“Designers want me to dress like spring, in billowing things. I don’t feel like spring. I feel like a warm red autumn” – Marilyn Monroe

A

fter a summer of unpredictable weather, of sporting highs and political lows, there’s something rather comforting about settling into the regular rhythms of autumn. Days that are bookended by crisp, bright mornings and ever-darkening evenings have a pleasant predictability to them, and I’m grateful that I now no longer have to face weekly disappointment when planning a summer weekend around a dismal weather forecast. Undoubtedly one of my favourite things about autumn is the fashion; from the return of the mac for men at the likes of Hackett and Reiss (p. 52) to water-resistant coats from Paul Smith and a sumptuous new A/W16 collection from Massimo Dutti (p. 40), we’ve got all your seasonal style needs sorted. One lady who is unlikely to go out of fashion is the inimitable Karlie Kloss, who sits down with us on page 32 to talk business, baking and her new #bebrilliant campaign with Swarovksi. From model behaviour to artistic endeavour, on page 20 one of the art world’s most celebrated female sculptors, Helaine Blumenfeld OBE, reveals the inspiration behind her most famous works, and tells us why she chose Canary Wharf’s Jubilee Park as the setting for her largest public sculpture yet. On the topic of grand designs, Honda has decided the time has come to re-enter the world of super cars with the launch of its new NSX; on page 78 Matthew Carter takes the model for a spin in Portugal and finds that it may just be the future of the super car. Also breaking new ground this month is Apple, with the unveiling of its new iPhone 7 – turn to page 63 to find out what’s new and why it’s worth upgrading. On page 58 we examine the potent power of fragrance and fashion, and what happens when the two collide, while on page 86 we’re inviting you to indulge your inner adrenaline junkie with kite skiing in St. Moritz. Prepare to fly high.

STEAK

‘I’ve read Steak half a dozen times; indeed, we at Hawksmoor bought several hundred copies for our staff, and it’s still my go-to bible for all things bovine. Mark Schatzker knows more about steak than almost any other man on Earth’ Richard H. Turner, Executive Chef, Hawksmoor Restaurant; Director, Meatopia

MARK SCHATZKER

Mark Schatzker is an award-winning journalist who has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Condé Nast Traveler. He is a radio columnist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as well as the author of The Dorito Effect: The Surprising New Truth About Food and Flavor. He lives in Toronto with his wife and three children.

‘The Bill Bryson of Beef’ Bloomberg

Passionate about steak, award-winning food and travel writer Mark Schatzker sets off on a quest for perfection in the art of cooking beef. His odyssey takes him thousands of miles through eight countries, and sees him tuck into more than 100 lbs of steak. He gasps for air on Texas feedlots; dodges the descendants of prehistoric aurochs in France; encounters grass-fed glory in Scotland and fervent localism in Italy; debunks the myth of beer-massaged cows in Kobe; and admires Argentinian grilling savvy. Schatzker also discovers that, whilst there’s a lot of steak around, there’s not a lot of great steak. To determine why this might be, he meets with ranchers, chefs, experts on flavour and animal welfare and even chemists and historians. Some key issues that emerge include breed integrity, marbling, grass versus grain feed, slaughterhouse conditions and industrial practices designed to maximize output at the expense of quality. Finally, he has a go at raising a cow himself … In humorous, lively and highly informative prose, Schatzker pursues his obsession with admirable thoroughness. This illuminating study of steak and its discontents as well as its many delights will resonate with avid and casual meat-eaters alike, and will even make vegetarians go ‘hmm’. £9.99

H

aving so far managed to fly relatively low under the radar when it comes to her personal profile, contemporary sculptor Helaine Blumenfeld OBE will be “taking some risks” this year. One of the most accomplished and respected figures working in sculpture today, her work has been shown in more than 70 exhibitions and she has completed more than 80 commissions worldwide over the past four decades. “I’m not a public artist,” says Blumenfeld, who has just got back from Italy, where she’s been putting the final touches to her latest public sculpture ahead of its reveal. “Despite my family name [she is married to the writer Yorick and is the daughter-in-law of legendary fashion photographer Erwin], I live my life quite privately. But now that I’m in my 70s I’m taking more risks. I’ve broken my own rules; I’m thinking about my legacy.” Appointed vice president of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2004, she became the first female sculptor to win the International Sculpture Prize in Tuscany’s Pietrasanta (the Mecca of sculptors) in 2007, which was followed by a nod from the Queen in 2011 (“a huge vote of confidence”). And this month, at the age of 74, she has chosen Canary Wharf to stage her largest public sculpture to date, as well as holding a major solo exhibition in Mayfair, and waving goodbye to the film crew who have been tailing her for the past few months for a BBC documentary about her journey.

With her large-scale, abstract, cast-bronze piece Fortuna standing at more than five metres high in Jubilee Park, Blumenfeld feels elated. “For me, public sculpture is so important as it affects a large number of people. As an area in which to exhibit one of my sculptures, Canary Wharf was very high on my list,” she says. “The new residential building in Jubilee Park will have a large public presence right on the wharf. There was a time when sculptures were commemorative or religious, but today they define an area and create a place of meaning within a community. Canary Wharf is one of the most vibrant, energetic and lively hubs in the world.” We speak for a while about the piece and its message, but ultimately Blumenfeld hopes Fortuna will convey an expression of hope and aspiration, of “rising upward”. “I wanted to mediate with the vastness of the architecture,” she says. “I was inspired by the idea of fortune. Although the surface may seem polished, there is a lot of energy underneath. Growth is not always an easy path. My work represents an expression of the human condition: hope, fragility, turbulence, strength and beauty.” Fans can also explore Blumenfeld’s latest exhibition this month at the newly opened sculpture space Hignell Gallery. Gallery owner Abby Hignell has worked with Blumenfeld on and off for the past ten years, most recently

curating Helaine Blumenfeld / Henry Moore: A Dialogue 1985-2015, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of the two sculptors’ famous, seminal joint exhibition at the Alex Rosenberg Gallery in New York. Now curating her latest body of work, Hard Beauty, she believes the themes are multilayered. “Blumenfeld is a passionate believer in the importance of the positive power of beauty and the difference it can make to peoples’ lives,” says Hignell. “But risk is an essential part of her creative process. Through embracing risk, Blumenfeld shows vulnerability, which becomes a counterpoint and an edge to the intrinsic beauty in her sculptural forms. Helaine Blumenfeld is the grande dame of contemporary marble carving… she is a true pioneer.” When I mention the accolades, Blumenfeld acknowledges her gratitude, but maintains that her public sculptures will always represent the highest points of her career. But no prize or title has held as much esteem as the feedback from her first ever critic, her late father-in-law Erwin Blumenfeld, who also took the first photographs of her work in 1966. “He didn’t take me seriously at first,” Blumenfeld recalls fondly. “He teased me about being a child prodigy because I had a doctorate. While he was extremely educated, he was self-taught, and he had no respect for academia. At first I didn’t want him to see my work because I was so scared that he would hate it and wouldn’t hold back in saying so, but he insisted. At the time, we lived in an old palace in Vienna, and when he came in he didn’t say a word. He just looked from one piece to another and walked out again. I was in tears. But half an hour later he came back with a camera and a roll of paper and shot for four hours.” Today, the great photographer Erwin’s name is synonymous with vintage, glossy fashion shots from Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar (he shot more Vogue covers than anyone in history), as well as some of the most iconic portraits of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. However, his early self-portraits were often distorted and disturbing, playing with his so-called fetish for beauty and women, and his lifelong fascination with the self. “He believed in beauty,” says Blumenfeld. “Everything he did influenced me, especially his use of distortion and abstraction. One of his

most famous pieces, Nude Under Wet Silk, had a huge influence on me. Having him believe in my sculptures was a greater prize than any I have won since. He never said anything he didn’t believe in.” Both artists cited one another as an influence, their subjects and themes of beauty, light and the female form regularly overlapping. While Erwin manipulated exposures and film, Helaine brings light into her work “as a fourth dimension”, a visual metaphor for transparency, which she sees as “the essence of relationships”. Neither shied away from celebrating beauty for beauty’s sake. Coincidentally, London’s Osborne Samuel gallery will also b-e celebrating a Blumenfeld legacy this month, with its Erwin Blumenfeld: From Dada to Vogue exhibition. Blumenfeld is a strong believer in sculptures belonging in public spaces and she has worked throughout her career to bring art out of galleries and into communities. “A great many artists get either comfortable or nostalgic in their visual language as they get older, whereas Blumenfeld is still pushing her own boundaries and challenging herself,” says Hignell. “In her own words: ‘The danger is not that I copy others but that I copy myself… There is no growth without change.’ She is an inspiration.” Blumenfeld’s Fortuna is now situated in Jubilee Park, Canary Wharf; Hard Beauty, showing now until 27 November, Hignell Gallery, hignellgallery.com; Erwin Blumenfeld: From Dada to Vogue, 5-29 October, Osborne Samuel, osbornesamuel.com

he worlds of jewellery and architecture regularly collide, as jewellers are inspired to emulate the dramatic, sculptural lines of buildings on a miniature, wearable scale. A case in point is Georg Jensen. Before she passed away, the Danish jeweller called upon architect Zaha Hadid to create a unique collection that drew on her artistic eye. Unveiled at this year’s Baselworld, the A/W16 range comprises five rings and three cuff bangles, all of which reference the undulating silhouettes of Hadid’s famed structures in their design. This year sees Ferragamo present its new exclusive fine jewellery collection, which is available in the Sloane Street boutique for the first time. Staying true to its heritage, each handcrafted design was forged by Florentine jewellers in workshops on the Ponte Vecchio – just steps away from the brand’s historic headquarters. Hands travel 120 degrees before automatically jumping back to resume their operation. Only 300 examples will be produced. Z10, £16,800, harrywinston.com

