Seeing Stars, see page 18

From the

editor “Everything you can imagine is real” - Pablo Picasso

We’re in a frivolous mood this month. For our November issue, we have made it our quest to celebrate all things bright, beautiful and brilliant. First up is the new fine jewellery collection from the Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite designer, Jenny Packham. The long-established queen of resplendent red carpet gowns speaks to us on page 18 about why she reached to the stars for inspiration for the range, which she launched in collaboration with Goldsmiths. From timeless jewels to timepieces, on page 29 Richard Brown sits down with the CEO of Oris, Ulrich W Herzog, and explores how this independent brand succeeds in holding its own against the industry’s major players. Meanwhile, heavyweights of the fashion industry are brought to the Wharf this month, as we see the launch of Marks & Spencer’s latest clothing collection with the eternally chic Alexa Chung (p. 34). Fashion packs a real punch in the shape of Jaeger, which unveils the brand’s vibrant new Après-Ski collection this month (p. 33). If you needed a reason to hit the slopes this season, this is it. But before you go, it’s time to re-examine your skincare regime. On page 50 we explore the benefits of incorporating face masks into our weekly routine and uncover the latest innovations. When it comes to looking after our skin, everyone knows that one of the simplest ways is through hydration, but what of the new designer waters currently saturating the market – Are there genuine benefits, and what’s wrong with good old tap? Charlotte Phillips investigates on page 62. Finally, we turn to Fiat, which is launching a revival of its 124 Spider model, originally launched in 1966. Matthew Carter takes it for a spin on page 76 and finds that it operates in glittering style. And speaking of spinning, and glitter for that matter, this month marks the opening of the sparkling new Canary Wharf Ice Rink. Get your skates on and revel in the splendour of November.

seeing

stars

Jenny Packham has cemented her status as the go-to designer for royalty – Hollywood and otherwise. Now, she’s setting her sights on fine jewellery and she’s reached to the stars for her inspiration, as KATY PARKER discovers

I

f you haven’t heard the name Jenny Packham, then chances are you’ve been living in a subterranean bunker for the past five years. The British designer, who has carved out her niche in the creation of beautiful eveningwear and bridal gowns, counts numerous A-listers among her fans, including Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, Adele, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, and perhaps most famously, the Duchess of Cambridge. The Duchess – arguably one of the most influential women in fashion – has chosen to wear Packham’s designs at a number of significant occasions, including the debuts of both Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and more recently upon arriving in Canada with her family on their Royal tour. The designer is predictably tight-lipped about her associations with the royals, but when asked in the past if she works closely with the Duchess on her creations, she has said: “Absolutely. It’s always quite the collaboration.” Packham has also lent her talents to the silver screen, working with celebrated Sex and the City stylist Patricia Field, regularly dressing Kim Cattrall for her role as Samantha. It’s been a steady rise to starry heights for Packham, who graduated from Central Saint Martins with a first class honours degree, before establishing the Jenny Packham brand in 1988 with a readyto-wear evening collection. Perhaps surprisingly – given Packham’s classically elegant, feminine aesthetic that lends itself so well to wedding gowns – it was nearly ten years later before the designer introduced a bridal collection. She now has stores and showrooms in London, New York, Paris and Hong Kong. Packham tells me that her most recent S/S17 collection, which

she showcased at New York Fashion Week to rave reviews, was inspired by “the style and sensibility of 31 muses – past and present – from Elizabeth Taylor to Jennifer Lawrence and Isabella Rossellini.” The result was a show-stopping array of embellished wide-leg trousers, metallic lace ruffle blouses and Chantilly lace gowns studded with sequins and crystals, complete with exquisite details, such as illusion tulle, cascading sequins and floral embroidery. Now, Packham is entering the world of fine jewellery, as she launches a bridal collection this autumn exclusively with Goldsmiths. I ask her about the creation of the line, and how jewellery design compares to fashion. “I really enjoy the process of creating something truly special and beautiful,” she explains. “For me that is my greatest pleasure and challenge. Designing bridal wear has always given me great personal reward. To create a fine jewellery collection is an extension of my desire to create beautiful, timeless designs.” The collection comprises three suites – each of which has been designed around an engagement ring, with a complementing necklace and earrings. Again, Packham looked to the starry world of celebrity for inspiration: “The Gloria collection is inspired by Gloria Swanson, the epitome of old Hollywood glamour and leading lady of the golden age of cinema. [It is] intricate and contemporary, featuring a brilliant round diamond nestled in a square double halo of pavé set diamonds.” Showing that her fascination with stars extends beyond Hollywood, Packham presents multiple interpretations of the idea throughout the collection, including a collection inspired

by the aurora borealis. This, she explains, “reflects my interest in both the cosmic and cinematic star. Inspirationally, it gave us unlimited sparkle allowance!” She continues: “The Aurora collection is inspired by the brightest cluster of stars, while the Étolie collection – étoile, meaning ‘star’ in French – is a stunning solitaire diamond collection. Encapsulating our signature style – romantic, feminine and intricate in detail – Étolie is timeless yet contemporary: a collection for the modern romantic.” Talking to Packham about the collection, she seems to have an innate passion for jewellery and I ask her if this has always been the case. “Like most women I have a strong attraction to jewellery – its beauty and symbolism. I am particularly drawn to ancient jewellery; its history and the idea that the jewellery links us to the past. Rings in particular are so personal. Associated with love and hope, they form an integral part of a woman’s history.” And what of her own personal history with jewellery? “My mother loved jewellery, and when I was growing up I’d play dressing up games in her bedroom, delving into her boxes of chains, rings and earrings. She had one bracelet with a locket, which she always told me was priceless. For years I wondered its worth and why she referred to it in this way. On my wedding day I wore it for the first time. I opened the locket to discover layers of miniature photographs of my mother’s family, and I understood its pricelessness.” Packham explains that she has been dreaming of doing such a project for years. So why did she ultimately choose to collaborate with Goldsmiths? “Like Jenny Packham,” she replies,“Goldsmiths is a British brand with integrity and heritage. Both accessible and contemporary, the synergies between the two brands made it the perfect partnership.” I finish by asking Packham what advice she would give to up-and-coming designers and she retorts, “Find a niche and be the best at it!” And if she could dress any celebrity bride, who would it be? “I would love to have designed for Marilyn Monroe,” she replies. It’s an unsurprising answer; the quintessential starlet for a woman whose own star has never been brighter. The Jenny Packham Collection, exclusive to Goldsmiths, Canada Square

hanel’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, finds himself the inspiration behind the French fashion house’s new J12 watch. The black-and-white J12 XS collection emulates the designer’s famously monochrome style, and the limited-edition range of lambskin fingerless gloves (onto which the watch can be strapped) directly references Lagerfeld’s own signature pairs. One of the most impressive pieces is the J12 XS large watch cuff (pictured), which wraps around the wrist and fuses black high-tech ceramic, steel, diamonds and black lacquer. The most notable thing about the J12 XS, however, is its size. The miniature model has been whittled down to 19mm – dainty, but full of attitude. From a selection, chanel.com

heart of gold The modern-day trend for rose gold engagement rings has been given a timeless appeal thanks to Tiffany & Co.’s latest collection. As part of the celebrations to mark the 130th anniversary of the famous Tiffany Setting (first introduced in 1886 by founder Charles Lewis Tiffany), the jeweller has reimagined this classic ring design – featuring six platinum prongs that elevate the central stone above the band – in contemporary 18-karat rose gold. The ring also comes with a matching rose gold and diamond pavé wedding band. Tiffany & Co., Cabot Place

all creatures great and small The animal kingdom has once again been brought to life in the world of high jewellery in Van Cleef & Arpels’ latest collection. From elephants and giraffes to parrots and penguins; from monkeys and koalas to ladybirds and butterflies, each creature in this menagerie-inspired line has been immortalised in the form of precious clips (presented as a pair or singularly) adorned with diamonds and gemstones. The eternal faithfulness of penguins (known to mate for life) has been illustrated by the jeweller in a tender composition, featuring diamonds, black onyx and two shades of coral on the base to represent their icy setting, while the mysterious allure of the mythical phoenix has been depicted in golden mother-of-pearl and diamonds. Farer’s Mechanical Debut While in recent years we’ve witnessed an explosion in homegrown ‘fashion watches’ – think the battery-powered quartz creations of Olivia Burton, W. T. Author, Shore Projects and Sekford – you can still count the British brands producing serious numbers of mechanical watches on one hand – Bremont, Christopher Ward, Schofield and Pinion will get you to four; Farer will now take you up to five. Until recently, Farer was in the business of creating fashion watches. Now, the 2014-founded company has announced its first collection of automatics. As with all of the UK’s native mechanical watch brands, Farer is still reliant on Switzerland for its self-winding movements – the ETAproduced Calibre 2824-2, in this case – but names such as Beagle, Endurance and Hopewell nod toward the brand’s decidedly British underpinnings. The three, 39.5mm timepieces are designed to be unisex. Each comprises a stainless steel case and a sapphire glass caseback, through which a Farer-engraved, oscillating weight is visible. At £875, the pieces head up the top of the ‘bestfor-under-£1K’ watch category. farer.com

