and terraces are an added luxury. High specifications, aspirational interior design and attention to detail continue from the studios, one, two or three bedroom apartments and penthouses to the building’s hotel-style amenities, which will include a gym, pool, 24-hour security and a residents’ lounge.

ROMAN HOUSE
T
he City of London connects the capital’s past with its present, bringing together centuries of old architecture with contemporary landmarks that are now shaping the skyline. Reminders of its history are being incorporated into its present day success, with remains of the archaic Roman Wall inspiring the latest phase of regeneration in London’s financial district. Situated in the centre of this revival is Roman House, an exclusive City development that exemplifies this evolution. The scheme comprises 90 stylish apartments including the highly anticipated Augustus Penthouse; the Jewel in the Crown for Roman House. The impressive three-bedroom residence provides over 2,500 sq ft of living space and wrap-around private terrace, and features contemporary interior design that cements its status as the ultimate turnkey property. Roman House offers a rare chance to live in this unique location and with demand continuing to grow; experts anticipate that the City market will outperform that of prime central London. This new wave of development is already benefitting from the ‘Crossrail effect’ and the growing supply of new offices and extensive public realm are also catalysts for transforming this innercity quarter into one of the most vibrant and dynamic places to live and work.
REGENT APARTMENTS
The Augustus Penthouse is priced at £3,950,000

Its quieter, canal-side location in Zone 1 offers tranquil cycle routes and waterway walks, whilst also being within walking distance of the City. With a short, swift journey to King’s Cross St. Pancras by tube, it means even Paris is just over two hours away. High specification interiors feature sleek handleless kitchens with top class integrated appliances and underfloor heating. Some apartments also offer internal sliding pocket doors to allow residents to create a personalised and flexible space, while the central lobby’s professional concierge service offers both convenience and security.

LET A LEGACY
A
s well as the sporting legacy from London’s 2012 Olympic Games, the land next to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park which housed the Athletes’ Village has been transformed into a residential development. East Village, a complex of nearly 3,000 properties, of which the 1,439 private rental homes are managed by Get Living London, aims to improve the prospect of renting a home by ensuring there are no fees or hidden costs, allowing tenants to secure longer commitments, which also come with more benefits, and offering a direct relationship with the team who also work
weekends to ensure tenants’ requests and enquiries are swiftly met. Thanks to a partnership with Wayne Hemingway MBE, homes come with designer furniture, installed in advance along with free fibre broadband. On the outside, local sporting facilities are, without exaggeration, world-class, with the Olympics’ Velodrome and Aquatics Centre open to the public, while parklands and meadows offer valuable open space.
