“It’s how people dress in their days off that is most intriguing” – Alexander Wang

f you read one feature this issue, make it Charlotte Phillips’ interview with explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE on page 32. This season he is starring in the new Belstaff campaign, showcasing its adventurous wares (stocked at Tessuti) and having a great time doing it. It is, as he says, “a good antidote” to the dangerous situations he usually finds himself in, and gave him the opportunity “to work with some great people”, among them photographer, Rankin. I find his honesty refreshing, and a reminder that fashion doesn’t have to be elitist or isolating, or anything other than fun or practical, as clothes for the new season arrive in the shops for the first time. As seen on the front cover, Sir Paul Smith is another wise gentleman sharing his take on style for this issue. The brand he has spearheaded for more than 40 years sells around 100,000 suits a year, so he knows a thing or two about how to wear one. You’ll find him dressing his own tailoring down with a chambray shirt, T-shirt and white leather trainers and – for those stuck in the office – signature bright socks. Melissa Emerson hears more mottos and anecdotes as he squeezes our interview into a working day that begins at 6am (p.18). On page 44, Mariya Dykalo lends a female perspective on the world of fashion in the month that we celebrate International Women’s Day (8 March). Dykalo has given Aspinal of London a reputation for statement tote bags as much as sleek diaries, and welcomed an army of young, of-the-moment collaborators to drive the brand forward. Frivolous? It’s similarly young, of-the-moment ambassadors that marketing experts tell me are making £50,000 per post, and increasing consumer engagement by 25 per cent. Join the debate on the cult of social media endorsement on page 85.

Its homeware department has since grown into a much larger collection. Hailing from Amsterdam, the delivery service works via subscription. Customers choose one of three sizes, and choose how regular they’d like the delivery to be – weekly, fortnightly or monthly – and all flowers come in carefully designed vase-ready arrangements. A specially designed transparent vase – one tailored for each of the three bouquet sizes – can be added to each initial delivery, for a guaranteed perfect fit. With flowers coming direct from the growers that the company works closely with, freshness is Bloomon’s top priority and the natural-looking bouquets also follow seasonal changes. Meet...Paul Smith:

suits you,sir Despite decades at the helm of his business, Sir Paul Smith CBE is as involved as ever, both commercially and creatively. From catwalk collections to collaborations, his expertise and eclecticism are here to stay WORDS: MELISSA EMERSON

A

cting as both designer and chairman of his eponymous brand, Sir Paul Smith CBE has been at the forefront of the British design industry for more than 40 years. Proud of his tortoiseover-hare approach, his commitment to building a reputation and product offering steadily, has taken the business from strength to strength.

“Not just a master of tailoring, he has numerous collaborations to his name” Now numbering 14 different collections – spanning menswear, womenswear, accessories and homeware – the Paul Smith influence on lifestyle trends is tangible and other brands have often sought to share his creativity. Not just a master of tailoring, he has numerous collaborations to his name, putting his stamp on the iconic Anglepoise table lamp and Berry Bros. & Rudd wine labels,

and creating a one-off version of the archetypal British vehicle – the Land Rover Defender. Not one for shortcuts either – he’s a very early riser to boot – every Paul Smith shop has its own unique character. The Canary Wharf store, which opened in 2014, sports pastel shades, a curated mid-century furniture collection with pieces sourced from around the globe and photos from Sir Paul’s own travels displayed in the windows. In spite of his traditional experience and techniques, this season’s womenswear collection was inspired by ‘independent minds’ with sleeveless jackets, extreme lapels and bias cut skirts subverting classic cuts. A new edition of ‘A Suit To Travel In’ has also launched for men. The unlined, breathable and creaseresistant cloth makes it ideal for those on the go: if anyone can successfully re-invent the suit, it’s Sir Paul. Paul Smith, Cabot Place

on his career path... “I don’t think I could choose just one defining moment: I’m most proud of my consistency. Since I opened my first shop in Nottingham over 40 years ago, the business has grown steadily. There’s never been a breakthrough moment, which I think is why there’s never been a breakdown moment either! ‘Never assume’ has always been my motto – it just means always double-check everything and it’s saved both me and the business from a lot of scrapes.”

on never staying still... “I’m very lucky in that I’m constantly travelling. I have staff all over the world with showrooms in New York, Milan, Paris, Tokyo and, of course, London. I love the diversity of being in a different place every week. Relax?! What does that mean? ur ‘A Suit To Travel In’, which is made with all natural fibres and is crease resistant, was designed for people who are on the go all the time.”

on tailoring... “Our tailoring, both for men and women, is extremely popular – I sell in excess of 100,000 suits every year. I trained under a ceremonial tailor when I first started designing my own clothes in Nottingham and he taught me all the fundamental rules of making a beautiful suit. My wife Pauline was also trained as a couturier so a lot of what I know about proportion and details comes from her. My suits combine these two backgrounds – great classic foundations but with a touch of really exceptional details.”

on getting up in the morning... “I swim every morning at around 5.30am before I go into work and that’s pretty much the extent of my grooming. I’m not really the type! I then get to the office around 6am and have two hours to spend time in my studio, listening to music and catching up with everything. Time to think – that’s one of life’s best luxuries.” Photograph of Paul Smith by Kate Peters, katepeters.co.uk

CANARY WHARF | 19

on designing for all... “The great thing about Paul Smith is that we dress everyone from seven year-olds to 77 year-olds, as well as doing lots of collaborations and special designs. I approach every design completely differently but try to make sure everything is well-considered and has a detail or element of the unexpected. I think people would describe my taste as ‘eclectic’ and I believe the key to style is confidence.”

“I approach every design completely differently but try to make sure everything has a detail or element of the unexpected” on styling A SUIT... “When it comes to suits you have to feel comfortable. I wear a suit more or less every day but usually in quite a casual way. I often wear a plain T-shirt, a chambray shirt and white leather trainers with mine for example. A great simple suit is an essential. For on the go, our ‘A Suit to Travel In’ has a great cut and can be worn casually with a T-shirt and trainers or more formally with a crisp white shirt and a tie.”

on picking favourites... “I always struggle to choose favourite designs as it depends on my mood, but we’ve been working very hard to develop a new collection of small leather goods, inspired by the pattern on the façade of my shop in Mayfair at No. 9 Albemarle Street. The pattern is embossed onto beautiful leather in lots of different colours to add the Paul Smith touch. Bright Paul Smith socks are also perfect for injecting a bit of a colour into your daily uniform.”

on branching out... “We’re a leading and uniquely British brand and we mix up one-off antiques with high-quality tailoring: the chair you sit on when you buy a suit is for sale and we can wrap the suit and have the chair waiting for you when you get home. I’ve been drinking Good Ordinary Claret and Good Ordinary White wine from Berry Bros. & Rudd for many years. Berry’s is a real institution with a great history so it was also great to be asked to design a special label for them.”

on what comes next... “We’re going through some very exciting changes at the moment. We’re simplifying the structure of all of our collections and focusing on designing beautiful clothes that really have a feeling of Paul Smith. I’ve been doing this job for a long time, but have never wanted to stand still. Fashion is about today and tomorrow, and I’m constantly curious to see what’s around the corner.”

uxury is becoming more personal, and so too is David M Robinson’s flagship Canary Wharf boutique. Having undergone a significant refurbishment, the Jubilee Place store has reopened to feature enlarged Patek Philippe and Rolex spaces, as well as new areas dedicated to Panerai and IWC. From a small workshop in Liverpool, David M Robinson has evolved into one of the very few British jewellery companies to design, manufacture and retail many of its own exclusive ranges, available in its six stores across the country.

“Should clients wish to peek inside the world of the watchmaker, or spend time with our expert goldsmiths, they can,” says managing director John Robinson. “People are often genuinely interested in talking to experts who create with their own hands using skills passed down through many generations.” David M Robinson’s own jewellery collections remain exclusive to its showrooms. TH E BR EMONT ALT 1- C WILL L AST YOU A LIFETIME. POSSIBLY LONGER . The Bremont ALT1-C is a mechanical aviation chronometer that’s 99.998% accurate. It’s painstakingly built by hand at our workshops in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England. But if the inside of the ALT1-C is delicate, the outside is anything but. The case is made from steel that’s seven times harder than you’ll find in ordinary watches. (We bombard it with electrons to toughen it up.) The crystal is sapphire and scratch-resistant. (We know, we’ve tried.) And the whole thing is water resistant to 100 metres. We hope you enjoy the ALT1-C. After all, you’ll be together a long time.

