s of 26 October, the James Bond film empire is now on its 24th instalment, inciting inevitable comparisons between Spectre and previous blockbusters. We are pleased to begin this issue by meeting Monica Bellucci, who joins the cast for the first time. She describes playing Lucia Sciarra, the widow of an assassin killed by Bond as “a sign that women deserve to be respected and considered beautiful at any age” as she becomes the agent’s latest temptress (p20). George Lazenby also offered us his opinion on Daniel Craig’s portrayal of James Bond, nearly four decades after he himself stepped into Bond’s shoes, when Henry Hopwood-Phillips met him in Switzerland earlier this year. The piece is part of our round-up of the breathtaking 007 filming locations that should be on your bucket list, including Bond author Ian Fleming’s beloved Jamaica (p86). Regardless of your interest in Bond trivia, be sure to take a look at a vision for the character’s home study, as imagined by London’s leading interior design talents from page 36. David Collins Studio in particular, surpassed itself – even enlisting the National Portrait Gallery – as the team built a full-scale model of 007’s private office, complete with rather fun wallpaper and a portrait of HM The Queen. Finally, in the spirit of espionage, and set to inspire debate, is Charlotte Phillips’ piece on fitness tracking in the workplace, amid news that companies in America have started encouraging their employees to wear wristbands monitoring their sleep, calorie intake and activity levels. How far do we go until HR decisions are made on the basis of step count? And is a free gym membership really worth compromising our privacy for? I’ll leave you to decide on page 94.

is for Bond, is for BELLUCCI

At 50, model and actress Monica Bellucci will become the oldest ever Bond girl when she stars alongside Daniel Craig in Spectre. She talks to Canary Wharf about industry ageism, beauty and a lifetime spent defying convention Words: Shaun Curran images: richard ramos

M

onica Bellucci is used to being the centre of attention. In her native Italy, where her films are awardwinning national treasures, she’s that much of a household name that fans have given her the deferential title “La Bellucci” and she is adored as one of the definitive muses of Italian cinema, spoken about in the same revered tones as Sophia Loren. Having been in the spotlight since she was just 13, the Italian beauty has sashayed down the catwalks of the international fashion capitals displaying her iconic combination of poise, sexual confidence and old school glamour. She’s appeared in countless luxury fashion campaigns and frequently tops lists of the world’s sexiest women. Still, little prepared her for the furore that ensued when it was announced that Bellucci was to become

the latest Bond girl in the forthcoming, long-awaited Spectre opus. It’s only the third time in the course of Bond history that 007’s leading lady will be played by an actress older than Bond himself (Daniel Craig is 47) and Bellucci’s casting raises the average age of Bond’s belle du jour significantly: previously his beautiful companions had a median age of 28. Of course, there’s nothing necessarily unique about diehard fans being up in arms over a casting choice. A new Bond adventure is always big news. The discussion, dissection and picking apart of cast, location, director, plot and title of the latest Bond film – often before anyone has seen so much as a speeding car or a gadget explode – is a quintessentially British hobby. Among that, the notion of the Bond girl – Bond’s love interest (in the loosest sense of the term) and the one who, more often than not, aides our daring hero overcome the

FEATURE

powers of evil – has been tickling our collective loins since Ursula Andress played Honey Ryder in the first Bond film, 1962’s Dr. No. In Sceptre, Daniel Craig will be reprising his role for his fourth and final time and Bellucci will portray Lucia Sciarra, the widow of an assassin killed by Bond. But it wasn’t Bellucci’s undoubted, timeless beauty, or indeed whether or not her CV stood up to scrutiny for the biggest role of her career that people were talking about. The focus

was the fact that at 50 years old, Bellucci would become the oldest ever Bond girl in the franchise’s history, a full 11 years older than the previous holder of that record, Honor Blackman, who was 39 years old when she starred alongside Sean Connery as Pussy Galore in 1964’s Goldfinger. In an industry that remains very much dominated by men both on and off screen, the decision to cast Bellucci is – archaic as it may seem – a brave one

CANARY WHARF | 21

that rails against perceived wisdom. Even Bellucci was surprised, admitting that when she got the call from director Sam Mendes, she assumed it was regarding taking over the 80-year-old Judi Dench’s role as M, the head of MI6, rather than being handed the baton held by Halle Berry and Eva Green. But Bellucci grasped the opportunity with both hands. She immediately praised Mendes, stating that two-time Bond director would be a “hero among women” for ensuring Bond finally fell for someone his own age. And even if she flinches at the label “Bond girl” – “I’d much prefer to be a Bond Woman or a Bond Lady” she said earlier this year – Bellucci sees her casting in a positive light. “I think it’s a sign that women deserve to be respected and considered beautiful at any age, we shouldn’t be made to feel as if we are no longer interesting or sexy at 50.” She continues, “Society shouldn’t place stereotypes on beauty. Women don’t stop being attractive or sensual simply because they get older.” Bellucci’s life and career have been an exercise in defying convention. Even before embarking on a diverse range of film roles – she starred as Mary Magdalene in Mel Gibson’s contentious The Passion Of The Christ, as well as in the brutal and much criticised Irréversible – Bellucci spent her youth desperate to prove she possessed both beauty and brains. Her modelling career took off while she was still a young teenager, but she continued to study law at the University of Perugia, often despite her tutors’ patronising attitudes.

“Women don’t stop being attractive or sensual simply because they get older” “When I was doing my final exams in Italy, my Greek professor was my examiner and he asked me very condescendingly: ‘What are you going to do with your life – are you going to be an actress or a TV presenter?’ It was his way of trying to humiliate me by suggesting that I had no business studying because of my looks. From his way of thinking, an actress didn’t need to do study or take her education seriously. Of course, the great irony is that I did become an actress.” Tutors be damned, Bellucci signed to Elite Model Management in 1988 but never forgoed her true passion for acting. A minor role in Bram Stoker’s Dracula proved to be her big break, and Bellucci

says “acting was my salvation,” rescuing her from modelling full-time. “Now, when I choose to do modelling, it is for important brands like Dolce & Gabbana and I’m very happy working with great photographers. But modelling was never my passion. You get tired of being noticed all the time. Acting gave me an opportunity to do something creative.” Now a global icon, and with two daughters from her marriage to former husband Vincent Cassel, Bellucci says she has struck the perfect balance between her career and personal life as she prepares for the critical appraisal of Spectre. “This is a beautiful and rich period from a professional point of view,” she says. “I’m a mother, so I don’t have much time to rest. I try to be as organised as I can and I won’t work on more than two films each year so I can be with my children as much as possible. But I feel very energised right now and I’ve gained the kind of wisdom over the years where I’m able to appreciate all the beautiful and small things that are part of everyday life.” Spectre is in cinemas from 26 October 2015

photographer richard ramos on monica bellucci What wasthe aim for this photo shoot? “I intended to shoot a fashion story with Monica Bellucci and simply focus on her amazing beauty. She’s perfect for that.” How was she different to how you imagined? “Monica radiated something I have witnessed very few other times – I don’t know what to call it – ‘starhood’. She was definitely taller than I expected.” How long did the shoot take? “With some stars it’s sometimes tricky as they have busy schedules; we were lucky to have Monica Bellucci for about four hours.” What advice would you give to an aspiring professional photographer? “Work hard and be critical of your own work, most people won’t tell you what they really think of it – they’ll probably try to be gentle and please your ears.” Photographer Richard Ramos is represented by Enri Mür Management enrimur.com/richard-ramos

Trade Secret New collection Secrets by Harry Winston pays tribute to the company’s enigmatic founder who, due to an unusual clause in his insurance policy, was forbidden to show his face to the public and was therefore often pictured as a silhouette. Each piece subsequently has its own secret element, such as the Winston Cluster bracelet, which features an emerald discreetly hidden behind the house’s iconic motif. Many of the 29 pieces have also been cleverly designed to be worn in more ways than one. The Secret Wonder revolving medallion necklace, for instance, has been set with round and pear-shaped diamonds on one side but when spun round, it reveals sapphires, aquamarines and diamonds. Shape shifter Following the release of the newest Clé de Cartier, first previewed at SIHH this year, Louise Rose takes a closer look at the maison’s most ergonomic model to date

A

golden key can open any door, as the saying goes and, while Parisian joaillerie and horology house Cartier (which dates back to 1847) has a clientele that includes some of the world’s most affluent and discerning individuals, its heritage has been underpinned, from the start, by an unrivalled attention to design. Indeed, when it comes to its iconic watches, the company has

you, Cartier Crash – although true enthusiasts may describe this venture as more an aesthetic exercise in savoir-faire than a full product departure). The creation of a Cartier timepiece is always a quasi-architectural exercise; every model is characterised by strong lines and a distinctive form. Now joining the rectangular Tank, the square Santos and the perfectly round Ballon Bleu is the curved, ergonomic Clé (meaning key). Available in three diameters – 40, 35 and 31mm – there are 22 models within the new line but they all sit flush against the wrist and boast the same fluid silhouette. As Laurent Clé de Cartier watch, Feniou, managing director 31mm in 18-karat pink gold with diamonds, of Cartier UK, explains, Eric Maillet © Cartier the Clé is “both timeless and versatile. Intrinsic to Cartier’s history as a creative watchmaker is our spirit of innovation. A pioneering ethos that is reflected in this new shape.” The tactile, smooth case design is inspired by the simple circle, but what instantly stands out is the winding crown, or key, one