Riding Dapper A sea of monocles, moustaches and vintage motorcycles washed its way through London on the last Sunday of September, as the capital played host to the annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. The cause? Prostate cancer and suicide prevention. The event? The largest motorcycling charity meet in the world. Founded in Sydney in 2012, the DGT now inspires more than 50,000 riders in over 500 cities to don their finest get-up and jump atop their cherished café racers. London’s riders progressed from Stratford’s Olympic Park to Regent’s Park, via Tower Bridge, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. Earlier this year, DGR-title sponsor, Zenith Watches, unveiled its Heritage Pilot Ton-Up at Baselworld. The brand subsequently created five special DGR editions of the watch, featuring the event’s logo at six o’clock, a unique tan leather strap, and an intricately engraved case-back. The Zenith Watches Team was the largest to ride in the DGR this year, collectively raising more than £52,000. gentlemansride.com, zenith-watches.com

In Pursuit of the Perfect Pilot’s Watch Sporty sister brand to the more classic Frédérique Constant, Alpina has cornered the market when it comes to affordable action watches. Its latest innovation, the Startimer Pilot Automatic Chronograph, is a distinctly ergonomic piece, boasting highly legible sub-dials and luminous indexes. Military dial colours come in either black, petrol blue or dark green. A date window is found at 3 o’clock. Fans of early pilots watches will appreciate a large 44mm case, an oversized screw-in crown and chunky leather strap. It’s yours for £2,090. alpina-watches.com

ONE TO WATCH Sandy Madhvani, showroom manager at David M Robinson in Canary Wharf, selects his watch of the moment: Water-resistant to 6 bar, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Le Petit Prince” has all the qualities typically found in a highperformance timepiece: precision, functionality and reliability. The timepiece features a day and date display and measures 43 mm in diameter Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Le Petit Prince”, £4,190, IWC, available at David M Robinson, Jubilee Place

Ready for Take Off

The Red Bull Air Race World Championship is designed to push the planet’s best pilots to the limit. As the season reaches its conclusion, Holly Fradley discovers what that means, courtesy of official timekeeper Breitling

A

word of warning. If you suffer from generalised anxiety disorder and someone invites you to experience the fastest motorsport on the planet, from a pilot’s seat, rather than the spectator stands, do not seek solace from the internet. As with undiagnosed medical afflictions, Google’s search results are not the most reassuring. My invitation came by way of Breitling, official timekeeper to the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, an event designed to provide the most advanced aerial challenge in any stunt pilot’s calendar. The word ‘nervous’ didn’t come close. Breitling has been involved with the Championship since 2007, its entrants in the 2016 season taking the shape of France’s François Le Vot and legendary Brit aerobat Nigel Lamb. There’s natural synergy between a low-level, high-speed aeroplane competition and a company that’s cultivated its image around precision. Aviation is Breitling’s thing. Inventors of the first wrist chronograph in 1915; the first chronograph to feature an independent push-piece in 1923; and the first company to subsequently present a two push-piece chronograph in 1934, Breitling spent its early years conceiving devices that proved particularly practical for pilots. The brand cemented its standing

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

in the aviation industry with the 1952 launch of the Navitimer. The watch’s complex slide rule allowed pilots to calculate fuel consumption with a glance towards their wrist. Think of it as the world’s first smartwatch. It’s a sunny Sunday morning at Blackbushe Airport, Surrey. This afternoon, the 14 pilots that make up the Red Bull Air Race Masterclass will compete in the Ascot leg of the World Championships. Before that? A taster session in a two-seater stunt plane and speeds of up to 200mph. “You must remember to keep communicating with me throughout the flight,” says Francis Barros, my pilot for the day and three-time winner of Brazil’s National Aerobatic Championship. “I will need to know that you are still conscious.” The cockpit before me has pedals and a joystick. “Avoid touching them at all costs,” says Barros. In front, a Garmin camera is positioned unflatteringly close to my face. We begin with an airport flyover and some turns through a series of 25 metre-high air-filled pylon gates. Next, a couple of barrel rolls, some loops and a stall turn. We’d agreed beforehand that a thumbs up from me meant that Barros could go faster. Surprisingly, I found that both of my thumbs were up. Ten minutes, 5Gs and one

breathtaking ride later, I was back on the ground, the blood beginning to find its usual route around my body. The experience and Ascot race that followed were incredible. The Garmin video of my face under g-force, not so much. Following the cancellation due to high winds of the final race in Las Vegas in October, Germany’s Matthias Dolderer was named the 2016 Red Bull Air Race World Champion. Breitling’s Nigel Lamb and François Le Vot finished fourth and 12th, respectively. Breitling’s Emergency Night Mission, the world’s first watch with an in-built dual-frequency personal locator beacon, is now available with orange or yellow accents, £15,340, Goldsmiths, Canada Place

THE REAL

DEAL

Once one of Switzerland’s largest watch companies, Oris navigated its way out of the quartz crisis to reclaim a spot at the top table of watchmaking. Long-serving CEO, Ulrich W Herzog, explains how the independent brand earned itself a seat alongside the industry’s big boys WORDS: RICHARD BROWN

O

ris’s slogan is ‘Real Watches for Real People’. Everton Football Club is known as ‘The People’s Club’. This provides us with a pithy comparison with which to kick off this piece: Oris is the Everton FC of the watch world. It’s true. Let me explain… As we know, watches, like football, are big business. The most successful brands, like the most successful clubs, are typically those propped up by the most powerful backers. (This isn’t always the case; the two most lusted-after brands, Rolex and Patek Philippe, are both independently owned, but this doesn’t help our argument, so we’ll be discounting these and moving swiftly on.) Cartier, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Montblanc, Panerai and Vacheron Constantin all belong to Richemont. Breguet, Blancpain, Omega and Longines coexist within Swatch Group. Hublot, TAG Heuer and Zenith form part of LVMH. These brands benefit from collective resource, huge spending power and large economies of scale – important in an industry where your end product is reliant on a snaking chain of suppliers and hundreds of components that typically can only be ordered in the thousands. In this big-money arena, independent Oris punches

above its weight. Like Everton, Oris has secured its position within the Premier League of watchmaking through performance alone. The brand has been churning out solid watches, away from the limelight, for several seasons now. David Moyes managed Everton for 11 years. Ulrich W Herzog has helmed Oris for the past 34. The son of ex-general manager Oscar Herzog, a man who himself notched up 43 years at the company, Ulrich was already serving Oris when, in 1970, it became part of the ASUAG group, latter to transmute into Swatch Group. Unlike the arrival of the Apple Watch, the advent of the quartz wristwatch really did devastate Switzerland’s mechanical watch industry. Seiko’s Astron landed in 1969. At that time, Oris was producing around 1.2 million units a year. In the decade that followed, the company slashed its staff from 900 to just a few dozen. He subsequently abandoned quartz in favour of producing solely mechanical timepieces. It was a punchy move. The industry was being undercut and out sold by vastly more affordable, more accurate battery-powered pieces from Japan. Few had the balls to bet on the industry’s reawakening. Yet Herzog believed that if Japan was responsible for

CANARY WHARF | 29

derailing Switzerland’s traditional watch industry, ultimately, it would be Japan that helped with its revival. Travelling the country during the mid-’80s, Herzog felt a tangible shift in the way people were appreciating mechanical wristwatches. “The Japanese were the first ones to see the potential of these things,” he explains. Aware of Japan’s influence over global trends, Herzog predicted that this rediscovered appetite for watches made of gears, cogs and springs would spread. It did. “The guy you should be really proud of in this country is Paul Smith,” says Herzog. “He was the first guy to take our watches and sell them in his shops. He had a vision. At that time, no jeweller wanted mechanical watches, they all wanted quartz watches. Paul Smith said ‘no, I want these ones.’” Fast forward three decades, to where we are now, and a timepiece from Oris will almost invariably appear within the annual ‘Best-of-Baselworld’ roundups that appear across the internet in the days that follow the close of the world’s largest watch jamboree. In 2012, the attention-grabber was the Artix GT Chronograph, a watch whose retrograde small seconds display ingeniously mirrored the rev counter of a racing car. A year later, the Aquis Depth Gauge set watch websites alight when it became the first timepiece to indicate depth by allowing water to enter its case via a small hole at 12 o’clock. “It’s really cool,” says Herzog. “It uses Boyle’s law [which states that the pressure of a given mass of an ideal gas is inversely proportional to its volume at a constant temperature] to measure depth accurately to 40m.” Still, it was only in 2014 that unassuming Oris really cemented its position alongside horology’s heavyweights. The Calibre 110 that debuted that year was the company’s first in-house movement for 35 years. While the brand was in

the business of manufacturing its own calibres prior to the 1982 buyout – archives suggest Oris made around 275 variants – its modern watches had been reliant on base movements from other manufacturers. “We’d add functions like world timers or regulator alarms to movements from ETA,” says Herzog. The 110 was the first to be designed – if not wholly produced – by Oris itself since the company regained its independence. Spectacularly, for Oris’s 110th anniversary, the Calibre 110 delivered a previously unheard of ten days of power from a single mainspring barrel. (Typically, watches that offer more than a three-day power reserve will have to incorporate a second mainspring.) A patented, non-linear power reserve indicator illustrated how much power was left in greater detail the further the watch ticked towards empty. “That really was a breakthrough for us. We didn’t manufacture the calibre completely – we have the parts made for us, according to our specifications – but as a movement, it was designed completely by Oris.” Remarkably, for an in-house, industry-beating, patent-boasting timepiece, the Calibre 110 was available for just £3,750. In 2015, Oris added a date window to the same base movement to present the equally elegant Calibre 111. This, in turn, mutated into the Calibre 112, when it was upgraded by way of a GMT function earlier this year. Both watches commanded considerable buzz during their respective Baselworld debuts. Both watches were priced, again, astonishingly, for under £4,200. You can see the emerging theme. Herzog believes that the respect Oris now enjoys among watch journalists is the