JEWELLERY Jewels, gems, pearls and diamonds; essential components of any jewellery collection WORDS: OLIVIA SHARPE

Viva Vivianna David M Robinson has long been an admirer of master Copenhagen jeweller Georg Jensen and it is therefore proud to announce that it is now the exclusive Canary Wharf stockist. The brand’s full collection can be found here, including the timeless Vivianna collection, which was first inspired by the famed female silversmith Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe and today comprises a selection of minimal pieces in 18-karat gold and sterling silver featuring semiprecious stones. Make sure to keep an eye out for the latest collections that will be dropping into the DMR store from April after their debut at Baselworld – the prestigious annual watch and jewellery fair. Top of the Game Before becoming the founder of one of the leading French fashion houses, a young Christian Dior spent his childhood playing games in the gardens of his hometown of Granville. Jewellery designer Victoire de Castellane has once again chosen to capture this idyllic part of Christian Dior’s history in her latest collection, christened Granville. Made up of 12 unique pieces, each one tells the story of childish outdoor games with a vivid rainbow of coloured stones: green beryl, peridot, aquamarine, tanzanite, chrysoberyl, pink tourmaline and rubellite all play lead roles. Romancing the Stone The story of Tiffany & Co’s now world-famous diamond engagement ring, the Tiffany Setting, begins with the American jeweller’s founder, Charles Lewis Tiffany, who set out in 1886 to create a ring that highlighted the beauty of brilliant-cut diamonds. 130 years and countless proposals and film appearances later, he certainly succeeded in his mission. Fittingly, Tiffany & Co. has chosen to mark this impressive milestone with a year-long celebration. This will involve a brand new campaign which, rather than relying on models or celebrities as endorsements, will instead feature the company’s skilled artisans who are responsible for the rings’ creation. INSIDE SIHH 2016 From high jewellery ladies’ watches to one-of-a-kind feats of innovation, SIHH did not disappoint WORDS: RICHARD BROWN

I

n the rarefied world of luxury watches, few brands are independently owned. Rolex, Patek Philippe and Breitling remain autonomous. The rest of the big boys are owned by huge parent companies. Each January, the brands held by the Richemont group showcase at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, or SIHH, which takes place in Geneva. Amid the abrasive and the kitsch, the haughty and the heinous, these were the timepieces that most stood out in 2016. And yes, the prices are real. We checked.

Ladies’ watches Panthères et Colibri, POA, Cartier

Secret Heart, £64,000, Roger Dubuis

Limelight Stella, £24,500, Piaget

s lu x urylon d on . co . u k s

Black Velvet, £44,600, Roger Dubuis

Dragon Mystérieux, POA, Cartier

Lady Arpels Ronde des Papillons, £89,500, Van Cleef & Arpels

When it came to ladies’ watches, the majority of efforts at SIHH 2016 were geared towards women of a considerable spending power. Roger Dubuis welcomed guests with a red carpet reception and its Velvet Diva collection was designed to turn heads, but it was the more understated creations within the range, particularly the Black Velvet (£44,600) and Secret Heart (£64,000), that shone the brightest. High jewellery timepieces stole the show at Cartier. The diamond-scaled dragon on the brand’s Dragon Mystérieux (POA) wraps itself around an hour and minute hand seemingly suspended in midair, while the Panthères et Colibri (POA) possesses a crown that, when pushed, ushers out a young panther.

“Piaget’s timepieces were a more pared-back affair” Piaget’s timepieces were a more pared-back affair. The elegant, quartz-powered Limelight Gala (from £27,700) is set with 62 brilliant-cut diamonds and is available with either a white gold or pink gold Milanese strap. If mechanics mean more to you, then the Limelight Stella (from £24,500) is equipped with Piaget’s in-house, automatic Caliber 584P movement. The watch’s moon phase indicator requires one correction every 122 years. Finally, no-one could deny the beauty of Van Cleef & Arpels’ Lady Arpels Ronde des Papillons (£89,500). From under a collection of layered, mother-of-pearl clouds, three butterflies emerge to display the minutes of the hour. Delicate, delightful and, at 38mm in diameter, not too extravagant.

ONE TO WATCH

Best in Show

This month Sandy Madhvani, Showroom Manager at David M Robinson in Canary Wharf, selects his watch of the moment:

Among the hordes of celebrity ambassadors patrolling the show, the following stars proved to be the real showstoppers Parmigiani Fleurier’s Tonda Chronor Anniversaire, £103,000 Parmigiani Fleurier’s Tonda Chronor Anniversaire celebrates the brand’s 20th anniversary by including the company’s first in-house integrated chronograph.

Audemars Piguet’s Supersonnerie, CHF520,000 Thanks to three patents, eight years of research and 478 parts, AP has created the most clearsounding minute repeater of all time. It chimes with absolute purity and also houses a tourbillon chronograph.

MB&F’s HM6 SV, £300,000 The HM6 SV comprises a flying tourbillon and 11 pieces of sapphire crystal – one of the most difficult materials with which to work – there’s no denying MB&F as the ultimate master of the avant-garde.

“IWC’s beautiful Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days will run precisely and reliably for a full eight days before it needs rewinding. The flagship of the Portofino collection, this is a stunningly elegant piece for any dress-up occasion” Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days, £7,900, IWC Available at David M Robinson, Jubilee Place, Canary Wharf

Value for money For watches that won’t require remortgaging the house, look towards Montblanc, Cartier and IWC. Cartier’s Drive was something of a sensation. Bolstering what is already Richemont’s biggest brand, the completely new timepiece was a lesson in masculine watch design. The vintage-inspired pieces feature a cushion-shaped case and come equipped with an in-house movement. The watch is expected to fly off shelves in June. Equally buzz-worthy was IWC’s Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII. A return to its roots, with its uncluttered dial and ergonomic design, the watch will find favour among IWC purists. The Mark XVIII is 40mm in size and you can opt for either a black or silver dial. Pilot or not, at £3,190, it’s a handsome investment. Continuing to evolve under the stewardship of CEO Jérôme Lambert, Montblanc presented the Chronométrie Collection Twincounter Date. Powered by a brand new Montblanc movement, the 40mm piece has a 38-hour power reserve and is water-resistant to 30metres. Smart, sharp and sporting a selfwinding, in-house calibre, the watch is a snip at £2,155. Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII Edition ‘Le Petit Prince’, £3,190, IWC

Van Cleef & Arpels’s Midnight Nuit Lumineuse, POA Spread across the diamond-set dial of the Midnight Nuit Lumineuse is the Unicorn constellation. Six of the stars light up. Powered by an electro-mechanical movement, it’s something that has never been seen in watchmaking before.

Fashion Don’t be FOOLED

T

he Californian desert was chosen as the backdrop to the spring/ summer campaign of COS; with the brand telling us that its minimal setting enhances the effortless shapes of the new collection. The thing about COS however, is that its pieces never do quite look ‘effortless’. Effortless is something we only pretend to want, after all. We want to look like we’re wearing expensive tailoring, even if pieces are designed to skim the calves and drape over the shoulders in a relaxed fashion. We want to look like our wardrobes need drycleaning, just because our shirts are an innocuous shade of cream and taupe. The label tells us the look is ‘freespirited’: it’s anything but. Perfect workwear was born at COS, after all. Its creases are delicate folds, its linen cloth pristine, and its cosy jumpers not meant for cuddling up in, but for meeting the parents. This is faux nonchalance at its very, very best. That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun in a COS wardrobe. You only have to look at the details in the latest pieces to know that the COS woman is a little bit of a rebel: the asymmetric hem enlivening a plain A-line skirt, the soft tones and feel of a sundress made grown-up with a teasingly low back. There’s also a beautiful camel cutout dress in the range that’s as highnecked and elegant as it is quirky and architectural. The COS man is just as much the silent type: casual trousers softening navy sweaters and button-down collars; never too smart, never too casual. The ‘effortless’ spring/summer look? We’re not buying it. It’s well thought out – but we’re buying every piece. COS, Jubilee Place

French shoemaker J.M. Weston was inspired by the late French artist Yves Klein for the new edition of its Le Moc’ Weston loafer. Designed to be worn barefoot, the bright, saturated blue is a shade Klein was renowned for using in his monochrome paintings. In homage to the artist who died at the age of 34, specialist tanners worked alongside the curator of the Yves Klein Archive to meticulously translate the shade onto the luxury leather and calfskin fabrics used to construct each pair. Only 1,500 pairs of this artisan limited edition will be on sale from March. jmweston.fr

the classics updated For its S/S16 collection, Crockett & Jones has redeveloped its Truro trainer style. Admittedly it’s still more of a shoe than a trainer – a comfortable one at that – with its chunky but lightweight rubber sole; the blue burnished calf provides the best contrast with the brown sole. Its English Oxford collection has also had a subtle makeover with new blue and grey burnished calf leathers in the Edgware and Westbourne styles. Crockett & Jones, Cabot Place

life & times of fiennes

Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE is a quintessentially British intrepid explorer, Marathon des Sables runner and charity fundraiser. Now, at the age of 71, he explains why he’s adding style star to his resumÊ as told to: charlotte phillips

D

espite being ‘somewhere up a mountain’ and not particularly easy to pin down, famed explorer successful author, and charity fundraiser Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE, found the time (and the Wi-Fi signal) to tell Canary Wharf about his new project: a collaboration with British clothing brand Belstaff for its latest campaign, what keeps him inspired and how he spends his free time (hint: it’s a rarity).

“M

y proudest achievement is being happily married for 38 years to my wonderful late wife. Breaking world records, beating our international rivals and working as a team is something that I continue to be proud of. My initial motivation came from needing to make a living and using the skills I had acquired after leaving the Army: I left school at a young age and the Army provided me with the opportunity to be responsible for many of the young soldiers; I taught them how to ski, canoe and climb, while we waited to be called upon should the Soviets attack. After being released from the Army, I had to make a living so thought it was best to use this natural skillset.