“The winding crown, or key, is aesthetically, practically and acoustically pleasing” always been keen, and able, to straddle two camps. Its timepieces appeal both to those classicists who appreciate a concise selection of watches that have stood the test of time and to those with an eye for innovation, who may Clé de Cartier watch, lean towards the wackier 40mm in 18-karat pink gold, Eric Maillet © models (we’re looking at Cartier Left: Clé de Cartier watch, 40 mm in 18-karat white gold, Eric Maillet © Cartier

of the most distinctive features of the Clé de Cartier, where the sparkling sapphire is being ‘crown guarded’ by the long and sleek case band. Although the use of this precious blue stone is also a feature of many of Cartier’s classic watches, this is the only point of similarity with the Clé. This redesigned approach to setting the time and date, in the form of this pivoting, meticulously-designed key, is a standout feature, so much so that it has inspired its product name. Operating the key is easy: simply pull the crown and turn it to set the time and date, and you’ll hear a very satisfying ‘click’ when it is returned to its original position. This is something Cartier passionately describes as “a reassuring sound that enhances the sensorial experience… a sound with echoes of congeniality, quality and the complex inner workings of the finest timepieces”. While for some it may take getting used to, turning something rectangular as opposed to round, it is aesthetically, practically and acoustically pleasing. In its resting state, the pivoting key sits astride the case and its unique construction negates the possibility of accidentally moving the hands once set. When looking at all 22 models within the new watch line, the dial remains a constant feature (although, in true Cartier style, the women’s models mostly have diamond accents). Hands are blue steel to complement the signature jewel in the crown, while dials are all fairly classic in their design, boasting an opalescent guilloché centre, surrounded by a pearl-white outer rim. Roman numerals are painted in a rich, traditional shade of blue, again nodding to the signature sapphire, while the six o’clock marker is replaced by a subtle aperture for the date. The guilloché centre extends here, bordering the date in a wave motif. As well as the dial, case and key, the Clé de Cartier also boasts a new in-house, self-winding movement developed by Cartier, which has a 42-hour power reserve and effectively takes the place of the ébauche ETA movements, on which the maison formerly relied. Both a technological and design triumph for one of the most established watchmaking houses in the world, we’re pretty sure that we are just getting a taste for the shape of things to come, if you’ll pardon the pun. tray Martini glasses. A gentleman’s briefcase. A portrait of HM The Queen. The character of James Bond is not a man that leaves anything to chance: his study must be worthy of the style and secret-keeping that he is renowned for. When asking four well-known interior design firms to produce a 2015 design for the home office of the fictional agent, we were met with excitement – and plans on an enormous scale befitting of the Bond legend. Here, the creative directors explain all:

s a discerning character, James Bond would need an elegant study with classic and timeless references, and a bold personality to reflect its owner. The room would reference his vocation as the most important member of the Secret Service but at the same time, a man who is under the radar and one who enjoys the great pleasures and extravagances of life. David Collins Studio would offer a design that would be tailor-made to his needs and unique to his character. It would incorporate bespoke elements into the design, and a masterly mix of antique and modern features, as well as a layered edit of materials and references. James Bond is a man who is refined, well-travelled and well educated – the study would need to reflect Bond’s idiosyncrasies and trademarks. The Studio’s vision is to take a strong colour, British Racing Green, and use this as a basis of almost everything within the study. The tone on tone, and texture on tone approach would give the study a rich and characteristic look. The design is intentionally low-tech and mixes pieces from many 20th century periods. [A sense of uniqueness] would be realised through the use of colour, materials, pattern and coveted collectables – green enamel, metal, green velvet, marbling, precious stones and gold. There would also be a juxtaposition of old and new in the use of Prouvé, while gadgetry is left to a few essential pieces of spy equipment. We collaborated with the artist, Chris Levine, on a few projects about ten years ago and have always loved and admired his work. This piece [Equanimity (2012)] in particular draws relevance from Her Majesty’s Secret Service and James Bond, and so we feel that it is very much befitting of this project, and I love its depth and drama. For this type of project we would have myself as creative director to oversee the concept and work closely with the client to accomplish the design; a senior designer who would ensure that the initial idea is realised into a feasible, practical and considered scheme, and who would also liaise with the consultants and on-site teams; and a design team who would be responsible for collating the materials and finishes in addition to creating the technical drawings. This core group would then work with a number of other teams within The Studio – including stylists and art consultants –

to help bring the project to fruition. We focus on and analyse every detail to achieve the best result. This study is cultured, charming and witty – all traits of the owner. It is a personal statement, a

refuge for comfort and thought – a practical space reflective of British craftsmanship. James Bond is a man who appreciates exceptional quality, which is a value shared by David Collins Studio. This study would be at home in James Bond’s fictional Chelsea apartment.” Simon Rawlings, creative director, David Collins Studio, 0207 835 5000; davidcollins.com

ames Bond is a bit of an enigma. His job dictates his lifestyle and his home would be a fantastic blend of concealed high-tech gadgetry and a classic English clubhouse aesthetic. In many ways, 007 epitomises masculinity with his wardrobe, cars, his profession and his women. Therefore, for me, the secret agent would need a tailored look – and that’s something I try to apply to all of my interiors projects. I visualise interiors like a piece of clothing; it is suited to the wearer, detailed and has many layers. There are some things you just can’t get past with James Bond, like his self-assuredness, his sense of style and his nationality. I would see the space as a richlyappointed room with traditional moments, and it would feel formal without being at all uncomfortable. Wood panelling is a really strong way to reinforce the English clubhouse layer, and I imagine it would be a perfect way to conceal any of James Bond’s gadgets and

secret access points. I would also use a striking, custom-patterned wool carpet underfoot in dark tones. Furniture would have to include deep leather armchairs. A large, classic leather-bound desk would be essential too. I would introduce accessories on bookshelves in metal or marble finishes – maybe these could be some of the Secret Service gadgets. As with all James Bond’s dealings I’m afraid details of cost are deeply shrouded in secrecy. To betray the confidence of MI6 would be a careerlimiting move! However, should Her Majesty have change from £1m in her purse at the end of this exercise I would be surprised. If I was charged with designing the interior of James Bond’s apartment, he could rest assured that it would be a perfect fit.” Founder, Greg Natale Design +61 02 8399 2103 gregnatale.com

“I

think I’d be a very good designer for James Bond, because my design would be quintessentially English but with a sense of humour and a kind of quirky twist or kick to it. I’m seeing a lot of wood and a bit of leather: Bond’s study would be very masculine, cool and contemporary. He is constantly reinventing himself so I don’t imagine an old-fashioned type of office with big fat leather-clad Chesterfields and armchairs – that would have been the case 50 years ago. The private space in James Bond’s apartment, overlooking the Houses of Parliament, would have a dual purpose; it would be a place where at a moment’s notice he could quickly change the room by pushing a button and be on Skype with M on big screens. However, James Bond has to be very discreet about the nature of his work so that element would have to be concealed when he invites ladies

back to his home for a cocktail. He’d require some kind of hidden arsenal for all his weapons and bits of Q technology such as the fountain pens and watches. There would also be a concealed illuminated map of the world displaying all the hot spots of international intrigue and espionage. The design would be done in a very elegant way with lots of books you pull over [hatches] and buttons to reveal the kit that goes with being a spy. There might be a big picture with him and the Prime Minister, but other than that [the presence of his career] would be subtle. James Bond needs to remain modern and fresh rather than a character in a book. I think a project such as this would cost between £60,000 and £80,000.” Founder, David Carter Interior Design 0207 790 0259; alacarter.com

ames Bond? He wouldn’t receive any special treatment from me, regardless of my shaking knees. My approach would be to work through his needs and style preferences, with the help of samples and images – while quaffing champagne, of course. His secure city pad would include furniture arranged spaciously in case of a quick exit and accessories that double as weapons such as a spear lamp. Natural, cold materials for wall decoration would show strength and be his armour. I’d use navy and dark grey with bronze and chrome.” Founder, NW3 Interiors 020 7209 4442; nw3interiorsltd.com

Outerwear for autumn T

he new collection from Aquascutum offers updates to its tailoring line including blazers, crew-neck sweaters, twill trousers and single-breasted trench coats, worn without belts. With a brief to add a little British eccentricity into the range, its design team have also cast accessories such as umbrellas, scarves and ties in its house check print. Tim Walker, who shot the advertising campaign, sought unlikely inspiration in the form of comedy duo

Morecambe & Wise for its autumnal imagery. The brand’s senior womenswear designer Kasha Crampton who counts A/W 15 as her first official collection, says of the range: “Rainwear and coating remain as the brand’s specialised core product, and the pieces continue to possess the elegance and timelessness that is held in the nostalgia about Aquascutum. The brand is much more about style than fashion.” Aquascutum, Cabot Place, aquascutum.com

s James Bond returns to the big screen this month for another slice of the action, we take a look at some of the brands helping to create the secret agent’s suave image on screen. Being associated with Bond and the films that bring him to life has proven

lucrative for many, with niche labels quietly going about their business finding themselves thrust into the spotlight, and British brands able to showcase high-quality manufacturing to a much bigger audience than may ordinarily take notice. Here, we countdown some of our favourite 007 staples, past and present.

n. peal Since niche British cashmere brand N. Peal dressed Bond in an unassuming green sweater in Skyfall in 2012, the brand’s male audience has significantly increased. When Daniel Craig was identified as wearing the lightweight 70 per cent cashmere and 30 per cent silk blend turtle neck in a poster for the latest film, it too caused a stir and swiftly became unavailable on the website. Balancing traditional dyeing and yarn-spinning techniques with modern-day computerised knitting techniques ensures luxurious fabrics with a modern fit.

