ou might not have thought it to look out the window, but spring is in full swing, and in the spirit of new beginnings, we speak to two of the acting world’s most celebrated stars as they prepare to take on their next roles. Damian Lewis, who gained international recognition after his turn as Nicholas Brody in Homeland, is about to embark on a starkly different role as a self-made billionaire playing the financial system in New York in his new drama (p.18). Clémence Poésy, meanwhile, is about to reprise her role as Elise Wassermann in Sky Atlantic’s The Tunnel. D

amian Lewis is somewhat enigmatic. A well-respected British actor (he was awarded an OBE in 2014), he’s attractive, but doesn’t fall into the pretty-boy category, and he maintains a sense of easy likeability despite his often gritty roles. Lewis is playing self-made billionaire Bobby Axelrod in new TV show Billions, a man conflicted by the trappings of greed and power that come with newly acquired wealth. Lewis is no stranger to portraying complex characters, you need only look at his turn as Nicholas Brody in Homeland to see how he thrives in this type of role. For Billions, Lewis worked to get to grips with all facets of Axelrod’s character, incorporating the good, the bad and the ugly. “His self-belief and confidence is appealing... and the way in which he epitomises the rise of the working man and prescribes in some way to the American dream is attractive to people. He comes from a background of fire chiefs, nurses and police, an Irish blue-collar background. And I think it’s appealing that he is married to a woman of his own background. Malin Åkerman, who plays my wife is staggeringly beautiful, but she is not a trophy wife. She’s someone that he’s known

for most of his life and she comes from the same sort of neighbourhood,” Lewis tells me. The actor is thoughtful and obviously intelligent. Educated at Eton College, he also attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and believes in researching a role thoroughly. When preparing for Billions, he started by reading around the subject. “I can recommend Investopedia to the starter investor, also Andrew

There’s lots of literature out there.” Then, he spent time with some seriously successful “hedge fund billionaires”, looking for common psychological behavioural traits, which, he says, was “pretty enjoyable and helpful.” Naturally, playing a successful financier and reading around the subject must lead to thoughts of one’s own portfolio; but Lewis is already set up on that front and disarmingly modest.

“I have some investment and I don’t think anyone would take my meagre sums of money into their hedge fund. I have a typical layman’s portfolio which is a little bit of moderate risk, a little bit of greater risk, something put aside for my kids, the usual stuff.” Lewis has two children: a daughter, Manon, aged nine, and a son, Gulliver, aged eight, with his British actress wife Helen McCrory. Lewis and McCrory sound reassuringly normal. When we ask Lewis what he would do with Axelrod’s billions, he responds quickly, in much the same way as you or I may when asked to spend fantastical sums of money, without the jaded, blasé air that so many in his position could easily adopt. “A jet. I’ve been on a private jet only two or three times in my life and it’s one of life’s great luxuries. You arrive at a small airport that looks more like your sitting room and are offered a cappuccino, while your bag is whipped from out of your hand and then just ten minutes later you’re asked to step onto the plane and then you’re off. And it’s just totally terrific.” Should aviation purchases fail, or if there happens to be enough cash left over, there’s always the option of buying Liverpool Football Club, of which Lewis is an avid supporter. “Liverpool FC could do with a bit of help, so yeah, why not?”

“I’ve been on a private jet only two or three times and it’s one of life’s greatest luxuries” Axelrod is a serious Metallica fan, and the band appears in the first season. Lewis admits he’s a fan, but his tastes sound somewhat eclectic. “We filmed a scene with Metallica, which was just fantastic… When I was 15, 16, a lot of my friends were walking around with Metallica and Iron Maiden jackets and I think I was doing a bit of that. But there was also a bit of Bill Haley thrown in and quite a lot of Supertramp, if I remember – which is the other end of the musical spectrum.” Perhaps the person who most appreciated Lewis’ encounters with Metallica is his son. “I met Lars Ulrich a couple of times previously,

Clearly not adverse to taking risks, Lewis has made a series of intelligent choices in his career, leading to him winning both a Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe Award. But what did he enjoy most about working on Billions? Lewis cites the cast and crew, who are “A-listers through every position and that makes it just a great, enjoyable thing to be part of.” The second highlight is working in New York. “I had doubted it was still a great city having been there a lot in the mid-’90s and knowing that it had been somewhat, tamed, shall we say, by Giuliani and Bloomberg, but it is still a great city; it’s still one of the greatest cities.” And when fans ask Lewis if he thinks Axelrod would vote for Donald Trump in the forthcoming US Presidential elections, his answer gives little away: “he might.” On a micro level, politics and political attitudes trickle down to how people approach the TV show itself. Asked if Axelrod is a villain or character to be supported, Lewis’ answer is considered and well thought-out: it needn’t be one or the other. (“That’s a simplistic view, isn’t it?”) “I think it depends on how conservative you are. A more liberal viewer enjoyed and supported Brody in Homeland and a more conservative viewer thought he was just an outright terrorist and was to be condemned. So, it sort of depends on the personal politics, with a small ‘p’, of the viewer, I think.” Among travel and politics, another interest of Lewis’ is music. Fans of Billions will know

and he was kind enough to give a pair of his drumsticks to my son, who is a drummer. So that’s pretty cool.” Lewis is perfect for the type of large-scale, internationally acclaimed shows he’s currently starring in, and he’s acutely aware that he’s lucky to be acting in a time where so much is possible. “Premium cable TV has had a golden age for the past ten to 15 years. TV sort of changed, becoming more global, less parochial, less provincial. It started to follow a film model, with film directors and writers [and actors] filming… all over the world. It suddenly just became a more global enterprise, more like film. “What they’ve been able to do – because you have 12 hours to tell a story, rather than just over two – and what they’ve done very well, is have these more complex, ambiguous characters and heroes who are flawed and anti-heroes who you

want to like. I think both Bobby [Axelrod] and Chuck, who is Paul Giamatti’s character, occupy that territory.” Along with changes to the industry have come changes among viewers in terms of how we choose, consume and access our content. Lewis is happy with the current status quo, and optimistic about the future of the television medium. “It’s a great time to be working in TV. Its ambition and what it wanted to achieve has changed. If the younger generation aren’t reading novels any more, they’re watching 60 hours or five seasons of one of these types of dramas.” “It’s very exciting to be working in it. I feel very lucky that I just came of age, as an actor, at a time when there was this sort of tectonic shift between film and TV. Classic styling and modest case sizes were back in vogue as smart-watch chit-chat fell mostly silent

Aero GT, Bell & Ross Supercar-super-watch tie-ins are nothing new. See Hublot’s LaFerrari and Parmigiani Fleurier’s Bugatti Super Sport. But Bell & Ross has gone one better. The French-Swiss watch brand famous for its square-faced timepieces has designed a supercar. Upholding its aeronautic roots – the brand’s wristwear is inspired by instruments found in cockpits – the Aero GT takes its design cues from a fighter jet. Thanks to a 4.2-litre, V8 engine, the company says the car will do 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and top out at 314 km/h. Unfortunately it remains a concept. Thankfully, the brand also remembered to launch some watches. The BR 03-94 Aero GT chronograph and time-only BR 03-92 Aero GT are both square, skeletonised affairs. Big Bang MECA-10, Hublot Hidden among the customary sports star ambassadors wheeled out by Hublot – Alan Shearer included, bemusingly – was a watch almost lost amid timepieces the brand was more eager to shout about. Strange, given that the Big Bang MECA-10 presents something we’ve never seen before – a power reserve indicator in the form of a rack-slide at 12 o’clock. The skeletonised Meca-10 was designed to look as if it’s been partassembled from Meccano. A brand new movement offers a 10-day power reserve that can be tracked via a jumping indicator at six o’clock, in addition to the sliding saw-like component at 12. Like it or loathe it, the watch deserved more airtime than a weird and overchoreographed Q&A with a former Newcastle United striker. £15,000 titanium, £16,600 ‘all black’ version, Watches of Switzerland, Canada Place