“Belstaff is steeped in history and it has a spirit of adventure in everything it does” Although I never got to meet my father and grandfather, I often feel they are watching over me during expeditions, giving me the motivation to keep going. As an expedition leader you need that motivaton. I always have a sense of wanting to make them proud through my work. When Belstaff came to me with this opportunity, I thought it would be a new challenge. Its British heritage was certainly a draw factor; Belstaff is steeped in history and it has a spirit of adventure in everything it does, which I admire. It’s a very authentic, wearable brand. Standing in front of a camera is not a natural thing for me, but when they explained I’d

be working with a famed photographer, Rankin, I trusted it would work. A lot of what I do can be very dangerous, and this seemed like a good antidote to that and the chance to work with some great people. It was wonderful to work with a true professional: Rankin knew exactly which angles to shoot to get the best results. It was all executed quickly. I can’t be sure I have a style, other than dressing for the elements that I’m in. Style to me is suitability for the activity at the time. The boots in the campaign, for example, I felt I could wear anywhere from the desert to the snow, and the Belstaff Roadmaster waxed cotton jacket is also ideal as it’s waterproof, lightweight and comfortable to wear. Comfort is essential when you are trekking for many hours every day. Another expedition essential is Anthisan [medical cream], as it can stop an irritating itch in its tracks. This is key when you are travelling in all sorts of climates. Also, your team is vital, so you must make sure you choose the best people to have around you. You depend on them with your life. I am lucky enough to have seen many wonderful places in the world. I don’t have any free time at the moment – being an expedition leader you don’t get the usual weekend breaks – but for many years I have enjoyed going off to north west Scotland with my wife and friends and going exploring off the islands in rubber boats. Would I have done a better job at playing James Bond than Roger Moore? I was in the audition process and got down to the last six out of 200. The director Guy Hamilton obviously thought Roger was better suited to the acting role. I think we both went on to be in the fields we should have been. I have no regrets.” Belstaff is stocked at Tessuti, Canada Square belstaff.co.uk Right: Hollywood Stuntman Riley Harper in the Belstaff campaign

shoes to suit your skin tone

Photography by Sofia et Mauro

Christian Louboutin first launched its Nudes range in 2013 with four different shoe styles and is now extending the collection to suit further skin tones – with porcelain and deep chocolate shades. Crafted from a softer material than the originals – matte nappa leather – these shoes have less of a sheen and so blend in better with skin tones. As well as the new shades, the Solasofia style also joins the range for S/S16 – a classical ballerina flat with a pointed toe. Christian Louboutin, eu.christianlouboutin.com

Rocha’s monochrome is the easiest to replicate thanks to Karen Millen.

The most delicate detail of the season, ruffles were the icing on many a S/S16 gown. Sheer fabrics created soft, flowing silhouettes at Gucci and Francesco Scognamiglio while Mary Katrantzou took a more structural approach – all in romantic shades of red, pink, white and blush.

COLOURS

Aspinal of London is now known for stylish totes as much as handsome journals, and its colour-loving creative director Mariya Dykalo is responsible. WORDS: GABRIELLE LANE

s lu x uryl o nd o n . c o . u k s

feature

I

’m surprised that Mariya Dykalo grants me an interview. Yes, the creative director of Aspinal of London must be aware that the brand’s Canary Wharf store is thriving, but the designer does two things that are relatively unheard of in fashion editorial for this issue: she agrees at short notice (turning our content around in two days to be precise), even though it means answering my questions while she’s on holiday. And she doesn’t skip a single topic, even when I ask about feminism, commercial decision-making and other subjects that would usually be off a PR agenda. Born in Ukraine, Dykalo landed a position at the brand in 2006, off the back of a Masters at The Lviv National Academy of Arts in her home country. It’s a course that educated her in both Ready-toWear clothing and accessories design, and today she admits that garments and footwear are “absolutely” something she’d like to bring to the brand. For now, married to an Englishman and settled in the countryside, she’s risen up the ranks in-house overseeing an offering distinguished by leather goods: In 2013 she was placed at the Aspinal artistic helm, having mastered styles including the best-selling Marylebone tote (a carry-all that comes in finishes such as alabaster lizard skin and brown hair calf – and charges your phone). Formerly known for traditional accessories and gold-leaf diaries, such designs have arguably drawn a more fashionable crowd to the stores under her watch, with marketing gurus seizing the opportunity to align her work with socialites and creative types such as Olivia Palermo, and Yasmin Sewell of Être Cécile, who have both leant their names to limited-edition versions of its best-loved

accessories, in recent seasons. Arguably, there’s a philanthropic motivation for these collaborations – proceeds from Palermo’s style were donated to ADCAM, the community development and sustainability charity – and this season, the brand will launch a blue-heart printed design with Beulah London, in support of the UN campaign against Human Trafficking. For her part, Dykalo seems positive about wellknown faces now working with the brand. “It gives a new perception of Aspinal as a brand and that can potentially bring new fans,” she explains. “Olivia Palermo [for example] is a global style icon so I was thrilled that we could work together for ADCAM.” On a day-to-day basis she begins with the brand’s core values and is guided by feedback from its merchandising team. “I love British culture and want to embrace it with each collection,” she says. “We have regular feedback sessions with our retail and online teams to understand the insight they receive directly from customers. We always design with a commercial product in mind, but often inject something different or a new ‘wow’ colour for press to pick up on. My personal taste does influence me in some decisions and I certainly have my favourite bags, but it’s all about balance. “There’s always a pressure to create a bestseller; the new it-bag. Some designs become an instant winner and some have a slower start. The Marylebone Tech tote became a bestseller and a press favourite, but we have other styles that we think will be a commercial hit but they just don’t take off in the same way.” Dykalo loves bright colours. lizard effect, and this season has overseen a collection based on vibrant English gardens. “Our mood for spring/summer 16 is very imaginary, fresh and natural,” she says. “It features colourful brights alongside textured metallics and beautiful silk prints. We bring florals bang up to date by playing with interesting shades and leather combinations. Bright orange and grass green are key colours, painted onto the existing and new handbag shapes.” Just one week before our interview, fellow British brand Burberry announced that it would be retailing its new styles straight from the catwalk, ending the three- or four-month wait for products to arrive on counter, and leading the fashion industry to question the future of ‘seasonal’ collections: it’s a buy-now, wear-now approach, and something Dykalo doesn’t disregard for Aspinal of London. “We launch new collections at London Fashion Week, but never rule out instant launches of specific bags if we feel it would benefit the business and our customers’ demand,” she says. At present? “Aspinal has 80 per cent of its products in continuity, and injects 20 per cent of newness each season, bringing new colours and shapes.” With International Women’s Day taking place

46 | CANARY WHARF

on 8 March, I ask her if she thinks being a woman makes it easier when designing products for other women. “Having a working woman create bags for others, certainly makes a difference. We can fully understand what is required of the end product,” she agrees. “Women work hard, often juggling having families at home. I love International Women’s Day: in the Ukraine, where I am from, on the 8 March every woman will receive a beautiful red rose. I do think that the business world without women would be very boring! Women bring charm and balance to the workplace.”

“I love British culture and want to embrace it with each collection” To this end, three of her favourite four fashion labels are publicly headed up by women. “I admire Stella McCartney for simplicity and innovation, Roksanda Ilincic for great design and beautiful use of colour, Valentino for femininity and Miu Miu for vintage style and detailing.” As for her own career, she wouldn’t change a thing. “Every decision I’ve made I’ve been really happy with the outcome. I spent a lot of time studying, and more than nine years working in art and design, which seems like a lot but I learnt so much. It’s an important part of a journey that allowed me to pick up new skills and inspirations.” She signs off: “I’m very lucky, fashion is my passion.” Aspinal of London, Cabot Place

Traditional micro-needling techniques can be both painful and require recovery time, but the microchannels caused by the patches heal quickly, enabling daily use for a four-week period. The technology is now being tested for medical uses such as pain relief and glucose management. Radara system, from £199+VAT, radara.co.uk

At this stage, reports suggest the Body Compass could monitor the execution of movement, weight loss and muscle gain as well as heart rate, body temperature – and even thirst – via a smartwatch. coming soon, samsung.com

La Roche-Posay’s My UV Patch generated headlines after its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. Transparent and adhesive to the skin, the flexible patch – which is half the thickness of an average strand of hair – contains photosensitive dyes and changes colour to indicate the level of UV exposure. La Roche-Posay hope the technology will increase safety in the sun, following its research findings that only 12 per cent of British respondents wear protective creams throughout the year. RESTAURANT REVIEW

Join the club

Latte lovers and egg enthusiasts, rejoice: London’s breakfast scene is thriving, and Canary Wharf’s The Breakfast Club is the best of the bunch

Y

es, we know: getting out of bed on a rainy March morning is challenging. But fear not – The Breakfast Club is a game-changer, with a buzzy atmosphere, relaxed décor and menu options aplenty: If the fluffy stacks of pancakes and cool American diner vibe doesn’t motivate you, then absolutely nothing will. As the team descend on a particularly grey Friday, The Breakfast Club is the busiest we can imagine a restaurant being this early on in the day, with something of a party atmosphere enhanced by the music (think mellow, old-school rock at volumes generally