Sunspel Perhaps not the most visible product throughout the film, Bond is nonetheless sporting Sunspel underwear in Spectre. Having provided polo shirts in the past – the specially created Riviera style was worn by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale – Bond clearly elevates the brand when it comes down to choosing essentials worthy of a seriously skilled seducer.

The Casino Royale Dress Shirt, £245, Turnbull & Asser,

Bond author Ian Fleming was reportedly a customer of the royal warrant-holding shirtmaker, so it’s a fitting tribute that Bond has donned its tailored wares on more than one occasion. For Dr. No, Sean Connery was advised to wear his outfits to bed to get familiar with them, 44 years before Daniel Craig sported a white dress shirt in Casino Royale: thanks to the increased intensity in modern-day action scenes, Craig went through numerous shirts during filming.

Its top spy-worthy quality is the LiquidMetal® 12-hour scale which can keep time with anywhere in the world.

James Bond wore the sky blue Setter swim shorts by Orlebar Brown in the last film Skyfall, as seen in the Shanghai swimming pool scene – filmed in the Four Seasons Hotel in Canary Wharf. The style, tailored using inspiration from a traditional 17-piece pattern of a suit trouser, has endured ever since. Look out for the style’s A/W 15 graphic print makeover from Italian architect and artist, Marcello Morandini.

Crockett & Jones It’s good to see Bond getting behind another classic British brand, and back once again to serve the spy, Crockett & Jones was responsible for providing Bond’s Spectre shoe wardrobe. The six styles featured include the plain black Radnor boot, its heavy-duty commando rubber sole suitable for Bond in action mode, and the more elegant Norwich and Alex shoes in black calf leather.

Responsible for the mainstay of the Bond wardrobe in Spectre, Tom Ford also provides gentlemanly accessories, from pocket squares and bow ties to its Hugh sunglasses, to complement the range of outfits seen in the film. From an evening look which sees Bond back in white, sporting the Windsor ivory single-breasted dinner jacket, to a quilted cardigan jacket with ribbed knitted sleeves, paired with gabardine ski pants, Tom Ford has ensured Bond tackles every situation impeccably dressed. MR PORTER launched a timely selection of pieces from the brand on its website in September. mrporter.com

No.89 eau de toilette, £75, Floris, florislondon.com

Floris Although not visible in the films, No.89 by Floris is said to have been a favourite fragrance of the original James Bond book series author Ian Fleming, and a number of references to the British heritage brand can be found in the novels. The woody, citrusy aroma lends itself to a whole collection. Bond has been spotted using a wooden shaving bowl in a previous film, so the No.89 edition with brush is the perfect match.

The ever-adventurous Bond inevitably finds himself in the mountains on occasion, and Spectre sees him kitted out in the latest high-tech alpine eyewear from Vuarnet. Born from a partnership between an optician and an alpine skier, the brand specialises in the use of mineral lenses – the same as NASA uses in its telescopes – made in Paris. Bond sports the Glacier frame, a sporty aviator style made from lightweight metal and top-class Italian Mazzucchelli acetate, out in three new colours this season.

“Over the course of an hour-and-a-half, the aim is to match a fragrance to a client’s personality” It’s not what you think. Somewhere between commissioning a bespoke scent (Cartier will charge you upwards of £15,000 for a consultation with its in-house perfumer Mathilde Laurent) and a liberal spritz of fragrance in a department store,

Penhaligon’s aims to extend the art of perfumery to the selection process at its boutiques, the newest of which has just opened in Canary Wharf. Over the course of an hour-and-a-half, the aim is to match a fragrance to a client’s personality, choosing from around 40 own-brand scents, including the famed Blenheim Bouquet (Winston Churchill’s favourite) and Hammam, a heavy oriental scent described by fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi as smelling like “everyone’s ideal grandfather.” Clayforth is incredibly knowledgeable, able to tell me the individual components in each perfume (rather than just whether it belongs to the citrus, floral or oriental family) as well as which perfumer made it, which notes evaporate first, and how each person’s skin reacts differently to them. The perfumes are almost entirely manufactured in the UK,

in keeping with the traditional English heritage of the business, which was founded by William Henry Penhaligon in London in 1872, and was handed down to his son Walter. Then, as now, the fragrances use only the best quality ingredients. Some, like oud, give a fabulous depth and richness but are incredibly expensive, and Penhaligon’s prices range from £50 to £150 per bottle. Clayforth sprays each scent on a testing strip and waits for the alcohol top notes to wear off. For me, it’s a visceral experience: I can’t articulate why I like a particular smell; simply that I do or don’t. “A scent should match a personality”, he says, “– either yours or the one you wish you had. Some are dynamic and loud. Some are sensual, or fresh, or outgoing.” In between fragrances, I sip mineral water in order to cleanse the palate, before we move on to discussing my relationship with fragrance: how often I wear it, and what I like about it. The profiling is an evocative, luxurious experience; I think I’ve been ‘doing’ fragrance wrong. As we test different blends, I rub my wrists together after spraying – a no-no, says Clayforth, as it won’t last as long on the skin. I also don’t store my perfume somewhere cool and dark, or as he recommends, “like fine wine.” If you do, then a perfume should keep its scent for around three years. After several fragrances, my favourite remains the first one I tried – the light, floral and girly Empressa. I leave with a bottle, feeling transformed by the profiling experience. Clayforth says perfume is a combination of architecture, poetry and high science and as with all the Penhaligon’s

He set up a barber’s shop on Jermyn Street in the 1860s, before expanding into fragrances. The Macallan Rare Cask

One of the world’s most select single malt whiskies has released a new expression: The Macallan Rare Cask. With Scottish heritage and a refined distilling process, this latest The Macallan is crafted from 16 different casks WORDS: charlotte phillips

T

he Macallan has launched its latest expression in the UK – The Macallan Rare Cask. The whisky has been matured in handmade Spanish and American oak casks that have their own aroma. The result is a woody whisky, with sweet notes of apple, lemon, and orange balanced by fragrant spices, root ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. With a rich mahogany red hue, The Macallan Rare Cask demonstrates the heritage brand’s commitment to wood casks and natural colour. Rare Cask has been crafted from whiskies selected from 16 individually different casks profiles – the most ever used in a single The Macallan whisky and many of the casks will not be used again. Bob Dalgarno is the Master Whisky Maker responsible for creating Rare Cask. “Each of the cask styles result in different character,” he says, “so each imparts their own

distinct influence on the final whisky.” To date, the most widely available expressions of The Macallan in the UK come from The 1824 Series which includes The Macallan Gold, The Macallan Amber, The Macallan Sienna and The Macallan Ruby. The Macallan was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. It was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be legally licensed. The Macallan estate is set on 390 acres of land bordering the River Spey and on which sheep and cattle graze. The Macallan is widely considered one of the best whiskies in the world, and has appeared in James Bond films including Skyfall. FOOD FOR FALL As the days get shorter, nights get chillier and we gravitate towards warming, rich foods, we take a look at what our favourite chefs most love about autumn WORDS: CHARLOTTE PHILLIPS

FOOD & DRINK

I

n Canary Wharf, we’re spoilt for choice with restaurants. We have an abundance of cuisines from across the globe, with famous chefs who are passionate about their craft. Autumn brings with it new produce, desires and opportunities. Whether our chefs are inspired by a childhood memory or enjoy recreating a family favourite, each offer up their top recipe to try at home.