Superocean Héritage Chronoworks, Breitling Mercedes has AMG; Breitling has Chronoworks. Just like the German car manufacturer’s engine-tuning division, the Swiss watchmakers’ new department was established to improve performance. Chronoworks’ initial project was the Breitling Caliber 01, the brand’s first in-house-produced movement. By employing lighter materials (silicon), reducing friction (through ceramic) and equipping the movement with a slimmer and longer spring, Breitling has increased the calibre’s power reserve from 70 to 100 hours: a gain of 45 per cent. The first model to house the new Breitling 01 Chronoworks movement is an appropriately souped-up, all-black version of the Superocean Héritage, which sports a matte ceramic case, a transparent caseback and a superb new woven rubber strap. One of the most miniature came from single-hand specialists MeisterSinger, whose new Phanero range is just 35mm in diameter. The Carl Brashear Limited Edition, Oris In commemoration of Carl Brashear, the US Navy’s first African-American diver, Oris has presented its first bronze watch. Cosmograph Daytona with Cerachrom bezel, Rolex Rolex, the world’s most accurate mechanical watch mass-producer, is now more accurate than ever. As of 2016, the brand has announced that its Superlative Chronometer Certification will apply to its entire production line, guaranteeing that every single timepiece that leaves Rolex HQ will lose or gain no more than two seconds per day. No other watchmaker can make such a promise. Watches are status symbols and nothing says ‘boss’ quite like a Rolex Daytona. Stainless steel models currently command waiting lists that stretch to up to five years and

the latest Cerachrom bezel model looks set to do the same. So, what’s new? Materials, mainly. The watch remains 40mm in diameter and continues to be powered by Rolex’s Caliber 4130. It’s the bezel, made from Rolex-modified ceramic, which will excite Daytona devotees, harking back, as it does, to the black plexiglass-bezel of the original 1965 model. Cerachrom is corrosion resistant, virtually scratch-proof and impervious to UV rays, meaning that it will keep its colour however long you leave it in the sun. Presage 60th Anniversary, Seiko Seiko practically owns the quartz watch scene. So much so that it’s easy to forget that the Japanese giant’s electronic empire was built on deep-rooted mechanical foundations. Seiko made its first mechanical watch in 1913. In 1968, it created Japan’s first ‘hi-beat’ timepiece and became the first brand to put a vertical clutch and column wheel system into an automatic chronograph. In 2014, Seiko’s Hi-Beat 36000 GMT was named the best watch under £6,000 at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève – an awards ceremony more colloquially known as the Oscars of the watch world. This year, Seiko announced the global roll out of the Presage 60th Anniversary Automatic Limited Edition Chronograph (previously only available in Japan). The extremely stylish timepiece is 42mm in diameter and waterresistant to ten bar. Two editions are available: 1,000 pieces with a black lacquer dial; 1,000 pieces with a white enamel dial. The brightest jewels that shone through the halls of Baselworld

High Time Baselworld demonstrates that watchmaking and jewellery design do not have to be considered two separate disciplines. Graff captured our attention once again with the release of The Princess Butterfly timepiece. The delicate, winged creature has been sculpted in blue sapphire pavé with tapered baguette-cut sapphires on the edges, along with brilliant-round diamonds to mark the centre. Despite being unapologetically ostentatious, there is more to this piece than meets the eye. Capturing the insect’s metamorphic nature, the high jewellery bracelet transforms into a timepiece through a mechanism that, when pressed, causes the wings to fly apart, revealing a hidden watch. This year, Chanel allowed women access to the rarefied and exclusive world of high watchmaking complications with the launch of its first Première Flying Joy de Lumière Ricochet Tourbillon for ladies. Alternatively, timepiece, Boucheron true watch enthusiasts will prefer

the skeleton version, limited to just 12 pieces. The timepieces are the result of a masterful collaboration between Chanel and Swiss watch mechanism-maker, Renaud & Papi. For those who still prefer all-out decadence, the house unveiled three new high jewellery secret watches, the most impressive of which was the Signature Grenat featuring a 39.9-carat cushion-cut garnet. Finally, American jeweller Harry Winston got our vote with its My Precious Time – an apt name to convey the Art Deco white gold diamond brooch-cum-timepiece, based on the historic gentleman’s pocket watch.

Season’s greetings The use of floral motifs in the world of fine jewellery is historic. From Chanel to Dior, the flower has become a signature symbol for many jewellery houses. Spanish jeweller Carrera y Carrera looked to the legendary story of the garden of the four seasons to create its latest collection, El Retiro. Divided into four sections, spring is represented in blossoming floral pieces in warm pastel shades, comprising pink sapphires, chrysolites and orange sapphires. In stark contrast, the iciness of winter is conveyed in the geometric Iceberg ring, featuring a dramatic blue topaz offset with diamonds. Also looking to the past was Greek designer Nikos Koulis whose collection Eden recalls the Art Deco jewellery designs of the 1920s, as well as referencing the Garden of Eden. With time being a natural preoccupation at Baselworld, it is unsurprising that watchmakers are similarly influenced by the changing seasons when it comes to their designs. Folli Follie paid tribute to its recognisable floral motif through this year’s twist on the brand’s staple Santorini Flower watch collection. The versatile new design enables you to change up your watch strap to another colour or a ceramic bracelet. Graff also unveiled its Snowfall timepiece. The ordered scattering of 278 diamonds in an intricate lattice design reflects the falling of snowflakes.

The interplay between jewellery, art and fashion has increased dramatically over the last century. For instance, this year’s Basel saw the exciting collaboration between Georg Jensen and the now late Zaha Hadid. Located in Hall Two, the impressive installation designed by the architect for the show housed the eight-piece capsule collection. Each piece masterfully reflects Hadid’s ground-breaking designs, fusing her signature sculptural forms and fluid outlines with Jensen’s minimalist aesthetic. Flying the flag for Greece, Michael Pelamidis similarly looks to the world of architecture, as well as organic forms, for inspiration. The dramatic Transgenic ring explores the duality of nature, featuring a rare bi-colour quartz stone, while the Manta cuff is made from real shagreen, immortalising the stingray in jewellery form. Hermès partnered with a number of artists this year to create its timepieces. For the Slim d’Hermès Koma Kurabe, the traditional Japanese art of Aka-e painting was combined with the French porcelain industry for the first time in watchmaking history. The exquisite dial, which honours the ancient Japanese horse race, was the work of Buzan Fukushima. Highlighting the relationship between jewellery and fashion, Dior unveiled new versions of its Dior VIII Grande Bal in colours to match the most recent fashion show. Over at Harry Winston, the house took this one step further with its New York Companion. Based on the bejewelled evening bags of the 1930s, the clutch has a hidden timepiece in the clasp so busy women never miss a New York minute. SHINE BRIGHT Diamonds continued to reign supreme at Baselworld. In just ten years, Messika Joaillerie has become synonymous with modern and cutting-edge diamond jewellery. The brand’s new cosmic-inspired high jewellery range comprises six suites named after mythological goddesses. One couldn’t help but be enticed by the Calypso open choker comprising 264 graduating pear-cut diamonds, or be drawn to the radiating power of the Solena Maya necklace. Encompassing 185 emerald, triangular and pear-cut diamonds that have been aligned into the shape of a pyramid, it is a fitting tribute to the Sun God. Graff similarly reached for the stars with its new Celestial timepiece, incorporating a galaxy’s worth of sparkling fancyshaped diamonds, with individual stones illuminated by a pavé diamond halo. Forty years on from when Chopard first released its Happy Diamonds collection and the Swiss jeweller is still delighting us to this day, bringing out new versions of this classic model every year. Proving that size does sometimes matter, the romantic Happy Dreams collection includes larger stones for the first time. Sybarite proved it deserved its place in the Basel hall of fame (this is the British jeweller’s first year presenting) with its masterful jewels on display in Hall Two. Among the whimsical pieces on display, our personal favourites were the enchanting Jack-in-the-Box pendant and the true-to-life, spinning MerryGo-Round ring.

true colours The trend for coloured gemstones sees no sign of slowing down, as illustrated at Baselworld. Green continues to be popular, whether in the traditional vivid emerald hue as demonstrated at Amrapali, Jacob & Co., and Graff, or a light spring green hue (which has been selected as one of this year’s Pantone colours) reflected in Paraiba tourmalines, peridots and opals. Rubies are clearly having a moment too. Indian jeweller Amrapali released its new Manak designs set with white diamonds and Mozambique rubies that have been entirely untreated, hence their captivating pinkred shade. Speaking to head designer Tarang Arora, he remarked how the rapid depletion in untreated rubies has meant that the market for them has skyrocketed. Fabergé has a long history of using the world’s finest coloured gemstones as well as enamelling to create its works of art. The new mosaic pendant illustrates this perfectly. The house’s invisible gem-setting technique first pioneered in the early 20th century uses singlefaceted gemstones that are perfectly calibrated to ensure the overall design is flawless. Both Amrapali and Chanel also highlighted the industry’s renewed interest in garnets. Finally, ‘king of colour’ Fawaz Gruosi, founder of Swiss jewellery house De Grisogono, lit up his Basel stand with a medley of shades, including the new Boule pieces in rose gold and pink sapphires, or in pink sapphires and amber resin dropped in hot and cold water to achieve its hazy effect.