It would be naïve to dismiss the smartwatch movement as a fad; it would be equally naïve to overplay the threat smartwatches pose to the mechanical watch industry at large

direct consequence of three decades of autonomy. “Independence is a huge advantage,” he explains. “We can innovate the way we want; we can move very quickly. There’s not a big company in the shadows saying ‘you’ve got to make this and move within this price bracket.’ We don’t want to sell watches for £100,000, that’s not our way of doing business.” Independence means that when the market moves, so can Oris. The previous 18 months have seen a range of brands attempt to combat, or capitalise on, the emergence of the smartwatch. Recent figures may suggest that smartwatch sales are on the slide (down 48 per cent from Q4 2015 to Q1 2016, according to Strategy Analytics; down 32 per cent year-on-year in Q2 2016, according to the International Data Corporation) but TAG Heuer, Breitling, Frédérique Constant and Alpina have all invested heavily in the connected sector. As unimaginative as it has become for watch interviewers to provoke their subjects on the point of smartwatches, it seemed pertinent to do so with Herzog. Apple had just unveiled its second crack at

getting us hooked on the miniaturised computers it’s invented for our wrists. At the launch, the company claimed that it has become the world’s second largest watch brand, trailing only Rolex. That’s kinda massive. “For guys like Apple, of course smartwatches make sense,” says Herzog. “But I said from the beginning, I don’t see any future in this for Oris. There’s no long-term value with a smartwatch. Yes, I like to know how many steps I’ve done during the day – but tomorrow that function is outdated. There’s always a newer smartwatch around the corner. You have to throw away this one and buy the next one. If you look at an Oris watch, you have something that after 10 years you’ll still like to look at, you’ll love to see it on your wrist. You don’t have the same emotion with a smartwatch.” The truth, of course, is that no one really knows the extent to which the smartwatch sector will grow. Not the CEOs of watch companies; certainly not those of us who get to interview the CEOs of watch companies. It would be naïve to dismiss the smartwatch movement as a fad; it would be equally naïve to overplay the threat smartwatches pose to the mechanical watch industry at large. Thirty-five years ago, Herzog wagered that traditional timepieces would always win out in the hearts and minds of the style-conscious. So far, history has proven him right. Oris can thank its recent success on a run of solid watches delivered at sensible prices. While the brand stays committed to that formula, its winning streak looks set to continue. now bunnies, get excited – this month, Jaeger launches its first ever Après Ski-inspired collection. Bold, graphic separates are designed to be layered: think monochrome ribbed knitwear, knitted culottes, textured leggings and bright quilted puffa jackets. There’s plenty on offer for men too, with check shirts, luxurious tracksuits, and our favourite, the ever useful reversible yellow and grey gilet. Attention to detail hasn’t been overlooked: there is particular emphasis on the fastenings and linings, and pieces are made in high-quality fabrics such as cashmere, boiled wool and bonded jersey. Jaeger’s creative director, Sheila McKain-Waid, says: “The Après Ski collection was inspired by vintage 1960s Jaeger editorial and advertorial images. One of my favourite shots was taken by Norman Parkinson and shown at the recent 100 Years of Vogue exhibition. I loved the strong colours, bold graphics and subtle wit. Our collection was created with the same spirit of modernity and wit… These pieces are perfect for brightening grey winter skies.” Best of all, the pieces are versatile – they’ll take you from walking to wining. From £89, Jaeger, Cabot Place

Alexa, again Following on from the success of Archive By Alexa for Marks & Spencer, November sees the arrival of the Winter Collection, continuing the partnership between British style icon Alexa Chung and Marks & Spencer. The new range, the last of the Archive By Alexa series, is a modern interpretation of archive pieces, fusing heritage with contemporary style. Using the Marks & Spencer archive in Leeds, Alexa and the M&S design team have curated a 27-piece womenswear collection, of which Chung says, “For this project I wanted to focus on a more luxe eveningwear vibe to lead us into the winter party season.” All of the pieces are named after streets in Leeds, where Marks & Spencer was first established in 1884. face

Now is as good a time as ever to start taking better care of your skin. First stop? Face masks. Canary Wharf takes a look at the products that can take your skin from dull to dreamy – in just ten minutes WORDS: katy parker

W

inter is coming. And with it comes days of decreasing temperatures, cranked-up central heating and an onslaught of biting winds. Now, more than ever, your skin needs you, and the best way to lend it a dose of tender loving care is with a luscious, super-hydrating face mask. Traditionally thought of as the domain of the time-rich, the face masks of today are smart, effective and relatively hassle-free – while still feeling indulgent. They’re also impressively innovative. The new mask from Beverly Hills-based skincare brand Lancer is changing the face mask as we know it with its Younger Revealing Mask Intense. Instructions tell me to apply the mask for five to ten minutes while the anti-ageing ingredients are absorbed into the skin – nothing new there – but then comes the interesting part. By hovering the magnetic tool over your face, the product magically lifts the mask – taking with it all that surface grime and dead skin cells causing you blocked pores, premature ageing and a dull complexion – without even touching it, much in the way that a magnet pulls up iron filings. “When you wash a mask off with water, it dilutes the efficacy. This method removes dead skin cells, while leaving a fine film to absorb into your skin,” says Dr Harold Lancer, dermatologist to the stars and a man who counts Victoria Beckham, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian among his clientele. The magnetic attraction between mask and tool also provides microcurrent stimulation, which firms up the skin, revealing a younger complexion and healthy glow.

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

If you’d prefer to stick with the more conventional masks on the market, the Black Rose Cream Mask by Sisley is one of the best. Deliciously indulgent, the mask contains active anti-ageing ingredients black rose and padina pavonica, which promotes collagen regeneration. Apply two to three times a week for ten to 15 minutes for instant results that will stay with you into the next day and beyond. Skin is left looking plumper, fuller and more energised, with the telltale signs of long days and nights spent burning the candle at both ends dramatically reduced. The soft rose scent promotes relaxation, so unwind with this one: it’s a bi-weekly treat of the most spoiling kind. One of the hot topics in beauty this year has been pollution, and the harmful effect it can have on the skin. We are all aware of how UV rays from the sun can cause premature ageing and take the necessary steps to prevent this with face creams containing SPF, but not enough of us are protecting ourselves from this other – less visible – enemy. According to the World Health Organisation, more than 80 per cent of people living in urban areas around the world are exposed to air that exceeds acceptable limits for pollution. But the outlook is worse for us Londoners; the city currently looks to be in breach of EU limits on pollution for at least the next five years, while Oxford Street is the most polluted road in the world. Linda Bahr, national head of training and science at SkinCeuticals, comments: “Recent scientific research shows that the skin’s greatest enemy is no longer the sun. Ozone pollution surrounds us around the clock. It’s proven to cause

Decadence Defined

Crafted to showcase complexity and depth, Rare Cask is drawn from the broadest spectrum of casks, 16 different types, ever identified by the Master Whisky Maker. Far less than 1% of those casks maturing at the distillery have been identified as fitting to bestow the Rare Cask name. With rarity at its core, this is a whisky crafted from casks so rare they will never again be used in any Macallan whisky. Combining Spanish and American sherry seasoned oak casks, a high proportion of them first fill, gives rise to an exquisite whisky with a splendidly rich hue, and an unmistakable woody whisky. This is a single malt which captures a true decadence; its creation goes beyond any other Macallan whisky and its rarity is absolute. It is a single malt of such diversity and intricacy it challenges the very conventions of whisky creation.