Tom Aikens

Founder, Tom’s Kitchen “I still remember the smell of the leaves from the beech trees in our garden in autumn. We would have huge bonfires in the garden, and, boys being boys, we’d collect conkers for regular conker fights – I absolutely hated losing. Foodwise, we would always have a huge pot of stew

bubbling away at the weekends, always served with a big bowl of mashed potato. Autumn is always an exciting time for a chef. The best thing for this season is game and we are very lucky to have such a diverse amount available. The most important part of being a chef is the ability to be creative with the list of foods that are to hand. From this you can start to make up your menu, looking at all the fruit, vegetables, meat and fish and then combining flavours and tastes that illustrate the best tastes of the autumn season. My top three things to eat in autumn are wild game, chestnuts and quince, and there’ll be lots of autumn ingredients on the menu at Tom’s Kitchen: turnips, pears, beetroot, wood pigeon, cauliflowers, sea bass, venison, figs, turbot, elderberries, goose, onions, fresh haddock and squid, to name a few.” Westferry Circus, tomskitchen.co.uk

recipe: Pumpkin, Ricotta & Ginger Tart

Serves four

Pumpkin Puree • 200g of rough diced pumpkin • 25g of shallots • A knob of butter • 150ml of double cream • 10g of ginger, grated • 1 pinch of salt • 3 pinches of pepper

• 1 pinch of salt • 3 pinches of pepper • 100g ricotta cheese

Pumpkin & Ricotta • 100g of 2cm diced pumpkin • 15ml of olive oil • 2 sprigs of picked thyme

Pastry • 125g plain flour • 1 pinch of salt • 2-3 tbsp cold water • 55g butter, cubed

Filling • 50g crème fraiche • 50ml whole milk • 50ml double cream • 2 eggs

1. For the puree, peel and de-seed the pumpkin and cut into a rough cube. Sweat off the shallots in the butter, add the squash and ginger and gently cook for approximately five minutes in an oiled pan. Add the cream and cook until the pumpkin is tender, then strain off the cream and blend the squash to a purée, adding back some of the strained cream if needed to give it a smooth consistency. 2. To make the pastry, put the flour and salt in a large bowl and add the cubes of butter. Rub the

butter into the flour until you have a mixture that resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in just enough of the cold water to bind the dough together. Wrap the dough in clingfilm and chill for ten to 15 minutes before using. 3. To cook the pumpkin, peel and dice it then place in a large bowl. Dress with olive oil, thyme and seasoning, place on a large tray and cover with foil. Cook at 160°C until tender. Crumble the ricotta and leave to one side until ready to assemble the tart filling. 4. To make the main filling, whisk all the ingredients together in a large bowl. 5. To assemble, line four individual tart tins with the pastry, then pour one tablespoon of the pumpkin purée in the bottom of each tin and spread it around. Sprinkle the cooked pumpkin and ricotta over the top of the purée, then pour in the filling. Add the final small spoonfuls of the pumpkin purée on top of the pumpkin and ricotta, and garnish with the thyme. Bake the tarts in the oven at 160°C for 15 minutes.

Daniel McGarey Head chef, Plateau

“Growing up, we used to have beautiful scenery in Wiltshire, especially when the leaves started turning golden brown. I love braised dishes; there is a lot of skill involved. This beef bourguignon is one of the first dishes I ever learned how to cook and over the years I have been adding and changing little elements of the dish. It’s warming, and demonstrates how we get to use some of the best produce at this time of year. In autumn, game such as grouse also has such a beautiful flavour. I also love to eat wild

mushrooms, as I love going out with my dogs and foraging, and pumpkin is perfect for soups. I draw inspiration from what’s in season and using past experiences. It’s always important to keep trying different combinations with ingredients. Sometimes, we find an unusual combination that works, such as the famous chocolate and venison.” Canada Place, plateau-restaurant.co.uk

recipe: Braised Beef Rib Bourguignon Serves six • 5 trimmed bone on beef short ribs • 9 carrots – 5 cut into 2-inch pieces, 4 cut into 1-inch rounds • 5 celery sticks, cut into 2-inch pieces • 5 medium onions, quartered • 10 garlic cloves • 1 bottle dry red wine • Salt

• freshly ground pepper • 1 tbsp harissa paste • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 6 beef stock to cover • 100g smoked bacon lardons • 3 bay leaves tied with 15 thyme sprigs • 100g girolles • chopped flat-leaf parsley, for garnish

1. Mix the beef, two-inch carrot pieces, celery, onions, garlic and red wine. Refrigerate overnight. 2. Preheat the oven to 300°C. Strain the beef and vegetables over a bowl; reserve the wine. Separate the meat from the vegetables. Pat the meat dry and season with salt and pepper. In a large casserole dish, heat the olive oil. In batches, sear the meat over high heat until

browned on all sides for 30 minutes; transfer the meat to a bowl. 3. Reduce the heat, add the marinated vegetables and cook until softened for eight minutes. Add the reserved wine, stock, large bacon pieces, herbs and meat along with juices; bring to a simmer. 4. Braise the stew in the oven for three-and-a-half hours, until the meat is tender. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the meat and bacon to a bowl. Strain the liquid, discarding the solids. 5. Wipe out the casserole dish. Add the lardons and crisp over moderately high heat for ten minutes; transfer to paper towels. Working in batches, add the mushrooms to the casserole and cook until golden, eight minutes per batch. Add the mushrooms to the meat. 6. Add the carrot rounds and braising liquid to the pot and simmer until the liquid is reduced by one-third. Add the meat, bacon, lardons and mushrooms; simmer until the sauce reduces slightly. Season with salt and pepper, let cool and refrigerate overnight.

Group executive chef, Roka “My favourite autumn memory is picking porcini mushrooms first thing in the morning in North Canterbury. I have always loved eating different varieties of mushrooms as you can create some really interesting dishes. My other favourite things to eat in the autumn are mackerel and shellfish as the water cools. Inspiration comes in all forms: from the seasons, reading books, childhood memories, things you can see just walking down the street – it’s about surroundings and memories.” Park Pavillion, rokarestaurant.com

recipe: Mushroom Kamameshi Serves four • 130g washed and dried rice • 300ml dashi • ½ piece aburaage (fried tofu) • 1 tablespoon mushroom miso paste • 15g each of nameko, shiitake, shimeji, eryngii and oyster

mushrooms • 3g ginger, cut into julienne • 2 pinch dried shiso leaves • 15g shiitake mushroom toasted on teppanyaki • 3g ginger juice • Shiso cress

1. Combine the rice and half the dashi, aburaage and mushroom miso paste into a kamameshi pot (use a small pan with a lid if you don’t have a kamameshi pot). 2. Bring to a boil and stir, cover and simmer for three minutes on low heat. 3. Turn up the heat for one minute and allow the rice to toast slightly on the edges. 4. Remove from the heat, cover and steam for a further ten minutes. 5. Place the mushrooms in a separate pan and lightly toast, add the remaining dashi then bring to the boil and thicken with arrow root or corn starch. 6. Pour the mushrooms over the cooked rice. 7. Finish with the ginger, dried shiso and fresh shiso leaves. 8. Present the kamameshi then stir the topping through the rice.

Eastern Promise Food. Trees. Hot springs. Taipei might be Asia’s most laid-back capital. When planning your next trip, don’t overlook the Taiwanese city, says Cathy Adams

P

lay the word association game with ‘Taiwan’ and the first answer will usually be ‘electronics’. Then spend a weekend in this little green island nation, flung off the southern Chinese coast, and play the same game. The answer will probably be somewhere nearer ‘food’, ‘lush’ or ‘more food’. Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, is all these things. Its nearest mega-urban neighbours – Hong Kong and Shanghai – feel more than just 500 miles from its

low-rise, laid-back surroundings. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t tick all the usual boxes for an Asian metropolis: cosmopolitan communities, pulsing street life and ritzy surroundings all come as standard. First, there’s the historic side to the city. Taipei’s National Palace Museum houses an extraordinary collection of artifacts, showcasing more than 10,000 years of Chinese history, while the leafy Shilin Official Residence offers an almost untouched lens into the life of former political leader Chiang Kai-Shek.

travel

Then, the cultural side. Taipei has some districts that wouldn’t look out of place in more well-known creative hubs around the world such as London’s Shoreditch, New York’s SoHo, or all of Berlin. There’s the mega five-storey bookstore Eslite on Dunhua South Road, which has a 24-hour revolving door of locals, students and tourists thumbing pages. When they’re not reading every single book in the store, they’re buying fresh flowers and trinkets from the boutiques downstairs. Then there are the low-slung factory-warehouses-turned shops, performance spaces and art galleries of Huashan