The animal motif has preyed upon the minds of fine jewellers for centuries. This year marks the Chinese year of the monkey and jewellers therefore let their imaginations run wild with their simian-themed jewels at Baselworld. Well-known for his playful creations, Italian jeweller Roberto Coin delighted us with his ‘cheeky’ take on the Chinese zodiac sign, presenting it in precious form in 18-carat rose gold and diamonds. The serpent has charmed its way into high jewellery collections for years, but the brand that is truly defined by this enigmatic reptile is Bulgari. The house’s timeless symbol was reincarnated in a new high jewellery timepiece collection, Serpenti Incantati. The snake coils itself around the case of a round watch for the first time, conveying the creature’s supple grace, and arrives in two versions: a rubellite-set with a pink gold case or a white gold diamondset (either with a satin strap or a matching bracelet). Another jeweller famed for its reptilian heritage is Boucheron, which unleashed a new rose gold version of its classic Serpent Bohème collection, along with adding other creations to its existing ark-worthy menagerie. These include the enchanting Nuri Cockatoo pendant earrings featuring an array of coloured gemstones and the Pégase high jewellery timepiece. Over at Jacob & Co., which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, the serpent reared its head once again in the Cerastes bracelet. The bejewelled interpretation in lightweight aluminium and snakeskin seductively wraps itself around the wearer’s arm, empowering her with its flashing Marquise-cut ruby eyes. The underwater world was also not forgotten about; Greek jeweller Eugenie Niarchos, who presented her brand Venyx World for the first time at the show, added new pieces to Pond ring, her Oseanyx range. Maria Kovadi Meanwhile, slightly less exotic but nonetheless magical, Maria Kovadi proved she was a big fish with her fairy-tale-inspired Pond pieces.

lémence Poésy has been a regular magazine fixture for decades, whether in glossy adverts for French designer fragrance Chloé, or papped in her everyday coveted style of ‘Parisian chic meets Dalston hipster’. Notably, she played Fleur Delacour in three of the Harry Potter films, Chloe in In Bruges, Rana in 127 Hours and Eva Coupeau in Gossip Girl. Now, she’s focused on series two of Sky Atlantic police thriller, The Tunnel. Poésy stars as French detective Elise Wassermann who once again, teams up with English cop partner Karl Roebuck (Stephen Dillane) to uncover a series of gruesome crimes and a plane crash in the English Channel and Channel Tunnel. It’s been hailed as the French version of The Bridge, a label Poésy is keen to shake off. There are certainly comparisons – both are gripping, emotionally charged and feature a socially awkward and promiscuous but brilliant female detective – but Poésy says this is where the similarities end and the show forms its own complex identity. With blonde hair tied into a messy bun, clad in a long red skirt and black faux fur Topshop jacket, she speaks softly, carefully considering each answer and stopping at one point to daintily apply lip balm. She reflects on her expansive career, what’s next for her, why she hates watching herself back, and should we really Brexit?

You seem to favour these gritty characters. Have you ever considered a lighter project? I would love to do comedy. No one ever asks me to be in comedy. I shot a comedy earlier this year and I’m still the most serious person in it, certainly not the one delivering the funniest lines. I want to take on roles that are a bit lighter. It’s about finding the right project. Have you ever been tempted to write or direct? I co-write here and there, but on very small projects. It’s quite a different experience for me, so hopefully I will see if I’m any good at it. The beauty of being an actor means you work with so many directors and you can see how they approach storytelling – they all have to deal with the same elements but have different methods. That’s changed quite a bit of the way I am on set; I used to be more oblivious but now I’m more interested in the way someone is choosing to tell something. What research did you do before playing Elise again? Well, before shooting the first series I watched all of The Wire, and this time I watched Fargo. I also talked to police officers in Paris, one of whom took me gun-shooting, which turned out to be one of the scariest experience I’ve ever had. We went to this ranch in the French suburbs, it was

really isolated and eerie. Most people in the club weren’t even police officers; I don’t know who they were. Wow, how did it feel firing a gun? Terrifying. Not my thing! But talking to police officers was interesting. They mainly talked about all the paperwork you have to do and how it’s nothing like as action-packed as it is on television. Was there any of Saga Norén (protagonist in The Bridge) that you incorporated into Elise? I still haven’t seen any of The Bridge. I deliberately didn’t watch it, Dominik [Moll, The Tunnel’s director] was also keen for me not to watch it, so that I wouldn’t make decisions influenced on her. I wanted to make her mine. I do want to see it, though.

“There’s definitely confidence that comes with getting older and being able to take more control over your choices” Do you ever watch yourself back on film and TV? I used to, but I find that very difficult now. I try to not be too self-conscious about what I look like, but until I know whether or not there will be a third series of The Tunnel, it’s nice not to see anything so I don’t start fixing things that don’t need to be fixed and so I don’t get vain about it. But you’re a model, too; surely you’re comfortable with looking at yourself? Oh, that’s OK, because they Photoshop everything! It looks like someone completely different [when I see myself in a magazine]. Modelling is just another way to tell stories. Do you feel very different in your 30s to how you did in your 20s? There’s definitely confidence that comes with getting older and being able to take more control over your choices. There are some actresses who, even from their early 20s, seem utterly confident in what they want to do and I’m in complete awe of them. I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to do, but I was always curious. I tried a few things to see whether I liked it or not. I said no to things people thought I should do and maybe I should have done.

My 20s were really fun but being in my 30s is pretty nice. I’m stronger than I was throughout my 20s, but not yet reaching mid-life crisis! You live both in London and Paris, is that strange with the uncertainty around the future of Britain and the EU? It’s very weird. It’s such a weird time for Europe in general. I’m slightly terrified. I’m certainly going to live in London until I’m kicked out! Which I might be. Who knows? How do you spend off-duty time in London? I love going to museums, though I don’t go as often as I used to. But the Hayward Gallery and Tate Modern are wonderful. I like green spaces, too. In Paris it feels everywhere you go needs a purpose, whereas in London you can just stay in a park and drink coffee. On a rare sunny day, that is. There’s a café in Victoria Park I love to go to for breakfast. Have you adopted any British traits? I love fish and chips! Especially when you film in Kent for six months. I love Radio Six, does that count as becoming an Anglophile? The Tunnel: Sabotage is currently on Tuesdays, 9pm on Sky Atlantic. British label Burberry puts the future of seasonal fashion shows up for debate, as it announces a move to align its runway schedule with the retail expectations of demanding, social media-savvy consumers WORDS: Melissa emerson

ashion appears to be having an existential crisis after an announcement by Burberry in February that it is changing the format of its runway and retail calendar. This sparked an industry-wide debate on the plausibility of the current model, which sees seasonal collections presented four to six months before they actually drop in stores. Burberry plans to reduce the number of its shows from four to two and each show will be a mix of more ‘seasonless’ menswear and womenswear. Collections would then be launched immediately online and in stores, alongside new digital and print campaigns. Following the announcement, high-profile fashion labels like Gucci and Prada and fashion bodies like the British Fashion Council (BFC) and the Council of Fashion

Designers of America (CFDA) have weighed in, the latter going so far as to commission a report from The Boston Consulting Group on the future of New York Fashion Week. However it remains to be seen whether this more consumer-centric model – giving today’s digital and social media-savvy shoppers the kind of immediate access to the clothes that they are accustomed to having to the coverage of the shows – will work, or whether differing opinions and a divided system will ultimately cause confusion. It might seem controversial but if Burberry’s history is anything to go on, it has been headed this way for some time. It was the first big brand to live stream a show online and in 3D to custom venues in 2010, and foreshadowing this year’s decision, consumers could also buy select pieces,

albeit for a limited 72-hour period. In October 2015, it also became the first to shoot and publish an advertising campaign (for Spring/ Summer 2016) live as it happened on Snapchat. Digital innovation is becoming somewhat of a hallmark for the company, so adapting the runway calendar that was designed in a preinternet era, to fit modern consumers’ habits seems to be a natural move, as Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s chief creative and CEO concurs. “From live streams and ordering straight from the runway to live social media campaigns, this is the latest step in a creative process that will continue to evolve.