Drip, Designer water is the latest health trend to explode, with options like maple water, birch water and alkaline water now available and promising myriad health benefits. But are they really better for us than good old tap? WORDS: charlotte phillips

W

hat does every off-duty supermodel have in common, other than legs up to my chest and swishy hair? They’re clutching the latest iteration of water, of course. Whether it’s cactus, aloe, coconut or maple, gone are the days when tap water was the answer to thirst. We’ve known for a while that drinking water – in any form – is good for health and physical appearance. “Drinking pure, clean water is great for the body,” says Miriam Gubovic, nutritionist at Canary Wharf’s CPRESS. “Our body is made of 60 per cent water, so not drinking enough dehydrates, whereas keeping hydrated helps the body flush out toxins. Urine and sweat are two big detox paths, which need water,” she says. Now, though, with staying hydrated seen as a silver bullet to good looks and good health, companies are capitalising on this and making our water options more numerous, more confusing, and certainly more expensive. It started with the celebrity favourite, coconut water. Between 2008-2013, the number of new coconut water products entering the market more than quintupled (up 540 per cent), led by North America and closely followed by Europe, according to Mintel. Coconut water is hydrating

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

and full of potassium, while being low in fat and cholesterol. “Coconut water is on a different level,” says Gubovic. “Its pH level is similar to our blood’s pH, and drinking it after exercise really helps replenish the electrolytes we’ve lost.” However, one problem with the packaging of these healthy waters is that we assume they’re

feature

unequivocally ‘good’, with no downside or need for quantity control. In reality, watermelon water may be rich in the amino acid citrulline and useful for refuelling heart rate and muscle cramp after a workout, but it’s fairly high in calories. Similarly, a container of coconut water has around 60 calories – it shouldn’t be drunk in limitless quantities, which isn’t made obvious to consumers. Likewise, cactus water is full of antioxidants, but is often packaged with lots of added sugars. That said, not all trendy waters are created equal. While aloe water is largely marketing hype – the aloe can’t be ingested in the same way as when used directly on skin, and is largely ineffective – tree waters such as maple, bamboo and birch do seem to have genuine merit. Tree waters are produced from the sap of trees which are ‘tapped’, often in Eastern Europe, a practice that has occurred for centuries. They’re tapped during the spring, when the roots soak water up from the ground and into the trunk, and the nutrient-rich water is then tapped out, packaged, and sold by brands such as Sibberi, which was founded by Clara Vaisse.

© Sibberi

“Tree waters are packed with electrolytes, which means they are naturally hydrating. Electrolytes are responsible for directing water (and nutrients) to the areas of the body where it’s needed most,” says Vaisse. “Conversely to coconut water, tree waters are all very low in sugars – birch water has four times less sugar than coconut water.” Plus, she says, “Bamboo water is the highest natural source of silica, which supports the body with collagen production.” Birch water is anti-inflammatory, while maple water is high in antioxidants and manganese, which supports thyroid and bone health. As for the merits of tap water – it depends where you are, says Gubovic. “In Singapore, for example, tap water is very pure and clean, whereas in places like Manila, it’s not,” she says. “In London, they add fluoride to tap water, which is good for teeth, but it’s actually a poison.” But these fancy bottled waters don’t come cheap: a single serving of birch water is around £2. This will change, says Vaisse. “Tree water is a premium product but will become affordable to everyone as demand grows. Brands will be able to save on the cost of transport and the cost of bottling, passing on the savings directly to customers.” She goes on, “[It started with] people looking for a way to hydrate that is natural and lower in sugars than juices or smoothies. Tree water is just the beginning of a structural shift that is driven by younger consumers. People who are concerned about the sugar content of drinks will pick them more and more.” And, I ask Vaisse, what’s next? “I have heard of lime tree [water]!” So, the verdict? There’s nothing wrong with most of the new designer waters, and they offer variety and certain nutrients. As long as you steer clear of added sugars and watch your portion intake, drink and enjoy – it’s largely beneficial, and, says Gubovic, anything encouraging people to drink more water, in any form, is positive. However, beware the marketing hype: they are by no means an essential addition in ensuring health. When in doubt or on a budget, tap water will do just fine. Blue-sky thinking

Stressed and overworked? It’s a familiar story for so many of us. But help is at hand, in the shape of Phil Hathaway, who guides his clients to the principles behind mental clarity and wellbeing. He speaks to EVE MARTIN

I

t’s no secret that we are suffering from stress more than ever before. The majority of us are overworked, while simultaneously juggling relationships, households, social lives, children… the list goes on. This has brought about the popularity of calm-inducing activities such as yoga – and, more recently, mindfulness. Phil Hathaway, a life coach based in Tower Bridge, is adopting a different approach, which points to the principles behind all human experience, beneath all psychology. Formerly in the armed forces, before working as a computer programmer and then owning his own gym, Phil worked in hypnotherapy and neuro-linguistic programming for ten years prior to discovering transformative life coaching in 2012. It was at that moment that his own life changed. He studied under Michael Neill – life coach extraordinaire and the best-selling author of five books – at his life coaching academy in Los Angeles, and two years later was given the great honour of being asked to join the faculty as a life coaching teacher. Phil cites this as “one of the proudest moments of his life”. So let’s go back to the beginning: what exactly is life coaching? “Traditionally,” Phil explains, “life coaching will involve a session where someone will sit down with you and will want to know what your goals are and how you’re going to get there. They will try to put strategies in place and in doing so will make people feel as though they need to change and move away from their core selves. On the flipside, I’m coming in from the angle that every person who sits in front of me is OK; they don’t need to change. I think people are perfect but for their thinking, their

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

health & fitness

wellbeing is innate – but they don’t know it.” He continues, “People think the world creates their stress; things like the boss being in a bad mood or impending deadlines. The truth is there is no connection whatsoever between the outside world and what you’re feeling. We like to guide our life by feelings, but what we need to understand is, that feelings are created by thinking. As people see this connection, something happens and people start to let go; they see the truth of what’s really going on, a space opens up and they have freedom. They become more creative, innovative, more loving, less judgemental and ultimately true to themselves.” Phil meets his clients on a one-to-one basis, and tells me that he utilises many means of communication for his meetings; some prefer conference calling, while others prefer the telephone, and for some it is simply a case of a walk in the park. The sessions are relaxed and conversational, encouraging intimacy and familiarity between him and the client, with none of the intimidating questioning or formulaic structure typical of other types of therapy. Phil is looking to use his tried-and-tested approach to help businesses and workers, working with them to alleviate feelings of stress or anxiety. He says: “Having met with many people within business over the years, it’s apparent that the majority, although obviously doing their best to help companies to perform well, often don’t understand the true nature of the principles that govern how the human mind functions. It’s all innocent, but without this understanding, management, and staff themselves, can inadvertently make matters worse not better. Rather than face up to the fact that staff are struggling with anxiety and stress, businesses often turn a blind eye; it’s easier to allow an employee to ‘move on’ and take their experience and knowledge with them than it is to deal with the matter at hand. Alas, unfortunately, there’s a stigma to anxiety and stress – especially at higher management levels where, culturally, it can appear as a weakness.” Phil is surprised at the number of companies that ignore the importance of state of mind: “It’s the missing variable that allows the workforce, from top to bottom, to work cohesively and efficiently. Clarity of mind is the oil that lubricates the machine but unfortunately this is not always understood.”

He relays a conversation he once had with an IT director of a large organisation who admitted to creating a climate of stress and anxiety within his team in order to motivate and keep the team ‘on the edge’. “I don’t need to explain that people don’t function that way,” he laments. “Creativity, innovation, resilience and motivation – the cornerstones of any business – come from clarity of mind. Clarity of mind creates an open space for creativity – the opposite blinkers possibility, diminishes potential and generally limits life.” Examples of Phil’s successes include a “general manager of a large, luxury business, who came to me after being signed off with stress. It took one afternoon for him to see at a deep level that he had been running a negative pattern of habitual thinking all his life. This thinking had played itself out at work and at home. We didn’t attempt to change his thinking – that would be hard work and self-defeating. “Instead, we went with the flow of this understanding, we explored together the nature of his thinking, we explored where his experience of life was coming from and very quickly he got to see for himself, at a deep level, his own wellbeing. It was a huge ‘ah ha’ moment for him. It wasn’t long before he was thriving – both in his personal and business life.” And it isn’t just stress that Phil can help with; he cites one case where a woman who presented with a number of ‘serious’ issues dramatically reduced the number of cigarettes she smoked from 40 to four per day, although they didn’t discuss smoking whatsoever – Phil doesn’t work as a ‘stop smoking’ consultant. It’s yet another fascinating example of how his approach has changed people’s lives in a seemingly simplistic, effortless way. Phil continues: “I love the phrase ‘all boats rise with the tide’ and with this understanding the potential to raise your game – across the board – increases dramatically.” Phil also loves to give presentations and workshops to businesses to help people gain a deeper understanding of this within a corporate environment. So what are you waiting for? Give life coaching a try, and set your mind free. It’s as easy as a walk in the park. philhathaway.com

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Making the Cut

For times when nothing but steak and red wine will do, Manhattan Grill doesn’t disappoint, as GABRIELLE LANE discovers