“Ignore anybody who tells you Hong Kong or Singapore is the food capital of Asia. It’s rightly Taipei” 1914 Creative Park, which continues to draw Taipei’s brightest and most artistic minds. Finally, the food. Ignore anybody who tells you Hong Kong or Singapore is the food capital of Asia. It’s rightly Taipei, with its myriad night markets serving every kind of street food imaginable skewered on xiochi (skinny wooden sticks) – whether it’s a jumbo chilli sausage or sautéed octopus. Taipei’s speciality is pungent tofu (avoid at all costs – you can smell it coming) or beef noodle broth, a dish so celebrated that it even enjoys an annual festival dedicated to it. Eating and drinking: restaurants run the full gamut of cuisine, from the rough-and-ready street food in the narrow alleyways of Shillin night market, to the full-on Cantonese blowout at the Mandarin Oriental’s Ya Ge dim sum restaurant. For a traditional Taiwanese experience, book a table at Shi-Yang Culture Restaurant, high up in

the mountains of Taipei’s Yangminshan National Park. There’s no dress code, no stuffy atmosphere – simply take off your shoes and sit cross-legged on a tatami mat. It’s a peaceful, beautiful place to spend an evening, and the food will continue to arrive even after you’re truly stuffed. For something more high-octane, make a reservation at Shin Yeh 101, at the top of Taipei 101 – once the highest building in the world – which serves traditional Taiwanese food in the most vertiginous of settings. Where to stay: The Mandarin Oriental Taipei opened last year as one of the capital’s few super luxury hotels. An urban retreat in the middle of the capital, it’s a vast, glitzy building with art decostyled rooms and suites and an array of top-class restaurants to boot. Don’t leave without eating at the vibrant Italian Bencotto (which also does a neat line in innovative cocktails) or checking into the vast spa for a Formosa massage – meaning ‘beautiful island’ – which derives its name from the original moniker for Taiwan. Canary Wharf recommends: As an antidote to buzzy street life downtown, Taipei is blessed with natural hot springs on the fringes of the city, concentrated in the suburb of Beitou. But rather than share a pool with the rest of the city’s day-trippers, indulge in a private bath. The Grand View Resort Beitou hotel has installed hot spring relaxation rooms with stone baths on a hidden terrace. It’s still a natural experience, if slightly more refined. After 48 hours here, that balance sums up the city pretty well. Rooms at the Mandarin Oriental start from £249 a night, on a room-only basis mandarinoriental.com/taipei For more information on Taiwan, visit http://eng.taiwan.net.tw

From Europe’s finest cities to postcard-perfect tropical beaches, Ian Fleming’s hero finds himself in some of the world’s most dramatic destinations. Why not follow in his footsteps? Two writers did, and bumped into former 007, George Lazenby, in the process Words: Angelina Villa-Clarke

THE WORLD IS NEARLY ENough MEETING 007 flew to Switzerland, the setting for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and met its former James Bond star, George Lazenby Henry Hopwood-Phillips

W

e’re late. “What’s the collective noun for Bond girls?” hacks can be heard asking each other as they approach Mürren’s Hotel Eiger for the launch of the 007 Walk of Fame. I’ve missed the press conference for the stars of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, filmed mostly on the mountain above us, which sounds

bad – but to put it in context, I almost got off at the wrong stop on the plane. Inside, several characters are still holding court. I take a seat by Terence Mountain who played Raphael – one of the first people to attack James Bond in the film. But before I can ask what he’s drinking, a hand the size of a dinner plate rests itself on my shoulder. It’s George Lazenby. Forty-six years on from the film, he must now be 75. And he looks it. Every gorgeous person has features that irk symmetry but now ears like handles curve out of this mountain of a man. He’s bullish too, if in a wounded giant sort of way. “The lack of privacy did get to me. I mean, it was fun the first time, but then I didn’t like it one bit; this is different though,” he says, when I joke

that he famously disliked intrusion. The film has gained notoriety among fans for having almost no gadgets, containing the first ‘new’ 007 (after the original, Sean Connery) and its youngest one (aged 29). It also features the only Bond born outside of the UK and is the sole film in which the spy marries. But Lazenby’s own rise to the role was even more unlikely than the film’s particularities. The Australian was a car mechanic in the Antipodes before he pursued a girl to London and earned his keep from a modelling career that peaked when he became Europe’s ‘Marlboro man’ in the late sixties. “I knew an agent who was a friend of the two directors,” Lazenby recalls. “So I was aware they had gone through 300 guys instead of the usual

“Lazenby’s own rise to the role was even more unlikely than the film’s particularities” ten.” He had nothing to lose. “I pinched a suit [Sean] Connery had failed to pick up from Savile Row, had my hair cut at his barbers, put on a Rolex and acted bolshy at auditions.” Invited back, Lazenby proceeded to (accidentally) knock out a Russian wrestler and “at this point, one of the directors grabbed me by the arm and said ‘we’re going with you’.” A promise kept, even when they found out that he’d invented his CV. And also in spite of a difficult filming process. One of the directors, Hunt, reportedly refused to talk to Lazenby, believing the silence kept the actor moody and intense; the female lead, Diana Rigg, allegedly felt alienated by the Australian’s amateur ways and rumoured womanising. The events led to an even more awkward denouement when Lazenby declined a new contract. In his cowboy drawl he recalls a “rogue who convinced me that because Clint Eastwood was earning $500,000 for Spaghetti Westerns” – and that short hair, suits and war were on the way out – the $1m contract was better rejected. Not that there are any sour grapes. Speaking of the latest licensed killer, Lazenby observes: “Initially I didn’t think Daniel Craig looked the part but he’s convinced me.” Though he can’t help adding: “He seems a little cold-blooded – I like to think I gave Bond some heart.”

MÜRREN, SWITZERLAND The cable car that connects the Schilthorn summit of the Swiss Alps (schilthorn.ch) may have been built as part of Blofeld’s mountain hideaway in Dr No, but the recently completed 007 Walk of Fame, which stretches across the narrow mountain crest, offers views of the setting for one of James Bond’s most adventurous ski chases. Blofeld’s lair, at the opposing side of the walkway to a spectacular viewing platform, is now home to the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant where visitors can enjoy a huge Bond breakfast buffet including waffles and maple syrup. Guests keen to enjoy the interactive displays at the Bond World exhibition, frequently book the Bond suite at Hotel Eiger. Staying on theme, many combine a visit to Bern within their trip to Mürren and the Schilthorn, spending the night at Hotel Schweizerhof (en.schweizerhofbern.ch), which itself was used in the film as the scene of Blofeld’s lawyer’s offices. With a 150year history and location near the charming old town, it’s exceptionally glamorous. VENICE, ITALY The glamorous credentials of Belmond Hotel Cipriani, Venice’s 60-year-old landmark, were confirmed in Casino Royale in 2006. Travel connoisseurs no doubt give a nod of recognition when James Bond moors his yacht at the hotel’s private pier, while Cipriani’s renowned restaurant Cip’s and its terrace over the water were also used to shoot scenes for the movie. Just like Bond, guests arrive at the hotel (albeit a little more slowly) by boat and disembark on the jetty. Its location on the island of Giudecca, across the lagoon from St. Mark’s Square, sets it aside from the other luxury hotels found in Venice. Guidecca is often referred to as ‘downtown’ by locals and its position enables the hotel to have enough space for

gardens, a swimming pool and large rooms. Palazzo Vendramin – where actor Daniel Craig stayed during filming – is a highlight. The sprawling, 15th century private villa, connected to the hotel, has its own suites and stunning views. Venice’s canals also feature in the film. James Bond’s love interest with Vesper (Eva Green) literally goes down the drain when the historic Palazzo Pisani appears to collapse into the water, thanks to special effects. In reality, the 15th century palace (pisanimoretta.com) on the Canal Grande stands safely intact. Shaken but not stirred. Double garden view rooms start from £490 per night, including breakfast, belmond.com/ hotelcipriani

OCHO RIOS, JAMAICA Author Ian Fleming’s beloved Jamaica is arguably the most important destination when it comes to the subject of James Bond. In 1946 he built the GoldenEye estate in Oracabessa Bay and in later years described how he “wrote... with the jalousies [windows] closed around me so that I would not be distracted by the birds and the flowers and the sunshine outside...” (ianfleming.com). It was at nearby Laughing Waters beach near Ocho Rios that Ursula Andress – as Honey Rider – famously emerged out of the sea holding a conch shell in the 1962 James Bond film Dr No. The writer’s original house has since been turned into the Fleming Villa retreat at the heart of the GoldenEye Hotel & Resort. Stretching over 52 lush acres, with a verdant forest and lagoons, the estate offers outdoor showers, simple and elegant

décor consisting of white rooms and teak furniture. The resort’s Footsteps of Fleming package includes guided snorkeling on a beloved reef, and dinner at Fleming’s favourite spot – the Sunken Garden – overlooking the ocean. PHANG NGA BAY, THAILAND

UDAIPUR, INDIA The Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur was bought to life on screen as the home of Octopussy – Bond’s nemesis – in the 1983 film of the same name. The all-white marble palace, with its ornate turrets and scalloped arches, is built on a four-acre island called Jag Niwas – one of four on Lake Pichola – and looks as if it is hovering on the water. When 007, played by Roger Moore, arrived disguised as a crocodile, the location took the spotlight. The Taj Lake Palace was originally built in 1743 as a royal summer palace for Maharana Jagat Singh II and acquired by Taj Hotels in 1971. Individually designed suites include the Chandra Prakash Suite, which has decorative gilt mouldings, sculpted marble columns and beautiful fretwork screens, and guests can dine on floating, candlelit pontoons. The winding cobbled streets and white buildings, as well as the impressive City Palace of Udaipur, also feature in Octopussy. Luxury Palace rooms start from £180 including breakfast, tajhotels.com

The otherworldly seascape that is Phang Nga Bay in Thailand has become so synonymous with its part in The Man With The Golden Gun that it has resulted in one of its islands, Ko Tapu, being renamed James Bond Island. The spectacular emerald-green waters with nearly 100 dramatic limestone rocky outposts are found off the coast of Phuket. Ko Tapu was made famous in the 1974 film as the hideaway of the movie’s villain Scaramanga. Bond, played by Roger Moore, flew over Phang Nga Bay – giving viewers a breathtaking view of the area – and duelled on the beach. Because of its precarious nature – it is very wide at the top and thin at the bottom – the island now has National Park protection. However, the Kayaking by Starlight Tour (johngray-seacanoe.com) takes travellers to the more undiscovered islands, known as ‘hongs’. Many of these have hidden beaches full of wildlife and secret lagoons in their centres and visitors can enter the sea caves by kayak. The tour lasts until sun-down, at which time you enter by candlelight when the sky is lit by fireflies in an experience straight out of the movies. Nearby is Naka Yai island, known as the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’ and home to Naka Island, A Luxury Collection Resort. The villa-based retreat offers idyllic ocean views and a standout spa. You can indulge with signature indigenous botanical treatments or channel the adventurous spirit of Bond by opting for bamboo rafting and elephant trekking excursions. BUSINESS DIGEST

new business: TRIBE LONDON

DODDLE RUNNER SERVICE

Former Ogilvy & Mather advertising professional Emma Forsyth has launched Tribe London, a new dating service for groups of friends to meet each other.