take a stand Since debuting prêt-à-porter in 2015, Kova is reaching new heights with its first Haute Couture jewellery collection. The range, by Russian-born designer Katie Kova, considers the concept of Russian Suprematism in six handmade cocktail rings. Rare gemstones – such as nephrite and blue spinel – have been sculpted in ivory and rose, while the 18-karat gold setting comes in white, pink or black. Kova worked with artist Naomi Filmer on the campaign, which sees jewellery pieces elevated to objet d’art status, having been displayed on a custom-made tripartite cluster of metal structures. The high seas Tessa Packard’s fine jewellery collections constantly seek to push the boundaries. The latest, For King and Country, is inspired by the Age of Discovery when the likes of Christopher Columbus took to the high seas. From South Sea pearls to semi-precious stones, the collection highlights the treasures they unearthed. Star pieces include the Explorer necklace, featuring a spinning globe, and the one-of-a-kind Opera length pearl necklace. This is the first time the designer has worked with pearls – she, too, is never afraid of a new challenge. For King and Country, from £50-25,000, tessapackard.com

timer saver Some people adore the addition of maps on the dials of dual-time or world-time wrist watches; others believe it adds clutter and cheapen overall aesthetics. Breguet purists who admired the brand’s award-winning Hora Mundi of 2011, but found the watch’s less-than-classic map motif somewhat ‘off-brand’, will be pleased to learn that the timepiece is now available with a silvered, 18-carat gold guilloche dial. The Hora Mundi became the world’s first mechanical timepiece to feature an instant ‘jump’ time-zone display, allowing its wearer to switch between cities – and automatically adjust the date, city indicator and 24-hour indicator in the process – with the push of a single button at 8 o’clock. The Hora Mundi 5727 retains its 43mm diameter, but now measures a more slender 12.6mm in height. Hora Mundi 5727, £49,400 in white gold, £49,000 in rose gold, breguet.com

“Patek Philippe’s 5140P is an absolute showstopper. The ultra-thin automatic perpetual calendar features a month and leap year counter at 3 o’clock, a 24-hour and day indicator at 9 o’clock, and a moon-phase indicator at 6 o’clock. Spectacular.” 5140P with a blue dial, £76,880, Patek Philippe, available at David M Robinson, Jubilee Place

return of

the kings As the mastermind behind Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak and Patek Philippe’s Nautilus, watch designer Gérald Genta practically invented the luxury sports watch industry. Five years after his death, his creations continue to inspire a raft of sporty reinventions WORDS: chris hall

A

sk a watch designer which watch they admire more than any other, and there is an overwhelming chance you will get only one answer: Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak. I have lost track of the number of times this has happened to me – in fact, I’ve stopped asking. Of all the watches made in the last half-century, it occupies a mythic status unmatched by anything else. The reasons why are not complicated. The Royal Oak laid down a template for a whole new style of watch, singlehandedly changing perceptions of what a luxury watch could be. It was, and is, the original luxury sports watch. It spawned a legion of successors (some would say imitators), creating a niche that no self-respecting manufacturer could afford to ignore. Its defining features were its angular, multi-faceted steel case and integrated bracelet (the links appear to flow directly from the case without the need for a pair of

lugs). Like the Rolex Submariner, its status is such that it’s almost a brand in itself – you rarely, if ever, hear it described as ‘the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak’. Created for the Italian market in particular, the Royal Oak was the creation of Gérald Genta, a designer who – in large part thanks to this very story – became the most famous and successful watch designer of the 20th century. The myth is so well-known among watch circles that it’s almost folklore. Tasked with producing something dynamic, luxurious yet sufficiently durable for young, affluent signores to wear on the beach, he defied the accepted wisdom that only precious metals were good enough. It was so difficult to make, ironically, that the prototype shown at Baselworld in 1972 was actually white gold. But, soon enough, the real (steel) deal was proving immensely popular. While it is true to say that the Royal Oak began an entire category of watches, it’s more true to say that it was Genta himself who made ‘sports

luxe’ a thing. Having lit the spark with the Royal Oak, he continued by reinventing IWC’s Ingenieur (the Ingenieur SL) and – probably his second most famous work – created the Patek Philippe Nautilus, both released in 1976. He continued in the same vein, producing integrated bracelet designs for the likes of Omega (which failed to capture the imagination in the same way), and when he established his own brand, his flagship watch was a piece called the Octo, which had a steel case and bracelet, and an octagonal bezel with a round dial. Even the landmark pieces of this genre that Genta didn’t design are often attributed to him. The third most significant sports luxe watch, Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas, was long thought to have originated from a Genta design; however, it was Jorg Hysek who created the 222, the Overseas’ forefather. Likewise, for all its similarity to the Royal Oak and Ingenieur, the Girard-Perregaux Laureato was not Genta’s work either. Casual observers of the watch industry will know that the past five or six years have been characterised by a tendency to look back, to revive, to pay homage. Our collective appetite for ‘heritage pieces’ has known no limit, and watches from the 1970s have been hit hardest of all. In 2013, IWC brought out a range of Ingenieurs bearing close resemblance to Genta’s SL. Bulgari has made hay with the Octo, proving its versatility with ‘finissimo’ ultra-thin versions and most recently a minute repeater. Other brands have cashed in on the Genta-revivalism without the need to have been there in the first place – check out the Glashütte Original Seventies, launched in 2011, for a quirky alternative.

This year, the trickle became a stream. Vacheron Constantin went first, debuting an overhauled Overseas in January (followed by world timer versions over the summer). It’s the most emphatic revamp the Overseas has had for more than a decade, with platinum-cased perpetual calendars, ultra-slim pieces and Vacheron Constantin’s first in-house automatic chronograph to boot. March saw Girard-Perregaux bring back the Laureato as part of the brand’s 225th anniversary celebrations. The watch may not be getting the attention of its more storied colleagues, but it’s compelling enough that, as it is limited to just 225 pieces, many will be left wanting. In July, Piaget re-launched its lynchpin of the 1980s, the Polo, as the Polo S. Neither a 1970s watch nor one of Genta’s design, it nevertheless qualifies – just look at it – though Piaget could have been braver with the new design. So, 2016 has already been defined as the year of sports luxe revival – and the best is yet to come. This year represents the 40th anniversary of Patek’s Nautilus, and it’s understood that a new version will land just in time for Christmas. What’s interesting, of course, is that the Royal Oak has never needed reviving. It may have seen mutations over the years – right now, AP is glorying in a full-fat range of yellow gold Royal Oaks – but the basic shape is unchanged and, crucially, if you pick one up tomorrow, it remains as impactful and captivating as it was 44 years ago. Genta may have sown the same seeds at other brands, but the original – as is so often the case – remains the best. No wonder so many designers love it.

Golden

touch

meets talented Italian jeweller Marco Bicego, who in 15 years has struck gold with his award-winning jewellery brand

Olivia Sharpe

F

ortune favours the brave, as the famous proverb goes; and when applied to Marco Bicego, never was a truer word spoken. In just over 15 years, the Italian jeweller has created a brand that both embraces and flouts his goldsmithing heritage – thereby creating something that is truly unique and modern. Having grown up in Trissino – a small commune in Vicenza, northern Italy, famed for its rich culture and tradition of goldsmithing – and being the son of an artisan, one might say Bicego was destined to become a jeweller. However, he would argue that his career path came about organically, having only decided upon this vocation after leaving school. “My family, being Italian, liked to think that I would take over the business, but they never pushed me,” he says. “I spent a lot of time on the bench as a child learning, absorbing and one day I realised I was passionate about it, but I never thought my future would be in design.” And to this day, Bicego has never had formal training as a jewellery designer. The education he received in his father’s workshop – which specialised in making gold chains – was undoubtedly invaluable. Bicego

collection

proudly advertises how all of his pieces incorporate 18-karat gold and are handcrafted in Italy. The company headquarters in Vicenza, dubbed ‘Made in Bicego’, houses 70 artisans, each of whom has been trained in the ‘bulino’ hand-etching technique that was passed down to Bicego by his father. Bicego is based in Italy, but I caught up with the eponymous founder on a flying visit to London to talk through his latest collection: Masai. Travel has always been a huge source of inspiration for Bicego and this collection is rooted in the legacy of Africa’s Masai people. By reinterpreting the tribal culture’s traditional spiral jewellery into contemporary yellow and white gold pieces – featuring multiple rows of golden coils interspersed with diamonds – the jeweller has bridged the gap between the old and the new. While Bicego has always preferred modern design, he believes it is vitally important to “look to the past in order to see the future.” The use of organic shapes and gemstones gives the jewels an easy-to-wear and versatile quality, despite their size. This collection, like all of Bicego’s to date, has been designed to be worn from day to night. “Women today, they play with jewellery, they mix and match, and this is the whole concept of Marco Bicego,” he explains. “It’s everyday jewellery that can be worn for different occasions. It can be casual, or it can be dressy. It’s up to you.” Bicego relies on his intuition at all times when coming up with new ideas. “I definitely use my instinct. I consider what the consumer wants, what they like and don’t like. At the end of the day, for every design I produce, I need to understand who will appreciate and buy it.” Having spent many years travelling the globe, the jeweller has immersed himself in different cultures and so prides himself on having an open-minded approach, not to mention a strong grasp of what his female customer is looking for and the emotional process involved in choosing a piece of jewellery. “When I go shopping, I tend to buy nothing. I have everything I need, but if you find something different, something unique and you hear yourself saying, ‘I have to have it’, then this is when you should buy.” In today’s technologydriven world Bicego notes how modern

consumers want to know every detail about a product’s origins before they commit. “It’s like with a fine wine,” he explains. “It’s not just a bottle of wine, especially if it’s expensive. You need to know which kind of bottle, the history of the producer, the grape, and so on.” With a firm hand on all aspects of the company, from design and production to distribution and marketing, Bicego is both creatively and commercially minded, and his jewellery brand has now expanded into more than 40 countries. While the US is currently its strongest market, he believes that Marco Bicego is the perfect fit for the UK customer and he hopes one day to open a store in London, but this is not something he would rush into as he would have to find “the right spot, right location, and the right investment.” Rather than joining the ranks of Harry Winston and Graff on New Bond Street, the jeweller would rather opt for a more discreet, inconspicuous location, but one which still has footfall. In person, Bicego comes across as quiet and unassuming and yet, his passion (not to mention charm) is very much evident when he discusses his business. He confides how it is always his aim to create something different. This was highlighted in his Materica collection, unveiled at this year’s Baselworld (the prestigious annual watch and jewellery convention). Quite a departure from his collections to date, Bicego had fallen in love with some fossilised stones he unearthed on one of his trips and decided to incorporate them into this experimental capsule range. While it received mixed reviews, Bicego insists that he would rather take that risk than not at all. The jeweller describes one’s head as being “like a basket” in the way that it is constantly coming up with new ideas, but the good ones are rare so he is always keeping his eyes open for new sources of inspiration. Along with creating more highend, bespoke jewellery pieces, he would love to open a restaurant in his hometown of Vicenza one day (food being his other great passion), but he is currently in the process of persuading his wife about the value of his idea. Like his covetable jewellery pieces, I am certain it is pure gold. Masai collection, from £750 – £25,000, marcobicego.com