The changes we are making will allow us to build a closer connection between the experience that we create with our runway shows and the moment when people can physically explore the collections for themselves. Our shows have been evolving to close this gap for some time.” Thanks to the internet and social media, shows are no longer the reserve of the press and industry insiders, and consumers being far more involved is now inevitable. “Since the floodgates of social media have opened up the world of the catwalks to an enthusiastic public there is no going back and a shift to see-now-buy-now consumerfacing shows certainly makes sense for some brands and designers – particularly those with a) their own stores and b) a celebrity-focused identity,” says head of fashion at Stylus, Emily Gordon-Smith. The CFDA’s report into the future of New York Fashion Week also acknowledged the phenomena. Burberry S/S16 “Technology and social media have rewired the fashion system as everyone knows it,” the report claims, resulting in what it calls a “decreased perception of newness” and “accelerated fatigue of trends and designs.” By the time designer collections hit stores, the market has already been saturated with high-street copycats, putting pressure on the fullprice sales of designer goods and also on the brands to be increasingly focused on the in-between pre-spring and prefall collections. Global customers are not necessarily even making such seasonal distinctions in their shopping,

so Burberry will refer to its simplified two new shows as ‘February’ and ‘September’, and as a large company – revenue in the year to 2015 was posted as £2.523bn – it has the resources to shift its production schedule and gain a competitive advantage by beating the high-street copycats and other high-end labels to the shop floor. And for all the upheaval, the brand is winning some praise for its efforts. Paul Smith S/S16 “Burberry is a truly innovative brand and this strategic move shows brilliant leadership from Christopher Bailey and his team in driving this agenda forward. A number of British brands will move to a similar model over the next few seasons,” suggested Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, but one British designer isn’t convinced. “The future for Paul Smith is more of the same. Something I’ve always prided myself on is consistency, which is very difficult to maintain when the trend is moving towards constant change and upheaval. I’ll continue to keep my head down, keep doing what I’m doing and hopefully people will keep liking it. I’m not one for revolution,” said Sir Paul Smith. Meanwhile, some other fashion houses that reject full-scale change are still making small concessions. Prada made its Pionnière and Cahier bags – as seen in the A/W16 show – immediately available in selected stores while Michael Kors made a similar move, launching a ‘Ready-to-Wear, Ready to Go’ capsule collection of looks, shoes and handbags directly after the show. “Our customer doesn’t think in terms of seasons, she

just thinks about what works for her life and what she’s in love with. I thought it would be a great idea to give her the opportunity to sprinkle some key items from the runway into her current wardrobe,” Michael Kors explained. Gucci on the other hand will persist in making customers wait six months before the show’s collections hit stores, but Gordon-Smith of Stylus sees the logic. “The idea has proved unpopular with Paris and Milan’s most established luxury Michael Kors houses who believe the shift will Collection A/W16 remove the aspirational dream from the buying process.” This aside, at The New York Times

“Our customer just thinks about what works for her life” luxury conference in April 2016, Gucci’s CEO Marco Bizzarri did announce the merging of its men’s and women’s shows. “Maintaining two separate, disconnected calendars has been a result of tradition rather than practicality,” he concluded. It was clearly another surprise twist to this debate. “It would be one thing if it all changed at once, but everyone’s going off in different directions. It’s like the wild, wild West,” commented Julie Gilhart, fashion consultant and former fashion director of Barneys New York, speaking to The New Paul Smith York Times. Gucci’s decision also S/S16 raises further questions, such as on the impact the changes will have on menswear. With heavyweights like Burberry and itself scrapping separate shows, the fear is that specialised menswear events such as London Collections: Men could take a hit. Burberry made it clear in a statement that it will work with event organisers on new ways to maintain a presence but the long-term impact, as with all of these disparate changes, is difficult to measure and only time will tell.

n a world of constantly evolving trends and fickle fads, the key to the success of any major brand lies in its power to successfully innovate. In beauty terms, this means always keeping one step ahead of the competition with inventive technologies, formulas and pigments that challenge the way we look at conventional make-up. One beauty brand that has never shied away from innovation is MAC – the Toronto-born cosmetics giant now based in New York.

Not only is MAC constantly finding new ways to garner attention with its long line of high-profile collaborations with fashion heavyweights such as Charlotte Olympia and Zac Posen, and celebrities including Rihanna, Ellie Goulding and – most recently – Caitlyn Jenner, but MAC’s in-house product development team is always working behind the scenes to break new ground when it comes to the conception and design of their collections. Nick Gavrelis, vice president of product development at MAC describes the work that goes into the creation of MAC’s make-up.

n May, Reebok Sports Club, in Canada Place, will officially re-open as Third Space. With new signage, several new master classes and a new food and smoothie bar and sports clothing shop to follow in June, the rebrand exudes luxury with a whole new redirected focus on fitness. “We are introducing a new holistic approach, offering a premium all-round experience.” Colin Waggett, Third Space CEO tells us. Scandi meets sushi It sounds impossible: food of a Nordic and Japanese blend, as pretty as it is delicious, in a buzzy, convenient location. Enter Sticks’n’Sushi

W

hat do Scandinavia and Japan have in common? No, it’s not a joke. The answer is an appreciation for minimalism and sleek design, and this blend is perfectly executed – in both form and food – at Crossrail Place’s Sticks’n’Sushi. On a grey Thursday evening (come on, summer) we’re met with a buzz. Nearly every table is full, but it’s not frenetic, and the vibe is relaxed, but staff are attentive enough to make it feel like a special dining experience. The décor is industrial chic: think low, exposed lighting, lots of slate grey and leather-topped tables.

“The vibe is relaxed, but it feels like a special dining experience” Being this close to the weekend calls for cocktails. Armed with Shojitos – a ginger-infused Japanese take on the classic Mojito – we turn to the menu. It’s vast and we’re relieved the drinks are strong: it’s through a combination of liquid courage, guesswork and seeking advice that we’re able to filter down our myriad desires. There are set menus, designed to remove the hard work for you, but

we’re hungry and refuse to miss out on anything, so off to the land of overordering we go. Our waiter staggers our dishes, so we enjoy a steady stream of sharing plates throughout the evening. The black cod and avocado roll is a particular highlight; tender and slightly unusual, and the tuna tartare, which comes with pine nuts, avocado and nori chips is another stand-out order and one which I hog more than my fair share of. The soy cured salmon is a perfect example of Nordic influences, topped with dill and red onion. Presentation is beautiful. Dishes come on grey slate, on black lacquered small plates, on wooden slabs. The arrangement of the food is often symmetrical and always aesthetically pleasing: care has been taken to ensure it intrigues rather than overwhelms. Sashimi is a must: served on ice and perfectly fresh, this is one order you

can’t go wrong with. Options include salmon, tuna, hamachi and sea bass. As for the eponymous sticks: the chicken meatballs coated in a sticky teriyaki sauce don’t disappoint, but this is less surprising than the fact that the vegetables are a feat unto themselves: the fried cauliflower with black sesame and truffle sauce is like nothing we’ve ever tasted. Were we not in public, I would undoubtedly lick the bowl. Let’s be clear: we don’t need dessert. To some extent we don’t even want dessert, which should be some indication of how stuffed we are. But of course we succumb to some of the most unusual offerings we’ve ever tried. The white chocolate and liquorice mousse (another Nordic influence) is topped with a raspberry foam for a sensory explosion: layers of flavours, all emerging and competing at once. And the dark chocolate fondant has a surprising peppermint core offset by molten caramel that is as delicious as you’re imagining. No regrets. Sticks’n’Sushi is fun. I can see myself returning with friends, for a birthday, with colleagues – it’s a large space and manages to cover all bases. The menu is big enough that there’s still plenty I want – if I’m honest, I’m having pangs of regret that our waiter (sensibly) convinced us that we didn’t need a salmon carpaccio dish. Come hungry, enjoy a lively ambience and quality, interesting dishes, and leave full. What’s not to love? Sticks’n’Sushi, Crossrail Place