With some office mailrooms refusing to receive personal mail, Doddle is a delivery point for your packages, open seven days a week. In the run-up to Christmas, Doddle is launching its Runner Service: a runner will pick up as many as five parcels and wrap, post and track them for you. Like Uber revolutionised how we travel, Doddle is set to change how we send and receive post. Doddle, Churchill Place, doddle.com

How did you come up with the concept? Successfully dating in London can be a full-time job. There are so many potential partners to choose from and literally thousands of date-spots to go to. I wanted to make it that little bit easier by curating amazing dating experiences.

THE STRESS OF LIFE A study commissioned by PMI Health Group has shown that 43 per cent of London employers offer stress management benefits, up from 22 per cent in 2013. And employees approve: 17 per cent of workers placed counselling and employee assistance programmes as among one of their three most valued benefits, compared to six per cent in 2013. pmihealthgroup.co.uk

“The common question that gets asked in business is ‘why?’ That’s a good question, but an equally valid question is, ‘why not?’ – Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon

Who is Tribe London designed for? Tribe London is for the discerning Londoner looking to experience new things and meet interesting people. It is for an individual with an eye for quality and an attraction to unique experiences. Tribe is for anyone who wants the best of London, with the best of company. What is next for Tribe London? The aim is to roll Tribe London out across numerous cities worldwide. It would mean that our busiest members, our business travellers, would always be able to get the most out of the cities they visit, and make the most of their downtime while away. Tribe London launched last month and kicked off with a James Bond themed dinner for five women and five men, tribelondon.co.uk.

The Rise of Corporate Crime Investigations:

The Fallout for Employees Bindmans LLP advises on the role of employees in corporate criminal investigations

LEGAL issues

G

igantic fines have been imposed here and abroad on companies that have admitted regulatory breaches and criminal offences, and the UK now has US-style Deferred Prosecution Agreements for companies that confess early and hand over evidence to prosecutors. Whichever way we turn, the law is moving to clamp down on corporate wrongdoing. However, as every corporate crime is committed by individual employees, the rise in corporate prosecutions can only mean one thing – more prosecutions of individuals. Companies can significantly reduce fines and damage to a business by reaching an early settlement agreement with regulators and prosecutors. In order to have the opportunity to do so, they must investigate promptly the full extent of suspected wrongdoing and hand over reports and evidence. This can sometimes mean that employees suspected of committing criminal offences at work are investigated and questioned by their employers without the benefit of safeguards that protect them and their right against self incrimination. Alternatively, as a result of disclosures

made by a company or whistleblower, the regulators or prosecutors may commence their own investigation during which they may interview witnesses and suspects and may involve the police to make arrests or search homes and work places. An employee will have much to consider if they find they are to be questioned during a corporate crime investigation. Are they a witness? Or could they be a suspect? Will they keep their job and regulatory approvals? Will they unwittingly incriminate themselves or trigger regulatory action? How will they balance a request for immediate cooperation with the need to have an eye on a possible prosecution in the future? What is said during any investigation can be pivotal. It is vital to have the fullest possible disclosure of the matters

that will be put in interview, and to know what possible regulatory breaches or criminal offences may be under consideration. It is also essential to have sufficient opportunity to prepare to give a full and relevant account. Going into an interview insufficiently prepared, without access to records or unaware of the consequences of making certain admissions can come back to bite. Investigations are stressful and difficult and the stakes can be very high, but with shrewd foresight and preparation the best can be made of a difficult situation and common pitfalls avoided. Are you the subject of a regulatory criminal or fraud investigation? If so we can help. Please contact our team at crimeandfraud@bindmans.com or call 0207 014 2120

Head Office Is Watching Have corporations taken health and wellness incentives too far, overstepping into personal time and monitoring how their employees eat, sleep and socialise when out of office? WORDS: CHARLOTTE PHILLIPS

CANARY WHARF | 95

F

rom subsidised gym memberships and health insurance, to free fruit and yoga classes, in the office culture of 2015, corporate wellness is on the agenda. But with news that US-based businesses are offering fitness trackers to their staff, industry experts are predicting that this new-found focus could cost us our privacy. While lifestyle incentives may lead to less employee sick days, lower stress levels and greater staff retention, the management of wellbeing schemes is increasingly taking a digital form. “Smartphones and new fitness technology make delivery and on-going engagement easier than ever before,” says Jeff Archer, a director at corporate fitness consultancy The Tonic. And while tracking changes in energy and activity levels is useful, there’s a downside: your boss can effectively keep track of the intimate details of your diet and daily behaviour. For some, that goes too far. Makers of self-named wearable fitness tracker, Fitbit, work with over 50 Fortune 500 companies. In 2013, 24,500 staff and spouses at oil conglomerate BP received Fitbit bracelets, which monitor sleep, calorie intake and step count. Other key customers, says Aideen O’Colmain, its director of B2B and corporate wellness EMEA, include “Bank of America, Alaska Airlines, GNC… and in the UK, NFU Mutual,” contributing to Fitbit’s estimated business value of $4bn.

Guy Hayward, CEO of financial recruitment agency Goodman Masson, believes corporate wellness programmes demonstrate that companies have a “deep commitment to modernising the workplace” in order to attract the strongest candidates. Indeed, O’Colmain says Fitbit’s

“While tracking changes is useful... your boss can effectively keep track of the intimate details of... daily behaviour” largest Fortune 500 clients have step counts which are 60-80 per cent above average. However, in enabling employees to support each other and compare statistics, comes the risk of increasing workplace pressure and competition. For its part, O’Colmain for Fitbit maintains that “Fitbit Wellness is very much an opt-in programme and not compulsory. Employees are invited to enrol.” Legally, of course, consent is required for a company to store information about its workforce. “You have [to have] given consent for them to so do,” says Peter Daly, solicitor at the Employment and Professional Discipline department of Canary Wharf-based law firm Bindmans LLP. This also applies to out-of-hours data on information regarding drug-taking and number of hours sleep.

business

However, “the consent process does not entirely reflect the reality of the unequal bargaining position between employer and employee,” says Daly. “For example, if an employee is informed during a recruitment process that he or she must

“The consent process does not entirely reflect the reality of an unequal bargaining position” consent to monitoring in order to be offered a position, that offer may be withdrawn if the consent is not given.” In those circumstances, “an employee may consent to the monitoring even if they’re not content to do so,” he adds. Clearly, the use of wellbeing management systems brings with it an implicit pressure to conform to company norms. But, while it’s difficult to imagine that a company wouldn’t use data on employee behaviour to make HR decisions, potentially threatening job security and self-esteem, Caroline Foote, managing director at recruitment consultancy Career Moves Group, says that personality fit remains a secondary concern, after “skills, adaptability and personality”.

In a company where submitting data feels obligatory, employers can choose to reduce pressure by viewing results in aggregate only, whereby individual scores are not visible. Victoria Loome, senior trend analyst at Trend Watching, also believes most employees recognise how overwhelmingly positive the corporate wellness initiatives are. “Privacy concerns can be overcome by emphasising the real benefits that incentive schemes can offer,” Loome says. “After all, most consumers are willing to share personal data if they get rewarded.” The Tonic, the-tonic.com, Goodman Masson, goodmanmasson.com, Career Moves Group, careermovesgroup.co.uk, Fitbit, fitbit.com, TrendWatching, trendwatching.com, Bindmans LLP, bindmans.com Disclaimer: Information contained within this piece including commentary from Bindmans LLP does not constitute legal advice, and should not be relied on by any individual in considering or pursuing any course of action without receiving further bespoke advice.

They provided the free advice as part of the One Stop Advice Surgery hosted by Hackney Council for Voluntary Service (HCVS) on the 16th September. HCVS supports hundreds of people in running successful voluntary and community sector organisations by giving them access to the key skills, knowledge and resources necessary to respond to the needs of local people. Eleven charities came to the advice surgery with a range of needs and requests. The two ELBP volunteers were well placed to give excellent advice and feedback, utilising the many skills they have developed in advising hundreds of businesses.