“If the cool American diner vibe doesn’t get you motivated, nothing will” heard at 6pm, not 9am), glitzy lighting, and the knowledge that it’s open until midnight from Thursday to Saturday for everything from cocktails to burgers – it doesn’t just serve breakfast, you know. The restaurant is named after the 1985 cult film and its style extends to blue banquette seating, vintage glassware and exposed brickwork; it’s fair to say that it’s as far from a boardroom as can be. As with all currently fashionable

restaurants in London, eggs and avocado are prominent menu features, the former perfectly poached and the latter prevented from being bland with a twist of chilli and lime. The Breakfast Club has built its reputation on frying up the contents of a hipster’s fridge and assembling them into towers – expect salty chorizo, hunks of halluomi and feta, fresh smoked salmon, and lots of spicy peppers in burritos, on rye bread and generally just layered onto the plate, gloriously. The bacon (sides are encouraged) is crisp, and the sausage sandwich is comfort food at its best when served with a home-made chutney, cheese, a field mushroom and bloomer bread for good measure. Although, a word to the wise: ‘filling’ is an understatement. Food arrives quickly, with efficient staff obviously used to Canary Wharfers facing pressing deadlines, but even more pressing rumbling stomachs. We leave over an hour later, vowing to come back for dinner, or one lunchtime, or to try the restaurant’s bottomless brunch offer. Handily located a couple of doors down from spinning chain Psycle, we’re even planning a spin class followed by breakfast as our new early morning routine. Optimistic, yes, but what can we say? – The Breakfast Club has put a spring in our step. The Breakfast Club, Crossrail Place

ight now, in London one culture feels incredibly fashionable. Guess which? Hint: It’s influencing what we eat, wear, and decorate our homes with. As you watch Borgen, enjoy toasted rye bread and snuggle into your Acne Studios leather jacket, you’re buying into it. Yes, if experts are to be believed, a Scandinavian-style renaissance is generating income in London of more than £300million per year. What defines Scandinavia? “Healthy living, closeness to nature, political stability and equality, and high-quality products and design,” says Dr Mart Kuldkepp, lecturer in contemporary Scandinavian history at University College London (UCL). And now, “there’s a certain ‘coolness factor’ characterising many of Scandinavia’s prevalent images.” Our ‘Scandi’ obsession is partially due to 2008’s financial crisis. Fatigued by the idea of greed and over-consumption, “People began looking for a simpler, back-to-basics approach, that was less commercial and less about consumption,” says Michael Booth, author of The Almost Nearly Perfect People: Behind the Myth of the Scandinavian Utopia. “Scandinavia offered that approach to life.” It’s also partly due to increased exposure: a recent spate of Nordic literature and TV series’ like Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Bridge and The Killing mean we’re hankering after onscreen Scandi offerings like chunky jumpers, beautiful scenery and, says Booth, a “fresh, clean, functional

From food and interiors to fashion and reading material, it would appear that Londoners can’t get enough of Scandinavia. Where has this trend come from, why the obsession, and is it here to stay? WORDS: charlotte phillips

aesthetic,” that we’re trying to replicate at home. The Scandi interiors look tends to be pared back and minimal, with muted tones and clean lines. “It’s an economy of form without decoration, using natural materials such as wood, wool and hide with a feel for ‘low consumption’, centred on just the right products: those which are essential,” says Robert Hasty, store owner and buyer for popular interiors store Ligne Roset, which works with Scandinavian designers such as Dögg & Arnved Design Studio and GamFratesi. “As well as offering visually light and airy solutions to interiors, Scandinavian-inspired interiors also blend elegantly with many styles of furniture allowing its user to adapt to his personal decorating tastes,” Hasty adds. This adaptable, minimalist approach is popular with Londoners who have to maximise small spaces and Danish brand Tiger, of Crossrail Place, is one company capitalising on our new-found fondness for a life without clutter. “We take functional products and turn them into fun, emotional ones,” says Tiger design and marketing manager, Emma Bier. “Light coloured wood and natural colours and materials are a strong theme at Tiger in both our products and the design of the store interiors.” Hotels, too, are in on the act: boutique London hotel The Boundary opened in 2008 and gave each bedroom a particular design theme, one of which is the ever-relevant Scandi. Sir Terence Conran, who oversaw all aspects of the hotel, has spoken of the peaceful and cheerful vibe it projects, particularly praising the “Finn Juhl-designed Poeten twoseat sofa, the Arne Jacobsen Egg chair and Marimekko’s blue poppy design fabric.” Scandinavian style is pervading cuisine too.

The founders of restaurant group Sticks’n’Sushi are halfJapanese and half-Danish, and they’ve merged the two culinary and aesthetic traditions for a menu, which focuses on the quality and simplicity of dishes. “There is always a feel of the Scandinavian within the brand, whether this in our Danishdesigned chairs or lights, our reading material in our bar/lounge, or our food,” says Sticks’n’Sushi managing director Andreas Karlsson. Nordic food is low in carbohydrates and high in protein, tapping into today’s health and wellness zeitgeist. It’s also often locally and sustainably sourced, a perfect match for London’s ‘farm to table’ trend; the antithesis of pre-recession elaborate meals. Think a smorgasbord of traditional pickled herring, dark rye, healthy crispbread and smoked salmon. “Our soy marinated salmon is similar to the popular Nordic dish gravadlax, and we use

CANARY WHARF | 65

ingredients widely seen in Scandinavia but not Japan, such as mustard and dill. Similarly, we use liquorice in some desserts, which is hugely popular in Denmark and Sweden,” explains Karlsson. Food and interior decoration are not the only areas where Scandinavians veer towards simple and pared-back choices. So too, beauty, which to be unfussy, as encapsulated by of-the-minute Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen, the face of HUGO WOMAN fragrance. “I wear moisturiser with SPF, as it’s important to take care of your skin,” she says. “I try to stay hydrated and drink lots of water, but, “I like to keep things quite natural. Less is definitely more.” This same attitude is found in fashion offerings, where the look is relaxed. Clothes tend to blend style with comfort. Scandinavian fabrics look chic, but are often durable and waterproof, and chunky wool knits, down jackets and clean lines are abundant. Again, Beha Erichsen sets an example: “My style is quite simple. I tend to wear the same kind of uniform – lots of blacks, olives, and greys.” COS’ S/S16 collection particularly embodies

“Scandinavian-inspired interiors blend elegantly with many styles of furniture”

Scandi style: neutral, naturalistic colours (sand and stone feature prominently), good quality fabrics and immaculate cuts. The collection focuses on effortless drapes and folds and smart, original dressing: “Functionality takes on new form,” says COS’ S/S16 promo material, referring to an apron dress that can be worn several ways, attached across the back or front, or with the

“We began to realise they knew a thing or two about living the good life” apron hanging loose, and it is a “crafted yet somewhat organic approach.” So does erring towards simplicity work? By and large, Scandinavians are content with their lives. Denmark regularly tops happiness polls, perhaps as high taxation funds a strong welfare state with a “cradle to grave” ethos, and the family unit is seen as paramount – there’s excellent paternity and maternity leave and a good work-life balance is prioritised. “We have begun to realise they know a thing or two about living a good life,” says Booth. Really, it’s no wonder we’re emulating the Scandinavians. As for where the Scandi trend is heading: “It shows no signs of calming down,” says Kuldkepp, explaining that it’s not the first time Britain has been obsessed with Scandinavia. “Just look at the decades before the First World War. If history is any indicator, it is subsequently going to return at some point.” Time will tell. And for now, something truly fabulous would have to come along to topple Scandinavia from its culture-setting throne – make that a chic, minimalist, and durable throne, of course. Art is long, LIFE is SHORT

History buffs rejoice: Prague has Baroque buildings and Gothic churches in abundance, as well as oodles of charm. But more surprising are the modern gastronomical offerings and luxury hotels WORDS: beverley byrne

CANARY WHARF | 71

A

n architectural Sleeping Beauty, Prague woke from a turbulent past with its historic buildings and centuries of culture intact. Spared during the Second World War and cut off from the West under communism, it is now one of Europe’s best preserved historic capitals. Its ravishing pot pourri of treasures, including fairytale Prague Castle, St Vitus Cathedral and the Old Town Square with its medieval astronomical clock and lively cast of musicians and performers, remain traditionally seductive. But a refreshing avant-garde vibe permeating the Czech Republic’s capital adds a new dimension to its charms. Apart from the legendary nightlife, proof that Prague is far from a city pickled in aspic can be found in its oldest quarter, Malá Strana. The word ‘láska’ (love) dominates the colourful graffiticovered John Lennon Wall in leafy Kampa Park. A symbol of rebellion during communist rule, the

the city’s more conventional statues, such as the saints mounted on the Charles Bridge, its the contemporary artistic statements that lend the city a somewhat unconventional edge. Across the Vltava river, Frank Gehry’s futuristic Dancing House, nicknamed Fred and Ginger, stands controversially amidst the medieval spires, stately cupolas, ornate facades and graceful bridges. Vaguely resembling a pair of dancers, eyebrows were raised when this ‘deconstructivist’ building opened in 1996. But whatever your perspective on the eccentric design, the bar on the top floor is perfect for watching the sunset behind Prague Castle whilst listening to free concerts in the park below.