KEEPING UP WITH

KARLIE Entrepreneur, coder, student, baker, philanthropist, vlogger, supermodel and member of the world’s most famous ‘squad’ – Karlie Kloss definitely isn’t just a pretty face. CONNIE NUTTALL meets the model on a mission

T

he face of the modelling industry is changing. For the stars of today, it is a vastly different world than that enjoyed by the ‘supers’ of the ’90s, a group that counted the likes of Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss among its number. This is thanks in no small part to the advent of social media, which has helped to propel many of the world’s most beautiful women to superstardom almost overnight; now, a model’s booking potential relies as much on the number of Instagram followers she has as on her credentials. This level of exposure has only served to amplify model ambition; now not content with dominating one industry, the stars of today are setting their sights on conquering new ground. Cara Delevingne – for example – has used modelling as a springboard for an acting career, landing parts in this year’s biggest films. Karlie Kloss, meanwhile, who has walked the runway for the likes of Christian Dior, Oscar de la Renta and Burberry – among countless others – and secured huge contracts with international brands including L’Oreal and Victoria’s Secret, has founded a baking empire, learned to code and formed a summer camp where young women can be taught to do the same. Her latest role is as ambassador of Swarovski. “It’s an honour to be part of the brand’s long history of bringing elegance to women through brilliant, unique designs,” Kloss says of the

partnership, with heartfelt enthusiasm. It’s a role she has taken over from fellow fashion superstar Miranda Kerr, another former Victoria’s Secret model, but there’s no question that the 24-year-old, Missouri-born catwalker has all the necessary credentials to step up to the plate. This supermodel, student and entrepreneur – complete with her huge social media presence – is a force to be reckoned with. One of her main extracurricular interests lies in advanced computing technology, which she studied at New York University. It was this technological curiosity that also led her to found Kode With Klossy, a coding summer camp for teenage girls with the Flatiron School in New York. The twoweek camp also provides career scholarships to 80 young women from New York, Los Angeles and Kloss’ hometown of St Louis. The model herself first enrolled in a two-week intensive course at the Flatiron School in 2014. With only 18 per cent of computer science degrees being earned by women, Kloss is trying to inspire girls interested in computer science or software engineering to learn to code.

“Women need to play a major role in the way technology is going to shape our lives and that’s why we need to be part of that next generation,” she says. Her own innate understanding of tech has no doubt helped the beauty with brains to amass her staggering online following. She boasts 5.3 million Instagram followers, 1.6 million Twitter followers, and over 174,000 people have subscribed to her YouTube channel, the snappily titled ‘Klossy’. “Taking coding classes gives you so much more understanding and insight into how social media sites function and how they are used as marketing and communication tools,” she explains, putting her own experience into action. Fashion and coding may seem like two worlds that rarely coincide, but in fact, they are very much intertwined: “We’re living in an increasingly computer and technologically driven world and the fashion industry in particular has become very connected to social media via Instagram,” Kloss explains. “Learning about the technology behind all that has been hugely useful to me in my work as a model, and particularly as a businesswoman. “I often think that modelling chose me rather than it being something I had ever thought about or imagined as a career,” Kloss continues. Aged 14, she was first discovered by a model scout at a charity fashion show in St Louis. Growing up, Kloss’s favourite classes at school were biology and maths, and she wanted to be a doctor, just like her dad. Then, after her modelling career began to take off, she maintained her “fascination with science” by learning everything she could about computer technology. It’s hard to believe that the almost-too-perfectlooking Kloss never saw herself being a model, something she blames on a lack of confidence as a kid. “As a young girl I was very tall, skinny and shy, and I was constantly getting teased at school,” she says. “I could only see my flaws and things that I didn’t like about myself, and I was so afraid of disappointing my parents and not living up to my own expectations. While I was in school I felt that I

was never going to succeed at anything.” At this point, Kloss has probably exceeded any parental expectations. As well as her modelling and coding course, Kloss created a special gluten- and dairy-free cookie recipe with Momofuku Milk Bar, which she sold in DKNY’s Soho store during Fashion’s Night Out in New York City. She calls her ‘Kookies’ the ‘Perfect 10 Kookie’ because for every tin of cookies sold, ten meals are donated to starving children all over the world. Thanks to her ‘Koding’, ‘Kookies’ and charity work, Kloss was deservedly named in Time Magazine’s 2016 list of the ‘100 Most Influential People’. The statuesque beauty thanks both her family and her friends for her success. Backstage at the 2013 Victoria’s Secret show, Kloss met pop behemoth Taylor Swift and since then, the dynamic duo have been inseparable, frequently peppering each other’s social media posts. Last year Kloss graced the cover of US Vogue with Swift, and added another string to her bow when she appeared in the singer’s recordbreaking Bad Blood music video. “Taylor and I are really close,” Kloss reveals. “We’re both 20-something women working very hard to pursue our dreams and our goals. We’re both very supportive of each other and those kinds of friendships are really powerful… I have three sisters, and my mom, and I grew up surrounded by strong women. There’s a lot to be said about women supporting other women.” Indeed, the glamorous good-girl’s visibility extends far beyond the world of fashion, so it’s no wonder that luxury brands are fighting over her. For the next two years, however, Kloss will be the (literally) dazzling new face of Swarovski as the brand reaches out to the next media-loving generation. As for her own entrepreneurial plans, Kloss is keeping her cards close to her chest when it comes to her next move. “I’m an optimistic person,” Kloss says. “I like to live each day to the fullest and do things that make me happy. I want to be a good friend, a good sister, a good businesswoman and lead a very productive and happy life.” Swarovski, Cabot Place

ournalists have a lot to thank Harry Potter for. If you’re aware of the ‘wand chooses the wizard’ motto of Mr Ollivander the wandmaker, along with all its weird and wonderful materials (unicorn hair, dragon heartstring…) then it functions as a great metaphor for my experience at TD Tom Davies. Just weeks after the optician opened its latest store in Canary Wharf, I was invited to try its bespoke service, in which a pair of glasses is custom-made in between three and six weeks. Prior to my appointment, my idea of nonconventional glasses were the black rectangular pairs sported by design agency hipsters – an unforgiving choice that I bought regardless and that jar with my small, heart-shaped face – rendering me a seven-days-a-week contact lens wearer. However, on the day of the appointment, within minutes of meeting Davies it becomes clear that what’s on offer is far more than a store tour. He tells me that the ‘right’ pair of glasses should match every one of your features, as well as your personality. And it is this commitment that sees him measuring my eyelashes ten minutes later, to ensure they won’t sweep against the lenses. For the clients who fly Davies to destinations such as Geneva to customise an entire glasses wardrobe, there are huge benefits in having a one-of-a-kind pair: you look more attractive, and are taken more seriously

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

when every millimetre and colour wrap is chosen especially for you. And, as Davies busies himself assessing the symmetry of my ears, one such customer walks into store and promptly requests one of his showpieces: it’s a gold-plated pair of specs, studded with diamonds. The cost is estimated at around £125,000. While my pair isn’t quite diamond-studded, a forensic amount of care goes into designing them. During the appointment around 50 frames are laid out in front of me and Davies works methodically, assessing the colour contrast of one style, the shape of the bridge-piece of the other. A lot of his work is intuitive, but he is armed both with measuring tools and a digital camera. It should also be said that there is a huge range of off-the-peg styles available in store, should you not want to invest in a Bespoke pair. If you do, the services of an in-store designer start from £495. “I’ve always focused on the customer,” explains Davies. “Too much existing design is based on the designer’s wish to create a masterpiece, and then hope that everyone wants it.” Ninety minutes later, I have sampled glossy acetate glasses, round owl-like lenses not dissimilar to Harry Potter’s own spectacles, and even thrown on some heart-shaped sunglasses on a whim. It soon becomes obvious Davies is assessing not only my face, but my personality. “These could be your editor-