he glow’ is that oh-so-elusive aura that incredibly healthy people have, whereby their skin is radiant and they seem to be lit from within. It reportedly comes largely from what you eat and drink, on the understanding that what you put in is what you get out. Of course, Jasmine and Melissa Hemsley, the sister duo storming the world of health and wellness, have it in spades. The two sisters, often uttered in the same breath as Deliciously Ella, Madeleine Shaw and Amelia Freer et al, never set out to build an entire brand around healthy living. “We’re not nutritionists,” Melissa says. “We didn’t train to be chefs, we’re just girls living in London,” – although one assumes the average 20-something is consuming more Pot Noodles than these two. For them, health and wellness isn’t just a passion, but an all-consuming lifestyle and successful business. Why? “Once you feel really great, you don’t want to go back,” Jasmine explains. “Some people are suffering unnecessary niggles and pains, and having sleeping problems. Just changing their food or exercise regime can totally change their life, without costing too much, and always for the better.” Yet so many of us are stubbornly living on cheesy pasta, partly because we’re confused about the whole thing. We see ingredients with names we can’t pronounce (baobab, lucuma, spirulina) and think that’s the only healthy route to go down. “Absolutely not,” say the glossy-haired sisters. “There’s an entire industry of health food that we don’t really rate either,” says Jasmine. “We’re messing about with food way too much in the name of health.” Instead, they’re seeking a simple, back-to-basics approach, reflecting the way our great-grandparents ate. “We’re really into fat, which gets misconstrued. People think fat is bad for you, but natural fat is really good for you! Butter, cheese, egg yolks, extra virgin olive oil – there’s real goodness in it. Fat is delicious, it’s satiating.” Another general misconception is that to be healthy, you have to eat plants, plants and more

plants. Not true, say the carnivorous Hemsleys. “We love meat, like livers and chicken skin and bone marrow.” Following the success of their first recipe book, The Art of Eating Well, the girls have released a second, Good + Simple. It touches on lifestyle elements such as mediation and travel tips, but with 140 recipes, the crux is healthy, delicious food, with a ‘give-it-a-go, how-hard-can-it-be’ attitude. “What’s the worst that can happen? You burn it?” asks Melissa. Accessibility is important to the girls – they don’t want anyone to be scared off. Case in point: Melissa tells me that a few years ago, her boyfriend’s flatmate had never cooked a meal in his life. “He worked in London Bridge and could pick up any cuisine he fancied, any time of day or night, without cooking, so he just didn’t see the point in learning.” But then one day, the story goes, “I came home and he’d bought all the ingredients for our papaya and halloumi salad and was really excited to make it. He was like, ‘why did no one tell me before that cooking was easy?’ He cooked every day for a month.” Melissa is genuinely, truly thrilled. And now? “He’s known as the chef in the group.” If you’re still doubtful that ‘healthy’ is a

They know their city-based demographic well, and they’re trying to simplify it for us. “When we write a recipe, we check to see if the supermarket stocks it, or if you can get it online,” Melissa explains. Better still, they’re freezer fans, whipping up big batches of soups and dahls and eating them throughout the week. Invest in Tupperware and you’ve got yourself a feasible end to Pret lunches. Plus, they aren’t expecting you to spend a fortune in the name of glowing skin and toxin-free insides. “We know healthy food can be expensive.

recipe: Huevos Rancheros With Guacamole Serves two • Four large handfuls of spinach, chopped • Four eggs • One large handful of fresh coriander, leaves and stalks chopped • One small handful of grated mature cheddar For the tomato sauce • One large onion, diced • One tablespoon ghee or coconut oil • Two cloves of garlic, diced • Two red peppers, halved lengthways, deseeded and sliced into strips • Two bay leaves • One teaspoon of smoked paprika • A pinch of cayenne

pepper or finely diced fresh red chilli, to taste • Two x 400g tins of tomatoes or 800g fresh tomatoes • 200ml water (100ml if using fresh tomatoes) • Sea salt and black pepper For the guacamole • One large avocado, as ripe as possible • One tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil • Juice of half a lime or juice of one whole lime, as preferred • Two spring onions or one small handful of chopped fresh chives • Handful of chopped fresh coriander leaves

1. First make the tomato sauce. Fry the onion in the ghee or coconut oil over a medium heat for about eight minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. 2. Add the garlic, peppers, bay leaves and spices to the pan and cook for another two minutes. 3. Add the tomatoes and water, season generously with salt and pepper, then stir everything together and leave to simmer for ten minutes until reduced to a thick, rich sauce. 4. Meanwhile, make the guacamole. Halve and stone the avocado, then scoop out the flesh and roughly chop. Place in a bowl and stir in all the remaining ingredients and some seasoning. Set aside. 5. Check the seasoning of the tomato sauce, adding extra salt, pepper and cayenne/chilli as needed, then stir through the spinach and cook for a few minutes until just wilted. 6. Use a spatula or spoon to make four wells in the tomato sauce mixture and crack an egg into each. The eggs will poach in the sauce and cook in about four minutes (lid on) for set whites and runny yolks. 7. Scatter over the coriander and cheese. Serve immediately (as the eggs will keep cooking) with big heaped spoonfuls of guacamole on top.

But, we love eggs, which are relatively cheap, and bones, which you can get free from most butchers to make broth.” In case you didn’t know – though it’s hard not to – bone broth, a clear soup essentially tasting like chicken stock, is the Hemsley’s “number one food.” The girls answer this interview happily and perfectly in sync, but, be honest: would you want to work with your sister every day of the week? “Of course we argue. I’m the big sister, she’s the little one. But we get on really well and we’re really passionate about what we do,” states Jasmine. “We’re building something amazing together and at the heart of it is feeling good. It’s a tiring but non-stressful job,” says Melissa. “We’re lucky, there’s not a huge amount to argue about.” The Hemsleys will be appearing at the BBC Good Food Show Summer in the City at ExCel this month (20-22 May), and amid a hectic travel schedule, they’re excited to spend time in their hometown. “We go up and down the country and we’re off to Australia and New York, but we love the idea of being in once place and having this insanely full and brilliant weekend,” says Melissa. “We can hang out, chat, and sign books.” Other chef demonstrations include Tom Kerridge and Paul Hollywood. “Loads of brilliant people.” As for competition within the health and wellness space, if you were imagining a Deliciously Ella versus the Hemsleys stand-off, forget it. “We’re all friends,” says Melissa. “It’s so lovely. Everyone supports each other, it’s the antithesis of the nineties and noughties ethos of ‘slog yourself, spend money, be mean to get to the top.’” “It’s like, ‘let’s take a chill pill, enjoy good food, give each other a pat on the back,’” Jasmine adds. When we talk about processed foods made with chemicals and sweeteners, there’s genuine horror in Jasmine’s voice. “We’ll look back one day, and say, ‘we really put those things in our food and gave them to our children?’” But the girls are optimistic about the future of healthy eating, and she’s swiftly onto a more positive thought. “In our lifetime they added those in, and in our lifetime they’re taking them away. recipe: Mum’s Philippine Beef Sinigang Serves two • 700g rib-eye steak • 1.2 litres water or bone broth • Two medium-sized onions, diced • Six garlic cloves, diced • Five cm piece of fresh root ginger (unpeeled if organic), thinly sliced • 20 cherry tomatoes, cut into halves • Three tablespoons

tamarind paste • A big pinch of black or white pepper • Three to four tablespoons fish sauce • 400g green beans, with the tops trimmed • 400g pak choi, leaves and stalks roughly chopped • Two whole fresh red chillies • 400g spinach

1. Cut the meat into three centimetre cubes, retaining the fat as it will flavour the stew. Place in a large saucepan and pour in the water or broth. Bring to the boil, then cover and quickly reduce the heat and cook at a medium-to-low simmer for 20 minutes. 2. Add the onions, garlic, ginger and tomatoes with the tamarind paste, pepper and fish sauce. Bring back up to a simmer and cook, covered, for a further 15 minutes. Taste for seasoning, adding more tamarind paste for a sourer flavour, if desired. Remember fish sauce is salty and brands vary in strength. 3. Tip in the beans, pak choi and whole chillies, then bring back up to a simmer and cook covered for five more minutes. 4. Add the spinach and remove the pan from the heat, leaving the lid on the pan to allow the spinach to wilt the residual heat. Remove the chillies and serve immediately.