“Apart from the legendary nightlife, proof Prague is far from a city pickled in aspic can be found in its oldest quarter, Malá Strana” wall – owned by the venerable Knights of Malta – is a continually evolving artwork dedicated to the former Beatle’s concerns for world peace as well as free speech and non-violent revolution. Nearby, a trio of giant bronze babies with creepy imploded barcode faces are a slightly unnerving addition to the city’s public art collection. Created by Czech artist David Černý, the surrealist tots guard the entrance to the ubercool Kampa Museum modern art gallery. Not far from here at the foot of Petřín Hill, a group of seven bronze figures by sculptor Olbram Zoubek, unveiled in 2002, represent a Memorial to the Victims of Communism. A powerful contrast to

Prague’s excellent public transport system makes exploring its emerging districts easy. Head for funky Holešovice where the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, housed in a former factory, is an accessible mini version of Tate Modern. There’s more than a hint of counter culture going on in Holešovice. From progressive art galleries and ‘alternative’ workshops to the only Bitcoin café in Prague (the third floor of which is home to the Cryptoanarchy Institute), this rejuvenating urban area is reminiscent of a slightly subversive, rock ‘n’ roll version of London’s Docklands. Žižkov Television Tower dominating the fashionable Vinohrady district. Built between 1985 and 1992, this unwelcome blot on the city skyline was formerly used to block signals flooding in from the West. Gradually, it’s becoming more accepted and, in 2013, a luxury one-room hotel opened above the rather chic restaurant. Clinging to its vertiginous exterior are more of those fat Černý baby sculptures – lending a whacky twist to this infamous symbol of Prague’s communist past. Today, the only revolution is in Prague’s gastronomic world. From boutique restaurants such as La Bottega, serving scrumptious Italianinspired fare to Field, a farm-to-fork modern Czech cuisine phenomenon featuring home-grown ingredients arranged as art on a plate, the city’s culinary star is in the ascendant. Spices at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, featuring authentic Asian cuisine, is also at the heart of Prague’s gourmet spring. Hidden amidst the piazzas and palaces, parks and gardens distinguishing Malá Strana, the hotel is a stone’s throw from Prague’s A-list attractions. ou know you are close to the beach when a banana crab crashes your dance party. It’s my first night in the Caribbean and we are unwinding, Grenadian-style, which means live music, chocolate-infused martinis, pâtisserie and, did I mention men and women painted in chocolate? Apparently, the local wildlife wants to get in on the action too. Mid-spin, I spy the little creature saunter across the dance floor and I crack a wide grin that doesn’t leave my face the entire trip. Later on, under a luminous moon in the evening warmth, I amble along the beach to my hotel room. A chorus of chirruping frogs – competing in their

own concerto – accompanies me. Waves lap at the shoreline and the air is thick with the scent of tropical flowers: the clichés of Caribbean life are good ones. I have the pleasure of staying at Sandals LaSource, near the island capital of St George’s, five minutes from the Maurice Bishop International Airport. Due to the geography, however, aeroplanes never disturb my beach naps, of which there are many during the course of a sun-soaked few days at the resort. Chocolate parties might not be top of your holiday agenda, but the complex is primarily a beachfront retreat and offers plenty of solitary nooks and quiet corners in which to unwind, including an idyllic sunset-viewing spot right at the

tip of a pontoon curving into the ocean. There is a separate, tranquil pool overlooking the sea, in addition to a party pool with swim-up bar and music, and if you want even more privacy, several of the suites and villas also have their own; I recommend the Sky Villas, each with their own infinity pool on the balcony. These top-tier suites also benefit from personal butlers – trained in association with the Guild of Professional English Butlers – who will take care of everything from tending to your wardrobe, to making dinner reservations to an exacting standard. The hotel’s Red Lane spa uses local ingredients as part of its treatment menu that includes a full body exfoliation using a papaya and pineapple salt mousse, a sweet coffee and sugar scrub, a Caribbean seaweed wrap and a sugar cane warm oil treatment: all are designed to soothe the strains of daily life away and condition the skin. Of course, there is an even better way to completely escape the frenetic pace of London life: scuba diving. Even if you’ve not tried it before, I heartily urge you to grab a snorkel and give it a go here, with PADI-certified instructors. The experienced watersports team are in their element whisking aqua-enthusiasts off on snorkeling trips to dive its world-famous Underwater Sculpture Park, littered with hauntingly beautiful statues; or the Bianca C shipwreck, a 1960s Italian cruise liner circled by sharks and the odd manta ray. Reef dives also promise the excitement of spotting nurse sharks, moray eels and barracuda lurking among the thriving coral – just avoid those fang-like teeth. Sandals resorts include any diving expeditions along with the necessary equipment – up to two trips per day for those with experience or an introductory course for beginners – in all guest packages, and other activities include paddleboarding and wind-surfing. If you prefer to stay firmly on dry land, however, tennis and beach volleyball are also included and for those taking the competition seriously, instructors are on hand for tips and tricks. When it’s time to replenish all that well-spent energy, the resort has ten different restaurants to choose from. Spanning a variety of world cuisines, you can opt for sweet treats in its French-style pâtisserie, Mediterranean seafood with a sea view or indulge in a hearty New York strip steak at the à la carte Butch’s Chophouse – surely the first steakhouse to be found under a thatched roof. The

flaming Teppanyaki style of cooking at Japanese restaurant Kimonos is also quite the spectacle while private, candlelit dinners on the beach or terraces can be arranged on request. Traditionally, however, dinner here revolves around richly-spiced curries and freshly caught fish. Grenada is known as the ‘spice island’ thanks to a tropical climate, which encourages all manner of crops to grow in its verdant rainforests. It’s one of the world’s largest exporters of nutmeg, and the local markets of St George’s are great places to explore and purchase goodies to take home. Further afield, the picturesque Annandale Falls offers a good photo opportunity at the end of a gentle stroll through the well-tended local vegetation. If you’re feeling more energetic, thrilling 20-minute hikes through the rainforest to see the Seven Sisters and Honeymoon Falls are also recommended, when with a guide. For all its restorative moments, Grenada never loses the essence of rum punch-fuelled fun: All that is left for me to tell you is that no crabs were harmed in the making of this feature.

SUMMER From stylish eateries to art galleries, Sydney is cosmopolitan, sunsoaked and glamorous – but, yes – it pays to begin a visit by viewing its legendary Opera House from up high

I

WORDS: CLARE VOOGHT

f you’re going to go to Sydney and see its Opera House (sydneyoperahouse.com), you could walk around the harbour. You could hop on a ferry. But the best way to see it is with the setting sun behind you, while attached to a safety harness on top of the 134m-high, steel Harbour Bridge. The surprisingly gentle walk up the 83-year-old bridge is a threeand-a-half-hour round trip (bridgeclimb.com) and offers 360-degree views, past the harbour to Circular Quays and the central business district

skyscrapers; out to Sydney’s suburbs including the affluent Kirribilli where the Australian PM lives; and almost to the famous Bondi Beach. Most eyecatching, of course, is the enormous Opera House. Designed by a Danish architect, built using glass from France and opened by Queen Elizabeth II, it reflects a wealth of European influence in the city, while Pacific influences are found in the cuisine and native personality. Sydney is an incredibly outdoorsy place, with ample greenery such as the Botanical Gardens and

Hyde Park, with over 340 days of sunshine per year on average. There are ample beaches, and our pick is Palm Beach, with its golden sand. The weather and watersports mean Sydney’s cultural offering is often forgotten, but isn’t lacking. The Museum of Contemporary Art (moca.org), an impressive Art Deco building, hosts constantly changing exhibitions by Australian and international artists, and showcases key pieces of Aboriginal art. The city has the Vivid Light Festival each winter, while summer sees the Sydney Festival. As for fine-dining, a favourite is MasterChef’s Peter Gilmore’s brainchild Quay (quay.com.au), for its spectacular view and fresh ingredients. Also recommended is The Gantry (thegantry.com.au) – try the Posh Salad, made with quinoa-hazelnut, artichoke and pomegranate, so named because it was created by Chris Irving, former personal chef Penthousee at The Darling

for ex-Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. A day-trip north of Sydney to the beautiful Hunter Valley wine region means tastings at cellar doors such as Tempus Two and Ridge View, while the Blue Mountains (their blue haze caused by the oil from the eucalyptus trees) offer beautiful trails. After an active weekend, be spoiled back in the city at Spa Q (spa-q.com/au/sydney) where treatments include mood-dependant options such as ‘like a boss’. We chose the ‘jet-lagged’ massage, which completely alleviated travel fatigue. Need a room? Sydney isn’t short of luxury hotel offerings. Notable is centrally-located The Darling at The Star in Pyrmont. The boutique hotel has a sleek design, fabulous beds and Moroccan Hammam chambers. After heavenly massages and lingering in the blissful relaxation room, I struggled with leaving the hotel’s cocoon, much like I struggled to leave this beautiful, sunny city itself. Rooms at The Darling start from AUS$350 (approximately £167.84) per night, thedarling.com/au

ledge for Parity is the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, an annual focus on equality between the sexes, and the social, cultural and political achievements of women, that culminates in various events across the world on 8 March. International Women’s Day was first acknowledged by the UN in 1975, but has been celebrated on a smaller scale since 1911. This year, individuals and organisations are being asked to publicly commit to equal rights and reward in the workplace for men and women, by indicating their support online on the International Women’s Day website, and by initiating workplace schemes that support skill development and recognition. In 2014, the World Economic Forum warned that it would take until the year 2095 to achieve equal pay, irrespective of gender, across the globe. One year later, it revised this prediction based on what it considered to be slowing progress, and suggested the gender pay gap would not close until 2133, highlighting the need for action. Obstacles theorised by International Women’s Day include unconscious bias, cultural factors, and the need for leadership roles, opportunities and access to career skills workshops for both genders. The events taking place around the world on 8 March include science, technology and engineering networking days, gala lunches with motivational speakers, art exhibitions, careers fairs and debates. internationalwomensday.com

BUSINESS business

Shifting attitudes In light of the recent ONS employment figures, more UK businesses need to embrace project outsourcing, say Gibbs S3, a hybrid workforce solutions provider. Currently, many businesses hire shortterm contractors, which, due to the inefficient nature of the system, leaves many highly skilled individuals out of work. It believes, rather than paying fees to work with recruitment agencies, companies should outsource projects to consultancies. Professionals working for the consultancy would have more job security, and businesses would save time. gibbs-s3.com

This year brands will increase their budgets for influencer marketing by 59 per cent: plying free goods to manipulate the social media posts of our networks. Unethical and ineffective, or ingenious? We ask the experts WORDS: gabrielle lane