feature

in-chief glasses,” he says, scribbling on a notepad. “But I think you’re more fun than that. “A Bespoke design consultation starts with getting to know the customer. What is their attitude like? What do they do for a living? Do they have any issues with their current frames? Perhaps the glasses slip down their nose, or maybe the customer finds they are too tight. It could be that the bridge fit is not quite right, or that their frames fail to enhance their natural features,” he explains, sketching all the while. Davies’s parents were both art teachers, and when he graduated he knew he wanted to focus on making glasses. “I chose eyewear because of how important it is to the individual. Through eyewear you see the world and the world sees you.” He is, of course, a glasses wearer himself and when we meet, his offbeat approach is reflected by a bold horn frame with a piano black front and matte white sides: studious and irreverent. “I have perfected a shape for myself, which I’ve used over the years. However, I have several versions of it. The subtleties of colour, finish and tone have a dramatic effect on how you are perceived.” One of Davies’s key considerations is material. He can work with feather-light buffalo horn frames that have a discreet and well-dressed appeal; sporty titanium frames and glossier, more pronounced acetate styles. One of Davies’s more intense projects was the creation of a pair of frames worn by actor Henry Cavill in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in collaboration with Michael Wilkinson. “When [costume director] Michael Wilkinson and I started speaking about the project, it was initially to help with fitting. However, it was clear we both had the same passion for this iconic frame,” he says. “The glasses had to look good, but I didn’t want to make it look like Superman was wearing cool glasses.” As I write, I’m waiting for the finishing touches to be applied to my own oval, tortoise-shell, blackarmed, monogrammed glasses with a snug fit. I’ve seen them, tried them on, planned them into forthcoming outfits and insured them. And now I’m daydreaming of my next pair… Bespoke service, from £495, TD Tom Davies, Cabot Place

the new no. 5 Every woman needs a signature scent, and for most this means one brand and one brand only: Chanel. Arguably the most iconic perfume in history, Chanel No. 5 was created by French-Russian perfumer Ernest Beaux and quickly established itself into the archives of beauty history. Fast forward to 2016 and the brand is unveiling No. 5 L’Eau – a lighter, more delicate incarnation of its ancestor – which combines notes of lemon, mandarin and orange with rose, jasmine and ylang ylang to create an immensely fresh fragrance. With a campaign fronted by Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose, the launch points to Chanel’s future, while giving a dutiful nod to its past. £96 for 100ml, Chanel, Boots, Canada Place

the scent of

success Fashion and fragrance: the two have gone hand in hand since Coco Chanel caused a sensation back in the 1920s. Now, the allure of perfume for designers proves to be as potent as ever, as KATY PARKER discovers

T

he legendary Coco Chanel made no secret of her love of perfume, boldly stating once that “a women who doesn’t wear perfume has no future.” Indeed, the fashion designer has played no small part in making the fragrance industry what it is today – for while perfumemaking can be charted back to the second millennium BCE, it was Chanel who brought scent to the fore, establishing its power as a highly commercial, marketable product; particularly when it bears the name of one of the world’s most famous fashion houses. The launch of Chanel No. 5 in 1921 presented a seismic shift for both the fashion and beauty industries – the two worlds collided in a way that they hadn’t done previously, and for the first time, fragrance began to dominate, proving that it could be more lucrative than clothing and accessories. More than 90 years later, and brands continue to hop on the gold-plated bandwagon; this year has seen the launch of fragrances by Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton and, most recently, Christian Louboutin. Evidently, designers and labels still regard fragrance as forming an essential part of their business strategy – presenting a sure-fire way to strengthen the

value of their brand. Part of the root of fragrance and fashion’s success is the relative accessibility of perfume, providing consumers with a way of owning a slice of luxury, without the exorbitant price tag. Buying a bottle of My Burberry at £65, for example, when a trench coat retails at more than £1,000, presents an affordable way in for those who identify with the label. Speaking of identity, the question is raised of how a fashion brand uses its fragrance to cement its own position within the marketplace. In part, this is drawn from the design of the bottle, with the latest perfume from Hermès – Galop d’Hermès – sporting a stirrup-shaped design; an homage to the brand’s equestrian heritage. Equally, the flacon of Miss Dior echoes the tailored yet curvaceous silhouette closely associated with the Dior ‘New Look’ of the 1940s. Often these bottles become objets d’art in their own right, much like the couture gowns and fabulous footwear these designers are known

Clockwise from top left: Chanel No. 5 L’Eau, £96 (100ml); Michael Kors Wonderlust, £84 (100ml); My Burberry Black, £92 (90ml); Galop d’Hermès, £183 (50ml); Stella McCartney POP, £74 (100ml); Louis Vuitton, £180 each (100ml); Calvin Klein Euphoria for Her, £70 (100ml); Miu Miu, £92 (100ml); Trouble in Heaven by Christian Louboutin Beaute, £215 (80ml); McQueen Eau de Parfum, £95 (75ml); Gucci Guilty Pour Femme, £68 (100ml); Balenciaga B, £67 (50ml); Stella Eau de Parfum, £74 (100ml); Marc Jacobs Divine Decadence, £96 (100ml), all available at Boots, Canada Square, and Selfridges, selfridges.com; hermes.com; louisvuitton.com

for. The new bottle from Christian Louboutin was designed in collaboration with Thomas Heatherwick – the man behind the dazzling cauldron for the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony – and features an opening in its centre, which forces the fragrance to loop around the bottle, representing Louboutin’s fascination with the idea that “liquid is alive”. Other designers choose to convey the essence of their brand through the scent that lies within the bottle. This year’s fragrance by Alexander McQueen, for example, perfectly evokes both the label’s delicate femininity and its penchant for dark romance, with a bouquet featuring top notes of black pepper and clove layered over delicate floral scents. Created under the directorship of Sarah Burton, the designer said of the process, “We wanted to create something that was truly unique and told a story. The idea of these beautiful fragile-looking flowers, which bloom at night and use their scent to attract insects, rather than their beauty, felt very McQueen. These scents are all about femininity, seductiveness, beauty and empowerment.” As is often the case in the world of fashion, the power of celebrity plays a crucial role in

the launch of a perfume, helping to establish its personality. Screen siren Margot Robbie currently fronts the campaign for Calvin Klein’s Euphoria, an enticing, sensual fragrance, while doe-eyed Natalie Portman was chosen as the face of Miss Dior, epitomising the perfume’s fresh, innocent appeal. Stella McCartney selected Lourdes (daughter of Madonna) and musician Grimes to promote her young, fun, irreverent new fragrance entitled POP. McCartney says of the scent, “POP is a spirit. It is about capturing and celebrating that very special and exciting time when you are finding yourself and coming into your own. It is about freedom and starting your life away from judgements or labels.” Ultimately, this is what fragrance is about; in helping to assert your place in the world, it forms an important part of self-expression, in the same way that fashion does. As Chanel discovered all those years ago, the two coming together just makes perfect scents.

“To find the right whisky for your palate you have to explore and be willing to try”

T

he Macallan’s new Double Cask takes its place effortlessly alongside the brand’s other 12-year-old expressions: Fine Oak and Sherry Oak. Double Cask’s savoir faire lies in its marriage of European and American oak and has resulted in beautifully balanced flavours. The Macallan’s head of education Daryl Haldane explains what all the fuss is about and how we can be a part of this exciting single malt movement. “A unique characteristic of our whisky is that it is massively varied in taste and texture. You have a very light and flowery whisky with the Fine Oak, a much more intense, complex and balanced whisky in the Double Cask and when you get to the Sherry Oak you get a very rich and sweet style of The Macallan. “For a whisky novice I would suggest The Macallan 12 Years Old Fine Oak. If you like spirits and already enjoy rum or blended whiskies, The Macallan Double Cask is another great way for you to begin your journey. “To find the right whisky for your palate you have to explore and be willing to try, in a similar way to coffee. When you start drinking coffee you make allowances: you add sugar or have a mocha and then two years later you’re drinking espresso. You have to find out what your first great experience of whisky is going to be – perhaps a cocktail, a food pairing or

something as simple as a whisky and soda – and then you can start enjoying and experimenting with different ways of drinking it. “I recommend people share some food while they enjoy the whisky. The Macallan Double Cask is quite an intense flavour; I always find lots of beautiful vanillas and brioche notes in it that work well with seafood such as scallops and tapas dishes like salted meat, ham and olives. The whisky is able to compete with those kinds of flavours but also brings a balance as well. “I was in a Hong Kong hotel yesterday

and the bartender created a drink using mustard. The spicy, savoury and almost umami flavours worked brilliantly. “As we come into autumn I really enjoy The Macallan on ice. Sometimes – on colder evenings especially – I like a neat whisky with coffee, and every now and then I like an Old Fashioned. “We have a new distillery coming in 2018, which is incredibly exciting. It shows that we are very confident about what will happen in the future and we want to continue to make brilliant whisky for another 200 or 300 years.” themacallan.com

RESTAURANT REVIEW

A Room With a View

For a buzzy restaurant with classic, well-executed British dishes and stellar views over Canary Wharf, look no further than The Pearson Room, which has something for everyone, as CHARLOTTE PHILLIPS discovers

T

he first thing you’ll notice about The Pearson Room is its floor-to-ceiling windows. This is Canary Wharf, with its many skyscrapers and peoplewatching opportunities, and the views are just fabulous. Apparently, everybody else already knows this, because upon exiting the lift directly into the restaurant on a Thursday evening we see The Pearson Room is absolutely packed, with what looks like a mixture of post-work revellers, first dates and friends unwinding at the (almost) end of the week. The décor is both intimate and casual: think long wooden tables alongside small, circular ones, low tan leather banquettes, stainless steel ceiling elements and exposed lightbulbs. Nabbing a table in the corner, we start with Prosecco and an extensive selection of bar snacks: hummus, chicken wings (a word of caution – they’re seriously spicy) and a serving of what the restaurant calls avocado salsa (and we call guacamole) that is so good, we use spoons rather than the accompanying tortilla chips. The menu is simple and you want to try everything – The Pearson Room is

the sort of place you could visit every day and not get sick of it. When it comes to ordering, our eyes are bigger than our stomachs. The chef works with fresh, local produce, so the menu reflects the seasons. We start with salads: broccoli and artichoke, and seared, very rare tuna on a bed of spinach, which is particularly excellent and a meal unto itself; but, of course we don’t stop there, and our main courses are no less satisfying. The salmon is perfectly tender inside and crisp on the outside, and the steak is delicious, cut into strips and properly pink. We share a host of veggie sides: the green beans are particularly good, probably thanks to all the butter. Utterly stuffed, we can’t succumb to more than a fruit