A ‘slow living trip’ to east Iceland is exactly what every time-poor citydwelling person needs. It’s a chance to reconnect with nature, eat simple foods, reconfigure priorities and above all – take your time. CHARLOTTE PHILLIPS does just that

ave you ever really heard silence? No traffic, no phones, no sirens: the sort of silence where you can almost hear a buzzing in your ear, where you can scream at the top of your lungs and there’s no-one around for miles to hear, and all you can see are vast, flat plains of ice and snow. I have, but only recently: I’ve just returned from a ‘slow living’ trip to the east of Iceland, which looks like a film set, or even another planet. Frozen waterfalls become commonplace, driving alongside fjords proves to be a far more beautiful way to travel than the M25, and reindeer roam the sides of the road much like cows in the English countryside. Towns often consist of 100 people: everyone knows everyone’s name, there are 30 children at the school, doors are unlocked and – amazingly, unimaginably – no-one is hurrying anywhere. Going on this trip offers a chance to slow down, something we’re all craving, but which a typical London life of fast food, rushed tube journeys and low-level anxiety doesn’t often allow for. Stepping out of the airport at Egilsstadir, a 50-minute flight from Reykjavík, I feel myself physically relax. I mean really relax: my shoulders drop and my eyes involuntarily close as I breathe in crisp, unpolluted air. Fun fact: Icelandic people have a different concept of luxury to ours. Theirs revolves around closeness to nature, simplicity, warmth and wellness, and their hotels reflect this. Contrastingly, my idea of holiday luxury includes a pillow menu on my made-twice-daily bed and Bulgari bath products. But once I get over my initial shock, there’s something undeniably irresistible about Icelandic comforts. Expect cosy, not opulent. We spend one night in Berunes, a place that champions simplistic living with a notable lack of televisions and – perhaps even more shockingly – clocks, on the basis that we shouldn’t be in such a hurry that we constantly need to check the time. And while I smugly assure myself that I can use my phone, I find I don’t need or want to.

Food is wholesome, locally sourced and unprocessed. Barley and the root vegetable rutabaga are regular menu features, and we tuck into lots of cod and trout throughout the trip, caught fresh in the fjord that day. We try not to think about the reindeer and ram on our plates, having cooed at them wandering freely earlier. At the Egilsstadir Guesthouse, we’re treated to not just a breakfast smorgasbord of meats, eggs and cheese, but vitamin tablets prettily displayed on a silver tray. Iceland’s lack of sunlight, especially during winter, means Vitamin D supplementation is encouraged, but when we’re there, daylight hours are plentiful and bright. In this slow, relaxed environment, creativity is everywhere. People often have two jobs, one of which is passion-based: a teacher who’s an artist, a policeman slash nature excursion leader, and so on. Despite the sub-zero temperatures, there’s some serious innovation going on across east Iceland. There’s the artist hub in Stöðvarfjörður (my attempts at pronunciation were, without exception, wrong, but the locals all speak excellent English), where two women have turned an old fish factory into a multi-purpose commune, with sewing facilities, painting room, performance space, a soon-to-be-built recording studio and much more. They’re supporting an alternative lifestyle, where people work to subsist, not excessively consume; employment which also allows one to enjoy outdoor pursuits and family time. Djúpivogur (djupivogur.is) is the only Icelandic municipality to have Cittaslow status, meaning it’s part of an international hub of towns (one is in South Korea), which support eco-friendly businesses, local uniqueness and conservation of nature and cultural heritages. The notion of slowing down and living in the moment is paramount to its ethos, and indeed, across east Iceland in general. As the ‘mayor’ of Djúpivogur says to me in genuine bemusement, “Why would anyone want to cook rice that only takes two minutes in a microwave? Is that good?” It’s in Djúpivogur that we meet a man who collects large rocks brought down by rainfall.

When one catches his fancy, he brings it home, cuts into it, and polishes the volcanic, centuriesold exterior, to reveal a shiny, brightly coloured crystallised interior. When I ask why he does so, I expect an answer about geology and environmental conservation, but it’s simpler than that: “I like rocks.” In one shop, a woman named Agusta makes goods from fish skin, producing cushion covers, skirts and wallets, using locally sourced cod, salmon and trout skin dyed in rich jewel hues of reds, purples and blues. She also works with Icelandic reindeer skin and lambskin leather to make belts, throws and jackets, giving everyone the opportunity to take a small piece of Iceland home. (arfleifd.is) But my favourite use of the east Iceland landscape is at the Karlsstadir farm, where an entrepreneurial husband and wife (he’s also a musician, naturally) have turned an old cow shed into a small-scale swede crisp production factory. The duo make the crisps using just vegetables, salt and pepper; before packaging them in simple cardboard boxes and distributing them across Icelandic stores. They’re delicious, healthy and moreish. “Despite the sub-zero temperatures, there’s some serious innovation going on” Another fun revelation: Icelanders have a more elevated sense of the word ‘walk’ than we Londoners. I enjoy strolling to brunch as much as the next urban dweller, but I’m not necessarily equipped for a hike to a frozen waterfall, where everything is so breathtakingly white that perspective disappears completely. Likewise, taking 4x4 Jeeps ‘off-piste’ across plains of thick, powder snow is fantastic, but slightly terrifying, due to unforeseen dips and bits of slush, but the scenery is worth the fear factor. When doing outdoor yoga (yes, in minus ten degrees; layer up), I, the most cynical of cynics, am consumed with giddy happiness. Blame it on

the freezing fresh air or the majestic mountains and glistening snow, but I suddenly have (fleeting) thoughts about packing it all in for a life of rural simplicity. Throughout the trip, I consume so much homemade rye bread that when it comes to horse riding, I feel slightly sorry for my small, sweet horse. Icelandic horses are famous: they’re purebred, with no cross-breeding for generations. The horses have five paces – walk, trot, canter, tölt and skeið (flying pace) – rather than four, like our English ones, and trotting along a snowy path at dusk, with not an electric light in sight, is my most special memory from the trip. On departing east Iceland for a return to city life, we arrive at Egilsstadir Airport to find the tiny airport closed. It opens 30 minutes before the flight takes off, and just a first name – no passport – is needed to casually stroll onto the aeroplane. On querying the lack of safety, I’m told everyone is related: chances are, you share a cousin with the person checking you in. With such security, who needs a metal detector. Gatwick’s North Terminal was a harsh reality check. As much as I love London – and I really do, for its shops, people watching and world-class restaurants ­– we all need some R&R every now and then. If you find yourself cursing fellow commuters and resenting the rain, it may be time for a restoring trip to absorb the slow living, relaxed vibe of east Iceland. It may be the city that never sleeps, but New York is having a moment with a wave of new places to bed down. The latest hotels, popping up all over Manhattan and beyond, are perfect for those who want to eat, drink and be merry (and perhaps catch a few winks, too) Words: Angelina Villa-Clarke

The Roxy Hotel, Tribeca If you want to be in the heart of achingly hip New York, then head downtown to the reincarnation of what was once the iconic Tribeca Grand Hotel. Now reborn as The Roxy, and described as ‘the ultimate living room’ for the arts world, this hotel is as cool as it gets. Once a 1920s movie theatre, the new design references its past in the huge, open-plan loungelobby with its bare-brick walls, red velvet curtains and worn-out leather sofas. While the guest rooms are small but interesting, with their mix-match of late-1960s and contemporary styles (think oversized bronze lighting, honeycomb-print wallpaper, crisp linens and statement chairs), it is the ground floor public space that has the buzz. Here, the hotel calls on Tribeca’s collaborative culture by pulling in some of New York’s starry names. Owned by Paul Sevigny, brother of Chloë, for instance, is the private Paul’s Cocktail Lounge (open Wednesday to Saturday; be warned – entry is down to the doorman’s discretion). It’s an eye-

popping scene straight out of Palm Beach with a neon coral and emerald colour palette, floral hand-painted wallpaper, patterned mirrors and a backbeat by some of the city’s most in-demand DJs. Waitresses deliver drinks, designed by noted mixologists Jeremy Oertel and Natasha David, on silver trays while dressed in Chloë Sevignydesigned outfits. It’s a scenester’s paradise.

While the all-day eaterie sees chef Joseph Abbruzzese, formerly of The Breslin, offer up modern American organic dishes: oysters, lobster, black sea bass, lemon chicken, it comes into its own for brunch with a baked ham carving station, black raspberry coffee cake, house-made waffles and omelettes made to order.