Who’s that

girl F

irst, a confession: I am not a natural social media user. I wrote my dissertation on the negative impact of online social comparison for the prevalence of anxiety and depression, in between being poked, pinged and all-round plagued by glossy images online… and posting some of my own. Fast-forward to my editorship of Canary Wharf magazine, and in December 2014 marketing guru Phillip Dyte told me businesses had to become part of the loop: “When it comes to social media, the biggest mistake for a luxury brand would be to ignore it. Social media is about people. We still befriend the friends we wish to; it is still intrinsically about our personal networks and our experiences. What could be more exclusive?” He was right, of course. But what he didn’t foresee (or tell me, much to my bank manager’s

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

disappointment) is that a little over 12 months later, a small number of users – capitalising on how much brands wanted to infiltrate their personal networks and inspire their friends’ purchases – would be charging £50,000 for the privilege. And that’s a fee to appear in just one Instagram post, by the way. In February, market intelligence firms, Fashion and Beauty Monitor and Econsultancy co-published a report that revealed that just under 60 per cent of the 348 strategists from the leading brands they spoke to, would be increasing their spend on activity with so-called Social Media Influencers this year. That is to place products and personal recommendations in the status updates and photo feeds of people like you and I, on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. “Word-of-mouth marketing has always been powerful; the concept is as old as marketing itself. But today this word-of-mouth has got enhanced reach thanks to digital platforms,” explains Priyanka Mehra-

feature

Dayal, content marketing manager of Fashion and Beauty Monitor. “Those who have leveraged digital platforms to successfully build a community of people who listen, who follow and who respond to their word have become influencers, and their opinion outweighs the glossiest of ads.” So, can anyone with enough social media friends become an influencer? No, says Laura WardOngley, founder of FabTrade, a company that in three years has generated more than £10m worth of business by pairing brands with a new breed of online personalities – bloggers, vloggers and tweeters among them. “It’s not a numbers game,” she declares. “It’s about a combination of quality online content and a targeted audience. For fashion brands you’re usually looking at users who have upwards of 50,000 followers, but for brands in a niche sector such as art or automobiles, the numbers can drop right down and it’s much more about the type of audience who that person reaches.” In 2014, American Express handed over its Instagram account to six influencers who worked within the fashion and lifestyle industries, to show that it had a role in their lives – cue shots of stylish boutiques staying open late and exotic photo shoots being powered by financial transactions.

The cost of nurturing a relationship with a social media user... can reach £200,0000 The result? Ten million page impressions and 40,000 engagements with the brand, representing a 23 per cent increase in online traffic and awareness. “Using social media influencers is a legitimate and proven way for a brand to market its product,” declares Ward-Ongley. So where’s the catch? The Fashion and Beauty Monitor/Econsultancy report showed that 84 per cent of brands that are using social media influencers are having to manually search for the right candidates, a task complicated by an increasing number of online personalities trying to take advantage of free products and paychecks. Amid tales of invitations for launch events being returned with £6,000 invoices, one marketing insider, who wishes to remain anonymous, explains: “At the moment the rates are not consistent and in some cases you won’t know how effective a collaboration is until you try it. It can be difficult to build a relationship with an influencer

if you are referred to an agent to discuss fees from the start. Often when a brand wants to work with an influencer they want to meet, not judge someone purely on their social media persona.” Conversely, if an individual is open to endorsing brands too readily, that’s an issue too. Mehra-Dayal explains: “If an influencer endorses a particular brand one day and a rival brand the next, authenticity and trust is lost in both the influencer and brand. Marketers have to adopt a long-term strategy when it comes to working with social media personalities, so that consumers can make the association – and believe it.” The cost of nurturing a relationship with a social media user over one or two years, is high. Ward-Ongley estimates that fees for a marketing campaign of several posts from a user with a high level of engagement from their followers, can reach £200,000. But she’s adamant that being paid for posts is ethical and transparent for a user’s followers. “The advertising industry is heavily regulated. If an influencer is being paid to do a sponsored post, they have to declare it on there. Underneath the post it will say ‘#ad’ or ‘#sponsored’.” What is sometimes less clear, is that social media influencers working with brands are often gifted free products in hope of securing coverage, which could also be seen as promotional. For Ward-Ongley this is unsurprising. “That is happening, but it’s not a bribe. Giving someone a sample so they can write about it is a simple public relations model. The leading influencers are transparent and the ones we work with are scrupulous; if someone offers to send them something they don’t want to talk about, they’ll say ‘no’.” Other marketers remain sceptical: “If a luxury brand becomes overexposed through gifting it may be harder to convince consumers to buy items at their retail price,” says our source. However, the fact remains that the right partnership, executed in the right way, is driving sales. Seventy-seven per cent of marketers surveyed about activity with social media influencers, considered their investment to be effective. “[Social media] is a 24-hour day job and the people at the top of their game are meticulous about the content that they are producing,” says WardOngley. “There’s a perception that these users live a super fun, frivolous life – and that’s true – but they offer access to hugely engaged audiences on massive scales. That’s why brands are so interested.” fashionmonitor.com; fabtrade.com

What’s Mine is yours

But hands off my bonus! Are income bonuses received after marital separation still regarded as matrimonial property? The picture is far from clear

LEGAL issues Y

ou may remember the case of Wright –v- Wright [2015] where the husband varied downwards his maintenance obligations to his ex-wife. The case attracted much media attention because the court roundly criticised the wife for having not made sufficient attempts to maximise her own earning position. She claimed she was looking after their ten-year-old daughter. The court disagreed, saying many women with children work and she had no right to expect an income for life from her ex. I am sure thousands of hard working men and women across the country cheered in agreement. The issue of spousal maintenance has become increasingly difficult and reform is urgently needed. One of the proposed statutory amendments is that spousal maintenance should not exceed a term of five years unless “serious financial hardship” is likely. Judges are varied in their approach to postseparation bonuses. In the case of Rossi –vRossi [2006], it was suggested that the payer (let’s call him “husband”) will validly argue that he earned the bonus after separation without the support of the spouse, and that he should therefore keep it. The wife would, however, counterclaim that the husband’s

ability to earn was generated during the marriage to which she had fully contributed. To square the circle, the judge in Rossi found that a post separation bonus received more than 12 months after separation could be less likely to be regarded as matrimonial property and was therefore less likely to be shared. Somewhat differently, in the 2007 case of H –v- H, the judge found that the contribution made by the wife would continue to have some effect for a while after separation and that she should, therefore, receive a share of the husband’s additional earnings/bonus after separation. The court approved a “run off” approach over three years: namely 1/3rd of the husband’s income in the year of separation; 1/6th the following year and 1/12th in the final year. In the important case of H –v- W [2013], the court recommended two budgets in cases where the husband has a significant discretionary element of income. The first budget would be for ordinary/basic expenditure to be largely taken from the husband’s basic income and the second budget would be for additional/discretionary items (which may vary from year to year) and could be taken from the husband’s bonus. The benefit of this approach is that

although the marital partnership had clearly come to an end, there can still be a share of the bonus which is not limited to, for example, just 12 months or even threeyears as in the case of H-v-H. Rather, share of bonus would only be permitted where strict “need” justifies it and not on the abstract basis of “sharing”. A cap on bonus income would therefore be imposed by the court so that the wife did not obtain a huge windfall for which she contributed little. The picture regarding maintenance or split of bonuses is far from clear, it is very fact specific and therefore difficult to predict. What is awaited, and indeed recommended by the Law Commission, is the introduction of a formula to calculate the amount and duration of spousal maintenance and bonuses. Until this is in place, get yourself a good lawyer. Cubitt Town’s Rain Forest Mural 10 March to 11 May

The word ‘redevelopment’ often strikes fear in the heart of those it impacts. This was the case for many residents on the New Union Wharf Estate on the Isle of Dogs – until, that is, the children from Cubitt Town Junior School (many of whom live on the estate) found themselves involved in designing a rainforest mural to brighten up 200ft of grey hoarding. Working in collaboration with Hills Partnership, East Thames and local artist Murude Mehmet, along with local residents and volunteers, they spent weekends, evenings and art lessons turning the design into reality. Residents now wake up to images of frogs, birds and many other beautiful creatures, instead of a blank grey wall. Cyclists, runners and walkers often comment on the amazing piece of work, which has become a real talking point in the community. Why the rainforest? Although the rainforest only covers six

per cent of the Earth’s surface it contains more than half of the world’s plants and species. Diverse, beautiful and ever changing, each creature and plant has a place and a reason for being, a little like red bricks in the urban environment. Johnson Controls, a business based in Canary Wharf, has financed part of the project, together with East Thames. cubitttown-jun.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Bartholomew Beal Bartholomew’s paintings explore solitary or contemplative figures, placed in settings that develop the nature of their predicament or mood. Inspired by literature, in recent work he has drawn on Samuel Beckett, T. S. Eliot and Shakespeare’s King Lear, the latter particularly poignant today as we are regularly confronted by images of ‘unaccommodated’ men, women and children, their suffering and yet their dignity and humanity. In saturated colour, composition and definition, each picture swings between blurred abstract shapes and tight figurative painting. An element of uncertainty leaves each painting to be completed by the viewer’s imagination. bartholomewbeal.co.uk

s we approach the new financial year, it seems an appropriate time to reflect on the state of the market and the reaction so far to the upcoming changes in Stamp Duty. 2015 felt very much like a year where buyers were adopting a ‘wait-and-see’ policy; transaction volumes were down and appetite became more price sensitive than in previous years. Despite this, price growth continued in the City and the City Fringe markets at a rate of 5.7 per cent during 2015. The Chancellor’s announcement of an additional levy on those buying second or additional properties has resulted in a distinct increase in stock versus 2015, with sellers attempting to secure a sale prior to the changes taking effect. However, it has by no means resulted in the flood of properties to the market that some predicted. With specific regard to Aldgate and the City markets, we have seen uptake continue to be strong in areas where buyers see comparative value versus more established areas in central London. Buyers are certainly seeing better value at the lower price points in Aldgate at the moment. Developments like Goodman’s Fields in Aldgate have brought considerable interest and capital to the area and this will certainly have a knock-on effect on surrounding values as the development progresses. Proximity to the City and links to the rest of Central London twinned with a great deal of investment in the area suggest that the likelihood of significant capital growth in the coming years remains strong, but this may be tempered by mid-term oversupply. It is likely that we will have a clearer picture of the reaction to the Stamp Duty changes in the months following April. What remains clear is that appetite will remain stronger in emerging areas like Aldgate that appeal to buyers, who, over the past year, have appeared more value-driven and considerably more conscious in picking the right areas in which to invest.