The chef works with fresh, local produce, so the menu reflects the seasons platter for dessert, but the table next to us are in raptures over their cheesecake. The cocktail menu is extensive and almost ridiculously appealing. If you can resist the Bounty (rum, Amaretto and grated dark chocolate topped with ‘homemade edible molecular pineapple and coconut foam’) or the Forbidden Fruit (potato vodka, quince syrup and apple juice, served in a glass rimmed with – wait for it – popping candy), then you’re a stronger woman than I. Staff couldn’t have been friendlier, despite the fact that we stayed for over two hours, and service was excellent. The Pearson Room has hit on a winning formula. Not remotely pretentious, with good, simple food and a fun but not overbearing atmosphere. Go, immediately. The Pearson Room, Canada Square, thepearsonroom.co.uk

the east

Looking at other countries’ traditions and remedies that have lasted for generations is something we should be doing, particularly when it comes to the way we eat. Chefs and foodies are starting to take note WORDS: charlotte phillips

I

n the West, we tend to like fads; we assume that the newest diet trend has to be the most effective. However, Eastern countries – such as China, Japan and India – generallly stick to diet regimes of old – “what their greatgrandparents and their grandparents ate. Our digestive system does not evolve as fast as the food industry does,” says Miriam Gubovic, nutritionist at Canary Wharf’s healthy eatery CPRESS. And it’s working. In 2015, Japan had the world’s second-highest life expectancy, at 84.7 years, followed by Singapore and Macau. The UK was number 33 on the list (sourced by CIA World Factbook), at 80.5. “Healing has a different form in the East – it is more about prevention and long-term effects rather than quick fixes often offered by the Western medicine,” says Gubovic. When used holistically and in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, Eastern diets contribute to healing. Now, the Western focus on health and wellness, and ever-savvy consumers mean more of us are seeking to emulate this. “In Asia, herbs and spices have historically been prized for their health and medicinal benefits. Recipes have been influenced by this and have evolved over time accordingly,” says Rohit Chugh,

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

owner of Canary Wharf’s Indian restaurant Chai Ki. “Cloves, for example, have strong antioxidant properties, and fenugreek seeds are a great source of minerals and vitamins. Recently, turmeric has been talked about as a wonder spice that can prevent a range of health issues,” Chugh explains. Indeed, turmeric protects against premature skin ageing, helps to clear acne and encourages cell renewal. Plus, curcumin in turmeric works to fight free radicals and aid with blood flow and circulation. CPRESS is just one brand making use of the superspice, in its turmeric hummus and ‘charged-up’ juice: carrot, orange, pineapple, lemon, lime and turmeric. “With the amounts of inflammation-causing processed foods we consume today, we can really benefit from herbs and spices that fight inflammation and free radicals,” says Gubovic. “Anti-inflammatory agents such as turmeric and ginger help the body build a strong immune system.” Furthermore, “the Asian diet [includes] high amounts of seafood (being an island nation surrounded by the Pacific Ocean). Their diet also consists of a lot of tofu and seaweeds,” says Hamish Brown, chef at Canary Wharf’s Japanese

low res

food & drink

Roka restaurant. Other beneficial Japanese spices and herbs – many of which appear on Roka’s menu – include “ginger, coriander, sansho, shiso, karashi, shichimi togarashi and yuzu”, he says. We can also look to the East for guidance on how, as well as what, we eat. “Ayurveda suggests that your stomach be filled a third each with food, water and air at mealtime,” says Shrankhla Holecek, founder of UMA oils, and Gubovic agrees, saying: “A lot of Eastern cultures practice moderation,” whereas we in the West tend to overindulge. Plus, Chugh adds, “Ingredients are also, in the main, used only when in season.” It should be clear that eating one particular spice or food may not have an impact on overall health. We can’t forget that other elements of Eastern life contribute to wellbeing, like more natural vitamin D from sunlight and increased activity. “Construction workers in Tokyo have a group stretch and workout prior to commencing their day,” says Gubovic. They also adopt other beneficial holistic Ayurveda principles that we could emulate: Holecek suggests “daily drybrushing to cleanse your lymphatic system”. While there is no silver bullet, we can be inspired by the East in ensuring foods are balanced, looking to nature to heal the body and knowing that what and how we eat has a significant overall effect on health and healing. The first NSX rewrote the sports car rulebook. Now, after an 11-year gap, it’s back. Matthew Carter asks: “Can it do the same again?”

B

ack in 1990, when the original Honda NSX was born, high-performance sports cars were technically advanced and stunning to look at, but you needed the skill of an F1 driver to get the most out of them. So when Honda developed its New Sports eXperimental – the world’s first mass-produced car with an all-aluminium body – it turned to World Champion Ayrton Senna (then a McLaren-Honda Grand Prix driver) to help with the fine tuning. The result, naturally, was quick and handled superbly, but there was one big difference between it and its rivals… it was as easy to drive as a Honda Civic. As a direct result, Ferrari, for one, was forced to rethink how it designed its cars. It was also the car that Gordon Murray benchmarked when creating the McLaren F1, a car that was umpteen times more expensive than the Honda. That first-generation NSX stayed in production until 2005, when it withered away and wasn’t replaced. Indeed, a couple of false starts aside, Honda has stayed away from the rarefied world of the sports car for more than a decade. Until now. Welcome the second-generation NSX, only this time it apparently stands for New Sports eXperience.

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

Designed and built in America but with powertrain input from Japan, this too looks the part and is technically way more advanced than the original. But, yes, it’s just as easy to drive, too. At its heart is a newly developed twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine mounted amidships that develops 507bhp. Not bad, you might think… but that’s not the whole story, not by a long chalk. This is a modern petrol-electric hybrid car so it also has a small electric Direct Drive Motor. This reduces turbo lag and also acts as a generator to recharge the lithium-ion batteries needed for two more electric motors, one each driving the front wheels. Four engines, then, and four-wheel drive… It has a nine-speed dual clutch transmission, a world first, in which seven closely spaced ratios are for everyday use with an ultra-low first set aside for racetrack launches and the ninth for super-economical motorway cruising. Packing all that in behind the driver and passenger means heat management is critical. As a result, the NSX has no fewer than ten different heat exchangers – radiators, intercoolers and oil coolers – to keep the temperatures down. And while aluminium is still used for the body’s spaceframe, the new NSX has a carbon-fibre floor

with high-strength steel used in safety-critical areas. When it comes to torsional rigidity, the NSX’s body is said to be three times stiffer than the rival Audi R8 and Ferrari 488. Naturally, a great deal of time was spent during the development phase on its aerodynamics and, as a result, the car has three times as much downforce at the rear than at the front for optimal high-speed handling. But just imagine how the designers, who spent hours in the wind tunnel perfecting the shape, must have felt when confronted with European legislation that demands a large lump of plastic holding the number plate is glued to its otherwise svelte nose. Electronics, too, play a huge role in the car’s performance. There are no fewer than four drive modes, a drive-by-wire throttle and drive-by-wire brakes, too. Best carry a set of spare fuses, just in case. It is a technical tour de force and, frankly,

s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s

sounds quite daunting to drive. But it just isn’t. Depending on where you’re driving you can dial up Quiet mode, Sport, Sport+ or Track. Quiet mode (shame they didn’t call it Stealth mode: this is a sports car after all, and they’re not meant to be quiet) means you can creep silently away on pure electric power until you want a bit more performance. It then shifts to Sport mode and the V6 chimes in. In both these modes, the NSX is totally benign. The ride is extremely comfortable, thanks in part to its active magnetorheological dampers, and the cabin remarkably civilised. But when you want a little more action, select Sport+ and the dampers get stiffer, the steering gets sharper, the gearshifts get quicker – although there are paddles behind the wheel, best to leave it in automatic mode as, frankly, the software is better than any human brain – and the throttle response more urgent.

motoring

And then, of course, comes the full track mode in which you can use launch control to spit you down the track, the traction from all four wheels being mightily impressive. The engine note gets louder, the stability control less intrusive and the whole thing more agile, despite the extra weight the car has to carry, thanks to those electric motors, batteries and electronic wizardry. But while a few laps of Estoril, the one-time Grand Prix circuit in Portugal, showed that the NSX does have a meaner side, it was, if anything, more impressive on the local roads. Here, it’s the ease of driving that comes to the fore. It’s the little things that make the difference, like the fact that the front A-pillars are super thin so as not to hamper visibility. In fact, aside from an annoying reflection of the engine in the rear view mirror, this is one of the easiest mid-engine sports cars to place on the road. It’s also reasonably practical. There’s not a lot of storage space in the cockpit, but the rear boot (unlike a Porsche, there’s no stowage space under the nose) is big enough to take a set of clubs should golf be your passion. And it is so refined. The ride quality is exemplary and the cabin is commendably quiet, meaning this really is an everyday car. Oddly, though, that might be its Achilles Heel.

If you are looking for raw excitement from your car, you might find the NSX a little too clever for its own good. It doesn’t have the soul of a Ferrari (but then it is half the price of a 488) nor the down-to-earth analogue feel of an Audi R8 or Porsche 911. Nor does the interior have the same level of quality as its rivals, with plastics that look and feel like plastic and a distinctly average infotainment touchscreen. But when it comes to technology, the NSX is right up there, rewriting the rulebook just as its Senna-approved forefather did. There’s no two ways about it: the NSX represents the future of the sports car. Welcome back NSX.