O

ne thing Canary Wharf is not short on is restaurants that celebrate steak. There are the glitzy riverfront steak venues (Gaucho); the quirky, one-dish-donewell type steak venues (Relais de Venise L’Entrecôte) and the making-a-nightof-it entertainment venues (Boisdale of Canary Wharf), to name but three. And no, we haven’t forgotten the Josper grill at Plateau. This month we were invited to Manhattan Grill, on the ground floor of London Marriott Hotel West India Quay, a place that is also renowned for its wine. Ponder over the list of options just a second too long and you’ll be whisked to the in-house wine-tasting bar to try Riojas and Malbecs until you have chosen a grape worthy of your main course. Expect a curveball. The food here has always been good. Principally, there are two types of steak: wet-aged Creekstone USDA Black

Angus and dry-aged Scottish Aberdeen Angus. Within these two varieties, you can choose a fillet or a rib-eye cut, as well as a New York-style strip steak and a Scottish T-bone. If you want to bypass the crib sheet, the Creekstone Angus tends to be more tender and juicy, while the Scottish Aberdeen Angus is slightly richer and meatier in taste. We went for one of each – the waiting staff is thankfully very knowledgeable. When they arrived, both steaks were cooked perfectly. Both were delicious

You’ll be whisked to the in-house winetasting bar to try Riojas and Malbecs until you have chosen a grape worthy of your main course

without any sauces, but we decided to try the peppercorn, which was smoky and well made. When it comes to other sides, the creamed spinach is a must, although disregard any ideas that it might be healthy – this is buttery and moreish. While the main event at Manhattan Grill is obviously the meat, we predict good things from the seared Scottish salmon and sea bass fillets, because the seafood appetisers were particularly memorable. The scallops with bacon and lemon thyme jus were soft and full of flavour, while the king prawns with chilli and garlic butter were simple but undoubtedly fresh to start. Skipping fish? The pork cheek with celeriac and red cabbage deserves a mention: the combination of flavours strikes the right balance and the meat is tender and silken. Soft and sweet, it’s a real show piece. The only problem with writing a review of Manhattan Grill is that the mains are so generous and enjoyable, we didn’t make it to dessert. Resigned to skipping treats that include Eton Mess and a chocolate cake, out emerged a cocktail waiter with two citrusy, Prosecco-laced concoctions in time to toast a great restaurant. Never trust a food reviewer who makes it to pudding. Hertsmere Road, West India Quay, 020 7517 2808, manhattangrill.co.uk

What’s up,

wahaca? Despite our lack of geographical proximity, you’re never too far from a Mexican market, thanks to the street foodstyle offerings at Wahaca. Canary Wharf meets the man behind the successful restaurant chain

L

st week, we paid a visit to Wahaca – all in the name of research, of course. Despite it being a grey Tuesday night, it was vibrant and filled with loud post-work revellers downing Margaritas and demolishing grilled fish tacos and messy pulled pork quesadillas. This trendy eatery, it would seem, is excelling at serving up street foodstyle Mexican meals to a modish, discerning crowd for a decent price. For that, we have Thomasina Miers and Mark Selby to thank. The duo bring impressive accolades to the table: Miers is a past winner of MasterChef, has opened a cocktail bar in Mexico City and has written cookbooks, while Selby’s business-focused career has included Merrill Lynch, Easy Car and the Capricorn Group. Introduced through mutual friends, the two met in 2006 at a pub in White City, shook hands, and hopped on a plane to Mexico three weeks later. The rest is history. The first Wahaca opened in 2007, and now there are more than 20 locations and further expansion plans. “Our message has been the same for ten years: Mexican food can be delicious and exciting,” Selby says. At the time, they were ahead of the curve in thinking so. “It’s only now that there are quite a few new Mexican restaurants opening up in London, and top chefs are getting into it.” The secret to the Wahaca formula is that there is no formula. “I’d never been the manager of a

fEATURE

restaurant, and Thomasina had never been the manager of a kitchen,” says Selby. “We got a really young team of managers in. No one really knew what we were doing, but we had loads of energy and excitement, and that’s what still lives on in Wahaca.” The company has grown to 1,200 people, and Selby says his current biggest challenge is staying in touch with everyone. “Eight years ago I knew every single person’s name, now I don’t at all. But I want to.”

However, he’s no less hands-on. “I do the designs of all the restaurants. We start with a totally blank canvas and we look at where we are, whether we’re in an old pub or more of a media or grungy world, and the design and artwork and colours and layout reflect that.” That said, “One thing we do have in almost every site is work by street artists from around the world. It’s a nod to Mexico, where street art is very political.” Just as each site looks different, so too does the feel of each restaurant. In Canary Wharf, for example – “probably our most complicated business” – to cater for the hard-working demographic, Wahaca has a strong focus on takeaway, working with Seamless delivery service in the evenings. There’s a Wahaca food truck in Canada Square Park, and the roof terrace is particularly unique, says Selby. What does Selby do when not indulging in his favourite Wahaca dishes? (That’ll be the chilli quesadillas and pork tacos, by the way.) “Well, I spend time with my three children – if you can call that relaxing,” he says. “And I kite-surf, run, play tennis...” He’s busy, but not about to rest on his laurels. Next up is Wahaca’s Day of the Dead festival, featuring bands, street food, face painting, and more. “We don’t make money on it,” says Selby. “It’s just a little nod to Mexico, the brand and the business. Our overall game is to spread the word about Mexican food and culture.” And this Christmas – Mexmas, if you will – instead of being given chilli seeds to take away from your meal, as is the Wahaca way, you’ll be given seeds to grow your very own Christmas tree. There’s also a new winter menu launching now, and it’s the big tenyear anniversary in 2017. From a restaurant chain doing so phenomenally well in a competitive industry, we expect excellent things from Selby and Miers. Wahaca, it seems, is winning all the way. The Macallan Rare Cask

A single malt produced through meticulous dedication to wood, The Macallan Rare Cask is aged exclusively in sherry oak casks. This unique expression sees soft notes of opulent vanilla and raisin pique the nose, giving way to a sweet ensemble of apple, lemon and orange. ÂŁ200, available at Harrods

N

ever has a drink caused such a sensation as the Martini did in 1964, when Sean Connery’s James Bond first uttered the phrase “shaken, not stirred”. But avid fans of Ian Fleming’s novels will know that the character often favoured a whisky over a cocktail, a fact that film buffs finally cottoned on to in Skyfall, when Daniel Craig cracked open a 50-year-old bottle of The Macallan’s finest. While Bond may have been slow on the uptake, the rest of the world has been enjoying the distillery’s liquid gold for a little while longer – 192 years, in fact. Founded in 1824 in Scotland by farmer Alexander Reid, who leased eight acres of land from the Earl of Seafield, The Macallan’s distillery was one of the first in Scotland to be legally licensed and is still located on the same grounds today as it was when it was first established. Nearly two centuries later and the brand is still committed to the original founder’s dedication to high-quality spirits, and many of its older single malts have become highly coveted collectors’ items – in 2014, The Macallan M Imperiale 6-litre Lalique decanter sold at auction in Hong Kong for $628,000. Today the barley used to create each batch is still grown on the grounds surrounding The Macallan Estate, and the spring water used is drawn from its very own springs that are located on site. The warehousing process, on the other hand, is decidedly more international: while still located in the Scottish distillery, the wooden casks used for maturation are made out of wood from forests located in both America and Spain. “We use two types of oak: Quercus Alba, an American white oak, and Quercus Robur, a European oak,” The Macallan’s Master of Wood, Stuart MacPherson, tells me. “These two varieties give us different styles, characteristics and colours, which complement a number of our products.” The American oak is sourced from forests in Ohio, Kentucky and Missouri, whereas the European oak mainly comes from the north of Spain. The production for each cask is a lengthy process and

can take up to six years to mature. “After cutting the logs in the north of Spain, we leave the wood to dry naturally for a period of time to reduce the moisture before transporting it to the south, where we leave it for a further two years to dry,” MacPherson explains. “You then have the cask construction and seasoning process – we season with dried sherry – and that takes an average of 18 months. Then we deliver the casks to the distillery in Scotland.” At this moment in time, more than 250,000 casks are maturing at the distillery. The quality and type of oak used is fundamental to the creation process, with 80 per cent of each whisky’s characteristics and 100 per cent of its colour coming from the wood itself. “The Quercus Alba cask will give you a much lighter colour and more vanilla and citrus flavours, while the Quercus Robur will create a much darker shade and a flavour of dried spices, chocolate and citrus,” MacPherson says. “The combination of these two types of casks and what it creates gives us more opportunities.” While MacPherson jokes that he wasn’t around in 1824, he affirms that the maturing process is likely to be very much the same as it was 192 years ago. “Like most industries today, machinery has taken over some of the more arduous tasks, but fundamentally a cask that has been made now would have been the same in the 17th century.” Almost two centuries down and still counting, what does the future hold for The Macallan? “I think The Macallan as a brand has grown significantly in the last 15 to 20 years. It’s probably one of the largest single malts in the Scotch industry now,” MacPherson says proudly. “I like to think that with the popularity of the brand and the new emerging markets that there are worldwide, the brand will hopefully go from strength to strength and that consumers from all over the world will have the opportunity to sample our whisky. Things are looking very positive for the growth of The Macallan for the future.” Cheers to the next 192 years. themacallan.com