They explored their area, talking to groups like the Friends of the Island History Trust, taking photographs that represented their identity in their local environment. They also looked at the work of female photographers, examining how they expressed their identity. Fancy gadgets; lots of (ultimately dispensable) glamorous girls; theme tune sung by the pop star of the moment? Check, check and check. That, frankly, is the easy bit. What’s tougher is choosing the right car for a homegrown superhero.

Eon Productions, makers of 24 Bond movies, and 007 creator Ian Fleming have allowed commander James Bond to drive all manner of cars, bikes and buggies, and even the occasional double decker. Mind you, that soon became a single decker when Roger Moore deliberately drove it into a low bridge in Live and Let Die. Some of the cars used, have had more impact than others, but Bond enthusiasts are largely in agreement over the agent’s most memorable motors.

wheels Cars – fast ones, slow ones and gadget laden ones – are an integral part of 007’s armoury and one that generates huge interest and revenue for the chosen brands. Matthew Carter picks the best

5: Citroen 2CV For Your Eyes Only (1981) Probably the slowest vehicle Bond has ever driven, the Citroen 2CV was owned by Melina Havelock, Bond’s love interest in the film. With his Lotus Esprit Turbo out of action (it had been blown up) Bond and Havelock were forced to use the car to escape the clutches of villains driving a pair of Peugeot 504s. Set in Greece, the chase navigated a mountainside via hairpin bend after hairpin bend, and took in the sights of the occasional olive grove. Although the bright yellow 2CV took a hell of a bashing during the chase, it naturally won despite its lack of poke – at one point a laconic Bond said: “I’m afraid we’re being out-horse powered”. In fact, the cars used for filming – there were four of them – all had larger and more powerful engines than the ones they left the factory with. One even had a revolving plate welded to its reinforced roof so it could be rolled… and turned back on its wheels by some helpful bystanders.

4: Lotus Esprit S1 The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) A real inspiration, this. The story goes that Don McLaughlin, the then PR consultant for Lotus, heard that Eon Productions was looking for a suitable Bond vehicle so he parked a prototype Esprit outside their offices. The ploy worked. For the film, the Lotus was delivered to Bond in Sardinia, after having been suitably modified by Q: this one not only boasted anti-aircraft missiles, it could also turn into a submarine. For the underwater filming, seven different cars were used, each one representing one step in the transformation. One actually worked underwater, while the car seen entering the sea was thrust there courtesy of a compressed air cannon. Once it had used its missiles to down a helicopter, Bond drove out of the sea and away, pausing on the beach only to throw away a fish that had managed to infiltrate the interior.

3: Aston Martin DB10 Spectre (2015) The importance of Bond to Aston Martin is evident by the lengths the company has gone to be involved in the new epic: it has designed and built a completely new model for the super-spy. Called DB10, the car was designed by chief creative officer Marek Reichman and marks 50 years since Aston Martin and Bond joined forces.

Just ten of the DB10 have been built, with all being used either in Spectre or as promotional tools. Although a bespoke design, the car’s running gear is essentially the same as the existing V8 Vantage, but it’s longer and wider than Aston’s ‘entry-level’ model. Significantly, the company says: “The DB10 gives a glimpse to the future design direction for the next generation of Aston Martins.” And that next generation will start with the DB11, due early next year. The DB10 name will not be re-used, though Aston Martin is currently issuing a limited DB9 GT Bond Edition in tribute, complete with 007 badges on its boot.

2: Bentley 4.5 litre Casino Royale (1953) According to Charlie Higson’s Young Bond series of kids’ books, James Bond’s first car – the one he used while at Eton College – was an early 1.5-litre Aston, but creator Ian Fleming put his Secret Service agent in a Le Mans-style pre-war Bentley 4.5-litre when he started writing the thrillers. Fleming wrote that Bond had bought the car ‘almost new’ in 1933 (they ceased production in 1930) but had stored it safely away during the war. Equipped with a Villiers supercharger, the grey convertible features in the novels Casino Royale, Live and Let Die and Moonraker. The Bentley had no gadgets on board, although Bond did keep a high-powered Colt pistol in the glove box. Alas, the car was destroyed in a chase in Moonraker after which he bought a 1953 Mark VI Bentley saloon, using winnings from a card game.

1: Aston Martin DB5 Goldfinger (1964) It had to be number one. The iconic DB5 marked the start of Aston Martin’s association with James Bond but also, more significantly, the arrival of gadgets. Bond’s DB5 benefitted from a number of extras devised by Q, notably Ben Hur-style spikes in the wheels, revolving number plates, an oil sprayer at the rear, bumper-mounted machine guns, a bulletproof panel that popped up to protect the rear screen and, of course, an ejector seat that allowed Bond to dispose of rivals. Two cars were made available for film use, one with gadgets. Incredibly, the car – chassis number DP/216/1 for all you anoraks – was later stripped of its weaponry by Aston Martin and resold. It was subsequently retrofitted with details by its owner but was stolen in 1977 in Florida. It’s still missing.

T

he growth of Canary Wharf to become one of Europe’s largest financial services employment clusters in the last 25 years has overshadowed its emergence as a leading prime London residential market. The next wave of development is likely to rebalance this view, supported by new infrastructure and amenities, which will reinforce the area’s position as a prime residential address. Knight Frank’s current forecasts show a steady and sustainable rate of growth across the London market. Residential prices are expected to climb by a cumulative 26 per cent between 2015 and 2019. Younger residents under 40 are making up a much larger proportion of buyers and renters in developments near Canary Wharf, than in other prime London neighbourhoods, according to Knight Frank data. The creation of new homes pivoting around a new school, Crossrail and new office space for creative and technology firms will enhance its appeal to a wider demographic, and cement its position as a key prime London location. This position is emphasised by the shifting of London’s economic and cultural ‘centres of gravity’ further eastwards as well as the eastwards RESIDENTIAL RESEARCH expansion of the boundaries of prime London, reflecting EASTERN PRIME the increased CANARY WHARF AND ITS ENVIRONS 2015 popularity of East London living.

STEP INTO THE WARMTH Described by the brand as a “firecracker of energy and warmth to liven up those dreary months with sparkle and sensuousness” Timothy Oulton’s A/W 15 collection is packed full of beautiful pieces that will both make a design statement, and be used every day in a familiar and functional way. We love the rugged yet warm style of the Aviator Dogfight chair, finished in new Leather Spitfire, which is inspired by military aircraft, with aerodynamic curves handcrafted in hand-distressed Warrior leather. “The new collections have a very distinctive energy that sort of radiates from within” says Timothy. “The shapes and materials we’ve used are bold and dynamic, but they’re also cosy and inviting at the same time.” timothyoulton.com

RAW ELEMENT Structured, clean-cut geometric patterns sit gloriously alongside free-formed, textured shapes, topped with crowns of velvet and rich prints in colour inspiration taken from the spice trail – this is the latest lighting collection from Porta Romana. Where elements meet the elements, the designers have created pieces of nature to take away with you – a piece of honeycomb, burnt wood, precious stones, a spider’s web, crystals and even water are incorporated in the creation of a stunning light feature designed as a centrepiece in the modern home. portaromana.co.uk

NEWS

LETTINGS head of lettings at Knight Frank Canary Wharf, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market

CHRISTOPHER PAXTON,

DID YOU KNOW? Ex-council tenants of a London flat have sold their home for a staggering £1.2million. They bought the threebedroom property in Covent Garden for £130,000 in 1990, under the right-to-buy scheme but, after six weeks on the market, it has sold for just £150,000 under its £1.35million asking price, making the vendors an 800 per cent profit (The Telegraph)

ONE STOP SHOP In an effort to make the experience of buying a home as simple as possible, well-known property company, RFR, is launching the Property Private Office, which will take care of a range of residential affairs from the initial search to interior design, asset management and investment. Founded by husband and wife team Richard and Sophie Rogerson, RFR is currently the hottest property search agency in London (according to Tatler). The new Property Private Office will officially cover: Property Search, Interior Design, Investment, Property Advisory and Property.

A

s autumn approaches, tenants can finally see light at the end of the tunnel. Over the last few years the market has been very much a landlord’s market with stock levels being low and demand high. Over the last three months, I have seen this beginning to change. Stock levels have increased in the area, however, applicant levels have stayed the same and at some rental rates have decreased. Core market properties are still moving well – one bedroom units between £350 and £400 per week are being agreed the fastest, whilst two bedroom offerings between £400 and £475 per week, are being snapped up within just seven days of hitting the market. The prime market is still very much as it was earlier this year and activity is very quiet compared to this time last year. We have seen a number of landlords increase their asking prices between five per cent and ten per cent above what was achieved 12 months ago, and these units lay empty, gathering dust on the market. It is a harsh lesson, but landlords must remember that applicants will only pay the amount of rent that the properties are actually worth. When meeting a landlord for the first time, my main advice is still the two Ps, price and presentation. If your property isn’t priced correctly and presented well, then you will struggle to fight off the competition and appeal of those similar properties in the area. Landlords need to make sure their properties are eye-catching and appealing on the internet and just that little bit different to stand out from the crowd. Although the rental market is looking a little tougher than usual, we still think 2015 will be promising. It is still so very important that landlords instruct the right agency who can give the right advice to secure a corporate tenant at the correct rental price quickly. We have all seen great apartments sitting idle on property portals with no activity as the price was too high. Landlords must be realistic with their pricing and must look at the facts. Rents over the last three months have increased in E14 by 0.2 per cent, not 20 per cent. Knight Frank remains the agent of choice for corporate tenants and investor landlords in the Docklands area.