TRAVEL sky-high Standards I n a city of gleaming skyscrapers – skyscrapers that perform an illuminations show at 8pm each night – size matters. And, occupying floors 102-118 of International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong, Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong is currently the tallest hotel in the world (488m). Glossy throughout, with golden corridors and two Michelinstarred restaurants, its upper floors offer views over Victoria Harbour. This being Hong Kong, the daytime haziness means you might not get the full effect until the evening, when being situated across the waterfront overlooking the opposing skyline has its advantages. The hotel has put its key assets on its highest floors. Ozone, a stylish bar with a mirrored ceiling, white leather seating and a fragrant cocktail menu, is ripe for peacocking and has a dedicated lift service whizzing the affluent up to the dance floor. The Ritz-Carlton’s swimming pool is three floors lower, conversely blissfully quiet and deserted, flanked with white loungers and Jacuzzis, and sharing a space with its spa and gym. It’s the highest swimming pool in the world – there’s a theme here. Residents of the club suites enjoy access to all-day dining at a dedicated lounge (including cocktails and Champagne), which works wonders when jet lag strikes and you’re hungry at unpredictable hours. Complimentary snacks on offer range from tuna carpaccio to mashed potatoes with truffle, as well as Champagne in the evening. There are newspapers and Wi-Fi available and the space is smart and discreet – suitable for those who don’t want to work in their rooms while

away. Such a space is not a given in Hong Kong – many renowned hotels will suggest you take your laptop to the bar: choose wisely. Club suites also offer access to a chauffeur service (depending on availability). The hotel is situated in Kowloon, just 20 minutes from the airport, and many choose to take a car downtown to Temple Street market for the kind of fuss-free authenticity that those staying in the financial district rarely see, without having to compromise on a luxurious style of accommodation. I

can see nothing but white, crystal-flecked snow, majestic mountains and an endless expanse of nothingness. Skis are strapped to my feet, a harness is around my waist, and an eight-foot-long kite is stretched out in front of me. I’m standing atop a frozen lake waiting; just waiting and waiting, until, without a moment’s notice, the wind makes its first appearance, rushing in to transform the scene. My kite opens itself up like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon and I’m lifted violently from the ground. It’s a startling introduction to the world of kite skiing. Kite skiing – or snow kiting as it is also known – is like nothing I have ever tried before. Given that I haven’t even mastered standing up on ice skates, let alone snowboarding or skiing (me on skis conjures images of Bambi on ice, as my legs move in opposite directions and my body will not cooperate with my brain), I’m not entirely sure the activity is going to agree with me. When done well, it can look like parasailing on ice. Using the power of the wind, and just quick and gentle movements of the 25-metre line anchoring you to the kite, you can soar across flat snow and ice with up to 40mph winds. My instructor flies through the air, turning direction as easily as turning his head, gliding with ease and finesse. It’s an easy technique to learn but much harder to truly master. There’s a strong element of risk so the safety talk is extensive, but, really, it’s hard to feel bored when you’re standing in the Swiss mountains on a crisp winter’s day, basking in the midday sun. There can be a lot of waiting around, hoping for wind to appear, but when it arrives, it’s worth it for the sheer exhilaration of trying to control the weight and power of the kite, and the terror of desperately trying to stay grounded. Whenever I get in a muddle with the kite strings, or find myself gliding too far afield, the instructors appear out of nowhere and rescue me on their own skis. After two lessons, I’m starting to get the hang of it and I find myself enjoying it far more than skiing – much to my suprise. When your ‘holiday’ is as active as this, you will want to seek out the very best hotel to recover, relax and unwind. The best of the best, I discover, is the Grand Hotel Kronenhof. It’s situated in Pontresina, close to glitzy St. Moritz but with an

altogether calmer, more refined atmosphere. This village is focused on a slower pace of life, rather than the shopping and Champagne lifestyle of its nearby neighbour, though if you wanted to speed things up, you’re still just minutes away from soaking up the glamour in the heart of St. Moritz. Since 1848, the hotel has stood formidably looking down over the village, commanding full attention – its Neo-Baroque architecture casts an impressive shadow over its surroundings. A modest entrance opens up into the grandest of lobbies, set against a backdrop of the Val Roseg pine forest. There are royal touches in the crown-shaped chandeliers, warm cream tones and deep red furnishings – if there were ever a palace that could be described as homely and welcoming, it would look like this. First stop: the spa. It’s just as impressive as the rest of the hotel, if not more so, albeit more modern: a generously sized pool overlooking the stunning landscape is a sci-fi wonder to be marvelled at. Housed in a glass dome that gives panoramic views of snow-blanketed mountains, it features unusual curved rust-coloured pillars, and offsets the traditional hotel. And that’s just the beginning. Where you would expect to find the standard sauna and steam room combination, there are numerous pockets of relaxation: a saltwater grotto, Finnish sauna, floating grotto, stone steam bath and relaxation room don’t even cover the full list of what’s on offer, not to mention the gym, beauty department and private spa. Pampered beyond reason, I struggle to pull myself away from the mountain views, but I needn’t worry, because it’s hard to escape them in this hotel – the Kronenhof has utilised its surroundings superbly. I pull on my fluffy white robe and slippers and wander back to my room, which is simply furnished but with everything I need, leaving the focus on what’s outside. Each time I walk past the windows or balcony doors, I get a glimpse of the impressive Bernina Range glaciers lining the edge of Pontresina, as well as being treated to a view of the Alps high above St. Moritz. It’s the middle of February, the temperatures are sub-zero and I can practically feel the frostbite taking hold, but nothing is going to

stop me from sitting on my balcony and taking in this postcard-worthy view. A quick change into formal attire and it’s time for dinner in the Grand Restaurant, a lavish room decorated with opulent golden drapes and lit through impressive floor-to-ceiling windows. The staff can’t be faulted, the food is exquisite and the setting is remarkable. If you want to mix up your dining arrangements each night, that’s catered for with the hotel’s other restaurants and bars, including the Kronenstübli, a historic, traditional Swiss restaurant. There you can sample the signature dish of pressed duck, an early 19thcentury French dish prepared at your table with an unusual contraption designed to press all the juice out of the meat – a spectacle worth seeing. Or if you want to venture outside of this opulent castle, you’re welcome to pay a visit to the Kronenhof’s sister, the Kulm Hotel in centre of St. Moritz. But for a taste of the true Swiss experience, try a pit stop at the unassuming Berninahaus after a strenuous day kite skiing. A charming, traditional wooden hillside house, Berninahaus is celebrating its 500-year anniversary and serves a firm Swiss favourite: cheese fondue, made in equal parts from local mountain cheese, and white wine. It’s everything any cheese-lover has ever wanted, and a welcome respite from the cold outside. Despite the gooey feast, the owners manage to steal the show, thanks to their charming, if a little alarming, Swiss getup: think pigtails, ribbons, checked dresses and the Sound of Music. All we’re missing is some background yodelling. Cheese, adventure and stunning scenery: this is your dream ski holiday, reimagined. The three-night Kite Skiing Package at Grand Hotel Kronenhof costs from CHF 1,775 (approx. £1,220) per person per stay in a double room and is available on the following dates: 8-11 December 2016, 15-18 December 2016, 12-15 January 2017 and 16-19 March 2017. ong stretches of sandy beach, more than 700 pieces of public art – much of it outdoors – and a sprawling expanse of green that’s more than twice the size of New York’s Central Park aren’t the first things that come to mind when you mention Chicago. For a city with a reputation for busy men in suits and buildings with the pinstripes to match – so tall that they’re often, and famously, photographed with their spires and rooftops mingling with the clouds – it’s rather outdoorsy. In spite of, or perhaps because of, its sharp focus on architectural innovation and experimentation, Chicago knows how to make the most of its outdoor spaces. At the edge of Lake Michigan, beach options include 31st Street Beach, with its Chicago skyline view, and Oak Street beach, close to the newly

renovated kitsch Navy Pier with its ferris wheel. Lincoln Park, situated along the lakefront and sprawling across 8.2 sq km (by comparison, New York’s Central Park’s is 3.41 sq km) is home to one of the oldest zoos in the US – complete with resident polar bears – the City Green farmers’ market and a theatre that dates back to the 1920s with a healthy performing arts roster. Even on a grey spring day (don’t come to Chicago for the weather, except in the height of summer) I spotted dog walkers and runners out in force, passing a large bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln. If you can find it, just north of the zoo is a secret garden with a Prairie School-era pavilion and a lily pool designed by landscape architect Alfred Caldwell – the idyllic garden is a popular spot for engagement photos.