Jazz is the soundtrack here with live music played on Sundays and every evening in the lounge. Real buffs, however, should head downstairs to The Django, a jazz club inspired by the classic Jazz Age Parisian boîtes. While you may be tempted to pop over to the new Starbucks opening up nearby in Chelsea (the ‘coffee-as-theatre roastery’, as it is being called, will be the biggest in the world at 20,000 sq ft when it opens in 2018), we advise you to stay put. Your caffeine fix can also be catered for at The Roxy with its own outlet of Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee, famous for its custom espresso specials (the East Village opening was one of NYC’s first fair-trade coffee shops). The Penthouse, The Mark, Upper East Side Back in 2009, when legendary designer Jacques Grange put his spin on The Mark hotel, it became the talk of the town. His haute-pop fusion style includes a stand-out lobby with a bold, zebrastriped black-and-white floor, Paul Mathieu orange velvet sofas and a Ron Arad low-hanging sphere chandelier. While the bedrooms are a tad more understated, the glamour factor is not scrimped on, with marble bathrooms (huge for New York), deep carpets, Italian bed linen and shimmery grass-cloth wallpaper. Ladurée macarons left on your bedside, whimsically illustrated toiletries and 24-hour access to Bergdorf Goodman are just some of the on-the-button details. The designer has now returned to add his pièce de résistance: a new 12,000 sq ft penthouse suite – the largest in the whole of the US – carved out of what was formerly a private residence. Stretched over two floors, it includes five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a steam room, walk-in wardrobes, a chef’s kitchen, library lounge and conservatory. Carved out of an old factory, the boutique hotel features an edgy brick, glass and steel décor and rooms with doubleheight windows and balconies. A rooftop pool, three bars, with one set in a reimagined water tower, and grand ballroom will no doubt attract a sophisticated following as well as the usual hipsters to the neighbourhood.

Which Way Out? A Quick Walk Though Negotiated Settlements in Criminal Proceedings

ast year Southwark Crown Court approved the terms of a Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA) in respect of Standard Bank Plc which resulted in the suspension of criminal proceedings brought by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) against the bank for failing to prevent bribery in relation to a US$ 6 million payment made by its former sister bank in Tanzania to a local partner. Under the terms of the DPA, Standard Bank was ordered to pay fines compensation and costs, to cooperate with the SFO, subject itself to independent review of its anti bribery and corruption policies and implement recommendations of the reviewer. Provided Standard Bank complies with the terms of the DPA it will avoid prosecution. In the past prosecutors have struggled to prove corporate criminal liability for many types of business crime, especially in the case of larger companies. This is due to the “Identification Principle” requiring proof that offences were committed at board level with the relevant “criminal” state of mind. DPA’s have been in operation in the USA for many years but were introduced to the UK

in 2014 as a way of helping Prosecutors, such as the SFO, satisfy political and public demand to hold companies to account for serious misconduct. DPA’s are not available for individuals, but people wishing to avoid being convicted of a crime have a number of other options. Many plead not guilty and work towards being acquitted in court. For minor offences a person may seek to persuade the prosecutor that criminal proceedings against them are not in the public interest or that regulatory proceedings can be brought instead. Some may also agree to plead guilty to a less serious offence in return for the prosecution dropping a more serious one. In serious cases, a person may be invited to enter into an agreement with a prosecutor to assist them in exchange for immunity, a reduced sentence or agreement not to use certain evidence in court. Negotiated settlements can sometimes be a way of avoiding a worse outcome and achieving certainty and a conclusion of proceedings at an earlier stage than might otherwise be possible. That can be an attractive prospect for a company with an eye on its long term business interests or

an individual who wants to put their past mistakes behind them as soon as possible. Unfortunately there is no guaranteed outcome. If negotiations are unsuccessful or either side later resiles from the agreement, information provided at an earlier stage is likely to have yielded material to support a prosecution. If the conduct under investigation took place in a number of countries it is also possible that even if proceedings are settled in the UK, the agreement does not put a stop to cases elsewhere , and civil suits might follow which can risk leading to the unpicking of what appeared to be watertight agreements. Rarely is a speedy or risk free exit to be found from a probe into serious forms of business crime, but with cool headed consideration of all the relevant evidence and circumstances it is possible to pick the best solution and develop a clear strategy to achieve it. As China’s significance to the global economy has grown, author ShaoLan Hsueh is breaking down the language barrier for a whole new audience with her innovative Chineasy teaching method WORDS: MELISSA EMERSON London-based entrepreneur and author ShaoLan Hsueh believes everyone is capable of learning a second language, and is on a mission to bridge the gap between East and West and improve communication between the two, via her innovative and award-winning Chinese language learning series. Having created her own illustration-led teaching methodology – Chineasy – and with 2.5million views of her TED talk on

the subject, Hsueh published Chineasy: The New Way to Read Chinese in 2014. Already translated into 15 languages, she has now followed up with a second single-volume guide – Chineasy Everyday. Based on Hsueh’s belief that Chinese thinking has significantly impacted its language and civilisation, the second book follows the same principles to teach users Chinese characters, but has more of an emphasis on customs and daily

life, featuring thematic chapters on topics such as travel, business, food and home life. Following its publication in March, Hsueh took the time to share her thoughts on the project with Canary Wharf Magazine.

ON The IDEA… “I’m the daughter of a calligrapher so I have always been interested in Chinese characters, but I didn’t realise how difficult it is to learn them until I saw my British-born children struggle. I tried many ways to encourage them but they weren’t interested. I’m a geek, so I decided to do something about it.”

what’s in the new book… “Chineasy Everyday teaches over 400 of the most used and useful Chinese characters, phrases and sentences. It includes all facets of Chinese life and culture, arranged in 11 practical themes from animals and numbers, to travel and business. I begin all 11 sections with an overview of key Chineasy characters, then present the specific symbols relevant to each, providing insight into how Chinese thinking has shaped its language and civilisation. I hope it will stimulate and enchant the culturally minded and inspire everyone who seeks new experiences and a wider understanding of our world.”

evolution and expansion of the language, only around four per cent of Chinese characters are now pictographic. So, instead of trying to reproduce these historical links, we use a totally refreshing approach. Our team researches the definition, origin and history of the character and we then move on to the applications – for example, how to build more characters and phrases – before we consider how to make stories out of them. The illustrations have to be something that Westerners can associate with, making them easier to remember.”

ON the chineasy method… “I broke down thousands of Chinese characters before analysing and prioritising the fundamental building blocks. When these building blocks are combined, they form compounds that can in turn be combined to create phrases and even simple sentences. Through this method, and because Chineasy teaches more than just the obvious pictographic characters, learners can form a very decent vocabulary bank with little effort.”

ON re-working history… “Ancient Chinese was traditionally pictographic – symbols were drawings of what they represented – yet over thousands of years, many of these pictographs have morphed into very different shapes from their original forms. Following the

of two very different cultures played the most important role. My business experience may help a little bit in terms of project management and execution, but I have definitely been more in creative mode since I started Chineasy. The project represents a return for me to my artistic upbringing and is in many ways more of a design project, which happens to incorporate my experience and acquired skills in business and education. It’s the culmination of my life and work journey through the East and West.”

ON the growth of china…

ON the artwork… “For me, Chineasy is not only an educational project. It is also an arts project. I worked with a team of people including illustrator Noma Bar and design agencies, as well as a few other freelancers. I deliberately did not want to go for the traditional Chinese way of drawing because my audience was mainly Western. The illustrations had to be something universal, modern and elegant. Each character we create has to follow the same three guidelines – they have to look stunning, be stylistically consistent with what we have produced before and, most importantly, they have to be educationally effective. Whenever a new illustration is created, I show it to my children. If they can guess the answer immediately, then I know we’ve got it right.”

ON business… “I’ve lived both in Asia and the UK. The understanding

“The number of Chinese language learners has grown strongly in recent years, and I believe this trend will continue because of China’s emergence as an economic and global power. In the last two decades, China’s economy has gone from being relatively small to the world’s second largest. In recent years, it has also shifted its focus from the economy to environmental and social development – focusing more on quality of life than economic growth. Because of its influential role in the global community, people from other countries have become much more aware of its fascinating culture, long-standing traditions and language and I firmly believe that knowing the Chinese language gives a whole new level of understanding.”

ON canary wharf… “Chinese companies and individuals have invested heavily in London, especially in the Canary Wharf area. When walking around here, I am sure you can spot some ‘for sale’ signs posted in both Chinese and English, which shows the importance of the Chinese language in attracting prospective Chinese buyers and investors. In any line of business, effective communication is vital. Learning and being able to speak in the Chinese buyer or investor’s mother-tongue enables businesses to remove the language barrier and achieve more effective communication, and as a result, have a greater chance of succeeding in doing business with those Chinese clients.”

ON taking time off… “There were ups and downs in setting up the business – like any other new business – but I’ve been very fortunate to overcome the difficulties in the end. I deal with the pressure by weight training and also copying the Heart Sutra, a Buddhist scripture used in meditation. I blend these things into my daily routine. Lifting heavy weights helps me to stay focused and I also spend ten minutes in the steam room after my workout; I allow my mind to wander during this precious time, and it’s where some of my best ideas are generated. Copying the Heart Sutra also helps my mind to clarify, be at peace and concentrate. It takes me 15 minutes to complete and I always feel so calm when doing that. It works like magic.”