I

t’s just as well that Fiat has a heritage, because without the ultra-successful reimagination of the 500 city car, the company would probably be history by now. The current chic 500 brought the 1957 original up to date. To some it was a caricature of the car that put Italy on wheels, but clearly it’s worked… you see them everywhere, a classless confection that’s equally at home parked outside the opera as it is outside McDonald’s. Its sales have not only helped to save Fiat from almost certain bankruptcy, but the brand has now spawned another revival in the shape of the 124 Spider, a retro-look two-seat roadster that borrows the clothes and style of the 1966 original to wrap

thoroughly modern underpinnings. But it is not all it seems – this Spider is not quite as Italian as you might think. A few years ago, the Fiat Group and Mazda agreed to a joint venture that would see the Japanese company build a roadster for the Italians using its ultra-successful MX-5 as a base. This would be much quicker (and cheaper) than developing its own new rear-wheel drive chassis, and much more effective from a driving point of view than adapting an existing front-wheel drive platform. And it was originally slated to be a modern take on the Alfa Spider, as featured in the film, The Graduate. But then someone decided that an Alfa could/should only ever be built in Italy, so the rebodied Mazda became a Fiat. But this is far from a simple badge-engineered version of the all-conquering Mazda. It might share the same rear-wheel drive chassis and be built along the same lines as the MX-5. It might even be (unofficially) known in America – where the MX-5 is called Miata – as the Fiata. But there are significant differences between the two. The most obvious change is in the way it looks, for there are no body panels shared between Fiat and Mazda. The key elements of the new 124 Spider are the front grille, which mimics the shape of the original; the bonnet, which features the twin power bulges found on later versions of the first generation; and the squared-off rear wings that also ape the distinctive ‘swallowtail’ shape of the 1960s version. These changes mean the Fiat looks, and indeed is, a tad longer than the Mazda, with a slightly larger boot, while the result is a clever homage to the original. To these eyes at least, the 124 appears timeless, whereas the MX-5 is a little more anonymous and, ironically, is going to date quicker than the, er, pre-dated Fiat. There are more changes to be found under the bonnet. The Mazda offers a choice between a pair of naturally aspirated engines, a 1.5 and a 2.0-litre, but the 124 is powered by the Fiat-designed turbocharged 1.4 MultiAir unit. The Mazda offers 130hp and 160hp, which is split by the Fiat’s useful 140hp. This doesn’t give supercar-quick performance, though the 134mph top speed is probably more than enough for most people, but does return reasonable fuel economy: don’t push too hard on

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

a trip and you ought to see around 40mpg. More significantly, this engine has totally different characteristics in use. The Mazda gives instant responses but the engine gets a little fussy as you near the red line – which you’ll need to do if you want to extract all the available performance. Thanks to its turbo, the Fiat offers more mid-range punch, and while it is not as out-and-out quick as the 2.0-litre MX-5, it’s more measured, more comfortable and more user friendly. If you do want more performance from your Spider, however, you’ll need to wait a few more months until the arrival of the Abarth version, which promises 170hp from the same 1.4-litre engine. There are chassis changes, too. Although the basic suspension systems are the same, the Fiat’s chassis has been tuned to provide different characteristics: it’s not as sharp at the limit as the Mazda but rides better, enjoys more benign handling and overall is more forgiving. Essentially, it’s more of a grown up than the tearaway MX-5. One area that hasn’t changed greatly is the interior which, a few trim colours aside, is virtually identical to the Mazda. Not that that’s a bad thing, as the MX-5 dashboard is a model of how it should be done. Fiat has also borrowed the Mazda infotainment system in its entirety, a decision that, again, makes economic and practical sense. What Fiat hasn’t been able to do, however, is magic any more space in the cabin. It is, shall we say, compact… intimate even. There’s only just enough legroom for a six-foot plus passenger, though the driving position is just about perfect, especially the positioning of the stubby gear lever for snick-snick gear shifts. The snugness of the cockpit means there is precious little oddment space – and the pair of cup holders really look like an afterthought – but it does mean that the manual soft-top can be raised and lowered from the driver’s seat: unlock a central catch and then flip it backwards to lower, or reach behind your head to raise it. Takes seconds to do and there’s none of the extra weight or complexity of an electric system. The hood itself is a multi-layer canvas affair with a proper heated glass window and a reinforced central section for strength and added

motoring

refinement. Hood up, the car is commendably quiet, while with the roof lowered a pleasant hairruffling breeze enters the cabin rather than a wind tunnel force eight. Perhaps the best news is that the Spider is not going to break the bank. There is just one mechanical specification – turbo 1.4-litre engine, six-speed manual transmission – and three equipment levels. The Classica starts at £19,545, though you’ll need to add £500 if you want the sat nav that comes as standard in the £22,295 Lusso. Range topper is the Lusso Plus (£23,295), which adds adaptive LED headlamps, automatic lights and wipers, and a nine speaker Bose sound system – complete with speakers in both headrests – to the seven-inch infotainment system, rear parking camera, 17-inch alloy wheels and heated leather seats of the Lusso. For that you get an engaging drive in an affordable and practical two-seater that you really could live with all-year round. It has all the benefits of the donor Mazda, but with a distinct Italian twist. So if revisiting and updating its past is the way to a successful future, I’m certain Fiat is now looking at other models in its back catalogue that could handle a 21st-century remix. In which case, Fiat might be revisiting the glorious Fiat 130 Coupé, a classically elegant twodoor coupé that was born under the supervision of Italian styling house Pininfarina. If Fiat were to update that sympathetically, I’d buy one for sure.

I

f you’ve ever become ill once you’ve slowed down, you’re not alone. It’s called a ‘healing crisis’ apparently and happens when your body starts to dispel all of the toxins from your cells. Given a three-month sabbatical from work, I landed in Sydney during its autumn heatwave in April, shortly before being struck down by a bout of shivering cold. The downside? Obvious. I was virtually bed-bound for a week. The upside? Here you have a frank and omniscient view of the city’s best hotels, from the eyes of a patient – and of course, recommendations for what to do once you’re feeling better. I kicked off my stay at Park Hyatt Sydney, which happens to have the best view of the Harbour and Opera House in the whole of the city, being built directly on the curve of the waterfront, opposite the latter. The unobstructed view from the terrace shows the sun bouncing off the water, bathing everything in gold and blue. You can even pick out the postcard-worthy landmarks without leaving your king-size bed. The view is even more spectacular by night, when the coloured lights of the skyscrapers and fireworks from the evening shows, combined with the hum of the occasional boat, make the city feel alive. It will likely cost you twice the price of the other big hotels, but a stay here is absolutely worth it. It was here that Elton John holidayed – complete with a baby grand piano that was airlifted into his lounge. The hotel’s showpiece is a rooftop pool, with white parasols set in a beautiful sun-trap, flanked on one side by the arch of Sydney Harbour Bridge. Suites are smart, cosy and neutrally decorated –

expect big fluffy duvets, deep bathtubs and heated toilet seats. But what really helps when you’re unwell is the Park Hyatt’s butler service; my butler brought me some very welcome chocolate treats, homemade by the chef. Next, in keeping with the expression ‘feed a cold, starve a fever’, the Dining Room is a glasswalled lounge, well-suited to business breakfasts, as well as smart dinners. Choose the tasty bay scallops with celeriac, hazelnuts and apple buerre blanc, lightly seared and memorable, followed by the culinary equivalent of a hug: slow-cooked pork cheeks with mandarin, Jerusalem artichokes and red cabbage. That rich, saltiness that characterises the dish was present, with layers of flavour that were so good they competed with the gradual deadening of my flu-stricken tastebuds. When the low of your stay is not being able to drink the complimentary Champagne, you know you’ve had a great time. Thankfully, I’d recovered in time to check in to QT Sydney, and the boutique hotel has an entirely different character. A fun and a proud member of the Design Hotels franchise (designhotels.com), rooms at the QT are dramatic – I’m not sure I’ve ever seen quite so many black sheepskin rugs, or got dressed in moody darkness, but shocks of fuchsia, ’80s dance music in the lifts and lots of theatre props make this an entertaining destination for those dreaming of theatreland. It also happens to have an award-winning spa of its own within its walls. If sitting in an egg-style chair on top of a black, shaggy rug is your idea of relaxation (each to their own), you will love it. Park Hyatt Sydney