STATE OF THE MARKET Crossrail Commuters JASON TAYLOR, sales director at Franklyn James Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

D

The Magic Numbers ALASDAIR CARPENTER, managing director of Lourdes Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

W

espite the fact that we are still a number of years away from the opening of the first working Crossrail station, the government recently released its plans for Crossrail 2. This subsequent venture could create more than 200,000 jobs, as well as new homes across London and the south east. The new project will also make the UK one of the leading countries in the world for transport links into a major capital city. Making London more easily accessible to other parts of the UK will naturally mean an increase in the number of commuters travelling in and out on a daily basis, so what does this mean for the property industry? One thing is for certain – the buzz around the current Crossrail project has caused a dramatic increase in property values in the postcode areas where future stations will be located. Investors will increasingly start looking at where the new Crossrail route is due to be built. They will have to wait for quite some time before the commuters arrive though, as this project is not due to be completed until the year 2030. With plans for up to 30 trains per hour to cross central London, you may have to start thinking now about a new excuse for being late for work.

ith the recent tightening of tax breaks for buyto-let landlords, property investment may be about to become a slightly less attractive proposition. Finding the right property, both in the right location and at the right price, will now be more important than ever. As house prices have soared in recent years, buyto-let yields have become slightly suppressed. Many new investors in the London market have struggled to break the magic five per cent gross yield, with net yields hovering around four per cent. Although this is well below the yields that many landlords across the capital have obtained in the past, given the wider economic picture for many savers and investors, this still seems reasonable for an asset-backed investment. Many savvy and seasoned landlords are now shying away from previous London safe havens in search of burgeoning areas with potential for future growth. Crossrail seems less of a transport line and more of a treasure map for property investors and developers. For any first time buy-to-let investors, research is key. In the technological age we live in, there is a wealth of information available to investors, so make sure you use it to your advantage. Locating an agent with good investment knowledge and experience can also be invaluable. Not all estate agents are strong in this field but at Lourdes we pride ourselves on the quality of our advice. Should you wish to discuss either your buy-to-let aspirations or your portfolio, I would be delighted to hear from you.

COMPANY PROFILE: JOHNS & CO

Raising the bar JOHNS&CO may be the new kid on the block, but with the number of properties under its management set to double each year, it seems John Morley, managing director and founder, has perfected a winning formula

W

hen John Morley established JOHNS&CO in 2013, his vision was very clear; he would establish a lettings and management company that would go above and beyond, not just for the landlords that pay the bills, but for tenants too. “Tenants are more likely to stay in a home with such a fantastic range of additional benefits, thus keeping investments occupied, affording landlords peace of mind,” he explains.

Morley says, often the first time you’ll have any form of interaction with the property manager is when something breaks or goes wrong. This isn’t the case at JOHNS&CO: “Our property managers meet with every tenant moving into every apartment to build a rapport immediately.” He adds, “Our property managers aren’t remote, they’re on the ground – that way we can address any issues or problems immediately. There’s a property manager literally an elevator away.” And a highly qualified one too.

PROPERTY

“Tenants are more likely to stay in a home with such a fantastic range of additional benefits, thus keeping investments occupied, affording landlords peace of mind” At JOHNS&CO, the team is comprised of expert consultants that are experienced in multiple markets – everything from sales and rentals to property management. Morley says it’s about ensuring both the landlords and tenants experience the very highest quality of service possible. Judging by JOHNS&CO’s success thus far, it seems clients are responding well to the services offered. Morley and his team take the approach of talking to tenants, six or seven months before completion: “We give potential tenants the time to sort out their current accommodation and get ready for a move in the future.” Morley adds: “Embassy Gardens is completing and we’re having phenomenal success with our team that’s letting those homes.” In fact, in just two short months, the team based there has achieved occupancy of between 40 and 50 apartments. This level of success is set to continue. Morley says the number of properties under management is set to double next year – a fantastic forecast for a company that’s still very much in its infancy. While JOHNS&CO is still a new kid on the block, Morley brings years of experience to the business. Before founding JOHNS&CO, Morley

worked at The Ballymore Group as head of international sales, where he gained an innate understanding of the expectations of customers throughout the world. This has filtered through all aspects of his business where there’s clearly a strong emphasis on bespoke, high-quality service with unwavering standards. Even when he speaks about future expansion, these standards clearly remain at the forefront of his mind: “If we open a new office, there will be a new team. There will be a property manager, a lettings manager, a lettings team and a sales team; it wouldn’t ever be reliant on stretched resources.” If the last couple of years is anything to go by, we’d say JOHNS&CO will be looking to employ many more resources in the coming years.

DEVELOPMENT SHOWCASE

PRIME PENTHOUSES

S

eptember saw the launch of a special collection of penthouses in London. The two residences in question, The Lateral Penthouse and The Triplex Penthouse, were launched by Telford Homes at its Parliament House development, and are located just off the Albert Embankment between Vauxhall and Waterloo stations, which both offer reliable transport links. The London Heliport and London City Airport are also in close range. Bespoke Cheville Parquet flooring greets residents as soon as they enter either property, with a similarly high standard of design and attention to detail carried throughout. Interiors specialist Honky, which both designed and furnished both of the apartments, has included a high-tech custom audio visual Crestron system for controlling blinds, lighting, audio and visual; as well as designer kitchens with Gaggenau and Miele integrated appliances; and decadent bathroom suites. The Triplex Penthouse, spread over three floors, is topped off by a generous private terrace, one of two in the property, which is prepped for entertainment with an outdoor barbecue area and a luxury Riviera cedar wood hot tub. Its second outdoor space is accessed via an automated glass

roof light, found at the top of a helical wooden staircase by TinTab, whose creative engineers design and install bespoke pieces such as this using specialist techniques. Floor to ceiling glazing offers a wealth of natural light and allows residents to take advantage of the spectacular views of the skyline even from inside the property, where panoramic views over the Thames stretch both towards the Houses of Parliament and Battersea. Fob access to both of the penthouses is required for additional security while residents are free to access the rest of the building’s topclass amenities, such as a concierge service and gymnasium. Additional factors such as these which the development offers only enhance the penthouses’ desirability, and David Campbell, group sales and marketing director at Telford Homes, added that “Parliament House has been one of our most successful developments to date, and we are expecting high levels of interest from a global audience.” With the level of luxury living offered in the penthouses, the attention is certainly warranted.

INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO

Out with the old and in with the new As an increasing number of luxury new builds pop up across the capital (still not at the rate required though), it seems London’s investors are beginning to consider siding with the rising shiny and new over London’s period performers. From a new detached family home, to luxury apartments in SE1 and Royal Greenwich, this month we bring you three no-expense-spared investment opportunities to expand your portfolio.

THE RIVER GARDENS

L

ondon & Regional Properties (L&R) launched the Wyndham Apartments at the end of September, and there has already been significant interest and sales in the development. Potential buyers are therefore advised to contact the marketing suite as soon as possible. To view the new show apartment, call 020 3747 6111 or email sales@therivergardens.com. The Wyndham Apartments is the third and latest phase of The River Gardens development which stretches some 1000 ft along the banks of the Thames and offers contemporary and luxury waterside living, set within a beautifully manicured landscaped 12 acre site. Providing excellent private leisure facilities for residents, The River Gardens offers a private gym, tennis / games court and swimming pool, a dedicated concierge, on-site business centre and crèche, cafes, bars and restaurants. The development also provides extensive secure underground car parking for residents. The one-, two- and three-bedroom luxury apartments boast cutting-edge design by Squire & Partners, and have been finished to the highest specification with Italian custom-designed

kitchens, large ensuite bathrooms with under-floor heating, a video entrysystem and pre-wired satellite TV connections. This meticulously planned development has created apartments of exceptional scale, maximising the sensational river views with floor to ceiling windows and generous balconies, providing a tranquil yet inspiring environment within one of the capital’s most desirable addresses. Leonard Sebastian, Group Managing Director of London & Regional has said: “The waterside apartments, set within beautifully serene gardens, will possess the largest living spaces of any recent residential project in Greenwich”. Estate agents Jones Lang LaSalle, believe the Wyndham Apartments will make an excellent investment, and provide great homes for those looking for a village environment, and proximity to London’s attractions, amenities and commercial centre.

Prices from £392,500 (for a one-bedroom apartment) £525,000 (for a two-bedroom apartment) £758,000 (for a three-bedroom apartment) therivergardens.com