My favourite stretch of green space in the Windy City has to be Millennium Park, right by the epic skyscrapers of the Loop. It’s home to colourful scatterings of wildflowers in its Lurie Garden, the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion concert venue, with its curved stained steel design, and the dreamy Cloud Gate. More colloquially known as The Bean, this is the mindboggling sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, which reflects the city skyline like a giant sci-fi mercury droplet. Walking underneath is unexpectedly disorientating, as if looking up into a vortex in its centre as all surrounding sound is muffled and distorted, while the temptation to take silly mirror photos is all too much – my friend and I left half an hour and 100 selfies later. Leaving the 100-ton stainless steel sculpture, a wander into the thick of the Art Deco, Modernist and Chicago School skyscrapers reveals more openair art. A colourful Marc Chagall Four Seasons mosaic arrived in the Chase Tower Plaza in 1974, while an untitled 50ft curved Cubist street sculpture in Daley Plaza is the unmistakable work of Pablo Picasso – the artist apparently refused payment, wanting the piece to be a gift to the “great gangster city”, as he called it. A Frank Gehry Icehenge sculpture doubles as a security desk in the glasswalled lobby of the Inland Steel building. Further towards the suburbs, you’ll find constantly changing outdoor artwork and events at The 606 elevated park trail – Chicago’s answer to Manhattan’s High Line – along what used to be the Bloomingdale railway line. Having opened a year ago in the fast-gentrifying neighbourhoods of Logan Square and Bucktown, the carefully planted greenery was just beginning to thicken when I was there in the spring, while the trail had a relaxed, local Sunday, family-friendly feel. That evening we headed back to The Peninsula for a night in one of its lavish suites, where chrysanthemum wall art is hand-embroidered and tech touches (handy, not intrusive) add to the sense of luxury. A button in the marble bathroom dims the lighting and plays tranquil spa music – all the better for enjoying the Oscar de la Renta products. The hotel capitalises on its location: floor-to-ceiling windows in the palm-lined pool offer skyscraper

views, while an ice rink pops up on the terrace in winter – a prime spot overlooking the upscale section of Michigan Avenue, Magnificent Mile, with its highend shops and striking 1920s buildings. If cityscapes are your thing, you’ll want to be up high. Chicago Helicopter Experience offers helicopter tours, while the Willis Tower – formerly the world’s tallest building, now the eighth – has equally jaw-dropping vistas in its Skydeck. Here The Ledge – a glass box that extends 4.3ft out from the wall, an exhilarating 103 floors up above the pavement – offers an adrenaline hit with a view. Not quite as high up but with an excellent vantage point from its terrace over Millennium Park and beyond to Lake Michigan is Cindy’s Rooftop. Under a glass ceiling, we refuel with some locally sourced trout from Lake Superior, with horseradish yogurt, beetroot and pumpernickel. With its trendy fermented kombucha teas, one of which is brewed according to the moon, Cindy’s is a prime example of the hip dining scene in Chicago – which recently hosted the Oscars of the food world, the James Beard Foundation Awards. After all that pavement pounding, we took the pace down a few notches with a drive out to the historic Galena district in northwestern Illinois. The tiny city of 3,000, surrounded by rolling green hills, looks much like it would have when Lincoln came to deliver a speech here in the 1850s, a few years before becoming president. In amongst all Galena’s old-world charm is the Belvedere Mansion, with its immaculate gardens and Victorian wicker porch, the small-scale Blaum Bros distillery and bar that specialises in gin, whiskey and vodka. Relaxation is the mantra here – unwind in the Goldmoor Inn’s in-room hot tubs. Keep an eye out for pelicans and bright red northern cardinals (Illinois’ state bird), chat to friendly locals and wander the town’s quaint antique shops – filled to the rafters with vintage homewares and interesting badges, books, perfume bottles and Art Deco brooches. And for the sweetest of endings, head to the 100-year-old Chocolaterie Stam for its creme brûlée chocolates and tantalising cinnamon truffles. Suites at The Peninsula Chicago start at £434, peninsulahotels.com/chicago. Visit enjoyillinois.com for more information

culptures by Nigel Hall RA since 1986 are showing both in the Lobby of One Canada Square and in outdoor locations at Canary Wharf. The exhibition focuses on Hall’s use of elliptical and orbital configurations, which have featured in his work since his early years as a sculptor. The change in shaped or linear elements that the viewer experiences when moving round Hall’s sculptures has parallels in the way objects are viewed when walking through a landscape, around a room, or along a street. Shapes appear to change, as do the relationships of elements within a work. Looking at a single sculpture from differing viewpoints is virtually akin to viewing entirely different sculptures. Hall works in bronze, steel and wood on a range of scale. Nigel Hall was elected a Royal Academician in 2003. He is regarded as one of Britain’s leading sculptors with work shown widely in the UK and internationally. His work is found in numerous private and public collections worldwide. He is represented in Britain by Annely Juda Fine Art. annelyjudafineart.co.uk

Stepney Jewish Community Centre Until 8 November

Jewish Care’s Stepney Jewish Community Centre has been at the heart of East London’s Jewish community since it was opened by Queen Mary in 1937. Offering a relaxed and caring environment where older people living in the area can meet up with old friends and make new ones, it is the only remaining Jewish service left in the area today, quite a change from 50 years ago when the East End was the focus of a lively Jewish community. A ‘second home’ for its members, the Centre provides a wide range of stimulating activities from art to creative writing; keep fit, reminiscence groups, entertainment, regular outings and therapeutic activities. The lovely garden and patio are of particular importance for those who don’t have gardens of their own. jewishcare.org

SALES Andrew Groocock, head of sales at Knight Frank Canary Wharf, comments on the trends in the residential sales market

As the dust begins to settle following the EU referendum, it is now time to take stock and see how things look in the Docklands property market. The biggest thing that I have noticed in my office is that we have actually had the busiest August for over six years. By busy I mean we have agreed more deals, registered more applicants and conducted more viewings – all of which is extremely positive and has continued into the early September market. There is no doubt that a large portion of this activity is from pent up interest from those who had stepped back from the market pre-referendum, who now feel comfortable that the Docklands property market still represents good value for money. But, we have also seen a dramatic increase in overseas buyers and have dealt with applicants being referred to us by a whole host of our international offices.

PROPERTY “At the national level, both prices and sales are expected to rise over both the three- and 12-month horizons as activity in the market stabilises” – Simon Rubinsohn, chief economist of Royal

Institution of Chartered Surveyors

We have seen a dramatic increase in overseas buyers So far post-referendum, we have dealt with buyers from America, Australia, Russia, Hong Kong, Singapore and China, to name just a few. It really highlights how important tapping into an agent’s global network can be. The other noticeable trait post-referendum is that the dramatic price drops predicted by some have failed to materialise. The market is always price-sensitive in the Docklands and making sure an agent has comparable evidence when valuing your property is more important than ever. Yes, we are having to work harder to sell properties, the average selling time has been slightly extended and more viewings are required to sell the property, but in general prices have remained steady. The biggest problem we are now experiencing is a shortage of stock to show our growing number of applicants in what is historically a very busy autumn market.

pARTY ANIMAL Transform your home into an animal sanctuary, without any of the mess, with this new collection from interior design brand Andrew Martin International. In collaboration with London-based artist Holly Frean, the range brings a playful yet elegant touch to a property. Using a selection of Frean’s drawings and paintings, the collection includes penguin and monkey wallpapers, printed elephant fabrics, velvet lions and woollen bears. Frean started her career as an architect but soon painting took over. She has since exhibited internationally, and has won numerous fine art awards. We love the Two by Two wallpaper, which is a postcard-type layout featuring 55 pairs of different animals – great for grown-ups and children alike. It also comes in two colourways. Scandi SLEEPING A good bed set equals a good night’s sleep, and luckily for us, luxury bed linen brand Cloth & Clay launched in the UK in September, creating striking yet timeless bedding and accessories. It has two collections, Nordic Nights and Hue, both made from the finest materials, including 300 thread count pure cotton. The Nordic Nights range is inspired by serene landscapes such as mountain ranges, and the Nyoka set [pictured] looks like the perfect place to rest your head after a long day. The print on the duvet cover is a real photograph captured at dawn and instantly brings a sense of calm to any bedroom. Who said sleep can’t be stylish? Nordic Nights Nyoka, from £120 for a double bedding set, clothnclay.com

ormally, as the summer nights begin to darken, we have periodically found that the market did the same, but as things stand, the market is going from strength to strength. Stock levels remain at an all-time high, and although applicant levels are slightly down from this time last year, we have agreed more lets over the summer than ever seen in the past. I do believe that the Canary Wharf area had a shock to its system. For many years we have seen price increases year-onyear which, in my eyes, began to make the area less

If a landlord doesn’t price and present their property correctly, they will be gathering dust over the next few months attractive to newcomers to London. We started to see pricing on a par with central London and we simply aren’t – the Canary Wharf area has its own market and pricing. When I have written this column in the past, I have always emphasised the importance of agent choice and pricing. I strongly stand by this, even more so at present as we are in the toughest market we have seen in ten years. If a landlord doesn’t price and present their property correctly, they will be gathering dust over the next few months. If there are any landlords reading this and their property has been empty for four weeks, there is a reason for this, and it’s not due to a lack of applicants. Although the market is tough, now is a great time to let for both landlords and tenants. Pricing is a little more realistic for them both and we are seeing a lot more Grade-A corporate tenants showing strong interest in the area again. In fact, our corporate lets through our Knight Frank Corporate Services team have doubled in the past 12 months.

Central London Residential Development market update, october 2016 DIANA ALAM, Head of residential development sales, JLL Images for illustrative purposes only

Images Courtesy of: JLL

I

n latest research, JLL concludes that the Central London Development residential sales market has started to brighten during Q3 but the outlook for London’s housing supply is increasingly worrying. The number of new-build starts and the number of new planning applications have declined significantly during 2016. During Q4 2015 there were 5,260 unit starts across central London but in Q1 and Q2 this year there have been 1,840 and 1,830 respectively – a startling 65 per cent slowdown. As a result of this staggering slowdown, the number of units under construction has now passed its peak and is beginning a downwards trajectory. There were 34,300 units under construction in Q1 2016 but this dropped to 33,920 units in Q2, the first quarterly fall for four years. Planning applications have also declined. The number of units sent for planning in Q2 2016 was 48 per cent lower than Q1 and was 54 per cent below the quarterly average from the previous three years. The slowdown is most notable in core areas of central London where just 680 units were applied for planning in Q2 2016,

112 | CANARY WHARF

significantly shy of the 3,710 in Q3 2015. However, even in outer core locations the appetite of developers looks to be softening as 2,150 units were sent for planning in Q2 this year compared with over 5,000 in Q1. Diana Alam, head of residential development sales at JLL, comments: “The slowdown in construction activity and more particularly the outlook for further development in London is of deep concern. We believe there are five key factors behind the slowdown in starts. The first is that the sales market was already beginning to ease during the latter half of 2015, while the second is that construction activity following the global credit crisis had to slow at some point after reaching record levels. The market was then stung by the three per cent additional home stamp duty tax announced in November 2015, which came on the back of the stamp duty reform in 2014. The market was then distracted by the EU referendum. “This combination is having a damaging impact for housing supply right across London, most

notably in central London and comes at the point when construction volumes were reaching levels that may begin to arrest London’s escalating supply crisis.” In the Central London Development sales market, demand and interest has picked up during Q3 but the market remains challenging as launches and transactions have slowed following stamp duty changes and the Brexit vote. Unfortunately too the Brexit vote coincided with the usual summer slowdown but since late-July (predominantly the quietest time of year for sales), the interest in launches has increased with enquiry levels also up on existing live developments. This is positive news for the remainder of 2016 although demand levels are still down year-on-year when investors were more active. The number of sales across central London during H1 2016 was 4,650 units, down 12 per cent on the 5,270 sales in H2 2015. Diana Alam concludes, saying: “It is encouraging that the sales market is improving but the supply situation is of deep concern. With both the economic and political landscapes uncertain, it is unlikely that developers and housebuilders will head to new development sites en masse anytime soon. This should be of great concern to Sadiq Khan and his team and emphasises the need for sensible, workable and long-term supply solutions. This was needed in any case, but these latest statistics hammer home that action is needed.”