Home cinema John D Wood & Co., a London and country estate agent, secured itself a top spot on the big screen last month. Welcome Home, a 60-second commercial, forms part of the estate agent’s marketing strategy, which saw it work with Brighton-based video agency, SeeThat. The aim was to deliver content that would resonate with viewers on a very human level, while protecting the integrity and heritage of John D Wood & Co. The commercial was written and directed by Sam Widdows, who’s previously worked on commercial campaigns for the likes of HSBC and Guinness. johndwood.co.uk/welcomehome

dinner with hermÈs The late artist and naturalist Robert Dallet observed, studied and sketched animals and their habitats throughout his life, creating his own pictorial inventory of the natural world. A meeting with Hermès’ CEO Jean-Louis Dumas in 1984 was the beginning of a long-standing collaboration – launched with Dallet’s prints appearing on two scarf designs – and the collaboration continues today with the tribute Carnets d’Équateur porcelain collection. Featuring Dallet’s detailed first sketches and finished works, the pieces in white and jade green depict an array of wildlife from the Amazon Parrot to the Spider Monkey and include plates, a teapot, vases and a soup tureen. hermes.com

NEWS THE FINE PRINT Fabric creator Voyage Decoration has launched its colourful Iridescence collection of digitally printed fabrics and wall art for S/S16. The individual, hand-drawn and painted designs use watercolour techniques to depict swirling abstract and floral patterns, which are then printed on locally sourced linen and velvet in the Glasgow workshop. Colours are bright and bold with splashes of fuschia and indigo. Wall art has a matte finish on heavyweight paper and is sold by the metre in wide strips for easy wall application. Elsewhere, Voyage Maison offers complementary patterned homeware such as cushions, throws, lampshades and seating. voyagedecoration.com

A BRASSERIE BY THE BRIDGE The first flagship restaurant for Berkeley Homes’ One Tower Bridge has been announced. Caprice Holdings Ltd will open a new Ivy brasserie in the premium riverfront-facing restaurant space, which spans almost 8,000 sqft. The area will offer some of the most spectacular views of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, and boast a generous terrace overlooking Potters Fields Park and the River Thames. This follows last year’s announcement of a new, 900-seat theatre, which will be run by The London Theatre Company, opening in summer 2017. Visitor numbers are set to rise with the redevelopment of London Bridge Station, increasing from 67 million to 75 million by 2018. berkeleygroup.co.uk; caprice-holdings.co.uk

LETTINGS THOM ATKINS,

associate at Knight Frank Aldgate, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market

S

ince we left behind the slower winter months and have rushed headlong into the busy postChristmas period, we have experienced incredible uptake in both the number of properties available and also the number of transactional business taking place. The overwhelmingly positive news of today’s market is that tenancies are up 5.6 per cent on last year, with high numbers commencing in January and a strong showing running all the way up to the end of the financial year. The main negatives surround pricing; whilst asking prices are continuing to hold strong, we are seeing a clear disparity between the initial asking price and the eventual achieved price, as supply vastly outweighs demand. Two factors seem to be holding a particularly strong sway over the current rental market with a raft of tax changes forcing vendor’s hands and flushing lots of stock (and in some instances prospective tenants) to the market. Vendors uncertain of the implications of the tax changes, and buyers shying away from committing to a purchase are driving a busy and competitive market. The second factor influencing today’s rental market is a volatile economic backdrop, including continued slowdown in China and tumbling oil prices. Global uncertainty continues as companies show a level of trepidation over costs, meaning employers and employees alike are looking to reduce costs, and housing budgets remain one of the easiest ways to claw back stalling revenues. To conclude, whilst we are operating in a busy rental market, we are operating in a tough marketplace, with tenant strength reaching new heights. My advice to landlords would be to continue to strive to provide best in class properties and furnishings. The market is valuing the quality of a product over all else and the best properties are still renting well, while weaker properties are sitting among the high volumes of stock on offer.

STATE OF THE MARKET the Estate Agency Checklist JASON TAYLOR, sales director at Franklyn James Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

A

The Ides Of March ALASDAIR CARPENTER, managing director of Lourdes Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

T

lthough estate agencies may look the same from the outside, the foundations on which they are built, the mechanics of how they are run and the company ethos can differ vastly. At Franklyn James, we ensure that every property we advertise for sale looks its very best from day one, in order to draw as much web traffic as possible. We carefully word property descriptions and all of our sales properties have a range of professional photos, a detailed floor plan and an Energy Performance Certificate included, so our clients can be sure their properties will stand out from the competition. As soon as a property advert goes live it is our job to garner attention, including from the applicants who are registered across Franklyn James’ four offices. The key to achieving the best possible price for our clients is solid market knowledge translated into correct pricing from the outset and this – coupled with experienced, reliable and professional staff – is a winning formula. Having mature staff who have been with our company for a long time means they know the history of each development, not only in terms of how property values within the development have changed over time, but also in terms of who the management company is, when internal redecorations were last carried out and how quickly the lift gets repaired when it breaks down. All of this information is very valuable in assisting a purchaser to make informed decisions. A mistake made by many estate agents is that once a sale has been agreed, the transaction is then left to proceed unchecked and there is little communication with solicitors. At Franklyn James the agreement of a sale is just the beginning. We believe open lines of communication and regular, clear updates are essential if a sale is to make it through to the exchange stage. The saying ‘no news is good news’ might apply in certain situations, but when it comes to property transactions – no news is definitely no use. So, when choosing an estate agent, make sure you look at everything it has to offer. Its level of attention to detail will always impact how successful your property sale is.

he first of April looms ominously on the horizon. This is the date when the recent changes in stamp duty for those buying a second home in the UK come into force. Buyers who already own a home in the UK will then be subject to an additional three per cent on the existing level of stamp duty. I can’t help but think this is the most ill-thought-out piece of legislation that has been introduced during my 15 years of working in the property industry. In that period, I have witnessed numerous ineffective and irrelevant government initiatives imposed on the housing market, home information packs being a good example. This latest move however is, in my opinion, not only poorly thought out but also potentially very damaging. The increased levy on buy-to-let investors may well stem the tide of investment into the UK housing market but what happens further down the line when there is a tangible shortage of private rental properties? Basic economic principles determine that prices of rental properties will rise sharply. This will directly affect young people who are trying to save for a deposit on their first home – the very people the government claim they are trying to help. That is, unless they intend to impose rent control at some stage. I think the government has neglected to consider the sheer amount of revenue, jobs and industry that is created from investment into the UK housing market. Most of the property market ills could be cured by creating a regulated marketplace, as has been adopted by almost every developed country in the world. The government seem hell-bent on doing everything they can to interfere in the housing market apart from doing the one thing that they need to. Interesting times lie ahead.

AGENT FOCUS: JOHNS&CO On Home Soil As JOHNS&CO celebrates the success it has had in just two short years, the Canary Wharf team prepares for further growth with a new and improved E14 office

J

OHNS&CO Canary Wharf is moving to a brand new, bigger headquarters on Marsh Wall this spring. John Morley, founder and managing director of JOHNS&CO, spotted the area’s potential while working as head of International Sales at Ballymore and, convinced of the area’s future success, it became JOHNS&CO’s first base two years ago. The new and improved E14 headquarters will be the company’s fifth office in the capital, with another three openings planned for the coming year, in addition to offices in Singapore and Hong Kong. Present throughout east London with involvement in high profile developments such as Royal Wharf, London City Island, The Wardian and New Providence Wharf, the Marsh Wall office will strategically situate JOHNS&CO in its operational heartland and provide a central base from which to expand further. Being in the centre of London’s highest salaried postcode, it will also

be surrounded by potential buyers, landlords and tenants looking for luxury property within easy reach of the office. At just 31, Morley has positioned the company as a front runner in the luxury lettings, sales and property management markets, thanks to an unrivalled knowledge of the market in key London regeneration areas. Over the last 12 months in particular, the company has seen an increase in revenue of more than 200 per cent and the number of employees has almost doubled. Two new appointments have been particularly significant. Clynton Nel joins from Hamptons International as residential director, helping to build the business and continue its already rapid growth trajectory, while Chris Boswell, also from Hamptons International, will head up lettings in east London – one of the company’s key growth areas – to help implement a strategy for future sustained expansion.