ON digital users… “Digital content will certainly be Chineasy’s main focus in the coming years. My new book Chineasy Everyday also comes in an ebook form as well as hardback and the content we produced for it will be digitised and tailored to fit online and app users’ learning habits. I believe Chineasy learners

should not only get to have great fun learning with us, but they should be able to do it at any time and anywhere.”

ON the future… “Undoubtedly, the importance of China will keep growing on the world stage and I would like to work with top animators, programmers and other talents to expand the project further. Some of the fan letters we receive also suggest we expand our system to other difficult languages, such as Japanese, Korean and Arabic. According to Virgil, Laocoön was a priest of Apollo in the city of Troy who was killed for nearly exposing the Greek warriors hidden inside the Trojan Horse left outside the city walls. He called forth the wrath of Athena and Poseidon, who favoured the Greeks, and sent two vast sea-serpents to dispose of him and his sons by wrapping their coils around their bodies. This tour de force of Hellenistic sculpture has been reproduced in all possible media to become one of the most enduring archetypal forms of European art, a

Quayola’s Laocoön is the latest incarnation in this tradition, a meditation on the art of sculpture itself, and on the process of extrapolating form from bare matter. His designs are the result of complex computational processes explored via custom-made software. 3-D scanning and modelling were employed to bring the sculpture from physical to digital form. The information was then processed and translated into the final sculpture by milling using robotic arms, created in a bespoke material made from special resin filled with pulverised white marble. he start of April saw the new rules for stamp duty on buy-to-let or second home purchases come into effect. While there had been a lot of discussion about how these would work in practice, it wasn’t until the Chancellor’s budget at the end of March that the final plans were outlined. Perhaps one of the biggest surprises was that largescale investors in rental property would not be exempted from the additional stamp duty levy as it was widely reported they would be. Another key change was the ‘exemption’ window for those buying a new principal residence before selling their previous home. It was thought that the exemption period would be 18 months, whereas in fact it was announced that buyers would have 36 months to sell their previous home. Buyers will still have to pay the additional stamp duty, however, they will have double the amount of time to claim a refund should they sell their previous home.

Price growth in prime central London remains relatively flat, but much stronger performance year-onyear has been seen in areas such as Islington, the City, the fringe and the South Bank where demand stays high. This contrasts with areas such as Knightsbridge, South Kensington and Chelsea where price falls have been recorded over the past year. With the London mayoral election and the EU referendum to look forward to this summer, we will have to wait and see the effect that these have on the market, but for now with the sun shining the market is buoyant.

T

he new tax year has started positively and, with a new wave of relocation into the City, the lettings market feels busier than it has done over the last few months. We have now found tenants for many of the prime houses that had been vacant for months but in turn we have a shortage of properties over £1,000 per week with many corporate applicants disappointed with the lack of choice in the market.

Stamp Duty Land Tax for buy-to-let properties has now been introduced The new tax year has also brought many changes to legislation for lettings agents and landlords. A few could have a dramatic effect on the lettings market, which will become clear over the next few months. The main change is the higher rates of SDLT – the new Stamp Duty Land Tax for buy-to-let properties has now been introduced and a surcharge of three per cent will be payable on all buy-to-let properties and second homes. Some heads of agencies are expecting this to diminish supply levels and send private sector rents through the roof. I do not see this affecting the Islington market immediately as stock levels from completed new developments are at an all-time high and will continue to supply the market over the next six to 12 months. However, we may see a reduction in properties coming on to the market in the more traditional period houses or developments, thus increasing these rents as demand continues to grow throughout the busy summer months. Further regulation of the buy-to-let mortgage market will also be finalised later in the year, which could tighten up lenders’ lending criteria and some landlords may find it harder to expand their portfolio, so this may have an effect on the levels of stock that we see coming on to the market.

How is the central London development market performing at the moment? In our latest central London residential development market update, we predict that new development supply will continue to slow as a result of significant changes made recently by the Government. While the number of units under construction in central London continued to climb during 2015 – with a 28 per cent increase in the last year and ten per cent growth in H2 2015 – there are signs that this activity is beginning to plateau. The number of new unit starts in H2 2015 were lower than in H1, suggesting developers are beginning to slow their rate of delivery. Furthermore, and perhaps most significantly, the number of units seeking planning permission declined by 27 per cent during the second half of last year compared with H1 2015, suggesting that developers are set to slow future development rates. This looks worrying at a time when new housing needs to increase rather than fall. However, this has clearly been a reaction by developers to the recent political uncertainty, higher tax regime and slower sales market. The sales market had already been easing prior to the Autumn Statement in November, announcing that investors and second home buyers would have to pay an additional three per cent stamp duty on purchases from April 2016, but this has further dampened London residential demand.

How are house prices responding to the current market dynamics? Price movements across London have been mixed over the past year and during Q1 2016, and while values have increased by 0.2 per cent during Q1 2016 across central London as a whole, this masks a 0.3 per cent fall in core markets and a 0.7 per cent increase in outer core markets. Broadly speaking, lower value and outer core submarkets have experienced stronger price growth compared with higher value core locations. The east area continues to demonstrate the strongest price growth, seeing seven per cent in the year to Q1 2016, while the more expensive central submarkets such as Central West and the West End have experienced average price falls of 5.3 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively. Developers are experiencing varying degrees of success with their schemes, directly related to location and price point, and are largely adjusting to the current market conditions. Developments in outer core submarkets are still selling well, with pricing usually in the £400-£800 psf range, as

too are the lower-priced units in the less expensive core markets, especially where developers are open to negotiation. Market conditions are highly locationdependent – outer core markets where pricing is lower and buyers are largely domestic owner-occupiers will continue to perform well; markets more reliant on investor demand are proving more sensitive, with developers and buyers jockeying for position. The EU Referendum is exerting additional uncertainty and the outcome of the vote in June will be a key factor as to how the market performs in the latter half of 2016. If the UK elects to exit the EU, a period of conjecture and debate will ensue. The upshot for the central London residential development market will not necessarily be weaker in the long term but it will undoubtedly mean reduced activity and pricing in the short term with a less certain medium-term prognosis. However, if the vote is to stay in, normal service will resume almost immediately. This still means that location, pricing and stamp duty effects will be key determinants, but we expect a sound, safe and highly sought-after London residential market will re-emerge once the dust settles and the market has adjusted to the new tax regime.

A

he sales market is currently undergoing a period of transition due to very recent changes to stamp duty. With the Brexit issue also now looming, further questions are being raised. There are always periods like this where a few hurdles need to be negotiated, and the resulting changes in the market can have both positive and negative effects. Crossrail for example has been a major factor in the increase in house prices in certain parts of London, plus low interest rates are also still very appealing for first-time buyers. The ‘help to buy’ scheme has also helped thousands of buyers around the UK. The property industry always has to balance itself out in order to move forwards. Landlords may be facing a difficult time ahead, whether based in the UK or overseas, as changes to tax relief and the wear and tear allowance will see the gradual erosion of the profit that comes out of their monthly rental income. Brexit is, however, the hot topic of conversation and it would seem that many buyers and vendors are sitting on the fence until they have a clearer understanding of if we are to remain part of Europe or not. Put all of these factors together and what do we see? With the experience of working in the property industry for almost 20 years, one thing is certain; the market will always bounce back, meaning property is still the number one investment within the UK. Capital growth has always been the main attraction when buying a property as a home or for an investment and most importantly we all need somewhere to live.

fter the sudden rush of activity prior to the 1 April – brought on by the impending increase in stamp duty levy for investors and second home owners – the residential sales market now seems to be at a stalemate. Many home owners – and those wishing to become home owners – are sitting on their hands until the result of the referendum vote at the end of June is known. Many polls are suggesting the outcome is by no means a certainty and this is causing people to pause their moving decision until after the vote. When macroeconomic conditions create this kind of uncertainty, it normally leads to a bottle neck of demand and in turn, activity. With this in mind, it is highly likely we will see an incredibly busy period of transactions in the housing market in the third and fourth quarters of the year. Despite the dip in demand from investors after the increased taxation laws, the demand from first-time purchasers is expected to continue to increase and this will likely account for any void created by the reduction in investment purchasers. Although activity in sales transactions is temporarily stalling, the lettings market continues to remain bullish. This time of year is historically the start of the busy season for rental transactions. The supply of tenants looking for short term accommodation is not unduly affected by wider political concerns in the same way the sales market is. It will be interesting to see what the outcome of the Brexit vote will be and furthermore to see the tangible effect on the UK housing market.