CANARY WHARF | 83

What you must do at QT is go for dinner. Gowings Bar & Grill is something of a rarity – a draw for the young and glamorous, but mature enough to serve wine in glasses rather than jam jars. Based on a European brasserie, an on-site rotisserie and wood-fire oven means plates groan with flavour. There’s a dedicated fish menu incorporating everything from tuna to a seafood pie of scallops and red snapper, and grill suggestions that include hearty portions of Australian sirloin served with golden chips and boats full of sauces. Service is friendly and the cocktail bar upstairs attracts a well-heeled crowd. The other hotel that you’ll hear a lot about in Sydney is The Old Clare. Set in a converted brewery administration building, its exposed brickwork, modernist furniture and the brilliance of its food (avocado fans – Kensington Street Social’s breakfast menu is for you), make it a lively hotspot that draws everyone to The Clare Bar for

drinks on a Friday evening. Choose a suite to make the most of staying here. The Abercrombie Room has a free-standing bathtub, while the Chippendale Loft has floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and the Showroom Suite a super king-size bed, antique furniture and bar. Although, don’t leave before trying out The Old Clare’s own rooftop pool. Recovered and having chosen a place to stay, the Bridge Climb (bridgeclimb.com) seems an obligatory rite of passage for both tourists and residents alike. Groups are harnessed to the inner walkways of the 134-metre steel landmark and tackle a relatively shallow ascent to its highest point to admire the views of the Harbour, Opera House and beyond. Alternatively, a more sophisticated way to see the cityscape is to drive or take a taxi to the heathcovered clifftops of North Head, from which the city centre looms across the blue water like an island, framed by jutting green land masses. It’s a lesser-known spot, and a quiet one – you’ll never be able to capture the beauty of it in a photo. Sydney is a great base for a trip to the Royal National Park to the south. Unmarked hiking trails take in forests, rookeries, lakes and beaches, as well as native flora and the odd pelican. The more challenging routes include the Curra Moors loop track, which transcends waterfalls and heath over the course of five hours, as well as allowing seasonal whale-watching as the track progresses south along the coast. It was one of the best experiences I had.

Within the city, Centennial Park offers its own dose of greenery – and history. The place of the inauguration of Australian Federation (and commemorated by a dedicated pavilion), the 189-hectare site had already been transformed into Victorian-inspired parkland, complete with ponds, gardens and wide avenues for carriages. Today you can walk, cycle and horse ride in the space, as well as take a drive through the rolling greenery, which is sometimes all you need to do in the sun. If it’s Sydney’s beach culture you’re seeking, the well-heeled skip Bondi in favour of time out at Balmoral. At first glance a picturesque but sleepy bay, it is a place where the wealthy moor small boats, own holiday homes, and eat fantastic fish and chips in the open air. Finally, because you should have a little black book in every city, seek out a great restaurant with good wine. Those in the know recommend Chiswick – a conservatory-style restaurant and bar in the upmarket suburb of Woollahra. You need only spot the black Mercedes in the car park to know you’re in good company. A place where men wear white linen suits, popular orders are locally reared lamb shoulder with pine nuts and steak tartare with quail’s egg and quinoa, all in a gardenlike environment set back from the road. A Provençal gem, even the most seasoned traveller will be stunned by Gordes. And where to stay while you’re there? katy parker locates the perfect spot

CANARY WHARF | 87

E

verybody knows that Provence is beautiful, right? Well, I didn’t. Or certainly not exactly how beautiful until I made a trip to Gordes, a fortified village perched in the heart of the Luberon area of the region. The village enjoys a privileged position on the southern edge of Plateau de Vaucluse, so wherever you are, you can appreciate sweeping views of the idyllic, unspoiled Provençal countryside and the mountain chain of Les Alpilles beyond. Undulating pasture, lush green forests, olive groves and, if you’re lucky, pockets of vibrant purple denoting the presence of lavender fields. Built around a 12th-century castle, the village is a vision of white and grey stone and cobblestone streets, with its houses rising up in a spiral around the rock, and the church and castle standing formidably at its peak. Cruising up the road leading to Gordes in our rental car, with the morning sun casting a romantic glow over the village’s beige stone, I am utterly entranced. As far as introductions to Provence go, they surely don’t get much better than this. Just one cursory glance over Gordes and its surrounding areas and you can see why the glitterati of Paris choose to spend their summers here, and why the area has housed its fair share of famous painters, including Marc Chagall, André Lhote, Jean Deyrolle and Pol Mara. It is a setting that could inspire the most amateur of artists. Our residence for the night, La Bastide de Gordes, is set on the hillside, and thoroughly capitalises on its prime location by ensuring that those picturesque panoramas are on display as much as possible. From our bedroom, the gardens, the swimming pool – which runs along the length of Bastide’s 12th-century ramparts – and the hotel’s vast terrace, vistas are in abundance. And believe me, they wow you every time. The hotel reopened in the summer of last year after a €15m renovation, but that doesn’t mean it has lost any of its old-world charm, with the design evoking that of an 18th-century Provençal castle. Our room is opulent but classic, with a real sense of history behind it; you feel as though – if they were to talk – the walls could tell a thousand stories. Regrettably, given the season, a swim in the outdoor pool isn’t an option, so upon arrival

we head straight to the spa, which is branded by Parisian label Sisley. Featuring a small pool and a Roman-style steam room and sauna, it is the perfect place to stretch our legs and unwind after the long drive. From the spa, we have a quick change, and then head downstairs for pre-dinner drinks. The upside to us not visiting in the summer is that – while we are unable to sunbathe and bask in the pleasures of the outdoor pool – we are able to sit and sip apéritifs by the fire. The jewel in the hotel’s culinary crown is the restaurant by Pierre Gagnaire – whose eponymous eatery in Paris has been awarded three Michelin stars – but we are dining in La Citadelle for this evening. Dine outside on the terrace if you want to enjoy your meal with views of the valley, or inside, where the stone vaulted ceiling and authentic decor cultivates an intimate, buzzy atmosphere. The menu is a showcase of Mediterranean and Provençal flavours, and we start with the lobster with bulgur wheat, apple and cauliflower – a strange combination perhaps, but one that really works. Our main dish of John Dory fillet with artichokes à la barigoule, glazed fennel and eggplant caviar is fabulously fresh and wellbalanced, and for dessert we opt for a French classic – tarte tatin with salted butter toffee icecream and Chantilly cream. It is a triumph. Feeling thoroughly well fed and watered, we amble upstairs, and after a glorious night’s sleep in our sumptuous bed – and one last look out the window – we reluctantly leave La Bastide de Gordes. I may be a bit late to the party, but Provence, you have stolen my heart – and I’m counting down the days until I can come back. Rooms start at €195 per night, bastide-de-gordes.com

Andr’e Dane Parchment As a boy growing up in the Caribbean, Andr’e taught himself to swim, exploring the turquoise waters and catching fish and lobster. Unafraid to dream of being an artist, he soon started his mobile Art and Graphic business working from anywhere and everywhere, from his father’s veranda to trees offering shade. Barbed wire fences became his roadside gallery, selling to tourists and locals passing by. danes-art.com

COMMUNITY WINDOW GALLERY The Community Window Gallery in Canada Place is devoted to exhibiting work by local arts projects.

Arnhem Wharf Primary School 10 November – 3 January

Year 3 pupils at Arnhem Wharf Primary School have been using their artistic skills to learn about stained glass. Working with Jane Rogers, a community artist based at Bow Arts, they took part in a series of workshops to create window panels in glass and coloured sheets. Their designs were inspired by their research in school and by visits to local churches.

SALES NICK MOORE, associate at Knight Frank Islington, comments on the trends in the residential sales market

A

lmost four months after the referendum, there are signs that demand in central London is starting to strengthen once again as the implications of our decision to leave the EU become clearer and buyers have started to realise that life goes on. It seems that for many, stamp duty is by far the most limiting factor in the market, especially in the £2m-plus bracket. However, the uncertainty surrounding Brexit has, in many cases, been a catalyst for overdue price reductions. These, combined with a favourable currency movement for buyers denominated in overseas currencies, has created added momentum in the market in recent months. Demand in lower price brackets remains stronger, and across the whole market, the total number of properties under offer was up by almost 40 per cent in the three months to August against the same period in 2015. This increased activity has yet to translate into higher transaction volumes, which remain down by almost a fifth compared to 2015 and is a sign that buyers remain cautious – the average number of days that a property remained on the market was 14 per cent higher between January and August this year than in 2015. In terms of price growth, in general it fell by just over two per cent across central London in the year to September. However, this decline wasn’t felt in every part of London and, again, Islington and the City fringe continued to buck the trend, registering a 3.6 per cent rise in the same period. Looking forward, we would hope that the strengthening we have seen in the market in recent months will continue through the autumn. Ahead of the autumn statement in November, there are already calls for Philip Hammond to cut the rate of stamp duty, and most would agree that if action is taken it would provide an injection of confidence and stability into the market, adding further strength to the market.