“We are delighted to be moving into our prominent new office which will situate us in the heart of one of London’s fastest growing areas. Not only will this provide a base from which to continue our expansion, but it will position us at the forefront of London’s growth,” says Morley. The last ten years have been a golden age for regenerating under-used areas of the city, giving way to new neighbourhoods and laying the infrastructure for the creation of residential and commercial hubs. Canary Wharf is progressing rapidly, with its 110,000 strong workforce expected to double over the next two decades and property prices predicted to increase by up to 50 per cent in the next five years. Furthermore, rental yields have grown as much as six per cent in east London compared to around three per cent in areas of central London. The arrival of Crossrail in 2018 is expected to further bolster the area and magnify its already expansive transport connections – the property investment and buy-to-let opportunities are thriving. And JOHNS&CO has positioned itself right in the action. JOHNS&CO, 70 Marsh Wall, Canary Wharf, London, E14 9SL, 020 7118 0200 johnsand.co

COMPANY PROFILE: UNNA The Picture of Paradise

A life in Barbados with the sea, sun and a cocktail in hand seems hard to beat but when UNNA Luxury Resorts & Residences is involved the stakes are raised

Golf is a popular sport in Barbados, and around 50 per cent of visitors play while visiting Saint Peter’s Bay or Port Ferdinand. To help you enjoy the game a little more, top professional golf coach Nick Bradley is available at the Golf Studio at Port Ferdinand in March and April, for guests to book personalised tuition and refine their skills.

A

rriving at the airport after a long journey is a dangerous affair. The lack of sleep, swollen ankles and long passport queues can turn even the most calm person into a nightmare, even if the place they have just landed is Barbados. The team at UNNA Luxury Resorts & Residences have thought of this and are there to meet and greet guests with a fast-track airport service. They ensure that residents are the first people out of the airport and are shuttled to one of the two picturesque resorts quicker than you can say ‘rum punch’. The first of UNNA’s properties on the west coast is Saint Peter’s Bay, a resort of 57 ocean-facing apartments, ranging from $1.795 m for a 2,700 sqft ground floor three-bedroom apartment to $6.5 m for a 6,300 sqft five-bedroom penthouse. Each property, which can be rented out with help from UNNA, overlooks a white sandy beachfront and is designed with dark wood, traditional Bajan architecture and soft, plush furnishings. The penthouse apartments are the most impressive, with stunning 360-degree views from the roof terrace across the ocean and luscious green landscape of the island. The lounge area up there can be catered for by a dumb waiter that

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

Saint Peter’s Bay Pool and Beach

goes straight to the resort’s kitchens below. In the rest of the property, spacious living areas, en suite bathrooms and a neat kitchen strike the balance between homecomforts and ideal entertaining space. There is easy access to the front door via an elevator and direct access via a ‘bikini lift’ to the beach at the rear. The resort also offers a gym, private training room and a small hair salon on site, but the main attraction is the poolside Gazebo Bar and Grill which serves breakfast, lunch and supper and is a great place to meet other residents and guests. Port Ferdinand is the other of the two resorts managed by UNNA, situated nearby just a few minutes’ drive north of Speightstown. Arriving by water taxi is the best way to view the vista of these 82 residences; the turquoise waters of the Port Ferdinand Marina and the gleaming white bedroom apartments (from $2.25 m for a two-bed home to $7.75 m for the five-bedroom penthouse) resting on the harbour look like a postcard of paradise. There are two design styles available, one with dark wood hues and marble flooring and the other with light maple woodwork coupled with neutral limestone. The latter is simply exquisite in the four-bedroom penthouse when decorated with

property

light cream furnishings and colourful paintings, and is even more impressive when lit up by the sun through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Each residence has hand-crafted coral-rendered walls, locally made oak cupboards and concealed air conditioning and four of them come with their own private swimming pools. The exterior is just as impressive, with pot plants and palm trees adorning the walkway and a berth (there are 120 in total) outside the front door. There is certainly no chance of getting bored here; the amenities are extensive. There is a modern gym, business centre, the fine-dining restaurant 13°/59°, and the Quarterdeck Bar and Pizzeria with a pool (which serves a great variety of crispy thin pizzas and Italian-inspired nibbles). And if this isn’t enough to entertain your family or guests, further around the marina is a kids’ play area next to a trickling waterfall, the Sandbox Tree Spa in a stunningly quiet leafy gully (drop a pin and you’ll hear it), as well as an adult play area with activities and golf simulator – Nick Bradley is just one of the names who come to offer residents a few tips on their game. Both sister resorts share facilities so there is never a dull moment and the UNNA concierge can also advise residents on what to do around the island. A trip on a chartered catamaran from Port Ferdinand Marina is one of the best ways to enjoy Barbados. Alternatively, try the catch of the day at local fine dining restaurants from the best seats in the house or pop down to Holetown for some luxury shopping at Burberry, Louis Vuitton or Michael Kors. Whether you opt for an apartment on the marina or the beach, it will undoubtedly be a great investment, either as a turn-key family residence or as a holiday home to rent out; Port Ferdinand

apartments are predicted to rent from $650 per night for a two-bed in the summer, nearing $2,785 for a three-bed during the peak season in winter. But the key selling point seems to be the services, facilities and support that UNNA provide, which cost an average of $2,000 a month. Staff are friendly, welcoming and extremely efficient in ensuring that everyone has the best time in the Caribbean, whether that’s trying out waterskiing, wakeboarding, jet-skiing, snorkelling or turtlewatching; a personal yoga session; a private dining experience or using the nannying services. It is so easy to get used to this lifestyle that when you lock up and leave and return to the sharp reality of London, you’ll be wondering where your meet and greet is, not to mention that cool glass of punch.

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE: AREA FOCUS: STRATFORD

Diana Alam, Head of Residential Development Sales, JLL Demand for Stratford has grown year on year. Take Unex Tower, where we recently achieved £730 psf on a unit purchased off-plan in 2012 for £430 psf. This 40 per cent increase is not uncommon and reflects the area’s great potential.

JLL is about to open a new office in Stratford, is this an area that’s showing real potential? It is four years since the London 2012 Olympics where Stratford was host to so many memorable moments for Great Britain, and there is no question that this event irrevocably changed the area in terms of its contribution to London. A post-Olympic legacy has transformed this east London ‘village’ into a shopping and leisure destination in its own right, as well as an emerging residential hotspot. The Games were won in large part because of the strong legacy programme embedded in the bid. New homes led this programme, notably beginning with the creation of London’s largest 100 per cent private rental accommodation block at East Village – the former Athlete’s Village – and the results have been a phenomenal success. Historically the area was not portrayed very positively but now, after the redrawing of the London Underground

152 | CANARY WHARF

map making Stratford station a Zone 2 location, it is acknowledged as part of central London with the axis of the capital shifting slowly eastwards. This year, will Stratford attract more investors, or owner-occupiers? And who has the most to gain from looking to buy in and around Stratford? From a residential market perspective, Stratford has clearly transformed and we expect strong demand in 2016 from both owner-occupiers and investors. The Games drove real estate investment on an unprecedented scale, anchored by lifestyle amenities. The development of new homes built in the town centre has been significant since 2008, which has brought a steady influx of new people into the community. Importantly, this is now gaining momentum. The rapid house price growth across London is encouraging people to look differently at areas they may have previously overlooked. Stratford offers some of

the best value in Zone 2, ensuring that demand for housing is set to continue. What are your predictions for the housing market in Stratford in 2016? We will undoubtedly see some strong growth in the housing market within the Stratford area over the course of 2016. Given the great level of transport and access to key employment areas such as Canary Wharf and the City of London, we believe Stratford and its surrounds will become a great option for owneroccupiers and investors alike. Looking further ahead towards 2018, Stratford is set to see some key employers moving to the area, including the Financial Conduct Authority, which will bring with it circa 2,000 jobs. This will coincide with the delivery of London’s new Crossrail underground system which is set to revolutionise transport throughout London. JLL’s Stratford office is opening in February 2016. jll.co.uk/residential

INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO

Prestige Property As we approach the end of the financial year, now may be the time to consider investing in property. This month, Galliard Homes, CALA Homes and Barratt Homes, put forward three notable new builds, which all promise to yield sizeable returns.

THE STAGE Galliard Homes and Cain Hoy, alongside other joint venture partners, are redeveloping the original 2.3 acre site of William Shakespeare’s Curtain Theatre, where it is believed plays such as Romeo and Juliet and Henry V were first staged. The theatre’s sunken remains will be unearthed and showcased in a public square at the centre of the development. In contrast, the 37-storey residential tower is strikingly modern, and offers 412 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and

four-bedroom duplex penthouses. Lifestyle facilities include a business centre with boardroom, screening room, 24-hour concierge services and a Sky bar and terrace on the 32nd floor. Residents will also receive a complimentary three year fitness club membership. The Stage launches on 17 March from the marketing suite at The Viaduct, Fairchild Place.

LANDMARK PLACE

Barratt London’s prestigious new development is situated in the heart of the City on the north bank of the Thames. Its two interconnected buildings, due to complete in 2018, will be a mix of 165 one-bedroom suites, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses. The Private Residents’ Club allows for entertaining with a lounge and cinema room, while private gardens and a health suite with a 20-metre swimming pool, jacuzzi and steam room are ideal

for relaxation time. Its prime riverside location means that over 80 per cent of the buildings are made from glass to maximise views. Interiors have been inspired by The Barcelona Pavilion – an early example of architecture’s Modern Movement constructed from glass, steel and marble.

MILLBROOK Park CALA Homes has opened its newest show home at its North London development, Millbrook Park, for the final phase of sales. A townhouse spread over three-storeys with a garden at the rear, it showcases the larger three- and four-bedroom houses that are available on the development. Alongside these, the site also offers 65 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Larger than average windows offer particularly bright rooms while clever storage solutions allow the flowing spaces to remain uncluttered. The properties are set within 14 acres of park and open countryside – with private and communal gardens – but despite the leafy surroundings, the development has easy access to Mill Hill East underground station. Other local amenities include a golf club and equestrian centre.