With over 30 years’ experience of the London lettings market, Acorn offers a one-stop shop for all its PRS clients, creating a seamless process from the initial consultation and development advice phase, through to finding tenants, site handover, move-ins and eventual block management. The group’s in-house creative and marketing team also lends support with brand development, advertising, brochures and all levels of online and offline promotion. The company represents some of the biggest players in the sector and has established itself as the company to go to when it comes to launching medium- to large-scale PRS blocks. Current clients include: London & Quadrant, Criterion Capital

(Miflats), Realstar Group and Purelake, to name just a few. Paul Deveney, main board director and head of PRS at The Acorn Group, commented: “As a group we have been operating in the Private Rented Sector since 1989, investing heavily in this side of our business, where today we manage a portfolio of over 5,000 units for private and corporate entities. In 2012, we created a dedicated PRS (Build to Rent) Division, as we recognised the potential as well as the investment that was coming in to the sector. My team handles anything from 50-unit sites through to 500 units and works with clients from development stage through to lease up and eventual management of the asset, with particular focus on the ongoing performance of the block, ie tenant retention, void management, rent arrears and income growth. “While we are delighted with the Molior figures, this only shows half of the story, as we also manage a number of Build to Rent schemes outside of London and we also have more than 1,500 units in our pipeline, nearing completion and ready to come to the market.”

The Acorn Group operates across London, the South East and Kent, and incorporates Acorn, Langford Russell, John Payne, Start, Unique and MAP, acorngroup.co.uk

INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO

A taste of the high life This month’s investment opportunities present the ultimate in luxury living, from five-star services on the Strand to exquisite interior design in Hackney and spacious five-bedroom properties in Essex

carpenters wharf

rose lane Looking for idyllic rural living but within an easy commutable distance to London? Look no further, as Enterprise Property Group Limited presents The Rose Lane quartet in Great Chesterford. These homes, which won the prestigious award of Best International Residential Development in the International Property Awards 2015-2016, benefit from a vibrant village location, with amenities including an excellent primary school and two pubs. The development is a ten-minute walk to the station that is on the main line between London, Cambridge and Norwich, putting Liverpool Street just over an hour away. The spacious, detached five-bedroom homes (ranging from 4,880 to 6,255 sq ft) have landscaped gardens, energy-saving features including solar panels and thermal insulation, along with modern features such as bi-fold doors and underfloor heating throughout the ground floors, and balconies. The kitchens are equipped with high-quality appliances including wine coolers, Quooker taps and integrated coffee machines.

Easily the coolest part of London, Hackney Wick has been subject to major redevelopment in the past ten years, allowing the area to emerge as one of the city’s most vibrant and artistic communities. Carpenters Wharf is the locale’s newest addition: a development by Anderson that comprises a distinctive collection of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments designed by Studio Egret West. Located on the northern tip of Fish Island, the apartments have been fitted with the very finest materials, including quartz stone worktops and oak flooring. High specification fixtures include Smeg integrated kitchen appliances, chrome LED lighting and underfloor heating throughout. Residents can also benefit from the use of a communal rooftop garden, offering amazing views towards the canal and Queen Elizabeth Park. Carpenters Wharf is ideally positioned to benefit from a vast range of amenities – from the creative and cultural hub of Hackney Wick, to the sport and leisure facilities at the Olympic Park and the retail and technological epicentre of Stratford. Residents will also be able to benefit from access to Crossrail at Stratford station from 2018. From £415,000 for a one-bedroom apartment

190 Strand Most of us dream of living in a five-star hotel, complete with all of the luxury trappings that such a residence affords. Fortunately, 190 Strand is now offering just such an opportunity to prospective buyers, with a design that has been influenced by the glamour and grandeur of nearby hotels such as The Savoy and Waldorf Astoria, complete with all the modern amenities an urban dweller requires. Comprising 206 new homes, the property offers residents the height of luxury living, with a dedicated concierge on hand to cater to their every whim – from organising theatre tickets to sourcing domestic staff – and a valet parking service for the basement car park. Elevating quality service to the next level, the property even offers residents access to a mobile app, where they can keep on top of their schedules,

book spa treatments, track parcels or pay service charge. The leisure facilities rival those seen in London’s finest hotels, and include swimming and vitality pools, sauna and steam rooms, spa rooms and a relaxation suite all exclusively for residents’ use. Residents at 190 Strand will also have access to a fully equipped business suite, virtual golf and a cinema all on-site. This is luxury living as you’ve never seen it before. The development is well connected, with the Bank of England just ten minutes away and Bond Street under 15 minutes by train. Temple and Charing Cross Undergound stations are within a few minutes’ walk. From £2,440,000

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Whether towering above the city skyline or nestling among the wetlands of a nature reserve, Lauren Ireland at Berkeley Homes has the right property for everyone

Lauren Ireland Berkeley Homes

H

aving been at Savills for 11 years, Lauren Ireland has recently moved over to Berkeley Homes as its regional sales manager for north-east London. “I was approached by other companies,” says Lauren, “and I was intrigued about working on the client side, but to leave a company like Savills, I knew it would have to be to go somewhere really good. Then I was approached by the best. It was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.” We meet in Aldgate, at Goodmans Fields, a Berkeley Homes development Lauren oversees. With beautiful luxury apartments, easy access to the City and the buzz of Shoreditch close by, Lauren is rightly proud. “Both Goodmans Fields and Woodberry Down [another Berkeley site she oversees] achieved 99.5 per cent in the In House Awards for customer satisfaction,” she says. One thing Lauren was particularly attracted to at Berkeley was the company’s focus on improvement and regeneration. “We don’t just buy and sell. Rather, the company is truly a place maker, aiming to enhance local communities and improve existing areas, enhancing the quality of life for residents without disrupting the natural environment.” Take Woodberry Down: the Wetlands have been developed with such a focus on the local ecosystem that Sir David Attenborough has come out in support of the project. Once within the development, there are plenty of extras for those opting for a Berkeley property. Residents enjoy luxury facilities such as a gym, pool and spa, as well as a 24-hour concierge. Berkeley Homes is doing brilliantly. “We’re looking at new sites – though I can’t say where yet.” Lauren is clear that the market is doing well, as people continue to want to invest in quality property with longevity. Lauren’s favourite part of the role? “I get to work across a project right from the beginning at the land feasability stage, through to delivery. Opinions really matter.” The rest of 2016 and beyond certainly looks bright for Lauren and all the rest of the Berkeley team. berkeleygroup.co.uk

DEVELOPMENT SHOWCASE woodberry down, Berkeley Homes, Finsbury Park Berkeley Homes has unveiled the final collection of three-bedroom apartments in the Skyline tower at Woodberry Down. Home to the Woodberry Wetlands Centre, Woodberry Down is also a stone’s throw from the rest of the capital, offering the best of city living and rural tranquility

PROPERTY

A

s one of London’s hidden gems, Woodberry Down is unrivalled when it comes to views, and there is no better vantage point than from the 30-storey Skyline tower, which occupies the heart of Berkeley’s landmark Finsbury Park development. Situated on the banks of the New River, overlooking the two Stoke Newington Reservoirs and the Woodberry Wetlands Centre – which was opened by Sir David Attenborough earlier this year – Skyline is immersed in a picturesque rural setting juxtaposed against London’s iconic cityscape. As a new addition to Woodberry Down this autumn, Skyline will unveil an exclusive collection of three-bedroom apartments, each designed to offer intelligent, flexible living space that facilitates and enhances contemporary lifestyles. Generously proportioned master bedrooms and most second bedrooms benefit from an en suite bathroom, while kitchen and utility areas enjoy luxuries such as coffee machines and wine coolers. Chic interiors, designed by the esteemed Manser Practice, come in two premium styles – Solar and Lunar – for a sleek finish and an aspirational yet comfortable home. Award-winning architect practice, Rolfe Judd, set a new

benchmark in style and architecture with Skyline, designing a residential hub that offers the best of London living for residents. In addition to the private luxury of their own apartment, Skyline’s residents will have direct access to a lounge area, stateof-the-art gym, swimming pool, Jacuzzi and spa facilities, which are located on the building’s ground floor. An onsite, 24-hour concierge is also present for convenience and peace of mind. As the optimum balance of city living and rural tranquillity, Woodberry Down boasts a Zone 2 location in a country setting, offering links into central London on the Piccadilly Line in under 20 minutes. For leisure and cultural opportunities closer to home, the sought-after urban villages of Finsbury Park, Stoke Newington and Islington, with their boutiques, independent coffee shops, pop-up restaurants and farmers’ markets, are a stone’s throw away. Three-bedroom apartments within Skyline at Woodberry Down start at £945,000. For more information and prices please contact the marketing suite on 020 8985 9918 or visit woodberry-down.co.uk