PROPERTY “Investor activity has bounced back following the stamp duty changes, though some agents report that many investors are looking to knock sellers down on their asking prices to make up for the additional stamp duty they now need to pay. New rental supply has held up despite concerns that the stamp duty changes would lead to less fresh stock.” - Sam Mitchell, head of lettings at Rightmove

GREY MATTER Everybody knows by now that grey is in – and this even extends to cookers. Everhot has created a new Dove Grey Range Cooker, which is the perfect shade to go in almost any kitchen. Everhot’s hand-built cookers are energy efficient, using less than half the energy of comparable range cookers, and the cooker gently warms a kitchen, creating a comfortable gathering space in a house. Everhot gives buyers the option of having an induction hob alongside the traditional hot plate, as well as a grill, so there are endless culinary opportunities, from charred vegetables to a slowroasted leg of lamb. With a wide choice of sizes and models, there’s an Everhot to suit everyone and every kitchen. From £7,100, everhot.co.uk

A EASY AS 123 Decorating your home doesn’t have to be hard work. You don’t have to trawl through hundreds of shops to find your perfect piece of furniture anymore – you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your sofa. Furnish.co.uk takes the stress out of interiors shopping by bringing a great selection of homeware right to your fingertips. Every product on the site is handpicked by the Furnish team, and there is a strong focus on quality, rather than quantity. A big advocate of independent designers, you might see something intriguing you wouldn’t find on the high street, to make your home look and feel extra special. We love these two focal pieces: the hand-carved solid teak bookcase is both functional and elegant, and can also work as a room divider, while the trolley with glass shelves adds an instant Mad Men feel to any room. Fill a decanter with scotch, place on the trolley and you’re ready to go. furnish.co.uk

THE PERFECT BLEND Transport your kitchen back to the 1950s with these recently launched Smeg appliances. The Slow Juicer gets the best out of your fruit and vegetables, providing the highest nutrition content and least amount of waste, and comes in the classic Smeg shades of cream, black and pastel blue. The blender is another great companion for a healthy lifestyle, if you’re looking to make smoothies and soups – however, it can also be used to mix cocktails if you are so inclined. Sold in black, silver, red, cream and pastel green, it’s a great way to add a little hint of colour to the room. smeguk.com

ugust and September were record months for both Knight Frank London and the Islington office. This has surpassed the cautious optimism after the EU referendum and the effects it would have on these usually busy months. The main area of demand we have seen has been below £1,000 per week; the usual City relocations have reduced their budgets from above £1,000 per week for 3-4 bedroom houses. The prime market, which has struggled for some time, has not been helped by this movement in tenants’ budgets, and with a healthy supply of these houses the position remains strongly in favour

“In the current climate, landlords need to be realistic when it comes to pricing” of the tenant. In my opinion, London still remains the capital of the world, and with the weaker sterling, corporate relocation continues to increase. Knight Frank saw growth with corporate relocation enquiries over the summer months post-Brexit, although at reduced rents. Although yields continue to remain low, the majority of our landlord investors are aware in this current market that the overall return of their investment is the most important factor. Net yields have fallen to around two per cent, and with tax changes, some property investors could see low profit margins, but compared with other investments and saving accounts it is still certainly the best option. In the current climate, landlords need to be realistic when it comes to pricing and consider reducing the price to be the most competitive and reflect the best value. Making this decision will quickly minimise the length of marketing time and void period, and will reduce the risk of ‘chasing the market’ as we move into the quieter months of the year.

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE: SPOTLIGHT ON Nine Elms

DIANA ALAM, Head of residential development sales, JLL Images for illustrative purposes only

Regeneration development at Nine Elms has attracted some negative attention in recent months based on a range of factors. Detractors object to many elements of the new residential development taking place on site, such as its scale, high prices, international ownership as well as elements of the design itself. But we believe this is unfair, so let’s have look at what is going on at central London’s largest regeneration project.

Understanding the Vision

The scale of the transformation taking place at Nine Elms is impressive to say the least. By 2025, across the whole development area, Londoners will see a new high-density town transform what was the last large-scale industrial estate in Zone 1. In real estate terms, this will include: • 20,000 + new homes • 3.2m sq ft of new office space, including new US and Dutch embassies • 2.3m sq ft of new retail space • 1,600 new hotel rooms • 30-acre linear park • Over three kms of riverside returned to public access and use • Schools, nurseries and community spaces • Two new underground stations • Footbridge

108 | CANARY WHARF

The development of Battersea Power Station – Europe’s largest and once most polluting brick building purchased by Malaysian developer SP Setia and Sime Darby in 2012 – is at the centre of this regeneration project and, when complete, will deliver 4,000 new homes. Supported by increased transport improvements with the extension of the Northern Line, accessibility across Nine Elms will improve dramatically, harnessing the placemaking opportunity for the benefit of all future residents, workers and visitors. Looking at market performance, sales volumes across the area have broadly doubled year on year, with a modest tapering in 2015 in line with slower market activity for all prime markets. Setting aside the particularly strong rate of sales in Q1 2013, including the record-breaking sales volumes of

Battersea Power Station Phase One (Circus West), this rate of growth is correlated with the growing number of residential schemes now progressing into sales and marketing phases across Nine Elms. From the launch of St James’s Riverlight scheme in early 2011, the number of residential developments that are actively being promoted has continued to climb; residential units in ten different schemes were for sale as of end H2 2015. Across Nine Elms, only the Riverlight scheme and Embassy Gardens Phase One have been completed, although Circus West at Battersea Power Station may complete in late 2016. This also means the area is beginning to welcome its first new residents; for example, Embassy Gardens Phase One is now over 90 per cent occupied. It is worth noting the delivery schedule across the regeneration area is expected to take up to two decades, which implies a sales rate of roughly 1,000 homes per annum. With current rates already ahead of this level, the risks of oversupply appear to be well-managed over the course of delivery in the area.

L&Q Quebec Quarter

Cambium, Southfields Cambium, by award-winning global developer Lendlease, is a sustainable new development in Southfields, introducing a collection of 55 townhouses and 55 apartments. Comprising an eclectic variety of three-, four- and fivebedroom townhouses, each with their own garden and private off-road parking space or garage, Cambium also includes a wide selection of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The development is centred around a newly created urban meadow featuring a 200-year-old oak tree, believed to have been planted by celebrated landscape architect, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. The development features energy-efficient LED lighting and air source heat pumps. Meanwhile, in addition to the highly sought urban village amenities of Southfields, and the nearby Putney High Street and Wimbledon Village, Cambium is only a short walk from Southfields Underground station. From here, residents can reach Earl’s Court in 12 minutes, Sloane Square in 19 minutes and Victoria in 23 minutes.

L&Q has launched the second phase of one-, two- and threebedroom apartments at Quebec Quarter, a collection of 151 private sale homes in the heart of Canada Water, one of the capital’s largest regeneration zones. Designed by Alan Camp Architects, Quebec Quarter offers an abundance of opportunities for outdoor living, with 65 per cent of the total site area dedicated to outdoor activities, including extensive communal grounds and play areas. Upperlevel properties incorporate extensive terraces with panoramic views across the surrounding cityscape. Inside, properties come with contemporary kitchens, complete with integrated top-of-the-range AEG appliances, pristine bathrooms with smart white sanitaryware by Roca, and a mixture of Oak Animoso flooring and luxurious carpets throughout. Jubilee Line services from Canada Water offer fast commuting times to stations in the City and the West End, including Canary Wharf in two minutes, Waterloo in six minutes and Bond Street in 12 minutes. The area is set to become even better connected following the completion of the proposed Brunel Bridge in 2020, which has now gained support from the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. A short walk from Quebec Quarter is the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, part of British Land’s Canada Water Masterplan, which will be undergoing a £34m redevelopment over the next five years. Prices for the first release of new homes at Quebec Quarter start from £560,000 for a one-bedroom apartment, £650,000 for a two-bedroom apartment, and £775,000 for a threebedroom apartment

The new apartments at Cambium are available from £429,950 and townhouses from £1.14m. For further details, or to book an appointment, contact 020 3817 7000 or visit cambium.london

uyers seeking a beautiful home with a riverside view will soon have a range of new properties to choose from, at Berkeley Homes’ Royal Arsenal Riverside development in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Waterfront III has now launched, the first in Royal Arsenal Riverside’s Waterfront series of homes to have balcony and terrace views of both the River Thames and the new Waterside Park. The 266 Manhattan Suites, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses are housed in an elegant 20-storey building by award-winning architects Allies and Morrison. Homes are spacious and light-filled, ranging in size up to 1,973 sq ft. Contemporary interiors by CID Interieur blend natural limestone and textured wood finishes with a muted colour palette and reflective surfaces, reminiscent of luxury yachts on the water. Residents at the new Waterfront III also gain exclusive access to a new spa facility, The Waterside Club. Combining

a 20-metre swimming pool, sauna and steam room, treatment room and gym, it is one of the largest facilities of its kind on a residential development in London. Additional benefits include a cinema room and 24-hour concierge service. Waterfront III residents will be served by excellent transport connections, including the on-site Elizabeth line (Crossrail) station. JLL has found that on average, residential prices around Crossrail stations will see seven per cent greater uplift between 2016-2020 compared with non-Crossrail stations, with Woolwich one of the areas set to benefit most from the new east-west route. There are also DLR and National Rail links in Woolwich, and residents can reach Canary Wharf in just eight minutes, Bond Street in 22 minutes and Heathrow in less than an hour. Waterfront III will also be accessible via boat, with the Thames Clipper collecting passengers from Woolwich Arsenal Pier and travelling to Greenwich, Canary Wharf and London Bridge, all in less than 30 minutes. From £427,500 for a Manhattan Suite
